If you’ve been holding off purchasing the Mercedes ML63 AMG in hopes of a still nowhere to be seen GL63 AMG, new spy photos have emerged clearly showing a Mercedes GL-Class fitted with an AMG package. A revised front bumper, larger AMG wheels and a high performance AMG braking system are all present, along with what are undoubtedly modified sport exhaust and suspension setups. Of course, Mercedes-Benz has continually denied that a Mercedes GL63 AMG is in the works, and this very well may be simply a Mercedes GL with a sport package. But if you’re holding out for the small chance that a GL63 AMG is in the works, it’s at least a glimmer of hope. If it is a GL63 AMG, look for the new AMG twin-turbo V8 with an output of 536 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque to be under the hood.
We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything new regarding the 2012 Mercedes GL63 AMG. Until then, check out some more 2012 GL63 AMG pics in the gallery below, then head over to World Car Fans for the full article.
Amidst the sea of spy photos we brought you yesterday (see here, here and here), we almost forgot to bring you shots of the 2012 Mercedes GL-Class caught testing in its early stages of development. Heavy masking and false paneling disguise virtually all of the 2012 GL’s styling traits, but from a size standpoint, the new SUV appears to remain similar proportions to those of the current GL. Underneath, the 2012 GL will share most of its underpinnings with the new M-Class, while power will be supplied by Mercedes’ new range of direct injection V6 and turbocharged V8 engines.
We’ll continue to keep you posted as new details of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class emerge, but until then, check out the 2012 GL spy photo collection below, then head over to Car Advice for the full article.
With the popularity of crossover vehicles, there has been much speculation of what the future will hold for Mercedes-Benz SUV’s. The latest rumor has Mercedes releasing a baby SUV tagged the GLC or the Geländecoupé – Auto Zeitung published the first details of, what they claim is, the 2014 GLC. Being built to possibly compete with BMW’s X4, the Mercedes-Benz GLC will be around 14 1/2 feet long and will be available with a two wheel drive system as standard and a Four Wheel Drive as an option. Using the same powertrains as the C-Class and E-Class , it is expected the GLC will come equipped with the 1.8-liter four cylinder gasoline engine with 204 hp or the 2.2-liter four cylinder diesel with 170hp. With the development of a new platform for the Mercedes-Benz A and B-Class is underway, it may also be used for the new Mercedes crossover vehicle.
There are currently no major design details available for the 2014 GLC, but it is speculated that it will have large tires, a larger angle of the front bumper, and a coupe style roof line. We will of course keep you posted as more information comes in.
From the front, the eye is immediately drawn to the new bonnet with power domes, and the darkened bi-xenon headlamps with active light function. The rear, meanwhile, also contributes appropriately to the new look: the performance SUV now features darkened tail lamps incorporating a clear-lens design and LED technology. The subtle changes to the exterior coordinate perfectly with the high-gloss, chromed front and rear underguard, and afford the ML 63 AMG an even more powerful and distinctive appearance.
Powerful and torque-laden AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine
Still boasting a power output of 375 kW (510 hp) at 6800/rpm as well as 630 Nm of torque, the ML 63 AMG is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). At the renowned International Engine of the Year Awards in 2009, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine took the top places in both the “Best Performance Engine” and “Above 4 litres” categories.
As before, power transfer is taken care of via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes. The permanent all-wheel drive is decidedly sporty: the power is split asymmetrically 40:60 between the front and rear wheels to provide optimum agility. The AMG sports suspension, based on the AIRMATIC package with air suspension, adaptive damping system ADS and automatic level control all-round, provides dynamic performance combined with the hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort. The generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system, which features internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round, ensures short braking distances and optimum resistance to fading.
The ML 63 AMG comes with 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, which are painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and fitted with 295/40 R 20 tyres on the front and rear. As an optional extra, titanium-grey-painted, high-sheen twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 295/35 R 21 tyres are also available.
High-quality interior with nappa leather upholstery
As usual, the interior of the ML 63 AMG is both functional and high-quality: electrically adjustable AMG sports seats finished in nappa leather upholstery, with Alcantara inserts in the shoulder areas and multicontour function and heating, are complemented by the AMG sports steering wheel with AMG aluminium shift paddles and perforated leather on the specially-shaped grip area. A nappa leather-trimmed dashboard is also available as an optional extra.
The updated ML 63 AMG is available to order with immediate effect and will be delivered to customers from July 2010. It carries a price tag of 105,077 euros (incl. 19% VAT).

Two new models are enhancing the Mercedes-Benz model port-folio in spring 2010. The new-generation R-Class can be ordered now, with an entry-level price of Euro 42,100*. With a total of nine basic versions, this attractive, multi-talented series offers the widest model range in the premium touring saloon segment. The M-Class Grand Edition is entering model year 2011 with a price advantage of up to Euro 2670*. This exclusive variant of the company’s bestselling premium SUV, more than 1 million of which have been sold to date, has a number of attractive, additional features which make this model even more desirable.
The new-generation R-Class has the appearance of being cast from a single mould. The completely redesigned front end with its restyled bonnet, wings, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper gives the entire vehicle a harmonious, dynamic and powerful presence. On request, the front end of the R-Class can be further enhanced by a chrome clasp with integrated daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps. Light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke, 5-twin-spoke or 10-spoke design with sizes from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17 to 21 inches) and the revised rear end with its new bumper cladding, modified tail lights and integrated exhaust tailpipes likewise increase the attractiveness of the model-year 2010 R-Class. In addition to the fresher exterior, it is the inner values of the R‑Class that impress. These include the economy of space of modern MPVs combined with the high quality and prestige of classic Mercedes-Benz saloon cars. At the same time the latest generation offers the interior variability of its predecessor, while scoring with the robustness and all-wheel drive attributes of the Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
Drive system with a high economy and fun factor
In addition to the smooth, powerful and comfort-enhancing petrol engines adopted from the preceding model, optimised diesel units increase the attractiveness of the R-Class. The basic R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model impresses with its harmonious power delivery and consumes only 7.6 l/100 km**. The R 350 CDI 4MATIC combines the performance of a V8 model with the fuel economy of a V6 variant, and is happy with 8.5 litres** of diesel per 100 kilometres. The diesel engine developing 195 kW (265 hp) and a torque of 620 newton metres catapults the most sporty of the diesel R-Class models from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 235 km/h. And the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC is one of the cleanest diesel models worldwide. This model with AdBlue© emissions control consumes 8.4 litres** of diesel per 100 kilo metres, and has emissions at the same, low level as a comparable of a petrol model. As a result, this model already meets the EU-6 exhaust emission standard envisaged for 2014. All the other petrol and diesel versions of the R-Class comply with the EU-5 standard. ** combined NEDC consumption
All R-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This fuel-efficiency transmission has bearings and clutches designed for minimum friction. Modified oil pressures and a new low-friction oil reduce friction and churning losses. The new torque converter operates particularly efficiently, and therefore saves fuel, thanks to its slip-reduced lockup clutch. In addition, the power decoupling function at standstill in D reduces fuel consumption. This technical feature reduces the transmission’s input torque when the car is stationary, for example at traffic lights.
Extensive model range with nine basic versions
With a total of nine basic versions, the R-Class offers the widest model range in the premium touring saloon segment. Thanks to its attractive body design, comprehensive standard features and numerous individualisation options, the R-Class can be tailored to suit individual preferences. The seating variants provide a particularly wide scope: specifically designed for comfortable and safe touring, the saloon has five seats in both the standard and long-wheelbase versions, but configurations with four, six or seven seats are also possible. The R-Class offers a further advantage in the form of a large, flexibly usable luggage compartment: luggage capacity is up to 1950 litres in the versions with the standard wheelbase, and the long-wheelbase version provides 2385 litres. The optional EASY PACK tailgate with switch or key-operated remote control allows easier access to the luggage compartment. All this makes the R-Class the most variable and spacious model in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range.
In the airy, high-quality interior, which gives an even more spacious impression with the optional panoramic glass sunroof, new materials and colour schemes improve value perception and quality even further. Standard features include an upholstery combination of Aspen fabric and breathable, pleasant-feeling ARTICO man-made leather. The interior colour schemes are new, with almond beige available in combination with mocha brown, or alpaca grey with basalt grey. Alternatively the interior can be enhanced even further with a two-tone colour scheme, in which case almond beige and black or alpaca grey and black form an interesting contrast.
Comprehensive standard equipment, attractive pricing
The price range for the R-Class model series starts at Euro 42,100 for the R 300. All the models feature numerous details as standard that make for safe and relaxed driving on both long-distance journeys and on short trips into town. These include the anticipatory occupant proitection system PRE-SAFE®, eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints, a tyre pressure warning system and adaptive brake lights. Safety is also augmented by efficient, user-friendly telematic systems such as Audio 20, Audio 50 APS or COMAND APS. THERMATIC automatic climate control is also standard equipment, as is an AUX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment devices.
In addition to the extensive standard features, the R-Class has numerous assistance systems which ensure ride comfort and safety at the highest level, and underline the leading position of the model series in this market segment. These include DISTRONIC proximity control, AIRMATIC air suspension with the Adaptive Damping System ADS or Blind Sport Assist, which is available for this model series for the first time and can make lane-changes much safer. The LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system makes for easy and convenient operation of the telematics, while a reversing camera allows confident parking and manoeuvring in awkward spaces. The rear seat entertainment system enables passengers in the rear to enjoy their own onboard entertainment programme.

The M-Class Grand Edition
The exterior of the M-Class Grand Edition is distinguishable by numerous attractive features. These include 48.3 cm (19-inch) light-alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design with tyre size 255/50 R19, blue-tinted thermal insulation glass all-round, dark-tinted headlamps and LED technology for the daytime driving lights and sporty, darkened tail lights. Aluminium roof rails and an extensive chrome package with an AMG radiator grille and underguards at the front and rear round off the additional features. Standard equipment also includes PARKTRONIC and a metallic paint finish. On request the Grand Edition can be further enhanced with a paint finish in chromite black or diamond white, and 50.8 cm (20-inch) bicolor light-alloy wheels with 265/45 R20 tyres, options which are only available for this M-Class model. A bonnet with the powerdomes typical of sporty Mercedes-Benz models is standard equipment for the V8 models ML 450 CDI 4MATIC and ML 500 4MATIC, and is available as an optional extra for the other variants.
Sheer class: the interior of the Grand Edition
The feel-good atmosphere that is the hallmark of any Mercedes-Benz impresses in the interior of the sporty yet luxurious Grand Edition interior. The eye is treated to high-grade poplar wood trim and a black roof lining. At night the ambient lighting creates a pleasant and exclusive Grand Edition mood. The hard-wearing, breathable and pleasant-feeling ARTICO man-made leather upholstery with contrasting seams and raised piping is reserved exclusively for this model series, and ensures outstanding seating comfort. The dashboard in a 3D-look is also lined with ARTICO, while the centre door panels are lined with real leather. The sporty nature of this series is accentuated by an AMG sports steering wheel in leather with shift paddles, sports pedals of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs and stainless steel door entry panels. A Grand Edition emblem on the centre console provides the reference to exclusivity. A full leather interior is available on request, likewise with contrasting seams and piping. Comfort head restraints are included as standard.
In 1997 the M-Class was the first premium SUV
The M-Class is seen as the precursor to the modern premium SUVs, and is one of the most popular SUV models worldwide. Since the world premiere of the first model generation in 1997, more than one million examples have left the production lines in Tuscaloosa, USA. Two variants of the M-Class are available to cater to the different requirements of off-road drivers: in addition to the basic 4MATIC version with its electronically controlled off-road driving modes, the “Offroad-Pro Engineering package” can be ordered to make the M-Class capable of mastering even the most difficult terrain. Like all 4MATIC models, the M-Class has a special driving mode which counters critical behaviour when towing a trailer right from the outset, thereby decisively contributing to handling safety.
Grand Edition equipment package with a price advantage of 40 percent
The new Grand Edition equipment package is available for all models in the series with the exception of the ML 63 AMG. At the package price of Euro 3990, there is a price advantage of Euro 2670 compared to ordering the features individually for the variants with a V6 engine. The price advantage is Euro 2015 for the V8 models ML 500 4MATIC and ML 450 CDI 4MATIC.

Yesterday we brought you the first details of Mercedes’ plans for the 2011 R-Class, and today MBUSA has unveiled a collection of additional photos highlighting the model. I won’t go into details of the model again due to the fact my associate as has already covered the topic, but look for the official press release and the full list of model updates any time now. You can see the complete 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class photo collection in the gallery below.
It’s a model that in many ways is the bastard of the Mercedes-Benz model lineup, not because there’s anything wrong with it (in fact, the R-Class is actually quite nice inside), but rather due to Mercedes’ horrid marketing approach when attempting to promote the vehicle. It’s not a minivan, it’s a “sports tourer” may sound familiar. Or maybe you saw the R-Class when it went on tour with the Rolling Stones (probably not). Rather than calling it what is was and marketing it as a model suited perfectly for families, Mercedes instead aimed for the senior citizens and their lavish Social Security checks, and the rest, as they say, is a sales disaster.
But if there’s anything to be said for Mercedes, it’s that they’re not quitters. For better or for worse, sales figures be dammed, when Mercedes wants a model to work, they’re going to make it work. Want proof? Meet the new R-Class. You thought it was on its way out, relegated to the history books and our distant memories, but it’s back, and it’s bigger and stronger than ever (figuratively speaking).
When you look at the updated Mercedes R-Class, you’ll immediately notice one thing: this isn’t your ordinary mid-life revision. Mercedes knew the old R-Class design wasn’t working, so they altered it – significantly. The oval headlamps are gone; the grille that was proportioned way to small is gone; the severely sloping hood is gone. Replacing them, stretched headlamps that in no way reflect an oval shape; a substantially larger grille; and a heightened hood to match. If you kind of squint a little bit, the changes almost make the R-Class look a little like the Audi Q7. In the back, the changes are a little more subdued; however the taillights and bumper have both benefitted from a bit of tweaking.
Inside, a variety of new color combinations are available, including almond beige paired with mocha brown and alpaca paired with basalt. In addition, an AMG sports interior is an optionally available extra, which includes AMG sports seats in nappa leather, an AMG sports steering wheel with shift paddles, sports pedals in brushed stainless steel, a new lighting package and floor mats with AMG lettering. Topping it all off, Blind Spot Assist and NECK-PRO head restraints are now available as optional safety systems.
And last but not least, power in the R350 CDI 4MATIC is reportedly getting a bump in power to 265 hp with reduced consumption and lower CO2 emissions. In real world use, the model’s said to average 27.5 miles per gallon. No other engines are mentioned as of yet, but we’ll of course keep you posted when the official press release and the full list of model changes is unveiled. In the meantime, you can view more photos of the updated Mercedes R-Class in the photo gallery below. And a special thanks to Markus Jordan for the tip.
Mercedes-Benz was among the most successful brands in the readers’ vote for the “Off-roader of the Year 2010” held by the motoring magazine “Off Road”. Within the portfolio the legendary G-Class was even able to notch up a double success: it won first place in the “Luxury off-roader” category, while the special EDITION.PUR model, which entered production in 2009 to mark the 30th anniversary of the G-Class, took second place in the “Classic” category. The M-Class achieved the same ranking in the “Luxury SUV” category. In the “Special-purpose vehicle” category, the multi-talented Unimog once again took its place on the winner’s rostrum.
These awards make the G-Class one of the most popular and highly acclaimed models in the world of off-road vehicles, as a look at the major awards received in recent years reveals. For the seventh time, the readers of “Off Road” have awarded the title of “Off-roader of the Year” to the G-Class, following its successes in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In its 2007 and 2009 readers’ votes, the off-road magazine “4Wheel Fun” declared the “G” to be the “Superstar”. Following its successes in 2003 and 2007, the readers of “Motor Klassik” once again voted the Mercedes-Benz G-Class the “Classic of the Future” last year. And no less than 14 times, readers of the motoring magazine “auto motor und sport” have voted the G-Class the world’s best off-road vehicle. In the special-purpose vehicle segment – off-road vehicles used to carry loads and cargo into remote areas, or used as a basis for special-purpose bodies – the Unimog clearly leads the field, with particular praise for its outstanding off-road capabilities combined with extreme robustness.
A full range: the current G-Class
The current 463-series “G” family has three body variants. The short wheelbase Station Wagon, the long wheelbase Station Wagon or the Cabriolet can be combined either with the economical V6 CDI engine developing 165 kW (224 hp) and 540 newton metres, or a powerful 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine with 285 kW (388 hp) and 530 newton metres. The top-of-the-range G 55 AMG, which is available only as a four-door Station Wagon, is powered by a supercharged V8 engine generating 373 kW (507 hp) and an impressive maximum torque of 700 newton metres. The G-Class continues to offer an outstanding synthesis of powerful drive and dynamic handling systems. In addition to permanent all-wheel drive with an off-road reduction range and the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, standard equipment includes the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and three differential locks that can be engaged at the touch of a button.
The special EDITION.PUR model, which has received an award in the “Classic” category, entered production in 2009 to mark the 30th birthday of the G-Class and is based on the G 280 CDI from the G 461 series. This long wheelbase Station Wagon is homage to the first-generation G-Model, and like its ancestor it is specially optimised for operation in the very toughest off-road conditions.
The trendsetter: Mercedes-Benz M-Class
As a trendsetter among today’s SUVs, the M-Class owes its exceptional status to its characteristically dynamic and elegant design, as well as to a combination of excellent on-road/off-road performance, the ride and operating comfort of a saloon car and a high level of perceived value. Moreover, the M-Class has safety features that are unrivalled anywhere in the SUV segment. These outstanding attributes were duly rewarded by the readers of the motoring magazine “Off Road”.
With a top speed of 322.3 km/h (211 mph) the BRABUS GLK V12 has set a new speed record for street-legal SUVs on the Italian high-speed test track on October 19th, 2009. The exclusive special model, powered by a twelve-cylinder twin turbo engine with 750 hp (740 bhp) / 552 kW, celebrates its world debut at the DUBAI INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW. BRABUS builds this high-performance automobile based on the Mercedes GLK-Class. The BRABUS GLK V12 starts at 397,000 Euros MSRP.
The new BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine was implanted in the small engine bay of the GLK with meticulous precision. The engineers and technicians drew upon their experience and know-how gathered from the development and production of the special model BRABUS BULLIT, based on the latest Mercedes C-Class.
The displacement engine, lubricated exclusively with ARAL Synthetic motor oil, delivers 750 hp (740 bhp) / 552 kW at 5,500 rpm and produces a peak torque of 1,350 Nm (995 lb-ft) at 2,100 rpm, limited in the car electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).
To achieve this kind of performance, the engine – based on the latest Mercedes 600 twelve-cylinder engine – was completely re-engineered in the BRABUS engine department. Displacement is increased from 5.5 to 6.3 liters with the help of a special crankshaft, larger cylinder bore, special pistons and piston rods. In addition the three-valve heads are precision-machined and fitted with special camshafts.
For maximum power yield the BRABUS engineers have developed a special twin turbo system with two larger turbochargers and more efficient intercoolers. Free-flow metal catalysts and a fully stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system custom-tailored to the GLK body let the BRABUS SV12 R 750 Biturbo engine breathe more freely.
Custom-programmed engine electronics ensure an optimal symbiosis of power yield, running smoothness and especially eco-friendly exhaust emissions. Special mapping and OnBoard Diagnostics II result in clean emissions that meet the strict requirements of the Euro IV standard. The BRABUS GLK V12 is also equipped with the latest driving dynamics systems such as ABS, ASR and ESP.
The enormous power is transferred to the rear wheels via a reinforced five-speed automatic transmission and a BRABUS limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent.
Together these measures make the BRABUS GLK V12 the fastest street-legal SUV in the world. But it is not just the incredible top speed of 322.3 km/h (211 mph) that are the basis for its fascination. With an acceleration time from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) of just 4.2 seconds and 12.8 seconds to 200 km/h (124 mph) the five-door sets new standards for its kind.
BRABUS manages this extraordinary SUV performance with custom modifications to aerodynamics, suspension and brakes.
The front apron of the BRABUS WIDESTAR version was developed in the wind tunnel. Its large air dams provide radiators and front brakes with ample cooling air. In combination with a carbon-fiber spoiler lip the front apron also minimizes aerodynamic lift on the front axle – a prerequisite for directional stability beyond 300 km/h (186 mph).
Favorable aerodynamic properties were also a top priority for the design of the BRABUS WIDESTAR fender flares on front and rear axle. They add five centimeters (two inches) to the width of the GLK. Custom-tailored rocker panels create a smooth transition between front and rear flares. The rocker panels feature LED lights in their undersides that are activated via the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle. These lights illuminate the ground next to the SUV for safe entering and exiting the vehicle in the dark.
In the rear the BRABUS roof spoiler reduces aerodynamic lift and thus makes an important contribution to the excellent directional stability of the world’s fastest SUV. The rear appearance of the BRABUS GLK V12 is further characterized by the BRABUS rear apron with its centrally located reflector. Custom-tailored cutouts on the right and left side provide the perfect backdrop for the four characteristically shaped tailpipes of the BRABUS stainless-steel sport exhaust system.
The larger wheel houses of the record car provide space for BRABUS Monoblock wheels up to king-size wheels with a diameter of 22 inches. The size 10Jx22 wheels come in five different designs: GLK V12 customers can choose from the new BRABUS Monoblock G five-spoke forged wheels, three-piece Monoblock VI alloy wheels and one-piece Monoblock E, Q and S wheels. High-performance tires from BRABUS technology partners Pirelli and YOKOHAMA can be mounted up to size 285/25 ZR 22.
The BRABUS coilover sport suspension was developed specifically for the twelve-cylinder SUV. It is height-adjustable on front and rear axle and features ten selectable settings each for bound and rebound.
To handle the extreme performance the brakes were upgraded as well and trimmed for maximum stopping power and endurance. The BRABUS high-performance brakes system features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers and vented and grooved steel discs measuring 380 x 37 millimeters (15 x 1.5 inches) on the front axle. The rear axle stops on six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and vented and grooved 360 x 28 millimeter (14.2 x 1.1 inches) discs.
The interior of the GLK V12 was also refined to reflect the exclusive character of this unique SUV: The GLK V12 comes with a BRABUS fully leather interior that can be further refined with Alcantara elements if desired. The interior appointments are rounded out with an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel, a speedometer with 330-km/h (205-mph) scale and stainless-steel scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS WIDESTAR logo.
Further exclusive interior highlights are wood trim sets or carbon-fiber trim panels for dashboard, doors and center console in any color imaginable. Custom-tailored consoles for the backs of the GLK front seats provide the perfect multimedia experience. They each feature an integrated seven-inch LCD screen and a DVD player.
While one car boasts outstanding driving performance and high fuel efficiency, the other offers high fuel efficiency and good handling. What is the difference between the two? The sporty handling dynamics set the tone in the all-wheel drive GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY: The modern, four-cylinder diesel with 150 kW (204 hp) and an impressive 500 Nm of torque guarantees top acceleration and flexibility. In fact, this model has the most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine in the SUV world. The rear-wheel drive GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with the familiar 125 kW (170 hp) diesel engine, on the other hand, impresses with even better fuel economy (consumption as low as 6.0 l/100 km) while at the same time delivering great performance.
The new models underscore the leading position of the distinctive yet compact GLK. Whereas the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC featuring permanently engaged all-wheel drive, 7G-TRONIC transmission and the segment’s most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine augments the world of top-of-the-range compact SUVs, the GLK 220 CDI with rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission offers maximum fuel economy. It consumes only between 6.0 and 6.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres and combines these low consumption values with good performance. The rear-wheel drive vehicle accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 km/h. The GLK 250 CDI4MATIC completes the sprint to the 100 km/h mark in 7.9 seconds and doesn’t stop accelerating until reaching 213 km/h. This sports car-like performance does not come at the typical cost of higher consumption. The diesel consumes only 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on average.
GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC: The fun yet frugal power SUV
The GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY brings the world’s most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine for an SUV to the Mercedes-Benz range. The new 2143 cc diesel engine with direct fuel injection produces 150 kW/204 hp and 500 Nm of torque in the GLK for outstanding performance. Just as impressive as the sprint times and the top speed is the GLK’s top-gear acceleration. Thanks to its high torque, which is already present at 1600 rpm, the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC accelerates powerfully when overtaking, requiring only 7.0 seconds for the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h. In spite of its great performance, this GLK model is very economical to drive, consuming only 6.7 litres of diesel fuel on average per 100 kilometres (combined NEDC consumption, preliminary value). This makes the GLK significantly more fuel efficient than comparable models in this performance class. The vehicle produces CO2 emissions of 176 grams per kilometre.Furthermore, it not only meets the EU5 emissions standard but also has the potential to fulfil the EU6 limits as well as the BIN 5 requirements in the USA.
Diesel engine with advanced common-rail technology
One of the hallmarks of the new diesel engine in the GLK 250 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY is the increased maximum rail pressure of 2000 bar. This increase in pressure potential is a prerequisite for increasing engine output and torque while at the same time significantly reducing untreated emissions. Newly developed piezo injectors take advantage of the fact that piezoceramics change their crystal structure – and therefore their thickness – in a matter of nanoseconds (one nanosecond = one billionth of a second) when electrical voltage is applied. The new injectors are equipped with a stack of thin piezoceramic layers (called the “piezo stack”) to enable them to achieve a sufficient overall stroke from the very small stroke per layer. The injector needle is actuated directly, so that the fuel injection can be adjusted even more precisely in line with the current load and engine speed situation. Another key factor behind the low emissions, low fuel consumption at full load and peak output is the ignition pressure of 200 bars, which puts the four-cylinder diesel at the head of the field when it comes to diesel engines for passenger vehicles.
A two-stage supercharging system comprising a small high-pressure (HP) turbocharger and a large low-pressure (LP) turbocharger ensures that the optimum charging pressure is always available. The two turbochargers are connected in series, and each has a turbine and a compressor driven by this turbine for the combustion air. The HP turbine is located directly at the exhaust manifold and initially allows exhaust gas to flow through it, causing it to rotate at up to 215,000 revolutions per minute. The HP turbine housing features an integral bypass duct, which can be opened or closed by means of a wastegate triggered by a vacuum unit. If the flap is closed, the entire exhaust stream flows through the HP turbine so that the exhaust gas energy is initially available to drive the HP turbine. This allows the optimal boost pressure to be developed even at low engine speeds. As the engine speed increases, the wastegate opens, distributing the exhaust gas energy to the turbines with optimum efficiency. Downstream of the HP turbine, the two exhaust gas streams reconverge, and the remaining exhaust gas energy drives the LP turbine at a maximum speed of up to 185,000 revolutions per minute. At intermediate engine speeds, the wastegate of the HP turbine is opened so wide that the HP turbine ceases to perform any appreciable work. This allows the full exhaust gas energy to be directed with low losses into the LP turbine, which then does all of the turbine work.
The two compressors are likewise connected in series and are in addition connected to a bypass duct. The combustion air from the air filter first flows through the low-pressure compressor, where it is compressed as a function of the LP turbine’s driving power. The compressed air then flows into the high-pressure compressor, which is coupled to the HP turbine, where it undergoes further compression for a genuine two-stage supercharging process.
The key benefit of this intelligent, on-demand control is the improved cylinder charging and, consequently, high torque even at low engine speeds. What’s more, fuel consumption is reduced. During normal operation, the advantages of this concept can be seen in the harmonious driving characteristics with no turbo lag, a good torque curve across the entire engine speed range, spontaneous throttle response and noticeably improved performance. As a logical supplement to the turbocharger system, Mercedes-Benz installs a larger intercooler that reduces the temperature of the compressed and heated air by as much as 140 degrees Celsius so that a larger volume of air can enter the combustion chambers.
The newly developed exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve) works like a rotary disc valve and precisely controls the quantity of fresh air and recirculated exhaust air to effectively reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.
Sacrifice without detriment: The GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with rear-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission
The powerful, yet economical four-cylinder diesel engine in the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is another unit from this same generation of engines. It produces 125 kw/170 hp and, depending on the equipment level, consumes only between 6.0 and 6.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (combined NEDC consumption, preliminary value). CO2 emissions are from 158 to 168 grams per kilometre. Not only does it meet the current EU5 emissions standard, this version also has the potential to fulfil the EU6 limits as well as the BIN 5 requirements in the USA.
In combination with a tried and tested six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the engine of the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY exudes a lot of power and responds to the driver’s commands with a great deal of agility. It boasts good pulling power and, like the more powerful variant, is extremely smooth running for a four-cylinder diesel engine. In addition to good performance, the engine generates an impressive torque at low engine speeds: Peak torque of 400 Nm is available over a wide rev range from 1400 to 2800 rpm, making it possible to drive very fuel efficiently at low engine speeds in everyday driving situations. The rear-wheel drive vehicle sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 205 km/h.
The GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is also available with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission as an option.
BlueEFFICIENCY: Efficient measures for reducing fuel consumption
Like all BlueEFFICIENCY models from Mercedes-Benz, the two new GLK models also feature an extensive package of measures that help to reduce fuel consumption. Measures besides the diesel engine with direct injection and the low-friction powertrain include weight savings achieved through the use of high strength and ultra high strength steels in the bodyshell and weight-optimised alloy wheels. Aerodynamic side mirrors and underbody panels lower the air resistance, and newly developed 235/60 R 17 V tyres reduce rolling resistance. A regulated fuel pump and the energy-saving electric power steering system further reduce the GLK’s fuel consumption. Thanks to a fuel-consumption computer and a display showing current fuel consumption, GLK drivers can check their fuel consumption at any time and adjust their driving behaviour accordingly.

The only Mercedes-Benz plant in North America celebrated a significant milestone– the production of the plant’s 1 millionth M-Class. The milestone vehicle is a fuel-efficient ML 350 BlueTEC diesel, destined for a West Coast Mercedes-Benz dealership.
“Everyone here at MBUSI is extremely proud to have reached this milestone,” said Ola Kaellenius, who assumed leadership of the plant in June 2009 as the new President and CEO of MBUSI. “This year has posed some challenges, but our Team Members have worked to maintain our momentum and they’ve turned those challenges into opportunities. I’m personally excited by the passion and dedication I’ve seen in our Team Members as they’ve worked to help us achieve our goal of delivering superior products to our customers.”
Initially, the M-Class was the only vehicle produced at the Alabama plant. More than 570,000 vehicles were built during the original M-Class’ eight-year lifecycle — from 1997 to 2004. That success led to a $600-million plant expansion. Today, three vehicles are built at the Tuscaloosa facility – the second-generation M-Class, the R-Class SUV Tourer, and the GL-Class luxury SUV. In total, MBUSI has built more than 1.2 million vehicles and MBUSI is the sole production location for these three products.
In October 2006, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to begin a BlueTEC offensive within the U.S. passenger vehicle segment to coincide with the introduction of ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel. The E320 BlueTEC was a huge success right from the beginning and was voted “2007 World Green Car of the Year”.
Mercedes-Benz is now pushing forward with this initiative with the R, ML and GL 350 BlueTEC – the world’s first three diesel SUVs that not only meet the particularly demanding targets specified in the U.S. BIN5 (50-state) standards, but which also have the potential to fulfill the stringent EU6 standards due in the future, thus also significantly exceeding all current emission standards for diesel passenger cars worldwide. In the U.S., around 20 percent of all customers order their Mercedes-Benz SUVs as a BlueTEC diesel version.
In addition to the innovative clean BlueTEC diesel technology, MBUSI will begin building the new ML 450 HYBRID, which goes on sale Fall of 2009. MBUSI currently has more than 3,000 Team Members who are building the M-, R- and GL-class SUVs for all global markets.
If you’re looking for a way to enhance your Mercedes GL, tuning firm Carlsson today has unveiled the Design RS-Kit for the model, aimed at giving the SUV a sporty, more powerful appearance. The range of interior trim options is augmented by the variant “anthracite-coloured poplar”.
GL 350 CDI 4MATIC with BlueEFFICIENCY technology provides lots of driving pleasure while reducing fuel consumption
In addition to the GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC featuring SCR technology, the GL‑Class is now available with BlueEFFICIENCY technology in the GL 350 CDI 4MATIC. This model consumes around 5 percent less fuel than its predecessor without any change in performance. The vehicle’s V6 engine continues to generate 165 kW/224 hp and already provides its maximum torque of 510 Nm at 1,600 rpm. On average, the diesel engine consumes only 9.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.
Like all other BlueEFFICIENCY models from Mercedes-Benz, the GL also features an extensive package of measures that help reduce fuel consumption. Besides the direct-injection diesel engine, these include the efficient 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission that switches to neutral when the vehicle is waiting at a traffic light or in a traffic jam in order to reduce engine load and fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is further reduced through the use of lower rolling resistance tyres. Aerodynamics have been improved by redesigning the radiator grille and adding more spoilers to the areas surrounding the front wheels. The GL’s fuel consumption is further reduced by the energy-saving electro-hydraulic power steering system. And thanks to a fuel consumption computer and a display showing current fuel consumption, GL drivers can always regulate their fuel consumption and, if necessary, adjust their driving behaviour.
Superlative drive comfort: GL 450 4MATIC, GL 500 4MATIC and GL 450 CDI 4MATIC equipped with V8 engines
Superlative power delivery and maximum drive comfort are among the special attributes of the two V8 petrol models, which also fulfil the EU5 standard. The GL 500’s 5.5-litre V8 engine delivers 285 kW/388 hp and a torque of 530 Nm. Within 6.5 seconds the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h almost as quickly as a sports car, and the top speed of 240 km/h is also comparable. In the GL 450, the V8 petrol engine has a displacement of 4.6 litres, an output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of 460 Nm. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h. The V8 diesel engine in the GL 450 CDI 4MATIC delivers 225 kW/306 hp, and its 700 Nm of torque create ideal conditions for achieving superior drive comfort.

The driver’s task is further simplified by additional electronic handling systems, such as Offroad ABS, Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) and anti-stall assist.
BlueTEC campaign: R, ML and GL-Class now available in Europe with the world’s cleanest diesel technology
The GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC boast impressive performance, high torque, great fuel efficiency and low emissions, which make them some of the world’s cleanest premium SUVs. The latter two models can now also be ordered in Europe , where they will become available this autumn. The vehicles’ environmental friendliness was confirmed by the readers of Bild am Sonntag and a panel of experts who together awarded BlueTEC the “Green Steering Wheel”. The commission already certified last year that this technology has the greatest ecological potential of all of the currently available environmentally friendly automotive innovations.
Although we still have a good amount of time to wait before the next generation Mercedes M-Class is unveiled, spy photos of the 2012 model have begun to surface. As you would expect from a model roughly two years away from its unveiling, the ML is heavily disguised, leaving us to speculate what exactly is in store for the next version of the SUV.
Early rumors indicate a diesel-electric hybrid M-Class is in the works, a strong possibility considering a gas-electric hybrid M-Class should be arriving later this year. Other rumors indicate the model could receive a plug-in variant – one that features an 80hp (60kW) electric motor paired with a twin-turbocharged and direct-injected 3.5L V6 while boasting the ability to travel up to 18 miles on electric power alone.
At this point it’s far too early to state specifics of the 2012 Mercedes ML, but it’s safe to say the number one task Mercedes engineers face in developing the next M-Class is deciding how best to implement alternative drive systems and subsequently better the SUV’s fuel efficiency.
We’ll keep you posted as new details of the 2012 Mercedes M-Class are released
In October 2006, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to commence a BlueTEC initiative in the passenger car segment which was timed to coincide with the introduction of low-sulphur fuel in the United States of America. The E 320 BlueTEC proved a great success from the outset, and was voted “World Green Car of the Year 2007”. As a next step, Mercedes-Benz is now due to offer the R, ML and GL 320 BlueTEC in the USA, the world’s first three diesel cars which not only meet the particularly demanding criteria of the American Bin 5 standard, but also have the potential to fulfil the stringent EU6 standard due in the future – and which therefore considerably better all the current, worldwide exhaust emission standards for diesel passenger cars.
With attributes such as excellent pulling power, economy and a high output, the diesel engine has also proved an attractive alternative to the spark-ignition engine in the USA in times of increasing fuel prices and growing sensitivity to the issue of CO2 emissions. In the land of large minivans, pickups and SUVs, and the given driving conditions characterised by steady cruising speeds on the highways and enormous overland distances, the diesel is able to show its advantages particularly well. At the same time, American legislation sets very strict emission standards for diesel-powered vehicles. This is why Mercedes-Benz introduced the E 320 BlueTEC with its in-house BlueTEC technology in America first, and is now including a variant of this BlueTEC technology with AdBlue injection in its cross-Atlantic range. This innovative drive technology enables these large and powerful SUVs to meet the limits imposed by the US Bin 5 standard.
Impressive power, great fuel economy and extremely low emissions
The muscular V6 diesel engine powering the new BlueTEC models in the GL, M and R-Class shows that a low fuel consumption and very low emissions are also possible for large SUVs. It has an output of 155 kW/211 hp and develops a torque of 540 Nm. Fuel economy is outstanding: the GL 320 BlueTEC, for example, consumes just 9.5 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (25 mpg). This represents an advantage of around 20 to 40 percent versus a comparable petrol model, and easily makes the Mercedes-Benz GL 320 BlueTEC the most economical full-size SUV in the USA.
Key technical data at a glance:
| Cylinders | V6 |
| Valves per cylinder | 4 |
| Displacement cc | 2987 |
| Bore x stroke mm | 83 x 93 |
| Compression ratio | 1:16.5 |
| kW/hp at rpm | 155/210 at 3400 |
| Nm at rpm | 540 at 1600 – 2400 |
Certain features of the six-cylinder diesel engine had to be modified for use in the new models ML 320 BlueTEC, GL 320 BlueTEC and R 320 BlueTEC with AdBlue injection. The piston crowns were revised for an improved mixture formation, and the compression ratio was reduced from 17.7 to 16.5. The VNT turbocharger and engine control unit were also improved and reconfigured. All three of the new SUVs are available only with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission.
Nitrogen oxides drastically reduced with BlueTEC
As a modular concept for an effective reduction in the fuel consumption and emissions of diesel vehicles, the BlueTEC technology developed by Mercedes-Benz puts in place a number of coordinated measures which both minimise untreated emissions using in-engine features and ensure efficient exhaust gas aftertreatment. All relevant emissions components are successively and concertedly reduced to a minimum, in part by using an oxidising catalytic converter and a particulate filter. The most important goal is to achieve a drastic reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, the only exhaust gas constituent which has inherently higher levels in diesel engines than in petrol engines.
Mercedes-Benz has developed two versions to this end. In the E 320 BlueTEC Saloon available in the USA and the E 300 BlueTEC sold in Europe, an oxidising catalytic converter and a particulate filter are combined with a particularly durable NOx storage-type catalytic converter and a special SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) converter. The second BlueTEC version is used for the new GL 320 BlueTEC, ML 320 BlueTEC and R 320 BlueTEC models. In this case AdBlue, an aqueous urea solution is injected into the stream of exhaust gases. This releases ammonia, of which 80 percent is reduced to form harmless nitrogen and water by the downstream SCR converter.
This innovative emissions control technology follows the following stages:
AdBlue injection specially advantageous in large vehicles
Whether a storage-type NOx catalytic converter or AdBlue injection is used depends on the individual vehicle concept and the prevailing market conditions from case to case. AdBlue technology has advantages for large saloons, pickups and SUVs, as the engine does not need to operate with an intermittent, rich combustion mixture to clean the storage-type NOx catalytic converter which removes the harmful nitrogen oxides from the exhaust stream. This would be necessary at frequent intervals in the case of heavy vehicles with relatively high fuel consumption, and would lead to an even higher consumption.
In the case of the urea-SCR process, the reducing agent AdBlue is injected into the exhaust tract. This is an aqueous urea solution which is carried in an auxiliary tank. When injected into the hot, pre-treated exhaust gases, AdBlue is first broken down into its constituents of water and urea. From around 170 degrees Celsius the urea is converted into ammonia (NH3) – the actual active agent in this process. The ammonia is stored in the catalytic converter, and reduces the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen when exhaust gases containing nitrogen oxides flow through the catalytic converter. The engine management system controls the injection of AdBlue in such a way that the ammonia reservoir of the SCR converter always contains some but never too much ammonia. This is monitored by an NOx sensor.
A small AdBlue tank is sufficient
The urea solution is held in a separate onboard tank, and fed to the metering module by means of a pump. As the average consumption of AdBlue is only around 0.1 litres per 100 kilometres (or 1 to 3 percent of diesel consumption), the tank can be of such a size that it only needs to be refilled at the workshop during regular service intervals. The tank capacity is 28 litres in the R 320 BlueTEC and ML 320 BlueTEC, and 32 litres in the GL 320 BlueTEC. Even under more demanding conditions with a higher AdBlue consumption, e.g. when towing a trailer, this is sufficient to avoid the need for unscheduled refilling stops in the workshop. This means that the customer has no need to concern him- or herself with the AdBlue level in the tank. Should the AdBlue level unexpectedly fall below a certain level nonetheless, the electronics provide a timely warning.
More extensive equipment and visual modifications
With these innovative BlueTEC models in the R, M and GL-Class, Mercedes-Benz is not only demonstrating the potential of the diesel as a drive system, but also offers tailor-made solutions for the high expectations of the premium segment with the widest range of SUVs. The R-Class particularly excels with its outstanding long-distance comfort, and with the most generous and variable interior with up to seven seats. The M-Class is the most successful Mercedes-Benz Sport Utility Vehicle, and is seen as the trailblazer for all modern premium SUVs. And with the GL-Class, Mercedes-Benz occupies the peak position in the entire SUV world – its occupants enjoy first-class on-road and off-road travel under all conditions.
All three SUVs have now been revised in numerous respects.
The modifications to the M-Class are the most comprehensive of all. The new generation of this dynamic SUV now has even more striking characteristics, and appears even more sporty and powerful. The front and rear ends have been redesigned and given a stylistically updated and youthful touch. The front end of this off-roader is now defined by a redesigned bumper, re-contoured headlamps and a larger, even more dominant radiator. The rear aspect also has a redesigned bumper with inset reflective strips to emphasise the vehicle width, as well as tail lights with smoked-glass lenses. Stylistic fine-tuning and new materials which are pleasing to the eye and touch combine with a new two-tone colour scheme to add fresh highlights to the interior. One eye-catching feature is the new four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, which the GL and R-Class will also receive.
The standard appointments for the M, R and GL-Class have also been significantly expanded. They now include the unique, preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® and NECK-PRO head restraints, as well as a new, Mercedes-Benz developed telematic system with further improved user friendliness, high performance and numerous additional functions.

More performance, more comfort – new-generation telematics
A completely newly developed generation of telematic systems developed by Mercedes-Benz will be used in SUVs in future. These excel with even greater user friendliness, a high performance and numerous new functions. Integrated features include a hand-free system based on Bluetooth technology, and an Aux-In connection for mobile audio units such as an iPod. On request there is also a new Media Interface, which can connect an external music source with the onboard electronics and control system of the off-roader, enabling music tracks to be shown in the instrument cluster and the colour display in the centre console, and conveniently accessed using the keys on the multifunction steering wheel. At the same time the battery of the audio unit is charged.
There is a choice of three units, all of them with a colour display, a twin tuner for improved radio reception, speed-sensitive volume control, a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies and a Bluetooth interface which enables a mobile phone to be wirelessly linked to the hands-free system. In the USA there is also the option of an HD radio and SIRIUS satellite radio. In conjunction with the new telematics generation, Mercedes-Benz also offers the optimised LINGUATRONIC voice control system as an option.
The occupants are also able to enjoy a surround-sound experience of concert hall quality with the latest generation of the optional harman kardon® Logic7® sound system. With its high output and digital signal processor (DSP), this ensures outstandingly transparent listening pleasure.
As a further option, passengers in the rear can be provided with a rear-seat entertainment system featuring two large, 8-inch screens, a DVD-player, two wireless headsets for more freedom of movement and a remote control unit.
Unrivalled safety features as standard
In the SUV segment too, Mercedes-Benz vehicles have always been exemplary when it comes to safety. In future the R, M and GL-Class will be supplied with the preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® and NECK-PRO head restraints as standard equipment.
Mercedes-Benz is the trendsetter for diesel cars
As long as 70 years ago, Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to use the combustion principle pioneered by Rudolf Diesel in a passenger car engine. This technology has a much higher efficiency than the spark-ignition engine, and has been steadily improved over many years. One decisive technological leap forward led to the development of the modern diesel in 1997: the introduction of common-rail direct injection in combination with four-valve technology. Since then the abbreviation CDI has stood for both unrivalled fuel economy and an enormous increase in torque – a synonym for a level of pulling power which guarantees plenty of driving pleasure and often makes diesels superior to petrol models developing the same output.
If the diesel has previously had any disadvantages versus the petrol engine, this has been in the area of its specific emissions – above all soot particles and nitrogen oxides. Ever since the introduction of the maintenance-free particulate filter in autumn 2003, Mercedes-Benz has however also set the best example where particulates are concerned. And despite having achieved a reduction in nitrogen oxides by around 75 percent thanks to in-engine measures over the last 15 years, Mercedes-Benz has not been content to rest on its laurels in this respect. Equipped with innovative BlueTEC technology, which was introduced for the first time in a passenger car in the USA, the high-tech diesel engines from Mercedes-Benz meet the world’s toughest exhaust emission limits. While AdBlue injection makes the new M 320 BlueTEC, R 320 BlueTEC and GL 320 BlueTEC the world’s cleanest diesel SUVs.

Spring 2009 sees the GLK receive not only a number of new items of equipment but also a special distinction: compact and distinctive, it is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV model family to receive the sought-after Environmental Certificate in accordance with ISO standard 14062. In awarding the certificate, the independent specialists at the TÜV test organisation have once again recognised the company’s commitment to environmental protection, as also laid down in the policy guidelines for the entire Daimler Group. These require the premium manufacturer to go much further than merely considering the environmental effects which a vehicle has while it is actually in use. Instead, the entire lifecycle from development through the production process and the use phase right up to disposal is examined and optimised. The Environmental Certificate is based on a complete life cycle assessment of the GLK which comprises some 40,000 separate processes. In addition to the GLK, the A, B, C and S-Class models have already been awarded the TÜV Süd Environmental Certificate.
The certification to ISO standard 14062 applies to all GLK models. The Mercedes-Benz GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was used as the basis for calculating a range of parameters including the energy requirement and emissions over a distance of 200,000 kilometres. The results for the compact SUV were extremely positive: it consumed just 6.7 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres (176 g CO2/km) and performed to a higher standard than that required by the EU 5 emission limits which come into force in September 2009. Factors optimised through the BlueEFFICIENCY strategy include aerodynamics, rolling resistance, vehicle weight and energy management. What’s more, all GLK models are also compatible with future fuels. They are already designed to meet the requirements of EU plans to increase the biofuel content. A bioethanol component of 10 percent (E10) is permissible for petrol engines while diesel engines are able to run without any reservation on fuel with a 10-percent biofuel component, comprising 7 percent biodiesel (B7 FAME) and 3 percent hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Design for Environment: environmental protection starts on the drawing board
The “Design for Environment” (DfE) concept was integrated in the complex development process for the GLKright from the start. Special DfE teams made up of engineers from a wide range of disciplines – such as life cycle assessment, dismantling and recycling planning, materials and process engineering, as well as design and production – ensured compliance with the defined environmental objectives. The integration of DfE in the product development process ensured that environmental aspects were considered from the very earliest stage of development. As Dr Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer of Daimler AG, points out: “The environmental quality of a vehicle is determined by more than its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It’s necessary to look at the entire life cycle from development through production and use to disposal. This is a striking example of Mercedes-Benz’s comprehensive commitment to the environment. The Environmental Certificate for the GLK confirms the success of our strategy in this important area.
Public access to the Environmental Certificate and a detailed presentation of it is available in the “Life Cycle” documentation series at www.mercedes-benz.com
Comprehensive environmental concept making consistent use of secondary and renewable raw materials
The GLK already meets the requirement for a 95-percent recoverability rate which is applicable from 01.01.2015. Even at the development stage, care was taken to ensure that certain thermoplastic components – such as bumpers, wheel arch linings, side member, underbody and engine compartment panels – could be segregated and disassembled easily. In the GLK, 30 components with a total weight of 41 kilograms contain a proportion of high-grade recycled plastics. These include wheel arch linings, cable ducts and underbody panelling. As far as possible, the secondary raw materials used are obtained from vehicle-related waste flows, one example being the front wheel arch linings which are made from recycled vehicle components.
A total of 27 components with a combined weight of 20.7 kilograms are made with renewable raw materials. These components are to be found principally in the interior of the GLK. The seat upholstery contains some 15 percent pure sheep’s wool. Olive coke is used in the activated charcoal filters which prevent hydrocarbon emissions resulting from fuel evaporation and are self-regenerating during vehicle operation.
New equipment features and model designations for the GLK
A number of new items of equipment are available for the distinctive, compact SUV. These include comfort and convenience features such as KEYLESS GO or – in combination with the COMAND APS multimedia system – a reversing camera with a display showing static guide lines to assist with manoeuvring. Inside the GLK, customers can now choose particularly hard-wearing yet also breathable ARTICO man-made leather. What’s more, the luxurious designo line is also available with two-tone leather appointments in a choice of black/light brown and black/corteccia.
Spring 2009 sees the GLK model designations change in accordance with the other Mercedes-Benz model lines. The two versions with a V6 petrol engine now have the model designations “GLK 300 4MATIC (formerly GLK 280 4MATIC) and GLK 350 4MATIC (unchanged) and, like the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC with BlueEFFICIENCY technology, meet the requirements of the EU 5 standard which comes into force in September 2009. The second diesel version, the GLK 350 CDI 4MATIC (formerly GLK 320 CDI 4MATIC), complies with the EU 4 standard.

* All models feature 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, ** depends on equipment
Mercedes-Benz today has unveiled an updated version of the largest member of its SUV family – the GL-Class – while at the same time introducing a range of new BlueTEC SUV models. On the new GL, key exterior changes include modernized bumpers, redesigned chrome underbody protection at the front and the rear, a new radiator grille and fog lights/daytime driving lamps connected by a chrome bar, new light-alloy wheels measuring between 18 – 21 inches and reworked chrome tailpipes. Also available are two exterior paint colors: “Tenorite Gray” and “Palladium Silver.”
Inside, enhancements to the seven-passenger SUV include redesigned leather/ARTICO seats with contrasting trimming (there’s also an optional nappa leather interior for the GL500), a new range of instruments, a multifunction nappa leather steering wheel and crash-responsive NECK PRO comfort headrests for the driver and the front-seat passenger. Also available is optional two-tone leather appointments in black/cashmere beige or black/alpaca gray and the indirect ambient lighting employed in the S-Class, while augmenting the range of interior trim is a new variant, entitled “anthracite-colored poplar.”
And lastly, the final key change to the Mercedes GL-Class worth noting is the availability of GL 350 CDI 4MATIC and GL 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY variants. On the latter, fuel consumption is improved roughly 5 percent when compared to its predecessor thanks to better aerodynamics, low resistance rolling tires and a more intelligent 7G-TRONIC transmission. As a result, the model consumes an average of 9.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (about 25 mpg), while power and torque come in at 165 kW/224 hp and 510 Nm @ 1,600 rpm, respectively.
It’s important to note, however, that as of now, this information applies only to the European market. There’s no word yet on the availability of the aforementioned models in the U.S., so check with your local dealer for more info.
In the search for the optimum hybrid system for the premium motor car, the engineers were already sure of one thing right from the concept phase: a Mercedes-Benz SUV with a hybrid drive would have to share the same typical brand attributes as any other Mercedes vehicle. Essential elements such as the greatest possible active and passive safety, optimum ride comfort and ease of operation, uncompromising reliability over a long period and high-quality workmanship with select materials would have to be on a par with a comparable, conventionally powered standard-production vehicle. And all combined with the greatest possible efficiency.
At the same time, the drive system should be testimony to the company’s innovative strength and cutting-edge technology. These objectives demanded a complete development cycle – the kind of process any new model family developed from scratch would undergo. Until the Mercedes-Benz ML 450 HYBRID reached series-production maturity, the engineers and technicians clocked up a total of four million kilometres, taking in some of the world’s most extreme climatic conditions to prove the system’s reliability, be it in the sub-zero Arctic circle, the searing heat of arid desert regions or in the sweltering, humid temperatures of the tropics. The work was supplemented by an extensive test-rig programme and detailed simulations as part of the “Digital Prototype”. An important aim during development was to optimally match the various subsystems within the powertrain. System matching enables the various drive modes to be easily used while the customer is driving.
The two-mode hybrid technology in the ML 450 HYBRID, whose drive architecture supports purely electric operation and purely combustion engine operation or any combination of the two, takes its lead from the fundamental work undertaken by the “Global Hybrid Cooperation”. This group brought together research and development work undertaken by the companies Daimler AG, BMW Group, General Motors and Chrysler.
Superior technology: two-mode hybrid for the most efficient drive system
Thanks to two-mode hybrid technology the ML 450 HYBRID boasts tangible benefits: its performance figures are on a par with a conventional eight-cylinder SUV with permanent all-wheel drive while fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced by up to 60%. The vehicle designed specifically for the US market delivers ‘city’ fuel consumption of 21 mpg and ‘highway’ consumption of 24 mpg, making it the most efficient vehicle in its segment. With its SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) classification, the SUV meets the most stringent emissions standard for vehicles with a combustion engine currently applicable in the US. At the same time, the ML 450 HYBRID with a system output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a combined torque of 517 newton metres guarantees a superlative driving experience combined with an enhanced level of ride comfort. The driver can concentrate fully on the traffic and enjoy the ML 450 HYBRID driving experience without having to select additional functions as the drive management system is fully automatic. The functionality of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system is also fully retained.
At the heart of the two-mode hybrid drive is the transmission unit with two compact electric motors, three planetary gear sets and four clutches. This configuration enables the power to be split into an electrical and a mechanical path. Conventional one-mode hybrid systems tend not to have mechanical ratios. As such, this kind of system transfers the bulk of the power via the electrical path with high electrical output and hence lower efficiency. It works efficiently principally at lower loads and speeds. If power also needs to be transferred at higher loads and speeds, an accordingly larger electric motor would be required. Having to power and find space for this engine would only be possible at the expense of efficiency. In response to increasing engine loads and higher speeds, two-mode technology, by contrast, variably shifts the power transfer from the electrical path to the mechanical drive path. As a result, the system is much more efficient in all situations, both in inner-city stop-and-go traffic as well as on fast motorway journeys, while also enabling smaller electric motors to be used. The efficiency boost – both in urban traffic as well as on motorway journeys – is therefore where “two-mode” technology gets its name from.
The four clutches are used to distribute the driving force generated by the electric motor and combustion engine via four fixed ratios and two electric variable ratios to all four wheels on the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system, depending on the driving situation. Various strategies ensure the best possible fuel consumption and performance, depending on the traffic situation or the driver’s requirements:
The two compact electric motors boast a high power density and are fully integrated into the transmission housing. The limited installation space means the two electric motors have to be configured differently. The first electric motor – positioned nearer to the combustion engine – develops 62 kW (85 hp) and 235 newton metres of torque and has been designed with power output and minimal losses firmly in mind. The electric motor placed at the end of the transmission develops 60 kW (82 hp) and 260 newton metres and is thus the ideal solution for moving off solely under electric power and providing the booster function.
Compact 288-volt battery with high power density
A battery management function monitors and controls the various charge flows during electric motoring, boost or recuperation to ensure a stable charge state. The entire high-voltage onboard network complies with the most stringent safety standards.
Sophisticated management system computes the most fuel-efficient operating mode in real time
Operation of the two external rotor magneto motors and the management of the entire high-voltage onboard network requires complex control electronics housed in the engine compartment of the ML 450 HYBRID. Waste heat from the electronics is dissipated via a separate cooling circuit to increase efficiency. An integrated Auxiliary Power Module enables power to be exchanged between the 288-volt battery and the 12-volt onboard network.
A powerful computer controls the hybrid system with up to 50 million computing operations a second. The electronic control unit calculates the most efficient operating mode 160 times a second, thus ensuring the lowest possible fuel consumption. The management system also supports new functions and comfort/convenience features:
* exclusive features of the ML 450 HYBRID
Consumption-optimised Atkinson V6 engine
The modified 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine has been optimised in accordance with the Atkinson process, delivering substantially better fuel consumption and emissions figures with an output of 205 kW (279 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 newton metres. The development engineers utilised some of the benefits of the Atkinson principle whereby the expansion phase is longer than the compression phase. The intake valve is kept open slightly longer between the intake and compression phases, which improves the engine’s thermal efficiency while reducing the specific fuel consumption and untreated emissions. This process is not used with conventionally powered vehicles because Atkinson engines – apart from the lower fuel consumption and emissions – tend to deliver lower torque at lower revs and thus inferior response particularly at low engine speeds. On the ML 450 HYBRID this drawback is more than offset through the use of the electric motors when moving off normally, accelerating or using the booster function. The M-Class thus offers superb responsiveness and agility.
Compared with the conventional 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, the Atkinson version features a modified cylinder head, pistons and camshaft. The camshaft timing has also been modified. The newly developed regulated oil pump adjusts the flow rate to the engine’s actual requirements, thus minimising the necessary delivery rate and helping reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Since the alternator and starter functions are integrated in the two electric motors, these two components, which are now surplus to requirements, no longer need to be connected up to the belt drive on the combustion engine. The air conditioning compressor and the steering servo pump are another two components that do not need to be powered via the belt drive. These are driven electrically on the ML 450 HYBRID and can be run independently of the combustion engine.
Operating strategies of the two-mode hybrid drive
The ML 450 HYBRID offers the full range of extra functions offered by a hybrid drive. These include variable hybrid mode for city and motorway driving, silent, purely electric moving off and motoring, the “booster function” for fast acceleration, recuperation and the start/stop function. These functions are activated depending on the operating state and traffic situation:
Info display indicates current operating state
The ML 450 HYBRID driving experience offers an impressive mix of high agility and balanced ride comfort under all operating conditions. A specially designed display concept enables the driver to keep track of the particular drive mode. The COMAND system display can be used to either display the current energy flow between the high-voltage battery, combustion engine and electric motors including the percentage charge state of the battery, or a fuel consumption and recuperation energy graphic. The battery charge state can also be called up in the instrument cluster. The conventional rev counter is replaced by a display which illustrates the combined drive system and recuperation output at a given moment.
The choice is yours: Economy or Sport mode
To ensure you can experience the extraordinary agility of the ML 450 HYBRID even more emphatically, apart from Economy mode, the model comes with a Sport mode, which is activated using the “E/S” button in the centre console. This operating mode provides the handling of a conventional automatic transmission with eight fixed ratios and very short shift times. The response is even more spontaneous thanks to the decidedly sporty engine and transmission control unit and the direct through-drive in the powertrain. Sport mode also recognises the driving characteristics of the driver or the particular road profile and adapts the system management function accordingly.
Classic benefits of the M-Class remain unchanged
The Mercedes-Benz M-Class models rank among the most successful premium SUVs and offer the greatest possible active and passive safety, optimum ride comfort and ease of operation, uncompromising reliability over a long period and high-quality workmanship with select materials. These attributes naturally also apply to the ML 450 HYBRID, which in these respects offers performance on a par with the conventionally powered variants. The hybrid version meets the same crash requirements and offers outstanding active safety thanks to the dynamic handling control systems ESP®, ABS or BAS and the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system. The hybrid technology has been integrated perfectly, without taking up any additional installation space which would compromise comfort or practicality. The space in the passenger compartment is unchanged; the boot capacity is as large as ever. The only external clues on the ML 450 HYBRID are the redesigned bonnet, the BlueEFFICIENCY label on the wings and the HYBRID lettering on the rear.
The ML 450 HYBRID is produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the United States.

“Few Mercedes-Benz owners in the U.S. ever take their vehicles off-road, a reality the German automaker not only realizes but embraces. Thus, the GLK is targeted at affluent women — and it appears Mercedes has hit its mark. This baby Benz has clearly been refined for the on-road market.
Consider the evidence: The off-road package that Mercedes-Benz claims will allow the GLK to rival the Land Rover LR2 in off-road capability will not be available in the U.S. Neither will the two Euro-market diesel engines, despite their efficiency advantages. As if to drive the point home, our tester arrived wearing 20-inch wheels wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. While the sidewalls may have revealed a mud and snow rating, the tread hardly looked trail-ready. Clearly, the GLK350 is not meant to tackle much more than the occasional snowy drive to a condo in the mountains.
We’re okay with that, because while the GLK might not keep up with a Jeep Wrangler on the soft stuff, it will be far more pleasant to live with during the work week. Heated leather seats, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and a superb stereo will make the office commute and jaunts to the mall and supermarket more than bearable. The fully adjustable seats keep your backside happy on long drives, and the COMAND infotainment system is easy to learn and provides quick access to stereo, phone, and navigation. While the COMAND control knob operates much like BMW’s iDrive, the system is more user-friendly. Unfortunately, Mercedes has placed the knob at an odd angle behind the gear select lever, requiring an uncomfortable reach. Moving it just an inch farther forward, away from the edge of the armrest, would help immensely.
While the satellite radio and iPod interface will keep you entertained in traffic, the superb drivetrain will put a smile on your face when you finally get out of town. In the hills above Malibu, the 268-horsepower V-6, seven-speed automatic transmission, and 4Matic all-wheel drive system make the GLK350 a surprisingly sporty ride. While the steering is, in typical SUV fashion, rather slow (2.75 turns lock-to-lock,), it’s accurate. The big Pirelli meats offer impressive grip, and even when they began to let go, stability and traction control quickly reeled in the errant wheels. At the track, all that grip, plus surprisingly flat cornering, translated to an impressive 0.80 g of lateral acceleration and an equally impressive 28.1-second lap time around the Motor Trend Figure Eight.
The transmission rocks. While the GLK’s seven-speed auto allows for manual shifting by rocking the shift lever left to right, driver input really isn’t necessary. Switch the vehicle from Comfort Mode to Sport mode and the seven-speed will hold gears longer, allowing quick bursts between turns without ever changing cogs.
On the track, the 3.5-liter V-6 hustled the Benz to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. Stops were equally impressive: 60 to 0 mph in just 124 feet. Brake-pedal feel left much to be desired, though. The first half of travel is mushy and provides little stopping power. Then, forces suddenly firm up considerably and the brakes bite hard. The GLK needs a more gradual, linear braking response.
To their credit, the brakes have a tough job. Despite its smallish size, the GLK tips the scales at 4214 pounds. Still, the GLK never feels like a porker. Merging and passing on the freeway are effortless, and the GLK can pull off a 15.0-second quarter-mile at 92.9 mph. The real penalty is fuel economy: The GLK carries an estimated EPA city/highway rating of just 16/22 mpg. And it only drinks premium.”

“Associations with Mercedes-Benz and sticker prices typically involve an adjective equivalent to the word “high.” So it’s a bit of a surprise to find out that the 2010 GLK350 4MATIC starts at a not unreasonable $36,775, which is $3450 less than a 2009 BMW X3 sport-ute. A two-wheel-drive GLK, coming in April, will shed another $2000 off the window sticker. The competitive pricing—an Acura RDX SUV starts $2320 below the 4MATIC—is meant to lure “conquest buyers.” Mercedes-Benz predicts that 70 percent of GLK customers will be new to the German luxury brand.
The cost-wary might want to avoid some of the $6670 worth of extravagant options on our test car. Highlights include the $3350 Multimedia package (which includes navigation) and a $970 appearance package with 20-inch wheels and tires and chromed roof rails. Running boards add another $660 and are positioned to soil clean pants upon exiting the vehicle.
Mercedes has hit the mark perfectly with the GLK. The 3.5-liter V-6 puts out 268 horsepower, eight more than the X3. The 4219-pound curb weight is on the heavy side of the class average, but the seven-speed automatic allows for shorter ratios in the lower gears, resulting in a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.5 seconds. That’s dead even with the RDX, which was quickest in our most recent small-luxury-SUV comparo.
Despite 0.82 g of grip, the GLK doesn’t offer the carlike handling of the RDX or the X3. A soft ride is backed up by one-finger-light steering, and uneven pavement results in pronounced head toss. Though refined, the GLK drives more like its G-wagen looks than its C-class underpinnings.
Cargo space—23 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 55 cubes with the seats folded–isn’t as much as you’d get in the RDX or the X3. The rear seat has plenty of kneeroom, which is an improvement over the C-class. Mercedes doesn’t sell the wagon version of the C-class stateside, but the GLK fills that role perfectly, as long as you’re not looking for driving thrills.”

“If I were ever going to own an SUV, it would be something like the all-new Mercedes Benz GLK350. It’s got a lengthy list of standards at a base level. It drives incredibly well. It’s small enough for comfortable city driving, yet large enough to have usable cargo space. And it’s attractive. Not to mention the Mercedes cachet. Oh, and the base price? It rings in at $34,775.
The five-passenger GLK-Class launches as a 2010 model, but the 4MATIC model is available now, and the base rear-wheel drive GLK350 appears at dealers in April. The GLK is slotted as the new compact entry-level SUV for Mercedes, with a price point to match. Upgrading to the M-Class increases the MSRP by $13K, and the GL-Class adds $24K over the GLK.
Without spending any extra money on options, a buyer is looking at standard features such as 19-inch aluminum wheels with all-season tires, dual chrome exhaust tips, roof rails, Bluetooth, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control adaptive brakes, six airbags and Agility Control suspension.
What isn’t included are some fairly basic features I’d expect at a luxury level. However, this à la cart menu is typical of a Mercedes. Here’s a heads up for you on some of those items you’ll have to pay extra for: an iPod integration kit ($375), park assist ($790), heated front seats ($740) and any color of exterior paint other than red, white or black ($720). The test vehicle was the 4MATIC version, which was greatly appreciated in this hideous weather we’ve been having. Base price with the all-wheel drive is $36,775, and believe me, for an extra $2K over the base model, it’s so worth it.
Powering the GLK is a 3.5-liter V-6, and this engine is superb. It delivers 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Mated to the seven-speed transmission, the power is smooth seamless and fast. Fast to the tune of 6.5 seconds for a 0-to-60-mph time. Not bad for a 4,036-pound vehicle.
Whether I was navigating through the mounds of snow in my alley or zipping down the highway, the GLK was perfectly acclimated to both situations. From the engine power to the actual ride-and-handling, I have zero complaints with how the test vehicle drove. It did exactly what I needed in every situation, and I couldn’t have been more pleased.
I was also pleased with the looks of Mercedes’ newest SUV. The GLK has strong straight lines and the bold Mercedes grille. It’s more than just a sawed-off version of the ML-Class and GL-Class SUVs. It has a more angular profile, and, in my opinion, it’s more attractive. The long nose combined with the chiseled hood lines and fender flares are distinct and modern.”
