Outstanding performance, impressive driving characteristics and the expressive, stylishly honed design are the hallmarks of the new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 and Mercedes-AMG SL 65. The technical highlights include the sports suspension based on Active Body Control, the rear-axle differential lock which now features as standard, the even more responsive AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission (SL 63) and the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes.

“Our updated SL 63 and SL 65 high-performance roadsters offer a unique driving experience, combining hallmark AMG “Driving Performance” with the pleasures of open-air motoring and superior comfort on long journeys, notes Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The SL 63 and SL 65 will have their world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 18 November 2015; the market launch will begin in April 2016.

Both roadsters offer more power and torque than their respective competitors in this segment. These engines result in high-calibre performance, as illustrated by figures for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 and 4.0 seconds respectively, for example. The top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). The AMG Driver’s package includes an increase in the top speed to 300 km/h (electronically limited). NEDC combined fuel consumption stands at 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres for the eight-cylinder engine and 11.9 l/100 km for the twelve-cylinder variant.

The powerhouses incorporate numerous high-tech components for high power output combined with low fuel consumption: in addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection, further features include an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbocharging, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment and an air/water intercooler. The weight-optimised exhaust system provides for a striking engine sound with an individual character. Large radiators in the front and special vents in the bonnet ensure the required heat balance for the engines.

Performance is also boosted by the sports suspension based on Active Body Control, the high-performance composite brake system and the redeveloped AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission (SL 63) or AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC (SL 65).

The intelligent lightweight design is also a major contributory factor to the high driving dynamics. On the SL models the light all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for high rigidity, safety and comfort combined with the lowest possible weight. The designers have used the even lighter material magnesium for the panel behind the tank. The boot lid contributes to a further reduction in weight. The interior support consists of a light carbon-fibre composite material. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component benefits from AMG’s motorsport expertise and is bonded to the equally very light plastic outer shell. This results in weight savings of five kilograms in comparison to a conventional boot lid.

Sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The steering knuckles and spring links of the 4-link front axle and almost all the wheel control parts of the multi-link rear suspension are also produced in weight-optimised aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses benefits not only agility, but also the response of the spring-damper elements.

Mercedes-AMG remains faithful to the Active Body Control (ABC) active spring and damper system. For even greater agility and high cornering speeds, the AMG SL models have more negative camber all round and fully revised, substantially stiffer elastokinematics. At the touch of a button, the optional Performance suspension (available for SL 63 only) offers an emphatically sporty characteristic with reduced roll angles and taut body damping at the touch of a button (“Sport”) or a more comfort-oriented set-up for a high level of comfort on longer journeys (“Comfort”).

In conjunction with the new electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering, the AMG roadsters offer agile cornering and clear feedback to the driver when the car is approaching its critical limits. The steering features a constant and more direct ratio and variable power assistance which adapts according to the selected suspension set-up. The standard scope of equipment also includes 3-stage ESP® with “SPORT Handling” mode for particularly ambitious drivers.

Even more responsive: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission on the SL 63 boasts tailor-made dynamics and high variability. Whether automatic or initiated by the driver using the steering wheel shift paddles, upshifts and downshifts are executed noticeably faster than on the previous model. Especially in “Sport Plus” and in manual mode, the transmission response is now even more prompt. This enhanced spontaneity was made possible by optimising the engine and transmission software. Furthermore, the new aluminium shift paddles are now able to transmit the driver’s commands to change gears even faster. The tangible driving dynamics are thus enhanced further.

Optimum traction: rear-axle differential lock as standard

For improved traction and driving dynamics, SL 63 and SL 65 are equipped with a mechanical rear-axle differential lock as standard. This reduces the slip on the inside wheel when cornering, without any control intervention in the braking system. This allows the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. The car remains more stable when braking from high speeds, and the limited-slip differential also improves traction when accelerating fast from a standing start.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes

The five different driving programmes “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus”, “Individual” and “RACE” provide the driver with broad scope for influencing the characteristics of the SL 63 and SL 65. Numerous parameters can be modified, from throttle response to engine sound, enabling the utmost in individualisation. In the “Comfort” programme the driver experiences a gentle transmission characteristic with comfortable and early gear changes. In “C” mode the car always starts in second gear. In the other driving modes the engine and transmission demonstrate substantially greater agility, in addition to which gear changes are faster. On the SL 63, an automatic double-declutching function when downshifting and the RACE START function also form part of the standard scope of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Expressive and distinctive: the exterior design

The striking design emphasizes the two high-performance roadsters’ self-assured character. The front section is totally new and markedly more expressive. It is characterised by the newly designed twin-blade radiator grille, which is now wider at the bottom. The A-wing front apron, the large cooling air intakes with flics as an additional means of guiding air flows and the front splitter emphasize the vehicle’s width. The newly designed bonnet combines design and function in the guise of classic powerdomes and the vents which are required for technical reasons.

The apron in a new diffusor look immediately catches the eye at the rear. All-red tail lights underscore the stylish character. The side skirts also feature a new design and incorporate different inserts according to the model concerned – in silver chrome on the SL 63, while the SL 65 is set apart by applications in high-gloss chrome. The Night package is optionally available for the first time. The Carbon-Fibre package has been extended to include inserts in the rear apron and in the side skirts.

The SL 63 leaves the factory with 10-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, in size 9 J x 19 with 255/35 R 19 tyres at the front and in size 10 J x 19 with 285/30 R 19 tyres at the rear. The SL 65 is fitted as standard with multi-spoke ceramic polished forged wheels. The front wheels come in size 9 J x 19 and are fitted with 255/35 R 19 tyres, while the rear wheels in size 10 J x 20 are fitted with 285/30 R 20 tyres.

Class materials, comprehensive scope of standard appointments: the interior

The lavishly appointed interior covers every wish: the standard scope includes sports seats in nappa leather with optimised lateral support and model-specific upholstery layout, multicontour function and seat heating. The driver has a good grip on the AMG SL at all times with the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather featuring a flattened bottom rim and silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles. Carbon-fibre trim and the analogue clock in IWC design highlight the high-performance roadster’s special standing. Optional carbon-grain aluminium trim lends the open-top two-seaters an even more personal touch.

2017 Mercedes-Benz SL In Detail

The SL is an all-season vehicle that is fully suited for daily use, but above all it is a dream car for those special moments as a couple. Whatever its owner desires - it fulfils the expectations with technical perfection

The Mercedes-Benz SL is the top performer in a wide variety of disciplines: an elegant roadster for relaxed, comfortable cruising or a dynamic coupé for sporty trips on winding roads. Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales & Marketing: “The SL is an all-season vehicle that is fully suited for daily use, but above all it is a dream car for those special moments as a couple. Whatever its owner desires – it fulfils the expectations with technical perfection.”

A particularly eye-catching feature of the new SL is the revised front end: the standard, unique diamond radiator grille extends downwards. Two powerdomes accentuate the long, drawn-out bonnet. Also adding to the unmistakable new appearance of the SL is the new standard-fit LED Intelligent Light System with headlamp housing extending far to the outside. The sporty silhouette is emphasised by the enlarged cosmetic air outlets with wing-like chrome inserts in the dynamic, broad vehicle wings and the exterior mirrors positioned on the beltline.

The model range now comprises the SL 400 with V6 engine uprated to 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm (additional 25 kW/35 hp and also 20 Nm) as well as the SL 500 with the powerful 335 kW (455 hp) V8 engine. As standard the power transfer is handled by the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. With DYNAMIC SELECT the vehicle characteristics can be adjusted in seconds at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the setup of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering at the driver’s behest.

Additional variants include the two Mercedes-AMG models in the guise of the SL 63 and SL 65, the latter with a V12 engine.

Exterior design: new appearance for the athletic aesthete

The Mercedes-Benz SL has always been athletic and aesthetic at the same time. Now the designers have worked on bringing these characteristics even more to the fore. A particularly eye-catching feature is the revised front end of the new edition of the SL: for its new appearance, traditional elements have been enhanced in an innovative and unmistakable manner. Inspiration came from the legendary 300 SL Panamericana racing car with its steeply raked radiator grille. This extends downwards, thus creating a completely individual “face” for the SL within the Mercedes-Benz model range. The grille is executed as the diamond radiator grille as standard.

Mercedes-Benz SL 500. Brilliant blue with AMG Line.

Mercedes-Benz SL 500. Brilliant blue with AMG Line.

The sculpted shape of the radiator grille harmonises perfectly with the now standard AMG bodystyling with the front apron in an A-wing design, which features a front splitter in the vehicle colour. Two powerdomes on the bonnet invoke the sporting heritage of the SL, while light-catching contours give additional structure to the bonnet.

Also adding to the unmistakable new appearance of the SL is the new standard-fit LED Intelligent Light System with headlamp housing extending far to the outside and torch-shaped unit comprising the daytime running lamp/position lamp and direction indicator. The edge area and other design components of the headlamp housing are retained in black – conveying a high-level of perceived quality and an effective sense of depth.

The side view of the SL reveals iconic sports car proportions, characterised by the long bonnet, the AMG side sill panels, the broad wheelbase and passenger compartment positioned towards the rear. Fine details create additional highlights. These include enlarged cosmetic air outlets with wing-like chrome inserts in the dynamic, broad vehicle wings.

With the roof down the SL shows off its attractive roadster contours with short, steeply angled A-pillars and frameless side windows. There is nothing to disrupt the clear lines: all aerials, as well as the roll-over bar, are fully integrated and thus not visible, while the electric draught-stop (optional extra) can be extended and retracted at the push of a button.

The rear end points to the high driving dynamics of the SL. The basis for this is the sense of width created by the large track gauge, accentuated by the AMG rear apron with side air intakes. The lower section of the diffuser incorporates the integral tailpipe trim elements as well as the centrally arranged rear fog lamp and reversing light.

The broad, one-piece tail lights are entirely coloured in red and pick up the flowing lines of the vehicle sides and carry them into the rear. As is typical of the brand, they feature a horizontal design with the wedge-shaped direction indicator at the top and the tail lamp and also brake lamp below.

Brilliant blue and designo selenite grey magno are available to choose from by way of new colours, plus the range of light-alloy wheels in the size 48.3 cm (19 inches) has also been extended significantly. New additions include a 10-spoke wheel and a 5-spoke wheel, both with a high-sheen finish in high-gloss black. On top of this there are six additional new AMG wheels as part of the accessories range.

Interior design: sports car atmosphere in comfortable surroundings

Minimal gap dimensions and fully padded beltlines are just two examples of the top-class standards which the SL also embodies in the refined interior. The ambient lighting with three selectable colours (solar red, polar blue, polar white) ensures an emotional lighting mood. The upper part of the dashboard forms a unit with the door beltlines, and four round air vents featuring an engine look create sporty highlights.

The three-spoke sports steering wheel has a magnesium structure and features an ergonomic grip area and a high-quality finish. The airbag module too is finished in nappa leather with topstitching. Twelve control buttons provide access to the menu navigation in the instrument cluster as well as the audio system, telephone and voice entry. The steering wheel rim has a flattened bottom section, and silver-coloured steering wheel shift paddles enable manual gear changes to be made.

The instrument cluster with 2-tube look for displaying speed and rpm combines classic circular instruments with modern display technology. Dials and pointers have a new sporty design. Up to 60 km/h, the speed scale is indicated in steps of 10. When starting up, the pointers move from the 6 o’clock position once around the entire scale and then return to the starting position. The driver is also greeted in style by the TFT multifunction display located between the circular instruments: on start-up it shows a front view of the SL.

Lovingly designed details such as the analogue clock (optional extra) adorn the centre console. Its new graphic design is based on the instrument cluster. Depending on the transmission mode selected by DYNAMIC SELECT, the media display presents dynamic driving data: longitudinal and lateral acceleration (in a G-force cross) or torque and output.

Comprehensive individualisation of the interior is possible with the broad selection of leather finishes and trim elements. The colour saddle brown is new in combination with nappa leather and Exclusive nappa leather.

Intelligent Drive: Driving Assistance package Plus and LED Intelligent Light System

As standard the SL features Active Brake Assist, known as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS in other model series. In addition to radar-based proximity warning and braking assistance by Adaptive Brake Assist, this Active Brake Assist system carries out autonomous braking to reduce the danger of rear-end collisions. If the driver fails to act when a risk of a collision is detected, despite the warning lamp in the instrument cluster and the intermittent audible alert, the system will initiate automatic braking. This significantly reduces the vehicle speed. At low relative speeds, this intervention may be sufficient to prevent a rear-end collision with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles.

Optionally available for the SL is the Driving Assistance package with stereo camera and in some cases new as well as improved functions. Overview of the features of the Driving Assistance package Plus:

Distance Pilot DISTRONIC and Steering Pilot: assists the driver with maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front and staying in the centre of the lane. The radar and camera-based system brakes when necessary and accelerates again, if possible, to the preset desired speed. The Steering Pilot can take the strain off the driver when it comes to lateral guidance of the vehicle. On straight roads and gentle curves it generates steering torque which contributes to keeping the vehicle in the centre of the lane. To achieve this the system makes use of a stereo camera to orient itself based on clearly visible road markings and, at lower speeds, on the vehicle in front.

Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function: is able to warn the driver of impending crash situations, provide optimum support with emergency braking and if necessary also automatically apply the brakes itself. In addition to detecting slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it also detects crossing traffic at junctions, the tail ends of traffic jams and pedestrians in the danger zone ahead of the vehicle, for example. The PRE-SAFE® Brake is able to detect not only slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles but also pedestrians, to brake autonomously if the driver fails to react and as a result help to avoid accidents up to 50 km/h and reduce their severity up to 72 km/h. In flowing traffic, the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides assistance according to the same mode of operation throughout the speed range from 7 to 200 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz SL 500. Brilliant blue with AMG Line.

Mercedes-Benz SL 500. Brilliant blue with AMG Line.

Active Blind Spot Assist: is able to warn the driver when changing lanes, for example, and can contribute to averting an impending collision by means of one-sided brake actuation.

Active Lane Keeping Assist: is able to detect unintentional lane departure, warn the driver by means of pulsating steering wheel vibrations and contribute, by means of one-sided brake actuation, to guiding the vehicle back into its lane.

PRE-SAFE® PLUS: if a rear-end collision appears imminent, the system can activate preventive measures to protect occupants. These include warning vehicles following behind and applying the vehicle brakes when at a standstill.

The optional Parking Pilot can take the strain off the driver by helping him/her to search for a suitable parking space and making it easier to manoeuvre into and out of parking spaces with active steering intervention. A new feature is assistance with parking perpendicular to the road. The Parking Pilot includes six ultrasonic sensors in each of the front and rear bumpers which measure the size of the parking space when driving past it. In addition, the Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is also a part of the system. It provides visual and audible warnings of obstacles in front of and behind the vehicle, thus helping to avoid damage when manoeuvring.

For optimum visibility on country roads and motorways, when cornering and on bends, the standard-fit LED Intelligent Light System automatically adapts to all light and driving conditions. The LED technology features low energy consumption, a long service life and a pleasant white light which approximates the daylight spectrum. The five functions of the LED Intelligent Light System include motorway mode, cornering light function, camera-based active light function, roundabout light function and also the enhanced fog light function. On unlocking the SL, the welcome light also greets the driver with an exceptional lighting display: the LED fibre optics in the headlamps light up in blue after opening the vehicle and then transition to white locator lighting.

Anti-dazzle continuous high beam comes courtesy of the optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus. When high beam is switched on, this system always makes the optimum headlamp range available. The driver can concentrate on the traffic and does not have to continually switch between low beam and high beam. Via a camera positioned behind the windscreen, the Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus detects other illuminated road users, for example oncoming vehicles or vehicles travelling in front, and adjusts the headlamps independently to the new traffic conditions. A mechanism in the headlamp module masks the portion of the cone of light of the LED headlamps where there are other vehicles to prevent their drivers from being dazzled. The driver can therefore leave the high-beam headlamps on at all times and use their full range without bothering or endangering other road users. This function is active at speeds above 30 km/h when travelling in the dark on roads without street lighting.

Comfort appointments: convenient operation of the vario-roof

SL fans also appreciate the sports car icon on account of its high suitability for everyday use. With the facelift Mercedes-Benz has improved the comfort appointments even further. These include operation of the electrohydraulic vario-roof. If when opening or closing the roof the vehicle has to move off due to the traffic conditions, the process which was started when at a standstill can be continued up to a speed of approx. 40 km/h.

Equally new is the automatic boot separator. If the separator is in the upper position for increased boot capacity, it automatically moves down when the top is opened. Conversely, the automatic boot separator returns to the upper position, also by means of electric operation, as soon as the boot flap is opened.

A further practical detail in the boot is the loading setting – the roof stowed in the boot can be swung upwards by approximately 25 degrees at the press of a button. The KEYLESS-GO Convenience package includes remote closing of the boot lid as well as HANDS-FREE ACCESS. With this, the lid opens or closes automatically after making a kicking motion with the foot beneath the rear bumper. The automatic boot separator additionally moves into the upper position when opening the lid to provide clear access to the loading aperture. Another feature which has been retained is the unique optional extra MAGIC SKY CONTROL: when closed, the panoramic vario-roof automatically changes from dark to transparent or vice-versa within just a few seconds.

When it comes to ambient lighting, Mercedes-Benz has opted for LED technology and has extended the colour range: in addition to solar red, the colours polar blue and polar white can also be chosen. A further practical finishing touch: the stowage compartment in the centre console now features two USB ports. One of the highlights is ambient lighting with projection of the brand logo.
A further special feature comes in the guise of MAGIC VISION CONTROL, the intelligent and highly efficient wash/wipe system. The innovative design of the wiper blade always delivers washer fluid immediately in front of wipe lip, via the water feed line integrated into the blade – and it does this in both wiping directions. The result is that there is no gush of water when spraying fluid, which can impair visibility, and at the same time the maximum cleaning effect is achieved. In addition, the water stays on the windscreen, thus also enabling convenient cleaning of the windscreen even with the roof open. When the roof is open, the water is dispensed in such a way that no moisture gets into the interior. Optionally the wiper can be heated to prevent snow or ice from sticking in winter. It is with such details that the Roadster-Coupé underscores its exceptional position as a comfortable sports car suitable for all-year-round use.

Connectivity: Mercedes me connect featuring a host of functions

The new SL is intelligently networked and “always on”. This is ensured thanks to the standard-fit communications module (on-board SIM card) which enables the use of Mercedes me connect services. The available Standard Services currently include Accident Recovery, Breakdown Management and Maintenance Management, as well as Telediagnostics, for example.

Also available as standard is the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system. In an accident this service automatically connects the occupants with the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call Centre and sends the position and status of the vehicle to the rescue operations centre. A rescue vehicle can then be dispatched immediately. The system works automatically, but can also be triggered manually.
The optional Remote Online feature provides the technical basis for the SL to use Remote Services. For example, navigation destinations can be sent to the vehicle from a computer or smartphone. Geofencing, Vehicle Tracker and Parked Vehicle Locator, Remote Door Locking and Unlocking or Remote Retrieval of Vehicle Status – these are additional Remote Services and Tracking Services that can currently be activated separately from Daimler AG for three years on the basis of this technical preparation.

With the Smartphone Integration package compatible smartphones can be integrated into the vehicle via Apple® CarPlay® and used via voice-operated control for example. In addition, the other vehicle controls can also be used. Safe and comfortable use on the road is always ensured.

In the case of Apple® CarPlay® for example, the system supports making and receiving calls, navigation and listening to music, receiving and sending text messages and emails as well as Siri ® voice control. The selected apps from third-party providers that are also supported include Stitcher Radio® and Spotify®.

The functionality of COMAND Online (optional extra on the SL 400) now includes internet radio as well as Live Traffic Information, for example. The latter service uses real-time traffic data for dynamic route guidance with more accurate arrival times.

A concert room atmosphere even with the top down as well as less bulk in the doors due to reduced installation space are ensured by the Frontbass system, which celebrated its premiere in the SL in 2012. It makes intelligent use of the free installation space in the aluminium cavities in front of the footwell as resonating chambers for the base speakers.

The optional Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system has a 10-channel DSP amplifier with a total output of 600 watts and 11 high-performance speakers including Frontbass.

An even more sophisticated sound is produced by the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG sound system. It uses a 16-channel DSP amplifier with a total output of 900 watts in conjunction with 12 high-performance speakers including Frontbass. Its twin-lens tweeters provide a futuristic show effect with LED light strips – adapted to instrument lighting. The B&O-specific COMAND Menu True Image™ enables individual special settings to be made.

Even more choice: the Curve function on the ABC suspension for the first time

The steel suspension of the standard chassis features continuously variable dampers. In conjunction with the AMG Line equipment the suspension is lowered by 10 mm and fitted with harsher springs and torsion-bar stabilisers. The driver can leave the setting of the basic characteristics of the suspension to the control electronics via DYNAMIC SELECT – from comfortable to extremely sporty in the new third Sport+ mode.

The characteristics of the transmission modes:

  • Eco (E), fuel-efficient setting with “sailing” function
  • Comfort (C), comfortable setting for long journeys or on rough roads
  • Sport (S), sporty setting for a dynamic driving style
  • Sport Plus (S+), extremely sporty setting – particularly suitable for flat road surfaces
  • Individual (I) allows individual adjustment of the various parameters to suit the driver’s requirements.

Alternatively there is another option available in the guise of Active Body Control (ABC) with curve tilting function. ABC reduces body movements when moving off, braking and cornering. The spring struts of the ABC suspension are adjusted to the respective driving conditions via so-called plunger cylinders (via oil pressure), therefore making torsion-bar stabilisers on the front and rear axle, which can reduce comfort, unnecessary. The dampers only have to eliminate wheel vibrations and can be set up in such a way as to ensure comfort without losing any of the sportiness. In addition, the vehicle level can be adjusted to any unevenness: At higher speeds the SL is automatically lowered by 13 mm for more favourable aerodynamics. Conversely, at the press of a button it is possible to raise the vehicle by 50 mm for driving on rough roads.

On top of this there is the curve tilting function which applies a maximum of 2.65 degrees in the speed range from 15 to 180 km/h. It can be set via DYNAMIC SELECT (“Curve”), noticeably reducing the effects of lateral acceleration on the vehicle occupants. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes in conjunction with ABC suspension:

  • Curve (CV) increases ride comfort
  • Comfort (C) is the comfortable setting for long journeys or on rough roads
  • Sport (S) as a sporty setting enables a particularly dynamic driving style
  • Sport Plus (S+) is an extremely sporty setting – particularly suitable for flat road surfaces
  • Individual (I) allows individual adjustment of the various parameters to suit the driver’s requirements.
  • Lighter and stiffer: elaborate all-aluminium bodyshell

The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the well-known abbreviation “SL” – Super-Light – literally at its word. Systematic weight reduction is just as much a part of the outstanding design features of the new SL as it was for its namesake, the original SL from 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. Here for the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell as part of large-scale series production. Only relatively few components are made using other materials. High-strength steel tubes are integrated in the A-pillars to increase safety.

The aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kg less than if it had been produced using steel technology. The aluminium structure is not only lighter, but also superior in terms of rigidity, safety and comfort. This is thanks to intelligent lightweight construction with components optimised for their respective intended purposes. For example, different types of aluminium processing are used. Depending on their function, the components are produced using gravity die casting or vacuum die casting, made from extruded sections or used as aluminium sheets of a variety of different wall thicknesses. The result is high levels of rigidity and safety as well as better vibration characteristics.

With its intelligent lightweight construction, which also comprises new bonding techniques, the SL has also become a role model for the current S-Class. The total of six models in the luxury class are characterised by a high percentage of strategically deployed light alloys such as aluminium or magnesium.

Tradition: a dream sports car for more than 60 years

The exceptional position occupied by the SL in the history of Mercedes-Benz is also evident from its very name: due to its iconic status, the SL has retained its tradition-rich model designation even after the introduction of the new nomenclature. For more than 60 years now, the Mercedes-Benz model range with the “SL” acronym has enthralled sports car fans around the world.

This legend has its roots in the world of motorsport: in 1952 the 300 SL racing sports car (W 194), with its successes in international competitions, became the spark for the development of two exciting series-production sports cars in the guise of the gullwing coupé and roadster. Their birth ultimately took place in New York: it was there, at the International Motor Sports Show in February 1954, that Mercedes-Benz presented not one but two now legendary SL models: the 300 SL gullwing Coupé (W 198 I) and the open-top 190 SL (W 121). Based on the legendary “gullwing”, the open-top 300 SL Roadster (W 198 II) appeared on the market in 1957, and was built up to 1963 in parallel with the 190 SL model.

In 1963 the SL series W 113 appeared, referred to as the “Pagoda SL” on account of the characteristic shape of its hardtop roof. This was followed in 1971 by the R 107 series which – also due to the long production period of 18 years – achieved the highest production volume of all SL series to date. In March 1989 Mercedes-Benz presented the R 129 series, which was characterised by numerous technical innovations such as the sensor-controlled roll-over bar and the integral seat. It opened up a new dimension of performance for the SL and was replaced in 2001, after a production period of twelve years, by the R 230 series. The SL now sported a steel folding top and with its pronounced sportiness harked back to the unique tradition of its legendary forefather. The current generation of the SL ultimately appeared in the spring of 2012 in the guise of the R 231 series, which combines the high performance level of its predecessor with maximum levels of comfort and efficiency.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Brabus 800 Roadster Revealed

The Mercedes SL 65 AMG Tuned by Brabus produces 588 kW/800 hp, 1,420 Nm of torque & a top speed of 217 mph

Brabus, the Mercedes tuner widely known in the automotive world for building some of the world’s most powerful passenger cars, has just announced that they’ll be displaying their new Brabus 800 Roadster at the Geneva Motor Show next week.  Based on the Mercedes SL 65 AMG, the Mercedes two-seater is powered by a 12-cylinder Biturbo engine that’s been updated with the Brabus T65 RS tuning program, bumping output to 588 kW / 800 hp (788 bhp) of power and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm.  This results in an insane 0-62 mph sprint time of 3.7 seconds and a mere 9.8 second jaunt to hit 124 mph. If those numbers weren’t enough to impress you with the Brabus SL 65 AMG, how about an electronically limited top speed of 217 mph?  Putting that speed in terms you may relate to, at yesterday’s Daytona 500, top speeds hovered just over 200mph.

In addition to the engine upgrades, Brabus offers equipment updates as well, including plenty of carbon-fiber body parts that help make the car more aerodynamic finished in your choice of matte or glossy. The Brabus SL rides on a set of Monoblock R “Platinum Edition” forged wheel wrapped in 255/30 ZR 20 tires (front) 305/25 ZR 20 tires (rear) high performance tires.

There is also a special control module that lowers the roadster about one inch (25mm) – while it may seem inconsequential while driving standard highway speeds, hit the track at 200 mph+ and you want to be as aerodynamically efficient as possible..

Lastly, Brabus has upgraded the Brabus 800 Roadster’s interior with all of the finest and tasteful finishing available.

Which Would You Rather – the SL63 AMG or the SL65 AMG

Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, there’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer

Choice is good and that’s why when it comes to AMG versions of the SL-Class, you have two: the SL63 AMG and the SL65 AMG. But which one would you choose? Do you go with the tail-wagging SL63 and its hand-built biturbo V-8, or is the blunt force of the SL65’s hand-built biturbo V-12 more your style?

Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 respectively, there’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer.

The SL63 AMG with the new 5.5-liter direct-injection biturbo AMG V8 (530 hp, 590 lb-ft) with ECO Start/Stop and AMG 7-speed MCT with 4 shift modes and RACESTART function. Standard AMG DRL’s, twin-lamella grille, and trunk spoiler. Optional Performance Package yields 557hp, 664 lb-ft.

Then you have the Mercedes SL65 AMG with the high-performance 6.0-liter V12 model (621hp, 738lb-ft) now features 7-speed automatic transmission.

In the video below we get to see both of the venerable Benzes rocketing around two-lane roads, at times simultaneously. The drivers overtake each other in what could possibly be the world’s classiest game of leap frog before the clip fades away to deliver basic engine specs.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Anniversary Commercial

Mercedes unveiled their commercial for the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary edition & let us know the only place a man can cry

Mercedes AMG unveiled their latest commercial for the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary special edition. The commercial lets us know the only place men can cry, and many of us will cry as only 45 units will be produced. The SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary edition celebrates the 45 years that passed since Mercedes started working with AMG. The Anniversary Edition is powered by a standard 6.0 liter V12 Engine with 463 kW (630 hp) at 4800 – 5400 rpm and 1000 Nm at 2300 – 4300 rpm*

The designers have created a new paint finish exclusively for the SL 65 AMG “45th ANNIVERSARY”: designo magno graphite. This grey color with its satin look helps to highlights the V12 roadster’s supremely powerful character. The matte finish brings out the contours of the aluminium body while high-gloss chrome applications add an interesting contrast.

This close involvement right from the concept development stage for new models spawns high-performance automobiles which embody a perfect blend
of hallmark Mercedes-Benz genes and AMG features.

Carlsson C25 New Photo Gallery

Carlsson C25 owners choose their paint combinations and materials, received a completely customized Mercedes C25

It is the dream of every designer to create a classic Gran Turismo and as far as the C25, based on the Mercedes SL65 AMG, is concerned, Carlsson head designer Rolf Schepp did just that and did it perfectly. The C25 is designed to combine emotional character with safety-relevant aspects and high road capability, but Carlsson also designs the C25 entirely according to customer demands. The result is  perfectly sculpted vehicle unique to the owner. We were recently sent photos of a custom designed Carlsson C25 in matte grey that we felt was was worthy of a look.

The front view

Dominated by the dynamic and aggressive trapezoid shapes of the giant air inlets, typical for Carlsson and which perfectly interact in a tension-filled contrast with the sovereign lights.

The powerfully vaulted wings which can be perceived as landmarks from the driver´s seat flow into the bonnet with its strong contours at the sides with integrated power domes. In connection with the vertically adjusted daytime running lights, the headlights render a superb racing character.

The side view

The side clearly confirms the classic GT-proportions with front central engine under the elongated bonnet, the firm aero tail and the formally reduced roof construction. Basically, it consists of three plane arches which are dynamically connected by an elaborately offset line management.

The brawny and muscular car body impresses with its crouched appearance with powerfully modelled wings dominating the side view.

A main arch spanning over the cockpit is supported by two arch-shaped wings at the front and at the back which majestically rise over the wheels.

The Carlsson designers created the wheel flange and wings, the negative rear view and the lower front from vertical lines lunging forward and rendering a fast forward-moving impression.

The elaborate graphical design of the motor engine ventilation, wheel flanges, wing edges and door section corresponds with the strongly vaulted sides and renders a rich contrast.

The rear view

The entire rear section has been basically designed like a generous cave in order to integrate the upper rear edge generating downthrust in the best possible formal and logical way. Deliberately, Rolf Schepp puts the dynamic focus on the powerfully designed double diffuser with the significantly integrated end pipe blends which make the rear look not so high.

Rolf Schepp continues to apply the paramount trapezoid shapes from the front which are so typical for Carlsson also to the back by a perfect interaction of the boot lid and the double diffuser. The GT-typical, flowing and filigree roof construction is supported by the broad shoulders of the rear wings and flows into the gently curved ascent of the back tear-off edge.

With the Carlsson C25, the automobile manufactory consequently lights the way into future. The design of the Gran Turismo accomplished to connect agility, elegance and functionality in a unique automobile.

The technical philosophy of the Carlsson C25

The Carlsson C25 has been born from a revolutionary idea. For the first time, the automobile manufactory positions a Gran Turismo in an entirely new way. The coupé is the first own developed car by Carlsson and it combines two vehicle concepts which up to now have been considered as incompatible. On the one hand, the Carlsson C25 renders top performances with its 753 hp strong engine and an acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 3.7 seconds. And on the other hand it breaks out from the supercar category and offers comfortable travel performances and an unsurpassable road capability. Therefore, the Carlsson C25 combines the best from two worlds and with its limited edition of only 25 pieces it offers an outstanding exclusiveness.

The V12-Biturbo owes its 753 hp (554 kW) to Carlsson’s experience and art of engineering. This performance is guaranteed by the interaction between the stainless steel exhaust system, the special sports air filters and the engine electronics especially adjusted to the C25 with its special engine characteristic maps for injection and ignition. Also the charge air ventilation and the manifold are exactly adjusted to the car. Therefore, the high-performance engine renders a maximum torque of 1320 Newton metres, electronically limited to 1150 Newton metres and accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in only 3.7 seconds.

The comprehensive adjustment between car body, aerodynamics, engine performance and undercarriage renders an unsurpassable driving experience. The Carlsson C25 is no serial automobile with an oversized implanted engine, but a special automobile with perfectly adjusted components.

Intelligent undercarriage guarantees perfect road capability

But this is not the only unique selling point of the Carlsson C25. No Gran Turismo with comparable performance data has ever reached the maximum road capability as incorporated by the Carlsson C25. This is among others rendered by the suspension technology C-Tronic® SUSPENSION. The intelligent system recognises the road condition as well as the driving behaviour and continuously adjusts the remaining spring travel and the damping settings to it. This guarantees driving pleasure in narrow curves due to a perfectly limited vehicle roll as well as a comfortable journey on long distances and bad road conditions.

For perfect travel comfort, the Carlsson C25 offers all safety- and assistance systems which fulfil the high Mercedes-Benz standards: ABS, ESP, Airbags, crash-behaviour and pedestrian protection.

Therefore, the Carlsson C25 has the advantage that the Gran Turismo can still be serviced by any Mercedes-Benz garage. The customer is not bound to one dealer specialised in the Carlsson C25, but can always rely on the closest Mercedes-Benz garage.

Intuitive operation and high-quality haptics

In addition to its unsurpassable road capability, the Carlsson C25 offers an operating concept which seems surprisingly familiar to the driver. The cockpit with the central instruments tilted towards the driver, the sport steering wheel and the comfortable seats are made for intuitive operation. The engineers and designers put special emphasis on the arrangement and design of the instruments and that shows in the high-quality haptics and the superb intuitive operation.

But the Carlsson C25 does not only convince with its positioning combining the advantages of a high-performance automobile with perfect road capability. Also when it comes to the price, the Gran Turismo from Merzig/Germany is very attractive. For cars with a comparable performance from Italy or Scandinavia, the customer has to invest at least the double if not the triple price. But even then those car manufacturers can’t guarantee their customers the exclusiveness of the Carlsson C25 as there is only one automobile available per country.

In the tradition of large coachbuilders

With its first own developed car, the automobile manufactory continues the tradition of large coachbuilders. This already shows in the design of the Carlsson C25 which bears the origins of the legendary Mercedes models such as the W 196 or the “Autobahnkurier” (Autobahn cruiser). Carlsson combined this tradition with the continuously developing Carlsson design which is reflected in the typical trapezoid shapes. As so often with traditional companies which originated from family businesses, the automobile manufactory Carlsson developed a unique car which only uses the platform of a large car company.

Already between both World Wars or from the 1950s onwards, smaller companies have taken a significant influence on larger car companies. This included Mulliner and Park Ward with their groundbreaking work for Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Also Swiss Peter Monteverdi made history with his new auto body for the Ferrari Monza or other cars which combined US-American engines with Italian car bodies such as the Monteverdi Hai 450 with its hand-made carriage.

In exactly the same way as these specialists, Carlsson and the C25 today present which possibilities there are when combining experience, passion and the art of engineering.

2013 Mercedes SL65 AMG V12 Roadster To Debut in New York

The unparalleled output propels the 2013 SL65 AMG from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds with a top speed in the U.S. of 186 mph

Mercedes-AMG is launching itself into the 2012 roadster season with a vengeance. Arriving in U.S. dealerships in November, the new MY2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG V12 Roadster is making its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine generates a peak output of 621 hp and a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. The use of an all-aluminum body-in-white delivers a drastic weight reduction as the MY13 SL65 AMG is 254 pounds lighter than before. The distinctive front end is dominated by the new “twin-blade” grille with two blade-shaped fins and the lower horizontal bar in the front skirt in high-gloss chrome.

The SL65 AMG joins the SL550 roadster and the SL63 AMG roadster. The SL550 has a starting retail price of $106,375 and arrives in U.S. Mercedes-Benz dealerships in May. The SL63 AMG arrives in July.

“The combination of exclusive V12 dynamics and cultivated roadster pleasure was already unique in the previous model. We are certain that, with the new SL65 AMG, we have developed a stunning high-performance automobile beyond compare for a small, but loyal fan base,” says Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The intelligent lightweight design of the bodyshell also contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption. A key element in the improved fuel efficiency is the result of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission, the ECO stop/start function, and improvements to the internal efficiency of the engine and alternator management. Despite a considerable improvement in fuel economy, the peak output of the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine is up from 604 hp to 621 hp. The maximum torque stands at a mighty 738 lb-ft.

This unparalleled output provides amazing propulsion for the new SL65 AMG – acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds. Top speed in the U.S. market stands at 186 mph. The key attributes of the AMG biturbo twelve-cylinder include its heart stopping acceleration, and seamless power delivery combined with a distinctive AMG V12 soundtrack. In short, the SL65 AMG captures the imagination with its refined, stylish performance.

AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine with new technology

The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine (M 279) is based on the previous M 275 unit and has been extensively developed for its application in the new SL65 AMG. New turbochargers with an enlarged spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate channels optimized for airflow deliver an additional 17 hp. The multi-spark ignition with twelve twin ignition coils not only makes for smoother running, but also works together with a new, more powerful engine management and optimized cylinder heads to provide even more effective combustion. The outcome is fewer exhaust emissions, which is also in large part due to the optimized catalytic converter system.

The redeveloped AMG sport exhaust system incorporates a modified pipe layout for improved flow coupled with a weight reduction of seven pounds resulting from reduced wall thicknesses.

And it is not just the inner attributes of the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine that are stunning – the engine also looks inspiring. The carbon-fiber and aluminum engine cover further underscores the exceptional nature of the powerful twelve-cylinder that lies beneath.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission

For the first time, AMG is combining the 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission. The wide ratio spread of the seven-speed automatic transmission delivers significantly lower revving and helps in the reduction of fuel consumption. A new fuel-economy torque converter, reduced-friction bearings and transmission oil thermal management further increase the efficiency of transferring power to the wheels.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission features four individual drive programs that can be selected at the touch of a button on the center console – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport plus (S+) and Manual (M). The ECO stop/start function is always active in C mode. For the greatest sense of involvement and dynamics, there is the automatic double-declutch function for downshifting, as well as brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load. The latter also reduces shift times.

Intelligent lightweight design featuring all-aluminum body-in-white and carbon

Compared to the steel construction of the previous model, the all-aluminum body-in-white of the new SL65 AMG delivers weight savings, as well as superior stiffness, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight design also means optimizing components for their specific application. For instance, an array of different aluminum processes come into play – components are made using gravity die casting or vacuum pressure casting, worked into extruded profile or used as aluminum sheet with varying wall thicknesses. The results are a high degree of stiffness and safety and improved vibration characteristics. Engineers made use of the even lighter magnesium for part of the cover behind the fuel tank. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for reasons of safety.

Further weight reduction comes courtesy of the rear decklid. The internal frame is made from carbon composite material. The plastic exterior shell is then fastened to the extremely stiff carbon component with adhesive. The result is a weight saving of eleven pounds compared with a conventional rear lid. The innovative solution is being used initially in AMG’s SL models. The outcome of the many lightweight design innovations is that the curb weight of 4,299 pounds for the new SL65 AMG is 254 pounds less than that of the previous model.

AMG sport suspension based on Active Body Control

When it comes to the chassis, Mercedes-AMG is focused on lightweight engineering. The four-link front suspension incorporates steering knuckles and control arms in aluminum, which also features in almost all suspension parts on the multilink rear axle. Agility is not the only aspect to benefit from the reduction of unsprung masses; the response characteristics of the spring-and-damper units are also improved. Like the previous model, the new SL65 AMG is fitted with the ABC active suspension system as standard. The AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control is a further developed version of the setup in the SL63 AMG with the eight-cylinder engine, tuned specifically for this application.

Handling and performance were the top priorities during conception, development and testing. Two chassis settings are available for selection at the touch of a button – a very sporty setting with reduced roll rate and tighter body damping (“Sport”) and a program offering a high degree of long-distance comfort (“Comfort”). More negative camber on both axles, plus completely re-engineered elastokinematics deliver increased agility and higher cornering speeds.

New electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering

Combined with the all-new, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the V12 top-of-the-range model offers a stunning ride with excellent dynamics and very clear feedback at the edge of the performance envelope. The steering ratio is constant and direct, while the power assistance adjusts in line with the chassis mode. Standard equipment also includes the 3-stage ESP®, a specialty exclusive to AMG with “SPORT Handling” mode for enthusiastic drivers. The enormous engine power is harnessed with the aid of AMG rear-axle locking differential, which is also standard equipment.

Top deceleration figures, perfect modulation and excellent stability – all standard features of an AMG high-performance brake system. The same applies to the all-new brakes on the SL65 AMG – on the front axle are 15.4 x 1.4 in. compound discs with six-piston fixed calipers, while the rear axle boasts 14.2 x 1.0 in. integral discs with single-piston floating calipers. An electric parking brake is standard equipment. The even more powerful and weight-optimized AMG carbon ceramic brake system familiar from the SLS AMG is available as optional equipment.

New AMG “face” with two blade-like fins

The SL65 AMG is clearly recognizable as a stylish and exclusive high-performance roadster not just technically, but also visually. The SL65 AMG is presented for the first time with the new AMG “face”. The two dominant visual elements – the grille and the lower air inlet – remain, but have been reinterpreted to give them a more distinctively dynamic and premium look. The central styling feature is the new twin-blade grille finished in high-gloss chrome. The Mercedes star is mounted on two blade-like fins with aerofoil profiles. The stronger arrow-form of the grille optimizes the vehicle’s longitudinal proportions, adding even more visual emphasis to the aerodynamic, minimalist design.

The stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles is retained beneath the twin-blade grille. Along the lower edge of the air intake is a slit beneath a fine black fin for optimum airflow to the cooling modules – a perfect combination of design and high technology. The lower horizontal bar on the front skirt is finished in high-gloss chrome and is lent significant visual depth by the slit above it, creating a premium visual accent. The twin-blade grille and lower horizontal element are two corresponding design features that emphasize the new AMG brand “face” – this look will be further developed in forthcoming AMG models, increasing even more the visual recognition of the AMG performance brand.

The top-of-the-range model is distinguished from the SL63 AMG by carefully placed applications in high-gloss chrome – as well as the twin-blade grille and the lower horizontal bar on the AMG front skirt, the bezels in the AMG-specific LED daytime running lights, the side fins on the fenders and fins on the hood all have the same surface finish. The characteristic AMG styling of the SL65 AMG also includes the front skirt with large openings for cooling the engine oil, water, charge air and transmission oil, the specially designed sill panels, the AMG spoiler lip and the rear skirt with a diffuser visual and body-color inlay.

Typical V12 features are not only the two chromed, standalone dual end pipes of the AMG sports exhaust, but also the V12 BITURBO lettering on the fenders and the titanium grey painted and polished 5-spoke AMG alloy wheels with 255/35 R 19 tires on the front and 285/30 R 19 on the rear. Optional AMG forged alloy multi-spoke wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 tires at the front and 285/30 R 20 at the rear reduce unsprung mass are also available. The forged wheels are also available in matte black with polished outer rims.

Retractable hard-top with MAGIC SKY CONTROL

The sixth generation of the SL offers a space-saving electro-hydraulic retractable hard-top that converts the SL65 AMG from a roadster to a coupe in less than 20 seconds. In contrast to the previous model, the new SL comes with the unique MAGIC SKY CONTROL. Its transparency can be switched from light to dark at the touch of a button.

Interior – pleasure for all the senses

Inside, the SL65 AMG is distinguished from its eight-cylinder sibling by highly exclusive design and equipment features. One particular eye-catcher is the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with one or two-color upholstery in exclusive leather featuring AMG-specific V12 diamond stitching. This distinctive upholstery also appears on the center door panels. The AMG logo embossed on the seat backs is a standard feature, as are AIRSCARF neck-level heating, the multi-contour function, seat memory and seat ventilation. The designo headliner in leather featuring AMG V12 diamond stitching provides a perfect finish that is both visual and tactile.

The cockpit design is reminiscent of the SLS AMG – the four air vents in jet-engine style, the E-SELECT gear lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all evocative of the super sports car. The selection of exquisite materials and high quality of workmanship in the interior of the SL65 AMG creates a truly sensual masterpiece. This is underscored by the AMG trim elements in carbon, the analog clock in IWC design, the chromed and white illuminated AMG entry trim and the AMG performance steering wheel incorporating an AMG logo in the lower metal spoke. A 225 mph scale in the AMG instrument panel and the AMG start-up display with exclusive AMG V12 BITURBO animation hints at the phenomenal dynamics of the SL65 AMG.

The twelve-cylinder roadster comes with an extensive list of standard equipment:

One of the world’s safest roadsters

Thanks to its collision-optimized aluminum structure, standard PRE-SAFE® System and assistance systems on a par with the S-Class, the SL is one of the safest roadsters in the world. The stiff aluminum body-in-white forms a stable occupant cell and provides precisely defined crumple zones front and rear. In the event of a rollover, the A-pillars in a steel/aluminum material mix and two automatic pop-up rollover bars offer outstanding protection for the passenger area.

The restraint systems that include two-phase driver and passenger airbags have been further developed. Head/thorax side impact airbags in the backrests protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. The NECK-PRO Active Head Restraints designed by Mercedes-Benz also feature as standard equipment. Pedestrian protection is enhanced by large surface-area, compliant impact surfaces.

Mercedes SL 65 AMG BiTurbo by INDEN Design

The tuner INDEN Design from Flammersbach has taken on the daunting task of upgrading the SL 65 AMG V12 BiTurbo

AMG produces one of the world’s most powerful roadsters, the SL 65 AMG V12 BiTurbo, since 2004. The roadster is built on the base of the Mercedes-Benz R230 and has the 6-liter engine (also used in Maybachs) offering up 612 hp (450 kW). The “natural” torque (in the truest sense of the word) of the engine is 1200 Nm, but it is limited by the engine control to 1000 Nm.

The noble tuner INDEN Design from Flammersbach near the Hessian Haiger has taken on the daunting task of upgrading the SL again . With Joachim Inden at the helm– the deep black roadster, INDEN tunes the beast and finishes it in black sapphire as a result of the conversion.

Let us begin with a front apron, which has huge holes for ventilation. The hood had to go through corrections as well. The front wings were widened, that required to change the inner wheel arches. Linking of this set of side skirts and front and rear wheel arches could hardly be made more individual. The rear wheel arches have considerably more volume now. At the rear, subtle spoiler and modified apron with rear diffuser are conspicuous.

Direct contact between the vehicle and asphalt is achieved by a perfectly adequate wheel / tire combination of three-part INDEN Champion 11×20 or 13×20-inch rims with 265/30 and 325/25R20 tires.

Electronic control module provides additional lowering by about 45 mm. The performance of the aforementioned engine was – not surprisingly – increased to 680 hp, and the Vmax-lock was removed. For the desired sonorous engine sound Black Sapphire exhaust pipes were installed. The interior of the INDEN’s SL 65 AMG V12 features a Black Series Steering Wheel in Alcantara.

Youcan take a look more closely at this vehicle at the Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen from May 5 to 11, 2011.

Carlsson C25 Royale Super GT Based on SL65 AMG in Geneva

The limited production C25 Royale Super GT is available to 25 buyers with a starting price of $594,122

Debuting at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Carlsson presented its C25 Royale Super GT, based on the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG,  with carbon roof and exterior, optimised driving dynamics and perfected electronics. Carlsson’s philosophy remains the same: with excellent design and the utmost in exclusivity, the C25 Royale combines maximum driving performance with everyday practicality.  The limited production C25 Royale Super GT is available to 25 buyers with a starting price of $594,122. (based on 3/3/11 conversion rates)

Safety is another area where the Carlsson C25 Royale fulfils highest standards. This is due to the crash structure which is the same as in the basis model and guarantees maximal protection for the passengers. Also, the Super GT presents itself extremely easy to service. All workshop of the worldwide Mercedes-Benz service network can service the C25 Royale.

The C25 Royale presents itself as a counter-design to the electro hype. More than 40 electric motors are used in the C25 Royale as well – but underneath the bonnet you’ll find a traditional 12-cylinder engine, whose 753 hp ensure not only power but also thunderous drive. The purified exhaust gases make an impressive sound as they exit through the four diamond-shaped tailpipes into the open air. The breathtaking power pushes the driver into the ergonomically shaped seats, which have a massage function and a ventilation system to ensure greater comfort on long journeys. In addition, the transmission tunnel, incorporating all the important control functions, is headed towards the driver, allowing him to give his full attention to the road ahead. Because in the C25 Royale, the journey is its own reward.

Carlsson has realised more than 70 innovations in the new C25 Royale. The car’s handling in particular is better than ever before. Plus, compared to the basis model Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG, the C25 Royale is 180 kilogram lighter which is due largely to the complete real carbon exterior. This not only reduces the overall weight of the Super GT, it also effectively lowers the car’s centre of gravity and allows more dynamic cornering ability and more agile handling as Carlsson has revised the vehicle’s entire weight distribution and installed a differential lock. The full ceramic brake system reduces the weight by 50 percent and reduces the unsprung mass for a more dynamic handling. The generously designed ceramic brake discs and the solid aluminium callipers allows later braking coming into bends while the revised electronics guarantee improved response, giving greater dynamism when coming off bends.

The C25 Royale’s outstanding performance data is impressive too. The strikingly beautiful sports coupé with the V12 biturbo engine achieves 753 hp (554 kW) and maximum torque of 1320 Newton metres (which is limited electronically to 1150 Newton metres). This allows the Super GT to race from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.7 seconds and to achieve a maximum speed of 352 kph.

Only one C25 per country guarantees the utmost in exclusivity

In addition, Carlsson (which has been recognised as an independent manufacturer for some years now by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority Kraftfahrtbundesamt) can offer one excellent unique selling point: Not more than 25 specimens of the C25 Royale are being made. And, to enhance the exclusivity of this ultra-limited edition still further, Carlsson is only delivering one vehicle per country. Six vehicles are already sold and will be delivered to the customers in 2011. It takes six month from order to delivery.

Each C25 Royale is absolutely unique. Colours and paint combinations can be put together as per the customer’s wishes. Similarly, the customer can decide what materials are used and what interior features their vehicle will have. Not one of the already ordered vehicles is alike the other ones.

Maximum performance combined with everyday comfort for the first time

The Carlsson C25 Royale is not just an exclusive vehicle with outstanding performance data. The engineers at Gut Wiesenhof, Carlsson’s headquarters in Germany, are the ones in the world to bring together the performance data of a super car with everyday practicality. “There are more than enough super cars around that can only be driven safely on a racing track”, says engineer Markus Schuster, Managing Director at Carlsson. “We deliberately wanted to develop a car that is exclusive on the one hand but can still be used for the daily commute to the office. A Super GT which can go from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.7 seconds while at the same time offering the utmost in ride comfort.”

In particular, the intelligent C-Tronic® SUSPENSION developed by Carlsson guarantees excellent ride comfort. This system measures a whole range of parameters, like the spring rate, on a continuous basis, which allows it to detect the road conditions and the driving style. Where road conditions are poor, the C-Tronic® raises the residual spring travel, thereby providing optimal ride comfort. As soon as the surface conditions have improved, the system will lower the entire suspension completely automatically and achieve perfect cornering dynamics.

Emotions instead of sacrifice

The twelve-cylinder reflects the company’s performance capacity and competence. Carlsson emphasises on first-class engineering instead of immature technology, on daily suitability instead of utopian scenarios, on emotions instead of sacrifice.

With the C25 Royale, Carlsson has gone one step further on the road to developing a completely new class of vehicle. No other car manages to combine excellent driving performance, unique design, perfect everyday practicality and the utmost in exclusivity.

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Receives Tuning Kit from MR Car Design

German Car Tuner, MR Car Design, tunes the 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG dubbing it the "Shining Star"

German Car Tuner, MR Car Design, took a short trip back in time and revisited the popular 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. The MR Car Design SL-Class, with updates to the exterior, interior and engine was given the name “Shining Star”.

Updates to the exterior of the 2005 SL include a new Mercedes SLR inspired carbon hood from fellow German Tuner, Kicherer. An updated rear bumper, taken from the facelifted AMG model, with black fender lights and mid-mounted rear brake lights also in black round out the exterior updates.

Powering the MR Car Design’s SL65 AMG is a slightly tweaked ECU, adding 80 hp and 110 Nm of torque to the standard output of the AMG’s 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 output  All achieved through the use of a new air intake, a custom sports exhaust and an ECU remap.

The electronic speed limiter that stopped your enjoyment at a mere 155 mph (250 km/h) has been removed and a lowered suspension has been installed that brings the car 30 mm closer to the road.

The Tuned SL65 AMG rides on 20-inch forged rims by Carlsson and offers custom-made Black Series dial lenses.

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Tuned by MKB

Swabian engineers of the technology tuning company MKB add 345 hp to the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 Black Series

The highest commitment of MKB´s high performance engineering. Mercedes tuner MKB offers for the most powerful AMG supercar another 345 horsepower. The standard 670 hp are turned into 1,015 hp by the Swabian engineers of the technology tuning company MKB. The engine´s torque is limited to 1.300 Nm.

Before any lucky owner can turn the key of his SL 65 Black Series with the MKB P 1000 power train the car has to undergo an enormous engine conversion.

The new engine conversion for the most powerful AMG engine demanded the long term experience of the whole engineering team at MKB. The engineer’s basis is well known. Many AMG 65 owners trust MKB performance tuning and so they reach regularly speeds with their luxury coupes and luxury sedans on the Autobahn, speeds at which modern jet fighters had retracted their landing gear already.

The club sports AMG SL 65 Black Series plays a new role in the AMG product range but it must not step out of the classic power performance line at MKB. “Our main goal with the new engine MKB P 1000 isn´t a new one. We simply want to give back the top speed performance to this SL with its high downforceaerosetting. It should be v-max capable just like our other top speed efficient cars. And for this we need more than 800 engine horsepower,” points out MKB CEO Panagiotis Avramidis. But even 900 hp are not enough when you are holding the technological key for over 1.000 hp.

In fact the idea behind the SL Black Series is a whole new concept at AMG. The new high performance in both longitudinal and lateral acceleration showed a new principle. A principle that reduces the v-max for a better race track experience. But at MKB the typical AMG club sports pilot is well known so one thing is clear to the MKB engineers: Especially the longitudinal acceleration must not stop to soon and the most merciless push out of any corner reduces the lap time most easily.

So the MKB engine modification is in its depths is absolute outstanding compared to any other tuned 12- cylinder AMG engine. If costs are neglect able then one can work on the power plant with a greater creativity – inside and outside. The MKB package for the AMG SL Black Series covers the whole drive train and offers the demanded reliability for high speed trials at Nardo or several hot laps on the Nürburgring in succession.

The engine conversion MKB P 1000. A new philosophy. The focus on turbo charging. For the Swabian enterprise MKB and most respected technology tuner for Mercedes and AMG cars the work on high performance power trains is business as usual. Decent exterior design, refinement in the interior but magnificent thrust under the bonnet adjusted brakes and wheels are the MKB key visual in the market.

But this MKB P 1000 marks MKB´s step into the future. Even the name shows it clearly. And in Swabian decency it underrates the performance slightly. The new MKB style is the adaption to the vehicle basis: the Mercedes performance product range will be based upon turbocharged engines in the near future. MKB demonstrates with the MKB P 1000 and its over 1.000 hp output the ultimate technology leadership in that business branch.

The 6.0 litre AMG V12 gets in the MKB P 1000 conversion a completely new engine periphery – this means air intakes, turbo charger systems, cooling systems are the visible means. Inside MKB works as consequent too. Apart from MKB camshafts the power ECU has the important job to control the flowing gases in a way that maximum power output, drivability and sustainability will be combined on a high level. The engine pushes significantly forward from 1.500 rpm onwards. Anything like a turbo lag is unknown. The automatic gearbox is converted too to meet the increased engine torque.

Additionally MKB offers MBK LSD rear axles with different ratios to reach different end speeds.

The roll-out was in direct competition

MKB technicians demonstrated their full confidence as they made the first roll out at Hockenheim during the international drag race. In front of 8.000 spectators and an astonished announcer the AMG Black series with its MKB P 1000 won his two shoot outs versus specialized drag racing US muscle cars. “To race the ¼ mile was new to us,” tells Panagiotis Avramidis, “and this car had a final drive good for a theoretical 370 km/h. So the car runs only in the first two gears on the drag strip. And as we told the professional competitors that we must use the normal high street tire pressure for safety reasons we have been laughed at. But in the end it turned out it was not so bad for us.”

The first presented Version will use the final drive ratio for 370 km/h at 5.700 rpm. The MKB v-max is not measured yet. The testing at Nardo or Papenburg oval course will be held soon. The car should be fun to drive not only on the motorway so the engine kept its place low above the front axle. The standard room in the engine compartment of the SL and other Mercedes cars were kept in mind when developing the turbo charging banks and the air intake ducts. The original looks of the car – even when the drive train is massively converted – means a lot to the typical MKB customer.

Unchanged at the exterior but with a performance far beyond of most super cars and still with the typical Mercedes comfort to reach any High-speed Event without bruises or a stiff neck. With this sentence one can describe the result after a MKB P 1000 conversion of any AMG SL Black Series best. All in all the MKB P 1000 is spot on with his basis in regards of everyday use but it speeds ahead easily if necessary. MKB offers this conversion as a custom hand built car in the MKB workshop. There is no production number limit for the engine. After the launch with the AMG SL Black Series all other AMG 65 cars can reach over 1.000 hp at the real wheels. The total cost for the engine tuning is 116.800.- EURO in Germany including 19 % VAT. As this tuning can be only done at MKB and takes a lot of efforts the conversion time will take up to 3 month.

Data:

  • Engine MKB P 1000 in the AMG SL Black Series
  • Basis: AMG 65. 6,0 Liter V12 3V
  • Power in PS / kW at RPM: 1.015 / 746 at 5.700
  • Torque in Nm at RPM: 1.300 at 3.300 to 6.000
  • Track Performance:
  • 0-100 km/h: 3,6 s
  • 0-200 km/h: 8,9 s
  • 0-300 km/h: 21,5 s
  • ¼ mile: 11,1 s
  • Vmax: not measured yet

MKB means unrestricted acceleration.

MKB vehicles are developed and constructed using state-of-the-art technologies. Instead of sacrificing potential to the emotionless cost-savings measures used for mass-produced cars, MKB unleashes that potential and pushes it to the limit with additional MKB technology. At MKB, the main focus is not on maximizing profits. It’s on the sheer joy of enjoying the full potential of modern automobiles – together with our passionate customers. Optimize the complete drive train – the engine, transmission and differential – is the focus of everything MKB does. Every MKB product comes from a constant, passionate drive to achieve maximum power, and from the search for the ideal technical solution.

TBT: RENNtech Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series

RENNtech is the latest tuner to enhance the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, and the results break the 800 hp barrier

A while back, we told you about BRABUS and their work creating the Vanish Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series – a model that noted a power boost of 130 hp over the factory output and as a result, sat pretty at the 800 hp mark.  Not to be outdone, RENNtech just sent us details of their tuned version of the SL65 AMG Black Series, which takes the already consummate model and boosts output to… wait for it… 805 horsepower.  That’s 5 horsepower more than the BRABUS, allowing those in the RENNtech camp to sit smugly back and gloat in the fact that their tuning package is clearly superior to their competitors.  Making the magic happen is RENNtech’s SL65 Black Series Performance Package 1, which includes ECU/TCU tuning, a dual intercooler pump upgrade and sport mufflers.  Pricing starts at $16,390, while a RENNtech transmission upgrade and limited slip differential are optional extras to compliment the newfound power at your disposal.

Before I start getting hate mail from BRABUS owners, let me make it clear that I wasn’t being serious above.  I’m not recommending RENNtech over BRABUS or vice versa – 800 horsepower or 805 horsepower, both are going to be one hell of a ride, and you really can’t go wrong with anything that’s got 800 plus horses under its hood.  To see more of the RENNtech Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, check out more pics in the gallery.

Update:

RENNTECH has teamed up with Domani Motors to create a show stopping SL65 AMG Black Series.  Since the release of RENNTECHs Performance Package 1 for the Black Series, it has created quite the buzz within the international tuning market.  Domani Motors hired on RENNTECH to outfit their pearl white Black Series, which now modded produces a staggering 805 HP and 1000 LB-FT of torque at the crank.

RENNTECH’S performance Package 1  for the Black Series includes ECU/TCU tuning, Dual Intercooler Pump Upgrade, and RENNTECH Sport Exhaust.  This particular vehicle was also equipped with a Transmission Upgrade and 100% Locking Rear Differential from RENNTECH.  The RENNtech differential is based on OS Giken’s line of Super-Lock LSD which functions as a traditional open differential in low and normal-load situations, transforming smoothly and gradually up to 100% full lock as loads rise. The Super-Lock LSDs clutch packs make the unit incredibly quiet and smooth, without the kind of chatter usually associated with limited-slip cars.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Receives Black Series Kit from TC-Concepts

TC-Concepts introduces a 690 horsepower Black Series tuning package for the Mercedes SL65 AMG roadster

The Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series is an unquestionably beautiful car.  Unfortunately, as part of its extensive list of performance enhancements, it loses one of the SL’s family’s most desirable features:  the folding roof.  Attempting to bring the thrill of open air driving up to the performance (and styling) status of the Black Series, TC-Concepts has introduced a Black Series tuning package for the traditional SL65 AMG.

Outside, new styling cues include significantly wider fender flares, a new grill, modified bumpers and 20-inch ADV1 Deep Concave Series wheels, all of which bring the TC-Concepts’ SL65 AMG Black Series tuning package significantly in line with its factory direct counterpart.  As for power, the output of the SL65 AMG’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 has been bumped up to 700 PS (515 kW / 690 bhp), or 30 PS (22 kW / 30 bhp) more than the standard SL65 AMG Black Series.  The result is a 0-62 mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph.  Add to that a retractable hard top, and you’ve got yourself an open air SL remarkably close in performance to the standard SL65 Black.

BRABUS Stealth 65 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

BRABUS introduces the Stealth 65, a finely tuned Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series with an output of some 820 horsepower

First there was the BRABUS VANISH – a finely tuned 800 horsepower monster born of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series created by German Mercedes super tuner BRABUS.  Never one to rest on their laurels, BRABUS went back to work, creating a second model based on the SL65 AMG Black Series they’re calling the BRABUS Stealth.  This time, power has been bumped from the standard SL65 AMG Black’s 670 PS (493 kW / 661 bhp) up to an even more incredible 820 PS (603 kW / 809 bhp) and 1420 Nm (1047 lb-ft) of torque – this compared to Vanish’s 800 PS (588 kW / 789 bhp).  0-62 mph times are likely equal to that of the Vanish (3.6 seconds), while top speed checks in at over 206 mph.

Creating the consummate power supply, the BRABUS T65 RS performance kit was again put to work, which includes two enhanced turbochargers, a new intercooler with 4 water/air heat-exchangers, an additional radiator, three electric high performance coolant pumps, a dynamic pressure lowering metal catalytic converter and BRABUS’ software programming for the engine ECU.  The result is a one-off SL65 AMG Black Series that at present, holds title as the most powerful BRABUS-tuned SL65 AMG Black Series in existence.

You can see a short video and photos of the BRABUS Stealth Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series immediately below.

BRABUS T65 RS Vanish Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series Official Details

Last month we brought you the first details of the BRABUS T65 RS Vanish SL65 AMG Black Series, and today BRABUS confirms the specs

As you may remember, last month we brought you the first details of the BRABUS T65 RS Vanish – the super-tuned Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series with an output of some 800 horsepower.  Today, BRABUS has officially issued the Vanish’s full specs, and while they match what we previously told you, can you really get tired reading about an 800hp SL65 AMG?  Of course not, so here again is the rundown.  Zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.  Zero to 124 mph in 9.8 seconds.  A top speed of over 206 mph, electronically limited to 200 mph.  This is the BRABUS T65 RS Vanish.

Making it happen – the BRABUS T65 RS tuning program.  A BRABUS high-tech twin turbo system that includes two special exhaust manifolds with integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers; four generously dimensioned intercoolers beneath the BRABUS carbon-fiber hood scoop; a BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts; and newly programmed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition all serve to bump power to 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW at 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), available at 2,100 rpm (peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm).

It’s a thing of beauty, and if you’ve got an extra $100,000 (approximately) to spend customizing your SL65 AMG Black Series, it’s yours.  For the full list of  BRABUS T65 RS Vanish Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series enhancements, you can find the full details in the press release below.

BRABUS T65 RS Vanish Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series Second Look

We brought you details of the BRABUS Vanish earlier this week, now we've got a more detailed look at the tuned SL65 AMG Black Series

Earlier in the week we brought you the first look at the BRABUS Vanish – a ridiculously powered Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series outputting some 800 horsepower.  At the time, we didn’t have specifics on the model other than pictures and some rough specs, but today we’ve got a far more detailed feature rundown along with some additional photos at the model.

First things first:  the all-important power numbers.  As we told you last time, output is boosted to the 800 hp mark, up from the SL65 AMG Black Series’ factory 670 hp.  Making the magic happen is the BRABUS’ T65 RS performance kit, which includes two enhanced turbochargers, a new intercooler with 4 water/air heat-exchangers, an additional radiator, three electric high performance coolant pumps, a dynamic pressure lowering metal catalytic converter and BRABUS’ software programming for the engine ECU.  The end result is a 0-62 mph time of 3.6 seconds (down from the standard SL65 AMG Black Series’ 3.8 seconds) and a top speed of about 205 mph (we’re still awaiting the official press release from BRABUS to confirm final speed figures).

Inside, leather and Alcantara add additional styling elements to the BRABUS Vanish SL65 AMG Black Series.  Also notable is the addition of red stitching, with the seats, dashboard, middle console, door panels, steering wheel and floor mats all boasting the red accents.  Other changes include the powerdome hood conversion, matte black paint and a new speedometer with a top speed of 360 km/h.

As for the BRABUS Vanish’s pricing, you’re looking at roughly EUR 42,000 for the T65 RS performance kit, EUR 8,000 for the hood and speedometer, EUR 14,500 for the interior and EUR 7,000 for the paint, bringing the rough total to EUR 71,500 (which, at the time I write this, is about $96,771).  Add to that the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series’ price of roughly $320,000, and you’ve got yourself one very fast, very expensive SL-Class.

To see more of the BRABUS T65 RS Vanish Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, you can view more photos in the gallery below.  And a special thanks to Markus Jordan for the pictures.

The BRABUS VANISH Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

The BRABUS VANISH takes the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series and bumps power output to 800 horsepower

When thinking of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, it’s only natural to think of a model that exemplifies the tuning prowess of AMG.  Straight from the factory it’s capable of hitting 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and 124 mph in 11.0 seconds before achieving a top speed of an electronically limited 198.8 mph.  For most, that’s plenty of power; but for an unknown Middle Eastern SL65 AMG Black Series owner, it was just the starting point.

He took the consummate model to BRABUS, where they worked the same tuning magic they do on every other Mercedes and applied it to the SL65 AMG Black.  The end result is a said bump in power of some 130 hp – taking the SL65 Black’s standard 670 hp to the 800 hp mark.  Larger turbos, a new gearbox, larger brake pads and an upgraded exhaust system are attributed to making it all possible.

As for the result of the power boost, BRABUS hasn’t quoted specifics, but it likely shaves a few tenths off the acceleration times while removing the speed limiter likely bumps top speed well into the 200+ mph range.  If additional details are revealed, we’ll keep you updated; in the meantime, check out more photos of the BRABUS VANISH Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series in the gallery below.

Thanks to Top Speed and PistonHeads for the photos.

Carlsson C25 Super GT Born from the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series

Based on the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, the Carlsson C25 is a 753 hp monster with a top speed of precisely 218.7 mph

With the launch of our new site we’ve been hard at work catching up on the stories we missed during our absence, and one story we felt necessary to add to to our features is a look at the Carlsson C25 Super GT – a model that celebrated its world premier at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.  If you missed it, the Carlsson C25 was conceived from the platform of the consummate Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, the race-inspired SL coupe boasting 493 kW/670 hp and a maximum torque of 1,000 newton metres directly from the factory.  Carlsson took the SL65 Black a step further, bumping output to a staggering 554kW/753 hp and 1,320 Nm torque (electronically limited to 1,150Nm).  The end result is a model capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in a mere 3.7 seconds before hitting a top speed of precisely 218.7 mph.

But the Carlsson C25 is more than just a tuned SL65 AMG Black Series, it’s design makes it a model unto its own.  Outside, both the front rear have been heavily re-worked, with a Carlsson’s trademark trapezoidal shapes featured throughout.  The headlights and taillights have both been significantly altered; there’s a new elongated front with a revised hood, front apron and grille; the rear of the vehicle boasts a far more angular shape with a radically altered exhaust design; and the contours over the rear wheel arches now flow to the back of the vehicle, as opposed to following the wheel downward (these are just some of the design changes).  Inside, stronger traces of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series remain, although Carlsson has clad the interior in a new plum color comprised of buffalo leather and ultra-suede.

Completing the package and ensuring optimum drivability, a Carlsson high performance braking system with with 405 mm large slotted race brake discs up front and 380 mm race brake discs at the rear, the Carlsson C-TRONIC SUSPENSION system and Carlsson ultra-light and forged wheels (40 percent lighter than custom light alloy wheels) all serve to help you adequately manage the abundance of power at your disposal.

If you’re interested in procuring a Carlsson C25, there’s a couple caveats.  First, Carlsson will only be delivering one C25 per country in an effort to ensure exclusivity, and secondly, Carlsson’s allotment of only 25 vehicles has already been sold out.  If you have your heart set on the C25, however, I have a feeling that if your finances match your desires, you’ll likely see one or two C25’s pop up on the second hand market in the not-too-distant future.
