Mercedes-Benz USA has reported the highest second quarter start in its history with record April sales of 26,157, a 4.4 percent increase over April 2012. Mercedes-Benz models saw a 5.8 percent gain in sales volume for a total of 23,635 vehicles sold. This brings the year-to-date totals for Mercedes-Benz to 92,822 vehicles sold. When you combine these sales with monthly sales from smart (667 vehicles sold) and Sprinter Vans (1,855 vehicles sold), MBUSA saw a year-to-date total of 101,371, a 10.2% increase over the previous year. That makes this April the earliest month ever to break 100,000 units.
“We’ve entered the second quarter of 2013 at an incredible pace,” said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of MBUSA. “A record first quarter gave us a great start. With our completely redesigned E-Class now in showrooms, I fully expect to see continued momentum in the months ahead.”

Mercedes-Benz April sales were driven by the C-Class, E-Class, and M-Class model lines. The sporty C-Class – the current gateway to the brand on the car side for younger and first-time Mercedes-Benz buyers – took the lead, posting sales of 7,338, up 14.2%. After reporting news that MBUSA was ahead of BMW in U.S. Sales, recent reports from Bloomberg have emerged that Mercedes-Benz is not in the same position on the global market. In global luxury sales, Mercedes-Benz is falling further behind rivals BMW and Audi because of a disjointed strategy in China, sluggish expansion of entry-level models and an aging S-class sedan, the once-dominant upscale nameplate remains firmly in third place.
The Mercedes sales gap with second-placed Audi has more than doubled within a year, hampering Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche’s pledge to retake the lead.

2012 Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC
“Mercedes’s problems are home-made problems,” said Christian Ludwig, an analyst with Bankhaus Lampe in Dusseldorf. “It’s going to be extremely difficult for Mercedes to reach the No. 1 spot. The others are not sleeping.”
Mercedes delivered 964,900 cars and sport-utility vehicles worldwide through the first nine months of 2012. The 5 percent gain failed to keep pace with rivals, meaning it lagged Audi by 132,600 vehicles, up from 53,900 a year ago. The gap to No. 1 BMW widened 41 percent to 145,000 vehicles, according to data from the carmakers.
In September 2011, Zetsche sought to cap the celebrations for the automaker’s 125th anniversary by setting the goal for Mercedes to become the best-selling and most profitable luxury-car brand by 2020. At the time, he said it was “impossible” for the brand to accept being third.
Profit drop
One year on, Zetsche’s tone was less jubilant. He said on Sept. 20 that earnings before interest and taxes at the Mercedes car division would fall and not match last year’s figure. In response, the manufacturer is planning a savings drive dubbed “Fit for Leadership.” At the Paris auto show last month, Zetsche didn’t reaffirm a Mercedes’s target for 2013 operating profit of 10 percent of sales.
Mercedes has been trailing since losing the top spot in the luxury-car segment to BMW in 2005. The Daimler unit’s sales will have advanced 19 percent through this year, compared with a 31 percent jump by BMW and a 70 percent surge by Audi over the past seven years, according to IHS Automotive estimates.
The failure to keep pace is reflected in the stock. Daimler’s 12 percent increase over the past 12 months trails BMW’s 18 percent gain and Audi parent Volkswagen’s 44 percent surge. Daimler trades at 7.5 times estimated earnings versus 8 times for BMW.
Zetsche is seeking to reverse the trend by adding less-expensive compact models, including a four-door coupe and a sport-utility vehicle, to attract younger buyers and by expanding the range of variants of the S-class flagship, which is in the last year of the current generation.

Dealer traffic
The new compact A-class hatchback lured 700,000 people to showrooms when it went on sale last month. The company has about 70,000 orders so far for the car, which starts at almost 24,000 euros ($31,000) compared with about 17,000 euros for the segment-leading VW Golf.
“Daimler is saying that the demand for its new A-Class is great, but these are mostly orders from dealers,” said Hans- Peter Wodniok, analyst at Fairesearch in Kronberg, Germany. “The price of the compact is quite high, and it remains to be seen if the market accepts it.”
Even with the premium price, Daimler is preparing for high demand, signing up Finland’s Valmet Automotive Inc. to produce more than 100,000 A-class cars. The external production is on top of 1.4 billion euros spent to upgrade a small-car factory in Germany and build a new one in Hungary. Daimler plans at least five compact models in the coming years including the newly introduced A- and B-class cars to take on models like the BMW 1-series coupe and the Audi Q3 SUV.

“We have holes in our portfolio that we are closing successively,” Joachim Schmidt, Mercedes’s sales chief, said in an e-mail response to questions. “When I look into the future, I see that we have excellent prerequisites to be the leading premium manufacturer by the end of the decade.”
To reach that goal, Mercedes will need to boost growth in China, where deliveries edged up 6.7 percent this year, compared with gains of more than 30 percent for BMW and Audi.
“China is definitively a problem area,” said Marc-Rene Tonn, a Hamburg-based analyst with Warburg Research. “They have to take action.”

For a start, Zetsche is combining two separate sales units — one for imported vehicles and other for locally made cars — into a single entity. Sales chief Schmidt said the goal of the restructuring is to grow “significantly” in China again. Mercedes’s efforts to expand its appeal with new models and re-spark growth in China are expected to bear fruit and offset plans by BMW to add a factory in Brazil and by Audi to expand in Mexico. IHS forecasts Mercedes increasing sales 34 percent between 2012 and 2015, compared with Audi’s 12 percent gain and BMW’s 26 percent rise.
“Globally, the relatively old product range weighs on sales,” said Frank Schwope, an analyst at Norddeutsche Landesbank in Hanover. “The current revamp of the A class and soon of the S class will have a positive effect.”

BMW AG recently reported that the car manufacturer sold 21,297 of its flagship-brand cars in the U.S. this July. The problem is, those numbers are not nearly as straightforward as they appear.
In an effort to edge out Mercedes-Benz, hundreds of BMWs were counted as sold in July, even though they remain in showroom inventories and according to dealerships are still being advertised for sale as new cars.
The reason for the strange reporting is that the company made a special offer to dealers on July 31. For only that day, dealers were able to receive discounts of up to $7,000 per 2012MY car as long as the vehicle was reported sold that day.
As The Wall Street Journal reported, the number of such deals raises questions about the accuracy of the company’s reported sales, a closely watched figure as BMW and rival Mercedes-Benz vie for the title of top-selling U.S. luxury brand.
Kenn Sparks, a BMW spokesman, said its July sales total includes vehicles that were purchased by its dealers for use as what are known as “demos”— cars used on lots for test drives.
He declined to say how many reported sales were demos, saying BMW doesn’t release the figure. “These vehicles may stay on the lot because they are used as demo models,” he said.
Car companies, which book revenue when they ship to dealers, are known for using a variety of tactics to improve sales beyond what consumers purchase, such as cut rate deals with rental-car fleets and incentive that get dealers to stock more vehicles than they need.
But piling up cars on dealer lots and offering discounts can backfire. While sales may rise for a month or two, they often fall once the effort comes to an end. Dealers call this “payback.” Discounting also can erode a car maker’s profit margins.
BMW’s incentives appeared to help propel the car maker to a 1,900-vehicle lead over Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz, which has battled BMW for the U.S. sales crown for a year and has beefed up demo sales. On Aug. 1, BMW reported July sales spiked for the vehicle types eligible for the demo discounts. It sold 1,696 of its 7 Series sedans in July, the highest monthly total so far this year, and triple the June total of 539. For the 3 Series coupe, which had demo discounts totaling $3,200, sales climbed to 2,555 cars, up from 1,222 in June and that vehicle’s highest total for the year.
Dealers said they believe a few thousand BMW vehicles were sold as demos. The auto maker reported it sold 21,297 vehicles in July compared with 19,312 for Mercedes. BMW’s Mr. Sparks said BMW doesn’t break out sales of demonstration vehicles.
Mr. Sparks said demo models should be clearly marked and sold as used cars. But managers who own or oversee more than a dozen BMW dealerships said they routinely offer the vehicles as new and that BMW’s U.S. sales unit approves of the practice.
Several managers at BMW dealerships said they had no customers lined up to buy or lease the demo cars, but reported them as sold to lock in the discounts. “If I don’t take them, then I’ll be at a disadvantage to my competitors,” one dealer executive said.
At New Century BMW in Alhambra, Calif., the retailer has “a handful” of 7 Series large sedans that were reported to BMW as sold in July, Internet salesman Justin Wong said. “They are new cars. They are not used,” he said.
“We put a few into the loaner fleet,” one of the dealership managers said. “But most we just move as quickly as we can” as new cars.
Several dealers said the demo discounts are to help clear 2012 model-year cars now that 2013 vehicles are starting to arrive. “We’re trying to make it easier for dealers to retail cars by giving a great deal to the consumer,” Mr. Sparks said.
Several dealers said if BMW’s North American region can show that its stock of 2012 vehicles is depleted, it has a better chance of convincing top BMW executives to allocate a large portion of the 2013 models now rolling off assembly lines to North America, these dealers said.
“If you don’t sell the cars in North America, they’re going to send them to China,” Mr. Wong said. “Everybody is fighting for allocation.
Geoff Day, a Mercedes spokesman, said the auto maker has included in its U.S. monthly sales reports about 500 cars that were shipped to dealers as demonstrator models in June and July combined.
Most auto makers require dealers to keep demo cars for three to six months before they can be sold to customers, a period that can vary by model. Honda Motor Co. requires dealers to keep demo models for at least six months before they can be sold to consumers, and they must be sold as used vehicles. Last year, General Motors Co. GM required Chevrolet dealers to stock at least one Volt electric car as a demonstration model and more than 1,000 were shipped as demos. But GM only counted them as sold when they were delivered to customers, a spokesman said.
In the past, GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler would lease thousands of cars a month to rental-car companies for very little. They counted those vehicles as sold. Then after a few months, the car companies took the rental cars back and passed them on to dealers that sold them as used cars.
One well known case of sales inflation occurred in 1998, when GM’s Cadillac brand and Ford’s Lincoln division racing to claim the top spot in luxury-car sales. Cadillac was trailing but its sales suddenly surged in December and it took the crown. Months later an embarrassed GM acknowledged that the Cadillac unit had purchased vehicles itself from its dealers, boosting the reported total.
Last year, BMW edged out Mercedes as the top-selling U.S. luxury car. At the end of November, Mercedes was ahead of BMW for the year. When it came time to report December sales totals, each company balked for 24 hours, hoping to force the other to go first.
Finally, Mercedes disclosed that it had sold 25,701 cars in December, and 245,192 for the year. Shortly thereafter, BMW said it had sold 26,834 cars in the month, enough to push its full-year total to 247,907 and claim the luxury-car sales crown.
Mr. Sparks said he is unaware of any discounts that were aimed at driving demo sales last December.
Dealers said BMW’s July sales total was helped by special discounts for 2012 models that the auto maker announced on the morning of July 31, the final day of the month.
Such discounts aren’t usually advertised and are known among dealers as “trunk money” and described by BMW as “allowances.”
They ranged last month from $2,500 on the 528i rear-wheel and all-wheel drive sedans to $7,000 for any 7 Series sedan, according to a memo BMW sent to dealers, a copy of which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
The discounts were available on cars that dealers reported as sold on that day, July 31. They also had to be reported or “punched” “as “Specialty Demo,” a classification in BMW’s sales reporting system that doesn’t require the dealer to enter a customer name, dealers said.
The two-page memo doesn’t state whether the cars must be sold to customers as used vehicles.

Proving itself as a popular option, sales of Sprinter vans increased an impressive 94 percent for calendar year 2011. In only its second year of operation, Daimler Vans USA and its combined network of both Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter dealers achieved a total of 16,577 vans sold, far surpassing the 2010 result of 8,559. The Mercedes-Benz network alone saw an increase of 172%.
“Our strong, diverse network of 185 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner commercial van dealers spread across the U.S. has enjoyed a banner year of Sprinter van sales. From large fleet operators to small construction businesses and mom-and-pop food trucks, American consumers are discovering the incredible benefits of Sprinter vans,” said Claus Tritt, General Manager of Commercial Vans for Mercedes-Benz USA.
Powered by a fuel-sipping 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel engine, the Sprinter has best-in-class cargo capacity of up to 547 cubic feet and payload capacity up to 5,358 pounds. With cargo doors that open a full 270 degrees, the Sprinter also boasts a rear door opening that’s 5’2″ wide and six feet tall. Both the Cargo and Passenger Vans feature a side-door opening that’s 4’3″ wide and six feet high. At the same time, their step-in height is only 19.9 inches – lowest in the industry. Interior standing height can be up to 6’6″. All versions are equipped with a number of Mercedes-Benz safety features — ESP stability and rollover control, ABS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist and traction control. The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with standard multi-stage front air bags, and side curtain and torso air bags are optionally available.
The Sprinter Van Success Story
The highly successful Mercedes-Benz Sprinter made its European debut in 1995, and a new-generation Sprinter was launched globally in 2006. Since 2001, the Sprinter has been sold in the U.S. by Freightliner, the industry’s leading manufacturer of medium and heavyduty trucks in North America. Complete with many Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features, the U.S. line-up includes the Cargo Van, Passenger Van, MiniBus, Cab Chassis and the new Crew Van. Mercedes-Benz USA began offering the Sprinter line through select Mercedes-Benz dealers in 2010. Both MBUSA and Freightliner are divisions of Daimler AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.
BlueTEC Diesel with DEF Injection
All Sprinters are powered by an innovative 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel engine that attains an impressive 24.9 miles per gallon on the highway. Marking the first-ever use of super-clean BlueTEC technology in the commercial van market, the BlueTEC diesel engine is as clean as a modern gasoline engine. A Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection system reduces nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water in a downstream catalytic converter.
2011 was a record year for Mercedes-Benz Cars, selling a total of 1,362,908 Mercedes-Benz, smart and Maybach vehicles. Just over 77,000 units more than in the previous record set in 2007 (1,285,900 units). Helping to make 2011 a record year was Mercedes-Benz USA with 264,460 vehicles sold in 2011. This was also a record for MBUSA, representing the highest annual volume on record with a 17.5% increase over the 225,007 vehicles sold during the same period in 2010.
2011 was also the best sales year in the history of the brand Mercedes-Benz. With 1,260,912 units sold and an increase of 8.0% compared to the prior year the previous sales record of 2007 (1,185,200 units) was clearly exceeded. Since the beginning of the year sales of the brand with the star have been up every month. Particularly successful was the sales development in the fourth quarter. 341,624 delivered units made it the best-selling quarter in the company’s history. In December alone, worldwide deliveries rose by 15.1% to 124,387 vehicles despite the very good result achieved already in December 2010. Thus last month, more vehicles were sold than ever before in this period.
“We’re very satisfied with our sales development. In 2011 we sold more vehicles than ever before,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We also set the course for the future: The newly introduced generation of the C-Class, the C-Class coupe, the SLK, and the CLS are extremely popular among customers. The same applies to the new B-Class and new M-Class, which were introduced in Europe only recently. The full-year 2011 was also shaped by our strong development in important growth markets such as the BRIC countries and positive development in the U.S.”
Positive outlook for 2012 – new models to provide additional momentum
The year 2012 provides a good base to pursue last year’s success. Dr. Zetsche: “In 2012 we will consequently continue our product offensive and launch additional attractive vehicles on the market, which will give us a further boost. The vehicles will be spearheaded by the new A-Class, which will allow the brand to reach out more strongly to younger target groups. The new CLS Shooting Brake will underscore our leading role when it comes to innovative vehicle concepts and design.”
The new SL will also celebrate its market launch in 2012 just in time for the model series’ 60th anniversary. After the successful introduction of the new M-Class in 2011, additional demand will be generated in the SUV segment by the new GL, the new generations of the GLK and the time-honored G-Class.
Once again sales record in China, Russia, and India; dynamic development in Brazil
Mercedes-Benz continued to do outstandingly well in China (including Hong Kong) last year, where the brand surpassed its sales record of 2010 by 30.6%. The brand therefore substantially exceeded its full-year target of increasing sales in China by at least 20%. A total of 193,339 customers opted for a vehicle bearing the Mercedes star. In December alone, 23,227 people purchased a new Mercedes-Benz passenger car (+29.5%).
Over the past twelve months, Mercedes-Benz did also well in all other BRIC countries. The previous year’s record sales were substantially exceeded in both Russia (29,058 units; +47.3%) and India (7,089 units; +22.7%). In Brazil the brand built on the dynamic development of 2010, boosting sales by 35.3% in full-year 2011, to 10,197 vehicles. Summed up, Mercedes-Benz therefore reported a sales increase of 32.4% in the BRIC-countries in 2011.
Over the past twelve months, Mercedes-Benz also saw sales rise to all-time highs among others in Taiwan (+31.7%), South Korea (+18.8%), Mexico (+17.7%), Denmark (+15.0%), and Sweden (+12.2%). The development in Japan is also notable. Despite the strong earthquake in March and the serious consequences for the country, Mercedes-Benz sold 7.1% more vehicles in Japan last year (32,405 units) than in 2010.
Outstanding development in the U.S.; record sales in Canada and the entire NAFTA region
As in 2010, Mercedes-Benz posted double-digit growth in the U.S. and grew faster than the total market. From January to December 2011, sales rose by 13.3% to 245,231 units. Thus the United States were once again the brand’s second-largest market. Driven by the new generation of the C-Class and the new M-Class, sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles rose to 25,701 units in December (+27.9%). In Canada a total of 28,584 (+1.8%) vehicles with the Mercedes star were sold during 2011. Following the record set in 2010, this result represents a new all-time high. Mercedes-Benz also achieved a record result in the entire NAFTA region in 2011, with sales amounting to 279,946 vehicles (+12.2%).
Mercedes-Benz leads Germany’s premium segment in 2011
In Germany Mercedes-Benz has been the Number One automaker in the premium segment since 1993. Despite the sometimes limited availability of the high-volume A- and B-Class due to the changeover of production to the new models, the brand’s sales in its home market totaled 262,256 vehicles in 2011, which was almost as high as in the previous year (2010: 265,000 units). In December sales of the brand with the star rose by 16.8% (25,290 units). In Western Europe (excluding Germany) deliveries also nearly matched the previous year’s level (2010: 291,853 units) at 289,285 units in the past twelve months. A sales increase was recorded among others in the UK (+10.1%).
New generation of the C-Class with outstanding customer response – sedan model leader in its segment
In 2011 the C-Class confirmed the vehicle’s standing as a very successful model also with its new generation. In the C-Class segment, Mercedes-Benz recorded growth of 16.8% over the past twelve months to 401,340 units. Very popular and once again the most successful model in its segment during the year as a whole was the C-Class sedan. A total of 270,968 units were delivered to customers (+8.1%). In the year of the facelift, deliveries of the C-Class estate rose to a new all-time high of 76,446 vehicles (+21.6%). Demand for the new C-Class coupe has also been very high ever since the vehicle was launched on the market last June. To date, 23,698 units of the sporty coupe have been delivered to customers. The SLK also did well last year, with 26,756 customers buying one of the roadsters from January through December 2011. This corresponds to an increase of 85.7%.
E-Class segment attains new record result in 2011
Following the record sales of the previous year, sales in the E-Class segment rose by 4.7% in 2011 to a new all-time high (338,386 units). Deliveries of the E-Class sedan and estate totaled 244,341 units last year (2010: 252,775 units). 32,533 customers opted to buy the CLS model, which was introduced in January 2011 (+210.4%).
Sales of S-Class sedan surpass previous year’s high level
Despite having to face much younger competitor models, the S-Class sedan once again increased sales compared to the prior year. Since the car’s market launch in 2005 more than 440,000 units of the brand’s flagship vehicle have been sold. Sales of the CL also rose, with deliveries increasing by 6.9%. The SLS AMG has also met with a great response from customers. More than 5,000 units of the super sports car have already been sold since the vehicle was launched on the market in March 2010.
At more than 200 units, sales of the high-end luxury sedan Maybach were higher than in each of the two previous years.
SUVs post monthly record sales from January through December
The SUVs from Mercedes-Benz enjoyed another great year in 2011. They achieved new sales records each month from January through December, enabling them to surpass last year’s record figure by 24.0% (248,574 units). More customers decided to buy a GLK than ever before in a single year (93,836 units; +24.0%). The compact SUV is also popular in China, where it has been produced for the local market since early December. All other model series did very well throughout the world in 2011, increasing sales substantially compared to the previous year. Sales of the R-Class rose by 45.5%, while those of the G-Class increased by 28.3%. The GL boosted sales by 28.2%, and deliveries of the M-Class increased by 17.9% despite the model changeover.
B-Class does well during phase-out
In spite of production changes resulting from the B-Class model changeover and the associated limited availability of A- and B-Class models, Mercedes-Benz sold 194,133 units in this segment last year (2010: 222,373 units). Sales of the B-Class even continued to increase until shortly before the new model was launched on the market.
Sales of smart fortwo pass 100,000 mark
The smart fortwo did extremely well in 2011. Sales passed the target of 100,000 units, rising to 101,996 vehicles (+4.6%). Dr. Dieter Zetsche: “The development of the smart fortwo last year by far exceeded our expectations. Also for 2012, all lights are on green. The third generation of the smart fortwo electric drive and the smart ebike are two genuine highlights that will be introduced in the coming twelve months. We expect them to give the brand another boost.” In full-year 2011 the innovative two-seater was especially popular in China (including Hong Kong), where a total of 11,045 buyers drove home from the dealership in a smart fortwo (2010: 3,900 units). The smart fortwo also posted very high growth rates in other countries, including Mexico (+57.1%), Poland (+50.7%), the Czech Republic (+26.6%), and Taiwan (+21.4%). In Germany the smart fortwo defended its segment leadership throughout the year, with customers buying a total of 29,005 units (+3.3%). More than 1.5 million units of the brand have been sold since the first generation of the compact urban vehicle was introduced on the market in 1998.

May 2011 was the most successful May in Mercedes-Benz history, after the company chalked up 108,766 worldwide sales thanks in part to continued growth in Brazil, Russia, India and China.
The sales figures for May 2011 marked a 7.3 per cent rise on 2010’s figure of 443,394. Total sales for 2011, which stand at 490,021, are up 10.5 per cent on 2010’s figure of 443,394 for the same period.
In a statement, the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, Joachim Schmidt, said: “The upswing we’ve experienced in recent months continued in May with a new sales record. Once again, growth was in particular driven by the BRIC countries”.
“We achieved high growth rates in all of them. The strong demand for our new C-Class generation is also contributing to our dynamic development. This will also be the case with the new C-Class coupe, which hit dealerships last Saturday and has already met with an outstanding customer response.”
The Mercedes C-Class Coupe has already won the hearts of motorists the world over who love to speed along in a top-of-the-range prestige vehicle with a sporty edge. The model’s sleek curves and ultra-modern stylings come complete with the AMG Sports Package that includes 18″ alloy wheel trims.
The C-Class was launched earlier this year and Mercedes-Benz gave their customers no less than five different engine options. Three petrol engines and two diesel engines are available with the C-Class, with the most economical being the C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, which comes equipped with the flagship ECO start/stop function and a manual six-speed transmission.
Following the significant boost provided by the C-Class, Mercedes will look to capitalise on the launch of the M-Class, which launched this week. The luxury 4×4 is expected to rival Range Rover in the market and poses a significant threat, with its spacious interior and impressive arsenal of gadgets.
The M-Class has launched with three different engine options; a four-cylinder diesel, a heavily-revised petrol V6 and a diesel V6. An eco-friendly hybrid diesel version is expected to follow, further expanding the M-Class’ reach into the 4×4 market and opening up the possibility of car insurance incentives for eco-friendly drivers.
The fact that Mercedes-Benz cited the BRIC nations as a significant contributor to their record sales figures speaks volumes about the current state of the motoring industry – and its future. For a number of years, motoring industry analysts have been pointing to Brazil, Russia, India and China as the way forward for car sales, given the lower levels of debt in those countries and the smaller proportion of cars that are bought on credit.
Indeed, China is now the world’s biggest auto market, after overtaking the USA in 2009. Car sales in China grew by 6.5 per cent between March 2010 and March 2011, signalling that the region remains a fertile ground for manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz.
