Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet

For the first time in its 48-year history, Mercedes‑Benz's sports car and high-performance brand is offering a four-seater Cabriolet in the S-Class segment

Mercedes-Benz is presenting a superlative dream car in the guise of the S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet. For the first time in its 48-year history, Mercedes‑Benz’s sports car and high-performance brand is offering a four-seater Cabriolet in the S-Class segment, adding to its product portfolio an attractive alternative for automobile enthusiasts with a penchant for performance and luxury. The new model also offers its driver and up to three passengers space to travel in style. Its high-calibre statistics: 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and peak torque of 900 Nm, AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased torque split as standard, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a high-performance composite brake system for optimum deceleration.

High-performance technology coupled with expressive exterior and interior design: It is immediately apparent that the new S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet is built by car enthusiasts for car enthusiasts. “The new S 63 Cabriolet is another fascinating AMG dream car from Affalterbach”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The new model demonstrates in impressive style that we are keeping our foot firmly on the gas in 2015. We are continuing our model initiative with a vengeance – in all market segments.”

AMG Lightweight Performance

The basis for the vehicle’s superior and dynamic character is provided by the particularly rigid bodyshell structure featuring innovative solutions such as the luggage compartment bulkhead made of magnesium.

The increase in weight which is inherent to the design of a convertible has been limited by the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, AMG light-alloy wheels produced by means of a sophisticated forging process and the weight-optimised AMG high-performance composite brake system. In addition, large parts of the shell and the front section are made of aluminium, as is the vehicle’s rear end.

AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine: superior and efficient

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines in the world. With an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and 900 Newton metres of torque, the AMG eight-cylinder engine meets the very highest standards. And the same goes for its performance: the S 63 Cabriolet accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

NEDC fuel consumption of 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres makes the two-door model the most fuel-efficient model in its competitive segment. This just goes to show that performance, efficiency and environmental compatibility need not be mutually exclusive aims.

Exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps

The S 63 Cabriolet also adapts to the driver’s individual wishes in terms of its engine sound – from emotional and sporty to a more restrained alternative suitable for long journeys. The exhaust system has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. This results in an emotional, signature AMG engine sound.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

The biturbo eight-cylinder engine of the S 63 Cabriolet is fitted by hand in the hand-finishing section of AMG’s production plant in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature also alludes to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s sports car and high-performance brand.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine. Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the two key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can configure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are three modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). The ECO start/stop function features as standard and is activated in transmission mode “C”.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

There are two variants of the S 63 Cabriolet available: with rear-wheel drive (as RHD version only) or with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive (as LHD version). The combination of S-Class Cabriolet and 4MATIC is exclusive to the AMG variant. The drive distributes 33 percent of the engine torque to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. This rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment, and improves acceleration in all driving situations, including from a standing start. The all-wheel drive also enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces.

AIRMATIC air suspension

The AMG specialists have also pulled out all the stops when it comes to the suspension: The S 63 Cabriolet comes with the AIRMATIC full-support air suspension featuring the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS, which can be preset to “Sport” or “Comfort”. At the touch of a button, the special configurations of these two programmes enable outstanding agility and dynamics or unlimited comfort on long journeys and smooth cruising at low speeds.

Specific front axle kinematics – including a higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have also been developed for the Cabriolet. The AMG-specific elastokinematics and parameterisation of the continuously variable damper control, the lower air volume of the air suspension system and the progressive piston geometry nip unpleasant rolling and pitching in the bud.

It is also possible to raise the vehicle’s level by 30 millimetres on poor surfaces. The chassis is lowered again automatically in “Sport” mode and from a speed of 120 km/h in “Controlled Efficiency” mode.

Mercedes-AMG S63 Convertible

Systematic lightweight construction: AMG forged wheels as standard

The S 63 Cabriolet is equipped with forged AMG light-alloy wheels as standard. This forged design provides for extremely strong and particularly light wheels. The resultant lower unsprung masses give rise to advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S 63 Cabriolet is fitted with multi-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish – 8.5 x 19 at the front and 9.5 x 19 at the rear, with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tyres respectively. Forged wheels are available as optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio, in size 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, fitted with tyres in size 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 respectively.

Optional AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S 63 Cabriolet, which is equipped with a weight-optimised, fade-resistant high-performance composite brake system. A ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. The design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort.

Design as an expression of sportiness and performance

The S 63 Cabriolet also boasts exciting looks to emphasise its sporty performance: The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous exquisitely designed aerodynamic elements underscore the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome. Under the radiator grille is the “A-wing”: this three-dimensional aerodynamic feature is painted in the body colour and sports the stylised “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver chrome optimises the flow of air to the cooling modules. It also makes the vehicle appear closer to the road.

A similar effect is created by the side sill panels with their high-quality, three-dimensional inserts in silver chrome. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S 63 Cabriolet exude dynamism even when it is at a standstill.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye straight away. The lower trim element in silver chrome is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the exhaust system with sports flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert.

Mercedes-AMG S63 Convertible Interior

Mercedes-AMG S63 Convertible

Interior: beguiling luxury and sporty exclusivity

Opening the door reveals the beguilingly luxurious interior of the S 63 Cabriolet: the instrument panel almost seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wrap-around design. High-quality materials and fine workmanship are combined with a sporty, exclusive design idiom. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electrical adjustment, Memory function and seat heating offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support.

The three-spoke sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim and perforated leather in the grip area allows perfect vehicle control. Aluminium shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gear and enhance dynamism. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT colour display as an instrument cluster with two animated round dials. In addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer with 330 km/h scale and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter.

World premiere in 2015 and market launch in 2016

The S 63 Cabriolet will have its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. It will go on sale in December, and the market launch will begin in the spring of 2016.

Mansory’s S63 AMG Coupe Sprints 0-62 MPH in a Mere 3.3 Seconds

Mansory has developed an under-bonnet package which lifts output to an incredible 662kW of power and an insane 1300Nm of torque

Are you after a bit more performance from your stunning new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG Coupe? We didn’t think so. But in case you are, car design specialist Mansory has come up with just the answer.

The S 63 AMG Coupe is hardly a slouch in factory form, with its 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 belting out 430kW and 900Nm. However, if this level of performance is well under your threshold, it’s good to know there is a solution.

Mansory has developed an under-bonnet package which lifts output to an incredible 662kW of power and an insane 1300Nm of torque. Maximum torque is actually electronically limited to give the transmission – and tyres – bonus life credits.

If that’s too much, the firm also offers a 530kW and 1100Nm tune. The extra oomph comes via the installation of new, stronger conrods, a special crankshaft, custom manifolds, and larger turbochargers. Some other components are also replaced by Mansory as well.

Thanks to these changes in engine character, the S 63 AMG can cover 0-100km/h in just 3.3 seconds. If you keep it nailed, if you have the courage, the sleek coupe will keep soaring until the 300km/h speed limiter is hit.

Lastly, a Mansory package wouldn’t be complete without a flamboyant bodykit. So there is a full carbon fibre styling package available. It adds unique spoilers to the front and rear, big alloy wheels, and various trimming changes for the interior. It’s just the vehicle for your nightly cruise.

See Why AutoWeek Editors Love The S63 AMG

Possibly the finest luxury car in the world

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic is without question one of the best cars in the world, and that is just based on its stats.  So, what to people who have driven the S63 AMG really think?  The editors over at AutoWeek put together their thoughts on the powerful sedan and we couldn’t help but share.

2014 Mercedes S63 AMG badge

2014 Mercedes S63 AMG

AUTOWEEK EDITOR WES RAYNAL: My goodness. Isn’t this 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic just a heck of a car? It’s about as close as I’ll get to piloting a private jet. Love it.

The S-class it’s based on is outstanding, so upgrading to the AMG model isn’t necessarily a must, but for that extra oomph, well sure, why not?

I just love cruising around town in this baby. In eco mode and suspension set on comfort, there’s stop/start and a nice, comfortable and coddling ride.

What’s that you say? How’s the power? Well, the AMG badge means it’s a real athlete when you want it to be. In sport mode, the V8’s power flings the car to 60 mph in about three and a half seconds, plenty quick enough for anyone. Midrange speed and power, say 35-80 mph, is even more impressive than 0-60 — that’s where the car really feels like a missile. Sport mode also stiffens the suspension and steering, cutting body roll and making the car feel a heck of a lot more sporting than you’d guess of a 4,800-pound car. It’s terrific to drive either fast or slow.

The interior is a knockout in terms of material quality and fit and finish. It’s also handsome and fairly intuitive once you learn your way around in there.

Anybody notice that in the first half of 2014, the S-class is blowing away the other big luxury cars? And I mean curb stompin’ them. The Benz outsold the BMW 7-series by about 6,500 cars and the Lexus LS by almost 7,200. Don’t even get me started on the Porsche Panamera…

Drive an S-class and you’ll see why — being all new no doubt helps. Here we have one of the few six-figure cars I say is worth the money.

AUTOWEEK WEST COAST EDITOR MARK VAUGHN: Think of this as an S-class sedan that is more acceptable to Autoweek readers. Most Autoweek readers and staffers (the two have surprisingly similar tastes) might not choose an S-class as their primary sedan. But many could be happy with this 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic.

What’s different about the AMG version of the S-class? Most of the power and the componentry that help with driving feel are new or revised on the AMG version. It’s as much as 220 pounds lighter thanks to a number of simple changes, from a carbon fiber well for the spare tire to forged alloy wheels and a lighter battery. AMG tossed the stock powerplant and swapped in a direct-injected AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbo that makes a meaty 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. The AMG adaptive sports suspension has new bushings all around, as well as higher camber settings, larger anti-roll bars and a stiffer rear-subframe carrier. So it feels better-connected to the road and more responsive to your inputs. The 4Matic permanent full-time all-wheel-drive (required to sell these in the northeastern U.S.) sends 67 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels and 33 percent to the front, the latter via a simple power-takeoff gear at the rear of the seven-speed MCT transmission.

Mercedes claims a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds, which is extraordinary, considering the S63 AMG weighs close to 5,000 pounds. I weighed it at a recycling plant’s scales and got 4,988 pounds with a gallon or so shy of a full tank of fuel. So let’s say it’s an even 5 large. At the car’s introduction last year in Austria, I got a 4.3-second 0-60… in the rain. It is not weak sauce, this car. It is spicy Stuttgart currywurst of the type you buy at trailers parked illegally in autobahn rest stops.

It’s a perfectly fine long-distance cruiser. I drove four people 339 miles while I had it to go watch a rocket launch at Vandenberg AFB. Everybody loved the car’s features, especially, oddly enough, the headrests. They all loved the headrests. Who even notices headrests? The headrests are just one of about 3 million things that aren’t changed by AMG. So even in this AMG-tuned version, you get the coddling comfort of Mercedes’ most luxurious sedan.

However, a few days’ living with this car brings out a few fundamental irritants carried over from the S-class:

The trunk is way too small for a car this large. We still got all our gear into it, but I expected a lot more room.

Visibility — just plain old looking outside so you can see where you’re going, whether it’s safe to change lanes or when trying to park — is a lot less than I would have expected and makes maneuvering this behemoth all the more difficult. Wide roof pillars in conjunction with those ginormous headrests reduce your lines of sight.

OMG, all those gauges and adjustments that make this the most complicated car to live with in the world are still driving me crazy after 20-something years. Mercedes better have a hell of a customer training program to get buyers out the showroom floor with any understanding of the “Colossus: The Forbin Project” that is the gauge cluster and dash info settings. There was no owner’s manual in the test car to help figure it out. All this stuff would be a deal breaker for me, but maybe it didn’t bother anyone else, like anyone younger than my age of 142.

The parking brake doesn’t like to let go; it clings to the discs as you start off. The old Subaru Hillholder clutch was smoother than this thing.

The AMG high-performance two-piece brake system squeaked at very low speeds.

Everything beeped way too much. (I should be sitting on my front porch in a rocking chair yelling all this to the house plants.)

There will be those who have to buy an S-class because their spouses tell them that’s what they want. For them, and for their driving virility, AMG offers this. Get the AMG version, don’t tell the spouse that’s what you got, and go have fun.

AUTOWEEK ASSOCIATE WEST COAST EDITOR BLAKE Z. RONG: The Mercedes-Benz S-class has always been the rising tide that carries all metaphorical ships, the technological bridge between what’s dazzling right now in the automotive sphere — and what will be found, worn and fritzing, in a used Toyota Corolla 10 years from now.

Here are some things from the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC that deserve to filter down to the 2024 Corolla. A clock from IWC Schaffhausen. A genuine metal rotary knob with audible clicking that’s reminiscent of the intro to Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher.” Flowing designo Brown Sunburst Myrtle Wood that comes as an $800 option. Night vision on the dash and a forward camera in the massive 12.3-inch screen, ensuring that a windshield is all but a nuisance. The oft-mentioned air freshener system offers three modes of scents. The four circular vents in the middle blow “focused,” “diffused,” or “medium” air; I couldn’t tell the difference. The Corolla of the future deserves $6,400 Burmester 3D surround sound — gorgeous in design, impressive but never mind-blowing — with door-mounted tweeters gently that rotate outwards when the car is turned on and back down when you’re done listening to Paul Harvey monologues in the driveway.

How about front seats that are not only heated and cooled, but the armrests and center console are heated? The front seats offer six massaging functions — they now get the shoulders, finally — as well as bolsters that inflate around corners, an AMG staple: gimmicky at first, you never realize how useful those are until you try ’em. (Alas, my girlfriend thought they felt “creepy.”) How about genuine suede pillows in the rear seats, as magnificently soft as the snowfall on a baby goose? Why bother driving, anyway? Why not just live in the back in your very own first-class pod, surrounded by all the items of your earthly entertainment? “This is nicer than any furniture I’ve ever owned,” said at least three of my friends, one of whom kept referring to the “Budweiser” sound system. We turned the car on and off dozens of times so he could gawk at the speakers turning in and out.

For the man who buys the best, so it goes, he deserves everything. And everything includes the aforementioned and a 577-hp, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a whopping 664 lb-ft of torque, with exhaust note sounds that are smooth, muted; a veiled aggression from beyond, it will flatten distances with ease and quietness until the collision warning system beeps at you with an enraged tone.

With the impressive power levels these days, 4Matic seems to be the only way to get an S63 around a hairpin. The luxobarge will handle a fevered twisting road if you ask it politely, but it will always finish its reply with, “…but, hey, just so you know, I weigh 4,806 pounds. Why are we doing this again?” It’s heavy, but it is composed enough to carry its weight well — like throwing a cinderblock through a window, instead of a sack of potatoes. The S63 AMG will hustle with a bit of initial understeer and an addictive burst of power on the way out. But the throttle is slow to react, and the car’s bulk limits the addictiveness of sliding out of corners, and the entire exercise ultimately feels silly and undignified: a car this big, with a motor this big, should be limited to launch controls and impressing friends and neighbors at on-ramps.

So, handling isn’t its strong suit. Best, then, to reserve it for the inevitable stoplight posturing, pointing that three-star ornament towards the horizon and riding that wave of torque past the shock and awe of any sports car driver south of a Lamborghini Aventador…

The throttle is German-levels of heaviness, like most AMG cars, come to think of it. But the brakes are perfectly tuned to the car: I compared this with the Porsche Macan I recently drove, and AMG definitely knew more what they were doing. The suspension offers little difference between sport and comfort, and could use a little more rebound damping. It does have a lot of car to suspend.

But AMG is good at making large cars hustle. If the E63 AMG feels like a smaller car, and the C63 is so tail-happy, then the Big Daddy S63…well, it never feels smaller, but equally capable of supercar feats.

This is the finest luxury car in the world. It always has been, really. Dictators and presidents and dictators who label themselves as presidents have always chosen the S-class for their dignified functions. Why not a Bentley Mulsanne? Why not a Rolls-Royce Phantom? Because those are far too crass, too silly in comparison — they resemble a poor man’s caricature of a rich man’s car, what Montgomery Burns or the guy from the Monopoly box would drive. The S-class never screams “I HAVE MONEY” to the peasants; it is much more dignified, much more subtle. If anything, it whispers it in an aristocratic accent that speaks of chumminess and menace at the same time: as for my means, old sport, that’s a rather gauche subject matter.

True power lies with the satisfaction of knowing that the moneyed can blow the lugs off damn near anything short of an Aventador, and even if they lose, they can still get a hot shoulder massage while doing so. In fact, flagship Benz owners have been doing just so since the 300SEL 6.3. Massaging seats or not.

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe World Premiere

The new S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range

The new S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range. Exciting lines underpin this two- door model’s design. Power and sensual purity combine to give the vehicle irresistible presence and breathtaking performance. Equally impressive is the combination of outstanding driving dynamics, advanced lightweight construction and groundbreaking efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine is a paragon of poise and assurance. Boasting an output of 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the S63 AMG Coupe delivers exceptional performance with remarkably low fuel consumption. In addition, AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive (33/67% split) will come standard in the U.S. market for optimum traction in any driving situation.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new S63 AMG Coupe is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupe also comes with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative. Mercedes-AMG is putting the pedal to the metal again in the new year. Our model initiative is set to continue at blistering pace in 2014.”

Up to 140 pounds lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight Performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight construction has reduced the vehicle weight by up to 140 pounds – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the preceding model. This weight savings was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight improves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio results in impressive performance: the S63 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, the AMG eight- cylinder unit meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 41 hp and torque by 74 lb-ft. Yet the S63 AMG Coupe still consumes less fuel.

Mercedes S63 AMG Puts Jaguar XJR to Shame

In a head-to-head matchup between the Mercedes S63 AMG and the Jaguar XJR, there can only be one winner

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury car but secretly want a car that can take nearly any other car off the line, the Mercedes S63 AMG is the car for you.  But other brands have come out with their own version of luxury sport saloon, including Jaguar with the XJR.

Both cars offer the luxury and space of a fine limousine with supercar power that comes from a V8 and providing over 525bhp. With 577bhp and 900Nm of torque, the twin-turbo Mercedes already has a more powerful engine than the 542bhp supercharged XJR. But  the Jaguar is the lighter of the two.

Putting the two luxury sports saloons to the test, they were pitted them against each other in a head-to-head matchup.

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Spied

The 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe was spied looking better than ever

If the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is considered to be the “best car in the world” then the 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG may be the “coolest car in the world”.  It has everything you could ask for in a luxury sports car, aerodynamic design, power, unrivaled interior and technology that is more at home on a space shuttle than a car.

The S63 AMG Coupe is slated to replace the outgoing CL 63 AMG, making its debut in 2014. It’s power will come from an engine similar to the 5.5-liter V8 in the W222, which would bring it in around 595 PS and 900 Nm of torque. In terms of speed, it would mean a 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds with rear-wheel drive and 3.9 seconds with 4Matic.  Times that are going to be hard to match by any similar four-wheel drive cars.

Check out the gallery below for a 360 degree look at the future’s “coolest car in the world”

Mercedes-Benz reporter heads to the Austrian Alps to test out the all-new 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG

There’s not much about the 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG that hasn’t been said – they took what was already being called the “world’s best car” and made it better.  How?  Mercedes gave it an AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine that outputs 577 HP and 664 lb-ft of torque, changed out some of the interior and exterior features for a more sporty look, and ultimately took one of the most luxurious cars ever produced and made it feel like a 4,400 pound race car.

Mercedes-Benz Dropping the Twin-Turbo V8 5.5 Liter

Reports have surfaced that Mercedes-Benz will drop the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter after the current-generation S63 AMG

A few days ago, we told you about the demise of the SLS in order to make way for its successor codenamed C190.  In case you missed it, according to our good friends in Germany, Mercedes-Benz will stop production of all SLS models in the first half of 2014.

Today, reports have surfaced that Mercedes-Benz will drop the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter after the current-generation S63 AMG.  Not nearly as dramatic an announcement as the dropping of an entire model line but we still had to ask why.

For those unfamiliar, inside the 2014 S 63 AMG is the M157 is a Euro 6-compliant twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter gasoline engine that is capable of producing 585 bhp (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft).  AMG chief Tobias Moers revealed that the mill cannot receive a power hike without a negative impact on its reliability.  He did not offer up any information on whether or not other S-Class models would receive this engine as well but it is more than likely that the recently revealed S-Class coupe and the convertible will also receive it.

We will keep you posted as additional information is revealed.

2014 S 63 AMG On Display in Frankfurt

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon and most dynamic S-Class ever. At the heart of the new S63 AMG is the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.

And, according to Dr. Schmidt: “Concerns about the environment are not an issue at all. The 5.5-litre V8 biturbo has more power but consumes around one litre less than its predecessor.”  Through systematic lightweight design, the S 63 AMG weighs in at up to 100 kilogrammes less than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is 10.1 to 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The new S 63 AMG is also optionally available for the first time with the performance-oriented AMG 4-MATIC all-wheel drive.

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 220 pounds lighter than before

Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG 4MATIC by up to 220 pounds compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance two-piece brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further 9 pounds. The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly
superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 577 hp and a torque of 664 lb-ft, the AMG eight-cylinder motor from the M157 engine family outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is lower than its predecessor, even though the engine output has been increased by 49 hp.

Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine:

  • Direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors
  • Twin turbocharging
  • All-aluminum crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO Start/Stop function

AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logic controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and
“M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Engine production at AMG

Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is assembled by hand at AMG, observing the highest levels of craftsmanship. Highly qualified engine builders assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine builder’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 pounds

Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 pounds. The high-performance battery is relatively resilient in cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S63 AMG 4MATIC is the world’s first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented “C” mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission
characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear, for ensured comfort and efficiency.

In the “S” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO Start/Stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high-performance driving dynamics and enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces (winter tires are required for winter conditions). Optimum traction is provided by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which exploits the maximum friction connection potential of all four wheels.

The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft
is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 154 pounds, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. The vectoring of torque helps reduce understeer when turning into corners.

AIRMATIC Suspension

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG ADAPTIVE sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface
conditions. “Comfort” and “Sport” suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimize the vehicle’s agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

The S63 AMG 4MATIC is available with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels – size 8.5×19 at the front and 9.5×19 at the rear with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tires respectively.

Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, with size 8.5×20 at the front and 9.5×20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, removeable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport.

AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece brake system as an option for the first time

Extremely short stopping distances and immediate deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance two-piece brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance twopiece brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20
percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the “AMG
Carbon Ceramic” logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.

Design: Confidence and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms

Powerful and exclusive, dramatic and prestigious – the new S63 AMG 4MATIC also makes a visual impression. The high-performance sedan’s design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasizes the exclusivity and power of the S63 AMG 4MATIC. Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling
modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The threedimensional front splitter in silver shadow reduces lift.

Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create an aggressive flow along the side with the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line”. Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG highperformance brake system. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front fenders identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the “S63 AMG” model designation on the trunk lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver shadow and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with internal dynamic exhaust flaps.

2014 Mercedes S63 AMG Interior

2014 Mercedes S63 AMG Interior

Interior: eye-catching appointments, design and quality

Like the exterior design, the S63 AMG 4MATIC interior is a sophisticated combination of the athletic atmosphere of a true AMG automobile with classic Mercedes values such as improved interior dimensions, new control logic, new ergonomic touches, ease of use, safety, appeal and aesthetics. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electric adjustment, Memory function and
seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with lavish perforations and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front center console and the high-quality analog clock in IWC design, which for
the first time features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and metal appliqués on the dial.

The AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminum shift paddles allows perfect vehicle control. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the highresolution TFT color display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials: in addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG logo in the speedometer with 200 mph scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

Selecting “Warm up” in the AMG main menu brings up two round dials indicating the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures. Vehicle configuration, for example activation of a certain transmission and suspension mode, is manipulated through the AMG main menu “Setup” by means of buttons on the center console. An S63 AMG 4MATIC pictogram on the TFT display between the speedo and rev counter gives the driver visual feedback. The upper section of the display contains a permanent gear indicator and, when manual transmission mode “M” is selected, also an upshift recommendation. At the lower edge, the activated transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the suspension set-up are displayed.

2014 Mercedes S-Class by Brabus

German super tuner Brabus transforms the 2014 S-Class into one of the world's fastest luxury sedans

German tuning extraordinaire Brabus has just unveiled their first tuning package for the 2014 S-Class. They’re the first tuner to offer up a power package for the flagship Mercedes, and as usual they don’t dissappoint.

Offering two power packages – one for the S500 and one for the already monsterous S63 AMG – Brabus proved that they can make the best even better.

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Brabus B50 (S500) receives a HP boost from its standard 450 HP to an impressive 520 HP – nearly that of the standard S63 AMG. This addition of horsepower and modifications allows Brabus’ version of the S500 to spring from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.2 seconds with a top speed that can be set at 155, 168 or 186 mph.

As for what Brabus had up their sleeves for the Mercedes S63 AMG, Brabus decided on two power upgrades. There’s the Brabus B63 that outputs 650 HP and 1,000 Nm of toque, two figures that are without question impressive, to say the least.  As if that weren’t enough, the second power upgrade (known as the Brabus B73) takes power a step further, upping output to a mind bending 730 hp (yes, I did say 730 HP) along with 1,065 Nm of torque. Both S63 AMG cars with the Brabus power upgrades can reach its electronically limited 202 mph with ease.

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-ClassBrabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Brabus Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Brabus didn’t stop at the engine though, adding additional modifications to the interior and exterior of the 2014 S-Class. Add-ons like a tweaked ABC system with 15mm lowered ride height; 19, 20, or 21-inch Brabus wheels that come in different designs options and colors; a Brabus styling kit; and of course a luxurious interior package with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber are all on the menu.

After spy photos, leaks and teaser photos and videos, Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the all-new 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC. The most powerful high-performance sedan in the luxury segment.  Like it’s non-AMG counterpart, the S63 AMG sets new standards in terms of driving dynamics, lightweight construction and efficiency.

The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine – the most powerful member of the M157 engine family, with an output of 577 hp and torque of 664 lb-ft – delivers effortlessly superior performance to the 220  pound lighter model. The massive weightloss from the prior model came from the S63’s systematic lightweight construction that was based on the “AMG Lightweight Performance” philosophy.

The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly superior performance.

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logiccontrolled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Mercedes S63 AMG Sport / Comfort

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented “C” mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts.

Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan.

It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface conditions.

S63 AMG Light Alloy Wheels

S63 AMG Light Alloy Wheels

The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.

Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport.
