S-Class campaign: How the New S-Class Tames the Lion

How to tame a lion: the new S-Class with ENERGIZING comfort control. In the animal kingdom, he is undisputedly at the top of the food chain – there is no living creature that does not fear him: the lion.

The S-Class, the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz brand, has throughout its long, prestigious history always been a technological pioneer in the automotive sector. Once again, the new generation of the luxury saloon combines ground-breaking technologies with unparalleled ride comfort. The focus of the global campaign “Feel Intelligent Drive” is on the unique interaction between various comfort systems. In the driving mode, air-conditioning, fragrance, light, music and seat massage can be adapted to the current mood at the push of a button, thus increasing well-being. The video function can be activated in stand-by mode and contributes additionally to the relaxation. “ENERGIZING comfort control” is the name of the latest achievement of the S-Class. How convincing this feature is in action is shown by the film “Leon”, which will be available to view on social media from October 15. In humorous scenes, it shows how even a bad-tempered “business lion” is tamed into a gently purring kitten by the new comfort control. The ENERGIZING comfort control is available since September 2017 at the price of 238 Euro*.

“The campaign tracks the reorientation of Mercedes-Benz as a brand of “human-centered innovation” that consistently focuses on people and their needs,” says Natanael Sijanta, Head of Marketing Communications at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “No other vehicle in the luxury class is currently as intelligent as the new S-Class. With “Feel Intelligent Drive”, we show in an entertaining and humorous way how the latest, intelligent technologies perfectly match the needs of driver and front passenger.”

In the film about the new S-Class, a lion stands as a metaphor for an alpha animal from the world of business. We see the boss of a young company, who is having anything but a successful day. He suffers a series of minor mishaps that put him in an increasingly bad temper. Stressed out and in anything but a good mood, he climbs into the new S-Class at the end of a long working day. There, he experiences the effect of the ENERGIZING comfort control features. The press of a button is all it takes, the lion’s bad mood vanishes and he relaxes. He sets out on a journey through the night, at the end of which he arrives home in the best of moods. The stress of the day has vanished – thanks to the personalised wellness experience on board the S-Class.

2014 Mercedes S-Class Sets New Standards in Automotive Development

The 2014 S-Class sets the benchmark across the board in order to retain its accolade as "the best automobile in the world"

Just like past versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the new S-Class will set the benchmark for luxury vehicles across the board, retaining its well deserved accolade as “the best automobile in the world”. Already it has won two 2013 Automotive Brand Contest awards for the “Best of the Best” exterior and interior.  The new S-Class was designed three engineering priorities “Intelligent Drive”, “Efficient Technology” and “Essence of Luxury”, the new S-Class pushes the boundaries of technology on every level.

“Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.” Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars:

Perfection to the last detail results in “The Essence of Luxury”. This pursuit of the best is particularly noticeable in the interior: whether it is the seats or the air conditioning, the controls or the design, the infotainment or the comfort and safety in the rear – new ideas, their painstaking realisation, and highest perceived quality underpin the high standards that the engineers have set for the Mercedes-Benz flagship model – and for themselves.

The same applies to safety. What started with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS has now resulted in a new dimension of motoring: comfort and safety are merged into one. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as “Intelligent Drive”. A whole host of new systems makes the new S-Class even more comfortable and even safer.

The S-Class is so efficient that it almost sounds utopian: within ten years Mercedes-Benz, by realising “Efficient Technology”, has almost halved fuel consumption in the 150 kW output category to 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres, for example, while the drag coefficient of the new S-Class (cd=0.24) clearly undercuts the previous model’s figure and sets a new benchmark in this segment. The S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is set to go even lower still with a cd figure of 0.23 thanks to additional aerodynamic optimisation measures. Furthermore, the new model is the world’s first car to dispense entirely with light bulbs in favour of LEDs, pointing the way ahead once again.

Design: a modern sense of status and sensual shapes

People all over the world can recognise a Mercedes-Benz straight away. The classic Mercedes face runs like a golden thread through the brand’s history. “The sophisticated design of the S-Class has always been an expression of luxury and automotive grandeur of its era. And our new S-Class continues this tradition. With its classic architecture and flowing silhouette, it is a modern embodiment of sensual clarity. The design draws a line from the sophisticated, progressive design idiom to the classic elegance of our 1930s cars – intelligence that speaks to the emotions. Stylish sportiness and sensual forms in synthesis with timeless clarity and effortless superiority make the S-Class a true design icon,” says design chief Gorden Wagener.

To underline the effortless superiority of the new S-Class, and its ambition to lead, the radiator grille is now larger, upright and distinctly three-dimensional in design. With its long bonnet, the flowing, domed roof line and the gently slanting rear end, the new S-Class has classic saloon proportions. The size and space have been fashioned in such a way that the S-Class appears prestigious, and the powerful roof line is also in keeping with the car’s sporty coupé-style intentions.

A character line descending discreetly from front to rear – the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line” – elegantly structures the side wall and generates additional dynamism even when the car is at a standstill. The subtly created convex-concave effect of the entire flank gives rise to an extremely powerful and elongated car body that demonstrates both excitement and calm. The pronounced shoulder above the rear wheel adds further emphasis to the car’s athletic character.

The positively exaggerated surfaces and lines of the side wall on the new S-Class generate excitement as they flow into the rear end. As well as being elegant, the slightly slanting form has aerodynamic advantages. Horizontal lines running from the boot lid to the bumper emphasise the car’s width when viewed from the rear. The hallmark signature of the Mercedes-Benz designers can also be seen in the rear windscreen, which cuts into the C-pillars. The upper area of the glass is rounded, lending it a coupé-like character. The real highlights are the new-style tail lights which are completely encased by the car body and, thanks to this solitarily integrated styling and meticulously crafted inner workings, complete the design right down to the last detail.

LED technology: the first ever car without a single light bulb

100 years or so after the introduction of electric lighting in motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is now making a complete switch to LED technology – the new S-Class is the first vehicle in the world whose interior and exterior do without a single light bulb, and sees Mercedes-Benz building on its pioneering role in the lighting sector. The lighting’s multi-level functionality is another world first: out of consideration for any road users behind, the intensity of the brake lights is reduced at night or while waiting at traffic lights, for example. Almost 500 LEDs illuminate the road, the vehicle, the interior and the boot. Depending on equipment, these include:

  • Headlamps: each with up to 56 LEDs
  • Tail lights: each with up to 35 LEDs (plus 4 for the rear fog lamp)
  • Interior (including ambient lighting): approx. 300 LEDs

Visibility is enhanced by two assistance systems that have undergone some key improvements – Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Thanks to a new stereo camera and multistage radar sensors, the S-Class has 360-degree all-round vision and detects potential dangers on the road better.

Drive system: class-leading efficiency in every output category

In its first year the new S-Class line-up features two hybrid versions, a petrol model and a diesel variant: S 400 HYBRID, S 500, S 350 BlueTEC and S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID. All models boast class-leading efficiency and up to 20 percent lower fuel consumption than the outgoing model series. All the engines already meet the requirements of the Euro-6 emissions standard. In addition to this, the S 400 HYBRID and S 350 BlueTEC meet the strict criteria of efficiency class A, while the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID even has an A+ rating.

“The new S-Class achieves consumption and emissions figures that only a few years ago seemed utopian, even for executive cars,” says Prof. Thomas Weber, member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “And this is just the start of our ‘Green Leadership’ initiative: soon to be followed by the S 500 Plug-In HYBRID – the first S-Class with a fuel consumption lower than four litres per 100 kilometres.” The S-Class line-up therefore includes the full range from petrol and diesel models to petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids for the first time.

Suspension: the world’s first suspension with “eyes”

The new S-Class is the world’s first car to be able to detect bumps on the road ahead. If ROAD SURFACE SCAN detects such unevenness by means of the stereo camera, MAGIC BODY CONTROL instantaneously sets up the suspension to deal with the new situation. This innovative suspension system is available as an option for the eight-cylinder models. Standard equipment for the new S-Class includes the continuously operating Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS and an enhanced version of the full air suspension system AIRMATIC.

Interior: visual breadth and calm solidity

With its clear architecture, the interior design of the S-Class embodies a classic, superior, cutting-edge saloon. The interior’s expressive character derives from a uniquely fluid, sensuously elegant style. Horizontal elements and lines create a setting characterised by visual breadth and calm solidity. High quality and elegance harmonise with clarity and functionality: the interior design of the S-Class combines ride comfort, spaciousness and user-friendliness to the very highest standard.

The perfectly coordinated use of materials and colours produces an exclusive interior seemingly cast from a single mould. There is generous use of wood trim, especially in the dashboard and centre console. Metallised switch surfaces with pearl-effect paint finishes in three colour shades to suit the interior colour particularly highlight the outstanding quality.

Passengers in the rear are also seated in first-class – the design and exclusivity of the seats, door panels and all controls are to the same, high standard as the front. As an additional individualisation feature, the “First Class Rear” incorporates a Business centre console combining personal comfort with practical convenience (integration of a telephone handset, additional stowage compartments, folding table, etc.).

Concept: the best for both worlds

For the first time in the history of the S-Class, the development focus was on the long-wheelbase Saloon. Unlike before, the short-wheelbase version was derived from this. This is because the S-Class is not only firmly positioned as a prestige saloon in the large overseas markets such as the USA, China or Japan. Whereas in Europe and North America owners of an S-Class are frequently behind the wheel themselves, the flagship model in the Mercedes-Benz passenger-car portfolio is very definitely a chauffeur-driven vehicle in Asia. The logical consequence is the number of new features specifically related to comfort and safety in the rear – in the S-Class, there is no doubt that passengers in the rear are also seated in first class.

The occupants of the new S-Class benefit from the moderate increase in vehicle size [1] by an improvement in all the interior dimensions: there are 12 millimetres of extra headroom for the driver, as well as 14 millimetres more shoulder room and 10 millimetres more elbow room in the front. Thanks to the 14-millimetre increase in rear kneeroom, travel becomes even more comfortable for passengers in the rear. Shoulder room in the rear has been improved by up to nine millimetres.

Control and display concept: elegant new command center

Two high-resolution TFT colour displays in 8:3 format with a screen diagonal of 30.7 cm (12.3 inches) form the new information centre in the S-Class. The left-hand display performs the functions of the previous instrument cluster, providing the driver with all relevant information. The right-hand display allows the convenient control of infotainment and comfort functions. For the new S-Class, the constantly increasing need to integrate additional functions into the vehicle led to a further development of the entire operating logic. Here ergonomics, operating convenience and safety along with attractiveness and aesthetics were the main considerations.

The aim in designing the control and display features was to group controls and display functions together in a coherent manner in terms of both design and functionality. Apart from the new displays, the metallised switch surfaces and solid aluminium controls are visual highlights of particularly high quality. Thanks to the fine structuring on the metal surfaces, each individual control has the sound, feel and attention to detail that makes a Mercedes-Benz so special.

The new control features include a touch-sensitive telephone keypad and an extended favourites function with twelve freely selectable memory places. The principal control element is the rotary pushbutton, with the usual direct access keys in the centre console for the most important functions and a toolbar for the driving assistance systems.

Voice entry using LINGUATRONIC via the Speech Dialog System allows complete addresses to be spoken in one go, for example (one-shot input). The telephone and audio systems can also be voice-controlled. The option of having text messages (SMS) or emails read out is a new feature.

Climate control: a wealth of new features for a pleasant atmosphere

During the systematic further development of the entire climate control system, a particular focus was placed on the development goals of performance, air quality, precise regulation, noise level and efficiency. As a new feature, the AIR-BALANCE package comprises perfume atomisation, ionisation and even more efficient filtration compared with the standard model. The THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control in the rear has two additional zones to improve thermal comfort. Electric heating of the armrests is a completely new feature.

As a world first, the new S-Class Saloon has an “active perfuming system” as part of the AIR-BALANCE package. ‘Active’ means that the perfuming system is switched on and off manually, with manual adjustment of the intensity. The perfume atomisation system individualises the smell of the vehicle interior. It neither changes the interior smell permanently, nor are perfume molecules deposited on fabric surfaces or clothing. The fragrance is discreet and mild, and dissipates rapidly.

Seats: mobile office and centre of wellbeing

With numerous world firsts such as the ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle or active seat ventilation with reversing fans, Mercedes-Benz has raised seating and climatic comfort in the S-Class to a new level. The seat developers have paid particular attention to the rear seats. There is a choice of five different rear seat variants including an Executive seat with a backrest angle adjustable by up to 43.5 degrees, allowing occupants in the rear to concentrate on work or relax in comfort.

The ENERGIZING massage function on the hot-stone principle is a world first. The seat specialists at Mercedes-Benz have developed a unique massage function with 14 separately actuated air cushions in the backrest, as well as an integrated warming function. There is a choice of six massage programmes, two of them using the warming function. The function is also available for the rear seats.

For the first time, so-called reversing fans are used in the active seat ventilation system. When the ventilation function starts, cooler surrounding air is first drawn onto the seat surface. This enables the surface temperature of a heated-up seat to be reduced much faster than with the previous active cooling systems. After four minutes the fans are automatically switched to blower mode to reduce draughts.

Two rear seat variants (static bench seat or individual seats with 37-degree adjustment) are available for the standard-wheelbase S-Class, and no less than five for the long-wheelbase version. The adjustment kinematics have been changed in the luxury and reclining seat variants. Unlike the conventional trailing backrest design, the backrest is adjusted separately so that the legroom and seat reference point remain unchanged. The cushion can be separately adjusted for angle and horizontal position.

The maximum backrest angle of the Executive seat (reclining seat) behind the front passenger seat is increased from 37 to 43.5 degrees, giving it the largest backrest inclination in the luxury segment. The reclining seat features a calf support which is freely adjustable for length and angle. In combination with the heel rest on the folding chauffeur seat at the front and an additional comfort cushion, this allows a reclined position that sets new standards in the automotive sector with respect to sleeping and resting comfort.

If the “First Class Rear” is specified (with rear centre console), the front console on the transmission tunnel is visually continued to the rear. It is equipped with innovative thermo-cup holders which use Peltier technology to cool or warm drinks over a longer period of time. Like an aircraft seat, the centre console is available with two tables which can be easily folded in or out using one hand.

Multimedia features: mobile concert hall

A completely new multimedia generation with intuitive operation and particularly tangible functions thanks to visualisation and animations celebrates its debut in the S-Class. Other innovations include the multi-user system, which allows independent access to the media sources of the entertainment system from any seat.

The innovative Frontbass system developed by Mercedes-Benz‑and used for the first time in a saloon car is a feature common to all the audio systems: the woofers are housed in the firewall, and use the almost 40-litre space in the cross-member and side member as a resonance chamber. Conventional woofers in the doors are therefore unnecessary. The mid-range speakers in the doors are relocated upwards. This improves the soundscape and allows additional stowage space in the doors.

As alternatives to the standard sound system with ten loudspeakers, two very high-quality audio systems are available which were developed together with the high-end audio specialist Burmester: the Burmester® Surround Sound system and the Burmester® High-End 3D‑Surround Sound system.

The interactive presentation of content is a prominent new feature of the navigation function. The new navitainment functions include an animated compass, the “Driveshow” for passenger information as in an aircraft, and the display of Google Maps on the head unit and in the rear. Information on the traffic situation is shown with hatched lines (rather than with vehicle silhouettes as before). With the new Live Traffic Information service, traffic data is transmitted in real time. As a result, the navigation system is better informed about the situation on the roads.

Body: maximum stability and high-quality lightweight design

A high level of crash safety, outstanding rigidity for excellent handling with extremely low levels of noise and vibration. These were the aims when developing the bodyshell for the new S-Class – a third-generation aluminium hybrid bodyshell. The lightweight index – the torsional stiffness in relation to weight and vehicle size – has been improved by 50 percent compared to the predecessor model.

Since the 220 model series was developed in the 1990s, with an optimally coordinated materials mix the hybrid lightweight construction has been further developed into an aluminium hybrid bodyshell. During this period the share of aluminium has increased to more than 50 percent. It has therefore been possible to maintain practically the same body weight for 20 years and even slightly reduce it, despite far more stringent comfort and safety requirements and additional functions. In addition to this, structural foams are used at specific points in node areas in the new model series. The entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front section of the body, consists of aluminium. The high percentage of aluminium is possible thanks to the use of a complete range of semi-finished products (casting, extrusion, sheet metal). The safety passenger cell is made using an extremely high percentage of high-strength steel.

This lightweight design by material and geometrical optimisation coupled with highly complex joining technology allows the new S-Class to further raise the bar in the demanding luxury saloon segment – without adding weight. With a torsional stiffness of 40.5 kN/degree (predecessor: 27.5 kN/degree), the S-Class achieves a new record in its segment.

Extended PRE-SAFE® protection: prevention is better than cure

Ten years ago, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a groundbreaking safety concept in the S-Class in the form of the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection system, which has been undergoing continuous refinement ever since. Now, the safety pioneer is increasing protection levels once again.

The new PRE-SAFE® functions can help to prevent collisions with pedestrians and vehicles in front in city traffic, defuse dangerous situations caused by traffic behind and enhance the protection offered by the seat belts.

  • The PRE-SAFE® Brake can also detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds up to 50 km/h.
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn the following traffic by activating the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes and thus minimise the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact. This additionally can reduce the risk of secondary accidents. Immediately before impact, the PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection measures, especially the reversible belt tensioners, are deployed.
  • With PRE-SAFE® Impulse, the driver and front passenger are pulled away from the direction of impact by their seat belts at an early phase of the crash before the resulting occupant deceleration sets in. This can substantially reduce the risk and severity of injuries in a frontal collision.

Setting the standard for safety in the rear: new features in the S-Class

Mercedes-Benz has extended the safety system for rear seat passengers further with the seat belt buckle extender, the beltbag and the cushionbag. The first two of these developments are included in the “PRE-SAFE® rear package”. With the illuminated seat belt buckle extender, an electric motor extends and retracts the belt buckle automatically. In this way, any belt slack in the area of the pelvis and thorax can be reduced so that passengers are secured more firmly in both the sideways and the lengthways direction.

The beltbag is an inflatable seat-belt strap that is able to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by lessening the strain placed on the ribcage. The reclining seat is equipped with a cushionbag under the seat cushion upholstery as standard. When the seat is reclined, it prevents the occupant from sliding beneath the seat belt (so-called submarining) in an accident. This has enabled Mercedes-Benz to design a comfortable reclining seat which provides a higher level of accident safety than a seat with a trailing backrest.

Intelligent Drive: networked with all senses

Avoid accidents and mitigate their consequences – this is the integrated approach adopted by Mercedes-Benz Accident Research under the heading “Real Life Safety”. Mercedes-Benz is systematically pursuing this strategy in the S-Class with numerous new assistance systems and greatly enhanced functions. Comfort and safety are enhanced at the same time. Mercedes-Benz calls this “Intelligent Drive”. The new functions all rely on the same sensor system, comprising a new stereo camera together with multistage radar sensors.

“Intelligent assistance systems analyse complex situations and better recognise potential dangers out on the road with the aid of improved environment sensor systems,” explains Prof. Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Figuratively speaking, the new S-Class doesn’t just have eyes at the front, it has 360-degree all-round vision.” A key factor is the networking of all systems, which safety experts call “sensor fusion”. The aim is to ensure comprehensive protection, not just for the occupants of a Mercedes-Benz, but for all other road users, too.

The support functions range from relieving the burden on the driver and therefore increasing comfort, to issuing visual, acoustic and/or tactile warning signals, to boosting the driver’s reactions. Some systems are even able to take corrective action in an emergency, such as autonomous application of the brakes to prevent an accident or lessen its severity. Here is a summary of the new assistance systems and those with notably enhanced functionality:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot takes the burden off the driver when it comes to lane guidance and is also able to follow vehicles in traffic jams automatically.
  • For the first time, thanks to the stereo camera the Brake Assist system BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist is able to detect crossing traffic and pedestrians too, and to boost the braking power applied by the driver accordingly.
  • If the lane markings are broken lines, Active Lane Keeping Assist can detect when the adjacent lane is occupied, especially by oncoming traffic, and reduce the risk of the vehicle leaving its lane unintentionally by applying the brakes on one side.
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently without dazzling traffic by masking out other vehicles in the beams’ cone of light.
  • Night View Assist Pluswas further improved and supplemented by a thermal imaging camera. Night View Assist Plus can alert the driver to the potential danger posed by pedestrians or animals in unlit areas in front of the vehicle by automatically switching from the speedometer to a crystal-sharp night view image and highlighting the sources of danger. A spotlight function is furthermore able to flash any pedestrians detected ahead. This attracts the driver’s attention to the source of the danger at the same time as warning the person on the side of the road.
  • ATTENTION ASSIST can warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness in an extended speed range and notify the driver of their current state of fatigue and the driving time since the last break, offers an adjustable sensitivity setting and, if a warning is emitted, indicates nearby service areas in the COMAND navigation system.

When it comes to technology, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is loaded.  It will have active seat belts (which are power-deployable), a system that works together with the PRE-SAFE system for automatic tension before an imminent collision. Another incredible addition is what’s being called Magic Body Control – a cutting edge Active Body Control suspension that detects road imperfections using a camera. When trouble is spotted, the Magic Body Control will automatically configure the suspension to compensate for the imperfection and offer the smoothest ride possible.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Exterior

Interior Details:

With its clear-cut architecture, the interior design of the new S-Class is the embodiment of a classic and serene, yet ultra-modern saloon car. The interior space derives its expressiveness from a distinctively flowing, sensual and elegant style. Horizontal features and lines create an ambiance characterised by visual breadth and calm solidity. High quality and elegance go hand in hand with clarity and functionality. The interior concept of the S-Class combines driving, spatial and operating comfort at the highest level.

The radically redesigned display extends behind the two-spoke steering wheel – reminiscent of the S-Class heritage – as a major part of the horizontal alignment. It replaces the traditional instrument cluster and combines numerous other functions in a visually and ergonomically highly sophisticated manner (see section “New display concept”). The entire display unit appears to be free-floating, an impression reinforced by ambience backlighting.

Dieter Zetsche 2014 Mercedes S-Class

The high-quality unit formed by the center air vents and the analogue clock is precisely set into three-dimensional wood trim. For the first time this classic wood trim feature is positioned very low. This creates a second level of decorative trim whose luxurious stitched leather lies in the primary field of vision. Both levels extend elegantly across the entire width of the dashboard and doors. With this layout the designers have created an association with the wingbeat of a bird. The result is an extraordinary impression of width combined with a pleasant, calm ambience.

The visually prominent dashboard is characterised by the striking double-S curve. This already made the preceding model unmistakable, and imparts a feeling of spaciousness, safety and security.

The perfectly coordinated use of materials and colours produces an elegant interior seemingly cast from a single mould. There is generous use of wood trim, especially in the dashboard and centre console. Metallised switch surfaces with pearl-effect paint finishes in three colour shades to suit the interior colour particularly highlight the outstanding quality.

Innovative lighting systems in the form of a continuous light band under the wood trim strips and the central display – a completely new dimension in ambience lighting – and elegant lighting units with stylish details in the headlining enhance the comfortable atmosphere. The number and size of the stowage facilities in the interior have been greatly increased compared to the preceding model.

Passengers in the rear are also seated in first-class – the design and exclusivity of the seats, door panels and all controls are to the same, high standard as the front. If a luxury or reclining seat (Executive seat) is specified for the rear, the backrest inclines backwards into the parcel shelf, which means that legroom is not restricted even in the resting position. As an additional individualisation feature, the “First Class Rear” incorporates a Business centre console combining personal comfort with practical convenience (integration of a telephone handset, additional stowage compartments, folding table, etc.). The side finishers of the front seats are formally integrated and feature useful stowage compartments (for details see section “Seats”).

In combination with the first-class quality of materials and outstandingly high perceived value, the decidedly varied range of available appointments emphatically confirms the premium positioning of Mercedes-Benz. The innovative architecture of the interior design, which is based on both additive and integrating features, allows a choice of different and very individual styling in terms of colours and materials.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Launch Date Confirmed

The next generation Mercedes-Benz S-class will be revealed in Hamburg on May 15, Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche has revealed

Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche has stated that the next generation 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-class will be revealed in Hamburg on May 15.

“The S-class is the most important car of all to us, Its success makes us stronger going forward,” said Zetsche.  A statement we couldn’t agree more with, especially now that the Maybach brand is gone, being replaced by a broader and more luxurious range of Mercedes-Benz S-Class models. The Mercedes-Benz brand has far better name recognition and a stronger base which should cause for greater success in the super luxury market.

“We can sell more cars at better prices with the S-class,” Zetsche said. “Pushing the S-class upmarket will also further strengthen and balance the Mercedes brand at the top end just as we are going smaller with the A-class range of cars.”

Zetsche also confirmed that being revealed next year will be the next generation C-Class, another important model for Mercedes, especially in the Chinese market.  Strong sales of the new E-Class and upcoming C-Class will be necessary to close the gap between Mercedes, Audi and BMW.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class To Come in Five Different Styles

According to sources, the upcoming new S-Class lineup will include five models in three different body styles

According to sources, the upcoming new S-Class (W222) lineup will include five models in three different body styles.

The sedan version will be offered in three different lengths, due to the German car maker’s recent decision to axe its Maybach brand after a decade of disappointing sales following its resurrection in 2002.  Also in the family will be a coupe and cabriolet model. The S-Class Coupe is likely to be officially revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014, while the convertible will be revealed six month later in Frankfurt.

All three sedans are expected to adopt the same styling, except for the length of the rear doors and windows. Standard and long wheelbase models will be unveiled this September in Frankfurt, while the Pullman version could be revealed next year at the Beijing Motor Show. Set to replace the Maybach 57, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Pullman will probably have a 5700mm length.

ECO Start/Stop Function Now Standard on Mercedes S350 BlueTEC

S350 BlueTEC standard with an ECO start/stop function, lowering fuel consumption up to 1.6 gallons per 62 miles

Effective immediately, Mercedes-Benz is combining the V6 diesel engine in the S350 BlueTEC with an ECO start/stop function. As a result, the fuel consumption of the luxury class saloon has been lowered to 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres or 1.6 gallons per 62 miles (NEDC combined). The S 350 BlueTEC is also one of the world’s cleanest diesel models.

The V6 diesel engine in the S 350 BlueTEC develops an output of 190 kW (258 hp) from a displacement of 2987 cc, and generates 620 Nm of torque. It also comes with excellent fuel consumption and emission values as standard. Thanks to BlueTEC with AdBlue exhaust treatment, the S-Class model – which made its debut in 2010 – currently already fulfils the emission values planned for 2014 in accordance with the EU6 standard, and as such is one of the world’s cleanest diesel vehicles. The new ECO start/stop function fitted as standard now helps to improve the efficiency of the luxury class saloon even further. With a combined consumption of 6.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, the S 350 BlueTEC improves on the figures of its predecessor by 0.6 litre, or nine percent. CO2 emissions have dropped from 177 to 164 grammes per kilometre.

The ECO start/stop system developed by Mercedes-Benz switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a standstill – for example at traffic lights. The engine then immediately starts again as soon as the driver takes his foot off the brake pedal. Thanks to the intelligent control system, all of the vehicle’s functions and comfort systems continue to operate during the stop phase.

The increase in efficiency was also achieved, among other things, through the use of TWAS(twin-wire-arc-sprayed) coating technology.

AMG has been using TWAS coating technology since 2005 in the 6.3-litre V8 in all model series, including the new SLS. Based on the positive experiences gained, Mercedes has now also developed this technology further for diesel engines. It is currently being introduced in the new Mercedes V6 diesel engine.

The benefits are impressive. Taking the diesel engine as an example, the potential savings are around 3%. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 4.3 kg.

The price of the Mercedes-Benz S 350 BlueTEC remains unchanged at 76,517 euros, inclusive of 19% VAT.

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Look-Alike by INDEN Design

Inden Design unveiled their latest package that aims to make the Mercedes-Benz S500 look more like the S65 AMG

Inden Design, a German based tuning firm, unveiled their latest package that aims to make the Mercedes-Benz S500 (W221) look more like the S65 AMG.

Daytime running lights are added to the tuned S-Class in addition to the retouch taillights and side mirrors. Also on the exterior, a new front spoiler, rear diffuser with integrated quad exhaust pipes and updated side sills. To finished it off, the Mercedes S500 receives an updated paint job with a charcoal gray matte film.

In terms of engine tuning, there is a power upgrade to 420 PS (309 kW / 414 bhp) up from the S-Class’ 388 PS (285 kW / 383 bhp) on the 5.5 liter V8 Engine. This is in part thanks to the new stainless-steel exhaust system with AMG pipes.

Brakes are also upgraded to the same found on the S600 V12 BiTurbo with 6-piston calipers for the front wheels and 4-piston brake calipers on the rear axle.

50 mm suspension lowering can also be seen on the new INDEN Design S-Class and really helps to highlight the new 20-inch wheels with 265/30-20 tires at the front and 275/30-20 tires for the rear rims.

For the interior, INDEN Design added a two-tone leather and Alcantara finish for the headliner, door panels and all three pillars along with carbon inserts replacing the former wood trims. Also, a new speedometer now reads up to 360 km/h.

Testing in -22 degree Swedish weather, the next generation S-Class once again took to the streets wrapped in camouflage

Testing in -22 degree Swedish weather, the next generation S-Class once again took to the streets wrapped in a black blanket of camouflage. While still heavily covered, we are able to see that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan looks to have smaller front lights with LED indicators that what we see on the current model. Hints of the F700 Concept can be seen in the S-Class Grille, having a more upright slope.

As we saw on previous spy photos, the new Mercedes S-Class appears to be longer in length and boasts a slightly bigger wheelbase.

In terms of power, look for the 2013 S-Class to note a range of more fuel efficient engines, with Mercedes’ new direct injection power plants providing a solid range to work with. The 2011 CL-Class should serve as a good starting point of what we can look forward to under the hood, with the addition of a new plug-in option based on the Vision S500 Plug-In Hybrid. Of course, look for both S63 AMG and S65 AMG models as well.

The new S-Class is expected to make its world debut later this year, with sales starting in early 2012.

A big thanks to Andrus and GMotors for the photos.

BRABUS Mercedes SV12 R Biturbo 800 Makes its Debut

German Tuner Brabus has unveiled the SV12 R Biturbo 800, the world's fastest and most powerful sedan

German Tuner Brabus has unveiled the SV12 R Biturbo 800, the world’s fastest and most powerful sedan.

The SV12 R Biturbo 800 features a 5.5 liter V12 engine that, thanks to a special crankshaft with longer stroke, precision-balanced piston rods, larger-diameter pistons and corresponding larger cylinder bore, has increased to 6.3 liters. Brabus also installed new turbochargers, a sport exhaust, carbon fiber air intake, four intercoolers and a recalibrated ECU.

With all these upgrades and changes, the updated V12 produces a whopping 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft). Even with the torque being electronically limted to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft), the S-Class still accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and 0-124 mph in 10.3 seconds. You can continue on accelerating until you reach a top speed of217 mphwhich you are unfortunatley electronically limited to.

The World’s Most Powerful and Fastest Luxury Sedan

BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 800: 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft) transform the Mercedes S 600 in latest BRABUS specification into the world’s most powerful luxury sedan. But that’s not all: With an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph) the exclusive four-seater also wins the ‘Blue Ribbon’ as the world’s fastest luxury liner. BRABUS rounds out the new high-performance standard with a sporty yet elegant designer suit, custom-tailored wheels with diameters of up to 21 inches, a high-performance brake system and customer-specific interior upgrades including a state-of-the-art “iBusiness” multimedia system with Apple components.

Twelve-cylinder high-capacity engines in the S-Class look back on almost two decades of tradition at BRABUS. Powered by the SV12 R Biturbo 800 engine originally developed for the BRABUS E V12 “one of ten” the automotive luxury class now attains a new level of performance.

Displacement of the V12 engine that normally powers the latest Mercedes 600 models is increased from 5.5 to 6.3 liters (336 to 385 cu. in.) The displacement increase is the product of a special crankshaft with longer stroke, precision-balanced piston rods, larger-diameter pistons and corresponding larger cylinder bore. The inner workings of the BRABUS engine are modified further by high-performance camshafts and flow-optimized cylinder heads.

The new air intake was custom-developed to fit in the available space under the hood of the S-Class. The combustion air is routed through a special carbon-fiber system. Also newly developed was the BRABUS Biturbo system with two special high-performance manifolds with integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers. The system also includes four water-to-air intercoolers. The BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with sport catalysts and four exhaust tips with BRABUS-characteristic design optimizes power yield and gives the engine a more dominant exhaust note.

Newly calibrated engine electronics with precision-programmed mapping for injection and ignition ensure exemplary power yield and compliance with strict EURO V emission limits. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner ARAL.

The SV12 R Biturbo 800 engine produces 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW at 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), available from a low 2,100 rpm. For technical reasons peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a reinforced five-speed automatic transmission. A BRABUS high-performance limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent is available as an option.

The extraordinary performance figures elevate the BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 800 to the exalted position of the world’s most powerful and fastest luxury sedan. Acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) of 3.9 seconds and of just 10.3 seconds to 200 km/h (124 mph) are as unmatched in this vehicle category as is the electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

To ensure that this level of performance can be enjoyed safely at all times BRABUS also significantly upgrades suspension, brakes and aerodynamics.

These upgrades naturally also include tires capable of handling the speeds this car is capable of. The SV12 R Biturbo 800 can be equipped with BRABUS Monoblock wheels with diameters ranging from 19 to 21 inches. The largest version features wheels in size 9Jx21 on the front axle and in size 10.5Jx21 in the rear. These wheels are available in four distinct designs: Three-piece forged and high-gloss polished BRABUS Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes, multi-spoke Monoblock E wheels, Monoblock S wheels with double-spoke design and especially exclusive Monoblock F PLATINUM EDITION forged wheels with cross-spoke design. All wheels are mounted with Pirelli or YOKOHAMA tires in sizes 265/30 ZR 21 in front and 295/30 ZR 21 on the rear axle.

To further improve the already excellent driving dynamics of the high-performance luxury sedan BRABUS developed an electronics module for the Active Body Control suspension that lowers the ride height by some 15 millimeters (0.6 inches).

Maximum deceleration is even more important than exceptional acceleration and thus the BRABUS high-performance brake system is part of the high-tech package of the SV12 R Biturbo 800. The brake features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers and 380 x 36-mm (15.0 x 1.42 inches) vented and cross-drilled discs in front, and 355 x 28-mm (14.0 x 1.1 inches) discs and six-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the rear axle.

BRABUS ensures extremely high directional stability with a sporty yet elegant designer suit developed in the wind tunnel. The BRABUS front fascia lends the S-Class an even more striking face while its sophisticated shape reduces lift on the front axle. The large central air inlet optimizes cooling of engine and front brakes. Integrated auxiliary headlamps and LED daytime running lights further improve active safety. The BRABUS front spoiler lip is made from clear-coated carbon fiber and attaches to the underside of the BRABUS front fascia. It further optimizes the car’s aerodynamic properties.

For an even more extravagant appearance of the sedan BRABUS offers custom-tailored aluminum front fenders that replace their production counterparts. The exclusive character of these fenders is embodied by an integrated air vent made from clear-coated carbon fiber and a horizontal brace that spans the vent with embossed BRABUS signet and integrated LED lights. The latter are activated just like the ones in the BRABUS side sills via the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle.

For optimizing the airflow around the sides of the vehicle the designers sculpted BRABUS sill skirts that feature integrated entrance lights for added utility. They are activated by the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle as are the blue-illuminated BRABUS logos integrated into the scuff plates on both sides of the vehicle.

The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept is rounded out by the BRABUS rear spoiler lip, also available in a clear-coated carbon-fiber version, and the new rear fascia with centrally located reflector and custom cutouts for the BRABUS quad sport exhaust system. The underside of the rear fascia also features integrated LED lights which illuminate the ground behind the vehicle. They help avoid any unfortunate missteps into puddles or potholes lurking in the dark.

BRABUS combines this high-performance technical feast with exclusive interior options that suit each customer’s personal taste down to the last detail. These options include fully leather interiors in any color imaginable, Alcantara supplements and exclusive wood trim sets which can be ordered in any desired color thanks to an innovative staining technology.

A particular BRABUS specialty is the creation of state-of-the-art multimedia equipment including the innovative BRABUS “iBusiness” concept, where the BRABUS specialists for the first time have integrated Apple components into the vehicle electronics of the Mercedes S-Class.

Brabus Launches Mercedes S600 iBusiness Sedan

The "iBusiness" represents the world debut of a luxury sedan that combines the latest Apple components and a Brabus engine

The “iBusiness” represents the world debut of an absolutely unique luxury sedan that combines the latest Apple components with a powerful Brabus engine. The four-seater based on the Mercedes-Benz S600 reaches a top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph). It is powered by a BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 12-cylinder engine with a rated power output of 750 hp (740 bhp) / 552 kW and a peak torque of 1,350 Nm (995 lb-ft). The designers from BRABUS combine this engine with an innovative multimedia system that features the latest Apple components. Two iPads in the rear compartment not only play movies, music and Internet content, they also control all functions of the S-Class COMAND system.

The BRABUS “iBusiness” stands for more than just peak performance. It stands foremost for innovative multimedia technology for which the BRABUS electronics specialists integrate state-of-the-art Apple components into the vehicle electronics of a Mercedes for the very first time. The BRABUS upholstery shop creates the perfect luxurious surroundings. The elegant fully leather interior is masterfully crafted from a two-tone combination of high-quality BRABUS leather that is especially soft, breathable and highly durable.

At the heart of the “iBusiness” is state-of-the-art entertainment and communication technology on wheels. The centerpiece of the system is an ultra-small Mac minicomputer safely housed under the rear shelf in an electrically deployed drawer whose design mirrors the design of the computer itself.

A 15.2-inch TFT display with 16:9 aspect ratio is integrated into the headliner covered with the finest Alcantara and contrasted with leather. Together with the standard screens in the back of the front headrests it serves as a display for the multimedia system. USB 2.0 ports integrated into the rear compartment allow connecting various peripherals to the Mac such as a webcam for video conferencing or a digital camera. The “iBusiness” is connected to the Internet via UMTS and HSDPA.

The entire BRABUS multimedia system is controlled from the passenger seat or the rear compartment by two iPads that also control the car’s standard COMAND system with all functions such as radio, navigation system and telephone.

While on the move the two tablet computers and the Bluetooth keyboard can be safely secured in precisely fitting recesses in the luxurious BRABUS rear tables. The table tops are covered with the same exclusive leather as the entire interior and are bordered by high-gloss aluminum frames. The tables are electrically deployed from special BRABUS seatback consoles and are infinitely adjustable to any angle. They offer ample space for perusing documents, the Apple mouse and keyboard.

When the iPads are not in use or when the “iBusiness” is parked they can be stored securely and hidden from sight in custom-tailored compartments in the BRABUS center console. A special BRABUS app will be available shortly for iPad and iPhone, the latter of which is also part of the standard equipment of the luxury sedan.

The music comes from a 64GB Apple iPod touch that can store more than 14,000 songs. The sound is reproduced either by the sound system of the S-Class or by Sennheiser Noise Gard headphones, which filter out any unwanted ambient noise for unparalleled listening pleasure.

Power-operated curtains provide privacy for the rear passengers and together with an innovative color-changing interior lighting system create a serene atmosphere. The BRABUS fully leather interior creates an exclusive ambiance further augmented by the new BRABUS Yachting wood trim package. It lends the interior of the luxury sedan a maritime feel that is reminiscent of classic Italian sport boats. All wood trim elements of the S-Class are painstakingly created by hand from hundreds of individual pieces and have the look and feel of a miniature ship veneer. The wood inlays have a high-gloss finish and meet the latest automotive quality and safety guidelines.

Scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo, an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel and anodized aluminum pedals add further individual highlights.

The BRABUS “iBusiness” is also the world’s most powerful luxury sedan and the fastest office on wheels. This unique automobile is powered by a BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine, a prime example for the proven fact that there is no substitute for displacement except more displacement. A special crankshaft with longer stroke, forged pistons with larger diameter and increased cylinder bore bump displacement from standard 5.5 to 6.3 liters (336 to 385 cu. in.). In addition the inlet and outlet ports of both cylinder heads are optimized for improved mixture flow. Four special camshafts also contribute to that same effect.

The BRABUS engine specialists also fit the engine with larger turbochargers, a more efficient intercooling system and a stainless-steel high-performance quad exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts. Newly programmed engine electronics coordinate the perfect interaction of all new components and ensures not only maximum power yield but also exemplary low emissions that meet the latest emission limits.

The rated power output of 750 hp (740 bhp) / 552 kW at 5,500 rpm of the BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine is as superlative as its peak torque of 1,350 Nm (995 lb-ft) at 2,100 rpm. In the car torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

These extraordinary power specs make the “iBusiness” with BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine the most powerful and the fastest luxury sedan in the world. 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds and to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 11.9 seconds are just as impressive as the electronically limited top speed of 340 km/h (211 mph).

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a modified five-speed automatic transmission. The optionally available BRABUS limited-slip differential optimizes traction. All BRABUS powertrain components are operated with ARAL high-performance lubricants.

BRABUS also offers performance increases for the S 600 and S 65 models. The list of options ranges from the T12 performance kit for a rated power output of 580 hp (572 bhp) / 419 kW to the T 65 S performance kit which boosts power output of the S 65 model to 715 hp (705 bhp) / 526 kW.

On the outside the BRABUS “iBusiness” is clad in a sporty yet elegant designer suit. The BRABUS designers went into the wind tunnel to develop a striking front fascia whose sophisticated shape reduces lift on the front axle. The large center air inlet further optimizes cooling of the engine and the front brakes. Integrated auxiliary headlights and LED daytime running lights increase the safety factor.

Custom-tailored BRABUS aluminum sport fenders that replace their production counterparts give the S-Class sedan an even more extravagant look.

For optimizing the airflow around the sides of the vehicle the designers shaped BRABUS sill skirts that feature integrated entrance lights for added utility.

They help avoid any unfortunate missteps into puddles of potholes lurking in the dark.

The enormous performance of the “iBusiness” with BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine is kept safely under control with custom-tailored solutions for tires, brakes and suspension. They include BRABUS Monoblock light-alloy wheels with diameters ranging from 19 to 21 inches.

2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Active and Passive Safety

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG offers a unique combination of trend-setting driver assistance systems

Throughout the world the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is synonymous with the ultimate in active and passive safety systems. A significant part of such systems is also made up of the unique combination of trend-setting camera and radar-based driver assistance systems. The latest innovations are called Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, both of which are available as optional extras.

The combination of state-of-the-art assistance and protection systems turn the AMG S-Class into an “intelligent” partner which is able to “see”, “feel”, to respond “instinctively” to detected dangers and to act “on its own initiative” in order to avoid accidents or to reduce the severity of accidents. The vehicle makes use of cameras radar sensors which look far ahead, observe the conditions around the vehicle, and are able to interpret typical critical situations.

When the S 63 AMG unintentionally drives over a solid line to the right or left of a lane or on the outside of a bend, the new Active Lane Keeping Assist intervenes and prevents the vehicle from unintentionally leaving the lane. In such cases it applies the brakes to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle, using the sensor system of the Electronic Stability Program ESP®.

Similarly, when the new Active Blind Spot Assist system detects that changing lanes would be dangerous, it the driver by displaying a red warning in the glass of the relevant exterior mirror. If the driver ignores the warning signal and a vehicle in an adjacent lane comes too close, the ESP® takes corrective action by applying the brakes to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle.

Night View Assist PLUS and Speed Limit Assist

The Night View Assist Plus with infrared camera (optional extra) is equipped with a special pedestrian detection function: as soon as the system detects pedestrians on the road ahead, they are highlighted on the display to make them more readily noticeable.

The images supplied by the windscreen camera are also used by the Speed Limit Assist, which is available as an optional extra. It recognises speed limit signs in passing and shows the relevant speed limit in the central display.

Drowsiness detection on the basis of more than 70 parameters

Thanks to an innovative technology the S-Class has a very sensitive antenna for the attention level of its driver, and can warn him in time when he becomes drowsy. The ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system continuously monitors more than 70 different parameters. Once the evaluation electronics recognise the steering behaviour pattern that typically indicates the onset of drowsiness on the basis of information from the highly sensitive steering angle sensor, a warning signal is sounded and “ATTENTION ASSIST. Break!” appears in the instrument cluster. ATTENTION ASSIST is fitted as standard.

“Electronic crumple zone” for maximum occupant protection

In addition, Mercedes-Benz has enhanced the wide and intermediate range radars for the optional extras Brake Assist PLUS (BAS PLUS) and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control. Mercedes-Benz also offers another radar based system for the S-Class in the form of the PRE-SAFE® brake. If the driver is distracted and fails to recognise the immediate danger of a rear-end collision, or the warning signal of an assistance system, this system can intervene and brake the vehicle independently. The S-‑Class makes use of the latest development stage of this safety system: if the driver fails to react even after automatic, partial braking action, the PRE-SAFE® Brake activates the maximum braking pressure around 0.6 seconds before what is now recognised as an unavoidable accident – an emergency braking action that can significantly mitigate the severity of the impact. The PRE-SAFE® Brake therefore acts as something like an “electronic crumple zone”.

2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Design and Equipment

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG is stylish and offers effortless superiority in the typical AMG look

Dynamic, exclusive, self-confident and effortlessly superior – these are the very attributes embodied by the new S 63 AMG. Exterior and interior styling as well as the extensive standard-equipment package meet even the most discerning requirements. The first-class workmanship makes for a consummate feel-good atmosphere, while ensuring outstanding comfort on long journeys. A new highlight in the comprehensive range of exclusive optional equipment is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system.

Externally, the new S 63 AMG features a number of subtle updates. Enthusiasts will recognise the reference to the new powertrain with the “V8 Biturbo” lettering on the mudguards. Also boasting a new design are the AMG light-alloy wheels, with their unmistakable triple-spoke design, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish. They are fitted with 255/40 R 19 tyres at the front, and 275/40 R 19 tyres at the rear.

Athletic, striking, confident: the AMG styling includes the characteristic front apron with large cooling air intakes, side air outlets and also AMG-specific daytime driving lights featuring LED technology. Special side sill panels continue the vehicle’s line through to the rear, where the diffuser-look AMG rear apron painted in the same colour as the vehicle body creates an eye-catching feature. The AMG sports exhaust system with two newly designed chrome twin tailpipes makes for a further highlight.

New “AMG V8 BITURBO” greeting on start screen

After opening the driver’s door, the driver of the S 63 AMG is welcomed with the new “AMG V8 BITURBO” start screen in the AMG instrument cluster – a clear invitation to start the V8 biturbo engine straightaway. The AMG sports steering wheel with silver-coloured aluminium shift paddles, specially shaped grip area and perforated nappa leather around the steering wheel spokes, enables perfect control of the vehicle. The multifunction buttons on the left and right enable the driver to select numerous settings and call up information, for example in the AMG main menu: the activated transmission mode is displayed in the middle of the instrument cluster – the currently engaged gear and recommended upshifts are also shown in “M” mode. A new feature is the Controlled Efficiency start/stop function: a green “ECO” symbol in the AMG main menu tells the driver that it is enabled, while a yellow “ECO” symbol indicates that the “start/stop function is disabled”.

The AMG main menu also provides the driver with information about engine oil and coolant temperatures. With the RACETIMER, the driver can calculate lap times – on a private racing circuit, for instance. The RACETIMER records the time for the fastest lap, the average and maximum speeds and the lap distance. The AMG instrument cluster in the S 63 AMG comes with a 320 km/h speedometer scale. One of the most eye-catching features in the interior is the exclusive analogue clock with its “IWC Ingenieur” design in the centre console.

PASSION leather upholstery with new contrasting stitching

Standard equipment on the S 63 AMG includes 12-way electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with Memory package, Seat Comfort package with front active multicontour seats including massage and dynamic handling function, with seat heating and ventilation, PRE-SAFE® positioning function and NECK-PRO luxury head restraints. The PASSION leather upholstery boasts sporty, AMG-specific seat fluting and natural leather in the seat side bolsters, and also – as a new addition – contrasting colour stitching. This feature is to be found not only on the AMG sports seats, but also on the dashboard, the centre console, the door panelling, the rear bench seat as well as the parcel shelf.

The exclusive interior appointments on the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG are available in three colour combinations: black/black, alpaca grey/basalt grey and cashmere beige/savanna beige. A selection of three wood trim finishes – dark eucalyptus wood, dark burr walnut with a high-sheen finish, and burr walnut with a high-sheen finish – provides ample opportunities for tailoring the vehicle to your own personal tastes.

The extensive standard specification of the S 63 AMG includes (selection):

  • Adaptive brake lights
  • AMG door entry sills
  • AMG floor mats
  • AMG sports pedal cluster
  • ATTENTION ASSIST
  • COMAND
  • ISOFIX and automatic child seat recognition
  • Tilting/sliding glass sunroof, electric, with PRE-SAFE® closure function

Optional Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

As with the SLS AMG, a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system is now also available for the S 63 AMG as an exclusive optional extra. Newly developed especially for the S-Class by AMG together with renowned Danish hi-fi specialists Bang & Olufsen, the system promises a unique listening experience. With a total output of 1200 watts, 15 loudspeakers, acoustic lens tweeters in the A and B-pillars as well as a digital sound processor (DSP), it transforms the saloon into a full-blown concert hall with perfect acoustics.

A distinguishing visual feature of the system is the four illuminated soft dome acoustic lens tweeters which are integrated into the mirror triangles and B-pillars, and which light up as soon as the sound system is switched on. Their special design, which has built-in lenses beneath a special disc, enables a broad horizontal and narrow vertical sound distribution, which helps to create the typical virtual sound stage experience for the vehicle occupants. This Acoustic Lens Technology, together with the futuristic design, was adopted from the Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 5 home loudspeakers which are taken as the absolute reference models in specialist circles. A mid-range speaker and woofer are installed in each of the front doors, and a woofer in each of the rear doors. Two sub-woofers and two surround loudspeakers are housed in a special box in the parcel shelf, and a further surround loudspeaker is also accommodated in the centre of the dashboard. Another special feature is the construction of the loudspeakers: they are integrated into enclosed housings, and as such the vehicle body is not used as a resonating cavity – and the sound is not emitted outside the vehicle. Confidential phone calls, for example, cannot therefore be overheard outside.

A specific characteristic of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system is the excellent quality of the materials and workmanship: the high-quality loudspeaker covers are made of aluminium and feature laser-etched Bang & Olufsen lettering.

Two amplifiers with a total power output of 1200 watts

The ultra-compact 750-watt Bang & Olufsen ICEPower® amplifer converts over 90 percent of the energy fed in into output, unlike conventional car hi-fi amplifiers which manage around 30 percent. The 450-watt DSP amplifier converts the stereo sound and the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal into surround sound, and is really the “brain” of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system. DSP stands for Digital Sound Processor. All functions can be operated using the COMAND APS via a special Bang & Olufsen menu.

Whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion, the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system delivers consummate listening pleasure. The precision sound reproduction guarantees that original recordings can be heard as clearly as if they were being heard live. In other words: in acoustic terms, nothing is added, amplified or taken away. The personal taste in music of the people sitting in the vehicle is of secondary importance here, as is the source of that music The occupants of the S 63 AMG have a choice between the realistic high-end “reference” studio sound and voluminous surround sound. At the same time, the so-called “sweet spot” – described by hi-fi experts as being that point at which sound is optimally received – can be shifted from the front, via the centre to the rear.

Dynamic road noise compensation

Listening pleasure is also possible with the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system on long journeys in the S-Class, without having a tiring effect. A significant part of the reason for this lies with the dynamic road noise compensation: a microphone built into the roof lining is constantly delivering data on the current level of interior noise. The digital sound processor analyses all the wavebands and increases the volume as required depending on the vehicle speed – and not just generally, but individually for each speaker and for the different frequencies. The reason for this is it makes a difference to the human ear whether background noise is diffuse, as it is when it comes from airflow or from the tyres; or direct, as it is, for example, from the exhaust system when the vehicle is accelerating.

The new Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system can also be combined with SPLITVIEW as well as the Rear Seat Entertainment System.

The wide range of optional extras also includes (selection):

  • Ambient lighting, adjustable in three colours
  • Brake Assist PLUS
  • DAB – digital radio
  • DISTRONIC PLUS
  • Parking package (reversing camera and PARKTRONIC incl. Parking Guidance)

2011 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG General Overview

The top-of-the-range S-Class V8 model, the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG marks the start of a new chapter in the "AMG Performance 2015"

The top-of-the-range S-Class V8 model, the Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG, is to benefit from a completely newly developed powertrain. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a peak output of up to 420 kW (571 hp) and a torque of up to 900 Nm, in combination with the unique AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, contributes towards a considerable reduction in consumption and emissions, while at the same time increasing maximum power and torque. With a fuel consumption of 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined), the new high-performance Saloon not only undercuts its direct competitors – it is also more than 25 percent more economical in terms of its fuel consumption than the previous model with naturally aspirated V8 engine.

The new S 63 AMG marks the start of a new chapter in the “AMG Performance 2015” drive strategy: Mercedes-AMG is continuing this impressive story and is meeting its promise to continuously reduce both the fuel consumption and emissions of new models with the new engine/transmission combination – while reaching new heights with the central AMG brand value of “performance”.

According to Ola Källenius, head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “We are heading into a new era with the S 63 AMG: for the first time we have combined spray-guided direct petrol injection with biturbocharging and the start/stop system. Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, we have reduced both fuel consumption and emissions significantly – while at the same time increasing output and torque.”

The new AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine will play a significant role in the Mercedes-AMG model strategy over the coming year. The unique AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission will also help to ensure that future high-performance AMG vehicles benefit from an exciting and at the same economical transmission of power too. The new engine/transmission combination marks a further milestone in the successful history of Mercedes-AMG, which began back in 1967.

Direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and twin turbocharging

Designated internally as the M157, the new V8 engine is a prime example of efficiency and features a whole host of impressive technological highlights: for the first time AMG is taking advantage of direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and piezo injectors. This technology enables improved fuel economy thanks to higher thermodynamic efficiency, which in turns leads to lower exhaust emissions. AMG has combined the spray-guided combustion with biturbocharging. Other highlights of the innovative, original eight-cylinder engine from Affalterbach include full aluminium crankcase, four-valve technology with variable intake valve timing, air/water charge air cooling, generator management and also standard Controlled Efficiency start/stop function. Compared with the AMG 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine with a displacement of 6208 cc, the new AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine achieves all this with a displacement of 5461 cc.

This high-tech package leads to a high output and torque yield, together with fuel consumption figures that are unrivalled in the competitive lineup. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a peak output of 400 kW (544 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package these figures are increased to 420 kW (571 hp) and 900 Nm. A look at the performance diagrams shows that no other engine in this output class achieves the figures delivered by the new AMG biturbo. The major difference between the two performance classes is an increase in the maximum charge pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar. In addition, the engine cover of the S 63 AMG with the AMG Performance package comes in genuine carbon fibre.

Quantum leap: fuel consumption reduced by more than 25 percent

With an NEDC fuel consumption of only 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres, the new S 63 AMG is 3.9 litres more economical than the previous model powered by the naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8 – despite an increase in output of 14 kW (19 hp) and 34 kW (46 hp) respectively, and in torque of 170 and 270 Nm. Engine specialists consider this achieved fuel saving of more than 25 percent to be nothing less than a quantum leap. CO2 emissions have likewise been significantly reduced: at 244 grams per kilometre, the figure is almost 30 percent lower than for the previous model. Both performance variants have identical fuel consumption and CO2 figures.

With figures like these, the new S 63 AMG is not only considerably better than all its competitors, but also more fuel-efficient than much less powerful cars in this segment.

Sports car-level performance

At the same time the S 63 AMG delivers superior performance at sports car level: the high-performance saloon accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The 100 km/h mark is reached in just 4.4 seconds with the AMG Performance package, with the top speed increased to an electronically limited 300 km/h.

It is not only the unrivalled torque delivery of this turbocharged eight-cylinder that makes the heart beat faster, as the agile responsiveness with no irritating charger delay leads to an effortlessness and dynamism previously unknown in this output class. All perfectly matched by the powerful, sonorous engine note. Moreover, this AMG high-performance engine naturally meets all the requirements with respect to smooth, quiet running and the comfort on long journeys that is to be expected of a Mercedes.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Power is transferred by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission used exclusively by AMG, which is already familiar from the SL 63 AMG and E 63 AMG and combines high emotional appeal with outstanding driving dynamics, impressive comfort and a high level of efficiency. The wet start-up clutch replaces a conventional torque converter, and helps to save fuel. The exemplary fuel economy is also in large measure due to the standard start/stop function. This system is active in the transmission’s Controlled Efficiency (“C”) mode, and switches the eight-cylinder engine off when the car comes to a stop. In “C” mode the sports saloon always starts off in second gear, and the transmission shifts to the next, higher gears at a decidedly early stage. With its high torque at low engine speeds, the V8 engine encourages a smooth, effortless driving style.

The eight-cylinder biturbo engine also features the generator management system familiar from the E 63 AMG: whenever the engine is on the overrun or when braking, kinetic energy is used to charge the battery rather than being wasted as heat in the usual way. In all other operating modes a combination of onboard network and generator management enables the generator to be kept at a low voltage. This reduces the load on the engine and makes for fuel savings of around 0.15 litres per 100 kilometres according to the NEDC standard, and up to 0.2 l/100 km in city traffic with its frequent overrun and braking phases.

Engine production – tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all other AMG engines, the new eight-cylinder biturbo is assembled by hand in the AMG engine shop taken into commission in 2002. Highly-qualified technicians assemble the M157 according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy, maintaining the very strictest quality standards. This painstaking care is attested to by the signature on the characteristic AMG engine plate.

Long tradition of powerful AMG V8 engines

Powerful eight-cylinder engines are an inseparable part of AMG’s corporate history. Established in 1967, the company immediately caused a stir with the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG which succeeded in taking second place at the 24-hour races at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium). The AMG racing saloon was technically based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. With an engine output of 184 kW (250 hp) at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 220 km/h, this luxury V8 saloon was Germany’s fastest regular production car at the time. Classic tuning as well as an enlarged displacement from 6330 to 6835 cc resulted in an increase in output to 315 kW (428 hp) at 5500 rpm and in torque from 500 to 608 Nm.

A further milestone in the AMG engine story was the M117, the first eight-cylinder unit with four-valve technology. With a displacement of 5.6 litres, 265 kW (360 hp) and 510 Nm of torque, this V8 accelerated the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 5.6 AMG to a top speed of 303 km/h in 1987. This made the coupé the fastest German car in series production, and American fans reverently christened it “The Hammer”.

Another important engine in the history of AMG was the supercharged AMG 5.5-litre V8 introduced in 2001: the M113 K developed an output of up to 428 kW (582 hp) and torque of 800 Nm. The supercharged AMG 5.5-litre V8 in the SLR McLaren of 2003 was even more powerful – the M155 developed up to 478 kW (650 hp) and 820 Nm. 2005 saw the debut of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine; depending on the model, the naturally aspirated, high-revving M156 developed up to 386 kW (525 hp) and 630 Nm. Exclusively reserved for the new SLS AMG, the likewise 6.3-litre M159 has a maximum output of 420 kW (571 hp) and maximum torque of 650 Nm.

Numerous victories in the “International Engine of the Year Awards”

The supercharged AMG 5.5-litre V8, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 and the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo were all able to win the Best Performance Engine category in the International Engine of the Year Awards. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 also won in 2009 and 2010 in the “Above 4 litres” class.

New AMG triple-spoke light-alloy wheels

In visual terms, the new S 63 AMG is distinguished by a number of subtle touches: “V8 Biturbo” lettering on the mudguards points to the new powertrain. Also new are the AMG triple-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, and fitted with 255/40 or 275/40 R 19 tyres. In the interior, the S 63 AMG boasts a newly designed AMG instrument cluster with “AMG V8 Biturbo” starting screen. The standard PASSION leather upholstery has been enhanced with new, contrasting colour stitching.

A new range of attractive optional appointments is now also available for the S 63 AMG: the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system, developed especially for the S-Class, ensures an exceptional listening experience. With a total output of 1200 watts, 15 loudspeakers, acoustic lens tweeters in the A and B-pillars as well as a digital sound processor (DSP), it transforms the Saloon into a full-blown concert hall with perfect acoustics.

Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist

The unique combination of innovative camera and radar-based driver assistance systems has been enhanced even further with immediate effect with a view to perfecting the vehicle’s active and passive safety. The new Active Lane Keeping Assist comes into play when the S 63 AMG unintentionally strays over a solid line on the right or left of a lane or on the outside of a bend. In such cases the Electronic Stability Program ESP® applies the brakes to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle to prevent it from unintentionally straying from its lane.

Also new is the Active Blind Spot Assist, which warns the driver by displaying a red warning in the glass of the relevant exterior mirror when it detects that changing lanes would be too dangerous. If the driver ignores the warning signal and a vehicle in an adjacent lane comes too close, the ESP® takes corrective action by applying the brakes to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle.

Crosswind stabilisation, Torque Vectoring Brake and Direct-Steer system

The AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control (ABC) provides crosswind stabilisation as standard equipment: thanks to this function, influences caused by crosswinds are compensated for, or – in the case of strong gusts – reduced to a minimum. ABC compensates against the effect of crosswinds by adjusting the wheel load distribution within milliseconds, using the yaw-rate and lateral acceleration sensors of the ESP®.

Also making up the standard equipment is the Torque Vectoring Brake: when cornering, brief direct application of the brakes has an effect on the vehicle’s inner rear wheel so that the saloon corners precisely and under control at all times. The Torque Vectoring Brake is an additional feature of the Electronic Stability Program and not only noticeably improves responsiveness but also active handling safety in critical conditions. The driving experience is further heightened thanks to the Direct-Steer system: with its variable ratio depending on steering angle, it helps to ensure a more direct response when cornering, and therefore more responsive handling – in brief: enhanced driving pleasure at the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG S-Class.

AMG high-performance braking system with double floating brake caliper

Based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system, the AMG high-performance braking system continues to provide optimum fade resistance, deceleration and sensitivity. The front axle features a double floating brake caliper. This exclusive technology combines the advantages of a sliding-caliper disc brake – reduced heat transfer to the brake fluid and clear advantages in terms of comfort thanks to the brake lining guide mechanism – with the efficiency of an extra large fixed caliper brake.

Exclusive optional extras are also available for the S 63 AMG from the AMG
