Edition model with extensive optional extras

A further highlight at this year’s New York International Auto Show was the world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz EQC Edition 1886. This is why it combines extensive optional extras such as exclusive design elements with customer-friendly services connected with all aspects of electric mobility.

“The EQC is the pioneer of our future Mercedes-Benz EQ portfolio”, said Britta Seeger. “The EQC Edition 1886 not only stands for progressive design, exciting driving dynamics and a range more than suitable to daily needs, it also stands for intelligent additional services that anticipate and fulfil the driver’s needs. The clear objective here is long-term carefree use of the vehicle.”

Following its launch in Detroit and the second act in Geneva, the appearance in the “City of Dreams” already marks the third chapter in a series of premieres that has added new products right across the line-up. Sporty performance is the name of the game at the 2016 NYIAS. Celebrating their world premieres are the most dynamic Mercedes SUV, the new GLC Coupé and four newcomers from Mercedes-AMG led by the 401 hp E 43 4MATIC, currently the most powerful variant of the new E-Class. “2016 is our year of the dream cars, and New York is the perfect place to talk about them,” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “This is where we presented one of the most desirable automobiles ever in 1954 – the 300 SL gullwing. Today, it’s our aspiration to offer dream cars for every taste in our portfolio. Mercedes-Benz stands for modern luxury in unparalleled diversity.”

The GLC Coupé is a new, exceptionally sporty dream car in the continuously growing portfolio of Mercedes-Benz SUVs. The combination of multifunctional SUV and emotional coupé unites emotion with intelligence. With its distinctive body line and elongated greenhouse, the GLC Coupé has carried the design language of the show car presented in Shanghai in 2015 into production virtually unchanged. At the same time, the sports car among the Mercedes-Benz midsize SUVs comes with the brand’s compelling safety features, modern assistance systems and an exceptionally sporty and dynamic character.

“The new GLC Coupé is not a car for people who want what everybody wants,” says Källenius. “It’s the right car for people who rejoice in their individuality and want to tread new paths. Yet, with the biggest luggage space in its class, the GLC Coupé also boasts plenty of practical strengths.”

The AMG Performance 4MATIC all‑wheel drive comes as standard, uniting optimum traction with excellent agility in the E 43, too.

“Mercedes-Benz is clearly focused on customer orientation and the further expansion of its model line-up – we already have the youngest and broadest portfolio on the entire U.S. market,” says Dietmar Exler, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. “Our AMG performance brand is expanding its product range with the forthcoming 43 models. This sets the stage perfectly for continued market success in the USA.”

Mercedes-Benz at NYIAS

Double world premiere, the inventor of the premium SUV is presenting the extensively updated GLE and the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 at the New York International Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz USA has had an extremely successful start to 2015, with the strongest first quarter in company history. Growth in the United States is in part due to the sleek new models in the  SUV segment. In a double world premiere, the inventor of the premium SUV is presenting the extensively updated GLE and the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 at the New York International Auto Show. The newcomers are fully equipped to exceed the success of their globally popular predecessor, the M-Class. Mercedes-Benz is further intensifying its ongoing SUV offensive with the US market launch of the Mercedes-AMG G 65, the world’s most powerful off-road vehicle. With the GLC (previously GLK) and the GLS (successor to the GL), two more off-road vehicles bearing the three-pointed star are set to debut in the “Year of the SUV”. In parallel, the new smart fortwo is celebrating the start of sales in the USA. The ultra-compact two-seater is already eagerly anticipated in the nation’s main urban centers.

Since the world premiere of the SL Roadster in 1954, the New York International Auto Show has repeatedly served as the launch pad for great Mercedes success stories. The latest candidate for the “Hall of Fame” of bestsellers with the three-pointed star is the new GLE, the successor to the globally popular M-Class. The extensively updated full-size SUV combined refined comfort on and off-road with the versatility and robustness that is so typical of Mercedes SUVs. The new premium SUV fits in perfectly with the times thanks, in part, to its innovative drive technology. “The GLE 500 e 4MATIC is the first Mercedes SUV with plug-in hybrid technology. This high-tech drive combines the highest level of energy efficiency with outstanding performance and excellent road manners,” says Steve Cannon, President of Mercedes-Benz USA.

Highest efficiency, lowest emissions – the new GLE

A system output of 325 kW (442 hp) in the GLE 500 e 4MATIC guarantees potent performance – with CO2 emissions of just 78 g/km (3.3 l/100 km). The hybrid can also drive up to 30 kilometres with zero local emissions.  The new GLE entry model on the European market is the GLE 250 d. The 150 kW (204 hp) four-cylinder diesel offers refined performance with fuel consumption previously unheard-of in this vehicle segment. The new GLE 250 d is the world’s first series-production full-size SUV with conventional drive to emit just 140 g of CO2 (5.4 l/100 km). Across the entire engine line-up, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the GLE are down by 17 percent against those of its predecessor.

More powerful and agile than ever – the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and GLE 63 S

With their amazing performance characteristics, the AMG models are making a major contribution to SUV sales success in the USA. The 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 is more powerful than ever and is available in a choice of two output variants with either 410 kW (557 hp) or as an S model with 430 kW (585 hp). The running gear has been completely reworked for more agility and equipped as standard with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for stabilising body roll. Engine responsiveness and transmission shift times are now even sportier, underscoring AMG’s signature Driving Performance. “We established the high-performance SUV segment in 1999 with the ML 55 AMG. Now, with the GLE 63, we are once again setting the bar a little higher when it comes to handling, responsiveness and precision,” says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Market launch in the USA – Mercedes-AMG G 65 with V12 engine

Delivering even more superlatives is the Mercedes-AMG G 65. The world’s most powerful SUV will be available for the first time on the US market. The 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine will generate 463 kW (630 hp) and delivers an astounding torque of 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft). The G 65 needs just 5.3 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h, with its top speed limited to 230 km/h. With the G 65, Mercedes-Benz USA is reacting to a growing number of customer seeking more performance and exclusivity in the luxury off-road league. Sales of Mercedes-Benz SUVs in the USA grew in 2014 by eleven percent, with more than one third of all sales bearing the three-pointed star already attributable to its versatile all-wheel drive vehicles.

Market launch in the USA – smart

Making its big entrance in New York is the new smart fortwo. The agile and comfortable two-seater comes to market with the world’s smallest turning circle (6.95 m / 22.80 ft), outstanding safety equipment, the 89 hp top engine variant for the USA, the new twinamic DCT dual-clutch transmission and state-of-the-art connectivity features. The sum of its features makes it the new “it” car, wherever the issue is modern urban mobility.

“With its many features, the new smart already had a great start in Europe and we cannot wait to bring it to the streets of this great country and this great city,” says smart boss Dr. Annette Winkler, speaking about the US market launch. The fundamental strengths of the smart for two – manoeuvrability, safety, efficiency – are already the talk of the New York authorities. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is testing the predecessor of the new fortwo for its suitability as a patrol car on the streets of the Big Apple.

In-Depth Look: Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

An in-depth look at the Mercedes S63 AMG as well as a video from the New York Auto Show

AMG sports exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps – Emotive and sporty performance or restrained and relaxing cruising: the S 63 AMG Coupé even has a choice of bespoke sounds. The AMG sports exhaust system meets individual driver requirements as it has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, hallmark AMG emotive engine sound.

Check out the video below from the Premiere at the New York Auto Show…Short on time, skip to a little over a minute in to get to the good stuff.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the S 63 AMG Coupé is assembled by hand at the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines in Affalterbach according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine. Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the two key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can configure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are three modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). The ECO start/stop function is fitted as standard.

Optional: performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

There are two variants of the S 63 AMG Coupé available: with rear-wheel drive or, for the first time, also with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive. With permanent all-wheel drive, 33 percent of the engine torque is sent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive also enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 50 newton metres, which exploits the frictional connection potential of all four wheels to the full on snow and ice in particular.

AIRMATIC air suspension or MAGIC BODY CONTROL

As with the transmission, customers also get a choice when it comes to the AMG sports suspension: the rear-wheel-drive S 63 AMG Coupé is equipped with MAGIC BODY CONTROL, while the all-wheel-drive version of the two-door model features the full air-suspension system AIRMATIC with the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S 63 AMG Coupé 4MATIC. These measures enhance the vehicle’s agility when driving dynamically.

Curve tilting function is a world first

The S 63 AMG Coupé with rear-wheel drive features AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL. There is also a world first for series-produced cars in the shape of the curve tilting function. This function allows the S 63 AMG Coupé to lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of three drive modes using the ABC switch; it is active in the speed range from 30 to 180 km/h.

In addition to the curve tilting function, the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system includes ROAD SURFACE SCAN and Active Body Control (ABC) as standard. With Active Body Control the suspension struts are equipped with hydraulic cylinders (so-called plungers), in order to adjust the force in each strut individually. Depending on the curve driven, the curve tilting function shifts the base point of each individual strut. This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second and to angles of up to 2.5 degrees in curves – depending on the road angle and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to 15 metres ahead, and an additional lateral acceleration sensor.

ROAD SURFACE SCAN is a technology that can detect surface undulations in advance with the help of a stereo camera. MAGIC BODY CONTROL then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation. Both suspension modes – “Comfort” and “Sport” – are also available here. The AMG-specific elastokinematics also ensure more directness when adopting a dynamic driving style.

Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Wheels

Systematic lightweight construction: AMG forged wheels as standard

The S 63 AMG Coupé is equipped with AMG forged light-alloy wheels as standard. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower unsprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S 63 AMG Coupé is fitted with multi-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish – 8.5 x 19 at the front and 9.5 x 19 at the rear, with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tyres respectively.

Optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tyres respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the ten spokes. As an option, these forged wheels are also available painted in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange. Alternatively, forged wheels of the same sizes in a 5‑twin-spoke design painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and a black wheel bolt cover are available.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first time

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S 63 AMG Coupé, which is equipped with a weight-optimised, fade-resistant AMG high-performance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort.

The S 63 AMG Coupé also boasts exciting looks to emphasise its sporty performance: it exudes dominance and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous filigree aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome. Whether the car is moving or not, distinctive AMG lettering on the side between the louvres leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach. The A-wing is located below the radiator grille. This three-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body colour, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylised “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver chrome optimises the flow of air to the cooling modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduces front-axle lift and optimises the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-quality, three-dimensional inserts in silver chrome. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S 63 AMG Coupé exude dynamism even when it is at a standstill. Further eye-catching features of the side design include the large AMG forged wheels. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in a new, contemporary typography on the front wings is another hallmark AMG design touch.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye straight away. The lower trim element in silver chrome is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with sports flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Stylised, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimise aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end design.

There is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert. New aluminium shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gear and enhance dynamism. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT colour display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials. In addition to the specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer with 330 km/h scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

The new, innovative touchpad, fitted as standard, makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. The safety and assistance systems are the same as those for the S 500 4MATIC Coupé.

Even more exclusivity: the S 63 AMG Coupé “Edition 1”

One particularly exclusive model in the range is the S 63 AMG Coupé “Edition 1”, which will be available one year after market launch. The expressive arrangement of exclusive exterior and interior details arouses pure fascination. Swarovski crystals in the LED high-performance headlamps lend the car an irresistible look on the outside, while the Exclusive Interior package creates an even more exquisite ambience on the inside. The latter includes AMG sports seats upholstered in designo Exclusive nappa leather in crystal grey/black or bengal red/black with contrasting topstitching and piping. In keeping with this colour scheme, the upper section of the dashboard, the front and rear centre armrests, and the door linings are trimmed in nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, while the roof liner and the sun screens are in DINAMICA microfibre. Further features of the “Edition 1” include AMG Exclusive floor mats with nappa leather edging, door sill panels with illuminated AMG lettering and a high-gloss black poplar wood trim. The AMG sports steering wheel has “Edition 1” lettering. Night View Assist Plus is fitted as standard.

Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Official Announcement – Debut in New York

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe Photos and Details, World Premiere will be at the New York International Auto Show

The new S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range. Exciting lines underpin this twodoor model’s design. Power and sensual purity combine to give the vehicle irresistible presence and breathtaking performance. Equally impressive is the combination of outstanding driving dynamics, advanced lightweight construction and groundbreaking efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine is a paragon of poise and assurance. Boasting an output of 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the S63 AMG Coupe delivers exceptional performance with remarkably low fuel consumption. In addition, performance- oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive (33/67% split) will come standard in the U.S. market for optimum traction in any driving situation.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new S63 AMG Coupe is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupe also comes with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative. Mercedes-AMG is putting the pedal to the metal again in the new year. Our model initiative is set to continue at blistering pace in 2014.”

Up to 140 pounds lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight Performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight construction has reduced the vehicle weight by up to 140 pounds – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the preceding model. This weight savings was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight improves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio results in impressive performance: the S63 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 577 hp and 664 ft-lb of torque, the AMG eightcylinder unit meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 41 hp and torque by 74 lb-ft. Yet the S63 AMG Coupe still consumes less fuel.

The model at a glance:

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine.

AMG sport exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps

Emotional and sporty performance or restrained and relaxing cruising: the S63 AMG Coupe even has a choice of bespoke sounds. The AMG sport exhaust system meets individual driver requirements as it has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the S63 AMG Coupe is assembled by hand at the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines in Affalterbach according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz high-performance brand.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

For the first time, the S63 AMG Coupe comes standard in the U.S. market with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. With permanent all-wheel drive, 33 percent of the engine torque is sent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive also enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces when equipped with winter tires**. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which maximizes the frictional connection potential of all four wheels.

**all S63 AMG Coupe and Sedan models come equipped with standard summer performance tires.

AIRMATIC air suspension

The S63 AMG Coupe 4MATIC features the full air-suspension system AIRMATIC with the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe. These measures enhance the vehicle’s agility for performance driving.

Systematic lightweight construction: Available AMG forged wheels

The S63 AMG Coupe is available with optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower unsprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response.

Optional wheels include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the ten spokes. These forged wheels are also available painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first time

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S63 AMG Coupe, which is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses and enhanced braking performance.

Design: AMG combines sensual purity with breaktaking performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe also boasts exciting looks to emphasize its sporty performance: it exudes power and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver shadow (a matte silver finish). Whether in motion or stationary, distinctive AMG lettering between the twin-blade lamellas leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach. The A-wing is located below the radiator grille. This three-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body color, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver shadow optimizes the flow of air to the cooling modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduces front-axle lift and enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-quality, three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe exude energy even when it is at a standstill. Further eye-catching features of the side design include the large AMG designed wheels. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in a new, contemporary typography on the front wings is another hallmark AMG design touch.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye right away. The lower trim element in silver shadow is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system with sport flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Stylized, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimize aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end design.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive Live in New York

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the future in electric driving, celebrating its premiere at the 2013 New York International Auto Show

The future of electric driving celebrated its world premiere this morning at the 2013 New York International Auto Show: the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive makes its debut with a dynamic design, high-quality interior and a high-torque electric motor for local emission-free driving. This makes for lively and effortless driving pleasure over a range of around 115 miles. In addition, the B-Class Electric Drive is digitally networked meaning it can be conveniently checked and configured via the internet. As a true Mercedes it also sets high standards in terms of comfort, quality and safety. Bearing the Mercedes star as an unmistakable trademark, the B-Class Electric Drive will be launched first in the USA at the beginning of 2014, where it will be the first luxury battery electric car from Mercedes-Benz in the market.

The new B-Class Electric Drive surprises with a particularly dynamic driving experience, delivering decidedly powerful acceleration while gliding along the road practically silently. The driver and passengers in this new electric Mercedes will enjoy the familiar comfort of a well designed, high-quality interior offering a generous amount of space. The B-Class Electric Drive thus combines dynamism and driving pleasure with zero local emissions – in short, electric driving at the premium level.

According to Dr. Joachim Schmidt, member of the Mercedes-Benz Cars Board of Management responsible for Sales and Marketing: “The B-Class Electric Drive meets the wishes of many customers for emission-free driving without foregoing the hallmark attributes of a Mercedes-Benz, namely safety, comfort and, of course, not to forget exhilarating driving pleasure.”

The new Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive will be availabe in the U.S. early next year but pre-orders will likely make it sold out for quite a while so place your order early if you want one.

Powerful and lively drive system

The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive is based on the conventionally powered B-Class, which has become a bestseller in many countries since its market debut in 2011. As a particularly versatile vehicle concept, the B-Class also allows environmentally friendly motoring at the Mercedes level thanks to its innovative electric drive. In the USA, the vehicle is being introduced onto the market exclusively as the electric variant.

Quiet and local emission-free drive power is provided by an electric motor generating more than 100 kW. Typically for an electric drive, the maximum torque of 310 Nm is available right from the first tap on the accelerator pedal – this roughly corresponds to the torque delivery of a modern petrol engine with a displacement of 3.0 litres. This results in decidedly powerful acceleration from a standing start. For the standard sprint from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h), the electric-powered B-Class requires considerably less than ten seconds. This guarantees superior driving performance and highly dynamic, exhilarating driving pleasure in any situation.

A powerful lithium-ion battery feeds energy to the electric drive and is accommodated in the so-called “Energy Space” in the vehicle’s underfloor – a solution which is both space-saving and safe. Thanks to this intelligent packaging, the five-seater retains the familiar, generous interior space and luggage space of the B-Class.

Emission-free even over longer distances

The maximum speed is electronically limited to 100 mph (160 km/h) in the interests of operating range. Depending on the respective driving cycle, the range is around 115 miles (200 km). This means that in addition to emission-free driving in urban traffic and on short-range trips, longer journeys can also be undertaken without any problems – such as the distances covered on a daily basis by commuters going to work, for example. The B-Class Electric Drive can be recharged at any standard household power socket. In the USA, the charging time for a range of about 60 miles (100 km) is less than 2 hours at 240 V/40 A.

While the car is on the move, the electric drive itself contributes to a favourable energy balance through recuperation, by converting kinetic energy into electric current in deceleration mode and during braking and feeding this energy into the battery.

Dynamic Mercedes-Benz design

Refined sportiness together with aesthetic visual appeal – the B-Class Electric Drive is another example of the self-assured and dynamic Mercedes design, with powerful, tense lines and finely styled details. Both the front and rear set the tone for the vehicle’s width, which comes courtesy of the wide, prominent grille and headlamps extending into the vehicle sides, as well as the wide rear window, two-piece rear lamp cluster and the large tailgate with low boot sill. The side sill panels and striking bumpers with bar-shaped LED daytime driving lights exude dynamism. The charging socket is inconspicuously installed behind the charging flap.

Sporty interior with premium details

The interior underscores the high comfort standards of Mercedes-Benz. High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces, premium details, and precise finishing all highlight the fact that electric driving is defined at a very high level according to the philosophy of Mercedes-Benz.

The three large, round air vents in the centre with their distinctively designed cross-form nozzles are sporty features that contribute to the emotional design idiom of the interior. Above the air vents is the display screen for the telematics system which appears to be free-floating – a modern, eye-catching feature of the cockpit.

When it comes to information and communication systems, the electric B-Class offers levels of convenience and functionality that were previously reserved for higher classes of vehicles. Standard onboard features include the Audio 20 with a 14.7 cm colour screen, a twin tuner, an MP3-capable CD player and a USB connection. Navigation is provided for by the Becker® MAP PILOT. The multimedia system COMAND Online with internet access, navigation and LINGUATRONIC voice control is also available as an optional extra.

Functions specific to electric vehicles have been added to the instrumentation of the B-Class Electric Drive. The power display in the dial instrument on the right is immediately obvious. When power is being consumed, its pointer rises in a clockwise direction from the green to the red area, and drops back below the zero line when the vehicle is feeding recuperative energy back into the battery.

Fully networked: connected services

Its cutting-edge technology ensures that the B-Class Electric Drive is not only sustainable (because it offers local emission-free driving) and agile (because of its high torque and acceleration), but also fully networked. Remote checking and remote configuration of the vehicle are conveniently possible via the Vehicle Homepage, for example. The driver can easily access his vehicle via the internet, using a PC or smartphone. In this way, it is possible to check the current charge status of the lithium-ion battery or to verify the vehicle’s current range on a map. The planned route can also be displayed, immediately showing where the vehicle can be recharged along the way, if necessary. The range of connected services is rounded off with a pre-entry climate control option offering individually timed pre-heating or cooling. This pre-entry climate control system makes the B-Class Electric Drive unique in its segment.

Big on safety

Mercedes-Benz applies its familiar, high safety standards to the B-Class Electric Drive. Thanks to the innovative “Energy Space”, the battery is safely accommodated in the underfloor of the vehicle for crash protection. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has already equipped this innovative electric car with the radar-based collision warning system COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist as standard. This assistance system gives the driver a visual and acoustic warning of recognized obstacles, prepares him for braking action and assists him with the braking process as the situation requires. In this way it significantly reduces the danger of a rear-end collision. Additional, more up-to-date driver assistance systems are also available – among them Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Active Parking Assist.

Electric motoring made by Mercedes-Benz

Local emission-free electric vehicles such as the new B-Class Electric Drive are a major part of the Mercedes-Benz strategy for sustainable mobility. The Stuttgart-based premium manufacturer is reasserting its claim to leadership in this sector with electric vehicles which are fully suitable for everyday use. These include the A-Class E-CELL, the B-Class F-CELL, the Vito E-CELL van, and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive. The smart fortwo electric drive – of which well over 1000 units have been produced and delivered since the middle of last year – has enjoyed an extremely positive response from our customers, too. The new B-Class Electric Drive will be available initially in the USA from the beginning of 2014, and will be launched in European markets subsequently.

Volkswagen Up! Is World Car of the Year while Mercedes S250 CDI BlueEfficiency Takes Home Green Honors

Winners included the Porsche 991-series, Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency, Ford Focus Electric, Peugeot 3008 Hybrid and more

The exciting news for Mercedes-Benz this morning was that the brand won World Green Car of the Year for their S250 CDI BlueEfficiency at the 2012 New York Auto Show. But the car that every journalist and photographer at the Jacob Javits Center was trying to snap a picture of today was the VolkswagenUp! which won “World Car of The Year”.  This is the third time a Volkswagen has won the award, the last two being the 2010 Polo and 2009 Golf VI.

In total, thirty-four new vehicles made the list of candidates for World Car of the Year from around the world.  The list was then narrowed down to ten, then a final three:  the Volkswagen Up!, BMW 3 Series and the Porsche 911. This year, practicality won out over glitz – the Volkswagen Up! is practical, economical and easy to navigate on city streets.

In awarding the prize, the international journalists that make up the World Car of the Year jury observed that the Volkswagen has become more than just a city car. “The little Volkswagen Up! has altered what we have come to expect from the citycar segment. Of note are the responsive steering, sophisticated suspension setup, new efficient engines and the quality of materials and finish.  “Never before in this economy segment have owners felt so premium,” they concluded.

Other winners include Porsche’s new 991-series, which had more formidable competition as it won World Performance Car of the Year, beating out the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4and McLaren’s MP4-12C.  Mercedes-Benz’s S250 CDI BlueEfficiency won World Green Car of the Year, besting the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid. And Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque took top honors for the World Car Design of the Year.

To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates had to have been available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2011 and ending May 30, 2012.

Vehicles were selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-four top-level automotive journalists from twenty-five  countries around the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence, and each typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work.

Previous World Car of the Year winners were the Nissan Leaf in 2011, the Mazda2 / Mazda Demio in 2008, the Lexus LS460 in 2007, the BMW 3-Series in 2006, and the Audi A6 in 2005.

Becker JetVan Sprinter at 2012 New York Auto Show

The Becker JetVan Sprinter is first class driving enjoyed by celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Jerry Seinfeld and Bruce Springsteen

Now on display at the 2012 New York International Auto Show in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center is Becker Automotive Design’s specially outfitted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, aimed at emulating the interior of a first-class personal aircraft.

Based in Ventura, California, Becker Automotive Design has become well known for their premium Sprinter vans, custom-fitted with sumptuous interiors that typically include fully reclining sleeper seats, large flat-screen TVs and audio systems worthy of a sound studio. The Becker JetVan Sprinter on display at the New York Show is fitted with a Townsend leather interior finished in Golden Birdseye Maple trim. Featuring a 1,300-watt audio system with Creston 7.1 surround-sound digital processors and MacIntosh multi-channel amplifiers, the JetVan Sprinter is complete with a 40-inch Runco high-definition LCD flat screen and a 500-gigabyte on-board computer that works with a 4G wireless system.

All the AV systems, lighting, blinds, side entry door, center dividers, seat adjustments and computer functions are controlled through dual six-inch Creston touch panels, accessible from fully reclining 1st-class airline-type seats that include electrically adjustable leg extensions, lumbar supports, seat heating and massage system and fold-out aviation-type writing tables. The entire passenger cabin is climate controlled with a custom AC and fresh air filtration system.

Claus Tritt, General Manager of Commercial Vans for Mercedes-Benz USA said, “The Sprinter’s unique combination of quality, efficiency and almost endless versatility make it the perfect blank canvas for approved upfitters like Becker Automotive Designs. Their JetVan is just one example from the universe of Sprinter vans that have been tailored to individual business needs. Its magnificent craftsmanship and roomy, luxurious environment makes it the perfect vehicle for New York City, whether it might be for family sightseeing, getting office work done in privacy and comfort or negotiating a corporate merger.”

A Star-Studded Client List

Becker’s client list includes entertainment celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Jerry Seinfeld, Will Smith, Bruce Springsteen and Denzel Washington; sports figures such as Shaquille O’Neal and Tiger Woods; and captains of industry such as Sam Nazarian of SLS Hotels and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., chairman of the Warner Music Group.

CEO Howard Becker says, “Our clients love the Sprinter’s roomy interior, especially its ease of entry and stand-up headroom. They really value the productivity they gain in the comfort and privacy of their own high-tech work space. And, the star on the grille and the quality it symbolizes is important to them.”

“When we meet to plan the design of their new van, many clients want to duplicate the design of their personal aircraft in terms of colors, materials and features. To learn as much as we can about what they want, we even sit in their planes to discuss topics like lighting, cabinet design, type of leather and their taste in audio and video equipment.”

Decades ago, Becker moved from his small shop near the LAX airport to a larger facility near Beverly Hills, where he catered to the needs of celebrities in the entertainment and music industries. Later, he moved to an even larger production plant in Ventura, where the interiors are crafted and a wide range of high-technology audio and video equipment is custom-installed.

Most of their vans get at least one large flat screen TV with a state-of-the-art audio system and computer equipment that rivals a well-equipped office. In recent years, they’ve even installed “sling boxes” that emulate their clients’ home cable TV menus, including those from overseas markets.

Innovative BlueTEC Diesel with DEF Injection

“Many of our clients view the Sprinter as making an environmental statement. They understand the significance and the fuel efficiency of a clean diesel engine, and their drivers appreciate being able to idle for an extended time while they wait outside a studio,” says Becker.

All Sprinters are powered by an overhead-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder BlueTEC diesel that marks the first-ever use of super-clean BlueTEC technology in the commercial van market. Making the 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel as clean as a modern gasoline engine, a Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injection (DEF) system injects a special solution into the exhaust, reducing nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water in a downstream converter.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class at the 2012 New York Auto Show

The 2013 Mercedes GL is that debuted in New York is a larger, safer, roomier and more advanced version of its former self

Comfort, safety, elegance, efficiency – the all-new 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is the leading luxury full-size SUV. New innovations like standard COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (CPA), Crosswind Stabilization, self-leveling air suspension and electromechanical steering all increase active safety. Also new are assistance systems like Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, as well as PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist and the Surround View camera. With benchmark performance and ride characteristics both on-road and in rugged terrain, the GL-Class cradles its occupants with the first-class comfort of a luxurious sedan. The all-new GL is perfect for large families with ample space for up to seven passengers, while a host of efficiency measures delivers a substantial improvement in fuel economy. The 2013 GL-Class goes on sale in the U.S. in September 2012.

Its balanced proportions (length 201.6 inches, width 84.3 inches, height 72.8 inches) and generous wheelbase (121 inches) reaffirm the on-road comfort of this vehicle. At the same time, the short overhangs front and rear, as well as substantial ground clearance are clear indications of its off-road capabilities.

The typically high SUV waistline with a distinctive chrome strip, the dynamic sweep of the character line and the chrome edging around the windows all add to the refined look of the all-new GL. The standard wheels on the GL350 BlueTEC and GL450 are 19-inch twin five-spoke alloys, while the GL550 comes with 21-inch AMG twin 5-spoke wheels. 20-inch 10-spoke alloys are available as options on the GL350 BlueTEC and GL450.

Split LED taillight clusters feature light guide technology, and a large roof spoiler and bumper in the modern “wing” design with a large chrome skidplate complete the impressive exterior.

For GL customers who value a more sporty, dynamic look, illuminated brushed aluminum running boards are standard on the GL550 and available as an option for the GL350 BlueTEC and GL450. Also available for the GL450 is the Appearance package with 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, illuminated running boards and dual chrome-tipped exhaust outlets.

Inner values – the GL-Class delivers first-class travel

Powerfully dynamic and elegant interior architecture, fine materials and lots of attention to detail, perfect ergonomics and generous amounts of space – the interior of the GL-Class conveys Mercedes-Benz’s characteristic first-class ambience. Large trim pieces in fine wood finish, operating controls in silver chrome, and upholstery in MB-Tex with contrasting stitching reaffirm the overall premium feel of the GL’s interior. The seating offers plenty of space for seven in a 2-3-2 layout. Compared with the previous model, occupants have more shoulder, elbow and headroom on all three seating rows. Electric operation of the third row is a standard feature. A new option is the Power EASY-ENTRY system for access to the third seat row. The second-row bench offers a wide range of positioning options for even more interior versatility, including rear-seat recline and a 60/40 split for optimizing the luggage area, which has a load volume ranging from 16 to 94 cubic feet.

The dashboard design emphasizes the width of the interior. The modern instrument cluster boasts a premium look-and-feel with two clearly designed and easy-to-read dials and a large 4.5-inch photo-quality color display between them. The top of the dashboard is dominated by a large central color screen for the infotainment system. The operating and display concept is extremely user friendly, with the controller now located on the center console. It has a fine metal finish and offers intuitive and simple operation of infotainment, navigation and communication systems. Standard equipment includes a multifunction steering wheel in premium leather with gearshift controls and 12 multi-function buttons.

Beneath the center armrest with integrated hand support is a large stowage bin and, in front of it, the controls and switches for functions such as the AIRMATIC air suspension and the COMAND system. Included here are two cup holders with a premium wood retractable cover. The dashboard trim elements carry into the door trim panels, which feature distinctive stitching. The doormounted seat controls and handle are arranged in typical Mercedes fashion.

Assistance systems place the GL at the top of its class

For further improved safety and driver alertness in the new GL-Class there are a wide range of assistance systems. Standard equipment includes the usual array of stability control features ESP®, ASR, ABS and the PRE-SAFE® predictive occupant safety system, and also introduces for the first time as standard COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (CPA) and ATTENTION ASSIST driver drowsiness detection. The radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST operates at speeds between 20 and 155 mph and recognizes when the distance to the vehicle in front is decreasing. It can also recognize stationary objects. If there is an imminent risk of a collision, the system emits a visual and acoustic warning to alert the driver and prepares Brake Assist for the most immediate possible braking response, which is initiated as soon as the driver applies the brakes.

The system takes into account specific driving conditions such as bumper-tobumper traffic and adapts accordingly, calculating optimum brake pressure and adjusting it up or down as the situation changes – i.e. if the vehicle ahead accelerates, or if the distance to moving and stopping vehicles decreases. It calculates the precise braking force required to avoid an accident and makes best possible use of any distance remaining to minimize the risk of impact from the vehicle behind.

Another innovation and highlight in the new GL is the standard Crosswind Stabilization system, which assists the driver with targeted brake impulses in the event of strong crosswinds to deliver enhanced safety and vehicle control.

The optional Driver Assistance package includes DISTRONIC PLUS and PRESAFE® brake with autonomous braking function to optimize safety in certain dangerous situations. The package also comes with Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist. The Parking Assist package for the GL350 BlueTEC and GL450 features PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist for automatic maneuvering in and out of parallel parking spots, plus the new surround view camera. It uses image data from four cameras at the front and rear of the vehicle and in the exterior mirror casings to calculate a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings, and shows this and other perspectives on the large COMAND display. Also available for the GL350 BlueTEC and GL450 is the Lighting package, which includes Bi-xenon headlamps with Active Curve Illumination & Corner Illuminating Lamps, a headlamp cleaning system and Adaptive Highbeam Assist. The equipment in the Parking Assist and Lighting packages is standard for the GL550.

Passive safety – comprehensive safety for seven passengers

Together with the “electronic crumple zones” provided by the assistance systems and the intelligent bodyshell design, the passive occupant protection systems provide the highest possible level of protection. Adaptive, two-stage airbags for driver and front seat passenger, driver side knee airbag, front & rear side airbags and window curtain airbags across all three seating rows are all standard equipment, while all seven seats are fitted with three-point safety belts. It is important to visit a car insurance comparison site that considers the added safety features when giving you a insurance quote as they will save you money over standard SUV’s without such safety features.Pyrotechnic pre-tensioners, constant belt force limiters and electrically reversible pre-tensioners are all standard on the front seats, while the outboard seats on the middle row and the individual third-row seats are fitted with pre-tensioners and single-stage belt force limiters.

Clean power – the GL-Class engines

All three of the engines in the new GL lineup deliver outstanding performance paired with excellent efficiency.

The extensively re-engineered V6 under the hood of the new GL350 BlueTEC generates 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque, marking an increase of 30 hp and 55 lb-ft over the outgoing model. SCR technology and AdBlue® injection place it well within emissions requirements across all 50 states. Supremely fuel efficient, it offers astonishing range on a single tank, paired with excellent pulling power from very low revs.

The twin-turbo direct-injection V8 motor in the best-selling GL450 is an outstanding combination of performance and efficiency. With 362 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, it offers 27 hp and 67 lb-ft more than its predecessor. This added power and higher peak torque delivered over a wider rev range deliver all the prerequisites for relaxed long-distance cruising, as well as the versatility and responsiveness to deal with a wide variety of day-to-day activities.

At the top of the list, the GL550 now comes with a direct-injection twin-turbo 429 hp engine with a mighty 516 lb-ft of peak torque. While the extra 47 hp brings even more performance to this supremely refined full-size SUV, it is the added 125 lb-ft of peak torque that truly make themselves felt, in terms of off the line performance and the ability of the GL550 to handle heavy loads with ease. Alongside state-of-the-art engine technology, all three engines are equipped with extensive efficiency measures like direct-injection and paired with the new seven-speed automatic transmission. Intelligent alternator management keeps fuel consumption down, as does the electromechanical steering, the optimized belt drive with decoupler, the intelligent demand-based control of all auxiliary equipment and pumps. A key feature of the GL350 BlueTEC is also the SCR exhaust system optimized for airflow and back pressure.

The front and rear suspension links, as well as the hood and fenders are made from lightweight and tough aluminum alloy. Further weight reduction was achieved with the new acoustic front windshield, the magnesium transverse mount supporting the dashboard, the BlueTEC system with SCR technology and components such as the new electromechanical steering, electric parking brake, polymer engine mounts and the aluminum brake servo unit. These weight reduction measures increase the agility of the full-size SUV while at the same time reducing fuel consumption.

S-Class comfort with ground-breaking handling both on and off-road

Relaxed, safe driving under all possible conditions both on-road and off-road is one of the strengths of the new GL-Class. NVH characteristics (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) are particularly impressive and on par with the S-Class. The foundation for the high comfort level is the extremely stiff bodyshell, an optimized driveline, improved chassis, aeroacoustic refinement and the intelligent application of new kinds of insulation. Excellent agility, dynamic onroad handling and outstanding off-road capabilities have long been among the benefits of the GL-Class. Standard equipment includes the AIRMATIC full air suspension system with self-leveling function. AIRMATIC delivers outstanding comfort paired with considerably improved stability. It compensates for all manner of driving conditions with features such as crosswind stabilization and the self-leveling function. The optional Active Curve System works at the front and rear axles with active anti-roll bars to compensate for body roll during cornering, delivering a considerable boost to agility and driver involvement. Added stability, further improved comfort and enhanced off-road capabilities are further attributes of the Active Curve System.

The GL is also superbly equipped for trips off of the asphalt. In addition to 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, standard equipment includes a hill start assistant, and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR). The On- and Off-Road package, available as an option for the GL450 and GL550, enhances handling and safety with six programs, delivering optimum driveline control across the most diverse conditions on the road and on rugged terrain. On the hardware side, the On- and Off-Road package incorporates a skidplate, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gearing, a longitudinal differential lock and expanded AIRMATIC functions that deliver ground clearance of 12 inches and a wading depth of 23.6 inches.

Complete model lineup, compelling equipment packages

Extensive standard equipment, individual equipment packages and an attractive range of paint finishes and premium interior appointments define the look of the new GL-Class. It comes to the U.S. market in three model variants, the GL350 BlueTEC with a V6 diesel, the GL450 and GL550 V8 biturbo gasoline versions.

The comprehensive list of standard equipment has been significantly expanded in comparison with the previous model. It incorporates safety features such as ATTENTION ASSIST, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and Crosswind Stabilization. Comfort details like the power liftgate, an electric power/tilt sliding glass sunroof, MB-Tex upholstery with perforated surface finish and heated 8-way power front seats with driver 4-way lumbar support are also standard, as is the COMAND system with central controller.

Mercedes-Benz GLK, GL and SL 65 AMG Celebrate World Premiere

Mercedes-Benz ended the first quarter of 2012 with a sales record of 61,000 units in the US thanks to 3 new models

Mercedes-Benz broke its yearly sales record in 2011 and now Mercedes-Benz has ended the first quarter of 2012 with a new sales record of 61,000 units in the US.  The strong sales push, especially in the U.S. market, comes from three new Mercedes-Benz vehicles that celebrated their premiere at the Mercedes-Benz press conference at the 2012 New York International Auto Show.  Premiering today were the new generation of the GLK, the all-new GL-Class full-size SUV and the highly exclusive SL 65 AMG, the luxurious V12 high-performance roadster from Mercedes-AMG.

“We set a new SUV sales record in 2011 with around a quarter million units – despite the model change for the M-Class, which is particularly successful in North America. And we are staying in the fast lane – with the new generation of the GLK, our dynamic lifestyle SUV and with the all-new GL-Class, which offers even more comfort and safety combined with improved efficiency. With the two new SUVs and the new SL 65 AMG, we are showing what we mean with `the best or nothing`,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing.

“Thanks to record sales in the first quarter of 2012, Mercedes-Benz USA has been able to achieve its highest market share ever. Sales have risen by 24 percent in the last six months alone. With a host of attractive newcomers coming this year, all signs are pointing directly to success. This puts us on track to beat even last year’s record in the U.S.,” commented Stephen Cannon, CEO and President of Mercedes-Benz USA.

The new GL-Class – always first class

Comfort, safety, elegance, efficiency – the new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a clear leader in all key SUV disciplines. Active safety is enhanced by innovations like the standard crosswind stabilization, STEER CONTROL, self-leveling and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST (CPA). Also new are assistance systems like Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, or a parking package with automatic parking function and a 360° camera. With excellent performance and ride characteristics both on-road and in rugged terrain, the GL-Class cradles its occupants with the first-class comfort of a luxurious sedan. There is ample space for up to seven passengers. With that Mercedes-Benz continues the success story of the GL: its predecessor is number one in its class in the U.S..

Extensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures deliver significant efficiency improvements. The GL 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC consumes 7.4 liters of diesel fuel per one hundred kilometers, marking a 20 percent reduction compared with the previous model and undercutting future European emissions legislation laid out in the EU 6 standard. Fuel consumption for the GL 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with an output of 300 kW (408 hp) is down by 18 percent.

New generation of the GLK – the compact SUV for a modern lifestyle

With a new design, upgraded equipment level, groundbreaking assistance systems and power units that are as efficient as they are agile, the new generation of the GLK reaffirms its leading position within the compact SUV segment. The redesigned exterior lends greater dynamism to the GLK’s strong character. It combines the classic straight lines of an all-terrain vehicle with the design language of the current Mercedes-Benz sedans. Premium materials, new interior equipment and completely redesigned trim elements enhance the driving pleasure in the GLK, as do the new infotainment systems. The new GLK scores highly with a range of state-of-the-art assistance systems and comprehensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as the ECO start/stop function. The BlueTEC diesel exhaust after-treatment system is available for the compact SUV for the first time, enabling it already to fulfill the EU 6 exhaust standard. The GLK 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC generates 150 kW (204 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, thus offering the most powerful four-cylinder diesel engine in the SUV world. It consumes 6.1 – 6.5 l of diesel per 100 km (CO2 159-169 g/km).

New SL 65 AMG – refined, exclusive and stylish

Hot on the heels of the eight-cylinder range-topping SL 63 AMG, the V12 roadster joins the lineup of the Stuttgart automaker – enter the new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG: “The new SL 65 AMG combines the fascination of a breathtaking sports roadster and a luxurious high-performance coupe in an utterly unique way. I am certain that both will contribute to the continuation of the AMG success story on the U.S. market, where we were able to increase sales last year significantly.”

The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo generates a peak output of 463 kW (630 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,000 Newton meters. The result – exceptional performance, impressive power delivery and refined dynamics. Ola Källenius: “Our V12 is not only all about muscle flexing. Our V12 customers expect exclusive top performance and refined roadster driving fun at the very highest level.”

The all-aluminum body-in-white and further lightweight design measures deliver a significant weight reduction – the new SL 65 AMG is around 170 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The distinctive front end shows the new AMG brand look, which is dominated by the new “twin-blade” grille with two blade-shaped fins and the lower horizontal bar in the front skirt in high-gloss chrome.

Highly exclusive birthday edition – SL 65 AMG “45th ANNIVERSARY”

The special edition created for the 45th anniversary of AMG is limited to just 45 units. Its stunning enhancements include an exclusive matte-finish Exterior Carbon package. The horizontal bar in the front skirt, the exterior mirrors and the spoiler are made from genuine carbon and finished with a silk-matte surface treatment. The STYLE Exclusive designo leather upholstery is in titanium grey pearl/ginger beige.

Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class Revealed – Photos and Video

The Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class is set to make its world debut at both the 2011 New York Auto and Shanghai Auto Shows

The Mercedes-Benz Concept A-Class is scheduled to make its world debut at both the 2011 New York Auto Show and the Shanghai Auto Shows later this month. The Concept A-Class features an expressive and athletic design, with its long hood, low silhouette and slim side windows. It is given depth by the interplay between lines and surfaces. Inspiration for the A-Class Concept design is from the wind and the waves, as well as aviation engineering. Technical highlights include a new turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, a dual clutch transmission and a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist.

Complete information on the Concept A-Class is below, however, if you are short on time skip straight to the Concept A-Class design video.

The Concept A-Class previews a new compact class era at Mercedes-Benz. This front-wheel drive model is powered by a four-cylinder gasoline engine from the new M270 series. It was designed for transverse installation and thanks to direct injection and turbocharging, offers high performance together with minimal emissions and fuel consumption. The Concept A-Class is equipped with the twoliter variant of the new engine, developing 210 hp. This BlueEFFICIENCY engine is mated to the new Mercedes-Benz dual clutch transmission.

As a world first in the compact class, the concept car features a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rearend collisions. This assistance system gives a visual and acoustic warning to an inattentive driver and prepares Brake Assist for a precise braking response. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver forcefully operates the brake pedal.

Defined edges and a free interplay with the body surfaces

The exterior design of the Concept A-Class features the combination of defined edges and free interplay with the body surfaces that Mercedes-Benz first showed in the F800 Style. The side view is structured with three prominent lines: the front structural edge above the front fender forms a dropping line, while the prominent shoulder muscle above the rear axle underlines the car’s coupe-like character. A further line extends upwards from the rear wheel arch in a sweeping curve.

The front end of the Concept A-Class immediately catches the eye with the Mercedes- Benz star logo surrounded by what looks like a star-filled sky. Where there are usually openings or louvers, the radiator grille consists of numerous metallic silver hexagons on black stems. This theme is reflected in the design of the wheels. The headlights of the Concept A-Class continue this design element with innovative full-LED high-performance headlamps repeating the starry sky motif with numerous light points. The daytime running lamps consist of 90 optical fibers with aluminum sleeves which are arranged in a wing-shape within the headlamp.

In the interior, the eye is immediately drawn to the dashboard which has the shape of an aircraft wing and a translucent, stretchable fabric lining. This enables the bionic, cellular structure of the dashboard to remain visible.

The shape of the air vents in the dashboard is reminiscent of a jet aircraft. The prominent dials in the instrument cluster are in red, inspired by the afterburner of a jet engine. The center console is designed as a modern flight control panel, with the shift lever designed as a “reverse thrust control”.

A smartphone is fully integrated into the Concept A-Class. All functions are shown in the display as applications, and can be operated using the rotary/push control. The visual presentation of the display screen elements is unique, with a deep, three-dimensional appearance created by laser-like magenta-colored lines.

Mercedes-Benz at the 2010 New York International Auto Show: the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the redesigned 2011 R-Class at the New York International Auto Show, and we're there for the launch

The new generation of the R-Class now features an enhanced self-assured appearance, highlighting the unique personality of this versatile vehicle. The overall impression in particular has benefitted significantly from the completely redesigned front section, which borrows elements both from Mercedes-Benz saloons and SUV models. In addition to the fresh exterior, the “twenty-ten” model year R-Class also impresses with a number of distinctive interior features. These include the economy of space found in the latest MPV’s, as well as the comfort, high-class appeal and prestige associated with classic Mercedes-Benz saloons. At the same time, the latest generation offers the same level of interior diversity for which its predecessor was renowned, and also boasts the robustness and all-wheel-drive properties of Mercedes-Benz SUV’s. The R-Class will be celebrating its world premiere on 31 March 2010 at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

Engine line-up: economical drive systems

In addition to the modern petrol variants adopted from the preceding model, with their customary effortless power delivery and high drive comfort, a range of optimised diesel engines is now also available to enhance the appeal of the R-Class. With a fuel consumption figure of 7.6 l/100 km*, compared with its predecessor the R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model requires around 7 percent less fuel while offering the same power output and enhanced performance. The new R 350 CDI 4MATIC combines the high performance of a V8 model with the low fuel consumption of an economical V6 variant. It consumes 8.5 litres* of diesel per one hundred kilometres, thereby undercutting its predecessor by 0.8 litres – yet is able to offer significantly enhanced performance. While previously the maximum performance topped out at 165 kW (224 hp), the V6 diesel engine now boasts 195 kW (265 hp) as well as massive torque of 620 Newton metres. Making its debut in the R-Class, this powerful package enables the sportiest of all of the R-Class models with diesel engine to achieve effortlessly superior levels of performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.6 seconds, while the top speed is 235 km/h.

With the R 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz is offering one of the cleanest diesel models in the world. The V6 engine achieves an output of 155 kW (211 hp) and substantial torque of 540 Nm. Compared with its predecessor, this model also manages to achieve reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions while providing enhanced performance. Equipped with highly-effective AdBlue© emission control, the compression-ignition engine consumes an average of 0.3 of a litre less, at 8.4 litres* of diesel per one hundred kilometres, generating in the process the same level of emissions as a comparable petrol engine. As a result, this model currently already meets the emission values planned for 2014 according to the EU6 standard. All other petrol and diesel versions of the R-Class meet the EU5 standard.

Simply stunning: the design of the R-Class

The latest generation of the R-Class features a new, self-assured appearance. The overall impression is virtually seamless and encapsulates the unique personality of this highly versatile vehicle. The focus of the designers was the completely revised front section which, by emphasizing the width and making use of a horizontally structured bonnet, affords the entire vehicle a look which is as harmonious as it is powerfully dynamic. In addition to the bonnet, the vehicle’s wings, radiator grille and surround, headlamps and bumpers with chrome underguard have all been completely redesigned. As an optional extra, a chrome insert with integrated LED daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps is available to enhance the look of the R-Class even further.

The side view features coupé-like lines – a pleasant contrast to regular large-capacity vehicles – and is characterised by the modified exterior mirror housings and the wheel design. Wheels are available in 5-spoke, 5-twin spoke or 10-spoke designs, and in sizes ranging from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17 to 21 inches). The design idiom of the front is continued consistently through the rear area which, with its new bumper covering, modified tail lamps and integrated tailpipe trim, has also been given an accentuated wide look. The 2010 model year R-Class looks particularly refined in the new “diamond white” paint finish.

Wellness program: a relaxed environment both for longer journeys or everyday use

If there was a versatility test for car interiors, the R-Class would certainly be the favourite to take first place. A wide variety of options are available when it comes to seat variations in particular: designed for a relaxed, safe driving environment, the saloon offers five seats as standard in both the normal and long wheelbase versions, but four, six or even seven seat configurations are also possible. The R-Class comes with partially power-adjustable seats for driver and front passenger as standard, while as an option front passengers can also enjoy the luxury of actively ventilated and heated multicontour seats with full power adjustment and memory function.

The R-Class also reveals another benefit in the form of its large, versatile luggage compartment: in the standard-wheelbase versions the luggage compartment holds up to 1950 litres, while the long-wheelbase version boasts 2385 litres. In all five-seat variants there is a separate stowage compartment beneath the load compartment floor, while the optional EASY PACK tailgate which can operated remotely by means of a switch or key also makes access to the luggage compartment easier. As such the R-Class is the most variable and spacious vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car product range.

The bright, classic interior – which seems even more spacious when fitted with the optional panoramic glass sunroof – makes use of new materials and colour combinations which enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this unique long-distance saloon. At the same time they underline the sense of wellbeing which is typical of the Mercedes-Benz interior. Available interior appointments include the upholstery combination of “Aspen” fabric and breathable, soft-touch ARTICO man-made leather.

Two-tone interior appointments are a new addition to the range: this is where the base colour almond beige can be combined with the contrasting colour mocha brown. Alternatively, the base colour alpaca grey combined with contrasting dark basalt grey is also available. Both colour combinations are used on the dashboard, steering wheel, centre console, seats, door linings and floor coverings. When choosing ARTICO or leather appointments at the same time, the piping is finished in a contrasting colour. Single-tone nappa leather appointments are also available as standard in conjunction with the AMG Interior Sports package. In addition to aluminium trim with a dark longitudinal-grain and chrome trim in silver shadow, luxurious wood trim in high-gloss brown eucalyptus, high-gloss brown burred walnut or high-gloss anthracite poplar can also be ordered.

Model range: the R-Class with a personal touch

The nine basic variants already provide an opportunity to tailor the R-Class according to personal vehicle preferences in each case. All models boast numerous features as standard which help to make travelling both on long journeys as well as on short urban trips even safer and more relaxed. These features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-active NECK-PRO head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights. Safety is also enhanced thanks to high-performance telematics systems such as the Audio 20, Audio 50 APS or COMAND APS with an extremely user-friendly interface.

The THERMATIC automatic climate control system is fitted with a combination filter to hep further reduce pollutants which may be contained in the outside air entering the vehicle. As an optional extra, a THERMOTRONIC system providing separate rear air conditioning is available to meet all interior air conditioning requirements. The spacious glove compartment now comes with an AUX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment devices. Connection options can also be extended further with an optional Media Interface (UCI).

To complement the extensive standard equipment, the R-Class provides a variety of assistant systems which push ride comfort and safety to the highest level and contribute to the vehicle’s leading position in this market segment. These include DISTRONIC proximity control, AIRMATIC air suspension with the Adaptive

Damping System (ADS), or Blind Spot Assist, which can make changing lanes significantly safer. The modern LINGUATRONIC voice control system makes using the telematics systems even easier and more convenient, while a reversing camera provides for smooth, easy parking or manoeuvering in blind spots. As soon as the driver engages “R” gear, the image from the camera is shown on the high-resolution COMAND APS display. Rear passengers, meanwhile, can enjoy their own entertainment programme thanks to the Rear Seat Entertainment System. Seat heating can also be ordered for the second row of seats to increase comfort even further

in winter.

Valuation: neutral surveys confirm high resale opportunities

Experience shows that Mercedes-Benz models belong to the most stable vehicles on the market in terms of values and they therefore offer a significant financial advantage. This was confirmed once again last year by a neutral third-party when specialist magazine “Auto Bild” selected the “2010 Value Champions” in different vehicle categories based on surveys conducted by Saarbrücken-based market research institute Bähr & Fess Forecast. The “Value Champion” among MPV’s, the R 300 CDI, emerged ahead of the field in this market segment and according to the forecasts would retain a value of 47.5 percent after four years. The R-Class already held this leading position in the expert analysis of residual values last year.

2010 R-Class: model range and appointment variants*

Diverse, comfortable and fully equipped:  the new R-Class enhances the merits of this unique vehicle category even further. In addition to the fresh exterior, the “twenty-ten” model year R-Class also impresses with a number of interior features in particular. These include the economy of space found in the latest MPV’s, and the comfort, high-class appeal and prestige of the S‑Class. At the same time, this latest generation offers the superior interior diversity for which its predecessor was renowned, and also boasts the robustness and all-wheel-drive properties of Mercedes-Benz SUV’s.

With a total of 9 base versions, the R-Class provides the most comprehensive model range in the premium long-distance saloon segment. Together with the significantly more appealing body design, the complete range of standard equipment and the numerous individualisation options, the R-Class can be tailored specifically to meet individual requirements. It also offers a high degree of variability, standard or long wheelbases, 4MATIC rear or permanent all-wheel drive, and high-performance yet economical engines, which in some cases come with BlueTEC or BlueEFFICIENCY technology – if there was such a thing as a vehicle versatility test, then the R-Class would certainly be the favourite to take first place.

Mercedes-Benz at the 2010 New York International Auto Show: the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

On display at the New York Auto Show was the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3, and we've got an unparalleled look at the model

If you ever talk to an automotive journalist and they tell you they have a difficult job, they’re completely and utterly lying.  Looking at beautiful cars and writing about them is about as easy as it gets.  Take today for example.  I woke up on the 21st floor of the magnificent Four Seasons New York hotel.  After an incredible breakfast overlooking the city, I ventured out to the New York International Auto Show, checked in, and ten minutes later, was listening to AMG director Volker Mornhinweg tell me about the new SLS AMG GT3.  When he was finished, I had a quick chat with the gold-winning U.S. bobsled team, took a few pictures, talked to some people I’ve never met before, was feeling a bit hungry, took a trip to the Carnegie Deli, had a gargantuan $25 reuben, and am now back in my hotel, writing to you about my exploits.  If that sounds like a difficult job, it isn’t.  In fact, I’m sitting here right now questioning whether or not it’s really a job at all.  Digging a ditch, washing dishes – these are jobs.  But what I’m doing, this isn’t a job, it’s like I’m getting paid to do what everyone else pays to do.

Why am I telling you this?  Two reasons, really.  It’s because of you and because you read the website that we’re able to do what we do, so first and foremost, from the bottom of our hearts, we wanted to thank you for reading and allowing us to partake in such incredible journeys.  Secondly, I have to admit, as great as my job is, it saddens me you couldn’t be here.  I’ve weighed the possibilities as to how to remedy the situation, but despite my spacious accomodations, you wont’ all fit.  Instead, I decided to do the best thing I could think of.  I took an absurd amount of photos of the SLS AMG GT3 from the show, so even though you couldn’t be here and see it in person, you’ll still get an unparalleled look at the model.  I know it’s not quite the same as a trip to NYC, but hopefully it provides a small glimpse of how much we appreciate you.

You can view the complete photo collection of the new Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 in the gallery below, and again, we sincerely thank each and every one of you for reading.

Mercedes-Benz at the 2010 New York International Auto Show: Live on Stage

We're in New York City to give you a firsthand look on stage at Mercedes' 2011 R-Class and SLS AMG GT3 launches

As you know, today kicked off the first day of the 2010 New York International Auto Show, and we’re here to give you a firsthand view of the new models making their debut at the show – the race-ready Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 along with the recently unveiled 2011 Mercedes R-Class.  I won’t go into model specifics, as we’ve got plenty of technical data coming up that will discuss at length what you can expect from both, so instead we’ll kick things off with a look on-stage during the event.  Presenters included Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz; Ernst Lieb, President & CEO Mercedes-Benz USA; and Volker Mornhinweg, currently managing director of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

There’s a wealth of photos covering the full launch of each vehicle; the main things worth noting that are that the standard Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing is going to see a U.S. market launch of May 10th, with pricing starting at $183,000.  There were general details of given of each model (which we’ll cover in coming press releases), and lastly, you’ll notice that when the 2011 R-Class made its debut on stage, it was accompanied by the U.S. gold-medal winning “Night Train” bobsled team of Curt Tomasevicz, Steve Mesler, Justin Olsen, Steven Holcomb (all of whom are even more cool and bad-ass as they looked in Vancouver).

Aside from the aforementioned details, nothing was revealed that you don’t already know, so check out the photos for a lengthy view of Mercedes’ SLS AMG GT3 and 2011 R-Class premiers.  Also, this is just the first round of photos from the 2010 New York International Auto Show – we’ve got a multitude of photos we’re currently processing showing the R-Class and SLS GT3 from every angle we could possibly get, so keep checking back for updates throughout the day.
