What Would an AMG GT Bike Look Like

A mountain bike inspired by the new Mercedes‑AMG GT has been developed for the toughest off-road conditions

A mountain bike inspired by the new Mercedes‑AMG GT has been developed for the toughest off-road conditions on the basis of professional feedback from the top athletes in the AMG ROTWILD MTB racing team. The ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG combines the very best of racing technology on four and two wheels: dynamism, lightweight construction, design and comfort. The special model limited to 100 examples combines ultra high-performance materials with highly sophisticated suspension technology and a unique design idiom. Even during the development stage the ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG demonstrated its remarkable qualities with a world championship title for the juniors.

The ROTWILD GT S

The ROTWILD GT S

The ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG is already the second mountain bike to be jointly presented by Mercedes-AMG and Rotwild. The full-suspension R.X45 AMG carbon-fibre mountain bike entered the market in 2013. With the ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG, the sports car and performance brand within Mercedes-Benz and the internationally renowned manufacturer of high-end mountain bikes are now setting new standards for high-performance mountain bikes. Specifically developed for sporting competitions, all the components meet the highest racing requirements. According to Rotwild general manager Peter Schlitt: “Just as AMG, we have paid very particular attention to the ride dynamics and fitted only the best technology for the ROTWILD GT S. As a result ride enjoyment lives up to expectations, even under the harshest of conditions.” Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG: “The mixture of bike racing, an unmistakable design and German engineering expertise is the connecting link between AMG and Rotwild. Our shared passion for high-performance products will continue to inspire our partnership in the future.”

High-end on two wheels: the ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG

Thanks to new technologies specifically developed by Rotwild and top-quality components, the ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG impresses in every aspect. The frame was systematically designed with light weight and suspension comfort in mind. High-tech such as Carbon Module Monocoque Technology (MMT2) and EPS Innermold Technology is used, optimising the performance and attributes of the high-modulus carbon fibre. The result is an ultra-lightweight frame with optimum rigidity and ideal damping characteristics. The Formula 33 Factory front fork likewise combines light weight with high rigidity, contributing to consistent riding comfort with adjustable compression and rebound. The effect is completed by 29‑inch carbon-fibre wheels whose unique design keeps the rotating masses as low as possible. Centring the masses around the wheel hub allows fast acceleration and braking.

The mountain bike is equipped with Shimano XTR drive technology actuated by electronic gearshifting. This features a multi-shift function and allows several gears to be shifted in sequence. This individually adjustable function ensures an efficient power transfer, short operating movements and reliable, fast and smooth gearshifts. The brakes were also developed for sporting competition. Weighing only 267 grams, the hydraulic Formula AMG R1 Racing FCS disc brake is among the lightest on the market.

However, “Inspired by AMG” not only applies with respect to the technology of the ROTWILD GT S, but also to its expressive design. The paintwork is in distinctive, contrasting solarbeam and carbon black, and is inspired by the Mercedes-AMG GT. Every detail of the mountain bike stands for sheer sportiness and dedication. The ROTWILD GT S inspired by AMG will enter the market together with an attractive, high-quality equipment package in May 2015. This contains everything the dedicated mountain biker requires: from a transport bag and a damper setup pump to the most important repair tools. From May, this hand-built carbon-fibre bike will be available as a limited edition of 100 examples from the ROTWILD sales organisation at a price of €9990.

What Happens When you Combine AMG and Bicycles

Together, Mercedes-AMG and Rotwild offered the full-suspension "R.X45 AMG" carbon-fibre bike reminiscent of the Mercedes A45 AMG "Edition 1"

AMG, the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz, and Rotwild, the internationally renowned manufacturer of high-end mountainbikes, are intensifying their cooperation. The mountainbike professionals of the Rotwild team are entering the 2014 mountainbike season with AMG as a new name-giving sponsor. During a team presentation in Affalterbach, AMG general manager Tobias Moers and Rotwild general manager Peter Schlitt introduced the new AMG Rotwild MTB racing team.

Intensive cooperation between the two high-performance brands already commenced last year: to mark their partnership, Mercedes-AMG and Rotwild offered the full-suspension “R.X45 AMG” carbon-fibre bike whose appearance and style was reminiscent of the “Edition 1” variant of the Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG. This mixture of race technology, unmistakable design and German engineering expertise is also the connecting link between AMG and Rotwild for future projects. Following this first successful project, the two German high-end brands are now going a step further with the presentation of a joint professional mountainbike team.

“Our brand was born on the racetrack – and to this day, our commitment to racing is of central importance to Mercedes-AMG,” said Tobias Moers, general manager of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, during the presentation of the new racing team. “In Rotwild we have found a partner with whom we can also intensify this commitment in the sport of cycle racing. We are therefore looking forward to the coming season with Rotwild, and have our fingers crossed for our joint team in the hope that they will be just as successful on two wheels as our racing cars are on four.” Peter Schlitt, general manager of Rotwild, added: “AMG and Rotwild stand for top performance and efficiency – hand-made in Germany. In the past both premium brands have set standards in their sectors with respect to technical innovations and sporting success. This strong partnership will make us even more of a force to reckon with. We are looking forward to an exciting season, and wish the riders the best of luck.”

The AMG Rotwild MTB racing team

The AMG Rotwild MTB racing team works together with the top brands in the biking sector. Each partner is dedicated to racing, engineering and performance. The mobility needs of the team are also amply catered for. Apart from on their Rotwild R2 racing bikes, the athletes also show a sporty presence on the road with their Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG.

The team consists of the two U23 riders Lukas Baum and Sofia Wiedenroth, and the elite lady rider Nadine Rieder. In the coming season these three will take to the starting line wearing the livery of the new AMG Rotwild MTB racing team. Apart from the UCI MTD Worldcup, the programme of events includes the national and international championships, the German MTB league championship and major European bike festivals. The highlights of the season are the German Worldcup race in Albstadt, the European championship in St. Wendel and the world championships in Hafjell, Norway (1 to 6 September 2014). Following their major successes in the last season, Lukas Baum and Sofia Wiedenroth intend to establish themselves in the U23 class this year. In 2013 Nadine Rieder was the fastest German lady sprinter. Her focus for the coming season is clear: precious metal in the short-distance events and placings in the World Cup.

2013 was one of the most successful seasons in the 18-year racing history of the German high-end brand Rotwild. Lukas Baum became junior world and European champion. He also won the gold in the German championship. His team colleague Sofia Wiedenroth triumphed with gold and silver in the German and European championships, and fourth place in the world championship.

The team is completed by the Canadian Richie Schley. He is a Rotwild brand ambassador, and is regarded as one of the world’s best freeriders. As a founder of the freeriding movement, he will demonstrate his versatility during selected European endurance races.

A portrait: the riders in the team

Lukas Baum

As a junior in the 2013 season, Lukas Baum was the most successful German mountainbiker. With his triple championship wins – gold in the German championships, the European championships and, to crown it all, the world championship, he celebrated the perfect season with his team colleagues. Following the change to the U23 class, Lukas plans to establish himself here in the coming season and immediately take the offensive. Team manager Danny Herz is quietly confident: “Lukas will not be content to stay with the pack, he always has a surprise in store.” In the World Cup Lukas Baum has his eyes on the Top 10, and on the rostrum for the German championship. The highlight of the season will then be the European championships in St. Wendel, Saarland.

  • Name Lukas Baum, born on 28 February 1995, Speyer
  • Resident in Neustadt/Weinstrasse
  • Coach Wolfram Kurschat
  • Club RSC Neustadt

Sofia Wiedenroth

European lady vice-champion and multiple German champion: Sofia’s track record becomes more impressive from year to year. Team manager Danny Herz is enthusiastic: “Sofia’s strength is her riding technique.” Fast bends, blocked stretches or jumps – Sofia has them under control. When preparing for the new season she developed a knee problem, therefore she has added new training routines. She has ambitious plans for the new racing class: achieving the Top 15 in the U23 class is a possibility. The planning for the season is aimed at good results in the world championships in September 2014.

  • Name Sofia Wiedenroth, born on 30 January 1995, Augsburg
  • Resident in Niederstaufen, near Lindau on Lake Constance
  • Coaches Rolf Frey, Peter Schaupp
  • Club TSV Niederstaufen

Nadine Rieder

Nadine Rieder particularly excelled in the sprint in 2013. As the fastest German lady rider, she only failed to achieve a podium position by a hair’s breadth in the world championship. She also produced good results in the marathon, however. To develop her strengths even further, multi-talented Nadine trains on skis, in the weights gym, on a dirtbike and with a freerider. Her focus for the 2014 season is on sprinting and cross-country. Her goal is clear: a world championship medal.

The racing bike of the AMG Rotwild MTB racing team

The AMG Rotwild MTB racing team is placing its confidence in the R.R2 HT 29 for the 2014 season. The frame of the ROTWILD 29 race hardtail is based on the high-performance carbon-fibre technology MMT2 – an in-house development by Rotwild. In this modular monocoque construction, the frame is laminated section by section using carbon-fibre modules. The result is an extremely resilient frame designed specifically for racing. The R2 translates the performance ideal to the racetrack. For more power transfer in a race the pedal crank is of maximum rigidity, while the special shape of the handlebar optimises steering precision on technically demanding stretches. Thanks to uncompromising engineering and systematic attention to performance, the R.R2 HT 29 is considerably more than the sum of its parts.

The bike’s list of features also guarantees acceleration and reliability: the Shimano XTR race components combine high-quality materials such as magnesium, carbon-fibre, titanium and aluminium. The suspension and wheels are supplied by the engineers at DT Swiss, and the bikes of the AMG Rotwild MTB racing team are equipped with a specially configured Custom Team suspension fork. Traction, ground adhesion and speed even under difficult conditions are ensured by Continental Race King tyres with a special Race Sport mixture.

Mercedes-Benz Collection: the highest quality standards

“The best or nothing” promise clearly carries through to the products in the Mercedes-Benz Collection. All items have been specifically designed, developed and produced for Mercedes-Benz. Ideas scribbled on a notepad are worked up into detailed sketches and later translated into precise technical drawings. These provide the basis for making prototypes. The next step involves evaluating the proportions, functionality and material selection in order to satisfy the demanding requirements of Mercedes-Benz.

True to its commitment to superb quality, Mercedes-Benz also has the products in the Mercedes-Benz Collection and their raw materials and components tested by the specialists at the independent SGS Institut Fresenius product testing centre. Over the course of numerous laboratory and safety tests, the products have to meet tough test criteria that far exceed the requirements laid down by law. It is only once testing has been completed successfully that the product can be put into production.

smart ebike wins Best of the Best Red Dot Design Award

As a pedal electric cycle, the smart ebike is a hybrid with an electric motor that switches on as soon as the rider starts pedaling

Outstanding recognition and the highest praise for the design: the smart ebike is one of the winners of this year’s “Red Dot Design Award”. The first models are being successively delivered from the end of April/beginning of May 2012. The first owners will be the numerous customers who have taken advantage of the possibility to reserve an ebike since November 2011.

The 30-man jury of the prestigious “Red Dot Design Award” judged more than 4500 products from 58 countries and awarded the smart ebike the “red dot: best of the best” prize for top design quality. The award ceremony will be held on 2 July 2012 in Essen. “We are delighted that the consistent and innovative design of the ebike with its unmistakable smart signature has received this prestigious award”, says smart boss Dr. Annette Winkler. “In just a few weeks time our unique smart on two wheels will start conquering cities and cycle paths around the world.”

With an unconventional design in line with the style of the brand, functions appropriate for city use and high technology standards that are demonstrated by the extremely efficient and high-performance drive package among other features, the smart ebike has an exceptional position. It will initially be available in two colour variants: in crystal white with electric green accents and in dark grey matt with flame orange accents. Prices in Germany will start at 2,849 euros (including 19% VAT).

High-quality components guarantee dynamic, safe and fun cycling. For example, hydraulic disc brakes from Magura are fitted at the front and rear. Standard features also include LED light with a daytime running light function and 26″ wheels – both in the smart ebike design. The ebike is fitted with Continental EcoContact Plus tyres. Thanks to additional strengthening they are particularly puncture-resistant. The drive is also of a very high quality with a completely maintenance- and oil-free carbon toothed belt instead of a conventional bicycle chain.

The smart ebike also features state-of-the-art infotainment: a USB port comes as standard and enables various accessories and add-on devices to be supplied with electricity. Among other things the smart ebike can be individualised with a versatile smartphone holder for mobile end devices, a comfort bar and a luggage rack with integrated net pockets. With the help of an iPhone app specially developed for the smart ebike the smartphone becomes an information centre. A trendy smart ebike collection is also available: developed in cooperation with Mercedes Benz Accessories GmbH it includes a helmet and bags featuring the smart design. The smart ebike collection is also available from smart contractual partners.

Efficient and powerful electric drive

smart’s high technological standards are also manifested in the efficient and high-performance drive package. As a pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) the smart ebike is strictly speaking a hybrid: the electric motor – a maintenance-free rear-wheel hub motor from BionX – switches on as soon as the rider starts pedaling, as with a normal bicycle. Muscle power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a lubricant-free, durable and quiet belt drive. An integrated three-speed gear hub enables simple gear changing.

The rider of the smart ebike decides how much power he wants the electric motor to deliver to support his muscle power by pressing a button on the handlebar. There is a choice of four power levels with the fourth level providing maximum pushing power. Depending on the power level selected and the manner of cycling a battery charge can last for up to 100 kilometres.

With 423 Wh the lithium-ion battery is one of the most powerful batteries in the competitive environment. It has been attractively integrated in the frame of the smart ebike. The portable battery can be charged either at a normal socket or whilst riding, with the latter offering advantages in terms of cost and the environment. The wheel hub motor becomes as a generator when the rider brakes. The braking energy is recuperated, i.e. it is converted into electrical energy and stored in the smart ebike’s lithium-ion battery.

Simple operation and highly functional

Straightforward operation, a low weight, excellent ergonomics and a practical stowage space concept all contribute to making the smart ebike fun to ride. As a pedelec the smart ebike combines the comfort of a motorised two-wheeler with the easy handling of a bicycle.

In EU countries neither a driving licence nor a licence plate are required as the electric motor of a pedelec only assists propulsion up to a speed of 25 km/h.

Expert partner from the two-wheeler industry

The smart ebike was designed and developed by smart and it is being produced in close cooperation with the e-bike manufacturer Grace. This ensures that the smart ebike is produced in premium quality. The smart ebike will be sold by smart dealers in the respective markets. The ebike can then also be serviced by any smart dealer or bicycle specialist.
