Mercedes-AMG EQE – Everything You Need to Know

Both new Mercedes-AMG EQE models offer a performance-oriented drive concept with two electric motors

“With two new models, we are expanding our range with purely electrically powered performance vehicles and are thus addressing additional target groups. The EQE 43 4MATIC is the entry-level model for electric Driving Performance from Mercedes-AMG. The EQE 53 4MATIC+, on the other hand, focuses on even more sportiness and greater driving dynamics. And that’s not the end of our Future of Driving Performance: After performance hybrids and all-electric AMG derivatives based on EVA2, stand-alone AMG electric vehicles will follow in the not too distant future. These are based on AMG.EA, our new, completely in-house-developed platform,” says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“The compact format of the EQE forms the perfect starting point for realising a highly agile and very emotional driving experience with our AMG-specific solutions. This applies in particular to the areas of drive, chassis, brakes and, above all, sound. This ensures that our customers can also look forward to our brand’s hallmark Driving Performance in our second all-electric model series,” says Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Both new Mercedes-AMG EQE models offer a performance-oriented drive concept with two electric motors. The powerful electric drivetrain (eATS), with a motor on each of the axles, also offers fully variable all-wheel drive, which optimally transmits the drive power to the asphalt under all driving conditions. The power spectrum ranges from 350 kW (476 hp) in the EQE 43 4MATIC to 505 kW (687 hp) in the EQE 53 4MATIC+ with optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package and boost function. The maximum torque ranges from 858 to 1000 Nm.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: emotional sound spectrum for a unique driving experience

Mercedes-AMG models have always stood for emotionality. The vehicle sound has always been an important part of the hallmark AMG driving experience – even for all-electric AMG Performance vehicles. The sound system creates a unique sound experience with the help of special speakers, bass actuator and a sound generator. There are the “Authentic” and optional “Performance” programs (only EQE 53 with AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package). Both are available in three variants each: “Balanced”, “Sport” and “Powerful”. The tonality and intensity of this exclusive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is tuned to the current driving status, the selected drive program or the driver’s wishes, both inside and out.

AMG-specific electric motors for perfectly balanced Driving Performance

The AMG-specific electric motors at the front and rear axles are permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM). The decided emphasis on performance is already evident in the output and torque values. In addition, the electric motors are characterised by an optimal balance of power increase, efficiency and noise comfort. The electric motors of the EQE 43 4MATIC feature AMG-specific tuning and control. The EQE 53 4MATIC+ uses AMG-specific electric motors with adapted windings and laminations, higher currents and a specific inverter. This enables higher engine speeds and even more power, which is particularly noticeable during acceleration and at top speed.

The electric motor on the rear axle is particularly powerful thanks to its six-phase design, based on two windings with three phases each. The stator with pull-in winding ensures a particularly strong magnetic field.

Added to this is the highly resilient thermal concept, which allows repeated acceleration manoeuvres with consistently high performance. The centrepiece of the sophisticated design is the so-called water lance in the shaft of the rotor, which cools it. Other AMG-specific cooling elements in the cooling circuit include special ribs on the stator and the needle-shaped pin-fin structure on the inverter, which is made of high-performance ceramics. In addition, there is the transmission oil heat exchanger: In addition to cooling, the oil is also preheated during cold starts to increase efficiency

New battery generation with a capacity of 90.6 kWh

The new Mercedes-AMG EQE models are equipped with a powerful 328-volt high-performance drive battery manufactured using the latest lithium-ion technology. It has a usable energy content of 90.6 kWh and consists of ten modules with a total of 360 pouch cells. The battery management system in the EQE 53 is also tuned specifically for AMG. In the Sport and Sport+ drive programs the focus is on performance, in the Comfort drive program the focus is on operating range. The battery generation is characterised by a high energy density and has a high charging capacity. Another new feature is the possibility to install updates for the battery management system over-the-air for continuous improvements over the life cycle. The EQE 53 4MATIC+ also features an AMG-specific wiring harness adapted to the higher performance capability. A major advance in sustainability has been achieved in the cell chemistry: the cobalt content is reduced to ten percent. The optimised active material consists of nickel, cobalt and manganese in a ratio of 8:1:1.

Short charging times through intelligent thermal management

Another advantage of the new battery generation is the short charging times. The energy storage system can charge with up to 170 kW at fast charging stations with direct current. In this case, electricity for 180 kilometres (WLTP) can be recharged in just 15 minutes[3]. Thanks to the onboard charger, the electrified AMG can be conveniently charged at home or at public charging stations with 11 kW or optionally 22 kW with alternating current. In Japan, bidirectional charging will also be possible, i.e. charging in both directions. In addition, there are intelligent charging programs that can be activated automatically depending on the location. Functions such as battery-saving charging make operations even more efficient.

The efficient thermal management also plays a part in shortening charging times. If Navigation with Electric Intelligence is activated, the battery is preheated or cooled while driving to reach the optimal temperature for fast charging at the charging point. The desired temperature range of the battery is achieved with the aid of the cooling circuit and a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) booster heater integrated into it.

The battery design aims to ensure the optimum battery operating temperature under all operating conditions. The aluminium extrusions of the battery frame have defined cavities through which the coolant flows. All in all, the intelligent temperature and charging management ensures that high charging currents can be maintained for a long time.

The battery also stands out for its durability. The ECO Charging function makes a significant contribution to this: the intelligent control reduces the battery load during charging, and thus slows down the natural ageing process of the battery. Customers can also benefit from “charging interruption” function: the charging process can be paused at freely selectable times so as to use cheaper off-peak electricity at a later time, for example. The battery certificate stands for the long service life of the high-voltage batteries. It is valid for up to ten years or up to 250,000 kilometres.

Intelligent recuperation for efficient energy recovery

The battery can also be charged through efficient energy recovery using recuperation. The recuperation power reaches up to 260 kW[4]. The driver can adjust the level of recuperation in three stages via switches on the steering wheel, and receive situation-optimised support from ECO Assist. Here, one-pedal driving and combined braking to a standstill are possible in recuperation levels D and D-. In DAuto, up to 5 m/s² deceleration is achieved, 3 m/s² of which is due to recuperation (2 m/s² via the AMG high-performance brake system). With the help of the optional DRIVE PILOT, deceleration to detected vehicles ahead is automatic until they come to a standstill, for example at traffic lights.

Fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC and 4MATIC+

The power of the engines is brought to the road by the standard-fit AMG Performance 4MATIC (EQE 43) or 4MATIC+ (EQE 53) fully variable all-wheel drive. In contrast to previous usage, the “+” in 4MATIC+ stands not only for the fully variable all-wheel drive that EQE 43 and EQE 53 both have, but for the entire additional performance and dynamism that the EQE 53 offers. In both models, the system continuously distributes drive torque between the front and rear axles depending on the driving situation: compared to a mechanical all‑wheel drive system, the electric-specific system ensures a significantly faster response. The torque is checked 160 times per second and adjusted if necessary. The torque distribution depends on the selected drive program: in “Comfort” mode the focus is on maximum efficiency, while in “Sport” and “Sport+” the torque is more rear-biased in the interests of greater lateral dynamics.

AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping

The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive adjustable damping is based on a four-link front axle and multilink rear suspension. Both are optimised with AMG-specific wheel carriers, suspension links and anti-roll bars with higher rigidity. It corresponds in its basic features to the suspension of the AMG EQS and the AMG GT Four-Door Coupé, but its set-up has been adapted to the AMG EQE. The rear axle carrier is connected to the body shell with 50 per cent stiffer bearings and reduced bearing clearance to create even more direct road contact. The AMG engineers have specifically tuned all components to meet the special requirements of AMG customers. This applies to ride comfort as well as driving dynamics.

The adaptive adjustable damping uses two so-called pressure limiting valves. These continuously variable control valves located outside the damper allow the damping force to be adjusted even more precisely to different driving conditions and drive programs: one valve controls the rebound phase, i.e. the force generated when the wheel rebounds; the other controls the compression phase when the wheel compresses. The rebound and compression phases are controlled independently of each other. This technology makes it possible to increase comfort on the one hand, but also to make the driving dynamics even sportier on the other hand.

The suspension control unit analyses data – including data from the acceleration and wheel path sensors – to adjust the damping force for each wheel in a few milliseconds to suit the situation. The AMG developers were able to significantly increase the spread between sportiness and comfort. Among other things, by widening the spread between minimum and maximum damping force characteristics, as well as even greater flexibility in characteristic mapping. By using the two adjustment valves, the damper is able to provide damping force adjustment across the full range of wheel vibrations. Thanks to the special design of the valves, the damper reacts quickly and sensitively to changing road surfaces and driving conditions.

Efficiency also feeds into the intelligent driving level control, which enables better aerodynamics and lower power consumption. In the S and S+ drive programs, the Mercedes-AMG EQE models already drive at the low level (-15 mm) from 0 km/h. In drive program C, speed-dependent control takes place with lowering from 120 km/h and raising from 80 km/h.

The high driving dynamics potential is also enhanced by the special tyres, which are specifically adapted to the requirements of the all-electric AMG Performance vehicles, including the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV designed for sports cars with electric drive.

Rear axle steering as standard

Both Mercedes-AMG EQE models are equipped with rear axle steering as standard. The steering angle of up to 3.6 degrees promotes agile handling. The interaction between front axle and rear axle steering is designed to achieve agile response with little steering effort when driving in town or on country roads. At speeds below 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels. This makes the Mercedes‑AMG EQE manoeuvrable, light-footed and nimble. The effect is particularly positive when making a turn, changing direction quickly and manoeuvring slowly. At speeds above 60 km/h, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels. The resulting virtually extended wheelbase offers increased handling stability and driving safety at high speeds, and during fast lane changes or sudden evasive manoeuvres.

For an individual driving experience: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs

The driving characteristics can be changed by the driver at the touch of a button to suit the situation or their own preferences. This is made possible by the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual”. The programs cover a broad spectrum from high comfort to pronounced sportiness. Important parameters such as drive and performance characteristics, suspension settings, AMG DYNAMICS with, among other things, steering torque characteristics, and AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE are included in the selected drive program accordingly. The maximum drive power can be called up in the Sport+ drive program, or in all drive programs via kick-down. In the other drive programs (except Sport+), the maximum power is adjusted to increase efficiency and reduce consumption.

The driver can also pre-select the basic suspension setup via the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs: at the touch of a button, the driving style varies from maximum dynamics in “Sport+” mode to smooth gliding in the “Comfort” setting, for example. In addition, the tuning can be adjusted in three stages independently of the drive programs via a dedicated button.

Depending on the drive program, the central drive control unit automatically activates different de-rating and cooling strategies: in “Sport” and “Sport+”, the cooling system is activated sooner and the cooling capacity is increased to maintain delivered power for longer. The driver has the option of even more driving pleasure – for example on dedicated race tracks – by using the ESP OFF function.

AMG high-performance brake system

The AMG high-performance brake system with six-piston brake callipers and 415×33 millimetre brake discs on the front axle delivers first-class deceleration values with high resistance to fading and excellent durability. The rear axle has single-piston brake callipers and 378×22 millimetre brake discs. The optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system uses even larger brake discs measuring 440×40 millimetres at the front (only in conjunction with 21-inch wheels). Another high-tech feature is the intelligent i-Booster brake booster. It ensures that the brake system combines electric recuperation with the hydraulic brake highly efficiently. For that really authentic driving experience, the i-Booster is specially tuned to the characteristic AMG pedal feel and the AMG brake system.

AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE: unique sound experience with a wide bandwidth

With the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE, the performance and sports car brand is giving a new voice to electric mobility – a soundtrack for outside and inside that emotionally enhances the dynamic driving experience. Like the drive programs, the acoustic composition has a wide bandwidth: in the standard basic version “Authentic”, the customer can regulate the sound and its intensity depending on the driving status and the selected drive program. The hallmark AMG driving sounds are generated with the help of additional hardware, including special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator.

Another option for even more individuality: using the AMG steering wheel buttons or the central display, the driver can select the sound characteristics “Balanced”, “Sport” and “Powerful” in any drive program. During RACE START, the vehicle produces a unique sound to match the dynamic acceleration.

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package also includes the AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE “Performance”, which creates an even more emotional soundscape, also optionally “Balanced”, “Sport” or “Powerful”. In addition to the drive sounds, it also includes most of the so-called event sounds – suitable sounds for all vehicle functions that emit a sound. This includes locking the vehicle, as well as starting and stopping the motor. The program even simulates the click of the indicators, because many drivers are unwilling to do without the familiar sound. A brand new feature is the AMG-specific event sound that is heard when the vehicle is locked. The event sounds can be deactivated at any time via the multimedia system settings – separately for the exterior and interior.

Exterior design with characteristic AMG features

With its one-bow lines and cab-forward design with fastback, the new Mercedes-AMG EQE models are clearly distinguishable from vehicles with combustion engines. The design philosophy is reflected in generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The exterior design also picks up on characteristic AMG elements.

The AMG-specific black panel grille with hot-stamped vertical struts in chrome, integrated Mercedes star and “AMG” lettering characterises the front view. The standard DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps feature a specific AMG projection when opening and closing the vehicle. The distinctive design idiom continues in the front bumper, which is painted in the vehicle colour. This is contrasted by the front apron in the typical AMG A-wing design, which is painted in high-gloss black and features chrome trim. The same look characterises the front splitter in high-gloss black with chrome trim and flics and fins on the optical air intakes. In addition, there are air diffusers on the left and right in high-gloss black for the so-called AIR CURTAIN effect. AMG side sill panels in high-gloss black, the rear apron in the vehicle colour with an aerodynamically optimised diffuser, and the larger rear spoiler round off the dynamic appearance. The measures improve the driving dynamics and efficiency: rear lift is reduced without significantly changing drag. All AMG light-alloy wheels are aerodynamically optimised.

Interior design with a particularly sporty touch

The interior is also dominated by style-defining AMG features. Here the new models offer a sporty ambience, including AMG seats with individual graphics and special seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfibre and red decorative topstitching. Alternatively, seat upholstery in nappa leather is optionally available, also with AMG-specific seat graphics. In addition, there are AMG badges on the backrests of the front seats and embossed AMG emblems in the front head restraints.

Numerous other details underline the independent style of the interior:

  • Instrument panel and beltlines in space grey ARTICO man-made leather with NEOTEX grain and red topstitching
  • Door centre panels and also transition from centre console to instrument panel in black MICROCUT microfibre with red topstitching
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather, with flattened lower section, perforated in the grip area with silver-coloured aluminium paddles for setting various recuperation levels, in addition to standard AMG steering wheel buttons
  • AMG sports pedals, AMG floor mats and door sill trims with AMG lettering (illuminated with exchangeable cover)

The AMG Performance steering wheel with its striking twin-spoke design and seamlessly integrated buttons combines visual stability with lightness. The steering wheel rim, which is flattened at the bottom and covered in nappa leather, can be heated as an option. The standard AMG steering wheel buttons impress with brilliant displays. This allows important driving functions and the drive programs to be controlled without having to take your hands off the steering wheel. Numerous parameters can be selected directly. The menus on the left steering wheel button can be individually supplemented, exchanged or reduced. For this, there is a list in the Multimedia Touch Display or in the optional Hyperscreen with more than 15 information and setting options as direct selection for the steering wheel buttons.

Optional Hyperscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays for the MBUX infotainment system

Both new models can be optionally equipped with the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen. This large, curved screen unit extends from A-pillar to A-pillar. Three screens sit under a glass cover and appear to merge into one. With adaptive software, MBUX adapts completely to its user and offers personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the so-called zero layer, the most important applications are always displayed situationally and contextually on the top level in the field of vision.

In Europe and China, dynamic content is also permitted on the passenger display while driving. Unrestricted viewing of films, text messages or presentations, plus internet surfing, are therefore possible. The so-called “blanking function” prevents the driver from being disturbed by the displayed content. But even without dynamic content, the passenger display remains an attractive eye-catcher with a new AMG-specific screensaver.

MBUX offers a range of additional AMG functions that emphasise the performance character. This is particularly true of the distinctive displays in the instrument cluster, as well as the multimedia display and the head-up display. Quick access to the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs is provided by the corresponding direct-entry button in the centre console.

AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package with dynamic driving extras

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, available as an option for the EQE 53 4MATIC+, combines driving dynamics extras – including the powerful boost for RACE START, the increase in maximum speed to 240 km/h, and the emotional AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE “Performance”. Sounds composed especially for this sound world – for charging or infotainment functions, for example – round off the AMG experience.

The driving dynamics deliver what the sound promises: if the temperature and state of charge are suitable, the maximum power and torque for RACE START can be briefly increased. The Mercedes‑AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ then needs just 3.3 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. The onboard bass actuator and speakers make the power of the electric motors clear even when stationary, and provide an emotionally charged sound backdrop to the high acceleration. The AMG-specific graphics in the displays also visually underscore the driving performance. The AMG Sound Experience can also be deactivated at any time via the settings of the multimedia system, and separately for the outside and inside.

Further options for even more dynamism

Numerous AMG options enhance the dynamic impression if required. These include design features such as the AMG Night Package with elements in black and black chrome, red brake callipers, or the AMG carbon-fibre trim elements. The high-performance electric saloons can also be further refined in terms of driving dynamics, for example with the AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system. There is also a choice of aerodynamically optimised 20- and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.

AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual race engineer, is also available as an option: the software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and permanently records more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration), for example while driving on a race track. On top of this, lap and sector times are displayed, as well as the respective difference from a reference time. Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, drivers are able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether they are currently faster or slower than the best time. The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display.

Sustainable use of electrical power thanks to Mercedes me Charge

With Mercedes me Charge, customers can always be sure of “green” charging at every public charging station throughout Europe as of 2021. High-quality guarantees of origin ensure that as much green power from renewable energies is fed into the grid as is withdrawn via Mercedes me Charge. In the first three years after the purchase, there is no basic fee for Mercedes me Charge and thus Green Charging for customers. Another advantage is IONITY Unlimited: all European EQE customers can use the IONITY fast charging network free of charge for one year via Mercedes me Charge. With the new Plug & Charge function, the AMG EQE can be charged particularly conveniently.

Mercedes me Charge is currently the largest charging network worldwide: It currently has more than 500,000 AC and DC charging points in 31 countries, including over 200,000 in Europe. Also included are the 336 fast-charging stations of the IONITY fast-charging network co-founded by Mercedes-Benz. In addition, the functionality of Mercedes me Charge in MBUX has been expanded to include functions such as filtering and forecasting the availability of charging stations.

Mercedes me App: easy to use on smartphone and tablet

The Mercedes me App offers many improved and new functions since the last revision. These include a filter option that allows the charging points to be sorted according to criteria such as availability or charging capacity. The app now also shows how busy the respective charging station is likely to be during the course of the day, based on a probability calculation.

Predictive route planning and efficient driving with Electric Intelligence

As far as Navigation with Electric Intelligence is concerned, the name says it all. Because it plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example. Electric Intelligence plans a fast and convenient route in advance, including charging stops, based on numerous factors such as the calculated energy demand. The system includes all relevant data in the calculation, from topography and route to driving speed and heating and cooling requirements.

With Electric Intelligence, the new AMG EQE models also react dynamically to the traffic situation on the planned route. The AMG vehicle records traffic tailbacks and road closures, as well as changes in energy demand. For its calculations the system uses information from the cloud, which it combines with onboard data.

The planned route can be edited individually. For example, the customer can set the additional reserve at the destination and at the charging station (SoC, State of Charge) – ten percent SoC is standard. If the “Charge at destination” function is selected, the set reserve may be undercut until the destination is reached. MBUX indicates whether the available battery capacity is sufficient to drive back to the starting point without charging.

Further options for individual route planning:

  • The route calculation prefers manually added charging stations along the route
  • The driver can exclude suggested charging stations
  • The estimated charging costs per charging stop are calculated

If the destination or charging station cannot be reached with the set settings, MBUX informs you in good time thanks to the “Active range monitoring” with a message to activate the ECO driving functions.

Comprehensive safety concept: Battery is crash-protected in the underbody

The battery sits in a crash-protected area in the underbody, embedded in the body shell structure including an extruded aluminium profile on the side. During extrusion, a heated block of metal is pushed through the dies and turns into an endless section, which is then cut to fit. This makes highly complex profiles that are precisely tailored to the requirements possible. The housing with energy absorbing structures at the front and side as well as a rigid, double-walled base plate provide additional protection for the modules. In addition, there is a separate, multi-level safety system for everyday operation. This includes, for example, temperature, voltage or insulation monitoring. If a fault occurs, the battery switches off. Crash monitoring when stationary (during DC charging) is also standard.

Materials cycle

The components weigh over 80 kilograms and are made of resource-saving materials (recycled and renewable raw materials). A new yarn made of regenerated nylon is sewn into the floor coverings of the all-electric AMG model. One ton of this yarn saves over 6.5 tons of CO2compared to new material. The steel for the vehicle body consists of 80 per cent secondary steel, most of which is obtained from recycled steel scrap.

After use in the vehicle, a second life is also possible for the batteries: for example, in an energy bank operated by Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH. Together with its partners, the company has already brought three large-scale energy banks with a total of around 50 MWh of energy from automotive battery systems into the German electricity grid. The first 2nd-life battery storage system was connected to the grid in October 2016 in Lünen, Westphalia.

AMG Steps Out Of The Mercedes-Benz Shadow

There's no question they've gained plenty of notoriety, and made plenty of money by taking Mercedes-Benz’s more conservative offerings

Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuning brand, AMG, has never built its own four-door car before.

There’s no question they’ve gained plenty of notoriety, and made plenty of money by taking Mercedes-Benz’s more conservative offerings and dialing them up to 11 and beyond, and it has made two coupes of its own, but it never had a four-door to call its own.

That all changed with the GT 4-Door Coupe it showed at the Geneva International Motor Show today, complete with a storming 315km/h supercar-hunting top speed.

Visually based on the AMG GT range of coupes, the GT 4-Door family is actually engineered around the same MRA modular architecture that sits beneath the E-Class, the C-Class and the CLS.

AMG engineers go-fast versions of all of them, so the chassis, suspension and power train development wasn’t exceptionally difficult for the brand, except for attaching some carbon-fiber (CFRP) reinforcement in the center and the rear end (similar to what Audi and Lamborghini have done with the R8/Hurucan twins).

Fitting the in-house GT styling on top of a born-to-be-Benz chassis was a bit more difficult, though, AMG has admitted. It tinkered with giving the four-door a stretched version of the all-aluminum chassis as the two-door models, but quickly abandoned that option on the grounds of rear-seat comfort and cost.

It’s another in the European premium auto industry’s attempts at richening up their model mixes, with AMG intentionally pricing and positioning the GT 4-Door Coupes to sit well above Benz’s E-Class and its just-launched CLS.

BMW has done something similar at the same show, showing an M8 concept four-door coupe to bridge the gap between its 7-Series limousine and its Wraith, the cheapest model in the Rolls-Royce range.

Longitudinal and lateral dynamics at the highest level, and a striking silhouette with classic proportions put the Mercedes-AMG GT 4‑Door Coupé in the portfolio of its two-door brother at first glance. The expressive design with the low bonnet, dominant front and muscular body language emphasises the sporty genes of the four-door coupé, which sets new standards as the youngest model in the AMG family: As the first four-door AMG GT model it combines high everyday comfort with diverse individualisation options and the latest sports car engineering.

“The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé blends the impressive racetrack dynamism of our two-door sports car with maximum suitability for everyday use. It has a unique way of embodying our brand core, “Driving Performance” and with its systematic configuration it will attract new customers for Mercedes-AMG”, commented Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers special driving experiences on all levels and with a top speed of up to 315 km/h and its driving dynamics it cuts an effortlessly superior figure wherever it goes. Powerful, up-to-date 6-cylinder in-line and V8 engines with outputs ranging from 320 kW (435 hp) to 470 kW (639 hp) allow completely new driving experiences and combine impressive performance with modern efficiency.

The interior of the first four-door AMG GT model is characterised by elegant coolness and also the latest features: innovative control panels can be intuitively operated and configured as required. The blend of high individualisation and sports car technology, placing yet more focus on the requirements of discerning customers, is also clear from the wealth of equipment packages and individual options. The latest coup from Affalterbach also lives up to the Mercedes-AMG brand pledge with regard to its high driving dynamics and sets the benchmark in its segment on the racetrack too.

Clear at first sight: the AMG GT family membership

Clearly recognisable as a member of the AMG GT family, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé follows the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. It takes the striking proportions with convex surfaces and a muscular body and develops them to exciting effect for a four-door variant of an AMG GT Coupé.

The front view with a long bonnet and two powerdomes leaves no doubt that this is the youngest member of the AMG GT family. The 4-door coupé follows the design tradition of the successful AMG GT models: the powerful body exudes dynamism and motivation. Sensuous shapes with convex surfaces lend the four-door GT timeless elegance, whilst the flowing silhouette with the lowered greenhouse flags up its sporting credentials. As in the AMG GT R radiator shutters, the Airpanel in front of the centre cooling air inlet improves the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. Slim MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator protection grille, the Shark Nose and the front apron with its enhanced Jet Wing (with a flowing A-Wing on the six-cylinder model) also lend the youngest model from Affalterbach the hallmark presence of the AMG GT family.

With frameless side windows and a flat windscreen inclined far to the rear, features of the classic coupé architecture are also cited. With the additional seat row in the rear the characteristic lines of the AMG GT models are not compromised. The tailored upper contours and broad shoulders point to the athletic, sporty orientation of the car, which is additionally emphasised by very pronounced rear wheel arches.

The rear view of the new 4-door coupé picks up on familiar features of the AMG GT design idiom: extremely slim LED tail lights define the hallmark boot sill line, the rear aerofoil extendable in several stages not only underscores the family affiliation; it is also an important element of the active aerodynamics.

The two eight-cylinder models can be identified through the three horizontal louvres in the side front air intakes, the Jet Wing with its trim element in Silver Shadow, the distinctive diffuser on the tail end and the two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe trims. The six-cylinder variant, meanwhile, has one louvre in each of the air inlet grilles, round twin tailpipe trims and a somewhat less pronounced rear diffuser.

“The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé is the ultimate four-door sports car and the ideal ambassador for Performance Luxury”, said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. “It embodies a symbiosis of emotion and intelligence with breathtaking proportions and a puristic, surface-oriented design with sensuous shapes. It is both hot and cool at the same time.”

Visual emphasis on demand: the exterior packages

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé offers an extensive portfolio of exterior equipment packages, which can be used to add different highlights in terms of design. The Night Package comprises high-gloss black trim, whilst, for example, the Chrome package emphasises the luxurious character of the car with trim and an insert in high-gloss chrome. Two Carbon-Fibre Packages offer different versions of carbon-fibre trim, whilst the optional Aerodynamics package gives the car an even sportier look and is a new feature in this segment. It includes additional functional features in high-gloss black, the Jet‑Wing in Silver Shadow in the front apron and the fixed rear aerofoil and also naturally reduces lift at higher speeds. With the V8 style package the six-cylinder model can also be equipped with design features from the eight-cylinder versions.

Top sporting performance: V8 biturbo engines with up to 470 kW (639 hp)

The exciting AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG models. Its output has been enhanced yet further for the new Mercedes‑AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 256 g/km)* and ensures superior performance on a par with a sports car. It delivers 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The top engine of the new four-door AMG GT thus exudes effortless superiority in every engine speed range. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds clearly illustrates this, as does the maximum speed of 315 km/h.

In the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 252 g/km) the V8 unit provides 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm maximum torque. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h lasts just 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is 310 km/h.

The AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine works with the proven biturbocharging, where the two exhaust-gas turbochargers are arranged not on the exterior, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the “hot inner V” are in the compact engine design and the immediate response of the exhaust-gas turbochargers.

In the AMG GT 63 S variant the eight-cylinder has active engine mounts. They solve the conflicting goals of achieving as soft a connection as possible to the powertrain for high comfort and as rigid a connection as possible for optimum driving dynamics, by steplessly and quickly adapting their rigidity to the respective driving conditions. As an option the AMG GT 63 can be equipped with active engine mounts as part of the Dynamic Plus package.

* The stated figures (provisional data) were determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring method. These are the NEDC CO2 figures according to Art. 2 No. 1 Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1153. The fuel consumption figures were calculated based on these figures.

Direct response: the two twin-scroll exhaust-gas turbochargers

Two twin-scroll exhaust-gas turbochargers combined with another innovative technology ensure even more output and better response. For the first time Mercedes-AMG is combining the advantages of twin-scroll technology in the V8 engine with turbine wheels mounted in anti-friction bearings. Through the mounting in anti-friction bearings, friction is reduced to an absolute minimum inside the exhaust-gas turbocharger. The twin-scroll technology also ensures that the exhaust gas flow is optimally utilised. Put together these both improved the immediate response of the four-litre eight-cylinder from AMG, which was already the benchmark. Through the optimised cylinder charge the output and the maximum torque was raised further. Spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, the all-aluminium crankcase, the four-valve-per-cylinder design with camshaft adjustment, air-water charge air cooling, alternator management, the ECO start/stop function and the gliding mode have all been retained.

Improved efficiency: the intelligent AMG Cylinder Management

For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which crucially reduces the fuel consumption.

When the driver has selected the “Comfort” drive program, the cylinder deactivation system is available in the wide engine speed range from 1000 to 3250 rpm. A special display on the instrument cluster states whether the cylinder deactivation system is in use and whether the engine is presently operating in the four- or eight-cylinder mode. The transition between these two operating states is immediate, fast and torque-neutral, so the occupants do not have to relinquish any comfort.

Powerful and versatile: six-cylinder engine with innovative hybrid function

Alongside the two V8 engines the new four-door sports car is also available as the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 9.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 209 g/km) with the innovative AMG six-cylinder inline engine. The 320 kW (435 hp) 3.0-litre unit is characterised by high performance, supported by a boost effect with an output of up to 16 kW (22 hp) and 250 newton metres of torque. The EQ Boost starter-alternator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is between the engine and transmission. This intelligent combination, along with efficient charging with the electric additional compressor (eZV) and exhaust air turbocharger helps ensure the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics but also cuts consumption and emissions at the same time. The four-door AMG GT 53 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, and achieves a top speed of 285 km/h.

More energy for yet more innovations: the new 48-volt on-board power supply

The EQ Boost starter-alternator in the new AMG GT 53 also generates the power for the 48 V on-board electrical system. This in turn uses a DC/DC converter to supply the conventional 12 V network for the lights, cockpit, infotainment displays and control units. Through the 48 V battery the battery capacity of the entire car is increased, which means that more electrical energy can be made available for new functions. The 48 V on-board electrical system thus also paves the way for the progressive expansion of infotainment and assistance systems.

Emotive gearshifting experience: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G 9-speed transmission is specially tuned to the requirements of the eight-cylinder variants of the new four-door AMG GT. A wet clutch is used here. This reduces weight and inertia and optimises the response. The extensively tailored software enables extremely short shift times and fast multiple downshifts and delivers an especially emotive gearshifting experience thanks to the double-clutching function. There is also a RACE START function, ensuring optimum acceleration.

The six-cylinder inline engine is coupled with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. In conjunction with the torque converter the transmission is tuned to the special requirements of this engine. On the other hand, the extremely fast and emotive gearshifting characteristic of an AMG model is also possible depending on the drive program.

In total: the high driving dynamics of the AMG GT

In order to meet the high demands of impressive driving dynamics, Mercedes-AMG engages all the components this takes. With its sophisticated design the bodyshell of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63/53 plays an equally crucial role as the ingenious control strategy of the all-wheel drive system. And it is only in the optimum interplay together with the active aerodynamics, the rear axle steering and the ESP® that the complicated suspension tuning unleashes its full potential. Through the complex networking of all the systems and components the developers in Affalterbach were able to bestow on the car the high level of driving dynamics expected of it as a member of the AMG GT‑family.

Structure made in Affalterbach: the rigid AMG bodyshell

One aim during development of the new four-door AMG GT was to anchor the genes of a sports car in the bodyshell. In order to do this, analysis and simulation methods from racing were used in order to reinforce the structure where necessary for maximum performance. The very rigid front section prevents unwanted distortions about the longitudinal and transverse axle, which ensures precise steering and better feedback for the driver.

In the area of the centre and tail end of the vehicle new reinforcement concepts were used in conjunction with state-of-the-art CRP plastics. This, together with further individual measures plus close networking with Chassis Development right from the outset, ensured that the four-door AMG GT was given an optimum basis for high lateral dynamics potential.

Dynamism made in Affalterbach: the AMG chassis engineering

The outstanding agility and racetrack-ready driving dynamics of the four-door AMG GT are also down to the special AMG suspension. On the six-cylinder model a suspension with steel springs and adjustable damping is used as standard. The suspension on the eight-cylinder variants is based on the fully load-bearing multi chamber air suspension AMG RIDE CONTROL+. A rigid integral carrier bears the front axle, engine, transmission and steering gear.

In conjunction with the wide track width and the configuration for large tyre dimensions, wheel location and spring elements which are independent of one another facilitate high lateral acceleration, whilst the low unsprung masses promote the agile driving feel yet further.

The rear axle differential also has a new specially reinforced mount to improve the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics. As on the AMG GT R, an anti-roll bar made of tubular material reduces the overall weight of the rear axle.

Intelligent all-wheel drive: AMG Performance 4MATIC+

All AMG GT 4-Door Coupé models are equipped with the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. An electro-mechanically controlled clutch connects the permanently driven rear axle variably to the front axle. The best possible torque split is continuously computed according to the driving conditions and driver’s input. The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless, as the intelligent control is integrated into the overall vehicle system architecture. Alongside traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive also improves the longitudinal dynamics for even more powerful acceleration.

It is still possible to drift thanks to fully variable torque distribution. The Drift Mode is suitable for this; in the S version of the four-door AMG GT it is standard, and in the other models it is available as an option. This can be activated in the “RACE” drive program using the shift paddles, provided that ESP® is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode. When activating the Drift Mode the four-door sports car thus turns into a model with purely rear-wheel drive.

Optimum traction: rear-axle limited-slip differential

To improve traction and dynamism the AMG GT 63 S has an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear axle as standard. The slip is thus suppressed at the inner wheel on bends, ensuring optimum grip. The driver is therefore able to accelerate out of corners earlier and with more power thanks to the improved traction. The vehicle remains more stable when braking from high speed, while the limited-slip differential also improves traction when accelerating from rest. The electronic locking differential is part of the Dynamic Plus package and in this combination it is also optionally available for all further variants of the four-door AMG GT.

Enhanced agility and precision: the active rear-wheel steering

The AMG GT 4-Door Coupé responds even more sensitively to steering commands thanks to the active rear axle steering which comes as standard in the V8 models and is optional in the six-cylinder versions. The system facilitates an even better combination of agility and stability and thus reinforces the dynamism and the handling safety of the new AMG GT four-door model.

Up to a speed of 100 km/h, the rear wheels point in the opposite direction to the front wheels via two electric actuator motors. As a result, the car turns into corners with significantly higher agility. Under everyday driving conditions, the driver also benefits from a smaller turning circle.

At speeds higher than 100 km/h, the system turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels. That noticeably improves driving stability. At the same time, the lateral force on the rear wheels builds up considerably faster on changes of direction, thus improving the response to the steering. The driver can also rely on extreme rear-axle grip and high stability when changing direction quickly, without the usual tendency for the rear end to break out.

Direct and immediate: AMG speed-sensitive sports steering

The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise feedback thanks to the AMG-specific rack-and-pinion steering with a variable ratio. Power assistance also varies between the three stages “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The corresponding characteristic is automatically activated depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalised as required in “Individual” mode.

Good control and fade-resistant: the AMG high-performance braking systems

In line with the high output values and their associated performance the eight-cylinder models have a large-dimensioned brake system consisting of compound discs with 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating brake callipers at the rear. The S variant is characterised by yellow brake callipers, whilst the base variant of the eight-cylinder sports red brake callipers.

The six-cylinder model is also equipped with internally ventilated and perforated compound brake discs with brake callipers painted silver grey.

As an option a high-performance ceramic brake system with bronze-coloured 6-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating brake callipers at the rear can be ordered, saving weight compared with the compound discs and thus reducing the unsprung masses. Further advantages are their high overall and fading stability under high stress. The brake system also wins points with a high service life and immediate response – guaranteeing fast lap times.

Design and lightness: the new AMG wheels

To make a grand entrance – both visually and technically – the four-door AMG GT Coupé is shod in generous wheel/tyre combinations. The customer can choose from a multitude of aerodynamically optimised disc wheels between 19 and 21 inches. Alongside their visual design the developers Affalterbach placed great emphasis on reducing the unsprung masses. It is above all the light-alloy wheels produced using high-quality forging technology, which set the benchmark yet again with their extremely low weight.

The AMG GT 53 and GT 63 variants of the four-door AMG GT Coupé sport standard-specification 10-spoke disc wheels painted vanadium silver in the size 9.5 J x 19 H2 ET 22 and 255/45 R 19 tyres at the front, plus 11.0 J x 19 H2 ET 17 with the tyre size 285/40 R 19 at the rear.

The AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ wears light-alloy wheels with five twin spokes painted tantalite grey with a high-sheen finish, in the dimension 9.5 J x 20 H2 ET 22.5 with tyres 265/40 R 20 at the front, plus 11.0 J x 20 H2 ET 20 and tyres 295/35 R 20 at the rear.

Fluid science: the active aerodynamics

A significant contribution towards the high driving dynamics and handling safety is made by the active aerodynamics, which has been tuned to the special requirements of the four-door coupé in extensive simulations, wind tunnel tests and road testing. The main components are the active air control system AIRPANEL in the front apron and the compact, multi-stage retractable and extending rear spoiler. The intelligent interaction of the active aerodynamics features ensures the optimum combination of power output and low wind resistance. The system is also oriented towards the respective driving style and the drive program selected.

On the AIRPANEL familiar from the AMG GT R there are vertical louvres located in the lower section of the front apron. These electronically controlled louvres are opened and closed in a flash via an electric motor in order to steer the air flow and thus ensure the aeroperformance/the necessary engine cooling requirements.

The multi-stage rear spoiler works according to a similar principle, by adopting the position required for the operating conditions. During fast driving on straight stretches the rear aerofoil automatically moves to a flatter position in order to reduce wind resistance and thus increase the maximum design speed. If the system detects lateral dynamics the spoiler moves to a steeper position in order to increase power output at the rear axle and thus ensure handling that is dynamic and safe in equal measure.

Added downforce: the optional Aerodynamics package

As an exclusive in its market segment the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé can also be equipped with an Aerodynamics package on request. It contains additional flics and an enlarged front splitter, which further optimises the air flow and output level at the front axle. The same applies to the modified diffuser in conjunction with the fixed rear aerofoil, which is also available in carbon fibre if desired. The three-dimensional wing profile can be manually adjusted, in order to adapt the car to the conditions of different race circuits, for instance. The Aero package increases the negative lift force at the rear axle, but the wind resistance remains unchanged.

Yet more differentiation in driving experiences: AMG DYNAMICS

Depending on the engine there are up to six drive programs to choose from in the four-door AMG GT: “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+”, “RACE” and “Individual”. These levels are selectable via the gearshift paddle in the centre console and stored with the new drive program attribute AMG DYNAMICS, which can be adjusted to match the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé’s handling characteristics to different demands and driving conditions in a much more differentiated way.

Behind the umbrella term AMG DYNAMICS are the agility functions “Basic”, “Advanced”, “Pro” and “Master”, which are automatically selected by the respective drive program. Parameters relevant to driving, such as the response of the engine, suspension, the control strategy of the all-wheel drive system and the control thresholds of the completely redeveloped ESP® are intelligently adapted according to the drive program.

The spectrum ranges from extremely safety-oriented to highly dynamic. The “Master” mode stored in the drive program RACE ensures optimum agility and brings out the high driving dynamics potential of the new member of the AMG GT family to optimum effect – for example through higher yaw rates and a faster response from the accelerator pedal, gearshift system, rear axle steering, electronically controlled rear axle locking differential or brake force distribution on the all-wheel drive system.

Irrespective of the drive programs, as before the driver can use the display buttons in the centre console to directly select manual transmission mode, their favoured suspension level and also the exhaust system, for instance.

Gran Turismo with ultramodern operation: the new AMG interior

The interior presents a symbiosis of performance and exclusivity and integrates an ultramodern, new type of operating system into the atmosphere of a Gran Turismo. The sculptural instrument panel forms an interesting contrast here to the large trim element with its flowing style, which merges into the driver’s door in a wrap-around effect. Illuminated turbine-look air vents refine the high-quality impression and underline the sporty appearance. The eye-catching feature in all AMG GT interiors is the centre console with its stylised V8 design, putting the spotlight on the brand’s performance claim as well as optimally fulfilling functional requirements.

Two high-resolution displays each measuring 12.3 inches dominate the Widescreen Cockpit, which is standard in the V8 and optional in the inline 6-cylinder version. Three different styles are available for selection for these all-digital displays: “Classic”, “Sport” and the completely new “Supersport”. Depending on the driving style or interior equipment, the different styles can be set at any time via the instrument cluster or the central display.

Via the left-hand Touch Control Button on the steering wheel, preferred information can be projected onto the left- or right-hand side of the instrument – for example, the classic speedometer and tachometer, information on navigation or assistance systems through to detailed engine data. Especially sporty drivers can also fade in a g-force display or the current output and torque values.

In the “Supersport” view there is also extensive additional AMG-specific information, such as a prominent prompt to change up a gear in manual transmission mode, reminiscent of motorsport.

The central display represents the interface to all further content and information, such as navigation, radio, media, telephone and vehicle data. The large full-screen map view ensures optimum legibility in all driving situations. There are also extra performance-oriented functions, such as visualisation of the all-wheel drive.

With additional functions as an option: the new performance steering wheel

The new AMG performance steering wheel blends ideal ergonomics with maximum functionality. Various functions are combined in groups on the sporty-style wheel with a high-quality touch and feel and can be precisely and intuitively controlled via Touch Control Buttons in the steering wheel. The driver to controls the entire infotainment system using finger swipes, without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

As an option the performance steering wheel can be equipped with extra innovative features. They consist of a round controller with an integral display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned colour display buttons beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke.

The AMG drive programs can be actuated directly via the controller. The selected drive program is shown on the colour TFT display directly integrated in the controller.

With the two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches, further AMG functions can be controlled within easy reach, directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can concentrate fully on dynamic driving without having to take their hands off the wheel. Each function required can be depicted on the other TFT display, and its switch is tapped by the driver to set the respective function. The driver’s two preferred AMG functions can be defined in this way and the settings changed with just one tap of the finger.

Display buttons and capacitive switches: the innovative centre console

Inspired by the two-door Mercedes-AMG GT, the centre console of the new 4-door model represents a further special feature.

A new and unique feature comes in the form of the colour display buttons, integrated into the distinctive and tailor-made trim element, for the integral display and control of the transmission logics, suspension, ESP®, exhaust system, start/stop function and rear aerofoil. With their TFT technology the display buttons use coloured, intuitively comprehensible symbols to show the function and are easy to operate with just a small tap of the finger.

The display push button switches are supplemented by the two capacitive switches for the drive programs and volume control.

Another new feature at AMG are the capacitive switches directly in front of the stylised centre-console V. The reversing camera, navigation, radio, media, telephone and vehicle settings can be operated via this proximity switch. If the finger moves within a minimal distance from the panel the appropriate symbol lights up directly in the head unit and preselects the menu item. The function in question is then activated by pressing. The driver does not have to avert their gaze, as the appropriate menu item is shown simultaneously in the multifunction display of the Widescreen Cockpit, representing an added bonus for handling safety.

Space as needed: four or five seats to suit requirements

When it comes to the seats, too, Mercedes-AMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performance-oriented vehicle configuration. The driver’s and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint.

The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively. The High-Class variant has everything a business saloon requires. The rear passengers can select diverse features via a touchpad screen integrated into the console between the seats. The features range from calling up the dynamism data via the AMG menu to controlling the ambient lighting or the climate control and seat heating.

The boot capacity of up to 395 litres is supplemented by around a further 60 litres beneath the boot floor. With the backrests folded down the capacity is up to 1324 litres. The wide load compartment opening makes it easier to load and unload luggage and other items. As an option, the large boot lid can be opened and closed with the HAND-FREE ACCESS feature via a movement with the foot beneath the bumper.

Always in touch with Connectivity and Intelligent Drive

For high comfort in everyday use the new four-door sports car from Affalterbach boasts all the connectivity and Intelligent Drive functions and options of the Mercedes-AMG S-Class. These include partially automated driving with the DRIVE PILOT, which can support the driver with routine daily tasks such as driving in a traffic jam.

In addition to the standard functions of Mercedes me connect, such as eCall, Accident Recovery, Breakdown Assistance and Customer Service, Remote Online (included as standard with COMAND Online) offers a range of convenience features via smartphone. For example tracking the parked vehicle, controlling the auxiliary heating, locking/unlocking the vehicle and checking the status of the mileage, fuel level or range, for example, among other things.

The vehicle as a virtual race engineer: AMG TRACK PACE

With AMG TRACK PACE, drivers can feel like Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, and capture and analyse in detail over 80 vehicle-specific data as well as times on the racetrack. AMG TRACK PACE is an additional function of the COMAND Online infotainment system and is part of the standard equipment for the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé.

Data collected on lateral and longitudinal acceleration, the accelerator and brake pedal or steering angle help record and continuously improve individual Driving Performance. All the values are shown on the COMAND display, on request also in real time on the telemetry screen. Thanks to the different colours and acoustic feedback used, faster or slower laps can be spotted out of the corner of the driver’s eye without any need to look away from the track. Even the drift angle of the car is calculated and displayed.

As well as recording drives on circuits, AMG TRACK PACE can also be used to register acceleration such as the sprint from standstill to 100 km/h or over a quarter of a mile as well as deceleration values.

Sporty room fragrance: fuel for the senses

The interior of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé has another world premiere in store. For the first time an AMG car has its own room fragrance. It is an appealing, sporty scent to match the spirit of the performance brand.

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé can also be fitted with the ENERGIZING comfort control for improved driver-fitness safety. This system networks different vehicle functions such as the air conditioning system, seat control, massage functions, steering wheel heating and ambient lighting, in order to relax or refresh the driver and passengers in a targeted manner with predefined programs.

World première and market launch

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé celebrates its world premiere on 6th March 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show. Sales release of the first four-door AMG GT is in summer 2018.

Representing the ninth special edition boat created from this partnership, the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE is 51’ 5” in length and features an increased beam of 9’ 6” which allows 6 passengers the ability to be seated comfortably. The new boat offers an increase of over 30% greater surface area when compared to the existing 50’ Marauder, while still providing similar performance and an impressive 140 mph top speed through the use of a highly optimized composite structure consisting of carbon-fiber, Kevlar® and E-glass. Cigarette’s signature aggressive shoulders, which rise in the rear of the boat, also allow the integration of a large sun cushion on the flat exposed-weave carbon fiber hatch – despite the tall engines beneath – for maximum comfort and versatility when stationary.

The boat’s deck is constructed completely of carbon fiber to reduce the total weight and lower the center mass of the boat. Carbon Fiber is also used for the inner structural laminate of the hull, forward bulkheads, cabin liner, engine hatch, consoles and storage hatches to significantly reduce the overall weight. For example, the air intakes, which are over 7ft long and 14inches wide, weigh only 4.4lbs. Overall, the weight optimized Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE is over ten feet longer than the Cigarette Racing 41’ SD GT3 but it weighs over 5,000-lbs less. Kevlar® has also been used for tabbing bulkheads and around the edges of framing for its extreme toughness properties.

“For 11 years, Cigarette Racing has been our trusted partner that has allowed us to extend our likeminded core performance principles from the land to the water,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “By directly translating Formula 1 technology from the track to the street, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is our most ambitious and awe-inspiring vehicle yet. It is incredible to see our vision reimagined for the water in such an impressive and highly compelling form.”

The Cigarette Racing Team worked in close cooperation with Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for Daimler AG, to design the hallmark characteristics of the boat. The distinctive matte black and silver paint and special badging instantly evoke the unmistakable Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. This attention to every detail extends inside the cabin with extensive use of Dinamica and seatbacks constructed of exposed-weave carbon fiber.

“As the hottest and coolest supercar we’ve ever created, the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE was our source of inspiration for the impressive new Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE,” said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler AG. “Both embody Performance Luxury at its absolute best, and are destined to become design icons.”

“Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing both have racing as part of their DNA, which makes us natural partners to work together to continue to push the limits of design and high performance,” said Skip Braver, CEO of Cigarette Racing. “Whether on land or on water our discerning customers demand the absolute best, so we are extremely proud to unveil the Cigarette Racing Team 515 Project ONE. It is by far our most impressive high performance boat yet and represents a triumph of engineering that proudly reflects our unparalleled performance pedigree.”

The Cigarette Racing Team 515 Project ONE is powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 1,350/1,550 QC4v (Quad Cam 4 Valve) engines and M8 stern drives, delivering up to 3,100 hp. These sophisticated powerplants are dual calibration engines, which enable the operator to switch engine power levels through an electronic key fob. The Race Key fob unlocks up to 1,550 hp, requiring race fuel. The Pleasure key fob is used for operating at 1,350 hp with 91 octane fuel. A staggered engine configuration lowers the center of gravity by allowing the motors to be placed closer to one another, deeper in the vee of the boat, which improves dynamics and stability.

The Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE draws inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE, a two-seater supersports showcar that will bring the very latest and highly efficient Formula 1 hybrid technology from the race track to the road. This mid-engined (ahead of the rear axle) high-performance hybrid showcar will have over 1,000 hp, offer a top speed beyond 217 mph (350 km/h) and reach 11,000 rpm, which is currently unique for any roadgoing vehicle. The awe-inspiring Mercedes-AMG Project ONE will combine outstanding racetrack performance and road capable Formula 1 hybrid technology with exemplary efficiency. The 1.6-liter V6 hybrid gasoline engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging will transfer directly from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car.  The high-performance plug-in hybrid drive system will come directly from Formula 1, and will be realized in close cooperation with the motorsport experts of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, England.

Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing began their collaboration partnership in 2007, primarily for organizing joint customer and marketing activities. Whether on land or water, Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing are united by their focus on delivering the ultimate in performance. Similar to its Mercedes-AMG super sports counterpart, the 38’ to 51’ 5’ long powerboats from the American specialists are among the world’s fastest and most exclusive machines.

These boats feature custom-made, handcrafted quality for enthusiasts and are tested under the most extreme conditions. Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing share similar DNA makeups: both companies have triumphant racing roots and are still dedicated to this passion.

The price of this one-of-a-kind boat from the Cigarette Racing Team is available upon request.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Sedan

Just 3.0 seconds. That’s all it takes for the E63 to launch itself to 60 mph

Life isn’t about how much horsepower you have but how you use it. Armed with the 603-hp version of AMG’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, Mercedes-AMG’s E63 S falls short of Dodge’s 707-hp Charger SRT Hellcat and Cadillac’s 650-hp CTS-V. (The non-S E63, which we don’t get in the United States, makes “just” 563 horses.) And yet thanks to its new nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, the AMG lays down its lesser output far more effectively than either of those rear-drive muscle machines.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Just 3.0 seconds. That’s all it takes for the E63 to launch itself to 60 mph. Four seconds later, the Mercedes is traveling 100 mph. Those acceleration times are 0.4 second and 0.2 second quicker than the five-pound-heavier Hellcat and far ahead of the 458-pound-lighter CTS-V, neatly summarizing the benefit of all-wheel drive in launching high-horsepower cars from a standstill. The preposterous list of vehicles that the E63 beats or ties to 60 mph includes Mercedes-AMG’s own GT S sports car, the McLaren 570GT, and the dozen-plus non-Turbo 991.2 Porsche 911 Carreras we’ve tested. Among four-doors, only Tesla’s Model S is quicker to 60—and just barely—while the Porsche Panamera Turbo ties the AMG but fades behind by the quarter-mile mark. BMW’s new 600-hp M5 sedan, now also with all-wheel drive, is a direct competitor that we’ve yet to test—it might come close.

Mercedes-AMG’s launch-control function is invitingly straightforward: Thumb the driving-mode switch to Sport, Sport+, or Race; hold the brake with your left foot; and depress the accelerator until the revs stabilize at 4000 rpm. When your left foot steps off the brake, the E63 rockets forward ahead of a wave of rippling V-8 noise. Our test car’s tailpipe music was enhanced by the $1250 dual-mode AMG Performance exhaust option. Some additional sound also is piped in through the speakers, but it sounds like a live recording of the actual engine, so we’ll give that trickery a pass.
Continue on to felonious speeds, and by 110 mph the E63 is reeled in by the Dodge and its advantageous power-to-weight ratio. After that, the Hellcat nips the E63 by mere tenths all the way up to 170 mph. Both cars are among the rarified few (Lamborghini’s Huracán supercar among them) capable of accelerating past that speed—and braking before running out of road—on the 1.6-mile straightaway where we conduct acceleration and braking evaluations. Our E63 did manage to outawesome the Charger’s 13-mpg fuel economy, averaging a profligate 12 mpg overall during our test.

Hard-Boiled E-class

The rest of the E63’s dynamic repertoire builds nicely on the foundation laid by its less powerful, comparison-test-winning, six-cylinder Mercedes-AMG E43 sibling. The E63’s staggered-width Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summmer tires have a 20-millimeter-larger cross section than the E43’s Pirelli P Zero Run Flats, which helped our E63 notch an additional 0.09 g of grip on the skidpad, for a sticky total of 1.01 g. That same rubber, in combination with the $8950 carbon-ceramic brake option, bolstered our test driver’s confidence in pushing for speed on our straightaway. We noted zero fade after repeated anchor drops, ultimately returning a 155-foot stop from 70 mph.

This athleticism is barely concealed on the highway, where the ride is decent and quiet in the suspension’s Comfort mode, and the steering’s well-defined on-center valley and heavy weighting make for relaxed cruising. Even so, everything about the E63 feels drumhead tight, a trigger-pull away from twitching into action. (The thin-sidewall performance tires literally are drum tight, as road impacts slap and twang through to the driver’s ears.) Switching to Sport, Sport+, or Race modes cuts through the genteel veneer, progressively skewing the E63’s ride ever more geological and shoving cocaine up the powertrain’s nose.

Drivers should come prepared to match the car’s reflexes. The new 4Matic+ all-wheel drive can send 100 percent of engine torque to the rear axle. Midcorner throttle applications provoke the rear-biased 4Matic+ system and electronically locking rear differential to initiate gentle, controllable drifts. Bigger throttle openings net larger effects. And as we discovered at this year’s Lightning Lap track test at Virginia International Raceway, where the E63 posted the fastest-ever lap time for a sedan, the chassis enthusiastically rotates off throttle, too.

Sideways Action

Should these handling behaviors fail to result in a satisfactory rate of yaw or sufficient consumption of the rear Michelins, there’s also the E63’s Drift mode. It declutches the front axle from the transfer case, sending torque only to the rear wheels. Compared with activating launch control, initiating this process is considerably less simple: First, select Race mode, then switch the transmission to manual shifting mode. Next, press and hold the stability-control button until it switches off, pull back on both shift paddles until an “Are you sure you want to do this?” message appears in the gauge cluster, then pull back once on the right-hand paddle. Not-so-presto, you’re ready to make bad decisions with 603 horsepower, two driven wheels, and zero stability-control intervention.

Spared from predicting how much help will come from the front axle, you’ll find that applying a rubber coating to the pavement is both easier and more controllable in Drift mode. You will get no help and like it, and like it we did. You’ll also experience the new nine-speed automatic’s near instantaneous response to manual gear selections. When left to shift automatically, the nine-speed’s gear selection is impeccable, and its tall top gear keeps revs low and quiet on the freeway. Although it still uses a clutch pack in place of a torque converter as did the seven-speed it replaces (allowing for brutal launch-control starts), the new transmission exhibits low-speed behavior that is vastly improved and nearly torque-converter smooth.

As it did with previous E63s, Mercedes-AMG wraps the new model’s rage in discreet and upscale clothing. It’s the automotive equivalent of Daniel Craig’s James Bond, an anger-management head case in a tuxedo. Aside from its burbling quad exhaust pipes, wide-mouth front air intakes, and our test car’s $1700 black-painted forged-aluminum wheels, the E63 looks like any other E-class or—depending on the viewer’s distance—any Mercedes C- or S-class. Until it kicks you in the face.

There is the matter of the immoderate price. The AMG is $36,305 dearer than a Dodge Charger Hellcat and a $16,905 leap above a Cadillac CTS-V. Our test car’s additional $29,935 in extras elevated the total cost to $135,330. Call it justified, though, as this counts as downright cheap for a machine capable of reaching 60 mph so quickly (not to mention doing so many other things well). Alternatives include the $135,000 Tesla Model S P100D and the $151,050 Porsche Panamera Turbo. Price notwithstanding, if you could own just one vehicle, this would be a good choice. Plus, there’s a wagon version.

A Look at the Huayra Super car from Mercedes-AMG and Pagani

The Huayra. The ultimate in Italian Automotive Art with a custome powerplant from Mercedes-AMG

The styling of the car was perfected over the course of 5 years to find each line’s beginning and end. During the study, eight scale models were created, as well as two 1:1 models. Each model was an evolution of the previous in a never ending quest for form perfection.

The bi-xenon headlamps are just one of the many precious gifts from the Zonda R, and LED daytime running lights are seamlessly integrated in the elliptical shape of the design. The rear bumper integrates with the diffuser and is dominated by an elliptical frame that surrounds the four central exhaust outlets, now becoming a characteristic Pagani element.

The 12 cylinder turbocharged engine from Mercedes-AMG has been developed to meet the strictest technical and quality requirements, but also to give the car its immense versatility.

The calm and harmony of driving one of the world’s most refined GT car is interrupted when the driver calls upon the Huayra to unleash its 700 hp and 1000 Nm of torque. The turbos have been studied to offer immediate response to the slightest throttle input, giving the driver full control over the engine at any rpm and preventing unwanted delays in the delivery of power.

The engine’s systems have been designed and tested to stand up to the most adverse conditions of temperature and performance. The Huayra has been subjected to the highs of Death Valley and the lows of the Arctic Circle. The two lateral radiators are positioned in the front to guarantee the best cooling efficiency of the intercoolers place oer the cylinder heads.

Dry sump lubrication ensures an optimal oil feed to the engine even when the car is subjected to the most extreme lateral accelerations. It also regulates the oil flow so that only the necessary amount of lubricant is actually pumped into the engine from the external oil tank, reducing the friction caused by an excessive volume of lubricant inside the engine sump. An oil/water heat exchanger reduces warm=up times by heating the engine lubricant during cold start and keeps engine coolant and lubricant levels at steady operational temperatures. Extensive weight saving programs led to ingenious yet simple solutions. In order to reduce hoses and connections as much as possible is built directly to the engine. The intercoller covers serve as expansion tanks to the low temperature circuit and the engine coolant circuit. The vertical fins contribute to the cooling of the tanks. The M158 engine is homologated to meet the strictest environmental regulations, EU5 and LEV2.

Despite the increase of power compared to the other Mercedes-AMG V12 engines developed for Pagani, CO2 emissions as well as the fuel consumption have been reduced, to make the Huayra class leading amongst 12 cylinder sports cars with values that are respective of much smaller vehicles on the market. The two stage fuel supply system features two microprocessor controlled pumps feeding fuel to the engine with the second pump only activated when necessary, thus reducing the energy required to run the fuel pumps and eliminates the waste of excessive fuel being transported and heated in the fuel lines.

As an homage to the decennial tradition of Mercedes-AMG in building world class sports car engines, the M158 displays the historic AMG emblem on the intake manifold alongside the name of the technician that assembled the engine by hand at the Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany.

The Titanium exhaust system is a direct application of race proven technologies on a high performance road car and the complete exhaust weighs less than 10 kg. Hydroformed junctions are used to reduce back-pressure and guarantee a free flow of the exhaust gasses. Titanium guarantees a low weight in the muffler area while Inconel guarantees reliability on the parts of the exhaust more exposed to high temperatures. Careful attention has been paid to the tuning of its sounds, which has led to a harmonic ruble at idle speeds with a hint of power that lies hidden at low speed and a deep thunderous growl of motor and air, reminiscent of an airplane, at high speeds.
