Mercedes-Maybach X David LaChapelle

Avant-Garde Art Collaboration Unveiled

In a collision of automotive opulence and artistic ingenuity, Mercedes-Maybach and renowned photographer David LaChapelle have once again joined forces to redefine the boundaries of cultural influence. The result? A triumphant trio of original artworks, unveiled amidst the glitz and glamour of Milan Design Week.

At the heart of this collaboration lies a shared ethos of pushing creative boundaries. Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, encapsulates this sentiment, affirming that “Culture and creativity are at the heart of Mercedes-Maybach.” But it’s not just about cars; it’s about crafting an unparalleled brand experience, and who better to breathe life into this vision than David LaChapelle?

LaChapelle, a maestro of color and composition, embarked on a journey through art history, drawing inspiration from the revolutionary movements of Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. These art epochs, with their daring perspectives and avant-garde aesthetics, mirror Maybach’s own evolution from engineering marvel to symbol of aspirational design.

The challenge was formidable: seamlessly integrate the Mercedes-Maybach within the artistic tableau without overshadowing the composition. LaChapelle’s meticulous attention to detail, coupled with his penchant for analog techniques, ensured a harmonious fusion of automotive prowess and artistic flair.

The unveiling took place at The Gallery Meravigli, where guests were treated to an immersive experience that transcended mere exhibition. The set design, a testament to LaChapelle’s visionary approach, transported attendees into a realm where art and automotive design converged in a symphony of creativity.

Each artwork tells a story, weaving together elements of history, fantasy, and whimsy. “Cubist Scape” pays homage to the pioneers of Cubism, with its interplay of shapes and colors echoing the movement’s radical departure from traditional representation. Meanwhile, “Future Scape” transports us to an alternate reality where the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV stands proudly alongside the Egyptian pyramids, a nod to the era of Futurism and its obsession with technological progress.

Lastly, “Surreal Scape” beckons us into a dreamscape reminiscent of 1930s Paris, where the Mercedes-Maybach GLS reigns supreme amidst a backdrop of theatricality and whimsy.

But this collaboration isn’t just about creating art; it’s about preserving it for posterity. Following its premiere in Milan, these masterpieces will find a permanent home within the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, ensuring that they continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

David LaChapelle’s oeuvre extends far beyond the realm of photography, encompassing music videos, films, and stage productions. His work, characterized by its boundless imagination and irreverent spirit, has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the 21st century.

As for Mercedes-Benz, the Art Collection stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to cultural enrichment and social responsibility. With exhibitions spanning the globe, the collection serves as a beacon of diversity and inclusion, celebrating artists from all walks of life.

In the realm where art and automotive innovation intersect, Mercedes-Maybach and David LaChapelle have forged a partnership that transcends mere collaboration; it’s a celebration of creativity in its purest form.

PRESS RELEASE

Embarking on a new chapter of cultural influence, longstanding partners Mercedes‑Maybach and David LaChapelle have reunited for a collaboration that spotlights the brand’s iconic roster, resulting in three original artworks. Driven by the powerhouses’ shared creator values and through the adoption of three of the most influential art movements, the outcome is a visionary interpretation of art and automotive design.

The artworks were unveiled on April 16th at an exclusive cocktail evening held at The Gallery Meravigli, during Milan Design Week. A live representation of the collaboration, the event recreated the set design of one of the concepts in an immersive and art-focused experience.

“Culture and creativity are at the heart of Mercedes-Maybach, but so is pushing boundaries in automotive and beyond. We are delighted to reunite with our long-term partner and pioneer artist David LaChapelle, to create a one-of-a-kind Maybach brand experience.”
Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG

“Mercedes-Maybach has a great tradition of investing in artists and supporting the fine arts. By cultivating a world of engineers, designers and artists, Maybach inspires creativity within their products and beyond. It is an honour to be part of the Maybach legacy and play in that beyond!
David LaChapelle

United by shared creator values

Following no prescribed brief, LaChapelle approached art and three of its most impactful periods as the inspiration behind the Mercedes-Maybach commission: Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. The selected art movements, groundbreaking for their time, perfectly allude to Maybach’s history as a pioneering piece of engineering turned aspirational design piece.

The challenge was to create artworks that seamlessly integrated the Mercedes-Maybach in an intentional way without drawing focus from the rest of the composition, which was achieved through LaChapelle’s meticulous approach to set-design.

Given LaChapelle’s passion for analogue, the set’s exquisite technical characteristics, precision and craft play a significant role in the creative process and final output. The live production also allowed for collaboration between talents, art department and crew which included acrobatics, four-time Academy Award Winner for Best Costume Design, Colleen Atwood, and LaChapelle’s longstanding set design collaborator, Annie Sperling.

The artworks

Titled “Cubist Scape”, the Cubism-inspired artwork took reference from several artists who initiated the movement. Playing on a juxtaposition of shapes, colours and methodical acrobatics, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is seamlessly integrated within the frame due to its metallic and glowing sheens, reflecting the energy this period is known for.

The collective cultural interest in Egyptology and Egypt’s advanced civilization set the tone for the Futurism artwork, titled “Future Scape”. Drawn from LaChapelle’s imagination, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV (Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, energy consumption combined: 24.1-22 kWh/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A)[1] stands alongside the Egyptian pyramids, each an engineering triumph. Acrobats and flying machines complete the scene in a whimsical and humorous tableau.

A new take on the Surrealism movement that plays on Paris in the 1930s and its collective of artists, LaChapelle’s “Surreal Scape” focuses on a repetition of forms and unconventional elements grouped together. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS (Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, energy consumption combined: 14.2-13.9 l/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 321-314 g/km | CO₂ class: G)1 is balanced in a landscape of juxtaposing scale where elements of theatre, dance and music are represented through the artist’s signature style.

Following the premiere at the Gallery Meravigli in Milan, the artworks will become part of the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection and will later be shown at various occasions worldwide.

Transforming a Mercedes-Benz S-Class and GLS into a Maybach – What it Takes

The top-of-the-line from Mercedes-Bnez is lacking nothing but the people charged with raising the bar even more answer how and why..

The forthcoming, $100,000 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-class, like all S-class cars, is on the bleeding edge of safety, technology, and sybaritism. It has as many acronymnical computer assistance protocols as the Department of Defense. It has a digital onboard personal assistant whose meddling condescension rivals that of 2001’s HAL9000. And it has more hide than one should realistically seek anywhere. So how does Benz envision making this vehicle even more lavish for their forthcoming 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-class?

“I think we added a lot of fancy content to create these Maybach versions, and to build that brand even further,” chief design officer Gorden Wagener says.

Fancy is a relative term. “The S-class is obviously our flagship,” says Giovanni Domenech, Mercedes product manager for the S-Maybach. “But the Maybach, in terms of luxury, has some key differentiators.”

The most prominent of these include a seven-inch wheelbase stretch, all granted to the rear compartment. This is done, according to Wagener, so that the brand can “put these first-class seats in there, reclining almost like a bed, so you get that comfort that you’re used to from first class in planes and boats and wherever these people are usually.”

Layers of shiny chrome jewelry rim the grille, hood, window openings, and rear. A nappa leather headliner slathers the inside of the roof. The rear doors power shut, the rear seatbelts power out on a robotic arm. The gas and brake pedals are Mercedes-Maybach branded, and knurled. There’s an exclusive scent for the Air Balance in-car perfume atomizer system.

And then there’s the paint. “Let’s not forget about the two-tone colors we are offering just for Maybach,” Wagener says. This option began as a callback to the nameplate’s pre–World War II glory on the failed first re-launch of the Maybach name and the Maybach 57s and Maybach 62s of the mid-2000s. It has since become a brand signature, and Benz is doubling down on double-colors for the latest S-Maybach, offering 10 different options. These hues provide a bit of visual extravagance that is supposed to stay just this side of tawdry. “Opulence is good, but we want to always keep opulence tasteful,” Wagener says. “I think that separates us from the rest of the pack, without mentioning any names.”

German Tuner Hofele Offers Unmatched Exclusivity and Opulence

Hofele will blow your champagne and caviar dreams

In the event you find the Mercedes-Maybach lacking the grandeur your high end tastes desire, fret not, there is a company out there that will blow your champagne and caviar dreams.

Donzdorf, Germany’s own Hofele, one of the more established names in the business, became an authorized tuner of Mercedes products and the company decided to start right at the top by building an enhanced Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. The link between Hofele and Mercedes go back more than a century, with company founders Michael and Martin Hofele’s grandfather having served as an apprentice to none other than Carl Benz, considered to be the inventor of the car.

The Maybach S-Class has been enhanced in line with Hofele’s philosophy of elegant sophistication with some sportiness thrown in. Therefore, rather than tread down the usual path of dialing up the power and adding carbon fiber, Hofele has focused on discrete, individual touches.

These include new badges in place of the previous Mercedes and Maybach logos, revised front and rear fascias with new silver elements, and new 20-inch wheels with Hofele’s Mythos pattern.

For the interior, the designers replaced the door sills and carpets and added new chrome accents around the speakers. They also added aluminum pedals and Hofele-branded Alcantara trim on the headrests.

Hofele notes that this represents only the entry-level stage of tuning for the Maybach S-Class and that customers can further personalize their cars through direct consultation with the company.

A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. It celebrated its world première in the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, the exclusive coupé concept car which thrilled connoisseurs and fans of the brand in 2016. The exterior appearance of the top-of-the-range model is rounded off by the 20-inch wheel in 10-hole design known from the Mercedes-Maybach. For an even more individual appearance, the range of paint finishes by customer demand now also includes the two-tone paint finishes presented with the Mercedes-Maybach S‑Class. The new exclusive colours magma grey, mahogany brown and silk beige/deep sea blue are available in the interior.

Its length of 6.50 metres alone is a sign of the special status of the Mercedes‑Maybach Pullman. It provides space for a generously sized and tastefully appointed club lounge in the rear, with a multitude of creature comforts fitted as standard, thereby ensuring the chauffeur-driven limousine lives up to today’s expectations of what constitutes maximum exclusivity and luxury. The VIP occupants sit on two standard-specification executive seats facing the direction of travel. They can enjoy the largest legroom in the segment; and can get in and out of the car with the greatest of ease and comfort. As is typical for a Pullman, the four passengers can sit facing each other in the compartment with an electrically operated partition. Also new for the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is a front view camera. Rear passengers are thus able to monitor the traffic in front of the vehicle even when the partition screen is closed.

The “2 cabin sound” feature of the sound system offers more exclusivity than ever before. Thanks to independent control for the front and rear passenger compartment, the occupants of the Pullman enjoy even more personalised music. The price of the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman starts at around half a million euro.

The V12 biturbo engine of the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman now has an output of 463 kW (630 hp). Technical data at a glance:

S 650
Number of cylinders/arrangement 12/V
Displacement (cc) 5980
Rated output (kW/hp) 463/630
Rated torque (Nm) 1000
Fuel consumption combined (l/100 km) 14.6
Combined CO2 emissions (g/km) 330
Acceleration 0-100 km/h (s) 6.5

Many governments, heads of state and royal families around the world have, for decades, chosen Mercedes-Benz saloon cars with the designation “Pullman” to travel in the stately style befitting their status. With the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman, the company is underscoring its exceptional position in this discerning segment: In addition to providing spacious seating in first-class comfort for high-ranking passengers, the new Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is of course also the embodiment of exclusivity at its highest level. One can sense the significance and greatness of it in every detail.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

The elegant cabriolet is set to make its debut at the Monterey Car Week, which will take place on the Monterey Peninsula in California between 15 and 20 August 2017. The final event will be the traditional Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which this year takes place on 20 August.

“The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy. Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious “haute couture” interior help to create the ultimate experience,” explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG.

Exterior: powerful structural elements with sharp feature line

Measuring almost six metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet incorporates the classic proportions of art deco design with its extremely long bonnet and puristic, flowing lines, and at the same time completely reinterprets these aesthetic principles. The curved basic body boasts a sporty, stretched design which is characterised by powerful structural elements in conjunction with the sharp feature line. This side feature line defines the upper vehicle body, from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle through to the rear.

The strong contrast between the dark blue paintwork in “nautical blue metallic” and the chrome highlights increases the fascinating relationship between the clearly defined areas with organically shaped wings and the chrome trim elements, which sit at the top on the edge of the wing as well as in the middle on the boot lid, where they also incorporate the vertical brake lights. This benefits the interpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille, which with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

The newly designed 24-inch light-alloy wheels feature a centre lock. This is painted in rose gold and as such reflects the colour shade used on all electric vehicle studies from Mercedes-Benz.

The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet’s rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lights which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. Further distinctive features at the rear include the diffuser with aluminium frame and the air outlets behind the wheel arches.

The transition between the vehicle rear, the area of the boot lid and the interior boasts a flowing design. Crystal white high-quality nappa leather creates an exciting contrast to the dark paint finish. The custom-made fabric top with interwoven rose gold threads has been perfectly coordinated with the look of the vehicle.

Interior: 360° open-air luxury lounge

With the luxurious interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates a new synthesis of intelligence and emotion. At the same time, the designers have combined the unique tradition of the brand with a hitherto unknown high-tech experience.

The generous, flowing design idiom brings exterior and interior together in a holistic design. The formal flow of the areas from the rear into the interior gives rise to a typical yacht feeling. A light wing flows in a curve across the door trim and the centre tunnel into the seat landscape, creating a 360° open-air luxury lounge.

The new “inside out” spatial design adds a particularly special feature. The sitting surface forms a horizontal plane, transitions into the vertical plane of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.

In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order. Here, too, the interplay of the contrasts is both hot and cool. The brand’s hallmark authentic materials and colours are used, such as rose gold on the trim elements, or the surfaces which come into contact with the skin, featuring a lavish, quilted crystal white nappa leather finish. In this luxury technique, familiar among other things from Chesterfield furniture, the leather is put into folds in a diamond pattern and secured to the frame with buttons. In the case of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, this traditional seat upholstery boasts a futuristic interpretation: each individual button of the quilting depicts a delicate Mercedes star, backlit in blue. The open-pore wood floor with inlaid aluminium underscores the lounge sensation and the connection to yachting.

Above the 360° luxury lounge, the display strip links doors, dashboard and the rear area. All display elements are integrated into the continuous glass trim part. By way of contrast, classic round dials, such as the instrument cluster, are positioned prominently. The combination of digital displays with real needles is also totally on trend. By using “hyperanalogue” elements, the designers are responding to the need of people to experience analogue luxury in what is an increasingly digital world. As a classic borrowing from aviation, three air vents are positioned beneath the wing which appear to float like engines.

Another highlight comes courtesy of the floating, transparent centre tunnel, which visualises the drive system’s electrical energy flow for the passengers by means of blue fibre optics.

The main driving functions as well as information relevant to the location (e.g. restaurant recommendations or information on points of interest) are shown on the windscreen via two head-up displays.

User experience: intuitive communication

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is designed to anticipate the needs of its passengers and to provide the required information and solutions in real time. The user experience also combines ultimate luxury with intelligence. In addition to the touch-only control and intelligent navigation linked to the appointment calendar, another example is the Concierge function, it is possible to talk to the concierge like talking to a friend, i.e. freely, without using predefined voice commands. This enables full concentration of the tasks of driving.

The latest generation of biometric sensors record the state of mind and health status of the passengers.

Emission-free driving: electric drive system generating 550 kW (750 hp)

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The flat battery sits in the underbody. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

The quick-charge function is also visionary: as a result of DC charging based on the CCS standard, the system allows a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In just five minutes enough power can be charged to achieve an additional range of around 100 kilometres.

The wow effect: visionary show cars with long-term prospects

With its generous dimensions, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet (length/width/height: 5700/2100/1340 mm) continues the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz. So far these include the Vision EnerG‑Force (Los Angeles, November 2012), AMG Vision Gran Turismo (Sunnyvale, 2013), Vision Tokyo (Tokyo 2015) and Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupé (Pebble Beach 2016). Thanks to the global nature of the Mercedes-Benz Design function, these concept vehicles take cues from local trends in design, culture and mobility and make these the focal point of the respective mobility concept. At the same time, these show cars are looking far into the future.

Mercedes-Maybach: perfection blends with exclusivity

Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group includes customers who place value on exquisite luxury, perfect workmanship and exceptional appointments. The latest vehicles include models launched in July 2017, namely the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4MATIC, (fuel consumption combined: 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209 g/km) and the S 650 (fuel consumption combined: 12.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km), which blends the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S‑Class with the exclusivity of Maybach.

Limited to 300 examples, the Mercedes-Maybach S‑Class Cabriolet (fuel consumption combined: 12.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 272 g/km) is the first open-top Maybach for decades and a homage to open-top automotive refinement.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, which measures almost six metres in length, is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

With its sensual, emotional design (“hot”) and intelligent details (“cool”), the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.

At the same time the design is something unexpectedly new – cool, technoid and reduced. This is exemplified by the aerodynamically intelligent basic shape. Even without aids such as spoilers, the airflow hugs the contours of the vehicle body and only breaks away very late at the tail end of the vehicle. Then there is the surprisingly technoid character of the narrow lights, the partially transparent rims and the split rear window.

“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency”.

Reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles: the exterior design

Clearly defined contours and organically formed wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. Below this, the main body has a bulging, muscular look, extending across the entire flank. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid.

A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

The distinctive 24-inch wheels are a development of the aero rim from the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile). A transparent shield in the vehicle colour provides a view of the aluminium spokes behind it.

A further highlight is provided by the gullwing doors, a hallmark Mercedes design element which has been brought up to date. They underline the sporty character of the vehicle’s silhouette and feature innovatively designed aluminium trim. The exterior mirrors designed as cameras are supported on the wings.

The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6’s rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lights which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. Above this sit the two extremely shallow rear windows (“split window”). Further distinctive features at the rear include the diffuser with aluminium frame and the air outlets behind the wheel arches.

Luxurious 360° lounge featuring new materials: the interior design

The interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a synthesis of intelligence and emotion and combines traditional Mercedes-Benz values with a new high-tech experience.

The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge. The new “inside out” spatial design adds a particular touch of finesse. The sitting surface forms a horizontal, which transitions into the vertical of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.

In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order. Authentic materials and colours such as rose gold are used to create luxurious accents. The interior, with its high-quality leather trim, has a cool colour scheme which perfectly underlines the digital innovations. The sitting surfaces have a Chesterfield look. In the doors and dashboard the traditional wood trim softens the appearance of the digital control and display interfaces. As a contrast to the digital world of the displays, elm is used in the floor area, creating a refined yachting look. Elm is the palest open-pore wood which Mercedes-Benz is currently working on for series use.

In the front luggage area of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a set of two suitcases, exclusively created for the vehicle. Here too the designers have followed the sensual, pure design idiom of Mercedes-Benz. Plenty of space has also been provided for further additions such as picnic accessories or personal items.

Dipping into the future: a fusion of analogue and digital experience

Ever since Mercedes-Benz invented the car 130 years ago, driving has been a source of enjoyment and delight. With the increase in digitisation comes a simultaneous need for sustainable analogue solutions, the design of which has been emphasised and in places exaggerated in the concept car. In the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 this can be seen above all in the “hyperanalogue” instruments with needles and circular, crystal-look displays.

The classic circular instruments are combined with deep displays and act as a reference to the unique history of Mercedes-Benz. In contrast, other display elements are digitally integrated into a continuous glass trim part. Information about the seat, for example, can be shown on this digital strip. Map information is also shown in the front area of the strip. Menu content is extended along a digital line which extends to the sides as far as the occupants, who can set their own content ergonomically using touch control.

The front windscreen serves as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This information can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures.

The luxury padded leather upholstery is a particular highlight. Its traditional look is combined with future technology here – the buttons which would normally be trimmed in leather have been replaced in the upholstered surfaces by miniature “body sensor displays”. These scan the passengers and monitor, for example, their vital functions. As a result, comfort features such as seat climate or the massage function, for example, can be activated or the seat settings adjusted to the passenger. The sensors embedded in the upholstery also record the incidence of light, the colour of the occupant’s clothing and the ambient temperature. This information can be used to trigger new, emotional lighting effects in the interior.

The concept car aims to embody the ultimate in luxury, and this is underlined by the fact that the driver can switch to digital/autonomous mode. Another highlight is offered by the floating, transparent centre tunnel, which visualises the drive system’s electrical energy flow for the occupants.

Emission-free driving: electric drive system generating 550 kW (750 hp)

The side sills, illuminated by LED light strips, clearly underline the fact that the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The output of the drive system is 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approx. 80 kWh. This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑1 00 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

Vision: add an extra 100 kilometres to the range in just five minutes

The quick-charge function is also visionary: as a result of DC charging based on the CCS standard, the system allows an impressive charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In just five minutes enough power can be charged to achieve an additional range of around 100 kilometres.

The battery can either be charged via a cable connection at a public charging station or a conventional domestic outlet or, for even more convenience, it can be charged wirelessly, via an electromagnetic field.

The wow effect: visionary show cars with long-term prospects

With its impressive dimensions, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 (length/width/height: 5700/2100/1328 millimetres) is the first luxury coupé in the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz. These include the Vision EnerG‑Force (Los Angeles, November 2012), AMG Vision Gran Turismo (Sunnyvale, 2013) and Vision Tokyo (Tokyo, 2015). Thanks to the global nature of the Mercedes-Benz Design function, these concept vehicles take cues from local trends in design, culture and mobility and make these the focal point of the respective mobility concept. At the same time these show cars are looking far into the future.

Mercedes-Maybach: perfection blends with exclusivity

Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group is made up of status-oriented customers. The current vehicles include the  Mercedes-Maybach S 500 and  S 600 models, launched in February 2015, which blend the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S‑Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. A special protection version, the  Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard, is the world’s first passenger car to meet the highest ballistic protection level for civilian vehicles, VR10.

The most recent model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman with face-to-face seating. Launched at the beginning of 2016, it adopted the mantle of absolute top-of-the-line model.

Mercedes-Maybach: A Sense of Spaciousness

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven. For the driver and any front passenger, there have been no compromises compared with a “normal” S-Class. Here, however, the real sense of spaciousness is to be found in the rear. The benefits of extending the wheelbase by 200 mm are felt entirely in the back of the vehicle where the specification has been refined even more. Due to the roofline, it was also possible to further raise the head clearance.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

A clear indication that the owner of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will typically be found in the second row are the standard-fit executive seats on the left and right. These rear seats offer a unique level of comfort thanks to a special adjustment kinematics system. In contrast to the norm, the backrest is adjusted separately while the footwell and seat reference point remain unchanged. The cushion can be adjusted separately, with inclination and horizontal adjustment combined.

For the executive seats, the maximum backrest angle is 43.5 degrees. The most upright backrest position of 19 degrees allows relaxed working in the rear. The reclining seats feature a calf support, which is freely adjustable for length and angle. As standard, the luxury head restraints come with an extra cushion.

The Chauffeur package is also part of the standard equipment. A “chauffeur position” for the front passenger seat is one of the key components: due to changes to the kinematics system, the rear seat occupant on the front-passenger side has 77 mm more footroom compared with a normal front passenger seat in the furthest forward seat position. In addition to this “chauffeur position”, the front passenger seat can be folded forward and the rear seat placed in an extended recline position for breaks. EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints come as standard for the driver and passenger, and the one on the front-passenger side is folding. For the rear passenger, the Chauffeur package also includes a heel support, which extends from under the front passenger seat. This allows a reclined position that sets new standards in the automotive sector with respect to sleeping and resting comfort.

Individual seat functions in the rear, and those of the chauffeur seat, are of course electrically operated via the typical Mercedes control panels in the rear doors. The rear armrest has a double cup holder, stowage space and wood trim.

As an option, it is possible to boost comfort for rear passengers even further. The Rear Seat Comfort package includes individually adjustable multicontour seats, for example, and an ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.

The First-Class rear suite (centre console in the rear) is a visual continuation of the front console on the centre tunnel. It is equipped with innovative thermo cup holders, which use Peltier technology to cool or warm drinks over a longer period of time.

Like an aircraft seat, the centre console is available with two tables which can be easily folded in or out using one hand. Two articulated joints on the stem and underside of the table enable it to be adjusted to almost any position. The table supports and surface are made of a light alloy, combining great stability with a high-quality look. The table surfaces have leather inserts to provide a comfortable writing surface.

To deliver maximum climatic control in the rear compartment, there is a second, standard-fitted THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system in the rear with two additional climate zones for the rear seats. A control panel on the back of the centre console allows the temperature and air distribution to be set individually for the left and right sides. For targeted climate control, there are two nozzles in the centre console and also on the B-pillars and in the rear footwell. Using COMAND Online, the driver can conveniently adjust the automatic climate control system for the back of the vehicle too.

As exclusive optional equipment (standard in the Mercedes-Maybach S 600), there is the AIR-BALANCE package including ionisation, enhanced air filtration and fragrancing with AGARWOOD, the exclusive Maybach perfume (see section on appointments).

Mercedes-Maybach: A New Sub-Brand Offering Peerless Exclusivity

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. Mercedes-Maybach motor cars epitomise peerless exclusivity. Some of the features that distinguish these vehicles from production models include extra spaciousness with lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualisation. As a result, the cars fulfil the requirements of even the most discerning customers worldwide.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach is not an equipment line – it is a sub-brand that in future will provide Mercedes-Benz vehicles in an even more exclusive form. Alongside Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach is thus the second sub-brand in the Mercedes-Benz brand world. Providing both prestige and exclusivity, it is aimed at customers for whom status is important.

The market launch of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is scheduled for February 2015. The top-of-the-range model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600. Its V12 biturbo engine has an output of 390 kW (530 hp). With a displacement of 5980 cc, the maximum torque of 830 Nm is available from 1900 rpm. The V8 biturbo engine in the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 generates an output of 335 kW (455 hp) from a displacement of 4663 cc. Its peak torque is 700 Nm. NEDC combined fuel consumption for the saloon is just 8.9 litres/100 km (premium petrol). CO2 emissions are 207 g/km. The Mercedes-Maybach S 500 4MATIC will also be available from June 2015.

Inside the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the level of wind noise is impressively low and in the rear, despite the large windows, betters even the quietest car in the world – the S-Class Coupé. For passengers in the rear, the Mercedes‑Maybach S-Class is the world’s quietest production saloon car.

In its exterior design, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines stylish, effortless superiority with trend-setting exclusivity. The vehicle makes modern luxury come alive in an exceptional way. Along with the extended wheelbase, emphatic lines suggest power and dynamism. Due to the sidewall’s special design, characteristic design elements for the S-Class are retained such as the sweeping, dome-shaped roofline.

The key distinguishing feature is the new side line: by comparison with the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the striking rear door has been shortened by 66 mm and therefore appears to meld seamlessly into the overall composition. The door has no triangular window because this has been relocated into the C-pillar. As a result, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cutout, which creates a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity. The elegant Maybach Manufaktur logo – a double M inside an arched triangle – adorns the C-pillars on both sides.

In the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, passengers are enveloped in lounge-style, modern luxury. With its clear architecture, refined materials and stylish controls, the vehicle embodies a sensuous elegance. For an exclusive look, the front centre armrests with nappa leather or exclusive nappa leather upholstery feature embossed Maybach crests. Another special feature in the dashboard is the analogue clock with an IWC design.

The high quality standards of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are impressively evident from the doors, which even have handstitched door trim as part of the standard equipment. This extravagance is part of the interior’s luxurious, hand-finished “Manufaktur” character. Exclusive features used in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are trim parts in wood/chrome and leather at shoulder height in the door panels, chrome-plated tweeter grilles and fibre-optic cables for the ambience lighting to the side on the armrest. Together they create a unique atmosphere conveying a sense of capacious style.

As the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz model range, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class satisfies the very highest requirements in terms of luxury appointments and comfort. In addition to all the amenities of the conventional S-Class, a number of exclusive interior touches underscore the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s ambition to lead. These include the exclusive Maybach perfume AGARWOOD for fragrancing as part of the AIR-BALANCE package and two silver-plated, handcrafted champagne flutes (both optional extras). Voice amplification is a novel function emphasising the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s positioning as a chauffeur-driven vehicle, which makes it much easier for occupants in the front to communicate with the rear passengers. The Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system offers a unique optical and acoustic experience. As a visual highlight, the tweeters in the rear doors of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are particularly sophisticated and can also be moved towards the passengers in a spiral motion.

Daimler To Revive Maybach Brand With Three Sedans

Daimler will revive its Maybach ultraluxury marque as a subbrand with three variants of its flagship S-class sedan

Daimler will revive its Maybach ultraluxury marque as a subbrand with three variants of its flagship S-class sedan, including a version aimed at Chinese buyers, but the company ruled out a Maybach SUV for now.

Daimler said it will unveil the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 at the Los Angeles and Guangzhou auto shows later this month. The sedan has a 6.0-liter V-12 twin-turbocharged gasoline engine capable of producing 530 hp.

S600 pricing to be announced on December 18

S600 pricing to be announced on December 18

It will be joined by the Mercedes-Maybach 500 with a V-8 engine and the Mercedes-Maybach S 400 4MATIC with a 3.0-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. This version has been designed to appeal to Chinese buyers looking avoid punitive taxes.

Media reports have said that Mercedes is developing a Maybach SUV based on the GL. Mercedes sales chief Ola Kaellenius said: “I don’t want to categorically rule anything out, but at this stage we have no plans for it [a Maybach SUV].”

Daimler also has no plans for Maybach hybrids but executives did not rule out adding hybrid variants in the future.

Daimler scrapped the Maybach brand in 2012 because of disappointing sales. Maybach deliveries peaked at about 600 cars in 2003, while its rivals, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, have gone on to post sales records.

Kaellenius told reporters here on Tuesday that Maybach will be reborn as a subbrand offering luxury and individualization for status-oriented buyers with the most discriminating tastes.

When asked whether the S 600 would compete with ultraluxury brands Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Kaellenius said: “I am completely convinced that we can win customers in the highest segment.”

Kaellenius said the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 will cost less than Maybach sedans sold between 2002 and 2012. Prices will be disclosed on Dec. 18. The sedan “will be positioned in a price segment below the earlier Maybachs with a spaciousness and driving performance that fulfills the ultimate demands,” he said.

He said Mercedes-Maybach sales would be “significantly above” previous volumes of the old Maybach, of which more than 3,000 were built over its 10-year lifespan.

There are currently no plans to expand Maybach into lower segments such as the E class, which is positioned immediately below the S class.

The Maybach S 600 has a wheelbase stretched by 200mm to give it a roomier interior. Some of the features that distinguish it from the standard-production models include extra spaciousness, special seats and lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualization, Daimler said.

The sedan also offers the quietest interior in the rear of the passenger cabin even when matched against rival models from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Daimler said.

Although the Maybach S 600 is shorter than the Maybach 57, Kaellenius said the feeling of spaciousness inside the car was bigger. Asked whether Mercedes planned an even longer version for customers who bought the Maybach 62, which was more than 6000mm long, Kaellenius said: “We shall see.”

Mercedes has sold more than 100,000 units of the S-class models since the start of this year, which Kaellenius said was roughly the volume of the Audi A8 and BMW 7 series combined.

As an independent brand, Maybach — named after an early collaborator of Gottlieb Daimler, one of the automaker’s founders — failed to mount a serious challenge for ultraluxury buyers because it lacked global name recognition.

“It’s a much better fit to reactivate Maybach as a subbrand of the S class than to try to artificially build up a brand history,” said Daniel Schwarz, an analyst with Commerzbank in Frankfurt. “The S class is already a strong brand and can be leveraged even further.”
