GLE and GLE Coupé: Updated Exterior, Interior, Technology and Equipment

Even more to experience: useful functions of off-road use and trailer operation

Versatile: the Mercedes-Benz GLE and its sporty offshoot, the GLE Coupé, are just as suitable for families and leisure time as they are for long-distance journeys and transporting loads. 4MATIC, which comes as standard in Europe, ensures that you can get through even in poor traction conditions or off-road terrain on gradients of up to 100 percent. A towing load of up to 3.5 tonnes1makes it possible to pull a horse trailer, a valuable classic car or a larger caravan.

Mercedes-Benz has now updated the exterior, interior, technology and equipment of the model generation launched in 2018. The updated models will reach dealers in Europe from July 2023. The engine range is now electrified throughout. It includes mild hybrids with a 48-volt system and Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) as well as fourth-generation plug-in hybrids. Most models now have more power than the previous versions. The biggest is the increase with 30 kW on the GLE 400 e 4MATIC (details for GLE SUV: Fuel consumption combined, weighted (WLTP): 1.1-0.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions, weighted (WLTP): 25-19 g/km, combined power consumption, weighted (WLTP): 27.3-24.7 kWh/100 km)2.

The Driving Assistance Package contains further improved specific functions, for example for the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist and Traffic Sign Assist. The Parking Package with 360°camera3 supports the driver when manoeuvring into and out of parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. Another new feature is the “transparent bonnet” function. If the off-road drive program is switched on, the central display shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle – helping to make this noticeably easier in steep terrain. Helpful features for towing include the Trailer Manoeuvring Assist, the updated Trailer menu in the central display and the Trailer route planner. It can be used to find optimised routes when travelling with a trailer.

The GLE’s lineage began with the M-Class. With it, Mercedes-Benz established the premium SUV segment in 1997. The global success continued with the GLE launched in 2015. The current model series followed in 2018. The GLE and GLE Coupé are produced at the Tuscaloosa Mercedes-Benz plant (USA).

Equipment: designed for off-road use and towing a trailer

Most drivers of a GLE only travel on paved roads or in easy to moderately difficult off-road terrain. Mercedes‑Benz has therefore recompiled the scope of the Off-Road Engineering Package in order to be able to offer it at a much lower price for the purely combustion-engined models of the GLE. Components include an underride guard and, in combination with AIRMATIC air suspension (optional extra), 30 millimetres more ground clearance.

The “Off-Road Mode” in the current MBUX generation turns special content such as gradient, roll angle, compass and steering angle into a visual experience. In conjunction with the optional Parking Package with 360° camera, it offers the “transparent bonnet” function. When the Off-Road Mode is active, the central display shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle, including the front wheels and their steering position. The view is composed of the images from the 360° camera. The “transparent bonnet” is extremely helpful: it enables the driver to better recognise obstacles such as large stones or deep potholes in his/her path. This function also offers advantages when driving over ramps or crests.

The GLE pulls off even more: all-wheel drive and a gear ratio designed for traction enable a high towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes4 and a tongue weight of up to 140 kg. The fully electric trailer coupling is particularly convenient: via a button in the tailgate or a panel on the central display, the ball neck together with the socket for the trailer electrics is swung out from under the car at the touch of a button and automatically fixed in the operating position. After use, it retracts back into its rest position behind the bumper equally effortlessly. A special feature is also provided for those who do not use the coupling to tow a trailer, but to carry bicycles for example: the trailer coupling has two extra bolts on the ball neck to carry a suitable cycle rack safely. Its load capacity is 100 kg – this means that e-bikes can also be taken along.

New to the GLE and GLE Coupé is the Trailer route planner for the navigation system: on the central display, the occupants can plan routes that are suitable for driving with the previously defined trailer and do not involve large diversions or loss of time. Among other things, widths and heights of the route as well as weight restrictions are taken into account. The trailer is defined via the Trailer menu in MBUX. This automatically appears as soon as a trailer is electrically connected to the vehicle. Customers can choose between bicycle racks and two trailer sizes. They can also set the speed – in Germany, for example, 80 or 100 km/h. The Trailer route planner takes this information into account. Particularly convenient: the Traffic Sign Assist only displays speeds permitted for the car/trailer combination. And if DISTRONIC and Active Speed Limit Assist are activated, the vehicle now accelerates only up to the relevant speed limit.

The extended Trailer Manoeuvring Assist now works via a camera-based system and is thus also suitable for trailers with their own stabilisation device against rolling movements. In addition, the assist system makes manoeuvring with a trailer even easier, and is more convenient and safer. The system automatically regulates the steering angle of the towing vehicle up to a speed of 5 km/h and an uphill gradient of up to 15 percent. It is also integrated into MBUX and can be operated intuitively via the touchscreen. In addition to stabilising the combination when reversing, the system can also guide it around freely selectable bends of up to 90 degrees. The steering of the towing vehicle is operated automatically so that the selected angle is maintained. This allows more precise positioning of a trailer.  Drivers can also select a corresponding function once the trailer has reached the desired direction and needs to reverse in a straight line. The entire manoeuvring process can be followed from different camera perspectives on the central display. Dynamic guide lines show the path ahead and the vehicle width. The system must be briefly trained. However, no markings on the trailer are necessary for the visual measurement of the drawbar length. Trailer Manoeuvring Assist is an optional extra and can also be unlocked as an “Over the Air” (OTA) update after purchasing the GLE.

Thanks to improved surround sensors, the parking systems give the driver even better support when manoeuvring. Integrated into MBUX, they can be operated more intuitively and quickly. Unlike in the predecessor model, Active Steering Assist now remains activated in towing mode. The system helps the driver to stay in lane automatically, even when cornering slightly.

Exterior design: new daytime running light signets

A number of detailed changes to the exterior give the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé a distinctly more modern appearance. The new front bumper provides more visual presence. Two horizontal louvres with chrome inserts run through the radiator grille of the GLE. The grille of the outer air intakes has been given a horizontal chrome fin.

The so-called light flare in the headlamps is characteristic of Mercedes-Benz. With the standard LED High‑Performance headlamps, two light points complement the distinctive daytime running light signet, while with the optional MULTIBEAM LED there are four light points. The designers have also revised the interior of the tail lights: on the GLE, the light signet is formed by two horizontal blocks, on the GLE Coupé it is two bars.

The AMG Line exterior is now standard on the GLE Coupé. Elements of this line include the diamond grille with Mercedes-Benz pattern in chrome, the AMG front apron with chrome trim element, AMG side sill panels and wheel arch cladding in the vehicle colour, as well as the AMG rear apron with diffuser-look insert.

Fresh additions to the colour palette of these two SUVs are sodalite blue metallic and MANUFAKTUR alpine grey solid. Two aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels in 19- and 20-inch sizes complete the line-up of choices for the GLE. They feature a high-sheen finish and a five-twin-spoke design. The AMG Line exterior also features a new 21-inch wheel design. The ambient lighting with animated projection of the Mercedes-Benz pattern is available as a new optional extra.

Interior: with fine details from the Mercedes-Maybach GLS and Mercedes S-Class

New on board the GLE and GLE Coupé is the latest-generation steering wheel with sensor surfaces on the horizontal spokes. With these touch elements on the right and left, the driver can operate the driver and central displays from the steering wheel.

A special eye-catching feature in the interior is the chrome look of the centre and side air vents. Previously they were edged in black, but now the slats are galvanised in real metal, as in the Mercedes-Maybach GLS. For the interior colours, the equipment combinations catalana beige/black (GLE SUV) and bahia brown/black (GLE SUV and GLE Coupé) have been added. The black/classic red appointments available exclusively for the coupé and in combination with AMG Line are particularly sporty.

The trim range continues to be broadly diversified between classic and progressive. Familiar from the Mercedes-Maybach GLS and now also available for the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé is the “MANUFAKTUR piano lacquer black flowing lines” trim. If black appointments are selected, the seats are available in a nappa leather finish. With ambient lighting, the same colours and colour palettes can be selected as in the S-Class. Two USB ports (optional extra) delivering 100 W of power are available in the rear armrest as practical charging options.

The premium audio system Burmester® surround sound system which now also features the personal sound setup as well as the Dolby Atmos immersive audio experience. With the “Online Music” service5, Mercedes‑Benz has comprehensively integrated many music streaming providers into the MBUX infotainment system. 13 speakers, 13 separate amplifier channels and a system output of 590 watts are further features of the Burmester® surround sound system.

Newly available as an optional extra is ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL. The system monitors air quality using air quality and fine particle sensors. A two-stage filter concept reduces fine particles and a large proportion of other pollutant components. Depending on the measurement value, the vehicle intelligently switches between fresh air and air-recirculation modes.

Latest generation of MBUX: intuitively operated and capable of learning

With the second generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, the GLE and GLE Coupé are now also up to date. The vehicle interior becomes even more digital and intelligent, as both the hardware and software have made great strides: numerous vehicle and comfort functions can be controlled on the LCD screens in brilliant display views. The sizes of the driver and central displays, each measuring 12.3 inches, have been retained. The central display can be operated directly and conveniently as a touchscreen. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are now available wirelessly.

The driver and central displays offer a holistic, aesthetic experience. They present information in a structured and clearly defined way. The appearance can be individualised with a total of three display styles (classic, sporty, discreet) and four modes (navigation, assistance, service, off-road).

Hey Mercedes: the increasingly sharp voice assistant

The voice assistant “Hey Mercedes” becomes more interactive and capable of learning by activating online services in the Mercedes me App. Moreover, occupants can trigger certain actions even without the activation keyword “Hey Mercedes”. These include taking a telephone call, for example. Hey Mercedes also explains vehicle functions on hearing the “Help” command, and provides assistance when asked how to connect a smartphone by Bluetooth or where the first-aid kit can be found, for example. Hey Mercedes even recognises the position of the occupants. In addition, other vehicle functions such as the interior lighting or the blinds can now be controlled by voice command.

Smart Home: operating comfort from a distance

With the MBUX Smart Home function6 the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé become a mobile control centre for the home. Because Smart Home refers to WLAN, sensors and actuators making the home increasingly intelligent and communicative: temperature and lights, shutters and electrical appliances can be remotely monitored and controlled. Motion detectors and window contacts inform the user of welcome or unwelcome visitors.

“Hey Mercedes, is there anybody in my home right now?” “I checked. The last movement detected was in the kitchen one hour ago.” This allows conversations to take place between the occupants and the Smart Home via the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) Voice Assistant. The MBUX Smart Home function supports numerous devices from major Smart Home providers. You can address lamps, sockets, thermostats, shutters and blinds, motion detectors and door or window contacts, as well as temperature sensors. In this way, Smart Home integration into MBUX can help to reduce home energy consumption.

“Over-the-air” (OTA) updates: the latest software

As soon as a new software update for the GLE or GLE Coupé becomes available from Mercedes-Benz, a message appears in MBUX. The update is downloaded and installed in the background. The user must then explicitly agree again to the activation of the update. New features can also be uploaded to already sold vehicles by over-the-air updates. To transfer the data, Mercedes-Benz relies on mobile communications technology and the communication module installed in the vehicle due to the high security standard.

Vehicle users can also enhance their user experience by adding new functions in the Mercedes me Store, such as music streaming services or In-Car-Office. Subscription services can also be renewed or newly added directly online via the Mercedes me Store.

Powertrain: systematic electrification

Thanks to mild hybrids with 48-volt technology and the Integrated Starter Generator as well as plug-in hybrids, the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé are now electrified throughout. The plug-in hybrids have been upgraded to the latest, fourth generation.

The plug-in hybrids have a permanently excited 100 kW synchronous machine and offer a system output of up to 280 kW as well as a system torque of up to 750 Nm. With slightly increased electric ranges of up to 109 kilometres7 according to WLTP, most everyday journeys can be covered purely electrically. The improved hybrid drive program provides the electric driving mode for the most appropriate sections of the route. On routes in urban areas, for example, the GLE prioritises electric driving. Thanks to an Off-Road drive program, the plug-in hybrids can now also drive electrically in off-road terrain.

An 11 kW charger is now on board the plug-in hybrid models for charging from the domestic AC mains or the three-phase wallbox. In addition, an optional 60 kW DC fast charger is available on request.

Most models now have more power than the previous versions. The biggest is the increase with 30 kW on the GLE 400 e 4MATIC (details for GLE: Fuel consumption combined, weighted (WLTP): 1.1-1.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions, weighted (WLTP): 25-23 g/km, combined power consumption, weighted (WLTP): 27.3-26.2 kWh/100 km)8.

Fresh colours for the seat upholstery

In the interior of the GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé (combined fuel consumption 10.5–10.2 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 239–232 g/km)13 and the two ’63’ models, the AMG seats are only available with leather upholstery. New here is the colour scheme in bahia brown/black or macchiato beige/black. For the trim elements, lime wood in high-gloss brown is now also available as an option. AMG Carbon Fibre or MANUFAKTUR high-gloss black piano lacquer with decorative lines are also available on request. The new Mercedes‑AMG GLE models also benefit from the latest generation of MBUX: the AMG-specific screen design makes the brand experience even more immediate.

Significantly more extensive standard equipment

Another important aspect here is the offer logic, which is very precisely geared to frequently expressed customer wishes. As a result, the standard equipment is significantly more extensive than it was for the previous model. In the case of the GLE 53 4MATIC+ SUV (combined fuel consumption 10.7‑10.3 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 244‑234 g/km)13, it already includes the electric panoramic sliding sunroof, heated front seats, Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Smartphone Integration. Among this model’s further features are the engageable AMG Performance exhaust system, the Burmester sound system, the Memory Package, the 360‑degree Parking Pilot, the KEYLESS‑GO Package and Blind Spot Assist. The latest generation of the AMG Performance steering wheel is also always on board. The round AMG steering wheel buttons impress with their brilliant displays and intuitive operating logic. They allow important driving functions and all driving modes to be controlled without the driver’s hands leaving the steering wheel. The steering wheel rim can be heated as an option, and is also available in a carbon fibre look.

In the GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé, the standard equipment is even more lavish: here, climate control for the front seats, the MBUX Augmented Reality function and MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are also included in the standard specification. This configuration ex works also applies to the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ SUV (combined fuel consumption 12.8–12.4 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 291‑282 g/km)13. In the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupé, customers can also enjoy the benefits of the AIR‑BALANCE Package, the multi‑contour front seats and the head‑up display. Additional standard features include the MBUX Interior Assistant, temperature-controlled cupholders and the logo projector with AMG-specific animation when the front doors are opened.

Electrified motors and modified suspension

The GLE 53 4MATIC+ combines sportiness with a high level of everyday practicality. The exterior exudes more hallmark AMG class than ever. The basis for the sporty driving experience is provided by the unchanged 320 kW (435 hp) 3.0‑litre inline six‑cylinder engine with twin turbochargers. With the help of a software update and a larger turbocharger, the AMG development department increased the maximum torque from 520 Nm to 560 Nm. Furthermore, the engine now responds to driving commands with extra spontaneity and added agility. Acceleration from zero to 100 km is also more dynamic at 5.0 seconds (previously 5.3 seconds).

The GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ stands for pure AMG Driving Performance – whatever the terrain. It appeals to customers who have no desire to compromise. Here, extreme sportiness meets good off‑road driving characteristics and reliable operation in everyday life. In the ’63’ models, the proven AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine with an output of 450 kW (612 hp) ensures powerful propulsion. As an option, customers of the ’53’ models can also order the suspension of the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+. Fine-tuning of the software for the configuration of the ESP®, the electronically controlled rear‑axle limited-slip differential, the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all‑wheel drive and the suspension control system delivers a dynamic and superior driving experience for all models.

Both engines are electrified by means of an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and a 48‑volt electrical system. The ISG combines starter and alternator in one powerful electric motor and is installed between the engine and the transmission. The ISG also performs hybrid functions. These include boosting, recuperation, load point shifting, sailing and the almost imperceptible restarting of the engine during the start/stop function.

Also common to all AMG GLE models are the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all‑wheel drive and the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive adjustable damping. AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilisation is fitted as standard in the ’63’ models and is available as an option for the ’53’ models. It works with two electromechanical actuators on the front and rear axles. The system reduces body roll when cornering and allows more precise tuning of the turn‑in ability and load change behaviour. Ride comfort during straightline driving is also improved, because any excitations caused by uneven road surfaces on one side are balanced out. As part of the facelift, the roll stabilisation and air suspension also benefited from a software update and a new set-up. These measures increase the spread between dynamic handling and comfort.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic Review

A bare bones base model will still delight, but the extra goodies will pamper and spoil

Anyone who buys a Mercedes GLE SUV instead of the luxury pinnacle GLS can be forgiven. The midsize GLE is a big step up from the compact GLC crossover, while the gap from GLE to full-size GLS—the S-Class of SUVs—is not as gaping.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

I last drove the GLE 450 during judging for the 2020 MotorTrend SUV of the Year award. At that time, it was evident that Mercedes continued its tradition of paying impeccable attention to detail with appropriately luxurious materials. As a result, the GLE 450 exudes a truly premium aura.

It was time to revisit the SUV to see if that first impression still rings true. So, I spent some time with a 2020 Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic—meaning all-wheel drive—in addition to the 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 engine that generates 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It also has an integrated starter generator known as EQ Boost to create a fuel-saving mild-hybrid system.

Once parked, I pondered whether the interior is befitting of the $82,485 sticker price. The base price is $62,145, but this particular model’s price tag included $1,620 for two-tone black and Tartufo (rich mocha-like brown) leather and $160 for natural grain grey oak wood trim as part of the paint and upholstery package.

Let’s start with those. The colors do feel warm and decadent, and the wood is striking, so if you have the money to pamper yourself, this is a good way to do so. The upholstery has contrast stitching as well, and the seats are a nice mix of firm support and comfort.

The color palette and material mix continues on the dash and doors but adds some MB-Tex (Mercedes’ high-quality fake leather) on the dash and doors. It is a $700 pop for the upper dash and door trim.

The four rectangular vents across the center of the dash are classy, functional, and trademark Mercedes. They are set in the oak trim and rimmed in bright metal, matching the row of switchgear in a row below.

Overhead is a black fabric headliner. It is soft enough but does not go full-lux with Alcantara like some top-level luxury vehicles do. The panoramic sunroof is a $1,000 option.

Further setting the mood are the pinstripes of mood lighting that snake along surfaces, running along the dash and halfway across the doors. They also run along the grab handles that flank the center console and the lights also find their way into the footwells.

You can get a rotation of colors that change every few seconds creating a mood, for example, by going from red to purple to pink to blue. The brightness can also be adjusted. And when you change the cabin temperature, the light will turn red indicating more heat; blue if you are cooling things down.

Those grab handles—in leather with contrast stitching and wood trim between them—are a personal favorite design feature. An extra $180 ensures the cupholders housed there are both heated and cooled.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

Do The Seats Heat, Cool And Massage?

The long list of optional equipment includes $350 so the front passenger has a power seat; no date should have to resort to manual adjustment. For an extra $1,050, the Warmth and Comfort package adds fast-heating front seats and cozy heated front armrests and door panels.

Need to cool those seats too? The $2,100 Energizing Comfort Package Plus ups the ante with ventilated massaging seats. There are a number of excellent massage patterns to choose from with names like “wave massage,” “mobilizing massage,” and “classic massage.” Or opt for “seat kinetics” that keeps driver’s circulation stimulated with periodic small jabs of movements to the seat cushion and backrest.

The GLE has the basic Mercedes steering wheel with lots of controls at your fingertips, and the spindly gear shifter stalk attached that feels like the cheapest element, arguably, in the entire vehicle. The extra $250 for the heated steering is totally worth it if you live in the north or the mountains.

How Big Is That Touchscreen?

What’s better than a 12.3-inch screen? Two of them. One is the widescreen digital instrument cluster and the second, a touchscreen, is right beside it. While they are in fact separate, they present as a single, horizontal screen stretching across much of the vehicle. The graphics are sophisticated and crisp.

The MBUX infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The $1,600 Technology Package includes the MBUX augmented video for navigation, which uses the front camera to overlay street images on the map with street names and guiding arrows to make the directions easier to follow. The package also adds a head-up display, and the MBUX interior assistant will recognize the proximity of a finger on the underside of the rearview mirror and automatically turn on the reading light.

Hey, Mercedes

The car perks up whenever you say ‘Mercedes.” Simply say “Hey, Mercedes” to initiate a voice command. It sounds great in theory but can be annoying. The car-that-cannot-be-named in regular conversation will interrupt you, anxious to please. Similarly, because the car reacts to hand gestures, keep your hands on the wheel unless you mean to make something happen.
To stay connected, the $1,000 Premium Package bundles satellite radio with power outlets, accessory adapters, wireless charging, and the 64-color ambient lighting with illuminated door sills. A pet peeve: Mercedes only uses USB-C ports even though most phones and devices still use a regular USB, which is larger. It means most regular cords won’t work without an adapter. There are two ports for the front seat and two more for the second row.

Our model included the $850 Burmester surround sound system. In the excellent acoustics of the well-damped cabin, the sound is premium.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic

Second Row Not For Second-Class Passengers

The second row is really designed for two people; no regular person fits in the middle, and the space is better used by pulling down the fold-down leather armrest and cupholder. The back of the front seats are a combination of leather and plastic with handy mesh cargo nets.

There are two vents in the center console to change the direction of the air flow in back, but temperature is controlled from the front seat. The unit has a small plastic ledge that a small phone fits onto poorly and an oversized phone might not rest very securely. In a strange nod, there is a tray seemingly for coins. Who carries coins anymore? There are two more USB outlets; again they are USB-C.

To protect rear passengers’ privacy, the SUV has power side-window blinds, a $580 option.

The doors are soft-close (automatically cinching tight after you close them just enough for the latch to catch) and have a substantial feel to them, befitting the car’s price point. But I would not pay $650 for the illuminated running boards. It’s not the illumination I object to; it’s the running boards themselves that can make it harder to get in. This feature is almost untenable on the smaller GLC, where the vehicle is not high enough to need the help and the boards are wide enough that they are an obstruction. In the larger GLE, the running boards are more useful but still straddle the line between helpful and hindrance.

Ample Cargo Area

The cargo area is expansive with metal plates to protect the sill while loading and black carpet throughout. There is a mesh net on one side for storage, in this case a first-aid kit and ice scraper. A retractable cargo cover does the trick but is not extraordinary like the BMW’s cover that rolls back automatically and disappears into the floor between the second and third rows. On the GLE, the liftgate raises extremely high and did not recoil as it approached the top of the garage. Folding down the second-row seats is a manual operation.

Overall, the interior of this five-passenger SUV largely mirrors what you would find in the larger, more luxurious, and more expensive GLS. Many of the creature comforts are optional, so you can add as many or few as you want or can afford. A bare bones base model will still delight, but the extra goodies will pamper and spoil.

From 3 December 2018 “In the long run” will be available on YouTube. The talented Swedish film maker Niclas Larsson directed the film, and Oscar winner Linus Sandgren was behind the camera. Filming took place in Austria. The title track “Cold Little Heart” was composed by the British soul singer Michael Kiwanuka and is taken from his album “Love & Hate”. In addition to the long version, 30-seconders are also being used on TV as ads. Different cut variants can also be seen on social media.

“The GLE campaign is going live on air today, on the “ International Day of People with Disabilities”. In a short film Mercedes-Benz tells an authentic and emotional story depicting various aspects of strength. Far removed from a typical SUV ad, we are showcasing the GLE as a modern family car and strong companion in all circumstances”, says Natanael Sijanta, Head of Marketing Communication Mercedes-Benz Cars. “As a responsible, approachable brand we are using the GLE campaign to present our new premium SUV with all its’ strengths – and at the same time we want to send out a powerful message on inclusion in everyday life.”

The campaign: the GLE campaign is the first element in the new overarching communication strategy for the Mercedes-Benz SUVs. With the claim “All kind of strength” it focusses on human characteristics which match the respective SUV model. A new element of the campaign is also the cross-media approach. The visual worlds produced unfold their charm in all formats and serve the markets’ specific requirements.

Further features of the campaign: the campaign is complemented by a web special and a series of print motifs.

The print motifs show the GLE on a road trip in realistic situations. The focus is on various features and their authentic use. The motifs were photographed by Uwe Düttmann. The award-winning photographer has been working for Mercedes-Benz for years and has also accompanied among others national and international productions like Stern, Rolling Stone, Vogue and Elle magazine.

Credits: the idea and concept for and implementation of the campaign were devised by antoni garage, the European creative lead agency for Mercedes-Benz.

The new GLE: The new Mercedes-Benz GLE is not only exceptionally dynamic and more comfortable on the road, it is also more competent off the beaten track than ever before. Its exterior design exudes strength and charisma and at the same time sets a new aerodynamic best in its segment with a cd value from 0.29. The interior is even more spacious, the second row of seats is electrically adjustable as an option and a third seat row is available on request. The GLE impresses with innovations such as E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL. The fully networked hydropneumatic active suspension on a 48 V basis is available for the first time in combination with the air suspension, also newly developed. The new driver assistance systems further increase the level of active safety. The infotainment system has larger screens, and optionally comes with a full-colour head-up display with a resolution of 720 x 240 pixels and the MBUX interior assistant, which can recognise hand and arm movements and supports the driver’s and front passenger’s operating intentions.

The GLE is also more capable off-road than ever: available for the first time for models with six and eight-cylinder engines and the plug-in hybrid, fully variable all-wheel drive (Torque on Demand, TonD) controls the torque distribution between the front and rear axle from 0‑100 % depending on the selected driving mode. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE will be launched with two engine line-ups and will be delivered to customers from the beginning of 2019.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe Spy Photos

For the first time, we have spy photos of the enhanced AMG version

While we’ve been seeing prototypes for the redesigned GLE Coupé for nearly a year, for the first time, we have spy photos of the enhanced AMG version. The coupé styled crossover will feature a lowered suspension and huge wheel/tire combination. You can see the round exhaust tips at the rear as well which has us thinking this is the GLE43 Coupe replacement. Also suggesting this is the entry level replacement, is the single-bar grille in the front. On the GLE63 AMG Coupé, we’d expect to see a multi-slatted P.

Another giveaway is the single-bar grille up front. The fully fledged GLE63 Coupe should sport AMG’s multi-slatted and rather striking, Panamericana radiator grille.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 Prototype

What's really remarkable about the GLE's off-road performance isn't the kind of situations it can get itself into and out of; it's how easy it feels from inside

The new GLE-Class really is that good, even in prototype form.It starts with an all-new platform called Mercedes High Architecture, or MHA, but not necessarily all-new ideas. Indeed, the big party trick was born out of the road-only S-Class. Mercedes is calling it E-Active Body Control, and it takes the S-Class technology a big step further. On the S, a forward-looking camera scans the roads for bumps, holes, wavy pavement, and more and adjusts the damping so that when the car arrives at the obstacle it can waft over the imperfection without disturbing the passengers. It does so using hydraulics to lift the wheels up to pop over a bump or push them down into a hole, then put them back where they belong as you come off the bump or out of the hole. In practice, it allows you to drive over a speed bump at 35 mph and barely notice it.

The new GLE advances this idea by replacing the S-Class’ central hydraulic system with individual, independent hydraulic systems at each wheel, allowing the computer to control each wheel separately from the other three and fine-tune the damping on a level even the mighty S can’t touch. Donut-shaped hydraulic accumulators fit around the dampers, and high-powered servos adjust the preload and rebound constantly to iron out the road. As an added bonus, the system is powerful enough that Mercedes engineers were able to get rid of the physical anti-roll bars and rely instead on the hydraulics.

Our well-appointed prototypes were fitted with both the fancy dampers and the optional air suspension (steel springs and fixed dampers are standard), which in most cases would’ve been handicapped by the also-fitted sport package with enormous 21-inch wheels staggered 275 and 315 front/rear in Pirelli P Zero SUV performance tires with skinny 45- and 40-section sidewalls. Instead, this big SUV rode like, well, an S-Class. Undulating pavement ceased to exist as the system kept the ride perfectly flat, while potholes and railroad tracks were reduced to small bumps, more noise than impact.

To truly appreciate how well it rode, though, I had to get out and ride in a current-generation GLE 43 AMG Coupe that was tailing us. Suddenly, the highways and byways around Birmingham, Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park felt coarse, wavy, and seemed to have much bigger expansion joints, potholes, and bumps. The GLE prototype had simply been erasing them all.

I mentioned that E-Active Body Control does away with physical anti-roll bars, and it’s more than a technical curiosity. Among other things, it allowed the GLE engineers to crib another high-end Benz trick: Curve Control. Originally designed for the SL-Class, Curve Control lifts the suspension on the side of the car opposite the direction of the curve it’s taking (you turn left, it raises the right side of the car). This helps reduce some of the lateral g force on the passengers as you corner. On the SL, the system felt very abrupt, like the sudden banking of a roller coaster. As you turned, there was a push from the side of the car and you were jacked up on an angle.

The GLE engineers have thoughtfully refined the system to the point where it’s effectively invisible in normal driving. There’s still a hint of that abruptness in its maximum setting (Lean Level 3) at low speeds, but now that you can adjust the amount of lean, you can dial it back to your liking. Or you can simply choose another driving mode like Comfort or Sport if you don’t care for it or don’t need it. In especially sharp corners or emergency maneuvers, the computer temporarily and automatically cancels Curve Control until things settle down.

Road scanning is only active in Comfort and Curve Control driving modes, but don’t think everything goes to pot if you select one of the sport or off-road modes. The computer simply relies on individual wheel sensors, yaw sensors, steering angle, throttle/brake position, and more to continuously vary the damping rate for the conditions.

The sport modes are where E-Active Body Control’s virtual anti-roll bars really shine. Keeping any vehicle’s body flat in a corner is a task, and it only gets harder as the vehicle gets taller and heavier and the center of gravity rises. Make no mistake, the new GLE is a big SUV, but it corners flatter than your average sporty sedan. When a typical vehicle goes around a corner quickly, there’s both a lateral and vertical component to the body roll. Depending on which side of the car you’re on, you move slightly up or down as the vehicle leans in addition to feeling pulled to the side. The GLE eliminates that vertical motion, so all you feel is the sideways pull. At most, there’s a slight dip at the corner with the most weight on it, the outside front then rear as you enter and exit a curve.

With that kind of body control and an impressive level of grip afforded by the steamroller-spec Pirellis, our GLE prototypes handled shockingly well considering both their size and mass and the fact they weren’t AMG products but simple GLE 450s with a sport package. In most corners, it’s just grip and go. You can’t really attack sharp corners without getting a moderate understeer, but that’s to be expected. What’s unexpected is the amount of rotation the stability control allows in Sport+ mode when you power out of the corners. It’s like the GLE engineers knew there was nothing they could do about the front end but wanted to make up for it by loosening the reins on the rear end just a little. It does all this by stiffening the virtual rear anti-roll bar during sporty driving, though it will go back to stiffening the virtual front bar when speeds get high to promote stability.

Helping achieve all this is Mercedes’ new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with assistance from an electric motor between it and the transmission. In addition to the natural smoothness of an I-6, this engine boasts seamless torque thanks to the electric assist and a unique and pleasing growl that’s throatier than your typical I-6. It’s matched to a nine-speed automatic and a standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive system that utilizes a new electronically controlled wet-clutch center differential that can send 100 percent of power to the rear and up to 65 percent of power to the front on pavement. Left-to-right torque distribution is handled by the brakes as both differentials are open.

Off-road, though, is where the real surprises show up. Here, the Benz engineers pull out the entire bag of tricks. On the dirt, the air suspension can raise to the highest of its six settings, 3.1 inches higher than normal ride height (it can also drop 1.6 inches below normal for easy entry and exit), the center differential can fully lock and send 100 percent of the power to the front axle if it needs to, and the optional two-speed transfer case can be dropped into its crawl ratio.

Don’t think the system gets dumb, though. Every sensor but the road-scanning camera is still active, and the damping is being adjusted constantly to deal with the terrain. To keep you out of trouble, low range and maximum ride height are a package deal and come with an electronic speed limiter of just 12 mph. The center diff, meanwhile, is constantly varying the front-rear torque split and fully unlocks when you’ve got the steering wheel turned to the stops to improve the turning radius.

With a set of optional Pirelli Scorpion ATR A/T M+S in a square 275/50R20 fitted on all corners and steel plates fitted under the engine and transmission/transfer case, the big GLE becomes a rounder, plusher G-Wagen off-road. On a moderately difficult trail, the GLE crawled over decent-sized rocks, forded deep water, dropped into crevasses, and climbed up and down very steep hills without missing a beat or dragging a bumper. I saw an indicated 45 degrees of downward pitch and 28 degrees of roll on various obstacles. We even backed up that 45-degree slope, just for fun.

You might think those open differentials would be a deal-breaker off-road, but like many modern SUVs, the GLE gets away with using the brakes as a limited-slip differential. Unlike many others I’ve tested, though, the GLE’s computer clamped down on a tractionless wheel in less than half a rotation and sent power to the other side, where others would’ve let the wheel spin a bit before realizing it had no grip.

What’s really remarkable about the GLE’s off-road performance isn’t the kind of situations it can get itself into and out of; it’s how easy it feels from inside. Coincidentally, I’d pre-run a Jeep trail the previous weekend in our long-term F-150 Lariat FX4 and the difference in passenger comfort was shocking. In the pickup, I was constantly being thrown violently from side to side in the front passenger seat as we traversed rocks, roots, bumps, and holes. In the GLE, in the same seat on a more difficult trail, I spent the entire ride taking notes on my phone and never once reached for a grab handle. The level of body control on the Benz is that good.

Then there’s the fun stuff. Dig deep enough into the off-road menus, and you’ll find a screen that allows you to control the height of each wheel independently with sliders. Ever watched a video of lowriders dancing on their hydraulics? It’s basically like that, if a bit less dramatic. Then there’s Free Driving Mode. It’s meant to keep you from getting stuck in deep sand, and it does that by making the car hop straight up and down surprisingly hard. The idea is to unload the tires slightly and let the sand get under them rather than pile up in front and cause you to dig a hole. I guarantee both of these features will be used to show off on pavement at some point.

I’d like to tell you even more about the new GLE if you’re still reading, but the terms of my access to these prototypes forbid it. What I can tell you about is what you can see if you look closely enough at the photos. Right away you’ll see the new car adopts Mercedes’ twin-eyebrow LED daytime running lights. Look closer and you can see that beneath the camo the dramatically sloping C-pillar—a calling card going back to the first ML-Class from which the GLE-Class came—is still there. Cast your eye down to the wheel arches, especially at the rear, and you’ll see the GLE has very wide hips to accommodate its massive tires. In all, it looks like a tall, beefcake E-Class wagon with a shorter rear overhang. Step back and you appreciate how well Mercedes’ designers and engineers have nailed the proportions.

Given its performance on-road and off, it should be easy to see why I was second-guessing myself. You just don’t expect this breadth of capability from a luxury SUV, or even a mainstream one. Few modern SUVs do this much, period, and fewer do it this well. I’m sure it’s got faults somewhere, and I’m looking forward to trying to find them when production models hit the road in the first half of next year as 2020 models.

It’s immediately clear that the the designers are going with a sleeker, more athletic look for the second-generation GLE Coupe. There’s even a large rear spoiler attached to the tester, likely part of an AMG Line styling package.

Underpinning the vehicle is Mercedes’ MHA modular platform designed for crossover SUVs. The platform is closely related to Mercedes’ MRA platform found in most of the automaker’s sedans and coupes, and made its debut in the 2016 GLC. A redesigned GLS based on the platform is also in the works.

Powertrains should include Mercedes’ latest inline-6 with mild-hybrid tech, plus a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 reserved for a Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe. A plug-in hybrid option should also be available.

Completing the drivetrain in each model should be a nine-speed automatic and rear-biased all-wheel-drive system.

Look for the GLE Coupe to be revealed next year as a 2020 model. It should trail the regular GLE by about six months to a year.

A redesigned BMW X6 is due around the same time. Other contenders in this segment include the new Audi Q8, Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Flash Back Friday: Not just any SUV, Mercedes GLE 450 AMG Tops Performance Numbers

The new V6 top model of the GLE series facilitates impressive driving performance: acceleration, handling and top speed are on a par with those of sports saloons

Mercedes-AMG is extending its offering of AMG sports models. The GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC is already the third vehicle in this new line. The power SUV facilitates a further, attractive way of entering the AMG performance world. The hallmark characteristics of the sports models include the enhanced engine output and the higher torque of the 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine, the specific AMG suspension, the Sports Direct-Steer system, the nine-stage automatic transmission 9G‑TRONIC and the permanent all-wheel drive 4MATIC with the rear-biased torque distribution of 40:60. The new V6 top model of the GLE series facilitates impressive driving performance: acceleration, handling and top speed are on a par with those of sports saloons.

With the five drive programmes Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport Plus the characteristics of the new GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC can be modified depending on the driving situation. The interventions occur via numerous parameters such as throttle response, load development, switch points, shift speed, chassis, steering, engine sound or instrumentation.

“Sport” and “Sport Plus” turn the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC into a sporty, dynamic vehicle with pronounced longitudinal and transverse dynamics for plenty of fun at the wheel on winding stretches of road. In the “Comfort” setting the emphasis is on relaxed, effortlessly superior cruising plus driving power that is as energy-efficient as possible. “Slippery” mode optimises the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, “Individual” mode enables the driver to programme and store personal preferences in the individual setting parameters, regardless of the engine variant.

GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Interior

GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC

A perfect combination: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission

Depending on the drive programme, the nine-stage automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC changes gears with high agility and responsiveness or effortless calm. The potential of the new transmission is exploited to the full. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting, as well as gentle, barely perceptible gear shifting for enjoyable travelling. The transmission’s large kingpin inclination enables cruising with the lowest engine speed during relaxed driving. This simultaneously ensures optimum efficiency.

The AMG development engineers have also specifically designed the standard-fit permanent all-wheel drive 4MATIC for performance-orientated use in the GLE 450 AMG. The drive torque is distributed in a ratio of 40:60 (front axle:rear axle). This rear-biased configuration raises the lateral dynamics to an above-average level – supported by the perfect interplay with the adapted acceleration skid control ASR, the ESP® with Curve Dynamic Assist and the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS. Also new is the specific AMG rear axle transmission with a shorter ratio of 3.47:1.

Sophisticated chassis: AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS Plus damping system and Sports Direct-Steer system

As standard, the vehicle comes with the AIRMATIC package including an air suspension, infinitely variable adaptive damping system (ADS Plus) and automatic level control. The damping system changes its priorities from highly dynamic to comfort-orientated depending on the drive programme. The current operating conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and the driving speed from the ESP® signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel. In “Sport” and “Sport Plus” mode the body is lowered by 15 millimetres.

In combination with the newly configured, degressive Sports Direct-Steer system, the steering ratio of which is very direct at 17.4:1, and the compact sports steering wheel, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions – whether manoeuvring in the city, at high speeds on the motorway, or with a brisk style of driving on winding mountain passes.

Diesel and hybrid drive: efficiency meets the joy of driving

In addition to the appealing design, the variable driving experience thanks to DYNAMIC SELECT and the assistance systems familiar from the E- and S-Class, the GLE impresses with an extensive engine line-up. Five equally efficient and powerful powertrain options with four, six or eight cylinders are available to choose from.

The special focus:

  • The (201-hp) four-cylinder diesel model GLE300d offers superior performance with an all-time low fuel consumption for this class of vehicles. It is the world’s first production full-size SUV with conventional drive that under the European cycle emits just 140 g of CO2/km (5.4 l/100 km).
  • No less impressive is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV with plug-in hybrid technology. A system output of 436 hp in the GLE550e 4MATIC guarantees brilliant performance – with European cycle CO2 emissions of just 78 g/km (3.3 l/100 km). With a power consumption of 16.7 kWh/100 km, the GLE 500 e 4MATIC is the benchmark in this market segment. In addition, the hybrid model is capable of up to 30 km (18.6 mi) of all-electric driving.

GLE550e 4MATIC: plug-in hybrid technology meets a luxury SUV

The new GLE550e 4MATIC with plug-in hybrid drive combines the power and refinement of a V8 engine with the fuel consumption of a three-liter car and the versatility of a premium SUV. The drive system components comprise a V6 direct-injection gasoline engine with 329 hp and a hybrid module with 114 hp of electric power. The system peak torque is a massive 479 lbs-ft. In addition to impressive acceleration thanks to the boost function, the innovative system drive also offers all-electric driving at speeds up to 81 mph, optimized energy recovery thanks to the intelligent operating strategy and comfort functions such as pre-entry climate control in summer and winter.

A selector switch on the center console and the instrument cluster offer the driver a choice between four specific operating modes:

  • HYBRID: the system controls automatically select the most sensible operating mode with combustion engine and/or electric motor for optimising the overall energy balance
  • E-MODE: all-electric driving
  • E-SAVE: this mode preserves the current state of charge of the battery to be able to drive on all-electric power at a later time, for example in urban traffic
  • CHARGE: battery is charged while driving and when the vehicle is stationary

The compact hybrid module is fully integrated into the seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. The electrical energy is stored in a lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 8.8 kWh, which can be recharged using public charging stations, the wallbox charger at home or on a conventional 220 volt power outlet. The charging time using the wallbox charger or the charging station is around two hours.

Intelligent drive system management

The best strategy for efficient driving has always been anticipatory driving without unnecessary braking and accelerating. This is even more important in a hybrid model: because braking manoeuvres serve not only to deliver deceleration, but are also used to recover kinetic energy. The route or the traffic also has influence on the most efficient charging and discharging of the high-voltage battery. For this reason the intelligent drive system management aids the driver with specific control strategies in adopting the most efficient driving style.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Debuts With 557 HP

The new GLE 63 Coupé combines the sportiness of a coupé with the strengths of an SUV

With the new GLE 63 Coupé, Mercedes-AMG is in highly dynamic mood as it enters the 2015 automotive year. As another exciting interpretation of a four-door coupé, the commanding SUV meets the highest of standards in terms of performance, design and comfort. The powerful heart of the vehicle – the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine – beats even faster in the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé: in addition to the variant generating 410 kW (557 hp), there is also a highly sporty S‑Model to choose from which is rated at 430 kW (585 hp). The perfect prerequisites for a highly dynamic on-road driving experience come courtesy of the suspension, which has been systematically designed for a sporty performance. The high-performance SUV coupé comes with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with active roll stabilisation ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM and the Sports Direct-Steer system. The 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution and the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes promise to deliver what distinguishes every AMG vehicle: driving performance.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “We see great potential in this vehicle segment, which is new to Mercedes-AMG. The GLE 63 Coupé is the logical progression of our ambitious growth strategy – after all, in 1999 with the first high-performance SUV ML 55 AMG, we established a completely new segment. The new GLE 63 Coupé will inspire SUV fans focused on dynamics while at the same time representing a new interpretation of driving performance.”

Sportiness of a coupé, strengths of an SUV

The new GLE 63 Coupé combines the sportiness of a coupé with the strengths of an SUV. High agility, distinctive engine sound and typical sports car acceleration are united with poise and assurance, tremendous pulling power and perfect traction.

The typical SUV raised seating position and effortlessly unhurried superiority on the road, paired with typical AMG longitudinal and transverse dynamics and direct response to driver commands, result in an intense driving feel. The wide choice of different worlds of experience is based, among other things, on the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, which for the first time permit such a wide spread of driving dynamics.

The five transmission modes of “Slippery”, “Individual”, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the centre console, deliver fundamentally different driving dynamics. Be it the response of the engine, the shift strategy of the transmission, ESP® thresholds, power assistance for the steering or characteristics of the dampers: the system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters for distinct driving experiences.

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine: powerful or extra-powerful

In terms of drive system, GLE 63 Coupé customers have a choice between powerful and extra-powerful: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp) and a torque of 700 Newton-metres. The S‑Model raises the respective values to 430 kW (585 hp) and 760 Newton-metres. The difference in output and torque comes courtesy of a higher maximum charge pressure.

Whichever variant the customer opts for, the 8-cylinder powerplant, which is assembled according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy, delivers the familiar powerful performance: thus, the GLE 63 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds (S-Model). Fuel consumption values of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC (combined); CO2: 279 g/km) and compliance with the EU6 standard demonstrate that maximum power, efficiency and environmental compatibility are by no means mutually exclusive for Mercedes-AMG.

As customary for a typical AMG model, the sound from the new GLE 63 Coupé is unmistakable. Customers can further emphasise the distinctive engine sound from the sports exhaust system, because a Performance exhaust system is optionally available for both output variants. Those who value a more noticeable sound can opt for an even more emotively appealing V8 engine sound – and can experience the dynamic performance even more intensely.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Power transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

The power transmission, too, is made to measure. Depending on the mode selected for the variable dynamic handling control system DYNAMIC SELECT, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC impresses with its great agility and superior responsiveness. The transmission has a wide-ranging potential. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for a sportier driving style as well as smooth, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.

The M button allows the driver to emphasise the sporty character and to shift gear exclusively using the steering-wheel shift paddles. As the seven-speed automatic transmission now shifts independently neither on kick-down nor upon reaching the maximum engine speed limit, it is possible to savour the tremendous pulling power in all engine speed ranges. Further specialities for the dynamically focused driver: the automatic double-declutching function when shifting down and the short-term M mode, which combines the performance of manual gear changes with automatic up- and downshifts. This allows the driver to enjoy the vehicle’s impressive performance to the full. If the driver has shifted up or down manually using the shift paddle, the transmission independently switches back to the automatic shift mode after a set period of time.

The seven-speed automatic transmission features a dual-turbine torsional damper with speed-sensitive centrifugal pendulum, which minimises vibrations while enhancing the passengers’ perceived comfort.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution

With 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG uses a specially designed transfer case: this exclusive solution distributes the drive power in a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles, resulting in greater agility about the vertical axis of the vehicle. The pay-off for the driver: even greater driving pleasure during high-speed cornering. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package, consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and infinitely variable damping characteristics ADS Plus, is combined with active roll stabilisation ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. This standard-fit system employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body’s roll angle during cornering. The reduced roll angle and outstanding cornering properties make for enhanced transverse dynamics and driving pleasure. At the same time, the system provides increased driving stability and, therefore, safety, especially at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. “Sport Plus” mode puts the emphasis on maximum possible transverse dynamics. Conversely, “Comfort” mode enables maximum ride comfort.

The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability. The current operating conditions are detected via the steering angle sensor, four level sensors, three body sensors, the driving speed as well as the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

DYNAMIC SELECT changes the driving dynamics in no time at all

Perfect interplay between all systems makes for a superior experience in the cockpit – whatever the driving situation or road conditions. As an additional bonus, DYNAMIC SELECT modifies the driving dynamics in no time at all. The GLE 63 Coupé adapts its character at lightning speed, depending on which transmission mode is activated. In “Comfort” mode, the control thresholds of the dynamic handling control systems ASR, ESP® with Dynamic Cornering Assist and the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS are configured for moderate, restrained dynamics. “Sport” and “Sport Plus” permit greater longitudinal and transverse dynamics for more intense driving pleasure. In “Slippery transmission” mode, on the other hand, the focus is on optimum traction and maximum driving stability in adverse road conditions. “Individual” mode allows the driver to design their own personal set-up consisting of engine characteristics, shift strategy and damper settings.

AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system and AMG high-performance braking system

In combination with the AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system, compact Performance steering wheel, elastokinematics on the front axle and more robustly designed rear-axle stabiliser bar, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions. The variable steering ratio makes for significantly improved agility, while high-speed driving safety is maintained. The variable power assistance is dependent on the vehicle speed and the DYNAMIC SELECT programme and adapts perfectly to the driving situation.

Extremely short stopping distances and high stability: these are the strengths of the AMG high-performance braking system with all-round ventilated and perforated brake discs of size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 (rear) and silver-painted brake callipers with AMG lettering.

Design: commanding, extroverted, proud and with “A-wing”

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé skilfully embodies the firmly established principles of Mercedes-Benz design: sensuousness and clarity. The top-of-the-range V8 model from Affalterbach manages in an emotively appealing way to bring the fascination of motor sport to everyday life with a powerful dominance. A very first glance reveals the new four-door coupé to be an extrovert, proudly standing on its large wheels.

The GLE 63 Coupé is the first SUV from Affalterbach to adopt the AMG design philosophy, familiar from many other high-performance vehicles, with the characteristic “A-wing” in the front apron. This makes the SUV coupé clearly recognisable as a member of the AMG model family. Viewed from the front, the model’s sculptural design idiom is also defined by the bonnet with its two dynamic powerdomes and new radiator grille – as is typical of AMG, it features a twin louvre in silver chrome as well as a large, central Mercedes star.

The GLE 63 Coupé displays visual dominance with its “A-wing”. This design feature in the form of the stylised “A”, a hallmark of AMG, is three-dimensional and also serves as an air guide for the three air openings. The A-wing is painted in the colour of the vehicle, while the trim strip is in silver chrome. The new front view is especially characterised by the two lateral, large air inlets, while the above-positioned, black flics ensure an optimal flow of air onto the cooling modules. At the lower end of the front apron, a front splitter in the colour of the vehicle helps to reduce lift. The standard equipment package includes three-dimensionally formed LED headlamps.

Dominance is reinforced by lateral flared wheel arches

Flared wheel arches in black make for a systematic continuation of the visual dominance along the sides. Behind the wheel cutout, “V8 BITURBO” lettering points to the superior engine power of the GLE 63 Coupé. An even more distinctive look is optionally available from illuminated aluminium-look side running boards with anti-slip rubber studs. The extroverted look is enhanced by impressive AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels of size 53.3 cm (21-inch) with tyres of size 285/45 R 21 (front axle) and 325/40 R 21 (rear axle).

The rear end of the vehicle shows clear similarities with the design of the S‑Class Coupé: with its narrow tail lights in three-dimensional look, above-positioned, broad chrome badge and prominently placed Mercedes star, the GLE 63 Coupé has a decidedly sporty look. Mercedes-AMG reinforces the visual dynamics with some specific design elements: the spoiler lip on the boot lid further improves the driving stability at high speeds, while the visual, lateral air outlets in the rear apron improve the cd value. The AMG rear apron is given a dynamic look by diffuser fins and the integrated, chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims of the sports exhaust system. The shape of the silver chrome trim strip is reminiscent of the “A-wing” in the front apron. As a result of the new nomenclature, the prominent AMG lettering is placed to the left of the Mercedes star, with the model identification GLE 63 to the right.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Exterior differentiation: GLE 63 S Coupé even more impressive

The A-wing on the GLE 63 S Coupé is painted in high-gloss black. In combination with the silver-chrome trim strip and black flics, this makes for an even sportier look. AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels of size 55.9 cm (22‑inch), painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, ensure that the S‑Model exudes an even more impressive air. Optimum traction of the light-alloy wheels is guaranteed by tyres of size 285/40 R 22 (front axle) and 325/35 R 22 (rear axle). The GLE 63 S Coupé is recognisable by its red-painted brake callipers; in addition, the GLE 63 model identification bears a special “S”.

High-grade interior: exclusive design elements and appointments

Like the exterior design, the interior of the GLE 63 Coupé also boasts many exclusive design elements and appointments. High-grade materials, first-class precision and a luxurious quality feel produce a fascination potential typical of AMG. Trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium provide clever highlights.

Thanks to their specific upholstery with greater contouring and higher side bolsters at the front, the sports seats offer excellent lateral support. Perforated nappa leather, special seat upholstery layout with topstitching and AMG badges make for an exclusive look and feel, which is further complemented by the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel: the steering-wheel rim, with flattened bottom section, in black nappa leather with perforated grip area, assists a sporty driving style. Silver aluminium shift paddles with “UP” and “DOWN” lettering and a precise pressure point act as an invitation to manual gear changing.

The instrument panel on the GLE 63 Coupé is in black ARTICO man-made leather. The partially integrated central display visualises the individual DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes with animated graphics. The centre console accommodates the COMAND controller with optimally ergonomically positioned touchpad; on the right is the DYNAMIC SELECT rotary actuator for the various transmission modes. Located above is the M button for the manual transmission mode.

Instrument cluster in exciting AMG design

Two large round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4 cm (4.4-inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information. The typical AMG equipment package includes sporty dials in carbon-fibre look with 320 km/h speedometer scale and red pointers, as well as the main menu including RACETIMER, manual gear indicator and AMG start-up screen.

Optimal infotainment is guaranteed by the Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module for the use of Mercedes connect me services in Europe (may vary from country to country).

S-Model even more exclusive also in the interior

The higher-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé also offers genuine added benefits in the interior. For even more intense contact with the vehicle, the grip area of the Performance steering wheel is in DINAMICA microfibre. A sporty look also dominates the driver’s field of vision: the instrument cluster has an even higher-class look with fine red scale graduations around the speedometer and rev counter and a grey decorative band. The passengers are accommodated on high-grade exclusive nappa leather upholstery. AMG medallions in the head restraints lend the interior a special, luxurious note. Set against black interior appointments, the grey seat belts and grey contrasting topstitching produce yet further highlights.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé launches in Jurassic World

On-screen, multiple Mercedes-Benz vehicles are once again in on the Jurassic action

On-screen, multiple Mercedes-Benz vehicles are once again in on the Jurassic action. Twenty-two years since the events of the original film, Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited next installment of his groundbreaking Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World. During their adventures in the jungles of Jurassic World, the characters played by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard put their trust in the off-road capabilities of various Mercedes‑Benz vehicles – especially in the all-new GLE Coupé, which appears in its series-look for the first time.

Colin Trevorrow directs the epic action-adventure from a screenplay he wrote with Derek Connolly. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley join the team as producers. Jurassic World will be released in 3D by Universal Pictures on June 12, 2015.

The partnership continues the relationship between Universal and Mercedes-Benz, first forged in 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park, when Mercedes introduced the M‑Class vehicle.

“We are delighted to have been able to support this epic action-adventure with our vehicles,” said Dr. Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Communications for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Our wide range of SUVs in particular fit perfectly with Jurassic World’s various requirements, with the focus on our new trendsetter, the GLE Coupé.”
Above all, it is the new GLE Coupé that shows off its best side. The first prototype of this new SUV-sector vehicle, which was handmade specially for filming, can be seen in the movie, right in time for its mid-2015 market launch. The GLE 450 AMG Sport is convincing on screen in dynamic off-road scenes set against the tropical backdrop of Jurassic World. One-and-a-half years before the vehicle’s market launch, the security measures on set were huge. Even in remote filming locations on the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu and Kaua’i and on NASA terrain in New Orleans, the vehicle had to be shielded from eager photographers.

“Unveiling the new GLE Coupé in Jurassic World was a natural fit as we continue our relationship with Mercedes,” said producer Frank Marshall. “Audiences will find that the vehicles featured in the film lend themselves perfectly as the transportation of choice in the fully functioning international theme park we have created at Jurassic World.”

Alongside the Mercedes-Benz vehicles featuring in the movie, an extensive co-promotion package is planned for the cinema release.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe – Best of Two Worlds

Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle – each with its own distinct style

Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle – each with its own distinct style – to make a new model, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. The sporty nature of a coupe dominates, imbued with the striking characteristics of a robust SUV. In addition to convincing on-road vehicle dynamics, the GLE Coupe looks impressive as well. With its flowing side contour, elongated and low greenhouse, striking radiator grille with central chrome louvre and rear end design, the GLE Coupe cites styling features typical of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. In the U.S. market, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe features a biturbo V6 engine that produces 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the generous amount of standard equipment, the DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the Sports Direct-Steer system and the driver assistance systems typical of the brand, the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe comes standard with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

The GLE Coupe is the new addition to the successful portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coupes. Alongside the classic, two-door C, E and S-Class models and the four-door CLS- and CLA-Class coupes, the new coupe displays a highly individual interpretation of the physiognomy and light-footed approach typical of this family of vehicles. For example, the GLE Coupe displays attributes typical of coupes such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, while also exuding the self-assured presence, versatility and ruggedness of an SUV.

DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system: highly variable – from racy and sporty to poised and comfortable

The GLE Coupe feels like a true sports coupe. Despite the similarity to an SUV with its raised seating position and expansive all-round view, the occupants are led to believe that they are in sports rather than off-road mode. The sound is reminiscent of powerful sports cars, while the spontaneous and direct response to all commands is guaranteed to get your pulse racing. On the other hand, it can also create a superior feeling of calm, coupled with unshakeably serene driving dynamics. These two different worlds can normally only be experienced in two separate vehicles – an agile, thoroughbred sports coupe and an easy-going, comfortable SUV. But the new GLE Coupe is different: DYNAMIC SELECT enables a wide spread in the driving dynamics and combines these diametrical worlds of experience in a single vehicle – an automobile premiere.

GLE 450 AMG – the first AMG sports model

The balancing act between extremely sporty yet still comfortable has been mastered especially well in the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe. As the first AMG sports model, the V6 top-of-the-range GLE Coupe enables an attractive entry to the world of the sports car and performance brand.

“The GLE 450 AMG Coupe is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performance-oriented models will follow in the near future. The new product line from Mercedes-AMG has allowed us to make true sports car technology and the fascination of motorsports more accessible,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Every vehicle from Affalterbach honors the brand promise of Driving Performance.”

The new AMG sports models display impressive product substance and honor the promise of sports performance with a higher output class, standard all-wheel drive and also sophisticated chassis solutions. The variable dynamic control system assigns fundamentally different characteristics to the five transmission modes of INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the center console. The system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters. The names speak for themselves: SPORT and SPORT+ turn the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe into a sporty, dynamic vehicle with pronounced longitudinal and lateral dynamics. COMFORT is the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the emphasis is on the refined parameters so typical of classic Mercedes-Benz sedans, for relaxed, effortless cruising with the greatest possible energy efficiency. SLIPPERY optimizes the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, INDIVIDUAL mode enables the driver to program and store personal preferences in the individual control strategies, regardless of the engine variant.

In the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe, DYNAMIC SELECT not only modulates the “hard skills” such as the chassis and suspension, steering or powertrain. It is also possible to experience the selected mode more intensively on an emotional level because various “soft skills” such as the engine sound, instruments or dynamic control of the driving lights also vary. To this end, the nature of the various displays on the COMAND screen and in the cockpit changes according to the selected transmission mode. At the same time, the active light function of the all-LED headlamps respond more spontaneously and the engine produces the whole range of sounds from sporty and dominant to poised and restrained:

  • If the driver selects COMFORT mode, the displays take on lesser importance and, like the engine, the dial instruments such as the rev counter show a relaxed response to the driver’s commands. In combination with the comfort-oriented control of the powertrain and suspension, the result is a feel-good ambience at the level of a sedan. The engine sound is reduced to a pleasant timbre, and the feedback from the road surface and surroundings is considerably quieter in the interior.
  • Things are very different when SPORT+ mode is selected. The character changes immediately, the gear changes performed by the 9G-TRONIC are acoustically accentuated, especially when downshifting with the double-declutch function, and the cockpit instruments respond faster and more “sharply”. The large central display visualizes the longitudinal and lateral acceleration plus the steering angle with a photo-realistic motorsports graphic. The engine sound is powerful and acoustically underscores the sports mode. This setting removes any doubt: the GLE Coupe is a lively sports model of the highest order, and treats its occupants to a compelling world of experience.

A perfect combination: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission

In the new GLE Coupe, the developers were able to show the possibilities of the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission in an all-wheel drive coupe with a longitudinal drive configuration. Depending on the mode selected for the DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic handling control system, the 9G-TRONIC impresses with great agility and responsiveness or poised serenity. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting as well as gentle, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive always goes hand in hand with safe, harmonious and sporty handling. The sporty GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe offers enhanced agility and more pronounced dynamics around the car’s vertical axis with a torque split of 40:60. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes SPORT and SPORT+ deliver superior longitudinal agility and lateral dynamics – specifically as a result of the perfect interplay between the modified driving dynamics control systems ASR, ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist, the electronic traction system 4ETS and the brake control system ADAPTIVE BRAKE.

Stability pact: AIRMATIC with ADS Plus, Sports Direct-Steer and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

In addition to the ground-breaking powertrain configuration, the newly designed AIRMATIC air suspension – available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus – guarantees extremely stable driving. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. SPORT+ focuses on the greatest possible lateral dynamics with the best possible ride comfort. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride comfort with the best possible dynamics.

The current operating conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and the driving speed from the ESP® signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.

The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM with active roll stabilization is also part of the special sports systems that are activated when the driver selects SPORT or SPORT+. At the same time, the active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles raise the comfort to sedan level and compensate for even heavy, one-sided excitation – for example when driving over potholes. In combination with the newly configured, degressive Sports Direct-Steer system, whose steering ratio is very direct at 17.4:1, and the compact sports steering wheel, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions – whether manoeuvring in the city, at high speeds on the freeway, or with a swift style of driving on winding mountain passes.

Alongside the appealing design, the exceptional suspension, drive technology and assistance systems familiar from the C, E and S-Class, the GLE Coupe is also equipped with numerous standard or optional equipment details and packages to further enrich the experience.

Successful design synthesis of Coupe and SUV elements

Sensuality and clarity are the two poles that have determined the design idiom of the Mercedes-Benz brand for almost 130 years and have their origin in the nature of the two inventors of the automobile, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. Carl Benz was more rationally oriented in his behaviour, whereas Gottlieb Daimler was driven more by his passion. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe demonstrates almost ideally how this bridge between intelligence and emotion, between tradition and modernity, blends into an attractive symbiosis.

The GLE Coupe not only skilfully embodies the firmly embedded principles of Mercedes-Benz design, but also focuses on the essential features of two entirely different automobile genres. On the one hand, the youngest member of the GLE family bears the decisive, essential stylistic feature of all modern Mercedes-Benz coupes: it combines sheer sportiness with a high-level aesthetic and sensual demand for modern luxury. At the same time, elements of the classic SUV are recognizable. With muscular wings, large wheel arches, tires of up to 22 inches and also the high belt line and the generous ground clearance, this model takes the perception of a large, four-door coupe to the next level.

The extreme proportions with superior aesthetics of the new GLE Coupe have emerged from this stylistic gene pool. This is particularly due to the extremely exciting relationship between the low greenhouse and striking body; the silhouette signals dynamism and agility. The upright sports grille with single louvre, framed by three-dimensionally designed all-LED headlamps, is the major feature of the front end with its short, stylish overhang. The forward-sloping hood with its typical Mercedes power domes underscores the membership of the GLE Coupe in the line-up of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. A discreet reference to the SUV genes of the vehicle is provided by the harmoniously integrated, illuminated running boards, a typical feature of classic SUVs or off-roaders that is available as an option.

The coupe-like nature is also emphasized by the design of the rear end with its obvious elements of the design line first presented with the S-Class Coupe. The styling characteristics of this include the slim band of rear lights with their three-dimensional look, the wide chrome insert fitted above and the registration plate now incorporated into the rear bumper. Another feature that has distinguished the large coupe models from Mercedes-Benz for generations is the typical shape of the rear window which is rounded off at the top. A discreet SUV reference is made by the chrome-plated underride guard in the front and rear, here with the integrated twin tailpipe trim elements of the exhaust system.

The attractive sports seats and the compact sports steering wheel, as well as the infotainment elements familiar from the C, E and S-Class initially catch your eye in the interior. The information display, which is not entirely free-standing but partially integrated into the instrument panel, attracts attention and is fitted in an optimum ergonomic position. The center air vents, with a high-grade silver shadow frame similar to the outer vents, are positioned next to the display. The head unit has the same appearance to underline the homogeneity of the interior. The center console houses the COMAND controller with the touchpad fitted above in an optimum ergonomic position. The equipment and appointments in M-B Tex and the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium are also impressive.

The interior of the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is an impressive sight with AMG sports seats and the black nappa leather AMG sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design as well as the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium and the sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. AMG carbon-fiber trim and piano lacquer enhance the appearance of the interior as an additional option.

Attractive equipment packages and individual options

Popular equipment details are also combined in attractive packages for the GLE Coupe. The Driving Assistance package includes DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. The Parking package with 360° camera and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC guarantees an excellent overview and problem-free manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces. Night-time vision is improved by the LED Intelligent Light System which is a standard feature on all models; adverse weather conditions with impaired view are defused by MAGIC VISION CONTROL – the heated, adaptive windscreen wiper system.

The extremely large interior for a coupe provides space for up to five people. The rear seat bench in the GLE Coupe is even the widest in its class. Drivers who order the optional large panoramic glass roof are rewarded with an even greater feeling of spaciousness for all the passengers. With a maximum of over 58 cubic feet, the coupe also offers the largest luggage compartment in its class and just happens to hold the world record for luggage compartments in coupes.

COMAND offers perfect infotainment with an 8-inch TFT display and intuitive touchpad. The system also includes a DVD player. If required, the customer can equip COMAND Online with a Rear Seat Entertainment System with remote control or Bang & Olufsen BeoSound sound system.

Well worth a look: color and material combinations for the GLE Coupe

There are almost limitless possibilities when it comes to customization of the GLE Coupe, and the equipment packages again play an important role. A Night package is available, in which the louvre in the radiator grille and the exterior mirror housings are in high-gloss black. At the same time, the wide selection of solid and metallic paints and the almost limitless possibilities for interior design increase the potential for individual customization. A total of 11 paint finishes are available, of which seven are metallic colours and two are special paint finishes with special-effect pigments in designo diamond white or designo hyacinth red metallic.

The interior radiates modern luxury and can be given a design ranging from ambitious and sporty to classic and elegant, depending on personal taste. The scope here ranges from single-tone black interior appointments to various combinations in which black is used with ginger beige, crystal grey, saddle brown or porcelain. The interior of the GLE Coupe is particularly impressive in two-tone designo exclusive nappa leather in porcelain/black. The designo Exclusive nappa leather option brings even more luxury: seats with diamond-pattern stitching, instrument panel and door panelling in designo leather and the black DINAMICA roof liner provide for even more exclusive travel.

Depending on personal preference, the trim elements shine in light longitudinal-grain aluminium, brown open-pore ash wood, brown eucalyptus wood, dark-graphite poplar wood or black AMG carbon fiber/piano lacquer.

Connect four

The Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC success story began in 1985. The all-wheel drive presented in an E-Class was the first automatically controlled drive system in a premium vehicle. The customer was able to choose between six different models. Nowadays, around 30 years later, the portfolio of passenger cars with all-wheel drive has grown to include more than 70 models in 18 model series. From the C to the G-Class, each model receives a tailored 4MATIC solution – to match each different vehicle character.

The AMG sports models such as the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe receive a performance-oriented 4MATIC drive system which sends the drive torque more towards the rear axle – unlike in the standard model. This distinctly rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment.

“G” to the fore: the new SUV nomenclature

The premiere of the GLE Coupe restructures the successful SUV range from Mercedes-Benz. The system centers around the five core model series, A, B, C, E and S, which will continue to be used to provide orientation for our customers. In the case of the model designations for the SUVs, in a tribute to the legendary G-Class, all SUV models will in future have the first two letters “GL” in their name. The “G” here denotes the car’s lineage. The “L” is a letter that appears time and time again over the history of Mercedes-Benz: it is a linking letter that makes the model designations easier to remember and easier to pronounce; one that is familiar from the legendary SL, for example, or from the more recent CLS and CLA. It is followed by the third letter, which indicates the relationship to the relevant core model series.

In specific terms:

GLA SUV in the A-Class segment
GLC SUV in the C-Class segment; formerly GLK
GLE SUV in the E-Class segment; formerly M-Class
GLE Coupé SUV in the E-Class Coupé segment
GLS SUV in the S-Class segment; formerly GL
G unchanged

The different types of engine are indicated by a lower-case letter.

January Debut for the GLE Coupe

Mercedes-AMG will introduce the GLE 63 AMG Coupe on January 12 during the first press day of the North American International Auto Show

German media is reporting Mercedes-Benz will introduce the GLE 63 AMG Coupe at NAIAS later this month.

Mercedes GLE Coupe

Mercedes GLE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the GLE Coupe approximately three weeks ago but without showing the flagship AMG version as the hottest model presented was the GLE 450 AMG. It has a twin-turbo V6 3.0-liter engine generating 367 HP (270 kW) and 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of torque but it will be dethroned by the full-blown AMG model which according to the report will borrow the V8 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine from the AMG GT and C63.

There’s no word about output figures but we remind you in the AMG GT it delivers 462 HP & 600 Nm while in the AMG GT S it’s rated at 510 HP & 650 Nm. When installed in the aforementioned C63 AMG, it outputs 476 HP & 650 Nm but you can also get it with 510 HP & 700 Nm in the C63 S.

If the report is valid, Mercedes-AMG will introduce the GLE 63 AMG Coupe on January 12 during the first press day of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Since the regular GLE Coupe is expected to hit dealerships in the following spring, its AMG sibling should arrive shortly thereafter.
