Mercedes-Benz Classics Brought to to the ice in St. Moritz

The International Concours of Elegance in St. Moritz is an annual event that celebrates the beauty and elegance of classic cars

The International Concours of Elegance in St. Moritz is an annual event that celebrates the beauty and elegance of classic cars. It takes place in the Swiss Alpine resort of St. Moritz, and it features a selection of the world’s most beautiful and rare automobiles.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the most prestigious automakers in the world, and it has a long and rich history of producing some of the most beautiful and technologically advanced cars of all time. The Mercedes-Benz 600 and 300 SLS are two classic Mercedes-Benz models that have been highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts for many years.

“The ‘Grand Mercedes’ 600 – the exclusive vehicle of great prestige”: With this headline, the Mercedes-Benz press release for the premiere in September 1963 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main positioned the Mercedes-Benz 600 among the leaders in the automotive industry. Some of its highlights: the first V8 engine in a Mercedes-Benz car, performance on a par with a sports car, many hydraulically-controlled convenience features for seat adjustment, opening and closing of doors, windows and boot lid. Added to this were air suspension, power steering and a central locking system as well as an electronically-controlled heating and ventilation system. All things considered, the equipment was unique at the time and was considered state-of-the-art during that period. Internally known as the W 100, the luxury saloon held its position as the international benchmark of the top automotive category for almost two decades. During the 17-year construction period, 2,677 examples were built, 487 as Pullman versions. The V8 engine with a displacement of 6.3 litres produced 184 kW (250 hp). Buyers from all over the world opted for the “600”: Royal highnesses, heads of state and equally outstanding personalities from the worlds of business and show business.

The Mercedes-Benz 600 was a luxurious limousine that was produced from 1963 to 1981. It was the company’s flagship model and featured a range of advanced features, including air suspension, power windows, and a hydraulic system that powered everything from the brakes to the seats.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1957, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 300 SL Roadster (W 198) as the successor to the 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupé of the same model series, which had made its debut in 1954. On a technical level, the open-top sports car was very much like the coupé, although the modified roll cage now allowed the installation of conventionally hinged doors. These were necessary for open-top driving and were more convenient when getting in and out. The chassis had also been evolved further: The single-joint swing axle with a lowered pivot point was used instead of the classic two-joint design, and the 300 SL Roadster had a compensating spring for the first time. From autumn 1958 onwards, the Roadster was also available on request with a detachable hardtop. It was from the standard 300 SL Roadster that Mercedes-Benz engineers developed the 300 SLS racing variant with which Paul O’Shea won Category D of the American Sports Car Championship in 1957. This completed the circle, as the 300 SL was based on the racing car of the same name (W 194), which was used very successfully in motorsport in the 1952 season. In 1961 the 300 SL Roadster was provided with disc brakes, and in 1962 with a cast-aluminium crankcase. Production of the sports car continued until 1963. A total of 1,858 examples of the highly exclusive sports car were built over seven years. Today it is one of the most sought-after classics.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLS was a racing car that was based on the legendary 300 SL. It was produced in the 1950s and was a highly successful racer, winning many races and championships.

Both of these classic Mercedes-Benz models are highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts, and it is not surprising that they would be featured at an event like the International Concours of Elegance in St. Moritz.

2019 Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance celebrates the Mercedes-Benz SSKL streamlined racing car from 1932

The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance celebrates the Mercedes-Benz SSKL streamlined racing car from 1932: it will be possible to experience this milestone in automotive history on the road for the first time at the drive for outstanding classics on Thursday, 15 August 2019. Mercedes-Benz Classic has spared no expense in having the vehicle reconstructed for the “125 Years of Motorsport” anniversary. Alongside the unique SSKL, an elegant Mercedes-Benz 320 n combination coupé (W 142) from 1938 will be taking part in the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

A dream car on a dream road: at 7 a.m., the participating vehicles line up on the Portola Road in Pebble Beach. From 9 a.m., the exclusive drive begins, leading to Carmel-by-the-Sea. The tour will arrive back at Pebble Beach by around 2 p.m. The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance partially follows the legendary 17 Mile Drive coastal route of the Californian peninsula of Monterey.

On 22 May 1932, Manfred von Brauchitsch won the Avus race in Berlin in a Mercedes-Benz SSKL with streamlined body and thereby set a class world record with an average speed of 194.4 km/h over a distance of 200 kilometres. In 2019, Mercedes-Benz Classic reconstructed the vehicle with a high level of historical authenticity. Photo from Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019.

Tradition of luxurious sportiness

With the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge, the brand is presenting the topics of origin, luxury and “125 Years of Motorsport” at Pebble Beach from 15 to 18 August 2019, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The sportiness in the history of the oldest luxury car brand in the world is brought to life, from 1886 right into the future.

The central “Origins” exhibition area shows an authentic replica of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen – it stands for the birth of the car in 1886 from the spirit of innovation. The Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp from 1903 is a representative of the family of the first modern car in the world and a high-performance vehicle of its time. The current Mercedes-Benz EQC Edition 1886 (combined electrical consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2emissions: 0 g/km*) – much like the Mercedes-Simplex almost 120 years before it – symbolises the beginning of a new era of mobility and carries the values and strengths of Mercedes-Benz on into the future.

The “Luxury” area stands for the tradition of the highest standards in equipment, comfort, performance and design. Here, the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge bridges the gap from the current Mercedes-Maybach luxury top models to the Maybach DS 8 Cabriolet from 1932. The topic of automotive luxury as a theme of the Mercedes-Benz brand history reflects the spirit of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and its supporting programme over the entire Automotive Week.

“125 Years of Motorsport” anniversary year

The focus of the presence at Pebble Beach is the “125 Years of Motorsport” anniversary. One of the stars is, of course, the Mercedes-Benz SSKL streamlined racing car. On 15 August, spectators will experience its premiere on a public road. As an exhibition in the Star Lounge, the aerodynamically encased racing car also meets a Daimler two-cylinder V-engine, which represents the beginning of motorsport. Vehicles equipped with engines of this type won in the first car competition in history 125 years ago – the race from Paris to Rouen on 22 July 1894.

Further automotive contemporary witnesses from 125 Years of Motorsport in the Star Lounge include a Mercedes-Benz 3-litre W 154 Formula racing car from 1939, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR racing sports car (W 196 S) from 1955, a Sauber-Mercedes C 9 Group-C racing sports car from 1989 and the Penske-Mercedes PC-23 IndyCar from 1994. A comprehensive presentation of the latest high-performance vehicles by Mercedes-AMG perfectly rounds off the topic of sportiness.

Magic moments in California

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is one of the outstanding dates on the worldwide calendar of automotive classics. This competition for automotive elegance has been held since 1950 – back then with new vehicles and in association with the Pebble Beach Road Race. Since 1955, collector’s cars have been the focus of the Concours d’Elegance.

Today, the Concours, in which around 200 exquisite cars from all around the world take part, is the conclusion and highlight of the Pebble Beach Automotive Week with its comprehensive programme. The actual competition with the presentation at the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links takes place on Sunday 18 August 2019, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Spectacular “missing link”

The top-class classic car event is an impressive stage for the driving premiere of the Mercedes-Benz SSKL Avus racing car at the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance. This spectacular vehicle, which will be subsequently presented in the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge, connects the era of the mighty compressor racing sports cars of the 1920s and the epoch of the legendary Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows of the 1930s.

The aerodynamics pioneer Reinhard von Koenig-Fachsenfeld (1899 to 1992) designed a trailblazing streamlined body for the powerful Mercedes-Benz SSKL compressor racing car in 1932. On 22 May 1932, Manfred von Brauchitsch entered the important international Avus race in Berlin with this vehicle which was unusual to spectators of the time (the public promptly dubbed it “gherkin”) and won ahead of Rudolf Caracciola in an Alfa Romeo.

Mercedes-Benz Classic has reconstructed the innovative “silver arrow”, as it was described in a radio report at the time, from 1932, with the highest level of authenticity. This includes the lightening holes in the chassis, typical of the SSKL, which were undertaken according to the original drawings. In total, the racing car weighs 125 kilograms less than the Mercedes-Benz SSK, which served as its basis. The complete reconstruction of the streamlined body according to historical documents was particularly laborious. For this purpose, the experts researched the archives of Mercedes-Benz Classic and those at Schloss Fachsenfeld, which the engineer and inventor Reinhard von Koenig-Fachsenfeld transferred to a foundation in 1982.

The victory of the Avus racing car in 1932 is one of the milestones in 125 Years of Motorsport at Mercedes-Benz. It was back then that the aerodynamic optimisation was established in motorsport. The brand is commemorating this at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance with the driving premiere and presentation.

Daimler two-cylinder V-engine (1894)

Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge

The V-twin engine Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed in 1888 formed the drivetrain of the “Daimler Motor-Quadricycle”, also known as the “Stahlradwagen” (steel-wheeled car), a vehicle showcased at the Paris Exhibition in 1889. In 1894, this engine also formed the basis for the origins of motorsport: at the Paris-Rouen race, the world’s first motorcar competition in July 1894, vehicles by Peugeot and Panhard & Levassor won first prize – and they repeated their success in June 1895 at the first “real” race from Paris to Bordeaux and back to Paris, which included speed ratings. The winning cars featured the V-twin engine designed by Daimler and Maybach, which was manufactured by Panhard & Levassor under licence. The engine installed in the Daimler “steel-wheeled car” originally had an output of 1.1 kW (1.5 hp) and an engine size of 565 cc. Later variants, such as those used in the first races, delivered up to 2.75 kW (3.75 hp) from engines up to 1,646 cc.

Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp (1903)

Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge

The Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp was launched in March 1902, superseding the legendary Mercedes 35 hp. The suffix “Simplex” was intended to indicate how easy the new model was to operate for its time. Its direct predecessor was the first to define the motorcar’s distinctive shape. Characteristic features included the long wheelbase, the light and powerful engine installed low down and the honeycomb radiator integrated organically into the front end, which was to become distinctive for the brand. The Mercedes 35 hp marked the end of the “horse-drawn carriage” style which had dominated the industry and it is thus considered to be the first modern car. The “Mercédès era” ushered in by this was characterised by a passion for innovation, visionary drive and technical creativity. There is a parallel here to today: Mercedes-Benz is now once again applying the same values to advance the future of mobility. Like the very first Mercedes, the EQC and future EQ models are fundamentally designed to make optimum use of an innovative drive concept – in this case, the electric drive. Delivered in 1903, the white example from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection is one of the oldest, preserved vehicles bearing the Mercedes brand. It shows the future of the car as it was presented at the start of the 20th century.

Mercedes-Benz SSKL streamlined racing car (W 06, 1932)

Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge and Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance

The SSKL, of which only four were built in 1931, was a pure competition vehicle and signalled the crowning end of the development of the Mercedes-Benz S series (W 06) with types S, SS and SSK. Aerodynamics specialist Baron Reinhard von Koenig-Fachsenfeld designed a streamlined body for the SSKL to be driven by racing driver Manfred von Brauchitsch. The body was made of aluminium by Vetter in Cannstatt and mounted on von Brauchitsch’s car. At the Avus race in May 1932, the modification had an overwhelming effect: the streamlined Avus racing car had 25 per cent less drag than an SSKL with the classic body, giving it an increased top speed which was 20 km/h higher than usual. Manfred von Brauchitsch won the race in the futuristic looking car ahead of the previous year’s winner, Rudolf Caracciola. Mercedes-Benz Classic will present an authentic reconstruction of the car, the original of which no longer exists, to the public for the first time in 2019 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Mercedes-Benz 320 n combination coupé (W 142, 1938)

Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance

Mercedes-Benz presented the 57 kW (78 hp) type 320 (W 142) in 1937. The comfortable and powerful six-cylinder model of the luxury class was built in two wheelbases and countless body variants – just like the type 290 (W 18) did before it, which it replaced. Mercedes-Benz only produced the shorter type 320 n with a 2,880 millimetre wheelbase for two years, whilst the type 320 with a 3,300 millimetre wheelbase was built until 1942 (with a 3.4-litre engine from 1939). The 320 n combination coupé presented itself as a sportily elegant version of the W 142 model series – just like the Cabriolet A which was also available. At its market launch it had a list price of 12,300 marks and was therefore around 3,300 marks more expensive than the saloon with a sliding sunroof. Back then, the term combination coupé described a cabriolet with a detachable hardtop. The vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection, which is taking part in the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, underlines the aspiration of automotive elegance with the two-colour paint finish in red and black.

Also representing the long tradition of premium and luxury class vehicles at Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes Classic will also be exhibiting a 24/40 hp Benz landaulet that dates back to 1907.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Élégance is to be held at the Pebble Beach Golf Links course in California with the classic event staged for the 18th green. The Concours d’Élégance is a weekend completely dedicated to elegant, refined, and outstanding cars. It is a place for fans, experts, and collectors of classic cars, with so much going on, a must on your calendar are the exclusive auctions that are great to watch even if you aren’t bidding.

Mercedes-Benz has enjoyed a long tradition of success at the top-class event celebrated under the hot Californian sun: since 1950, the brand’s long list of awards have included several overall victories in the “Best of Show” category as well as more than 120 class victories and special prizes. Last year too saw a Mercedes-Benz pick up the coveted title of “Best of Show” in the guise of a Mercedes-Benz Saoutchik S Type. Designed by French coachbuilder Jacques Saoutchik, the car first shipped in 1928. The S Type’s “torpedo” bodywork with low windscreen captured the hearts of the judges so much so that it was named the finest vehicle on display at the competition.

“Prinz Heinrich” Benz from 1910

This year Mercedes-Benz Classic is bringing a representative of the very early days of motor racing to the USA: a “Prinz-Heinrich” Benz dating from 1910, which Mercedes-Benz Classic has faithfully restored to the very highest standards of authenticity. More than 100 years old, the vehicle is a fascinating contemporary witness of the motor sport innovations of the early 1900s. In terms of technology, this Benz model combines everything that was, and today still is, deemed to be high-tech in the field of automotive engineering, including dual ignition and four-valve technology.

In its day, the “Prinz-Heinrich Fahrt” (Prince Heinrich Tour), named after the brother of the German Emperor, was one of the most prominent automobile races in Europe. The “Kaiserlicher Automobil-Club” (German Imperial Automobile Club) staged the event between 1908 and 1910, and only permitted four-seater production vehicles to take part – so strictly no racing cars.

For the 1910 Tour, which was staged between 2 and 8 June of that year and covered a total distance of 1,945 kilometres from Berlin to Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in Hesse – via Brunswick, Kassel, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Strasbourg, and Metz – no less than ten all-new special touring cars were built. Four of them had 5.7-litre engines while the other six had engines with a displacement of 7.3 litres. All the touring cars were equipped with cardan shaft drive and featured a streamlined body with a characteristic pointed rear.

This dark green Benz special touring car with race number 38, only presented in February after being extensively restored to its original condition by Mercedes-Benz Classic, is considered to be the first true sports car by many automobile historians. It is one of only two known vehicles in the world produced by Benz for the Prince Heinrich Tour of 1910 that have survived in their original form since their first race more than 100 years ago. The vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection finished in 11th place at the time, and then in the same year also took part in the Tsar Nicholas Tour. To this day the racing car still has the modified engine – with a displacement reduced to 5.4 litres – with which it was fitted for this race in Russia.

24/40 hp Benz landaulet from 1907

The second vehicle to be presented by Mercedes-Benz Classic at Pebble Beach is a 24/40 hp Benz landaulet. This vehicle stands in the long tradition of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which dates back to the start of the 20th century. Since that time, the product line of the brands Mercedes and Benz – from 1926 Mercedes-Benz – has always comprised outstanding premium- and luxury-class models. They represent innovative, visionary automotive technology, generating the driving force for entire automotive development.

The 24/40 hp model was produced at Benz in the first decade of the last century as part of a whole series of newly developed products with 28, 35, 40 and 45 hp (21, 26, 29 and 33 kW) engines. They all featured a variety of technical features: they all had a four-cylinder engine with cylinders cast together in pairs. The laterally positioned camshaft was driven via spur gears. Two spark plugs per cylinder drew their current via magneto ignition. The four-speed transmission was operated via a sliding shift mechanism. Despite being optionally available with cardan shaft drive system, the power of the 24/40 hp model from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection is still delivered to the rear wheels via chains.

As was usual for that period, different body variants were available – hence also a landaulet version. The driver was left to sit out in the open, with little protection, while in inclement weather the ladies and gentlemen were able to sit beneath a well-upholstered folding roof. The vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Classic collection was originally delivered to the south of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where it remained in service until 1966.

The 2013 GL-Class goes on sale in the U.S. in September 2012.

The Legacy Continues, 60 Years of SL History
In 1952 the DNA of the SL Roadster was formed in the W194 race car and a storied legacy was underway:

  • 1954: the W198-series 300SL “Gullwing” Coupe, the production version of the legendary W194 race car and the world’s first car with fuel injection.
  • 1957: the W198-series 300SL Roadster, the convertible sports car brethren of 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe.
  • 1963: the W113 series 230SL arrived on the scene. It was dubbed the “Pagoda” because of the characteristic shape of its hardtop roof.

Mercedes-Benz at 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Mercedes-Benz Classic and MBUSA will be showing off their finest vehicles at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 21

Mercedes-Benz Classic and Mercedes-Benz USA will be showing off some of their finest vehicles at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 21, 2011. This year’s Concours d’Elegance is marked among other things by the 125 years of the automobile anniversary. To commemorate this anniversary, a replica of the Benz Patent Motor Car of 1886 will be on display . As in past years, this years Pebble Beach Concours includes a drive and an auction, all dedicated to the most elegant, most outstanding automobiles.

Since 1950, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, has been the preeminent showcase for automotive elegance internationally. The enthusiasm and passion of collectors from all over the world who strive to be successful here with their cars is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Since the event was initiated, Mercedes-Benz vehicles have had a regular spot on the lawn in front of the lodge. In addition to more than 120 class victories and special prizes, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz have won the “Best of Show” award several times.

This year, during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance a number of outstanding vehicles will be presented to the international audience. The Mercedes racing car designed by Wilhelm Maybach in 1906 was one of the most advanced vehicles of its day and features forward-looking details: for instance its six-cylinder engine has overhead camshafts, overhead valves and a dual high-voltage spark plug ignition. Because of its frame design the vehicle has a very low centre of gravity.

The 200 hp Benz of 1909 was given the byname “Blitzen Benz” – Lightning Benz – because of its outstanding performance. Among other things it was the first petrol-powered automobile in the world to post speeds over 200 km/h. The vehicle shown in Pebble Beach is a faithful reproduction using an authentic engine.

Of the supercharged six-cylinder sports cars of the Mercedes-Benz S series, the SSK (W 06 series) is the most exclusive and fascinating model. The model designation stands for “Super-Sport-Kurz” (super-sport-short) and besides emphasising the car’s special sportiness also indicates its shortened wheelbase. The SSK dominated the international motorsport scene in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Special exhibition “125 years inventor of the automobile”

In addition, Mercedes-Benz USA is organising an exhibition in its pavilion at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to mark the “125 years inventor of the automobile” anniversary. A replica of the Benz Patent Motor Car of 1886 will be on display there, a so-called American Mercedes (1905), a Silver Arrow W 154 Grand Prix racing car (1939), a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” (W 198, 1954), a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE (W 180, 1958) and a Mercedes-Benz 600 (W 100, 1969). The “Aesthetics 125!” sculpture created by Mercedes-Benz Design opens a window on the future of the brand. Concept car versions of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and the next generation of the A-Class represent the more immediate future. And the F-Cell Roadster shows how Carl Benz perhaps would have built his Patent

Mercedes-Benz at the 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

The 2010 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance took place over the weekend, and we've got some 200 photos from the event

The 2010 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance took place over the weekend, and if you weren’t in attendance, don’t worry – we’ve got some 200 photos from the event.  Mercedes-Benz models on display included the new SLS AMG Gullwing Coupe, the SLR 722 Edition, the legendary Le Mans-winning 1952 300 SL and a 1956 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe, just to name a few.  The event marked 15 years of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and if you’ve never witnessed it in person, it truly is a site to behold.  To get a firsthand look at the festivities and to persuade you to consider attending next year’s Concours d’Elegance, view the exceptionally lengthy gallery below.

Amelia Island Concours D’elegance Celebrates Mercedes-Benz Marque

Mercedes-Benz, founding sponsor of The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, celebrates 15 years of support at the Ritz-Carlton

Mercedes-Benz, founding sponsor of The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, celebrates 15 years of supporting one of the nation’s most innovative vintage car shows featuring over 250 rare classics from seldom-seen private collections nationwide. The Concours takes place on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island from March 12-14, 2010.

Marking the 15th anniversary of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, Mercedes-Benz will feature a collection of iconic as well as all-new vehicles including the legendary Le Mans-winning 1952 300 SL and 1956 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe, along with the 2011 SLS AMG.

“The SLS AMG and Gullwing displays at the 15th anniversary of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance are top examples of Mercedes-Benz historical significance and major contributions with the automobile industry,” said Stephen Cannon, VP of Marketing, MBUSA. “The iconic 1954 Gullwing represents the leading innovation Mercedes-Benz is known for throughout history and the SLS AMG sets a new standard for supercars of the future just like the 300 SL did over 50 years ago.”

Unveiled in 1954 at the “International Motor Sports Show” in New York, the 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe, a road version of the 300 SL competition car was the first true post-war sports car developed by Daimler-Benz. Production started late in 1954 and over the course of three years only 1400 examples were built. The 300 SL continues to be sought after by collectors for its iconic design and technical innovation.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL competition car, internally known as the W 194, was built in approximately nine months and marked the debut of the “SL” designation denoting both Sport and Light. The tubular space frame was an epoch-making design. Consisting of an extremely light design, the frame was raised at the side to achieve optimum strength – a design that necessitated the use of the now legendary gullwing doors. A race team consisting of Hermann Lang and Fritz Reiss drove the 300 SL to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June of 1952, the first time a German car achieved this result. The W 194 on display is courtesy of Fastwelve LLC in Portland, Oregon.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is the first vehicle entirely designed by AMG. The limited production vehicle features gullwing doors; an AMG 6.3-liter, front-mid V8 engine with a maximum power of 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It is not just the doors that draw inspiration from the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, but also the wide grille complete with a large Mercedes star and the wing-like crossbar. The sculptured front with its low, v-shaped front skirt and lateral indentations gives the SLS a powerful stance on the road. The SLS AMG will serve as the safety car for the 2010 Formula One season.

On display at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island is Mercedes-Benz newest addition to the successful 9th generation of the E-Class family. The E-Class Cabriolet is a two-door, four-seat, drop-top version of the stylish E-Class Coupe introduced in mid-2009. Arriving at dealerships in May 2010, the vehicle features the world’s-first AIRCAP®, a feature that reduces cabin turbulence and wind draft for all seat occupants with the push of a button. This innovation combined with the AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system allows for top-down driving during all four seasons.
