Unveiling the Ultimate Blend of Luxury and Performance: The Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet

Press Release – February 05, 2024

With the new CLE Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of four-seater open-top dream cars. Expressive design, intelligent technology and upmarket equipment guarantee driving pleasure at an exclusive level. This new model is based on the sporty CLE Coupé. However, the classic fabric acoustic soft top and additional high-quality details give it a character of its own. The CLE Cabriolet combines dynamic driving characteristics with a high level of everyday comfort for year-round open-air enjoyment. It is now available to order from sales partners in Germany and online at prices starting at 66,402 euros[1]. Market launch in Europe begins at the end of April 2024, with other markets to follow.

Open-air fun any time of year

The AIRCAP® electric wind deflector system and the AIRSCARF® headroom heating system are standard equipment. Both systems have been further developed. They make open-top driving in cool outside temperatures more pleasant. AIRCAP® consists of two elements: the wind deflector on the windscreen directs airflow over the occupants’ heads. It extends at the touch of a button. The automatic wind deflector behind the rear head restraints reduces turbulence more efficiently. AIRSCARF® produces even warmer airflow around the necks and throats of front-seat occupants – even in unfavourable wind conditions.

The standard-fit fabric acoustic soft top also contributes to the year-round usability of the CLE Cabriolet. It is available in the colours black, red or grey. The multi-layer structure with extensive insulation provides the basis for the best thermal comfort in all seasons. It also reduces wind and driving noise. The soft top opens and closes within 20 seconds up to a road speed of 60 km/h. For the first time, it is powered exclusively by electricity, making it even quieter. The standard-fit powered roller divider automatically separates the folded soft top from the remaining luggage compartment.

Sporty luxury in a class of its own

The freestanding 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display and the 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display in portrait format are eye-catchers in the interior. The latter can be electrically tilted from 15 to 40 degrees to prevent distracting glare when the soft top is down. Another highlight is the optional dynamic ambient lighting. Bands of light sweep from the cockpit over the doors and rear side panels to behind the rear seats. This stylish wraparound feel is enhanced by two further details: the top of the dashboard, the beltlines and the soft-top stowage lid are upholstered in black man-made nappa leather effect. Added to this is the chrome trim that runs around the entire passenger compartment.

To prevent the optional leather seats from heating up too much in the summer, they have a special coating which reflects the sun’s near-infrared rays. As a result, the leather remains up to 12 degrees cooler in direct sunlight than untreated standard leather. Even with the top closed, the interior heats up less thanks to the cool seat covers. The choice of colours offered for the sun-reflecting leather and nappa leather are: black, macchiato beige/black, tonka brown/black, power red/black and white/black. The standard AVANTGARDE Line offers ARTICO/MICROCUT man-made leather in black.

The front seats developed exclusively for the CLE have an integral sports seat design. In conjunction with the optional Burmester® 3D surround sound system, they each have two loudspeakers level with the head restraints. This creates a particularly personalised and immersive music experience with Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio close to the ear. This premium sound system has a total of 17 loudspeakers.

Generous space inside

As the largest convertible in the mid-size segment, the sporty two-door model offers a high level of long-distance comfort for four people. The dimensions are: 4,850 millimetres long, 1,861 millimetres wide, 1,424 millimetres high and a wheelbase of 2,865 millimetres. Rear passengers in particular benefit from the extra 25 millimetres on the wheelbase. Among other things, they have 72 millimetres more knee room and 19 millimetres more shoulder and elbow room. This makes the vehicle significantly more spacious than the C-Class Cabriolet.

With a volume of 385 litres (295 litres with the top down), the boot is extremely practical for everyday use. If required, this is extendable using the folding rear seat backrests. Customers can conveniently fold them down from the boot in a 60:40 split. Access to the luggage compartment is contactless and fully automatic with HANDS-FREE ACCESS. KEYLESS-GO is also part of standard equipment. The vehicle doors lock and unlock by touching the door handle.

Exceptionally interactive and customised

The entertainment offering is highly interactive and personalised. The third generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system enables third-party apps[2] such as the “TikTok” entertainment platform, the “Zoom” videoconferencing system or the “Audials”, a provider of internet radio and podcasts. The MBUX Entertainment package is optionally available via the Mercedes me Store. It includes internet radio, music streaming[3] and a data package from a selected third-party provider.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX also offers a new level of personalisation with automated convenience functions. At market launch, customers will be able to use templates for standard routines. Examples include “Cold days” (seat heating switches on at a certain outside temperature) or “Date night” (romantic music plays via Bluetooth audio; the ambient lighting turns pink). Users access the templates via a carousel in the central display. They can also create their own routines, by linking several functions and conditions. They do this on the central display and the resulting routines appear under the “My routines” menu heading.

Dynamic and comfortable driving experience with a powerful, top-of-the-range six-cylinder engine

The chassis of the new CLE Cabriolet enables driving pleasure on winding roads. At the same time, it offers exceptional ride comfort on long journeys. The comfort suspension, which has been lowered by 15 millimetres, is fitted as standard. It combines a supremely comfortable ride with responsive, sporty handling. A sports suspension with an amplitude-selective damping system is available as an option. The optional DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension facilitates a highly adjustable driving experience ranging from extremely sporty to comfortable through continuous, adaptive damping front and rear. The active suspension individually controls the damping characteristics for each wheel in conjunction with the engine, transmission and steering characteristics. This takes into account the driving situation, speed and road conditions. The DYNAMIC SELECT switch gives the driver a choice between a comfortable or firmer, sportier setup.

All engines are mild hybrids. Each has an integrated starter-generator and 48-volt on-board electrical system. The line-up offers a choice of four-cylinder units as well as a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine at the top end of the power spectrum (Mercedes‑Benz CLE 450 4MATIC, WLTP: combined fuel consumption: 8.5‑7.9 l/100 km, combined CO₂ emissions: 192‑180 g/km)[4].

Mercedes-AMG CLE Convertible Spied For The Very First Time

this is our first look at a more potent derivative of the alleged CLE

Remember those rumors from approximately six years ago about the Mercedes CLS being renamed CLE for its current generation? That obviously didn’t happen as the swoopy sedan still carries the same name it had at its baptism back in 2004. However, CLE is once again making the headlines as reports state it will be used to simplify the C-Class and E-Class lineups. How? By merging the pair of two-door models into a single coupe and cabrio.

Mercedes-AMG CLE Convertible

Mercedes-AMG CLE Convertible

We’ve been spying on the alleged CLE for a while now, but this is our first look at a more potent derivative. Caught undergoing testing in snowy Sweden, the prototype is likely of the AMG variety judging by the larger wheels hosting upsized brakes. The sporty convertible must have a stiffer suspension because it seems to be riding closer to the road, but the biggest giveaway is at the rear.

Time will tell whether the three-pointed star will use the CLK recipe by combining the design of the E-Class with the underpinnings of the inferior C-Class.

Previous test vehicles had their exhaust tucked away under the bumper, but this one is not afraid to flaunt it. There are only two circular tips, although the cutouts in the bumper are considerably larger. It could be a sign the potential AMG CLE lacked the final setup, presumably a more menacing quad arrangement.

It’s fairly easy to see the car is a diamond in the rough since it’s missing the final taillights and rides on mismatched wheels. The headlights also seem to be provisional and we’re wondering why the disguise on the fabric roof has those protuberances that look like air vents. There’s not much to say about the design since Mercedes made sure to thoroughly disguise its new convertible.

Time will tell whether the three-pointed star will use the CLK recipe by combining the design of the E-Class with the underpinnings of the inferior C-Class. Although only the convertible has been spotted so far, it likely won’t be long before our spies will stumble upon the coupe as well. Looking at this prototype, it tells us an official reveal is unlikely to occur until early 2023.

If it will indeed be based on the C-Class, both AMG flavors will make do with four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive because the V8 RWD formula died with the W205.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

The elegant cabriolet is set to make its debut at the Monterey Car Week, which will take place on the Monterey Peninsula in California between 15 and 20 August 2017. The final event will be the traditional Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which this year takes place on 20 August.

“The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet takes modern luxury into the realms of the ultimate in luxury, and is the perfect embodiment of our design strategy. Breathtaking proportions combined with a luxurious “haute couture” interior help to create the ultimate experience,” explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Daimler AG.

Exterior: powerful structural elements with sharp feature line

Measuring almost six metres in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet incorporates the classic proportions of art deco design with its extremely long bonnet and puristic, flowing lines, and at the same time completely reinterprets these aesthetic principles. The curved basic body boasts a sporty, stretched design which is characterised by powerful structural elements in conjunction with the sharp feature line. This side feature line defines the upper vehicle body, from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle through to the rear.

The strong contrast between the dark blue paintwork in “nautical blue metallic” and the chrome highlights increases the fascinating relationship between the clearly defined areas with organically shaped wings and the chrome trim elements, which sit at the top on the edge of the wing as well as in the middle on the boot lid, where they also incorporate the vertical brake lights. This benefits the interpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille, which with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

The newly designed 24-inch light-alloy wheels feature a centre lock. This is painted in rose gold and as such reflects the colour shade used on all electric vehicle studies from Mercedes-Benz.

The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet’s rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lights which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. Further distinctive features at the rear include the diffuser with aluminium frame and the air outlets behind the wheel arches.

The transition between the vehicle rear, the area of the boot lid and the interior boasts a flowing design. Crystal white high-quality nappa leather creates an exciting contrast to the dark paint finish. The custom-made fabric top with interwoven rose gold threads has been perfectly coordinated with the look of the vehicle.

Interior: 360° open-air luxury lounge

With the luxurious interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz demonstrates a new synthesis of intelligence and emotion. At the same time, the designers have combined the unique tradition of the brand with a hitherto unknown high-tech experience.

The generous, flowing design idiom brings exterior and interior together in a holistic design. The formal flow of the areas from the rear into the interior gives rise to a typical yacht feeling. A light wing flows in a curve across the door trim and the centre tunnel into the seat landscape, creating a 360° open-air luxury lounge.

The new “inside out” spatial design adds a particularly special feature. The sitting surface forms a horizontal plane, transitions into the vertical plane of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing.

In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order. Here, too, the interplay of the contrasts is both hot and cool. The brand’s hallmark authentic materials and colours are used, such as rose gold on the trim elements, or the surfaces which come into contact with the skin, featuring a lavish, quilted crystal white nappa leather finish. In this luxury technique, familiar among other things from Chesterfield furniture, the leather is put into folds in a diamond pattern and secured to the frame with buttons. In the case of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet, this traditional seat upholstery boasts a futuristic interpretation: each individual button of the quilting depicts a delicate Mercedes star, backlit in blue. The open-pore wood floor with inlaid aluminium underscores the lounge sensation and the connection to yachting.

Above the 360° luxury lounge, the display strip links doors, dashboard and the rear area. All display elements are integrated into the continuous glass trim part. By way of contrast, classic round dials, such as the instrument cluster, are positioned prominently. The combination of digital displays with real needles is also totally on trend. By using “hyperanalogue” elements, the designers are responding to the need of people to experience analogue luxury in what is an increasingly digital world. As a classic borrowing from aviation, three air vents are positioned beneath the wing which appear to float like engines.

Another highlight comes courtesy of the floating, transparent centre tunnel, which visualises the drive system’s electrical energy flow for the passengers by means of blue fibre optics.

The main driving functions as well as information relevant to the location (e.g. restaurant recommendations or information on points of interest) are shown on the windscreen via two head-up displays.

User experience: intuitive communication

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is designed to anticipate the needs of its passengers and to provide the required information and solutions in real time. The user experience also combines ultimate luxury with intelligence. In addition to the touch-only control and intelligent navigation linked to the appointment calendar, another example is the Concierge function, it is possible to talk to the concierge like talking to a friend, i.e. freely, without using predefined voice commands. This enables full concentration of the tasks of driving.

The latest generation of biometric sensors record the state of mind and health status of the passengers.

Emission-free driving: electric drive system generating 550 kW (750 hp)

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The flat battery sits in the underbody. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA).

The quick-charge function is also visionary: as a result of DC charging based on the CCS standard, the system allows a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In just five minutes enough power can be charged to achieve an additional range of around 100 kilometres.

The wow effect: visionary show cars with long-term prospects

With its generous dimensions, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet (length/width/height: 5700/2100/1340 mm) continues the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz. So far these include the Vision EnerG‑Force (Los Angeles, November 2012), AMG Vision Gran Turismo (Sunnyvale, 2013), Vision Tokyo (Tokyo 2015) and Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Coupé (Pebble Beach 2016). Thanks to the global nature of the Mercedes-Benz Design function, these concept vehicles take cues from local trends in design, culture and mobility and make these the focal point of the respective mobility concept. At the same time, these show cars are looking far into the future.

Mercedes-Maybach: perfection blends with exclusivity

Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group includes customers who place value on exquisite luxury, perfect workmanship and exceptional appointments. The latest vehicles include models launched in July 2017, namely the Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4MATIC, (fuel consumption combined: 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209 g/km) and the S 650 (fuel consumption combined: 12.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km), which blends the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S‑Class with the exclusivity of Maybach.

Limited to 300 examples, the Mercedes-Maybach S‑Class Cabriolet (fuel consumption combined: 12.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 272 g/km) is the first open-top Maybach for decades and a homage to open-top automotive refinement.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet In-Depth

Summer's here and there is no better car to enjoy the sun

Summer’s here and there is no better car to enjoy the sun.  Here’s an in-depth look at the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet.

Mercedes-Benz is launching into the open-air season with the first cabriolet based on the C-Class, thereby rounding off its range of cabriolets with a classic fabric soft top. The new cabriolet’s design interprets modern luxury with a youthful touch. Featuring plenty of high-quality details, its distinctive character is most apparent when the top is down. The cabriolet is optionally available with the AIRCAP automatic draught stop system and AIRSCARF neck-level heating – for exceptional comfort during open-top driving 365 days a year. Efficient, powerful engines delivering between 115 and 270 kW (156 to 367 hp) and a suspension designed for dynamics (with optional AIRMATIC air suspension) ensure sportily agile handling. The new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is available for all engine variants. Also on board: proven assistance systems and state-of-the-art infotainment. The new C-Class Cabriolet launches in summer 2016.

“Our new C-Class Cabriolet is the entry into the world of premium cabriolets from Mercedes-Benz. Sporty and youthful in character and styling, it offers unadulterated open-air driving pleasure all year round,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The new C-Class Cabriolet

The new C-Class Cabriolet

Sporty and youthful

As the new entry-level model into the cabriolet world of Mercedes-Benz, the C‑Class Cabriolet is also a consistent embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy: sensual purity as the definition of contemporary luxury. It exhibits an independence of character with a visibly sporty expression and youthfully fresh appeal.

With its top up, the profile of the new two-door cabriolet resembles that of the C‑Class Coupé with virtually identical basic dimensions: with a striking front end featuring a diamond radiator grille, LED High Performance headlamps, long bonnet and high beltline. Its tightly stretched soft top with glass window transitions harmoniously into the distinctly styled rear end, which has a highly sporty look with its wide shoulders and flat LED tail lights. With a capacity of 360 litres (285 litres with the roof open), the boot is capable of holding an exceptional amount of luggage for a cabriolet, thus offering high everyday practicality.

*Dimensions in millimetres
At the sides, an elongated dropping line extending over the rear wheel arch lends an emphasis typical of Mercedes-Benz design. Thanks to its 15 millimetre lower suspension as standard compared with the Saloon, the vehicle already gives a sporty impression with its 17-inch standard tyres, underlining the sporty character of the Cabriolet, which excels aerodynamically with a cd value of 0.28.
AMG version with distinct looks
The same dropping line is taken up by the new Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Cabriolet which, however, has an even sportier look with its distinct AMG design and specific light-alloy wheels. It thus underscores the progressive nature and performance of the brand.
Exterior and interior from the same mould
With the roof open, the meticulously coordinated harmony between exterior and interior design becomes apparent. High-grade details include chrome trim on A‑pillar and windscreen as well as a beltline moulding, which extends as far as the soft-top compartment, which it borders with a broad chrome trim.
Premium-class fabric soft top
The fully automatic classic cabriolet fabric soft top comes in black in the basic variant or is optionally available with a multi-layer acoustic soft top in dark brown, dark blue, dark red or black. It significantly reduces the wind/driving noise. This is made noticeable in the form of improved speech intelligibility, including at high speeds, and better insulation from disruptive ambient noise. The acoustic soft top thus offers optimal climate comfort and quiet-running characteristics.
Based on the S-Class Cabriolet, the soft top also meets high quality standards in terms of durability and function. It can be opened and closed in less than 20 seconds up to a speed of 50 km/h. After opening, it folds down quietly and carefully and is stored in the soft-top compartment in the boot. In terms of its shape and colour, the cover of the soft-top compartment is an integral part of the interior and is made of the same material as the beltline.
Interior – modernity and lifestyle
The occupants enjoy an ambience that, while based on the interior of the C-Class Saloon, offers a fresh interpretation with typical cabriolet features. Especially high-grade materials and build quality give the interior a modern feel of sportiness and lifestyle. The equipment includes heat-reflecting leather in a total of five colour shades (optional) as well as a curved switch in matt silver chrome in the centre console for opening and closing the fully automatic cabriolet soft top. Based on the Coupé, the sport seats feature an integral look with muscular side bolsters and organically integrated head restraints as well as optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating. Automatic belt extenders as standard help the occupants with buckling up.
The rear seats are in the form of individual seats. Their backrests offer a through-loading feature, can be split 50:50 for high everyday practicality and can be completely folded down.
AMG with special details
The interior of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Cabriolet reinforces the consistently dynamic bias of the performance brand with numerous specially designed details. Ideal for a committed driving style, the multifunction sports steering wheel in black leather features a flattened bottom section and red contrasting topstitching, and sits perfectly in the hand.
Individual highlights
The Cabriolet already comes as standard with a high equipment specification, which is augmented by a wide range of individualisation options (some examples: 13 upholstery variants, such as designo Bengal red / black, seven trim variants, four soft-top colours, twelve paint finishes – including a matt finish, leather-covered instrument panel). The roof liner of the soft top is available in black, porcelain and crystal grey. Numerous trim elements in sporty aluminium, carbon fibre or glass fibre are complemented by authentic open-pore wood species in shades of brown and black.
The AMG Line is available as an alternative to underline the dynamism of the Cabriolet. It differs by virtue of exterior features such as special bumpers and sills with AMG bodystyling, a diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome and 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. In the interior, the AMG Line comes with sporty, exclusive highlights, including a multifunction sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section as well as AMG sports pedals.
At the market launch an Edition 1 will be available for a limited time. With a host of perfectly coordinated equipment lines, it combines sportiness with lifestyle, thus perfectly fitting with the sporty-modern look of the new cabriolet.
Summer is included
Customers opting for a cabriolet like to drive as often as possible with the top down. The fact that, also in the C-Class Cabriolet – as in the E- and S-Class Cabriolets – the occupants can enjoy maximum open-air comfort is made possible by AIRCAP and AIRSCARF, which make the joys of fresh air pleasant even at low temperatures.
Inconspicuously integrated into the roof frame, the electric AIRCAP draught stop system was specially developed for Mercedes-Benz cabriolets and is coupled to an electric draught stop behind the rear seats, which reduces the interior turbulence also for the rear passengers at the press of a button. AIRCAP is part of the Cabriolet Comfort package, which also includes AIRSCARF neck-level heating for the driver and front passenger. The combination of these two systems extends the open-top season to the entire year.
Alternatively, there is also the option of a retrofitted manual folding draught stop behind the front seats. This noticeably stops draughts in the front seats.
Suspension: sportily agile and comfortable
The suspension offers a high level of comfort with low road roar and tyre vibration characteristics while ensuring agile driving dynamics – the basis for driving enjoyment. The suspension on the Cabriolet, which is 15 millimetres lower in comparison with the Saloon, comes as standard with steel springs with a selective damping system. An optional sports suspension with firmer springing and damping, including the Sports Direct-Steer system, makes for even more agile handling.
Riding on air
The Cabriolet is optionally available with AIRMATIC air suspension. Its electronically controlled, continuously adjustable damping on the front and rear axles ensures low road roar and tyre vibration characteristics in every situation.
DYNAMIC SELECT – standard with AIRMATIC and optionally available with a steel suspension – allows the driver to choose their desired setting: sporty, comfortable or fuel-efficient. To this end, the driver can select one of five transmission modes using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch: “ECO”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”. Selecting “Individual” allows the driver to customise the vehicle settings to suit their personal preferences.
Dynamic: 4 and 6-cylinder engines and, for the first time, 4MATIC
Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function and an extensive 4MATIC range make for sporty performance and driving pleasure all year round. All are compliant with the Euro 6 emissions standard.
Six petrol engines are available for the Cabriolet. The range of outputs extends from the 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit in the C 180 rated at 115 kW (156 hp) to the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Cabriolet (270 kW/367 hp). The C 200 is optionally available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
The diesel models are powered by a four-cylinder engine delivering 125 kW (170 hp) in the C 220 d or 150 kW (204 hp) in the C 250 d and are equipped with eco-friendly SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for exhaust aftertreatment. 4MATIC is available for the C 220 d.
The new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission can be ordered for all engine variants.

Light and safe bodyshell
In a cabriolet, the lack of a roof often results in reduced body stiffness. This fact was taken into consideration by the designers in developing the C-Class Saloon. This allowed them to adapt the bodyshell at the front end and on the floor to meet the particular needs of the Cabriolet. Consequently, this model, too, features an exemplary stiff design of the kind required for high driving dynamics.
The Coupé’s intelligent lightweight construction with a high proportion of aluminium was retained – among others, the wings, bonnet and boot lid are made of light alloy. The Cabriolet not only meets all current national and international laws, but also all rating requirements as well as the more stringent internal Mercedes-Benz safety requirements, which are based on what actually happens in a real-world accident.
Safe semi-autonomous driving to reduce stress
There are many safety and assistance systems based on the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive concept to choose from. ATTENTION ASSIST with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, is included as standard. Further standard equipment includes COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. In addition to a visual proximity warning and an additional audible collision warning, it includes Adaptive Brake Assist, which can help prevent collisions by boosting the brake pressure to suit the situation. When a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stationary vehicles or, in the best-case scenario, even avoiding a collision altogether. At speeds of up to 50 km/h, the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles and is thus able to help prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.
The optionally available Driving Assistance package includes additional assistance systems that have been significantly extended in terms of their functions. As part of the Intelligent Drive concept, these merge data from various sensor technologies, such as radar sensors and stereo camera, and thus make for significantly enhanced safety and comfort. These functions include for example DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot or the PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection plus the Brake Assist BAS PLUS, which also offers situation-adaptive brake boosting if there is a risk of collision from crossing traffic. A further function of the Driving Assistance package is Active Lane Keeping Assist, which is capable of preventing unintentional lane departure by means of one-sided, lane-correcting application of the brakes. The system intervenes if the driver crosses a solid lane marking and can assist even in the case of discontinuous lane markings if there is a risk of collision with a vehicle in the adjacent lane.
The multiplicity of assistance systems also includes a Parking Assist for semi-automated parking; a 360° camera for assistance during parking and manoeuvring; a camera and navigation-based Traffic Sign Assist with wrong-way warning function as well as Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, which allows continuous high beam by selectively blanking out other vehicles from the high-beam light cone.
Safe protection
In an accident, optimal protection is afforded by the high structural safety of the body as well as by the restraint systems, especially the comprehensive complement of airbags. These include:
  • adaptive front airbags for driver and front passenger
  • a kneebag on the driver’s side
  • thorax/pelvis bags for driver and front passenger
  • windowbags integrated in the top edges of the front door panels
The roll-over protection system is specific to the Cabriolet. It consists of two cartridges that are fully retracted behind the rear seats and therefore invisible. If a roll-over is imminent, these cartridges are pyrotechnically fired, whereupon they shoot out to provide a survival space together with the A-pillar.
Sensitive climate control for open-air driving
Specially developed for cabriolets, the climate control system responds to whether the vehicle is being driven with the roof up or down. With the roof closed, the system performs in the same way as in the Coupé. With the soft top down, the climate control system adapts by, for example, blowing warmer air onto the driver’s hands on the steering wheel and deactivating the air recirculation function. The special adjustments for open-top driving make allowance for whether cooling or heating is required and respond sensitively to the transition zones in between.
Vibrant infotainment experience
Intuitive operation with animations and visual effects is offered by the infotainment system. Frontbass ensures a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall – especially if the optionally available Burmester® sound system has been specified. The Frontbass system uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers.
The navigation system, which supplies the driver with precise traffic information in real time (Live Traffic Information), processes its contents interactively. Its features include an animated compass and a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on an airliner.
Extensive networking even in the basic version
A Bluetooth®-compatible mobile phone with data option is all it takes to give the Audio 20 system internet capability. This allows internet surfing without restriction when the vehicle is stationary. Mercedes-Benz apps can be used while driving. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources.
The alternatively available COMAND Online system provides not only a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, but it also optionally allows digital TV/radio reception, for example, while offering fast hard-drive navigation, integral WiFi hotspot functionality and LINGUATRONIC voice control as well as many other features.
The basic Audio 20 system as well as Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online all offer basic telephony as standard, which links up a mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface.
Mercedes me connect: connected with the car
Like other models, the new C-Class Cabriolet comes with an extensive range of free Standard Services and Remote Online Services as part of the “Mercedes me connect” package. Standard Services include automatic emergency call, Accident Recovery as well as breakdown assistance and after-sales service. The Remote Online services make it possible at any time and from anywhere to access vehicle information such as the status of windows and doors, mileage, tyre pressures and other diagnostic data. There is also a Vehicle Tracker function as well as remote door locking and unlocking.

Mercedes-Benz Knows, One-Size Does Not Fit All

Facts about the largest and smallest convertibles from Mercedes-Benz Cars

For Mercedes-Benz, 2016 is quickly becoming the year of the convertible and the roadster. There’s no other manufacturer that offers so many and such young convertibles and roadsters as Mercedes-Benz Cars. The new C-Class Cabriolet – the latest in a long line of dream cars – has just had its world premiere in Geneva. Other signs of spring are the two updated SL and SLC Roadsters. The latest range of convertible dream cars extends from the smart fortwo cabrio and the C and E-Class Cabriolets to the S-Class Cabriolet.

Did you know that…

… the smart fortwo cabrio and the S-Class Cabriolet are 12 shoe sizes apart? The front tyres of the smart are in size 165/65 R 15, with a width of 16.5 cm. That corresponds to shoe size 27. The S-Class Cabriolet has somewhat larger feet: its standard tyre size is 245/50 R 18. 24.7 cm corresponds to shoe size 39.

… a smart fortwo can theoretically cover 116 kilometres with the fuel reserve in its tank, and the S-Class around 94 kilometres? 5 of the 28 litres in the tank of the smart fortwo 52 kW twinamic are a reserve, the combined NEDC fuel consumption is 4.3 litres/100 km. The data for the S 500: 80-litre tank, 8-litre reserve, NEDC consumption 8.5 l/100 km.

…Tanja was one of the first test drivers in both cars? Tanja is the nickname the convertible developers have given to a test dummy used to measure draughts in the wind tunnel. The young lady is fitted with a total of 16 speed sensors. These measure the flow rate of the airstream in the interior when the roof is open. The values obtained are weighted, as a draught around the neck area is much more annoying than e.g. at the crown of the head. Adding the weighted values together produces the so-called “feel-good factor”. This is a number describing how well the occupants of a convertible are protected from draughts.

…both engines (52 kW smart, S 500) have the same compression ratio of 10.5:1? But that is all they have in common. The S 500 has more than twice as many cylinders as the smart (8 vs. 3), and more than six times the output (455 hp vs. 71 hp).

…smart drivers are able to open their soft top at three times the speed allowed for S-Class drivers? Drivers of the largest Mercedes-Benz convertible are able to open the soft top at up to 50 km/h, fortwo drivers at up to a maximum speed of 151 km/h.

…both models are the latest variants in a successful model family? The S‑Class Cabriolet is the sixth variant in the current S-Class family launched in 2013, while the smart cabrio is the third variant of the new generation launched in November 2014.

… the engines of the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet and the smart fortwo cabrio 52 kW twinamic have similar mean piston speeds of 16.59 and 16.26 m/sec.? The stroke and engine speed at rated output is 90.5 mm and 5500 rpm/81.3 mm and 6000 rpm respectively.

…all convertibles produced by Mercedes-Benz Cars must absolve the same stringent tests? These include e.g. endurance testing with 20,000 opening/ closing cycles and a car wash test with 500 cycles.

… convertibles are built for use in the summer, but at Mercedes-Benz Cars they still have to absolve stringent winter tests? These include dependable opening and closing of the soft top in temperatures ranging from -15° to +80°C.

… the word “Cabriolet” comes from the French verb “cabrioler”? “Cabrioler” in French means to leap or caper about. In the early years of the automobile, however, open-top motoring as a guarantee for high spirits did not yet need a special body design. Because the period between 1886 and around 1920 was dominated by the open-top automobile anyway. And the term “Cabriolet” comes from the time of the horse-drawn coach: it was the name given to a light, open coach drawn by two horses. This 2-horsepower vehicle was mainly reserved for pleasurable excursions in fine weather.

… up until the 1950s, there were six different types of convertible body produced by Mercedes-Benz — not counting roadsters? The different body types:

  • The Cabriolet A was a two-door, usually two-seater car. Its soft top extended right down to the doors.
  • The Cabriolet B likewise had two doors, but also had four seats and side windows for the passengers in the rear.
  • The Cabriolet C had the same arrangement of doors and seats as the Cabriolet B, though it lacked the rear side windows.
  • The Cabriolet D was a four-door car with four or five seats and a heavier soft top.
  • The rare Cabriolet E had six seats and the heavier soft top.
  • The Cabriolet F was the same as the Cabriolet E, except for additional side windows behind the rear doors. Both had four doors.

… S-Class enthusiasts had to wait 15 times longer for a Cabriolet than smart fans? The new S-Class Cabriolet is the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. The first smart fortwo cabrio, on the other hand, was already introduced in spring 2000, i.e. around three years after the launch of the completely new mobility concept.

… the smart fortwo cabrio has its top down faster than the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet? It takes around 12 seconds for the smart, the “tritop” fabric soft top of which is electrically opened and closed. The time for the (naturally larger) soft top of the S-Class Cabriolet is around 20 seconds. For full open-air enjoyment the smart driver can also remove the side roof frame struts.

Summer in the city: The new smart fortwo cabrio

In March 2016 the new smart fortwo cabrio entered the stage as a particularly iconic variant of the new model series. The open two-seater is three cars in one: At the touch of a button it is transformed from a closed two-seater into a car with a large sliding canvas sunroof, or a fully-fledged convertible with the soft top completely open. This enables the fresh air driving experience to be adapted to the weather or the driver’s mood. This flexibility made possible by the “tritop” folding sunroof and removable roof struts is a special feature not only in this segment. At the same time, the new smart fortwo cabrio is the only true convertible in its vehicle class. In its least expensive version it has the 52 kW engine and the twinamic dual clutch transmission. In addition to the three lines passion, prime and proxy, customers can choose from a large range of safety and comfort details – including smartphone integration via MirrorLink®.

Open-top luxury: The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet

The new S-Class Cabriolet is the sixth variant of the current S-Class family, and the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. It offers a distinctive, sensual and exclusive design, and the cutting-edge technology of the S-Class. Mercedes-Benz lays claim to building the world’s most comfortable convertible. When it comes to climate comfort, the enhanced automatic wind protection system AIRCAP, the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, the heated armrests, the seat heating also in the rear plus the intelligent climate control ensure that this is indeed the case.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet Official Rendering Released

Mercedes-Benz has released an official image showing off its upcoming the highly anticipated S-Class Cabriolet

This is not a trick and it’s not a third party rendering, Mercedes-Benz has released an official image showing off its upcoming the highly anticipated S-Class Cabriolet. The luxuriously sexy S-Class convertible will show off its curves at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Mercedes-Benz cabriolet

Mercedes-Benz cabriolet

The last time we saw a Mercedes-Benz topless flagship with four-seats was in 1971, but that is where comparisons will end as the the S-Class convertible (A217) of today will be one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road. It will use an electrically retractable folding fabric roof that features a multi-layer configuration and a large glass rear window. The roof design mimics allows the convertible to replicate the look of the S-Class Coupe, despite the fact that to store the folded roof, the rear end will be slightly longer and with a different shape.

Under the hood, you can expect the engine lineup to closely mimic the S-Class coupe with there also being a S63 and S65 version, not expected until early next year. Rear-wheel drive will be standard, but Mercedes-Benz will offer several engines with an optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive setup.

Stay tuned as we’ll likely have a full photo gallery of the S-Class Cabriolet shortly.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Spy Photos – Update

Mercedes-Benz is working on a convertible version of the next-generation C-Class, this confirmed by the latest spy photos

Mercedes-Benz is working on a convertible version of the next-generation C-Class, this confirmed by the latest spy photos that made their way onto the web this morning. Look for the 2014 C-Class cabriolet to go on sale in 2015.

Even with heavy camouflage, we are able to clearly see the cabriolet’s sleek profile.  With it’s small rear end and the minimization of weight and cost, we are speculating that the C-Class Cabriolet will come with a fabric top though it is too hard to tell based on the photos.

According to Auto Express sources, an A-Class cabriolet is no longer part of Mercedes’ product lineup, so the C-Class Convertible, though a bit larger, will be the Mercedes rival the Audi A3 Cabriolet and the new BMW 2 Series Convertible.  As always, we will keep you posted as new information and photos become available.  Via: AutoExpress.co.uk

UPDATE: The latest photos come courtesy of our friends at GMotors and show the all new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet entering a Mercedes factory in South Germany. The prototype has side mirrors on the door instead of on the A-pillar like we see on the saloon.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet First Spy Photos

The fabric roof will be taken from the Ocean Drive Concept, however the production model will only have two doors not four

Back in June, we told you about the distinct possibility that Mercedes was in the process of developing a two-door S-Class Cabriolet.  Thanks to the latest spy photos, we can confirm that yes, Mercedes is in the testing stages with their 2014 S-Class Cabriolet that is likely based on their Ocean Drive concept that was shown publically in 2007.

The fabric roof will be taken from the Ocean Drive Concept, however the production model will have only two doors instead of the concept’s four.

As for the engine choices in the S-Class convertible, we expect to see only a few of the engine options that are otherwise available in the standard S-Class model.  The one engine we are pretty positive we will see however, is the V12 AMG.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet will compete with models like the BMW 6-Series and the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible.

2013 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabrio Rumors

Drawing inspiration from the Ocean Drive Concept, the production S-Class Convertible will likely be a two-door with cloth top

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class will include a convertible variant. Could it be true this time, will Mercedes actually produce a model similar to the one they teased us with way back in 2007. Reports are in that Mercedes wants to compete and fill the gap in the range where Maybach was.

Those in the know at Mercedes revealed to CarAdvice that the S-Class convertible will be based on the company’s Ocean Drive concept, the concept revealed to us back in 2007. Taking its folding fabirc roof from the Ocean Drive, but the production S-Class Cabrio will instead be a two-door.

We can also expect the new S-Class convertible to feature the company’s Airscarf neck-warming technology. Debuted in the 2004 on the Mercedes SLK roadster, the system pumps warm air through vents incorporated into the seats, in the S-Class, it will likely be pumped to all four seats.

Engine options in the S-Class convertible will likely be limited compared to the standard model however, expect to see a diesel and powerful V12 in the mix.

Mercedes-Benz History – Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Coupe and Cabriolet

In the 1960's, driving a luxury-class coupé was an expression of automotive culture that was as exclusive as it was elegant

In March of 1962, Mercedes-Benz celebrated the premiere of two luxurious premium-class cars at the 32nd Geneva Motor Show – the 300 SE Coupé and the 300 SE Cabriolet (W 112 series).

In terms of their styling, both the coupé and the cabriolet were based on the respective variants of the 220 SE (W 111). The full-length floor unit was adopted from the tailfin saloon, underscoring the stately presence of both two-door vehicles with their 2.75-metre wheelbase and overall length of 4.88 metres.

However, the new models did feature trim elements in addition to those of the 2.2-litre-engine model, as well as being equipped with engine and technology of the 300 SE saloon. Initially, the M 189 IV straight-six cylinder light-metal engine delivered 160 bhp (118 kW) at 5000 rpm, having an increased output of 170 bhp (125 kW) at 5400 rpm from 1964 onwards. Depending on the rear-axle ratio and the engine installed, coupé and cabriolet could reach top speeds of between 175 km/h and 195 km/h.

The vehicles’ standard equipment included a four-speed automatic transmission, power steering, pneumatic suspension and a dual-circuit brake system with disc brakes on front and rear wheels. The additional chrome decoration consisted of a continuous trim strip in the longitudinal groove running from the headlamps to the tail lights, and distinctive trim strips on the front and rear wheel arches.

Coupé culture and cabriolet fascination in their purest form

The two new models not only represented the summit of their model series in March 1962. They also set the general standards for two highly exclusive bodywork forms behind each of which a particular interpretation of the fascination for cars stood: the premium-class coupé and the cabriolet.

Driving a luxury-class coupé is an expression of automotive culture that is as exclusive as it is elegant: the two-door, closed touring car combined flowing forms and sporty ambience with powerful drive systems and fine appointments.

The luxury-class cabriolet, on the other hand, open to the sky, breaks down the boundary between passenger compartment and its surroundings. In particular with the top drawn back, this type of vehicle combines originality of automotive travel with distinguished yet sporty motoring. In addition, the sturdy convertible top offers the protection of a coupé if wished.

Luxury-class coupés and cabriolets from Mercedes-Benz realize these special values in an exemplary manner over and over again, for which reason the brand and model culture of Mercedes-Benz has given proof of understanding and appreciation for both vehicle concepts through a large number of models.

Luxury coupés and cabriolets of the Stuttgart-based brand are not just grounded in this great tradition, they always look towards the future as well. In the 1962 300 SE Coupé and 300 SE Cabriolet this particular aspiration found its expression in consonance with its time. This was understood by “auto, motor und sport” magazine in its 7/1962 issue, that hailed the two new 112/3-series cars as the “non-plus-ultra of modern automotive construction”.

Closely related to the “tailfin”, yet independent

For all their technical and stylistic affinity with the saloon, the two-door vehicles were convincing original, independent vehicle designs. Thus Mercedes-Benz did not use a single central body-in-white part from the four-door model for the coupé and cabriolet. And for the design the developers explored their own paths, for instance, the saloon’s tailfins were merely suggested in the coupé and the cabriolet.

On the other hand, the two-door vehicles were closely related to each other: except for the missing roof and the necessary bodywork reinforcements the cabriolet was similar to the coupé in all details. The coupé even offered the potential for further models, as shown by a modified version of a 300 SE Coupé in 1962: for this singular vehicle the Mercedes-Benz research department removed the rear roof edging together with the rear window and installed a retractable folding top, creating a particularly exclusive landaulet (landau). However, this version was never produced in series.

The two 3-litre models were modified in many details in the course of their construction period. For example, from March 1963 a 4-speed manual transmission became available for the 300 SE Coupé and Cabriolet. And January 1964 brought the replacement of the injection system by a 6-plunger injection pump, which increased the engine’s output by 10 bjp (7 kW) to 170 bhp (125 kW).

Already a timeless classic during the time of its manufacture

The luxury-class coupés and cabriolets from Mercedes-Benz already revealed themselves as classics in the 1960s. In the summer of 1965 the W 111 and W 112 “tailfin” saloons were superseded by model series W 108, and only the 230 S model, created by reworking model 220 Sb, continued to be built until 1968, among other things as the 230 S Universal estate saloon. The coupés and cabriolets, on the other hand, remained in the programme: these exclusive two-door cars appeared fresh and elegant, in no way outdated, even when standing next to the saloons of the more recent generation. For the two-door models there were, however, alterations in some details, based on the engineering of the new saloons. In the case of the 300 SE, these included, for example, larger-dimensioned disc brakes and 14-inch wheels.

Production of the 300 SE Coupé and 300 SE Cabriolet was discontinued in Dezember 1967. In September 1969 280 SE 3.5 series Coupé and Cabriolet were ready as their worthy successors, powered by an entirely re-engineered 3.5-litre V8 engine delivering 200 bhp (147 kW). With a total of just 708 units produced, the open version of the 300 SE is the most exclusive variant of all Mercedes-Benz coupés and cabriolets of this luxury class, while 2419 units of the 300 SE series coupé were built from 1962 to 1967.

FAB Design Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

Swiss Tuner, FAB Design, unveiled their tuning package for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

Swiss Tuner, FAB Design, is known for their elaborate tuning packages as seen in their versions of the SLR McLaren Desire or more recently on the SLS AMG Gullstream. Their recent work on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet however is far more subdued, keeping only FAB Designs trademark wide body styling and large air vents in the fenders.

The FAB Design package for the Mercedes convertible includes a new front skirt with matching daylight running lights, widened front wings, rear apron, a diffuser and a spoiler. A variety of the wide body parts are made from high quality carbon fiber.

The wheels are three-part, concave alloys measuring 9 and 10×20 inch wide. On top of this, FAB Design fit a compatible sports suspension set and custom FAB stainless steel sports exhaust with two oval end-pipes. The exhaust system can be equipped with sound control for either loud or quiet settings.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Spy Photos

Engine options are likely to include a 306 PS 3.5-liter V6 as well as a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 with 408 PS

Look past its absolutely hideous wheels and golden paint color, and there, below light camouflage, exists the next-generation Mercedes SL-Class.  Expected to makes its debut early next year and hit the market soon thereafter, look for styling closer to that of the current SLK and SLS models, bringing the family into glorious styling harmony.

Under the hood, engine options are likely to include a 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) 3.5-liter V6 as well as a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 with 408 PS (300 kW / 402 hp) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. Mercedes-Benz SL R230 By Piecha Design

For all SL R230 models with the March '08 facelift, Mercedes specialist PIECHA Design offers a comprehensive refinement package

The facelifted Mercedes-Benz SL received a new tuning package from Piecha Design that offers both function and style updates.

Design updates include new spoilers, daytime running lights and a four-tailpipe stainless steel sport exhaust system. In addition, there is also a lowered suspension to reduce the riding height by 30mm and to finish the R230 off, 20-inch alloy wheels.

A power converter and a updated roof module enable the hardtop to be opened or closed at speeds of up to 37 mph.

PIECHA DESIGN – Mercedes-Benz SL R230 Facelift 2008

A true designer car!

Things that are timeless and good just don’t tend to go out of fashion. The Mercedes-Benz designers provided perfect proof of that with the R230-series SL. They were far ahead of their times. By now, the famous roadster is in its eleventh year of production. Its looks have remained nearly identical through the years.

For all SL R230 models starting at the March 2008 facelift, Mercedes specialist PIECHA Design from Rottweil offers a comprehensive refinement package.

PIECHA is the only tuner to develop special build-in housings with LED daytime headlights, incl. fog lamp. They can be delivered ready for installation for the serial bumper and the AMG bumper of the SL63 and SL65. For the serial bumper, a refined, elegant, three-part front spoiler lip was developed as well to harmonise perfectly with the daytime headlights. PIECHA also offers a harmonious rear spoiler lip that is as elegant as it is effective. It provides an additional push down on the rear axle.

Elegant: PIECHA MP1 Monoblock!

The new PIECHA MP1 monoblock wheel rims in the front-polished titanium silky-gloss version are true eye-catchers. They are available at 9.5×20 with 255/30 R20 for the front, and at a gigantic 11×20 with 305/25 R20 for the rear wheel cases of the SL. The beautiful brand-new PIECHA designer wheel set matches all the CLS models of the 219 and 218 series with the same tyres. The car body also does not require any rework. Proper wheel covering, however, requires that the chassis is lowered.

The SL-chassis can be lowered either by classic Piecha lowering springs (-30 mm) for the coil-spring version, or a Piecha-lowering module (-30 mm) for the ABC-chassis.

PIECHA Quadro 4-tube exhaust system!

The stainless steel PIECHA Quadro sports exhaust system installed at the tail is a true designer piece. With its four end tubes in right/left loops, it ensures sportively perfect symmetry and a saturated, low growl.

There are some “must have” products that should be installed in any SL. Among others, they are the legendary PIECHA power converter to ensure clearly improved acceleration, and the comfort vario roof module with many additional comfort functions, among others permitting opening and closing of the roof at a speed of up to 60 km/h.

The result: Good can still be improved! As usual, PIECHA Design presents a plethora of interesting tuning components for the R230-series SL, every single one of them matching the car body lines of the cult roadsters in unparalleled perfection.

Prices for the new PIECHA MP1 monoblock wheel rims:

  • 9.5 x 20″ 420.00 Euro incl. VAT per piece
  • 11.0 x 20″ 520.00 Euro incl. VAT per piece

Brabus Announces Tuning Program for Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

The BRABUS 800 E V12 Cabriolet reaches a top speed of 231 mph and is the world's most powerful and fastest four-seater cabriolet.

It was only a matter of time before Brabus turned their attention to the new E-Class Cabriolet after having already tuned the sedan and the coupe. The German tuner has given the cabriolet aesthetic updates both on the exterior and the interior as well as some mechanical updates.

On the exterior, newly designed front sport fenders widen the track and allow the installation of ultra-wide 9.5Jx19 wheels mounted with size 265/30 ZR 19 tires. In addition, an updated front apron to reduce lift with LED daytime running lights has been integrated for a distinct look. In the back, special carbon-fiber rear fender flares add 60 millimeters (2.4 inches) to the width of the E-Class Cabriolet to make space for space for ten-inch wide wheels mounted with high-performance tires.

For the interior, Brabus covered the cockpit in a perfectly finished combination of lipstick-red and black leather.  Other enhancements include  an ergonomically shaped Brabus steering wheel and inlays made from genuine carbon fiber on the dashboard, center console and side trim.

Engine updates bumped the displacement from the standard 5.5 to 6.3 liters by installing a special crankshaft with a longer stroke and larger pistons in conjunction with increased cylinder bore bumps. The BRABUS 800 V12 Biturbo powertrain, transforms the four-seater convertible into the most powerful and fastest of its kind in the world. A total of 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), limited electronically in the car to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft), are as unique as the driving performance this car delivers. The Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet boasts a sprint time of 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds.

PIECHA Design Adds Distinction to Mercedes-Benz SLK as the Accurian RS

Piecha gives the new, more defined front of the SLK an Accurian RS front spoiler lip with lateral grids

The new, third generation of the legendary SLK was long expected and is now available at Mercedes-Benz distributors, precisely at the beginning of the summer.

Obviously, it was a question of honour for the PIECHA Design specialists to develop as one of the first ones an entire styling and tuning programme for the new SLK R172. And thus, they present the “Accurian RS”, a sporty, elegant interpretation of the Stuttgart-based roadster. Piecha gives the new, more defined front of the SLK an Accurian RS front spoiler lip with lateral grids. The lip can be combined with a cover, which turns the grid into a three-part piece and further emphasises the LED daytime running lights on the right and left side. For a quieter airflow around the lateral body of the new SLK, PIECHA Design installed a set of Accurian RS side skirt covers. The covers are bonded easily and positively on the original side skirts. Furthermore, the opposed installed grids provide for a more prominent design. For all R172 models, no matter whether with the side skirts, the AMG or also the Accurian RS sills, PIECHA Design offers per side four LED recessed spotlights each.

The rear end has a considerable sportier appearance thanks to the Accurian RS rear diffuser, which is available in a small and large version. The diffusor, which runs up to the subfloor, not only provides for additional output at the rear axle, but also frames the QUADRO 4-tube mufflers in perfection. In both versions, the serial rear apron has to be slightly reworked. Moreover, a diffusor application is available for the AMG styling rear apron. The Accurian RS aerodynamic programme is completed by a classical rear spoiler lip, which has a simple adhesive fixation. Another world premiere are the PIECHA MP1 monobloc high-tech rims, which perfectly match the modern and sporty, elegant design language of the Accurian RS with its newly interpreted turbine design. In the front in 8.5×19 ET25 with 225/35 R19 and in the back in optional 9.5 or 10.5×19 with 255 or 275/30 R19, the MP1 monobloc wheel provides in connection with 25 mm lowering springs for a perfect wedge shape.

Finally, the Mercedes specialists from Rottweiler offer practical comfort top control, which allows for an opening and closing of the top via the serial key up to a speed of 60 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz E350 CDI Cabriolet by MEC Design is Perfect for Summer

The Berlin based Mercedes-Benz tuning company MEC Design tuned an E-Class E350 CDI Cabriolet with their new mecxtremeIII

In the great city of Chicago, it is currently pouring down rain and in the mid 30’s, not exactly what you want for the first few days of spring. So, when the press release from MEC Design came in and I saw the beautfiul E-Class Cabrio, I have to admit I sat fantasized about driving with the top down with the summer sun beating down for a few minutes. The Berlin based Mercedes-Benz tuning company MEC Design are ahead of the weather and have already tuned an E-Class E350 CDI Cabriolet with their new mecxtremeIII. Though they have only made minor changes, one piece wheels, lowering springs and exhaust system, they have embodied summer in their design.

No sooner has the Spring Collection of mecxtremeIII wheels arrived, MEC Design have already installed them on the E-Class coupe ready for the summer. The mecxtremeIII 1pc wheels are available in a full range with 8 breathtaking finishes they have been shown here with the Satin Black, Satin White and Full Matt Black editions. New Generation SLK Roadster Design Journey

The design idiom accentuates the Mercedes SLK's lively, sporty presence, and is also sculptural

The designers have tailor-made an outfit for the new SLK which emphasises its classic roadster proportions and puts them in the spotlight to thrilling effect. Behind the long bonnet is a compact passenger compartment positioned far back, and a short tail end. The SLK will tempt potential customers with the key attributes that characterise all the classic roadsters from Mercedes-Benz, and that have also made many of them automotive icons.

Professor Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The SLK continues the illustrious roadster tradition of Mercedes-Benz, and excitingly takes it into the future. The design idiom accentuates its lively, sporty presence, and is also sculptural. It expresses personality and sensuality. The same applies to the interior. High-grade materials, lovingly crafted details and a very exclusive finish characterise the essentially very sporty atmosphere.”

Striking front end

The first feature to catch the eye is an upright radiator grille that stands proud and confident in the wind, bearing the new face of the Mercedes-Benz brand. It facilitates the long and well-proportioned bonnet and with its rearward light-catching contours it already hints at the roadster’s dynamic qualities. The bonnet ends with two air intake grilles in front of the windscreen, each embellished with three louvres.

The wide radiator grille bears the Mercedes-Benz star in a prominent central position and displays a powerfully contoured fin, chromed at the front. The clearly defined headlamps complete the look for the new SLK’s face, and daytime running lamps with chrome surrounds (round lamps in the base version) in the bumper round off the front end. The “face” of the new SLK is reminiscent of the legendary 190 SL from the 1950s, which is regarded by many as being the original “SLK”. But it was certainly not just the past that the designers were focusing on; with the new SLK’s front end they also intentionally created a close visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “gull-wing model” and the new CLS.

The amazing and measurable proof of the meticulously detailed work that has been carried out is that in spite of the more striking, steeper front and the larger frontal area, the Cd value has been cut to just 0.30 (preceding model 0.32).

Dramatic lines

The classic, timeless lines of the side aspect with its typical roadster proportions embodies the utmost aesthetic appeal with a visual assurance of sportiness and fun. The vario-roof spans the interior like a drawn bow. When opened it disappears into the boot, creating the typical roadster silhouette. From any angle and in any position it blends harmoniously into the overall design. A fillet conceals the boot joint, so that it does not disturb the side aspect as with similar roof designs. Neither are the lines disturbed by aerials in most equipment variants: in most cases they are integrated into the windscreen, rear window and parcel shelf.

The air outlet grilles with a chromed fin in the front wings are reminiscent of the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s. In the new SLK they form the elegant starting point for a feature line which extends right back to the muscular rear wings, and uses light and shadow to lend style and elegance to the side aspect.

This is emphasised by the stemmed exterior mirrors, which are positioned on the beltline where they allow a better forward view to the side. With their very narrow stems painted in the vehicle colour, these make a sporty and filigree impression. Their sophisticated aerodynamics also help to keep the side windows practically dirt-free, while ensuring a low level of wind noise.

Depending on the engine variant, the wheel arches house 16 or 17-inch light-alloy wheels, or 18-inch wheels with mixed-size tyres in conjunction with the sports suspension.

Muscular rear end

At the rear the eye is drawn to the integrated spoiler lip and wide tail light clusters. The roll-over bars feature double-skinned plastic claddings with a high-quality soft-look surface. As an optional extra these rear claddings can be of anodised aluminium.

For the first time, the tail lights with their pronounced horizontal emphasis are in all-LED technology. Their upper edge extends forward into the sides, harmoniously culminating in the feature line. A twin exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipes rounds off the muscular impression created by the rear view.

High-grade materials and stylish sportiness

The new SLK is 31 millimetres longer and 33 millimetres wider than its predecessor. With the most compact dimensions in its class, the new SLK has an interior whose generous size is nonetheless exemplary. To achieve this, the designers have developed interior appointments which offer the driver and passenger outstanding perceived value, purist precision and a real feel-good ambience. The interior in the base colour black is characterised by sporty refinement, well thought-out ergonomics and high-quality, authentic materials which have been processed with painstaking attention to detail and skilled craftsmanship. Even in the base version, the centre console and other trim parts gleam in brushed aluminium. Wood can be selected as an option in high-gloss dark brown walnut or high-gloss black ash.

Echoing the exterior design, the black dashboard emphasises the horizontal lines and therefore width of the vehicle. On request it is available in a two-tone colour scheme and with a leather lining. Four round, galvanised air vents similar in form to those in the SLS are recessed into the dashboard, underlining the car’s membership of the Mercedes-Benz sports car family and at the same time deliberately creating associations with the dynamism of jet aviation.

Two large dial instruments – a speedometer and a rev counter – flank a display for the information generated by the online computer. The display menus can be conveniently accessed by the driver using the control buttons on the steering wheel, without taking his eyes off the road. The colour display for the communication and entertainment functions is housed in the centre of the dashboard, and can be easily read by both the driver and passenger. A comfortably shaped controller on the centre armrest ensures safe and easy operation.

On the top of the dashboard, also in the centre, sits a fine analogue clock (optional), subtly underlining the roadster’s stylish character.

An easily handled (diameter 375 millimetres) multifunction sports steering wheel with a flattened bottom section and a thick leather rim makes the high quality and sporty character of the new SLK a constant tactile experience. Metal trim on the spokes enhance the impression of both sportiness and refinement. Shift paddles to perform upshifts and downshifts in the automatic transmission are available as an option. The interior can be enhanced even further with a wood/leather steering wheel.

The sweeping lines of the upper dashboard section are continued into the door panels. The door centre panel is colour-coordinated with the interior. The door openers and seat adjustment switches are trimmed in aluminium or wood.

Sporty yet comfortable seats

The sporty, ergonomic seats with adjustable, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints integrated into the backrests have high side bolsters for optimum lateral support and a high level of comfort on long journeys. Maximum operating convenience and seating comfort is ensured by optional electric seat adjustment with a memory function and 4-way lumbar support.

In the base version the new SLK is equipped with black fabric seats. There is also a choice of:

  • embossed leather in black, sahara beige or crystal grey
  • nappa leather in black, bengal red or moccha/nut brow
  • Exclusive nappa leather – in this case the upper dashboard section and the doors are lined with black nappa leather

All leather and nappa leather seats are upholstered with leather which noticeably reduces heat build-up. The leather has a special coating which reflects the sun’s rays. Comparative measurements have shown that this leather reduces the temperature of the seats by more than ten degrees Celsius – a significant improvement in comfort when the car has been parked in the sun.

As in the previous model, the neck-level heating system AIRSCARF is available as an optional extra for the new SLK. This creates a flow of warm air around the neck and shoulder areas of the occupants from a vent in the front of each head restraint.

Magical lighting

An ambient lighting system available as an option for the first time creates an impressive effect in the interior of the new SLK. It consists of discreet optical fibres and spots in SOLAR RED, which produce an extremely pleasant yet sporty lighting effect in the door panels, around the door pulls and on both sides of the centre console. This mood-enhancing ambient lighting is activated when the doors are opened (“welcome home” effect), and its intensity can be individually varied by a dimmer.

The central lighting unit in the overhead control panel has two interior lights and a centre console spotlight.

Clever stowage compartment concept

For a two-seater roadster, the new SLK has an exemplary variety of stowage facilities in the interests of versatility and day-to-day utility. The basis for this well conceived interior concept is a large glove compartment with a remarkable capacity of 6.4 litres. Useful features such as holders for a pen, credit cards and coins are integrated into the glove compartment lid.

There are three stowage compartments in the centre console – below the air conditioning controls (this can be replaced by an ashtray on request), next to the controller in front of the armrest (roller-top compartment, optionally a drinks holder) and under the armrest with a 12 V socket, USB interface and AUX connection (optionally a media interface for integration of e.g. an iPod and mobile phone connection). A net attached to the tunnel in the passenger footwell can be fitted with a flexible bottle-holder which can securely accommodate even 1.5-litre bottles.

Excellent climate

The new SLK is equipped with air conditioning as standard. The automatic climate control system THERMOTRONIC with separately adjustable interior temperatures for the driver and passenger is available on request.

An example of the detailed refinements: a windscreen demisting sensor in the stem of the rear-view mirror registers the glass temperature and interior humidity level of the new SLK. In dry weather, when no cooling is required but A/C is operating, the control system powers the compressor down but activates it as soon as it registers that the windscreen is misting up. This has two advantages:

  • The A/C function can remain active all the time, but the demand-controlled system saves energy.
  • As the air conditioning only demoisturises and cools as much air as is required to maintain the interior temperature, the air is never too dry and this benefits the physical comfort of the occupants.
