2013 Mercedes SLS AMG GT Debut

Available as a gullwing Coupe or Roadster, the SLS GT maintains its predecessor’s unmatched styling with improved performance

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT boasts enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance. Developed using experience gained from racing the SLS AMG GT3, the SLS GT features a better-breathing and higher compression version of the celebrated 6.3-liter V-8, now producing 583 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. With the added power, this hand-built eight-cylinder rockets the SLS GT to 60 mph in a stunningly quick 3.6 seconds, the newly remapped AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission changing gears even faster than before.

Masculine and decidedly athletic: with darkened headlamps and tail lights as well as red-painted brake callipers, the new SLS AMG GT also features a unique look. The wing-shaped cross fins and the star recess in the radiator grille also retain a high-gloss finish, as do the exterior mirrors and the fins on the bonnet and wings. The AMG logo on the right of the boot lid also features the additional letters “GT”.

One look at the technical specifications highlights the fact that AMG has succeeded in enhancing the dynamic profile of the SLS AMG GT even further. The maximum output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine is 435 kW (591 hp) at 6800 rpm, while the maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4750 rpm. The SLS AMG GT accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and can reach a speed of 200 km/h in 11.2 seconds.

The key data at a glance:

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT
Cylinder arrangement V8
Valves per cylinder 4
Displacement 6208 cc
Bore x stroke 102.2 x 94.6 mm
Compression ratio 11.3:1
Output 435 kW (591 hp) at 6800 rpm
Max. torque 650 Nm at 4750 rpm
Fuel consumption NEDC combined 13.2 l/100 km
CO2 emissions 308 g/km
Acceleration 0-100 km/h 3.7 s
Top speed 320 km/h*

Mercedes-AMG has achieved the output of 435 kW (591 hp) through in-engine dethrottling measures in conjunction with an increase in peak pressure. The GT version of the AMG 6.3-litre eight-cylinder front mid-engine responds with even greater agility to accelerator pedal movements and excites with even sportier-tuned performance characteristics. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7‑speed sports transmission located on the rear axle is more direct and spontaneous in the manual “M” transmission mode: thanks to newly developed gear change functions and optimised transmission control, it has been possible to shorten reaction time significantly. When changing gears manually via the real metal shift paddles on the AMG Performance steering wheel, control commands right through to the noticeable gear change are executed markedly quicker than previously – all of which is ideal when striving to achieve some ambitious lap times on a closed-off race circuit.

The reaction time experienced by the driver is made even more emotional as a result of more distinct gear changes. The automatic double-declutching function when shifting down is also more pronounced in the SLS AMG GT. Due to an increase in engine torque in manual mode, the shift procedure is even quicker than previously – and is accompanied by some passionate acoustic feedback for the driver. Overall, the optimisation of the dual clutch transmission complements the sporty nature of the SLS AMG GT perfectly.

New AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension

But it is not just the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine and the optimised dual clutch transmission which are responsible for increasing the driving dynamics of the SLS AMG GT. The newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension also enhances the vehicle’s sportiness. In the case of the SLS AMG GT, Mercedes-AMG has combined the sophisticated suspension layout with twin aluminium wishbones all round and variable, electronically controlled damping. Compared with the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, the new AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension features basically stiffer spring/damper tuning and dispenses with “Comfort” mode.

“Sport” mode is recommended as the optimum setting for undulating road surfaces and routes requiring increased suspension travel – such as found on rural roads or the legendary North Loop of the Nürburgring, for example. The control algorithm of the AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension reacts best to fluctuations in the road surface with a tendency towards lower damper force levels. The resulting effect is the best possible performance by effectively preventing rolling and pitching and providing excellent contact with the road when adopting a sporty driving style. The enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance are measureable: as part of an internal comparison with the SLS AMG, the SLS AMG GT was able to achieve faster lap times on a race track.

“Sport plus” provides higher damping forces and features specific control algorithms which have been adjusted for a decidedly sporty driving style on routes with a level road surface – such as when trying to achieve ambitious lap times on a race circuit such as Hockenheim.

Selection of suspension modes via the AMG DRIVE UNIT

Depending on the driving conditions, speed and vehicle load, the AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension adjusts the damping characteristics at lightning speed and automatically reduces the roll angle of the body. The two modes can be selected via a button on the AMG DRIVE UNIT. The activated suspension mode is indicated by means of indicator lamps on the button and the display in the AMG main menu.

As standard, the vehicle comes with 265/35 R 19 tyres on the front and 295/30 R 20 tyres on the rear, fitted to weight-optimised AMG forged light-alloy wheels featuring a 10-spoke design and painted in matt black and with a high-sheen finish. Three additional AMG light-alloy wheels are also available.

Interior with consistently sporty highlights

The interior too features a consistently sporty design: the SLS AMG GT combines the high-quality, exclusive ambience of a true AMG model with the functional atmosphere of a racing car. The sports seats not only have an embossed badge on the head restraints, but the centre sections are also finished in Alcantara ® . Continuing the theme, Alcantara ® is also found on the door centre panels. The black interior appointments are combined with red seat belts, plus all of the contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the centre console and the door panel lining is finished in red too. The floor mats also feature red edging.

The high-gloss black AMG trim on the centre console and door panel lining perfectly matches the high-gloss black edging on the adjustable cross-shaped air vents and the high-gloss real metal insert on the AMG Performance steering wheel with flattened lower section. The grip area is finished in Alcantara®, while the upper part of the steering wheel has a red 12 o’clock marking. The AMG instrument cluster is fitted with a black faceplate – at the top it also features an upshift indicator with seven LEDs.

AMG designo Exclusive STYLE leather for all SLS AMG models

Also now available for all SLS AMG models is a new, highly exclusive optional extra in the form of AMG designo Exclusive STYLE leather. This high-quality extra is available in single or two-tone finishes and comprises distinctive upholstery with a diamond design with contrasting stitching. The lavishly finished diamond design features not only on the AMG sports seats, but also on the door centre panels.

Other highlights include a designo leather finish for the entire dashboard, the beltlines and door armrests, the handrest on the centre console, AMG floor mats in black with porcelain leather edging, roof lining in Alcantara ® porcelain, and the parcel shelf (Coupé) or roll-over bar (Roadster). Seams finished in contrasting colours create exciting highlights and underscore the high-quality, hand-finished nature of this new leather package. Available colour combinations include mocha brown/porcelain, titanium grey pearl/porcelain and mystic red/porcelain. The colours of all of the elements of the interior appointment such as the roof liner, carpet and centre console are perfectly matched to each other.

Six SLS AMG models

The SLS AMG Coupé presented in 2009 was the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG. The spectacular gullwing model was followed in 2011 by the open-top SLS AMG Roadster as well as the SLS AMG GT3 customer sports racing car. Having secured 26 victories and the FIA GT3 European championship title, the SLS AMG GT3 was the most successful newcomer to the world of motorsport in 2011. With the new SLS AMG GT, available as a Coupé and Roadster, the model range has now grown to five variants. The sixth model is expected to follow in 2013 in the form of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL: Mercedes-AMG is planning an exclusive series-production run of the purely electric-driven super sports car.

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the largest Mercedes-Benz production plant in Sindelfingen. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine comes directly from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where it is hand-assembled according to the traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy.

40 significant awards for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG has succeeded in winning numerous comparison tests against a host of international competitors conducted by the international specialist media – both as the gullwing model and the Roadster. Since its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2009 and the presentation of the SLS AMG Roadster in May 2011, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG has picked up a total of 40 awards – including such major prizes as the “German Design Award”, the “Red Dot Design Award”, the “Golden Steering Wheel 2009”, “Classic of the Future”, “Sports Car of the Year”, “Best Performance Car” and “Legends on Wheels”.

Power delivery to all four permanently driven wheels is handled by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-Speed automatic transmission. Equipped with three modes and an automatic double declutching function for downshifting, the seven-speed automatic offers an impressive degree of versatility. The ECO stop/start function is active in the Controlled Efficiency mode (C) and switches off the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill. “C” also comes with a milder throttle and transmission setup with early gearshift. Pulling away generally takes place in second gear. A green “ECO” symbol in the AMG instrument cluster advises the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.

In the Sport (S) and manual (M) modes, not only is the ECO stop/start function disabled, the engine/transmission combination also has more spontaneous reactions for a considerably more agile feel. In these modes, the brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshift under full load delivers faster shift times and a thrilling acoustic effect.

Greater efficiency and performance

For greater efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-Speed automatic transmission is equipped with a highly efficient torque converter with centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber, friction-reduced bearings and transmission oil temperature management. Also contributing to reduced fuel consumption are friction-minimized axle drives, the electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, optimized belt drive and on-demand control of all auxiliary units and pumps.

Mercedes-AMG uses a standalone transfer box for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive that enhances the dynamic characteristics by splitting the drive 40:60 between the front and rear axles. Furthermore, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package, consisting of air suspension, special struts, automatic self-leveling function and Adaptive Damping System (ADS), is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. This is standard equipment and has been specifically adapted by AMG. It incorporates active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles that reduce bodyshell roll angle under cornering for enhanced agility and driving pleasure. At the same time, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM raises stability and thus safety, especially at high speeds.

Roll stabilization, springs and damping adapt automatically to the prevailing driving conditions and offer excellent ride characteristics, as well as exceptionally high stability. At the touch of a button, the GL63 AMG driver can choose between two suspension modes “Comfort” and “Sport”. The full air suspension system is speed sensitive and lowers the bodyshell at higher speeds to minimize drag, while increasing stability.

The AMG-specific elastokinematics on the front axle and the stiffer rear axle stabilizer deliver even greater steering precision. The reinforced driveline ensures the best possible transmission of power to the wheels and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system optimizes grip under varying surface conditions.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance brake system

The electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering is equipped with variable power assistance that adapts in accordance with the selected suspension mode. This system also helps to save fuel, as the power assistance only consumes energy when the driver is actually turning the steering wheel. The GL63 AMG runs as standard on machine polished, twin five-spoke 10 x 21 AMG alloy wheels sporting 295/40 R 21 tires. For the shortest possible braking distances and excellent fade resistance, there is the AMG high-performance brake system with ventilated and perforated discs at all four corners – 15.4 x 1.4 inches (front) and 13.6 x 1.0 inches (rear).

Masculine design with performance focus

Distinctive, masculine, unmistakable – these are the characteristics that define the design of the GL63 AMG. The styling fundamentals of the new GL – powerful dynamics and sporty elegance – have been further enhanced by Mercedes-AMG with specific elements that emphasize the stunning performance of this V8 top model. The hallmark, upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is augmented by high-gloss black louvers. The AMG styling includes the front valance, which features large air intakes for effective airflow to the cooling modules. On the lower air intake, shaped in true AMG fashion in the shape of a stylized “A”, is a narrow gap beneath a fine black fin, through which air flows directly to the cooling modules – a perfect combination of design and technology. The chrome trim element beneath this creates visual breadth and blends perfectly with the surrounds for the LED daytime running lamps incorporated into the outer air intakes.

The AMG front valance transitions beautifully into the flared fenders. The large 21-inch AMG alloy wheels clad in wide 295 tires add almost one inch to either side of the vehicle. The side view is further enhanced by “V8 BITURBO” badges on the fenders and illuminated sills with an aluminum finish. The flared fenders at the rear connect into the AMG rear valance, which also sports a distinctive chrome trim strip, as well asa black diffuser-type panel. A visual and acoustic highlight is provided by the two chromed twin end pipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Exclusivity and dynamics dominate the interior

Enormous attention to detail, perfect ergonomics and a generous amount of space characterize the interior of the GL63 AMG, where the emphasis is on exclusivity and dynamics. All seven seats in the high-performance SUV are upholstered in premium leather. The electrically adjustable AMG sports seats feature double stitching in a contrasting color, as well as AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the outer rear seats. The dashboard, armrests and door trim are finished in MB-Tex with double stitching.

The AMG performance steering wheel features a four-spoke design and offers optimum vehicle control with perforated leather grips, a flattened bottom and aluminum shift paddles. Four instrument dials in the AMG instrument cluster provide the driver with all necessary information. Positioned in the center is a color TFT monitor, which incorporates an AMG logo and the AMG main menu.

Mercedes A25 AMG Spied Testing

The latest spy photos show substantial updates compared to the standard A-Class syling, updated front end, bumper and wheels

Keeping the new Mercedes A25 AMG hot hatch under wraps is proving to be more difficult than Mercedes-Benz had thought. One of the newest additions to the Mercedes AMG lineup, expected to be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, was spied in souther Germany with little camouflage.

The latest spy photos show substantial updates compared to the standard A-Class syling, the most noticable being the massive AMG wheels. There is also an updated front end with slightly larger air intakes and an updated bumper for the AMG exhausts.

According to Autocar, the mega hatch is expected to be four-wheel drive with its power coming from a heavily modified version of Merc’s current M271/M274 petrol engine.

Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, the German car maker’s Nottingham-based subsidiary that builds F1 engines, has been involved in the development of the 2.0-litre engine, which Merc insists will have a higher power output that the Audi’s 2.0-litre 335bhp unit doing duty in the RS3.

The new engine is also earmarked for the larger CLC25 AMG and CLC25 Shooting Brake AMG, both scheduled to be launched next year.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG Overview

2013 SL63 AMG reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155 but can be increased to 186 mph

The stage is set for the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG, the newest version of the high-performance roadster. The SL63 impressed us on several points, its systematic lightweight construction, a boosted output, increased driving dynamics, and 30 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to an all-aluminium bodyshell, similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car, the vehicle weight has been reduced by 125 kilograms (275 lbs). With a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms (4,067 lbs) and an output of 395 kW (537 hp) or 415 kW (564 hp), the new model has the perfect recipe for unparalleled dynamism and a superior driving experience. A further boost in performance comes courtesy of a winning combination: enhanced AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control (ABC), new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance composite braking system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The expressive front section is dominated by the new “twin blade” radiator grille and the front apron’s lower cross strut in silver chrome. An enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high safety level.

Supreme performance and high efficiency: the SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power ratings for the first time. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 800 Nm of torque. If the AMG Performance package is specified, drivers will have 415 kW (564 hp) and 900 Nm at their disposal – more power than any other competitor in this segment. The result is phenomenal performance, as underlined by the acceleration times from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds respectively.

A speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds respectively. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), although this increases to 300 km/h (186 mph) (likewise electronically limited) with the AMG Performance package on board. NEDC combined consumption comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres for both power ratings – a full 4.2 litres or 30 percent less than for the outgoing model.

The eight-cylinder powerplant with the abbreviation M 157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components – for high power output – and delivers exemplary, low fuel consumption. In addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine boasts an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an ECO start/stop function. The weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive engine sound.

Intelligent lightweight construction with aluminium bodyshell and carbon fibre

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the low fuel consumption figures. The SL 63 AMG is based on a lightweight all-aluminium bodyshell similar to that of the SLS AMG super sports car. Compared with the preceding model which featured a steel construction, this design not only delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms, it also greatly enhances rigidity, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight construction also means that the components have been optimised in line with their specific purpose. Various types of processing are used for the aluminium components, for instance, which are produced as permanent mould castings (reusable metallic casting mould) or vacuum die castings before being processed into extruded sections or used as sheet aluminium with varying wall thicknesses. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the tank, the designers use even lighter magnesium material in some cases. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite material. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared with a conventional boot lid – an innovative solution that is being pioneered with the SL 63 AMG. This raft of innovative lightweight design measures means that, at an EC kerb weight of 1845 kilograms, the new SL 63 AMG is 125 kilograms lighter than the model it is replacing.

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The lightweight design measures are not just limited to the body of the SL 63 AMG, however, as the steering knuckles and spring links on the four-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension’s wheel location components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response characteristics of the spring-and-damper units.

Mercedes-AMG is remaining faithful to the ABC active spring and damper system: the new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an enhanced version of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control as standard. During the design, development and testing phases, the focus was firmly on driving dynamics and performance. To enable greater agility and faster cornering speeds, the SL 63 AMG has more negative camber all round and fully revised elastokinematics. Exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping (“Sport”) or more comfort-oriented settings for a high level of comfort on long journeys (“Comfort”) can be selected at the push of a button.

Equipped with the new, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the flagship AMG model impresses with its fleet-footed, agile cornering and exceptional feedback at the critical limits. The steering has a constant and more direct ratio, and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension settings. Further standard equipment includes 3-stage ESP®, a speciality exclusive to AMG with “SPORT Handling” mode for particularly keen drivers, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include an AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Power transmission can likewise be adapted to specific requirements, as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual). In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. Plus the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode; in addition, the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for a committed driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts than before. A welcome side effect of this is the emotive sound impression. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Newly developed AMG high-performance composite braking system

Maximum performance is also a top priority when it comes to braking: the newly developed AMG high-performance composite braking system features 390 x 36 mm composite discs with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston floating callipers at the rear. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include red-painted callipers to denote the AMG Performance package and the even more high-performance, weight-optimised AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system as seen on the SLS AMG.

The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, complete with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear tyres. Multi-spoke AMG forged wheels painted in titanium grey and with a polished finish from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres – also available in matt black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish – help to reduce the unsprung masses.

Design: dominated by the new AMG brand face

SLS AMG Roadster, SLK 55 AMG and SL 63 AMG – as the latest addition to the AMG Roadster family, the flagship V8 model displays the hallmark styling elements of a superior high-performance car from Affalterbach. The new AMG brand face comprises the twin blade radiator grille and the lower cross strut in the front apron – both featuring a solver chrome finish. The dynamically distinctive AMG bodystyling, meanwhile, comprises the front apron with large air dams and AMG-specific LED daytime driving lights. Other particularly eye-catching features include the side sill panels and the “V8 BITURBO” logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, the AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option

The sixth-generation SL retains the electrohydraulically operated vario-roof which can be retracted into the boot to save space, enabling the SL to be transformed into a roadster or a coupé, as the mood takes the driver and depending on the weather, in under 20 seconds. In contrast to the outgoing model, there are three versions to choose from for the new SL: painted roof, glass roof or the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. Its transparency can be switched to light or dark at the push of a button.

Interior: a feast for all the senses

The SL 63 AMG interior is likewise inspired by the SLS AMG and offers a feast for all the senses: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the super sports car’s styling. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in nappa leather with their own V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating, as well as AMG carbon-fibre trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG Performance steering wheel is the AMG logo in the lower metal insert. The sportily designed AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information with its TFT colour monitor, AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-calibre workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

Gary Paffett Lands on the Podium at the Lausitzring

Winner of the 2012 DTM season opener, Gary Paffett secures second place in second race of the season

After winning the DTM season opener last week, Gary Paffett, driver of the THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, managed to get on the podium again at the Lausitzring. Paffett came in a second behind Bruno Spengler of BMW who won the race in a time of 1:09:45.795. After the first two races of the season, Paffett leads the drivers’ standings with 43 points over Jamie Green, driver of the Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, who has 30 points. Team THOMAS SABO / Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG lead the team standings with Mercedes AMG in second place with 37 points. Mercedes-Benz also leads in the DTM manufacturer championship with 96 points to BMW’s 54 points and Audi’s 52 points.

Jamie Green, 2nd in the opening race of the season Hockenheim a week ago, came in 4th. Green posted a time of 1:19.025 minutes, the fastest lap of the race at the Lausitzring, the second time he’s done it at this track. In total, Mercedes has clocked eight out of thirteen fastest laps in DTM races at this track since 2001. It was also the 164th quickest lap for Mercedes-Benz since 1988.

In his 45th DTM race, Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) moved up the field from 16th place to P10 and so finished in the points. Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé) and David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) finished in P11 and P12. In his second DTM race, Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) came home in 16th place. Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) was 21st, Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) did not finish.

The start: Gary Paffett moves up one position at the start into P2. Jamie Green overtakes Mike Rockenfeller on the first turn and is fifth. Vietoris moves up the field four places from 18th on the grid.

Lap 8: Green goes by Edoardo Mortara (Audi) and is in fourth place.

Lap 11: Ralf Schumacher and Christian Vietoris overtake Adrien Tambay (Audi).

Lap 13: The pit stop window is now open. Roberto Merhi, Schumacher and Vietoris come in for their first mandatory stop.

Lap 15 : First set of fresh tyres for Paffett.

Lap 18: Mehri wins through against Tambay in the scrap for 19th position.

Lap 21: Green now leads the race from Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Paffett.

Lap 25: Second pit stop for Merhi.

Lap 26: Green still in the lead but comes in now to make his first pit stop.

Lap 28: Schumacher makes his second mandatory pit stop.

Lap 30: Vietoris overtakes Rockenfeller.

Lap 31: Schumacher goes by Rahel Frey (Audi). Paffett comes in for final mandatory pit stop.

Lap 33: Green in P2 turns into the pit lane.

Lap 36: Paffett four tenths down on Spengler in second place.

Lap 48: Robert Wickens coasts to a halt at the side of the track.

Final lap: After 52 laps and a total distance of 180.856 kilometers, Gary Paffett and Jamie Green are second and fourth. Ralf Schumacher is tenth.

Comments after the race:

Gary Paffett (THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Second:

“It’s such a pity. My THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé had enough speed to win again today. I was just a bit too far behind at the pit-stop. Having said that, my car was really quick and had a brilliant set-up, a tribute to the team. I was also so close to Bruno Spengler’s car that I was losing a bit of down force. However, I did give it my all and being second on the podium within the space of a week is a great result for us, especially after the win in the opening race.”

Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Fourth:

“My Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé was just terrific today. Augusto Farfus drove a fantastic race. I was behind him most of the time, but despite the great pace of my car, I couldn’t get past. Now the focus of my attention has to be on my home race at Brands Hatch where I’m hoping to get back on the podium again.”

Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 10th:

“Our C-Coupé was pretty quick today. The car performed flawlessly and the same applies to the strategy and the pit stops. This enabled us to progress from 16th to 10th place. If I can get a better grid position in the next race, I’ll hopefully not get stuck in traffic and be able to compete with the front runners.”

Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé), 11th:

“We were not quite as quick as at the season opener in Hockenheim. There was a lot of dirt on the track which cost us more than we expected. It’s a bit annoying that we just missed a points finish, but hopefully things will go better for us in two weeks time at Brands Hatch.”

David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 12th:

“I had to be careful at the start of the race not to collide with any other cars and make sure my car wasn’t damaged. I gave it my all and got the best possible result. I just couldn’t have managed any more than that.”

Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 16th:

“I think the race went well but I would have preferred to have been further up the field. I’m hoping that things will be better for me at Brands Hatch given a bit more preparation.”

Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 21st:

“I had a bit of a disappointing race. Straight after my first pit stop I realised that there was no way I could make any great progress in the race. I’ll just have to draw a line in the sand now and look to the future.”

Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), retired

“Unfortunately I skidded off the track on lap 48. However, I have made some progress despite this. I’ll now focus all my efforts on Brands Hatch and hopefully pick up my first DTM points there.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Both Gary and Jamie had the speed to secure P1, but at this track it is not enough to simply go faster to be able to overtake. Gary started the race from third place, a mere 0.043 seconds adrift of pole position. He immediately moved up one position as the race began but was subsequently unable to get past the rear of Spengler’s car, which he was then forced to follow for about 50 laps.

Congratulations to BMW and Bruno Spengler on their victory and many thanks to our team for their sterling work since the beginning of the season, which has enabled us to head all three championship standings – the drivers’, the team and manufacturers’ championships.

As in Hockenheim, our C-Coupé and our drivers were highly competitive and we want to make a concerted effort to build on that.”

2013 Mercedes G63 AMG and G65 AMG Overview

The new Mercedes G63 AMG outperforms the G65 AMG complete photo gallery and technical information

The new 2013 Mercedes G63 AMG impresses with a state-of-the-art powertrain, updated design and updated efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivering 544 hp and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission is the main factor behind these changes. For those of you that can hardly wait, the 2013 G63 AMG makes its U.S. showroom debut in August.

Every new AMG high-performance vehicle offers an outstanding mix of “more power from less fuel” – and the G63 AMG is no exception. The “strong man” in the AMG model range has been further enhanced with the state-of-the-art powertrain of the new ML63 AMG. The design has been comprehensively refreshed, so that, for the first time in the 33-year history of the G-Class, AMG customers can enjoy some of the latest cutting-edge systems: spray-controlled gasoline direct injection, the ECO stop/start function and alternator management. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 544 hp and a torque of 560 lb-ft. This enables the 2013 G63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph (electronically limited).

The new G63 AMG outperforms it’s predecessor, the G55 AMG KOMPRESSOR, by 44 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque, and was a clear favorite for G-Class purchasers, making-up 40 percent of sales globally. Key figures for the G63 AMG at a glance:

G63 AMG
Displacement 5,461 cc
Bore x stroke 98.0 x 90.5 mm
Compression ratio 10.0 : 1
Output 544 hp at 5,500 rpm
Max. torque 560 lb-ft at 2,000–5,000 rpm*
Acceleration 0–100 km/h 5.3
Top speed 130 mph*

* electronically limited

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic and ECO stop/start function

The vehicle’s driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption has been reduced by 13 percent (European cycle) thanks to the state-of-the-art biturbo eightcylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, the alternator management system and the ECO stop/start function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic rev-matching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of versatility. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO stop/start function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” mode is also characterized by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green “ECO” symbol, indicating when the ECO stop/start function is on.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes, the ECO stop/start function is off, and the engine and transmission behave more aggressively. Short, precisely defined ignition and injection retardations mean shorter shift times under full load. The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new torque converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearing and transmission oil thermal management.

The allure of the characteristic sound of a V8 AMG

Despite fuel efficiency improvements, there’s been no sacrifice in emotional appeal. The twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound that’s central to this vehicle’s appeal. The latest catalytic converter technology is used to ensure that the G63 AMG meets both the EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and the requirements for the US market (LEV-II standard, on-board diagnosis II and lambda probe diagnosis).

New chassis settings, optimized acoustic comfort

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG Sports chassis have been adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics of the new model. To reduce vibration and noise, the design engineers at Mercedes-AMG also implemented a wide range of measures including optimized bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels. All this ensures a more comfortable ride and helps to keep the driver fit and alert, particularly over long distances.

The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The 2013 G63 AMG runs on new AMG split 5-spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tires. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration and endurance. Ventilated all-around, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 14.8 x 1.42 inches at the front and 13 x 0.79 inches at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-caliper brake system taken from the ML 63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-caliper system on the rear axle. Standard red painted calipers are a special highlight of the G63 AMG.

Fully readjusted ESP® for with more comfort functions

The 2013 G-Class also offers a range of exemplary safety features. For example, the luxury off-roader has an updated version of ESP®, with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function, both for easier hill starts. And in an emergency braking situation, when the driver suddenly releases the accelerator, the brake system “pre-charges” the pressure in the brake lines which ensures maximum effect as soon as the brake is applied.

Characteristic AMG styling with the new face of the brand

The exterior of the eight-cylinder top-of-the-range model has also been refreshed. Following the example of the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the G63 AMG has also taken on the new face of the AMG brand. The high-gloss black “twin-blade” radiator grille with four chrome inserts makes the new G-Class model instantly recognizable as an AMG. The grille design is consistent with the car’s classic contours, with an off-road look perfectly integrated into the vehicle’s overall appearance.

Another completely new feature is the AMG bumper, with three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets. Vertical high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts create a distinctively masculine look for the G63 AMG. New LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. The AMG model also has characteristic fender flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts. Other distinctive features include the “V8 BITURBO” logo on the front fender and a standard brush guard on U.S. models.

Stylish new-look interior with increased comfort

The interior features even more innovations in comparison including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the G63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with color TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The elegant ESELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive interior is created by the designo leather upholstery with fluted leather door paneling. Options available for an even more stylish interior include trim in AMG carbon, designo Champagne white lacquer or designo light brown satin poplar.

The AMG G-Class: unmistakeable by tradition

The G 55 AMG KOMPPRESSOR has been a favourite since 2004, as a strong character, immune to passing fashions. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine initially developed 350 kW (476 hp), increasing to 368 kW (500 hp) in 2006 and 373 kW (507 hp) in 2009. The maximum torque of 700 newton metres remained unchanged, along with the vehicle’s supremely dynamic performance values. The G 55 AMG KOMPRESSOR accelerated from zero to 100/km in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h (electronically limited).

2013 Mercedes G63 AMG First Photos Released

The G63 AMG offers a new AMG radiator grille with double fin and a distinctive new front bumper with large air intakes

The first official photos of the 2013 Mercedes G63 AMG have been released by Mercedes-Benz USA just a few days after the world premiere of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

The AMG version of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers a bold front grille and the LED lights that you find on all models across the range. New side steps and fender flares have  also been included. You’ll note that it maintains the SLR-style side exhausts, which are actually pretty bad for off-roading, but insanely cool to look at as well as allowing you to clearly hear the exhaust noise in the cabin. Completing the exterior are red brake calipers and for the first time on a G-Class, 20-inch wheels.

The G63 AMG, shown in the photos, has a V8 biturbo engine (400 kW/544 hp and 760 Nm of torque(560 lb-ft)), which comes as standard with the ECO start-stop. The engine line-up is further expanded to include the G 65 AMG V12 biturbo engine (450 kW/612 hp and 1000 Nm of torque (737 lb-ft)), which will make it the most powerful production off-road vehicle in the world.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 2012 Races

Altogether, more than 45 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s will be entered for more than 15 race series on four continents

Customer Sports program of AMG vigourously starts the 2012 season. Altogether, more than 45 SLS AMG GT3s will be entered for more than 15 race series on four continents. The German team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport will enter two SLS AMG GT3 for the new FIA GT1 World Championship. Six gullwing cars are expected to fight for the overall win in the 24 Hours Nürburgring. Eight SLS AMG GT3s will be entered in the German ADAC GT Masters. The newly-formed French team, which the eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb is part of, will participate in the French GT Championship. The cooperation team and defending winner HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will face the competition in the FIA GT3 European Championship.

Commanding fights for the lead, top-class drivers and the who’s who among sports car brands – this is what national and international race series, in which customer teams enter the SLS AMG GT3 as racing car, have in common. Inspired by 26 race wins in 2011, the 1-2-3 in the Dubai 24-hours race (January 12-14, 2012) and the second place in the Bathurst 12 Hour Race in Australia (February 26, 2012), the gullwing car from Affalterbach has proved that it is a serious rival for competitors. In mid-March, many of the customer teams took advantage of the opportunity to optimally prepare for the season in test drives and setting drives on the race track of Paul Ricard in Le Castellet in Southern France.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board, Mercedes-AMG GmbH:

“Mercedes-AMG is proud of the fact that the SLS AMG GT3 is given such a positive feedback by customer teams. In the motorsport season of 2012, AMG takes part with a team of three: With the gullwing car in the customer sports programme, the new Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé in the popular DTM and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team in Formula 1 we are active all over the world. As AMG celebrates its 45th birthday, the best conditions for an exciting anniversary year are provided!”

Uli Fritz, head of AMG Customer Sports: “We want to thank the teams, which are already with us for the second year, for their confidence in us and we appreciate the new teams in the family of AMG Customer Sports. The fact that more than 45 SLS AMG GT3s are meanwhile taking part in races around the globe does not only show the great performance of the gullwing car but also proves our philosophy of using the SLS AMG GT3 merely for customer sports, not for factory entries.”

Thomas Jäger, coordinator of AMG Customer Sports: “The popularity of the SLS AMG GT3 is based on four factors: Performance, reliability, its uncomplex driveability and a good parts supply. We are working hard to continue improving all of those factors in the new 2012 season as well. The gullwing car is also appreciated for its exceptional safety level with the carbon safety cell for the driver, known from the DTM cars.”

Eight SLS AMG GT3s in the ADAC GT Masters

With the first ADAC GT Masters held in 2007, the racing series has meanwhile become very popular. Not only is the number of 44 inscripted sports cars from 13 brands impressing, but also the fact that eight SLS AMG GT3s will be fighting for the title in 2012. HEICO Motorsport will enter four cars (Alex Margaritis / Lance David Arnold, Kenneth Heyer / Christiaan Frankenhout, Harald Proczyk / Dominik Baumann and Andreas Simonsen / Maximilian Buhk). Thus HEICO Motorsport has the former Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Alex Margaritis, who is the current champion of the GT Masters, among their drivers.

In a cooperation, the teams HEICO Motorsport and Gravity-Charouz Racing will enter another gullwing car. The drivers for the HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will be Erik Janis / Jan Stovicek. MS Racing will enter two SLS AMG GT3s (Maximilian Götz / Sebastian Asch and Daniel Dobitsch / Florian Stoll). Seyffarth Motorsport (Jan Seyffarth / Maximilian Meyer) will enter one car. The ADAC GT Masters begins on 31st March in Oschersleben and comprises 16 races. Per racing weekend, two races are held and the private television station Kabel 1 will show live broadcasts of all races in full length.

VLN on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife with ten races

The Nürburgring VLN endurance championship came into existence more than 30 years ago. The race series is traditionally held on the legendary Nordschleife (“north loop”) and the short layout of the Grand Prix track. The teams of Black Falcon, HEICO Motorsport and ROWE RACING will each enter two cars for the VLN. Black Falcon Team Manager Sean Paul Breslin: “We have already known the SLS AMG GT3 since 2010. It is a fast, reliable car with a level of security which is currently unmatched by any other race car. The first of a total of ten VLN races will take place parallelly to the ADAC GT Masters on the 31st of March. About 200 cars are expected.

24h race Nürburgring – highlight of the season

The motorsport scene is awaiting this year’s 24h race Nürburgring with much excitement. The event will already take place from 16th to 20st of May and is defined as the highlight of the 2012 season by many German motorsport fans. As in the VLN, the teams of Black Falcon, HEICO Motorsport and ROWE RACING will be facing the traditional Eifel marathon with two cars each. Bernd Schneider (HEICO Motorsport) and Thomas Jäger (ROWE RACING) will be supporting the customer teams as part of the AMG support programme and will actively take part in the race. More than 700 drivers and almost 200 race cars will be entered for the traditional endurance race.

FIA GT1 World Championship with two SLS AMG GT3s

None of the races of the new FIA GT1 World Championship will take place in Germany. However, there are many indicators that the World Championship will be offering exciting motorsport: Each car brand will have two cars in start positions and nine teams of the international sports car elite confirmed their participation with cars of different manufacturers. Due to the change in regulations from the GT1 to the GT3 category, even an increase in the number of excellent performances can be expected.

The German team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport will participate with two SLS AMG GT3s. The gullwing cars will be driven by Marc Basseng / Markus Winkelhock and Thomas Jäger / Nicky Pastorelli. As part of the AMG support programme, Thomas Jäger will be supporting the team during the beginning of the season.

Team manager René Münnich: “We want to win the World Championship this year. We fought for the drivers’ and the team title for a long time in 2011. The new SLS AMG GT3 is a fast and reliable race car – the conditions for the new season could hardly be better.” The FIA GT1 Championship comprises ten races in nine countries, among which you can also find emerging markets such as China, India and Russia. The first race of the season will take place in the French location Nogaro on 8th April 2012 and the final is scheduled for 2nd December 2012 on Buddh International Circuit near New Delhi.

FIA GT3 European Championship with defending winner in start position

The FIA GT1 World Championship and the FIA GT3 European Championship will start at the same time. The first six of a total of 12 races will be held on the same tracks. Every weekend, two races will take place. The defending winner HEICO Motorsport will participate with two SLS AMG GT3s in cooperation with Gravity-Charouz Racing here as well. The cockpits of the HEICO-GRAVITY CHAROUZ TEAM will be shared by Dominik Baumann / Maxi-milian Bukh as well as Max Nilsson / Mika Vähämäki.

The team of the eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb forms a new part of the 2012 season. Sébastien Loeb Racing will face the competition in the French GT Championship with one gullwing car (Frédéric Gabillon / Gilles Vannelet).

Blancpain Endurance Championship with four teams from four countries

Four teams from four countries will participate in the Blancpain Endurance Championship: The Belgian team Viage KRK-Racing will enter two gullwing cars driven by the teams Karl Wendlinger / Anthony Kumpen / Koen Wauters und Raf Vanthoor / Dennis Retera / Marius Ritskes. Black Falcon will also enter two gullwing cars. As in 2011, the British team Preci-Spark with the twins David Jones, Godfrey Jones and Mike Jordan will also participate in the Championship. Premium Motorsports Poland will participate for the first time with one car.

In face of the Blancpain Endurance Championship’s starting field with 50 cars, it will definitely be an event with commiting motorsport. The first race will take place in Monza, Italy on 15th April 2012. The highlight of the season will be the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 28th July 2012. An endurance race from the Blancpain race series is also scheduled for Germany: The penultimate race out of a total of six races will be held on the Nürburgring on 23rd September.

2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG Commercial with Boris Becker – Video

The SL63 AMG is available with two power outputs, 537 hp and 800 Nm of torque & with the AMG Performance package 564 hp and 900 Nm

Mercedes-Benz released a new commercial for the 2013 SL63 AMG that features German tennis superstar Boris Becker.  In case you aren’t familiar with Becker, He is a six-time Grand Slam singles champion, an Olympic gold medalist, and the youngest-ever winner of the men’s singles title at Wimbledon at the age of 17.  The commercial certainly doesn’t fit the SL63 AMG, but it does give a nice look at Mercedes’ new SL AMG.

Mercedes-Benz CL Grand Edition Marks 60 Year Anniversary

The CL Grand Edition includes designo paintwork, designo leather appointments and sportily elegant 20-inch wheels

Mercedes-Benz is marking the anniversary of “60 years of the S-Class Coupé” with a new “Grand Edition” model. The features of the CL‑Class “Grand Edition” include exclusive designo paintwork, high-quality designo leather appointments and sportily elegant 20-inch wheels. AMG bodystyling elements add a distinctive touch of sportiness, while a special badge indicates the exclusive nature of this anniversary edition of the luxury coupé.

The launch of the sensational 300 S in 1952 established the lineage of today’s CL-Class. The large S-Class Coupés from Stuttgart have been considered the epitome of automotive refinement ever since. These two-door luxury-class coupés combine the comfort of a prestige luxury saloon with the dynamics of a sports car in the form of an exceptionally elegant tourer. They offer stunning design, exclusive appointments and top-flight technology. For its new “Grand Edition” special edition model, Mercedes-Benz has further honed the sophisticated and unmistakable style of this design icon, adding further to its cachet and maintaining the brand’s leadership status in the luxury car segment.

In order to emphasise further the exclusive, hand-finished character of the CL‑Class, Mercedes-Benz has furnished the “Grand Edition” with some of the finest ingredients from the exquisite designo range. Customers can choose between the three designo paint finishes of platinum black metallic, mocha black metallic and the currently very voguish matt finish of magno cashmere white. A sporty note is added to the car’s look by the AMG Sports package, with powerful front and rear aprons and distinctive side sill panels. Also included here are 20-inch light-alloy wheels in a choice of five-spoke or filigree 10-spoke designs. A “Grand Edition” badge provides a discreet indication of the CL Coupé’s exclusive-edition status.

In the interior, exquisitely handcrafted, high-quality aniline leather serves to underline the luxurious nature of the “Grand Edition”. Three stunning and tasteful leather colours are available to choose from for the interior appointments: designo aniline leather armagnac, designo aniline leather deep black and the lighter designo aniline leather porcelain. The full range of CL trim finishes is available, including black ash and high-gloss burr walnut.

As with all CL models, the CL “Grand Edition” is also exceptional in technical terms. The active suspension system Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilisation, for example, sets the benchmark for driving dynamics and comfort on all rear-wheel drive CL models. Safety systems such as the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE® automatic emergency braking and the optional Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Adaptive Highbeam Assist systems, ensure that the CL takes pole position in the luxury coupé segment.

And the same is true of the engine range: the current V8 biturbo with a displacement of 4.6 litres and sophisticated spray-guided direct petrol injection system in the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY delivers 320 kW (435 hp), provides torque of 700 newton metres and opens up a whole new dimension of efficiency in the luxury coupé segment (9.5 l/100 km combined; 224 g/km CO2). The same engine is also used in the CL 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The pinnacle of the engine range is provided by the CL 600 with its 380 kW (517 hp) 12-cylinder biturbo (displacement: 5.5 litres).

Irrespective of which base model is chosen, the CL “Grand Edition” is available for a package price of 4850 euros (excl. VAT). This represents a benefit to the customer of up to 38 percent. The complex designo magno paintwork is priced at an additional 1500 euros.

2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG Complete Details Revealed

The 2013 SL63 AMG, due out later this year, offers more power, lighter weight and 30 percent better gas mileage

Yesterday we brought you news of the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG Roadster’s release at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.  As promised, we have the full run down on Mercedes’ latest roadster, from the numbers to the optional extras. The SL 63 AMG is scheduled to follow the U.S. debut of the new-generation SL550 roadster later this year, featuring more power, lighter weight and an approximately 30 percent better gas mileage.

Thanks to its aluminum bodyshell (similar to the SLS AMG super sports car), the weight of the new SL63 AMG has been reduced by 275 pounds. With a curb weight of 4,059 pounds (estimated) and 530 horsepower, the new model boasts unparalleled performance and an extraordinary driving experience.

Performance is also enhanced with a winning combination: AMG active suspension (based on ABC Active Body Control), new AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the AMG high-performance compound brake system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. Topping off this impressive package is an enticing mix of stylish design, extensive standard equipment and a high safety level.

Ola Källenius, CEO at Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new SL 63 AMG is yet another masterpiece from Mercedes-AMG. Be it driving dynamics, lightweight construction or efficiency – the SL 63 AMG represents a giant leap forward. Following on from the SLS AMG Roadster and the SLK 55 AMG, it now makes our unrivalled roadster family practically complete.”

For the first time, the SL 63 AMG is available with a choice of two power levels. Normally, the AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged “biturbo” V8 delivers 530 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. With the optional AMG Performance Package, these figures rise to 557 hp and 664 lb-ft respectively.

The result is acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 186 mph with the AMG Performance package, and thanks to its new direct-injection V8 engine, gas mileage is a full 30 percent (estimated) better than the outgoing model.

The new V8 powerplant in the SL63 AMG (identified internally as the M157) features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output and low fuel consumption. In addition to spray-guided direct injection, the engine boasts an all-aluminum block, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with variable valve timing, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an ECO stop/start system. The weight-optimized AMG sports exhaust system with a pair of twin tailpipes produces a distinctive engine sound.

Intelligent lightweight construction: aluminum body and carbon fiber

Intelligent lightweight construction is one of the major factors behind the impressive fuel mileage figures of the SL 63 AMG. Based on a lightweight aluminum bodyshell (similar to the SLS AMG super sports car), this design not only delivers significant weight savings but it also greatly enhances body rigidity, and as a result, safety and comfort as well.

Intelligent lightweight construction also means that components have been optimized for their specific purpose. For example, high-strength steel tubes are integrated into the aluminum roof pillars for safety reasons, while several types of processing are used for the aluminum parts – permanent mold castings or vacuum die castings are processed into extruded sections or used as sheet aluminum with varying wall thicknesses. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the fuel tank, designers use magnesium, which is lighter than aluminum.

Even the trunk lid helps to trim weight further. For the first time on a mass- produced car, its inner frame is made from a lightweight carbon-fiber composite, which is bonded to a plastic outer shell, saving 11 pounds compared to a conventional trunk lid. Overall, a raft of innovative lightweight-design measures means the new SL 63 AMG is 275 pounds lighter than the model it replaces.

AMG sports suspension based on ABC active suspension

Lightweight-design measures are not just limited to the body of the SL 63 AMG. The steering knuckles and suspension arms on the front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension parts are made of aluminium. The reduced unsprung weight enhances both agility and spring and shock response.

The new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an enhanced version of the AMG sports suspension that’s based on the Mercedes-Benz ABC active suspension. During its design, development and testing phases, the focus was clearly on driving dynamics and performance.

At the push of a button, the driver can select “Sport” for reduced body roll and firm shock damping or “Comfort” for a high level of comfort on long trips. For greater agility and faster cornering speeds, the SL 63 AMG has more negative camber all round and fully revised elastokinematics.

The new SL63 AMG is equipped with a new, electro-mechanical AMG speed- sensitive sports steering for agile cornering and exceptionally good feedback during high-performance driving. The steering has a faster, constant ratio and variable power assistance, which adjusts automatically to the suspension settings.

Standard equipment also includes three-stage ESP® – its “SPORT Handling” mode for accomplished drivers is exclusive to AMG. Options available from the AMG Performance Studio include an AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Providing the direct feedback of a manual transmission with the total convenience of an automatic, the seven-speed MCT with AMG SPEEDSHIFT features an innovative start-up clutch, which runs in an oil bath and replaces a conventional torque converter. Thanks to its low rotational mass, the start-up clutch helps the transmission respond instantaneously and dynamically with no slip.

Fitted with seven speeds, four shift modes and a double-clutching function, the MCT transmission offers impressive versatility and even faster shift times. With four drive modes: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), the transmission provides customized shift control for maximum driving pleasure, and does so with no interruption of power. In the “C”mode, smooth shifts coupled with a “soft” accelerator response are set up for silky smooth power transfer. Also active in the “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function turns off the engine when the car is at a standstill.

New AMG high-performance compound brakes

A newly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system features 15.3-inch compound discs with six-piston fixed calipers at the front and 14.2- inch integral discs with single-piston floating calipers at the rear.

An electric parking brake is standard, while options include ceramic high- performance compound brakes (similar to the SLS AMG) and red-painted calipers that identify the AMG Performance package.

The SL 63 AMG leaves the factory fitted with five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted high-gloss titanium grey, and are shod with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear tires. Optional multi-spoke AMG forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio (also available in matte black including a rim flange with a high-sheen finish) with 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 20 rear tires help reduce unsprung weight.

Design: Stylish and Dynamic

SL 63 AMG, SLS AMG roadster and SLK 55 AMG – as the latest addition to the AMG roadster family, the SL63 AMG displays the hallmark styling elements of a superior high-performance car from Affalterbach:

Distinctive AMG bodystyling includes a front apron with a large air dam, AMG- specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower cross strut in silver chrome. Among its eye-catching features are a new AMG radiator grille with a double louver in silver chrome, side sill panels and “V8 BITURBO” logos on the vent grilles with fins in silver chrome. At the rear, an AMG spoiler lip, two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust and a diffuser-style rear apron with a body-colored insert draw the design to a fitting conclusion.

MAGIC SKY CONTROL

The sixth-generation SL features a retractable hardtop that can transform the quiet, weather-tight coupe into a top-down roadster in under 20 seconds. The new SL has two versions to choose from: a glass roof or the unique panoramic roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which can be switched from light to dark tinting at the push of a button.

Interior: A Feast for All the Senses

Inspired by the SLS AMG, the SL 63 AMG interior offers a feast for all the senses: four air vents styled like jet engines, an E-SELECT lever and AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the super sports car. Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in single-tone or two-tone nappa leather with a unique seat upholstery design and AMG badges in the seat backrests, a multicontour function and seat heating as well as AMG carbon-fiber trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels, ambient lighting and an IWC-design analogue clock. One of the stand-out details on the AMG performance steering wheel is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert. A sporty AMG instrument cluster provides a wealth of information and includes a TFT colour monitor, AMG start- up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER. Outstanding material quality and high-caliber workmanship underline the attention to detail paid by the Mercedes and AMG experts.

The World’s Safest Roadster

A crash-optimized aluminum body structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE® and assistance systems on a par with the flagship S-Class make the SL the world’s safest roadster. The rigid aluminum bodyshell forms a strong occupant compartment with defined deformation zones at the front and rear. If the vehicle rolls over, A-pillars made from a steel-aluminum material mix and two automatic roll-over bars help to protect the occupants.

Restraint systems, including two-stage driver and passenger airbags, have been further enhanced. Headbags cover the side head-impact area, and thorax air bags in the backrests can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Other new standard features for the SL include Mercedes-developed NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints and a front end with a large, yielding impact area and an active front hood to help protect pedestrians.

The latest photos of the 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG made their way to the web today, thanks to the hand photogs over at MotorAuthority. Dressed in less camouflage then ever before, we are able to get a good look at the lines and details of the new Mercedes roadster.

Standing out are the larger air intakes, cross-drilled and larger brake rotors, upgraded calipers, and updated front spoiler shape, as well as the quad exhaust pipes and new rear diffuser design.

What is still hiding under the camouflage is the SL63’s nose and while still hidden under a thin sheet I am going to go out on a limb and say that it will have a strong influence from the SLS.

You can expect to see the world debut of the 2013 SL63 AMG at the Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks but if that is a little out of your way, the very first U.S. delivered 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG will be up for auction at the 6th annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance on February 25th.  Last year’s 2011 Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance auctioned off a 2012 SLS AMG and a 2012 CLS63 AMG Limited Edition, so the 2013 SL63 AMG being auctioned off will be in good company.

As always, stay tuned as we will bring you the latest photos and information as it comes in.
