2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe

The C63 S Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and the C63 Coupe in 3.9 seconds

Mercedes-AMG is setting another milestone in the brand’s history: the new 2017 AMG C63 Coupe is the next step on the way to more technical and visual distinctiveness. The far-reaching technical modifications are evident at first sight: strikingly flared front and rear wheel arches, an increased track width and larger wheels give the C63 Coupe a muscular look while also providing a basis for highly agile longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The brand’s typical “Driving Performance” is also taken to new heights with the C63 Coupe. The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, with 469 hp in standard trim or 503 hp in the C63 S, is a completely in-house development from Affalterbach. In addition, the sophisticated AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers, the set-up of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the rear-axle limited-slip differential and the dynamic engine mounts have all been developed by AMG.

Fascinating design visualizes outstanding performance

The Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe already fascinates at first glance with its impressive proportions. The expressive exterior design differs significantly from the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe model, which shares merely the same doors, roof and trunk lid. The powerful 8-cylinder engine, together with the increased track width on the front and rear axles, calls for a redesigned front end and a model- specific rear assembly as well as new front and rear fenders. The flared wheel arches make the AMG Coupe 2.51-inches (64 mm) wider at the front and 2.59- inches (66 mm) wider at the rear, enabling the vehicle to hug the road better.

The larger wheel arches allow the use of wider tires, up to 10 inches (255 millimeters) on the front axle and up to 11.2 inches (285 millimeters) on the rear, contributing to improved lateral acceleration, traction and agility. Under the outer skin, the body structure has been reinforced in key areas to transfer and compensate for the extreme longitudinal and lateral forces the powertrain and suspension are capable of.

The 2.36-inch (60 mm) longer aluminum hood is adorned by two distinctive powerdomes, which are among the typical distinguishing features and underscore the muscular appearance. The extremely wide front section is characterized by large air inlets and precisely positioned aero flics. The low, arrow-shaped “twin blade” grill with AMG lettering visually lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity. The typical AMG “A-wing” front spoiler is three-dimensional, also serving as an air deflector for the three cooling air inlets. Additional aero flics ensure an optimal flow of air to the cooling modules, while a front splitter at the bottom of the front apron helps reduce front-axle lift.

As a result of the newly designed body on the C-Class Coupe, no compromises were required with regard to the connection of the aprons and other components; every joint and light-catching contour blends in harmoniously with the overall design. The side line of the C63 Coupe presents an entirely unique profile thanks to large wheels which finish flush with the body on the far outside and unique side skirts. In the diagonal view from behind, the muscular line from roof to shoulder via the rear quarter panel and wheel cutout looks especially impressive, lending emphasis to the impression of an intricately modelled sculpture with alternating light reflections. In typical sports car fashion, the exterior rear-view mirrors have been mounted on the door rather than on the A-pillar.

Taking its inspiration from the S-Class Coupe, the completely redesigned rear end includes a diffuser insert, a feature typically seen in the world of motor sport. The two chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the AMG exhaust system are perfectly integrated into the diffuser. The special design of the laterally positioned, optical air outlet openings improves rear air flow, allowing it to break away with aerodynamically advantageous precision. Features such as the narrow rear reflectors reinforce the impression of width. The trunk lid includes a narrow spoiler lip in the form of a sharp blade. It not only looks elegant, but also significantly reduces the rear-axle lift.

Top on performance

The AMG C63 Coupe occupies an exceptional status among the competition, being the only vehicle in the segment to boast an 8-cylinder biturbo engine. Mercedes- AMG thus meets the wishes of those customers who desire a combination of a highly emotional, unmistakable engine sound with torquey power delivery.

The driver also benefits from unrivalled performance: the C63 S Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and the C63 Coupe in 3.9 seconds. This makes the Coupe just a fraction faster than the Sedan – thanks to the wider tires and shorter- legged rear-axle ratios. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph on the C63 Coupe, and 180 mph on the C63 S Coupe.

2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe 4.0-liter 8-cylinder biturbo engine

New V-8 biturbo closely related to the engine in the Mercedes-AMG GT

The 4.0-liter 8-cylinder biturbo engine is already used in the C63 Sedan and in the AMG GT S sports car (with dry sump lubrication). This engine features two turbochargers positioned in-between the engine’s cylinder banks, otherwise known as a “hot inside V.” The main advantages of this design are the compact engine construction, optimal response and low exhaust gas emissions.

Exhaust system with flap technology for variable engine sound

The iconic V-8 engine sound was specially tailored for the C63 Coupe. A model- specific exhaust system with flap technology is equipped as standard. It is automatically map-controlled depending on the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode, the power demanded by the driver and engine speed. The engine sound varies between a discreet note suitable for long-distance driving and more robust and emotional sound. Optionally available is the Performance exhaust system, which allows the exhaust note to be modulated at the press of a button.

Faster gearshifts: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission

The transmission plays a major part in the direct and sporty character of the new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission impresses with its tailor-made dynamics and high variability. Whether automatic or initiated by the driver using the steering wheel shift paddles, upshifts and downshifts are executed noticeably faster than in the previous model. This increased response time is made possible by an even sportier set-up of the engine and transmission parameters.

Specially developed suspension for maximum lateral and longitudinal dynamics

The impressive agility and high cornering speed of the C63 Coupe are thanks to the completely redesigned suspension. A four-link front suspension with radial, racing- style brake connections is used with model-specific steering knuckles and a wider track, allowing for greater lateral acceleration. The rear axle has also been completely redesigned for the Coupe. The multi-link concept impresses with highly precise wheel control and increased stiffness. The AMG-specific rear axle carrier makes the increased track width possible; the contact surfaces of the wheel bearings were moved about an inch (25 mm) further towards the outside when compared with the Sedan. Other measures include AMG-specific wheel carriers, stiffer elastokinematic tuning and higher negative camber.

With the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping, the customer can choose between maximum sportiness and excellent long-distance comfort in three stages, all at the press of a button.

Rear-axle limited-slip differential: optimal traction for both road and track

For improved traction and vehicle dynamics, the C63 Coupe is equipped with a mechanical rear-axle limited-slip differential, while the C63 S Coupe comes with an electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential. Both differentials reduce the slip on the inside wheel when cornering without control interventions in the braking system, allowing the driver to accelerate out of corners earlier thanks to the improved traction. Other benefits include increased stability under heavy braking and improved traction upon acceleration. The model-specific, completely redesigned rear axle was specially adapted to the higher vehicle dynamics of the Coupe.

The greatest benefit of the electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential – installed as standard on the C63 S – is the even more precise and faster control, which further raises the critical limit of drivability. The 3-stage ESP® with “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” settings works in perfect unison with the rear-axle limited-slip differential and is optimally tuned for the C63 Coupe’s outstanding driving dynamics.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes

The driver is able to influence the characteristics of the C63 with four different AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, with the C63 S receiving the additional “Race” mode. The driver is able to choose a desired driving experience, from comfortable and economical to super-sporty, all from a controller to the left of the touchpad. An “Individual” mode can be configured by the driver, offering maximum customizability.

C63 S with dynamic engine mounts as standard

Unique in its segment, the C63 S Coupe – like the Sedan – is equipped with dynamic engine mounts. These help to further resolve the conflicting aims of comfort and dynamic performance. Soft engine mounts improve comfort, as they provide more effective decoupling of noise and vibration, however, handling and agility benefit from a generally stiffer mount set-up. Dynamic mounts are instantly and variably able to adapt their stiffness to the driving conditions and requirements of the driver. These measures enhance the vehicle’s precision when driven dynamically. For example, the steering response and feedback are even more direct.

Safety of the highest caliber

The C63 Coupe offers a supreme level of safety coming standard with ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which helps to prevent rear-end collisions. Many other optional assistance systems are available to increase both comfort and safety.

Sportiness of a coupé, strengths of an SUV

The new GLE 63 Coupé combines the sportiness of a coupé with the strengths of an SUV. High agility, distinctive engine sound and typical sports car acceleration are united with poise and assurance, tremendous pulling power and perfect traction.

The typical SUV raised seating position and effortlessly unhurried superiority on the road, paired with typical AMG longitudinal and transverse dynamics and direct response to driver commands, result in an intense driving feel. The wide choice of different worlds of experience is based, among other things, on the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, which for the first time permit such a wide spread of driving dynamics.

The five transmission modes of “Slippery”, “Individual”, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the centre console, deliver fundamentally different driving dynamics. Be it the response of the engine, the shift strategy of the transmission, ESP® thresholds, power assistance for the steering or characteristics of the dampers: the system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters for distinct driving experiences.

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine: powerful or extra-powerful

In terms of drive system, GLE 63 Coupé customers have a choice between powerful and extra-powerful: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp) and a torque of 700 Newton-metres. The S‑Model raises the respective values to 430 kW (585 hp) and 760 Newton-metres. The difference in output and torque comes courtesy of a higher maximum charge pressure.

Whichever variant the customer opts for, the 8-cylinder powerplant, which is assembled according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy, delivers the familiar powerful performance: thus, the GLE 63 Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds (S-Model). Fuel consumption values of 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC (combined); CO2: 279 g/km) and compliance with the EU6 standard demonstrate that maximum power, efficiency and environmental compatibility are by no means mutually exclusive for Mercedes-AMG.

As customary for a typical AMG model, the sound from the new GLE 63 Coupé is unmistakable. Customers can further emphasise the distinctive engine sound from the sports exhaust system, because a Performance exhaust system is optionally available for both output variants. Those who value a more noticeable sound can opt for an even more emotively appealing V8 engine sound – and can experience the dynamic performance even more intensely.

Power transmission: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

The power transmission, too, is made to measure. Depending on the mode selected for the variable dynamic handling control system DYNAMIC SELECT, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC impresses with its great agility and superior responsiveness. The transmission has a wide-ranging potential. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for a sportier driving style as well as smooth, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.

The M button allows the driver to emphasise the sporty character and to shift gear exclusively using the steering-wheel shift paddles. As the seven-speed automatic transmission now shifts independently neither on kick-down nor upon reaching the maximum engine speed limit, it is possible to savour the tremendous pulling power in all engine speed ranges. Further specialities for the dynamically focused driver: the automatic double-declutching function when shifting down and the short-term M mode, which combines the performance of manual gear changes with automatic up- and downshifts. This allows the driver to enjoy the vehicle’s impressive performance to the full. If the driver has shifted up or down manually using the shift paddle, the transmission independently switches back to the automatic shift mode after a set period of time.

The seven-speed automatic transmission features a dual-turbine torsional damper with speed-sensitive centrifugal pendulum, which minimises vibrations while enhancing the passengers’ perceived comfort.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased power distribution

With 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG uses a specially designed transfer case: this exclusive solution distributes the drive power in a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles, resulting in greater agility about the vertical axis of the vehicle. The pay-off for the driver: even greater driving pleasure during high-speed cornering. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package, consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and infinitely variable damping characteristics ADS Plus, is combined with active roll stabilisation ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM. This standard-fit system employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body’s roll angle during cornering. The reduced roll angle and outstanding cornering properties make for enhanced transverse dynamics and driving pleasure. At the same time, the system provides increased driving stability and, therefore, safety, especially at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. “Sport Plus” mode puts the emphasis on maximum possible transverse dynamics. Conversely, “Comfort” mode enables maximum ride comfort.

The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability. The current operating conditions are detected via the steering angle sensor, four level sensors, three body sensors, the driving speed as well as the positions of the brake pedal and accelerator. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe

DYNAMIC SELECT changes the driving dynamics in no time at all

Perfect interplay between all systems makes for a superior experience in the cockpit – whatever the driving situation or road conditions. As an additional bonus, DYNAMIC SELECT modifies the driving dynamics in no time at all. The GLE 63 Coupé adapts its character at lightning speed, depending on which transmission mode is activated. In “Comfort” mode, the control thresholds of the dynamic handling control systems ASR, ESP® with Dynamic Cornering Assist and the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS are configured for moderate, restrained dynamics. “Sport” and “Sport Plus” permit greater longitudinal and transverse dynamics for more intense driving pleasure. In “Slippery transmission” mode, on the other hand, the focus is on optimum traction and maximum driving stability in adverse road conditions. “Individual” mode allows the driver to design their own personal set-up consisting of engine characteristics, shift strategy and damper settings.

AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system and AMG high-performance braking system

In combination with the AMG-specific Sports Direct-Steer system, compact Performance steering wheel, elastokinematics on the front axle and more robustly designed rear-axle stabiliser bar, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions. The variable steering ratio makes for significantly improved agility, while high-speed driving safety is maintained. The variable power assistance is dependent on the vehicle speed and the DYNAMIC SELECT programme and adapts perfectly to the driving situation.

Extremely short stopping distances and high stability: these are the strengths of the AMG high-performance braking system with all-round ventilated and perforated brake discs of size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 (rear) and silver-painted brake callipers with AMG lettering.

Design: commanding, extroverted, proud and with “A-wing”

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé skilfully embodies the firmly established principles of Mercedes-Benz design: sensuousness and clarity. The top-of-the-range V8 model from Affalterbach manages in an emotively appealing way to bring the fascination of motor sport to everyday life with a powerful dominance. A very first glance reveals the new four-door coupé to be an extrovert, proudly standing on its large wheels.

The GLE 63 Coupé is the first SUV from Affalterbach to adopt the AMG design philosophy, familiar from many other high-performance vehicles, with the characteristic “A-wing” in the front apron. This makes the SUV coupé clearly recognisable as a member of the AMG model family. Viewed from the front, the model’s sculptural design idiom is also defined by the bonnet with its two dynamic powerdomes and new radiator grille – as is typical of AMG, it features a twin louvre in silver chrome as well as a large, central Mercedes star.

The GLE 63 Coupé displays visual dominance with its “A-wing”. This design feature in the form of the stylised “A”, a hallmark of AMG, is three-dimensional and also serves as an air guide for the three air openings. The A-wing is painted in the colour of the vehicle, while the trim strip is in silver chrome. The new front view is especially characterised by the two lateral, large air inlets, while the above-positioned, black flics ensure an optimal flow of air onto the cooling modules. At the lower end of the front apron, a front splitter in the colour of the vehicle helps to reduce lift. The standard equipment package includes three-dimensionally formed LED headlamps.

Dominance is reinforced by lateral flared wheel arches

Flared wheel arches in black make for a systematic continuation of the visual dominance along the sides. Behind the wheel cutout, “V8 BITURBO” lettering points to the superior engine power of the GLE 63 Coupé. An even more distinctive look is optionally available from illuminated aluminium-look side running boards with anti-slip rubber studs. The extroverted look is enhanced by impressive AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels of size 53.3 cm (21-inch) with tyres of size 285/45 R 21 (front axle) and 325/40 R 21 (rear axle).

The rear end of the vehicle shows clear similarities with the design of the S‑Class Coupé: with its narrow tail lights in three-dimensional look, above-positioned, broad chrome badge and prominently placed Mercedes star, the GLE 63 Coupé has a decidedly sporty look. Mercedes-AMG reinforces the visual dynamics with some specific design elements: the spoiler lip on the boot lid further improves the driving stability at high speeds, while the visual, lateral air outlets in the rear apron improve the cd value. The AMG rear apron is given a dynamic look by diffuser fins and the integrated, chrome-plated twin tailpipe trims of the sports exhaust system. The shape of the silver chrome trim strip is reminiscent of the “A-wing” in the front apron. As a result of the new nomenclature, the prominent AMG lettering is placed to the left of the Mercedes star, with the model identification GLE 63 to the right.

Exterior differentiation: GLE 63 S Coupé even more impressive

The A-wing on the GLE 63 S Coupé is painted in high-gloss black. In combination with the silver-chrome trim strip and black flics, this makes for an even sportier look. AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels of size 55.9 cm (22‑inch), painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, ensure that the S‑Model exudes an even more impressive air. Optimum traction of the light-alloy wheels is guaranteed by tyres of size 285/40 R 22 (front axle) and 325/35 R 22 (rear axle). The GLE 63 S Coupé is recognisable by its red-painted brake callipers; in addition, the GLE 63 model identification bears a special “S”.

High-grade interior: exclusive design elements and appointments

Like the exterior design, the interior of the GLE 63 Coupé also boasts many exclusive design elements and appointments. High-grade materials, first-class precision and a luxurious quality feel produce a fascination potential typical of AMG. Trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium provide clever highlights.

Thanks to their specific upholstery with greater contouring and higher side bolsters at the front, the sports seats offer excellent lateral support. Perforated nappa leather, special seat upholstery layout with topstitching and AMG badges make for an exclusive look and feel, which is further complemented by the 3-spoke Performance steering wheel: the steering-wheel rim, with flattened bottom section, in black nappa leather with perforated grip area, assists a sporty driving style. Silver aluminium shift paddles with “UP” and “DOWN” lettering and a precise pressure point act as an invitation to manual gear changing.

The instrument panel on the GLE 63 Coupé is in black ARTICO man-made leather. The partially integrated central display visualises the individual DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes with animated graphics. The centre console accommodates the COMAND controller with optimally ergonomically positioned touchpad; on the right is the DYNAMIC SELECT rotary actuator for the various transmission modes. Located above is the M button for the manual transmission mode.

Instrument cluster in exciting AMG design

Two large round dials with silver chrome surrounds and the central 11.4 cm (4.4-inch) multifunction display provide the driver with comprehensive information. The typical AMG equipment package includes sporty dials in carbon-fibre look with 320 km/h speedometer scale and red pointers, as well as the main menu including RACETIMER, manual gear indicator and AMG start-up screen.

Optimal infotainment is guaranteed by the Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module for the use of Mercedes connect me services in Europe (may vary from country to country).

S-Model even more exclusive also in the interior

The higher-powered Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupé also offers genuine added benefits in the interior. For even more intense contact with the vehicle, the grip area of the Performance steering wheel is in DINAMICA microfibre. A sporty look also dominates the driver’s field of vision: the instrument cluster has an even higher-class look with fine red scale graduations around the speedometer and rev counter and a grey decorative band. The passengers are accommodated on high-grade exclusive nappa leather upholstery. AMG medallions in the head restraints lend the interior a special, luxurious note. Set against black interior appointments, the grey seat belts and grey contrasting topstitching produce yet further highlights.

AMG Adds New AMG Sport Line

Mercedes-AMG is establishing a new product line by the name of "AMG Sport", offering sporty performance and technical refinements

The sports car and high-performance brand Mercedes-AMG will achieve a new sales record of well over 40,000 units this year. Its entry into the compact segment and the broadening of its product range have provided the Affalterbach-based company with access to new customer groups and secured success in established and new markets. New models developed entirely in-house, such as the SLS AMG and the most recently presented Mercedes-AMG GT, consolidate the brand’s success story and place it firmly on course for sustained growth.

Mercedes-AMG 2014: AMG Sport models

“We are proud of these successes, as they provide the basis for the next stage of our growth strategy, which we are now launching,” explains Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “In the next three years we aim to more than double our total sales for 2013.”

To render the AMG brand and its technology more accessible, Mercedes-AMG is establishing a new product line by the name of “AMG Sport”, offering sporty performance and technical refinements. The AMG Sport models will fill the gap between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the classic AMG models, thereby underpinning the brand’s growth strategy on a sustained basis.

Opening up new customer groups and segments will raise the company’s profile and boost AMG’s sales potential worldwide. “The new Sport models represent a convincing proposition for our customers: genuine sports car technology becomes accessible, appealing to an even broader-ranging clientele worldwide,” observes Tobias Moers. “For all our dynamic growth, we remain true to our brand claim of “Driving Performance”.

The AMG Sport models bear out the high-performance brand’s claim with uprated engine output, all-wheel drive as standard and special chassis components and brake systems from the classic AMG models. Signature AMG driving dynamics and a highly emotional driving experience are the tangible outcome for the customer. The first two AMG Sport models are set to be unveiled at the International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2015. It is planned to add further models to this new product line in due course.

The Affalterbach-based sports car brand has set itself high aims not only with regard to customer enthusiasm and growth: the fleet consumption has been reduced by 35% by means of a comprehensive range of technical measures carried out in the past five years as part of the “AMG Green Performance Strategy”. The AMG models are already among the most fuel-efficient and low-emission vehicles in their respective segments, with the new engine technologies and all-embracing lightweight design set to render them yet more efficient. The introduction of the Sport models in 2015 will make an additional significant contribution towards lowering the fuel consumption of the AMG fleet. The company headquarters in Affalterbach and the logistics organisation are also all set for sustained growth and represent the benchmark in efficiency, flexibility and environment-friendliness. The company has received recognition from the “German Sustainable Building Council”, for example, and is the winner of the “Deutscher Logistik-Preis 2014” from the BVL Global Supply Chain Network for both its environment-friendliness and its supply chain strategy.

Mercedes AMG In Talks To Buy MV Augusta

It is being reported by a company insider that Mercedes-AMG is readying a potential bid to buy Italian motorcycle maker MV Augusta

It is being reported by a company insider that Mercedes-AMG is readying a potential bid to buy Italian motorcycle maker MV Augusta.

Having lost Ducati to Audi in 2012, despite having a deep relationship with the Bologna-based bike brand, Mercedes-AMG is now looking at a deal to snap up Italy’s other member of red-painted motorcycling royalty.

MV Augusta has been sold a number of times over the past two decades: to Cagiva in 1999; to Lotus parent Proton in 2004; to a finance company in 2005; to Harley Davidson in 2008; and then finally to Claudio Castiglione, the architect of Ducati’s great renaissance, in 2010.

Castiglione died a year later, but not before he had sketched out a plan to revive the once-great Italian marque. His holding company now owns and runs the MV Augusta.

No details of the deal have yet been given, but AMG executives tell us they are already deep into exploring the possibilities of a tie-up.

The AMG tie-up with Ducati was scheduled to deliver co-branded motorcycles in a bid to extend the brand into a younger audience – and boost AMG’s green credentials.

The degree of certainty of the AMG MV Augusta deal has been increased by the presence of Investindustrial, a private equity fund, in other Mercedes-AMG business.

The fund, which is owned by the Bonomi family, was the owner of Ducati prior to the sale to Audi. It also owns a 37.5 per cent in Aston Martin, who AMG is working closely with supplying engines and electrical systems for the next-generation AM models.

So the two groups know each other well and have mutual interests. Maybe including MV Augusta in the not-too-distant future…

Known for their bold designs, Hamann turned their attention to the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, transforming it into the Hamann Typhoon

Known for their bold designs, the tuning firm Hamann recently turned their attention to the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG, transforming it into a model they’re calling the Hamann Typhoon.  From a power standpoint, its figures are impressive:  600hp (441kW) and 576lb-ft (782Nm) of torque, enough to propel the SUV from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds and help it reach a top speed of 162 mph.

From a styling standpoint, let’s just say the general population will know you’re not rollin’ in a stock G55 AMG.  There’s a new front grille, fender vents and rear bumper; a custom suspension setup; high performance brakes; 24-inch light alloy wheels, and yes, a six-tailpipe side-vented exhaust system.  Inside, a 24-pieced carbon fiber trim set, a Hamann steering wheel, illuminated door sills and a remarkably bright velour upholstery package are also present.

2013 Mercedes AMG Sales Set Record

2013 was the most successful year in the history for Mercedes AMG with around 32,200 sports and performance models sold

2013 was the most successful year ever in the history of Mercedes-AMG. With around 32,200 sports cars and performance models sold, the Mercedes-Benz’s performance brand reached a new sales record.

Mercedes AMG

Mercedes AMG

“We are looking back on the company’s strongest year ever,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “This extraordinary growth has exceeded even our own expectations. It shows once again that with our “AMG Performance 50″ growth strategy, we’re on the right track. It’s a strategy we will continue to build on.”

Strong performance in main markets

In its three biggest markets US, Germany and UK, the Affalterbach-based company recorded strong demand in 2013, driven by new products and the extension of its distribution network. Among the factors driving this growth was the broad introduction of the all-wheel drive 4MATIC, newly developed by AMG with focus on performance aspects: the facelifts of the E 63 AMG as well as the CLS 63 AMG are now available with AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology and as powerful S-Model. There was also increasing demand for Mercedes-AMG’s SUV models and the new compact cars A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. The product offensive is rounded off by the recently introduced S 63 AMG, which is facing highest demands.

Through the product offensive and the introduction of the compact CLA 45 AMG in 2013, Mercedes-AMG was able to steadily increase its sales in the main market USA: With a growth of around 20 percent, the sales volume was considerably above the previous year’s level. AMG’s two main European markets, Germany (up 10 percent) and the UK (up 40 percent) posted strong sales, despite the overall market weakness in the EU. Both markets exceeded their 2013 sales targets.

Along with the main markets Mercedes-AMG also posted significant growth in Japan, China, Canada, Russia and Brazil. In the growth market of China, 2013 sales were up around a quarter on the previous year, although the new entry-level A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG models, as well as the new S 63 AMG 4MATIC, will not be available there this year.

Growth potential from increased number of model variations

This dynamic growth of the performance brand has been made possible by the expansion of the product range and entering attractive new segments. With the sporty A 45 AMG, the four-door coupe CLA 45 AMG and the GLA 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG is offering three new entry-level models. Aimed at customers in their thirties to mid-forties, these models are an attempt by AMG to reach out to new target groups. All three models are equipped with AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology and the world’s most powerful four-cylinder production engine.

At the upper ends of the vehicle range, new AMG models of the S-Class and E-Class were introduced in 2013 as well as a new CLS 63 AMG. The E-Class and the CLS 63 AMG are also available as ultra-powerful S-Model and, for the first time, with all-wheel drive. The new vehicles and technology packages have been a hit right from the start: Around 90 percent of buyers of the new E 63 AMG chose AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology. The SLS AMG super sports car has also racked up impressive sales: Since the first model in this series rolled off the production line in the spring of 2010, over 10,000 SLS AMGs have been sold. Later this year, AMG plans to enter a new segment with a sports car it has fully developed itself.

Extending the distribution network

The AMG Performance Centers are a central plank of the AMG Performance 50 growth strategy. These sales points, which have been part of the Mercedes-Benz distribution network since 2008, create optimal market reach. The centers have their own distinct branding and focus on AMG performance brand products and concepts, as well as on the individualisation options that form part of the designo range. At the end of the year, Mercedes-AMG had a total of 375 AMG performance centers in 27 countries. Further sites are being planned in order to build on the excellent customer service that AMG customers expect.

Innovation and development skills at the Affalterbach plant

In 2013 the company again proved itself to be the Daimler Group’s standard-bearer when it comes to technological innovation. AMG engineers at the Affalterbach site cover every aspect of the vehicle development process and are involved in the development processes of Mercedes-Benz at the earliest possible stage. For example, in addition to the new 4MATIC drive system all four-wheel-drive models launched in 2013 have axle components developed of Mercedes-AMG as well as completely new front axles. The four-wheel-drive models underline the claim of leadership in the respective segment in interaction with the specific suspension. Apart from that, the company also develops its own sports cars. As the first vehicle to be fully developed by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG is proof of the competence and passion that exist at the company in Affalterbach. And last year, AMG was also responsible for bringing the world’s most powerful electric super sports car to market, the SLS AMG coupe Electric Drive. The all-electric SLS AMG combines innovations in material combination of aluminium and CRP (carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic) and the newly developed powerful battery and inherits an outstanding driving dynamic thanks to AMG Torque Dynamics. In addition, the lightweight construction strategy known as AMG Lightweight Performance was applied throughout the development of the electric SLS AMG and the new S-Class. The new S 63 AMG weighs up to 100 kilograms less than its predecessor.

From a two-man company to a high-performance brand

AMG (Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach) was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and from the very outset achieved numerous successes in the field of motorsport. Today, the former two-man company employs a workforce of more than 1,200 at its plant in Affalterbach, and over the past 47 years has become the technological spearhead and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. The AMG brand promise of ‘Driving Performance’ stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement in all four business divisions. Alongside the development of high-performance vehicles, AMG’s second business division, Sport Packages & Models, provides an entry into the world of AMG. AMG’s performance specialists were closely involved in the development of the A 250 Sport and CLA 250 Sport. The sport models “engineered by AMG” were in high demand in 2013 as well and were handed over to more than 12,000 customers. Special customer specifications are carried out in the third business division, the AMG Performance Studio, where individualised AMG vehicles are developed and produced in strictly limited editions. The fourth business division, Driving Academy & Motorsports, has also achieved considerable success. Last year, the AMG Driving Academy hosted over 11,000 participants worldwide and was able to enhance its customer offering with new events in the United Arab Emirates and Poland. And of course the performance brand has remained true to its motor racing roots, chalking up impressive wins on international circuits with the SLS AMG GT3.

UK Mercedes C-Class AMG Sport Edition Revealed

The Mercedes AMG Sport Edition will replace the AMG Sport and AMG Sport Plus

Mercedes-Benz UK has announced a range of C-Class enhancements, including a new model line, new option packages and simplified product offer, representing exceptional price and value.

The new AMG Sport Edition replaces the AMG Sport and AMG Sport Plus model lines and now applicable to all Saloon, Estate and Coupé variants.

The AMG Sport Edition retains the AMG bodystyling, steering wheel, alloy wheels and 15 mm lower sports suspension from the outgoing AMG Sport model, but gains an AMG boot lid spoiler (Saloon and Coupé), dark-tinted headlamps and high-gloss black grille to enhance visual appeal.

Inside, the new trim line benefits from AMG Sport Plus seats upholstered in black Artico and Dinamica with blue/grey contrast stitching and split folding rear seats in the Saloon (already standard in Estate and Coupé). In addition to the dark brushed aluminium trim, the gear shift gaiter also now has grey contrast stitching, as does the Dinamica-covered door panel trim.

When the AMG Sport Edition is fitted with the optional 18-inch seven-spoke AMG alloy wheels (£300 including VAT), it represents a 50 per cent saving versus the outgoing AMG Sport Plus model, which was priced at £3,000 over the Executive SE model line – the new AMG Sport Edition is just a £1,500 price walk.

In addition, there are two optional packages. The first is the Premium Package (£1,595 including VAT), which includes COMAND Online with Media Interface, reversing camera, heated front seats, Lighting Package and DAB digital radio.

The Premium Plus Package (£2,495 including VAT), offers up to a 45 per cent saving on individual options and features the same content as the Premium pack, with the added benefit of a panoramic glass sunroof.

The engine and line combinations for C-Class were made-up of a total of 47 variants, including seven engines and three model lines. The new 2014 enhancements mean that this has now been reduced to just 19, consisting of two trims and four engines.

The new AMG Sport Edition is available on C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI engines from £30,170 OTR for Saloon, £31,370 OTR for Estate and £32,455 OTR for Coupé.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG Line Photos and Details

If you want the look of a C63 AMG without the power, the C-Class AMG Line is perfect for you

It’s been nearly two weeks since we brought to you the official reveal of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and now we have new photos from Daimler on the AMG Line thanks to our friends at MBPassion.

The Mercedes C63 AMG is one of my favorite AMG vehicles, but it has a price tag that matches it’s power.  For some, the look of the C63 AMG is enough for them, and for those that want the look and not the feel, AMG has an exterior package that will introduced in the later part of 2014.

The AMG exterior package includes an AMG front bumper, apron and  mesh grille, side skirts and aluminum window surrounds as well as an updated rear bumper.  There are also several chrome inserts and a chromed lower front lip. Adding to its sleek sportiness, the C-Class AMG Line has a 15mm lowered sports suspension and rides on AMG five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.

Additional upgrades on the AMG line is uprated perforated brakes that includes Mercedes-Benz lettering on the calipers and an updated integrated dual exhaust system.

How Well Do You Know AMG History

Mercedes AMG started out in a garage and quickly grew into a racing powerhouse

In 1965 AMG founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher built their first 300 SE direct injection engine at Aufrecht’s home for fun

AMG stands for Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach – the last names of the founding fathers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher along with Aufrecht’s birthplace of Großaspach

The first AMG model developed after Daimler-Benz AG and AMG signed a cooperation contract was the Mercedes C63 AMG in 1993

In 2005, Mercedes-AMG became solely owned by Daimler AG when Aufrecht sold his remaining shares

AMG also provides engines for the Zonda and Huayra cars including the M120 exclusively for the Pagani.  It is the largest displacement naturally aspirated engine provided by AMG

In 2013, AMG reached a partnership with Aston Martin to provide engines and components for the next generation of Aston Martin vehicles

The only AMG car not to follow the “one man, one engine” policy was a CLS 63 AMG that was built by one AMG mechanic with the help of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher

In 1989, Jochen Mass, Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens won the Le Mans 24-hour race in a Sauber C9 AMG

Top Ten Ways to Spot an AMG

We've posted photos with explanations on what the easiest way to spot an AMG is as well as some more hidden ways

An AMG is not simply a Mercedes-Benz with more horsepower – it’s virtually a completely new automobile.

But how do you spot a genuine AMG?  We’ve posted photos in the gallery below of the front, side and rear with explanations on what the easiest way to spot an AMG is as well as some more hidden ways to know.

In order to achieve this goal, AMG engineers are involved at the earliest concept phase when the Mercedes-Benz development team designs a new model. Only in this way can AMG integrate their high-performance technology and tailor it to the car’s performance profile. The key questions that AMG engineers ask are: What do we expect of the longitudinal dynamics? And of the lateral dynamics? What requirements are to be placed on sportiness? And which on comfort? The answers to these questions result in the fundamental set-up of the car.

In the next step, they get down to the details – and thus to answering questions such as: Which components must be changed compared with the original series car in order to achieve the required performance and dynamics? This naturally applies first of all to the suspension including axles, brakes and dampers; secondly to the complete drivetrain including transmission and engine; and thirdly to body modifications such as increasing its stiffness and enhancing aerodynamics.

But the depth of development at AMG goes far beyond that: When AMG designs a single body part, they always do so with the goal of improving defined driving characteristics. Almost every improvement involves modifying or developing other components. The result of this chain reaction is a high-performance automobile with more than 500 original AMG parts.
