Mystery C-Class Spied with S-Class Dashboard

An interesting Mercedes-Benz C-Class prototype was spotted by our spy photographers who notice it had the S-Class digital dashboard

An interesting Mercedes-Benz C-Class prototype was spotted by our spy photographers who notice it had the S-Class digital dashboard.

Daimler commenced production of the C-Class W205 on February 4, 2014 so it hasn’t even been a full year since the compact executive sedan hit the assembly line in Bremen and already they are testing out some changes. It is way too early in the game for a facelift as a mid-cycle refresh is likely scheduled for 2017 so why did Mercedes-Benz slap the S-Class digital dashboard onto this prototype?

Our best guess is that Mercedes plans to use the digital layout on the C-Class Coupe which is due later this year in both standard and AMG specifications. Chances are only the higher-end versions will come equipped with the digital dash which could also find its way inside the top-spec C-Class Cabriolet although at the moment this is only an assumption.

As a final note, in a couple of the attached spy images you will notice a camouflaged prototype of the S-Class Pullman due later this year.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

"Personal Luxury is Alive and Well." -Car and Driver

No one talks about personal luxury cars anymore; use of that term peaked some 40 years ago. But the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG coupe reminds us that, even if there isn’t a modern term for the concept, there remains a distinction between the average luxury car and one so egotistically over-the-top that it exists solely to serve, appease, and pamper its driver.

Indeed, the S63 coupe is one of a few cars that exude power and opulence and status and rich excesses all while delivering a driving experience that makes you enjoy the time behind the wheel. For those who prefer to be driven, there are Bentleys and Rolls-Royces. For those who drive, the two-door S-class offers $172,450 of leather and luxury, a 3.7-second run to 60 mph, and a three-pointed star on the grille.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

Although the car is new, its place in the Mercedes lineup is not. The S-class coupe replaces the old CL-class as part of a scheme to reduce the dizzying number of Mercedes nameplates before the proliferation of new models makes things completely unintelligible. The big two-door co-opts the S-class sedan’s name—which it did just ahead of a massive renaming strategy—as well as that car’s design influence, to dramatic effect. This is a private luxury lounge that just happens to be capable of moving at speeds up to 187 mph. The dashboard ripples gracefully from top to bottom and side to side with beautiful swaths of unbroken trim that stretch from door to door. Intricate perforated patterns turn the leather upholstery and aluminum speaker grilles into artwork. The seats warm and knead you into a content, doughy bag of meat at the press of a button.

The back seat offers relatively roomy accommodations, but the S-class coupe possesses the ability to make anything other than its front seats feel like a dark, dank prison. And while we can’t imagine anyone with a billion-dollar net worth suffering the indignity of clambering into the rear compartment of this two-door, that hasn’t stopped Mercedes from offering an $1100 champagne cooler that resides between the rear seats.

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe

So rich is the luxury in the S63 AMG coupe that the performance seems like an afterthought. At 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 has just 14 horsepower on the old Performance pack–equipped CL63 AMG. More effective is the new, standard 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system, which trims time off of the low end of acceleration sprints. The S63 coupe launches with the smooth, unrelenting pull of a riptide as the four-wheel traction and 4744-pound weight mask just how quick it is. Triple-digit speeds arrive in just 8.5 seconds. The quarter-mile flashes by at 120 mph in 12 seconds flat. Both the 60-mph and quarter-mile times top those of the defunct CL63 AMG by 0.3 second and the Bentley Continental GT V-8 S by two-tenths. Continental ContiSportContact 5P tires deliver an impressive 0.96 g of roadholding and a 70-mph stopping distance of 157 feet. And when you come to your senses and remember that there’s a Ferrari at home for driving like a lunatic, you can switch on the adaptive cruise control and the steering assist that guides the car in the center of its lane.

Personal luxury is getting to choose when to enjoy your car’s performance and when the car does the commuting for you. This car proves it.

Mercedes-Maybach Set To Debut at LA Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz will take the wraps off the all-new Mercedes-Maybach sedan later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz will take the wraps off the all-new Mercedes-Maybach sedan later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a model that will sit between the S-class and the Pullman in Stuttgart’s brand hierarchy. Codenamed X222, the extra-long wheelbase sedan will mark the return of the Maybach name, this time as a subbrand akin to Mercedes-AMG, and will feature a thoroughly reworked rear passenger compartment and C-pillar section, along with new rear doors as shown in these renderings.

Mercedes-Maybach to debut at LA Auto Show

The Mercedes-Maybach will be one of four sedan variants of the current W222 S-class, alongside long and short-wheelbase versions of the base sedan and the Pullman limousine. The Mercedes-Maybach will be aimed at the Bentley Mulsanne and the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II, as well as the long-wheelbase version of the Range Rover that debuted a few months ago. The car is expected to be approximately 10 inches longer than the long-wheelbase S-class, which has a wheelbase of 206.5 inches.

The Mercedes-Maybach is expected to be powered by the twin-turbocharged V12 producing 523-hp and 612 lb-ft of torque found in the current Mercedes-Benz S600. The sedan is also expected to be offered with a version of the the twin-turbocharged V12 currently found in the S65 AMG producing 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, though it is not clear at this time whether all versions of the upcoming super-sedan will receive 4Matic all-wheel drive. Mercedes’ Magic Body Control will certainly make an appearance in this versions of the S-class, perhaps alongside 4Matic, systems that cannot currently not be ordered together in the short and long-wheelbase S-class sedan just due to space limitations.

In terms of interior layout, the Mercedes-Maybach will closely mirror the former Maybach 62, complete with reclining rear seats and enhanced infotainment features for rear seat passengers. It is not clear at this time whether the Mercedes-Maybach will be offered with a partition and a powered window between the front and rear passengers compartments, something that was an option on the Maybach 62. The Mercedes-Maybach will also offer an increased range of interior materials and options, in addition to some new tech not currently offered in the S-class.

Sometime later, Mercedes-Benz is also expected to offer an armored version of the Mercedes-Maybach, though like the standard sedan and Pullman variants, it will not be available in the U.S. The armored version is expected to offer VR9-level ballistic protection, as in the S600 Guard.

The Mercedes-Maybach will mark the return of the Maybach name to the lineup, which existed as a standalone brand from 2002 until 2010. The Maybach 57 and Maybach 62, which made use of the old W140 platform, were originally planned to be badged as Mercedes-Benz Maybachs until relatively late in the development process. Sales turned out to be a bit of a disappoinment for Mercedes-Benz over the eight-year production run. The upcoming Mercedes-Maybach will instead be an extra-long-wheelbase version of the S-class, akin to personal S-class cars built by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet in the 1990s that also featured a re-engineered rear passenger section with redesigned rear doors and a luxurious interior.

Details on pricing will be announced after the model’s debut at the LA Auto Show, though the base version of the Mercedes-Maybach is expected to start at around $200,000 in the U.S., with the armored versions for other markets being $100,000 dearer. An even more exclusive version of the W222 S-class — the Pullman limousine — is expected to be unveiled (with relatively little fanfare) a few months later. Developed and built by Brabus, the Pullman limousine will feature an extra middle row of rear-facing conference-style seats in a 2+2+2 layout, and a half-million-dollar starting price for the unarmored version.

Stuttgart has more Maybach versions of existing cars in the works, and the GL-class has been mentioned as another model which may see a Maybach variant in the near future. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 and S65 are expected to be available for ordering in the spring of 2015.

Mercedes S-Class Pullman Limousine Rendering

IAB digital artist Shoeb, presents an early look at the S Class Pullman Limousine which is expected to launch next year

The 2014 Mercedes S Class’ portfolio is yet to be completed, with models like the Coupe-based convertible and the uber luxurious Maybach and Pullman variants still in the pipeline. IAB digital artist Shoeb, presents an early look at the S Class Pullman Limousine which is expected to launch next year.

The Pullman would get the 6L V12 engine.

The Pullman would get the 6L V12 engine.

Based on spyshots, we can report that the S Class Pullman’s front and rear fascias are identical to the regular S Class. The major change, or rather the purpose of the Pullman is its middle section which has been extended to accommodate the third door. Early reports suggest that the Pullman could be about 1,165 mm longer than the 5,246 mm long S Class LWB.

Power for the Pullman will come from the flagship engine in the S Class range. The engine in question is a 6.0-liter V12 motor making about 530 hp and 830 Nm of torque, paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine is currently offered on the S600 and the S65 AMG (where it develops a bit more power and torque).

S550 4MATIC Coupe Interior

The interior design of the new S-Class Coupe is an expression of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom – sensual purity

The interior design of the new S-Class Coupe is an expression of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom – sensual purity. An enthralling combination of sculptural sensuous volume elements and components, and the clear geometry of its basic architecture create an avant-garde design idiom. A high class appeal, quality workmanship and exceptional touch and feel are a treat for the passengers’ senses, so that the car’s interior represents the highest level of “modern luxury”.

Click or head below for a complete photo gallery.

The S-Class Coupe’s dashboard fascinates with its spectacular architecture, giving rise to a vehicle of unique character in the upper coupe segment. The dashboard is divided into a very clear top-layer section with an expansive “wrap-around” effect extending to the doors, and an extremely low, sculptural “floating” lower section. This striking architecture was made possible by repositioning the airbag to a completely new low location. This concept enables the large, two-part wide-screen format TFT display to be placed in a prominent “hovering” position in front of this trim surface. In addition, it is stylishly highlighted with an ambience lighting corona. Under the display, the sporty elevated center console extends to the vehicle rear. All lids and armrests are lavishly covered in leather.

The use of the finest materials, surfaces, color combinations and seam designs contributes towards achieving a truly exclusive car interior. Air vents, switches, belt extender rosette and trim elements are in electroplated “Silver Shadow”. This gives the trim elements a particularly high value appeal and enhances the three-dimensional effect of their surfaces.

In front of the armrest the standard touchpad can be found, with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any of the head unit’s languages. Diverse controls, e.g. for the multi-media system, are arrayed as keys in a semicircle in front of the central control element.

Both the front and the rear seats have a pronounced sporty character, the two rear seats are designed as individual seats. The Exclusive upholsteries optionally includes seats in Exclusive nappa designo leather with a striking diamond backstitching pattern on backrests and seating surfaces. The front-seat seatbelts are integrated in the rear side panelling without interrupting the waistline with windows open; seatbelt extenders make them easily accessible for the seat occupants.

There is a fluid transition between the doors and the rear side panelling, emphasizing the vehicle’s well-being quality. Here too, surfaces and controls are masterfully executed in top-quality materials; the configuration with the standard Burmester® surround sound system and the optional Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system offers a special highlight in form and function.

New interior colors such as Bengal Red/Black, Crystal Grey/Black, Saddle Brown/Black, and Porcelain/Espresso Brown allow individualization of the interior. The standard ambient lighting with several lighting moods provides the corresponding wellness character. The customer can choose from seven lighting moods.

Mercedes-Benz S550 4MATIC Coupe Exterior

The flowing profile of the S-Class Coupe embodies sensual purity in a modern way and is emphasized by the hallmark Mercedes dropping line

The flowing profile of the S-Class Coupe embodies sensual purity in a modern way and is emphasized by the hallmark Mercedes dropping line. The long hood with pronounced lines and powerdomes, the low greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as well as the large wheels (19- to 20-inch) and the broad visual effect created by the rear reinforce the S-Class Coupe’s aspirations as a masterpiece of automotive refinement. With a wheelbase of 116 inches, the Coupe is 198 inches long, with a width of 75 inches and a height of 56 inches.

Click or head below for a complete photo gallery.

Its convex and concave modeled surfaces lend the S-Class Coupe a sensuous character. The sculpted appearance lends it classic elegance that forms a perfect symbiosis with the modern-progressive design idiom.

The view from the side is marked by the dropping line in keeping with the emotional character of the vehicle. It underscores the brand-typical proportions like a signature. The lines are deliberately reduced to the basics. This creates a sensual, timeless purity.

The creative interaction of diverse design elements lends the S-Class Coupe a superior, self-confident front: in the center of the vehicle front end is the further-evolved three-dimensional diamond radiator grille, whose structure is defined by rectangular, chrome-plated elements. It incorporates the central Mercedes three-pointed star and one louvre.

The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime running lamps lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the S-Class Coupe the eyebrows have been further refined with a semi-circular counter-curve. In combination with the standard LED Intelligent Light System, the Edition 1 S550 special edition vehicle will also feature unique headlamps with no less than 47 Swarovski crystals. 17 angular crystals form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps.

The side profile is defined by the dome-shaped stretched roof line and the frameless doors. An elegant 3D continuous chrome frame surrounds the glass areas that are uninterrupted by B-pillars. This underscores the Mercedes-typical coupe look.

A muscle above the rear axle extending from the side wall generates a sense of lightness and dynamic spirit even at a standstill. The positively arched surfaces and lines of the side walls flow into the rear end with a dramatic tapered effect.

The rear end with its surfaces, broad shoulders and distinctive character lines rounds off the emotive overall appearance. Moving the license plate mounting to the lower part of the rear bumper is a particularly striking modification. It allows the trunk lid to be made especially sleek in this area. The three-pointed star is, so to say, free-standing and can thus be made more prominent for greater effect. In addition it pivots outwards in order to locate the rearview camera and the surround view camera in an elegantly functional manner.

The arrangement of the LEDs in two horizontal rows in the two-piece tail lamps reveals cutting-edge technology and underscores the sporty character of the vehicle rear, careful attention to detail and the car’s premium value. Form and function fuse into a perfect unity. Part of the light functions is located in the wings, the other in the trunk lid. This characteristic arrangement makes the vehicle highly recognizable by night, too.

The two-part rear bumper underscores the sportiness indicated by the front design. The diffusor, painted in high-sheen black, meets in equal measure the requirements made by aerodynamics and by design. Below it there is, as in the front bumper, a horizontal wing in silver look. Integrated in the diffusor are the premium-quality tailpipes.

The S-Class Coupe features a standard panorama roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.32 m2, it appears almost 150 percent larger than on the predecessor model. MAGIC SKY CONTROL makes it possible to switch the transparency of the roof at the push of a button, from light to dark. When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, is reduced to less than 1% and thus effectively diminishes heating up of the vehicle. In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind.

The new Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID blends an ultramodern hybrid drive configuration with the unique innovations and the luxurious equipment and appointments of the S-Class. The luxury sedan impresses with exceptional dynamism and efficiency. Thanks to standard pre-entry climate control it also offers unique climate comfort. The first certified three-liter luxury sedan in the world is a further milestone on the road to emission-free mobility.

Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID

Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID

“The S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID is the first luxury sedan with the performance of a V8 and the fuel consumption of a compact model. The greatest challenge in this is to translate efficiency into superior performance. In this respect there is a highly interesting parallel with our successful Formula 1 racing car, which likewise has a turbocharged V6 engine and a high-tech hybrid drive,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

“The new S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers our customers the entire range of innovations that make our new S-Class so successful, and thanks to its intelligent operating strategy ensures outstanding driving pleasure and dynamism combined with the highest efficiency. Moreover, it allows completely emission-free driving for up to 20 miles,” adds Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers a system output of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft torque, sprints from 0 to 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds and can drive up to 20 miles purely electrically. Key elements of this impressive output are the V6 biturbo and the intelligent hybrid drive. The new high-voltage lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 8.7 kWh can be externally recharged via the charging socket in the right side of the rear bumper.

The S550 Plug-In Hybrid model has environmental certificates. These document the model’s environmental performance from development through to recycling across the entire lifecycle, and the performance is certified to internationally recognized standards by independent experts.

Regarding CO2 emissions, the certificate of the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID states: “Over the entire lifecycle encompassing manufacture, use of over 300,000 kilometres (186,000 miles) and recycling, clear advantages result when compared with the S550. External charging with the European electricity mix can cut CO2 emissions by some 43 percent (35 tonnes). Through the use of renewably generated hydroelectricity a 56 percent reduction (46 tonnes) is possible.”

The hybrid transmission is based on the 7-speed automatic transmission. The plug-in-hybrid system in the S-Class is based on the Mercedes-Benz parallel hybrid modular system. The common system-specific feature is the additional clutch integrated between combustion engine and electric motor. On the one hand, it decouples the combustion engine during purely electric operation; on the other hand, if the combustion engine is employed it affords the possibility to move off drawing on the performance of a wet start-up clutch. The clutch then substitutes for the torque converter and requires no additional space owing to its complete integration in the torque converter housing.

Haptic accelerator pedal: support for the driver

Climb in, start, drive off and, as well as exemplary efficiency, on request experience via kickdown the special acceleration of the electric motor – this is how easy hybrid driving is with the new S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID. For in everyday use it moves just as easily as any other automatic transmission car.

In the background, depending on the chosen operating mode, the intelligent operating strategy automatically selects the ideal combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor and in so doing not only adapts its strategy according to the charge status of the battery; it also foresightedly adjusts it according to the traffic or route. Anyone wanting to can also intervene manually and with the aid of four operating modes and three transmission modes regulate the hybrid interplay themselves.

What is known as the haptic accelerator pedal can signal via a double impulse when drivers should take their foot off the accelerator for sailing and recuperating. During electric operation it can supply the driver with feedback on the switch-on point of the combustion engine. The energy flow can be shown in all operating states in the instrument cluster and in the central display if this is selected by the customer.

Extensive standard equipment, extended pre-entry climate control

The standard equipment in the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID is extensive and offers a world premiere: theextended pre-entry climate control. This is target value controlled, meaning that at the start of the journey the S-Class is air conditioned to the preset temperature if the driver has entered the departure time via the S-Class Vehicle Homepage. This is possible due to the electrically driven refrigerant compressor and electric heating elements for the heated air. In addition, when preheating it is not just the interior air but also the seats, steering wheel and armrests in the doors and center console which are heated, and when cooling the seat ventilation is also activated if the respective optional extra is on board.

Also standard on the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID are LED High Performance headlamps and LED tail lights, leather upholstery, COMAND Online, touchpad, dual-zone Automatic climate control, Memory package for driver and front passenger, ambient lighting in seven colors and the air suspension AIRMATIC with continuously variable damping system. The basic safety equipment includes PRE-SAFE®, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (collision warning including Adaptive Brake Assist), ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE® impulse, and Crosswind Assist.

The Mercedes-Benz hybrid strategy: emphasis on plug-in drives

The S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID is the first hybrid model in the U.S. for the new S-Class. The series production launch of this technology began at Mercedes-Benz in 2009. The company is among the leaders in the field of purely electric mobility, and in the years to come the main emphasis will be on plug-in hybrids.

Hybrid drives, the combination of internal combustion engine and electric drive, help cut overall fuel consumption and boost performance since the electric drive replaces or supports the combustion engine whenever the engine characteristics are unfavorable — normally in part-load operation when little power is required.

The largest potential for lowering the energy consumption of the hybrid drive systems lies in maximizing energy recovery during coasting and braking. Upon depressing the brake pedal the deceleration is initially effected by the electric motor and not by the disc brakes. The hybrid models of the new S-Class are the first to use a recuperative braking system of the second generation. It ensures an unnoticeable overlapping of the conventional mechanical brakes and the electric braking performance of the electric motor in generator mode.

Intelligent operating strategy

For efficient operation, foresighted driving, avoiding unnecessary braking and accelerating maneuvers have always been the best strategy. This gains an all new importance in a hybrid model: braking maneuvers serve not only deceleration, but can also be used to recuperate energy. In addition, the route has considerable influence on the most efficient charging and discharge of the high-voltage battery.

The intelligent operating strategy supports the driver comprehensively yet unobtrusively to achieve the most efficient driving style. The control strategy, for example, seeks to ensure that the battery, if at all possible, is flat at the end of an uphill stretch so that it can be recharged going downhill. Another key point is the requirement that urban areas be reached with a fully charged battery, if possible, so that the vehicle can be operated in stop-and-go traffic electrically – frequently and efficiently.

In the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID the energy management system covers these three areas:

  • route-based: automatically or by way of four operating modes
  • driver-based: by way of three transmission modes
  • traffic-based: with the aid of radar.
Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID

Mercedes-Benz S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID

Charging: power from a socket

The battery of the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID is safely fitted into the rear end of the S-Class to save space. An intelligent on-board charging system enables the battery to be charged at any conventional household power socket. The supply of electricity to the car will be made even easier in the future through inductive, cableless charging.

The S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID stores electric energy in a lithium-ion battery on lithium-iron phosphate basis. The water-cooled energy storage unit has an overall capacity of 8.7 kWh, a total weight of 251 lbs and a spatial volume of 3.4 cubic feet.

To ensure the highest levels of crash safety and dynamic handling and also maximum trunk space, the housing is made of die-cast aluminium and the high-voltage battery is located in the rear of the vehicle above the rear axle. The space available there is put to optimal use, and the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID thus takes first place among the plug-in hybrids in terms of trunk capacity (12.2 cubic feet) and luggage compartment accessibility.

The high-voltage battery of the S550 PLUG-IN HYBRID can be charged via external electricity mains using a 3.6 kW on-board charger. The unit is permanently installed in the vehicle and charges single-phase up to 16 A. The connection for the charging cable is located under a flap of the rear bumper underneath the tail light on the right-hand side. An automatic lock ensures that the cable cannot be separated from the vehicle by unauthorized persons. The new S-Class can be charged in two hours anywhere in the world, e.g. at a wallbox or a charging pole (400 V, 16 A). Alternatively, charging via house connection is also possible. Depending on the connection a charge of time e.g. of two hours and 45 minutes can be attained (with 230 V and 13 A).

There is no question that the current-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has set the standard for interior comfort and technology, but the S-Class due out in 2018 will take things to a whole new level.

When talking to Auto Express, Mercedes’ chief interior designer Jan Kaul said that the brand intends to steal back a reputation for “wow factor” cabin design from Audi and recent all-electric upstart Tesla. While the Stuttgart brand clearly respects the work of its rivals–which have set new standards for quality and for infotainment respectively–Kaul believes Mercedes can do things better.

He also says that Mercedes won’t adopt technology just for the sake of it.

“We only do things because that are right for us, not because our rivals do,” he said.

That was a direct reference to Audi’s switch from a central display screen to the new virtual instrument binnacle of the new Audi TT. Kaul says it’s something Mercedes “will look at”, but may choose not to adopt. A huge central touchscreen display like that of the Tesla Model S is even less likely–the size of the screen means some functions are too low on the dashboard, causing potential distractions.

Likewise, Mercedes’ recent trend for high-set, floating infotainment screens will stay for the time being. Kaul is dismissive of rivals’ screens which slide into the dashboard when the car is turned off, as an expensive and complicated way of doing something unnecessary. When drivers get into the car, they want access to the screen–so it might as well be there already. Mercedes won’t opt for a detachable unit either, which risks coming adrift in a crash.

The rest of the S-Class interior will also see changes. Mercedes is currently researching gesture controls for suitable functions. Future vehicles will likely use a combination–voice controls are better for navigation input, for example–but gesture could be useful too. Slimmer one-piece seats are also being investigated–sure to give cabins a more futuristic feel, and 3-D printing is also on Mercedes’ radar.

Like S-Class models before it, the next is sure to be a technological tour de force.

Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Official Announcement – Debut in New York

Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe Photos and Details, World Premiere will be at the New York International Auto Show

The new S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range. Exciting lines underpin this twodoor model’s design. Power and sensual purity combine to give the vehicle irresistible presence and breathtaking performance. Equally impressive is the combination of outstanding driving dynamics, advanced lightweight construction and groundbreaking efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine is a paragon of poise and assurance. Boasting an output of 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the S63 AMG Coupe delivers exceptional performance with remarkably low fuel consumption. In addition, performance- oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive (33/67% split) will come standard in the U.S. market for optimum traction in any driving situation.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new S63 AMG Coupe is another exciting AMG dream car in the luxury segment. Now the S-Class Coupe also comes with performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive – as we rigorously pursue our all-wheel-drive initiative. Mercedes-AMG is putting the pedal to the metal again in the new year. Our model initiative is set to continue at blistering pace in 2014.”

Up to 140 pounds lighter thanks to AMG Lightweight Performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is the latest model to benefit from the systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy. Lightweight construction has reduced the vehicle weight by up to 140 pounds – even though the car has a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than the preceding model. This weight savings was achieved largely thanks to the use of a lightweight lithium-ion battery, optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance composite braking system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin and the front end of the body are made of aluminium. The reduced weight improves driving dynamics and cuts fuel consumption, while the low power-to-weight ratio results in impressive performance: the S63 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output, torque and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains one of the most efficient series-produced V8 engines of all. With an output of 577 hp and 664 ft-lb of torque, the AMG eightcylinder unit meets even the most demanding of requirements. Compared to the previous CL63 AMG model, engine output has been increased by 41 hp and torque by 74 lb-ft. Yet the S63 AMG Coupe still consumes less fuel.

The model at a glance:

Individuality: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sport transmission combines perfectly with the V8 biturbo engine. Maximum agility and exciting dynamics are the two key strengths of this transmission, which is used exclusively at AMG. Drivers can configure their own personal set-up, depending on their driving style. There are three modes to choose from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual). The ECO start/stop function is fitted as standard.

AMG sport exhaust system with automatic exhaust flaps

Emotional and sporty performance or restrained and relaxing cruising: the S63 AMG Coupe even has a choice of bespoke sounds. The AMG sport exhaust system meets individual driver requirements as it has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The result is an even fuller, hallmark AMG emotive engine sound.

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all AMG V8 and V12 engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the S63 AMG Coupe is assembled by hand at the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. Highly qualified engine fitters assemble the engines in Affalterbach according to the strictest quality standards based on the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the engine technician’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz high-performance brand.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

For the first time, the S63 AMG Coupe comes standard in the U.S. market with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. With permanent all-wheel drive, 33 percent of the engine torque is sent to the front axle and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive also enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces when equipped with winter tires**. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which maximizes the frictional connection potential of all four wheels.

**all S63 AMG Coupe and Sedan models come equipped with standard summer performance tires.

AIRMATIC air suspension

The S63 AMG Coupe 4MATIC features the full air-suspension system AIRMATIC with the adaptive damping system ADS PLUS. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe. These measures enhance the vehicle’s agility for performance driving.

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe wheel

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

Systematic lightweight construction: Available AMG forged wheels

The S63 AMG Coupe is available with optional AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while at the same time increasing strength. The lower unsprung masses result in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response.

Optional wheels include 10-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey with a polished finish – 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screwable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG logo is integrated into one of the ten spokes. These forged wheels are also available painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as an option for the first time

Short stopping distances and rapid deceleration are a given for the S63 AMG Coupe, which is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance composite brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is available as an option. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter, ensures lower unsprung masses and enhanced braking performance.

Design: AMG combines sensual purity with breaktaking performance

The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe also boasts exciting looks to emphasize its sporty performance: it exudes power and hallmark Mercedes-Benz sensual purity. The design is a stage for the exciting technology at the heart of the new dream car. Numerous aerodynamic elements underline the outstanding driving dynamics: the front end is dominated by the three-dimensional AMG “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver shadow (a matte silver finish). Whether in motion or stationary, distinctive AMG lettering between the twin-blade lamellas leaves no doubt: this is a high-performance model from Affalterbach. The A-wing is located below the radiator grille. This three-dimensional air-ducting element is painted in the body color, spans the entire width of the front apron and displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles. Large, black flics surround the outer cooling air intakes. Down below, the front splitter in silver shadow optimizes the flow of air to the cooling modules. This design feature, which is a familiar sight in motorsport, also reduces front-axle lift and enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

All of the cooling air grilles exude high quality with their high-gloss-black paint finish. Keeping the A-wing and front splitter separate makes the car appear closer to the road. A similar effect is created by the AMG side sill panels with their high-quality, three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow. Together with the lower feature line, these inserts make the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe exude energy even when it is at a standstill. Further eye-catching features of the side design include the large AMG designed wheels. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in a new, contemporary typography on the front wings is another hallmark AMG design touch.

At the rear, the diffuser insert in high-gloss black also catches the eye right away. The lower trim element in silver shadow is reminiscent of the A-wing at the front and provides an effective contrast. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system with sport flaps are perfectly integrated into the diffuser insert. Stylized, vertical air outlets in the rear apron assume the role of a defined spoiler lip and optimize aerodynamics. The “S 63 AMG” model designation in a new, contemporary typography below the tail lamps adds the perfect finishing touch to the rear-end design.

Interior: Captivating luxury, quality and exclusivity

Opening the door reveals the luxurious interior of the S63 AMG Coupe: the instrument panel almost seamlessly transitions into the doors in a wraparound design. High-quality materials and fine workmanship are combined with a sporty and exclusive design idiom. The newly developed AMG sport seats with power adjustment, memory function and seat heating/ventilation offer the driver and front passenger optimum lateral support. Fine AMG design Nappa leather with piping together with AMG badges on all four seat backrests and an embossed AMG emblem on the armrest of the front center console create an exquisite atmosphere.

The new three-spoke AMG sport steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim and perforated leather in the grip area allows perfect vehicle control. There is an AMG logo in the lower metal insert, and new aluminium shift paddles shorten the reaction time when changing gears to enhance performance. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the high-resolution TFT color AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials. In addition to the specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG start-up display, the AMG logo in the speedometer 200 mph scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

The new, innovative touchpad, included as standard equipment, makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. The safety and assistance systems are the same as those for the S550 4MATIC Coupe.

Even more exclusivity: the S63 AMG Coupe “Edition 1”

One particularly exclusive model in the range is the S63 AMG Coupe “Edition 1. The expressive arrangement of exclusive exterior and interior details arouses pure fascination. The irresistible look of the exterior is created from designo Magno Alanite Grey matte finish paint and Swarovski crystals in the LED highperformance headlamps. The exquisite ambience of the interior includes AMG sport seats upholstered in designo Exclusive Nappa Leather in bengal red/black with contrasting topstitching and piping. In keeping with this color scheme, the upper section of the dashboard, the front and rear center armrests, and the door linings are trimmed in nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, while the headliner is in finished in DINAMICA. The Edition 1 features a high level of equipment including the AMG Ceramic Braking System.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe – Interior Design

Not even the smallest detail was overlooked in the interior design of the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe

The interior design of the new S-Class Coupé is an expression of the Mercedes-Benz design idiom – sensual purity.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior

The S-Class Coupé’s dashboard fascinates with its spectacular architecture, giving rise to a vehicle of unique character in the upper coupé segment. Under the display, the sporty elevated centre console extends to the vehicle rear. All lids and armrests are lavishly covered in leather.

The new “Super Sport” steering wheel impresses with its powerful, galvanised spokes which create maximum depth for the steering wheel, as if they flowed out from the steering column.

In front of the armrest the touchpad (optional) can be found, with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior

Both the front and the rear seats have a pronounced sporty character, the two rear seats are designed as individual seats. The Exclusive package optionally includes seats in Exclusive nappa designo leather with a striking diamond backstitching pattern on backrests and seating surfaces. The front-seat seatbelts are integrated in the rear side panelling without interrupting the waistline with windows open; seatbelt extenders make them easily accessible for the seat occupants.

There is a fluid transition between the doors and the rear side panelling, emphasising the vehicle’s well-being quality. Here too, surfaces and controls are masterfully executed in top-quality materials; the configuration with the Burmester® surround sound system and Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system offers a special highlight in form and function.

New interior colors such as Bengal red, saddle brown and porcelain allow individualisation of the interior. The standard ambience lighting with several lighting moods provides the corresponding wellness character. The customer can choose from seven lighting moods.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe – Exterior

The design of the new Mercedes S-Class Coupe features a flowing profile of perfect proportions

The flowing profile of the S-Class Coupé embodies sensual purity in a modern way. It is characterised by typical rear-wheel-drive proportions, emphasised by the hallmark Mercedes dropping line. The long bonnet with pronounced lines and powerdomes, the low greenhouse with high beltline, the accentuated wheel arches as well as the large wheels (18- to 20-inch) and the broad visual effect created by the rear reinforce the S-Class Coupé’s aspirations as a masterpiece of automotive refinement. With a wheelbase of 2945 mm, the Coupé is 5027 mm long, with a width of 1899 mm and a height of 1411 mm.

S-Class Coupe Exterior

Its convex and concave modelled surfaces lend the S-Class Coupé a sensuous character.

The creative interaction of diverse design elements lends the S-Class Coupé a superior, self-confident front: in the centre of the vehicle front end is the further-evolved three-dimensional diamond radiator grille, whose structure is defined by rectangular, chrome-plated elements. It incorporates the central Mercedes three-pointed star and one louvre.

The full-LED headlamps with their iconic eyebrows as daytime running lamps lend it an extremely self-assured and distinctive gaze. On the S-Class Coupé the eyebrows have been further refined with a semi-circular counter-curve. In combination with the standard LED Intelligent Light System, unique headlamps with no less than 47 Swarovski crystals are available. 17 angular crystals form the flare-shaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Headlamps

The side profile is defined by the dome-shaped stretched roof line and the frameless doors. An elegant 3D continuous chrome frame surrounds the glass areas that are uninterrupted by B-pillars. This underscores the Mercedes-typical coupé look.

It allows the boot lid to be made especially sleek in this area. The three-pointed star is, so to say, free-standing and can thus be made more prominent for greater effect. In addition it pivots outwards in order to locate the reversing camera and the optional 360° camera in an elegantly functional manner.

The arrangement of the LEDs in two horizontal rows in the two-piece tail lamps reveals cutting-edge technology and underscores the sporty character of the vehicle rear, careful attention to detail and the car’s premium value. Form and function fuse into a perfect unity. Part of the light functions is located in the wings, the other in the boot lid. This characteristic arrangement makes the vehicle highly recognisable by night, too.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Rear

The S-Class Coupé features a panoramic roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.32 m2, it appears almost 150 percent larger than on the predecessor model.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe – Overview

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé combines classic proportions of a large, sporty coupé with modern luxury & state-of-the art technology

“As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupé marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupé virtually unaltered. The large coupé has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the “S-Class” again.”

“The world premiere of the active curve tilting function demonstrates the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive,” notes Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG with responsibility for corporate research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development. “The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’s occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers.” The new S-Class Coupé will have its world première at the Geneva International Motor Show (6 – 16 March 2014); distribution to dealerships is scheduled for the second half of 2014. The two-door car is available with a 4663 cc V8 biturbo engine. The S 500 Coupé has a nominal output of 335 kW (455 hp), its torque level peaks at 700 Nm. The sporty motoring experience is significantly enhanced by the emotional sound produced by the exhaust system.

Mercedes S500 Coupe

Mercedes S500 Coupe

MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first “suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The Coupé leans into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort.

Like the S-Class Saloon, the new Coupé is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer. The “Intelligent Drive” systems include, among other things the PRE-SAFE® brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with junction assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive High-beam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features an additional function apart from the adaptive brake assistant, which provides collision protection from a speed of 7 km/h: if there remains a danger of collision and the driver fails to respond, the system can carry out an autonomous braking manoeuvre at speeds of up to 105 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.

As in the saloon, the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been expanded through the inclusion of PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can also firmly apply the parking brake on the vehicle stationary and thus minimise the risk of whiplash injuries by reducing the forward jolt caused by an impact from the rear.

Design: sensual purity at its most beguiling

Sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury – this was the focus for the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The aim is to create clear contours and smooth surfaces that showcase high tech while radiating emotional appeal. The sensual purity is reflected in the core design values of tradition, emotion and progressivism. These make up the guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model. Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progressivism. Each model series has an assigned role and a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the design focuses. And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand.

“Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Daimler AG. “The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with pithy precision.”

2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe Spied

The 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe was spied looking better than ever

If the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is considered to be the “best car in the world” then the 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG may be the “coolest car in the world”.  It has everything you could ask for in a luxury sports car, aerodynamic design, power, unrivaled interior and technology that is more at home on a space shuttle than a car.

The S63 AMG Coupe is slated to replace the outgoing CL 63 AMG, making its debut in 2014. It’s power will come from an engine similar to the 5.5-liter V8 in the W222, which would bring it in around 595 PS and 900 Nm of torque. In terms of speed, it would mean a 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds with rear-wheel drive and 3.9 seconds with 4Matic.  Times that are going to be hard to match by any similar four-wheel drive cars.

Check out the gallery below for a 360 degree look at the future’s “coolest car in the world”
