Mercedes C-Class with S-Class Luxuries

"The most I've enjoyed driving a non-AMG Mercedes in years. It's light, bright and precise."

Whatever you think or thought about the Mercedes C-Class. And I bet it wasn’t very nice. You can unload because they’ve redone this car in a major way.  Here’s what a CNet test driver had to say on his most recent test drive of the Mercedes-Benz C400.

The C-Class used to print small and kind of affordable. Now it prints a lot of presence. And begs the question, did you just get a big raise? The front end is longer. The rear end is short and tidy and in the middle, it’s a whole lot of S class flourishes. The vehicle’s four inches longer over all. Half of that went to rear seat leg room by the way. LED headlamps up front, those are standard. A trend we’re starting to see on mid market cars as of 2014. The big panel roof up top that’s not standard but I’d spend the money. It’s big and very nice. A C400 with all wheel drive is pushing 50 delivered. We’re gonna add 2,700 for multimedia. That gives you navigation, camera, bigger screen. You want all that. HUD is nearly $1,000. We’ll check that out in a moment. The airmatic adaptive suspension brings a lot of agility to this car, for $1,200.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Nearly 3,000 for adaptive cruise. It’ll stop and go. Lane centering. Sensing for forward cross traffic alerts. That’s interesting. And active blind spot check. And a great, big, panoramic roof is 1500. all, in, we’re about 58 five.

Now in here is where you really do a double-take. This is a C class? This is kind of an S class, beautiful cabin. I love this kind of waterfall console design they’re using now, and the ergo for the way your hand hits it, really comfortable and nice. All these C’s are going to have a floating LCD up here. This is the larger one with nav. A smaller one is based. They all unfortunately have this big, thick, horsey bezel around it. If it weren’t for that, it would really appear to float in mid-air. What a shame. It’s controlled by the knob down here, we’ve seen before. But this is standard nav. A touchpad that also has a click function. You can use it for all kinds of pinch and zoom. Moving back and forth just about any natural gesture you want. Also there are at least three and sometimes five ways to do almost anything in this car. Like look at a radio station, find a station, select media, enter a destination. They got too many layers going on but you will find something you like. Please say the house number. Voice command is optional, by the way. Generally though, very good and very fast. HD Radio’s handled unusually well, surfacing all the stations at once and not making you dig. And notice the Burmester Audio, previously a mega-dollar option, is actually standard on the C400. I was surprised by that.

These are all automatic transmission cars. You have this little dainty shifter over here, in current Mercedes style. And down here you’ve got your agility control, which give you a lotta drive modes, from eco to comfort to sport to sport plus to an individual setting where you call the parameters. Very much reminiscent of Audi drive select. And, of course, you’ve got the now almost ubiquitous paddles on the wheel. The forward collision tech won’t stop the car, but partial brake. The blind spot and lane keeping tech are very much interweaved, giving you either a vibration warning, or moving the car back into the lane or out of the way of other cars, it can also sense cars that are overtaking you and predict if they’re going to be a problem. Now inside our Alabama born and bred C400 is a German engine. A three liter V six with a turbo on each side and the numbers are really good. 329 horsepower, 354 pound feet of torque. I like that kind of ratio. All the C’s have 7-speed automatics. Our 4Matic means all wheel drive. Zero to 60 in Sport Plus Mode is well under five seconds. MPG is okay, considering the performance. 21 city, 29 highway. You bet it kills them they couldn’t crack 30.

First off Let me tell you a little story about an engine, one that I’m in love with. This little V-6 is great. It’s silky, it’s liquid. The power is right there, tight when you want it. This is a great motor. The transmission is a class below it. Not a bad gear box but it’s not up to the engine in some of the fast shift modes. I find this car very tossable and handle-able, even though it’s not an AMG. It’s not in that BMW tenseness, though. It’s always a comfortable car. The head-up display is good, but not quite perfect. It gives you speed and either compass or nav. I would like to also see a drive mode. Sport, comfort, whatever. And a gear position indicator in there. That’d be really handy. The quality of the rendering is really good. But the execution is a little blurry. And the windshield seems kinda wobbly. As you move your head around, the thing changes shape. And gets distorted. That’s not good. In sum, this is the most I’ve enjoyed driving a non-AMG Mercedes in years.  It’s light, bright and precise.

Authentic driving dynamics thanks to hallmark AMG DNA

The new C 450 AMG 4MATIC is based on the most powerful production model of the C-Class, the C 400 4MATIC. The engineers have revised many technical features of the new AMG sports model. Their objective: a high level of authentic driving dynamics that uses the Mercedes-AMG C 63 for reference. To this end, a host of suspension components were adopted from the top-of-the-line V8 model. The driver also feels the DNA of the C 63 in the application of the engine and transmission management. Agility and sportiness dominate the intense driving experience in the C 450 AMG 4MATIC every mile of the way.

In terms of appearance the new C-Class adopts a progressive approach with its clear yet emotional design and its high-class interior. Many other innovations and interior touches underscore the sedan’s luxurious comfort and refined sportiness. In all, the perceived quality of the new C-Class feels like an “upgrade to a higher class of travel.”

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The C-Class is the top-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million worldwide. The new C-Class offers sensuous and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values. The U.S. market launches with two C-Class models: C300 4MATIC with a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line four-cylinder engine delivering 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and a C400 4MATIC with a 3.0L bi-turbo direct-injection V6 producing
329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. A rear-wheel drive version of the C300 will be launched in the first quarter of 2015.

“Mercedes at its best – that’s the new C-Class, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “It is characterised by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. Its efficient and high-performance engineering provides the basis for a high standard of driving enjoyment.”

Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, adds: “The new C-Class embodies Mercedes-Benz’s claim ‘The best or nothing’ in uncompromising style. This is immediately apparent when encountering our new Saloon for the first time, as it creates the impression that one is sitting in a higher class of automobile. I am sure that our customers will be delighted by the high-class appeal and agility of the new C-Class.”

The C-Class has grown to take account of people’s increasing average height. With a 3 inch increase in the wheelbase (112 inches) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 3.7 inches longer (184 inches) and 1.6 inches wider (71 inches). The additional space benefits first and foremost the rear passengers, who now travel in even greater comfort. The new C-Class also increases its trunk capacity to 17 cubic feet.

Sensuous clarity and purist forms

On a visual level, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its striking, dynamic design exudes sensuous clarity and arouses emotions. Nature was a source of inspiration for the new sedan’s aesthetically sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create
an immediate effect. The designers have created minimalist, purist forms for the C-Class which emphasize its intelligent technology and engineering. The clearly defined surfaces deliberately display a degree of tension, lending them a muscular and sensuous character. Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create lively light and shade effects.

As Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, notes: “The new C- Class showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. Progressive and emotional highlights underscore the ground-breaking design style of the new C-Class and demonstrate sensual clarity. The new C-Class interprets modern luxury on a new level.”

In the side view a long hood, a passenger compartment set well back and short overhangs define the C-Class’s classic, well-balanced Mercedes-Benz sedan proportions. Large wheels emphasize the rear and communicate a stylishly sporty character.

There is a choice of two different faces: sporty with centrally positioned star or the classic sedan radiator grille featuring the Mercedes star on the hood (part of the optional Luxury Package in the US). The fins of the radiator grille can be closed completely to optimize the vehicle’s Cd value, highlighting the status of this cultivated sedan in duly self-assured style.

The new C-Class comes with H7 halogen headlamps as standard. The characteristic night design lends the new C-Class its very own distinctive look in the dark, too. The rear lamp and brake light in the tail lights feature LED technology in all headlamp versions. LED Headlights are part of the Premium Package, also featuring full-LED taillights.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

High-class interior with fine details

The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which is rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as the precision of the finely crafted details. The interior also embodies a new design idiom which combines sensuousness and clarity perfectly with dynamic sportiness and contributes to the quality feel of the interior.

The driver and front passenger enjoy plenty of space and luxury in a discreet, modern guise on board the new C-Class. This gives rise to a feel-good atmosphere which is new to this class of vehicle – settling into your seat in the C-Class is akin to the uplifting feeling of being upgraded from economy to business class on an airplane.

The interior design demonstrates a bold new approach by Mercedes-Benz. Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of Mercedes-Benz sports cars with a totally new center console featuring flowing lines. A large one-piece center console panel performs an elegant sweep from the center air vents to the armrest. These seamless clear-cut lines create a sense of open space and convey a thrillingly purist and modern feel.

A centrally positioned free-standing central display is the main eye-catching feature across the center console – with a screen diagonal of 7 inches or 8.4 inches if Multimedia Package with the COMAND Infotainment System is selected.

Five round air vents lend the dashboard a sporty touch. With their metallic
cool-touch effect they create a fascinating, tangible contrast to the warm look of the other materials – such as the wood in the center console or the MB-TEX on the dashboard. The “upgrade” feel duly continues with the controls. All
switches feature a high-quality, three-dimensional design befitting a luxury vehicle and benefit from a clear layout.

The innovative touchpad in the handrest over the Controller on the center tunnel marks a further evolutionary step developed in-house at Mercedes-Benz. As on a smartphone, this provides for very simple and intuitive operation of all the head-unit functions using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits
letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any language. The user receives clear haptic feedback when operating the touchpad’s control surface, which is highly conducive to genuine intuitive use.

A head-up display is also new to the C-Class. Like in a jet fighter, it displays important information directly in the driver’s field of vision on the front windscreen, thus providing for clear legibility and ensuring that the driver is distracted less from the road ahead. The system provides information on vehicle speed, speed limits and navigation instructions and displays messages from DISTRONIC PLUS.

Accessories Make The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate Even More Functional

As a stylish, sporty and spacious vehicle, the new C-Class Estate is ideal for those with active, modern lifestyles

As a stylish, sporty and spacious vehicle, the new C-Class Estate is ideal for those with active, modern lifestyles, accompanying its occupants on shopping sprees, on holiday or as they head off to their sports activities, and is suitable for families in every respect. The new C-Class Estate’s dynamic looks can be underlined with the front apron spoiler lip and the roof spoiler[1]. These add-on parts are made from dimensionally stable, precisely fitted polyurethane and do not need to be entered in the vehicle documents. The primed components can be painted in the desired colour and fitted by a Mercedes-Benz partner.

Individual and sporty accents can also be added with the new, two-piece exterior mirror housings in black. The illuminated Mercedes star[2], available for vehicles with a centrally positioned star emblem, provides an unusual look at night time (with the engine switched off). Fibre-optic cables and LED lights illuminate the central star on the radiator grille when the car is locked and unlocked by remote control, and when the doors or the load compartment are opened.
The sports pedals are available in two versions, one for models with manual transmission and one for automatic models. Both feature polished stainless steel pedals with slip-resistant studded inserts. The illuminated door sill panel is a distinctive and eye-catching feature whether in daylight or at night. The lettering, illuminated in brilliant white, is set in an elegant polished stainless steel panel.

Child seats: age and height-appropriate retention systems

Children are the most vulnerable road users – and not only when travelling by scooter, bicycle or on foot. Because children who are not adequately secured as car passengers are in great danger if an accident occurs. Their risk of being seriously or fatally injured is seven times higher than for children who are protected by suitable restraint systems.

Mercedes-Benz therefore offers a selection of age-appropriate child seats, designed to provide optimum protection for youngsters. The Accessories range for the new C-Class includes the BABY-SAFE plus II infant carrier and two removable child seats, DUO plus and KIDFIX, designed for children of different heights.
The risk of incorrect use is reduced by specifying automatic front passenger airbag deactivation for the C-Class (optional extra). This version works with a weight mat integrated into the front passenger seat rather than the previous transponder. So when the child seat is removed, the front passenger airbag is automatically reactivated.

Entertainment plus: advanced multimedia solutions

With an Audio 20 CD on board, it is possible to retrofit the user-friendly Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation system. Its merits include accurate map data and excellent route guidance. The navigation software and the map data are stored on an SD card, which is simply inserted in the Audio 20 CD’s dedicated SD card slot in the centre console. Garmin® MAP PILOT uses the standard colour TFT display above the centre console, offering a high-resolution map display with a Garmin® look and feel.

The Mercedes-Benz Bluetooth® (SAP) telephone module also incorporates a host of multimedia functions. Featuring an integrated UMTS module connected directly to the vehicle’s exterior aerial, the telephone module provides COMAND Online with a fast, stable and secure internet connection. The SAP module, Version 4, can either be connected to COMAND Online via Bluetooth® or via a USB cable. Connecting via USB can result in up to seven times faster transmission speeds.

The Estate’s rear bench seat can be turned into a communication centre or a cinema with the portable iPad® Docking Station for the rear compartment. The mount is simply attached to the head restraint posts and can therefore be removed again at any time. It is suitable for all 9.7-inch iPad® models, up to iPad 4®.
Practical transport solutions: carriers for bikes, etc.
Genuine Accessories make the C-Class Estate even more invaluable when it comes to leisure activities: the rear-mounted bicycle rack for the trailer coupling, for example, holds up from two to three cycles. Its practical design means that the load compartment can still be opened when the rack is in place. The rack also conveniently folds for space-saving stowage. For those who prefer to transport their equipment on the roof of the car, the Easy-Fix basic carrier bars for roof rails can be combined with the ski and snowboard rack and the New Alustyle bicycle rack.

Mercedes-Benz has updated its range of fitness and trekking bikes for the 2014 cycling season. The exclusive Mercedes-Benz frame of the new fitness bike is available in three sizes (M 49/L 52/XL 55 cm) for male and female riders of different statures. The technical equipment includes an aluminium frame, a Suntour suspension fork with 63 mm spring travel, hydraulic disc brakes by Shimano and a 27-speed Shimano DEORE shifter as much as 28-inch Continental CrossRide wheels with Puncture ProTection.

The new trekking bike is based on the frame and technical features of the Fitness Bike, and is available with a matt black frame. The features which set it apart from the Fitness Bike include a sprung Satori saddle post, an expanded comfort saddle by Phorm, special 28-inch Continental SpeedRide trekking tyres with Puncture ProTection and a Racktime rear carrier with a load capacity of up to 25 kg. A child seat can be fitted using a separate adapter. The new Trekking Bike is available in three sizes (M 49/L 52/XL 55 cm).

The range is completed with the 16-inch kid’s and balance bikes. The kid’s bikes are available in three stylish colours (blue metallic, pink metallic and white). The saddle height is adjustable from approx. 44 to 60 cm. This makes it suitable for kids aged approx. 3 to 6 years old. The balance bikes are available in the version „Motorsport” and „Girl” and have a saddle height from approx. 32 to 36 cm.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz Bikes, accessories and textiles are available online at http://shop.mercedes-benz.de and from Mercedes-Benz partners.

Functional additions for the rear compartment: Style & Travel Equipment

The products which make up the Style & Travel Equipment range make practical use of the C-Class Estate’s rear compartment. A basic support, clamped between the posts of the front head restraints acts as a holder for further accessories. The support can be combined, for example, with a coat hanger. This can be removed separately – handy for transferring an item of clothing and its hanger to a hotel room. The folding table not only folds, but its height and angle can be adjusted too. It also features an integral drinks holder. Bag hooks can be used to hang up personal accessories such as handbags and other items weighing up to 1.5 kg.

Expressive details: wheels and accessories

The range of Genuine Accessories includes a host of light-alloy wheels. These are available in 16-inch, 17-inch, 18-inch and 19-inch sizes, making them suitable for all engine variants. Highlights include a 48.3 cm (19-inch) 6-spoke wheel with a high-sheen finish in Himalaya grey, size 7.5 J x 19 (front axle) or 8.5 x 19 (rear axle) and a high-sheen 5-spoke wheel in tremolite metallic, size: 7 J x 17.

Hub caps enhance the vehicle’s looks while protecting the hub from dirt. Various different versions are available for the new C-Class Estate to coordinate with the different wheel colours. They include hub caps with a raised or recessed star and with a star and laurel wreath and in blue, black and silver.

The Estate model also provides the stage for the world première of the Mercedes connect me services, which, among other things, make it possible to connect to the vehicle from anywhere at any time and retrieve the current fill level of the tank online.

The new C-Class Estate combines a striking, dynamic design and high-class appointments with outstanding variability and a high level of utility. With its versatility it also adapts to a wide variety of requirements. As a stylish, sporty space vehicle it accompanies active, modern people on shopping sprees, on vacation or when playing sports, and is suitable for families in every respect. Consequently, it continues the tradition of the C-Class Estates, which all in their own time combined demands on lifestyle, sportiness and practicality in an estate car, in the fourth generation on a new level.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “The new C-Class Estate is not only extremely practical thanks to its large, variable load compartment. With its state-of-the-art technical features it also strikes out in new directions in its segment with regard to safety, efficiency and comfort. And both men and women drivers enjoy noticeably more driving pleasure”.

Variable and practical

The dimensions of new C-Class Estate have grown considerably. With an 80‑millimetre increase in the wheelbase (2840 millimetres) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 96 millimetres longer (4702 millimetres) and 40 millimetres wider (1810 millimetres). The resulting increase in space primarily benefits the rear-seat passengers who now enjoy 45 millimetres more legroom. There is also more shoulder room, elbow room and headroom than in the previous model.

The moderate growth spurt also involves the load compartment. The sporty rear of the new C-Class Estate provides a maximum load capacity of 1510 litres (according to ISO 3832). It thus surpasses its predecessor by ten litres. The load compartment volume behind the rear seats increased by five litres to 490 litres.
Variability and consequently functionality also increased significantly. The rear seats now have a 40 : 20 : 40 split instead of the 60 : 40 split in the predecessor. This opens up a wide range of possibilities to use the interior as five-seater, four-seater, three-seater or two-seater.

Practical details ensure that the load compartment is even more versatile and easier to use, and as a result it can be conveniently tailored to the individual transport tasks. The rear-seat backrests can be unlocked and folded electrically at the push of a button to create a enlarged level load compartment.
The exceptional loading convenience can optionally be further enhanced with the EASY PACK power liftgate and the likewise optional HANDS-FREE ACCESS system. It allows opening and closing the liftgate without touching it. All it takes is a motion of the foot in the area of the rear bumper.

Dynamic and of high value

The new C-Class sets visual highlights with a modern, dynamic design that at the same time exudes sensuous clarity, arouses emotions and, to top it all off, stages high-tech in perfect fashion. Customers can choose from two fronts – with the sports grille or – reserved solely for the EXCLUSIVE Line – the luxury grille with the Mercedes star on the bonnet.

Unusual for a vehicle with a focus on a high level of utility and functionality is the high-value interior of the Estate, which was adopted from the Saloon. With straightforward sportiness, thrilling flowing lines and high-grade materials on the level of a luxury vehicle, it realises a modern, luxurious and at the same time sporty ambience. In addition to the base model, there are also three distinct design and equipment lines each for the exterior and interior.

The Estate also bears the quality seal of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation for a scientifically tested high level of allergy-friendliness. Mercedes-Benz is the only vehicle manufacturer to earn the ECARF seal.

Touchpad and head-up display

The touchpad in the new C-Class Estate developed by Mercedes-Benz marks an evolutionary step. As on a smartphone, all the head-unit functions can be operated using finger gestures. The 65 x 45 millimetre control surface of the touchpad is built into the handrest on the central control panel and bordered by a high-quality metal support – a design feature with a high-tech feel which exudes luxury at the same time.

A head-up display is also new feature in the C-Class Estate. As in a jet fighter, it projects important information directly into the driver’s field of vision, ensuring that there is less distraction from the road ahead. The system informs about vehicle speed, posted speed limits, navigation instructions and DISTRONIC messages.

Less weight, more comfort

Thanks to innovative solutions, the body shell of the new C-Class Estate weighs less, provides the basis for outstanding vehicle handling and best noise and vibration comfort with exceptional rigidity, and offers a high level of crash safety. With an aluminium content of 49 per cent and up to 65 kilograms less gross vehicle weight the Estate is the lightweight-construction leader in its segment.

Efficient and lively engines

The powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function comply with Euro VI emissions standards and ensure sporty performance and driving pleasure. Compared with the predecessor they in part consume in excess of 20 per cent less fuel.

The diesel models of the new C-Class are powered by the further advanced four-cylinder or the new small four-cylinder engine, which as BlueTEC models are all equipped with SCR technology (selective catalytic reduction). They cover an output range from 85 kW (115 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp).
In addition, Mercedes-Benz offers a diesel engine combined with a hybrid module. The C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID with four-cylinder diesel engine and compact electric motor generates a power output of 150 + 20 kW (204 + 27 hp) and despite its high power output runs on just 3.8 litres of diesel per 100 km/h in NEDC combined mode (equivalent to 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre).

Three BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines and one BlueDIRECT six‑cylinder petrol engine with power outputs ranging from 115 to 245 kW (156 to 333 hp) will initially be available for the new C-Class. The four-cylinder C 350 HYBRID with plug-in technology and a power output of 155 + 50 kW will follow in due course.

Agile and comfortable driving

Exemplary ride comfort coupled with outstanding dynamic vehicle handling – these are the hallmarks of the newly designed suspension of the new C-Class Estate. Thanks to a new four-link front axle it offers driving pleasure and ride comfort at the same time.
C-Class Estate customers will have a choice of two versions of the standard-specification steel suspension, which also includes a sporty set-up. As an alternative, Mercedes-Benz for the first time offers an air suspension in this segment. The AIRMATIC air suspension manages to bridge the gap between a high level of ride comfort and dynamic-agile handling. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for optimum ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded.

Choose your own driving experience

In the new C-Class Estate the driver can determine the desired driving programme at the push of a button. Depending on the equipment level, the driver can choose from various preconfigured drive programmes and one the driver can design personally to a large extent. The following characteristics are available: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The additional “Individual” option enables drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences.
Like the Saloon, the new C-Class Estate is equipped with an electric parking brake. This brake is released automatically when the driver ends parking mode with the aim of moving off.

As is customary, the new C-Class is also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Steering with a sporty character

All models of the C-Class family will in future feature the electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard. It combines road-speed dependent power assistance from the speed-sensitive power steering system, with a steering ratio that varies according to the given steering angle. The power steering assist provided by the rack-and-pinion steering gear is controlled as needed, thereby contributing towards efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: the intelligent car

It is the declared aim of Mercedes-Benz to make the highest standard of safety available to everyone. For this reason the Estate adopts almost all new assistance systems from the S- and E-Class, which have been enhanced with significant functions. The assistance systems increase both comfort and safety. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive.

The C-Class Estate is fitted as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness. It offers an adjustable sensitivity level and can provide drivers with information on their level of fatigue and the amount of driving time that has elapsed since the last break.

Also part of the standard equipment is COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. In addition to the adaptive Brake Assist system, which helps to protect against collisions at speeds above 7 km/h, this system now features an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 105 km/h (200 km/h in conjunction with DISTRONIC PLUS), thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.

New assistance systems with enhanced functions are optionally available, combining data from various sensor technologies as part of the Intelligent Drive concept to enhance comfort and safety:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS – relieves the burden on the driver in keeping a safe following distance
  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot relieves the burden on the driver in keeping a safe following distance, even in stop & go traffic. Steering Assist is new and helps the driver with lateral control of the vehicle, even in gentle bends, and offers a tailback vehicle following function.
  • BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist boosts driver braking depending on the situation, if necessary up to full brake application and, for the first time, can also react to crossing traffic and pedestrians.

Active Lane Keeping Assist warns of unintentional lane departures by means of pulsed vibrations of the steering wheel and in the presence of solid lane markings corrects the vehicle’s track with one-sided brake application. It now also intervenes with one-sided brake applications in the presence of broken lane markings if the adjacent lane is occupied by, for example, oncoming traffic, fast overtaking or overtaken vehicles.

The multitude of optionally available assistance systems also include, among others

  • Active Parking Assist, which enables automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and end-on parking spaces
  • Traffic Sign Assist with wrong-way warning function, which warns of speed limits and also alerts the driver to no-overtaking zones and no‑entry signs
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, which allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently by masking out other vehicles in the light cone of the high-beam headlamps

Airbags for safety

In addition to 3-point safety belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt-force limitation for driver, front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:

  • combined thorax/pelvis sidebags for driver and front passenger
  • an optimised windowbag
  • sidebags for the outer rear seats (optional)
  • a kneebag for the driver

The front-passenger’s seat can furthermore be equipped with an automatic child seat recognition system. This automatic front-passenger’s airbag deactivation, introduced first by Mercedes-Benz, uses a pressure sensor in the seat cushion to detect whether an infant or child seat was placed on the front-passenger’s seat and automatically deactivates the front-passenger’s airbag. Contrary to other systems that require the airbag to be deactivated with a key, this system prevents incorrect operation. As no special transponder is required, the system works with all rear-facing child restraint systems.

Climate control: signals from space

The further advanced climate control system provides improved control quality, performance, efficiency and air quality. The new Estate is the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. It uses the map data from the navigation system and the GPS location data to close the air recirculation flap automatically when the vehicle enters a tunnel, subsequently re-opening it when the vehicle emerges from the tunnel.

Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionisation and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model.

Vibrant infotainment experience

Like the Saloon, the new Estate offers a completely new multimedia generation with intuitive operation, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The Estate is furthermore also equipped with the Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic systems uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the subwoofers. The result is a listening experience almost on a par with that enjoyed in a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.

The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board airliners and Google Maps displayed on the head unit. COMAND Online is now also able to provide more accurate real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data via the internet by means of the “Live Traffic Information” service.

Internet and diverse data sources

A Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone with data option is all it takes to make even the Audio 20 system internet-capable. This enables the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary.

In conjunction with COMAND Online, Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook can be used while on the move. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources. For example, via Bluetooth®, from an Apple iPod® or iPhone®, from an SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD (with Audio 20 CD or higher and with COMAND Online).

COMAND Online with hotspot functionality

COMAND Online not only offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone® or iPad. It also enables digital TV/radio reception, for example, and offers fast hard-disc navigation, automatic tailback avoidance via up-to-date and accurate “Live Traffic Information”, an integrated WLAN hotspot functionality and the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system.

Telephony via Bluetooth® as standard

The standard Audio 20 USB system as well as Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online all offer basic telephony as standard, which links up a mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface.

Vehicle online with Mercedes connect me

Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new package of services in Europe under the name “Mercedes connect me” with the new C-Class Estate. The “Mercedes connect me” services can be used via a KOM module with its own SIM card integrated into the vehicle. The available services include accident, maintenance and breakdown management, for example. Likewise, customers can connect to their vehicle from anywhere and at any time via “Mercedes connect me“ and, among other things, retrieve the fill level of the tank or start, stop or programme the auxiliary heating system.

The C-Class is the top-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million. The new C-Class offers sensuous and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values. The U.S. market launches with two C-Class models: C300 4MATIC with a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line four- cylinder engine with preliminary power figures of 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and a C400 4MATIC with a 3.0L turbocharged direct-injection V6 at 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

Nature was a source of inspiration for the new sedan’s aesthetically sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create an immediate effect.

There is a choice of two different faces: sporty with centrally positioned star or the classic sedan radiator grille featuring the Mercedes star on the hood.

Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of Mercedes- Benz sports cars with a totally new center console featuring flowing lines. A large one-piece center console panel performs an elegant sweep from the center air vents to the armrest. These seamless clear-cut lines create a sense of open space and convey a thrillingly purist and modern feel.

A centrally positioned free-standing central display is the main eye-catching feature across the center console – with a screen diagonal of 7 inches or 8.4 inches if Multimedia Package is selected.

Five round air vents lend the dashboard a sporty touch. With their metallic cool-touch effect they create a fascinating, tangible contrast to the warm look of the other materials – such as the wood in the center console or the leather on the dashboard. The “upgrade” feel duly continues with the controls. All switches feature a high-quality, three-dimensional design befitting a luxury vehicle and benefit from a clear layout.

The innovative touchpad in the handrest over the Controller on the center tunnel marks a further evolutionary step developed in-house at Mercedes-Benz.

As on a smartphone, this provides for very simple and intuitive operation of all the head-unit functions using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any language.

Robust yet lightweight bodyshell

The body-in-white of the new C-Class provides an innovative basis for reduced weight, outstanding rigidity, including introduction rigidity for excellent handling, combined with optimum noise and vibration characteristics and a high level of crash safety. Thanks to intelligent and innovative lightweight construction, the aluminum hybrid body is around 154 lbs lighter than a conventional steel body. The vehicle’s overall weight is even reduced by around 220 lbs. As such, the new C-Class leads the “lightweight rankings” in its segment. This spawns numerous benefits: the lightweight construction of the new C-Class cuts fuel consumption by up to 20 percent without any loss of performance, while at the same time enabling a lower center of gravity, which in turn gives rise to the vehicle’s noticeably sporty and agile handling.

Mercedes-Benz achieves this feat of lightweight construction by various measures, including a completely new structural design and the use of an unusually high proportion of aluminum for a mass-produced range. The share of aluminum has risen compared with the successful predecessor from under 10 percent to almost 50 percent.

In keeping with Mercedes-Benz traditions, the body is designed for exemplary crash safety. As a result, the Sedan complies not only with all current national laws but also with all rating requirements, as well as meeting the more stringent internal Mercedes-Benz safety standards based on what actually happens during accidents.

A high-strength safety passenger compartment forms the core of this concept. It is surrounded by specifically configured and field-tested deformation zones which ensure maximum safety for the occupants by virtue of optimized force paths and a combination of aluminum castings and ultra-high-strength materials. An outer skin consisting almost completely of aluminum provides a protective shell for the body.

Leading the field in aerodynamics and quiet running

Low drag is crucial to achieving outstanding efficiency. From a speed of just under 43 mph, aerodynamic drag exceeds the sum total of all other driving resistance factors. As such, drag constitutes a major parameter in efforts to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The wind noise level, which was already very low in the preceding generation of the C-Class, has been lowered still further.

The engineers have also devoted painstaking attention to optimizing other potential sources of disturbance which may have an adverse effect on the driver’s and passengers’ well-being and concentration, even though they may not consciously notice the effects. NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is the technical term for such nuisance factors. The specialists have optimized the noise characteristics of the interior blower, the power windows, the seat adjustment functions and many other actuation and operating noises, for example. As a result, the new C-Class occupies a benchmark position in its segment.

Optimized drive train

Smooth automatic gear shifting is provided by the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which has undergone further development at Mercedes-Benz in the interests of enhanced environment-friendliness and driving pleasure.

The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive system serves to improve traction and driving stability in the C-Class, too, while additionally underscoring the vehicle’s refined sportiness.

Suspension – sporty yet comfortable

The suspension on the new C-Class is a totally new development. It provides for nimble and agile handling that makes driving a great pleasure on winding roads while also offering the highest standard of ride comfort in the segment.

A newly designed 4-link front axle plays a major part in the agile handling characteristics. Thanks to the 4-link principle, the front independent suspension is fully decoupled from the spring strut. The resultant favorable axle kinematics allow for more grip and higher lateral stability. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. An optimized multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept ensures unsurpassed wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability.

The new C-Class Sedan is fitted as standard with a steel suspension. Two suspensions with selective damping systems are available:

  • a comfortable yet sporty base suspension
  • a sports suspension lowered by .6 inches as part of the optional Sport Package

First air suspension in this category

Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tire vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use the AGILITY SELECT switch to choose between the various characteristics: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+.” The additional “Individual” option enables drivers to configure their vehicle according to their own wishes. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-leveling for optimum ride comfort even when the vehicle is loaded.

The new C-Class also comes with an electric parking brake as standard.

Steering with a sporty character

All models of the C-Class family will feature the electromechanical Direct Steer system as standard. This combines road-speed-dependent power assistance from the speed-sensitive power steering system with a steering ratio which varies according to the given steering angle. The power steering assistance provided by the rack and pinion steering gear is controlled on-demand, thereby contributing towards efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: The intelligent car

It is the declared aim of Mercedes-Benz to make the highest standard of safety available to everyone. To this end, the new C-Class incorporates almost all of the new assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions which celebrated their world premiere in the S-Class and E-Class only a few months ago. The assistance systems enhance both comfort and safety. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive.

The new C-Class offers numerous innovative safety and assistance systems. It is fitted as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness. On motorways, the COMAND system navigation function flags up nearby break options as stopovers, providing the system has been specified in the vehicle. The ATTENTION ASSIST function offers an adjustable level of sensitivity and can inform the driver in a separate view in the instrument cluster about their level of drowsiness and how long they have been driving since their last break.

In addition to Adaptive Brake Assist, which offers protection from collisions from speeds as low as 4 mph, standard-fit COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS also features an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 31 mph, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 25 mph.

New assistance systems and existing assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions from the new S-Class and E-Class are also optionally available, combining data from various sensor technologies as part of the Intelligent Drive concept to enhance comfort and safety substantially:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist is a semi-automatic traffic jam assistant which at speeds under 37 mph is able to follow the vehicle ahead even where lane markings are unclear or completely lacking, thus providing a safe and convenient means of following the flow of traffic.
  • The BAS PLUS Brake Assist System can now also detect crossing traffic and boost the braking force if the driver fails to apply the brakes sufficiently; the PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect stationary vehicles as well as pedestrians, brake automatically if the driver fails to react, thus preventing accidents up to 31 mph and mitigating the severity of collisions at speeds of up to 45 mph. In flowing traffic the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides assistance according to the same mode of operation throughout the speed range from 4 to 124 mph.
  • Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of lane when broken lane markings apply and a risk of a collision arises, e.g. as a result of vehicles overtaking at high speed, parallel traffic or even oncoming traffic, by applying the brakes on one side.

The numerous assistance systems also include

  • Active Parking Assist, which enables automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and end-on parking spaces,
  • 360° camera, which is able to show the vehicle and its surroundings from various perspectives, including a virtual bird’s eye view,

Airbags for safety

In addition to 3-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limitation for the driver, the front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:

  • Pelvis bags for driver and front passenger
  • newly developed window bag side bags for the outer rear seats
  • a knee bag for the driver

The front passenger seat is fitted as standard with automatic child seat recognition, which dispenses with the previous transponder in favor of a weight mat. This enables any child seat to be used. The airbag is automatically deactivated when a child seat is fitted and reactivated once it has been removed.

Air conditioning: signals from space

Mercedes-Benz has undertaken systematic further development and substantial improvement of the air conditioning system in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the control quality, performance, efficiency and air quality. The new C-Class is also the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. It uses the map information from the navigation system and the GPS location data to close the air recirculation flap automatically when the vehicle enters a tunnel, subsequently re-opening it when the vehicle emerges from the tunnel.

Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionization and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model.

Vibrant infotainment

A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The new C-Class is also equipped with the unique Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic systems uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers to conjure up a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.

The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board airplanes and Google Maps displayed on the head unit.

In-car technology

COMAND offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone or iPad.

The new C-Class will also include mbrace2 connected car technology, including the available option to have over twenty Mercedes-Benz Apps integrated into the COMAND system.

Mercedes-Benz Cars Keep Getting Better

Just when you thought a Mercedes couldn't get any better, they've been proven to be allergy friendly

Mercedes-Benz has been awarded the Seal of Quality from ECARF, the only car manufacturer to have this title – in simpler terms, it has been recoginized for having the cleanest interior air.  Mercedes-Benz has been awarded the Seal of Quality of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) for its passenger cars. This makes Mercedes-Benz the only vehicle manufacturer to bear this seal. The ECARF Seal of Quality is used by ECARF to designate products that have been scientifically tested and proven to be allergy-friendly. Alongside comprehensive testing for inhaled and contact allergens, Mercedes-Benz has been testing the interior emissions of all its model series for 22 years now. And a team of olfactory experts works to ensure that odours in Mercedes-Benz vehicles remain at a consistently pleasant level.

“We are delighted that the allergy-friendly nature of our Mercedes-Benz passenger cars has now been scientifically and independently recognised through the award of the ECARF Seal”, commented Dr Jörg Breuer, Director Certification, Regulatory Affairs & Environment at Daimler AG. “Indeed, the constant improvement of air quality in the interior has for many years now been a key aspect of the development of components and materials for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.”

“In our estimation, Mercedes-Benz currently represents the benchmark in terms of allergen optimisation for vehicles”, according to Professor Dr Torsten Zuberbier, Director of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), which is based at the Charité university hospital in Berlin.

The new C-Class is the latest Mercedes-Benz model to have received the ECARF Seal of Quality. The conditions of certification have been met by all model series launched in recent years, from the A-Class to the S-Class. The criteria behind the ECARF Seal are also included in the specifications book for all future Mercedes-Benz passenger car model series.

The emphasis on clean air applies for Mercedes-Benz in three particular areas: along with the avoidance of allergens, the concern is to reduce interior emissions and to keep odours at a consistently pleasant level. “We have been measuring the interior emissions of our vehicles since 1992 and have been able to make steady progress in reducing them”, according to Dr Breuer. “We have a strict internal limit these days, which has to be met by all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars – by our compact vehicles and roadsters but equally by our large estates and SUV models.”

There are currently a dozen or more experts working in the development and materials technology area on the interior air quality of new models. Over the course of the coming year, the team will also be moving into a new test centre at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre in Sindelfingen – a fact which also serves to emphasise the importance given to this topic.

Even in the early stages of the development of a vehicle, up to six years before it goes into production, the minimisation of interior emissions is a factor helping to define the materials concept. As far back as 1996, Mercedes-Benz’s own internal standards set emission levels for materials used for components in the passenger compartment and boot. Today designers and developers can make their choice from a database of around 8000 interior materials that have been approved by the specialist department.

Interior emissions: extensive testing of many components and all cars

Just before a new model goes into series production, its interior emissions are tested in a series of complex procedures. This type of analysis has been conducted by Mercedes-Benz since 1992. Component assessment involves the testing of numerous parts from each equipment variant of a model series – door panels and seats as well as the roof liner and trim. In order to ensure that a realistic impression is gained, the team do not use specially produced sample components but standard production components produced using the tools that will be subsequently used for series production. The testing procedure prescribes adherence to the VDA 276 standard as laid down by the German Motor Industry Association – the components are stored and measured in a test chamber 1 m3 in size at a defined temperature, humidity level and air circulation rate. Air samples are then extracted and used to measure the quality and quantity of gaseous substances in the air.

The examination of the vehicle as a whole involves an even more complex process. The necessary preparation of the vehicle alone, in other words the installation of the measuring equipment, takes the well-rehearsed team three quarters of an hour, while the measurements themselves last a full week. The test chamber is lined with stainless steel in order to prevent it giving off emissions of its own. Large radiant heaters are used to simulate the sun and heat up the interior of the vehicle, since for physical reasons emissions are greater under the influence of heat. The solar irradiance is measured by special devices called pyranometers.

Inside the vehicle, as many as ten sensors are used to record the temperature in various areas, for example on the top of the dashboard. A rotating paddle stirs up the air inside the vehicle to ensure an even mix. Overall emissions within the vehicle are calculated with the help of a rack-mounted flame ionisation detector. The rack projects into the vehicle interior over the opened window on the driver’s side, which has been made airtight and emission-neutral with the aid of aluminium foil.

If taking measurements according to test method FAT AK 26, for example, measuring can begin as soon as a temperature of 65 degrees Celsius has been reached at the level of the driver’s nose. Samples of air are extracted from the interior and the air flow directed into a series of test tubes. The chemical composition of the evaporated substances is then analysed in the laboratory.

“We use different sampling techniques for the various categories of substance that we analyse”, explains Hartmut Kovacs, Design for Environment, Head of Interior Emissions at Mercedes-Benz. “All in all, we take more than 100 samples from each vehicle.” As well as the overall emissions, it is therefore also possible to measure the emissions of individual organic compounds.

The emissions experts also look at a vehicle’s propensity to fogging – in other words the creation of a film of condensable substances on a car’s windscreen: the measuring rack therefore also includes a cooled sheet of glass upon which these less volatile substances, if present, are deposited.

In addition to this static test, a further series of tests are used to evaluate emission activity in the interior of the vehicle while it is in use. These tests take place with the engine running and the air-conditioning system switched on, with and without air recirculation. A further touch involves the driver’s door being opened once during each measurement cycle to simulate the driver getting into the vehicle.

ECARF Seal: extensive allergen testing

“In our estimation, Mercedes-Benz currently represents the benchmark in terms of allergen optimisation for vehicles”, according to Professor Dr Torsten Zuberbier, Director of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF), which is based at the Charité university hospital in Berlin. In industrialised countries these days, allergic conditions are now the most common form of chronic illness. In Germany, for example, around 30 percent of the population are affected. One in ten absences from work as a result of sickness is now attributable to an allergy.

But the pollen count is not the only problem to afflict motorists who suffer from allergies: emissions given off by the materials used in the interior or when contact surfaces are touched can also lead to a strong reaction, with symptoms such as swelling and inflammation of the nasal passage, hay fever or asthma.

But not in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle: numerous model series, from the A-Class to the S-Class and now also the C-Class, meet the criteria of the allergy label. The conditions involved are extensive: numerous components from each equipment variant of a vehicle have to be tested for inhaled allergens, for example. Furthermore, the function of the pollen filter must be tested in both new and used condition.

And then there are tests with human “guinea pigs”. Driving tests, for example, were conducted with people suffering from severe asthma, with lung function tests providing information about the impact on the bronchial system.

In addition, all materials that might come in contact with the skin were dermatologically tested. So-called epicutaneous skin tests were undertaken with test subjects suffering from contact allergies in order to test the tolerance levels for known contact allergens such as chrome-nickel and various pigments. This involved substances from the interior that were deemed to be potential allergens being applied with plasters to the skin for 72 hours and the reaction to them being evaluated after 48 and then 72 hours.

The air-conditioning filters also have to meet the stringent criteria of the ECARF Seal in both new and used condition: amongst other things the tests measure their retention efficiency with regard to dust and pollen.

The professional sniffers: tracking down pleasant smells

Ultimately responsible for ensuring that odour levels in Mercedes-Benz vehicles remain consistently pleasant is a team of olfactory experts. Mercedes-Benz has carried out an odour test since 1992. The olfactory experts take a sample of every single material that is to be used inside a new vehicle. They place this sample in a standard, odour-free preserving jar, which is then sealed and heated for two hours at 80 degrees Celsius. This is the temperature that can be reached inside a car if it is left in the blazing sun. And it is a fact of physics that odours become stronger under the influence of heat. The testers than allow the jars to cool down to 60 degrees, ready for the “sniffing” to begin.

Each tester lifts the lid up slightly, smells the air inside the jar and writes down a mark for the strength and quality of the smell. The final result represents the mean value of all the marks. The assessment scale corresponds to the German school grades system, i.e. from one to six. A grade-one odour is “imperceptible” (for example glass, metals, stones), while three indicates an “obvious and distinctive smell, but not unpleasant” and six is “unbearable”. Everything in the grade range from one to three passes the test. Materials that fare worse cannot be used in the vehicle. It’s then up to the supplier to make improvements. If the material passes a re-test, that test result becomes mandatory.

In order to test the odour produced by the interaction of all the various materials, the experts quite literally stick their noses into the finished vehicle before it goes into series production. Four of them jump in, close the doors and have a good sniff. The odour team also carry out an olfactometric test. For this, the interior of the vehicle – with all its doors and windows closed – is warmed up by large heaters. Using a bag, the specialists take an odour sample of the ambient air inside the closed vehicle. This bag is then attached to an olfactometer, a special device for measuring smells, and diluted with pure, odourless air before being smelt by a group of test subjects.

New C-Class: Climate control system uses signals from space

A significant factor in the excellent air quality found in the interior of the new C-Class is the further developed climate control system. The two-zone automatic climate control has separate settings for the left and right, THERMOTRONIC a further setting for the rear. However, instead of channelling the air to the rear via an air duct as is customary, it has its own blower in the centre console. This lets rear-seat passengers set their own feel-good climate.

The THERMOTRONIC three-zone automatic climate control is optionally available, the only real such system in this segment. In addition to separate controls for the driver and front passenger, it provides the option of setting the temperature and air flow in the rear compartment. It also offers a choice of three ventilation modes: Medium, Focus, Diffuse. In addition the system is equipped with a pollutant sensor that switches automatically to air recirculation mode – particularly useful, for example, when caught in a traffic tailback alongside trucks.

The new C-Class is the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. On the basis of map information from the navigation system and the GPS location data, the system detects when the vehicle enters a tunnel. It then automatically closes the air recirculation flap in order to prevent the exterior fume-filled air from entering the vehicle via the air vents. Once the vehicle has left the tunnel, the flap opens and fresh air can once again flow into the interior.

Another highlight for creating the feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, ionisation and even more efficient filtration compared with the standard model. It was adopted from the S-Class, in which the AIR-BALANCE package only recently celebrated its world premiere. The various fragrances available have been specifically developed for this purpose and, like the ionisation and filtration functions, tested by ECARF for their acceptability to allergy sufferers.

Ionisation is another component of the AIR-BALANCE package, with which the air from the air conditioning is conducted into the interior via the ioniser. The ioniser generates oxygen ions by means of high voltage. The air ionised in this way can eliminate certain viruses, bacteria and spores. At the same time the air can be freshened by an increased concentration of negatively charged oxygen ions. Both help to increase the well-being of passengers. In tests undertaken with asthmatics, under the supervision of Professor Zuberbier, the test subjects reported a clear improvement in their well-being as a result of the ionisation process.

Review of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes has added lots more equipment to lure in new buyers, so spec-for-spec, the new Mercedes C-Class model is a better value than before

The all-new Mercedes C-Class graced the testing facilities at AutoExpress recently and they went over it with a fine tooth comb. Reviewing the Mercedes-Benz C-Class for styling, driving, reliability, running cost and practicality.

Mercedes has added lots more equipment to lure in new buyers, so spec-for-spec, the new model is actually better value than before. This is especially true when you consider that Mercedes claims improvements to the engines mean it’s also up to 20 per cent more fuel-efficient.

Three engines are available at launch – two diesels and one petrol, with a further diesel and a diesel-electric hybrid joining the range in September 2014. An estate version, and a high-performance AMG model, will also be on sale before the end of 2014, while a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid, the option of 4MATIC four-wheel drive and a sleek C-Class coupe will arrive at a later date alongside a convertible.

The AutoExpress choice: Mercedes C220 BlueTEC Sport

Styling – 4 stars

The C-Class is Mercedes’ most important model – one in every five new Mercs sold worldwide is a C-Class. So that means the designers can’t be too controversial with the exterior looks. At the front, all cars sold in the UK get an SL-style two-bar grille flanked by curvy lights that look similar to those fitted to the larger S-Class. You can opt for LED headlights like the S-Class’s too.

The car’s side features muscular creases, while the rear features quite a short bootlid and LED tail-lights. SE cars get 16-inch alloys as standard, Sport models get more chrome trim, 17-inch alloys and 15mm-lower suspension, while AMG Line cars look the best thanks to their 18-inch alloys and curvier bumpers. The C-Class isn’t exactly striking, but it’s a handsome enough car, and looks less macho and aggressive than a 3 Series.

Inside, Mercedes has taken a bigger step, with a much higher-quality, better-designed cabin than the outgoing model. All cars get a seven-inch central TFT screen – upgradable to an 8.4-inch TFT screen if you spec the COMAND Online system. This displays all of the car’s infotainment functions and is controlled by a new touchpad that’s easy and intuitive to use. Also included is a well-designed multi-function steering wheel.

All cars have Artico artifical leather upholstery as standard, Sport models get Garmin sat-nav included, and top-spec AMG Line cars have more leather trim on the dash, aluminum trim on the doors and an interior lighting package. Options include a head-up display, 360-degree-view camera to aid parking and a glovebox-mounted fragrance dispenser.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Driving – 4 stars

The new C-Class is the first car to be built using Mercedes’ new rear-wheel drive architecture (MRA). This uses around 50 per cent aluminium in its construction – up from 10 per cent before – and cuts 70kg from the body. Other weight savings mean the new C-Class weighs around 100kg less than previously, which all helps improve the driving experience.

The C-Class does feel much more agile than before, thanks to the weight loss and to the fact that the car now features torque vectoring rear brakes. All cars get Agility Select, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Eco, Sport and Sport+ and Individual modes – the latter letting the driver mix and match their preferred settings from the other pre-defined modes.

All C-Class models come with a newly designed comfort suspension as standard, lowered by 15mm on Sport and AMG Line cars. However, for the first time in the segment, adaptive air suspension is a £895 option. The air springs don’t do a great deal for dynamics – unless you stick them in their firmest setting – but the extra comfort they give on a long cruise is exceptional.
The steering is accurate and direct, although a little extra response just off the straight-ahead would be welcome. However, that might be different in cars with standard steel springs.

So far, we’ve only sampled the C250 BlueTec diesel, which provides plenty of power and competitive claimed fuel economy figures. However, it’s carried over from the previous car and remains pretty gruff and noisy. The engine is marginally quieter than the previous model, but the higher quality interior, smooth ride and near-total lack of wind noise only serves to add to the impression that the engine should be better.

Likewise, the 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox is carried over, and while it’s very smooth in comfort mode, and makes quick manual shifts, it doesn’t seem to ever be in quite the right gear in Sport mode – a problem that the eight-speed auto in the BMW doesn’t have.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Reliability – 4.5 stars

Standard safety equipment on all C-Class models includes Attention Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, automatic lights, cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a reversing camera. Much of this tech already exists in other Mercedes models, so it’s all proven and should be reliable. Likewise, a number of engines and the auto gearbox are also carried over.

Further safety equipment can be added on Sport and AMG Line models fitted with auto gearboxes only. The Driving Assistance pack costs £1,495 and includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning and lane keeping assist.

The new C-Class hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP yet, but the previous car gained a five-star rating in 2009.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Practicality – 4.5 stars

At 4,686mm long and 1,810mm wide, the new C-Class is 95mm longer and 40mm wider than before. Couple this to an 80mm increase in wheelbase, which now measures 2,840mm, and the C-Class certainly has the potential to offer more cabin space.

And that’s true in part. Up front, there’s lots of room in the comfortable seats, with plenty head and legroom. The driving position is better aligned now, too, and visibility is good. There’s plenty of space in the doors and dash to store the usual on-board clutter, with all models including a media interface for connecting your smartphone to the car.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Running Costs – 4 stars

At launch, there are two diesel and one petrol engine options to choose from. The C220 Bluetec 168bhp 2.1-litre diesel is expected to be the best seller. In entry-level manual SE form, it emits 103g/km and returns over 70mpg, meaning it sits in the 16 per cent BiK bracket – great for company car drivers.

The C250 Bluetec model is much cleaner than before, and claims the same CO2 figure, but 65mpg. The only petrol model is the C200, powered by a 181bhp 2.0-litre engine that returns 53.3mpg and emits 123g/km of CO2, whether you choose manual or auto gearboxes. All engine and gearbox combinations are more competitive in terms of running costs than before, with some up to 20 per cent more efficient.

The engine range will soon expand to include the C200 Bluetec, which is powered by a new 1.6-litre diesel that comes in 114bhp or 135bhp versions. A C300 Bluetec diesel-electric hybrid will also be offered, which develops 230bhp yet returns 72.4mpg. A plug-in petrol-electric hybrid will also be offered.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class Production Begins

The first new Mercedes-Benz C-Class rolled off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant this week

Just this week, the first new C-Class  rolled off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant. The start of production marks the beginning of another chapter for Mercedes-Benz in the success story of its best-selling model series. To date, the company has delivered more than 8.5 million C-Class vehicles to its customers.

From 2014 the C-Class will, for the first time, be made to Mercedes-Benz quality standards at four sites on four continents, namely Bremen, East London (South Africa), Beijing (China) and Tuscaloosa (USA). Within just six months, production of the C-Class will have been ramped up at all these international locations. The Bremen plant is in overall control of global production of the C-Class. Total investment in the production of the new C-Class for this year and next amounts to €2 billion.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The new C-Class is setting new standards in the premium mid-range segment in a number of aspects – from design and perceived quality, driver assistance systems to lightweight construction. Just as important: We are also raising the bar in terms of production. Within just six months we will have ramped up production in four C-Class plants on four continents. With this, we are leading the way – a further milestone in our Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy.”

Daimler is investing more than €1 billion in the center of competence for the C-Class in Bremen. This investment will strengthen the position of Bremen as a production site for the future. All aspects of the production ramp-up are controlled from Bremen, from the tooling strategy and the training of colleagues at the other sites to product quality. The company is thereby ensuring that the highest quality standards are met at all production sites right from the outset.

Wilfried Porth, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Human Resources and Director of Labor Relations & Mercedes-Benz Vans: “The intensive networking between the four C-Class plants around the world is an excellent example of how experts from various regions and cultures work hand in hand at Daimler with dedication and success. Alongside their colleagues from Bremen, around 300 employees from the international also underwent intensive training in order to pass on their detailed know-how in Tuscaloosa, East London and Beijing.” All employees completed extensive skills training to prepare for the start-up. Courses took place at the pilot plant in Sindelfingen, at the training center in Bremen and on-site at the production line.

“As the center of competence for the new C-Class we play a special role in the production network. We are very proud to build the new C-Class here in Bremen and to control the global ramp-up of production from here. We have a truly excellent team here that has perfectly mastered all challenges,” says Andreas Kellermann, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant.

The main changes in terms of the body-in-white are the material mix, the innovative new manufacturing technologies and process monitoring facilities. The aluminum content of the body structure, for example, is 50 percent higher compared to its predecessor. This mix of aluminum and steel in the exterior of the car contributes to significantly improved protection against corrosion. A technology center for attaching the roof and a high-precision facility for measuring gaps are the new installations in assembly.

Energy efficiency has been a factor in the design of the production processes right from the planning stage. The amount of energy consumed per vehicle made has been cut by more than 30 per cent, in part through optimizing the building engineering and the painting technology. Ergonomics was another key aspect in the design of the production processes. Each individual work step was examined in great detail beforehand – all with the aim of optimizing working conditions for the production staff.

Uwe Werner, Chairman of the Works Council at the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant: “We’ve been making cars for 75 years in Bremen, and Mercedes-Benz cars for 35 years. I’m delighted that we are able to pass on our knowledge and expertise to our international colleagues in our role as a center of competence. We in Bremen will do all we can in terms of support and sharing of know-how to ensure that the new C-Class is produced around the world in Mercedes quality.”

Mercedes-Benz launched the 190 model in 1982. As the smallest vehicle in the product portfolio at the time, it was soon nicknamed the ‘Baby-Benz’. The C-Class designation followed in 1993, and the model range has since been expanded, with the estate and sports coupé coming on board as new variants. Launched in 2007, the fourth generation of the C-Class heralded the arrival of the ELEGANCE and AVANTGARDE equipment lines – until today with sales of more than 2.2 million sedans, estates and coupés of this model generation alone.
