Nothing’s More Beautiful Then a Benz

Mercedes-Benz C-Class and GLA-Class voted most beautiful cars in their category

In a poll to determine the cars with the best design, readers of the German motoring magazine “Auto Zeitung” have voted the Mercedes-Benz brand into top place three times: the GLA won in the SUV class, while the new C-Class was victorious among the saloons as well as being voted as champion across all classes.

The only criterion that the readers of “Auto Zeitung” needed to consider in their decision was: Which new model features the best design? Votes in the Design Trophy were cast in six vehicle categories, three of which were won by Mercedes-Benz – as also in the previous year.

The most beautiful car of them all – and thus the overall Design Champion – according to the magazine’s readers, was the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The saloon also won in its own category.

In visual terms, the Mercedes-Benz designers adopted a progressive approach to the design of the new C-Class, as evidenced by its clear yet emotional design and high-class interior.

Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG: “The new C-Class showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. This modernistic style of design is highlighted by progressive as well as emotional touches that convey a sense of sensual purity. The new C-Class interprets a new standard of modern luxury”.

The winner in the SUV category was the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Progressive in its design, it offers a convincing new interpretation of the compact SUV segment. Youthful, with flowing dynamic lines and exuding subtle excitement, the newcomer’s typical Mercedes genes allow it to offer a glimpse of the future for this category of vehicle as a means of escaping the humdrum.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG Line Photos and Details

If you want the look of a C63 AMG without the power, the C-Class AMG Line is perfect for you

It’s been nearly two weeks since we brought to you the official reveal of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and now we have new photos from Daimler on the AMG Line thanks to our friends at MBPassion.

The Mercedes C63 AMG is one of my favorite AMG vehicles, but it has a price tag that matches it’s power.  For some, the look of the C63 AMG is enough for them, and for those that want the look and not the feel, AMG has an exterior package that will introduced in the later part of 2014.

The AMG exterior package includes an AMG front bumper, apron and  mesh grille, side skirts and aluminum window surrounds as well as an updated rear bumper.  There are also several chrome inserts and a chromed lower front lip. Adding to its sleek sportiness, the C-Class AMG Line has a 15mm lowered sports suspension and rides on AMG five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels.

Additional upgrades on the AMG line is uprated perforated brakes that includes Mercedes-Benz lettering on the calipers and an updated integrated dual exhaust system.

Mercedes C-Class Interior Details

Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the C-Class interior on a level rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories

The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which is rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as the precision of the finely crafted details. The interior also embodies a new design idiom which combines sensuousness and clarity perfectly with dynamic sportiness and contributes to the quality feel of the interior.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Interior

The driver and front passenger enjoy plenty of space and luxury in a discreet, modern guise on board the new C-Class. This gives rise to a feel-good atmosphere which is new to this class of vehicle – settling into your seat in the C-Class is akin to the uplifting feeling of being upgraded from economy to business class on an airplane.

The interior design demonstrates a bold new approach by Mercedes-Benz. Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of Mercedes- Benz sports cars with a totally new center console featuring flowing lines. A large one-piece center console panel performs an elegant sweep from the center air vents to the armrest. These seamless clear-cut lines create a sense of open space and convey a thrillingly purist and modern feel.

A centrally positioned free-standing central display is the main eye-catching feature across the center console – with a screen diagonal of 7 inches or 8.4 inches if Multimedia Package is selected.

2014-mercedes-c-class-13C1152_52

Five round air vents lend the dashboard a sporty touch. With their metallic cool-touch effect they create a fascinating, tangible contrast to the warm look of the other materials – such as the wood in the center console or the leather on the dashboard. The “upgrade” feel duly continues with the controls. All switches feature a high-quality, three-dimensional design befitting a luxury vehicle and benefit from a clear layout.

The innovative touchpad in the handrest over the Controller on the center tunnel marks a further evolutionary step developed in-house at Mercedes-Benz. As on a smartphone, this provides for very simple and intuitive operation of all the head-unit functions using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any language. The user receives clear haptic feedback when operating the touchpad’s control surface, which is highly conducive to genuine intuitive use.

A head-up display is also new to the C-Class. Like in a jet fighter, it displays important information directly in the driver’s field of vision on the front windscreen, thus providing for clear legibility and ensuring that the driver is distracted less from the road ahead. The system provides information on vehicle speed, speed limits and navigation instructions and displays messages from DISTRONIC PLUS.

Airbags for safety

In addition to 3-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limitation for the driver, the front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:

  • Pelvis bags for driver and front passenger
  • a newly developed window bag
  • side bags for the outer rear seats
  • a knee bag for the driver

The front passenger seat is fitted as standard with automatic child seat recognition, which dispenses with the previous transponder in favor of a weight mat. This enables any child seat to be used. The airbag is automatically deactivated when a child seat is fitted and reactivated once it has been removed.

Air conditioning: signals from space

Mercedes-Benz has undertaken systematic further development and substantial improvement of the air conditioning system in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the control quality, performance, efficiency and air quality. The new C-Class is also the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. It uses the map information from the navigation system and the GPS location data to close the air recirculation flap automatically when the vehicle enters a tunnel, subsequently re-opening it when the vehicle emerges from the tunnel.

Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionization and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model.

Vibrant infotainment

A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The new C-Class is also equipped with the unique Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic systems uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers to conjure up a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.

The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board airplanes and Google Maps displayed on the head unit.

In-car technology

COMAND not only offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone or iPad.

The new C-Class will also include mbrace2 connected car technology, including the available option to have over twenty Mercedes-Benz Apps integrated into the COMAND system.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class: C-Class at its best

The C-Class is the biggest-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million. The new C-Class offers sensual and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values. This all adds up to substantial added value and long-term savings on motor vehicle tax and at the filling station.

“Mercedes at its best – that’s the new C-Class, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “It is characterised by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. I am sure that our customers will be delighted by the high-class appeal and agility of the new C-Class.”

The C-Class has grown to take account of people’s increasing average height. With an 80-millimetre increase in the wheelbase (2840 millimetres) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 95 millimetres longer (4686 millimetres) and 40 millimetres wider (1810 millimetres). The resultant additional space benefits first and foremost the rear passengers, who now travel in even greater comfort. The new C-Class also outstrips its predecessor in terms of boot capacity, at 480 litres (in accordance with ISO 3832).

Sensual purity and purist forms

On a visual level, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its striking, dynamic design exudes sensual purity and arouses emotions. Modern aesthetic was a source of inspiration for the new saloon’s sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create an immediate effect. The designers have created minimalist, purist forms for the C-Class which emphasise its intelligent technology and engineering. The clearly defined surfaces deliberately display a degree of tension, lending them a modern and emotional character. Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create progressive light and shade effects.

As Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, notes: “The new C-Class showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. Progressive and emotional highlights underscore the ground-breaking design style of the new C-Class and demonstrate sensual purity. The new C-Class interprets modern luxury on a new level.

In the side view a long bonnet, a passenger compartment set well back and short overhangs define the C-Class’s classic, well-balanced Mercedes-Benz saloon proportions. Large wheels emphasize the rear and communicate a stylishly sporty character.

There is a choice of two different faces: sporty with centrally positioned star or – for the EXCLUSIVE line only – the classic saloon radiator grille featuring the Mercedes star on the bonnet. The fins of the radiator grille can be closed completely to optimise the vehicle’s Cd value, highlighting the status of this cultivated saloon in duly self-assured style.

The new C-Class comes with H7 halogen headlamps as standard. In addition to the standard-fit headlamps, two energy-saving LED variants are available: a static system and a dynamic version with “LED Intelligent Light System”. The characteristic night design lends the new C-Class its very own distinctive look in the dark, too. The rear lamp and brake light in the tail lights feature LED technology in all headlamp versions.

Robust yet lightweight bodyshell

The body-in-white of the new C-Class provides an innovative basis for reduced weight, outstanding rigidity, including introduction rigidity for excellent handling, combined with optimum noise and vibration characteristics and a high level of crash safety. Thanks to intelligent and innovative lightweight construction, the aluminium hybrid body is around 70 kg lighter than a conventional steel body. The vehicle’s overall weight is even reduced by around 100 kilograms. As such, the new C-Class leads the “lightweight rankings” in its segment. This spawns numerous benefits: the lightweight construction of the new C-Class cuts fuel consumption by up to 20 percent without any loss of performance, while at the same time enabling a lower centre of gravity, which in turn gives rise to the vehicle’s noticeably sporty and agile handling.

Mercedes-Benz achieves this feat of lightweight construction by various measures, including a completely new structural design and the use of an unusually high proportion of aluminium for a mass-produced range. The share of aluminium has risen compared with the successful predecessor from under 10 percent to almost 50 percent.

In keeping with Mercedes-Benz traditions, the body is designed for exemplary crash safety. As a result, the saloon complies not only with all current national laws but also with all rating requirements, as well as meeting the more stringent internal Mercedes-Benz safety standards based on what actually happens during accidents.

A high-strength safety passenger compartment forms the core of this concept. It is surrounded by specifically configured and field-tested deformation zones which ensure maximum safety for the occupants by virtue of optimised force paths and a combination of aluminium castings and ultra-high-strength materials. An outer skin consisting almost completely of aluminium provides a protective shell for the body.

Leading the field in aerodynamics and quiet running

Low drag is crucial to achieving outstanding efficiency. From a speed of just under 70 km/h, aerodynamic drag exceeds the sum total of all other driving resistance factors. As such, drag constitutes a major parameter in efforts to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. With a Cd value of 0.24 for the C 220 BlueTEC ECO, the new C-Class Saloon sets a new benchmark in the mid-range segment. The wind noise level, which was already very low in the preceding generation of the C-Class, has been lowered still further.

The engineers have also devoted painstaking attention to optimising other potential sources of disturbance which may have an adverse effect on the driver’s and passengers’ wellbeing and concentration, even though they may not consciously notice the effects. NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is the technical term for such nuisance factors. The specialists have optimised the noise characteristics of the interior blower, the power windows, the seat adjustment functions and many other actuation and operating noises, for example. As a result, the new C-Class occupies a benchmark position in its segment.

Outstanding CO2 values with new small diesel engine

Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with the ECO start/stop function and complying with the Euro 6 emissions standard, provide for lively performance and great driving enjoyment. They also cut fuel consumption by up to 20 percent compared with the preceding model.

Three engine variants are available at the market launch – a diesel in the guise of the C 220 BlueTEC and the two petrol models, C 180 and C 200:

Model Displace-ment
cc
kW/hp Nm 0-100 km/h
in sec.
l/100 km CO2
g/km
Efficiency class
C 220 BlueTEC 2143 125/170 400 8.1 4.0 103 A+
C 180 1595 115/156 250 8.2 5.0 116 A
C 200 1991 135/184 300 7.5 5.3 123 B

Soon after the market launch, Mercedes-Benz is already set to expand the range of engines substantially. A new small diesel engine with a displacement of 1.6 litres is to be added. Reduced weight, compact design and low specific fuel consumption are among its special merits. Depending on its configuration, the single-stage supercharged four-cylinder engine generates 85 or 100 kW (115 or 136 hp) of power from a cubic capacity of 1598 cc and delivers 280 or 320 Nm of torque. Its common rail direct injection system operates at a maximum injection pressure of 1600 bar. This engine places the new C-Class in a leading position within its segment in terms of CO2 emissions.

In addition to this new small diesel engine, an advanced version of the proven 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine is also to become available in several output variants. The diesel engines will then cover an output range from 85 kW (115 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp). The C 220 BlueTEC will also be optionally available with an output of 125 kW (170 hp) as the BlueEFFICIENCY Edition. All the diesel engines of the new C-Class are equipped with the established SCR technology (selective catalytic reduction) for particularly environment-friendly driving and ensure that the C-Class models with diesel engines attain efficiency class A at least, and in most cases even efficiency class A+.

BlueDIRECT petrol engines with third-generation direct injection

Five four-cylinder petrol engines rated at 115 to 175 kW (156 to 238 hp) will also be available. These will include the special C 180 ECO Edition model, which qualifies for efficiency class A as the BlueEFFICIENCY Edition. A six-cylinder petrol engine rated at 245 kW (333 hp) will follow in due course.

The BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines of the C-Class combine spontaneous response and exemplary power delivery with high efficiency and best-in-class emission performance. To this end, Mercedes-Benz has transferred the BlueDIRECT technology from the V6 and V8 engines to the four-cylinder engine. The direct injection system with spray-guided combustion, which was introduced into series production by Mercedes-Benz as the first automotive manufacturer, employs a multiple injection process which is precision-controlled by means of an electronic system. The third-generation direct injection technology is complemented by “fast multiple ignition”.

Hybrid with four-cylinder diesel and petrol engine

As in the S and E-Class, Mercedes-Benz will additionally be offering a diesel engine combined with a hybrid module. The C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID with four-cylinder diesel engine and a compact electric motor generates an output of 150 + 20 kW (204 + 27 hp) and runs on only 3.9 litres of diesel per 100 km/h in NEDC combined mode (provisional figure). A further particularly economical hybrid model which is to follow at a later juncture will feature state-of-the-art plug-in technology.

Optimised drive train

Depending on the installed output ratings, Mercedes-Benz is offering two new 6-speed manual transmissions for the four-cylinder engines in the new C-Class which stand apart first and foremost by virtue of their enhanced ease of shifting coupled with increased shifting precision and a harmonious gear-change sequence. Smooth automatic gear shifting is provided by the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which has undergone further development at Mercedes-Benz in the interests of enhanced environment-friendliness and driving pleasure.

The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system serves to improve traction and driving stability in the C-Class, too, while additionally underscoring the vehicle’s refined sportiness.

Suspension – sporty yet comfortable

The suspension on the new C-Class is a totally new development. It provides for nimble and agile handling that makes driving a great pleasure on winding roads while also offering the highest standard of ride comfort in the segment.

A newly designed 4-link front axle plays a major part in the agile handling characteristics. Thanks to the 4-link principle, the front independent suspension is fully decoupled from the spring strut. The resultant favourable axle kinematics allow more grip and higher lateral stability. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. An optimised multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept ensures unsurpassed wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability.

The new C-Class Saloon is fitted as standard with a steel suspension. Three DIRECT CONTROL suspensions with selective damping system are available in conjunction with this suspension:

  • a comfort suspension
  • a comfortable Avantgarde suspension with a sportier character
  • a sports suspension lowered by 15 millimetres

First air suspension in this category

Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tyre vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use the AGILITY SELECT switch to choose between the various characteristics: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The additional “Individual” option enables drivers to configure their vehicle according to their own wishes. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for optimum ride comfort even when the vehicle is loaded.

The new C-Class also comes with an electric parking brake as standard. This brake is released automatically when the driver ends parking mode with the aim of moving off.

Steering with a sporty character

All models of the C-Class family will feature the electromechanical Direct Steer system as standard in future. This combines road-speed-dependent power assistance from the speed-sensitive power steering system with a steering ratio which varies according to the given steering angle. The power steering assistance provided by the rack and pinion steering gear is controlled on-demand, thereby contributing towards efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: The intelligent car

It is the declared aim of Mercedes-Benz to make the highest standard of safety available to everyone. To this end, the new C-Class incorporates almost all of the new assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions which celebrated their world premiere in the S-Class and E-Class only a few months ago. The assistance systems enhance both comfort and safety. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive.

The new C-Class offers numerous innovative safety and assistance systems. It is fitted as standard with ATTENTION ASSIST, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness. On motorways, the COMAND system navigation function flags up nearby break options as stopovers, providing the system has been specified in the vehicle. The ATTENTION ASSIST function offers an adjustable level of sensitivity and can inform the driver in a separate view in the instrument cluster about their level of drowsiness and how long they have been driving since their last break.

In addition to Adaptive Brake Assist, which offers protection from collisions from speeds as low as 7 km/h, standard-fit COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS also features an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

New assistance systems and existing assistance systems with a host of enhanced functions from the new S-Class and E-Class are also optionally available, combining data from various sensor technologies as part of the Intelligent Drive concept to enhance comfort and safety substantially:

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and integrated Stop&Go Pilot is a semi-automatic traffic jam assistant which at speeds under 60 km/h is able to follow the vehicle ahead even where lane markings are unclear or completely lacking, thus providing a safe and convenient means of following the flow of traffic.

The BAS PLUS Brake Assist System can now also detect crossing traffic and boost the braking force if the driver fails to apply the brakes sufficiently; the PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect stationary vehicles as well as pedestrians, brake automatically if the driver fails to react, thus preventing accidents up to 50 km/h and mitigating the severity of collisions at speeds of up to 72 km/h. In flowing traffic the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides assistance according to the same mode of operation throughout the speed range from 7 to 200 km/h.

Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of lane when broken lane markings apply and a risk of a collision arises, e.g. as a result of vehicles overtaking at high speed, parallel traffic or even oncoming traffic, by applying the brakes on one side.

The numerous assistance systems also include:

  • Active Parking Assist, which enables automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and end-on parking spaces,
  • a 360° camera, which is able to show the vehicle and its surroundings from various perspectives, including a virtual bird’s eye view,
  • Traffic Sign Assist with Wrong-Way Alert, which warns of speed limits and alerts the driver to no-overtaking zones and no-entry signs,
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, which allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently without dazzling traffic by masking out other vehicles in the cone of light from the high-beam headlamps.
  • Airbags for safety

In addition to 3-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limitation for the driver, the front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:

  • pelvisbags for driver and front passenger
  • a newly developed windowbag
  • sidebags for the outer rear seats
  • a kneebag for the driver

The front passenger seat can additionally be fitted with automatic child seat recognition, which dispenses with the previous transponder in favour of a weight mat.

Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionisation and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model.

Vibrant infotainment

A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The new C-Class is also equipped with the unique Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic system uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the bass speakers to conjure up a listening experience almost on a par with a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available.

The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a “Drive Show” with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board aeroplanes and Google Maps displayed on the head unit. The navigation system is also able to provide more accurate real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data via internet by means of the “Live Traffic Information” service.

Internet and diverse data sources already available in the basic version

A Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with data option is all it takes to make theAudio 20 system internet-capable. This enables the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. While on the move, Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, Destination/Route Download and Facebook can be used.

Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, e.g. via Bluetooth®, from the Apple iPod® and iPhone®, from SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD (with Audio 20 CD or higher and with COMAND Online).

COMAND Online with hotspot functionality

COMAND Online not only offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone® or iPad. It also enables digital TV / radio reception, for example, and offers a host of other features including fast hard-disc navigation, automatic tailback avoidance via up-to-date and accurate “Live Traffic Information” traffic data, integrated WLAN hotspot functionality and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system.

  • Telephony via Bluetooth® as standard

The basic Audio 20 system as well as Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online all offer basic telephony as standard, which links up a mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface.

Next-Generation Mercedes C-Class Undisguised

Spy photos of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class show the sedan completely uncovered

We’ve seen the upcoming Mercedes-Benz C-Class in various stages of undress the last couple of months as well as getting an official look inside.  And finally, we have the first photos that show the next-gen Mercedes C-Class completely undisguised.  Thanks to our good friends across the pond at GMotors, we have photos of the C-Class during a commercial photo shoot sporting an AMG styling package and looking quite a bit like it’s larger more luxurious big brother, the 2014 S-Class.

The newly revised C-Class sedan will likely debut this January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, followed up by a C-Class Estate and then a Coupe and Cabriolet. Not forgotten is one of our reader’s favorite AMG models that will produce around 450bhp from a twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 is also already in development.

Mercedes C-Class Spied With Minimal Camo

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class test with minimal camouflage showing S-Class inspired styling

We’ve been seeing spy photos of the next generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class for months, and today, we have the clearest photos yet of the new C-Class dressed in minimal camo.

The newly designed C-Class will likely debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January and will show off its fuller and more luxurious body.  The larger, corporate styled C-Class will have a more upright front grille with sweeping headlights and taillights inspired by the 2014 S-Class.  The larger body and more luxurious features will help to seperate the once entry level Mercedes from the newly released Mercedes CLA.

Check out the photos below for a glimpse at what you can expect from the newly designed C-Class.  And if you want to compare it to the current model, check out the current C-Class photo gallery here.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sales Reach Over 10 Million

Since its launch in 1982, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 10 million C-Class models

Since its market launch in 1982, Mercedes-Benz has supplied customers with over 10 million cars of the C-Class family. The brand has sold more than 2.3 million sedans, estates and coupes of the current model series alone since it was unveiled in 2007.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a global success story. Sales of over 10 million C-Class cars speak for themselves. Launched as the ‘Baby Benz’, it is now one of the most popular cars in the premium segment. The innovative engineering and impressive efficiency of the C-Class have been inspiring our customers for more than 30 years.”

C-Class sedans sell extremely well in the US, South Africa and the BRIC countries, while there is particular demand for the estate among customers in Europe. The C-Class coupe tops the registration lists in virtually all markets, including those in the US, Germany and China. The C-Class is also one of the most popular models among business customers. The C-Class estate – which already accounts for nearly a milion sales – was voted 2011 company car of the year in Germany. Most business customers choose the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI Estate for its excellent fuel economy figures.

Outstanding efficiency

Customers who buy a C-Class are particularly impressed by its outstanding efficiency. The C 220 CDI is the most popular engine and the BlueEFFICIENCY edition scores highly for being particularly environmentally friendly. The sedan and coupe models consume just 4.1 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres – equivalent to CO ₂ emissions of 109 grams per kilometre. The C-Class has always been regarded as a pioneer in its segment in terms of its innovative safety systems which include numerous driving assistance systems ranging from ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection to DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control. Together, these provide a comprehensive level of support and protection for driver and passengers.

Expanding the global production network

The C-Class model series are not only in demand throughout the world – from 2014 they will also be the only Mercedes-Benz vehicles to be produced on four continents, being made at plants in Bremen (Germany), East London (South Africa), Beijing (China) and Tuscaloosa (USA). The Mercedes-Benz plant Bremen is also the centre of excellence for the new C-Class generation and it controls the global ramp-up. Well over a million C-Class cars in the current model series alone have already rolled off the production line in Bremen.

Global success story for over 30 years

The C-Class success story began in 1982 when the Mercedes-Benz 190 was launched as a mid-range car. Because it was the smallest car in the Mercedes-Benz range at the time, it soon earned the nickname ‘Baby Benz’. The first car under the C-Class designation was introduced in May 1993 and it marked new ground for Mercedes-Benz, not only in terms of engineering but also because of the wider range of body shapes. The estate introduced by the company in 1996 was the first sporty, mid-range estate car. When Mercedes-Benz launched the next C-Class model series in 2000, it included the sports coupe, a completely new body variant. The entry of the fourth C-Class generation to the market in 2007 also saw the launch of a new design feature. For the first time, the front-end design of a Mercedes-Benz sedan varied according to the equipment line. While the ELEGANCE equipment line features the three-pointed star in its traditional position on the bonnet, it is built into the centre of the radiator grill for the more sporty AVANTGARDE equipment line.

Edition C and Grand Edition – best sellers at the top of their game

Customers in Germany can look forward to a special offer in the summer when the Edition C option package for sedans, estates and coupes comes onto the market. It includes a wide range of optional extras, high-quality materials in the interior and AMG styling for a dynamic look. Mercedes-Benz has also enhanced the telematics and multimedia centre of this special C-Class model, with features such as an 11.4cm multifunctional colour display in the instrument cluster. The C-Class Edition C package for coupes, sedans and estates is available from €1,785.00 incl. VAT, while the extra cost for a saloon or estate with the AVANTGARDE equipment line is €1,011.50, incl. VAT.

The latest AMG version of the C-Class will appeal to those looking for sports performance. Exclusive, Edition 507 sedans, estates and coupes are fitted with an uprated 6.3-litre, V8 AMG engine with 373 kW (507 bhp) output and 610 Nm of torque. The Edition 507 models are available with the AMG Driver’s Package as standard, which means they have a top speed of 280 km/h. The C 63 AMG Edition 507 was launched in Europe in June and it will be introduced in all major markets in stages.

Mercedes-Benz is also offering its Chinese customers a special version of the C-Class. The special Grand Edition model with sporty AMG styling and particular market-specific colour combinations comes onto the Chinese market in late August.

Is This What the 2014 C-Class Will Look Like

Based on past spy photos, SRK has created an amazing rendering of what the 2014 Mercedes C-Class could look like

The next generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class is scheduled for its world premier sometime next year but that hasn’t stopped spy photographers form doing everything they can to catch a glimpse of the next-gen model ahead of that reveal. We’ve been bringing you spy photos for months, and now, based on those photos, SRK from Indian Autos Blog has translated those photos into an amazing rendering.

We’ve included the new rendering as well as past spy photos in the gallery below.

New C-Class engines and specs

From the new C-Class lineup, we can expect to see a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, a four-cylinder engine developed and built by Nissan and the first engine built in the U.S. to be used in a mainstream Mercedes as well as a  plug-in hybrid model in order for Mercedes to take on the Lexus IS 300h.

Watch for big updates to the safety tech on-board, borrowing systems from the current E-Class,  including cameras that can detect traffic and quite possibly the ability to steer itself in traffic jams.

One of the most important changes to the new C-Class would be the new Mercedes Rear Wheel drive Architecture (MRA) platform underpinning it. The new C-Class is expected to drive and handle better than the outgoing model thanks to the improvements in weight and performance.

New C-Class Cabriolet

There have also been spy photos that show Mercedes is working on a C-Class Cabriolet, a replacement for the CLK. The C-Class convertible isn’t expected to go on sale until 2015, a year after the four-door saloon arrives.

According to sources, the A-Class cabriolet that was originally on the docket  is no longer part of Mercedes’ new product plan.  This means the C-Class Convertible, although a bit larger, will rival the Audi A3 Cabriolet and the new BMW 2 Series Convertible – both of which will be on the market 2014.

Mercedes C63 AMG

It’s still unclear if the new C63 AMG will feature a 5.5-liter mill or a new 4.0-liter unit from AMG.  We do know however that no matter which engine Mercedes goes with, there will be vicious competition between the AMG, the new BMW M3 that is due out in 2014.

All-New Mercedes-Benz C-Class Spy Photos and Rumors

The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is dominated by a wide grille with exceptionally large Mercedes star

The future Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been spied once again, this time undergoing winter testing in the Arctic Circle. Taking several styling cues from the soon to be unveiled S-Class and A-Class, the all-new C-Class is dominated by a wide grille with exceptionally large Mercedes star. On each side of the Mercedes emblem are oversized headlights with LED technology that gives the new C-Class a far more aggressive look.

The rear of the new C-Class has received a more sculpted look with C-pillars that are thicker while the twin exhausts are slender and more neatly integrated into the rear bumper.

The all-new C-Class will be unveiled early next year ahead of its likely release date in summer 2014.

Continue on to see what information Auto Express was able to find out about the new C-Class or skip straight to the photo gallery to see a compilation of C-Class spy photos.

New C-Class engines and specs

Expect a range of ultra-efficient petrol and diesel engines including a four-cylinder engine developed and built by Nissan – the first engine built in the U.S. to be used in a mainstream Mercedes – while a plug-in hybrid model is also planned to help take on the new Lexus IS 300h.

Mercedes will build the car on a new modular architecture called MRA, that will allow the firm to offer its 4MATIC four-wheel drive system on right-hand drive cars for the first time, to compete with Quattro-equipped Audis and xDrive BMWs.

Expect to see big updates to the amount of safety tech onboard, too, with the new C-Class borrowing systems from the current E-Class. This includes cameras that can detect traffic at junctions, and the ability to steer itself in traffic jams.

New C-Class Cabriolet

The spy shots also prove Mercedes is working on a C-Class Cabriolet. Effectively a replacement for the CLK, the C-Class convertible is expected to go on sale in 2015 – a year after the new saloon is scheduled to arrive in UK showrooms.

Despite heavy camouflage, the cabriolet’s sleek profile can clearly be seen, although it’s impossible to tell at this stage whether Mercedes is planning to use a fabric roof, or a folding hardtop. Judging by the compact rear end, though, a fabric roof – that’s both lighter and cheaper to produce than a metal one – seems most likely.

According to inside sources, an A-Class cabriolet is no longer part of Mercedes’ product plan, so this car, although slightly larger, will rival the Audi A3 Cabriolet (which is based on the A3 Saloon) and the new BMW 2 Series Convertible – both due in 2014. It’s also likely to start from under £30,000, making it the most affordable convertible in the Mercedes range.

A C-Class Coupe is also expected in 2015.

Mercedes C63 AMG

Photographers have also spotted the new C63 AMG testing ahead of its 2014 release date. The images in our gallery show it sporting bigger, chunkier bumpers, large alloy wheels and twin exhaust housings at the rear.

Unlike the present car, with its 6.3-litre V8, the new C63 will be powered by a more efficient 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8. It is expected to have the same 518bhp output as the E63 and CLS 63, which also use the newer turbocharged engine. That’s a jump of 67bhp.

It will also have the same AMG-tuned seven-speed MCT automatic transmission, which along with retuned adaptive suspension, stronger brakes and less weight should help it improve on the current C63 AMG’s 4.5-second 0-62mph time, while using less fuel.

Meanwhile, a four-wheel drive C63 AMG is considered. AMG’s senior powertrain engineering manager, Dr Jorg Gindele said: “Yes, a C63 is possible. There is one car already [a prototype at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany]. I know this because it’s my car!”

A new six-cylinder BMW M3 will make its debut in 2014, and the competition between the two is expected to be fierce. The C63 AMG will cost £56,000 when it arrives in showrooms.

Next Generation C-Class Sedan Confirmed for 2014 Detroit Auto Show

It's confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January

It has been confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan, U.S. built, will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January before going on sale in August 2014.

In 2015, the updated C-class sedan will be followed up by a redesigned coupe, the C-Class convertible is also scheduled to go on sale in 2015. The sedan, coupe and cabriolet will then be followed by diesel and hybrid models as well as an all-wheel drive option. Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon did not confirm when the diesel and hybrid models will arrive, but a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz said the hybrid will be debuting in 2015 as well.

Cannon confirmed to Automotive News that, because of low anticipated demand, the redesigned C-class station wagon will not be sold in the United States.

Also commented on by Cannon was that the redesigned C-class exterior will be changed significantly, based on the spy photos, it will have far crisper and sharper lines.

As for Mercedes-Benz adding crossover variants to the C-Class lineup, it’s not likely. Cannon stated that vehicles like the BMW 3-series GT is “an answer to product question that no one is asking for.”

The Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mercedes-Benz plant is currently being expanded in order to make room for production of the C-Class sedan for North America starting next year with a output of around 100,000 units annually.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Spy Photos – Update

Mercedes-Benz is working on a convertible version of the next-generation C-Class, this confirmed by the latest spy photos

Mercedes-Benz is working on a convertible version of the next-generation C-Class, this confirmed by the latest spy photos that made their way onto the web this morning. Look for the 2014 C-Class cabriolet to go on sale in 2015.

Even with heavy camouflage, we are able to clearly see the cabriolet’s sleek profile.  With it’s small rear end and the minimization of weight and cost, we are speculating that the C-Class Cabriolet will come with a fabric top though it is too hard to tell based on the photos.

According to Auto Express sources, an A-Class cabriolet is no longer part of Mercedes’ product lineup, so the C-Class Convertible, though a bit larger, will be the Mercedes rival the Audi A3 Cabriolet and the new BMW 2 Series Convertible.  As always, we will keep you posted as new information and photos become available.  Via: AutoExpress.co.uk

UPDATE: The latest photos come courtesy of our friends at GMotors and show the all new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet entering a Mercedes factory in South Germany. The prototype has side mirrors on the door instead of on the A-pillar like we see on the saloon.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Special Edition C Model

Mercedes is unveiling a sporty & stylish C‑Class Saloon, Estate & Coupé with the Limited Mercedes Edition C Model

Mercedes‑Benz is unveiling a particularly sporty and stylish take on its C‑Class Saloon, Estate and Coupé models with the Limited Mercedes Edition C. They stand out by virtue of their extensive equipment, an interior designed with great attention to detail using high-quality materials and a dynamic appearance. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz is augmenting the C-Class range by introducing a new model and a series of modifications, particularly in the areas of multimedia and telematics.

An exclusive radiator grille with high-gloss black louvres and chrome trim flanked by darkened headlamps clearly underlines the special status and individual character of the Edition C models. Over and above this, the Edition C Coupé features AMG bodystyling for the front apron, side sill panels and rear apron. As do the Saloon and Estate models if the AVANTGARDE design and equipment line is selected. Further stand-out features of the Edition C include chromed tailpipe trims and an “Edition C” badge on the wing.

The Saloon and Estate are shod with 43.2 cm (17-inch) five-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in black with a high-sheen finish, paired with 225/45 R 17 front and rear tires. The Coupé model as well as Saloon and Estate models ordered with the AVANTGARDE design and equipment line have wider 245/40 R 17 tires on the rear wheels.

Interior: sporty and supremely stylish

Attractive materials, stylish details and a wealth of high-quality equipment and appointments enhance the individuality and sporty character of the interior. Eye-catching features include the sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/ DINAMICA microfibre in black (AMG sports seats in the Coupé) with two-tone contrasting topstitching in blue/alpaca grey and a dark aluminium trim with longitudinal grain.

Facing the driver is a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather with contrasting topstitching in alpaca grey and an 11.4 cm multifunction colour display in the instrument cluster, including ATTENTION ASSIST. The shift/selector lever gaiter and the DINAMICA microfibre-trimmed door centre panels likewise feature contrasting topstitching in alpaca grey and make for a perfectly coordinated, sporty look. As do the velour floor mats, with edging and contrasting topstitching in alpaca grey, and the black headlining. Folding rear seat backrests underline the car’s impressive practicality.

The C-Class Edition C equipment and appointments add €1785 (including VAT) to the price of the Coupé, Saloon and Estate models, while Saloon and Estate models already featuring the AVANTGARDE design and equipment line carry an additional charge of €1011.50 (incl. VAT) for the Edition C package.

Enhanced C-Class: bestseller in best form

There is a new addition to the C-Class range in the shape of the C 220 CDI 4MATIC entry-level all-wheel-drive model, which has an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. It is available in either Saloon or Estate guise.

Enhanced features include the COMAND Online multimedia system with Live Traffic Information, which delivers traffic data in real time and can therefore provide advance warnings of traffic hold-ups. In addition to this, the standard-fit Audio 20 CD radio incorporates a digital bus, meaning that a Media Interface, a digital radio (DAB) and the high-end Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system are also combinable with the standard radio.

A new control logic for the optionally available Dynamic Handling package offers separate setting options for the suspension (SPORT button) and powertrain (E/S button), allowing the driver more scope for influencing the comfort-oriented or sporty settings.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Caught on Camera

Latest spy photos of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class show an evolutionary design that perfectly blends in new features

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, due our toward the end of the year possibly at the Frankfurt motor show in September, was spied once again.

While the next-generation C-Class, W205, will maintain its overall shape carried over from the W204, it will likely feature a new set of wider wrap-around headlights and taillights that take design cues from the CLA. The front grille appears to be more oval shaped, while the overall look of the car will be sportier than current C-Class, W204.

The upcoming C-Class will ride on the MRA platform and will weigh in around 3,042 lbs curb weight.  Even with its minor weight loss, the 2014 Mercedes C-Class will likely measure about 100mm longer, with 80mm of the added length for the wheelbase.

We also expect major updates to the safety technology on board the C-Class, taking cues from the current E-Class and adding additional cameras and self steering to its safety mix.

The 4-cylinder and V6 engines will offer up outputs that vary between 184 hp (137 kW) to 330 hp (246 kW). A 2014 C-Class gasoline-electric hybrid model with a 27 hp (20 kW) electric motor is also in the works with a launch date that could be as early as 2015.  Not to be left out is the range-topping AMG variant that will receive a V8 4.0 or 5.5-liter engine.

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Spied Testing with Minimal Camo

The C-Class prototype was spied wearing minimal camouflage and appearing to be heavily influenced by the upcoming S-Class

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been spied once again, this time on the roads of South Germany. The C-Class prototype was wearing less camouflage then ever making it appear heavily influenced by the upcoming S-Class, specifically in the rear.  If you look closely at the front, you can see what looks to be CLS inspired headlights, but along with the grille look like they’ve been lowered compared to the current C-Class model.

The C-Class Engine line-up will include a wide range of petrol and diesel units, as well as a new hybrid and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Expect to see the C-Class make its debut in late 2013 as a saloon first, followed by an estate, coupe and a convertible.

Thanks to Andrus for the tip via GMotors.
