The Iconic G-Class Design Will Live On

"It's not a vehicle that pretends. The G-Class is the original" - Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche

Mercedes-Benz’s G class is about as sleek as a snow plow, costs more than twice the average U.S. household income and hasn’t had a redesign since its introduction in 1979 — and sales are higher than ever.

Deliveries of the box-shaped car tripled in the past five years to 12,000 vehicles in 2013. The top-of-the-range G 65 with a V-12 engine is the most expensive model in the entire Mercedes lineup.

As the Daimler AG unit restyles the rest of its luxury SUVs, executives say the G class’s angular form will stay the same.

“It has to continue as it looks today,” Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said last month. “It’s not a vehicle that pretends. The G-Class is the original.”

Derived from a military vehicle, the $115,400 off-roader is a lesson in how ignoring trends can pay dividends.

After the planned demise next year of the Land Rover Defender, the G class will be among the last old-school SUVs in production, drawing buyers because it literally stands out in a sea of streamlined cars.

By combining a rugged exterior with interior luxury that includes a dashboard screen the size of a tablet and heated leather seats, Mercedes has made Beverly Hills or the French Riviera the natural habitat of the G class rather than the forest-coated Alpine countryside where it’s made.

Among its drivers are the Kardashians, the reality-TV clan who boast a whole stable of G classes, including at least one in matte.

Rising sales

The future of the G class is playing out against a backdrop of change at Mercedes.

The company is fighting a stodgy reputation as it tries to regain its former position atop the luxury-car market — lost in 2005 to BMW AG.

Zetsche has said he’ll do that in part by making Mercedes vehicles sleeker and sportier.

The brand’s SUVs are key to that. Sales in the segment rose 12 percent to 324,700 vehicles last year. Mercedes expanded the lineup with a new compact SUV this year, and a sixth model, a coupe version of the M class, is coming in 2015.

The G class is the first off-road vehicle the company made and the most expensive of the lot. The U.S. is its biggest market, with about one-fifth of sales, and more than half the vehicles sold globally are equipped with high-performance engines that bring their base price to $137,150.

Backwoods abilities

The G class will soon face more competition at the top of the market. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Maserati will start selling its Levante SUV next year, while Bentley, the British manufacturer of ultra-luxury cars favored by Queen Elizabeth II, has said it will roll out the world’s priciest SUV at about $240,000 in 2016.

Officials at BMW’s Rolls-Royce said at this month’s Paris Motor Show they are also weighing an SUV.

Still, Mercedes expects G class sales will continue to grow, said Gunnar Guethenke, the model line’s chief. The company says it doesn’t consider Maserati and others to be competitors because of the car’s proven backwoods abilities.

“When it comes to the combination of off-road capabilities and luxury, there’s no alternative,” Guethenke said in an interview in his office in Graz, Austria. “The G class provides the genes for all Mercedes-Benz SUVs.”

Though the majority of G class customers never venture off the pavement, Mercedes expends a great deal of effort to make sure they could. The vehicle is subject to continuous testing on the 4,600-foot-high Schoeckl mountain on the southern edge of the Alps.

‘Goes anywhere’

During a test drive there, the vehicle climbed up slippery rocks you couldn’t master on foot, the right front wheel hanging in midair while the rear left wheel barely touched the ground.

It ascended tracks with a more than 45-degree gradient and plowed through 2-foot-deep puddles with ease. The old-fashioned truck-style construction — which fixes the body to a separate frame instead of combining the two as a modern passenger car would — gives the vehicle extra stability.

“G stands for ‘goes anywhere,'” said Mario Summer, a test driver familiar with the tricks of the nearly 2-mile Schoeckl course, which include shutting off the G class’s parking aid sensors while driving through bushes.

Production of the vehicle, which takes place about a 30-minute drive south of Schoeckl in Graz, has retained the idiosyncrasies of the car itself.

People, not robots, fuse the 4,000 welding points and the 16 feet of weld seam that hold the body together. In another hall, more than a dozen seamstresses stitch together the leather seats.

Some tweaks

Magna Steyr, a subsidiary of Aurora, Canada-based Magna International Inc., has always assembled the vehicle for Mercedes and has a contract to produce the G-Class at least until 2022.

Despite Zetsche’s promise to keep the G-Class looking the same, it will need some tweaks to meet tighter EU regulations on pedestrian safety and emissions coming in 2016.

Also being considered are improving the vehicle’s stability and interior space by widening the body as much as 10 centimeters and lowering the roof slightly, according to a person familiar with the plans, who asked not to be identified because decisions are not final.

Regulatory changes helped contribute to Jaguar Land Rover’s decision to pull the Defender after 67 years of production.

Even as global SUV sales are expected to grow at a faster pace than the total car market, the market share of “hard-core” off-road vehicles will dwindle within the SUV segment from 5 percent this year to 4.1 percent by 2020, according to IHS Automotive.

That encompasses the less plush vehicles such as Mitsubishi Motors Corp.’s Pajero, a record 11-time winner of the Paris-Dakar Rally. It used to include General Motors’ Hummer brand, until the massive SUV fell out of favor with consumers and was wiped out amid GM’s struggles to emerge from bankruptcy.

Fuel-gulping

None of these boxy, fuel-gulping cars make sense purely as transport in a world of tightening emissions regulations, said Anja Smetanin, a spokeswoman for VCD, an environmentally friendly transport club in Berlin.

“We don’t need them if we want to get from A to B,” Smetanin said.

Still, Mercedes is building ever more exotic variants of the G class, including a 6×6 three-axle model with a pick-up load area behind a cabin that houses four electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated individual seats.

Other changes would repel fans.

“They shouldn’t change anything on any account, otherwise the legend would get lost immediately,” said Roland Kempf, who belongs to a Mercedes off-roader club in Stuttgart, Germany, and owns two G class vehicles. “Nobody needs such a vehicle, and it’s a legend nonetheless.”

Mercedes Geländewagen Makeover Coming in 2016

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class will receive a major facelift for 2016 that will ensure the SUV stays on the market until 2027

In 1979, Mercedes-Benz and its partner Steyr-Daimler-Puch launched the now indestructible, go anywhere Geländewagen, better known as the G-Wagen.  The SUV that was originally seen only off-road in camo colors quickly became a car of choice for the rich for on and off-road expeditions.  Because of its iconic status, Mercedes has committed to continuing production of the G-Class for at least the next decade.  And while the G-Wagen will maintain its boxy stature throughout this time, it is set for a makeover in 2016.

2016 Mercedes G-Class Makeover Details

New passive safety legislations and stricter emission norms keep calling for increasingly frequent engineering updates, but by 2016 when even tighter rules will be enforced, only a thorough makeover can save the golden oldie. Although this update entails a substantial investment worth several hundred million euros, Daimler will comply – after all, the G-Wagen is in its 35th year and they’re not about to give up on it now.

While the 461-series aimed at military clients will soldier on almost unchanged, the 463-series aimed at private individuals is to undergo a number of significant changes. For a start, the body will be widened by 100mm from 1760 to 1860mm which is admittedly still slim when compared to the 1980mm Range Rover.

The slab-sided flanks are bound to survive, but the roof can come down a bit to comply with standard-size garages, and although the trademark front-end graphics must be carried over, minor drag-cutting modifications are perfectly okay.

Details that give away the revised model include the Distronic Plus radar eye hidden behind the three-pointed star, the adaptive extra-cost LED headlamps, a set of selectively blocked-off air intakes and the miniature cameras which feed the latest generation assistance systems.

It is at this point not quite clear whether the short-wheelbase G-wagen convertible will also be granted a new lease of life.

Engines in the new 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-class

The new G-class may lose the optional V12 engine, but it will gain two new in-line six-cylinder engines and show-off types can pick a V8, naturally:

3.0-litre petrol straight six 367bhp and 354lb ft
2.9-litre diesel straight six 313bhp and 354lb ft
4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 462bhp and 442lb ft
5.5-litre V8 G63 AMG 571bhp and 590lb ft

The 463-series Mercedes G-wagen: the interior

The greater width of the next G-wagen requires a new dashboard. Instead of simply adding a piece of plastic here and three, Mercedes will redesign the entire instrument panel which is to incorporates such classic touches as a high-mounted passenger grab handle, the prominent diff lock push-buttons and two large round dials.

Contemporary modifications are said to include the latest-generation Comand system complete with touchpad, a larger in-dash monitor complemented by a head-up display, rearranged centre stack ergonomics and a new steering wheel. Think classic G-wagen looks mixed with modern creature comforts.

The handbrake is again of the lever-operated kind, the joystick retains its place on the transmission tunnel, the more comfortable seats are still mounted relatively close to the doors. The frame to which the body is attached will in future be made of aluminium, not steel. This saves a whopping 375 kilos over the 461 series, and there are even more calories to be shed by replacing the front live axle with a brand-new independent suspension.

Apparently you can still lock all three diffs: the one up front via brake actuation, the other two via a hydraulic clutch mechanism. Also new is the electrically assisted power steering, a must in combination with all those lane keeping, parking aid and accident avoidance wizardries.

Mercedes G63 AMG Six-Wheeler Combines Off-Road Tech and AMG Power

The world of the Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 off-road begins where anything vehicle without caterpillar tracks would have to quit

UPDATE: Mercedes announced pricing for the 2014 Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6, and it seems that those extra wheels come with an extra large price tag.  The G 63 AMG 6×6 can be yours at a starting price of 451,010 EUR (VAT included) in Germany.

A look at the key data of the G 63 AMG 6×6 makes it clear that this model’s off-road world begins at a point where anything less than a vehicle with caterpillar tracks would have to capitulate. Six driven wheels, an off-road low-range ratio in the transfer case, portal axles and five differential locks which can be engaged on the move are features which one seeks in vain in conventional off-road vehicles. Together, they ensure that the G 63 AMG 6×6 has driving dynamics which are more than a match for the toughest terrain. As a result, the show vehicle is able to storm up the highest sand dunes with ease while sand tracks hold no fears thanks to its unshakable directional stability. Rocky terrain is negotiated with all the agility of a mountain goat; fording a river becomes almost child’s play thanks to the impressive fording capability. And anyone exploring the on-road performance is certain to be impressed by the catapult-like acceleration of this 3.85-tonne pickup.

Despite its unique drive technology, the show vehicle does not actually represent a new development in terms of technology. After 34 years of G-Class production, there is such a large array of “G” parts to draw on that the G 63 AMG 6×6 uses almost exclusively series-production components under the skin. A case in point is the drive train: the AMG V8 engine, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and the front drive system have been taken over from the G 63 AMG while the transfer case with low-range ratio has been matched with a rear twin drive train from a 6×6 version which has already proven its reliability in service with users such as the Australian army.

Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6

Technical highlight: the portal axles

Newly developed for a wide variety of applications, the portal axles which have been added to the Mercedes-Benz off-road portfolio are the real technical highlight of the show vehicle. Unlike conventional rigid axles, where the wheels are centred on the axis of the shaft, the wheels of the portal axle are significantly lower thanks to the portal gears on the axle heads. As a result, the ground clearance of the G 63 AMG 6×6 is increased to 460 millimetres (series-production G-Class: 210 millimetres) and the fording depth – or maybe it would be more accurate to say diving depth – is increased to 1000 millimetres (series-production: 600 millimetres).

This design has further important benefits which do away with the need for elaborate adaptation measures. As the position of the axles relative to the chassis remains unchanged, so too do the suspension anchorage points, the steering connection and the position of the propshafts. Furthermore, the portal gear reduction ratio compensates for the huge rolling circumference of the 37-inch tyres so that the gear ratios, speedometer drive and ABS sensors also remain unchanged. An additional benefit of the reduction ratio applied by the portal gears is that the drive torque is only applied to the wheels themselves with the result that the mechanical loads on the drive train – especially the drive shafts – are reduced.

Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6

Through-drive: the center differential

A technically sophisticated solution provides the 6×6 drive system with the necessary through-drive through the differential of the first rear axle to the rear one. The arrangement which has been developed is extremely compact and requires little more space than a conventional differential housing. An extra shaft with an integrated lock situated on the side above the differential takes the drive torque to the rear axle. A chain provides the necessary power take-off for the differential of the first rear axle.

Precisely coordinated logic governs operation of five differential locks

With a total of five mechanical 100-percent differential locks available, drivers would certainly lose track of the settings now and again if they could be engaged separately. This is why the engineers have developed a special locking logic which ensures the best possible traction is available in every situation. The whole system is controlled electrically with the usual three differential lock switches in the centre console which are to be found in all G models. Preselected and engaged locks are indicated by yellow and red lights respectively.

  • Stage 1: the two inter-axle differential locks in the transfer case and in thethrough-drive through the centre differential are active
  • Stage 2: the interwheel differential locks in the tworear axle differentials are additionally activated
  • Stage 3: with the front axle differential locked, allfive differential locks are now active

All lock stages can be selected regardless of whether the low-range ratio in the transfer case is selected.

It is clear that, with a wheelbase of some 4.20 metres, the G 63 AMG 6×6 is not predestined for virtuoso cornering. Nevertheless, in order to ensure impressive agility with corresponding dynamism about the vertical axis of the vehicle, the engineers have varied the torque distribution. The drive torque is therefore split 30 to 40 to 30 percent between the front axle and the two rear axles.

V8 biturbo from power specialists Mercedes AMG

Much of the credit for the superior performance of the G 63 AMG 6×6 is due to the AMG V8 engine and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a peak output of 400 kW (544 hp) and 760 newton metres of torque. Known in-house by the designation M 157, the engine impresses with its technological highlights. The greater thermodynamic efficiency which results from the combination of twin turbochargers, direct petrol injection and spray-guided combustion allows better fuel economy and leads to lower exhaust emissions. Fast and precise piezo-electric injectors spray the fuel into the combustion chambers, ensuring a particularly fine distribution throughout the air in the combustion chamber. An electric low-pressure pump delivers the fuel from the tank to a high-pressure pump in the engine compartment at a pressure of six bar. The fuel pressure in the high-pressure rail is controlled between 100 and 200 bar on a fully variable and demand-related basis, ensuring an agile response in any driving situation. Further highlights of the innovative and unique eight-cylinder powerplant from AMG in Affalterbach include an all-aluminium crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling and alternator management.

Any doubts about the show vehicle’s ability to speak directly to the emotions are quickly dispelled by a look at the AMG sports exhaust system: twin tailpipes ahead of the rear wheels on both sides put out the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound.

Faster shifting with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

Featuring three drive modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission delivers the drive to the transfer case with low-range ratio by means of a propshaft. “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode calls up engine and drive control strategies designed to deliver a driving style which is as economical as possible. In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving modes, the engine-transmission combination displays considerably greater agility. Here, a brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load provides for shorter shift times. Furthermore, in “M” mode, the G 63 AMG 6×6 maintains the gear selected by the driver to the extent that this is permitted by the engine rev limits – a particularly useful feature when negotiating challenging climbs.

The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new fuel economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearings and transmission oil thermal management.

It makes sense to provide an ample fuel supply for vehicles which are designed to be used in remote areas. This is why the standard production tank with a capacity of 96 litres has been complemented by a 63-litre auxiliary tank. The total tank capacity therefore amounts to 159 litres.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Best Option for Swiss Army

The Swiss army's new G-Class will be used for transporting personnel and equipment throughout all areas of operations

The Swiss army has relied on the PUCH all-terrain vehicles for nearly 20 years and after endless testing and stiff competition, the once favored all-terrain vehicles are going to be replaced by none other than the Mercedes G-Class 300 CDI.  The Mercedes-Benz G-Class started its life as a military vehicle so making the switch makes sense, the Swiss Army will get a tried and true military vehicle with technologies that only Mercedes can offer in a stripped down user friendly version for military and emergency service operators.

The 4-seater station wagon variant will account for 75 percent of the planned procurement volume for Mercedes-Benz G-Models, with the chassis variant for shelter-type bodies making up the remaining 25 percent. These will gradually replace the 4189 PUCH 230 GE vehicles which are still in service with the Swiss army. The planned procurement by armasuisse will be submitted to parliament as part of an arms program for ratification.

Mercedes G-Class

Mercedes-Benz G-Class all-terrain vehicles

The Swiss army’s new all-terrain vehicle is to be used for transporting personnel and equipment throughout all areas of operations. The substantial technological upgrade for the Mercedes G-Class vehicles – such as are already in use in Switzerland – entails a further improvement in equipment for deployment in extremely cold conditions. The G-Models feature an enhanced ESP system which is tailored even more effectively to the respective vehicle variants and the different gross vehicle weights. A new feature on all variants is internally ventilated disc brakes on the front axle.

The 6-cylinder OM 642 diesel engine generates an output of 135 kW (184 hp) at 3800 rpm. The rated torque is 400 Nm at 1600 to 2800 rpm. This provides the station wagon with a top speed of 160 km/h on surfaced roads. The engine power is applied to the wheels by way of a 5-speed automatic transmission. With tires in size 265/70 R 16, the military variant of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has a fording capability of 600 mm. The essential core attribute of the G-Class is its outstanding all-terrain credentials resulting from the permanent all-wheel drive, standard-specification reduction gear and three differential locks. The corresponding merits are an inclination gradient of 64 percent, ground clearance of 210 mm and a maximum climbing gradient for the G-Class of 100 percent.

Mercedes-Benz all-terrain vehicles are available with various body variants. These cover the classic station wagon, the chassis for box-type and platform bodies in 4×4 and 6×6 versions and numerous variants with protective equipment. This standard program and diverse seating arrangements from two to ten seats ensure that the right all-terrain vehicle is available for all types of operations.

It offers optimum performance not only off-road but on surfaced roads, too. With robust rigid axles at front and rear and a combination of long helical springs and large-volume telescopic dampers on the four wheel suspensions, the vehicle adapts perfectly to rough and uneven off-road terrain. The extremely high axle articulation of 260 mm ensures that all the wheels maintain their grip in extreme terrain.

With special bodies, the Mercedes-Benz all-terrain vehicle is able to perform a diverse range of tasks. The increasing prominence of crisis reaction forces in international operations and the attendant growing importance of equipment which can be transported by air give rise to an increasing need for lightweight vehicles which offer crews adequate protection. For use with airborne units, the vehicle can be prepared for transportation as an interior or exterior load using helicopters. Various special solutions are available for commando forces.

The G portfolio offers the right vehicle whatever the requirements, from the civil G 65 AMG and G 63 AMG high-end vehicles through the G 500 and G 350 BlueTEC to military vehicles for tough deployment, all produced by experts to identical quality standards.

The G-Class has been demonstrating its legendary qualities in all terrains since 1979, bringing the hallmark Mercedes-Benz attributes to life in its own very special way: G is the fascinating formula for individual and professional solutions on wheels to meet exceptional practical requirements even in the toughest and most difficult conditions.

Under the G-Class’s distinctively angular body beats the heart of an uncompromising all-terrain vehicle. First-class technology, robust workmanship and impressive durability are the characteristics which make the G-Class a genuine Mercedes that is up to any task.

Mercedes G63 AMG Six-Wheeler Tears Up the Desert

For the 6x6 G63 AMG, rocky terrain is negotiated with ease & fording a river is child's play thanks to the one meter fording capability

Earlier this month we brought you the first photos of the new Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6 and now we have a complete look at the massive off-roader with over 50 photos and specs.  Stay tuned as this is part 1. Superior 6×6 all-wheel drive technology, AMG V8 biturbo power and looks that leave no room for any doubt: the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 near-series show vehicle is an off-roader which represents the last word in forward-thrusting power far from the beaten track. 400 kW (544 hp), a 6×6 drive, low-range ratio, five differential locks, portal axles, tyre pressure control system and a special chassis allow this pickup to make good progress in environments where the concept of individual mobility normally bites the dust as soon as the road ends. But anyone who imagines that this is a Dakar-Rally-style vehicle is on the wrong track. Thanks to the wealth of interior enhancements from the AMG stable, the occupants can enjoy the highest possible degree of comfort, even when negotiating the worst that the combined forces of topography and meteorology can throw at them. The exclusive touches even extend to the load area which is finished in solid bamboo.

The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 near-series show vehicle brings together the best of three worlds. The latest, revised G-Class series-production models lend the superior off-roader the effortless superiority and refinement of a vehicle which has dominated the off-road scene for 34 years. They are also the source of the up-to-date interior concept with the contemporary dashboard featuring impressive new instruments and a large, central colour display. Unreserved robustness as well as practicality and a can-do attitude to off-road driving are the traits inherited from the military and the commercial G-Class models. Finally, the renowned Mercedes-AMG luxury and performance division contributes the superior engine technology and the interior which is as luxurious as it is comfortable.

6×6 technology: to the ends of the earth – and beyond

A look at the key data of the G 63 AMG 6×6 makes it clear that this model’s off-road world begins at a point where anything less than a vehicle with caterpillar tracks would have to capitulate. Six driven wheels, an off-road low-range ratio in the transfer case, portal axles, five differential locks which can be engaged on the move and a tyre-pressure control system which allows the pressure in the huge 37-inch tyres to be adjusted in record time while the vehicle is running – all these are features which one seeks in vain in conventional cross-country vehicles. Together, they ensure that the G 63 AMG 6×6 has driving dynamics which are more than a match for the toughest terrain. As a result, the show vehicle is able to storm up the highest sand dunes with ease while sand tracks hold no fears thanks to its unshakable directional stability. Rocky terrain is negotiated with all the agility of a mountain goat; fording a river becomes almost child’s play thanks to the impressive fording capability of one metre.

A case in point is the drive train: the AMG V8 biturbo engine with 400 kW (544 hp) and 760 newton metres of torque, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission paired with the front drive system from the G 63 AMG and a rear twin drive train from the 6×6 version which has already proven its reliability in service with users such as the Australian army. Plus the ingenious portal axles, which also have military origins, here making their debut in a civilian vehicle.

Mercedes G63 AMG six wheels

Independent and neutral: the chassis

The chassis is largely based on the current production configuration, the only difference being that the helical springs and dampers have been adjusted to take account of the changed characteristics of the three-axle model. For the springs, too, the engineers were able to draw on the comprehensive array of “G” parts, which includes no less than 15 different spring rates. While the front axle takes over the reinforced springs from an armoured special-protection variant, the first rear axle has been given a significantly harder spring rate and the second rear axle a softer one. This set-up, together with the rally-proven, adjustable gas-pressure shock absorbers, results in a perfect symbiosis of sporty dynamism and composed comfort, on or off the road.

Macho outside – S-Class inside

Visually, the G 63 AMG 6×6 pickup leaves no room for any doubt as to its true calling. The large tires on the three axles, the huge ground clearance, the height of almost 2.30 metres and the width of some 2.10 metres as well as the clean-cut lines of the pickup immediately inspire respect. Like the G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models before it, the super off-roader with its 5.87-metre-long body has the characteristic AMG brand face with the “twin blade” radiator grille. Other visual highlights include the use of elegant carbon fibre for the integrated LED light strips above the windscreen as well as for the large flared wheel arches while the rear load area section has a distinctive stainless-steel roll-over bar. The load area, which is lined with particularly tough and durable bamboo, can be accessed by means of a tailboard.

Sporty luxury, the hallmark of AMG, is the defining characteristic of the interior. The G 63 AMG 6×6 welcomes its occupants aboard with an exclusive ambience of classic red or light brown designo leather with contrasting topstitching and attractive diamond-pattern quilting. The four electrically adjustable individual seats are heated and ventilated. The rear compartment is equipped with a special centre console while the roof liner and pillars are finished in an Alcantara® covering. The rear panel is trimmed in leather.

Graz is the center of the “G” world

The two G 63 AMG 6×6 vehicles which have been built to date were developed with Mercedes-Benz at the helm. The Graz-based Mercedes-Benz G-Class development department is the centre of competence for all “G” projects and is responsible for development and series support of the legendary cross-country vehicle. Furthermore, Graz in Austria has been the production site for all civilian and commercial G-Class vehicles since 1979. The response to the near-series show vehicle will determine if and when the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 enters small-series production.

132 Cars Destroyed in A Good Day to Die Hard Scene

132 vehicles were destroyed in one epic car chase with Bruce Willis, while driving the Mercedes G-Class in Russia

The newest Die Hard movie, A Good Day to Die Hard, would not live up to the prior movies without complete and utter destruction.  After Thursday’s viewing, the latest film in the series lives up to the Die Hard name by destroying 132 vehicles, in one scene alone.  You read that correctly, 132 vehicles were destroyed in one epic car chase with Bruce Willis, while driving the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Russia.  These weren’t junky cars getting destroyed either, besides the Mercedes vehicles, one of the cars destroyed was a Lamborghini!  Total Scene Cost: $11 million.

In addition to the 132 cars that were beyond repair, another 518 required a lot of work. “With Die Hard it’s about how audacious the action is,” Moore says. “So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I’m a car fanatic.”

In total, it’s an expensive scene that plays out over several minutes and features some classic Bruce Willis one-liners, especially as he’s literally driving over the cars.  Was it worth it?  We think so, nice to see some actual destruction instead of CGI action.

Making of: A Good Day to Die Hard

As for how the filmmakers pulled it off, they got some help from Mercedes for the G Class, a vehicle that fits perfectly with the Russian backdrop.

“You go to Moscow it’s covered in these Mercedes, like yellow taxi cabs in New York,” says Moore. “So we said ‘Hey, can you help us out. Because we cannot afford to wreck all the cars that you see in Moscow. So send us some of those G wagons.”

Mercedes did just that and several Mercedes-Benzes vehicles died in the pursuit of great stunts, especially the ones with the supercharged engines. W’re told in fact the director was tempted to spare one of the cars when he was told he could keep it. “And there was a moment where it was like, ‘If I don’t wreck it, they said I can keep it.’ I really had this St.-Paul-on- the-road-to-Damascus moment.”

But, he stayed true to the destruction necessary for a Die Hard movie and wrecked it.  Don’t feel to bad for him though, A Good Day to Die Hard finished number one at the box office over the weekend and has already pulled in over 100 million worldwide, he can afford a new car. Tuner: Brabus 800 Conversion for Mercedes G65 AMG

588 kW / 800 hp, 1,420 Nm and a Brabus wide-body version for the new 12-cylinder off-roader Mercedes G 65 AMG

Brabus has unveiled their Brabus 800 engine conversion, a powerful performance upgrade for the new Mercedes G 65 AMG at the Quatar Motor Show. Outputting 588 kW / 800 hp and 1,420 Nm instead of the standard-spec 450 kW / 612 hp the G65 can sprint 0-62 mph in just 4.2 second. The Brabus 800 G65 is electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and can be fitted with the Brabus WIDESTAR wide-body – complete with 23-inch Brabus forged wheels available in various versions set the tuned off-roader far apart from the rest. The electrically adjustable Brabus Ride Control suspension offers a perfect symbiosis of excellent ride comfort and safe, agile handling.

The Brabus 800 engine conversion unleashes the power reserves inherent in the 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo engine. To this end the Brabus engine specialists developed a high-tech Biturbo system. The exhaust manifolds custom-designed for the G 65 AMG with integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers optimize throttle response and produce a higher boost pressure than the production turbos. Four water-to-air intercoolers arranged under the Brabus carbon-fiber hood scoop ensure lower charge-air temperatures. This benefits power yield and durability even under extreme conditions such as in the desert. The optimized engine air supply is provided by two air filter boxes in the front fenders.

On the exhaust side there is a Brabus stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts and a sound management system courtesy of a butterfly valve in the exhaust. The high-tech exhaust is controlled with a button on the steering wheel. The V12 can purr discreetly in “coming home” mode or shout out its exhilarating power in the sport position. The sport exhaust adds some visual excitement with its two dual tailpipes – with regular or black chrome finish – exiting on both sides in front of the rear wheels.

The newly programmed engine electronics with special mapping for injection and ignition coordinates the perfect interaction of the high-performance components while at the same time ensuring compliance with EURO V emission standards. The high-performance lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner MOTUL.

The Brabus 800 engine produces 800 hp (788 bhp) / 588 kW at a low 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), already on tap from 2,100 rpm. In the vehicle, peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

The vehicle performance speaks volumes: In combination with the seven-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive system the Brabus 800 WIDESTAR accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph). Without the limiter the high-performance off-roader would be capable of reaching a speed of 270 km/h (168 mph).

It goes without saying that Brabus goes beyond simply tuning the engine of the G 65 AMG. The designers lend the classic G-Class body updated for 2013 an even more striking and dynamic profile with the WIDESTAR wide-body version. The front of the off-roader is characterized, among other things, by the powerfully sculpted fender flares. The Brabus front spoiler attaches to the production fascia and features integrated LED daytime running lights on the left- and right-hand side. But that’s not all: The Brabus logos integrated into both sides of the aerodynamics component are activated by pulling on a door handle or by operating the keyless-entry remote.

The new look for the front is further defined by the front grille with integrated Brabus logo and an additional panel below the radiator grille. The Brabus front-end components are also available for all G 65 AMG models without WIDESTAR conversion. The same applies to the Brabus rear fascia and the Brabus roof spoiler.

The fender flares front and back add 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) to the width of the G-Class body. Integrated LEDs illuminate the running boards of the G 65. They are also activated by pulling on a door handle or by operating the keyless-entry remote. The integrated air vents and the Brabus attachment components on the doors add further striking highlights when viewed from the side.

The widened wheel wells provide space for Brabus forged wheels with a diameter of 23 inches. State-of-the-art manufacturing technology ensures that these wheels represent an ideal combination of lightweight design and maximum strength. There are three Brabus “Platinum Edition” 11Jx23 wheels to choose from: In addition to the popular Monoblock E evo and Monoblock F “Platinum Edition” designs, there is now also the Brabus Monoblock R “Platinum Edition” forged wheel. This design has nine double spokes arranged in two matt titanium and fully polished plains. It is fitted with high-performance tires in size 305/35 R 23 from Brabus technology partners Continental, Pirelli or YOKOHAMA.

Another Brabus high-tech feature is the Ride Control suspension developed in cooperation with technology partner BILSTEIN. An aluminum button sporting the Brabus logo on the center console lets the driver manually choose between two setups for the two-way electrically adjustable shock absorbers. In comfort mode the off-roader provides exemplary ride comfort that even surpasses the production car. At higher speeds and for a spirited driving style the firmer sports setting offers more dynamic handling and even further increased safety reserves.

Furthermore, the Brabus Ride Control suspension features automatic damper adjustment. If the vehicle sensors detect that certain parameters such as speed, lateral acceleration and steering angle might lead to a critical handling situation, the system autonomously switches to the firmer sports setting in the blink of an eye. The sportier damper setup further improves the directional stability of the all-wheel-drive vehicle. In return the CAN control unit also recognizes when the driver reverts to a more moderate driving style. In that event the system automatically switches back to the comfort position.

The interior of the G 65 AMG can be custom-tailored to the owner’s personal preferences in the Brabus upholstery shop. The choice of colors for the especially softy and breathable Brabus Mastik leather and the fine Alcantara is virtually limitless. Just as boundless is the selection of upholstery designs and the variety of exclusive wood or carbon-fiber inlays. In this area as well Brabus can fulfill special color requests and designs, including wood inlays in an especially exclusive yachting design.

The Brabus product range also includes stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit Brabus logo and further attractive accessories such as high-quality velour floor mats and Brabus aluminum pedals and door-lock pins.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Behind the Scenes Photos

Behind the scene photos of the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon shooting in the USA

Bringing all assets of a legend to light. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been on a photo shoot in the USA and the results are absolutely breath-taking! Here are some of the best “behind-the-scenes”-pictures for you from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Facebook page.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Information

Mercedes-Benz has once again significantly restyled the G-Class, its iconic luxury off-road vehicle. In particular, the interior is characterized by high-quality appointments finished with exquisite materials, and the instrument cluster and center console have been completely redesigned. The driver is greeted by a new color instrument cluster display between two new round dials. Other standard features include the latest COMAND infotainment system featuring mbrace2, including a navigation system and internet access. New LED daytime driving lamps and new exterior mirrors bring a few discreet changes to the exterior appearance of the luxury off-roader. New standard safety features include the addition of Blind Spot Assist, the parking aid PARKTRONIC and the adaptive cruise control system DISTRONIC PLUS. A new addition to the range is the 2013 G63 AMG with an eight-cylinder biturbo engine and the ECO stop/start system as standard. The 2013MY G-Class will be in U.S. showrooms this August.

Since it was originally conceived in 1979 as a vehicle to be used primarily in tough off-road terrain, the G-Class has undergone an astounding evolution. Over the course of 33 years, Mercedes-Benz has refined what was initially a very practically-oriented off-road specialist by giving it a premium interior and road-going qualities on par with those of the premium sedans from Mercedes- Benz. The G-Class today is considered the top model among luxury-class crosscountry vehicles, and has provided the gene pool for other very successful SUVs built under the Mercedes-Benz brand. The G-Class has been voted offroader of the year countless times over the past years, most recently this year.

A comprehensive range of features ensures that this classic cross-country vehicle remains in a class of its own in the off-road sector. These highlights include new engines, a significantly extended range of appointments, a new, even more luxurious interior and a few discreet external modifications that nevertheless manage to preserve the timeless, classic design – virtually unchanged since 1979 – that has made the G-Class a true automotive style icon.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Our G-Class has been a force to be reckoned with for the last 33 years. In its latest evolutionary stage, it offers state-of-theart, powerful engines, a further improved range of luxurious appointments and the very latest safety features, as well, of course, as its now legendary off-road capabilities. At the same time the design remains true to its down-to-earth, unmistakable style.”

Discreet exterior modifications, a complete new look inside

The external modifications include LED daytime running lamps and new exterior mirrors. The AMG version also features a new, characteristic AMG radiator grille with double louvers, plus distinctive new bumpers with large air intakes. Red brake calipers and 20-inch wheels, available here for the first time, complement the emotive appeal of its exterior.

The instrument panel and center console have been completely redesigned to include new controls and generously proportioned, exclusively designed trim elements. These give the interior of the SUV a fresh, premium look. Drivers will now find a TFT color display in the instrument cluster between the two round gauges. A large color screen, conveniently positioned in the center, is part of the COMAND system and incorporates a DVD changer and the standard COMAND Controller. This new infotainment system offers, amongst other features, a navigation system with special additional off-road functions, voiceoperated controls and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. In order to ensure that the G-Class nevertheless does not lose any of its character, certain specific design elements in the interior have been preserved. The G-Class retains the grab handle on the front-passenger side, the switches for the three differential locks – clearly aligned within the driver’s field of vision and highlighted in silver trim – and the redesigned shift lever in the lower section of the center console.

New standard safety features include DISTRONIC PLUS, Blind Spot Assist and the parking aid PARKTRONIC with reversing camera. The ESP® system has been completely revised and now includes Trailer Stability Assist and a HOLD function.

Further individualization options from the exclusive designo range are available as enhancements to what is already a very high-quality interior.

Sophisticated engines with high power reserves

The available engines for the 2013 G-Class include the powerful 5.5-litre V8 gasoline engine in the G550, which has an output of 388 hp and offers excellent torque of 391 lb-ft. The engine is mated to the familiar 7-speed automatic transmission. This sixth generation of the stepped automatic transmission that has been developed and produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1960 has once again been thoroughly revised, and optimized with regard to both consumption and comfort.

New to the range is the G63 AMG with V8 biturbo engine with 544 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, which features the ECO stop/stop system as standard.

Superior off-roader

The technical qualities of the G-Class continue to be highly prized. The tremendous torque of its engines makes the luxury off-roader an excellent vehicle for towing, while its three electrically controlled 100-percent differential locks, ladder frame and rigid axle characteristics make it an unrivalled proposition in rough, off-road terrain.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Gets the Gold Treatment from Dartz iTempter

The Dartz iTempter G-Class comes complete with upgraded wood and leather, iPads and a plethora of gold accents

We were first introduced to the Latvian car manufacturer when they unveiled their Prombron, one of the most unique armored cars in the world.  For those of you unfamiliar with Dartz, they are a Latvian-based corporation, that designs, manufactures, and sells high performance armored vehicles.

Today, they have unveiled their iTempter, based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.  The Dartz iTempter G-Class comes complete with upgraded wood and leather, iPads and gold accents.  A lot of gold accents.

The iTempter sports a very unique Dartz designed front grille, a massive body kit with widened arches, updated bumpers, and revised sills. As for the wheels, the  iTempter received a new set of 24-inch wheels finished in, you guessed it, gold. Not to be left out, the bumpers and moldings on the doors are also gold.

Not to be outdone by the exterior, the interior of the iTempter is just as lavish, featuring a unique headliner with wood and leather, and foldaway iPads. There are three iPads that come standard, but every car is bespoke, so you can order as many iPads as you like.

Dartz will only make 12 units of the iTempter and with Kanye always on the lookout for a limited edition Mercedes, you may want to hurry.

2013 Mercedes G63 AMG X Three in Dubai – Video

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who owns not one but three 2013 G63 AMG SUV's, with plates numbered “1”, “5” and “11”

With its market launch only a couple of months ago, the covetable new Mercedes G63 AMG is an extremely hard vehicle to get your hands on at the moment.  Or so we’ve heard from several of our readers that have sent us numerous complaint letters.  It seems however that those complaint letters should be directed to the Prime Minister / Vice President of the United Arab Emirates as well as the constitutional monarch of Dubai, who seem to be stocking up on the new G63 AMG.

A self described car enthusiast shot a video of the three AMG SUV’s owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who owns not one but three 2013 G63 AMG SUV’s, with plates numbered “1”, “5” and “11”.

Other than the likely security upgrades made to the G63’s, they seem to be pretty stock. We have to assume Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum just wanted different color options to suit his mood or perhaps they are for three of his 23 children.

  • Mercedes-Benz G-Class Takes on the Iron Schöckl

The Iron Schöckl uses the Mercedes G-Class to demonstrate a 100% climb, a 45 degree incline

Everyone knows the G-Class is without question the most rugged model in the Mercedes lineup, but in reality, few customers get the chance to push the G-Class to its limits.  For Mercedes engineers, however, its their job to ensure the G-Class continues its legacy of being able to conquer any terrain, so it would only make sense they’d come up with as many ways as possible to challenge the off-roader.

Enter “The Iron Schöckl”.  Named after the Schöckl, a mountain near the Graz plant in Austria where the Mercedes G-Class is tested year round, the man-made Iron Schöckl challenges the Mercedes G-Class by forcing it to undertake a 100% climb (i.e., a 45 degree incline).  Then, at the top, the G-Class enters a movable platform, teeters to point downward, and undertakes a 45 degree descent.

Simply put, it’s the track your five year old would build for his Hot Wheels, only for grown ups.  Check out the awesomeness that is the Iron Schöckl in the video and photo gallery below.

2013 Mercedes G63 AMG and G65 AMG Overview

The new Mercedes G63 AMG outperforms the G65 AMG complete photo gallery and technical information

The new 2013 Mercedes G63 AMG impresses with a state-of-the-art powertrain, updated design and updated efficiency. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivering 544 hp and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission is the main factor behind these changes. For those of you that can hardly wait, the 2013 G63 AMG makes its U.S. showroom debut in August.

Every new AMG high-performance vehicle offers an outstanding mix of “more power from less fuel” – and the G63 AMG is no exception. The “strong man” in the AMG model range has been further enhanced with the state-of-the-art powertrain of the new ML63 AMG. The design has been comprehensively refreshed, so that, for the first time in the 33-year history of the G-Class, AMG customers can enjoy some of the latest cutting-edge systems: spray-controlled gasoline direct injection, the ECO stop/start function and alternator management. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 544 hp and a torque of 560 lb-ft. This enables the 2013 G63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph (electronically limited).

The new G63 AMG outperforms it’s predecessor, the G55 AMG KOMPRESSOR, by 44 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque, and was a clear favorite for G-Class purchasers, making-up 40 percent of sales globally. Key figures for the G63 AMG at a glance:

    G63 AMG
    Displacement 5,461 cc
    Bore x stroke 98.0 x 90.5 mm
    Compression ratio 10.0 : 1
Output 544 hp at 5,500 rpm
    Max. torque 560 lb-ft at 2,000–5,000 rpm*
    Acceleration 0–100 km/h 5.3
    Top speed 130 mph*

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic and ECO stop/start function

The vehicle’s driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption has been reduced by 13 percent (European cycle) thanks to the state-of-the-art biturbo eightcylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, the alternator management system and the ECO stop/start function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic rev-matching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of versatility. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO stop/start function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” mode is also characterized by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green “ECO” symbol, indicating when the ECO stop/start function is on.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes, the ECO stop/start function is off, and the engine and transmission behave more aggressively. Short, precisely defined ignition and injection retardations mean shorter shift times under full load. The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new torque converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearing and transmission oil thermal management.

The allure of the characteristic sound of a V8 AMG

Despite fuel efficiency improvements, there’s been no sacrifice in emotional appeal. The twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound that’s central to this vehicle’s appeal. The latest catalytic converter technology is used to ensure that the G63 AMG meets both the EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and the requirements for the US market (LEV-II standard, on-board diagnosis II and lambda probe diagnosis).

New chassis settings, optimized acoustic comfort

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG Sports chassis have been adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics of the new model. To reduce vibration and noise, the design engineers at Mercedes-AMG also implemented a wide range of measures including optimized bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels. All this ensures a more comfortable ride and helps to keep the driver fit and alert, particularly over long distances.

The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The 2013 G63 AMG runs on new AMG split 5-spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tires. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration and endurance. Ventilated all-around, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 14.8 x 1.42 inches at the front and 13 x 0.79 inches at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-caliper brake system taken from the ML 63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-caliper system on the rear axle. Standard red painted calipers are a special highlight of the G63 AMG.

Fully readjusted ESP® for with more comfort functions

The 2013 G-Class also offers a range of exemplary safety features. For example, the luxury off-roader has an updated version of ESP®, with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function, both for easier hill starts. And in an emergency braking situation, when the driver suddenly releases the accelerator, the brake system “pre-charges” the pressure in the brake lines which ensures maximum effect as soon as the brake is applied.

Characteristic AMG styling with the new face of the brand

The exterior of the eight-cylinder top-of-the-range model has also been refreshed. Following the example of the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the G63 AMG has also taken on the new face of the AMG brand. The high-gloss black “twin-blade” radiator grille with four chrome inserts makes the new G-Class model instantly recognizable as an AMG. The grille design is consistent with the car’s classic contours, with an off-road look perfectly integrated into the vehicle’s overall appearance.

Another completely new feature is the AMG bumper, with three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets. Vertical high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts create a distinctively masculine look for the G63 AMG. New LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. The AMG model also has characteristic fender flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts. Other distinctive features include the “V8 BITURBO” logo on the front fender and a standard brush guard on U.S. models.

Stylish new-look interior with increased comfort

The interior features even more innovations in comparison including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the G63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with color TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The elegant ESELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive interior is created by the designo leather upholstery with fluted leather door paneling. Options available for an even more stylish interior include trim in AMG carbon, designo Champagne white lacquer or designo light brown satin poplar.
