GAD Tuned CLS63 AMG

GAD tuned the Mercedes CLS63 AMG to output a whopping 803-hp for a top speed of 186 mph

The Mercedes CLS63 AMG is one of the most popular cars for tuners – the main reason its 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 engine that can be tuned to output massive power as well as its exterior beauty.  In the recent past, we’ve seen CLS63 AMG by Kicherer, Vorsteiner,  SR Auto Group, Vitt, Mansory and Wald to name a few.

The latest tuner to jump on the CLS63 AMG bandwagon is GAD with their 803hp monster.

GAD started out with a standard CLS63 AMG, which already has 557 hp and 800 Nm of torque , enough for most driver’s with dreams of speed. They  then treated the CLS to new turbochargers that our from  GAD, enhanced the cooling system, optimized manifolds, installed a full sport exhaust system with downpipe, race catalysts and valved mufflers.  And, to top it all off, GAD modified the software for new boost pressure and ignition timing data.

All of this work resulted in the AMG’s M157 V8 outputting a whopping 803 hp and 1,150 Nm of torque.  Meaning, the CLS63 can go past 186 mph, without a speed limiter.

On the exterior, the GAD CLS63 features gunmetal wheels, from HRE, grille and side mirrors.

Mercedes-Benz CLS by Japanese Tuner Vitt

Japanese tuner, Vitt Performance has introduced a new styling package for the Mercedes-Benz CLS (W218)

Japanese tuner Vitt Performance recently unveiled their latest tuning package for the Mercedes-Benz CLS (W218). The latest in a line of tuning programs for the new CLS, with others already introduced by Wald, Mansory and Misha Designs, the new Vitt CLS package adds yet another spin on the already stunning four door coupe.

Noting a markedly Asian design, Vitt’s aerodynamic kit includes a new front bumper with massive air intakes and horizontal led daytime running lights, front and rear fender extensions that add additional air vents and extend the width of the car, new door panels with… you guessed it… more air vents, new side skirts, and a new rear bumper with diffuser and even more venting.  If you’re a fan of venting, you’re going to love the Vitt CLS.

Also offered by Vitt performance is an exhaust system for the CLS with oval RS-style tips.  In total, the pricing for the Vitt CLS kit comes in at €11,590 ($14,475), with the option of ordering a rear wing (€1,348 / $1,683), a four-tailpipe exhaust system and a multitude aftermarket wheels.

Mercedes-Benz USA announced prices for the next generation SLK roadster and CLS coupe line. Suggested retail pricing for the 2012 SLK350 will start at $54,800, while the 2012 CLS550 will begin at $71,300 and the high-performance CLS63 AMG at $94,900. Prices exclude a $875 destination & delivery charge.

SLK Features Trend-setting Retractable Hardtop

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK coupe/roadster represents the third generation of a two-seat sports car that rocked the automotive world when it unveiled the first automatic retractable hardtop in modern times. With the top up it’s a quiet, weather-tight coupe – push a button, and 20 seconds later the car is topless. Like the retractable hardtop of the larger SL model, the rear window of the SLK pivots to match the curvature of the top as it’s being lowered, providing more trunk room than ever.

The SLK350 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V6 that features direct injection and multi-spark ignition. With even more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, the new SLK engine generates 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque.

CLS Four-Door Coupe Gets First Major Redesign

The four-passenger 2012 CLS coupe represents the first major redesign of a car that established an entirely new market segment – the four-door coupe, which combines the emotional appeal and dynamic design of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. When it hits the U.S. market in the summer of 2011, the 2012 CLS line will offer a choice of two exciting models, both powered by new biturbo, direct-injection V8 engines. The 4.6-liter CLS550 engine produces 402 horsepower and 443 lb-ft. of torque, and the high-performance CLS63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter version of the new V8 that’s rated at 518 hp and 516 lb.-ft of torque.

Mercedes-Benz Plans Entry Level Coupe for 2014

Mercedes-Benz will be producing a smaller version of the CLS based on the F800 style for 2012

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS made its world premiere in August of last year and now, thanks to company insiders, we have confirmed that Mercedes will be producing a smaller version of the CLS. The new baby CLS, not yet named, is expected to premiere in 2014 around the same time as the next-generation Mercedes A-Class and B-Class.

The all new vehicle, based on the new front-wheel-drive MFA platform, will take its design cues from the 2012 CLS-Class and the F800 Style Concept. We are expecting to see Mercedes’ very distinctive upright grille and bold lines down the side.

Being the smallest coupe in Mercedes’ future line-up, the model will likely be marketed to a younger audience at a price point set below the U.S. entry level C-Class. A great way to hook younger buyers on the Mercedes-Benz brand and compete with BMW and Audi’s entry level vehicles.

The engine line-up had yet to be released but buyers of the mini coupe should expect to choose from wither a 1.4 or 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine supplied by Renault, thanks to their recent alliance. The French automaker will also supply a 1.6-litre diesel. Topping the range will be Mercedes’ own 2.0 petrol and 2.2-litre diesel, producing around 200bhp and 170bhp.

Power will be delivered to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or seven-speed double-clutch automatic gearbox. The MFA platform has been developed with alternative propulsion methods in mind, so a hybrid is also expected to feature.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 Equipment List

Fulle interior and exterior equipment list for the all new 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 Coupe

Bold proportions: a long hood, compact greenhouse with frameless side windows, dramatic roof sweeping back at an angle towards the rear – these are the hallmarks of the CLS-Class. In 2003 the four-door Coupé was born and the Mercedes-Benz CLS immediately established itself as a new style icon. For 2012 the proportions remain the same but the second generation of this design trendsetter has a completely new look both inside and out. The 2012 CLS550 goes on-sale in the U.S. during the summer of 2011.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS by Carlsson Debuts Ahead of Geneva Motor Show

German tuner Carlsson has also taken a turn at the 2012 Mercedes CLS that they have readied for Geneva

It looks like Brabus won’t be the only tuner with a Mercedes-Benz CLS at the 2011 Geneva Motor show, as German tuner Carlsson has also taken a turn performing their magic on the 2012 Mercedes CLS.

Rolf Schlepp, Chief Designer of Carlsson, worked on accentuating the four-door CLS Coupe’s already sexy styling, adding an aerodynamic kit that includes a new front spoiler, RS front spoiler lip, stainless-steel grille inserts, rear spoiler and rear apron with integrated diffuser.

Under the hood, Carlsson is offering power boosting kits for the many engine variants of the CLS-Class. For example, the CLS 350 CDI achieves a power output that is 20 percent greater than the standard engine thanks to the Carlsson C-Tronic DIESEL POWER additional control unit. Instead of 265 hp (195kW), the self-igniting engine now manages 320 hp (235 kW), while maximum torque has increased from 650 to 780 Nm. This allows the CLS 350 CDI to go from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, up from the standard 6.2 seconds.

Another highlight of the Carlsson CLS are the model’s light alloy wheels in 1/10 design, available up to 20 inches,  and the perfect compliment to the sporty and stylish contours of the new aerodynamics package. For the exhaust, Carlsson offers double-over tailpipes and stainless-steel rear silencer with the option of stainless-steel tailpipes.

Helping lower the CLS’s stance, Carlsson’s C-Tronic Suspension kit that is adaptable to standard airmatic suspensions offers the ability to lower ride height up to 30mm.

As always, Carlsson is the using finest materials available on the interior such as leather, exclusive alcantara, carbon, best root wood, and several other exclusive nature materials. The seats and the doors panels have been covered in Carlsson Nappa with contrasting Carlsson stitching. This leather is exclusively produced for Carlsson as barrel pigmented aniline leather which is available in all conceivable colour variations.

The Carlsson Mercedes-Benz CLS will make its world debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and goes on sale in April.

It was Carl Benz’s patent of the automobile that occurred around the same time as the invention of motion pictures. No one knew the impact that these inventions would have on society, but now more than a century later, Hollywood and Mercedes-Benz are synonymous with glamour and luxury. Both share a rich and inspirational history together – in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS by BRABUS Makes World Debut

Sporty-elegant design paired with aerodynamic efficiency is the trademark of BRABUS and is seen on the new CLS

With the recent release of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Brabus has turned their attention to Mercedes’ four-door coupe range in time for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.  Although it will likely be some time before we see another 200+ mph BRABUS Rocket, the new BRABUS CLS is quite a car.

The second Mercedes CLS generation has arrived and in a world debut BRABUS presents an exclusive tuning program for the new four-door coupe at the Geneva Motor Show 2011.

Sporty-elegant design paired with aerodynamic efficiency is the trademark of BRABUS. For the new CLS body components were developed in the wind tunnel. They are manufactured in OEM quality from flexible high-quality Pur-R-Rim.

The BRABUS front spoiler is mounted to the production bumper and noticeably reduces lift on the front axle at high speeds. The front can be further upgraded with the BRABUS front apron caps. They feature strikingly styled air inlets and LED daytime running lights, available with either dark or chrome surrounds.

The CLS gets a distinctly dynamic appearance with the BRABUS sport fenders. In addition to gills each side also features a horizontal brace with illuminated BRABUS lettering.

The BRABUS sill skirts give the four-door an even lower, sleeker stance. A useful and appealing added feature is the set of integrated entrance lights that are activated via keyless fob or door handles.

LED lights for safely accessing the trunk in the dark are integrated into the BRABUS rear apron. Custom-tailored cutouts in the new rear apron provide the perfect backdrop for the four tailpipes of the BRABUS sport exhaust system. The rear appearance is rounded out with a centrally mounted reflector.

The BRABUS rear spoiler creates a perfect aerodynamic balance and emphasizes the sporty character of the BRABUS designer suit.

Another important contribution to the exclusive BRABUS look for the new CLS comes from the BRABUS Monoblock wheels in sizes ranging from 8.5Jx17 to 10.5Jx20. The OEM-quality alloys are available as one-piece and three piece wheels in six different designs.

The most exclusive version features BRABUS Monoblock VI, E or S wheels in size 9Jx20 in front and size 10.5Jx20 in back. The latest addition to the BRABUS wheel family is the BRABUS Monoblock F wheel. Presented initially as a forged wheel it is now also available as a 20-inch cast wheel, which also celebrates its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2011. On the new CLS this wheel can be mounted in sizes 8.5Jx20 and 9.5Jx20, painted a grey “Liquid Titanium” shade. The largest tires supplied by BRABUS technology partners Pirelli and YOKOHAMA for these wheels come in size 255/30 ZR 20 in front and in size 305/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle.

Specially calibrated to the use of sporty low-profile tires are the BRABUS suspension solutions, developed in cooperation with technology partner BILSTEIN. The lineup ranges from BRABUS sport springs for a ride-height lowering by some 30 millimeters (1.2 in.). Sportier ambitions can be met with the BRABUS complete suspension, which combines the ride-height lowering with firmer but yet comfortable damper settings. CLS models equipped ex-factory with the semi-active AIRMATIC air suspension system can be lowered by some 35 millimeters (1.4 in.) with the BRABUS suspension module.

BRABUS offers the world’s most extensive performance tuning program for Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY model equipped with BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D4 performance kit delivers an additional 31 hp (31 bhp) / 22.8 kW and produces a peak torque of 560 Nm (413 lb-ft).

For the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY BRABUS offers the ECO PowerXtra D6S tuning kit. The plug-and-play auxiliary control unit can be installed by any authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer or any BRABUS competence partner in less than 45 minutes. This high-tech performance tuning also gives the driver the opportunity to influence power yield via the selected shift program of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission.

In ‘Eco’ mode only peak torque is increased from 620 Nm to 690 Nm (457 to 509 lb-ft) between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. The maximum power output remains unchanged. If the ‘Sport’ mode is selected manually or activated automatically both peak torque and power output are increased. Maximum rated power output then jumps from 265 hp (261 bhp) / 195 kW to 313 hp (309 bhp) / 230 kW at a low 3,600 rpm. Using this setting, the tuned turbodiesel model sprints from 0 – 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph).

All BRABUS engines are operated exclusively with ARAL high-performance lubricants.

Fully stainless-steel BRABUS quad sport exhaust systems are available for all CLS engine variants. The precision-calibrated exhaust systems optimize power yield and produce a throaty exhaust note.

Exclusive interior design that meets every customer request is a particular BRABUS specialty. The options for the new Mercedes CLS range from appealing accessories to custom-tailored interiors crafted from especially soft and breathable yet highly durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara.

The ergonomically shaped BRABUS sport steering wheel is available in a variety of leather/wood designs. It provides perfect road feedback and ensures a relaxed posture for long-distance driving.

Scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS logo or the speedometer with 340-km/h dial (213 mph) add individual highlights as do the distinctly sporty BRABUS interior accessories: They include aluminum components such as pedal pads, door-lock pins and shifter, and high-quality clear-coated carbon-fiber inlays for dashboard and center console. BRABUS also offers wood trim in any desired color and grain.

The four-door CLS coupe can also be equipped with a custom-tailored BRABUS multimedia package.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Tuner by BRABUS

Brabus offers up the first look at their basic tuning package for the 2012 Mercedes CLS-Class

Brabus has been building the world’s fastest street-legal vehicles for some time now, which, as you may remember, includes the mighty Brabus Rocket. Based on the prior Mercedes-Benz CLS platform, the Brabus Rocket has a top speed of 227.24 mph, and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds. Now, with the release of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Brabus has again turned their attention to Mercedes’ four-door coupe range, although it will likely be some time before we see another 200+ mph variant.

Here are the first photos of Brabus’ work on the 2012 CLS-Class, which as you can see, is fairly limited in its scope.  It is, however, a good reminder that an insanely fast Brabus CLS is likely in the works, which I think we all can agree, is a very, very good thing.  While we’re waiting, check out more photos of the first Brabus tuned 2012 Mercedes CLS in the gallery below, and we’ll keep you up to date on any new Brabus CLS details as soon as they’re available.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Offers One Third Lower CO2 Emissions

In addition to the CLS, the A-, B-, C-, E- and S-Class models and the GLK have already received environmental certification

The neutral auditors from TÜV Süd have attested a high degree of environmental compatibility for the new Mercedes CLS. The coupe received environmental certification in accordance with the ISO 14062 standard. This is based on a life cycle analysis of the CLS, comprising a comprehensive evaluation of the automobile’s environmental impact. The new CLS will celebrate its market launch at dealers on January 29.

“We have been making rapid advances in efficiency such as have never been seen before in the history of the automobile. And as the inventors of the automobile, we assume particular responsibility for its future,” said Professor Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer of Daimler AG. “We analyze the environmental compatibility of our models throughout their life cycle – from production, through their many years of usage, to end-of-life recycling. This goes far beyond mere compliance with legal requirements.” The environmental certificate, together with explanatory material, has been made available to the public in the “Life Cycle” documentation series, which can be accessed at www.mercedes-benz.com .

In addition to the CLS, the A-, B-, C-, E- and S-Class models and the GLK have already received environmental certification from TÜV Süd.

Over the entire life cycle of the Mercedes-Benz CLS – from production and operation over more than 250,000 kilometres up to recovery – the new model emits 30 percent less CO2 than its predecessor did when it was launched in 2004. Nitrogen oxide emissions have been reduced by 21 percent overall. The overall energy balance is likewise positive: Over the entire life cycle, the primary energy savings amount to 27 percent compared to the predecessor; this corresponds to the energy content of 9,300 litres of petrol.

This is largely due to the significant reductions in consumption. In the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY petrol model, for example, consumption has dropped from the predecessor’s figure of 10.1 l/100 km (on its market entry in 2004) to 6.8 l/100 km, representing a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 33 percent.

The CLS already meets the mandatory recycling rate of 95 percent by weight that will come into force on January 1, 2015; the future requirements in vehicle recycling were already taken into account at the development stage.

Closing material loops plays an important role here. The new CLS makes use of a total of 61 components with a combined weight of 49 kg that can be partly produced from high-quality recycled plastics. The mass of approved recycled components has been increased by 96 percent over the previous model.

56 components for the CLS with a total weight of almost 31 kilograms are made from natural materials. The boot floor consists for example of a cardboard honeycomb structure, and for the tank vent filter the Mercedes engineers made use of coke, a raw material from nature.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Engine In-Depth

The Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG is setting standards, as evidenced by its fuel consumption of 2.6 gallons per 62 miles

A new AMG high-performance engine is expected to deliver maximum performance in all areas – and the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine driving the new CLS 63 AMG is no exception to this rule. Whether its maximum performance, torque and power delivery, engine sound, suitability for long journeys or renowned Mercedes reliability, the powerful 410 kW (557 hp) eight-cylinder engine is able to meet all of the demands which are made of it. Future challenges also include being able to achieve optimum values when it comes to efficiency too, however. Here again the CLS 63 AMG is setting standards, as evidenced by its fuel consumption of 9.9 litres (2.6 gallons) per 100 kilometres (62 miles) (NEDC combined).

As such the performance Coupé demonstrates how exciting dynamism and low fuel consumption can be combined to impressive effect. This is made possible by a unique combination of innovative high-tech systems such as direct petrol injection, twin turbochargers, air/water intercooling and the stop/start function.

Mercedes-AMG is systematically following the trend towards increasing efficiency with its V8 biturbo engine: with a displacement of 5461 cubic centimetres it is precisely 747 cc below the 6208 cc of the naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8. Nonetheless it considerably betters it in terms of output and torque. It develops a peak output of 386 kW (525 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm. In conjunction with the AMG Performance Package these figures increase to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm.

Despite an increase in output of 8 kW (11 hp) and 32 kW (43 hp) respectively, and in torque of 70 and 170 Nm compared to the naturally aspirated V8, which develops 378 kW (514 hp) and 630 Nm, AMG engineers have been able to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions considerably. With an NEDC fuel consumption of only 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the new CLS 63 AMG betters its predecessor by 4.6 litres. This equates to a fuel saving of more than 32 percent, which engine specialists consider to be nothing less than a quantum leap. CO2 emissions have likewise been significantly reduced: at 231 grams per kilometre, the figure is almost 32 percent lower than for the previous model (345 g/km). Both engine variants achieve identical consumption and emissions values. Thanks to the increased efficiency, it has been possible to reduce the volume of the fuel tank from its previous 80 litres to 66 litres. An 80-litre tank is also optionally available at no extra cost.

The achievement of these efficiency and environmental aims has no negative effects whatsoever on dynamic performance. On the contrary, as the new AMG 5.5‑litre V8 biturbo fully lives up to AMG’s brand commitment to “performance”: the CLS 63 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, and with the AMG Performance package the Coupé reaches the 100 km/h mark in 4.3 seconds. The top speed of both engine variants is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Combination of twin turbocharging and direct petrol injection

Mercedes-AMG is presenting an attractive high-tech package with its combination of biturbo charging and direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion. The innovative injection technology brings decisive advantages with respect to fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, thanks to higher thermodynamic efficiency. Particularly fast and precise piezo-electric injectors spray the fuel into the combustion chambers, ensuring a particularly fine distribution of the fuel droplets into the air in the combustion chamber. The result is highly effective combustion.

An electric low-pressure pump delivers the fuel from the tank to a high-pressure pump in the boot with a pressure of six bar. The fuel pressure in the high-pressure rail is controlled between 100 and 200 bar on a fully variable and demand-related basis.

Two exhaust gas turbochargers and efficient air/water intercooling

Two exhaust gas turbochargers located next to the cylinder banks supply the eight cylinders with fresh air. At their maximum speed of 185,000 rpm under full load, the two turbochargers force 1750 kg of air into the combustion chambers per hour. The maximum charge pressure is 1.0 bar, and 1.3 bar with the AMG Performance package. Thanks to their specific, compact construction – the turbine housings are welded to the exhaust manifold – there are significant space advantages and the catalytic converters also heat up more rapidly.

The AMG V8 is the first turbocharged engine to dispense with the usual blow-off valve. This neat solution enabled the compressor housing to be made extremely compact. To ensure agile responsiveness with no time lag, all the air ducts in the intake tract are as short as possible. The wastegate valve, which reduces the pressure in the exhaust system during negative load changes, is vacuum-controlled via an electropneumatic converter. This allows dethrottling under partial loads, which in turn lowers the fuel consumption.

As was already the case in the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, the new eight-cylinder direct-injection unit uses particularly efficient air/water intercooling. The low-temperature cooler with its water circulation is space-savingly accommodated within the V of the cylinder banks. It effectively cools down the intake air compressed by the turbochargers before it enters the combustion chambers, and maintains a constantly low intake temperature under full load. A large radiator at the car’s front end ensures defined cooling of the water circulating in the low-temperature circuit. This guarantees a high output and torque yield in all ambient temperatures and operating conditions. Extremely short charge air ducting makes for outstanding responsiveness. The stainless steel pressure pipes for the fresh and charge air are produced by the hydroforming process, have a wall thickness of only 0.8 millimetres and are designed for particularly low pressure loss.

Aluminium crankcase with Silitec cylinder liners

The crankcase of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine is of diecast aluminium. The low (dry) engine weight of just 204 kilograms is the result of uncom-promising lightweight construction methods, and leads to the car’s very balanced weight distribution. The bearing cover for the main crankshaft bearings is of grey cast iron, and is bolted to the crankcase for high rigidity. Cast-in Silitec cylinder liners ensure that the eight pistons operate with low friction. Drilled ventilation holes in the crankcase lead to a higher output and fuel savings under partial load: above the bearing blocks there are longitudinally drilled holes which connect the crankcase cavities arranged in series. Normally the upward and downward movement of the pistons causes air to be forced into and extracted from the sump, which leads to increased internal friction losses and therefore a reduction in output. The ventilation holes prevent this by ensuring effective pressure compensation between the cavities.

The forged crankshaft of high-grade 38MnS6BY steel alloy rotates in five main bearings, has eight counterweights and has been optimised with respect to torsional rigidity, inertia, low rotating masses and a long operating life. A two-mass viscous damper mounted at the front reliably eliminates vibrations. Each connecting rod journal on the crankshaft carries two forged, cracked connecting rods. In the interests of low mechanical friction and high wear resistance, the lightweight pistons have a metallic contact surface. Pressure-controlled oil-spray nozzles in the crankcase ensure that the highly stressed piston crowns are efficiently cooled.

Four-valve technology with variable camshaft adjustment

Perfect charging of the combustion chambers is ensured by large intake and exhaust valves, of which there are four per cylinder. The exhaust valves, which are subject to high thermal loads, are hollow and sodium-filled. Four overhead camshafts operate the 32 valves via low-maintenance, low-friction cam followers. The infinitely variable camshaft adjustment within a range of 40 degrees on the intake and exhaust sides depends on the engine load and engine speed, leading to outstanding output and torque values. This also results in consistent idling at a low speed. Depending on the engine speed, valve overlap can be varied for the best possible fuel/air supply to the combustion chambers and efficient removal of the exhaust gases. The variable camshaft adjustment is carried out electromagnetically via four pivoting actuators, and is controlled by the engine control unit. The camshafts are driven by three high-performance silent chains, which have considerable advantages in terms of noise comfort compared with cylinder roller chains.

Efficient oil supply and water cooling

Efficient oil delivery under all load and operating conditions is ensured by an oil pump with an electrically controlled compression stage. The oil pressure can be varied between two and four bar, which has advantages in terms of friction and fuel consumption. An extraction stage integrated into the oil pump for the two turbochargers prevents oil from being entrained into the charge air and exhaust gases, thereby helping to reduce emissions even further. Both the sump and the extraction point have been optimised for maximum lateral acceleration and efficient lubrication. The oil capacity is 10.5 litres.

The combined water/oil cooling system is a particularly clever solution: after a cold start, initially the engine oil is only cooled via the oil/water heat exchanger. If the cooling performance of the very compact cooler is insufficient, the flow is additionally directed through the external engine oil/air cooler by an oil thermostat. The advantage of this system is that the engine oil warms up more rapidly, as the engine coolant warms up faster and the oil is later cooled by the coolant. A selectable water thermostat ensures rapid warming of the coolant when starting the engine and driving off.

The engine coolant is cooled using the particularly effective crossflow principle. There is a transverse flow of coolant through both the crankcase and the cylinder heads. Additional cooling slots in the cylinder head ensure more efficient cooling of the combustion chambers, which has advantages during combustion: it enables earlier ignition timings to be chosen without incurring the risk of knocking.

Highly efficient engine electronics for every function

All the engine functions are executed and controlled by a particularly efficient Bosch MED 17.7.3. control unit. This state-of-the-art engine computer not only controls the direct petrol injection, charge pressure, camshaft adjustment and variable oil supply, but also communicates with all of the vehicle’s other onboard control units, such as those of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The microprocessor has more than 30,000 different parameters and functions stored in its memory, and is able to perform up to 260 million individual operations per second. To reduce the load on the engine control unit, the eight individual ignition coils have an integral electronic module – an ignition amplifier – at each cylinder. These ensure a strong ignition spark at all engine speeds and under all load conditions. The highly precise fuel distribution of the piezo-electric injectors is handled by eight high-voltage output stages.

Exhaust system with new catalytic converter housings

Low exhaust emissions, compliance with country-specific standards, a characteristic AMG engine sound and a weight-optimized design – the requirements for the exhaust system of the new AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine were manifold and complex. The CLS 63 AMG complies with all the current EU-5 emission standards, as well as meeting all the requirements of the US market (LEV-II standard, On-Board Diagnosis II and lambda sensor diagnosis).

The turbochargers are welded to the exhaust manifolds, while air gap-insulated manifolds with an inner shell measuring only 1.0 millimetre in thickness ensure a rapid catalytic converter response. For efficiency and to save space, this concept has a tandem catalytic converter housing on each side of the vehicle: adjacent to the firewall, two thin-walled ceramic substrates are grouped into each housing. This solution makes the previous, additional underbody catalytic converters unnecessary. The two ceramic substrates differ to ensure rapid and efficient emissions control: the front one is coated with palladium, while the rear one has a bimetal coating of palladium and rhodium. One lambda sensor per row of cylinders is located in front of each catalytic converter housing, and there is a lambda diagnostic sensor between each of the two thin-walled substrates.

The on-demand lambda control guarantees optimum composition of the fuel/air mixture in all operating conditions, to avoid damaging the catalytic converters. This also benefits the fuel consumption under full load, as the mixture can be leaner than in engines without this control system.

Lightweight AMG sports exhaust system for a characteristic sound signature

The twin-pipe AMG sports exhaust system has a pipe cross-section of 70 milli-metres from the manifolds to the rear silencers. Thanks to a particularly intelligent lightweight design, it has been possible to save 4.3 kg of weight compared with the previous model. The AMG experts achieved this by reducing the wall thickness of all of the exhaust pipes as well as the centre and rear silencers to 1.2 millimetres.

When designing the sound, the aim was to create a perfect synthesis of perceived dynamism and the comfort on long journeys that is the hallmark of a Mercedes. The goal of the developers was to achieve an emotional experience when accelerating and double-declutching, but unobtrusiveness at constant speeds. Unpleasant frequencies or droning noises were effectively eliminated during a series of painstaking tests. The sports exhaust system emits a sonorous eight-cylinder sound that is typical of AMG, while the striking chrome twin tailpipes feature a new design.

Engine production – tradition of hand-built excellence

Like all other AMG engines, the new eight-cylinder biturbo is assembled by hand in the AMG engine shop taken into commission in 2002. Highly-qualified technicians assemble the M157 according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy, maintaining the very strictest quality standards. This painstaking care is attested to by the signature on the characteristic AMG engine plate.

Long tradition of powerful AMG V8 engines

Powerful eight-cylinder engines are an inseparable part of AMG’s corporate history. Established in 1967, the company immediately caused a stir with the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG which succeeded in taking second place at the 24-hour races at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) in 1971. The AMG racing saloon was technically based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. With an engine output of 184 kW (250 hp) at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 220 km/h, this luxury V8 saloon was Germany’s fastest regular production car at the time. Classic tuning as well as an enlarged displacement from 6330 to 6835 cc resulted in an increase in output to 315 kW (428 hp) at 5500 rpm and in torque from 500 to 608 Nm.

A further milestone in the AMG engine story was the M117, the first eight-cylinder unit with four-valve technology. With a displacement of 5.6 litres, 265 kW (360 hp) and 510 Nm of torque, this V8 accelerated the Mercedes-Benz 300 CE 5.6 AMG to a top speed of 303 km/h in 1987. This made the coupé the fastest German car in series production, and American fans reverently christened it “The Hammer”.

Another important engine in the history of AMG was the supercharged AMG 5.5‑litre V8 introduced in 2001: the M113 K developed an output of up to 428 kW (582 hp) and torque of 800 Nm. The supercharged AMG 5.5-litre V8 in the SLR McLaren of 2003 was even more powerful – the M155 developed up to 478 kW (650 hp) and 820 Nm. 2005 saw the debut of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine; depending on the model, the naturally aspirated, high-revving M156 developed up to 386 kW (525 hp) and 630 Nm. Exclusively reserved for the SLS AMG, the likewise 6.3-litre M159 has a maximum output of 420 kW (571 hp) and maximum torque of 650 Nm.

Numerous victories in the “International Engine of the Year Awards”

The supercharged AMG 5.5-litre V8, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 and the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo were all able to win the Best Performance Engine category in the International Engine of the Year Awards. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 also won in 2009 and 2010 in the “Above 4 litres” class.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Tuned by Carlsson

Carlsson presents its comprehensive finish before the new Mercedes-Benz is introduced to the market on January 29th

Stylish use of shape is the trademark of the new generation of Mercedes-Benz CLS models (type C 218). This has provided the automobile manufacturer Carlsson with the ideal platform from which to perfect the model with even more style and athleticism. Carlsson presents its comprehensive finish before the new Mercedes-Benz is introduced to the market on January 29th.

Carlsson chief designer Rolf Schlepp – aka DeLusi – incorporates coupé-style contours and lends the vehicle’s exterior a touch of sophistication with the comprehensive aerodynamics package. The new front spoiler, including the RS front spoiler lip (available in real carbon), the power domes for the bonnet and the mudguard inserts (also available in real carbon) ensure an athletic look for the luxurious saloon car, a look which is underscored further by the stainless steel grille inserts. The front apron inserts with LED fog lamps enhance both the vehicle’s appearance and its level of safety. These improve visibility, are 80 percent more energy-efficient than the standard lamps and fit in perfectly with the xenon headlights and the standard LED daytime running lights.

The side mouldings with their built-in air inlets continue the vehicle’s dynamic transformation. Together with the rear apron and its built-in diffuser (which functions as a tailplane), the rear spoiler ensures extra downforce and better contact with the road. In addition, the stainless steel rear silencer and the two oval tailpipes so typical of Carlsson make a great sound. The stainless steel tailpipes can also be ordered separately.

Both the CLS petrol and diesel engine models benefit from the improved performance provided by Carlsson. With their CK35 performance kit, the engineers from Merzig have improved the power of the CLS 350 CGI model from its standard 306 hp (225 kW) to 333 hp (245 kW) while increasing the vehicle’s maximum torque from 370 to 410 Newton metres. This enables the direct-injection engine to go from 0 to 100 kph in 5.9 seconds, compared with 6.1 seconds for the standard model.

Thanks to the Carlsson C-Tronic® DIESEL POWER additional control unit, the CLS 350 CDI achieves a power output that is a full 20 percent greater than the standard engine. Instead of 265 hp (195kW), the self-igniting engine now manages 320 hp (235 kW) while maximum torque has increased from 650 to 780 Newton metres. This allows the vehicle to go from 0 to 100 kph in 5.9 seconds instead of the standard 6.2 seconds. The Carlsson C-Tronic® DIESEL POWER for the V6 engine can be purchased for just 1785 Euro including VAT. Both performance-boosting kits continue to meet the EURO5 exhaust emission standards.

The vehicle’s new alloy wheels also emphasise the sporty yet stylish contours of its new aerodynamics package. With the Carlsson 1/10 wheel, available in three colours and in a combination of five simple and five double spokes, the automobile manufacturer from Merzig in Germany is setting a trend. Chief designer Rolf Schlepp designed the five top spokes in such a way that they terminate flushly on the edge of the wheel rim while the five double spokes begin deeper inside the wheel receptacle and are arranged outside on the upper edge of the wheel rim. The fact that there is no wheel well and that the spokes are drawn out over the edge give the 1/10 wheels a particularly sporty character.

With the three surface finishes available – Titanium Silver, Brilliant Silver and Graphite Grey – the Carlsson 1/10 wheel can be matched perfectly to one’s vehicle and taste. Carlsson is offering each of the three colour versions of the 1/10 in the dimensions 8.5×19 and 9.5×19 as well as 8.5×20 and10.5×20 inches from 2569 Euro for the complete set of wheels including top brand tyres.

Carlsson’s patented C-Tronic SUSPENSION is responsible for delivering excellent road holding for vehicles with the standard AIRMATIC suspension. This intelligent suspension lowering system lowers the vehicle by up to 30 millimetres and continuously monitors the situation on the road. Depending on the road conditions, the controlling device adapts the residual spring travel, thereby ensuring optimum comfort and excellent driving dynamics.

The vehicle’s finish is rounded off perfectly in the interior. The Alcantara sports steering wheel, pedals and foot rest made of brushed aluminium, velours foot mats featuring the Carlsson logo and the matching boot mat give the CLS’ interior a dynamic, stylish appearance.

With its comprehensive finishing package for the CLS model, Carlsson has once more proven its refined sense of taste when it comes to Mercedes design. Thanks to its efforts, the already stylish standard CLS has really turned into a unique individualist.

Naturally, a TÜV certificate is always included in the scope of delivery for all components in the finishing package so that these can be smoothly included with the rest of the vehicle’s documentation. 125 years of Daimler and Benz

Inventing the automobile for the second time

The automobile will be 125 years old next year, and the company responsible for this invention is still very much at the forefront of mobility today. Mercedes-Benz is highlighting its leading role by presenting a whole series of innovations at the Paris Motor Show – and as such is acknowledging the words of its founding father Carl Benz: “The passion for invention will never die.”

“We are now witnessing the automobile being invented for the second time”, explains CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche. “Innovative mobility concepts such as ‘car2go’ have played just as big a role in this as our eDrive products for local emission-free motoring.” The future for vehicles with combustion engines is only just beginning too, according to Zetsche: “Currently we are making advances in efficiency which are unprecedented in automotive history. As the inventor of the automobile, we feel we have a very special responsibility for its future.”

Advances in efficiency: V6 with 25 percent lower consumption

By way of example, Zetsche pointed to the new V6 engine generation celebrating its premiere in Paris in the Mercedes-Benz CLS350 BlueEFFICIENCY (not available in the U.S.), which consumes 25 percent less fuel than its predecessor, as well as the S250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (not available in the U.S.) which sets new standards in the luxury class. In addition to such innovative engine technology as BlueDIRECT or the remarkable performance enhancements achieved in the diesel engines, other systems contributing towards the increase in efficiency include the ECO start/stop function, the enhanced 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and optimized aerodynamics and auxiliary equipment.

Furthermore, hybrid technology has also been consistently expanded. The successful launch of the S400 HYBRID has been quickly followed by a series of other models, including a diesel hybrid for the first time. At the same time, the combination of combustion engine and electric drive has paved the way towards completely emission-free mobility.

On the road to sustainable mobility: real solutions for electric vehicles

Mercedes-Benz has succeeded in making a widespread impact on electric mobility with its A-Class E-CELL, the electric family car suitable for everyday use in urban areas. Celebrating its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, this fully-functional five-seater features a battery-electric drive and a range of more than 124 miles. Another pioneer of new urban mobility, the smart fortwo electric drive, is now already in its second generation and has been in production since November 2009. Initially limited to 1,000 units for its first production run, this figure has now been increased to 1500 examples thanks to the high demand for the vehicle. Large-scale production of the compact city runabout is due to commence from 2012.

New concepts in mobility: car2go, Paris Autolib, car2gether

The car2go mobility concept began for the public in the spring of 2009 in the German city of Ulm and was extremely successful: some 20,000 customers have taken advantage of the scheme and registered with car2go. The share of car2go customers making up the population of Ulm, meanwhile, has grown to more than 10 percent, while a third of young drivers between the ages of 18 and 35 have already received the car2go authorization stamp on their driving license. A good half of all customers use car2go on a regular basis, while several hundred make use of it every day. Since its launch, more than 350,000 rental transactions have been completed, mostly for a duration of between 30 and 60 minutes. Currently up to 1000 fully automatic rental transactions are recorded each day. In Austin, Texas a second pilot trial of car2go has been running since November 2009. Soon the project is due to start in more international cities – and with the world’s series production car made especially for car-sharing projects, the “smart car2go edition” with solar roof.

Thanks to car2go, Mercedes-Benz has more experience than any other car manufacturer in the integration of car-sharing projects. This know-how, in conjunction with the smart fortwo electric drive, has enabled the company to take over the role of supplier for vehicles and technology as part of a bid by a consortium for the largest car-sharing project in and around Paris, called “Autolib” (a combination of “automobile” and “liberté”/freedom). Some 3000 electric cars are to be made available for hire at approximately 1000 charging stations located around the capital. The project is due to start in September 2011.

In addition, for the first time at the Paris Motor Show the company will be presenting a preview of some one-off two-wheel smart vehicles. Both the smart escooter and the smart ebike are equipped with a battery-electric drive and as such make ideal vehicles for use in the city.

Furthermore, Daimler has also developed another innovative mobility concept for urban conurbations: car2gether. This system enables car-sharing rides to be notified quickly and simply online, and can be accessed either from a PC or via a mobile smartphone. This month Daimler has started trialing the system as part of a pilot project in Ulm.

World premiere: the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLS

Refined sportiness

With its exciting, bold design and refined sportiness, the all-new 2012 CLS benefits from the fact that – as the inventor of the segment – Mercedes-Benz is a whole generation ahead. All the engines available in the CLS are new and provide an improvement in fuel consumption of up to 25 percent compared with the previous models. Also making a contribution to the increase in efficiency is the electromechanical Direct-Steer system fitted as standard equipment and celebrating its world premiere in the CLS. The 2012 CLS is also the first car in the world to feature available LED High Performance Active headlamps.

A generation ahead: with the CLS, Mercedes-Benz created a new vehicle category in 2003 which for the first time combined the elegance and expressiveness of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. The customers were delighted, the competition astounded: for years the CLS has endured as the only four-door coupé in its class, and since October 2004 to the present it has been the car of choice for around 170,000 buyers around the globe. “Customers all over the world benefited from our bold move to launch a completely new vehicle concept onto the market”, explains a delighted Dr. Joachim Schmidt, head of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz. “And with its exciting design, the new edition of the CLS also benefits from the fact that we are a whole generation ahead of the competition with our four-door Coupé.”

The engines: up to 25 percent lower consumption but with higher output

The ultimate in efficiency: this is the hallmark of the engines which are used in the new CLS. Both the output and torque of all units have been increased compared with the previous models, and at the same time consumption has been significantly reduced by up to 25 percent. In the U.S., the V8-powered CLS550 will produce 402hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, two six-cylinder models will initially be available in January 2011: the CLS350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY producing 265 hp and the CLS350 BlueEFFICIENCY producing 306 hp and fitted with the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engine range will be extended just two months later with the addition of the CLS250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, producing 204 hp. In the ECE consumption cycle, it consumes 5.1 liters of diesel/100 km.

Lightweight construction and aerodynamics: making significant contributions to efficiency

The intelligent lightweight construction used in the CLS makes a significant contribution towards addressing the classic conflicting goals of low weight and high strength. As a result the 2012 CLS550 is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to be fitted with doors featuring a full aluminum construction. They consist of deep-drawn aluminum panels with extruded sections, and are around 52 lbs lighter compared with conventional steel doors. In addition, the hood, front fenders, trunk lid, parcel shelf, various support sections as well as major parts of the chassis and engine are all made from aluminum too.

Aerodynamics also play a significant role in the outstanding efficiency of the new Mercedes-Benz CLS. Although the new model is wider compared with the previous model and therefore presents a larger frontal area to the wind, it has still been possible to reduce wind resistance by up ten percent. This is thanks to a 13 percent improvement in the Cd value, which now stands at 0.26.

Electromechanical Direct-Steer system: a new steering sensation

Supreme driving dynamics coupled with superlative ride comfort on long journeys was the focus in developing the chassis for the new Coupe, whose design and functions are geared towards a stylish sportiness. To this end the chassis concept, which has already been well-received by the trade press and the public in the new E-Class, has undergone a thorough revamp, adding a central new component: the electromechanical Direct-Steer system is making its world premiere in the new CLS. This pioneering innovation is a radical step forward in the relationship between driver, car and road. This is because for the first time engineers have the freedom to freely choose and program a wide variety of parameters which can influence steering performance.

In addition, this steering technology also makes an important contribution to the overall efficiency of the CLS: the steering assist function only requires energy when steering actually takes place, cutting fuel consumption.

For the front suspension, the principle of a three-link front axle with McPherson struts – as used in the E-Class – was adopted and developed into a special enhanced design for the new CLS. The principle of the lightweight independent multilink rear suspension, fitted to a subframe, was also adopted for use in the CLS from the new E-Class due to its unrivalled wheel location qualities. Compared with the previous model, all components have been modified to achieve higher levels of comfort and driving dynamics.

LED High Performance Active headlamps: enhanced visibility with complete functionality

The CLS is the first car in the world to feature dynamic LED High Performance Active headlamps, which combine the daylight color impression of LED technology with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon light generation. With a total of 71 LED’s, the headlamps have an exciting look and help to highlight the distinctive appearance of the CLS. The light specialists at Mercedes-Benz were also able to combine the LED technology with the familiar and innovative Adaptive Highbeam Assist for the first time, which has resulted in a completely new level of safety when driving at night.

There are additional benefits of LED-based lighting technology: the average operating life of an LED is around 10,000 hours, around five times longer than that of a xenon light. Also LED headlamps most closely approximate the color temperature of daylight. This means that LED light complements normal human perception patterns. Studies have shown that the closer the color of artificial light comes to daylight, the less the strain on the eyes. With a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6500 K) than xenon light (4200 K).

New driver assistance systems: enhanced safety

More than a dozen driver assistance systems in the new CLS help prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of injuries. New optional equipment includes Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist.

Using short-range radar sensors, Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver if it detects the risk of a collision when changing lanes. If the driver ignores warnings and the vehicle comes dangerously close to a vehicle in the next lane, Active Blind Spot Assist will intervene. Applying braking force to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle via the Electronic Stability Program ESP® creates a yaw movement which counteracts the collision course.

Active Lane Keeping Assist is now also linked to the ESP® for the first time. This system kicks into action if the Mercedes vehicle inadvertently drifts over a solid line to the right or left of a lane. In this case, Active Lane Keeping Assist uses the ESP® to brake the opposite wheels and thereby prevent the vehicle from crossing the line. A display on the instrument cluster warns the driver at the same time. If broken lane markings are crossed, the system controls an electric pulse generator in the steering wheel which generates vibrations for a short time – a discreet but effective cue to countersteer immediately. Before the braking system intervenes, the steering wheel always vibrates to provide a warning.

Exterior: classic Coupé styling with distinctive front

The new CLS builds on the pioneering role of its predecessor yet at the same time is an entirely new interpretation. What immediately strikes the eye is the innovative front design, which is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Visually, the radiator grille is not integrated into the hood but is formed separately. This highlights the long, sporty hood even further. The grille is dominated by the large central star, which underlines the car’s relationship to the other coupés of the brand and also enhances brand identity.

The typical CLS outline, with its elegantly long proportions, is the dominating attribute of the new model. The effect of the dynamic, athletic form has been enhanced with a new interplay of lines and areas. The front edge of the structure above the wheelwells slopes off towards the rear. Referred to by the designers as the dropping line, this novel design feature also represents a new interpretation of a formal design element harking back to the uniquely rich forms of historic Mercedes sports cars.

A distinctive and muscular sports car-like shoulder line above the rear axle highlights the athletic character of the new CLS. The flared wheel arches resemble the powerful thighs of a feline predator waiting to pounce.

The interior: design brings quality to life

The interior of the CLS is also distinguished by a timeless design which combines straightforward elegance with innovative details and handcrafted perfection. An eye-catching feature is the wrap-around cockpit: a high line sweeps from the driver’s door over the instrument panel and across to the front passenger door. The central display has also been integrated seamlessly into the upper part of the instrument panel. At the same time, the downward sweeping side line on the doors continues the dynamic dropping line of the exterior.

The CLS also lives up to its role as a design icon thanks to the innovative nature of the materials used. These comprise an exciting mixture of satin and high-gloss finishes used on the metal surfaces. The refined sportiness of the interior of the CLS is further reflected in the generous use of high-quality trim elements. They are located on the instrument panel, the center console and on parts of the door linings. Customers can choose between two exclusive types of wood: high-gloss brown burl walnut or high-gloss black ash.

World premiere: the restyled 2011 CL-Class

The epitome of luxury coupés

With stylish, eye-catching design, exclusive appointments and cutting-edge technology, the extensively updated 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class underscores its flagship position in the world of refined automobiles. Powered by a new 429-hp V8 biturbo engine which achieves a 10-15% improvement in fuel economy and 23% improvement in CO2 emissions, the CL550 4MATIC opens a new dimension of efficiency in the luxury coupe segment. This significant reduction is achieved thanks to the newly-developed BlueDIRECT technology with third-generation spray-guided direct injection, energy-efficient control of alternator, fuel pump, air-conditioning compressor and power-assisted steering system. It also features the use of low rolling resistance tires and, on the CL600, the energy-optimized Active Body Control system. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz developers equipped the CL-Class with state-of-the-art multimedia technology, thus helping this model retain its position as the epitome of quality in its class. The 2011MY CL-Class will make its U.S. debut in Autumn of 2010.

With the new generation of the CL-Class, Mercedes-Benz is emphasizing fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in this exclusive high-end segment. According to Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG: “The CL is the ideal ambassador for our brand. It combines in a particular degree those things that characterize Mercedes-Benz: fascination, perfection and responsibility. And with the new generation we have gone a step further, too – especially in the realm of efficiency. But in terms of design, safety, comfort and output, too – the CL shows the way forward: simply follow Mercedes.”

In the realm of safety, a combination of cutting-edge camera and radar-based assistance systems – unique in the luxury coupe segment – including the innovation of the Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist systems, makes the CL-Class a “thinking” partner of the driver. The modified Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilization system and the Direct-Steer system also contribute to enhancing safety and driving enjoyment.

Design: a muscular, confident presence

The exterior appearance of the new CL-Class is characterized by the taught profile of the hood, the dynamic V-shape radiator grille and the curving headlamps – design details that discreetly but effectively emphasize the car’s elegant yet powerful lines.

The front bumper presents a new three air intake design accented with a prominent chrome trim strip. An LED strip with chrome surround for the daytime running lights is elegantly integrated in the side openings for the brake cooling air. With standard Bi-Xenon Headlamps with active curve illumination and Adaptive Highbeam Assist, the headlamps offer state-of-the-art illumination. LED turn indicators and position marker lamps round off the car’s advanced image while the rear of the vehicle is characterized by the newly-designed tail lamps.

New V8 bi-turbo engine with innovative technology

The new-generation CL-Class also assumes a pioneering role with its drivetrain. Under the hood of the CL550 4MATIC a new V8 biturbo engine with BlueDIRECT technology delivers impressive power. With its 4663 cc displacement, the eight-cylinder engine produces 429 hp so that despite 0.8 liters less displacement, it is still around 12 percent more powerful than its predecessor, which had an output of 382 hp. At the same time, torque was raised from 391 lb-ft to 516 lb-ft – an increase of 32 percent. The new engine achieves a 10-15% improvement in fuel economy and 23% improvement in CO2 emissions. The CL5550 4MATIC requires a mere 4.9 seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph (previous model: 5.4 seconds). Summing up: the CL550 4MATIC is significantly more agile, torquey and thriftier than its predecessor.

The BlueDIRECT technology package of the V8 biturbo includes a series of new developments, unique in their combination. Worthy of mention among these is the third-generation spray-guided direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition with up to four ignition sparks within a millisecond. Together both enable an innovative combustion process called “homogenous split”. Other factors contributing to the exemplary low fuel consumption continue to be the consistent use of friction-optimized pistons, piston rings and cylinder barrels, the on-demand control of oil pump and the new three-phase thermal management in the coolant circuit. The luxury coupes also controls the alternator depending on the type of driving and on-board voltage. Kinetic energy is recuperated in the overrun mode.

The CL600, with its 510 hp 12-cylinder biturbo engine and 612 lb-ft. of torque remains the top-of-the-line model: it accelerates the luxury coupé from a standstill to 60 mph in a breathtaking 4.5 seconds.

A unique combination of driver-assistance systems

The 2011 CL-Class further enforces its position as an automotive masterwork and a technology platform with the most advanced assistance and protection systems. These highly perceptive assistants convert the coupe into a “thinking” partner that can see, feel and react instantly if it detects a hazard, acting autonomously to prevent accidents or to mitigate their effects. The trailblazing driver assistance systems in the CL-Class are based on state-of-the-art radar, camera and sensor technology.

Active Lane Keeping Assist is a new safety feature making its debut on the CL-Class as part of the optional Driver Assistance Package. If the vehicle threatens to cross a continuous lane marking line, the system actuates an electric motor in the steering wheel, causing it to vibrate briefly – giving the driver a discreet but effective warning hint to countersteer immediately. The active system springs into action if the Mercedes coupe unintentionally crosses a continuous lane marking line to the right or to the left. In this case, the car intervenes by gently braking the wheels on the opposite side of the car, helping the driver to stay in the lane. Active Lane Keeping Assist is built upon the existing ESP® Electronic Stability Program.

Active Lane-Keeping Assist evaluates information provided by a camera mounted on the inside of the windshield. It identifies the contrast between the road surface and the lane markings. In addition, the optional radar system scans the side of the roadway for dividers and other roadway edge markings. The system also evaluates the driver’s actions and can reliably determine whether the car is departing from the lane intentionally or not. For instance, there is no warning if the driver accelerates hard just before passing or when accelerating onto a highway, or if he brakes hard or steers into a curve.

Targeted brake actuation: Active Blind Spot Assist

Another innovation Mercedes-Benz offers for the CL-Class is Active Blind Spot Assist, a system that makes use of a multi-stage warning concept. If the system detects that a lane change would be too dangerous, it warns the driver by displaying a red triangle in the glass of the exterior mirror. Close-range radar sensors monitor the area immediately to the side and to the rear of the car. If the driver disregards this warning and, for example, uses the turn indicator, an audible warning also sounds. If the driver continues to ignore the warnings and comes dangerously close to a vehicle in the neighboring lane, the system acts: a corrective braking intervention via ESP® is applied to the wheels of the opposite side of the vehicle. This causes a yaw movement about the car’s vertical axis due to the unequal distribution of the braking forces. If an accident still cannot be avoided, the active Blind Spot Assist system can reduce the consequences of a collision through the brake actuation.

Assistants to see and be seen better

The Adaptive High Beam Assist system is now offered as standard equipment on the CL-Class. This camera-based system can recognize oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead with their lights on, and then softly transitions from high-beam to low beam to create the best possible lighting conditions without dazzling other drivers. In addition, Mercedes-Benz offers the optional Night View Assist PLUS system for the CL-Class, featuring a special infra-red camera for pedestrian detection: pedestrians are now specifically highlighted in the display, to help alert the drivers in low light conditions.

On European models, the images supplied by the windshield-mounted camera are also used by the new, optional Speed Limit Assist (not available in the U.S.), which recognizes speed limit signs in passing and shows the relevant speed limit in the central display and on the navigation system’s map display.

For the new-generation CL-Class, Mercedes-Benz has also improved the long and medium-range radar used by Brake Assist (BAS PLUS) and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity cruise control.

An “electronic crumple zone”: the PRE-SAFE® Brake

Mercedes-Benz offers another radar based system for the luxury coupé as a component of the Driver Assistance Package: PRE-SAFE® Brake with automatic emergency braking. If the driver is distracted and fails to recognize the imminent danger of a rear-end collision or the warning signal of an assistance system, PRE-SAFE Brake can intervene and autonomously apply partial braking. If the driver fails to react even after automatic, partial braking action, this new version of PRE-SAFE® Brake activates maximum braking pressure around 0.6 seconds before an unavoidable collision – this emergency braking action can significantly mitigate the severity of the impact. The PRE-SAFE® Brake thus acts as a kind of “electronic crumple zone”.

ATTENTION ASSIST Warns Drowsy Drivers:

Drowsiness is one of the most common causes of accidents. This is why Mercedes experts have developed the ATTENTION ASSIST system which forms part of the standard equipment of the new CL-Class. The system continuously monitors more than 70 different parameters in order to identify driver drowsiness and provides a warning before the dangerous microsleep phase begins. Observing the driver’s steering behavior has proved to be a particularly strong indicator: several years of practical research by Mercedes-Benz have shown that drowsy drivers make minor steering errors which they often correct very rapidly in a characteristic way. This steering behavior is recognized by a special steering angle sensor. Observing the driver’s eyes cannot always provide conclusive evidence of sleep since many drivers can experience micro-sleep withtheir eyes open.

Active Body Control reduces the effect of a crosswind

The CL-Class also meets the highest standards in terms of driving dynamics and agility. This is in part thanks to Direct-Steer, which can vary the steering ratio based on the steering angle, and modified Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilization (standard on the CL600, CL63 and CL65 AMG). This latest stage in active body development modifies the wheel load distribution via the ABC spring struts within milliseconds (depending on crosswind direction and intensity) to help compensate for crosswind forces.

The Active Body Control suspension system – which ushered in new dimensions of driving dynamics in the preceding CL-Class in 1999 – is unique worldwide as it not only regulates roll, but pitching and squatting movements as well, ensuring a perfect harmony of comfort and handling stability. Since the introduction of this innovative system, engineers in Sindelfingen have continuously refined it, so that eleven years later it still marks the pinnacle of automotive engineering. In addition to crosswind stabilization, the new suspension features an energy-optimized hydraulic pump that takes part of the burden off the engine, contributing towards reducing fuel consumption.

Additional safety and agility during spirited driving is provided by the standard Torque Vectoring Brake in the new CL-Class – targeted, one-sided braking intervention at the inside rear wheel when cornering. This enables the luxury coupe to turn into the bend under precise control with even greater agility.

On-board infotainment: the most advanced multimedia technology

In line with its serene character and sophisticated technology, the CL-Class also sets standards for onboard infotainment. The latest innovation, SPLITVIEW technology, is optionally available for the COMAND system centrally located in the center console. This innovative display concept allows the driver and front passenger to view different contents simultaneously on the same screen. For example, while the driver uses the map-based navigation system, the front passenger can watch a DVD.

The standard COMAND control and display system with Bluetooth®, USB and SD card interfaces offers customers the possibility of exporting their stored data to other vehicles and multimedia devices. It is also possible to transfer and update navigation data. Mercedes-Benz integrates the Media Interface – an interface for mobile audio and video devices – via an auxiliary cable located in the glovebox. Standard audio equipment also includes radio, a 6-disc CD/DVD player with MP3 function, an equalizer with speed-dependent volume control and the 7.2 GB MUSIC REGISTER which stores around 2,500 digital music files in MP3, AAC or WMA format. The system recognizes music files played on CD, DVD or from the MUSIC REGISTER using its stored Gracenote® database, and shows the title, album and performer in the color display. The new Music Search function enables passengers to search SD memory cards, USB sticks, CDs and DVDs for specific music titles and performers.

The standard Navigation system features a nationwide map system stored on a 40-Gigabyte hard disk, enabling extremely rapid route calculation. Another factor contributing to a high level of navigation ease is the detailed 3-D map display with SIRIUS real-time traffic information.

The standard Voice Control system allows the driver to operate the navigation, telephone and audio devices via whole-word input — meaning the driver no longer needs to spell out his commands but simply speaks whole words when entering the destination, choosing a radio station or a music title from the Music Register, or when calling up a name from the phone book.

Co-developed by Mercedes-Benz and Harman Kardon® surround sound system with Discrete Logic7® technology delivers an outstanding performance with three-dimensional sound.

Interior: carefully selected materials and first-class finish

In the interior, too, Mercedes-Benz developers and designers perfected the CL-Class, paying careful attention to detail. A total of four different kinds of fine wood open up the possibilities for perfectly matched material and color concepts: a choice of light or dark high-gloss burl walnut, black ash and high-gloss brown poplar on the CL600. Important to note: in accordance with Mercedes-Benz’ corporate philosophy of sustainability, the CL-Class uses only European wood from renewable forestry sources. Most of the wood components are hand-made and matched individually for color and grain by experienced craftsmen.

The seating materials found in the new CL-Class are of the most exquisite quality. There is a choice of four tasteful color combinations for the vehicle interior: black premium leather, savanna/cashmere premium leather, ash/grey premium leather, sahara beige/black premium leather.

The multifunction wood/leather steering wheel of the CL-Class has also been modified by the Mercedes-Benz designers: the rim and airbag module are lined with soft nappa leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction wood/leather steering wheel sewn with sophisticated double stitching.

Apart from this, Mercedes-Benz makes more use of light as a styling element in the vehicle interior. Standard ambient lighting provides a choice between three lighting moods: solar (amber), neutral (white) and polar (ice blue).

Innovative holder featuring Mercedes-Benz quality

Apple iPad always ready for use

Mobile entertainment is what the Apple iPad is all about. Thanks to an innovative docking station, Mercedes-Benz Accessories is now demonstrating how the tablet computer could be integrated into the rear of many Mercedes-Benz models.

A prototype docking station is being presented at the Paris Motor Show in an S-Class, and the plan is to launch the integration solution for the iPad onto the market for a variety of Mercedes models after development for series production. Mounted on the back of the front seats at head restraint height, the holder significantly extends the usability of the iPad: the battery of the tablet PC begins to charge as soon as the device is placed in the holder. Once at the destination, it can be simply removed without having to be switched off, and during the journey all of the entertainment products stored on the iPad can continue to be used. The docking station can be turned and tilted to achieve the best viewing angle, and if the vehicle is fitted with the Mercedes-Benz InCar Hotspot then even an iPad without cellular functionality can enjoy the benefit of a full connection to the Internet.

The frame of the docking station, along with the attachment to the seat structure, have also been designed and tested in line with the high safety standards applied at Mercedes-Benz. A significant safety benefit is provided by the fact that the iPad is anchored in the docking station – unlike a device held in the hand or placed on a seat – and in the event of an accident cannot fly uncontrolled through the vehicle, potentially causing injury.

Installation of the docking station takes approximately 1.5 hours, and the vehicle does not require any preinstallation. All in all, the docking station is the perfect match for Mercedes-Benz in terms of its design, look and functionality, and at the same time also highlights the high quality feel of the vehicle interior. The docking station will be available in the U.S. market in 2011.

The CLS can not only detect parking spaces, but can also actually park the vehicle for you.

The CLS is the first car in the world to feature fully dynamical LED high-perfor mance headlamps (€1,773.10) as an option, combining the fascinating colour impression close to natural daylight of LED technology with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon generation of headlamps. For the first time, the new lighting system offers the proven Intelligent Light System offered in Mercedes models with bi-xenon headlamps in conjunction with LED technology. With a total of 71 LEDs, the headlamps look very striking, accentuating the unmistakable looks of the CLS.

More than a dozen driver assistance systems in the new CLS help prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of injuries. New on board are Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Both are available in the Driving Assistance package Plus in conjunction with DISTRONIC PLUS, BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE® brakes for €2,677.50. The two new assist systems not only detect unintentional lane changes and vehicles located in the blind spot, but can also correct the direction of travel with gentle application of the brakes if the driver ignores the visual or sensory hazard warnings.

The CLS “Edition 1” is limited to the first year after the market launch. The outstanding features of this special model (option price starting at €6,664) include matt exterior paintwork in manganite grey SHAPE, shimmering metallic leather upholstery designo corteccia pearl, floormats with “Edition 1” lettering, black designo roof liner and aluminium pedals. For the interior trim elements in the “Edition 1”, there is a choice between poplar light-brown satin, ash black high-gloss or, as an optional extra, AMG Carbon (at €10,115).

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Engine Specs Have Emerged

The second generation 2012 Mercedes CLS is expected to be available in four engine variants: two petrol engines and two diesel

We’ve brought you numerous spy photos of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS over the past months, and now, new 2012 CLS engine specifications have emerged.  If the rumors are to be believed, the second generation CLS is expected to be available in four engine variants – two petrol engines and two diesel. With the exception of the AMG version, all will feature the stop/start technology to improve fuel consumption.

For the CLS petrol engines, the two models said to be coming are the CLS350 CGI and the CLS550 CGI.  The first will feature the new direct-injection 3.5 liter V6 engine with an output of 306 PS (301 bhp / 225 kW) and 368 Nm (272 lb-ft) of torque, while the 550 CGI will feature a new 4.6 liter twin-turbocharged V8 that delivers 435 PS (429 bhp / 320 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. The CLS 550 CGI is expected to be offered with an all-wheel drive option as well.  As for the CLS Diesel options, look for a 350 CDI with a 3.0 liter V6 producing 185 kW (252 PS) as well as a 250 CDI with a four-cylinder diesel engine producing 150 kW (204 PS).

And while we’re on the subject of the CLS, there’s significant speculation that the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake (which made its premiere at Auto China 2010 as a concept) will enter series production for the 2011 model year, meaning those in the market for a larger estate model could soon have another alternative. We’ll keep you posted as new details of the 2012 Mercedes CLS are revealed; in the meantime, you can check out photos of the 2012 CLS in the gallery below.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Tuner Concept by Lorinser

Sports dress for the next generation Mercedes-Benz CLS – Lorinser grants a first glance at its designer version

The redesigned Mercedes-Benz CLS will be available for delivery to customers in 2011. German Mercedes tuner Lorinser, released a rendering showing they are already working on options to individualise the technology and design for the new CLS. Lorinser is starting its work well in advance of the release of the CLS to insure a well thought out concept that provides the four-door sports-limousine with a stylish and cutting edge profile. Because upgrading a vehicle that is not yet for sale can be quite difficult, a well trained expert staff is needed and Lorinser is up to the challenge.

“We will distribute our tuning-version globally in 45 countries, therefore a sophisticated body-design is required.”, explained Marcus Lorinser, owner of Sportservice Lorinser. The Lorinser-interpretation emphasises the sportive features with strikingly impressive innovation. Large air intake grills characterise the distinctive appearance of the front-end and enable an optimal fresh air supply to engine and brakes. The extended fenders not only enhance the masculine appearance of the car, but also provide space for the 21-inch light-alloy wheels.

But not only the styling will be optimised: Chassis, engine and interior is also upgraded at Lorinser-manufacturing. Featuring these upgrades, the Lorinser-CLS will advance to “eye candy” on the luxury boulevards of all major cities.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS Spotted with Virtually No Camoflauge

New photos have emerged that lay to rest any questions regarding the next-generation 2012 Mercedes CLS exterior updates

New spy photos have emerged that pretty much lay to rest any questions that remain regarding the next-generation 2012 Mercedes CLS, at least in respect to its exterior rennovations.  As you’ll see in the photos, virtually every major area of the 2012 CLS is visible, including the front headlight, most of the front bumper, the entire side profile, and the entire rear of the model.  I won’t waste your time describing at length the CLS’s new look, as you can simply view the pictures and its various design characteristics for yourself; but I will say that overall, I think the Mercedes designers have done a fantastic job updating what was already a gorgeously styled model.  Look for the 2012 Mercedes CLS to make its premier at the Paris Motor Show later this year, with the model going on sale sometime in 2012.  You can check out the complete collection of the 2012 Mercedes CLS-Class photos in the gallery below.  Thanks to Left Lane News for the pics.
