In the “Comfort” setting the emphasis is on relaxed, effortlessly superior cruising plus driving power that is as energy-efficient as possible. “Slippery” mode optimises the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, “Individual” mode enables the driver to programme and store personal preferences in the individual setting parameters, regardless of the engine variant.

GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Interior

GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC

A perfect combination: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission

Depending on the drive programme, the nine-stage automatic transmission 9G-TRONIC changes gears with high agility and responsiveness or effortless calm. The potential of the new transmission is exploited to the full. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting, as well as gentle, barely perceptible gear shifting for enjoyable travelling. The transmission’s large kingpin inclination enables cruising with the lowest engine speed during relaxed driving. This simultaneously ensures optimum efficiency.

The AMG development engineers have also specifically designed the standard-fit permanent all-wheel drive 4MATIC for performance-orientated use in the GLE 450 AMG. The drive torque is distributed in a ratio of 40:60 (front axle:rear axle). This rear-biased configuration raises the lateral dynamics to an above-average level – supported by the perfect interplay with the adapted acceleration skid control ASR, the ESP® with Curve Dynamic Assist and the all-wheel drive control system 4ETS. Also new is the specific AMG rear axle transmission with a shorter ratio of 3.47:1.

Sophisticated chassis: AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS Plus damping system and Sports Direct-Steer system

As standard, the vehicle comes with the AIRMATIC package including an air suspension, infinitely variable adaptive damping system (ADS Plus) and automatic level control. The damping system changes its priorities from highly dynamic to comfort-orientated depending on the drive programme. The current operating conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and the driving speed from the ESP® signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel. In “Sport” and “Sport Plus” mode the body is lowered by 15 millimetres.

In combination with the newly configured, degressive Sports Direct-Steer system, the steering ratio of which is very direct at 17.4:1, and the compact sports steering wheel, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions – whether manoeuvring in the city, at high speeds on the motorway, or with a brisk style of driving on winding mountain passes.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé

Unique combination of agility, elegance and everyday practicality

Mercedes-AMG is once again extending its product portfolio with the addition of a very dynamic model: the new GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé* combines a sporty, elegant design with the brand’s hallmark Driving Performance and the advantages of an SUV in terms of seating position, interior flexibility and also traction off the beaten track. The 270 kW (367 hp) 3.0‑l itre V6 biturbo engine, the automatic transmission 9G‑TRONIC with shortened shift times and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive configured with a rear bias form the basis for an especially dynamic on-road driving experience. A significant contribution is also made here by the independent sports suspension based on the multi-chamber air suspension system AIR BODY CONTROL with adaptive damping adjustment. Additionally, the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé also enables occasional off-road excursions to be undertaken: the ground clearance can be increased at the touch of a button, and the pneumatic all-round self-levelling ensures a constant vehicle level at all times.

Spontaneous and powerful: the AMG 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine

The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine is used in numerous AMG Performance models. It delivers a maximum output of 270 kW (367 hp) plus maximum torque of 520 newton metres. Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. The performance yield comes courtesy, among other things, of the boost pressure, which has been increased to 1.1 bar. The NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder liners is also used in the Formula 1 engines of MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS. Especially tough and, therefore, wear-resistant, this coating also reduces friction, thereby contributing to higher efficiency. The same applies to the spray-guided multiple injection with up to 200 bar fuel pressure. Visually, the powerplant can be identified by the red aluminium insert in the engine cover and the AMG logo.

Short shift times, high efficiency: the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission

The new GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé is equipped with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which Mercedes-AMG developers have specially configured for a more dynamic driving experience. They have managed to reduce the shift times of the 9-speed transmission by means of a dedicated software application. Courtesy of multiple downshifts, quick bursts of speed are possible with the 9G-TRONIC. Thanks to defined sparking manipulation, the double-clutching function allows more emotional and quicker gear changes in the “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Manual” transmission modes.

“Manual” mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected transmission mode, and the driver can now change gear using the standard-fit shift paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

More agility: the sports suspension based on AIR BODY CONTROL

For added agility, more neutral cornering behaviour and higher traction even when driving at speed, the developers in Affalterbach have designed a dedicated sports suspension on the basis of the AIR BODY CONTROL full-support multi-chamber air suspension system. The four-link front axle is fitted with special steering knuckles and load-bearing joints; all components have been optimised in terms of rigidity. A more negative camber on the front axle and on the multi-link rear axle enhances lateral dynamics. The elastokinematics of both axles have been designed to be more rigid in general. The sum of these measures improve agility, and boost the dynamics.

The three-chamber air suspension system with a sporty spring/damper set-up and continuously variable damping adjustment combines excellent vehicle dynamics with a high level of ride comfort. The spring elements, which feature a composite design that is both light and strong, help reduce system weight compared with conventional air suspension.

The AMG developers have used a special matrix to define four spring rates, which are selected to suit the current transmission mode and driving conditions. In “Comfort” mode, the handling ranges from neutral to slight understeer. In “Sport” mode, the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé handles significantly more dynamically with reduced roll thanks to the harder spring rate. “Sport Plus” mode delivers further enhanced agility and cornering ability due to the front and rear axles being sprung with different spring rates.

During sudden changes of load, fast cornering, heavy acceleration or hard braking, the spring rate is automatically made harder on the front or rear axle. This effectively reduces roll and pitching while stabilising the vehicle.

The adaptive damping adjustment also features in a model-specific configuration and offers a choice of the three modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”. This provides for broader scope between a high level of comfort on long journeys and sporty driving dynamics.

With the AIR BODY CONTROL suspension, the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé is also suitable for occasional excursions into unpaved terrain: the vehicle level is not only permanently set to a constant height, it can also be increased at the touch of a button for more ground clearance – even while on the move. The fording depth of 300 mm and the approach angle of 19.8 degrees and departure angle of 20.8 degrees are evidence of the off-road capabilities of the SUV Coupé. It is equally suitable as a towing vehicle: it has a braked towing capacity of up to 2460 kg.

Rear-biased and agile: AMG Performance 4MATIC

The standard-fit AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive combines optimum traction, hallmark AMG vehicle dynamics and maximum driving pleasure. The system features a rear-biased torque distribution of 31 percent to the front axle and 69 percent to the rear axle. This arrangement ensures greater vehicle dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road as well as improved traction as it uses the dynamic shift in the axle load toward the rear axle that occurs during acceleration to deliver more drive torque to the rear. A multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 50 Nm guarantees that the frictional connection potential of all four wheels is exploited to the full, particularly on snow and ice. On road surfaces with different levels of grip, the all-wheel drive responds with targeted brake application on one wheel in order to also guarantee optimum traction in such instances.

Characteristics at the tap of a finger: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

With the five DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual, the characteristics of the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé can be tailored to suit individual preferences at the tap of a finger. The broad range extends from efficient and comfortable to extremely sporty. This modifies key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. Independently of the DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the driver has the option of pressing the “M” button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes “Sport” and “Sport Plus” are even more strongly configured for driving dynamics in the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé than in the series-production models. This is thanks to the more agile, more direct accelerator characteristic and the more emotive gear shifting with shortened shift times, double-declutching function and cylinder shut-off. The higher idle speed also facilitates even faster moving off and acceleration from standstill.

In order to increase efficiency, in “Eco” mode the ECO start/stop function and the gliding function reduce fuel consumption: when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range between 60 and 160 km/h, the clutch is disengaged and the engine is decoupled from the powertrain. The electronics reduce the engine speed to idle level, and the driving resistance is reduced by the compression and frictional forces of the engine in overrun mode.

The “Comfort” mode provides for particularly comfortable motoring. To ensure maximum possible driving safety also in this mode, the spring and damper forces are instantaneously adjusted, for example in case of a sudden evasive manoeuvre.

Direct and with clear feedback: speed-sensitive sports steering

The speed-sensitive sports steering has a variable ratio in the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé. It stands out with its precise, highly authentic feedback. Steering power assistance is adjusted in the two stages “Comfort” or “Sport”. The relevant characteristics are automatically activated depending on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalised in “Individual” mode.

The large-sized braking system with internally ventilated compound brake discs decelerates the performance SUV Coupé reliably and quickly. Perforated discs in size 360 x 36 mm with 4-piston fixed callipers and AMG lettering are fitted on the front axle, while discs in size 320 x 24 mm with 1-piston fixed callipers feature at the rear.

Assistance systems such as Active Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST or ESP®Curve Dynamic Assist enhance on-board safety as standard. Comfort and safety can be further enhanced with additional driver assistance systems.

Sporty and distinctive: the exterior design

The front view of the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé reveals its independent character, with the diamond radiator grille with chrome pins and a louvre in high-gloss black with insert in high-gloss chrome and AMG lettering in high-gloss chrome. The sportily distinctive air intakes in the AMG front apron feature fins in silver chrome. Down below, the silver chrome front splitter ensures an optimal flow of air to the cooling modules.

Compared with the GLC 43 4MATIC, the A-pillar features a flatter slope angle. The squat greenhouse blends in seamlessly with the side of the vehicle to emphasise the coupé silhouette. The interplay between high beltline and wide shoulders results in proportions that lend the GLC Coupé its dynamic looks.

High-gloss black-painted, high-sheen 48.3 cm (19-inch) AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels dominate the side view. The mixed-size tyres in the dimensions 235/55 R 19 on 8.0 J x 19 at the front axle and 255/50 R 19 on 9.0 J x 19 at the rear axle emphasise the powerful appearance. As an option, other combinations and designs are available, right up to 21-inch wheels in a bichromatic design.

The tail end also sports characteristic highlights and exudes sporty, aesthetic appeal with chrome-plated tailpipe trim elements in a four-pipe look. The AMG-specific rear apron sports trim in silver chrome. Narrow, divided tail lights and the sharp spoiler lip invoke the design line displayed for the first time with the S-Class Coupé and followed by all of the coupé models from Mercedes-AMG. The rear window dispenses with a wiper, as the airflow does not fall away until after the spoiler lip, which means that water is unable to strike the rear window.

Sporty characteristics: the interior design

The interior reinforces the consistently dynamic bias with numerous specially designed details. The colour combination of sporty, functional black with red contrasting features is a characteristic element. Longitudinal-grain aluminium trim highlights the sporty aspirations. The multifunction sports steering wheel in black leather with red contrasting topstitching and featuring a flattened bottom section is ideally suited to an emphatic driving style.

The driver and front passenger enjoy a secure position in the sports seats even when driving at speed, thanks to the improved lateral support. The upholstery in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre boasts its own seat upholstery layout plus red topstitching. To match the seat design, the door centre panels are styled in the same material. As a result, the standard-fit red designo seat belts also blend into the design. With two large round dials and central colour multifunction display with a 5.5-inch (13.97 cm) screen diagonal, the AMG instrument cluster places all the important information in the driver’s field of vision. The ECO display supports a fuel-saving driving style. Dials in a chequered-flag look and the distinctive typography lend the large displays an especially sporty touch. Customers with a passion for motorsports will be pleased to note the RACE TIMER for recording lap times on closed-off tracks.

Flexible and spacious: the space conditions

For all its sportiness, the dynamic newcomer also impresses with some practical advantages. With a capacity of 491 to 1400 litres, the luggage compartment leads this market segment. Split-folding rear seat backrests, which fold down in the ratio 40:20:40, enable a variety of configurations to be used for particularly long or bulky items of luggage. And the availability of space in both front and rear is on a par with the GLC 43 4MATIC in terms of comfort level. Entrance height, shoulder room, elbow room and legroom are all identical.

Comprehensive: infotainment features

The standard infotainment equipment in the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé includes the Audio 20 CD with 7-inch (17.8 cm) display, Frontbass, Bluetooth® hands-free function, audio streaming and two USB ports. The optional Garmin® MAP PILOT with Live Traffic expands Audio 20 CD into a fully-fledged navigation system with traffic jam avoidance integrated into the onboard electrical system. The navigation software and map data are supplied on an SD card.

When COMAND Online is installed, the colour media display features a screen diagonal measuring 8.4 inches (21.3 cm) and has an even higher resolution. It also allows optional digital TV/radio reception, for example, and offers a host of other features including fast hard-disc navigation, automatic tailback avoidance via up-to-date and accurate Live Traffic Information, integrated WLAN hotspot functionality and the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system.

Musical enjoyment at concert hall level is possible with the optional Burmester® surround sound system. This has a 9-channel DSP amplifier, 13 speakers and a system output of 590 watts.

In addition to the standard functions such as Mercedes-Benz emergency call, Accident Recovery, breakdown assistance or after-sales service, Remote Online (standard with COMAND Online) offers numerous convenience features via the Mercedes me app or the Mercedes me portal, for example control of the auxiliary heating, locking and unlocking of the vehicle or the retrieval of various items of information, such as odometer reading, fuel level or range.

The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé will celebrate its world premiere on 28 September 2016 as part of the Paris Motor Show. The sales release follows on 6 October 2016, with the market launch beginning in December 2016.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé: At Home On- or Off-Road

The combination of multifunctional SUV and dynamic coupé world neatly fuses emotion with intelligence

The combination of multifunctional SUV and dynamic coupé world neatly fuses emotion with intelligence. With an exterior length of 4.73 metres, a height of 1.60 metres and a wheelbase of 2.87 metres, the GLC Coupé is dynamic and compact in appearance. This makes the coupé almost eight centimetres longer and some four centimetres lower than the multi-talented GLC, with which it shares its basic architecture. The GLC Coupé owes its distinct character to a characteristically coupé-esque, single-louvred diamond radiator grille and a restyled, dropping roof line. The A‑pillar is less steeply raked, while the continuation of the roof outline is lower, terminating in the elegantly flowing, muscular tail end characteristic of a coupé.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé

Perfect combination of design elements from two different worlds

The striking features of the front end are its dominant, steeply raked diamond radiator grille with a single louvre and integral star, short overhang and SUV‑inspired chromed underguard. The innovative headlamp concept, optionally in LED High Performance technology, sports the now characteristic Mercedes-Benz light signature. A striking injection of sports car genes is provided by the large lateral air inlets.

The harmony with which the intrinsically opposed design worlds of coupé and SUV have been reconciled is revealed by the side view of the 1.60‑metre-high GLC Coupé with its characteristic, stretched roof line of a sports coupé. The squat greenhouse blends in seamlessly with the side of the vehicle to underline its coupé character. The interplay between high beltline and wide shoulders results in proportions that lend the GLC Coupé its dynamic looks. This interaction is given added emphasis by the drawn-in waist between the dropping line and the lower, rearwards ascending light-catching contour.

A clear clue to the vehicle’s distinctive SUV heritage is given by the optionally available side running boards. Flush with the outer edge of the body, wide wheels up to a size of 50.8 centimetres (20 inches) together with ample ground clearance underpin the GLC Coupé’s sporty, dynamic ambitions on unpaved tracks and unsurfaced roads.

Tail end with athletic looks

The styling of the tail end gives added emphasis to the vehicle’s coupé genes. With its pronounced shoulders, muscular bumper design with integral exhaust tailpipe trims and underguard in the form of a diffuser, the wide tail end of the GLC Coupé underlines the vehicle’s athletic looks. This enables the coupé to hug the road. Narrow, split tail lights, a centrally positioned brand star and a sharp spoiler lip reflect a design that made its debut with the S-Class Coupé and which all Mercedes-Benz coupé models have since followed. Relocated to the lower section of the bumper, the number plate as well as the characteristic form of the rear window with its rounded upper area, are among the further stylistic features. The rear window dispenses with a wiper, as the airflow does not break away until after the spoiler lip, which means that water is unable to strike the rear window. Like the headlamps, the night design of the LED tail lights sports the hallmark light signature of Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé

Interior with characteristic coupé flair and high-grade ambience

Following the exterior design philosophy, the interior welcomes the occupants with characteristic coupé flair and a high-grade ambience. The design idiom combines sensual purity with dynamic sportiness while embodying a convincing interpretation of modern luxury. Distinctive stylistic elements of the GLC Coupé are the dashboard and the centre console with its flowing lines: a large, one-piece console panel below the semi-integrated media display performs a sweep from the centre air vents to the armrest. These clear, sensual lines give a feeling of spaciousness while conveying a puristic modernity.

The optionally available AMG Interior line provides a clear commitment to even greater dynamism and sportiness. This package includes, for example, sports seats with upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with the option of sports seats with bi-colour look leather upholstery.

Sport program: DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL or AIR BODY CONTROL

The new GLC Coupé comes as standard with sports suspension including DYNAMIC SELECT with the five transmission modes ECO, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and INDIVIDUAL. DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL sports suspension with steel springing and adjustable damping is optionally available. Also with this option, DYNAMIC SELECT allows the driver to adapt the individual character of the vehicle.

Uniquely in this market segment, the suspension can be equipped with fully supporting multi-chamber springing and electronically controlled, continuously adjustable damping. The AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension combines excellent driving stability and optimal comfort with sporty agility. Specific characteristics are preselected depending on the DYNAMIC SELECT settings. In SPORT and SPORT+ mode, the occupants feel as if they are sitting in a sports car with a high level of lateral dynamics due to the even tauter connection to the chassis, which is lowered by 15 millimetres. COMFORT mode makes for an especially comfortable ride with soft suspension. To ensure maximum possible driving safety also in this mode, the spring/damper forces are instantaneously adjusted, for example in case of a sudden evasive manoeuvre. Further benefits of the system include reduced roll when cornering, automatic load sensing and lowering of the load compartment sill by 4 centimetres for more convenient loading and unloading.

Another key parameter for the sporty characteristics of the GLC Coupé compared with the classic GLC SUV is the retuned Direct-Steer system, which, with 15.1:1 (GLC: 16.1:1), offers a more direct steering ratio together with even sportier characteristics of the power assistance in the SPORT and SPORT+ modes.

Key parameters for high energy efficiency

The design has also bestowed superlative aerodynamics on the new GLC Coupé. With a cd value of 0.31 and a drag area of 2.53 m2, the coupé clearly leads its segment with cd x A = 0.79. Apart from the vehicle’s streamlined basic form, this exceptional aerodynamic performance also results from a host of detail solutions, such as sealing of the radiator and headlamp surrounds, a radiator shutter and optimised underbody panelling.

Despite generous exterior dimensions and a long wheelbase – both of which benefit especially the occupants and the luggage compartment – as well as a full equipment configuration, the vehicle weighs in at just 1710 kilograms (GLC 250 4MATIC Coupé), which puts it among the leaders in this market segment. The main contributory factor in this is the all-new body, which features an intelligent mix of materials, comprising aluminium and high- to ultra-high-strength steels. Aluminium components additionally reduce the weight of the suspension, which also benefits ride comfort due to the attendant reduction in unsprung masses. The optional, fully supporting AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension features spring elements in lightweight yet robust glass-fibre-reinforced plastic, which reduce the system weight in comparison to conventional air suspensions. The use of the new compact transfer case as an add-on module and the 9G-TRONIC with its magnesium transmission housing results in a 12 kg weight reduction in comparison to the previous versions installed in other models.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé

Seven model variants, top-of-the-line model from Mercedes-AMG

The new GLC Coupé is provisionally available in seven engine variants: customers have the choice of three diesel drive systems, three petrol engines and a plug-in hybrid. The offering includes the four-cylinder diesel models GLC 220 d 4MATIC Coupé and GLC 250 d 4MATIC Coupé with outputs ranging from 125 kW (170 hp) to 150 kW (204 hp). In the 190 kW (258 hp) GLC 350 d 4MATIC Coupé with its V6 diesel engine, impressive performance with moderate consumption values are ensured. It goes without saying that all diesel models boast the latest SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment with AdBlue® injection and that they are certified in accordance with EU6.

Distinctive dynamism is promised by the petrol models GLC 250 4MATIC Coupé with 155 kW (211 hp) and GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé with 180 kW (245 hp). The particularly dynamic Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé has even more performance up its sleeve: this powerful top-of-the-line model comes with perfect on-road performance, individual and dynamic styling and an attractive equipment package. The V6 biturbo engine puts out 270 kW (367 hp), accelerating the coupé to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

With the GLC 350 e 4MATIC Coupé, Mercedes-Benz also offers a plug-in hybrid that combines agile all-wheel drive with extremely low fuel consumption and exhaust emissions: this 235 km/h mid-size SUV with a system output of 235 kW (320 hp) emits just 59-64 g of CO2/km, setting a new standard in its class. This part-time electric model has an all-electric1 and therefore emission-free range of up to 34 km, and can accelerate as required to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds thanks to the boost function.

The models at a glance:

  • GLC 220 d 4MATIC Coupé, diesel, 125 kW (170 hp)
  • GLC 250 d 4MATIC Coupé, diesel, 150 kW (204 hp)
  • GLC 350 d 4MATIC Coupé*, diesel, 190 kW (258 hp)
  • GLC 250 4MATIC Coupé, petrol, 155 kW (211 hp)
  • GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé, petrol, 180 kW (245 hp)
  • Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé*, petrol, 270 kW (367 hp)
  • GLC 350 e 4MATIC Coupé*, plug-in hybrid, 235 kW (320 hp)**

* from end of 2016; **system output

As different as the seven GLC Coupé models may appear at first glance, they are all characterised by high efficiency as well as compliance with the EU 6 emissions standard. Most models come with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, while, with the exception of the plug-in hybrid, all variants of the GLC Coupé are equipped with 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. The GLC 350 e 4MATIC Coupé uses the 7G‑TRONIC PLUS transmission, which was specially optimised for the needs of a hybrid vehicle.

Equipment configuration: comprehensive and individual

The new GLC Coupé impresses even in its standard equipment configuration, which includes light-alloy wheels of 45.7-centimetre diameter (18 inches), the Chrome package with visible exhaust tips, EASY-PACK tailgate, Audio 20 CD multimedia system, reversing camera, KEYLESS-GO starting function and upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather. Also included as standard are assistance systems such as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST and ESP® with Dynamic Cornering Assist. Comfort and safety can be significantly further enhanced by additional driver assistance systems.

Mercedes-Benz also offers a wide selection of optional packages for its new SUV Coupé. Customers can choose between the AMG Line for the interior and exterior, Night package, EXCLUSIVE Interior plus single- or two-tone designo interior. A visual as well as dynamic highlight comes in the guise of the AMG light-alloy wheels measuring 48.3 centimetres (19 inches) or 50.8 centimetres (20 inches) in diameter fitted with mixed-size tyres. The attractive light-alloy wheels are available in numerous design variants in conjunction with the AMG Exterior line. An optional sports exhaust system for the four-cylinder petrol engines reinforces the emotive sound experience.

However sporty and aesthetically appealing, the dynamic GLC Coupé also impresses with some practical features too. With a capacity of 491 to 1400 litres, the load compartment leads this market segment. And the availability of space in both front and rear puts the GLC Coupé on a par with the GLC in terms of comfort. Entrance height, shoulder room, elbow room and legroom are all identical.

Airbags, etc.: protection in an emergency – it goes without saying

In keeping with the Mercedes-Benz tradition, the body forms the foundation for exemplary crash safety. A high-strength safety passenger compartment forms the core of this concept. It is surrounded by specifically designed and crash-tested deformation zones, which ensure the best possible occupant safety by virtue of optimised force paths and a combination of die-cast aluminium components and ultra-high-strength materials.

In addition to 3-point safety belts with pyrotechnical and reversible belt tensioning and belt-force limitation for driver, front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include combined thorax/pelvis sidebags for driver and front passenger and an optimised windowbag extending over both seat rows, optional sidebags for the outer rear seats and a driver kneebag.

Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL Hydrogen

Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL hydrogen vehicle announced for 2017 reveal

Plans to introduce a hydrogen version of the Mercedes-Benz GLC crossover in the second half of 2017 have been revealed.

The disclosure was announced by head of R&D Thomas Weber during an interview with British magazine Autocar and the plan is to unveil the car in September 2017 during the Frankfurt Motor Show. It will reach dealerships in 2018 and according to Mercedes-Benz it will offer a maximum range of up to 373 miles (600 km), while a full recharge will take around three minutes.

Other details are scarce at the moment, but we do know the vehicle is going to feature a newly developed fuel cell stack that will be installed in the space where the combustion engine is positioned in the regular GLC (previously known as GLK).

It will likely be sold as the “GLC F-CELL” and is going to be offered only in select markets through a monthly lease program or with an outright purchase of around £50,000 (about $76,400 / €71,300).

As a refresher, rival company BMW recently announced its intentions to come out with its own hydrogen vehicle set to go on sale after the end of the decade. It will be a large sedan set to offer a maximum range of more than 435 miles (700 km) and will use fuel cell technology co-developed with Toyota.

First Official Photos and Details of the All-New Mercedes-Benz GLS

The GLS will be available to order from December 2015, with deliveries in in the US market from late-March 2016.

You love the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for it’s unmatched luxury and you covet the GL for it’s ample size and versatility.  With the all-new GLS, Mercedes-Benz gives you the best of both worlds, luxury and style that you will not find in any other SUV and space and towing capabilities that rival the best SUVs on the road.  The 2017 Mercedes GLS will easily become the top family vehicle on the market.

Like the GL before it, the new GLS is setting standards in the world of the SUV as it confirms its position as the “S-Class among SUVs.” The only full-fledged seven-seater in the European premium SUV segment boasts ample spaciousness and combines luxury with impressive levels of comfort, agile dynamics and best-in-class safety. Whether put to everyday use or venturing off the beaten track, the GLS meets all requirements effortlessly and comfortably. Compared with its predecessor, the new generation features improved efficiency, additional DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, improved air suspension system (AIRMATIC) with enhanced damping system (ADS), nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, state-of-the-art assistance systems and the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz telematics which includes internet access and remote-start capability. More power, more dynamism and more equipment are also offered by the new Mercedes- AMG GLS63. With a peak output of 577 hp, independent suspension and the revised AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, it represents the pinnacle of the GLS model line. Standard features on the GLS63 include AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes which provide optimum flexibility and a rear-biased AMG Performance all-wheel drive system. The GLS63 also shows strength of character with its updated AMG design elements and high- quality interior.

A new, dynamic exterior and revised, luxurious interior clearly underscore the impressive character of the GLS. With the 2017-model-year facelift, designers have adapted the full-size luxury SUV to the current Mercedes-Benz design idiom. On the exterior, focus has been placed on a redesign of the front end, while the rear has been modernized around the bumper and with full LED tail lamps. Eye-catching highlights in the interior include a newly designed instrument panel with Media Display, new 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, modified center console with touchpad and new trim options.

  • Width 84.3 in. w/ mirrors
  • Height 72.8 in.

The Sport exterior, available on the GLS550, provides a muscular appearance and consists of unique front and rear aprons, side running boards, side flaps painted in the vehicle color and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. Even more exclusivity is created with the Night package which is available in conjunction with this model’s equipment line.

On top of this there is a comprehensive range of new light-alloy wheels featuring a variety of designs.

Luxury liner with outstanding inner values

Accompanying the high-end exterior design quality is a revised interior which underscores the first-class standards of the GLS. Furthermore, up to seven passengers are able to enjoy an outstanding level of spaciousness. Like its predecessor, the new GLS boasts ample elbow and headroom in all three seat rows. With its diverse adjustment options, the center seat row enables a high degree of flexibility in the interior, including a cargo position for optimum use of the luggage compartment.

Other interior highlights include a new 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather and a newly designed instrument panel with color Media Display. Options available for the new GLS also include an air ionization system for even better interior air quality.

Individual highlights can be created in the GLS interior with the help of the wood/leather multifunction steering wheel, ambient lighting featuring three color shades or the wide range of generously proportioned trim elements on the instrument panel and door panels with coordinated retractable cup holder covers.

In the case of the designo Exclusive nappa leather package, the overall impression of refinement is further heightened by heated comfort seats in the front with upholstery in designo nappa leather as well as characteristic diamond quilting. A distinctively sporty note comes courtesy of the AMG Line interior. It is comprised of, for the first time for the GLS, sports seats in Exclusive nappa leather, a 3-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel in a black Exclusive nappa leather finish, graduated instrument dials in a Checkered flag look and brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs.

Maximum safety for seven passengers

The equipment level of the new GLS in the area of active safety underscores Mercedes-Benz’s high standards when it comes to taking the strain off the driver. Standard driver assistance systems include COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist and ATTENTION ASSIST. Other systems available as standard on the GLS include: PRE-SAFE® system, Brake Assist BAS, electronic all- wheel drive traction system 4ETS, ESP®, and cruise control.

The optional Driver Assistance Package further reduces the driver’s workload while enhancing safety for the passengers, with systems including DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross- Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Speed Limit Assist.

Optimum protection potential is provided by passive occupant protection systems together with “electronic crumple zones” of the assistance systems and intelligent body design. Adaptive, two-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, knee airbag for the driver and front passenger (combined thorax/pelvis airbags) and window airbags above all three seat rows are available.

Night-time vision is improved by the optionally available LED Intelligent Light System, new to the GLS, while adverse weather conditions resulting in impaired visibility are defused by MAGIC VISION CONTROL, the heated adaptive windscreen wiper system which provides optimum water distribution.

Efficient performance: the engine line-up in the GLS

All of the engines available on the new GLS provide better performance across the model line. The powerful GLS550 4MATIC with V8 biturbo engine featuring direct injection now generates 449 hp, some 20 hp more than the preceding model, and at a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft combines outstanding performance with the high level of motoring comfort of these engines. The 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine, also featuring direct injection, is used in the GLS450 4MATIC. This engine produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 rpm, and like all GLS models has an ECO start/stop function.

  • As the effortlessly superior top-of-the-range model in the series, the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 now has 577 horsepower, over 27 horsepower more than its predecessor. The peak torque of 561 lb-ft is now available from just 1,750 rpm.
  • Alongside the gas engine offerings, in the GLS350d 4MATIC offers a proven V6 diesel engine rated at 255 hp and with ample torque of 455 lb-ft.
  • At the launch of the new GLS generation, all versions will feature the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission as standard (except the Mercedes-AMG GLS63), optionally in combination with low-range gearbox and center differential lock.

Comprehensive stability: DYNAMIC SELECT, AIRMATIC with enhanced ADS and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

With DYNAMIC SELECT, the new GLS provides up to six transmission modes. In addition to the settings COMFORT, SLIPPERY and SPORT, with the DYNAMIC SELECT Controller in the center console, the driver can additionally choose INDIVIDUAL or an OFF-ROAD mode. If the GLS model is equipped with the optional Off-Road Engineering package, OFF-ROAD+ mode is also available. With this, the low-range gearbox and center differential lock intervene if necessary in order to ensure a high degree of drivability in demanding off-road terrain. This is further boosted by the extended functions of the AIRMATIC air suspension with raised ride heights for a ground clearance of up to 12.5 inches (306 mm) and a fording depth of up to 23.6 inches (600 mm).

On the GLS63, the DYNAMIC SELECT system receives the AMG treatment with the inclusion of a SPORT+ mode in place of the OFF-ROAD mode available on other models.

In addition to several ground-breaking powertrain configurations, the retuned AIRMATIC air suspension with enhanced ADS damping characteristics guarantees extremely stable driving, altering dampening depending on the current DYNAMIC SELECT mode. SPORT focuses on the greatest possible lateral dynamics with the best possible ride quality. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride quality with the best possible dynamics.

The optional active roll stabilization ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM uses active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axle and reduces the roll angle of the body during cornering. Better driving comfort when cornering and driving off-road are also part of the advantages of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM.

GLE Coupe World Premiere

Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle – each with its own distinct style – to make a new model, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle – each with its own distinct style – to make a new model, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. The sporty nature of a coupe dominates, imbued with the striking characteristics of a robust SUV. In addition to convincing on-road vehicle dynamics, the GLE Coupe looks impressive as well. With its flowing side contour, elongated and low greenhouse, striking radiator grille with central chrome louvre and rear end design, the GLE Coupe cites styling features typical of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. In the U.S. market, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe features a biturbo V6 engine that produces 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the generous amount of standard equipment, the DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the Sports Direct-Steer system and the driver assistance systems typical of the brand, the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe comes standard with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive.

The GLE Coupe is the new addition to the successful portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coupes. Alongside the classic, two-door C, E and S-Class models and the four-door CLS- and CLA-Class coupes, the new coupe displays a highly individual interpretation of the physiognomy and light-footed approach typical of this family of vehicles. For example, the GLE Coupe displays attributes typical of coupes such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, while also exuding the self-assured presence, versatility and ruggedness of an SUV.

DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system: highly variable – from racy and sporty to poised and comfortable

The GLE Coupe feels like a true sports coupe. Despite the similarity to an SUV with its raised seating position and expansive all-round view, the occupants are led to believe that they are in sports rather than off-road mode. The sound is reminiscent of powerful sports cars, while the spontaneous and direct response to all commands is guaranteed to get your pulse racing. On the other hand, it can also create a superior feeling of calm, coupled with unshakeably serene driving dynamics. These two different worlds can normally only be experienced in two separate vehicles – an agile, thoroughbred sports coupe and an easy-going, comfortable SUV. But the new GLE Coupe is different: DYNAMIC SELECT enables a wide spread in the driving dynamics and combines these diametrical worlds of experience in a single vehicle – an automobile premiere.

GLE 450 AMG

GLE 450 AMG

GLE 450 AMG – the first AMG sports model

The balancing act between extremely sporty yet still comfortable has been mastered especially well in the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe. As the first AMG sports model, the V6 top-of-the-range GLE Coupe enables an attractive entry to the world of the sports car and performance brand.

“The GLE 450 AMG Coupe is our first sports model, and further highly emotional and performance-oriented models will follow in the near future. The new product line from Mercedes-AMG has allowed us to make true sports car technology and the fascination of motorsports more accessible,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “Every vehicle from Affalterbach honors the brand promise of Driving Performance.”

The new AMG sports models display impressive product substance and honor the promise of sports performance with a higher output class, standard all-wheel drive and also sophisticated chassis solutions. The variable dynamic control system assigns fundamentally different characteristics to the five transmission modes of INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+, which the driver is able to select using a rotary control on the center console. The system networks all the control systems, generating different sets of parameters. The names speak for themselves: SPORT and SPORT+ turn the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe into a sporty, dynamic vehicle with pronounced longitudinal and lateral dynamics. COMFORT is the opposite end of the spectrum. Here the emphasis is on the refined parameters so typical of classic Mercedes-Benz sedans, for relaxed, effortless cruising with the greatest possible energy efficiency. SLIPPERY optimizes the handling on surfaces with low friction coefficients such as snow or ice. In addition, INDIVIDUAL mode enables the driver to program and store personal preferences in the individual control strategies, regardless of the engine variant.

In the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe, DYNAMIC SELECT not only modulates the “hard skills” such as the chassis and suspension, steering or powertrain. It is also possible to experience the selected mode more intensively on an emotional level because various “soft skills” such as the engine sound, instruments or dynamic control of the driving lights also vary. To this end, the nature of the various displays on the COMAND screen and in the cockpit changes according to the selected transmission mode. At the same time, the active light function of the all-LED headlamps respond more spontaneously and the engine produces the whole range of sounds from sporty and dominant to poised and restrained:

If the driver selects COMFORT mode, the displays take on lesser importance and, like the engine, the dial instruments such as the rev counter show a relaxed response to the driver’s commands. In combination with the comfort-oriented control of the powertrain and suspension, the result is a feel-good ambience at the level of a sedan. The engine sound is reduced to a pleasant timbre, and the feedback from the road surface and surroundings is considerably quieter in the interior.

Things are very different when SPORT+ mode is selected. The character changes immediately, the gear changes performed by the 9G-TRONIC are acoustically accentuated, especially when downshifting with the double-declutch function, and the cockpit instruments respond faster and more “sharply”. The large central display visualizes the longitudinal and lateral acceleration plus the steering angle with a photo-realistic motorsports graphic. The engine sound is powerful and acoustically underscores the sports mode. This setting removes any doubt: the GLE Coupe is a lively sports model of the highest order, and treats its occupants to a compelling world of experience.

A perfect combination: 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission

In the new GLE Coupe, the developers were able to show the possibilities of the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission in an all-wheel drive coupe with a longitudinal drive configuration. Depending on the mode selected for the DYNAMIC SELECT variable dynamic handling control system, the 9G-TRONIC impresses with great agility and responsiveness or poised serenity. It offers an impressively high shift speed and perfect transitions for energetic sprinting as well as gentle, barely perceptible gear changes for enjoyable cruising.

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive always goes hand in hand with safe, harmonious and sporty handling. The sporty GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe offers enhanced agility and more pronounced dynamics around the car’s vertical axis with a torque split of 40:60. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes SPORT and SPORT+ deliver superior longitudinal agility and lateral dynamics – specifically as a result of the perfect interplay between the modified driving dynamics control systems ASR, ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist, the electronic traction system 4ETS and the brake control system ADAPTIVE BRAKE.

Stability pact: AIRMATIC with ADS Plus, Sports Direct-Steer and ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

In addition to the ground-breaking powertrain configuration, the newly designed AIRMATIC air suspension – available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus – guarantees extremely stable driving. The damping system changes its area of emphasis depending on the preselected DYNAMIC SELECT mode. SPORT+ focuses on the greatest possible lateral dynamics with the best possible ride comfort. Conversely, COMFORT mode enables maximum ride comfort with the best possible dynamics.

The current operating conditions are detected via a steering angle sensor, four turning angle sensors and the driving speed from the ESP® signal and the brake pedal switch. The control unit uses these signals for infinitely variable adjustment of the current damping force required for each individual wheel.

The ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM with active roll stabilization is also part of the special sports systems that are activated when the driver selects SPORT or SPORT+. At the same time, the active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles raise the comfort to sedan level and compensate for even heavy, one-sided excitation – for example when driving over potholes. In combination with the newly configured, degressive Sports Direct-Steer system, whose steering ratio is very direct at 17.4:1, and the compact sports steering wheel, the handling is outstanding in all operating conditions – whether manoeuvring in the city, at high speeds on the freeway, or with a swift style of driving on winding mountain passes.

Alongside the appealing design, the exceptional suspension, drive technology and assistance systems familiar from the C, E and S-Class, the GLE Coupe is also equipped with numerous standard or optional equipment details and packages to further enrich the experience.

The chrome-effect shoulderline trim strips and the simulated underguards at the front and rear lend the coupe additional exclusiveness alongside the twin-pipe exhaust system with chrome-plated tailpipe trim. Green-tinted, heat-insulating glass reduces the glare of the sun in the summer, and LED technology is featured in the headlamps, daytime driving lights, rear lights and third brake light.

The DYNAMIC SELECT dynamic handling control system, the tailgate with power opening and closing, and the reversing camera with dynamic guide lines in the display are standard features. Additional active handling safety is provided by ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist and Crosswind Assist, as well as COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. The GLE Coupe is also equipped as standard with the brake system BAS Plus, optionally available with Cross-Traffic Assist.

The GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is a particularly sporty choice. The V6 biturbo engine offers an output of 362 hp and 384 lb-ft from 1,400 rpm to deliver performance akin to a sports car. The DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode SPORT+ is also always available.

The standard equipment here is upgraded with features such as special AMG bodystyling, which includes a specific front and rear apron, a rear spoiler lip painted in the vehicle color and 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with tires of size 275/45 R 21 (front) and 315/40 R 21 (rear). In addition, 22-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tires are optionally available. Excellent traction levels are guaranteed by the impressive tires of size 285/40 R 22 (front) and 325/35 R 22 (rear). The standard scope of equipment here includes the AIRMATIC package including air suspension and infinitely variable adaptive damping system (ADS Plus) with level control and automatic lowering function at higher speeds.

Successful design synthesis of Coupe and SUV elements

Sensuality and clarity are the two poles that have determined the design idiom of the Mercedes-Benz brand for almost 130 years and have their origin in the nature of the two inventors of the automobile, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. Carl Benz was more rationally oriented in his behaviour, whereas Gottlieb Daimler was driven more by his passion. The new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe demonstrates almost ideally how this bridge between intelligence and emotion, between tradition and modernity, blends into an attractive symbiosis.

The GLE Coupe not only skilfully embodies the firmly embedded principles of Mercedes-Benz design, but also focuses on the essential features of two entirely different automobile genres. On the one hand, the youngest member of the GLE family bears the decisive, essential stylistic feature of all modern Mercedes-Benz coupes: it combines sheer sportiness with a high-level aesthetic and sensual demand for modern luxury. At the same time, elements of the classic SUV are recognizable. With muscular wings, large wheel arches, tires of up to 22 inches and also the high belt line and the generous ground clearance, this model takes the perception of a large, four-door coupe to the next level.

The extreme proportions with superior aesthetics of the new GLE Coupe have emerged from this stylistic gene pool. This is particularly due to the extremely exciting relationship between the low greenhouse and striking body; the silhouette signals dynamism and agility. The upright sports grille with single louvre, framed by three-dimensionally designed all-LED headlamps, is the major feature of the front end with its short, stylish overhang. The forward-sloping hood with its typical Mercedes power domes underscores the membership of the GLE Coupe in the line-up of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. A discreet reference to the SUV genes of the vehicle is provided by the harmoniously integrated, illuminated running boards, a typical feature of classic SUVs or off-roaders that is available as an option.

The coupe-like nature is also emphasized by the design of the rear end with its obvious elements of the design line first presented with the S-Class Coupe. The styling characteristics of this include the slim band of rear lights with their three-dimensional look, the wide chrome insert fitted above and the registration plate now incorporated into the rear bumper. Another feature that has distinguished the large coupe models from Mercedes-Benz for generations is the typical shape of the rear window which is rounded off at the top. A discreet SUV reference is made by the chrome-plated underride guard in the front and rear, here with the integrated twin tailpipe trim elements of the exhaust system.

The attractive sports seats and the compact sports steering wheel, as well as the infotainment elements familiar from the C, E and S-Class initially catch your eye in the interior. The information display, which is not entirely free-standing but partially integrated into the instrument panel, attracts attention and is fitted in an optimum ergonomic position. The center air vents, with a high-grade silver shadow frame similar to the outer vents, are positioned next to the display. The head unit has the same appearance to underline the homogeneity of the interior. The center console houses the COMAND controller with the touchpad fitted above in an optimum ergonomic position. The equipment and appointments in M-B Tex and the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium are also impressive.

The interior of the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is an impressive sight with AMG sports seats and the black nappa leather AMG sports steering wheel in 3-spoke design as well as the trim elements in light longitudinal-grain aluminium and the sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. AMG carbon-fiber trim and piano lacquer enhance the appearance of the interior as an additional option.

Attractive equipment packages and individual options

Popular equipment details are also combined in attractive packages for the GLE Coupe. The Driving Assistance package includes DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. The Parking package with 360° camera and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC guarantees an excellent overview and problem-free manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces. Night-time vision is improved by the LED Intelligent Light System which is a standard feature on all models; adverse weather conditions with impaired view are defused by MAGIC VISION CONTROL – the heated, adaptive windscreen wiper system.

The extremely large interior for a coupe provides space for up to five people. The rear seat bench in the GLE Coupe is even the widest in its class. Drivers who order the optional large panoramic glass roof are rewarded with an even greater feeling of spaciousness for all the passengers. With a maximum of over 58 cubic feet, the coupe also offers the largest luggage compartment in its class and just happens to hold the world record for luggage compartments in coupes.

COMAND offers perfect infotainment with an 8-inch TFT display and intuitive touchpad. The system also includes a DVD player. If required, the customer can equip COMAND Online with a Rear Seat Entertainment System with remote control or Bang & Olufsen BeoSound sound system.

Well worth a look: color and material combinations for the GLE Coupe

There are almost limitless possibilities when it comes to customization of the GLE Coupe, and the equipment packages again play an important role. A Night package is available, in which the louvre in the radiator grille and the exterior mirror housings are in high-gloss black. At the same time, the wide selection of solid and metallic paints and the almost limitless possibilities for interior design increase the potential for individual customization. A total of 11 paint finishes are available, of which seven are metallic colours and two are special paint finishes with special-effect pigments in designo diamond white or designo hyacinth red metallic.

The interior radiates modern luxury and can be given a design ranging from ambitious and sporty to classic and elegant, depending on personal taste. The scope here ranges from single-tone black interior appointments to various combinations in which black is used with ginger beige, crystal grey, saddle brown or porcelain. The interior of the GLE Coupe is particularly impressive in two-tone designo exclusive nappa leather in porcelain/black. The designo Exclusive nappa leather option brings even more luxury: seats with diamond-pattern stitching, instrument panel and door panelling in designo leather and the black DINAMICA roof liner provide for even more exclusive travel.

Depending on personal preference, the trim elements shine in light longitudinal-grain aluminium, brown open-pore ash wood, brown eucalyptus wood, dark-graphite poplar wood or black AMG carbon fiber/piano lacquer.

Connect four

The Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC success story began in 1985. The all-wheel drive presented in an E-Class was the first automatically controlled drive system in a premium vehicle. The customer was able to choose between six different models. Nowadays, around 30 years later, the portfolio of passenger cars with all-wheel drive has grown to include more than 70 models in 18 model series. From the C to the G-Class, each model receives a tailored 4MATIC solution – to match each different vehicle character.

The AMG sports models such as the GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe receive a performance-oriented 4MATIC drive system which sends the drive torque more towards the rear axle – unlike in the standard model. This distinctly rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment.

“G” to the fore: the new SUV nomenclature

The premiere of the GLE Coupe restructures the successful SUV range from Mercedes-Benz. The system centers around the five core model series, A, B, C, E and S, which will continue to be used to provide orientation for our customers. In the case of the model designations for the SUVs, in a tribute to the legendary G-Class, all SUV models will in future have the first two letters “GL” in their name. The “G” here denotes the car’s lineage. The “L” is a letter that appears time and time again over the history of Mercedes-Benz: it is a linking letter that makes the model designations easier to remember and easier to pronounce; one that is familiar from the legendary SL, for example, or from the more recent CLS and CLA. It is followed by the third letter, which indicates the relationship to the relevant core model series.

In specific terms:

GLA SUV in the A-Class segment

GLC SUV in the C-Class segment; formerly GLK

GLE SUV in the E-Class segment; formerly M-Class

GLE Coupé SUV in the E-Class Coupé segment

GLS SUV in the S-Class segment; formerly GL

G unchanged

The different types of engine are indicated by a lower-case letter.

Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG Coupe Spied

Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG Coupe will go head-to-head with the BMW X6

The second batch of spy photos with the SUV that will likely be dubbed the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG Coupe as the star have made their way on the web.  The AMG SUV will likely come out for 2016 as a competitor for the X6.

Check the gallery below for a look at the spy photos.

Hidden under all the camo in the spy photos is a more aggressive body kit and a quad exhaust arrangement in typical AMG fashion.

The  will ride on the same platform as the M-Class but will boast a stiffer suspension setup along with beefier alloy wheels. Chances are under the hood AMG’s engineers will install a 5.5-liter V8 twin-turbo from the ML 63 AMG which will churn 525 PS (386 kW) and 516 lb-ft (699 Nm) in standard guise and 558 PS (410 kW) and 560 lb-ft (758 Nm) in what will probably be an S-Model.

Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 CDI

If you want to get the fashionable Mercedes GLA look for less cash, then this entry-level 200 CDI could be the car for you

If you want to get the fashionable Mercedes GLA look for less cash, then this entry-level 200 CDI could be the car for you. Starting at £25,850, the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI boasts a price as eye-catching as its rugged styling.

The Mercedes GLA 200 CDI gets the same pumped-up hatchback styling as more expensive models, such as raised suspension, aluminium roof rails, plus extra chrome trim. The dash is also carried over pretty much unchanged from the Mercedes A-Class. Sadly, though, the upmarket air is shattered the moment the 2.1-litre diesel clatters into life.

Matters don’t improve on the move either, because the 134bhp unit underneath the bonnet of the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI feels sluggish off the line and is thrashy when extended.

The optional £1,450 seven-speed box fitted to the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI we tested provided smooth and early upshifts, which helped to avoid the worst of the initial mechanical racket. The Mercedes GLA 200 CDI gets a six-speed manual is standard, but it suffers from a springy and vague shift action.

Once up to a steady cruising speed, the engine in the Mercedes GLA 200 CDI subsides to a background hum, while wind and road noise are kept well in check. The Mercedes rides better than the A-Class it’s based on, too – although it fidgets a little on the motorway.

The small side windows on the Mercedes GLA make the cabin feel a little claustrophobic, but there’s decent head and legroom for those sitting in the back. Better still, there’s plenty of useful storage, including a number of lidded cubbies in the centre console. The deep boot also boasts a cavernous 481-litre capacity.

As with other models in the Mercedes GLA range the front-wheel-drive 200 CDI features safe and predictable handling. The steering is precise, there plenty of grip and decent body control. Yet despite its raised ride height, the Mercedes doesn’t give the same commanding view of the road as rivals such as the Range Rover Evoque and Audi Q3.

Key specs

  • Price: From £23,300
  • Engine: 2.1-litre 4cyl turbodiesel
  • Power: 134bhp
  • Transmission: Seven-speed twin-clutch
 auto, front-wheel drive

Verdict:

The Mercedes GLA 200 CDI is the weakest model in the GLA line-up. Sure, it’s well priced, boasts upmarket looks and a classy cabin. Plus it’s backed by low CO2 emissions and strong claimed fuel returns, but it’s undermined by a coarse and sluggish engine. And like other versions of the Mercedes GLA, the 200 CDI is more of a jacked-up hatchback than a proper SUV.

Throwback Thursday: The Mercedes-Benz GLK At SEMA: The RENNTech GLK Pikes Peak Rally Racer

RENNtech's GLK was inspired by the winged, unlimited-class rally cars of the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Inspired by the winged, unlimited-class rally cars of the famed Pikes Peak Hill Climb, RENNtech set about creating a GLK that could master the pack and leave the rest chewing gravel. But, this wild GLK has a few surprises beneath its menacing exterior.

Hybrid powertrains are generally associated with fuel efficiency and lower emissions. However, RENNtech has taken one more benefit of the hybrid principle to turn the GLK into a formidable performer. By combining an electric motor in parallel with the 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine, RENNtech has been able to capture the impressive torque that characterises electric motor drives, adding 54 Nm to enhance the GLK’s performance off-the-line and out of corners. Using a hybrid drive in a hill climb setting has the added advantage of maintaining thrust at higher altitudes, when internal combustion engines – which depend on ambient air – start to wheeze.

The specialist Mercedes tuning company has also worked its magic on the base 3.5 litre V6 unit, using components from the latest Mercedes-Benz high-performance 3.5 litre V6 Sport engine. These include a special intake manifold, cams and cylinder heads, to which RENNtech has added its own long-tube headers, composite air intake and RENNtech ECU software. Engine output is up to approximately 350 hp, augmented further by the electric motor from the hybrid drive.

The additional 72 volt drive is run by 12 volt plug-in batteries. RENNtech is currently working on a nickel-hydride solution with regenerative charging for additional range.

“The GLK Rally Racer Hybrid is a fully-functioning test bed,” explains Hartmut Feyhl, founder and President of RENNtech. “We will use this vehicle as a proof-of-concept, which we will develop and enhance throughout next year.”

“With the Rally Racer, we have really increased the car’s performance,” continues Feyhl. “Together with the more aggressive, sporting look, we have created a powerful and exciting package.”

It is also worth noting that, despite the performance enhancements, RENNtech has succeeded in improving the fuel economy of the Rally Racer compared with the original version, “proving that high performance and efficiency can coexist,” adds Feyhl.

Bearing in mind that the Rally Racer is built for speed on tough terrain, RENNtech opted to forego creature comforts, cutting the weight of the standard GLK by removing most of the sound insulation and replacing the Mercedes-Benz seats with lightweight carbon-fibre buckets. Engineers also fitted a full roll cage and moved several components towards the rear of the vehicle to create an almost perfect 50:50 front/rear weight distribution for improved handling on tight, demanding rally stages.

Another significant handling modification comes from the custom coil-over suspension. Made to RENNtech specifications by suspension supplier KW, the package allows for adjustments in height, rake, damping rate, camber and toe-in.

Extra stopping power is provided for the Rally Racer courtesy of an in-house RENNtech brake combo featuring massive 412mm, 2-piece rotors with 8-piston callipers at the front, and 356mm discs grabbed by 4-pot callipers at the rear.

Lightweight 20 inch 3-piece, 5-spoke RENNtech wheels in a “Sniper Gray” anthracite finish, clad in NT05 275/40 20 Nitto rubber at the front and NT05 315/35 20 at the rear, fill the prominent wheel flares that underscore this GLK’s performance potential.

Although extensive exterior revisions were made to accommodate the larger wheels and brakes and to widen the track, the focus of bodyshell modifications was enhanced aerodynamic efficiency. RENNtech used the latest in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to develop the package. The front splitter, rear diffuser and lower side skirts help direct airflow underneath the GLK Rally Racer to reduce drag and produce added downforce, while improving high speed stability at the rear. The rear wing elements also serve an important aerodynamic purpose and add emphasis to the aggressive edginess of the original GLK design. From a visual perspective, RENNtech engineers successfully melded their aerodynamic modifications with the flared wheel arches to create a powerful side line that highlights the dynamic thrust of the Rally Racer.

“The GLK was a great starting point for this project,” says Hartmut Feyhl, “It has excellent underpinnings for performance tuning and I think the overall look really suits it.”

“The GLK gave us a great deal of scope for bringing together form and function. For the RENNtech GLK, performance may have been the primary goal, but it also looks the part,” he adds.

OFFICIAL REVEAL: Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV Revealed

Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the Concept Coupe SUV at Beijing Motor Show and it is every bit as sexy as we expected

After leaked photos and videos emerged, Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the Concept Coupe SUV at Beijing Motor Show and it is every bit as sexy as we expected.  Short on time, skip straight to the extensive photo gallery below for a 360 degree look at the Mercedes-Benz that will obliterate go head-to-head with the upcoming BMW X6.

This extremely sporty study impresses as a typical representative of the long-standing coupé tradition at Mercedes-Benz, with a flowing side line, stretched greenhouse and striking radiator grille with central chrome louvre. At the same time the Concept Coupé SUV stands out with its muscular wings, large wheel arches, imposing 22-inch wheels, high beltline and generous ground clearance. Its dynamic handling on the road is also on a superior level. Not only thanks to air suspension, but also to the networking of the powertrain, suspension and interior that it realises. The variable dynamic control system “Dynamic Select Control” provides four fundamentally different transmission modes and an individually programmable setup.

“Sensual as a coupé – visionary as an SUV,” is the succinct choice of words used by Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, to describe the physiognomy of the Concept Coupé SUV. The four-door, all-wheel drive Coupé has a length of almost five metres, and an imposing width of a good two metres thanks to its broad shoulders and flared wheel arches. At the same time it has a modest height of around 1.75 metres, exhibiting the flat, extended roofline that is typical of a sports coupé. “The Concept Coupé SUV stands out thanks to its extreme proportions and in doing so interprets our hallmark Mercedes coupé design idiom perfectly. With its superior sportiness it conveys a sense of modern luxury and aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity”, continues Gorden Wagener. Like the recessed door handles, frameless side windows blend perfectly into the vehicle flanks to accentuate the coupé-like character even

further. In line with a tradition and like all recent study vehicles, the Concept Coupé SUV is painted in the “ALU-BEAM” paint finish, which is also reminiscent of the technically ground-breaking Silver Arrows of the 1930s and 1950s.

The upright sports grille with single louvre, framed by the three-dimensionally designed modern, all-LED Multibeam headlamps, is the major feature of the front end with its short, stylish overhang. Soft cubes dominate the grille insert, and the forward-sloping bonnet with its typical Mercedes power domes underlines the membership of the Concept Coupé SUV in the line-up of particularly sporty Mercedes-Benz models. A discreet reference to the SUV genes of this study is provided by the harmoniously integrated, illuminated side sills, which are reminiscent of the running boards found on classic SUVs or off-roaders. Indicators have always pointed the way in the best sense of the word, however in the Concept Coupé SUV they take on a new form. The direction indicators operate with a moving digital light band whose lighting elements light up sequentially from inside to outside, indicating the change in direction in two ways.

Elegant rear end: in the style of the S-Class Coupé

The coupé-like nature of the Concept Coupé SUV is also emphasised by the design of the rear end with its obvious elements of the design line first presented with the S-Class Coupé, which will be followed by all coupé models from Mercedes-Benz in future. The styling characteristics of this include the slim band of rear lights with their ruby-like, three-dimensional look and the registration plate now incorporated into the rear bumper. Another feature that has for generations distinguished the large coupé models from Mercedes-Benz is the typical shape of the rear window which is rounded off at the top. A discreet SUV reference is made by the simulated underguard into which the tailpipes of the dual-flow exhaust system are integrated. Polished aluminium predominates here, as on the integral door handles, the side sills, the front air intakes and the edging of the greenhouse.

Wide, flush-fitted 22-inch wheels with tyres in size 305/45 R 22 make the vehicle sit squarely on the road, and leave no doubt about the passion of the Concept Coupé SUV: at very first glance this trailblazing study signals its sporty, dynamic ambitions.

Haute Couture: the Mercedes-Benz coupé range

Developing and creating new model families and vehicle classes has traditionally been one of the strengths of Mercedes-Benz, the inventor of the automobile. This is particularly obvious in the history of its coupés, and most especially in the very recent past. Models such as the four-door Coupés or the Shooting Brakes in the CLS-Class have not only created completely new vehicle classes, but have also had a lasting influence on the model policies of different manufacturers, found numerous imitators and proved to be an outstanding sales success. The same can be said of the CLA-Class, which has been able to transfer the success of the CLS into the compact class and is also extraordinarily popular with customers. With the Concept Coupé SUV, Mercedes-Benz is now taking a similar approach. The study follows this coupé theme within the SUV sector consistently and demonstrates how a four-door, all-wheel drive series production coupé might look.

Concept Coupé SUV – pilot project for new SUV worlds

As a compact all-rounder, the GLA has already translated the suggestion of a coupé-like design idiom into an SUV format, thereby giving indications of a new SUV line from Mercedes-Benz which the Concept Coupé SUV now fully brings to perfection. With this concept car, Mercedes-Benz is announcing the possible expansion of the previously uniform SUV off-roader family:

The Concept Coupé SUV illustrates the possibilities of a more sporty and dynamic “on-road line”.

The model families of the GLA, GLK, M, GL and G-Class stand for a versatile and superior “off-road line”.

This presents customers with definite advantages, as they are able to order a vehicle specifically meeting their needs and wishes.

The wide body aero kit from Expression Motorsport is now available for the 2014 M-Class, the ML63 and for standard models.

The kit has been designed to enhance not only the SUV’s racing aesthetics but also the performance on the track. It incorporates larger openings in the front bumper  to allow for quicker and better engine cooling. Carbon fiber inserts and a carbon fiber front spoiler lip give the design a more aggressive, racing look. Keeping the racing theme, the front bumper  features LED running light as well as a set of fender flares (10 pieces ) with air intakes that allows you to mount wider wheels in 21 or 23″.  And lastly, to achieve the overall aggressive look, a lowered suspension and carbon fiber rear diffuser with F1 brake light combined with the double twin tip exhaust.

First Spy Photos of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

First facelifted photos of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class have emerged

The most current-generation M-CLass (W166) went into production in 2011 and now it seems Mercedes has begun facelifting the M-Class.

The sneaky photogs over at GMotors spied the M-Class facelift prototype testing in South Germany with a black and white camouglage. Though the front is heavily disguised, which may mean we’ll see major changes up front.

The camouflage looks like it may be covering a revised bonnet, new headlights, new grille and new bumper. The front grille already reveals little of the new frame.

The rear looks identical to the current model, though we can expect new exhaust tips and even new light graphics there.

Stay tuned as more photos emerge.

Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6 Towers over Lamborghini Murcielago SV

We compare the Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 to the Lamborghini Murcielago SV

A massive Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 was spotted towering over a Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce  at the Borderrun last weekend in the Netherlands.  The rare sighting of the G63 AMG 6×6 and the Murcielago SV left us wanting a comparison of the two very different yet very badass cars.

The G-Class Six Wheeler tips the scales at 8,487 lbs while the Lamborghini seems like a child’s toy at a mere 3,450 lbs in comparison. The massive differences don’t stop their, the G63 AMG 6×6 (87″) is almost twice as tall as the Murcielago (44.6″).

The real comparison comes what moves these beasts. Under the hood of the Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6 is a V8 5.5 liter engine with 544 HP (400 kW) and a massive 758 Nm (560 lb ft) of torque.  But, don’t feel bad for the Lamborghini Murcielago SV in this case, while coming in small in other areas the V12 6.5 liter engine is capable of outputting 670 HP (493 kW) and 660 Nm (487 lb ft) of torque.

The price on the Mercedes 6×6 is as large as the SUV itself with a starting price of around $622k while the departed Lamborghini was fetching a starting price of around $450k.
