Mercedes-Benz At The 2009 IAA: The Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing

The 63rd International Motor Show kicked off in Frankfurt, Germany today, and with it came the debut of the Mercedes SLS AMG

Automotive fascination and high tech of the highest order – these are the characteristics embodied by the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The super sports car boasts a purist design, consistent lightweight design, superior driving dynamics and exemplary safety.

The new super sports car from Mercedes-Benz and AMG dazzles with its unparalleled technology package: an aluminium space-frame bodyshell with gullwing doors; an AMG 6.3-litre, front-mid V8 engine with 420 kW/571 hp peak output, 650 Nm of torque, and dry sump lubrication; seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration; and sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbones. It’s a unique combination that guarantees supreme driving dynamics. The car’s ideal weight distribution between the front and rear axles (47 to 53 percent respectively), its low centre of gravity and DIN kerb weight of 1,620 kilograms emphasize the outstanding sports car concept. The Gullwing model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 317 km/h (electronically limited). The fuel consumption of 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres (combined) is best-in-class (all values provisional).

Design: Purist, distinctive, and passionate

The purist design of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG dazzles with its passionate sportiness and reinterprets the breathtaking design of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. The stylistic highlight is without a doubt the gullwing doors, which impart the SLS AMG with incomparable charisma. The long bonnet, the low greenhouse positioned far back, and the short rear with the extendable rear spoiler symbolise dynamics, as do the long wheelbase, the wide track, and the large wheels. It is not just the gullwing doors that awaken reminiscences of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. The wide radiator grille with the large Mercedes star, the wing-like cross fin on the bonnet and the vehicle flanks are also reminiscent of the legendary sports car.

Aviation engineering provided the inspiration to the Mercedes-Benz designers for the interior. The characteristic styling feature is the dashboard, whose powerful and dramatic wing-shape makes for an impression of width. The four prominent dashboard air vents with their adjustable, cruciform nozzles are reminiscent of a jet’s engines. The elongated centre console made of solid matt metal also takes up the plane cockpit theme. Among other things, the centre console incorporates the AMG DRIVE UNIT, which enables SLS owners to customise their vehicle set-up. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is operated by means of the E-SELECT lever, which resembles a jet’s thrust control. Despite the low seating position typical of a sports car, the wide opening gullwing doors ensure easy entry and exit. The gullwing doors require less room to open than do conventional coupe doors and can be completely opened in standard sized garages.

Aluminium space frame for light weight and highest strength

The SLS is taking a new approach in its body concept. For the first time ever, Mercedes-Benz and AMG are presenting an automobile, whose chassis and body are made of aluminium. This leads to significant weight savings compared to the traditional steel construction, as shown by the car’s DIN kerb weight of only 1,620 kilograms. The newly developed aluminium space-frame bodyshell combines intelligent, lightweight design with high strength – and thus benefits the excellent handling dynamics. The aluminium space frame is 45 per cent aluminium profiles, 31 per cent aluminium panelling, 20 per cent cast aluminium and four per cent steel. The use of ultra high-tensile, hot-rolled steel in the A-pillars provides a further increase in occupant safety. The shell weighs 241 kilograms – an absolute peak value in the super sports car segment. The highest possible degree of passive safety is guaranteed for the occupants by the vehicle’s standard equipment, which includes three-point seatbelts, seat-belt tensioners, belt force limiters, and eight airbags.

Further-developed AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with an output of 420 kW/571 hp

The heart of the SLS is a powerful eight-cylinder engine with dry sump lubrication. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 produces 420 kW/571 hp at 6,800 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4,750 rpm. The SLS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 317 km/h (all figures are preliminary). The SLS AMG consumes 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres (combined, preliminary figure). Efficiency-enhancement measures include not only the LDS cylinder bore linings but also a need-based fuel delivery and the recovery of braking energy.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine delivers its power to the rear axle via a dual-clutch transmission permanently connected to the engine housing via a torque tube. A carbon shaft rotates at engine speed inside the torque tube. Power transfer is via the new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed sports transmission. This dual-clutch transmission boasts fast gear changes with no interruption of tractive force and offers four driving modes. The mechanical differential lock guarantees optimum traction.

Sophisticated chassis layout with double-wishbone suspension

All four wheels are guided on dual A-arms with track rod. The A-arms, the steering knuckles and hub carriers at the front and rear axles are made of aluminium. The Gullwing model comes with a 3-stage ESP® as standard. The AMG high-performance brake system with composite brake discs on the front axle ensures short braking distances. Even better braking performance is offered by the optional ceramic-composite brake system. Weight-optimised AMG light alloy wheels in accordance with the new, innovative flow-forming principle, 9.5 x 19 inches at the front, and 11.0 x 20 inch at the rear, are fitted with 265/35 R 19 tyres up front and 295/30 R 20 tyres at the rear.

The reinterpretation of the Gullwing model will celebrate its market launch in spring 2010. The price will be 177,310 euros (incl. 19% VAT).

New Gullwing model with purely electric high-tech drive system: The electric Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG concept car – the exciting future of the super sports car

Mercedes AMG is paving the way ahead. In the form of the new SLS AMG with electric drive, the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz Cars is developing an exciting super sports car with a zero-emission high-tech drive system. With this model, Mercedes-Benz and AMG are displaying their expertise in the development of alternative drive solutions for high-performance super sports cars, delivering further proof of their pioneering status in this market segment.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with electric drive transforms the vision of powerful and locally emission-free super sports cars into reality thanks to an innovative drive system. Powerful forward thrust is provided by four electric motors with a combined peak output of 392 kW and a maximum torque of 880 Nm. The four electric motors are positioned near the wheels, substantially reducing the unsprung masses compared to wheel-hub motors. One transmission per axle transmits the power. This intelligent all-wheel drive system allows dynamically optimised power transmission without any losses by means of torque vectoring – in other words the specific, targeted acceleration of individual wheels. In its first, pilot phase, the SLS AMG with electric drive incorporates a liquid-cooled, high-voltage lithium-ion battery of modular design with an energy content of 48 kWh and a capacity of 40 Ah. The 400-volt battery is charged by means of targeted regeneration during braking whilst the car is being driven.

Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds

When it comes to dynamics, the electrically driven SLS AMG delivers an unequivocal statement: The Gullwing model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around 4 seconds, putting it on the same high level as the SLS AMG with a 6.3-litre V8 engine developing 420 kW/571 hp.

“With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just an issue of responsibility. We attach just as much importance to fascination and classic AMG performance,” says Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Optimal weight distribution and low centre of gravity

The purely electric drive system was factored into the equation as early as the concept phase when the new Gullwing model was being developed by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. It is ideally packaged for the integration of high-performance, zero-emission technology. By way of example, the four electric motors and the two transmissions can be positioned near the wheels and very low down in the vehicle. The same applies to the modular high-current battery, whose modules are located in front of the bulkhead, in the centre tunnel and behind the seats. Advantages of this solution include the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and the balanced weight distribution – ideal conditions for optimum handling, which the electrically powered SLS AMG shares with its petrol-driven sister model.

Key data at a glance:

Peak output: 392 kW

Torque: 880 Nm

0-100 km/h: Approx. 4 sec.

Rated capacity: 40 Ah (at 400 V)

Energy content: 3x 16 kWh = 48 kWh

The installation of the drive components required no changes whatsoever to the Gullwing model’s aluminium space-frame bodyshell. And there were just as few constraints when it came to maintaining the excellent level of passive safety and high degree of long-distance comfort that are hallmarks of Mercedes cars.

Strategic alliance for fast electrification of the car

With the electrically powered SLS AMG, Mercedes-Benz and AMG are continuing to pursue their aim of minimizing the amount of time it will take to bring about the electrification of the car. The strategic involvement in Deutsche Accumotive GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Evonik Industries AG, will provide the battery technology required in future. Daimler has the leading role in this joint venture, whose mission is to develop and produce batteries and battery systems for automotive applications.

2014 Mercedes SLS AMG GT Final Edition

2014 Mercedes SLS AMG GT Final Edition rear

Exterior with exclusive carbon fibre-look bonnet and rear spoiler

The special design of the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION ensures that it stands out in visual terms: the carbon fibre-effect bonnet with central air outlet, the carbon-fibre front splitter on the front apron, the fixed carbon-fibre rear aerofoil that is so reminiscent of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the exclusive AMG forged light-alloy wheels make it a real head-turner. Particularly in conjunction with the designo magno graphite matt paintwork that has been adopted from the collector’s model, the SLS AMG GT3 “45th ANNIVERSARY” (available as an option), the carbon fibre components and the AMG forged wheels have a distinctly sporty flair. To add to the distinctive visual impression when seen from behind, the struts of the rear apron are finished in high-gloss black.

New aerodynamic components comprising a carbon-fibre bonnet, rear aerofoil and front splitter reduce the lift on both the front and the rear axle. As on the SLS AMG Coupe Black Series and the SLS AMG GT3, the carbon-fibre bonnet of the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION features a central air outlet. Apart from effectively dissipating engine heat, this outlet also increases downforce at the front axle and improves the Cd value. The engineers at AMG have utilised the vacuum effect to deliver the double benefit of dissipating the hot air from the engine compartment at the same time as drawing up the cool airflow from the vehicle’s underbody. The optimised aerodynamic balance not only improves the car’s potential on the racing circuit, but also contributes to handling safety.

Fast-reacting, variable and emotionally exciting – the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission proves to be the perfect match for the V8 naturally aspirated engine. With four shift programmes, RACE START and an automatic double-declutching function, the dual-clutch transmission mounted in a transaxle configuration on the rear axle brings with it the perfect prerequisites for top performance. The particularly dynamic shift characteristics, and the shorter reaction time when selecting gears manually, enhance the emotional experience for the driver. The AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension with variable, electronically controlled damping, includes the “Sport” and “Sport plus” programmes.

MERCEDES SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION Designo Seats

Interior with designo Exclusive leather in a diamond pattern

It is not only the exterior design and the engineering of the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION that will satisfy the most discerning of tastes, but also the interior: the high-quality ambience is characterised above all by the striking designo Exclusive leather in a diamond pattern that is used to upholster the centre panels of both the seats and the doors. Contrasting topstitching in silver coordinates perfectly with the black leather upholstery, the silver seat belts and the black floor mats edged in silver leather. Carbon-fibre trim comes as standard.

A particularly exclusive detail is the “AMG FINAL EDITION – 1 of 350” badge on the carbon-fibre centre console. A further high-quality feature, both to look at and to feel, is the so-called “3D seam”: a fine strip of Alcantara® set into the leather-covered instrument panel demonstrates the attention to detail that is so typical of Mercedes-AMG. Contrasting topstitching skilfully hand-worked in silver adds the finishing touch to the 3D seam, underlining the craftsmanship involved. The AMG Performance steering wheel in Alcantara® with silver 12 o’clock markings all-round and a high-gloss black real metal insert matches the high-gloss black surrounds of the air vents. The sports seats feature an embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints.

Tremendous variety, terrific success story

Whether Coupé, Roadster, GT, Black Series, Electric Drive, the GT3 racing version, the new FINAL EDITION or – last not least – the Official F1® Safety Car in the Formula 1® World Championship: the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been causing a stir since 2009. The output of the models with road-going approval ranges from 420 kW (571 hp) to 552 kW (751 hp).

The super sports car celebrated its world premiere in its Coupé guise at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in September 2009, with the market launch taking place in the spring of 2010. The spectacular gullwing model was followed in 2011 by the SLS AMG Roadster and the customer-sport racing model, the SLS AMG GT3. With various titles in international championships such as the ADAC GT Masters, the FIA GT3 European Championship and the FIA GT1 World Championship, as well as over 100 victories in race series on five continents, the racing version of the gullwing model has impressively demonstrated its extraordinary performance. In particular, long-distance successes in the Bathurst 12-hour race and the 24-hour races in Dubai, at the Nürburgring, in Spa-Francorchamps and in Barcelona have spectacularly confirmed the competitiveness of the racing gullwing model. In 2013 alone, the SLS AMG GT3 2013 thus claimed the “grand slam” of classic GT3 long-distance races, with four victories in succession. In the hotly contested Blancpain Endurance Series, the SLS AMG GT3 similarly won the championship title in 2013.

Since early 2010 the SLS AMG has also been ensuring safety in Formula 1, the ultimate motor racing series, as the Official F1® Safety Car. The FORMULA 1 SHELL BELGIAN GRAND PRIX in September 2012 saw the SLS AMG GT take over this role.

In June 2013 came the market launch of the two most powerful variants: the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series with 464 kW (631 hp) and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with 552 kW (751 hp).

Not least on the basis of its breathtaking design and acknowledged superb driving dynamics, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG is today already deemed to be a classic of the future.

McChip Mercedes SLS AMG Receives Upgraded Tuning Program

The McChip tuning program increased the power level up to an impressive 706 HP and 585 lb-ft of torque

The German aftermarket specialists, McChip, have updated their tuning program for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, by adding even more power.

The previously released McChip MC700 compressor kit included a mechanically driven compressor and a performance-enhancing high-end exhaust system that was developed in cooperation with Capristo Exhaust Systems. These additions increased the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine’s power level up to an impressive 680 HP and 567 lb-ft of torque. Adding the extra 109 HP set you back 69,900 Euros, or around $808 dollars each per HP.

But now, the specialist from Mcchip-Dkr have achieved an even more impressive number. Increasing the output with a program dubbed “stage 4” the SLS AMG output has been upped to 706 HP (519 kW) and 793 Nm (585 lb-ft). McChip managed this by installing a custom exhaust system, sports catalytic converters and performing engine software tweaks. The entire power upgrade package will cost you 78,999 EUR.

In addition to the massive power boost, a hydraulically-controlled DDC or HLS 4-sports chassis made by KW is available for 12,999 EUR. CoverEFX is selling this complete matte grey/red foliation for an extra 5,999 EUR.

Black Falcon Team Victorious with SLS AMG GT3 in 24-Hour Race

The SLS AMG GT3 from customer team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon claimed an unchallenged victory in the Dubai 24-hour race

Once again, the SLS AMG GT3 from the customer team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon claimed an unchallenged victory in the Dubai 24-hour race (10th to 12th of January 2013). The gullwing car with race number 1 and the drivers Khaled Al Qubaisi (UAE), Bernd Schneider (GER), Jeroen Bleekemolen (NED) and Sean Edwards (GB) entered the race from the pole position and won the race two laps ahead. Thus the team continued its success of the previous year.

However, the run-up of the 24-hour race was an unfavourable one for AMG Customer Team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon: The gullwing car with race number 1 was damaged so hard in an accident on the test track, the Grand Prix track of the Dubai Autodrome, which is 5.39 kilometres long, that it could not be repaired on the spot. The team decided to purchase the substitute car of the British team Preci-Spark and worked for two entire nights in succession in order to prepare the car for the free training sessions and the qualifying on Thursday. Without a roll-out prior to the end of the qualifying, Jeroen Bleekemolen achieved the fastest training time already in the third lap – thus the Dutch driver laid the cornerstone for today’s success. The victorious SLS AMG GT3 was the first customer sports gullwing car ever that was delivered: Preci-Spark was the first AMG Customer Team that took over a SLS AMG GT3 in 2011.

In the starting phase, the gullwing car of Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon remained among the first positions until it unluckily fell back during several code-60 phases. In a code-60 phase, vehicles are driven on the track with slow speed until the scene of an accident is cleared up and the race can be started again. In the further course of the race, the race number 1 remained unaffected by problems, did not give up its top position in the race and gained victory in the fight for the first position.

Alexander Böhm, team manager Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon: “I am extremely happy! The team showed an exceptional performance. We all thought that the accident on Wednesday would compel us to give up. However, our mechanics assembled the car with a new chassis and showed their full commitment and determination. The car was finished five minutes prior to closing the pit lane and drove for 24 hours without any problems. Our drivers remained the vehicle on high speed during the entire race and did not have any problems with liability. I also want to thank the twins David and Godfrey Jones of the team Preci-Spark for their collegial and spontaneous help!”

Bernd Schneider: “A sensational success and great day for AMG Customer Sports. After the accident on Wednesday nobody in the team reckoned on winning the first position today. Our SLS AMG GT3 was fast on a constant basis and ran very reliably. Now I succeeded in winning the Dubai 24 Hours in my third attempt. I want to thank the entire team!”

Schneider, the five time DTM champion and AMG brand ambassador participated in the Dubai 24 Hours for the third time as part of the AMG Customer Sports Drivers’ Support. In 2012, he won the second position and in his debut year 2011 he claimed the seventh overall position.

The second SLS AMG GT3 from the AMG Customer Team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon with race number 2 ended the endurance race in Dubai on position seven. Andreas Simonsen (SWE), Steve Jans (LUX), Simon Knap (NED), Sergei Afanasiev (RUS) and double starter Khaled Al Qubaisi (UAE) started from position 14. The gullwing car had established itself among the five fastest cars, before it fell back numerous positions after a collision. However, the team succeeded in gaining the seventh overall position due to constantly good lap times.

The British AMG Customer Team Preci-Spark entered the race from position 17 and achieved its best result ever in a 24-hour race by winning the fifth overall position. The twins David and Godfrey Jones (aged 59) drove in the Amateur Category with their sons Morgan (27), Garreth (29) and Phillip (32), in which they achieved a sensational second position.

The Italian AMG Customer Team De Lorenzi Racing won position twelve in their first race with the gullwing car. Race number 14 entered the race from the twelfth position with the drivers Gianluca de Lorenzi, Dario Paletto (both ITA), Dan Norris-Jones (GB) and Olivier Baharian (FRA) and lost precious time due to a longer repair in the beginning. In the course of the race, De Lorenzi Racing managed to approach to the top ten.

Ola Källenius, chairman of the board, Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “Dubai is the place to be for Mercedes-AMG. After the 1-2-3 last year, we managed to build up the success today through a further victory by the team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon. This success once again proves the performance and reliability of our SLS AMG GT3. I want to thank the Customer teams, the drivers and all participants.”

Uli Fritz, head of AMG Customer Sports: “Congratulations to the victorious AMG Customer Team Abu Dhabi by Black Falcon. Apart from the unchallenged victory, I am happy about the fact that all four entered gullwing cars reached the finish line. Having three of four entered SLS AMG GT3 winning top ten positions is an exceptional result. I want to thank all teams and drivers!”

The readers of the motor magazine Auto Zeitung have chosen the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class the best off-roader in the over 30,000 euros price segment. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG took first place twice – the Roadster as best convertible in the over 30,000 euros segment and the Coupé variant as best super sports car – for the third time in a row. All three models received the prestigious “Auto Trophy”. The awards were accepted at Meilenwerk in Düsseldorf last night by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Professor Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, and Dr Joachim Schmidt, Member of the Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars, responsible for Sales and Marketing.

This was the 24th annual readers’ poll conducted by Auto Zeitung to determine the best cars of the year. Almost 100,000 readers cast their votes, choosing the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class as the best car of the year in the “over 30,000 euro off-roader segment”. Following on from the “Goldenes Lenkrad” award, this is the second readers’ poll to be topped by the third generation of the successful SUV, which was only presented in June 2011.

The readers valued not only the characteristic and distinctive design and variable interior, with that all-important sense of wellbeing, but also the excellent energy efficiency and thus environmental acceptability of this premium SUV. The permanent all-wheel drive system of the Mercedes-Benz M‑Class also proved a determining factor thanks to its well-balanced ride comfort along with excellent driving dynamics, both on and off road, along with the car’s outstanding range and high level of safety.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing Coupé has topped the readers’ poll as best super sports car for the third time in succession. The open-top SLS Roadster simultaneously scooped the award in the over 30,000 euros convertible segment to give the SLS a double victory this year. The super sports car owes this outstanding position to its fascinating lines, which evoke memories of the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s. But it backs this up by exquisite engineering and technology, including aluminium body, AMG 6.3 litre V8 front mid-engine with dry sump lubrication, a power output of 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Newton metres of torque, 7-speed double clutch transmission in transaxle configuration and agile sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone axles. This unique combination of high-tech features guarantees the very highest level of driving dynamics both in the Gullwing Coupé and in the Roadster.

Traditionally, Mercedes-Benz vehicles always figure prominently in voting for the best cars of the year’s crop. In 2010 the Mercedes-Benz CLS and, for the second time, the SLS AMG were awarded the “Auto-Trophy”, while the year before the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and once again the SLS AMG came away with top honours.

Smaller Mercedes-Benz SLS Sibling Confirmed

Mercedes-Benz is planning a smaller, less expensive sibling to the Mercedes SLS supercar to rival Porsche 911

Christoph Jung, development director of performance division AMG revealed that Mercedes-Benz is planning a smaller, less expensive sibling to the Mercedes SLS supercar. According to Jung, “There is room for an AMG model below the SLS, targeting the Porsche 911. This is the next market for AMG, and we are considering what is the right package.”

Jung also said that the success of the £168,000 SLS Gullwing – which has now sold 5,000 models since 2009 and grown to include a Roadster version – had paved the way for a second AMG model.

“It is important to work on our brand and grow it. Look at the Porsche 911 – it is a huge success. They have done a very good job in evolving it over the years. Now, thanks to the SLS, companies like Porsche see AMG as competition. Everyone recognises that AMG can produce super sports cars.”

Although this new sports car is only in the early stages, Jung did reveal a few details to AutoExpress. To keep it from becoming to heavy, it will have only two seats and as stated by Jung, “It has to be a V8. We have heritage and customers expect it.”

According to AutoExpress, the egnine will “most likely a development of the firm’s latest 5.5-litre twin-turbo, this engine would produce up to 500bhp, driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox. Expect 0-60mph in four seconds and a top speed of 185mph. “We have to have performance figures close to competitors, but we need much more,” Jung told us. “We need it to sound right and go right. It can’t just be the most powerful. It has to have the whole package.”

The new model is also likely to be highly efficient, boasting stop-start and other efficiency-boosting measures.

Jung said that AMG had been paying particular attention to Jaguar. “It is very interesting for me to see the C-X16 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but I think the starting price of 60,000 Euros [£52,000] is very ambitious.”

Jung hinted the new SLS model would have to start at around 80,000 Euros (£70,000) in order to be profitable. A coupe is a certainty, and a roadster could join it. “When you are new to a market, you can only offer one or two variants. You can’t expect to do more than that from the start.”

As always, stay tuned as we will bring you the latest news.

Mercedes-Benz Baby SLS Plans Continue to Emerge

The SLC will rival the Porsche 911 and feature a potent six-cylinder with double turbocharging and up to 500 hp

Mercedes-Benz is planning a little brother of the SLS Gullwing. It is designed to have a sleek design, with a potent six-cylinder with double turbocharging and 350 hp to 500 hp. Minor downsides of the baby SLS is that in order to keep cost down, the distinctive Gullwing doors could go. The price for the 350-horsepower model will presumably cost under € 100,000.

The SLC is still in preliminary development, currently with no launch date set. There are two scenarios that Auto Bild sees happening: It could be ready for its world introduction in 2014 or, should it be become the SLS’s successor, the world could have to wait till at least 2016.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG by German Tuner VÄTH

The VÄTH SLS g accelerates to a sprint from zero to 100 km/h is completed in just 3.6 seconds

The motto “Give Your Car Wings” is already anticipated by the vehicle manufacturers , but it does not prevent the company VÄTH Automotive from Bavarian Aschaffenburg near Hösbach from eliciting the wings for more power.

With the engine electronics optimization and in-house high-performance exhaust system, the tuning kit from V63S VÄTH achieves the peak performance of 615 hp and 680 Nm at 5800 rpm. Here, the newly programmed engine management with custom ignition and injection characteristics delivers power to achieve the top speed of 330 km/h. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h is completed in just 3.6 seconds.

The VÄTH high-performance exhaust system has a special extra pneumatic valve system with manual control in the cockpit. This allows you to adjust the tone of the 6.3-liter eight-cylinder “on-the-fly” between pleasantly quiet or sporting pithy.

This power is required for VÄTH SLS high-performance brake system which has increased the loads. Slotted rotors with matching high-performance brake pads and steel flex lines of VÄTH ensure that deceleration of the supercar brings it to a stop quickly.

For efficient translation of the performance and driving dynamics to the asphalt, VÄTH three-part forged rims in the dimensions of 9,5J x 20 at the front and 11,5J x 20 at the rear were installed. The weight of the wheel pairs is different due to large wheels of non-standard dimensions and is born by the tires in dimensions of 265/30ZR20 at the front and 315/25ZR20 at the rear. The spiders are painted in titanium color, but can be painted in any color at your option.

The VÄTH Comfort Suspension provides visual and driving dynamics benefits from lowering by 25 millimeters. This allows VÄTH SLS to provide the optimal and safe driving and comfort on the road.

For very high speeds which the VÄTH SLS will often gain on the road, there is VÄTH aerodynamic package fully developed from carbon fiber composite, which greatly improves the stability and traction, and has a discreet and stylish look. This includes an integrated front lip spoiler, which increases the downforce on the front axle at high speeds. To achieve the optimum balance of pressure between the front and the rear, the latter represents VÄTH boot spoiler fitted with trailing edge. The side skirts also improve the brake ducts on the rear axle.

The interior had to go through certain procedures. The engineered leather sport steering wheel can also be provided upon request with carbon or wood applications. The speedometer was generously extended to 400 mph. The black floor mats from the high quality and durable material have silver VÄTH logos. Furthermore, door trimming with special leather is possible.

The complete reconstruction costs 32,670 Euro.

Mercedes-Benz Displays SLS AMG Safety Car at RETTmobil

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is inspired by the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s and is powered by an impressive 6.3-liter V8 engine

Most of us would expect to see something along the lines of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van as a safety vehicle, after all, it’s roomy, comfortable and can actually carry medical equipment. Mercedes however, took a different approach to safety by unveiling their latest emergency car in the form of the SLS AMG at the 2011RETTmobil 2011. That’s correct, Mercedes took its gullwing super car, slapped on a few red stickers with “SLS EMERGENCY” lettering, topped it off with a requisite light bar with blue light beams and voila: an EMT’s first responder car with a hand-built engine under the hood.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is inspired by the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s and is powered by an impressive 6.3-liter V8 engine built by AMG and capable to deliver 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Newton metres of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed double clutch transmission in transaxle configuration and propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph). The car features an agile sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone axles and a combination of high-tech features that guarantees the very highest level of driving dynamics.

And for those who don’t know, the RETTmobil is the industry event for information and training of decision makers and managers of emergency services.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Prototype Officially Unveiled

The convertible SLS AMG Roadster is the second car to be developed independently by AMG

After the gullwing version, the open-top variant is the second car to be independently developed by AMG. The Coupé and Roadster concepts were created in parallel – which brought decisive advantages during the development process. During this approx. 3-year period for the SLS AMG Roadster, the engineers devoted particular attention to the aspects of bodyshell rigidity, driving dynamics, the soft top and NVH.

Greater Stuttgart area, spring 2011: the new SLS AMG Roadsters are slightly disguised as they cover their test routes. Easily identified by those in the know, others only see these two-seaters with a fabric soft top as some prototype or other: there are no Mercedes stars or model designations to be seen, just black adhesive foil at the front, rear and along the sides. The proportions speak for themselves, however: a long bonnet, large wheels and a short rear end indicate that this is a sports car of breathtaking design.

There are still several months to go before the world premiere at the International Automobile Show in Frankfurt/Main in September 2011. Enough time to verify the maturity of the new SLS AMG Roadster. The personnel responsible at AMG have already completed most of the work involved, as the Coupé and Roadster were created in parallel. The development and testing of a new AMG high-performance car is based on the digital prototype (DPT). Extensive investigations help to achieve specific objectives. Whether these concern the bodyshell design, weight distribution, engine position, centre of gravity or axle design, or of course the handling dynamics, aerodynamics, ergonomics, crash behaviour and production process – the very latest simulation programmes allow the very realistic representation of a vehicle and all its characteristics. The digital prototype is therefore a complete, virtual automobile.

In the process AMG also uses the extensive know-how of colleagues at Mercedes-Benz: as in the case of the Coupé, networked development with selected Mercedes-Benz development departments at the Mercedes Technology Center (MTC) in Sindelfingen was intensified.

The latest simulation software and extensive test drives on all continents make the 420 kW (571 hp) Roadster fit for its market launch in autumn 2011. The focus of the specialists in Affalterbach was particularly on bodyshell rigidity, handling dynamics, the soft top and NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness).

Synthesis: rigidity, performance and a close-fitting soft top

Naturally all these development aspects are closely linked, as Tobias Moers (44), head of overall development and member of the Executive Board at Mercedes-AMG, explains: “Without bodyshell rigidity there are no handling dynamics, and neither can the close fit of the soft top be guaranteed.” As the Roadster variant was already taken into consideration during the conceptual phase for the SLS AMG, the lightweight and extremely rigid aluminium spaceframe was specified at a correspondingly early stage. Owing to the omission of a fixed roof and gullwing doors, it was necessary to design the side sills more robustly. But not primarily to meet the legal requirements in the event of a crash – in principle the Roadster would also manage this with the side sills of the Coupé. Studies and test drives showed that the driving dynamics could be improved even further with this measure, therefore side sills with greater wall thicknesses and chambers were developed for the open-top SLS AMG. Tobias Moers: “The SLS AMG Roadster is a super-sportscar – just like the Coupé. It goes without saying that AMG is also determined to achieve superior driving dynamics with this open-top variant.”

In order to achieve handling dynamics identical to those of the Coupé, despite the lack of a fixed roof, the Roadster has two features designed to increase the rigidity of the bodyshell: the cross-member carrying the dashboard has additional supporting struts at the windscreen frame and at the centre tunnel, and a strut mounting stay between the soft top and the fuel tank makes the rear axle even more rigid. These features prevent unwanted vibrations from the start, and make the use of additional, weight-increasing vibration dampers such as those often employed by competitors unnecessary. As another important aspect, it is only if the bodyshell has the requisite rigidity that the soft top can be safely and reliably opened and closed electrohydraulically while on the move at up to 50 km/h. The side members of the front and rear modules in both SLS AMG models are identical. The bodyshell of the Roadster tips the scales at only 243 kilograms – which is comparable to the low, 241-kilogram weight of the SLS AMG Coupé’s bodyshell.

A few specific modifications to the aluminium spaceframe

Owing to the omission of the coupé roof and gullwing doors, the open-top SLS AMG has a reinforcing cross-member behind the seats which supports the fixed rollover protection system. Not forgetting the 250-watt subwoofer of the Bang&Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end sound system: This is accommodated in the cross-member, as the Coupé-specific location on the parcel shelf is not available owing to the Roadster’s soft top. One particular challenge was acoustic insulation of the cross-member, which acts as a subwoofer housing for the two 165-millimetre speakers connected in series. Numerous improvements became necessary before the required listening pleasure was achieved. It was only with the help of a special bulkhead within the aluminium cross-member that all audiophile standards could be satisfied.

The three-layered fabric soft top of the SLS AMG Roadster, which is deposited behind the seats in a Z-formation to save space, is also an aspect relevant to handling dynamics. This weight-optimised, combined magnesium/steel/ aluminium construction ensures a low centre of gravity and is designed for speeds up to the maximum of 317 km/h (electronically limited). Whether open or closed, even at top speed there must be no intrusive flapping, booming, hissing, clattering, whistling or howling. Likewise the push-on glass draught-stop and the panelling in the interior, on the soft top and along the beltline must be vibration-free. Nothing must be allowed to compromise the open-air enjoyment. The basis for verified, customer-compatible results in extreme conditions is provided by precisely defined test drives on the high-speed tracks in Papenburg, Nardo (Italy) and Idiada (Spain).

The excellent acoustics – which AMG engineers have naturally also verified with sophisticated measuring technology – also benefit from another special feature, namely the seamless, bonded-in rear window of single-layer safety glass. A special production process not only ensures a smooth transition between the outer skin of the soft top and the glass, as the sum of these design measures also leads to low wind noise when the roof is closed – at any speed.

125 years of experience with innovations in open-top vehicles

Ensuring that the soft top is wind and waterproof is a complex undertaking, and AMG and Mercedes-Benz have used the enormous experience gained during 125 years of innovation. There have always been open-top vehicles in the history of Mercedes-Benz – and unlike in the case of many competitors, in an uninterrupted sequence.

Every soft top is different, however, and even objectives already defined become more ambitious over time. The five challenges to which the AMG developers of the SLS AMG Roadster gave great attention and commitment were water, sand, dust, heat and cold. One special feature of the compact soft top is the continuous water pocket: this is attached below the soft top to catch rainwater and direct it down to the underbody via two apertures on each side.

All the development aspects of a vehicle which involve flexible deformation are always very complex. Simulations can sometimes lead to false conclusions, and do not always provide the most cost-effective solution. Classic test procedures often help to achieve rapid results. Development project manager Holger Strahl (34): “In this field it is not possible to simulate everything with CAD, and it becomes a matter of trying out, driving, testing and improving. The solution finally approved must also be suitable for series production, of course. Our specialist departments and the overall development team work together very closely in their common search for the perfect solution.” He also adds: “There is no such thing as the second-best alternative for AMG.”

Endurance test with 16 criteria: the “Sindelfingen rain test”

The rain test at the Mercedes Technology Center (MTC) in Sindelfingen is particularly demanding, and every new vehicle bearing the Mercedes star is required to pass it – whether it has a fixed roof, a soft top or a vario-roof. Extreme quantities of water are used to ensure that the result of the development work is watertight – which is a particular challenge in the case of roadsters or cabriolets. 16 tests must be successfully absolved before approval is granted.

Whether during the hose test, when all soft top, door and flap seals are sprayed with a water-hose, the continuous, overnight rain test, the fording test, the icing, swirl and high-pressure tests, or the final session in an automatic car wash – the rain test simulates every conceivable situation that can occur on any continent.

Bench testing and practical trials in all climatic zones

In addition to various test facilities such as the water chamber and the climate/ wind tunnel, the AMG specialists have recourse to test drives in all climatic regions of the world, where problems can be identified and solutions sought. In Laredo, Texas, for example, there is a particularly fine dust which finds its way into practically any gap – and tests the seals to the absolute limit.

The compact fabric soft top, which can be conveniently opened and closed in just 11 seconds at the touch of a button, even at speeds up to 50 km/h, must also submit to various tortures. One of these is the standardised soft top endurance test used for all new Mercedes roadsters or Mercedes cabriolets: 20,000 closing cycles on a stationary test rig must present no problem for the hydraulic cylinders, electric motors and joints. There are also 2500 closing cycles while on the move, whether in great heat, icy cold, high humidity or dry desert winds. In this area too, nothing is left to chance – and for excellent reasons: the aim of this enormous effort is to give the customer limitless driving pleasure in their SLS AMG Roadster.

Endurance trial as a final quality check

All the optimisation stages have been absolved, and the production tests at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen have been successful, but the developers have still not reached their goal. The quality of the overall vehicle is now the focus of the accompanying endurance trials. These simulate an entire vehicle life under the toughest conditions in accelerated test cycles. The aim is to verify the level of maturity before production of customer vehicles commences.

The endurance testing at a glance:

Long-term testing on a variety of different roads:

All the components and systems are tested together in everyday operation. Loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight, the test cars are put through a precisely defined test programme on country roads, on motorways and in city traffic.

Endurance testing on heathland:

In this case, the developers focus on the durability of the chassis and suspension components, the entire bodyshell and the integral subframe on which the front axle, steering and engine are mounted. The test cars are loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight.

“Accelerated” endurance testing:

Testing of the entire vehicle, focussing on the powertrain, chassis and suspension. Special features of the AMG programme include 10,000 kilometres on the Nürburgring’s North Loop and 10,000 kilometres in city traffic.

Full-load endurance testing:

Extreme acceleration and braking manoeuvres with a high proportion of full-load operation, making extreme demands on the cooling, fuel-delivery and braking systems.

Long-term corrosion testing:

Corrosion testing of the entire vehicle simulates the toughest dynamic and climatic environmental influences.

Final board approval:

All-inclusive verification of the degree of development and production maturity.

World premiere on 13 September 2011, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main

This is an extensive and tightly scheduled programme, and for many an AMG engineer it will only begin to lose its immediacy at the world premiere on 13 September 2011, when the new SLS AMG Roadster is presented to a barrage of media attention at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Main.

SLS AMG Gullstream by FAB Design Officially Released

Power output has also been raised from the SLS AMG's standard 563 bhp to 607 bhp together with 690 Nm at 4600 rpm

FAB Design showed off their version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG last month at the Geneva Motor. At the show, Fab Design had the SLS AMG covered in light-blue, after which the SLS tuner was spotted in a showroom in Dubai.

Today, the distinctly tuned SLS AMG released the official details on the car, dubbing it the SLS AMG Gullstream.

The Swiss tuner from Hunzenschwill installed a body kit that consists of a front bumper with vertically positioned daylight running lights, widened fenders that flow seamlessly into the sides skirts and then back up into the widened quarter panels. The rear bumper now comes with larger vents and has a diffuser that supports lip spoiler made of carbon fiber. Fab Design developed a stainless steel sports exhaust system with an integrated valve control and four classic round pipes, a pair on each side. On the roof there’s a non-functional air scoop.

Power output has also been raised from the SLS AMG’s standard 563 bhp to 607 bhp together with 690 Nm at 4600 rpm. The new SLS AMG Gullstream does a sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a mere 3.6 seconds and manges a topspeed of 202 mph (325 km/h).

Kicherer Unveils Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG 63 Supersport GT

The Kicherer Mercedes SLS 63 Supersport GT accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 198.8 mph

The German tuners at Kicherer have been busy as they have today revealed yet another aftermarket program for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, called the 63 Supersport GT. Kicherer’s version of the SLS AMG is powered by the factory engine, that’s been upgraded to about 630 PS (464 kW), 700 Nm torque. The Kicherer Mercedes SLS 63 Supersport GT can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 198.8 mph (320 km/h).

Kicherer’s 63 Supersport GT exterior aerodynamics package for the Mercedes SLS AMG offers a more aggressive look and feel than its prior version. It includes a massive new front grille, carbon fiber front fins and it’s completely covered in matte black foil.

Kicherer’s new Mercedes SLS AMG can be lowered up to 30 mm with the push of a button, this ability is owed to the unique height adjustable suspension kit with lift-up function developed by Stockach. The Kicherer 63 Supersport GT also features stainless steel damper sport exhaust system with dynamic pressure regulation and anew tailpipes.

The Kicherer Mercedes SLS AMG 63 Supersport GT is seated on 20 inch front rims and 21 inch rear light alloy rims.

Kicherer describes the SLS 63 Supersport GT like this: “And as often as we see the SLS on Germany’s streets in the meantime, the super sports car of AMG seems to sell like hot cakes. Exactly for this reason, specialist KICHERER also upgrades and presents a comprehensive finishing programme. “

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 Lands Podium Finish in the Nürburgring Season Opener

Two of the gullwing cars finished third and fourth respectively, the first time after the development and test programme

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 started with good results into the 2011 season of the VLN series (Nürburgring Endurance Championships). Two of the gullwing cars finished third and fourth respectively. It was the first time after the development and test programme of the SLS AMG GT3, that the customer teams entered the car without factory support.

After 28 laps over the Nordschleife and the shortened Grand Prix circuit, Black Falcon was the most successful gullwing team: Former DTM driver Thomas Jäger, Kenneth Heyer, Jan Seyffarth and Jeroen Bleekemolen finished third overall and first of the GT3 cars. Horn Motorsport with David Horn and Sascha Bert with another SLS AMG GT3 came home fourth, despite a spin at the Mercedes-Arena on lap 24; they had started 18th on the grid. Two other gullwing cars of Black Falcon with drivers Andrii Lebed/Ralf Schall/Hannes Plesse and Vimal Mehta/Sean Paul Breslin/Sean Patrick Bresling ended up 7th 19th respectively.

Mamerow Racing with former DTM driver Armin Hahne and Chris Mamerow retired due to a technical problem. When Hahne pitted from the lead on lap 21, Mamerow was not able to continue. ROWE RACING did not start following an accident of Dominik Schwager in qualifying. He had damaged his car so badly, that the team was not able to repair it in time for the race.

The best SLS AMG GT3 in qualifying was the Black Falcon team car with Thomas Jäger/Kenneth Heyer/Jan Seyffarth/Jeroen Bleekemolen in third position; followed by Armin Hahne/Chris Mamerow in the Mamerow Racing car in seventh place. Hahne’s fast lap was disrupted by yellow flags so that he wasn’t able to benefit from the improving conditions towards the end of the session.

It was an exciting and close race right from the start. After three laps, Jäger was third with 1.3sec behind the leader. Four different teams were in the lead with three different makes.

Thomas Jäger, third: “A good start of the Mercedes-AMG customer sports programme. Today, the SLS AMG GT3 proved fast and well-engineered. Also for our colleagues of Mamerow Racing a podium finish was possible. It’s a shame that they retired from the lead. However, this was just the beginning of a long season and with the SLS’s potential I expect many good results.” In the course of the best possible support of Mercedes-AMG for their customer teams, test driver Thomas Jäger is racing alternately for the teams.

Customer Sports: SLS AMG GT3s entered by private teams

The SLS AMG GT3s have been entered exclusively by private teams. Black Falcon took part with three cars while Mamerow Racing, Horn Motorsport and ROWE RACING were at the start with one car each.

The VLN Nürburgring Endurance Championship has been held since 1977, and is seen as Europe’s most successful broad-based motorsport series. The ten races of the 2011 season will be held exclusively on the Nürburgring’s legendary Nordschleife (North Loop) and the short link to the Grand Prix circuit. The field, with different vehicle models ranging from near-series compact cars to recent classics and right up to thoroughbred super-sports cars, guarantees attractive and exciting races.

The next event will be staged on 30 April 2011.
