Mercedes-Maybach X David LaChapelle

Avant-Garde Art Collaboration Unveiled

In a collision of automotive opulence and artistic ingenuity, Mercedes-Maybach and renowned photographer David LaChapelle have once again joined forces to redefine the boundaries of cultural influence. The result? A triumphant trio of original artworks, unveiled amidst the glitz and glamour of Milan Design Week.

At the heart of this collaboration lies a shared ethos of pushing creative boundaries. Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, encapsulates this sentiment, affirming that “Culture and creativity are at the heart of Mercedes-Maybach.” But it’s not just about cars; it’s about crafting an unparalleled brand experience, and who better to breathe life into this vision than David LaChapelle?

LaChapelle, a maestro of color and composition, embarked on a journey through art history, drawing inspiration from the revolutionary movements of Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. These art epochs, with their daring perspectives and avant-garde aesthetics, mirror Maybach’s own evolution from engineering marvel to symbol of aspirational design.

The challenge was formidable: seamlessly integrate the Mercedes-Maybach within the artistic tableau without overshadowing the composition. LaChapelle’s meticulous attention to detail, coupled with his penchant for analog techniques, ensured a harmonious fusion of automotive prowess and artistic flair.

The unveiling took place at The Gallery Meravigli, where guests were treated to an immersive experience that transcended mere exhibition. The set design, a testament to LaChapelle’s visionary approach, transported attendees into a realm where art and automotive design converged in a symphony of creativity.

Each artwork tells a story, weaving together elements of history, fantasy, and whimsy. “Cubist Scape” pays homage to the pioneers of Cubism, with its interplay of shapes and colors echoing the movement’s radical departure from traditional representation. Meanwhile, “Future Scape” transports us to an alternate reality where the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV stands proudly alongside the Egyptian pyramids, a nod to the era of Futurism and its obsession with technological progress.

Lastly, “Surreal Scape” beckons us into a dreamscape reminiscent of 1930s Paris, where the Mercedes-Maybach GLS reigns supreme amidst a backdrop of theatricality and whimsy.

But this collaboration isn’t just about creating art; it’s about preserving it for posterity. Following its premiere in Milan, these masterpieces will find a permanent home within the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Art Collection, ensuring that they continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

David LaChapelle’s oeuvre extends far beyond the realm of photography, encompassing music videos, films, and stage productions. His work, characterized by its boundless imagination and irreverent spirit, has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the 21st century.

As for Mercedes-Benz, the Art Collection stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to cultural enrichment and social responsibility. With exhibitions spanning the globe, the collection serves as a beacon of diversity and inclusion, celebrating artists from all walks of life.

In the realm where art and automotive innovation intersect, Mercedes-Maybach and David LaChapelle have forged a partnership that transcends mere collaboration; it’s a celebration of creativity in its purest form.

PRESS RELEASE

Embarking on a new chapter of cultural influence, longstanding partners Mercedes‑Maybach and David LaChapelle have reunited for a collaboration that spotlights the brand’s iconic roster, resulting in three original artworks. Driven by the powerhouses’ shared creator values and through the adoption of three of the most influential art movements, the outcome is a visionary interpretation of art and automotive design.

The artworks were unveiled on April 16th at an exclusive cocktail evening held at The Gallery Meravigli, during Milan Design Week. A live representation of the collaboration, the event recreated the set design of one of the concepts in an immersive and art-focused experience.

“Culture and creativity are at the heart of Mercedes-Maybach, but so is pushing boundaries in automotive and beyond. We are delighted to reunite with our long-term partner and pioneer artist David LaChapelle, to create a one-of-a-kind Maybach brand experience.”
Daniel Lescow, Head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG

“Mercedes-Maybach has a great tradition of investing in artists and supporting the fine arts. By cultivating a world of engineers, designers and artists, Maybach inspires creativity within their products and beyond. It is an honour to be part of the Maybach legacy and play in that beyond!
David LaChapelle

United by shared creator values

Following no prescribed brief, LaChapelle approached art and three of its most impactful periods as the inspiration behind the Mercedes-Maybach commission: Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism. The selected art movements, groundbreaking for their time, perfectly allude to Maybach’s history as a pioneering piece of engineering turned aspirational design piece.

The challenge was to create artworks that seamlessly integrated the Mercedes-Maybach in an intentional way without drawing focus from the rest of the composition, which was achieved through LaChapelle’s meticulous approach to set-design.

Given LaChapelle’s passion for analogue, the set’s exquisite technical characteristics, precision and craft play a significant role in the creative process and final output. The live production also allowed for collaboration between talents, art department and crew which included acrobatics, four-time Academy Award Winner for Best Costume Design, Colleen Atwood, and LaChapelle’s longstanding set design collaborator, Annie Sperling.

The artworks

Titled “Cubist Scape”, the Cubism-inspired artwork took reference from several artists who initiated the movement. Playing on a juxtaposition of shapes, colours and methodical acrobatics, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is seamlessly integrated within the frame due to its metallic and glowing sheens, reflecting the energy this period is known for.

The collective cultural interest in Egyptology and Egypt’s advanced civilization set the tone for the Futurism artwork, titled “Future Scape”. Drawn from LaChapelle’s imagination, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV (Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, energy consumption combined: 24.1-22 kWh/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A)[1] stands alongside the Egyptian pyramids, each an engineering triumph. Acrobats and flying machines complete the scene in a whimsical and humorous tableau.

A new take on the Surrealism movement that plays on Paris in the 1930s and its collective of artists, LaChapelle’s “Surreal Scape” focuses on a repetition of forms and unconventional elements grouped together. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS (Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, energy consumption combined: 14.2-13.9 l/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 321-314 g/km | CO₂ class: G)1 is balanced in a landscape of juxtaposing scale where elements of theatre, dance and music are represented through the artist’s signature style.

Following the premiere at the Gallery Meravigli in Milan, the artworks will become part of the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection and will later be shown at various occasions worldwide.

What You Need to Know: Mercedes-Maybach

Mercedes-Maybach stands for ultimate luxury in its most cutting-edge guise

Brand aestheticsMercedes-Maybach stands for ultimate luxury in its most cutting-edge guise. The brand’s style is embodied in sublime beauty, supreme aesthetics and elegance. Something very special is showcased for one sublime moment. This is not about wallowing in the past, but about forward-looking enhancement and refinement. The atmosphere is warm, light and airy. This is also underscored by the use of light colours, which symbolise the luxury of room and space. Black elements forge a link with Mercedes-Benz and allow precious metals to add a sublime shine. The chosen materials feature a deliberate interplay of the familiar and the innovative, exclusively crafted throughout. Ultimate precision and a loving attention to detail are demonstrated by graphic elements which are derived from the brand logo.

Exterior design: Pinstripe radiator grille, expressive wheel rims

The exterior conveys expressiveness and superior quality. Characteristic features include the radiator grille, the long wheelbase, a specific rim design and the use of chrome as design elements.

The Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille

The chrome-plated radiator grille with its fine vertical bars defines the front view. The vertical bars become slightly thicker towards to the top. The design was inspired by an elegant pinstripe suit. The Maybach lettering places the brand in the spotlight. The radiator grille rests on two aerodynamically shaped supports on the outer right and left of the bumper.

Long wheelbase, expressive rim design

The extremely long wheelbase of the Mercedes-Maybach models enables a luxuriously spacious passenger compartment which benefits the rear passengers in particular. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class outstretches the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz model range – the long-wheelbase S-Class Saloon – by 20 centimetres. The exterior appearance is rounded off by expressive 20-inch wheels in multi-spoke or 20-hole design.

Striking chrome highlights

The choice of materials demonstrates the sublime beauty and perfection which are hallmarks of the brand. Chrome highlights feature above all in the bottom air intakes of the bumpers. The chrome-plated window frame is additionally emphasized by the chromed B-pillar. The C-pillars on either side sport the traditional Mercedes-Maybach logo in the form of a double-M in a curved triangle. Maybach lettering additionally adorns the boot lid. The chrome applications deployed at the front are continued in the rear area, emphasising high quality and elegance.

Interior design: Spaciousness, supreme exclusivity The interior of Mercedes-Maybach vehicles offers a spacious and relaxing setting boasting the ultimate in seating comfort and prestigious designm with diverse scope for individualisation.

Spacious interior, particularly for rear passengers

The long wheelbase of the Mercedes-Maybach vehicles offers crucial advantages for their passengers, who enjoy a maximum of space. This makes travelling in a Mercedes-Maybach a particularly prestigious experience and the pinnacle of comfort – with superlative legroom and maximum comfort when boarding and alighting.

Outstanding seating comfort

The ultimate luxury experience derives in no small way from the First Class seats, which are exclusive to Mercedes-Maybach. The seats with their projecting calf supports in the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class offer special adjustment kinematics for added comfort, for example. The backrest is adjusted separately, which means that the legroom and seat reference point remain unchanged. The maximum backrest angle is 43.5 degrees. The most upright backrest position of 19 degrees allows relaxed working in the rear. The individual seats can be ventilated and heated separately from one another. Select materials and an exclusive leather trim package are also available.

Prestigious design with diverse scope for individualisation

Mercedes-Maybach vehicles surround their passengers with specific architecture, fine materials and a clearly designed interior. Including hand-stitched door trims, appointments in exclusive highlight colours and diverse high-quality details such as copper-, gold- or platinum-coloured topstitching. Individualisation plays a major role here: five more exclusive equipment and design lines were added to the range of interior options for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in 2018, for example.

UI/UX: The ultimate in comfort

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, which was shown at Auto China in Beijing, offers a special variation of the Mercedes-Maybach user experience. Characteristic features are the light and appealing colour spectrum from white to rose gold, the sophisticated design and craftsmanship and special high-quality comfort items.

Rose gold and glass symbolise sublime beauty

Contrasting light elements against a dark background characterise the user interface of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury. The interplay of light and dark and the use of glass further reinforce the luxurious yet light overall impression. Colours such as rose gold and sensual patterns add contrasting highlights. In the hyper-analogue instruments the pointers move over a round, crystal-look display.

Blending the digital and analogue worlds

Like a butler, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury acts with anticipation, instead of offering long menus and lists. The digital and analogue worlds blend seamlessly into one. The vehicle plays music to match the current mood, knows the appointment calendar and plans the routes accordingly. In the rear, various flavours of tea and relaxation programmes are on offer, depending on who the rear passenger is. This is a luxury feature that can also be found in the user interface.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury: Crossover of high-end saloon and SUV

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury represents the brand’s design values in a fascinating way, and offers a new interpretation of ultimate luxury. The show car combines the comfort of a high-end saloon with the strengths of an SUV. These include the raised seating position and the athletic looks.

Smooth, dynamic surfaces with no beads or sharp edges conjure up a picture of sporty elegance. With its balanced proportions, the vehicle has tremendous presence. In combination with the low-profile front headlamps with three lamp units, the Mercedes-Maybach-specific grille dominates the front view of the vehicle while emphasising its brand affiliation. The large air inlets along with the horizontal air inlet with integral chrome blades underline the sportiness of the SUV saloon while lending it a dynamic look. The air inlets are crossed by the brand’s typical honeycomb pattern.

The upright C-pillar, long, gently forward-sloping bonnet and compact notchback dominate the sportily elegant side view. At the rear end, the three-part lamps are reminiscent of the design of the front headlamps. Situated above them is the visually vertically split rear window. Another striking feature is the modelled underride guard with diffuser look, which also incorporates the front-end Maybach pattern.

The interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury features an exciting contrast between high-level sportiness and luxurious spaciousness. Exclusive materials with high-grade highlights exude exquisite quality in the interior. Exclusivity and quality are underscored by the use of colours such as rose gold, crystal white and pearl grey. Flowing forms, delicate fabrics and aluminium parts create a contrast between the sportily elegant details of an SUV and the lightness of a saloon.

Wave-like, flowing lines of light are integrated flush into the wood surfaces, blending the analogue and digital worlds. The tailored seat upholstery layouts take up the lines of the trim while giving a reinterpretation to the typical diamond shape. The fine perforations are in rosé gold.

The wide centre console extends through to the rear. It is equipped with an integral, heated tray with teapot and cups, allowing exquisite tea-drinking enjoyment while on the road.

Exclusive furniture collection of timeless aesthetic appeal

The designers have evolved a furniture collection to match the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury. It comprises two pieces of lounge furniture, a two- and a three-seater sofa. A coffee table and an occasional table also feature. Inviting lounge chairs on which to relax complete the ensemble alongside planters and coordinating lamps.

All the pieces of furniture follow the same design idiom. With their distinctive shape, the clear silhouette and the attractive surface they convey the design philosophy of Sensual Purity to non-automotive objects. The star of the collection is the sofa, which has been designed as a two- and three-seater variant. The pristine crystal white leather cushion has a high-gloss polished rose gold metal frame. Metal and leather are strictly, precisely separated from one another by painstaking attention to detail.

All the pieces of furniture sport the same mixture of materials and are radiant in white leather and in electroplated rosé gold metal. Contrasts of colors and materials come courtesy of the glove-soft white nappa leather which is also predominant in the interior of the show car and stands for abundance, plus the fine metal sheen of the rosé gold on the backs of the furniture, symbolizing high tech.

A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The grille was inspired by a pinstriped suit. It celebrated its world première in the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, the exclusive coupé concept car which thrilled connoisseurs and fans of the brand in 2016. The exterior appearance of the top-of-the-range model is rounded off by the 20-inch wheel in 10-hole design known from the Mercedes-Maybach. For an even more individual appearance, the range of paint finishes by customer demand now also includes the two-tone paint finishes presented with the Mercedes-Maybach S‑Class. The new exclusive colours magma grey, mahogany brown and silk beige/deep sea blue are available in the interior.

Its length of 6.50 metres alone is a sign of the special status of the Mercedes‑Maybach Pullman. It provides space for a generously sized and tastefully appointed club lounge in the rear, with a multitude of creature comforts fitted as standard, thereby ensuring the chauffeur-driven limousine lives up to today’s expectations of what constitutes maximum exclusivity and luxury. The VIP occupants sit on two standard-specification executive seats facing the direction of travel. They can enjoy the largest legroom in the segment; and can get in and out of the car with the greatest of ease and comfort. As is typical for a Pullman, the four passengers can sit facing each other in the compartment with an electrically operated partition. Also new for the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman is a front view camera. Rear passengers are thus able to monitor the traffic in front of the vehicle even when the partition screen is closed.

The “2 cabin sound” feature of the sound system offers more exclusivity than ever before. Thanks to independent control for the front and rear passenger compartment, the occupants of the Pullman enjoy even more personalised music. The price of the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman starts at around half a million euro.

The V12 biturbo engine of the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman now has an output of 463 kW (630 hp). Technical data at a glance:

Mercedes-Maybach: Exterior Design

In its exterior design, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines stylish, effortless superiority with trend-setting exclusivity

In its exterior design, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines stylish, effortless superiority with trend-setting exclusivity. The vehicle makes modern luxury (in the truest sense of the word) come alive in an exceptional way. Along with the extended wheelbase, emphatic lines suggest power and dynamism. Due to the sidewall’s special design, characteristic design elements for the S-Class are retained such as the sweeping, dome-shaped roofline.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

The key distinguishing feature is the new side line: by comparison with the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the striking rear door has been shortened by 66 mm and therefore appears to seamlessly meld into the overall composition. The door has no triangular window. This has been relocated into the C-pillar. As a result, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cutout, which creates a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity. The triangular windows and other glass areas alike have chrome surrounds. The B-pillar is also covered in chrome. The elegant Maybach Manufaktur logo – a double M inside an arched triangle – adorns the C-pillars on both sides. What is more, exclusive 20-inch (50.8 cm) forged, light-alloy wheels are available for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Instead of delicate spokes, their design features large surfaces to underline the flagship model’s high-quality look.

Overall the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is 207 mm longer than the S-Class with long wheelbase. 200 mm of this is the result of the extension between the B and C-pillar. All this additional space is used to boost comfort for rear passengers.

Subtle yet noticeable changes in both the front and rear area differentiate the longest S-Class from its smaller siblings. Three double louvres in chrome within the radiator trim have a formative influence on the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s elegant look. Additional vertical chrome trim discreetly but deeply underlines the special appeal of this extraordinary vehicle. This theme is taken up once again in the design at the tail end.

The key features of the front end design:

  • Dominant radiator trim with large radiator opening and three double louvres in chrome
  • Subtle vertical chrome trim
  • Double trim in the air intakes on the right and left
  • Double trim in the bottom end piece of the bumpers

The emphatic design for the sides draws to an effective conclusion at the rear. The chrome double louvres deployed at the front are continued in the rear area, emphasising high quality and elegance.

Key features of the rear end design:

  • Horizontal lines emphasise the vehicle’s width
  • Two tailpipe trim elements in chrome integrated into the bumper with vertical partition
  • Chrome double louvres in the bottom section of the bumper covering add the perfect finishing touch to the vehicle
  • Maybach lettering on the boot lid (mounted on the left in direction of travel)

Mercedes-Maybach: Aerodynamics

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is maintaining the brand's leading position when it comes to aerodynamics

With a similar drag coefficient to the S-Class, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is maintaining the brand’s leading position when it comes to aerodynamics.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

  • A whole raft of aerodynamic optimisations has been implemented:
  • Wheel spoilers with aerodynamically optimised contour ahead of the front wheels
  • Large area of cladding on the rear axle
  • Aerodynamically efficient design of the front and rear aprons and the rear spoiler
  • Optimised exterior mirror design with mirror base
  • Sealed headlamp surrounds
  • Improved sealing of the radiator section and flow properties to make efficient use of the available cooling air
  • Streamlined water drainage channels
  • Speed-dependent lowering of the vehicle by up to 20 mm
  • Spoiler lip on each tail light
  • Aerodynamically optimised underbody with extensive engine compartment and underbody panelling

Mercedes-Maybach: Aeroacoustics

Inside the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the level of wind noise is impressively low and, despite the large windows

Inside the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the level of wind noise is impressively low and, despite the large windows, betters even the quietest car in the world – the S-Class Coupé. For passengers in the rear, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the world’s quietest production saloon car. Extensive measurements were also taken in experimental vehicles considering the fully reclined position in the rear. That is because positioning the passenger away from the side windows and towards the rear window and triangular windows creates a new acoustic situation.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Special seals optimise the noise insulation, thereby ensuring excellent aeroacoustic performance in the rear. These include seals over the C joints in the rear doors, which have a hose profile rather than the usual lip seal, as well as bonded triangular windows with a special seal.

Other measures in the rear compartment are a generous area of insulation around the single seats extending from the seat cushion over the rear panel to the parcel shelf. Intelligent air ducting around the parcel shelf reduces the intrusion of noise, and sealed inertia reels on the seat belts prevent possible disturbing sounds. The textile underbody and wheel arch lining have an insulating and absorptive effect, which reduces high-frequency tyre noise in the interior.

A new aeroacoustic wind tunnel at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre in Sindelfingen became operational in September 2013 and played a crucial part in achieving excellent, quiet running. For example, the conveyor belt/balance system there is integrated into a turntable with a diameter of twelve metres. This means that test vehicles can also to be subjected to an angled flow of air in order to simulate crosswinds.

As a result, experts in aeroacoustics were able to study the perfect design for the door structure of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class under wind load. The door seal must fit closely even when subjected to a constant or gusty sidewind such as would be encountered when passing a truck, on bridges, in wooded areas or when driving on a coastal road. Despite negative pressure on the side away from wind, the door must never be pulled more than a few millimetres away from the seal. Large doors are particularly susceptible to this phenomenon because strength is a product of (negative) pressure and area.

Mercedes-Maybach: A Sense of Spaciousness

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven. For the driver and any front passenger, there have been no compromises compared with a “normal” S-Class. Here, however, the real sense of spaciousness is to be found in the rear. The benefits of extending the wheelbase by 200 mm are felt entirely in the back of the vehicle where the specification has been refined even more. Due to the roofline, it was also possible to further raise the head clearance.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

A clear indication that the owner of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will typically be found in the second row are the standard-fit executive seats on the left and right. These rear seats offer a unique level of comfort thanks to a special adjustment kinematics system. In contrast to the norm, the backrest is adjusted separately while the footwell and seat reference point remain unchanged. The cushion can be adjusted separately, with inclination and horizontal adjustment combined.

For the executive seats, the maximum backrest angle is 43.5 degrees. The most upright backrest position of 19 degrees allows relaxed working in the rear. The reclining seats feature a calf support, which is freely adjustable for length and angle. As standard, the luxury head restraints come with an extra cushion.

The Chauffeur package is also part of the standard equipment. A “chauffeur position” for the front passenger seat is one of the key components: due to changes to the kinematics system, the rear seat occupant on the front-passenger side has 77 mm more footroom compared with a normal front passenger seat in the furthest forward seat position. In addition to this “chauffeur position”, the front passenger seat can be folded forward and the rear seat placed in an extended recline position for breaks. EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints come as standard for the driver and passenger, and the one on the front-passenger side is folding. For the rear passenger, the Chauffeur package also includes a heel support, which extends from under the front passenger seat. This allows a reclined position that sets new standards in the automotive sector with respect to sleeping and resting comfort.

Individual seat functions in the rear, and those of the chauffeur seat, are of course electrically operated via the typical Mercedes control panels in the rear doors. The rear armrest has a double cup holder, stowage space and wood trim.

As an option, it is possible to boost comfort for rear passengers even further. The Rear Seat Comfort package includes individually adjustable multicontour seats, for example, and an ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle.

The First-Class rear suite (centre console in the rear) is a visual continuation of the front console on the centre tunnel. It is equipped with innovative thermo cup holders, which use Peltier technology to cool or warm drinks over a longer period of time.

Like an aircraft seat, the centre console is available with two tables which can be easily folded in or out using one hand. Two articulated joints on the stem and underside of the table enable it to be adjusted to almost any position. The table supports and surface are made of a light alloy, combining great stability with a high-quality look. The table surfaces have leather inserts to provide a comfortable writing surface.

To deliver maximum climatic control in the rear compartment, there is a second, standard-fitted THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system in the rear with two additional climate zones for the rear seats. A control panel on the back of the centre console allows the temperature and air distribution to be set individually for the left and right sides. For targeted climate control, there are two nozzles in the centre console and also on the B-pillars and in the rear footwell. Using COMAND Online, the driver can conveniently adjust the automatic climate control system for the back of the vehicle too.

As exclusive optional equipment (standard in the Mercedes-Maybach S 600), there is the AIR-BALANCE package including ionisation, enhanced air filtration and fragrancing with AGARWOOD, the exclusive Maybach perfume (see section on appointments).

Mercedes-Maybach: A New Sub-Brand Offering Peerless Exclusivity

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. Mercedes-Maybach motor cars epitomise peerless exclusivity. Some of the features that distinguish these vehicles from production models include extra spaciousness with lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualisation. As a result, the cars fulfil the requirements of even the most discerning customers worldwide.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach S 600

Mercedes-Maybach is not an equipment line – it is a sub-brand that in future will provide Mercedes-Benz vehicles in an even more exclusive form. Alongside Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach is thus the second sub-brand in the Mercedes-Benz brand world. Providing both prestige and exclusivity, it is aimed at customers for whom status is important.

The market launch of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is scheduled for February 2015. The top-of-the-range model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600. Its V12 biturbo engine has an output of 390 kW (530 hp). With a displacement of 5980 cc, the maximum torque of 830 Nm is available from 1900 rpm. The V8 biturbo engine in the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 generates an output of 335 kW (455 hp) from a displacement of 4663 cc. Its peak torque is 700 Nm. NEDC combined fuel consumption for the saloon is just 8.9 litres/100 km (premium petrol). CO2 emissions are 207 g/km. The Mercedes-Maybach S 500 4MATIC will also be available from June 2015.

Inside the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the level of wind noise is impressively low and in the rear, despite the large windows, betters even the quietest car in the world – the S-Class Coupé. For passengers in the rear, the Mercedes‑Maybach S-Class is the world’s quietest production saloon car.

In its exterior design, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class combines stylish, effortless superiority with trend-setting exclusivity. The vehicle makes modern luxury come alive in an exceptional way. Along with the extended wheelbase, emphatic lines suggest power and dynamism. Due to the sidewall’s special design, characteristic design elements for the S-Class are retained such as the sweeping, dome-shaped roofline.

The key distinguishing feature is the new side line: by comparison with the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the striking rear door has been shortened by 66 mm and therefore appears to meld seamlessly into the overall composition. The door has no triangular window because this has been relocated into the C-pillar. As a result, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cutout, which creates a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity. The elegant Maybach Manufaktur logo – a double M inside an arched triangle – adorns the C-pillars on both sides.

In the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, passengers are enveloped in lounge-style, modern luxury. With its clear architecture, refined materials and stylish controls, the vehicle embodies a sensuous elegance. For an exclusive look, the front centre armrests with nappa leather or exclusive nappa leather upholstery feature embossed Maybach crests. Another special feature in the dashboard is the analogue clock with an IWC design.

The high quality standards of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are impressively evident from the doors, which even have handstitched door trim as part of the standard equipment. This extravagance is part of the interior’s luxurious, hand-finished “Manufaktur” character. Exclusive features used in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are trim parts in wood/chrome and leather at shoulder height in the door panels, chrome-plated tweeter grilles and fibre-optic cables for the ambience lighting to the side on the armrest. Together they create a unique atmosphere conveying a sense of capacious style.

As the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz model range, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class satisfies the very highest requirements in terms of luxury appointments and comfort. In addition to all the amenities of the conventional S-Class, a number of exclusive interior touches underscore the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s ambition to lead. These include the exclusive Maybach perfume AGARWOOD for fragrancing as part of the AIR-BALANCE package and two silver-plated, handcrafted champagne flutes (both optional extras). Voice amplification is a novel function emphasising the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s positioning as a chauffeur-driven vehicle, which makes it much easier for occupants in the front to communicate with the rear passengers. The Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system offers a unique optical and acoustic experience. As a visual highlight, the tweeters in the rear doors of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are particularly sophisticated and can also be moved towards the passengers in a spiral motion.

Mercedes-Maybach S-Class Caught On Video

A Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has been filmed in a parking lot ahead of the model's market launch scheduled for next month

A Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has been filmed in a parking lot ahead of the model’s market launch scheduled for next month.

It takes a keen eye to spot the visual differences between the regular S-Class and its Maybach sibling but the latter does come with 66mm shorter rear doors while the third side windows are positioned after the doors to create the “feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity.” Compared to a LWB S-Class, the Maybach model is 200mm longer (at 5453mm) and all the added length can be seen in the stretched wheelbase which now stands at 3365mm. Other exterior changes include Maybach-specific alloy wheels, the compulsory badging & lettering along with a slightly reworked front grille.

Most of the changes have occurred inside the cabin, specifically in the back where passengers are pampered with an enormous amount of legroom and standard executive seats. These have backrests and cushions individually adjustable while the standard chauffeur package adds 77mm more legroom to the rear seat occupant on the front passenger side. If this isn’t enough, the front passenger seat can be folded forward to grant an extended reclining position of the rear seat.

As a reminder, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is billed as being the “quietest car in the world” and will be initially available in the S600 specification with a V12 twin-turbo 6.0-liter outputting 530 HP & 830 Nm. Shortly after its market introduction, the range-topping S-Class will also be offered as an S500 model with a V8 4.7-liter bi-turbo generating 455 HP & 700 Nm along with a lesser S400 4MATIC packing a V6 3.0-liter with 333 HP & 480 Nm. Don’t hold your breath for AMG versions as Daimler has excluded this possibility.

As an addition to the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sets new benchmarks in the luxury segment. At 5453 mm long and with a wheelbase of 3365 mm, the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz model range is 20 cm larger in both dimensions than the S-Class Saloon with long wheelbase.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is specifically designed to be chauffeur-driven. For the driver and any front passenger, there have been no compromises compared with a “normal” S-Class. Here, however, the real sense of spaciousness is to be found in the rear. The wheelbase of the saloon, the quietest in the world for rear-seat passengers, has been extended by 200 mm, the full extent of which benefits those sitting in the back. The roof line also means that there is more headroom.

The seat belt buckle extender, beltbag (both part of the PRE-SAFE® rear package, beltbag also available separately) and seat cushion airbag are innovative safety features in the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class that contribute to its unique flair.

A new function underscoring the positioning of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class as a chauffeur-driven vehicle is its voice amplification system. This innovative function makes it easier to communicate with the rear passengers from the front. The two microphones in the interior mirror are also used to pick up speech for the hands-free telephone system. These signals are then discreetly amplified depending on the amount of driving noise, and continuously adjusted for the speaker’s volume and the ambient noise level.

The top-of-the-range model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600. Its V12 biturbo engine has an output of 390 kW (530 hp). It has a displacement of 5980 cc and maximum torque of 830 Nm from 1900 rpm.

The V8 biturbo engine in the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 generates an output of 335 kW (455 hp) from a displacement of 4663 cc. This model has a maximum torque of 700 Nm, available from just 1800 rpm. NEDC fuel consumption (combined) for the saloon is a mere 8.9 litres of premium petrol/100 km, while CO2 emissions stand at 207 g/km.

Media reports have said that Mercedes is developing a Maybach SUV based on the GL. Mercedes sales chief Ola Kaellenius said: “I don’t want to categorically rule anything out, but at this stage we have no plans for it [a Maybach SUV].”

Daimler also has no plans for Maybach hybrids but executives did not rule out adding hybrid variants in the future.

Daimler scrapped the Maybach brand in 2012 because of disappointing sales. Maybach deliveries peaked at about 600 cars in 2003, while its rivals, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, have gone on to post sales records.

Kaellenius told reporters here on Tuesday that Maybach will be reborn as a subbrand offering luxury and individualization for status-oriented buyers with the most discriminating tastes.

When asked whether the S 600 would compete with ultraluxury brands Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Kaellenius said: “I am completely convinced that we can win customers in the highest segment.”

Kaellenius said the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 will cost less than Maybach sedans sold between 2002 and 2012. Prices will be disclosed on Dec. 18. The sedan “will be positioned in a price segment below the earlier Maybachs with a spaciousness and driving performance that fulfills the ultimate demands,” he said.

He said Mercedes-Maybach sales would be “significantly above” previous volumes of the old Maybach, of which more than 3,000 were built over its 10-year lifespan.

There are currently no plans to expand Maybach into lower segments such as the E class, which is positioned immediately below the S class.

The Maybach S 600 has a wheelbase stretched by 200mm to give it a roomier interior. Some of the features that distinguish it from the standard-production models include extra spaciousness, special seats and lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualization, Daimler said.

The sedan also offers the quietest interior in the rear of the passenger cabin even when matched against rival models from Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Daimler said.

Although the Maybach S 600 is shorter than the Maybach 57, Kaellenius said the feeling of spaciousness inside the car was bigger. Asked whether Mercedes planned an even longer version for customers who bought the Maybach 62, which was more than 6000mm long, Kaellenius said: “We shall see.”

Mercedes has sold more than 100,000 units of the S-class models since the start of this year, which Kaellenius said was roughly the volume of the Audi A8 and BMW 7 series combined.

As an independent brand, Maybach — named after an early collaborator of Gottlieb Daimler, one of the automaker’s founders — failed to mount a serious challenge for ultraluxury buyers because it lacked global name recognition.

“It’s a much better fit to reactivate Maybach as a subbrand of the S class than to try to artificially build up a brand history,” said Daniel Schwarz, an analyst with Commerzbank in Frankfurt. “The S class is already a strong brand and can be leveraged even further.”
