2013 Mercedes AMG Sales Set Record

2013 was the most successful year in the history for Mercedes AMG with around 32,200 sports and performance models sold

2013 was the most successful year ever in the history of Mercedes-AMG. With around 32,200 sports cars and performance models sold, the Mercedes-Benz’s performance brand reached a new sales record.

“We are looking back on the company’s strongest year ever,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “This extraordinary growth has exceeded even our own expectations. It shows once again that with our “AMG Performance 50″ growth strategy, we’re on the right track. It’s a strategy we will continue to build on.”

Strong performance in main markets

In its three biggest markets US, Germany and UK, the Affalterbach-based company recorded strong demand in 2013, driven by new products and the extension of its distribution network. Among the factors driving this growth was the broad introduction of the all-wheel drive 4MATIC, newly developed by AMG with focus on performance aspects: the facelifts of the E 63 AMG as well as the CLS 63 AMG are now available with AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology and as powerful S-Model. There was also increasing demand for Mercedes-AMG’s SUV models and the new compact cars A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. The product offensive is rounded off by the recently introduced S 63 AMG, which is facing highest demands.

Through the product offensive and the introduction of the compact CLA 45 AMG in 2013, Mercedes-AMG was able to steadily increase its sales in the main market USA: With a growth of around 20 percent, the sales volume was considerably above the previous year’s level. AMG’s two main European markets, Germany (up 10 percent) and the UK (up 40 percent) posted strong sales, despite the overall market weakness in the EU. Both markets exceeded their 2013 sales targets.

Along with the main markets Mercedes-AMG also posted significant growth in Japan, China, Canada, Russia and Brazil. In the growth market of China, 2013 sales were up around a quarter on the previous year, although the new entry-level A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG models, as well as the new S 63 AMG 4MATIC, will not be available there this year.

Growth potential from increased number of model variations

This dynamic growth of the performance brand has been made possible by the expansion of the product range and entering attractive new segments. With the sporty A 45 AMG, the four-door coupe CLA 45 AMG and the GLA 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG is offering three new entry-level models. Aimed at customers in their thirties to mid-forties, these models are an attempt by AMG to reach out to new target groups. All three models are equipped with AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology and the world’s most powerful four-cylinder production engine.

At the upper ends of the vehicle range, new AMG models of the S-Class and E-Class were introduced in 2013 as well as a new CLS 63 AMG. The E-Class and the CLS 63 AMG are also available as ultra-powerful S-Model and, for the first time, with all-wheel drive. The new vehicles and technology packages have been a hit right from the start: Around 90 percent of buyers of the new E 63 AMG chose AMG all-wheel drive 4MATIC technology. The SLS AMG super sports car has also racked up impressive sales: Since the first model in this series rolled off the production line in the spring of 2010, over 10,000 SLS AMGs have been sold. Later this year, AMG plans to enter a new segment with a sports car it has fully developed itself.

Extending the distribution network

The AMG Performance Centers are a central plank of the AMG Performance 50 growth strategy. These sales points, which have been part of the Mercedes-Benz distribution network since 2008, create optimal market reach. The centers have their own distinct branding and focus on AMG performance brand products and concepts, as well as on the individualisation options that form part of the designo range. At the end of the year, Mercedes-AMG had a total of 375 AMG performance centers in 27 countries. Further sites are being planned in order to build on the excellent customer service that AMG customers expect.

Innovation and development skills at the Affalterbach plant

In 2013 the company again proved itself to be the Daimler Group’s standard-bearer when it comes to technological innovation. AMG engineers at the Affalterbach site cover every aspect of the vehicle development process and are involved in the development processes of Mercedes-Benz at the earliest possible stage. For example, in addition to the new 4MATIC drive system all four-wheel-drive models launched in 2013 have axle components developed of Mercedes-AMG as well as completely new front axles. The four-wheel-drive models underline the claim of leadership in the respective segment in interaction with the specific suspension. Apart from that, the company also develops its own sports cars. As the first vehicle to be fully developed by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG is proof of the competence and passion that exist at the company in Affalterbach. And last year, AMG was also responsible for bringing the world’s most powerful electric super sports car to market, the SLS AMG coupe Electric Drive. The all-electric SLS AMG combines innovations in material combination of aluminium and CRP (carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic) and the newly developed powerful battery and inherits an outstanding driving dynamic thanks to AMG Torque Dynamics. In addition, the lightweight construction strategy known as AMG Lightweight Performance was applied throughout the development of the electric SLS AMG and the new S-Class. The new S 63 AMG weighs up to 100 kilograms less than its predecessor.

From a two-man company to a high-performance brand

AMG (Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach) was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and from the very outset achieved numerous successes in the field of motorsport. Today, the former two-man company employs a workforce of more than 1,200 at its plant in Affalterbach, and over the past 47 years has become the technological spearhead and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. The AMG brand promise of ‘Driving Performance’ stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement in all four business divisions. Alongside the development of high-performance vehicles, AMG’s second business division, Sport Packages & Models, provides an entry into the world of AMG. AMG’s performance specialists were closely involved in the development of the A 250 Sport and CLA 250 Sport. The sport models “engineered by AMG” were in high demand in 2013 as well and were handed over to more than 12,000 customers. Special customer specifications are carried out in the third business division, the AMG Performance Studio, where individualised AMG vehicles are developed and produced in strictly limited editions. The fourth business division, Driving Academy & Motorsports, has also achieved considerable success. Last year, the AMG Driving Academy hosted over 11,000 participants worldwide and was able to enhance its customer offering with new events in the United Arab Emirates and Poland. And of course the performance brand has remained true to its motor racing roots, chalking up impressive wins on international circuits with the SLS AMG GT3.

Mercedes-Benz Once Again King of Luxury Cars

Mercedes-Benz beats out December sales surge from BMW to become top-selling luxury car brand

Mercedes-Benz took back the crown from rival luxury brand BMW, after BMW had held the title of top-selling car brand for two years straight.  Even with an end of the year sales surge from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, with its vast vehicle lineup, was able to beat BMW’s sales and set an annual record for sales in the process.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Celebrates Over One Million in Sales

The B-Class Electric Drive will come to the US in 2014, increasing Mercedes sales in the electric vehicle segment

Mercedes-Benz isn’t just celebrating the new year this week, they are also celebrating sales of their B-Class.  Since it’s launch in 2005, the B-Class has sold over one million units. The sports tourer has done especially well in the German market and is the market leader in the compact MPV sector. Around 30 percent of B-Class customers previously drove a different brand of vehicle. Germany is the biggest market for theB-Class, followed by China.  But, with the B-Class Electric Drive making it’s debut in the US in 2014, sales will continue to grow in here as well.

“The B-Class is the perfect combination of sporty design, impressive driving dynamics and incomparable driving comfort,” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Divisional Board Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales. “That’s what makes it so popular with our customers. What has been particularly noticeable with the current model is that we are reaching the most diverse customer groups, from families with children to active seniors.”

The B-Class is also very popular with fleet customers. In 2013 it was again voted Corporate Car of the Year. The most popular engines worldwide for the B-Class are currently the B 180 petrol and diesel engines, which each account for around 30 percent. Half of all the B-Class vehicles sold are fitted with a navigation and infotainment system. Also particularly popular are the Night Package and the bi-xenon headlamps.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the B-Class in 2005. Following on from the A-Class, the spacious sports tourer was Mercedes-Benz’s second compact model. The B-Class is produced at the plants Rastatt in Germany and Kecskemét in Hungary. Rastatt is the centre of excellence for compact car production within the global Mercedes-Benz production network.

In 2011, the second generation of the B-Class came onto the market. This was the first model from Mercedes-Benz’s new compact car generation. And the B-Class ushered in a further revolution in safety technology: for the first time in the compact class, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system was fitted as standard. This radar-assisted collision warning system with adaptive brake assist warns the driver when he is too close to the vehicle in front and, if necessary, applies full braking power. The B-Class also stands out as the only vehicle in its class to come with optional all-wheel drive.

2014 sees the launch of two new alternative drive technologies for the B-Class. Available in Europe from February, the B 200 Natural Gas Drive is powered by natural gas and is especially efficient and cost-effective to run.

The B-Class Electric Drive, debuting in the US in the second quarter of 2014 and in Europe at the end of 2014 is Mercedes’ contribution to the electric vehicle market.  It has an electric power range of 200 kilometres, a generous interior and five seats, it provides noticeably powerful acceleration, glides along almost noiselessly and is highly suitable for everyday use. The B-Class Electric Drive effortlessly combines dynamism and driving pleasure with a high degree of practicality and zero local emissions.

MBUSA Reports Highest November Earnings on Record

Mercedes-Benz USA November earnings show highest retail volumes in its history with 37,345 Mercedes, Sprinter and smarts Sold

Mercedes-Benz USA has reported the highest November retail volumes in its history with 37,345 units sold across the Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter and smart model lines, up 14.4% from the 32,649 vehicles sold in November 2012. Sales for the Mercedes-Benz brand alone jumped 13.4% over the same period last year to 34,376, while year-to-date volumes hit a record 279,501. Adding year-to-date sales of 18,988 for Sprinter Vans and 8,409 units at smart, MBUSA achieved a year-to-date grand total of 306,898 units, making November the 50th consecutive month of month-over-month sales increases since the streak began in late 2009.

“November’s result has already propelled us past last year’s record sales volume,” said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of MBUSA. “We’re striking a chord with more customers than ever before thanks to a strong product portfolio, the best dealers in the business and a laser focus on the ownership experience.”

November sales for Mercedes-Benz were led by the E-, C- and M-Class model lines. The E-Class, completely redesigned for the 2014 model year, came in first at 8,614 units, followed by the sporty C-Class with sales of 7,878. The M-Class, the brand’s top-selling SUV, rounded out the top three at 4,328, up 11.1% over the same period in 2012.

The Ultimate Car-Buying Experience

Only with Mercedes-Benz can buying a car also be a Luxury Vacation

For most people, the idea of buying a car is almost as uncomfortable as, say, getting a root canal. OK, maybe that’s a little extreme, but you get my point. The endless researching, phone calls to dealerships, the anxiety, the indecision – and that’s all before the negotiations even begin.

What if you could skip all of that? What if buying a car was as pleasant as, say, a luxury vacation?

It can be. But only with Mercedes-Benz.

Enter the Mercedes-Benz European Delivery Program where in short, you get to experience your Mercedes-Benz in its natural environment in conjunction with a top-notch vacation before bringing it home. Now that was a Texas-sized oversimplification, but here’s what happens:

After receiving professional travel assistance for your trip to Germany, you’ll visit the Mercedes-Benz factory at Sindelfingen (truly, a Mercedes-Benz fanatic’s Candyland). Relax into the expert care of the Mercedes-Benz reps who are as top-notch as the brand they work for. You’ll be astounded at the level of care and quality control that goes into each and every aspect of crafting a Mercedes-Benz. Even if you didn’t think it was possible, your respect for the brand will reach new heights!

After a tour of the factory, enjoy a complimentary meal and a tall glass of German beer at the factory’s chic restaurant as you tingle with anticipation at the thought of what’s to come.

Once escorted to your brand new ride, a Mercedes-Benz specialist will give you an extensive tour of its features. From there, the fun really begins. Keys in hand, you’re ushered off for fifteen days of the ultimate road trip experience. With your choice of the top luxury hotels in Germany, world-class meals, a trip to the Mercedes-Benz museum and the option to receive tours through the Black Forest, the snow-capped Austrian Alps and historic Stuttgart, your trip can have as little as or as much structure as you request. One thing I promise, you’ll never forget the feeling of driving out of the factory in your beautiful new car, turning on the Autobahn, and revving up to top speed to whiz down the infamous Highway. Now that’s what I call adrenaline! And trust me, that moment alone is worth the whole trip.

When your trip comes to an end, all you have to do is leave your car at one of the many drop-off points throughout Europe. Before you know it, you’ll be reunited with your baby stateside. And what an amazing intimate experience you will have shared with your Mercedes-Benz even before she’s driven off the docks.

While the notion of the trip pretty much speaks for itself, several other benefits push this experience over the edge. We’re talking a 7% discount on the total vehicle MSRP, one night of complimentary hotel accommodation, MBUSA travel assistance for hotel and airline reservations, a tour of the Sindelfingen factory, two tickets to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, and breakfast or lunch at the Delivery Center – for starters. Let’s not forget the inclusive fifteen days of European road insurance, vehicle transportation to a selected U.S. dealer, two taxi coupons for airport transportation, a full tank of fuel, marine insurance and a waived destination charge. Whew! Now that’s what I call hospitality.

Talk about the ultimate car-buying experience – this is it. It’s only fitting that it’s offered by the ultimate automobile brand. The best or nothing. Period.

Mercedes-Benz September Sales – Best Month Ever

Mercedes-Benz sales continue to grow due to expanded compact range and new E-Class and S-Class models

September was a record month for Mercedes-Benz, the luxury brand sold more vehicles than any other month prior. In total, Mercedes sold 142,994 new cars to customers all around the globe, for a growth of 15.9%.  Since the beginning of 2013, 1,062,638 cars have been sold, an increase of 10.1%. The third quarter was particularly successful for the company in the United States and China which is in part why Mercedes recorded massive growth of 18.0% or 368,201 vehicles sold in the third quarter.

Mercedes-Benz also expanded its market shares in Europe and remains the most-registered premium brand in Germany, Japan and the United States. Much of this growth can be attributed to the compact models and the new E-Class, which was launched to great success. The new S-Class is already leading the way of new vehicle registrations in Germany, and with its launch in the Chinese market in September its global presence and position will be further strengthened.

Mercedes-Benz USA September 2013 Sales

Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) also reported the highest September sales in its history with 27,474 units sold across the Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter and smart model lines—an increase of 5.8% from the 25,980 vehicles sold in September 2012.  Retail volumes for the Mercedes-Benz brand rose 6.7% over the same period last year to 24,697, while year-to-date sales hit a benchmark 215,056 units, up 12.2%. Adding year-to-date sales of 14,940 for Sprinter Vans and 6,937 vehicles at smart, MBUSA’s year-to-date total reached 236,933 units, marking a best-ever third quarter for both the Mercedes-Benz brand and MBUSA.

“We’re making history this month and not just in terms of our record sales pace,” said Steve Cannon, president and CEO of MBUSA. “September marked a recalibration moment for Mercedes-Benz as we began delivery of our new gateway, the CLA, to dealerships across the country. After just over a week on the market, this car sold more than 2,300 units. We’re confident the CLA will be a driving point of our success as we head toward another banner sales year.”

September sales for the Mercedes-Benz brand were led by the C-, E- and M-Class model lines. The sporty C-Class took the top spot at 6,389 units sold, followed by the E-Class with sales of 5,647 vehicles, up 17.0%. MBUSA’s top-selling SUV, the M-Class, rounded out the top three at 3,180 units, a 30.4% increase over the same period last year.

In total, sales of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars climbed 10.9% compared to the first three quarters of 2012, increasing to 138,282 from 124,637. Likewise, the brand’s light truck offerings were up 14.6% from the 66,981 units sold in the first nine months of 2012 to 76,774 in 2013.

The Sprinter model line posted a month-to-date increase of 20.0% to 2,152 units, boosted by sales of the redesigned 2014 lineup which began rolling into dealerships at the beginning of September. Month-to-date volumes at smart reached 625 units.

Sales of Mercedes-Benz’s BlueTEC diesel models were 1,364 in September, up 193.3% from the 465 vehicles sold during the same period last year. The company’s high-performance AMG models finished the month with sales of 675, up 48.4% from September 2012.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt Retires from Mercedes

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing to step down after 34 years with Mercedes-Benz

After more than 34 years of service, and having reached his 65th birthday, Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing and part of the management team at Mercedes-Benz Cars, has decided to hand over his responsibilities to a younger pair of hands. The transfer will formally take place on October 1, 2013. The Daimler Board of Management has named Ola Källenius, currently head of AMG, as his successor. Dr Schmidt will remain available until the end of 2013 to support Mr Källenius in settling into his new role and to offer any advice and assistance.

Joachim Schmidt

Dr. Joachim Schmidt

For over 20 years, Dr Schmidt has served in various sales and marketing management roles and, since October 2009, has been a member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars with responsibility for sales and marketing. In this role, he is also responsible for managing the worldwide national companies and the Executive Committee Sales & Marketing, which comprises the passenger car, van and truck lines.

The Board of Management would like to thank Dr Schmidt for his many years of successful service. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said “Joachim Schmidt understands and embodies Mercedes-Benz like almost no-one else. Under his leadership, the brand has conquered many new regions and delighted its customers with its traditional strengths. He has reconfigured Sales and Marketing and laid the groundwork for bringing Mercedes-Benz into a new era.”

Under Dr Schmidt’s watch, the Mercedes-Benz brand has tapped into important new growth regions and made huge progress in quality and customer satisfaction. He played a central role in the greatest strategic product initiative in the company’s history and helped open up Mercedes-Benz to new, younger target groups. With the initiative “Best Customer Experience” he developed the retail of the future and laid the foundations in sales and marketing for the Mercedes-Benz 2020 growth strategy.

Joachim Schmidt was born on 7 September 1948 in Sindelfingen. He studied mathematics at the University of Stuttgart, obtaining his science doctorate there in 1976. In 1979, he joined what was then known as Daimler-Benz, working initially in passenger car development and then for over 20 years in various sales and marketing management positions.

Ola Källenius as Dr Schmidt’s successor has comprehensive knowledge of the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio and the Daimler sales structures, not least thanks to his role as Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG. “With Ola Källenius we have someone with cars in his blood taking over the reins,” said Dr Zetsche. “He knows what makes a brand a success and has in depth knowledge of our customers and our organisation. We have him to thank for the fact that in recent years AMG has achieved double-digit growth rates and has significantly increased its market leadership in many markets. I am happy he has accepted this position.”

Ola Källenius

Ola Källenius (44) has been Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG since 1 April 2010. Before that, he was plant manager at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Tuscaloosa (USA), led Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth, UK, and worked at McLaren Automotive. Previous roles at Daimler in Stuttgart include head of the Powertrain Procurement unit. Born in Sweden, he began his career on the International Management Associate Program in 1993, at what was then Daimler-Benz. He is a graduate of the Stockholm School of Economics and the University of St. Gallen. A successor to Mr Källenius as Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG will be appointed and announced shortly.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sales Reach Over 10 Million

Since its launch in 1982, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 10 million C-Class models

Since its market launch in 1982, Mercedes-Benz has supplied customers with over 10 million cars of the C-Class family. The brand has sold more than 2.3 million sedans, estates and coupes of the current model series alone since it was unveiled in 2007.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a global success story. Sales of over 10 million C-Class cars speak for themselves. Launched as the ‘Baby Benz’, it is now one of the most popular cars in the premium segment. The innovative engineering and impressive efficiency of the C-Class have been inspiring our customers for more than 30 years.”

C-Class sedans sell extremely well in the US, South Africa and the BRIC countries, while there is particular demand for the estate among customers in Europe. The C-Class coupe tops the registration lists in virtually all markets, including those in the US, Germany and China. The C-Class is also one of the most popular models among business customers. The C-Class estate – which already accounts for nearly a milion sales – was voted 2011 company car of the year in Germany. Most business customers choose the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI Estate for its excellent fuel economy figures.

Outstanding efficiency

Customers who buy a C-Class are particularly impressed by its outstanding efficiency. The C 220 CDI is the most popular engine and the BlueEFFICIENCY edition scores highly for being particularly environmentally friendly. The sedan and coupe models consume just 4.1 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres – equivalent to CO ₂ emissions of 109 grams per kilometre. The C-Class has always been regarded as a pioneer in its segment in terms of its innovative safety systems which include numerous driving assistance systems ranging from ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection to DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control. Together, these provide a comprehensive level of support and protection for driver and passengers.

Expanding the global production network

The C-Class model series are not only in demand throughout the world – from 2014 they will also be the only Mercedes-Benz vehicles to be produced on four continents, being made at plants in Bremen (Germany), East London (South Africa), Beijing (China) and Tuscaloosa (USA). The Mercedes-Benz plant Bremen is also the centre of excellence for the new C-Class generation and it controls the global ramp-up. Well over a million C-Class cars in the current model series alone have already rolled off the production line in Bremen.

Global success story for over 30 years

The C-Class success story began in 1982 when the Mercedes-Benz 190 was launched as a mid-range car. Because it was the smallest car in the Mercedes-Benz range at the time, it soon earned the nickname ‘Baby Benz’. The first car under the C-Class designation was introduced in May 1993 and it marked new ground for Mercedes-Benz, not only in terms of engineering but also because of the wider range of body shapes. The estate introduced by the company in 1996 was the first sporty, mid-range estate car. When Mercedes-Benz launched the next C-Class model series in 2000, it included the sports coupe, a completely new body variant. The entry of the fourth C-Class generation to the market in 2007 also saw the launch of a new design feature. For the first time, the front-end design of a Mercedes-Benz sedan varied according to the equipment line. While the ELEGANCE equipment line features the three-pointed star in its traditional position on the bonnet, it is built into the centre of the radiator grill for the more sporty AVANTGARDE equipment line.

Edition C and Grand Edition – best sellers at the top of their game

Mercedes-Benz Outsells BMW in the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz leads BMW and Lexus so far this year in vehicle sales with 22,501 vehicles sold

Mercedes-Benz saw sales surge 11 percent in January, giving them the lead over BMW in U.S. luxury auto sales for the year.

In January, Mercedes delivered 22,501 vehicles, its best January to date.  Boosting their sales was the C-Class sedan, which rose 11 percent to 7,214 vehicles sold.

As for BMW, vehicles sales increased 0.7 percent to 16,513 vehicles, boosted mainly by a 56 percent gain for its X5 sport-utility vehicle. Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus rose 32 percent to 16,211, led by the ES sedan, which more than doubled to 5,186 deliveries.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW are both fighting against each other to be the top luxury auto brand in the U.S., less concerned with Lexus after outselling them the past two years. In 2012, Mercedes led in sales at the end of November, but with a late December sales surge, BMW took its second consecutive U.S. luxury crown. Lexus was the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S. for 11 years until natural disasters in Asia curtailed production in 2011.

“We’ve set another record this January and are breaking into 2013 at a strong sales pace,” Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, said in a statement.

The sales results don’t include Daimler’s cargo vans and Smart cars and BMW’s Mini brand, which aren’t luxury vehicles.

2011 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van Sales Up 94 Percent

Daimler Vans USA and its network of both Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter dealers sold a total of 16,577 vans

Proving itself as a popular option, sales of Sprinter vans increased an impressive 94 percent for calendar year 2011. In only its second year of operation, Daimler Vans USA and its combined network of both Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter dealers achieved a total of 16,577 vans sold, far surpassing the 2010 result of 8,559. The Mercedes-Benz network alone saw an increase of 172%.

“Our strong, diverse network of 185 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner commercial van dealers spread across the U.S. has enjoyed a banner year of Sprinter van sales. From large fleet operators to small construction businesses and mom-and-pop food trucks, American consumers are discovering the incredible benefits of Sprinter vans,” said Claus Tritt, General Manager of Commercial Vans for Mercedes-Benz USA.

Powered by a fuel-sipping 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel engine, the Sprinter has best-in-class cargo capacity of up to 547 cubic feet and payload capacity up to 5,358 pounds. With cargo doors that open a full 270 degrees, the Sprinter also boasts a rear door opening that’s 5’2″ wide and six feet tall. Both the Cargo and Passenger Vans feature a side-door opening that’s 4’3″ wide and six feet high. At the same time, their step-in height is only 19.9 inches – lowest in the industry. Interior standing height can be up to 6’6″. All versions are equipped with a number of Mercedes-Benz safety features — ESP stability and rollover control, ABS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist and traction control. The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with standard multi-stage front air bags, and side curtain and torso air bags are optionally available.

The Sprinter Van Success Story

The highly successful Mercedes-Benz Sprinter made its European debut in 1995, and a new-generation Sprinter was launched globally in 2006. Since 2001, the Sprinter has been sold in the U.S. by Freightliner, the industry’s leading manufacturer of medium and heavyduty trucks in North America. Complete with many Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features, the U.S. line-up includes the Cargo Van, Passenger Van, MiniBus, Cab Chassis and the new Crew Van. Mercedes-Benz USA began offering the Sprinter line through select Mercedes-Benz dealers in 2010. Both MBUSA and Freightliner are divisions of Daimler AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.

BlueTEC Diesel with DEF Injection

All Sprinters are powered by an innovative 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel engine that attains an impressive 24.9 miles per gallon on the highway. Marking the first-ever use of super-clean BlueTEC technology in the commercial van market, the BlueTEC diesel engine is as clean as a modern gasoline engine. A Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection system reduces nitrogen oxides to harmless nitrogen and water in a downstream catalytic converter.
