Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL Overview

Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-CELL is a compact five-seater with battery-powered electric drive and a range over 200km

Following the B-Class F-CELL fuel-cell car, Mercedes-Benz now introduces the new A-Class E-CELL as its second electric car built in series-production conditions. The five-seater with battery-powered electric drive meets all the requirements for a family car for everyday use. It is based on the five-door version of the current A-Class, and features a generously dimensioned interior and luggage compartment for maximum versatility. No compromises have been necessary in terms of space and variability, with compact storage batteries that are located extremely well-protected and in a space-saving way in the vehicle underbase. The car’s two high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries provide a range of over 200 km (NEDC). The car is powered by a quiet, locally emission-free electric drive with peak output of 70 kW (95 hp), developing a high torque of 290 Nm. A total production run of 500 A-Class E-CELL cars will be built at Rastatt from autumn 2010. The vehicles will be leased to selected customers in several European countries, including Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Five doors, five seats, the same luggage compartment volume as in the internal combustion engine A-Class (435 to 1370 litres), a 350-kilogram payload measured as per the relevant EC directive and high variability of the interior and luggage compartment: this is what makes the new A-Class E-CELL a family car for everyday use. The sophisticated sandwich structure provides both an extremely comfortable in-car environment and maximum protection for passengers and components in the event of a collision.

“Over our almost 125-year history, we have accumulated extensive experience and knowhow in the area of electric vehicles, including both battery and fuel-cell. This knowhow has already provided the basis for getting two electric cars for everyday use onto the road: the smart fortwo electric drive, and the B-Class F-CELL. The story now continues with our third electric car, the A-Class E-CELL., whose start of production is scheduled for autumn this year. The new car is a battery-driven electric Mercedes that enlarges our portfolio and offers our customers the kind of driving pleasure, comfort and safety that they have come to expect”, says Dr Thomas Weber, the Daimler AG Board of Management member responsible for Group Research and Development Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Driving pleasure with zero emissions

Along with exemplary safety, optimum comfort and a high level of suitability for daily use, the A-Class E-CELL also offers other strengths not always to be found in contemporary electric cars: agility and driving pleasure. The features are based on a low centre of gravity, partly the result of the installation of the batteries under the passenger compartment, in the “sandwich” structure of the vehicle floor. This gives the car excellent road-holding and sprightly handling characteristics – qualities that clearly set the A-Class E-CELL apart from other electric cars, which often have heavy and bulky storage batteries located in the boot or by the rear seat. Another benefit from this installation location is the provision of best-possible protection against the intrusion of structural components in the event of a head-on collision or impact from the rear. This is because the batteries are located outside the vehicle body’s deformation zones. The high-stability characteristics of the sandwich structure of the floor also provide outstanding protection for both battery and passengers in a lateral collision scenario.

High-performance electric drive with long range

The electric drive of the A-Class E-CELL is a permanent-field synchronous unit developing a peak output of 70 kW (95 hp), a continuous power rating of 50 kW (68 hp) and a high maximum torque of 290 Nm, as expected for an electric drive, available right from the first revolution. This makes the A-Class E-CELL an outstandingly assured and dynamic performer on the road, taking just 5.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 km/h. A kick-down function is used to deliver maximum acceleration, according to the current charge level and battery temperature. Maximum speed is electronically set at 150 km/h.

The energy storage units are two high-performance lithium-ion batteries based on high-voltage technology. The advantages of lithium-ion batteries include their compact dimensions and significantly higher efficiency in comparison with nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries. They offer 30 percent more energy density than NiMH technology, and 50 percent more power density. Other benefits include high charging efficiency and a long service life. The combined energy capacity of the two lithium-ion batteries is a total of 36 kWh. With fully charged batteries, the A-Class E-CELL has a range of over 200 kilometres (NEDC).

Efficient battery cooling system

A special thermomanagement system keeps the high-voltage batteries cooled to within an optimum temperature window. The cooling system is based on a low-temperature cooling circuit. Fluid cooling with a water-glycol mixture ensures a stable operating temperature supporting the high degree of efficiency and the longevity of the energy storage. In very high ambient temperature conditions, the battery cooling system is boosted with the coolant circuit of the air-conditioning system. The electrical drive system and two on-board chargers are cooled with a high-temperature cooling circuit. This circuit keeps the units working at optimum operating temperatures, with maximum power delivery from the drive system. The car’s power electronics supply the 12-volt vehicle electrical system via a DC/DC converter with electric current from the high-voltage system. The electronics system also controls other functions such as the heating and air-conditioning systems in order to minimise the load placed on the battery for this purpose.

Flexible charging options

The batteries of the A-Class E-CELL can be either replenished at public charging points or plugged into an ordinary household power socket. A range of charging options are available, including single-phase 230-volt sockets, three-phase sockets in a household wall-box, and public recharging points. Using a single-phase 230-volt network, it takes around eight hours’ charging time to accumulate the energy required for a range of 100 km (NEDC). This time is reduced to just three hours in the case of charging from a wall-box or at a roadside recharging point.

Daimler and a number of other European automakers and energy utilities have agreed on standardised charging plugs and sockets, with an ultimate aim of worldwide standardisation. This makes the technology more customer-friendly, and is seen as a key prerequisite for the rapid spread of electric mobility.

Intelligent charging management

Like the smart fortwo electric drive in its category, the A-Class E-CELL is the world’s first vehicle in its class to be fitted with an intelligent charging management system based on “SmartCharge Communication”. Via the vehicle electronics system, all relevant information – such as the electricity supply contract identification data – is exchanged with the charging point. Benefits include a convenient, simple and totally reliable billing system.

Other intelligent features of the car include pre-start climate control. While the A-Class E-CELL batteries are being charged at home or at a roadside charging point, the interior can be pre-heated or cooled to a temperature set by the driver. Another function enables the driver to monitor charging progress and therefore the present range available, via the internet or a smartphone, for example.

The A-Class E-CELL electronics also provide for proactive control of the charging operation. So if the electric car is parked for a long period, recharging can be set to take place at times when electricity is cheaper, for example during the night. The intelligent interface in the A-Class E-CELL provides a range of billing, control and monitoring functions, making electric mobility convenient and safe, and therefore very customer-friendly. The vehicle is automatically immobilised on connection of the charging cable to the socket, preventing any possibility of driving off by mistake while charging is in progress. This makes the recharging operation even safer and more convenient for the user.

“Everything under control” when out on the road

To make vehicle handling and control as easy, safe and transparent as possible for the driver, the A-Class E-CELL has its own control and display concept specifically designed for the requirements of an electric car. The multifunction display in the vehicle shows the battery charge status, trip data such as kilometres driven, travelling time, average speed and average fuel consumption, along with the remaining range and residual electrical energy capacity (SoC = state of charge).

Another detail specific to the system is a display of the currently available drive power. Meanwhile, the rev counter normally to be found on the instrument panel is replaced with an indicator showing the instantaneous drive power demand or recovery power. Green, white and red-coloured segments show whether the drive system is currently operating in charge, economy or boost mode.

High-quality equipment typical for Mercedes

The new A-Class E-CELL also has plenty to offer in terms of Mercedes-quality equipment. Standard highlights in the premium quality “AVANTGARDE” version of this innovative electric car include bi-xenon headlamps, COMAND APS, an active park assist for automatic parking and the THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control system. A special additional function is the ability to preset the interior climate during charging, i.e. raising or lowering the compartment temperature according to the weather conditions. The car also has a comprehensive range of safety features, including rear window bags and sidebags, and sophisticated seating and lighting packages.

External features of this battery-powered electric car include the standard polar silver painted body and an “E-CELL” sign in silver lettering on the boot.

Highest safety standards

Mercedes-Benz applies the same high safety standards in the A-Class E-CELL as in all its other series-produced vehicles. The electric drive system has demonstrated readiness for series production in extensive practical testing programs. Key components have also been proven in Mercedes-Benz fuel-cell vehicles, for example, allowing Mercedes engineers to draw on the experience gained from more than 4.5 million test kilometres in everyday use. The integrated safety concept reflects the specific characteristics of the vehicle’s innovative drive system. The lithium-ion batteries and high-voltage system of the A-Class E-CELL are protected with a comprehensive safety concept:

  • All cables are clearly colour-coded, and safety warnings are placed on high-voltage components.
  • Generously dimensioned insulators and special plugs provide full contact protection for the entire system.
  • An electronic controller continuously monitors safety requirements and immediately alerts the driver to any malfunctions in the high-voltage system.
  • All high-voltage components are connected in an electric loop. This means that the high-voltage system is automatically completely disconnected in the event of a malfunction or an accident.
  • The high-voltage system is also automatically completely disconnected when the ignition switch is placed in the “off” position, or in the event of possible faults.
  • The system is continuously monitored for short circuits.

An automatic drive disabler activated when the charging cable is connected prevents any possibility of the car being driven off by mistake.

Modular system for electric cars

In line with the strategy used for hybrid development, Mercedes engineers have also developed a modular system for electric vehicles with battery and fuel-cell. The benefits include the efficient use of shared parts in all the brand’s electric vehicles. All the key components of electric cars are appropriate for a modular approach – for example, the electric drive of the A-Class E-CELL is also used in the B-Class F-CELL. Both energy storage units in the electric A-Class are the same as the battery in the smart fortwo electric drive.

Mercedes-Benz USA Opens New Facility in Jacksonville

Multiple Operational Units Brought Together Under One Roof in New State-of-the-Art Facility Minutes from Airport

Mercedes-Benz USA today held a grand-opening ceremony for a new cutting-edge facility in Jacksonville, Florida. Strategically located less than three miles from the Jacksonville airport, the new Southern Region facility centralizes several business units into one complex for more efficient dealer support and correspondingly higher levels of customer satisfaction.

The recently constructed building totaling a combined 415,000 sq. ft., is a leased facility built to accommodate MBUSA’s needs. It is located off Interstate 95 at 13470 International Parkway. MBUSA took official occupancy in July with four business units operating from the site including: Sales Operations Southern Regional Office; Parts Distribution Center (PDC); Quality Evaluation Center (QEC); and Learning & Performance Center (LPC). Approximately 160 employees work at the new facility, which incorporates innovative environmental systems and design using the same criteria as LEED certified buildings within each of the four business areas.

“This new facility is an integral part of our commitment to more efficiently and effectively support our dealers so that they in turn can provide the unparalleled ownership experience that our buyers expect from Mercedes-Benz,” said Ernst Lieb, president and CEO of MBUSA, who presided over the ceremony. “This facility represents our best thinking in terms of how Mercedes-Benz looks and functions.”

The new complex incorporates the company’s unique Autohaus design which has been adopted by Mercedes-Benz dealerships across the country. The modern aesthetic concept skillfully incorporates signature design elements in a way that is designed to promote interaction and create an appealing functional environment…

The new Jacksonville facility houses the following business operations:

  • SALES OPERATIONS SOUTHERN REGION OFFICE — The Southern Region MBUSA office supports 102 MBUSA dealerships with sales and fixed operations across 12 states including Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Texas as well as Puerto Rico. Mercedes-Benz Classic Center Helps Rebuild Mercedes History

World's First Manufacturer-Backed Classic Center Offers Retail Sales And Full Compliment of Services for its Vintage Vehicles

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, the first and only manufacturer-backed classic center of its kind, offers a full compliment of services including retail sales, restoration, and genuine spare parts sales for Mercedes-Benz models aged twenty years and older. This marks another chapter in the pioneering history of Mercedes-Benz which includes the invention of the world’s first automobile 124 years ago.

“Imagine the chance to step back in time and purchase the Mercedes-Benz of your dreams right off the showroom floor, and that is the magic of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center,” said Mike Kunz, manager, Classic Center. “For those who longed for these cars when they were younger, or for customers who are new to the brand and value the nostalgia and timeless style that comes with a vintage Mercedes, the Classic Center at Irvine provides a unique opportunity unmatched by any other marque in the world to relive automotive history.”

Vehicles are offered at a wide range of prices beginning at approximately $25,000 and reaching upwards into the millions.

The Classic Center operates a full service department. Any technician employed at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center is qualified to work on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles classified by the company as “classic” – currently up to and including the 126 series (300-560 models) sold from 1981-1991.

Ownership of a classic Mercedes-Benz is by no means required to enjoy a visit to the Classic Center. The Center offers something for all enthusiasts from those who enjoy admiring expertly restored classic Mercedes-Benz cars to those shopping in the boutique for a full line of automotive and lifestyle accessories.

Unique Factory Support

Through its close partnership with the original Classic Center in Fellbach, Germany, the Classic Center in Irvine maintains a direct link to the factory and unequalled access to the parts, tools, service manuals and production records needed to work on these great automobiles, especially in the case of vehicles long out of production such as the spectacular 540K of the 1930s.

Owners who enjoy maintaining and repairing their classic Mercedes-Benz cars can find a wide selection of parts available through the Classic Center. What is not in stock can be ordered. The Classic Center has access to 42,000 different parts for every regular production Mercedes-Benz from 1945 through the 126 series models.

“Nobody understands how to care for these cars better than the company that made them and has the vast resources and expertise to do so,” notes Kunz.

“Should an original part not be available, the Classic Center can turn to the Mercedes-Benz Prototype Department and the Research and Development Department for assistance in remanufacturing parts. As one example, the Prototype Department was called upon to reproduce the hood for the 1956-1963 190 SL, because it required a specific technique that is no longer in place.”

Irvine in southern California is the ideal location for the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center as it is the heart of car culture in America and has always been one of the most popular and best markets for Mercedes-Benz worldwide.

The region is home to a sizeable population of classic Mercedes-Benz lines, including the iconic 300 SL “Gullwing” coupe and 300 SL roadster models built 1954-1963; the 190 SL roadster built 1955-1963; the “113” series SL roadsters (230/250/280 SL) built 1963-1971; the 220/250/280 series sedans, coupes and convertibles built 1959-1971, and such rare models as the legendary 300 SEL 6.3 and 600 of the 1960s and the 6.9 of the late-1970s.

The 1959-1971 111-series coupes and cabriolets, in particular, have been among the fastest appreciating classic Mercedes from that time. With their elegance, grace and timeless style, these Mercedes-Benz models perfectly fit the California lifestyle. A restored 1970-1971 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet, for example, can today exceed the $150,000 mark. Five years ago, this model was selling for roughly half that amount. The coupe versions, both six-cylinder and V8-powered, are more numerous and also highly desirable.

SoCal’s Favorite Cars: The Classic SLs

In 1963, Mercedes-Benz introduced the six-cylinder 113-series SL roadsters to replace both the limited-production 300 SL roadster and the four-cylinder 190 SL roadster. Starting with the 230 SL of 1963 and culminating with the 280 SL offered through 1971, these were known as the “pagoda” SLs because of the slightly concave shape of their detachable hardtops. Nearly 49,000 were built, and many are still driven with great pride and enjoyment in southern California.

One of southern California’s most popular high-end cars from the 1970s and 1980s remains a common site in the region: the V8-powered 107 series SL, starting with the 350/450 SL in 1972 and culminating with the 560 SL in 1989. More than 237,000 cars were built, with more than two thirds coming to the U.S. – and a large number of those selling in California.

Mercedes-Benz Active Safety Technology Debuts on 2011 CL-Class

The 2011 CL-Class debuts Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, designed to help the driver avoid danger

The restyled CL-Class boasts two new safety features based on state-of-the-art radar, camera and sensor technology. Renowned as the flagship coupe from Mercedes-Benz, the 2011 CL-Class debuts Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, both designed to help the driver avoid danger through corrective braking. Building on the innovative technologies introduced last year on the E- and S-Class, the CL-Class now showcases the height of safety technology form Mercedes-Benz including features such as ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE Brake with automatic emergency braking, and Night View Assist PLUS with Pedestrian Detection. The 2011MY CL-Class will make its U.S. debut in Fall 2010.

Active Lane Keeping Assist

Using a multi-purpose camera mounted in the windshield and a computer that analyzes the images, Active Lane Keeping Assist recognizes lane markings and alerts the driver by simulating rumble strip vibrations in the steering wheel (via an electric motor) if the car drifts from its lane unintentionally. Should the driver fail to react to this warning, the car intervenes by gently braking the wheels on the opposite side of the car. The unequal distribution of braking forces causes a yaw movement which helps the driver to stay in their lane. Active Lane Keeping Assist makes use of the existing ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) system to apply the brakes and maintain vehicle control.

Active Blind Spot Assist

The second innovation on the 2011 CL-Class, Active Blind Spot Assist, monitors both blind spots alongside the vehicle using close-range radar sensors. When a vehicle is detected, a yellow warning triangle is illuminated in the corresponding side-view mirror. Should the driver disregard this warning and activate the turn indicator, the warning triangle changes to red and an audible warning also sounds. If the driver continues to ignore these warnings and moves dangerously close to a neighboring vehicle, the system activates corrective braking intervention to the wheels of the opposite side of the vehicle. Like Active Lane Keeping Assist, the yaw movement helps correct the car’s path or minimize the consequences of a collision.

Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in USA Celebrate Rear-Engine 75th Anniversary

Mercedes-Benz Classic Center is displaying a rare collection of rear-engine vehicles and restoring a 1934 150 Sport Roadster

A business built on heritage, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California celebrates its fourth year in business by displaying a rare collection of rear-engine vehicles and successfully restoring its first museum car: a 1934 150 Sport Roadster, a rare mid-rear engine two seater that’s regarded as the only 150 known to exist. Two other rear-engine vehicles, the 130 and the 170 H, are also on display at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.

Drawing on the expertise of their highly specialized technicians and facility’s capabilities, the MB Classic Center provided a full mechanical restoration. With the preservation of the original parts and vehicle a priority, they re-built transmission, brakes, steering and suspension systems, engineered a new wiring harness to for safety and reliability and fabricated missing components in order to make the 150 Sport Roadster street capable after not running for approximately 60 years. One of the most technologically innovative vehicles of its day, the three headlight 150 roadster features a swept split front windscreen, two free-standing spare wheels mounted in front of the rear wings, and a highly distinctive pointed boat tail featuring two translucent illuminated licence plates. Purchased second-hand in the late 1940s with a mileage of 44,500 kilometres, the150 Sport Roadster has not been roadworthy since that time.

Visually different than the 150 Sport Roadster, the 130 and 170H rear-engine vehicles appear strangely familiar to most people who see them. Featuring a rounded body, expressive wheel arches and bug-eyes lights, the 130 and subsequent 170 H offered passengers an extremely efficient vehicle package. For vehicles with a relatively short wheelbase, the engine mounted in the rear afforded passengers more leg room and improved comfort by creating optimum springing between the axles. The 1934 130 was the first fully-developed mass-produced rear-engine car both in brand history and indeed in the entire history of the automobile. While Mercedes-Benz has the honor of bringing the rear-engine concept to a new level and making it more widely known, the run was short and the 1936 170 H was the last rear-engine mounted model that wore the star logo. In 1946, 10 years after Mercedes-Benz finished production, the “VW Beetle” went on sale and the profile became recognizable.

MERCEDES-Benz USA To Open New Multi Functional Facility in Florida

MBUSA will be opening its state-of-the-art facility to link core operations in one building in Jacksonville, FL in July

Mercedes-Benz USA announces the opening of its new state-of-the-art facility in Jacksonville, Florida. Strategically located minutes from the Jacksonville airport, the new facility centralizes several business units into one building for efficient customer and dealer support.

The newly constructed building totaling 415,000 sq. ft. is a leased facility located off of Interstate 95 at 13470 International Parkway. MBUSA plans to take official occupancy in July with four business units operating from the location including Sales Operations Southern Regional Office; Parts Distribution Center (PDC); Quality Evaluation Center (QEC); and Learning & Performance Center (LPC). Approximately 160 employees are in the new facility, which incorporates innovative environmental systems and design.

“The new state-of-the-art facility incorporates Mercedes-Benz Autohaus design that many dealers have adopted throughout the U.S. Now we have one common look and feel for our corporate operations in the region across all our key business units,” said Ernst Lieb, CEO of MBUSA. “By linking our core operations in one building, we can also create better efficiencies that will benefit our dealer network and our customers.”

SALES OPERATIONS SOUTHERN REGION OFFICE

The Southern Region MBUSA office supports 102 MBUSA dealerships with sales and fixed operations across 12 states including Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Texas as well as Puerto Rico.

MBUSA has three other regional offices in the U.S.: Parsippany, NJ, Rosemont, IL and Costa Mesa, CA.

PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTER

A new addition to MBUSA’s operation in Jacksonville, the Parts Distribution Center (PDC) supports approximately 70 MBUSA dealers in the Southeast with parts supply. The PDC will house about 15 percent of MBUSA overall parts inventory, shipping over 1.3 million lines annually.

MBUSA has four other Parts Distribution Centers in U.S.: Carol Stream, IL, Fontana, CA, Fort Worth, TX and Robbinsville, NJ.

QUALITY EVALUATION CENTER

With over 70 personnel from various engineering and logistics disciplines, representing a diverse collection of work experience and backgrounds, the Quality Evaluation Center in Jacksonville is one of only two operational units of its kind outside of Germany. The QEC team includes Daimler Quality personnel, which places engineers closer to the market and to the dealers served by MBUSA. This market proximity brings greater knowledge of market-specific issues directly into the Quality management process through increased speed of parts evaluation and feedback to Daimler development. Local parts analysis also helps to improve diagnostic tools and technical information while the resulting rapid feedback to dealers improves the diagnostic skills necessary for improved “Fixed First Visit” performance- a key customer satisfaction component.

LEARNING & PERFORMANCE CENTER

The Learning & Performance Center is a state of the art training facility for dealership and MBUSA personnel. MBUSA facilitates over 120 classes per year in the Jacksonville Learning & Performance Center, with a total of about a thousand participants from across the Southeastern United States. Classrooms, workshops, a computer lab, a virtual classroom webcast area, student lounge, offices and a cafeteria are designed in an intelligent and integrated fashion all for the learners’ benefit while at the same time providing increased operational effectiveness and efficiencies. MBUSA operates five Learning & Performance Centers in the U.S.: Houston, TX, Itasca, IL, Jacksonville, FL, Montvale, NJ, and Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

“We have planned and built this new facility with cutting edge systems and design for our associates to deliver the best products and services throughout the region,” said Alan McLaren, vice president of customer services. “It’s unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz facility that showcases our dedication to quality and innovation in a significant way.”

Mercedes-Benz Improves in Quality According to J.D. Power and Associates

Initial Quality of Model Launches Improves Considerably, Led by New Entries From Ford, Honda, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche

Domestic auto brands, as a whole, have demonstrated higher initial quality than import brands for the first time, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 U.S. Initial Quality Study(SM) (IQS) released today. The study has been conducted annually for the past 24 years.

Overall, the industry average for initial quality is 109 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2010, increasing slightly from 108 PP100 in 2009. However, initial quality for domestic brands as a whole has improved by 4 PP100 in 2010 to an average of 108 PP100—slightly better than the initial quality of import brands, which averages 109 PP100 in 2010.

Substantial improvements by many domestic models—including the Ford Focus, Ram 1500 LD and Buick Enclave—drive the overall improvement of domestic automakers in 2010. In particular, initial quality of Ford models has improved steadily for the past nine years. In addition, as a corporation, Ford Motor Company (including Volvo) has 12 models that rank within the top three in their respective segments in 2010—more than any other corporation. General Motors Company has 10 models that rank within the top three in their segments.

Initial quality performance demonstrated by U.S. brands in 2010 contrasts sharply with consumer sentiment from one year ago. According to data collected by the J.D. Power Web Intelligence Division between May and July 2009, much of the online consumer discussion about automotive quality centered around the difficulties U.S. automakers were facing, and perceptions that these problems were largely caused by poor product quality.

“Domestic automakers have made impressive strides in steadily improving vehicle quality, particularly since 2007,” said David Sargent, vice president of global vehicle research at J.D. Power and Associates. “This year may mark a key turning point for U.S. brands as they continue to fight the battle against lingering negative perceptions of their quality. However, there is still a long road ahead, and domestic manufacturers need to consistently prove to consumers that they can produce models with quality that equals or beats that of the import brands. Achieving quality comparability is the first half of the battle; convincing consumers—particularly import buyers—that they have done this is the second half.”

According to J.D. Power’s Web Intelligence Division, online consumer conversations about vehicle quality have recently shifted to a more concrete tone. In 2010, consumers are more often discussing quality as it applies to their own personal vehicle purchase decisions, rather than how domestic brands overall are affected by perceptions of low quality.

Initial quality of new models and major redesigns continues to improve in 2010, led by new launches from Ford, Honda, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

The all-new Honda Accord Crosstour and the redesigned Ford Mustang, Ford Taurus and Lexus GX 460 each rank highest in initial quality in their respective segments. The Ford Fusion, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Sedan and Porsche Panameraalso launch with notably high initial quality levels.

Historically, newly launched models have incurred substantially more quality problems than carryover models, on average. However, more than one-half of all models launched during the 2010 model year perform better than their respective segment averages. Furthermore, 12 all-new and redesigned models rank within the top three in their respective segments. Meanwhile, initial quality of carryover and freshened models has declined for the 2010 model year.

“With automakers committing huge budgets for the design, engineering, production and marketing of all-new models and major redesigns, hitting the quality mark out of the gate is critical,” said Sargent. “Getting initial quality right on model launches can serve dual purposes for automakers—boosting profitability and also inspiring consumer confidence in the overall quality of their models. Having a strong quality image is essential for automakers to be able to compete in today’s market—both in the U.S. and around the globe.”

The Initial Quality Study serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. The study is used extensively by manufacturers worldwide to help them design and build better vehicles and by consumers to help them in their vehicle purchase decisions. Initial quality has been shown over the years to be an excellent predictor of long-term vehicle durability, which directly impacts consumer purchase decisions. The study captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories—design-related problems and defects and malfunctions.

2010 IQS Ranking Highlights

Porsche leads the overall nameplate rankings, averaging 83 PP100. Following in the rankings are, respectively, Acura (which moves from 14th rank position in 2009 to second in 2010), Mercedes-Benz (which improves from sixth rank position in 2009 to third in 2010), Lexus and Ford (which moves into the top five for the first time since the inception of the study). MINI posts the largest improvement in 2010, reducing problems by 32 PP100 from 2009.

Toyota’s problem count increases by 16 PP100, moving it from sixth rank position in 2009 to 21st in 2010.

“Clearly, Toyota has endured a difficult year,” said Sargent. “Recent consumer concerns regarding Toyota’s quality are reflected in the nameplate’s performance in the 2010 study. That said, Toyota’s success was built on a well-deserved reputation for quality, and there is little doubt that they will do everything possible to regain that reputation.”

Ford and Lexus each garner three segment awards. Ford captures awards for the Focus, Mustang and Taurus, while Lexus receives awards for the GS, GX and LS models. The Lexus LS has the fewest quality problems in the industry, with just 55 PP100.

Chevrolet, Honda and Toyota receive two awards each. Chevrolet models earning awards are the Avalanche (in a tie) and theTahoe. Honda receives awards for the Accord and the Accord Crosstour, while Toyota receives awards for the FJ Cruiser andSienna.

Also receiving segment awards are: Acura RDX, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Sierra LD (in a tie), Hyundai Accent, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Nissan Frontier, Scion xB and Volvo C70.

Assembly Plant Awards

The Daimler assembly plant in East London, South Africa, receives the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects and malfunctions. The plant, which averages just 28 PP100, produces the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Plant awards are based solely on average levels of defects and malfunctions and exclude design-related problems.

Among North and South American plants, the Toyota Motor Corporation plant in Cambridge South, Ontario, Canada, which produces the Lexus RX, achieves the Gold Plant Quality Award.

In the Asia Pacific region, Toyota Motor Corporation’s Kyushu 2, Japan, plant, which produces the Lexus ES, IS and RX, receives the Gold Plant Quality Award.

The 2010 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 228-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate identification of problems and to drive product improvement. The study was fielded between February and May 2010. Visit the J.D. Power Business Center for additional information on J.D. Power’s automotive research.

2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class In-Depth Look

The redesigned 2011 R-Class will be available in U.S. showrooms in August 2010

The redesigned 2011 R-Class once again raises the bar for the luxury crossover vehicle segment. In addition to the fresh exterior, the R-Class continues to boast a number of unique interior virtues, including the flexible use of space found in the latest crossovers combined with luxurious, first-class comfort. While the exterior look has changed, the R-Class stays true to its mission – providing unparalleled interior space with Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive. The redesigned R-Class will be available in U.S. showrooms in August 2010.

Together with the significantly revised exterior, the complete range of standard equipment and the numerous individualization options, the R-Class can be tailored specifically to meet individual requirements. If there was such a thing as a vehicle versatility test, then the R-Class would certainly be the favorite to win first place.

An overview of the models:

U.S. Models:

  • R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC
  • R350 4MATIC

Other International Models:

  • R300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY
  • R300
  • R500 4MATIC
  • Simply stunning: the design of the 2011 R-Class

Impressive appearance with new highlights

Dramatically redesigned for the 2011MY, the R-Class is noticeably more assertive, underlining the unique character of this multi-talented vehicle. The designers paid special attention to the front section, with an emphasis on width and a horizontally structured hood to make the vehicle appear more harmonious, muscular and dynamic.

Expressive: the new front section emphasizes character

At the front of the R-Class, the hood, fenders, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper have been completely redesigned. The new hood has more defined contours, complemented by an arrow-shaped front edge. The wider, higher radiator grille is more steeply angled, while the rear fascia incorporates striking, clear-cut lines. The side recesses in the bumper — where the fog lamps and daytime driving lights (or optional LED daytime running lights) are located — are spaced well apart and emphasize width. The lines of the side skirts are harmoniously continued forward in the updated fenders and grille. The new, dynamic “face” of the R-Class is particularly impressive. The redesigned headlamps blend perfectly into the front end to further emphasize the horizontal lines. The “eyelids” follow the beltline contours along the sides, and are arranged above the chromed headlamp housings to produce an assertive, concentrated gaze.

Perfect proportions

Sleek design is reiterated in the side profile as well. With the coupé-like lines of the window area, the R-Class represents a unique departure from traditional crossovers. Eye-catching details of the clearly contoured sides include the larger exterior mirror housings, which are set well away from the doors and supported by slim stems. The strikingly designed mirror housings in the vehicle color have integrated indicator repeaters in the form of a stylized arrow.

Perfect finish: the rear section of the R-Class

The rear section seamlessly continues the design idiom of the front, with a new bumper design, modified tail lights, a diffuser and integrated tailpipe trim emphasizing the width with more horizontal structures. The bumper also echoes the sharp contours of the side skirts, giving the effect of a continuous line circling around the exterior. As a finishing touch, the tail lights feature LED and fiber optic technology as well as horizontally arranged lighting functions.

The 2011 model year R-Class looks particularly attractive in the new “diamond white” metallic paint finish.

Please take a seat: interior appointments

Sitting comfortably in spacious luxury

If there were a versatility test for automobile interiors, the R-Class would undoubtedly be a candidate for first place. The R-Class offers a variety of seating options: designed for maximum comfort, the crossover offers six seats as standard or an optional seventh seat in the U.S. (European models offer five seats as standard in both the normal and long-wheelbase versions plus an available four seat configuration). The second row can also be equipped with a storage console between the two standard captain’s chairs.

Seating arrangement: from four passengers right up to seven passengers

The space provided behind the front seats is so generous that up to three child safety seats can be installed at the same time. If only four seats are required, the 3rd row seats can be easily folded down for more storage.

R-Class customers who prefer more seating capacity may opt for a seventh seat located in the second row. With three passengers seated in the middle row, this gives a total seating capacity of seven. Groups of up to six people choose the popular 2-2-2 seating configuration, which provides each occupant with an individual seat. The R-Class comes with 8-way power adjustable front seats with driver-side 4-way pneumatic lumbar control for driver and front passenger as standard, while as a special order option front passengers can also enjoy the luxury of actively ventilated and heated seats.

The R-Class also features another benefit in the form of its large, versatile 85 cu. ft. luggage compartment. The optional electronic tailgate — which can be operated remotely by means of a switch or smart key — also makes access to the cargo area easier. This makes the R-Class the most variable and spacious vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car product range.

Refined atmosphere for maximum driving pleasure

The high-class interior – which seems even more spacious when fitted with the optional Panorama glass sunroof – makes use of new materials and color combinations to enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this luxury crossover. Upholstery offerings include black, almond beige or ash in both MB-Tex or optional leather. The seats feature a new transverse and linear piping design. The interior also features standard burl walnut trim.

The cockpit impresses with its newly designed instrument cluster. The dials and needles have a white background, and are even easier to read thanks to a threedimensional effect.

That’s entertainment – telematics and multimedia in the R-Class

The telematics of the R-Class impress with intuitive and user-friendly operation, high-performance and great versatility. The 2011 R-Class features the COMAND system as standard equipment with an in-dash 6-disc CD/DVD changer and highresolution 6.5-inch color display. The COMAND system also includes a compass function, which is shown in both the instrument cluster and the central display plus a Bluetooth interface and an Aux-in connection for mobile audio devices are also integrated. As part of the optional Premium1 package, the COMAND system also includes a 4 GB memory for MP3 files (Music Register), an SD memory card slot and a hard disk drive navigation system that holds various map displays. SIRIUS real-time traffic rapidly helps guide the driver to the desired destination. Also included in the Premium1 package is a voice-operated control system for accessing many vehicle functions, and a universal media interface to connect an external music memory or iPod to the onboard electronics and the control system. Music tracks are displayed both in the instrument cluster and the color display in the center console, and can be conveniently accessed using the keys in the multifunction steering wheel or on the dashboard. This system also enables charging of the audio device at the same time.

Passengers can also enjoy full, concert-hall surround-sound with the optional, latest-generation harman/kardon® Logic7® sound system. This high-output sound system includes a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and Dolby Digital 5.1. Also available is an optional rear seat entertainment system with two large 8-inch screens, a DVD player and two wireless headsets for greater freedom of movement, plus a remote control.

Comprehensive safety concept – Eight airbags, crash-responsive head restraints and an electronic guardian angel

All R-Class models have numerous standard features which help make long journeys as well as short trips around town even safer and more relaxed. These features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO front head restraints, and a tire pressure loss warning system. New for 2011, the optional Blind Spot Assist makes lane changes significantly safer by monitoring the sides of the vehicle and alerting the driver with visual and audible warnings whenever they signal a lane change with another vehicle alongside. Safety is also enhanced by the sophisticated telematics system “mbrace”, the COMAND system with an extremely user-friendly interface, as well as the raised seating position. This gives the driver a good view of the traffic conditions, enabling him or her to recognize potential dangers more quickly and easily.

Everything considered: integral Mercedes-Benz safety concept

Naturally, the comprehensive Mercedes approach to integral safety applies to the 2011 R-Class. This trailblazing safety philosophy goes well beyond compliance with standardized crash test regulations and concerns itself with all aspects of driving – everything that is important for the safety of the vehicle occupants and other motorists. The Mercedes safety concept divides these aspects into four phases:

  • Safe driving: avoiding danger, warning and assisting in good time
  • In the event of danger: acting in an anticipatory manner, e.g. with PRE-SAFE®
  • In an accident: provide protection as needed
  • After an accident: avoid even worse consequences and make rapid assistance possible
  • Comprehensive restraint system for the best possible occupant protection

Combined with the front and rear deformation zones, the high-strength occupant cell forms an effective basis for occupant protection systems that include:

  • adaptive, twostage airbags for the driver and front passenger
  • sidebags in the front, and in the middle row of seats
  • curtain airbags across all three rows of seats
  • NECKPRO crashresponsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger
  • 3point seat belts on all seats
  • belt tensioners and beltforce limiters for driver and front seat passenger
  • seat belt tensioners and singlestage beltforce limiters in the middle and rear seat rows
  • LATCH child seat anchorages for up to three child restraint systems in the second seat row
  • belt height adjustment for the driver and front passenger
  • belt status display for rearseat passengers in the instrument cluster
  • automatic child seat recognition with deactivation of the front passenger airbag if a special MercedesBenz child seat is fitted

The electronic guardian angel: PRE-SAFE® has a preventive effect

Occupant protection in the 2011 R-Class begins well before an accident. The Mercedes-Benz invention PRE-SAFE® is able to activate preventive measures reflexively when it recognizes an impending accident, so that the belts and airbags can provide optimal protection during the collision. This multiple awardwinning technology is standard equipment.

PRE-SAFE® uses a combination of active and passive safety: it is networked with Brake Assist (BAS) and the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, whose sensors can recognize potentially critical handling situations and relay information to the electronic control units within milliseconds. This data is also used for preventive occupant protection by PRE-SAFE®. Important to note is that the PRE-SAFE® protective measures are reversible: if the accident is avoided, the preventive belt tensioning is relaxed automatically, and the passengers can return the seats and sliding sunroof to their original positions. The preventive occupant protection is then immediately ready for use again.

Tradition: 40 years of accident research at Mercedes-Benz

Comprehensive safety has a long tradition at Daimler: in 1969 Mercedes-Benz started its ongoing accident research program, in which engineers evaluate collisions involving the company’s vehicles in the Stuttgart region soon after they occur – and in special cases even worldwide. Time and again, the findings of these accident researchers provide important information on components that can be specifically improved in terms of passive safety. The investigators have examined around 4,000 accidents since their work started 40 years ago. Each crash is documented with an 80-page accident report. This continuously growing database will enable vehicles to be made even safer in the future.

Drive system and chassis

In addition to the economical gasoline variant with customary effortless power delivery and high drive comfort, the optimized diesel engine further enhances the appeal of the R-Class.

R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC: as clean as a gasoline model

With the R350 BlueTEC 4MATIC, Mercedes-Benz continues to offer one of the cleanest diesel models in the world. The V6 engine achieves an output of 210 hp and substantial torque of 400 lb-ft. This model also manages to achieve reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions while providing enhanced performance. Equipped with highly-effective AdBlue© exhaust gas after-treatment, the compression-ignition engine consumes an average 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, generating in the process the same level of emissions as a comparable gasoline engine. As a result, this model currently already meets the emission values planned for 2014 according to the EU6 standard. BlueTEC is a technology developed by Mercedes-Benz for the effective reduction of emissions by diesel vehicles, especially nitrogen oxides. In this process, AdBlue®, a non-toxic, aqueous urea solution is injected into the stream of exhaust gases. This releases ammonia, which breaks down up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

Effortless power delivery with high drive comfort: The gasoline engine in the R-Class

The V6 gasoline engine gives the R350 4MATIC a high level of drive comfort together with effortless power delivery and a moderate fuel consumption. The 3.5- liter V6 gasoline engine of the all-wheel drive R350 4MATIC develops 268 hp and a maximum torque of 258 lb-ft, producing fuel economy figures of 14 mpg city and 19 mpg highway.

Stability pact: the well-proven suspension of the R-Class

The R-Class has a dynamically active and comfortable suspension as standard equipment. Both model variants have steel springs in front with self-leveling rear air suspension as standard equipment. Also available as a special order option, the AIRMATIC system with air suspension, the Adaptive Damping System and level adjustment improves both ride comfort and handling dynamics.

Mercedes AMG Driving Academy Features PS3 Game Gran Turismo 5

The Mercedes-Benz AMG Driving Academy in June is featuring the Gran Turismo 5 game exclusively for the PlayStation system

The Mercedes AMG Driving Academy kicking off in June is featuring the highly anticipated Gran Turismo® 5 game exclusively for the PlayStation® 3 (PS3™) system, enhancing the trackside experience for race enthusiasts driving several real 2011 SLS AMG supercars that are part of this year’s vehicle line-up during AMG Driving Academy sessions.

AMG and Sony Computer Entertainment America, LLC teamed up to feature a Gran Turismo 5 SLS AMG gaming experience, created by Polyphony Digital, Inc., on racing sleds that incorporates the Nurburgring Nordschleife. In January 2010, the SLS AMG from Mercedes-Benz was given the honor of being the featured vehicle on the Gran Turismo 5 packaging cover. The game is expected to be available in stores this year. The Gran Turismo 5 racing sled experience is on hand throughout the AMG Academy schedule held at Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca.

“The opportunity to compare the realistic Gran Turismo 5 Mercedes demo on the racing sled and then the actual SLS AMG on the track is one that most people will not experience in their lifetime,” said Greg Clark, product manager, exclusive vehicles for Mercedes-Benz USA. “The demo gives participants a chance to get a realistic feel for the car before they step into the SLS AMG.”

The AMG Driving Academy is specifically for driving enthusiasts, who want to personally experience the excitement of motorsports and the track capabilities of Mercedes-AMG vehicles including the all new 563 hp SLS AMG capable of 0-60 in 3.7 seconds.

In addition to the SLS AMG, program participants have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of several AMG models including the E63 AMG, SL63 AMG, C63 AMG, and SLK55 AMG. The program features custom-designed exercises to teach dynamic driving capabilities across two of the top tracks in the U.S:
