What to Wear: Helly Hansen Kids

Nothing will keep your kids warmer or dryer than the winter gear from Helly Hansen

With this Thanksgiving feeling less like Turkey Day and more like Christmas, it’s time to stock up on kid’s gear.  And as with adults, the best way to keep your kids warm is through the magic of layering.  Helly Hansen, the Norwegian brand known in part for their performance winter gear, makes it easy.  They’ve not only designed a perfectly paired coat and snow pant system for the outside, they have a perfect base layering system for underneath, ensuring countless hours of outside fun no matter how much snow and cold may come.

Here’s a look at what I have for my kids, and the perfect place to start for anyone looking to outfit their kids in the best this winter season.

Helly Hansen Kids Winter '14

Helly Hansen Rider INS Jacket

For the last three years, my kids have been kept warm in the Helly Hansen Rider INS Jacket. It’s the perfect jacket for kids starting in late fall as it’s exceptionally breathable, and come winter time, the jacket simply excels at keeping your precious little ones’ warm in even the worst winters.  Making the magic happen, a combination of Primaloft Black Insulation and HELLY TECH PERFORMANCE fabric creating a non-puffy, low profile coat that offers incredible warmth and comfort.  The HELLY TECH PERFORMANCE fabric is designed with a layered construction to keep water from getting in while at the same time remaining breathable enough to let moisture out. Gone are the days where snow clothes become wet and heavy from playing in the snow, the Helly Rider INS Jacket stays dry no matter what.

Even better, the design of the jacket allows for full freedom of movement allowing for endless unobstructed play.  The jacket’s adjustable wrist cuffs make it easy to tighten the sleeves in order to better fit with mittens and give added protection from snow. For days that aren’t as cold or if your son loves to play tag and gets his hood grabbed, you can easily detach the hood with the snaps and reattach when needed. Also worth noting is that the hood is big enough to pull over a winter hat (check out the K Outline Beenie), but it’s not overly big to the point it hinders vision.  It’s another great level of protection when the snow and wind picks up.

Helly Hansen Rider INS Bib

Perfectly complimenting the Helly Hansen Rider INS Jacket is the Rider INS Bib, which simply put are the best protection from winter when it’s playtime in the snow. They’re waterproof, so even when playing in snow on a slightly warmer, slushier day, the Rider INS Bib will never get soaked. Like the jacket, providing warmth for your little one is the PrimaLoft Black Insulation, a synthetic product that acts similar to down but is exceptionally light, pliable and soft. In the event any moisture does get in, the PrimaLoft will not absorb water, adding another level of dryness protection.

The Riders INS Bib are designed with hard and heavy use in mind, with reinforced seat, knee and hems so your kids can go anywhere and do anything without fear of rips or tears. And because these pants can go anywhere, they’ve been designed to keep the snow out in any situation, with boot gaiters, high chest coverage, adjustable suspenders and elastic footbands just some of the ways your kids stay protected.  Like the jacket, I’ve had my kids in the Rider INS Bibs for the past several years, and absolutely love them – they’re easily the best snowpants I’ve found for my children.

HH Warm Set 2

Underneath it all, what could be my favorite product from Helly Hansen and one that I buy my kids every year as a gift is the HH Warm base layer package. My kids wear them in the winter when going outside to play, and even wear them around the house as pajamas and weekend lounge wear. Technologically speaking, they use a combination of ultra soft merino wool and Helly Hansen’s extremely intelligent LIFA technology.  And the reason it’s intelligent is this – when worn alone, or when my kids activity level as low, the base layers act simply as insulation to warm the body.  But when my kids start playing outside and begin sweating, the base layers actually help to dry and warm the body, wicking away any moisture from their skin and transferring it to their outer layer.  If you’ve ever found yourself on a ski hill, you know the coldest time is on the ski lift, and the reason is because on the way down, you’ve worked up a sweat, which warms you,  but on the way up, the cold air then cools this sweat, and significantly lowers your temperature.  With the HH Warm Set 2, this doesn’t happen, as the perspiration is wicked away, and there’s no moisture left to cool you down.

Technology aside, my kids absolutely love their HH Warm sets, and in colder months is really their preferred clothing choice day and night. Helly Hansen offers both kids and juinors HH Warm sets with patterns fitting for the age group, making it the perfect stocking stuffer for both little kids playing in the snow to teenagers hitting the bigger slopes.

Thule Chariot Chinook 1 Will Take You Anywhere

The Thule Chariot Chinook can take you and your children anywhere you want to go

If you could design the perfect stroller, what would it look like?  If you’re anything like me, you’d want a stroller that you could take anywhere, whether city streets or off the beaten path. You’d also want a stroller that would allow you to take your child along with you on your favorite activities, whether it’s a walk, a jog, a bike ride… even a x-country ski trip in the winter.  But beyond its functionality, you’d want a stroller that provided exceptional comfort for your little one while offering the highest level of safety wherever your adventures take you.

It sounds like a lot to ask from one stroller, but for the adventurers among us, it already exists, and it happens to come from the stroller brand that I’ve used for almost 5 years:  Thule Chariot.  Their strollers are less of what you’d consider a traditional stroller and more of a multifunctional child carrier, designed to let you go almost anywhere and do almost anything with your little one in tow.

When I first bought a Chariot, I went with a Chariot Cougar 1 (which I loved), and as soon as I was pregnant with my second child I upgraded to a Chariot CX 2.  Now with a third child arriving I again turned to Chariot to ensure I stayed as active as possible with my little one, and after much deliberation, I chose the new Thule Chariot Chinook 1.  It’s a carrier perfect for a huge variety of outdoor activities that looks great, is safe, and is incredibly functional.

Thule Chariot Chinook 1

Thule Chariot Chinook 1

My husband and I are both triathletes and regularly participate in bike races, and I can wholeheartedly say the only reason this is possible is because we take our kids along with us for training. Since my two older kids are still in the CX 2, the Chinook 1 was the perfect addition for the new baby, as it allows me to continue my complete fitness routine with my new baby and my husband to bring the other two kids well.  Best of all, because the Chinook 1 easily converts from a jogging carrier to a conventional carrier, it doubles as the perfect city stroller when my two kids are walking.

When looking at the Thule Chariot Chinook range, the first thing you’ll notice is that it comes in either a single (holds up to 75 lbs) or double (up to 100 lbs) configuration. If this is your first child and you plan on having more in the future, I would recommend going with the double from the start, as Thule Chariot carriers are built to last through all of your children. If you’re confident that seating for one is all you’ll need (as I was), the Chinook 1 is perfect.  Whichever size you choose, it’s important to note the features and benefits remain the same.

At its heart, the Chinook is designed around an anodized aluminum roll cage which creates a safe environment for you kids while keeping the weight down.  In the rear, two large and easily removable wheels can traverse nearly anything, while a single pivoting wheel in the front rotates 360 degrees and makes tight turns a snap. The pivoting wheel can also be easily be locked out for running or folded up (or removed) for biking with the optional bike attachment kit. I tend to leave mine attached when I bike as I often find myself parking my bike and heading to a farmers market or park.  If street and bike use isn’t enough, there’s even an additional winter kit you can purchase which lets you replace the rear wheels with a pair of skis and a tow bar up front, perfect for cross country skiing or a winter hike/snowshoeing trip.

Thule Chariot Chinook 1 seat

Thule Chariot Chinook 1

Comfort was an obvious focus when designing the Chinook carrier as it offers reclining seats with removable extra seat padding and adjustable suspension, which if you’re heading out during nap time is an ideal way to keep your little one happy and asleep.  For infants, it includes a perfect support system, as the Chinook offers tremendous cushioning and head support, and there’s a five point harness system to keep your child securely in place.  There are also several window options built in that you can choose from depending on temperature, sun, etc. There are full window vents on the side that can be opened to cool the interior; there’s a front window that can be rolled up partially or fully; and there’s a second mesh shade that keeps your kids protected from bugs while still offering the fun of open air. When you’re not using the sunshade or screen, they simply roll up and have straps to keep them in place. In the winter months with colder temperatures I use a hot water bottle along with the Thule Bunting Bag and the enclosed design keeps my kids toasty warm even in the coldest weather.

In addition to the excellent head support infants, one thing I love about the Chinook is that it comes with everything you need for your babies first year of strolling including an infant car seat adapter and cargo bag that hooks on to the back of the carrier for additional storage. My only additional recommendation would be the bunting bag in the event you are planning to use the stroller in winter. It straps perfectly into the Chinook and can be used for children up to 2 years old.

Now that you know it can go virtually anywhere while keeping your little one comfortable and safe, what else can the Chinook offer?  The answer is ease of use. With all of the features it comes with, you might think that the Chinook is hard to set up and overly bulky, but in fact, it’s incredibly simple to use and folds quite well.  When your Chinook first arrives it will take you around 10 minutes to unpack and set up, as the large rear wheels and and handle bar click on easily and tool free. The reason this is so important is that not everyone has a large enough vehicle to accommodate the Chinook in one piece, so for those of you with limited trunk space, the Chinook is still a great option, as it can be folded to a manageable size in less than a minute. Another awesome feature is the ability to fold the Chinook with one hand, because as I’ve found, it’s always nice to be able to keep a hand on your other children when you’re in a busy environment.

In the end, I cannot recommend Thule Chariot carriers enough. With my Chinook, I’ve been able to continue doing all the activities I did prior to children, with the added benefit of being able to share it with them.  For anyone that wants to get or stay active with kids, you simply can’t beat a Thule Chariot for their fantastic performance, comfort and safety, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to active moms and dads everywhere.

New Mom Essentials: Products Every Mom Must Have

As a mom of three, here are some of things I can't live without

As a mom of three, I am always looking for products make my life easier, and the way I do it is by finding products that help me stay organized and that make my kids more comfortable and safe. It wasn’t easy, as it’s taken me three kids to learn what works and what doesn’t, so whether you’re a mom now or a mom-to-be, here are some of the things that I’ve personally fallen in love with.

Lily Jade Madeline Bag

Lily Jade Madeline Bag

Lily Jade Madeline Bag with Baby Bag Insert

This is without question the best diaper bag / kid bag / handbag you will ever find. I currently have an 8 week old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old, so my bag is filled with everything from diapers to snacks to iPads. With the Baby Bag Insert, there are pockets for everything you need in order to stay organized – no more digging through a large bag only to find what you were looking for in a bottom corner. In addition to the function of the Lily Jade Madeline Bag, style wise, you’re getting a truly designer bag as well (as is the case with all Lily Jade diaper bags). It’s made from premium leather with no blemishes, and the stitching is nothing less than perfect. And if you’re tempted to think the quality of materials and stitching won’t matter to you in a diaper bag, they do.  No bag will see more use than a diaper bag – you take it with you everywhere day in and day out – so you want one that’s going to last.  The fact the Madeline bag doubles as a designer diaper bag / handbag is the icing on the cake.

Once you’ve outgrown the diaper bag use, the Lily Jade bag is also designed to become the perfect handbag. Simply remove the baby bag insert and you have a leather handbag with leather that has gotten even better looking with age and is perfectly sized to carry everything you need. If and when another baby comes along, snap in the insert and its ready for diapers yet again. I can’t recommend the Lily Jade Madeline designer diaper bag highly enough. See more at Lily Jade.

Chewbeads

Chewbeads

Chewbeads

Just because I’m a mom doesn’t mean that I’m willing to give up my style. Like the Lily Jade bag, Chewbeads give us moms a functional yet stylish way to accessorize. As every mom know or will soon find out, when you’re holding your little one, no matter what you’ve given them to hold or chew on, the only thing they want is what’s around your neck. So, the geniuses at Chewbeads designed a breakaway necklace made of 100% silicone that’s free of BPA, lead and other harmful chemicals commonly found in plastics, making it perfectly safe for your child to chew on, suck on or just play with. It’s not just the safety and functionality of Chewbeads that have put them on the list, however, as they’re stylish and come in nearly every color, making them the perfect way to add a splash of color to any wardrobe.  Chewbeads also offers bracelets, baby items and Juniorbeads (my daughter’s favorite), letting little girls match their moms style. Aden + Anais

Aden + Anais

Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddles

Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddles are the softest, lightest and most luxurious blanket or swaddle I’ve ever come across. I received the Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddles as a gift for my third baby and I only wished that someone had introduced me to them sooner. They’re beautifully designed with natural prints and are as lightweight and delicate as a blanket can be. Sized perfectly to swaddle your baby at night, I also use my bamboo swaddles during the day to keep the sun off my little one as it’s lightweight and breathable to keep her from over heating. Because of the generous size, I also use the swaddles as a cover-up while nursing – they’re perfect for at the airport, on the plane or anywhere else where privacy is required. Since receiving the Bamboo Swaddles, I’ve ordered the bamboo Daydream Blanket as a throw for the couch (my children have already claimed it as their own, however), so I’ll be ordering another one shortly. 4Moms MamaRoo

4Moms MamaRoo

4moms mamaRoo

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve praised the mamaRoo to my fellow moms. Not all phone calls I receive are scheduled, so having the ability to set my baby down and have her be happy is a must. The 4moms mamaRoo cradles your baby as if she’s in your own arms and then gently rocks her in a motion that mimics your own. The mamaRoo reclining seat is adjustable from laying to sitting and has five different motions with adjustable speeds, with my daughter loving the kangaroo and the rock a bye settings. There’s also built in nature sounds and a hookup for your iPhone or other device, letting you set your own soothing soundtrack. It’s like a baby swing, but it’s been re-imagined for the 21st century to be more comfortable, more functional, and even easier to use. See more at 4Moms.

Medela Pump In Style Advance and Calma Bottle

Medela Pump In Style Advance and Calma Bottle

Medela Pump In Style Advanced and Medela Calma Bottles

If you’re breastfeeding, simply put, this is the best breastpump you will ever use. I nursed my first two babies for a full year, and in those two years I tried four different pumps.  Of the four pumps I tried I gave up on each of them after a week or two, as they ranged from uncomfortable to just not working at all.  Then, on the recommendation of my nurse, I tried the Medela Pump In Style Advanced, and it was simply the most comfortable and effective breast pump I’ve used. Now, while I’m still regularly nursing my little one, I’m able to take time off thanks to my milk reserve. I’ve even had a girls day away already, which has done wonders for my sanity. As for how my baby did the first time on the bottle after having nothing but the breast? It took her about 30 seconds with the Calma bottle and then she ate as if she’d been bottle feed from day one. The true test however was when she nursed following the bottle.  Some babies have trouble switching back and forth, but my daughter  could do so without any trouble, even after her first time.  For breastfeeding mothers, the Medela Pump In Style Advanced and Medela Calma Bottles are a must. See more at Medela.

Boba Wrap and Boba CarrierBoba Wrap and Boba Carrier

Boba Wrap and Boba Carrier

Boba Wrap and Boba Carrier 4G

Finding a carrier for your newborn is difficult, but I personally love the Boba Wrap. From the first week my daughter was born, she snuggled into the Boba Wrap and was completely happy.  It’s a super soft, comfortable wrap that keeps your little one in a natural, supportive position, and my daughter loved it.  And for me, I was able to get so much more done because I never felt guilty that I was leaving her by herself more than I should. I gardened, did dishes, played legos and worked while wearing my little girl in the Boba Wrap. For my older daughter, even though she rarely needs it anymore, I pack the Boba 4G on longer walks and in the car when shopping, so in the event she gets tired, me or my husband has an easy way to carry her. I can easily carry her on my back and push the stroller comfortably while still getting everything done that I need to, all while having two happy kids. See more at Boba.

Nest Bedding

Nest Bedding

Nest Bedding

While I’ll be discussing Nest Bedding in further detail in an upcoming article, I had to include their mattresses on my list. As an adult, we spend nearly 3,000 hours a year on our mattress and children even more, so it only makes sense that I would buy a non-toxic mattress and bedding for the most important people in my life as well. When shopping at Nest Bedding, I know that the products I’m looking at meet my criteria of being either completely organic or natural and non-toxic, as they’ve already done the legwork of searching out the best safe brands and bringing them conveniently to one place. Add in the support they give to local foster care providers and disadvantaged children, and purchasing from Nest Bedding is an easy choice when you’re outfitting your kid’s new bedroom. Created by board-certified pediatricians and moms, I love all of the products MD Moms offers.  I keep my Lily Jade bag packed with sunscreen wipes and all over clean wipes.  In the bath, I use the baby silk all over clean on all three of my children (including my daughter who suffers from severe eczema and my newborn).  It’s soap-free, sulfate-free and truly tear-free.  Also on my newborn I use the gentle scrub that gets rid of cradle cap in one use without the need to scrub.  In addition to products that don’t contain any parabens, sulfates, phthalates, lanolin, mineral oil, petroleum, waxes, wheat or gluten, it’s also made in the USA.  See more at MD Moms.

Smartstuff Furniture – Paula Deen Kids Guys Collection

Timeless furniture that is safe, functional and made to last a lifetime

My family and I live in a wonderful three bedroom home, and up until 2 months ago, my two children each had their own room. But with the recent addition of a new baby girl, we found ourselves in a spacing predicament. Due to late night feedings and fussiness, our baby girl needed her own room, which meant our older two kids would need to move in together. Because of the size of the room, we knew right away that we wanted and needed a bunk bed for them, as taking away my son’s bedroom play area wasn’t an option. And because we’re moving not only a second child but also an assortment of her possessions in as well, it was important to find additional furniture pieces that were functional, could double as storage, and would grow with them as their tastes changed.

As a family, we spent hours wandering furniture stores, testing out bed after bed. My biggest concern with a bunk bed was the safety – my oldest is five and rolls around non-stop in his sleep. Several of the bunk beds we looked at had large gaps on the side that would allow for his little legs to hang through. The second downfall with bunk beds that we looked at were the vertical ladders – all of which we felt were too steep for our young kids.

Beyond the safety, quality of furniture was another problem we found.  If you’ve ever thought “they don’t build stuff like they used to”, it’s a sentiment that’s very true in the furniture world. For me, it was incredibly important to find furniture that’s going to grow with my children, furniture that’s going to last them until they’re ready to move out of the house, and furniture that I can hold on to for when my grandkids come to stay. In other words, I wanted furniture that isn’t disposable (unlike so many other things we buy today).

But my requirements didn’t stop there… design and function were also key considerations while I was shopping. When two kids are sharing a room, space is limited, which means large pieces of furniture need to multi-task: appealing to both my and my children’s taste and yet serving a functional purpose.

Smartstuff Paula Deen - Guys Bunk Bed (twin over twin with trundle)

Smartstuff Paula Deen – Guys Bunk Bed (twin over twin with trundle)

I know it seems like I expect a lot from furniture, but I’m a firm believer in buying something great once, not something mediocre multiple times. In the end, after all of my research and a huge amount of furniture browsing, I found one furniture brand that fit the bill:  Smartstuff by Universal Furniture.  Interestingly enough, it’s the the same company that made several pieces of furniture I already owned, as Universal Furniture is known for their quality furniture for everything from bedroom sets to dining tables.  Up until a few months ago, however, I had no idea that they also had a children’s line. Smartstuff by Universal Furniture offers furniture for kids with the same craftsmanship you’ll find from the Universal line, but as the name implies, the pieces are filled with genius design additions that your kids will love.

I personally chose pieces from the Smartstuff by Universal Furniture Paula Deen Kids Guys Collection, but I should note that what I have to say about the quality and function is seen across all of the Smartstuff collections.  Which pieces you pick really comes down to styling preference when choosing the right collection for your home. With the Paula Deen Kids Guys Collection, I loved the distressed molasses wood used in the pieces and the classic design and lines.  As for the pieces I chose, I picked the twin-over-twin bunk bed with trundle bed underneath, the books and stuff bookcase and Henry’s desk with matching hutch and chair.  Three months later, and I couldn’t be more happy with my selections.

First, let’s look at safety, because no matter how great your kid’s furniture looks or how well it’s made, if your children aren’t safe when they’re using it, it will never fit the bill. With Smartstuff by Universal Furniture, you’re getting the safest children’s furniture on the market, as it meets all the safety requirements required by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  They then take safety a step further with what they call smart safety. Smart safety includes safety features you may not think of including lead-free finishes, softened edges and corners, cord management, built-in drawer stops, elimination of entrapment hazards, anti-tip hardware and metal dowels. Ensuring your kid’s safety, all products are rigorously tested and approved before ever going to market, and after three months of use, my kids have yet to suffer any injuries in any way from their new furniture (despite their incredibly high activity levels).

Smartstuff Paula Deen - Guys Henry's Desk with Hutch and Leather Desk Chair

Smartstuff Paula Deen – Guys Henry’s Desk with Hutch and Leather Desk Chair

The second reason I chose Smartstuff by Universal Furniture was because of the quality construction – it’s designed specifically for your children but made with the same high standards found in the adult furniture. The drawers are finished with English dovetails with screwed-in back panels – you won’t find anything held together by glue on your Smartstuff furniture. Heavy duty drawer guides ensure an easy open and close but, as my kids have tested, can withstand the occasional climber as well.  My kids have jumped, climbed, kicked and sat on the furniture in places that aren’t meant to be and the furniture has not seen a dent.  And believe me when I say that if Smartstuff furniture can survive my kids, it can survive not only other kids, but likely a natural disaster as well.

I’ve talked about safety and quality (which hands down set smartstuff furniture apart from other furniture I looked at), but what takes Smartstuff furniture a step further are the smart functions. This is where the furniture gets fun and it shows the ingenuity of Smartstuff designers. Specifically on the Paula Deen Kids Guys Collection, there are little things that make life easier for the kids. For example, on the top bunk, there’s a matching wooden tray (removable if you wish), on which your kids can store their favorite toys at night (my son loves using the tray for his Lego creations). On any given night you can find a lego racecar, a technic robot or even a group of lego guys on our top bunk, but it’s perfect because it keeps them out of the bed at night and safe from him rolling over and crushing them.

Smartstuff Paula Deen - Guys

Smartstuff Paula Deen – Guys

Down below in the trundle bed, there’s not only extra sleeping space for when friends are over, but there are storage trays as well, which we’ve put to good use for extra bedding, toys and shoe boxes.  It keeps everything organized, adds a ton of extra storage space in the room, and the drawers slide out easily, quickly revealing what’s below without the need to dig through a large collection of things.

But the smart design doesn’t stop there – Henry’s Desk and Hutch from the Guy’s Collection are both filled with smart functions as well. One of my favorite features is the built-in night light that has three light levels and is turned on and controlled by touch. It’s the perfect nightlight without any cords or switches to clutter the space, built directly into the hutch, and it looks great at night as well. The desk also features a full-length pull-out tray where my kids keep their laptop and iPad when they’re not them. To keep their electronics charged, there’s a charging station at the back of the desk which allows you to back the desk up directly to a wall without having to crawl underneath or reach behind in order to plug and unplug electronics. The hutch seamlessly secures to the desk and features a cork board, which every kid’s room needs. We use it for hanging photos and displaying artwork, and above the cork board we use the ample amount of space to neatly store favorite books, stuffed animals, and of course, my son’s collection of Star Wars Lego Ships.

And while we’re on the topic of storage, I highly recommend the bookcase from the Paula Deen Guy’s Collection as well.  It’s not overly large, so even if you don’t have a ton of space it can still fit in your room, but if your kids love books as mine do, it’s perfect for keeping their books organized.  And as I found, the bookcase can serve not only as a freestanding piece of furniture anywhere in the room, but it fits very well next to the end of the bunk bed as well, acting almost as if the bunk bed came with integrated end storage.

Smartstuff Paula Deen - Guys Books and Stuff Bookcase

Smartstuff Paula Deen – Guys Books and Stuff Bookcase

Other smart functions that can be found on Smartstuff furniture include built-in reading lights, charging stations, hidden compartments, flip down drawers and an easy drawer removal system. The innovative add-ons not only make life a little easier for us parents and for our kids, but the organization eliminates clutter and makes teaching your kids how to keep their room clean so much easier, as everything has its own place.  I love the Paula Deen Guys Collection so much that I’m already looking ahead to finishing our girl’s room with the Paula Deen Gals Collection.  One of the pieces – the Sliding Cheval Mirror – a full length mirror that slides open to reveal hooks and storage for jewelry, hairbands and clips and other accessories.  And if you have a girl in your home, you know this is a dream come true.  And that’s really what I’ve come to discover about all the Smartstuff furniture.  As wonderful as it looks at first sight, when you dig deeper, you see how intelligent the design is as well.

I told you at the start of this story that I wanted furniture that was safe, stylish and functional, and with the Paula Deen Kids Guys Collection, that’s exactly what I found.  It’s timeless, it’s safe, and it’s the perfect combination of comfortable design and innovative features. And the best part?  It’s affordable.  There wasn’t another brand that came close to matching the craftsmanship and design of the Smartstuff furniture at anywhere near the same price, which makes the purchase decision even easier.  If you’re planning a new kid’s room or are just looking to upgrade your current kid’s furniture, I highly recommend putting Smartstuff at the top of your list.  I did, and my kids and I couldn’t be happier with the choice.

Quinny Moodd Stroller – Designed for Style and Function

You'll buy the Quinny Moodd for its beauty, and you'll fall in love with it for its brilliant design

There are few companies that truly understand great design.  Apple, of course, is one, as their designs are simple and clean yet still boast more functionality than bulkier, more cluttered products.  And in the world of strollers, there’s Quinny.  If Steve Jobs and Jony Ive had teamed up to create a stroller, this would be it.  Their Moodd stroller has beautifully clean lines that are enhanced by its white frame, and yet hidden in its design are numerous smart, well thought out design features and functions.

Let’s start with the basics.  The Quinny Moodd stroller is a birth to 3 1/2 stroller that will quite literally take you anywhere. For ease of pushing, it’s fitted with two large rear wheels and a single, lockable wheel in the front. For city strolling and easy maneuvering, leave the front wheel unlocked, and the Moodd is easily the most maneuverable stroller I’ve ever used.  When the terrain gets a little rougher or you’re going on a long walk in one direction, lock the front wheel for perfect straight line pushing.  As an everyday, around town stroller, the Quinny Moodd is simply perfect to push.

Quinny Moodd Stroller rear facing seat

Quinny Moodd Stroller rear facing seat

Beyond the basics, Quinny’s Moodd is extremely versatile and easily adjustable. To start, the Quinny Moodd can be fitted with either a Quinny Bassinet (the Dreami or the Tukk), making it a perfect choice for newborns and up, but just as impressively, the Moodd is compatible with almost any car seat on the market, thanks to the Multi-Model Adapter.  If you don’t want to use either a bassinet or car seat, Quinny’s standard reclining seat can be used from birth on up, providing a one size fits all option as well, and it works wonderfully.  For newborns or tired toddlers, recline the seat and adjust the footrest up for a perfectly quiet afternoon stroll.  To give your child a better view, turn the seat facing forward and let them take in the world.  Rotating the seat is incredibly quick and easy, as is making adjustments to the seating position.  And while your child is riding in perfect comfort, Quinny thought about your comfort as well, making adjusting the handlebar height to perfectly fit you so easy and accessible you can adjust as you go.

Quinny also considered safety in its design, incorporating a UV +50 sun shade that extends down to protect even the fairest of skin. And for days that are anything but sunny, the rain cover and repellant fabric come in extremely handy. The fabric used on the Moodd is especialy worth noting, as chances are something is going to get spilled or mud is going to be tracked in on little feet. The fabric on both the seat and the bassinets are easy to clean, keeping the Moodd looking like new no matter how dirty things get.

Quinny Moodd Stroller reclining seat

Quinny Moodd Stroller reclining seat

Storage wise, the Moodd comes with an integrated shopping basket that can hold up to 11 pounds, and if you’re headed to the farmer’s market or plan on doing a bigger amount of shopping, I recommend the Quinny Box that attaches between the split rear wheels as well as the matching Zapp Xtra cupholder for your morning coffee or fresh squeezed juice.  For everyday use, the Quinny Moodd modular storage has everything you need to stow your goods while you take your child on the go .

There’s no question that you’ll first fall in love with the Quinny Moodd based on its design, it is as much art as it is a stroller. But with it’s one button unfolding, its customizable options, smooth and easy steering and it’s brilliant design features, you’ll come to love your Quinny Moodd for so much more than its beauty.  For those that love great design and are looking to minimize their amount of baby gear, the Moodd is exactly what you’ve been looking for.

4Moms Origami Stroller – Most Technologically Advanced Stroller

If you're looking for the most technologically advanced stroller perfectly suited to your busy city lifestyle, the 4Moms Origami is without question the stroller that needs to be at the top of your list

In a world where technology is a part of our everyday lives from the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, it only makes sense that a stroller company adapted that technology to create the most advanced stroller ever built.  That company is 4Moms, and their Orgiami Stroller is packed full of the latest tech gadgetry, starting with a self charging battery that charges as you push.

“Why do you need a rechargeable battery on your stroller?” you ask.  For starters, it powers the daytime running and pathway lights on the stroller, ensuring no matter what time of day, your stroller and baby can be seen, while also giving you a better view of your path.  Even more impressively, the battery charges your cell phone or mobile device, so you don’t find yourself in the middle of a walk or shopping trip with no where to plug in. But the lights and integrated cell phone charger are just the begining of the 4Moms Origami’s brilliant features.

4Moms Origami Stroller, front

Anyone that’s ever used a stroller knows the biggest hassle of using one is the process of folding and unfolding it.  To open and to collapse the 4Moms Origami, it’s truly as simple as pushing a button. No locking or unlocking parts with your feet, no twisting handles at the same time as you turn – the power fold and unfold takes away any guesswork on whether you have the stroller set up right or collapsed fully, all with the push of a button.  It’s not only brilliant, it works flawlessly, and eliminates one of the biggest nuisances when using a stroller.  The Origami also folds in three dimensions, which means once folded, it notes a much smaller footprint than other similarly sized strollers.  This is a huge plus for anyone tight on space either in their home or vehicle.

It’s important to note that when designing this function, 4Moms didn’t overlook the fact that sometimes, as parents, we can be slightly absentminded.  And for those of us that find themselves having a forgetful day, there is an alert that reminds us if the baby is still in the stroller.  In the event you ignore the alert, the Origami will simply override your request and not fold itself, thus ensuring the safety of your child.

4Moms Origami Stroller, rear

From there, the fun gadgets continue, as the 4Moms Origami’s high tech design includes an LED screen that is incorporated into the handlebars. Displayed on your stroller screen is the time, outside temperature, steps you’ve taken and how far you’ve traveled – making workout tracking simple and automatic.  The LED screen is also where you’ll see the baby display that reminds you that despite your content and quiet baby, they’re still in there, safe and sound.

As for what ages the Origami is suited for, it comes set up for infants 6 months and up, but prior to that, there are two options. Because I regularly take walks around the neighborhood with a younger baby, I use the Origami Bassinet. It clicks in easily into the base and can be used from newborn up to 6 months. It’s fitted with an oversized sunshade for protection from the sun during any time of day along with an easy carry handle, foot muff and super soft cushion liner. If you often find yourself in and out of the car, there’s also a car seat adapter that works with most Graco car seats.  Once they’ve graduated from the bassinet, the Origami notes a super comfy seat in your choice of five fun colors, with a fabric that’s both comfortable and easy to clean.

Beyond its technology, I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the 4Moms Origami’s overall design. The stroller has 6″ wheels up front and 9″ wheels in the back with all wheel suspension, making city use a pleasure thanks to its comfortable ride.  The split design of the rear wheels with high hanging storage prevents you from kicking the stroller during fast-paced walks.  And unless you find yourself on a shopping spree, there is plenty of storage for everything you need, with cup holders, storage pockets and the removable hanging storage bag all providing ample space to store your children’s and your personal items.

When deciding on the perfect stroller for your family, it’s important to find a stroller that suits you.  And if you’re looking for the most technologically advanced stroller perfectly suited to your busy city lifestyle, the 4Moms Origami is without question the stroller that needs to be at the top of your list.

The Disney Dream 3-Night Bahamian Cruise

The Disney Dream invites you on a world-class adventure that's perfect for families of any age

In almost every child’s life, there exists a brand whose magic and bliss-inducing power is simply unequalled.  At the mere mention of its name, children have been known to cry tears of joy, break out into uncontrollable screams of happiness, or perform a multitude of other exuberant actions due to their uncontrollably blissful state.

The brand to which I’m referring, of course, is Disney.

I loved Disney growing up, and as the father of two young children, I’m still exceptionally well versed in the joys of Disney.  My Disney movie collection is comprised of nearly every classic Disney movie ever made as well as most of the new ones, and my kids have watched all of them multiple times.  So when my wife decided we needed to take a break from our routine and take a well-needed family vacation, we decided it was time to bring Disney to life, and thus began our adventure on Disney’s 3-night Bahamian cruise.

The Disney Dream 3- Night Bahamian Cruise Overview

Disney’s 3-night Bahamian cruise takes place aboard the Disney Dream, a sheer marvel of engineering boasting 14 decks, 1,250 state rooms, and the ability to accommodate up to 4,000 passengers (along with 1,458 crew members).  I’ll be talking much more about the ship in a second, but let me preface by saying the level of luxury and amenities found on the Disney Dream are absolutely world-class, irregardless of your age.  There truly is something for everyone, whether you’re 1 or 100, and the overall experience aboard the Disney Dream was absolutely remarkable.

Disney Dream Cruise Ship Exterior

Disney Dream Cruise Ship

For our 3-night journey, we departed from Port Canaveral, FL, with stops in Nassau (the capital of the Bahamas) and Castaway Cay (Disney’s private island in the Bahamas).  What’s great about the short cruise is that it allowed us to experience the world of Disney even with travel constraints.  We only had six days available for the trip, but we were still able to take in both Disney World and the cruise in a single trip, with plenty of time to immerse ourselves in the Disney experience.

If you’re short on time and looking for a quick summary, here it is:  the Disney Dream is brilliant, and from my experience, the best family cruise ship on the planet.  If you’re questioning whether to book a cruise on the Dream, do it.  It lives up to the hype, it offers world class luxury and entertainment, and both you and your kids will have an absolutely awesome time.

If, however, you need a little more convincing, read on for a more complete look at the Disney Dream and what makes it so great.

The Disney Dream State Rooms

It’s difficult to describe everything offered by the Disney Dream, but let’s start with the state rooms.

Myself, my wife and my two kids (ages 1 and 3 at the time) opted for the deluxe ocean view stateroom with verandah, which is big enough to fit 3-4 comfortably.  Some of the amenities include 246 sq ft. of living space, a queen-size bed, a single convertible sofa, an upper berth pull-down bed if sleeping 4, and a split bath with a tub and shower.

Disney Dream Cruise Deluxe Ocean View Stateroom

Disney Dream Cruise State Room

Comfort wise, the Dream’s state room ranks among the most comfortable state rooms I’ve stayed in.  A Sealy Posturepedic mattress and Egyptian cotton linens provide an exquisite night’s rest.  The kids’ sleeping area can be separated by a privacy curtain, which is a much appreciated feature when you have kids with early bed times.  Technology includes on board wi-fi in your room, a 22″ LDC flat screen tv, a refrigerator, an iPod Docking station and a pair of wireless phones with voicemail messaging that you can take throughout the ship (to stay in touch with your family).  Simply put, the Disney Dream boasts all the amenities found in a luxury hotel room, only in a smaller package.

In addition to the deluxe ocean view room, other state room options vary from either smaller options to the exceptionally lavish.  On the low end, a standard inside stateroom notes 169 sq. ft. of living space, whereas those looking for the ultimate in luxury can opt for the 1,781 sq. ft. Concierge Royal Suite with verandah.

The Disney Dream Kid’s Activities

If you’re considering a Disney cruise, there’s a good chance you have kids.  And if you have kids, you simply won’t find a better cruise ship for the entire family.  The Disney Dream is in a league of its own, and aside from other Disney cruises, there’s not even a close second.  Disney has created the Dream from the ground up to be a ship that caters to every age group, and for kids of any age, it’s simply magical.

Disney Dream Cruise Small World Daycare

It’s a Small World Nursery

The heart of kids’ activities is built around youth clubs – a series of destinations exclusive to kids, broken up into age groups.  For children ages 3 months to 3 years, there’s the “It’s a Small World Nursery”, a colorful space named after the famous Disney attraction of the same name.  It’s here that my two kids went during select portions of our cruise, and they absolutely loved it.  Mickey and the gang even stopped by while they were there, which made my son’s day, to say the least.

From there, kids then move up to Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, both of which are designed for kids ages 3-12.  There’s a huge amount of things for kids to do in the Oceaneer Club, with highlights including four distinctly themed play areas, computer banks with child-friendly computers, a reading area, multiple televisions, and a 103 LCD television where kids can interact with Crush, the animated sea turtle from Finding Nemo.  Connected to the Oceaneer Club is the Oceaneer Lab, which lets kids engage in a variety of hands-on activities, based on their individual interests.  There’s a working animator’s studio, where kids can learn how Disney animation works and create their favorite Disney characters; there’s a sound studio where kids can listen to music and/or create their own; and there’s a craft studio where kids can create a variety of arts and crafts projects.  I talked to numerous kids on the ship who partook in the Oceaneer Club and Lab, and the unanimous review from all was that it was awesome.

And finally, for those of you with pre-teens or teens, there are two sophisticated spaces for your kids:  Edge and Vibe.  Edge is a loft-style lounge exclusive to kids ages 11-14, with highlights including an illuminated dance floor, notebook computers that allow kids to play games and access a unique onboard social media application, and a state-of-the-art video wall that stretches more than 18 feet long and nearly 5 feet tall.

Disney Dream Cruise Teen Vibe

Disney Dream Dream Vibe Night Club for Teens

Vibe is equally as cool, designed to feel like a hip urban coffee shop and stylish night club.  Vibe’s central gathering place is a modern, hi-tech room where teens can kick back and take in a movie on a 103-inch LCD screen with digital surround sound.  In a separate stage area, teens can take part in talents shows, karaoke contests and dance competitions.  There’s a lighted, multi-color disco floor and video wall that set the stage for day- and night-dance parties, where aspiring DJs can spin and mix tracks.  And for a more laid-back experience, teens can recline in one of the individual built-in oval wall pods, where they can watch a personal video screen or play video games.  Again, I talked to kids from both Edge and Vibe, and every one of them said what an awesome time they had.

The key to the Disney Dream is that it’s built around kids of every age, and it caters to each beautifully.  When traveling on the Disney Dream, there’s equal parts entertainment for you and your kids, so while your kids are enjoying one of their clubs and activities built specifically for them, you can enjoy activities built around you.  You never have to worry about their safety or whether they’re having a good time, and the result is an incredible trip for you and your entire family.

The Disney Dream Entertainment

Describing entertainment on the Disney Dream… where do I begin?

Let’s face it – there’s really no other brand that can entertain like Disney, and the Dream is a shining testament to this fact.  Entertainment is both abundant and incredibly well orchestrated – again better than any other cruise I’ve been on.

Disney Dream Cruise Mickey and Minnie Mouse

Disney Character’s Onboard the Dream

For kids, I think the highlight of entertainment is the accessibility of Disney characters, and the Dream does a fantastic job incorporating characters throughout the entire trip.  There are a number of live performances by the characters that let you see the characters in action, and just as importantly, there are many, many opportunities to meet and take photos with your favorite characters throughout the journey.  Some of the appearances are scheduled, some are surprise visits, and the assortment of characters is huge.

For adults (and kids, if they like shows), there are two gorgeous theatres aboard the Disney Dream:  the Buena Vista Theatre and the Walt Disney Theater.  The Buena Vista Theatre is an opulent theatre designed in the grand Art Deco styles of the 1920’s and 1930’s, but despite its classic styling, it features the latest in state-of-the-art projection and sound technology.  Showings include first run films (some in Disney 3D) as well as other popular motion pictures.

Walt Disney Theater Featuring Live Performances

Walt Disney Theater Featuring Live Performances

The Walt Disney Theatre, on the other hand, is where you can take in a live, Broadway style show.  Inspired by by the red carpet and golden trophies of Hollywood award shows, the Walt Disney Theatre is massive and stunning, adorned in red and golden hues, and features both orchestra and balcony seating options.  There’s a variety of live shows performed, ranging from family friendly musicals to comedic revue-style shows, and all are backed by the Walt Disney Theatre’s state-of-the-art behind the scenes technology.  Moveable backdrops and scenery, a projection system for animated scrims and stage lifts, and maybe even pyrotechnics are some of the things you may see during one of the live shows.

I’m not a Broadway critic – I’ll leave show reviews up to you – but I will say that overall, the live shows were exceptionally entertaining and easily ranked as the best I’ve experienced on a cruise.

How good is entertainment on the Disney Dream?  It’s superb.  You will be entertained throughout your journey, from the second you arrive to the second you leave, and you’ll be entertained in a way that only can Disney can do it, which is absolutely brilliantly.

The Disney Dream Dining

Dining aboard the Disney Dream ranges from classic American fare up to more elaborate French options.  When compared to other cruise ships, the dining aboard the Disney Dream again excels.

To make the dining process aboard the Dream as streamlined as possible, Disney has implemented what’s called a rotational dining system.  When booking the cruise, you have the option to select either an early or late dinner seating, and you’re then assigned to a different restaurant each night.  It’s a system that works beautifully, because you never have to wait for seating, your wait staff rotates with you (so you get to know them on a friendly, first-name basis), and dining times are set up to correspond with theater times (so you can always take in a show before or after dinner without fear of scheduling conflicts).

As for the dining itself, standard dinner rotation includes the Animator’s Palate, the Enchanted Garden, and the Royal Palace.  From there, you can opt to upgrade your dining to include the adult-only Palo or Remy dining options.  Other dining options include the indoor/outdoor Cabanas buffet and the old standby,  room service.

Disney Dream Cruise Animators Palate Restaurant

Animator’s Palate Restaurant

For the family, Animator’s Palate will be the highlight of the dining experience, as you’ll experience not only dinner, but also a gorgeous, animator’s studio-inspired design along with an interactive show that actively engages you as you dine.  The cuisine notes a distinctly contemporary Pacific flair, with smoked salmon tartare; endive, arugula and watercress salad, grilled Pacific black cod with sautéed morel mushrooms, and crunchy walnut cake among my personal selections.  All were well-prepared and delicious, as were my wife’s selections of black truffle pasta purseittes and the trio of veal.

On the second night, my family and I enjoyed dinner at the Enchanted Garden, an ornately designed restaurant inspired by the Gardens of Versailles.  The cuisine is described as “market-inspired”, with more traditional culinary options.  I opted for the ahi tuna and avocado tower, duck consommé and caramelized sea scallops, whereas my wife’s selections included north Atlantic lobster ravioli and pan-seared sea bass.  Again, both were exceptionally prepared and delicious, which is truly a remarkable feat considering the amount of individuals being served.

Disney Dream Cruise Remy Restaurant

Luxurious French Dining at Remy Restaurant

On our final night, my wife and I enjoyed dinner for two at Remy, which was unquestionably the highlight of our dining experience aboard the Dream.  Named after the star of Disney’s Ratatouille, Remy is the most luxurious of the Disney Dream’s dining options, with a distinctly French menu that was created by Chef Arnaud Lallement from l’Assiette Champenoise (a Michelin 2-star restaurant just outside Reims, France) and Chef Scott Hunnel (from award-winning Victoria & Albert’s at Walt Disney World Resort).

If you’re looking for a romantic night aboard the Dream, Remy has to be at the top of your dining list.  The decor of is elegantly subdued in an Art Nouveau style, a perfect compliment to the sweeping sunset sea views you’ll experience while dining.  The menu is equally intimate, with complex preparations that are simply sensational.  Coastal turbot with Vin Jaune and gnocchi; lobster with vanilla, bisque and lobster roe foam; young pigeon pie with foie gras, spinach, and tomato; and veal tenderloin sweetbreads and braised shank with marble potatoes were some of the highlights.  Paired with your dining selections, a wine pairing option is available, or choose from an extensive wine list comprised of more than 900 bottles of both old world and new world selections.

Reservations for Remy add $75 per person to your trip (not including wine), but for an intimate night out, it’s a must add to your trip.

The Disney Dream Pools

When you’re in the mood to get wet on the Disney Dream, you’ve got plenty of options.  For the whole family, there’s Donald’s pool, with an approximately 5 foot depth and plenty of lounge chairs to take in some sun.  Close to Donald’s Pool is Mickey’s Pool, which notes a 2 foot depth and is perfect for smaller children.  And for new walkers, there’s Nemo’s Reef, an enclosed water play area featuring a variety of fountains, jets and bubblers in a unique Finding Nemo setting.

For the adults looking to take a break from the kids, be sure to check out the Quiet Cove Pool, an adults-only pool noting a four foot depth and connecting bar.

Disney Dream Cruise Water Slide

Disney Dream’s 765 foot long quaDuck Water Coaster

And finally, for those looking for a more exciting ride, there’s the AquaDuck – a 765 foot long water coaster that’s the first of its kind on a cruise ship.  During the ride, you’ll travel up, down, off and around the ship in an enclosed acrylic tube, with a grand finale of a four deck drop before the ride’s over.  And yes, it’s as awesome at is sounds.  You and your kids will love it, guaranteed.

The Disney Dream Spa + Salon and Fitness Centers

For those of you looking to stay fit and beautiful during your cruise, the Disney Dream boasts both a spa/salon and a fitness center.  I didn’t partake in either – there simply wasn’t enough time – but both feature the same amenities you’ll find at other luxury spa and fitness centers.

In the spa, highlights include a range of spa treatments, massages, body wraps, facials, aromatherapy and more, whereas salon services include manicures, pedicures and hairstyling.  As for the fitness center, choose from a variety of  state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment and weight machines as well as numerous classes and seminars offering aerobics, yoga and Pilates instruction.  Best of all, much of the equipment offers gorgeous ocean views, allowing you take in the beautiful Caribbean waters as you work up a sweat.

The Disney Dream Ports of Call

For our three day Bahamian cruise, there were two ports of call:  Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, as well as Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

In Nassau, our excursion led us to the Atlantis resort, which we purchased as an add-on for our trip.  A shuttle takes you directly to the resort from the dock, making the journey seamless, and you’re then given a brief tour of the main Atlantis shopping destinations.   From there, my wife and I opted to take part in the dolphin deep water swim, which not only lets you get up close and personal with the dolphins, it also lets you experience them in a more natural setting.  You first get to meet the dolphins (our dolphins were actually American, rescued from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina), and you then get to swim with them directly, which was absolutely the highlight of the experience.

If you’re debating between the dolphin interaction and the dolphin swim, go for the swim.  It’s well worth it, and for someone that’s never swam with a dolphin before, it’s an incredible experience.

Disney Dream Cruise Castaway Cay

Disney’s Castaway Cay

The second stop – Disney’s Castaway Cay – is a private stop reserved exclusively for Disney cruise ships.  There’s a huge assortment of activities for all age groups, ranging from snorkeling, boating, biking, relaxing on the beach or exploring one of the two 2,400 sq. ft. water play areas.  As is the case on the ship, there are exclusive adult-only areas on Castaway Cay that for some added rest and relaxation, and there are also numerous areas and activities on the island designated for kids of certain ages.

It’s fantastic way to spend a day, and no matter what you’re in the mood for, whether you want to take a dip in the ocean or just spend on a day on the island, there’ something for everyone.

The Disney Dream 3-Night Bahamian Cruise Conclusion

Looking back at my time aboard the Disney Dream, there’s no question Disney has set the standard for family cruises.  Even without kids, the Disney Dream is a superbly designed and luxurious cruise ship, but for the family, there’s nothing in the same realm.  The amount of things to do, and the fact that virtually every activity is tailored to you based on your age, means that your time on the Disney Dream will be perfectly suited to you and your family, better than any other cruise you’ll encounter.  Add in an impeccable level of service, delicious dining options and an incredible amount of amenities, and the Disney Dream easily establishes itself as the world’s foremost family cruise destination.

BABYBJÖRN Baby Gear

In addition to their baby carriers, BABYBJÖRN is a leader at offering innovative, functional baby gear for every room in your house

With Father’s Day taking place this past weekend, it got me thinking about what  products make my life a little easier as a dad, and what things I would recommend to those of you about to undertake fatherhood for yourself (of course, the same recommendations apply to moms as well).  Looking around my own home, it didn’t take long to see there’s a brand that prominently holds a place in nearly every room of my house, and that company is BABYBJÖRN.

Best known for their incredibly functional child carriers, BABYBJÖRN makes a fantastic range of children’s products, all of which apply a remarkable level of innovation to things that at first glance may seem like straightforward items. Bouncers, bibs, plates, spoons – I own BABYBJÖRN and non-BABYBJÖRN versions of each, and let me say immediately that I wish I had opted for the BABYBJÖRN variants from the beginning.  They’re just so much better than the non-BABYBJÖRN counterparts, they’ve basically obsoleted them in my house.

If you’re a parent of a young child, here’s a list of the BABYBJÖRN products I use and my experiences with each.  Hopefully it will help make your decision a little easier as you hunt for the best baby gear for yourself.

BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy

In recommending BABYBJÖRN, it’s only fitting to start with their child carriers.  For parents of newborns, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is the single best way to transport your newborn, especially for those of you with a more active lifestyle.  Speaking from personal experience, my wife and I both do as much as possible outdoors, and the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy allowed us to get outside almost immediately following the birth of our daughter.  Walks, trips to the park with our son, errands – we use the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy pretty much every day for different tasks.

Helping make the BABYBJÖRN so great, the Baby Carrier Synergy builds on the company’s tradition of innovative front carriers, offering an incredible amount of features aimed at ensuring both you and your child’s comfort.  From an operator standpoint, carrying your child in the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is incredibly comfortable, thanks to a lumbar support system for your lower back mated to padded, easily adjustable shoulder straps.  It’s a system that does a fantastic job distributing weight evenly across your back and shoulders, and as a result, makes it easy to carry your child hands free for extended periods of time in complete comfort.  Helping keep you and your child cool during higher temperatures, the Baby Carrier Synergy is constructed from smooth, breathable 3D mesh fabric.  Not only does it do a fantastic job wicking away heat and moisture, it’s also non-toxic, meaning it won’t irritate your baby’s skin (and it’s safe to chew on during the teething phase).  Lastly, the Synergy’s unique two piece design makes it easy to get your child in and out of the carrier by yourself.

As for your baby, they benefit from the same fantastic level of comfort you do.  The BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy features an ergonomic, physiologically correct design that supports your child’s head, back and hips in a natural crouching position.  For younger children, the position faces inward, towards you, and as your child grows and develops the ability to hold up their head, they can then face outward to view their surroundings while on the move.  Thanks to its two-piece design, should your child fall asleep while in the BABYBJÖRN, you can easily lay your baby down without waking him or her up.  I can’t tell you how many times we’ve resorted to a walk around the neighborhood to soothe our less-than-happy daughter, and the Synergy magically calms her and puts her to sleep.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy include:

  • Breathable and cool fabric in three colors
The airy, breathable 3D mesh wicks moisture and heat away from you and your baby. The mesh on the inside of the baby carrier is especially soft and feels comfortable against your child’s skin, while gently shaping itself to his or her body.  Available in black, marine blue and white.
  • Provides back stability
The enhanced lumbar support is individually adjusted and provides comfortable back stability. The back support and the wide shoulder straps work together to provide maximum carrying comfort and relieve pressure.
  • Ergonomic for your child
The baby carrier has an ergonomic design that provides the proper support for your child’s head, back and hips from birth.  The head support is adjustable and can be folded down so that the child may be carried facing forward when he or she is a bit older and able to hold up his or her own head.
  • Adjusts to your baby
Fits babies from 8 pounds and 21 inches up to 26 pounds.

If you’re looking for the perfect child carrier for you newborn or young child, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is it.  It’s cool, incredibly comfortable for you and your child, and it allows you to get outside and active almost immediately after having a baby.  Of all the baby gear I own, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy may very well be at the top of my must-have baby item list.  You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy from Amazon.com for $113 – $116 (depending on color choice).

BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier

Having two young children, my wife and I actually own two baby carriers:  the previously discussed BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy, and the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier.  Whereas the Synergy is perfect for our younger, smaller daughter, the Comfort Carrier is geared towards larger, slightly older children (more specifically, babies weighing 13 pounds up to toddlers weighing 31 pounds).  We actually used the Synergy for our son first, and upgraded him to the Comfort Carrier after our daughter’s arrival.  The transition has worked perfectly.

One of the key differences between the two is the addition of a hip belt on the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier, which helps distribute heavier loads to your hips from your back and shoulders.  My son weighs about 29 pounds, and the Comfort Carrier does a fantastic job spreading his weight downward, thanks to the hip belt.  Ideally, the more weight you can transfer to your hips the better, as your lower half is capable of handling weight significantly better than your top half.

From a construction standpoint, the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier is made from certified 100% organically grown cotton fabric – a material that’s not only comfortable, it’s safe for your baby’s skin and mouth (should they be teething).  As with other BABYBJÖRN carriers, your child can face either towards you or away from you, but since it’s geared towards slightly older babies, most will probably prefer facing outward, to enjoy their surroundings.  Should your child wish to face in, however, a new wide position for your baby’s legs allows you to adjust the Comfort Carrier accordingly.

Having used the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier on more walks and hikes than I count, I can tell you the Comfort Carrier lives up to its billing.  It’s extremely comfortable to use on longer hikes, and the hip belt is a welcome addition, beautifully transferring the weight onto your hips, where you want it.  As for my son, he adores it.  He loved his original Synergy, and there’s no question he loves to explore even more in the Comfort Carrier.  It’s a fantastic addition to the BABYBJÖRN lineup, and it’s the perfect baby carrier for slightly larger, older babies.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier include:

  • Maximum carrying comfort
Provides optimum weight distribution and lightens your load, thanks to the adjustable waist belt and shoulder straps. Most of the weight is transferred to your hips, so you can carry your little one for longer periods without wearing out your back.
  • For children up to 2 years
You can use this baby carrier from when your child weighs 13 lbs/6 kg (around 3 months) until he or she weighs at most 31 lbs/14 kg (around 2 years).
  • Flexible leg positions
For enhanced comfort, your child’s leg position can be varied from normal to wide. As with all our baby carriers, you can choose whether you want to carry your child facing you or facing forward.

You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier from Amazon.com for $138.

BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air

Baby bouncers are funny things.  I own a total of four, three of which were received as gifts, and the last of which (the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air) the lone bouncer I’ve actually purchased.  With the first three, my children absolutely hated them, so much so that I genuinely didn’t understand why anyone would use a baby bouncer.  But after my wife’s insistence to try the BABYBJÖRN, I gave bouncers a final chance to prove their worth, and the Babysitter Balance Air has demonstrated itself as a far superior version to any other bouncers I’ve encountered.

First and foremost, the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air’s bouncing motion is perfect.  It takes only a touch to create a fluid, gentle bouncing motion that your child will absolutely adore.  At dinner, for example, we had our newborn daughter on the floor situated in the Babysitter Balance Air, and we can use literally one toe to keep her gently bouncing throughout dinner (while she lays there, perfectly content).  And because it’s so easy to create the fluid rocking motion, as your child learns to control her movements, they also gain the ability to sooth themselves in the BABYBJÖRN through their own bouncing.

Now that temperatures are warming up, we’ve also had our daughter outside in the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air, and it works just as well as outside as it does in.  Constructed from an airy, breathable mesh (hence the name Babysitter Balance Air), the BABYBJÖRN is fantastic at making sure your child doesn’t overheat thanks to its excellent air flow and moisture eliminating properties, and it’s durable enough to stay looking like new after numerous washes.  Another great feature for outside use is the Babysitter’s three positions (play, rest and sleep), giving your child ability to see what’s around them while awake but easily adjusting when they want to take a rest.

More features of the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air include:

  • Airy and pleasant mesh fabric available in seven colors
The airy, breathable mesh wicks away moisture and heat. It is easy to keep clean and dries quickly after washing.
  • Develops motor skills and balance
The calm and natural rocking from the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air refines your child’s motor skills and balance. The bouncer is recommended by pediatricians.
  • Fun for your child
The child’s own movements make the bouncer rock. No batteries are needed. Your child sets the pace, so the experience is fun and soothing at the same time.
  • Three positions plus transport mode
The BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air has three positions: play, rest and sleep. It can also be folded into a compact transport mode, making it easy to pack or store when not in use.

Putting it simply, if you’re looking for a baby bouncer that actually works and one that your children will absolutely adore, this is it.  You can purchase your own BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air from Amazon.com $120 – $165, depending on color.

BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib

You might be wondering why I’m recommending a bib, as it seems like such a basic baby item, but the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib addresses the problem no other bib does:  dropped food.  Sure, bibs protect the upper portion of your children’s clothes, but as any parent known, eating with young kids mean a wealth of dropped food and spilled drinks.  So while your children’s clothes stay clean on top, the bottom fares significantly worse.

Ingeniously, the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib is constructed from a softer plastic that has a lip built into the bottom of it, catching food as it’s dropped and keeping it out of your child’s lap.  The lip even catches unexpected drink spills.  As a family that eats out on a regular basis, I can’t tell you how many changes of clothes the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib has saved.  It’s simple, but it’s brilliant.

More benefits of the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib include:

  • Easy to keep clean
The BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib is easily rinsed off under running water or cleaned in the dishwasher.
  • Well-conceived design
The neckband rests nicely and comfortably on the child’s neck. The bib’s size has been tailored to make sure that the spill pocket does not get stuck on the table’s edge. Food remains in the spill pocket no matter how active the baby. The bib also has a practical hole to hang it up by.
  • Can be used for a long time
Adjustable snap adapts size to fit your growing child perfectly.

You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib directly from Amazon.com for $11.

BABYBJÖRN Plate, Spoon and Cup

Last but not least, I couldn’t leave out the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup.  From the moment he was able to sit in his high chair, my son was determined to use a proper plate and utensils to eat his meals, so we began the daunting quest of trying to find eating tools that he could use.  Ultimately, the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup are by fare the best options we found, allowing him to eat things impossible with the other utensils we tried.

The BABYBJÖRN plate, for example, is larger than traditional baby plates, utilizing a three-leaf clover shape that sits firmly on the table, thanks to its rubber base and larger surface area.  Because of its size, it’s easy to serve your child multiple food options and keep them separated, and the high sidewalls work perfectly with the BABYBJÖRN spoon to help your child scoop up the food of their choosing.  Most importantly, however, is that unlike traditional plates and bowls that have tapered bases, the BABYBJÖRN plates’ wide base stays securely in place when your child bangs on the plate’s rim.  Before the BABYBJÖRN plate, nearly every meal ended with my son banging the edge of his bowl or plate and watching food sail across the room.  Thanks to the BABYBJÖRN, my son’s food catapulting days are over.

As for the BABYBJÖRN spoon, as already noted, it works in tandem with the high edge of the BABYBJÖRN plate to help scoop up food.  It also features a slightly larger design than other baby spoons with a deeper spoon area, allowing your child to scoop things impossible with other baby spoons.  The first example that comes to mind is peas.  My son loves peas, and the BABYBJÖRN plate and spoon are the only two things I’ve found that allow him to scoop peas with success.  He can scoop them easily, and they stay in place as he’s transferring to them to his mouth.

Lastly, my son loves drinking out of normal cup, and the BABYBJÖRN cup has been a fantastic aid at teaching him to drink without a lid.  It’s the perfect size for his smaller hands; it features a wider rubber base that does a fantastic job as resisting tipping, and it’s dishwasher/microwave/freezer safe.  It’s the perfect compliment the BABYBJÖRN plate and spoon.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup include:

  • Well-conceived design
The three-leaf clover shape of the plate helps the child to scoop up food onto the spoon. The spoon is compatible with the plate’s shape and works using either the right or left hand. It has a short handle that is simple for small hands to grip.
  • Rests firmly on the table
The plate rests firmly on the table and will not tip even if the child bangs on the plate’s rim. The rubber base prevents it from sliding around.
  • Easy to clean
The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon are dishwasher-safe but can also be washed by hand. You may warm baby’s food on the plate in the microwave oven.

You can pick up the BABYBJÖRN plate from Amazon.com for $23 and the BABYBJÖRN cup from Amazon.com for $13.
