Luxury Redefined: Unveiling the Admiral Suite Experience at Boston Harbor Hotel

My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying in the Admiral Suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel, and I have to say, it was an experience we will never forget.  From the moment we arrived at the Boston Harbor Hotel, we were struck by the elegance and sophistication of the property. The hotel’s stunning waterfront location not only provides breathtaking views of Boston’s skyline and the harbor.

The lobby is spacious and welcoming, with high ceilings and a grand staircase leading up to the second floor. The decor is tasteful and elegant, with marble floors, plush seating, and beautiful artwork and historical maps adorning the walls.  Worth noting is that the hotel staff were friendly and attentive, greeting us warmly and making each of us feel right at home the second we stepped out of our car.

Upon stepping into our suite, we were blown away by the luxurious amenities and attention to detail found in every aspect of the room.

The suite itself was spacious and beautifully decorated, with stunning views of the harbor. We loved the separate living area, which provided plenty of space for our family to relax and unwind. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and we all slept soundly each night of our stay.

One of the highlights of our stay was the private terrace that came with the Admiral Suite. The terrace was spacious and offered breathtaking views of the harbor, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine. We loved the comfortable seating and outdoor dining area, which allowed us to take full advantage of the beautiful weather during our stay.

The attention to detail in the Admiral Suite was exceptional, and we appreciated the little touches that made our stay feel extra special. From the plush bathrobes and slippers to the luxurious toiletries and fresh flowers, every detail was carefully thought out and executed to perfection.

As a family, we also appreciated the hotel’s family-friendly amenities and activities. The Kid’s Club was a hit with our kids, who loved the arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, and cooking classes. We also enjoyed spending time at the hotel’s indoor pool, which provided a welcome respite from the summer heat.

The hotel’s location on the harbor provided plenty of opportunities for family-friendly activities, from exploring the nearby Boston Children’s Museum to taking a scenic harbor cruise. We also loved the hotel’s close proximity to some of Boston’s best restaurants and attractions.

Overall, our experience staying in the Admiral Suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel was exceptional. The luxurious amenities, stunning views, and family-friendly offerings all contributed to making our stay one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. Enchantment Resort Sedona

A luxurious escape in one of the most beautiful natural settings in the world

There are few moments in life that truly take your breath away, but as I stepped onto the grounds of the Enchantment Resort Sedona, I knew I was in place that would evoke emotions that would last an eternity. From the stunning natural surroundings to the luxurious accommodations, every aspect of this resort was beyond compare. I was immediately struck by the breathtaking beauty of the red rock formations that surrounded the property, and as I explored the resort further, I was delighted to discover a wide range of amenities and activities that made my stay simply unforgettable.

The accommodations at the Enchantment Resort are, by all accounts, world-class. I had the pleasure of staying in one of their spacious and beautifully appointed casitas, which featured a private outdoor terrace with breathtaking views of the red rocks. The casita itself was impeccably designed, with tasteful Southwestern-inspired decor and all the modern amenities one could ask for. I appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the plush bathrobes and locally sourced bath products, which added an extra layer of luxury to my stay.

Enchantment Resort Restaurant Options

One of the highlights of my stay at the Enchantment Resort was the incredible culinary experience that I had while dining out in the resort’s superb restaurant options:  Che-Ah-Chi and Tii Gavo. The cuisine was absolutely delicious, with a focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that showcased the flavors of the region.

The resort’s signature restaurant, Che-Ah-Chi, offers a fine dining experience that was truly unforgettable, with stunning views of the red rocks and an innovative menu that blends classic Southwestern flavors with contemporary culinary techniques.  The food is matched only by their incredible wine pairings – so incredible, in fact, that the restaurant was awarded the 2022 Wine Spectators Best of Award of Excellence. It came as no surprise, however,  as they offer over 500 different labels from around the world along with a world-class sommelier on hand to ensure you find the perfect bottle. I also loved the casual elegance of Tii Gavo, which offers a more relaxed atmosphere and a menu of traditional Southwestern dishes, as well as handcrafted cocktails, including the perfect prickly pear margarita and local beers. I highly recommend dining here for both lunch and after dinner cocktails, as the restaurant’s bar is a wonderful way to socialize and meet new people.

Enchantment Resort Spa

As someone who loves to indulge in spa treatments, I was thrilled to discover that the Enchantment Resort’s Mii amo spa is consistently ranked as one of the best spas in the country. The spa offers a range of treatments that are designed to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and it was this holistic approach that left me feeling renewed and refreshed.

From the soothing atmosphere of the spa’s relaxation rooms to the expertly administered massages, facials, and body treatments, every aspect of my spa experience was simply divine.

I personally had the pleasure of experiencing a cupping massage, my first but not last, at the Enchantment Resort’s Mii amo spa, and it was truly one of the most amazing spa treatments I’ve ever experienced. The therapist was incredibly skilled and knowledgeable about the technique, and she made me feel completely at ease throughout the entire treatment.

As she applied the cups to my back and neck, I could feel the tension and stress melting away from my body.  The sensation of the cups gently pulling at my skin was incredibly relaxing, and I felt a deep sense of release and rejuvenation as the therapist expertly moved the cups around to different areas of my body that were harboring stress.

By the end of the treatment, I felt like a new person, completely free of any pain or tension that I had been experiencing before. The cupping massage at the Enchantment Resort is truly a must-try experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and effective way to relax and rejuvenate. The Mii amo spa is truly a gem, and the cupping massage is just one of the many amazing treatments that they offer.

Palazzo Terranova

Palazzo Terranova invites guests to experience Italy as it was meant to be experienced: relaxed, classic and beautiful

Italy.  The mere mention of it conjures up romantic images of incredibly delicious food and wine, stunning landscapes, and quaint villages with tiny shops that you can stroll in and out while savoring the fact you’re in such a beautiful place.

Visit Italy, however, and you’ll soon discover those visions of romantic, peaceful bliss you had planned turn out to be, shall we say, inaccurate.  The problem isn’t with Italy itself; the problem is that those same romantic images that attracted you to Italy just so happened to attract a few others as well.  And when I say a few others, I mean countless legions of tourists that have managed to overwhelm virtually all of Italy’s main attractions.  As a result, there are really two versions of Italy:  Italy for tourists; and Italy for those who live in it.

But before you think I’m telling you not to visit Italy, let me be clear:  I’m not.  Instead, my advice when visiting Italy is to choose wisely.  Those romantic Italian images you’ve dreamt about do exist, but to find them, you need to venture off the beaten path.  Get away from the tourists, and you’ll experience Italy as it should be experienced:  as a stunning, unspoiled destination steeped in history that’s remained largely unchanged for the past few centuries.

Palazzo Terranova is an exclusive and luxurious villa nestling in the hills of Umbria. This idyllic, rustic scene has changed little since the late 17th century when the palazzo’s original owners gazed from the romantic Romeo and Juliet balconies. High in the tranquil hills of Umbria, among the most poetic of Italian landscapes, the good life -La Dolce Vita - still reigns.

A view of the Umbrian landscape as seen from Palazzo Terranova’s balcony

This is Umbria

For travelers seeking countryside views and the allure of Italian food and wine, the traditional choice is Tuscany.  But if you’re considering Tuscany, allow me to recommend Umbria as an alternative.  The landlocked eastern neighbor of Tuscany, the region of Umbria shares many of Tuscany’s desirable attributes, but for the most part, it largely manages to do so without the fanfare and the crowds.  The food is better, the views are beyond perfect, and many of the medieval hilltop towns are virtually untouched by tourists.  It’s a region that blends art, culture, history and beauty, and yet most of the places I had the pleasure of visiting were completely devoid of the Americanized tourist-oriented feel that’s infiltrated so many other places.

Of the four-and-a-half weeks I spent in Italy – two of which were in the region of Umbria – it was in Umbria where I felt the most Italian.  I drank espresso at a tiny café with a handful of locals; I dined in a restaurant where the only staff was a husband  waiting outside to usher you in while his wife brought you plate after plate of authentic, home-style Italian cuisine; and my son played soccer on the old stone streets with some of the kids that lived in the town.  Every minute of my time in Umbria was magnificent.

So how did I arrive in Umbria?  It began with a recommendation from a friend.

Petersham Properties

“If you’re going to Italy,” he said, “you can’t stay in a hotel.  You have to rent a villa.”  It seemed simple enough, until I actually started looking at villas.  The problem wasn’t finding an available house to rent – there’s a vast assortment of villas to stay in.  The problem was picking one.  Unlike hotels that note tens or hundreds of reviews written about them, house rentals offer up a brief description and a few photos – not exactly confidence-inspiring when you’re spending two weeks in the secluded Italian countryside.  When I told my friend of my dilemma, he recommended a company by the name of Petersham Properties.

Based in the UK, Petersham represents a variety of vacation rentals around the world.  More importantly, however, is the fact that the Petersham team actually goes out and hand-picks each of the properties they work with, so they have an intimate firsthand knowledge of all the properties they represent.  From there, Petersham handles every element of your trip.  Transportation, sightseeing, cooking classes, wine tasting – they’re like your personal concierge during your stay.

When I went to Petersham Properties, I had yet to pick a property, or even the specific area I wanted to stay.  I told them the amount of time I wanted to spend in Italy; the general region I wanted to visit; and some of the things I was looking for in the property.  From there, the Petersham team worked with me to craft the perfect vacation package, and as I’m about to detail, the job they did is one that can only be described as remarkable.

Palazzo Terranova as seen from the rear

Welcome to Palazzo Terranova

In working with Petersham, my list of requirements was expansive.  I wanted privacy, luxury and relaxation.  I wanted a view of the Italian countryside.  I wanted to be able to experience Italian culture and cuisine.  There was more, but I don’t want to sound pretentious.  Ultimately they recommended two properties, the first of which is a 17th century estate known as Palazzo Terranova (I’ll be detailing the second estate in a separate article).

Hidden amongst the Umbrian hills, Palazzo Terranova is an escape from the rest of the world.  Your GPS isn’t going to find it, and if you book a rental car, be warned:  things are going to get a little rugged.  But once you’re there, it’s a place worthy of the journey.

My first night arriving in Perugia, and then Palazzo Terranova, things felt eerily unfamiliar compared to the other parts of Italy which I had already experienced.  The drive started out traditionally with plenty of cars and people, but as we drew closer to the Palazzo, traffic diminished, then disappeared, before we finally ascended up the rutted gravel road leading to the Palazzo itself.  After a few minutes questioning our vehicle’s prowess in navigating such terrain, we finally reached the Palazzo’s gates.  The road smoothed, and the Italian cypress lined driveway framed beautifully the soft glow emanating from the Palazzo.  Not to boast in my fortune of finding such a place, but I have to tell you:  if you’ve ever fantasized about the romanticism of staying in a 17th century Italian villa, the reality of it (at least when speaking of the Palazzo) exceeded every pre-conceived notion I had.  Upon first sight, it was the most romantic and stunning place I’ve ever seen.

Entering the Palazzo only added to the allure.  There’s no check-in area – you enter through the Palazzo’s front door as if it were your home – and after passing through a brief entranceway, you enter an intimate seating room with a huge stone fireplace and a piano once played by Elton John during his time at the Palazzo.  To your right is the dining room, home to one of the Palazzo’s most notable pieces of art, and to your left is the bar and another intimate dining area, where my wife and I would come to enjoy numerous candle-lit dinners.

The suites themselves start on the next floor up – there are eight in total – and all are magnificent.  Exhausted from our day of travel, we decided to forego a nighttime stroll of the property and head straight to our room.  A soak in the marble tub, a few glasses of wine, and our day of travel was already forgotten.  Before bed, however, I opened the doors to the Romeo and Juliet balcony, and although dark, I made out briefly what appeared to be a large canine figure running across the grounds.  “Someone’s pet dog?  Possibly a wolf?  This is the country after all, although I’m not sure wolves are native to central Italy” I thought.

As it turns out, both were true.  It was indeed a pet, and it was indeed a wolf.  It was a pet wolf named Boris, who lives on the grounds of the Palazzo.  Why?  Because the owner of the Palazzo heard stories of another wolf living in the area, and he wanted one as well.  As it turns out, Boris is somewhat leery of guests, as initially he tended to be content simply observing us from a distance.  But as the week went on, his fondness for us grew, and by the end of our time at the Palazzo he became a wonderfully affable companion.  He loves tug-of-war and fetch as much as any red-blooded canine does, and for my three year old son, Boris easily ranked as one of his favorite things at Palazzo Terranova.  Should you have an aversion to pet wolves, however, they will keep him contained during your stay.  But believe me, nothing adds to the ambience of staying in such a royal place more than having a wolf roaming the countryside along with you.

An exceptional suite on the first floor which is painted corn yellow and pale green. It is large and gracious with breathtaking views across the valley. The luxurious bedroom features a super king size fourposter bed and there is an adjoining dressing room. In the large en-suite bathroom there is a hand-carved marble bath and separate shower room.

Palazzo Terranova La Traviata Suite

Palazzo Terranova Suites

Residing in Palazzo Terranova is nothing like residing in a hotel.  Hotels tend be neutral and unadventurous in an attempt to not offend anyone’s particular tastes.  Palazzo Terranova is the opposite.  It’s colorful, adventurous and filled with personality.  A tremendous amount of detail and thought went into the restoration of Palazzo Terranova, and you can feel the intricacy of the restoration in every room.

My wife and I personally resided in the La Traviata suite on the first floor – an expansive pale yellow and green room with adjoining dressing room and bathroom and views of the Umbrian landscape.  The room was massive, with multiple sitting areas, a desk, and what may have been the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in.  Calling it exceptional is an understatement – perfect is more appropriate.

Having the Palazzo to ourselves, we could have chosen any of the other seven suites, and all were magnificent.  Every suite is huge, all boast soaring ceilings, and each notes a completely distinct décor and color scheme.  My main recommendation is to pick a room with views of the countryside, as it’s simply magical to wake up and watch the fog sweep across the hills.

In addition to the suites, there’s also a pair of sitting rooms (one on the first floor and one on the second) that are centered amongst the guest suites, both of which offer additional space to relax, read one of the Palazzo’s endless supply of books or enjoy a cappuccino outside your room.

Dining at Palazzo Terranova can only be described as extraordinary, with Chef Alex creating a variety of seasonal Umbrian dishes from locally sourced ingredients. From fresh bread to perfectly cooked meat and seafood, there is no dish that will disappoint.

One of the many dishes created by the wonderful Chef Alex

Palazzo Terranova Dining

When working with Petersham Properties in reserving Palazzo Terranova, one of their key recommendations was reserving a chef during the stay.  My wife is an incredible chef in her own right, so it was something we deliberated about, but ultimately we followed their recommendation.  And it’s a choice I can’t recommend enough.

Chef Alex excelled at creating absolutely impeccable dishes for both lunch and dinner.  Meals were all 3-4 courses, perfectly proportioned, and thanks to his use of fresh, local ingredients, perfectly exemplified what you’d expect from Italian cuisine.  If you’re questioning whether a private chef can prepare meals that live up to your expectations, don’t.  Chef Alex defied logic.  During my month in Italy, I didn’t eat a better meal than the ones prepared at Palazzo Terranova, and in truth, I’ve eaten at AAA five diamond restaurants that haven’t brought me as much joy as those of Alex.

Paired with the dining, the service was absolutely world-class.  As it was my first time renting a villa, I didn’t know what to expect from the overall dining experience, but after experiencing it, it was flawless.  Service was carried out with a precision you’d expect only from the world’s finest restaurants – never overbearing, but perfectly precise and attentive.

The overall dining experience at Palazzo Terranova was exemplary, and along with the service, it’s one of those things that ended up being one of the most memorable elements of our time at the Palazzo.

For 'al fresco' dining there are pizza evenings where everyone can join in and make their own pizza in the traditional wood oven.

The exemplary service at Palazzo Terranova

Palazzo Terranova Service & Amenities

Despite its grand scale, Palazzo Terranova is markedly warm and intimate, due in large part to the staff’s desire to make everything as perfect as possible.  It’s true of the service itself, and it’s true of the amenities the staff selects for you.  Laundry was washed and pressed looking better than the way you bought it.  Massively gorgeous bouquets randomly showed up in our bedroom.  Soaps, linens, and every other amenity offered were all exemplary, exceeding what you’d find a five-star hotel, even by American standards.

And while the exceptional service can tend to be overbearing, at the Palazzo it never was.  One of my fears in renting a staffed villa was that there’d be a pervasive feeling of being watched.  But as it turned out, the exact opposite held true.  It felt as though the Palazzo was ours, and we had the perfect team there to attend to our needs.

Describing the Palazzo staff as staff, however, isn’t wholly accurate.  Technically, they were our staff, but truthfully, after spending a week with them, they felt more like family than hired help.  The Palazzo is really their home, and they welcomed us into it.  They went out of their way ensuring our time at the Palazzo was perfect, they showed us Umbria in a way we never could have experienced it by ourselves, and our kids simply adored them.  We loved every member of the Palazzo Terranova team, and it’s the staff more than anything that we most fondly look back on during our stay at the Palazzo.

Palazzo Terranova Activities

In planning a trip to Palazzo Terranova, there are both on-site activities and excursions to the surrounding areas.  We worked with Petersham Properties to plan the activities for the entire week, which eliminated any guesswork or planning when we actually got there.  Transportation, meals, what to do, what to see – all was choreographed beautifully in advance and subsequently executed perfectly.

On the Palazzo Terranova grounds, a few basic activities you can enjoy include a swim in the infinity edge pool overlooking the Italian countryside, a workout in the fitness center, enjoying a book from the library, or relaxing on one of the grounds’ numerous outdoor seating areas and enjoying the stunning vistas.  During at least one night of your stay I highly recommend booking the pizza party, which offers the quintessential Italian al fresco dining experience.  It started with Chef Alex firing up the wood-fired stove in the morning, and for dinner, Alex and my family crafted our favorite pizzas with a variety of local ingredients.  As if that wasn’t enough, we then made our way outside to enjoy the pizza on the outdoor terrace, along with a lovely bottle of Rosé and stunning sunset views.  (And if you’re wondering how many pizzas we made, I lost count at 7).

Venture outside Palazzo Terranova, and you’re in the perfect location to take in a variety of art and culture.  One of the first things my wife and I did was travel to Sansepolcro – a town with roots dating back to AD 1000 that was the birthplace of early Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca.  In Sansepolcro we visited the Museo Civico, where you can witness one of Piero’s most well-known works – The Resurrection – a stunning fresco depicting the resurrection of Jesus dating back to roughly 1463.  It’s a work of art that’s not only magnificent to behold (Aldous Huxley called it “the greatest picture in the world”), it’s also one that singlehandedly saved the town, as British officer Tony Clarke defied orders during World War II to conduct a mass shelling of Sansepolcro after learning of the fresco’s existence.

If, on the other hand, you’re in the mood for a culinary adventure, two fantastic options include a truffle hunt with Tartufi Bianconi and/or wine tasting excursion.  For the truffle hunt, the day began with a guided stroll in search of the ever elusive truffle – a feat we met with tremendous success thanks to our two wonderfully talented canine companions – followed by a trip back to the family-run truffle headquarters (it’s their home, along with a small facility for them to package their unbelievably delicious truffle goods).  While there, we had the pleasure of receiving an intimate cooking demonstration and witnessing the art of true Italian home cooking, which was then followed up with a multi-course family meal enjoyed with our hosts.  Every course was not only sensationally good, each was brimming with more truffles than I’ve ever witnessed on a single plate.  It was phenomenal.

The wine tasting, on the other hand, didn’t rank quite as well as the truffle hunt, although once you’ve been served copious amounts of truffles, you’re going to be hard-pressed to better such a delectable culinary experience.  For the wine tasting we headed to Montefalco, an area in Perugia highly regarded for its wine production.  Once there, one of the first things we decided to do was pose in the vineyard, although this turned out to be somewhat of a bad idea, as Italians take their grapes seriously.  So seriously, in fact, that they have motion sensor alarms in place ensuring their grapes safety.  Alarms went off, a security team came running, and we were half questioning whether or not we were about to be tazered.  Despite the security lockdown, however, we still managed to get our photo with the vineyard, although our grand vision of stealing the vineyard and taking it home with us failed miserably.

Following “the incident”, as we’ll call it, we were then given a tour of the facilities and led to the main store area, where we sampled various wines from the region.  If you’re a wine aficionado, it’s worth heading to Montefalco to gain insight into the actual wine production.  If you just love drinking wine, however, opt for the truffle hunt.  You’ll get incredible food and wine, you just won’t get to see how the wine is produced.  Or better yet, just do both.

Once you’ve taken in and enjoyed the incredible Italian cuisine, my final recommendation is visiting the nearby ancient hilltop towns.  Some are small, some are somewhat larger, but all are different and have different things to offer.  The thing they all have in common, however, is that the majority are unspoiled by tourists.  If you want to experience Italy and feel Italian, this is how you do it.  Whether it’s stopping by a tiny café, a quaint shop or a family-run restaurant, there’s simply not a better way to feel the true essence of Italy.

The Terrace has stunning views across the hills and valley and on a clear day the nearest ski mountain Monte Amiata can be seen.

One of Palazzo Terranova’s numerous outdoor seating areas

Palazzo Terranova Special Events & Guest Houses

Although my time at Palazzo Terranova was purely for relaxation purposes, it’s easy to imagine a wide variety of scenarios the Palazzo would be perfect for.  A destination wedding, of course, would be magical in the Umbrian hills.  A corporate retreat, anniversary party, birthday – there’s really nothing you couldn’t execute beautifully at Palazzo Terranova.  Outside, there’s a variety of areas to host larger dinners; inside notes an intimate bar and dining room; and off the wine cellar is a solarium like dining area perfect for a candle-lit dinner.

In addition to the main home, it’s also important to note that Palazzo Terranova boasts two additional homes – one on its grounds, and one next door.  The larger of the two is a restored country house named Colonnata, which is really a magnificent home in its own right.  Available for rental independent or with the Palazzo, Colonnata is a more causal alternative to the formal, luxurious feel of the Palazzo, and boasts 4 bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms, a kitchen, living and dining areas.  There’s also a pool and outdoor dining area that allows to you enjoy the stunning Umbrian landscape.

The second home (known as La Palazzina) is a smaller restored farmhouse on the grounds of Palazzo Terranova noting two bedrooms, living and dining areas and a kitchen.  For events that require privacy during a portion of the festivities, such as a bride and groom preparing for their wedding, La Palazzina is the perfect companion to Palazzo Terranova, as despite its close proximity, still offers a unique separation and privacy.

Ultimately, no matter what the event is, if you’re looking for a luxurious, intimate place to host your private event, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a place better capable of doing so than Palazzo Terranova, as the homes, grounds and service are all world-class.

Palazzo Terranova Conclusion

Of every place in the world I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, it’s difficult to pick one more alluring than Palazzo Terranova.  It’s a place so magnificent it defies what I previously thought was possible from a destination.  You typically tend to think a tropical island getaway and some secluded beach somewhere as your best chance of cutting ties with the world.  But of every place I’ve visited, including said secluded beaches, I’ve never felt more relaxed and more rejuvenated than I did while at Palazzo Terranova.  It was like the rest of the world just stopped, and for a week, I was at complete peace.

If you want to experience the quintessential Italian feel you’ve heard so much about – incredible food, incredible countryside views, and incredible architecture – you’ll be hard pressed to do better than Palazzo Terranova.  It’s a place that exemplifies everything great you’ve heard about Italy, and it does so absolutely perfectly.

Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo combines incredible luxury in a comfortable, relaxing environment

Four months ago, I set out on a journey that many would deem unfathomable.  I threw caution to the wind, hopped a red eye flight to Rome with my wife and two young children, and spent the next 6 weeks traveling through Europe, mainly by high speed rail, but with an occasional bus, boat and taxi thrown in.  No cars, no pre-advanced travel plans on how to get from one city to the next – only a list of pre-defined places I needed to be on a particular day, and that was it.

Aside from a couple Italian railway strikes that rendered two of my planned train rides inoperable, it went without a hitch.  The total distance travelled:  roughly 2,400 miles (not including the plane rides to/from Europe), with the southernmost point of the journey being the stunning Amalfi Coast in Italy and the journey concluding in the fantastic city of Dublin, Ireland.

It was without question the most epic journey of my life, as it allowed me to see what are unquestionably some of the most gorgeous places on Earth.  And I did it for one very simple purpose:  to give you the most in-depth look at travel destinations eMercedesBenz has ever offered.

In the coming months, I’m going to be detailing where we stayed, what you can expect from each place, and whether or not each destination is right for you.  And because I did it with kids, I’m going to do it both from the perspective of a couple’s vacation and a family vacation.  Hopefully you’ll enjoy the ride as much I did, and along the way you’ll gain some valuable insight as to where to spend your next holiday.

Kicking things off, we’ve got a look at the sensational Hotel Hermitage in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Why should you visit Monaco?

Think of Monaco, and images of gambling and a phenomenal amount of luxury undoubtedly spring to mind.  It’s one of the places recognized the world over for its unapologetic display of wealth, and in truth, it’s an image well deserved.  The architecture is grandiose; the mega yachts are even bigger in person; and Ferrari’s appear to be the most common form of transportation.

With an area of roughly 485 acres and 2.5 miles of shoreline, Monaco is a shining example of how less is more.

But for those visiting, this translates into a remarkably unique vacation experience.  Don’t think of Monaco as imposing or uncomfortable – it’s exactly the opposite.  It’s like stepping into an alternate, utopian universe where everything bad has been eradicated and only luxury remains.  It’s the cleanest place I’ve ever been; the roads are perfect; the crime rate is among the lowest of the world’s developed countries; and the seediness common to gambling in America is nowhere to be found.

What is present, however, is an elegance and coolness equatable to what you’d find in a Bond film.  If you’ve ever dreamt of being Bond, pack a tux and head to the Casino de Monte Carlo – it’s as close as you’ll ever get.  For families, Monaco is one of the safest, cleanest cities in the world, with the added bonus of being situated directly on the Mediterranean.  And for those looking to be pampered, Monaco is home to one of the world’s top 10 spas as well as a host of incredible shopping.

Irregardless of who you are, if you’re looking for a luxurious vacation, you’ll find it in Monaco.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Overview

Understanding hotels in Monte Carlo is a bit like understanding your family unit.  Picking your favorite child is impossible, but knowing that your children are better than everyone else’s is quite easy.

In Monaco, think of the Monte Carlo SMB resort’s four hotels like your family.  While it’s impossible to say that one is the best, know that as a whole, they’re the best Monaco has to offer.

There’s the Hotel de Paris – the grand dame of Monaco whose luxury and exquisite architecture is matched only by its incredibly illustrious history.  There’s the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, a new, more modern and relaxed option with an incredible lagoon area and numerous activities.  There’s Monte Carlo Beach, an intimate hotel dating back to the ’30’s situated directly on the Mediterranean.  And there’s my choice – the Hotel Hermitage – which manages to combine an incredible amount of luxury and a storied history in a genuinely relaxing and comfortable environment.

Pick any and you’ll be happy.

In my case, I picked the Hotel Hermitage because I wanted to experience the luxury Monte Carlo is synonymous with, but in traveling with kids, I wanted a slightly more relaxed environment.  In this respect, the Hotel Hermitage is absolutely perfect.  It’s grand, it’s luxurious, and yet it’s incredibly welcoming and inviting.  For families, it’s absolutely perfect, in that there’s a wealth of family activities and a staff that goes out of there way to make children of all ages feel welcome.

Even if you’re not traveling with your family, however, the Hotel Hermitage still caters to virtually everyone visiting Monaco.  Located directly next to the Hotel de Paris and steps from the Casino de Monte Carlo and fantastic shopping, you’re quite literally in the heart of Monte Carlo.  Many of Monaco’s key attractions are just steps away or easily accessible via the hotel’s shuttle, making it ideally located for virtually anything you want to do.  Inside the Hotel Hermitage are numerous delectable dining and drink options, including Vistamar and the Crystalbar.  And for a bit of pampering, the Hotel Hermitage boasts private access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, highly regarded as one of the top 10 spas in the world.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Rooms & Suites

The Hotel Hermitage is a constantly evolving collection of spaces that manage to seamlessly blend the old and the new.  There’s a total of 280 bedrooms with 20 Suites, 15 Junior Suites and 8 Diamond Suites, all of which are separated into individual wings.  Each wing notes a distinct color style, while as a whole the design is incredibly beautiful and coherent.

In defining the style, the Hotel Hermitage is remarkable, it manages to convey a feeling of incredible grandeur and glamour of the Belle Époque era, but it does so in a way that feels new.  Unlike many other European destinations, where the architecture is beautiful but decaying, the Hotel Hermitage is like stepping into a grand palace whose construction was completed yesterday.  It’s grand and magnificent, but it feels fresh and unblemished.

Complimenting this modernity, the rooms features classic architecture and moldings, but with contemporary touches and art pieces.  During my time at the Hotel Hermitage, I had the pleasure of staying in a Junior Suite with views and balcony overlooking the Marina.  The room was large, even by American standards – a feat even more impressive considering real estate in Monaco is the most expensive in the world.  The bathroom was spa-like, featuring ornate stonework and a large window that again overlooked the marina.  And the style, as is the case with all of the Hotel Hermitage, was a blend of classic and modern – not overly contemporary, but enough to give the room a vibrant, energetic feel.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo for the Family

If you’re traveling with your family, the Hotel Hermitage is impeccable at making your entire family feel incredibly comfortable.  The staff was warm and welcoming, and my kids absolutely adored their time in Monaco.

At the heart of the Hotel Hermitage’s family services is what’s called the V.I.K. program (Very Important Kids).  In short, everything you need for your family and a host of wonderful extras, are all present upon check-in.  There’s a welcome kit, which includes chocolate lollipops, fruit juice and a coloring kit.  In the suites (which I recommend if you’re traveling with children), there’s also a bathrobe and bib for kids up to 3 years old personalized with his or her first name, a Gustav teddy bear, and if you visit in the summer, suncare and other beach accessories.  My kids were in heaven – they loved their Gustav bear, and they adored the chocolate lollipops.  If you’re traveling with kids, in short, everything you need is already in place, down to the bottle warmers and baby food, if you desire.

As for sleeping arrangements, for kids up to 3 years old, a baby cot is installed free of charge, and for ages 3-12, an additional bed is installed free of charge in all Junior Suites and up.  For larger families, you also have the option of adjoining bedrooms for additional space.

Depending on when you visit, there’s a host of activities for kids to enjoy during their visit.  At Christmas, for example, there’s a remarkable holiday event where the one of the Hotel Hermitage’s most beautiful spaces – the salle Belle Époque – first welcomes children for a Christmas tea and activities, and later, for a Christmas Eve dinner.  Kids even get the chance to ride Santa’s horse-drawn carriage around Place du Casino, while at night, Santa slips into the kids’ rooms to leave presents for the guests.

In warmer months (mid-April through mid-October), kids can enjoy numerous water adventures, ranging from the children’s and Olympic-sized pools up to water sports at the private beach (accessible via the Hotel Hermitage’s free shuttle).  In July and August, kids can also take part in the Marmorata Kid’s Club on the private beach (free for kids’ ages 3-8), which offers a wide range of activities run by qualified childcare assistants.

All of this adds up to a hotel that offers not only world-class amenities for adults, but also world-class amenities and services for even the youngest of guests.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Dining

The Hotel Hermitage offers four culinary venues – Le Vistamar, the Crystalbar, the Crystal Terrace, and Le Limún – as well as the stunning Winter Garden with Gustave Eiffel dome, where breakfast is served.

For an absolutely sensational lunch or dinner, the Michelin-starred Le Vistamar is a must visit during your stay at the Hotel Hermitage.  Led by chef Joël Garault, the menu focuses on the ideal of “take a fish, a vegetable, and cook it to perfection.”  And they do so with remarkable precision.  Every dish on the tasting menu was beautifully prepared, elegant, inventive, but never overdone.  The restaurant itself is intimate and cozy, and in warmer months, the views are absolutely sensational, as you can enjoy your dining experience on the terrace overlooking the harbor.  And the service was exceptional.  Not overbearing or stuffy, the service was relaxed and friendly with just the right amount of attentiveness thrown in.

Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Le Vistamar Restaurant Gastronomy

Hands down, my dinner at Le Vistamar ranked as my favorite dinner in Monte Carlo.  Add in the fact that pricing at Le Vistamar was among the most economical of any I visited in Monaco (two course lunch w/ drink €39, 4-course seasonal menu €65, Menu Gourmand autour du produit d’exception €120), and you have yet another reason to make Le Vistamar a must on your Monaco to-do list.

For a less casual fare, be sure to check out the Crystalbar – an intimate lounge perfect for an  aperitif or after dinner liqueur.  My wife and I stopped in before our dinner at Le Vistamar to enjoy a glass of wine, and were greeted to an extensive list of wines (served by the glass), champagnes, liquors and cocktails as well as numerous lighter food options and deserts.  And speaking of wine, wines options change frequently, hand picked by sommeliers from what’s called the Central Cellar – a space of more than 16,000 sq. ft. hewn out in 1874 beneath the Hotel du Paris and Hotel Hermitage that’s now home to some 600,000 bottles.

Another exquisite dining space is the the Crystal Terrace, where you can pick from a selection of cigars or ice cream in addition to the aforementioned drink and food options, all while taking views of the Mediterranean Sea, Port Hercule and the Rock of Monaco.  And for an intimate gathering with you friends, there’s Le Limún.  You can enjoy a light breakfast or lunch, afternoon tea with pastries, or an evening cocktail with amuse-bouches.

Lastly, to get your day in Monaco started off on a delicious path, be sure to enjoy a breakfast in the Winter Garden, which is home to one of the hotel’s most stunning architectural features – the Gustave Eiffel dome (named for the its architect, who also happened to design the Eiffel Tower).  The breakfast is sensational, offering a huge assortment of breakfast offerings and treats, while the Winter Garden’s staff again went out of their way to offer exemplary service throughout our stay – even packing our kids to-go treats for our mornings adventures.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Spa

If you’re visiting Monaco, there’s a very good chance you’re going to enjoy a bit of relaxation and pampering, and there’s no better way to experience this pampering than with a visit to the Thermes Marins de Monte Carlo spa, widely considered to be one of the top 10 spas in the world.  Easily accessible via a private walkway from the Hotel Hermitage, everything you’re looking for in a spa is present at the Thermes Marins, including a seawater pool, 37 treatment booths, a cardio-fitness area and two saunas.

While I typically tend to avoid spas, even I couldn’t resist a visit to Thermes Marins, and it was an incredibly relaxing experience.  The spa centers around the concept of personalized treatments, where you meet with team to determine which treatment is right for you.  I opted for a treatment that included a wrap, rub with scented salts, soak in the whirlpool bath and massage, all centered around the idea of increasing my energy level.  It was a fantastic experience, and I left feeling invigorated and revitalized, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Depending on your needs, there’s a tremendous diversity of programs at the Thermes Marins, whether its specific massages, one of numerous treatments, sports coaching or nutrition analysis.  If your visit to Monaco wouldn’t be complete without a day at the spa, you won’t leave disappointed, as there’s truly something for everyone.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Special Events

Although I didn’t visit the Hotel Hermitage for a special event, it’s easy to see how it would excel for virtually any special event you can think of.  As part of Monte Carlo SBM, the special events team can cater to your specific needs, meaning you can utilize all of their venues in a cohesive plan.  Or you can center your activities in the Hotel Hermitage itself.

Hotel Hermitage Salle Belle Epoque

Hotel Hermitage Salle Belle Epoque

For banquets, cocktail parties, or anything else requiring and absolutely stunning setting, the Salle Belle Époque is unquestionably one of the most beautiful rooms I’ve ever seen.  It is absolutely jaw-dropping, and if you’ve ever dreamed of a fairy tale wedding, you won’t find a more perfect reception spot.  For a more contemporary option, the Salon Eiffel  (completed in 2010) offers seating for up to 500, a fresco by Suzanne Cole, and a huge projector system, if needed.

From there, there’s a variety of smaller spaces that can be utilized for your specific needs, whether you’re looking for an intimate outdoor setting, a private table in Le Vistamar, and much more.

The Hotel Hermitage Monte Carlo Conclusion

As a first time visitor to Monte Carlo and the Hotel Hermitage, I wasn’t sure of what to expect, as luxury can oftentimes be uncomfortably uptight and uninviting.  But after visiting the Hotel Hermitage, I can tell you firsthand that this isn’t the case whatsoever.  The staff was incredibly professional, warm and courteous, the hotel itself was stunning, and as a whole, my entire family thoroughly enjoyed every second of their time in Monte Carlo.

If you’re looking for an incredibly luxurious and yet incredibly comfortable vacation, you’ll find it at the Hotel Hermitage.  It truly is the epitome of what Monaco has to offer.

The Ritz-Carlton Chicago

Towering over Michigan Avenue, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago offers mesmerizing views paired with world-class service and amenities

As a child, people used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up.  Decades later, I still don’t have a definitive answer to that question.  If anything, it’s that I never wanted to be one of any thing.  Don’t get me wrong – I’m exceptionally passionate about life and its various facets.  I love writing.  I love photography.  I love being a husband.  I love being a father.  Honestly, I could go on all day about things that I love.  But to define myself with a single title, I simply can’t do it.  How many times have you met someone, only to be asked what it is you do?  My answer to that queston:  as much as I can.

Attempting to define the Ritz-Carlton Chicago is, in many ways, much the same.  It’s a hotel, to be sure, but to classify it with a single sentiment is a simply impossible task.  It’s everything you could wish for in a hotel, but there are so many more things the Ritz-Carlton Chicago does incredibly well that calling it just a hotel simply isn’t good enough.  If anything, it really should be described as a destination unto itself.  The rooms are gorgeous, the service is completely and utterly world-class, the dining is absolutely superb, the spa is an utter haven of serenity, and the view… the view is one that needs to be immortalized in a painting (if it hasn’t been already).  Putting it simply, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago is quite literally so good, that it’s worth a visit to Chicago, just to experience it.

Location

Situated just steps off North Michigan Avenue, the Ritz-Carlton Chicago is within walking distance of many of Chicago’s key attractions, ranging from the Museum of Contemporary Art (5 minutes) to Navy Pier (15 minutes) to shopping on the Magnificent Mile (just out you door).  The John Hancock Center is your next door neighbor, should you wish to take in the beautiful Chicago view from a higher vantage point, and there’s an abundance of the city’s best dining experiences again all within walking distance.  It’s an ideal location for virtually any reason you’re in Chicago, whether business or leisure, and in event you have a young daughter, it may very well be the best location in the world.  The hotel itself is located atop Water Tower Place, which houses 125 of the city’s best shopping venues.  Most importantly, it’s also home to American Girl Place – the holy grail of destinations for young girls.  Each day, kids can enjoy an afternoon tea or dining at the Cafe, they can pose for the cover of American Girl magazine at the photo studio, they can take their American Girl for a new hair style at the salon, and of course, they can shop.  Putting it simply, it will instantly earn you the title of “world’s greatest dad”, if you haven’t earned it already.  Even without kids, however, the Ritz Chicago’s location is superb – everything is close, accessible and simple to get to.

Entrance

Entering the Ritz-Carlton Chicago from street level, you pass through a small lobby more reminiscent of a private residence than a hotel, and ascend twelve floors to the hotel’s main lobby.  Upon exiting the eleveator, you’re greeted to an incredibly light and open space that serves as the central hub of the Ritz-Carlton.  Directly in front of you is a gorgeously designed fountain framed by a soaring skylight above and a wall of windows behind, allowing copious amounts of sunlight to fill the space.  To your right is the check-in desk and concierge, to your left is the newly opened deca restaurant, and directly ahead, past the fountain, is the intimate deca bar and seating area with a splendid view of the city.  The Ritz-Carlton Chicago isn’t a new hotel – it’s been a staple in the city since the ’70’s – and the lobby reflects a certain character and warmth lacking in many new properties.  Thanks to a newly completed $25 million renovation, however, it doesn’t feel old or outdated, but rather it exudes a classically elegant feel, with a just a hint of modernity.  It’s a lobby perfectly befitting of the city – beautiful, relaxed and welcoming.

Guest Rooms

Guest rooms in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago occupy the 15th through the 30th floors of Water Tower Place, offering a variety of perspectives to take in the gorgeous city.  Moderate guest rooms start at 370 sq. feet, while Executive Suites begin at 560 sq. feet and offer separate bedroom and seating areas.  From there, rooms at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago transcend any others found in city, with a variety of suites ranging in size from 800 to 1,405 sq. feet, each of which offer utterly spectacular views of Chicago and/or Lake Michigan.  And for the truly fortunate, on floors 25 and 26  lies the Presidential Suite – an immaculate, newly-completed two-story suite offering 2,900 sq. feet of living space and an unparalleled view of the lake and Navy Pier.  It’s this abundance and diversity of suites that makes staying at the Ritz-Carlton so enjoyable, as the Ritz-Carlton staff has the rare ability to match you with the specific attributes you’re looking for in a room.

Ritz-Carlton Chicago Hotel Premier One-Bedroom Suite BedroomDuring the three-nights I spent with my wife and infant son at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, I had the great pleasure of residing in the Premier One-Bedroom Suite, a 1,000 sq. foot corner suite on the 30th floor that was, quite literally, jaw-dropping.  Entering the room, a small hallway greets you, giving little indication of what lies in store.  To your right is the bedroom and bathroom area, subsequently followed by the living / dining / work area.  While initially I had no idea what the room or the view would look like, entering the living area for the first time was a nearly surreal experience.  The room is simply beautiful – there’s a dining area with seating for four; a living area with a sofa, two chairs and a large flat screen television; and an office area with a desk the standard business amenities.  The decor is all new, and it exudes a relaxed sophistication more reminiscent of a luxurious private apartment  than a hotel suite.  But as beautiful as the room is, it’s not the decor that captivates you upon entering, it’s the absolutely spectacular view of Lake Michigan that takes your breath away.  Overlooking the lake and Navy Pier, the view from the Ritz-Carlton Chicago has to rank among the best I’ve ever seen – not in Chicago, but in the world.  It’s really that amazing.  The entire space is tremendously bright and open, and the numerous windows around  you allow you to witness in the lake, the Hancock Center, and Lake Shore drive from a variety of different angles.

After taking in the gorgeous views, I made my way to the bedroom and bathroom area, and as was the case with the living area, it feels as though you’re entering the bedroom of a gorgeous private apartment.  The bedroom is exceptionally spacious, with a relaxed, elegant decor that mimics that of the rest of the suite.  It too makes use of the incredible view at its disposal, with another large set of windows that frame perfectly the lake and Navy Pier.  There’s ample closet space, should you be staying for an extended period of time;  the bed is the most comfortable of any I’ve slept in; and there’s another large plasma television for your bedroom entertainment.  With the immaculate view, however, you’ll likely be consumed with looking outside, as opposed to the tv.  Following my tour of the bedroom, I made my way to the bathroom, which offers a unique split design.  Upon entering lies a vanity with dual sinks, framed by beautiful wall frames and patterned wallpaper inlays.  Separated by a pair of doors lies the rest of the bathroom conveniences, including a marble shower and separate soaking tub, and of course, all amenities indicative of a world-class hotel are present as well.

Service

Looking past its ideal location, gorgeous rooms and sensational views, what may be the Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s most endearing feature is the exemplary level of service offered by every member of its staff.  I’ll be completely honest – I’ve never experienced service better than that found at the Ritz Chicago.  It is simply perfect.  The staff has an almost otherworldly sense of making sure every element of your stay is as wonderful as possible, to the point they may employ some form of mind-reading techniques to actually know what you want before you even ask for it.

Case and point:  when making my reservations with the Ritz, I noted only that I’d be traveling with my wife and son, with no special instructions given.  As we travel extensively as a family, we’ve learned to bring our own assortment of baby gear – pack and play, baby wash, etc. – as hotels’ children’s amenities tend to vary quite considerably in terms of safety and quality from one location to another.  So at arrival, we had our usual array of baby gear ready to go.  Upon being greeted by the courteous staff and checking in, our son was delighted to find that the concierge had procured a red wagon full of toys for his enjoyment.  After a round of deliberation, he settled on the tyrannosaurus rex, and we made our way to the room, still fully expecting to engage in our usual round of baby gear deployment.  However, upon entering the room, it was immediately evident that any of the baby items we brought were completely unnecessary.  This was the most child-friendly room I’ve ever witnessed.  In the bedroom, a safe, comfortable crib with fresh linens; a diaper genie, and a baby monitor were all neatly placed.  In the living room, more baby monitors connected you to your sleeping child.  In the bathroom, all baby amenities (baby wash, baby powder, etc.) were present, as was a baby bathtub.  Other than diapers, there wasn’t a single item we needed to bring for our son, all because the Ritz-Carlton staff took the time to assess our specific needs, without us even having to ask.

It’s this immense hospitality and foresight that extended to our entire stay.  While approaching an elevator at one point that was about to close, one of the staff quite literally sprinted to catch the door for my wife.  During another trip on the elevator, we talked briefly with another member of the Ritz-Carlton staff, who upon exiting the elevator, procured a Ritz-Carlton teddy bear for my son that, to this day, he still sleeps with.  While heading out in the morning, another member of the staff offered my wife and I a coffee to go, and subsequently detailed to us the origins of the coffee and why they selected it.  And on another day, a member of the staff informed us there was rain in the forecast and provided us with umbrellas.  Two hours into our day out, it started to rain.  I could go on all day about all the intricacies of the staff and how adept they are at making sure your time there is as fantastic as possible, but the truth is, you really have to experience it for yourself to believe it.  If there’s a flaw in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago’s service, I couldn’t find it – their service is, without question, the best you’ll experience, anywhere.

Dining at deca restaurant + bar

New to the Ritz-Carlton Chicago is the deca restaurant + bar, a brilliant offering from Executive Chef Mark Payne that blends a contemporary, brasserie-inspired cuisine with a beautiful, art deco setting.  Situated directly on the main level of the hotel (floor twelve), deca restaurant + bar encapsulates beautifully the Ritz-Carlton Chicago as a whole.  On the surface, it’s gorgeous, but as you experience it, there’s an underlying warmth and genuineness that makes you feel at home.  If anything, it feels like your favorite neighborhood restaurant – one in which you recognize everything on the menu – but one that’s masterminded by a genius that’s figured out how to take traditional items and infuse them with his own incredible blend of flavors.  Everything simply exudes freshness and flavor.

Ritz-CarltonI started the meal with a Caipiroska, a fantastic blend of Grey Goose, agave nectar, fresh lime and pineapple puree, whereas my wife opted for the Bellini (Prosecco, Lamarca, peach puree and fresh rasberries).  Both were priced at $14; both were delicious.  For the hors d’oeuvres, we settled on two options:  the steamed mussels in white wine and saffron paired with french fries ($15), and a salad of mixed baby greens with a cabernet sauvignon vinaigrette ($9).  The mussels were enough for two – perfectly prepared, with just the right amount of saffron – while the french fries offered copious amounts of flavor and matched the mussels perfectly.  The salad was what all salads should be:  fresh, light, and an ideal blend of sweetness and acidity.  As for our main entrees, my wife opted for grilled lamb cutlets with heirloom tomatoes and summer beans in a tarragon jus ($23); whereas I opted for the fresh seafood and shellfish tower comprised of poached shrimp, oysters, crab legs, scallop ceviche, manila clams, steamed mussels, periwinkles and lobster, all served with mignonette, cocktail sauce, tarragon rémoulade and Aïoli ($32 / person).  As one of the main entrees pictured featured on the deca website, I had to try the seafood tower, and it was, for all intensive purposes, a seafood feast, but for the first time that night, I regretted my decision.  Not because there was anything wrong with the seafood – it was a fresh, delicious blend of mollusks and shellfish.  Instead, I regretted the fact I didn’t get to partake in another of Chef Payne’s fantastic creations.   I sampled my wife’s perfectly grilled lamb and the gorgeous tarragon jus, and the cold seafood just couldn’t compete with the beauty of her dish.  Further sealing my remorse for what I had ordered, our incredibly affable waiter was kind enough to bring us a sampling of pan seared sea scallops that were on special for the night, and after tasting one bite of the beautifully caramelized scallop that quite literally melted in my mouth, I realized that to truly appreciate deca, you have to experience Chef Payne’s more complex dishes.  He is simply a master of his craft.  Completing the night, the ten layer chocolate deca-dent cake and a French Apple Tart with puff pastry and caramel ice cream were our final two selections ($7 each).  Both were wondrous finishes to an incredible dining experience, and well worth the few extra calories they contained.

Was I impressed with deca restaurant + bar?  Absolutely.  The next night, I visited Fronterra Grill – the critically acclaimed Mexican restaurant of chef Rick Bayless – and I can say with definitive certainty that I greatly preferred my meal at deca.  And this is coming from someone that adores Mexican food, on a night when Bayless was in the kitchen.  The fact is, deca is a perfect marriage of beautiful flavors and incredibly fresh ingredients, and the fact it’s so affordable is simply icing on the cake.  It’s the perfect compliment to the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, and a dining experience that you absolutely must experience – both for those residing at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago and Chicago natives alike.

Spa

Completing their incredible offering of services and amenities for guests, The Carlton Club in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago offers a tremendous assortment of services aimed at restoring your natural vitality and well-being.  As with every other facet of the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, the spa services are utterly world class.  If you’re in the mood for a massage, there’s a total of nine options, including healing stone therapy, Punta Mita, herbal infusion, deep tissue and their signature aromatherapy offerings.  Once you’ve had your stresses kneaded out of you, it’s only logical to pamper yourself with a facial.  There’s a total of six different facial treatments including the Gold Coast rose quartz treatment, the Carlton Club signature treatment, the perfect radiance treatment and the men’s executive treatment, all of which will leave you cleansed, refreshed and glowing.  And then there’s the body treatments and envelopments.  Select services include the Four Seasons in One Signature Treatment, which includes a cooling scrub, a floral wrap, a medley of massages and a scalp treatment; the aroma flow body envelopment, which is a body wrap aimed at increasing circulation and leaving you energized; and the aroma tonic body envelopment, which features a rich cream mask full of hydrating, firming and anti-wrinkle agents that leave your skin smooth and toned.

For even more indulgence, you can also opt for one of three treatment packages, starting with the Four Seasons deluxe pamper.  It begins with a 25-minute firming body polish to soften and tone your skin, followed by a 55-minute Swedish or deep tissue massage, and concludes with a 25-minute foot massage.  The second treatment package is the warming heart journey, and starts with a 90-minute ultimate rose manicure and pedicure with pure essential oils of Moroccan rose and patchouli.  Next, an 85-minute Gold Coast rose quartz facial follows, with active anti-ageing ingredients stimulating the skin and regenerating your cells, giving you a refined and glowing appearance.  And finally, you can also opt for the perfect balance collection treatment package, which features a relaxing 85-minute herbal infusion massage designed to stimulate circulation and restore the body’s well-being; a 25-minute mini-facial; and a 30-minute classic relaxing manicure.

In addition to the aforementioned services, there’s also a variety of services for teens, specialized treatments for your hands and feet, and a selection of in-room offerings.  In all probability, if there’s a specific treatment you’re seeking, you’ll find it at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago Spa.  Their services are incredibly diverse, and every one that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing have been fantastic.

Final Thoughts

I truly can’t say enough good things about the Ritz-Carlton Chicago – it’s one of those rare places where everything comes together perfectly to create a destination that is absolutely remarkable.  I’ve had the pleasure of residing in Chicago more times than I can count, but my time at the Ritz-Carlton gave me a perspective of the city that until then I had never had the opportunity to experience.  It’s an incredible destination that simply does everything well.  Whether you’re visiting with your family, for business or for leisure,  all I can say is that if you choose the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, you won’t for a second regret it.  It is, in a single word, amazing.

Four Seasons Hotel New York

When staying in NYC, the Four Seasons Hotel New York is among the finest luxury destinations you can reside in

Attempting to describe New York City is like attempting to describe a diamond with a thousand different facets.  It’s a centrifuge of energy, spinning at a pace so fast it’s almost dizzying the first time you set foot on its historic grounds.  It’s gritty, but when traversing its various pathways and corridors, there’s beauty to be found on nearly every street corner.  Most of all, it’s a city that epitomizes America.  It symbolizes freedom; it symbolizes diversity; it symbolizes everything that makes America great.  And it’s a city that  as an American, you unequivocally must visit on at least a semi-regular basis.  Last week I had to the opportunity to return to New York City to attend the New York International Auto Show, and while there, I also had the pleasure of residing in one of its premier hotels:  the Four Seasons Hotel New York.

To be honest, calling the Four Seasons Hotel New York a hotel seems unfair.  Yes, by standard definition the Four Seasons is a hotel, but after spending three nights amidst its towering limestone confines and partaking in its extraordinary level of amenities and service, I can tell you that grouping the Four Seasons Hotel New York in with every other New York City hotel is, if anything, an injustice.  If you’re not feeling ambitious enough to read my entire review, I’ll put it as simply as possible:  when visiting New York City, the Four Seasons is among the finest destinations you can reside in.  I won’t waste your time telling you it’s the best, or the finest, or the most luxurious, simply for the fact that every individual has their own ideals of what luxury and design should be; but I will tell you that in the event you do stay here, irrespective of your personal style and preferences, you will not for a second regret your decision.

Superbly located just off Central Park between Park and Madison Avenues, the Four Seasons Hotel New York is a towering monument to renowned architect I.M. Pei – the individual best known for his work creating the Louvre’s infamous glass pyramid.  Rising 52 stories above the Manhattan skyline, the Four Seasons is the city’s tallest hotel, and yet despite its impressive stature, the hotel’s post-modernist contempary design is characterized by a certain level of subtlety, if you will.  It’s not the Trump Tower, adorned in a glistening gold facade, begging you to pay attention to it.  It’s a far more self-confident design – one that rests gracefully amidst its surroundings while still offering a meticulous level of detail upon closer inspection.

Entrance

Entering the Four Seasons New York, you’re immediately transported from the intensity of the city to a grand yet welcoming limestone and marble-clad lobby.  Look up, and you’ll witness a gorgeous 33-foot high backlit onyx ceiling.  To your right lies the newly opened Garden Restaurant and Wine Bar (I’ll come back to your dining options in a moment), while to your left is TY, a relaxed seating area that offers hors d’oeuvres and a varied selection of aperitifs, spirits and champagne.  It is by all accounts a majestic entrance, but for every part of its splendor it offers an equal part warmth.  At no point does the hotel feel uninviting or unapproachable, but rather it manages to stay supremely comfortable amidst its grandeur.

Guest Rooms

Ascend the elevators to one of the 368 guest rooms, and you’ll immediately discover one of the Four Seasons New York’s trademark attributes – rooms, on average, boast 600 square feet of living space (approximately 400 sq. ft. for the sleeping area, 120 sq. ft. for the bathroom and 100 sq. ft. for the dressing area).  By any standards, the rooms are spacious, but by New York City standards, the rooms are apartments unto themselves.  Complimenting their size, the rooms feature a very precise assortment of amenities to ensure your every need is met.  It sounds cliché, but every element of the Four Seasons has been carefully planned to be as functional and accomodating as possible.  There’s the standard luxury items:  plasma television, office desk, private bar, etc., all of which one comes to expect from a luxury hotel.  But what’s unique about the Four Seasons New York is the meticulous detail they pay to each distinct item.  There’s a oversized soaking tub, but more importantly, it fills in a brisk 60 seconds.  There’s window shades to provide privacy from the outside world, but they’re electrically operated, allowing you to easily block the morning sun (or invite it in) from bed with the press of a button.  There’s a pillow menu, ensuring you have the optimum level of support under your head as you sleep.  Newspapers are neatly delivered each morning in a branded Four Seasons tote hanging from your door.  To be honest, I could probably devote an entire article detailing each of the amenities found in the Four Seasons New York and the thoughtful planning that went into each, but at the risk of sounding like an overzealous time-share salesman, I won’t.

Service

Paired with the amenities, the level of service is equally superlative.  The room service staff is exemplary, taking care that each element of your room is exactly as it should be.  Shampoo, conditioner and soap aren’t just refilled, they’re perfectly centered in the shower tray.  At night, slippers and floor mats appear bedside as part of the turndown service, while the leather encased television channel guide is placed neatly next to the bed on the night stand’s pull-out tray.  And what may be most impressive, the staff excels at understanding your individual needs.  Traveling with my wife and infant son, we returned to our room after a day out on the town to find an assortment of children’s items – baby shampoo, body wash, lotion, etc. – situated neatly in the bathroom, not at our request, but rather based on the staff’s observation we were visiting with a child.  It’s a level of professionalism that extends throughout the staff of the hotel.  Need ice?  Press a button, and it’s delievered within minutes.  Forget to pack your umbrella?  The bellman will provide one for you (along with the day’s forecast).  Need a ride to a nearby restaurant?  Complimentary car drop off is included within a two mile radius.  Every element of the service is thought-out, carefully planned and executed beautifully.

Dining at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon

When dining at the Four Seasons Hotel New York, there’s a variety of options (6 total) to choose from.  The hotel’s flagship restaurant is L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, a uniquely intimate take on casual dining that offers seating for only 46 guests (20 of which are at the restaurant’s pearwood counter, offering superb views of the open kitchen).  Blending a variety of French-inspired selections with Asian and Mediterranean influences, such as Robuchon’s famous pommes purée truffée (truffled mashed potatoes) and the caille farcie de foie gras et caramélisée (free-range quail stuffed with foie gras), L’Atelier has quickly established itself as one of the city’s preeminent dining establishments. L’Atelier’s accolades include a three star rating by the New York Times, being named “Best New Restaurant of the Year” in 2007 by the James Beard Foundation and holding a top ten ranking in the Zagat Survey.

Dining at The Garden Restaurant and Wine Bar

New to the Four Seasons Hotel New York, The Garden Restaurant and Wine Bar is described as an enchanted forest in the heart of New York City.  Adorned by four 20 foot African Acacia trees, The Garden offers superb breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch services, with an emphasis on popular American cuisine:  eggs Benedict and omelettes at breakfast and brunch; salads, pasta, chicken and steak at lunch.  At night, however, is when The Garden comes to life, transforming itself into a vibrant wine bar.  Bronze hardwood flooring, a 15 foot high black lacquered wine display and hundreds of flowers form the perfect canvas on which to enjoy a sophisticated, supremely intimate night out on the town.  Over 700 bottles of wine are available to choose from (150 of which are available by the glass), as are extensive cheese and chocolate tastings and an exemplary charcuterie menu.  My wife and I both loved The Garden, and if you’re staying at the Four Seasons or if you’re just in the area, we both highly recommend visiting, as it really is an exquisite setting.

Four Seasons Hotel New York Ty Warner Penthouse Living Room View of New York City Skyline

Four Seasons Hotel New York Ty Warner Penthouse Living Room View of New York City Skyline

Ty Warner Penthouse

Despite everything I’ve told you about the Four Seasons Hotel New York, there is still a defining attribute that I’ve failed to mention – the Ty Warner Penthouse.  Named for the hotel’s owner, Ty Warner (the elusive CEO of Ty, Inc., creator of the Beanie Baby and real estate magnate), the Ty Warner Penthouse encompasses the entire 52nd floor of the Four Seasons New York.  Commissioned by its namesake and designed by I.M. Pei, the Ty Warner Penthouse is a nine room, 4,300 square foot living work of art – one that took 6 years and an estimated $50 million to complete.  With a price tag of $35,000 per night, it’s also the most expensive suite in the world.

Before I go any further, I have to tell you:  while visiting the Four Seasons, I contacted the hotel requesting a tour for the sake of this article.  They were gracious enough to grant me my wish, and they were even more gracious to allow me the opportunity to set foot on the hallowed ground of the Ty Warner Penthouse in person.  In other words, the following, as does everything else in this article, depicts actual events.

Ascending to the top of the Four Seasons is an experience unto itself.  It’s as if the elevator knows it’s rising to special heights, and it knows its job is to get you there as quickly as possible.  By the time we passed the 40th floor, sounds reminiscent of a Vegas slot machine were echoing in my head as the floors raced by in such rapid succession.  And then as quickly as it began, it’s over.  The doors open, and suddenly you’re in a place that is as close to floating on a cloud as one could conceivably get.  There’s huge, 25 foot cathedral ceilings with floor to ceiling windows in each of the penthouse’s three main areas, letting in so much light that it feels, quite literally, like you’re flying.  The view is indescribable – there’s simply no way of characterizing it.  Slowly, you become acclimated to the fact that virtually all of Manhattan is at your feet; your senses start to return; and you begin to notice the details of your surroundings.

Everywhere you look, on every surface, there are elements reminding you of the craftsmanship that went into creating this extraordinary space.  In the living and dining rooms, cream walls are inlaid with thousands of pieces of mother of pearl.  In the bedroom, the walls are covered in straw marquetry, a tedious process where thin pieces of straw are assembled in a perfectly smooth pattern.  Think of it as a wood floor, perfectly flush with no seams, where each piece of straw is less than an inch thick.  It adorns every wall of the master bedroom, and it took over a year to construct.  In the powder room the semi-precious stone “Tiger-Eye” adorns the walls and sink top.  In no sense does this feel like a hotel suite – my beautiful tour guide described it as a billionaire’s apartment, and it’s a completely accurate description.

Moving through the penthouse, you encounter three main areas.  The first is the living area, an airy, primarily cream colored room that offers gorgeous western views of the Manhattan landscape.  There’s a variety of seating options – a chocolate three seat sofa, two champagne-colored silk loveseats and two club chairs with hand carved legs are the center pieces –  along with a dining room table that offers what’s undoubtedly one of the most romantic dining experiences in the city.  Also present is a 3 1/2 by 3 foot working fireplace – one that I’m told was carved out of a solid block of chiampo mandorlato stone imported from Italy.  Next is the library, where a Bosendorfer Grand Piano sits quietly, framed by a southern view of the city.  Walls are covered in a rich caramel colored French lacquer; two 12 foot tall book cases with translucent amber onyx shelving and a vine motif house various literary works; and a second seating area – this time a dark brown calf skin sofa, a beige loveseat and dark brown leather ebony chairs – offer an additional area of respite to escape the stresses of the city.  The last of the three primary areas is the master bedroom, draped in the straw marquetry I told you about earlier and offering stunning northern views of Central Park.  The centerpiece of the room is a Thai canopy bed – one that features a Syrian inspired hand woven cream gold bed curtain and a Swedish Hästens Vividus mattress that took 160 hours to complete (no, I didn’t try it nor can I attest to its comfort).  Sitting directly under the soaring floor to ceiling windows, a light caramel color lacquered desk with arched legs allows the penthouse’s occupant to put the finishing touches on his or her $500 billion corporate merger, while a silk bordeaux art deco chaise lounge and two silk burnt orange round chairs offer the master bedroom’s final seating options.

It’s a supremely beautiful space, and one whose views alone justify both it’s construction cost and nightly rate.  Add to that complimentary use of every one of the Four Season New York’s numerous services, including a chauffeured Maybach and Rolls Royce, and the Ty Warner Penthouse starts looking like a bargain (almost).  But after everything I’ve told you, what may be the Ty Warner Penthouse’s most endearing trait is that despite the mother-of-pearl inlays and despite the intricate straw marquetry and despite every other precious material found throughout its 4,300 square feet, at no point is there a feeling of uneasiness as though you’re treading on something you shouldn’t be – it’s a superbly comfortable space and one that you or I could move into tomorrow and feel completely at ease.

It’s a characteristic that speaks testaments to the Four Seasons New York as a whole.  Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, there’s a beauty and a precision to the Four Seasons – never ostentatious – and one that makes you feel completely at ease the moment you enter.  I said it at the beginning of the article and I have to again echo the same sentiment:  when visiting New York City, the Four Seasons is among the finest destinations you can reside in.  It manages to find the perfect balance between a distinguished grace and a welcoming comfort, and if you do stay here, I can assure you – you will not for a second regret it.

When you go, here are a few tips from personal experience that will help make your stay even more enjoyable:

  • When dining at the Four Seasons Hotel New York, talk to the concierge as early as possible about making reservations.  Part of the restaurant’s intimacy comes from the limited seating areas, so reservations are highly recommended.
  • When selecting a guest room, about 50 percent offer views of Central Park.  If views are of importance to you, be sure to specify your preferences when making a reservation.
  • When traveling with children, the Four Seasons Hotel New York offers a variety of services that will save you from having to pack your entire kid’s room.  Cribs, bottle warmers, baby shampoo, body wash, lotions, etc., are all available upon request, as are child care services with advanced notice (hourly fees apply).
  • For easier access when traveling with a stroller or for those with disabilities, there’s a secondary entrance on 58th Street that has multiple full sized elevators.  The grand lobby does has an elevator as well, but it’s much smaller and slower to use than the 58th Street entrance.
  • Although hidden on one of the Four  Season New York’s sub-levels, there is a 24-hour Fitness Center featuring a variety of cardio and weight training machines for guests, along with complimentary juice, fruit and various spa services (steam room, sauna, etc.)
  • If you’re thinking about booking the Ty Warner Penthouse, we have to warn you:  the $35,000 price tag is firm.  There are no discounts and no exceptions.  Also, if you’re thinking about booking it for a photo shoot, it’s not going to happen.  Reservations are restricted purely to individuals booking the penthouse for personal use.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin

Luxurious and inviting, the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is the perfect way to see Dublin and the surrounding countryside

When you think about visiting Europe, there tends to be a few select cities that garner the most attention. You know the ones – Paris, Rome, so on and so forth. They’re incredible cities – beautiful, grand, with profuse amounts of history and architecture.

But as much as I adore them, there’s an unfortunate side effect to their fame – the overwhelming sense that the entire world has converged into a single location.  Saying there are tourists everywhere is an understatement.  Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying you can’t escape the hoards of people and enjoy these cities on a more intimate level, because you absolutely can.  But for first time visitors or anyone in the mood to take in the most common tourist sites (think Eiffel Tower, Coliseum, etc.), you’re going to wait.  And wait.  And wait.

For those of you wishing to visit Europe and yet escape from legions of other tourists, may I suggest Dublin.  It’s a city that boasts an exemplary blend of European history and architecture; it’s home to a wealth of modern activities and shopping; and if you venture just outside Dublin, it notes absolutely breathtaking sea and country views as well as a host of outdoor activities.

Why should you visit Dublin?

There are many reasons to visit Dublin, but the first and unquestionably best reason is a very simple one:  the people.  The Irish are a fantastic lot – jovial, welcoming, and incredibly proud of their country.  As such, they go out of their way to make you feel welcome.  I lost track of how many strangers we met on the street that upon finding out we were foreigners, immediately proceeded to give us lengthy recommendation lists of must-visit places and things to do.  It’s a place that you can visit and although a tourist, feel immediately at home.

Grafton Street Dublin, Ireland

As for actual activities to do, the list is enormous.   Obviously there’s the pubs.  And there are many.  Unlike American pubs, however, Irish pubs are key components of everyday life.  Traveling with kids?  Not a problem.  The first pub we stopped in actually had a soft serve machine where the kids could make up their own cones.  Want to go shopping?  Check out Grafton Street, home to a huge assortment of shops and dining options.  In the mood for some history and architecture?  There are numerous castles; stunning examples of Georgian architecture; and the Book of Kells (housed at Trinity College), an illuminated manuscript dating back to 800 AD.

Venture just outside of Dublin, and the list grows even more.  In visiting Ireland, it was imperative for me to find great seafood, so upon the recommendation of numerous strangers I took a quick trip to Howth, a quaint fishing village located just outside Dublin.  While there I enjoyed a meal at The Oar House Fish Restaurant, and it was sensational.  The Dublin Bay prawns were the best I’ve eaten, fresh off the boat (which you can see just outside the Oar House’s front door) and quite literally melting in your mouth as you ate them.  I also took a trip down to Wicklow, known as the “Garden of Ireland”, and home to some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.  There’s an abundance of stunning views, but also an abundance of outdoor activities to partake in (golf, biking, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, etc.).

For me, it was these excursions that defined my time in Ireland.  If you want a modern getaway with shopping, a trip to the zoo or a visit to the spa, it’s all here.  Want to get outside and enjoy a huge range of outdoor activities?  Done.  Or maybe you’re looking for an intimate vacation with lush green countryside, stunning sea and cliff views and cozy dining spots – you’ve got it.  There’s simply such a huge abundance of things to do it’s impossible to fit them all in a single visit.

Thankfully, planning your visit to Ireland is actually quite easy, thanks to the Irish tourism board.  Their website VisitDublin.com makes it incredibly easy to see an overview of the numerous things to do and see in the city of Dublin (and surrounding Dublin County).  Better yet, walk down the street, ask someone for a recommendation, and prepare to be bombarded with more recommendations than you can fit into a week.  I love Dublin, and there’s no question I’ll be returning to see the huge amount of things I missed my first time around.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Overview

To paraphrase Roy Rogers, I’ve never met a Four Seasons I didn’t like, and the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is no exception to the rule.  Comfortable elegance is how I would describe the Four Seasons Dublin – a handsome, superbly relaxed environment nestled roughly 5 minutes outside the center of Dublin.  It’s actually in an ivy-covered residential neighborhood known as Ballsbridge, which is fitting, as the hotel notes a luxuriously residential feel.

The lobby and lounge areas – recently the recipient of a new makeover – are simply beautiful, with a perfect balance of classic and modern styling harmoniously blending as one.  An absolute must, especially with kids, is partaking in an afternoon tea in the lounge.  There’s a diverse and delicious tea menu to choose from, along with a host of sweet treats and light dining options for you and your kids to enjoy.  The Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is also the only hotel in Dublin boasting a full service spa, an ideal way to get a bit of pampering in during your stay.

When you visit Dublin, the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is simply the perfect place to reside.  It’s luxurious, it’s comfortable, it’s inviting, and it’s perfectly located for trips into the city center or excursions to the coast and country.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Rooms & Suites

The Four Seasons Hotel Dublin notes a total of 197 guest rooms and suites, with my personal choice being the Family Suite.  At 915 sq. feet, the room was incredibly spacious and bigger than many New York City apartments – a much welcomed feature when you’re traveling with two children.  The style was understatedly elegant, and in keeping with the hotel’s style as a whole, felt very warm and comfortable, with a distinctly residential feel.

As is synonymous with the Four Seasons family, the amenities were world-class.  Down duvets and pillows, terry bathrobes, a marble bathroom with deep soaking tub and separate glass shower – everything you’d expect from a five star hotel is here.  Everything you need for your kids is also on hand, including a crib, kids’ toiletries, bathrobes, and a welcome gift.

When traveling with children, there’s nothing better than being able to check-in to a hotel and having the room pre-tailored to your needs, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in the Four Seasons Dublin.  Simply make a note of your kids when reserving your room, and when you arrive, all of the kids amenities will be in place, waiting for you, meaning you can relax from the moment you check in.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin for the Family

I’ve had the great pleasure of traveling to a variety of unique and interesting destinations with my wife and two children – enough so that those close to me question my sanity for even attempting to embark on some of my ventures.  Dublin, however, is a stark departure from many of the less-than-friendly kid places I’ve been, offering a sublime selection of things to do and see for kids of all ages.

It’s a sentiment that begins from the moment you arrive.  Upon check-in, kids are welcomed with their own check-in, room key and special surprise.  In the room, dedicated kids’ amenities offer up a bit of luxurious pampering, including toiletries and their own bath robes.  And from there, the fun is just beginning.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is the perfect base for a family thanks to it's outstanding Concierge and staff that go out of our way to make guests of all ages feel welcome

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin welcomes guests of all ages

One of the highlights, and an absolute must during your stay, is a visit to the Four Season Hotel Dublin’s lounge for an afternoon tea and snack.  The list of teas available is huge, with a variety of exotic and irresistible flavors (not only for the kids but for you as well).  I recommend sampling at least a few varieties, as all the ones we indulged in were fantastic.  While you’re there, be sure to order a snack as well.  For kids and sweet lovers, there’s a delectable pasty tower, offering a vast array of sugary delicacies.  Or for something a bit more substantial, there’s a variety of tea sandwiches, including sliced duck with pickled onions and artichoke crisps on a grilled baguette and smoked Irish salmon with horseradish cream and caviar on a potato rosti.

Venture outside the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin, and the amount of family activities is absolutely sensational.  In the city, be sure to stop by Phoenix Park and Dublin Zoo, a 70 acre sanctuary that’s home to some 600 animals.  Another great option for kids is the Imaginosity Children’s Museum (for ages 9 and under), where your little ones can take part in a variety of workshops and fun activities throughout the day.  And for the crafty, there’s numerous options to make and/or paint your own pottery.  We managed to fit all three in, and my kids adored them all.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Ireland Black Castle in Wicklow County

Black Castle in Wicklow County

Outside of the city, I recommend venturing into the world of knights and princesses by exploring at least one of the area’s numerous castles.  Another option might be a trip to the beach to enjoy family picnic, which by all accounts makes for a perfect afternoon.  Talk to the very knowledgable and helpful concierge, and they can arrange a special picnic basket to take on your adventures.  Lastly, no visit to Ireland would be complete without a trip to the country.  My recommendation, rent a car and take drive through Wicklow.  The views can only be described as breathtaking, and there are numerous historic sites your kids will love exploring along the way.

Looking back on our visit to Dublin, my family and I had a fantastic time, with our only regret being that we didn’t have more time to spend in Ireland.  It’s incredibly family oriented and is the ideal destination for kids of all ages and interests.  It is without question a must-visit destination for anyone planning a European vacation.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Dining

Dining at the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin consists of four options – the Seasons restaurant, the Lobby Lounge, The Bar and ICE lounge.  For a more traditional meal, the Seasons restaurant offers what’s described as a contemporary Irish cuisine, serving a variety of fresh, local ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I enjoyed several breakfasts as well as a dinner at the Seasons, and the food was perfectly in harmony with the hotel as a whole.  It was balanced, not excessively complicated and delicious.  I had the dry-aged Irish beef, my wife the lamb, and both were brilliant.  The key to great food is freshness, and the Seasons restaurant capitalizes on this ideal perfectly by sourcing locally grown and produced ingredients.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Ireland Ice Bar

For lighter fare, as already noted, the Lobby Lounge offers a variety of tea sandwiches, pastries, and numerous tea and beverage options.  And for a relaxing night out, The Bar and ICE lounge both offer extensive drink options, including a wide assortment of Irish whiskeys.

Four Seasons Hotel Dublin Conclusion

Ultimately, my time at the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin was a splendid one.  Dublin is a city whose people are among the warmest I’ve met; the hotel itself and the staff were all sensational, and the amount of things to do and see in Dublin far surpassed the three days I had to spend there.  Although it’s not the most common city one thinks of when embarking on a European vacation, I can’t recommend enough taking the time to see Ireland for yourself, whether it’s for the history, the stunning landscapes, or the modern touches.  It’s a way to experience Europe in a completely relaxed, welcoming environment, and the Four Seasons Hotel Dublin is the perfect place to begin your Irish adventures.

Sea Island

Located on Georgia's beautiful Atlantic coast, Sea Island ranks as one of the most stunning destinations in the world

As winter stretches its icy grip across much of the country, there’s no better time to take a break from your daily routines and venture to other more exotic destinations.  January through April is easily my favorite time of the year to travel – in January and February to escape the cold, and in March and April to take in spring from a new perspective.  Over the past year we’ve searched out some of the top places in the world to visit, both here and abroad, and in the coming months we’re going to be sharing some of our favorites for those looking to get away and experience something new.

Kicking things off, we have a place that completely defies convention – not by breaking tradition, but rather by keeping it.  A place that since its inception more than 80 years ago, has taken the idea of a hotel and resort, re-imagined it in a way that’s more grand and magnificent than what you may think is possible,  and yet still manages to stay rooted in what made (and continues to make) it great.  That place is Sea Island.

Sea Island Overview

Located in Georgia on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, Sea Island was founded in 1928 under a simple premise:  create a “friendly little inn” on the southern coast.  Today, Sea Island’s core attribute of southern hospitality remains fully intact, but it has far superseded the attributes of being either little or an inn.  Instead, Sea Island has been transformed into what may very well be the most opulent destination in the South – an expansive retreat that not only offers nearly every amenity and activity one could wish for, but one that does so with a precision that borders on perfection.  There simply isn’t anyone who will visit Sea Island that will leave without realizing what a truly special place it is.

Sea Island Cloister Aerial Overview

The Cloister at Sea Island

As a hotel, Sea Island is flawless.  The Cloister – the centerpiece of Sea Island’s accommodations – is a stunning Mediterranean masterpiece crafted in classic Addison Mizner style.  The rooms are exemplary, with each noting a classic, sophisticated and supremely comfortable design.  Antique furnishings, handmade Turkish rugs and intricate millwork are just some of the things that give warmth and character to the rooms, complimented by a spaciousness larger than most NYC apartments.  Adding to the beauty of the rooms, the Cloister as a whole is simply magnificent, feeling less like a hotel and more like an extraordinary private residence.  Every room, every corridor and every space has something to offer or a unique story to tell.  It may be the inviting, intricately paneled library stocked with thousands of books for your reading enjoyment.  It may be the Spanish Lounge, which can trace its roots back to Addison Mizner’s original Cloister built in 1928.  Or it may be a wall of photographs showing the numerous Presidents and world leaders that have resided on Sea Island.  Everywhere you journey in the Cloister, in every space you enter, you’re reminded of what a truly remarkable place this is.

But the Cloister is only a small part of Sea Island.  From there, the amount of amenities and activities at your disposal are truly staggering.  For golfers, Sea Island boasts not only three championship courses, but also the nation’s top golf learning center, with four of Golf Digest’s top 50 golf teachers on staff.  It’s also home to the Lodge, an intimate AAA Five-Diamond rated hotel that doubles as the clubhouse for Sea Island, complete with a sprawling 10,000 locker room with every amenity imaginable.  For those wishing to relax and rejuvenate, Sea Island is home to a Forbes Five-Star 65,000 square-foot spa and fitness center.  For those seeking a delicious Southern culinary experience, Sea Island is home to the Georgian Room – a Forbes Five-Star rated restaurant featuring a refined Southern cuisine – as well as four other main restaurants (and several other dining options as well).  And for families, Sea Island is one of the most family friendly places I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. There’s an incredible amount of activities and programs for both families and kids of all ages, including Camp Cloister (which teaches kids about Sea Island, science, nature, etc.), cookie making, movies at the Beach Club Movie Theater, shelling excursions, bingo and much more.  There are so many activities at Sea Island, in fact, that there’s actually a daily menu of activities you’ll receive during your stay, to help you plan how to make the most of your time.  And believe me, when you see the amount of activities available, you’ll understand why.

Describing everything offered by Sea Island in a few paragraphs is an impossible feat, but describing Sea Island as whole can be summarized quite simply:  it doesn’t matter who you are or what your age is, Sea Island is truly remarkable in that it offers something for everyone, and it does so better than anyone else.  I’ve never experienced another destination like it, and if you’re short on time and questioning whether or not I recommend it, my answer is simple:  I truly can’t recommend it highly enough.  As I’m about to detail, Sea Island will forever change the way you look at your travels.  It’s one of those special places that sets the benchmark by which all future destinations will be judged, and as you’ll come to learn, it sets the bar very, very high.

Sea Island History

Sea Island Cloister Resort

The Summit Room at Sea Island

When a place has a past as illustrious as that of Sea Island, it’s only fitting to begin with a brief history lesson to best understand what makes Sea Island so special.  The story of Sea Island begins in 1926, when automobile magnate Howard Coffin (co-founder of Hudson Motor Car Company), enamored with the beauty of the area, purchased what was then known as Long Island – a barrier island bordering St. Simons island.  Initially, Long Island was renamed Glynn Isle by Coffin, which would eventually give way to the name Sea Island in the coming years.  In addition to his purchase of Sea Island, Coffin also purchased multiple large tracts of land on neighboring St. Simons Island itself.  Coffin, who was already the owner and resident of nearby Sapelo Island, recognized the potential the area held as a resort destination, and subsequently formed the Sea Island Company to begin development of the area.

Over the next two years, Sea Island would begin taking shape, first with the completion of a 9-hole golf course by golf professional Walter Travis at the Sea Island Company’s Retreat Plantation (on St. Simons Island), followed by the remodeling of an existing beach pavilion on Sea Island itself.  Recognizing the need to accommodate visitors to both venues, Coffin along with his younger cousin Alfred W. Jones enlisted the help of renowned Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner to construct a small Spanish influenced hotel, and in the fall of 1928, Sea Island’s first inn – the 48-room Cloister – opened its doors to guests.

As a developer, Coffin went to exceptional lengths preserving the character of the area, including a painstaking preservation of many of the existing Plantation structures during the development of the Retreat Plantation golf course (several of which you can still see today when visiting the Plantation).  He was also one of the nation’s first developers to fund a county survey, laying the foundation for zoning laws that would lead Sea Island on a path of gradual, environmentally sensitive development.

In 1928, Coffin turned over control of the Sea Island Company to his cousin Alfred W. Jones, the first of three Jones generations that would eventually help transform Sea Island into what it is today.  Alfred W. Jones Sr. would serve to guide Sea Island through the financial difficulties of the Great Depression.  In 1966, Alfred W. Jones Jr. succeeded his father as president of the company , and in 1997 Alfred “Bill” Jones III became chairman and chief executive officer, eventually undertaking a monumental renovation of Sea Island that included a new hotel, spa and numerous properties throughout Sea Island.

But as much as they’ve focused on making Sea Island such an incredible place for guests, both Coffin and the Jones family have played an integral role in preserving and improving the area, both from a resident and environmental standpoint.  Land for numerous parks, two schools, six churches, the Methodist Conference Center, the private airport on St. Simons Island, an urgent health care facility and a fire department are just some of the ways the Sea Island Company has given back to the community in which they’re a part of.  The Jones family and Sea Island Company have also donated hundreds of acres of land for numerous conservation groups, and have undertaken an expansive beach restoration and management project to preserve Sea Island’s expansive beaches.

In visiting Sea Island, there’s an abundance of options to reside in during your stay, but it’s only fitting to start with the Cloister.  True to its heritage, the Cloister continues to be the centerpiece of Sea Island – an absolutely stunning Mediterranean influenced masterpiece that to be honest, feels absolutely nothing like a hotel.  The majority of hotels have a certain sterility to them – a planned design that leads you on a certain path.  This path typically consists of your arrival, your short trip to the lobby, your path to the elevator, and the entrance into your room.  Sure there’s a few public places scattered here and there, but they rank somewhere between a hospital waiting room and an airport lounge in terms of their appeal and usefulness.

The Cloister is the exact opposite.  From the minute you arrive, the overwhelming impression is that you’ve arrived not at a hotel, but rather at an absolutely spectacular private residence.  Enter the doors, and you’re welcomed by a sprawling open main lounge with soaring ceilings, numerous seating areas, stunning antique chandeliers and antique furnishings throughout.  In truth, calling it a lounge is doing it a bit of a disservice – if anything, it’s more like an expansive, beautifully decorated living area that beckons you to take advantage of one of its many seating options.  And as I would come to learn, it’s an area that is in many ways indicative of the Cloister as a whole.

Sea Island Cloister Solarium

Sea Island Cloister Solarium

For all its grandeur and for all its majesty, the Cloister is exceptional in that it’s designed to be enjoyed.  And I don’t mean your room is meant to be enjoyed, I mean the Cloister as a whole is meant to be enjoyed.  When you’re there, you truly feel at home.  In the morning for example, coffee and pastries are served in the solarium, a cozy, light-infused room with hand painted murals on the walls, comfortable furnishings and newspapers to read.  It’s exactly the room you’d want to enjoy a light breakfast in in your own home.  There’s even two pairs of lovebirds that reside in the room, lending a musical note while you relax.

Another absolutely magnificent area of the Cloister is the Spanish Lounge, located just off the main entrance.  In 2003, after serving guests for 75 years, the original Addison Mizner-designed Cloister was razed, and the current Cloister was constructed in it place.  As part of the new part Cloister, it was vital to Bill Jones (then Sea Island CEO) to preserve the legacy of Addison Mizner, and the Spanish Lounge is a shining testament to that fact.  The current Spanish Lounge is a stunning recreation of Mizner’s original Spanish Lounge, with beautiful leaded glass windows, chandeliers, a carved stone fireplace and many of the furnishing all carried over from the previous structure.  To see the similarities between the two, the current Spanish Lounge contains original photos of the room, allowing you to witness firsthand the Spanish Lounge’s rich heritage.  As with the rest of the Cloister, the Spanish Lounge is fully at your disposal, with multiple seating areas that welcome guests to use as they wish.

Those are just two of the stunning areas to enjoy in the Cloister; there are almost too many to list.  There’s an absolutely gorgeous wood paneled library, full stocked with thousands of books, board games and puzzles – along with seating areas and tables to enjoy them.  There’s the Georgian Room Lounge, another beautifully paneled room with numerous seating area and beautiful artwork – the perfect place to mingle or relax when enjoying dinner at the Georgian Room restaurant.  There the Smoking Room, yet another fully paneled room that’s the perfect place to take a break and enjoy a fine cigar.  Everywhere you turn in the Cloister is another area to enjoy, and all are exquisitely and uniquely finished.  A variety of stunning millwork adorns each room, with pecky cyprus beamed and coffered ceilings, wood paneled walls, and a variety of moldings and details that give character to each space.  Antique furnishings fill every room; interesting artwork lines the walls; even the rugs have a story.  A total of 750 Turkish rugs reside in the Cloister, all of which were commissioned from numerous villages in Turkey and produced on the same looms that have been in operation for over 200 years.  It’s the largest collection of Turkish rugs anywhere in the world, and just one of the numerous things that make the Cloister such a remarkable place.

Sea Island Cloister Suite Bedroom

Sea Island Cloister Suite Bedroom

Matching the exquisiteness of the Cloister as a whole, the rooms themselves are equally stunning.  I resided in a Cloister view suite, a 950 square foot space that included a living area and secondary workspace, a separate bedroom with two queen beds, a spacious dressing area with vanity, and a beautiful bathroom with deep soaking tub and separate rainhead shower.  To take in the views of the beautifully manicured Cloister gardens, there’s also a balcony off the main living area – the perfect spot to enjoy an early morning coffee and take in some fresh Souther air.  In terms of design, the Mediterranean influence found throughout the Cloister carries over beautifully into the rooms, with exposed beam ceilings, hardwood floors, antique furnishings and the aforementioned Turkish rugs just some of the elements giving character to the spaces.

Traveling with my wife and two children, it was impossible to find fault with the room.  Upon check-in, everything was perfect from the minute I arrived at the Cloister.  A crib for my daughter was already set up in the room, and kids’ amenities were already waiting in the bathroom.  That night during turn down service, my son was introduced to his first of what would become a nightly ritual of chocolatey treats magically appearing on his bed – a small touch that he was exceptionally grateful for.  And as for the room itself, it was a perfect compliment to the rest of the Cloister – warm and inviting, but with the perfect amount of luxury and elegance mixed in.  Whereas some hotels tend to focus on style and forget about livability, the Cloister pairs both beautifully, easily ranking among the most comfortable rooms I’ve resided in while still noting a beautifully distinct sense of character.  It really is like being at home, and for most, I would surmise it’s even better.

Sea Island Cloister Resort

Sea Island Cloister Colonial Lounge

Another element I love about the Cloister is the seamlessness between the different spaces.  Most hotels tend to have a disconnect between the rooms and other areas – a lapse in style, if you will, where attention to detail is overlooked.  Usually it’s a hallway.  You’ll enter a beautiful lobby, and eventually you’ll enter your beautiful room, but in between there’s the dreaded, uninspired hallway you must first pass through.  At the Cloister, everything is inspired… everything has been meticulously thought out and executed.  Many of the rooms center around the main lounge of the Cloister, again emphasizing the feeling that this is less of a hotel and more of a residence.  Secondly, when there are corridors to traverse, all note remarkably unique things to see along the way.  It may be artwork, it may photographs of past world leaders that have resided on Sea Island or it may blueprints for the original Cloister.  It’s an attention to detail that not only ties the rooms together with the rest of the main areas, it also plays an integral role in making the Cloister, despite its relatively massive size, feel like a home.

In addition to the my chosen Cloister view suite, a variety of other accommodation options are available, including:

  • River view rooms (noting 700 sq. ft. of space),
  • River view suites (noting the same features as my suite, but with views of the Black Banks River and golden marshland),
  • The Black Banks Suite (1,730 sq. ft. features two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a living room, and expansive wrap-around balcony), and
  • The Sea Island Suite (2,220 sq. ft. with one king bedroom, 2.5 bathrooms, a living room with fireplace, library, and a private balcony)
The Beach Club at Sea Island

The Beach Club at Sea Island

As if that wasn’t enough to choose from, the Cloister also offers two additional accommodation options separate from the main building:  the Cloister Beach Club Suites and the Cloister Ocean Villas.  Because I didn’t reside in either I won’t go into details, but they both offer many of the design elements and features found in the main Cloister’s other rooms, with the key difference being they’re located just off Sea Island’s expansive stretch of beach.  In terms of size, the Cloister Beach Club Suites include both standard rooms and several suite options, whereas the Cloister Ocean Villas are larger, ranging from 1,170 to 3,274 square feet in one, two and three bedroom options.

And lastly, for a truly remarkable stay on Sea Island, approximately one-third of the 600 homes and condominiums (known as Cottages) are available for rent, ranging in size from three to eight bedrooms, each of which are fully furnished, and all offering the same amenities found in the Cloister’s other accommodations.

Sea Island Dining

There are a total of five main dining options at the Sea Island properties – two in the Cloister, one in the Cloister Beach Club and two in the Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club – along with several smaller dining options.  In the Cloister, the centerpiece of Sea Island’s culinary experience is the Forbes Five-Star bestowed Georgian Room, an exceptionally elegant venue led by Chef Daniel Zeal.  The menu is described as an artful interpretation of refined Southern cuisine, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients that are organic when possible (many of which are locally grown).  Sample dishes from Chef Zeal’s tasting menu include Laughing Bird Shrimp with hearts of palm, horseradish and caviar; foie gras with sweet potato pie, pecans and bacon-onion marmalade; and squab with red wine braised endive, chestnuts and toasted farro.

Sea Island Restaurants georgian room

Fine Dining in the Georgian Room at the Cloister

Matching the exquisite menu, the Georgian Room’s decor is simply stunning.  A beautiful coffered ceiling with gold and crystal chandeliers resides above guests, while food is served on hand-painted Bernardaud china and Waterford crystal.  For slightly larger parties, a private dining room in a domed alcove accommodates up to 10 guests, with design highlights including leaded-glass windows and hand-painted murals on the walls.  Lastly, for a behind-the-scenes look at the genius of Chef Zeal, guests can reserve The Chef’s Table at the Georgian Room, which is limited to just four seats.  In addition to watching each of your entrées prepared, Chef Zeal personally introduces each course from the tasting menu and offers tasting tips and reviews of the sommelier’s paired wine selections.

For more casual fare, the Cloister and Cloister Beach Club offer two additional dining options:  the Black Banks River Bar and Big George’s.  Both offer more casual, still Southern influenced cuisine, and both are perfect alternatives for a relaxed night out.  At the Black Banks River Bar, a range of lagers, wine, bourbon, single-malt scotch and whiskey are all available, as are traditional Southern specialties:  the Mint Julep, Plantation Punch and Front Porch Lemonade.  Lunch and dinner menus feature a variety of classic fare, including fried green tomatoes, baby back ribs and shrimp nachos, along with a variety of sandwiches, salads and desert.

Big George’s notes a similar menu, but in a varied beachfront setting.  A warm rustic decor, expansive outdoor seating and wrap around porch and bar make Big George’s a perfect place to relax and spend time with friends and family.  Menu options include a variety of seafood (including the local catch of the day), baby back ribs, numerous deserts and other Southern specialities.

Sea Island Restaurants colt ad alison

Dining at Colt & Alison in the Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club

As for the Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club, your options include a classic steakhouse in the form of Colt & Alison as well as a tavern setting with a gourmet influence in the form of the Oak Room.  At Colt & Alison, named for the architect’s of Sea Island’s original Seaside golf course, Executive Chef John Helfrich serves a variety of USDA wet and dry-aged beef along with local and imported seafood options.  Befitting of the English-manor inspired Lodge in which it resides, Colt & Alison’s decor includes high back leather chairs, a wood-burning fireplace and cozy banquettes, along with original plans of Colt & Alison blueprints adorning the walls.  Lastly, guests can choose from Colt & Alison’s extensive wine selection, or let one of the resident sommeliers make recommendations based on your entrées.

At the Oak Room, hand painted murals, leather ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace and an expansive outdoor terrace overlooking the Plantation golf course all serve to create a relaxing, tavern inspired setting.  Menu options include blue crab jalapeno hushpuppies, ahi tuna tartar and an award-winning shrimp and grits, all of which pair beautifully with the beers on tap and extensive wine selection.  Other indulgences include an array of single-malt scotch along with a large selection of cigars from the Oak Room’s temperature-controlled humidor.

Sea Island Golf

Since 1928, golf has served as a key focus of Sea Island, so it’s no surprise the Sea Island has established itself as one of the nation’s top destinations for golf enthusiasts.  It’s been named the top golf community in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure,it’s home to numerous PGA players including Davis Love III, and it employs more teachers from Golf Digest’s list of top 50 instructors than any other facility.  If you love golf, there’s simply nothing like Sea Island anywhere else in the country.

The Seaside Course, home to the PGA TOUR’s McGladrey Classic, is a links course graced by majestic ocean vistas in the tradition of St. Andrews

The Seaside Course at Sea Island is home to the PGA TOUR’s McGladrey Classic

At the center of Sea Island golf is the Lodge, a AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star recipient that serves as both a luxurious resort as well as clubhouse.  Styled after an elegant English Manor, the Lodge is situated directly on the fairways of the Plantation golf course, framed by the beaches of St. Simons Sound and the Atlantic.  In addition to numerous dining options and accommodations, the Lodge boasts a remarkable 10,000 square foot locker room with virtually every amenity imaginable, creating the feeling of private club in a resort setting.

Next to the Lodge is Sea Island’s Golf Learning Center, a facility aimed at improving the skill of virtually every golfer imaginable, whether you’re a novice or PGA pro.  As already noted, Sea Island employs more of Golf Digest’s top 50 teachers than other facility in the world:  Jack Lumpkin, Todd Anderson, Gale Peterson and Mike Shannon.  From there, a team of specialists are available to assist every aspect of your game.  Psychology, golf fitness, club fitting, swing and short-game analysis are just some of the areas the Golf Learning Center can analyze, with the specialists then delivering a tailored instruction and practice plan to help you achieve your specific goals.  In no simpler terms, if you’re wondering where the pros go to get better, this is the place.

The Plantation Course at Sea Island winds through forest with ocean views

The Plantation Course at Sea Island winds through forest with ocean views

As for the golf itself, Sea Island offers a total of 54 holes through three championship courses:  Seaside, Plantation and Retreat.  Located on the southern tip of St. Simons Island, Seaside is an incredibly magnificent Par 70 links-style course, with 15 holes flanked by marsh, water and ocean views.  Originally designed in 1929 by famed architects Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison, Seaside was updated by Tom Fazio in 1999, and subsequently named one of Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Courses in the United States.”  It’s also host of the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic as well as multiple USGA events.

Dating back even further, Sea Island’s Plantation course notes an even longer lineage, originally designed in 1926 by Walter Travis.  In 1998, renowned golf architect Rees Jones undertook the renovation of Plantation, creating a challengingPar 72 “parkland by the sea”.  Today, a forest of live oak and cedar give way to the stunning Plantation course, which notes expansive fairways, beautiful views of the ocean and a mixture of foliage.  Adding a hint of danger to the course, numerous tidal creeks, lakes and ponds await during seven of the front-side holes, while the back nine note vistas of both the Atlantic and Sea Island’s Lodge.

The final course awaiting golf enthusiasts visiting Sea Island is the Retreat, renovated by Davis Love III and is brother Mark in 2000.  A 6,490 yard Par 72 course, the Retreat was designed to be both dramatic and complex, noting green complexes that are a combination of slope, sand bunkers, and undulations.  As a result, true mastery of the course requires hitting a variety of shots, exactly what the brothers intended when designing it.

Sea Island Cloister Spa

Garden Atrium at the Sea Island Spa

As part of Sea Island’s expansive rejuvenation in 2006, the Cloister Spa was re-imagined for the 21st century, the result of which is a 65,000 square foot spa and fitness center that is absolutely stunning.  The recipient of the Forbes Five-Star spa award, the Cloister Spa offers an unparalleled rejuvenation experience, both from a relaxation and a fitness standpoint.  Upon entering, you’re immediately greeted by the Cloister Spa’s central element of water – a theme carried throughout the facilities.  As you journey throughout the spa, transparent lighted glass floor canals carry water to each of the distinct areas, including the hallways, reception area and fitness center, until eventually leading to the spa’s magnificent pool.  Another area centered around water is the Garden Atrium, which boasts an expansive tree-filled plaza surrounding a gently flowing brooke with smooth boulders throughout.  Guests of the spa can relax in one of the many chaise lounges, taking in the subtle sounds of the flowing water.

In total, the Cloister Spa notes a total of 23 treatment rooms, two of which are “Together Suites” where couples and/or friends can enjoy one of the various treatment options together.  Spa services available include a variety of exfoliation options, facials, massages and body wraps, complimented by Spa Service Guides who consult with you to tailor a specific program of wellness based on your unique needs.

Once you’re relaxed and rejuvenated, you can then turn your attention to the fitness facility, which includes an indoor-pool, state-of-the-art strength and cardio equipment, one Power Plate and three squash courts.  From there, you can also opt to take part in a variety of fitness programs in one of the Cloister Spa’s five studios, including Pilates, yoga, and/or one of strength or cardio programs.  To help you make the most of your time in the fitness center, the Cloister Spa is staffed by numerous professional fitness trainers, including three Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified instructors.  And serving as Sea Island director of fitness, Randy Myers, who also serves as an advisory board director for TPI, works with both guests and golfers to achieve specific fitness goals.

Sea Island Weddings and Special Events

One of the things that amazes me most about Sea Island is the incredible amount of flexibility it has in terms of accommodating guests.  Whether for a wedding, corporate retreat or any other special occasion, there’s nothing Sea Island wouldn’t excel at hosting.  I can’t tell you how many places my wife pointed out as perfect venues for a wedding.  In the gardens of the Cloister, for example, there’s an intimate little chapel lined with stained glass windows and framed by old oak trees.  For an outdoor wedding, the marshes behind the Cloister are simply spectacular, as is the Atlantic coastline.  And for the quintessential southern experience, the avenue of oaks at Sea Island’s Golf Club is without question one of the most beautiful spots on all of the Sea Island properties.

Sea Island Clubroom at the Cloisters

Sea Island Clubroom at the Cloisters

But what may be Sea Island’s greatest appeal for special events – and for weddings in particular – is the flexibility you have in terms of wedding size.  I spoke with several members of the Sea Island staff, and they take as much pride and care in planning an intimate wedding for 20 as they do for a larger wedding party of 300.  Not only for the venue, but also for the culinary experience afterwords.  Whether its selecting the absolutely mesmerizing Clubroom for a grand and formal reception; enjoying an intimate dinner in the Wine Cellar; or celebrating outside under the stars with the glow of candlelight illuminating the night, there simply isn’t any dream Sea Island can’t make a reality.

For corporate events, it’s this same flexibility and attention to detail that makes Sea Island an ideal meeting place for virtually any occasion.  And there’s no clearer testament to the ability of Sea Island than when in 2004, it played host to the 30th annual G8 Summit, making it one of only six U.S. destinations to hold the title.  During the event, leaders from eight countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy Japan and Russia) including President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were in attendance, as were leaders and dignitaries from several other Middle Eastern and African countries.  Following the event, President Bush noted that “The Southern Hospitality was strong… We made the right choice to come down here for this Summit.  The people were just spectacular.”

Sea Island Corporate Events Ballroom

Sea Island Corporate Events Ballroom

In keeping with the service that inspired the President to hold the G8 Summit, Sea Island continues to be a premier destination for corporate retreats, whether for a party of 10 or 300.  A variety of conference rooms and boardrooms are available for parties of virtually any size, as are tailored packages that include golfing, dining and entertainment options built-in.  Even the table and chairs used in the G8 Summit are in use at Sea Island for corporate events, complete with placards and country flags designating the original G8 Summit’s seating arrangement.  As with weddings at Sea Island, chances are if you can plan it, the impeccable staff at Sea Island can make it a reality.

Sea Island Activities

After the world class golfing, the expansive spa and fitness center activities and extensive array of dining options, you may suspect I’ve come close to describing all that’s available to you during your time at Sea Island.  I assure you – I haven’t even come close.  For sports lovers, there’s a phenomenal Tennis Center, featuring eight Har-Tru clay courts along with a full range of clinics, lessons and round robin tournaments.  Do you enjoy the water?  Sailing, kayaking and body boarding are some of the more active things to enjoy around the island, or for a more leisurely day out, enjoy a cruise through local waters aboard Sea Island’s vintage yacht:  the Cloister Belle.

Sea Island Shooting School

Sea Island Shooting School

Then there’s the Sea Island Shooting School, continuing Sea Island’s long history of sport shooting on the island.  Since 1929, the Sea Island Shooting School has entertained both novices and skilled shooters alike, and today it holds ranks as one of the premier shooting facilities in America.  In addition to taking lessons with NSCA-certified instructors, shooters can enjoy a fivestand sporting clay field, two skeet ranges and a trap field.  Also, experienced shooters can also travel to nearby Rainbow Island to enjoy a 10-station sporting clay range.

During my time at Sea Island, my wife and I indulged in two other activities available to guests:  a fishing and nature excursion in the magnificent tidal marshes or Sea Island, as well as horseback riding on the beach.  For the fishermen (or fisherwomen) among you, Sea Island offers a huge variety of fishing options, with a total of four center console boats on hand – capable of traveling in as little as six inches of water or up to 30 miles offshore.  Some of the varieties of fish native to the waters include king and Spanish mackerel, cobia, grouper, red snapper, tarpon, wahoo, tuna and sailfish.

Sea Island Fishing Expedition

Because neither my wife or I are experience fishers, we opted to stay in the tidal marshes that divide Sea Island from neighboring St Simons to do our fishing.  Our boat was piloted the fantastic Captain Clay, and I kid you not:  three seconds after casting out our first line, we were reeling in our first trout of the day.  We thought it was luck, and then it just kept happening.  Trout after trout after trout.  After a couple hours, we literally had caught enough trout to feed a small African village for a month.  Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but we did catch so many fish we lost track of the count.  As a fishing guide, Captain Clay couldn’t have been better.  He was clearly adept at understanding our lack of fishing experience, and helped us not only catch the fish, but also taught us some of the intricacies of fishing the native waters.  He was also an invaluable resource when it came to learning about the marshes and the area as a whole, and more importantly, he’s just a laid back, super friendly guy.  Looking back on the trip, the fishing excursion was easily one of our favorite parts of the trip.  Watching the sun come up over the golden marsh, seeing dolphins jumping 50 feet away from your boat, catching too many fish too count – you really can’t get any better than that.

Then there was the horseback riding.  Sea Island is one of the few places that offers horseback riding on its beaches, and to everyone visiting Sea Island with their significant other, it’s a must.  There simply isn’t anything more romantic than riding horses on a beach.  Like the fishing (and really everything else available at Sea Island), the horseback riding is geared for any experience level, so if you’ve never ridden a horse, there’s nothing to fear.  Your day starts out at Sea Island’s stable, where your guides (who were again fantastic) will go over the basics of how to control the horse.  From there, you take a quick ride to the beach, where the expansive Atlantic coastline and stunning views await.  The trip lasts about an hour and a half, and it delivers a trul;y unforgettable way to take in the spectacular view of Sea Island.  For any visiting Sea Island – especially as a couple –  I highly recommend it.

Sea Island for Families

Talk to the staff at Sea Island, and one of the things they take exceptional pride in is the fact many of the guests don’t just visit Sea Island, they make Sea Island part of their family tradition.  Families bring their children to Sea Island, and these children grow up and bring their own children.  Sea Island is like an heirloom for many families, passed down and enjoyed over the generations.

Sea Island Children's Shooting School

Sea Island Children’s Shooting School

Since the 1960’s, Sea Island began a program specifically for kids, in the form of their Junior Staff program.  Today, Sea Island boasts an absolutely incredible amount of children’s and families activities, easily ranking among the most family oriented destinations I’ve ever visited.  For younger guests, Camp Cloister offers a variety of daily activities that focus on exploring Sea Island nature.  There’s Cookie Cutters – a Sea Island tradition where children create, bake and decorate cookies and various other treats.  There’s a Just for Teens program, that includes numerous sporting activities (kayaking, bowling, etc.), shopping at neighboring St. Simons boutiques and trips to the Cloister Spa for specially designed facials, massages and makeovers.  And from an educational standpoint, Sea Island goes to extensive lengths to ensure it teaches everything it offers.  Kids can gain instruction in all of Sea Island’s many activities, including extensive golf and shooting programs taught by the Sea Island’s impeccable staff.

Sea Island Activities elf tuck in

Elf Tuck-in at Sea Island for Christmas

For those traveling with young ones too little to take part in the kids activities, Sea Island works with several local babysitters as well, which my wife and I used on numerous occasions.  As both my children will attest to, Ms. Terry did a fantastic job watching them while we were out exploring Sea Island, and I would leave them with her again in a heartbeat.  If you have kids (whether infants or teens) and are considering a trip to Sea Island, it’s a place that anyone, of any age, will absolutely love.

Sea Island Conclusion

As the length of this article can attest to, Sea Island is anything but a typical hotel.  It’s an expansive, stunningly amazing destination that truly offers something for everyone, irregardless of your age or background.  There simply isn’t anyone who will visit Sea Island that won’t leave realizing what a special place it is.  The accommodations are magnificent in every sense of the word.  Every structure, every place you go, is a work of art.  The staff exudes a hospitality that you’ll only find in the South – a genuine, truly welcoming hospitality that during your stay, makes you feel like you’re at home.  And the amount of activities available to guests – both children and adults – is seemingly endless.

If you’re looking for one of the most extraordinary destinations not only in the South, but in the country (and world for that matter), Sea Island is a place that you absolutely have to visit.  It is remarkable – a place that not only do I look forward to returning to, it’s a place that hopefully my kids, and their kids, and their kids will all have the joy of returning to as well.  It’s forever changed my view of what’s possible in a hotel and destination, and I truly can’t recommend it highly enough.

To learn more about Sea Island and it’s numerous accommodation options, head over to the official Sea Island website for the complete details of everything offered.  I’ve also included an extensive photo gallery below, highlighting just some of the many things that await guests visiting Sea Island for themselves.

An Unlikely Vacation Spot – Lexington, Ky

Lexington is a place surrounded by idyllic horse farms, rolling hills and a city center with great shopping, amazing BBQ and some of the friendliest people in the country

If you’re unfamiliar with Lexington, it’s a place surrounded by idyllic horse farms, rolling hills and a city center with great shopping, amazing BBQ and some of the friendliest people in the country.  At least that’s what my former college roommate and now three year Lexington resident told me. So this summer, when my family had a few days free, we took a little road trip, heading down south to Lexington to see whether or not it lived up to my friend’s complimentary narrative.

And while I could proceed to drag out my thoughts on Lexington, keeping you in rapt suspense and dragging out my sentiments as long as possible, I’ll get straight to the point:  Lexington lived up to the hype.  After staying there, I can honestly say for anyone looking for a country retreat, it’s one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I’ve been.  Everywhere you go you’re surrounded by rolling hills and magnificent horse farms with miles and miles of unspoiled green space, while Lexington itself is simply an inviting city with a wealth of dining and shopping options.  Our ideal Lexington vacation did take some planning, however, and it started with picking a hotel that catered to my family’s needs.  Our choice?  The Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa.

Griffin Gate Marriott

Griffin Gate Marriott

The Griffin Gate Marriott is a place that can be best described as an urban oasis, just minutes outside of downtown Lexington yet set on grounds that are spacious and secluded.  The location was one of the reasons we chose the Griffin Gate Marriott, as it’s not only close to downtown for quick access to shopping and dining but it’s also right off the highway, making day trips that required a little more travel, quick and easy.

Recently renovated, from the moment you walk in, the hotel is bright and welcoming with locally inspired art and sculptures found throughout. The lobby is beautiful, and numerous seating options provide business travelers  ample places to work.  For my family, however, the rooms were the highlight of the hotel. As a family of five, we need space, and the Griffin Gate Marriott’s two room suite offered more than enough for all of us. We had two large and spacious bedrooms with walls of glass doors for plenty of light that were connected by a spacious living area complete with a large dining table, kitchen and sitting area with couch and tv.  Outside was a wrap-around patio, offering the option to relax and unwind outside as well.  Travel to a larger city, and the square footage would give a Presidential Suite a run for its money.  After days of seeing the Kentucky countryside, it was fantastic to be able to come back to the hotel and unwind in such a spacious room.  To be honest, it didn’t really feel like a hotel, it felt more like a home away from home.  Whether it was sitting in the living room watching a late night movie together or enjoying breakfast in the morning at the dining table, the Griffin Gate Marriott truly made us feel at home.

Venture outside the hotel, and there’s a wealth of great family options.  I recommend a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park (a highlight for the kids and a must considering you’re in the “horse capital of the world”), taking a back-country hike at Raven Run, and for the bourbon lovers among you, visiting any of the numerous Kentucky Bourbon distilleries. Once you’ve worn yourself out, head back to the hotel for one of the numerous resort activities, whether it’s taking an invigorating swim indoors or out, soaking in the hot tub, pampering yourself in the spa or playing a round on the Griffin Gate Marriott’s Rees Jones-designed golf course.

Once you’ve relaxed and built up an appetite, your dining options are endless. If you’d prefer to stay in your hotel, I recommend JW’s Steakhouse for melt-in-your-mouth steaks seared to perfection. And while the steaks are good enough to convert non-meat eaters, for those that prefer  a lighter option, JW’s offers seafood and chicken selections or what my wife chose and loved:  the herb crusted lamb chops with mint julep sauce. Venture out for lunch or dinner and you won’t be disappointed, as Lexington features restaurants of all types and cuisines. I recommend COLES 735 MAIN, a casual yet fine dining experience that is more reminiscent of the French countryside that what you’d expect in Kentucky, or for a true local Southern treat, visit Red State BBQ, which is less than ten minutes away from the hotel. It’s a meal that’s perfect for the whole family, because let’s face it – can you really get better than slow smoked meats served with beer cheese grits and corn pudding followed up with a family serving of peach bread pudding and bourbon ice cream?  I didn’t think so.

I’ll be honest – Lexington wasn’t my first choice when it came to a vacation, but after having the great pleasure of visiting, I can say wholeheartedly that for anyone wanting to escape to the country, it’s simply a wonderful place to visit.  The people are amazing, the landscapes are breathtaking, and there’s a huge amount of things to do and see.  And when you go, the Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa offers everything you need and more, providing a perfect and luxurious way to experience the one and only Bluegrass State.

Up until about six months ago I was a resident of sunny southwest Florida, and aside from the collapsing housing market and copious amounts of traffic, I had no complaints.  My options for taking a relaxing weekend getaway, however,  were somewhat limited, considering the fact I was already living in paradise.  Enter Key West.  It’s remote, laid back, and best of all, it’s a three-hour ferry ride from either Ft. Myers or Marco Island.  And my quest for a relaxing weekend getaway was complete.

While there, my favorite place to stay was the Ocean Key Resort and Spa.  The rooms are bright and colorful (quintessential Key West), the staff has always been wonderful, and best of all, the location is superb.  You’re situated at the end of Duval Street directly on the water and Mallory Square is right out your window (which, if you’ve never partaken in the sunset celebration, is a must).  For the dining aficionados, they’ve got a great restaurant (the Hot Tin Roof) with seating directly on the water, and of course, there’s a variety of spa services as well.

My advice for a fantastic night:  head over to the sunset celebration and take in some of the performances, enjoy the sunset, then visit the Cuban restaurant El Mason de Pepe (which again is right outside your doorstep).  Order the “Rabirubia Frita Entera” (fried whole yellowtail, marinated w/fresh key lime, garlic and onions) and pair it with a few mojitos.  It’s a beautiful thing, let me tell you.
