Earlier today we saw renderings of what the Mercedes C63 AMG could look like and now we have a rendering of what a future C-Class Hatchback could look like from master automotive manipulator Theophilus Chin. Based on the rendering and its similarity to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the real question is whether or not a C-Class Hatchback is really necessary. The C-Class hatchback will likely come in on the large size for a compact hatchback, around 4,500 mm long while the A-Class is already 4,292 mm long. So, which would you rather have?

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the “Edition 1” version of the A45 AMG making us love the mini AMG even more. Like the recently unveiled “Edition 1” CLA 180, the A 45 AMG “Edition 1” stands apart both on a technical level and in terms of appearance. The A 45 AMG “Edition 1” focuses on the car’s affinity to motorsport: the exterior paint finish in cirrus white corresponds with the AMG sports stripes in matt graphite grey on the bonnet, roof and sides. The red highlights on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors and rear aerofoil leave a lasting impression. These highlights combine to perfection with the red painted brake calipers and the AMG multispoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt black with special AMG hub caps in central-locking look. The 8 x 19 light-alloy wheels are fitted all-round with tires in size 235/35 R 19. Both the AMG Night package and the Aerodynamics package feature as standard for the “Edition 1”, providing the perfect finishing touch to the model’s motorsport-inspired character.
Black and red dominate the interior of the A 45 AMG “Edition 1”. Red contrasting stitching embellishes the AMG Performance seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfiber, the top section of the dashboard in ARTICO man-made leather and the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfiber. Other visual highlights are the E-SELECT lever with embossed AMG emblem and the “Edition 1” badge on the AMG DRIVE UNIT.
German tuner, Brabus, unveiled their latest creation based on the all new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback. The first images of the shiny red hatchback riding on a lowered sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels in the classic Brabus design show us what will be possible for the most current generation of the A-Class that will soon begin arriving in showrooms across Europe
Brabus tells Carscoop that there is more to come, and while they didn’t go into any further details, it’s safe to say that among other parts, we should expect to see an aero body kit, custom exhaust systems, more alloy wheel options, power kits and select interior upgrades such as scuff plates and custom leather upholstery.
In the meantime, to wet your appetite, view the photo gallery below and remember to click for hi-resoution photos.
The first photo and video of the Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, as well as complete details, have made their way to the web. This will more than likely mean that we will have a complete photo gallery for you direct from Mercedes shortly.
As we had previously speculated, the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake takes on the same figures as its four-door coupe sibling. The shooting brake is propelled by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 which produces 557 PS (410 kW / 550 bhp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque with the AMG Performance package while the standard engine configuration is rated at 525 PS (386 kW / 518 bhp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Running 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed that is electronically limited to 155 mph, you can’t ask for much more from a souped up station wagon. The engine of the high-performance CLS63 Shooting Brake is mated to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission.
For lower fuel consumption, Mercedes equipped the shooting brake with ECO Start-Stop function and is rated to 14.0 liters / 100 km fuel consumption in the city, with a 7.8 liters / 100 km fuel economy on the highway and with 10.1 liters / 100 km in the combined cycle. The CO2 emissions are rated at 235 g/km.
We will no doubt have a complete photo gallery and full press release for you shortly, but for now enjoy the video courtesy of our good German friends at MB Passion.
With air conditioning, Audio 5 USB, electric windows all round, Headlamp Assist, 12-button multifunction steering wheel and the comprehensive safety package including COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, the A-Class is already fully equipped even in its base configuration. With “Urban”, “Style” and “AMG Sport” appointment lines, three Design packages as well as further optional extras, the model can be customised to suit every individual taste. Available appointments, many familiar from higher vehicle classes, also include the Intelligent Light System, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function or dashboard finished in ARTICO man-made leather. Further sporty details designed to appeal to the vehicle’s young target group include designo seat belts in red or the sporty instrument cluster featuring a “chequered flag” design.
All three design and equipment lines can basically be combined with all engine variants. The “Style” line has a radiator grille with two slats in the vehicle colour and chrome inserts, and the waistline trim strip is finished in a chrome look. The stylish appearance is enhanced further with light-alloy wheels featuring a 10-spoke design and measuring either 16 inches (all models except for the A 250 BlueEFFICIENCY) or 17 inches (A 250 BlueEFFICIENCY). Highlights in the interior include matrix-look trim elements as well as front sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/Messancy fabric with contrasting stitching. Contrasting stitching is also to be found on the armrests on the centre console and the doors. The gear lever has a silver chrome surround. The ring around the headlamp switch and the nozzle crosses on the air vents in the dashboard are also finished in silver chrome.
Practical details of the “Style” line include the Seat Comfort package (with height adjustment for the front passenger seat and seat cushion angle adjustment for driver and front passenger), multifunction holder in the centre console and 12 V socket in the rear.
A particular feature of the “Urban” line is the sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured circular instruments, “chequered flag” design and red dial pointers. This is matched by the checked pattern of the trim elements. The dynamic impression continues with the sports seats with upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/Larochette fabric. Contrasting stitching is used on the seats, armrests, multifunction steering wheel and the gear lever in nappa leather. The 3-spoke steering wheel also has a perforated grip area. The Seat Comfort package, multifunction holder in the centre console and 12 V socket in the rear again come as standard, as does the chrome finish on the headlamp switch and nozzle crosses. Distinctive characteristics of the exterior include the twin-pipe exhaust system with oval tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel and the radiator grille with silver-coloured twin slats with chrome highlights. The “Urban” line also features a chrome-look waistline trim strip and 17-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.
“AMG Sport” is the name of the third equipment line, which again is available for all engine variants. This is the line in which the colour red comes into play: it features in the contrasting stitching on the sports seats (with upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre), the nappa leather multifunction steering wheel with flattened bottom section, and the armrests. This is matched with the sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured circular instruments, “chequered flag” design and red dial pointers as well as sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. Trim elements feature a chrome-look finish, and the front and rear door sill panels are made of aluminium. The sporty theme is continued with the exterior: as standard the “AMG Sport” model boasts a twin-pipe exhaust system with oval tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel, silver-painted radiator grille with chrome inserts, 18-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels and AMG bodystyling (front and rear aprons and side sill panels). Those opting for the “AMG Sport” model will also get an A-Class with a sports suspension, lowered body and Direct-Steer system. The front brake discs are also perforated.
Even more dynamic: the A 250 Sport
In the case of the A 250 Sport, the “AMG Sport” appointment line is available as standard. The visual affinity to the Concept A-CLASS is especially evident with these models – particularly due to the new diamond grille. The A-Class Sport features exclusive 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design with 235/40 R 18 tyres all round and painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, together with red-painted brake callipers. These give an indication of the vehicle’s particularly dynamic driving qualities which are characterised, amongst other features, by a special AMG-developed front axle and a suspension that has been configured to match. With its special engine and transmission configuration, the A 250 Sport also provides a very special driving experience which is enhanced further by the emotionally appealing sound of the modified exhaust system.
Hints of red on the AMG front and rear aprons also serve to emphasise the expressive positioning of the new model. In conjunction with Intelligent Light System or bi-xenon lights, the headlamps also have red highlight rings. The contrast between black trim and additional accents in red continues in the interior: the contrasting decorative topstitching on the steering wheel and seats is in this same bright shade, as are the seat belts. The highlight rings of the air vents are similarly finished in red.
Even more choice: the three Design packages
Further individualisation options are possible with the three Design packages which are available for all engine variants. The “Night package” builds on the scope of equipment making up the Style, Urban, and AMG Sport lines as well as the Sport model and supplements them further with a variety of different, additional appointments. The exterior highlights include:
The Exclusive package, which can be chosen in addition to one of three equipment lines, does full justice to its name, featuring a high-quality interpretation of the compact class with leather sports seats, dashboard and door centre panels in ARTICO man-made leather with contrasting stitching, and also trim elements in the appointments colour. The scope of equipment includes a 3-spoke leather steering wheel with 12 function buttons, as well as an infrared receiver in the driver’s door (summer opening/closing function), electric 4-way lumbar support on the front seats and heated seats.
The “AMG Exclusive package”, which is only available in conjunction with the “AMG Sport” equipment line and cannot be combined with the Exclusive package, comprises the following details:
From ‘A’ for accessories to ‘X’ for xenon: additional optional extras
The A-Class is optionally available with bi-xenon lights instead of halogen lights. The latter are furthermore optionally combinable with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). ILS, which is familiar from other Mercedes model lines, comprises bi-xenon headlamps with variable light distribution and dynamic headlamp range for country roads, motorways and dense fog, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, active light function, LED daytime driving lights and headlamp cleaning system.
The Light and Sight package comprises the following details:
A reversing camera is optionally available starting with the Audio 20 CD. This is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged. It supports the driver during lengthways and crossways parking manoeuvres by means of static and dynamic guide lines indicating the vehicle’s line of travel and clearances. Active Parking Assist offers even greater comfort here (see section “Driving assistance systems”).
Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice control system, two navigation solutions tailored to different budgets, connection for mobile audio devices, iPhone® integration and an intuitive operating concept – the A-Class offers information and communication systems with a superior level of functionality which to date has been the reserve of higher vehicle classes. For details see the section on “Multimedia systems”.
Fitted as standard to each A-Class is the THERMATIC manual air conditioning system. Just like the THERMOTRONIC two-zone automatic air conditioning system (optional extra), it has been enhanced in a number of areas. The air conditioning systems now feature noticeably quieter and vibration-free operation, since the blower motor has been mechanically isolated from the housing using special rubber elements. Furthermore, the equipment features optimised air intake in snow and more manual blower settings. An important development goal was also the efficient handling of the drive energy. The air conditioning compressor is operated based on actual requirements, and in dry weather or at temperatures at which no cooling is necessary, the compressor is automatically and steplessly throttled back.
Other optional extras include front seats with memory function, automatic dimming interior and exterior mirrors, designo seat belts in red (expected to be available from the fourth quarter of 2012) for driver and front passenger and rear outer seats, electrically operated panoramic sliding sunroof, auxiliary heating, folding trailer coupling and a Stowage Space package. The latter comprises a spectacles compartment in the overhead control panel, stowage boxes beneath the front seats, nets beneath the parcel shelf, in the front passenger footwell, on the front seat backrests and on the left and right of the luggage compartment, as well as a 12 V socket in the luggage compartment.
The starting point for the interior design was the interior sculpture “Mercedes-Benz Aesthetics No. 2” presented at the Detroit Motor Show in 2011 and which directed attention to the new Mercedes-Benz design language in the vehicle interior, too. The first concrete implementation of this was shown in April 2011 with the “Concept A-CLASS”.
“The inspiration from aircraft design is continued in the A-Class”, explains designer Jan Kaul. “The instrument panel is clearly divided into an upper part inspired on a wing profile and a muscular lower section. This creates the impression that the upper section is supported by a muscle.”
The process used for the production of this muscle allows diverse soft surface textures. It is thus possible to create different surface appearances with an attractive play of lights thanks to three-dimensional structures embedded in foil.
“The interior of the A-Class represents a big step forward in terms of quality – both in the materials used and in the consistency of the design” says Kaul. Both objectives have been achieved with the help of a specific design idiom and through the various combination options possible with the high-quality materials selected. All trim elements have been given an electroplated finish, resulting in real metal surfaces with “cool touch” effect. The work has been executed with considerable care and attention to detail, so that they appear to have been moulded in one piece.
The instrument panel incorporates five round vents. “Like brilliant jewels they underscore the superior quality of the vehicle interior”, explains Kaul. The outer rings of the round vents have a high-quality electroplated finish. The airflow direction is governed by an insert that is reminiscent of an aircraft turbine and reveals a meticulous attention to detail. This too has an electroplated finish in silver-chrome. The free-standing display screen features a black piano-lacquer-look front panel and a flush-fitting silver frame.
The instrument cluster comprises two large round instruments, each with a small dial set within it. When at rest, the dial needles stand at 6 o’clock. The pointer inlays are in white, although with the sportier design and equipment lines such as Urban and AMG Sport they are in red. The dials on the sporty equipment lines and packages are coloured silver with a chequered flag effect. The 3-spoke steering wheel comes with 12 function buttons and an electroplated bezel.
The centre dome and console, as well as the positioning of the various elements such as the head unit, lower control panel, air conditioning operating unit, stowage compartments, rotary pushbutton and armrest, reflect the findings of the ergonomics experts at Mercedes-Benz.
An extensive range of seat coverings, in terms of material (e.g. leather, fabric, ARTICO/fabric), colour combination and also geometry, provides scope for a broad range of individualisation options. Sports seats with integrated head restraints are available with all optional design and equipment lines. The sporty nature of the seats is emphasised by the opening between the upper edge of the seat backrest and the head restraint. On the back of the front seats this opening is edged with a frame in silver chrome and, in conjunction with the Light and Sight package, can also feature ambient lighting.
Designer Jan Kaul sums up: “If you were to take a seat in the A-Class with your eyes closed – you would never think, upon opening your eyes, that you were sitting in a compact-class vehicle.”
Standing as much as 18 centimetres lower on the road than the previous A-Class model, the new hatchback communicates design and dynamism at the very first glance. This radical form language, presented and enthusiastically acclaimed around the world with the Concept A-CLASS, was consistently implemented in the series production car. The appearance of the new A-Class reflects this new Mercedes-Benz design strategy. The result is what is known as a two-box design with a distinct character of its own, a sportily emotive exterior and an exceptionally high-quality feel to the interior.
“Translating the new dynamic style of Mercedes-Benz into the compact class was a challenge that was great fun to tackle”, explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz. “No other car in this segment is as progressive as the A-Class. Absolutely typical for Mercedes is the sculptural shape of the A-Class. The character lines, in particular on its sides, lend the A-Class structure and terseness. The new dynamic style is perceptible at first glance in the interior as well.”
Defined edges and tautly drawn surfaces mark out the exterior design of the new A-Class. The constant interplay between concave and convex surfaces creates a characteristic play of light, particularly along the sides of the car, which contributes to its unique appearance.
Typical features of the long, sporty front are its pronounced V-shape, the separate headlamps, the radiator grille with central Mercedes star and double slats to either side of the star, as well as the additional air intakes on the sides. The “dropping line” apparent in the side profile dissipates towards the vehicle’s front end. The design of the headlamps, together with the configuration of the light functions within them, are a key element of the design concept.
The light modules and LEDs behind the headlamp cover glass have been arranged in such a way as to create the characteristic “flare effect” for the daytime driving lights and indicators. The so-called “flare” is made up of the feature line within the headlamp, the LED modules for the daytime running lamps and the bulb sets for the indicators. This signature effect gives the car its energetic look and so helps to define a new, youthful face for Mercedes.
The perfect interplay of dynamic design and excellent aerodynamics is nowhere more apparent than in the roof, with its smooth surfaces and taut, arcing curve. The silhouette reveals smooth, flowing lines finishing in a flat edge. The roof spoiler, which conveniently hides all the aerials, provides an extra sporty touch and gives structure to the roof assembly. The beltline rises to the rear to form a pronounced wedge-shape. The side view is distinguished by sensuously moulded sculptural side panels and crisp lines. The front structural edge, above the wing, falls in what is known as a “dropping line” in a gentle arc towards the rear. The powerfully-shaped shoulder muscles above the rear axle serve to emphasise the car’s coupé-like character. A further line sweeps up from just in front of the rear wheel arch, then gently fades away. All these lines give depth and dynamism to the car’s profile. Dynamic side sill panels provide a final finishing touch towards the bottom of the car, enhancing the appearance of elegant light-footedness.
The broad emphasis of the tail end is revealed in an interplay of convex-concave surfaces and edges. The tail lights continue the line of the muscular shoulders back towards the rear, while their horizontal orientation emphasises the car’s powerful breadth. The light functions are provided optionally by fibre-optic cables and LED modules. Here, too, the interaction between design and aerodynamics is very clear: the surface finish of the tail lights is not only an interesting design feature, but also improves the airflow around the vehicle thanks to defined airflow break-away edges in the rear section.
Mercedes released their first teaser images and details of the A45 AMG compact hatchback. Marking the 45th anniversary of Mercedes and AMG joining forces, Mercedes will reveal the A45, which will be the top of the range A Class, as well as the most affordable AMG model ever.
Rumored to have 330 hp (246 kW / 335 PS), the Mercedes A45 AMG is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine designed specifically for this model. Developing maximum torque significantly above 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). The new high-performance hatchback will also be equipped with an independent sport suspension, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, high-performance brakes, and 3-stage ESP featuring a “SPORT Handling” mode.
The world debut of the Mercedes A45 AMG will not take place until early next year and will likely go on sale summer 2013. Pricing has yet to be announced.
“A is for Attack: the A-Class is a clear statement of the new dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand”, explains Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “It is completely new, down to the last detail. In automotive development, it’s not often you get the chance to start with a clean sheet of paper. Our engineers and designers have made the very most of that opportunity.”
Design and dynamism are obvious characteristics of the new A-Class even at first glance, simply in the way it sits up to 18 centimetres closer to the road than its predecessor. The radical new design idiom that was so enthusiastically received upon its first appearance with the “Concept A-CLASS” has been rigorously applied for the series-production model. With their fresh interpretation of the classic two-box design, the Mercedes designers have created an emotive exterior with a pronounced sporty flair. “Applying the new dynamic style of Mercedes-Benz to the compact class was a challenge that we thoroughly enjoyed”, explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz. “The almost sculptural lines of the A-Class are very typical for Mercedes. The feature lines, particularly along the sides of the car, then give the A-Class structure and tautness.”
The objective when it came to the interior design was to complement the sporty look of the exterior. On top of this the car has a high-quality feel about it that is unique in this segment, achieved both through the design idiom as such and through the choice and combinations of the high-quality materials used. As seen in the Concept A-CLASS, there is an option allowing a smartphone to be fully integrated into the operating and display system. A special app makes it possible to use the full functionality of the iPhone® , and in due course also of other smartphones, in the car.
All trim surfaces feature an electroplated finish in “silver chrome”, giving them a genuine metallic surface with “cool touch” effect. “This is just one example of the way in which the quality of the A-Class’s interior is not defined by classic trim elements but by consistent design and by the specific materials used”, explains Hartmut Sinkwitz, Head of Interior Design. “The motto we used when designing the interior was ‘pure sportiness, newly interpreted’.”
Particular visual highlights include, for example, the air vents, which stand out like “sparkling jewels” (Sinkwitz), so underlining the exceptional quality of the interior. The sporty character of the vehicle is further emphasised by the integral seats (optional extra) in the front. The rear seat is similarly sporty in appearance and can accommodate up to three passengers.
As well as the basic specification, which can be individualised with a wide range of options, there is a choice of design and equipment lines that have been put together with the requirements of customers in mind: “Urban”, “Style” and “AMG Sport”.
The world premiere of the new A-Class (length/width/height: 4292/1780/ 1433 millimetres) will take place at the Geneva Motor Show (8 to 18 March 2012). It will be making its way to European dealers in September 2012.
Sporty exclusivity: the A-Class Sport offers a fresh definition of dynamism
For the first time, the performance specialists from AMG were involved in the development of the compact class from a very early stage. The result is the most dynamic version of the new model series – the A-Class Sport ‘engineered by AMG’, in which the visual affinity to the Concept A-CLASS is at its most evident – particularly in terms of the new diamond grille. The A-Class Sport features exclusive 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design with 235/40 R18 tyres all round and painted high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, together with red-painted brake callipers. These give an indication
of the particularly dynamic driving qualities of the A 250 Sport and the A 220 CDI Sport, which are differentiated, amongst other factors, by a special AMG-developed front axle and a suspension that has been configured to match.
Hints of red on the AMG front and rear aprons also serve to emphasise the expressive positioning of the new model. The contrast between black trim and additional accents in red continues in the interior: the contrasting decorative topstitching on the steering wheel and seats is in this same bright shade, as are the seat belts. The ambient lighting of the instruments and the highlight rings of the air vents are similarly red.
Drive system: new petrol and diesel-powered engines
A broad range of both petrol and diesel engines has something to suit every performance requirement, whilst also demonstrating the current state of the art in terms of efficiency: for the first time, a Mercedes-Benz will produce emissions of just 99 g of CO2 per kilometre.
The bandwidth of the new generation of petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres ranges from 90 kW (115 hp) in the A 180 and 115 kW (156 hp) in the A 200 through to 155 kW (211 hp) in the A 250. Common to all is the combination of direct injection and exhaust gas turbocharging, a more advanced combustion process and an extended stratification range for lean-burn operation that uses fast-acting injectors for the multiple injection of the fuel as well as on-demand multi-spark ignition. CAMTRONIC is an innovation that will be celebrating its world premiere in the 1.6-litre engine: adjusting the valve lift on the intake side restricts the amount of fresh mixture used in the partial load range, so reducing consumption.
The diesel engines also offer an impressively high level of efficiency and environmental compatibility, thanks to sophisticated injection technology and turbocharging. The A 180 CDI offers an output of 80 kW (109 hp) and a maximum torque of up to 250 Nm, while the A 200 CDI has a maximum output of 100 kW (136 hp) and torque that rises to 300 Nm. The A 220 CDI has a displacement of 2.2 litres, an output of 125 kW (170 hp) and torque of 350 Nm, delivering absolutely exceptional performance in the A-Class.
All engines in the new A-Class feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines can be combined either with the new six-speed manual transmission or, as an option, with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Further highlights: suspension, aerodynamics, safety
The dynamism promised by the design and drive system is realised by the suspension. A noticeably lower centre of gravity and a new 4-link rear axle provide the basis for this; and would also make the installation of 4MATIC all-wheel drive possible. Customers can choose between various suspension settings, among them the optional sports suspension with Direct-Steer system. The electromechanical steering in the A-Class has been completely redesigned, so that the electric motor for the power assistance now sits directly on the steering gear in the form of a compact and extremely precise Dual Pinion EPS.
Its exceptional aerodynamic performance, with a new record Cd value of 0.26, puts the A-Class at the top of its class. This is further helped by the standard roof spoiler, which hides all the unsightly aerials on the A-Class.
The A-Class is the only vehicle in its class to feature as standard a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system gives a
visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise braking response possible. This is initiated as soon as the driver steps firmly on the brake pedal.
The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system is now available for the first time in the A-Class. This innovation, which was premiered in the S-Class in 2002, thus makes its very first appearance in the compact class. Core features of PRE-SAFE® are reversible belt tensioning, the closing of side windows and sliding sunroof in case of critical lateral dynamics and adjustment of the fully electric front passenger seat with memory function to an ideal position for maximum effectiveness of the restraint systems. PRE-SAFE® is always activated in response to critical longitudinal and lateral dynamics and may also be triggered upon intervention by certain assistance functions.
The democratisation of safety also encompasses an array of other assistance systems which have been adopted into the A-Class from the larger model series. These include:
Keeping the new Mercedes A25 AMG hot hatch under wraps is proving to be more difficult than Mercedes-Benz had thought. One of the newest additions to the Mercedes AMG lineup, expected to be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, was spied in souther Germany with little camouflage.
The latest spy photos show substantial updates compared to the standard A-Class syling, the most noticable being the massive AMG wheels. There is also an updated front end with slightly larger air intakes and an updated bumper for the AMG exhausts.
According to Autocar, the mega hatch is expected to be four-wheel drive with its power coming from a heavily modified version of Merc’s current M271/M274 petrol engine.
Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, the German car maker’s Nottingham-based subsidiary that builds F1 engines, has been involved in the development of the 2.0-litre engine, which Merc insists will have a higher power output that the Audi’s 2.0-litre 335bhp unit doing duty in the RS3.
The new engine is also earmarked for the larger CLC25 AMG and CLC25 Shooting Brake AMG, both scheduled to be launched next year.
Mercedes A25 AMG photos have made their way to the web and along with the revealing photos comes new information about the upcoming entry level A25 AMG model. According to rumors, the AMG A-Class will be powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine with around 340 hp, destroying its main competition. What also sets the A25 apart is the all-wheel-drive system and double-clutch transmission that will be found on the compact model.
The extra features however, will come at a cost, you can expect the Mercedes A25 AMG to be priced above the competition that it is destroying as well, but you’re definitely getting what you pay for in this case. In a direct comparison to the standard 2013 A-Class, the Mercedes A25 AMG will feature new aerodynamics, a stiffer suspension system, bigger brakes and an upgraded interior. We’ll keep you posted with more details about the A25 AMG as soon as they become available. Photos via ZerCustoms.
The new B-Class represents a particularly family-oriented model from Mercedes-Benz. The comprehensive range of child seats for every age and weight group is typical of the standard of safety offered by Mercedes-Benz. The range features ISOFIX attachment points as standard, plus options including rear seats with integrated child seats (IKS), automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) on the front passenger seat and the comprehensive programme of Mercedes-tested child restraint systems: the BABY-SAFE plus infant seat, the DUO plus seat and the KIDFIX booster seat with adjustable backrest.
Unsecured children face a seven times greater risk of injury in an accident than children protected by restraint systems. With this in mind, Mercedes-Benz continually strives to improve the protection of children in cars. Accident research and accident statistics show that children require special restraint systems on account of their anatomy. The customary automatic seat belt does not represent the ideal means of securing children in cars. Varying requirements apply, according to children’s age group, height and weight. Mercedes-Benz thus offers different child seats tailored to the physical characteristics which define the respective age groups.
As an entry-level model there is the BABY-SAFE plus infant seat, which is suitable for children in the 0+ weight group (0-13 kg/0 to approx. 15 months). The DUO plus model, available with or without ACSR, is suitable for infants belonging to weight group I (9-18 kg/approx. 8 months to 4 years). The KIDFIX child seat, also available with or without ACSR, is ideal for weight groups II and III (15-36 kg/age approx. three and a half to twelve).
Mercedes-Benz innovation: automatic child seat recognition (ACSR)
Automatic child seat recognition is a special safety feature from Mercedes-Benz. It was developed especially for rear-facing infant seats in which babies and infants weighing up to 13 kg (approx. 15 months) sit on the front passenger seat, facing opposite to the direction of travel. The advantage of fitting the seat in this manner is that the backrest of the child seat forms an extensive buffer zone which braces the entire upper part of the body and the head in a frontal collision. As a result, the head remains in its customary position in relation to the upper part of the body, thus reducing the strain on the neck. As the front passenger airbag has to be deactivated when fitting a rear-facing infant seat, Mercedes-Benz developed an automatic child seat recognition system more than ten years ago. This is a passive system which detects when a child seat is fitted to the front passenger seat and automatically deactivates the vehicle’s front passenger airbag. This is particularly vital when an infant seat is fitted in rear-facing direction. An indicator lamp signals that the airbag is deactivated.
Integrated child seats
Another development from Mercedes-Benz is integrated child seats (IKS), a system which is permanently installed in the vehicle. IKS is optionally available for many model series. The child seats fold out of the rear bench seat at the touch of a button to provide safe and secure accommodation for two children aged 2 and above and weighing up to 36 kilograms (spanning the age group from roughly two to twelve). When the child seats are no longer required, they can simply be folded back into the rear bench seat.
In Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the occupant cell, seats, airbags and belts form a perfectly coordinated system. The child seat further enhances these safety functions, ensuring that youngsters are just as safe as adults in an accident. Mercedes-Benz child seats undergo the most rigorous laboratory and crash tests to verify their effectiveness. Beyond the mandatory tests according to stringent statutory regulations, the company also carries out its own tests, such as frontal impact at a speed of 64 km/h.
Child seats from Mercedes-Benz: the right system for every age group
Intelligent safety solutions
Children who are not secured correctly when a car is on the move are at extreme risk in the event of an accident. They are seven times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than children who are protected by appropriate restraint systems. In 2010, 49 children aged under 15 were killed in passenger cars involved in accidents in Germany and almost 10,000 were injured, according to information from the Federal Statistical Office. This represents a drop of around 50 percent in child fatalities in comparison to the beginning of the decade, while the number of children injured in passenger cars has fallen by around 30 percent over the same period.
A random check undertaken by the German ADAC automobile club in October 2011 revealed that around a third of children travelling in cars are still not secured correctly, however. Five percent of the children aged between six and twelve in the check were not even wearing a seat belt, while 20 percent were not sitting in a child seat appropriate to their age group. 28 percent of infants were not secured in the proper manner and three percent of those aged under 6 were travelling in vehicles without being secured in any manner whatsoever. In this spot sample the ADAC checked a total of 2325 children in 1569 vehicles outside schools and nurseries in eleven federal German states.
Only special seats afford optimum protection for small passengers
Another look at the relevant statistics confirms that the seat belt for adults does not represent the best means of securing children: the risk of injury in an accident stands at only eleven percent in a child seat, as compared to 25 percent when children are secured with a seat belt intended for adults.
This is attributable to children’s anatomy. Adults and children differ not only in terms of height and weight, but also with regard to physique and body proportions. The head of a new-born child accounts for around one quarter of its body weight, for example, while the corresponding figure for an adult is only around 18 percent. The bone structure also differs.
The logical consequence of these biological differences is that children require restraint systems which are tailored exactly to their special needs and their age, whereby different requirements apply among children according to age group, height and weight. Accordingly, Mercedes-Benz offers three removable child seats and one permanently installed system, ensuring the safety of children in all age groups. All the restraint systems meet Mercedes-Benz’s high safety standards.
BABY-SAFE plus
BABY-SAFE plus offers very young babies weighing up to 13 kilograms (approx. 15 months) optimum protection, an ideal fit and the best possible comfort thanks to snug padding in “DaimlerSquare” fabric design. The infant seat is fitted opposite to the direction of travel, in order to offer the best possible support for young babies’ sensitive cervical vertebrae. In the event of a collision, the seat stays the child’s entire body. This reduces localised stress substantially. High side bolsters and a particularly deep seat shell afford babies even better protection. In case of side impact, this entails major safety benefits.
The child is secured in the infant seat by means of an integrated 5-point belt. BABY-SAFE plus is attached to the vehicle using the three-point seat belt. The BABY-SAFE plus infant seat comes with the automatic child seat recognition (ACSR) as standard. When the infant seat is fixed to the front passenger seat of a vehicle which is also equipped with ACSR, the airbag electronics detect the fitted seat and deactivate the airbag on the front passenger side automatically. This is particularly important when child seats are fitted facing towards the rear. When the child seat is removed, the airbag is operational once again. The automatic child seat recognition system is not only convenient but also safe, as no buttons need to be pressed in order to deactivate the airbag. This also means there is no danger of forgetting to reactivate the front passenger airbag when the child seat is removed.
BABY-SAFE plus comes with a standard-fit sunroof which protects the young passengers from intensive sunlight.
DUO plus
The Mercedes-Benz child seat DUO plus is suitable for babies and young children weighing between nine and 18 kilograms (age range approx. 8 months to 4 years). DUO plus comes with ISOFIX as standard and is optionally available with automatic child seat recognition (ACSR). It is fitted in the direction of travel and can be attached either with the ISOFIX system or using a three-point seat belt. ISOFIX is an internationally standardised connection system between vehicle and child seat. DUO plus features two fastening hooks which are slotted into two metal eyelets between the seat surface and the vehicle seat backrest. DUO plus is additionally attached to the vehicle seat backrest by means of a so-called Top Tether in the upper area of the child seat. The child seat is then firmly connected to the vehicle’s body. The vehicle’s
seat belt is not required when the child seat is attached with ISOFIX and Top Tether. ISOFIX and Top Tether anchor points are required by law in new vehicles in Europe and the USA. ISOFIX and Top Tether attach the forward-facing child restraint system to the vehicle more effectively than when the child seat is secured using the seat belt, and thus offer better protection.
The child is secured in the seat by means of a harness belt system (five-point belt). The belt height adjustment feature allows the seat to “grow” with its user. The padding on the shoulder belts is designed to limit forces acting on the particularly vulnerable areas of the head and neck. It effectively reduces the strain on the head and neck when the impact of an accident exceeds a certain severity. To keep youngsters not only safe but also comfortable, the backrest shell of the DUO plus seat incorporates a shift feature which enables the seat to be inclined in a position suitable for a sleeping child. DUO plus comes in the “Limited Black” fabric design. This hard-wearing seat cover is removable and washable.
KIDFIX
The third model in Mercedes-Benz’s child seat range goes by the name of KIDFIX. This seat is ideal for children weighing between 15 and 36 kg (age range approx. three and a half to twelve). Child and seat are secured using the vehicle’s three-point seat belt. The raised seat position corrects the positioning of the belt passing over the pelvis and shoulders, adapting it to the child’s anatomy. The belt guides at the sides ensure that the lap belt does not slip into the area of the child’s abdomen. The KIDFIX seat can additionally be attached to the vehicle’s ISOFIX anchorage points, whereby the child continues to be secured by the vehicle’s seat belt. This has the advantage that the child seat is positioned correctly in the vehicle and, in particular, ensures that it does not fly around the interior and endanger the vehicle’s occupants when it is unoccupied.
KIDFIX incorporates a height-adjustable backrest. Apart from its comfort aspect, this backrest also ensures that the Mercedes KIDFIX child seat can be used for children up to the age of twelve. KIDFIX additional features a sitting and sleeping position and additional lateral support for head and body in the form of pronounced side bolsters and side head restraints. In the event of side impact, this design ensures that the child is not shaken too severely from side to side.
The automatic child seat recognition system is optionally available for fitting KIDFIX on the front passenger seat. The child seat can also be used without the system, however. In this case, the front passenger seat is to be moved into its rearmost position.
KIDFIX comes in the “Limited Black” fabric design. This hard-wearing seat cover is removable and washable.
Complete exchangeable covers in DaimlerSquare design are available for all child seat models. Replacement covers for the head and shoulder section of the DUO and for the head section of the KIDFIX come in flannel grey or chilli red. Replacement covers are available for all child seat models, either as exchangeable covers for the head section in flannel grey or chilli red or as complete exchangeable covers in “DaimlerSquare” design.
Integrated child seats (IKS)
The integrated child seats (IKS) form a system which is permanently installed in the vehicle, consisting of two child seats which fold out of the rear bench seat at the touch of a button to safely accommodate two children aged two and above and weighing up to 36 kilograms (age range approx. two to twelve). When the seats are no longer required, they can simply be folded away. The rear bench seat is then available for adults again. Integrated child seats are offered as optional extras for numerous model series.
Additional side head restraints from the Mercedes-Benz genuine accessories programme (IKS includes one side head restraint as standard) are recommendable for increased safety in the event of side impact. As the child is also able to rest its head to the side, these also provide for enhanced comfort. Integrated child seats can be upgraded with the separately available padded table into a safe restraint system for children aged 2 and above and weighing up to 18 kg (approx. 4 years of age). The padded table is secured by means of the vehicle’s three-point seat belt and offers protection in a manner tailored specifically to small children’s anatomy by providing a large surface area to brace the abdomen area.

As the growth process may vary greatly among children, the age ranges specified for the different child seat models represent only rough terms of reference. Different choices of seat may be appropriate in individual cases. In choosing a suitable seat, the child’s weight should thus always be the decisive factor and the weight range of the current child seat should always be fully exhausted before moving up to the next model. A vitally important factor is that the child’s head must never protrude beyond the backrest.
Legal requirements in the field of child safety
National and ECE regulations
Since 1 April 1993 it has been mandatory for children travelling in motor vehicles to be secured in child seats. Paragraph 21 (1a) of the German Road Traffic Ordinance stipulates the following in this connection: “Children up to the age of twelve who are shorter than 150 centimetres may only travel in motor vehicles in seats for which seat belts are mandatory if restraint devices are used for children which meet the requirements stipulated in Article 2 (1), letter c of directive 91/671/EEC of 16 December 1991 relating to the compulsory use of safety belts and the compulsory use of child restraint systems in motor vehicles (Official EC Journal no. L 373, p. 26), as amended by Article 1, no. 3 of directive 2003/20/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 8 April 2003 (Official EU Journal no. L 115, p. 63), and which are suitable for the child.”
Supplementary note: Use is thus mandatory for children who are shorter than 150 centimetres or under twelve years of age. This means that a twelve year-old child of only 140 centimetres in height or a ten year-old child of 155 centimetres in height does not have to use a child seat, as compliance with one of the two criteria is sufficient. Mercedes-Benz nevertheless recommends the use of child seats up to a height of 1.50 m, even if the child is twelve or older.
The German legislature has imposed sanctions for contraventions of the mandatory obligation for children to be secured correctly in their seats, with fines ranging from € 30 (child only secured with adult seat belt) to € 50 and one penalty point on the driver’s licence (several children not properly secured). Insurance companies also reserve the right to reduce compensation claims when child seats are not used or are used in an incorrect manner.
Officially approved child seats are identifiable by the orange-coloured ECE approval label which is obligatory on such seats. All the child seats in Mercedes-Benz’s programme comply with the latest safety standard, which is indicated by an approval number beginning with “04”. The label also specifies the weight range for which the child seat is suitable.
Since the amended version of Section 21 (1a) and (1b) of the German Road Traffic Ordinance entered into force on 1 March 2007, it has also been mandatory for children to travel in child seats on the rear seats of taxis. This obligation is restricted to a requirement for taxi drivers to provide child seats corresponding to ECE group I (mandatory) and II/III, however, with the possibility of accommodating one to two children. Parents themselves are required to provide infant seats for very small babies.
The applicable legal requirements for child seats in Europe are stipulated in ECE regulation no. 44, which classifies the use of child seats into different groups (see table). As stated above, the defined age groups serve only as general reference points and the child’s weight should always be the principal guiding factor.
ECE classifications according to weight and age
| ECE group | Body weight | Age |
| Group 0 | up to 10 kg | 0 to approx. 15 months |
| Group 0+ | up to 13 kg | 0 to approx. 18 months |
| Group I | 9 to 18 kg | approx. 8 months to 4 years |
| Group II | 15 to 25 kg | approx. 3.5 to 7 years |
| Group III | 22 to 36 kg | approx. 6 to 12 years |
The ECE regulation additionally classifies child seats according to different categories defining the possible use of the child seats in different vehicles:
ECE classification according to categories and form of use
| Category | Form of use |
| Universal | Use in all vehicles on front and rear seats which the operating instructions specify as being suitable for universal child seats, attachment with seat belt only or with ISOFIX and Top Tether. |
| Semi-universal | Use in certain specially approved vehicles only. In addition to ISOFIX, additional attachment via mount or other rotation-reducing fixing elements. |
| Vehicle-specific | Use in certain specially approved vehicles only. Seat attached according to manufacturer’s specifications. |
All the specifications relating to possible use are provided on the orange ECE approval label which is mandatory on every child seat. Apart from the category and weight class, these specifications also include the licensing country and approval number. The letter “E” in a circle guarantees compliance with the applicable statutory ECE regulations; the number after the “E” indicates the country in which the child seat has been licensed.
Only child restraint systems approved in accordance with ECE 44/04 are now permitted for sale in Germany. Child seats with ECE 44/03 approval may still be used, however.
Strict regulations on child safety in Germany’s neighbouring countries, too Germany’s neighbouring countries in Europe have regulations in place on children travelling in motor vehicles which are similar to those in Germany. Since 1 April 2010 a child seat has also been compulsory in Switzerland for children aged under 12 and up to a height of 150 cm. Depending on the child’s weight, the use of an infant seat, a child seat or a special seat cushion is required. In Austria, all children who are below 150 cm in height and under 14 years of age must be secured with a child restraint system or a child booster seat. Children who reach a height of 150 cm prior to their 14th birthday only require to be secured with a corresponding seat belt.
Since 1 January 2001 it has additionally been illegal to sell child car seats in Austria which do not comply with version 03 of the ECE 44 safety standard (ECE 44/03) at least. Anyone selling child seats which do not meet the required safety standards (including private individuals) faces hefty fines.
At the center of Mercedes-Benz’s presence at the Geneva Motor Show, running March 8 to 18, 2012, will be the world premiere of the new 2012 A-Class. Mercedes is opening up a whole new chapter in the compact segment: markedly emotive in design, with engines ranging from 80 kW (109 hp) to 155 kW (211 hp), and extremely efficient, with emissions from just 99 g/CO2/km. At the same time the new model reminds us that Mercedes-Benz safety in design is not a question of price – the standard specification includes, amongst other things, the radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system.
A special app makes it possible to use the full functionality of the iPhone®, and in due course also of other smartphones, in the car.
These give an indication of the particularly dynamic driving qualities of the A 250 Sport and the
A 220 CDI Sport, which are differentiated, amongst other factors, by a special AMG-developed front axle and a suspension that has been configured to match.
The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system gives a visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise braking response possible.
Safety systems include:
The official photos of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class have hit the web slightly ahead of schedule and thanks to Belgian website Autofans, we can show them to you. We have been covering spy photos of the A-Class for some time now, so we are happy to report that the final production car looks as good as we were hoping. Part of its good looks are due in part to the C-pillars curvature which gives it a more coupe like back.
In an interest of getting the photos out to you as quickly as possible, I will save the full article with complete details for later.
Just in time for the market launch of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class, BRABUS offers an exclusive tuning program for the new hatchback. There is no question that life for young families is full of surprises, believe me, I know. So the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the ideal companion – “For what’s coming up”. This is the campaign message with which Mercedes-Benz is launching its new premium sports tourer, which will be at dealerships beginning November 19th, under. The campaign will run until Christmas in print, online and on TV with focuses on the many safety systems that make the compact premium sports tourer the safest car in its class – with a particular emphasis on COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST. The new B-Class is the only vehicle in the compact car segment to feature this radar-based system, which helps to prevent rear-end collisions in all road and traffic conditions.
“The B-Class sets a new benchmark in its class for safety, spaciousness, comfort and efficiency, making it the ideal car for young families”, commented Anders Sundt Jensen, Head of Brand Communications for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “And this is what led us to develop a campaign that is specifically tailored to the everyday lives and experiences of this target group.”
“The most common accident in the B-Class: making a mess”
The commercial, 45-second and 30-second versions of which can be seen on TV between 7 November and 31 December, takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the significance of the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system in terms of road safety
The driver of a B‑Class is distracted by a boy with a blindfold over his eyes, who is running about on the pavement while eating an ice cream. Because of this, the driver fails to see another child crossing the road in front of him. Fortunately, nothing escapes the eagle eye of the safety system. It signals the alert in plenty of time and intervenes to provide extra braking assistance. All ends well – except that the boy with the ice cream runs into a pillar.
A similarly humorous treatment is used to communicate COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST in printed advertisements – also with the message: “The most common accident in the B-Class: making a mess”. Altogether, between 26 October and 23 December, six different advertisements will appear, using a series of four motifs. As well as further safety features, these have as their themes the flexible space and frugal fuel consumption of the new B-Class. The vehicle itself is shown in polar silver metallic paintwork against a backdrop representative of an urban street scene. In addition, the campaign includes an interactive web special, which has already been online since 25 August wherein users become acquainted with the highlights of the new B‑Class. The online activities are accompanied by three pre-roll ads on numerous platforms.
The new B-Class from Mercedes-Benz may be considered entry level but when you’re behind the wheel, it truly is anything but. It offers high-quality materials and finely structured surfaces, stylish details, precision workmanship and most importantly, spaciousness – the interior of the new B-Class will no doubt set the benchmark for all other compact vehicles.
Many features that have been reserved for the higher vehicle classes to date and that embody Mercedes-Benz’s special understanding of quality and aesthetics can now be found inside the 2012 B-Class. The dashboard is optionally available in ARTICO leather finish with stitching, for example. Four equipment packages (Chrome, Sports, Exclusive and Night package) enable individualisation according to personal tastes.
The interior: emotional design with sporty attributes
High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces, stylish details, precision workmanship and a new spaciousness – the interior of the B-Class defines a whole new benchmark in the compact segment. In the interior, the large, three-dimensional trim covering the entire dashboard first strikes the eye. The three large round vents in the middle and their uniquely designed cruciform nozzles add a sporty attribute to the interior’s emotional design idiom.
The display, which is available in two sizes with a diagonal or 147 or 178 millimetres, appears to hover over the vents. With its stylish design – the trim frame with galvanised finish contrasting with the piano black of the front panel – and slender lines, the colour display (TFT) is a highly attractive showpiece in the cockpit. The menus on the display are operated by means of rotary pushbuttons in the centre console. The “hovering” screen concept also serves two additional effects: the screen blends more harmoniously into its surroundings while at the same time conjuring up an impression of greater space in the centre of the instrument panel.
The 3-spoke steering wheel, which always features a matte chrome insert in the middle spoke, the instrument cluster with four analogue round dials and suspended pointers in 6 o’clock position and the seats with contrasting stitching underscore the sporty character.
The instrument panel features a mat, soiling-resistant surface with a pleasant, quality feel. The large trim situated centrally in the driver’s and front passenger’s field of vision is available in four variants covering a broad spectrum from modern through sporty to classic. Common to all versions is a high-class appeal combining an attractive look and feel with easy care and durability.
Instead of a high-gloss black finish, the trim on the basic model features the fine “Matrix” pattern on a piano lacquer-like background, for example. The trim is produced by means of the IMD technology (In-Mould Decoration), which involves spraying thermoplastic onto the backs of printed films in the mould. This results in mouldings with an excellent surface finish and quality appeal.
The trim in the Sports package is also produced by means of IMD. Here, the film is printed on both sides, creating an impression of even greater depth. On closer examination, the fascinating trim surfaces thus reveal further interesting details.
In the Exclusive package the trim is available in real matt walnut veneer.
The trim is optionally available in high-gloss black ash.
All the metallic surfaces in the interior are also genuine, thanks to electroplating. Various items, such as the outer ring on the round vents, the frame of the colour display and the upper shell of the shift lever, are finished in shimmering silk matt silver shadow. All silver surfaces possess the same lustre and the same surface quality, lending the interior a seamless appearance.
The high-quality impression is reinforced at night by the ambient lighting which is available in the Light and Sight package. A fibre-optic cable in the bottom edge of the trim diffuses gentle amber light. The scope of the ambient lighting also includes the front footwell lighting and the illuminated handle recesses on all doors.
While the design of the new B-Class continues to offer space in abundance, the line’s new dynamic character is directly apparent in its exterior dimensions. The most striking aspect is the reduced height: at 1557 millimetres, the new model crouches almost five centimetres lower on the road than its predecessor. The seat height in relation to the road has also been reduced (minus 86 mm). At the same time, this seat height also makes rolling movements substantially less noticeable.
In response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is more upright, however. At the same time, the headroom has been further improved. With maximum headroom of 1047 mm at the front (without sliding roof), the B-Class is among the most spacious cars in its segment in this discipline, too. The ergonomically expedient more upright sitting position in combination with a lowering of the vehicle’s floor at the rear leads to a segment-leading degree of legroom (976 mm).
The B-Class offers plenty of space for luggage, too. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 488 litres on the basic model. Even more important than this abstract volumetric measurement is the actual usable volume. The B-Class comes up trumps here with a luggage compartment width between the wheel arches of 1050 millimetres (40 mm more than its predecessor). Six crates of mineral water, each containing 12 0.7-litre bottles, or three medium-sized packing cases (measuring 440 x 345 x 470 mm) can be transported without encroaching on the space available in the second row of seats. As a particularly convenient feature, the loading sill has been lowered by five millimetres in comparison to the predecessor and is now at a height of 616 millimetres.
The rear seat backrest comes as standard in a folding variant with a 60:40 split. As an option, the B-Class is alternatively available with the so-called EASY-VARIO-PLUS system. This enables flexible reorganisation of the interior in next to no time. Features of the EASY-VARIO-PLUS system include separate fore/aft adjustment of the rear seats by up to 140 millimetres. The luggage capacity then increases from 488 to 666 litres.
The inclination of the rear seat backrest is also adjustable. In so-called cargo position, a washing machine can be transported with the tailgate closed without folding the backrest down, for example. Equally, nine crates of mineral water or six medium-sized packing cases fit under the tailgate in this position. With the EASY-VARIO-PLUS system, the backrest of the front passenger seat can additionally be folded down onto the seat cushion to enable the transportation of long objects.
The height-adjustable luggage compartment floor also offers added variability according to individual needs. It can be moved into two different positions with one hand and locked firmly into place. In the upper position the luggage compartment floor forms a continuous surface with the load sill, facilitating loading and unloading. The rear seat backrests can be folded forward to produce a level load surface. An additional 72 litres of stowage space is then available under the loading floor. On the basic version the floor is limited to the lower position, but is removable.
The deployment of the electric parking space and the resultant omission of the handbrake lever gives rise to key advantages regarding the design of the tunnel trim and the area of the centre armrest. A stowage compartment has been integrated in the resultant space under the hinged armrest, which is optionally available as a sliding version. The interfaces to the mobile communication devices are located here: AUX (option: UCI) and USB connection and the entire comfort telephony.
In conjunction with the DCT transmission, whereby the shift lever is relocated from the tunnel trim to the steering wheel as the DIRECT SELECT lever, additional stowage space becomes available, Other stowage facilities include the door pockets, which now securely accommodate 1.5-litre bottles on the driver’s and front passenger’s side. A special compartment for the reflective safety jacket which is required in many countries is also to be found here. There is an umbrella holder next to the driver’s and front passenger’s seat, and stowage compartments are incorporated on the left and right of the luggage compartment. Optional extras include fold-out stowage compartments under the driver’s and front passenger’s seat, folding tables on the front seat backrests and an insert for a double cup holder for the stowage compartment in the tunnel trim between the front seats.
Substantially more agile and efficient, but as comfortable and spacious as ever – the new B-Class from Mercedes-Benz is a winner on all fronts. The vehicle’s lower height and more upright seat position provide for a first impression that hints at the compact sports tourer’s dynamic credentials.
The second generation of the B-Class car heralds a new compact class era at Mercedes-Benz in terms of both design and technology. The entire drive programme is completely new: four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with direct injection and turbocharging, dual clutch transmission and manual transmission. Several new assistance systems support the driver.
“No model change in the history of Mercedes-Benz has ever seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop,” stresses Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Future B-Class customers will benefit from this quantum leap in terms of exemplary low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions combined with driving pleasure, plenty of space and the highest standard of safety that has ever been available in this class.”
Fuel consumption: up to 21 percent less than its predecessor
The fuel consumption of the new B-Class undercuts its predecessor by up to 21 percent. All the engines have been developed in-house. Both diesel models (B 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY) now run on 4.4 litres per 100 km (114 and 115 g CO2/km respectively ) – their predecessors required 5.2 litres per 100 km. The B 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY attains a CO2 value of 115 g/km with automatic transmission – an improvement of 21 percent on its predecessor (146 g/km). The petrol-engine variants have also made great strides: despite a substantial improvement in performance, the B 180 BlueEFFICIENCY and B 200 BlueEFFICIENCY now run on 5.9 litres per 100 km (137 and 138 g CO2/km respectively), undercutting their predecessors by up to twelve percent.
The new B-Class (length/width/height: 4359/1786/1557 millimetres) will be making its way to European dealers in November 2011.
The exterior design: perfect space in a most attractive guise
The new B-Class is a typical Mercedes sports tourer, offering plenty of space combined with impressive dynamic performance as a hatchback saloon. The characteristic lines of the exterior design indicate both of these attributes: front and rear sport a width-emphasizing design, with a wide, prominent grille and headlamps extending along the sides at the front while the rear end features a wide rear window, two-piece tail lights with horizontally offset meander and a large tailgate with low loading sill.
The new sportiness and the outstanding aerodynamics are particularly evident in the side line: the bonnet flows seamlessly into the A-pillar and the roof line descends sleekly to the striking roof spoiler. The roof features a swage line which lends the vehicle a longer appearance. The pronounced wheel arches offset by dynamic feature lines under the beltline are a sporty interpretation of the current design line from Mercedes-Benz. The bottom edge of the body features dynamic side skirts which lend the vehicle add a light touch to the vehicle’s appearance. Refined details such as the modern-look headlamps with the new spotlight element confirm the brand’s unmistakable premium credentials which shine through in the compact segment, too.
Outstanding aerodynamics: astounding cd value despite station wagon rear end
An outstanding drag coefficient of cd = 0.26 places the new B-Class at the forefront of its market segment. Apart from the aerodynamic exterior design, numerous optimisation measures on points of detail such as the air flow around the front wheels, the underbody design and the cooling air flow are also crucial contributory factors to this excellent aerodynamic performance. Patents are pending for innovative details such as the serrated wheel arch spoiler. With the optional ECO Technology package which will be available in due course, the B-Class is even on a par with the world-class aerodynamic credentials of the E-Class Coupé, attaining a drag coefficient of cd = 0.24 which is nothing short of sensational for a vehicle with a station wagon rear end.

The interior design: superior quality in a new dimension
High-quality materials and finely structured surfaces, stylish details, precision workmanship and a new spaciousness – the interior of the B-Class defines a whole new benchmark in the compact segment.
Many features have been the reserve of higher classes of vehicle to date and embody Mercedes-Benz’s special understanding of quality and aesthetics. The dashboard is optionally available in ARTICO leather finish with stitching, for example. Four equipment packages (Chrome, Sports, Exclusive and Night package) enable individualisation according to personal tastes.
In the interior, the large, three-dimensional trim covering the entire dashboard first strikes the eye. It is available in four variants, covering a broad spectrum from modern through sporty to classic. Common to all versions is a high-class appeal combining an attractive look and feel with easy care and durability.
The three large round vents in the middle and their uniquely designed cruciform nozzles add a sporty attribute to the interior’s emotional design idiom. The display, which is available in two sizes (147 and 178mm) appears to hover over the vents. With its stylish design – the trim frame with galvanised finish contrasting with the piano black of the front panel – and slender lines, the colour display (TFT) is a highly attractive feature in the cockpit.
The 3-spoke steering wheel, which always features a silver chrome insert in the middle spoke, the instrument cluster with four analogue round dials and suspended pointers in 6 o’clock position and the seats with contrasting stitching underscore the sporty character.
The drive: designed for maximum efficiency
The new B-Class features new petrol and diesel engines as well as new manual and automatic transmissions. All transmissions and engines have been developed in-house, with production taking place at the plants in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and -Hedelfingen, Rastatt/Baden, Gaggenau/Baden and Kölleda/Thuringia. The simultaneous development process enabled perfect coordination of engines and transmissions, e.g. with regard to implementation of the ECO start/stop function which features as standard on all B-Class models.
Common features of the new drive systems are the use of state-of-the-art technologies for maximum efficiency, very smooth running, high tractive power right from low revs, sustainability in terms of impending emissions standards and low weight. For the purposes of transverse installation the engines, all of which are turbocharged, and the two transmissions are very compactly designed, providing the B-Class with an exemplary small turning circle for a front-wheel drive vehicle of eleven metres. The engine and transmission suspension disposes of a four-point mounting system comprising engine mount, transmission mount and two self-aligning supports. This suspension system has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of the high-torque engines with regard to minimum noise levels. The hydraulic damping integrated in the transmission mount is a key contributory factor to the exceptionally high ride comfort.
The new four-cylinder petrol engines (internal designation M270) mark the launch of a completely new engine series. The combustion process is based on the third-generation Mercedes-Benz direct injection system which was introduced last year with the BlueDIRECT V6 and V8 engines. Its use in the B-Class marks this technology’s debut in the compact segment. The new four-cylinder engines have been designed for both transverse and longitudinal installation. In the new B-Class they are initially available with a displacement of 1.6 litres, as the B 180 rated at 90 kW (122 hp) and the B 200 with an output of 115 kW (156 hp). Their maximum torque of 200 and 250 Nm respectively is available from an engine speed of 1250 rpm.
The new four-cylinder diesel engine is a further development of the OM651 deployed in the C- to the S-Class, a common rail direct-injection engine of the third generation. With its displacement scaled down to 1.8 litres and numerous optimised points of detail, this is the first time that the compression-ignition engine has been mounted transversely in a Mercedes-Benz car. The B 180 CDI generates 80 kW (109 hp) of power, while the B 200 CDI has an output of 100 kW (136 hp). The maximum torque stands at 250 Nm from 1400 rpm for the 80 kW variant and 300 Nm from 1600 rpm for the 100 kW variant.

Another Mercedes-Benz premiere is the new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission in the B-Class. This transmission is extremely compact, extremely variable with regard to adaptation of the engine speed thanks to seven gears, features an electric oil pump for start/stop capability, shifts gear without any interruptions in tractive power and combines the comfort of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual transmission.
The new 6-speed manual transmission designed along similarly compact lines as a three-shaft transmission is a close relative of the DCT. Extremely easy gear shifting, low shift forces, low internal friction and a low weight are among its most important characteristics. [1]Germany. May differ from country to country
The chassis and suspension: refined sportiness now for the sports tourer, too “Fascinatingly agile” is the assessment of all test drivers who have put the new B-Class through its paces to date. Three factors are instrumental to the substantially enhanced dynamic performance in comparison to its predecessor, which does not come at the cost of any compromises on comfort: the lowered centre of gravity, the new four-link rear axle and the upgraded ESP®Electronic Stability Programme. A sports suspension is optionally available for further enhanced agility. The centre of gravity has been lowered by a further 20 mm and the suspension additionally features sports dampers with amplitude-selective damping and a Direct-Steer system to emphasize the car’s sporty character.
Steering: mechanical with electric assistance
The electromechanical steering of the B-Class has been redesigned. The electric motor of the servo assistance system is now located directly on the steering gear as a dual pinion EPS system, thereby optimising the package as a whole. A Direct-Steer system is available in combination with the sports package. The steering ratio becomes noticeably more direct at greater steering angles, enhancing the vehicle’s handling and agility substantially.
The electromechanical steering system makes an important contribution to the vehicle’s overall efficiency, as the steering assist function only requires energy when steering actually takes place.
New assistance and braking system reduces the risk of rear-end collisions
As a world first in the compact segment, the B-Class features a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist as standard, which lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system gives a visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response. This is initiated as soon as the driver emphatically operates the brake pedal.
In contrast to systems currently on the market in the compact class, the new COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST brake assist feature is not merely a system intended to minimise minor damage in urban traffic. Rather, this innovative solution is aimed at protecting motorists from typical rear-end collisions in dangerous traffic situations. Mercedes-Benz expects the new safety system to have a significant positive effect on accident statistics.
The democratisation of safety also encompasses an array of other assistance systems which have been adopted into the B-Class from the larger model series. These include:
Premiere in the compact class: PRE-SAFE® available for the first time
The PRE-SAFE®preventive occupant protection system which features in the B-Class is available for the first time in this vehicle category. This represents
a further step in the ongoing democratisation of this innovation, which was premiered in the S-Class in 2002. Core features of PRE-SAFE®are reversible belt tensioning, the closing of side windows and sliding sunroof in case of critical lateral dynamics and adjustment of the fully electric front passenger seat with memory function to an ideal position for maximum effectiveness of the restraint systems. PRE-SAFE®is always activated in response to critical longitudinal and lateral dynamics and may also be triggered upon intervention by certain assistance functions.
The scope of restraint facilities takes special account of the B-Class’s use as a family car. Great importance has been attached to the safety of the rear occupants. Belt tensioners, belt-force limiters and belt height adjusters come as standard on the outer seats. Rear sidebags are optionally available. Integrated child seats and automatic child seat recognition are available as in the predecessor. Driver and co-driver are provided with new pelvis bags which are able to cover the pelvis and the entire upper part of the body. For head protection, a windowbag is fitted as standard.
COMAND Online multimedia system with internet access
Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice control system, two navigation solutions tailored to different budgets, connection for mobile audio devices and an intuitive operating concept – the information and communication systems in the B-Class offers excellent user-friendliness and a superior level of functionality which has been the reserve of higher categories of vehicle to date. It is the new multimedia generation from Mercedes-Benz which delivers these standards. The operating concept featuring the turn/push control in front of the armrest and the control knob on the head unit is also familiar from other Mercedes model series.
The COMAND Online multimedia system offers internet access. Customers
can either surf the web as they wish while the car is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz app whose particularly fast page loading and simple operation make it suitable for use while driving. Integrated apps include Google™ Local Search and Weather and the facility for downloading a route which has previously been configured on a PC using Google Maps and transmitted to the car.
All set for the future: modular “ENERGY SPACE” concept
The modular “ENERGY SPACE” concept means that the new B-Class is already designed to accommodate versions with an alternative drive: appropriate interfaces in the body shell enable the main floor panel to be modified and a step to be produced for the versions with alternative drive. An underfloor compartment covering part of the area under the rear bench seat offers space for alternative energy accumulators.
Thanks to the official photos of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz B-Class that were released today, we are able to get an in-depth look at the model ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Being dubbed a compact sports tourer by Mercedes, the B-Class offers a much sleeker design with a drag coefficient of only .26, putting it at the head of its class. For the bit of geek in all of us, Mercedes has packed the 2012 B-Class with plenty of tech goodies including Adaptive Headlamp Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST (standard), Speed Limit Assist (speed limit sign recognition), Active Parking Assist, Brake HOLD function (standard with 7G-DCT), Hill Hold function, LINGUATRONIC, Reversing camera and DISTRONIC PLUS.
The ECO start/stop function is a standard on all B-Class models.

The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system outputs a visual and acoustic warning to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles, and prepares Brake Assist for the most precise possible braking response.
Premiere in the compact class: PRE-SAFE® available for the first tim
The PRE-SAFE®preventive occupant protection system which features in the B-Class is available for the first time in this vehicle category. This represents a further step in the ongoing democratisation of this innovation, which was premiered in the S-Class in 2002.
The scope of restraint facilities takes special account of the B-Class’ use as a family car.
Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice control system, two navigation solutions tailored to different budgets, connection for mobile audio devices and an intuitive operating concept – the information and communication systems in the
B-Class offers excellent user-friendliness and a superior level of functionality which has been the reserve of higher categories of vehicle to date. It is the new multimedia generation from Mercedes-Benz which delivers these standards. The operating concept featuring the turn/push control in front of the armrest and the control knob on the head unit is also familiar from other Mercedes model series.
The COMAND Online multimedia system offers internet access. Customers can either surf the web as they wish while the car is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz app whose particularly fast page loading and simple operation make it suitable for use while driving. Integrated apps include Google™ Local Search and Weather, and the facility for downloading a route which has previously been configured on a PC using Google Maps and transmitted to the car.
