VATH Shows What Kind of Power You Can Really Pull From theMercedes GLA 45 AMG

VATH offers a two-stage power upgrade for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline turbo engine found under GLA45 AMG’s hood

VATH offers a two-stage power upgrade for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline turbo engine found under GLA45 AMG’s hood. The first one can be considered pretty mild, but only in comparison with what the second boost brings. So, for those a little bit more faint-hearted, VATH is willing to boost power output to 395 hp from the standard 360 hp (this is the pre-facelift version).

This first stage comes with a price tag of 2,356 euros ($2,675) and helps move the GLA45 AMG as fast as 174 mph (280 km/h), but no info on the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) is provided, though.

The second stage brings a huge increase in power, but with it come all sorts of complications and extra costs. Still, if it gets you 446 hp from a two-liter engine on a compact crossover, we’d say it’s worth it.

A stainless steel down pipe costing 2,000 euros ($2,270) and a valve controlled exhaust system worth 3,439 euros ($3,900) are part of this extended package, but such power demands further modifications such as the 30 mm lowering of the suspension (452 euros or $513) and even a fuel cooler for 1,773 euros ($2,013) and gearbox oil cooler costing 1,249 euros ($1,418).

As for the exterior, VATH has gone gently but with great effect. There’s a carbon fiber package consisting of a front lip spoiler, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler. The V45 AMG (yes, VATH changes the names of the cars it modifies – good luck with the V-Class, then) rides on 20-inch wheels shod in winter tires (because, you know, winter is coming).

Mercedes Compacts Receive Upgrades

Mercedes-Benz compact sports cars are not only the most powerful but also the most agile models in their class

Mercedes-AMG has given its entry-level models, the CLA 45 4MATIC, CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake and GLA 45 4MATIC, a comprehensive update and as such is offering even more driving pleasure and emotional appeal than ever before in the compact car segment. The technical innovations and further individualised items of equipment are set to place the sporty powerhouses ahead of the competition once more. The vehicles are available to order with immediate effect and will be in dealerships from September. The CLA 45 4MATIC costs €56,673.75[1], the CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake €57,268.75 and the GLA 45 4MATIC €56,168.00 As already seen on the recently launched A 45 4MATIC, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine now produces 280 kW (381 hp), representing an increase of 15 kW (21 hp) over the preceding models. The maximum torque of the world’s most powerful series production four-cylinder engine has been increased by 25 Nm to 475 Nm. The revised gear-ratio steps of the 7-speed dual clutch transmission and the new DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, familiar from the Mercedes-AMG GT, lift overall performance to an even higher level. Driving dynamics can be further enhanced with optional extras in the guise of the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension and the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package.

The comprehensive modifications to the engine, transmission, suspension, electronics and equipment promise a further improvement to the highly dynamic driving experience: “Thanks to the optimally coordinated measures, our compact sports cars are not only the most powerful but also the most agile models in their class”, notes Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH. “They have all the prerequisites for enabling us to continue seamlessly with our success story in this highly competitive environment”.

The breathtaking performance plays a significant role here: the CLA 45 4MATIC now accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which is 0.4 seconds faster than its predecessors (Shooting Brake: 4.3 seconds, GLA: 4.4 seconds). At the same time it has been possible to retain the textbook consumption level on a par with the previous models: even the NEDC fuel consumption figures of the CLA 45 4MATIC and CLA 45 4MATIC Shooting Brake, from as low as 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres (corresponding to 161 g/km CO2), can be considered exemplary. The GLA 45 4MATIC consumes 7.4 l/100 km (corresponding to 172 g/km CO2).

Individual driving experiences: the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes

The engine, transmission and steering characteristics of the Mercedes-AMG compact models can be changed via rotary switch with the new, standard-fit AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes. There is a choice of four modes, namely “Comfort“, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual” or “Race” (in conjunction with AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension).

Another new feature is the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package (€2618), which sharpens the driving dynamics even further. One major component is the newly developed, mechanical front axle locking differential, which significantly improves traction when driving in a sporty style. The greatest advantages become apparent during powerful acceleration out of bends, where the locking differential allows maximum grip and high lateral acceleration. In addition, the compact sports models are stabilised even more effectively during load changes and in the high speed range.

The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package also includes the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension (€1237.60 when ordered individually): this comprises the additional “Race” transmission mode as well as two-stage adaptive adjustable damping. The system operates fully automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions.

Shorter ratios: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sport transmission

Another dominant factor in the agile and dynamic character of the power transfer is the standard-fit AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission. Thanks to the now shorter transmission ratios in 3rd to 7th gear, the driver experiences even more dynamic acceleration in all speed ranges. This is because together with optimised response and shift times, the closer ratio spread ensures better transitions when upshifting.

Also as standard, the new AMG compact sports cars transfer the driving power to all four wheels for optimum traction and maximum driving pleasure. The stepless torque distribution of the AMG Performance 4MATIC system ranges from 100 percent front-wheel drive through to a 50:50 split between the front and rear axles. A multiple-disc clutch integrated into the rear axle differential redirects the engine torque to the rear wheels as required within fractions of a second.

Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG Versus the Porsche Macan Turbo

Will the jacked-up red hatchback from Affalterbach put a beat-down on a genuine Porsche Turbo?

On this episode of Head 2 Head, Jonny Lieberman travels out to the wilds of the Anza Borrego desert with the goal of figuring out which small, sporty, pricey, German SUV is best: the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG or the Porsche Macan Turbo. But it’s not the off-road trails that Jonny’s interested in – the AMG may very well be allergic to dirt – but rather the serpentine road that climbs up, and then up some more. These two may look like SUVs, but they’re much closer to sports cars. Packing 400-horsepower, will the Porsche’s 45-horsepower advantage beat out the smaller, lighter, and still plenty powerful, GLA45? Or will the jacked-up red hatchback from Affalterbach put a beat-down on a genuine Porsche Turbo?

There’s only one way to find out!

2015 Mercedes GLA45 AMG

The GLA45 AMG also holds pole position with regard to driving dynamics: it accelerates from zero to 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual- clutch sports transmission, the GLA45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board at Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The response to the Concept GLA45 AMG during the world premiere at the Los Angeles International Auto Show has reaffirmed our decision to launch this new AMG model. Currently no segment is growing faster than that of compact SUVs. For Mercedes-AMG it is therefore logical to make a dynamic statement in this segment with the GLA45 AMG. Our new high-performance-SUV not only offers the world’s most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine, but also impressively low fuel consumption and emissions figures. Not least on account of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC four wheel drive, the GLA45 AMG is a true AMG when it comes to driving dynamics.”

Young target group: styling, dynamics and independence

In addition to the CLA45 AMG, the GLA45 AMG is the second vehicle with a four-cylinder turbo engine to appeal to a young target group. Customers take a great interest in styling, dynamics and independence – traits that are perfectly embodied in the new high-performance SUV from Affalterbach. Meeting a wide variety of customer desires has always been one of the strengths of Mercedes- AMG. The GLA45 AMG now expands the extensive high-performance SUV lineup to four models in the U.S. (GLA45 AMG, ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG, and G63 AMG). Mercedes-AMG thus offers the widest range of SUVs among all high-performance premium brands.

Hallmark AMG features: the world’s most powerful series-produced four- cylinder engine

Best in class: the GLA45 AMG engine fully lives up to this claim, as a look at the figures shows. The AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine is the most powerful series- production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world. It produces 355 hp of power and develops a peak torque of 332 lb-ft. A power output of 178 hp per liter puts the AMG high-performance turbo engine on a par with the world’s most powerful super sports cars.

Development of the high-performance turbo engine placed emphasis on a sustainable reduction in exhaust emissions. The AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers and an injection pressure of up to 2900psi. The combination of multiple fuel injection pulses and multiple spark ignition system improves fuel economy and thermodynamic efficiency, leading to low exhaust emissions. The injection system’s outstanding flexibility also ensures a high degree of freedom in terms of application. There are up to five injections per combustion cycle in the cold-start and warm-up phase, which is crucial for emissions.

Further highlights of the AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine:

  • Sandcast all-aluminum crankcase
  • Lightweight forged steel crankshaft
  • Forged pistons with friction-optimized piston rings
  • NANOSLIDE cylinder liner technology
  • Air-to-water intercooling system with separate cooling circuit
  • Alternator management
  • ECO start/stop function
  • Twin-scroll turbocharger and AMG sports exhaust system with variable vane

Mercedes-AMG addresses the basic challenge with regard to the throttle response of a small-capacity turbo engine by using a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum de-throttling of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. Twin-scroll technology provides a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure: utilization of the exhaust back-pressure, exhaust-gas temperature and exhaust-gas pulse has a positive impact. This results in a faster build-up of torque even at low engine speeds. A positive side-effect: fuel consumption and exhaust emissions also benefit from twin-scroll technology. With a maximum charge pressure of 26.1psi, the AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine leads the field on this front as well.

The AMG sports exhaust system in the GLA45 AMG features large pipe cross- sections and an automatically controlled viarable vane: this technology reconciles the two conflicting goals of a dynamic driving experience and hallmark Mercedes suitability for long-distance driving. The vane in the rear muffler is continuously adjusted under map control according to the driver’s performance needs, load condition and engine speed. The two rectangular chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating exhaust note, which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration. An AMG Performance exhaust system, also equipped with an exhaust vane, is available as an optional extra. Customers opting for this system will experience an even more appealing and distinctive engine sound.

Engine production – a tradition of hand-built excellence

The AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine is assembled purely by hand in accordance with the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine fitter’s signature also attests the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual-clutch sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual-clutch sports transmission in the GLA45 AMG features three distinct transmission modes, a double-declutching function dependent on the transmission mode and a RACE START function for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the dual-clutch transmission include spontaneous gear shifts without loss of tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy based on the AMG SPEEDSHIFT functions, extremely smooth gear shifts, and a high level of efficiency.

The shift times in manual mode “M” and in sport mode “S” are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car. Quick and precise retardation of the ignition and suppressing injection under full load lead to even faster gear shifts in “M” and “S” modes, with a more exciting exhaust sound. The transmission control fully utilizes the benefits of direct injection technology right up to the physical limits: the quicker engine response ensures that injection is suppressed with even more precision. The effect: the shift speed and an emotional sound experience make for a fascinating ride. Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving pleasure is the so-called “Momentary M mode” – as seen in the SLS AMG Black Series super sports car.

In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), smooth transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. In addition, the ECO start/stop function is active in “C” mode.

AMG Performance 4MATIC four wheel drive as standard

The GLA45 AMG comes with variable AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive as standard. In developing this four wheel-drive system, the focus was firmly on performance and dynamic spirit. The all-wheel-drive system transfers the engine power to the road optimally and provides perfect traction. It also elevates driving dynamics to the highest level.

The entire drive system boasts a weight-saving and compact design: the power take-off unit (PTU) is fully integrated into the 7-speed dual-clutch sports transmission and handles the power transfer to the rear drivetrain via a two- part propeller shaft. In the interests of favorable weight distribution, an electro- hydraulically controlled multiple-disc clutch is integral with the rear-axle differential. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this goes unnoticed by the driver. Power distribution is fully variable: during normal driving the GLA45 AMG uses front-wheel drive for optimal efficiency. Where needed, the variable four-wheel-drive system splits the torque between the front and rear axles at a ratio of up to 50:50 percent.

As with other AMG models, the Electronic Stability Program is configured as a three-stage ESP®. The GLA45 AMG comes with three transmission modes: “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” – enabling the driver to vary dynamic performance according to individual requirements at the push of a button. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist (torque vectoring) is likewise included as standard. During dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking interventions on the rear inside wheel create a defined yaw moment about the vertical axis. The effect: the GLA45 AMG turns in precisely and controllably at all times while unwelcome understeer is prevented.

AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system

One of the keys to agile handling is axle technology: for enhanced driving dynamics, the McPherson front axle on the GLA45 AMG is fitted with stiffer steering knuckles and new elastokinematics. The four-link rear axle has also been newly developed. Stability and precision of handling are enhanced by the optimized elastokinematics and the rigid connection between the subframe and the body. The AMG sports suspension with specially tuned spring/damper units and bigger anti-roll bars ensures high lateral acceleration and reduced body roll when driving fast on winding roads. An AMG performance suspension with firmer spring and damper tuning is available as an optional extra.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with specific, speed-dependent power assist ensures high steering precision and agility. The AMG high-performance braking system with vented, perforated brake discs all-round and gray-painted brake calipers delivers spontaneous and reliable deceleration. Red brake calipers are available as an optional extra.

Three attractive AMG alloy wheels to choose from

In standard specification the GLA45 AMG runs on 5-twin-spoke 19″ AMG alloy wheels painted titanium gray with high-sheen finish, mounted with tires of size 235/45 R 19. As an optional extra, customers can opt for larger 10-spoke 20″ AMG alloy wheels with tires of size 235/40 R 20 – these are available painted titanium gray with high-sheen finish or painted matte black with high- sheen rim flange.

Powerful and distinctive: sensual clarity with AMG character

The design of the GLA45 AMG exudes fascination on account of its powerful and distinctive character. As the powerful AMG top-of-the-line model of the GLA class, the high-performance compact SUV combines the hallmark sensual clarity of Mercedes-Benz as an expression of modern luxury with muscular elements exclusive to AMG. The AMG front fascia with front splitter and the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille provide athletic highlights – both are painted matte titanium gray. Completely new: the distinctive AMG logo at the side between the blades of the radiator grille. This will make all new AMG models easy to recognize in the future. Black flics (air deflector elements) above the large cooling air intakes at the sides pay homage to motor sport. Bi-xenon headlights come as standard.

When viewed from the side, the distinctive AMG alloy wheels in three design options certainly catch the eye. The side sill panels with matte titanium gray inserts, the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front fenders and the aluminum roof rails lend the GLA45 AMG a special touch. The rear end is dominated by the diffuser insert with titanium gray trim and the rectangular, chrome-plated trim of the twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with its variable exhaust vane.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Review – Video

The Mercedes GLA might be referred to as a small SUV, but really it looks more like a larger, more comfortable version of the A-Class

Our friends across the Atlantic took the mighty, yet mini, Mercedes GLA and GLA45 AMG on and off-road.  So what did the guys over at AutoExpress think of Mercedes’ newest SUV?  Watch the video and check out their review below.

The Mercedes GLA might be referred to as a small SUV, but really it looks more like a larger, more comfortable version of the A-Class. It’s taller than the hatchback it’s based on, but is actually much smaller than the Audi Q3.

The GLA’s comfortable and refined ride rights our main complaint about the fidgety and sometimes uncomfortable A-Class.

It’s not at the expense of handling either. There’s more bodyroll than the A-Class, but not enough to stop you having fun, and the steering is sharp too.

We’d go for the diesel versions, which do lose some refinement, but the improved running costs do sweeten the deal somewhat. The Automatic gearbox is pretty good, but you might want to think about going for the manual instead.

Although most customers will go for the standard petrol and diesel models and never take it off-road, for those wanting something extra it does have another couple of strings in its bow.

Later this year you’ll be able to buy a special off-road pack for the GLA , which adds a few basic off-loading features to help traverse muddy fields or bumpy dirt tracks.

If you prefer something quicker, AMG has worked its magic, too. Like the A45 and CLA 45, the GLA 45 AMG features a 355bhp 2.0 turbocharged engine. It’s a bit slower to 60 thanks to the higher weight, but in reality you’ll never really feel the difference.

In the end apart from a comfier ride and basic of-road ability, the Mercedes GLA is mainly about the extra space – the boot is 40% bigger than that of the A-Class. Forget was Mercedes say, think of it less as an SUV and more as an A-Class estate.

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG Review

If you're looking for an everyday car that offers something special in the way of performance, the Mercedes GLA45 AMG is perfect

Autocar’s Greg Kable recently had a chance to drive the all-new Mercedes GLA45 AMG.  This is what he had to say about the premium SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG, a storming four-wheel-drive hatchback-cum-SUV that completely blurs the lines in a junior premium-brand performance-car market. The GLA45 AMG has been conceived to appeal to a small group of buyers seeking genuine performance but without the compromises that traditionally come with it.

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG

What is it like?

Step inside the GLA45 AMG and you discover a suitably high quality interior. The driving position is set a little higher than in AMG’s other four-cylinder models, but with a ride height that is 25mm lower than standard GLA models you never feel you are perched up at true SUV height.

The engine delivers loads of low-to-mid-range flexibility in either of its three driving modes, with strong pull and excellent tractability from little more than 1500rpm. This makes the GLA45 AMG every bit as suited to the urban crawl as the open road.

The most impressive facet of the transversely mounted four-cylinder is felt from 4500rpm onwards, where it hardens in character and delivers truly explosive qualities on a heavily pegged throttle.

With a 0-62mph time of just 4.8sec, the GLA45 AMG is a considerable 0.7sec faster than the RS Q3. AMG’s latest model is also among a handful of four-cylinder-powered cars to boast a genuinely limited 155mph top speed.

But while its straight line performance is outstanding, it isn’t the most impressive factor about the GLA45 AMG. What grabbed our attention first time out was the added comfort AMG’s chassis engineers have managed to incorporate into its ride without adversely affecting its handling.

This is a very secure car. The chassis provides sufficient communication to allow you to carry high speeds into corners without any great trepidation or fear of the tail coming unstuck should you suddenly be required to lift off. It also delivers great drive on the exit as the four-wheel drive system loads up the rear axle to make best use of the traction on offer.

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG

Should I buy one?

If you are looking for a car for everyday use offering something special in the way of performance, you could do a lot worse than the GLA45 AMG. It offers a mesmerising combination of performance, handling and ride comfort. Mercedes-Benz likes to describe its latest offering as an SUV, however, it is more a high-riding hatchback with added styling elements to toughen up its appearance. As such, it lacks the space and overall versatility of true SUV rivals such as the Range Rover Evoque.

Hallmark AMG features: the world’s most powerful series-produced four cylinder engine

Best in class: the GLA45 AMG engine fully lives up to this claim, as a look at the figures shows. The AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world. It produces 355 hp of power and develops a peak torque of 332 lb-ft. A power output of 178 hp puts the AMG high-performance turbo engine on a par with the world’s most powerful super sports cars.

Development of the high-performance turbo engine placed emphasis on a sustainable reduction in particulate emissions. The AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers and an injection pressure of 200 bar. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel economy and significantly increases the thermodynamic efficiency, leading to low exhaust emissions. The injection system’s outstanding flexibility also ensures a high degree of freedom in terms of application. There are up to five injections per combustion cycle in the coldstart and warm-up phase, which is so crucial for emissions. One of the key factors for in-engine particulate reduction is a reduction of the individual injection quantities.

Further highlights of the AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine:

  • Gravity-die sand-cast all-aluminum crankcase
  • Weight-optimized crank mechanism with forged steel crankshaft
  • Forged pistons with friction-optimized piston rings
  • NANOSLIDE cylinder liner technology
  • Air-to-water intercooling system
  • Alternator management
  • ECO start/stop function

Twin-scroll turbocharger and AMG sports exhaust system with variable vane

With a maximum charge pressure of 26psi, the AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine leads the field on this front, too.

The AMG sports exhaust system in the GLA45 AMG features large pipe rosssections and an automatically controlled viarable vane: this technology reconciles the two conflicting goals of a dynamic driving experience and hallmark Mercedes suitability for long-distance driving.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission in the GLA45 AMG features three distinct transmission modes, a double-declutching function dependent on the transmission mode and a RACE START function for optimum acceleration.

Quick and precise retardation of the ignition and suppressing injection under full load lead to even faster gear shifts in “M” and “S” modes, with a more exciting sound. The transmission control fully utilizes the benefits of direct injection technology right up to the physical limits: the quicker engine response ensures that injection is suppressed with even more precision. The effect: the shift speed and an emotional sound experience make for a fascinating ride. Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving pleasure is the so-called “Momentary M mode” – as seen in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series super sports car.

In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), smooth transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. In addition, the ECO start/stop function is active in “C” mode.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC four wheel drive as standard

The GLA45 AMG comes with variable AMG 4MATIC four wheel drive as standard. In developing this four wheel-drive system, the focus was firmly on performance and dynamic spirit. The all-wheel-drive system transfers the engine power to the road optimally and provides perfect traction – regardless of the weather conditions. It also elevates driving dynamics to the highest level.

The entire drive system boasts a weight-saving and compact design: the power take-off unit (PTU) is fully integrated into the 7-speed sports transmission and handles the power transfer to the rear drivetrain. A two-part propeller shaft sends the power of the engine to the rear axle as well. In the interests of favorable weight distribution, an electro-hydraulically controlled multiple-disc clutch is integral with the rear-axle differential. Ahydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary.

Typically for AMG, the Electronic Stability Program is configured as a threestage ESP®. The GLA45 AMG comes with three transmission modes: “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” – enabling the driver to vary dynamic performance according to individual requirements at the push of a button. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is likewise included as standard.

Powerful and distinctive: sensual clarity with AMG character

The design of the GLA45 AMG exudes fascination on account of its powerful and distinctive character. As the powerful AMG top-of-the-line model of the GLA class, the high-performance SUV combines the hallmark sensual clarity of Mercedes-Benz as an expression of modern luxury with muscular elements exclusive to AMG. The AMG front fascia with front splitter and the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille provide athletic highlights – both are painted matte titanium gray. Completely new: the distinctive AMG lettering at the side between the louvers of the radiator grille.

The rear end is dominated by the diffuser insert with titanium gray trim and the rectangular, chrome-plated trim of the twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

Official Press Release

At the Los Angeles International Auto Show (20 November to 1 December 2013), Mercedes-AMG will be presenting its outlook on a compact, high-performance SUV. The Concept GLA 45 AMG features an excitingly bold, distinctive design and is powered by the most muscular four-cylinder engine in series production anywhere in the world: its AMG 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with an output of 265 kW (360 hp) and maximum torque of 450 newton metres offers unrivalled performance in conjunction with low fuel consumption.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “With the Concept GLA 45 AMG, we are setting a stake firmly in the ground of the strongly growing market segment of compact SUVs. Our customers – a young target group who set great store by styling, dynamism and independence – can now start looking forward to a dynamic high-performance car. The most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system add up to make the Concept GLA 45 AMG a unique proposition.”

A seven in front of the comma in terms of fuel consumption per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) and compliance with the EU 6 emissions standard go to show that superb performance at Mercedes-AMG does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in under five seconds demonstrates the dynamism that is so typical of the brand. Thanks to a combination of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the drive configuration of the Concept GLA 45 AMG impresses with its sporty yet also efficient performance.

Powerful and muscular: breathtaking design

Stunning engineering is combined with some breathtaking styling features by Mercedes-AMG: the Concept GLA 45 AMG has a powerful and muscular presence on the road. This is due in considerable part to the AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with 255/35 R 21 tyres. Painted matt black with a red rim flange, they certainly attract attention. They are complemented by the AMG wheel hub covers with centre lock-look, plus an AMG high-performance braking system with red brake callipers.

The large front splitter in high-gloss black on the AMG front apron, the black flics (air deflectors) with additional flics, together with the large cooling air intakes, serve to underline the long tradition of motorsport at Mercedes-AMG. The motor racing look is further reinforced by the start number “45” on the doors and the distinctive AMG logo at the upper edge of the windscreen. Further design elements exclusive to AMG include the “twin-blade” radiator grille in silver chrome, the side sill panels with high-gloss black inserts, the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the front wings, the high-gloss black roof rails and the large rear aerofoil.

Sporty wraps and red highlights

The sporty silver grey/red foil wrap on the bonnet, vehicle sides, C-pillar and rear end makes a memorable impression and is complemented by the red highlights on the radiator grille, exterior mirrors, diffuser insert and AMG rear aerofoil. The rear view is dominated by the diffuser insert with black trim element and by the twin-tailpipe design of the two rectangular, high-gloss black tailpipe trims of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Spied Testing in Dubai

Video and photos of the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class driving the streets of Dubai

Mercedes-Benz showed off it’s brand new compact premium-class SUV concept at the “Auto Shanghai” motor show in April and now we are seeing more and more spy photos of the Mercedes GLA in production form emerge as it’s September debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show draws near.

The most recent spy photos and video show Mercedes’ answer to the BMW X1, testing under the sun on the streets of Dubai.  The last time we saw the compact crossover, it was sporting taxi gear and winding it’s way around the Nürburgring.

Beneath the not so flattering black camouflage, it looks as though the GLA may have lost some of the sleeker, sporty compact crossover  styling and lines that we originally saw from the concept and so hoped we would see in production – we will likely see the lines of the GLA concept come back on the AMG model.

The GLA’s engine range will be similar to that of the A-Class which means we will see several 4-cylinder units with outputs of up to 211 HP (155 kW) with an AMG model that will likely be powered by a direct-injected 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine that will produce around 354 HP (260 kW).

Check out the photo gallery below for a compilation of GLA spy photos as well as the GLA Concept photos for comparison sake.

Mercedes GLA45 AMG Spied Testing

The Mercedes GLA45 AMG will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show with a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine

The Mercedes GLA 45 AMG is expected to make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September and will likely be powered by the A45 AMG Engine.  In the mean time, we have the latest spy photos of the GLA 45 AMG testing near the Nürburgring this week.

If powered by the Mercedes A45 AMG’s engine, it will be a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 360 HP (265 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. An AMG SPEED SHIFT DCT seven-speed sports transmission with race start and double declutching functions, as well as three driving programs will send power to the 4MATIC system.

Additional upgrades of the standard GLA model will include a lowered suspension, more aggressive body kit and the standard AMG interior upgrades.

The standard GLA version will go on sale by the end of the year, while the AMG model will arrive early on in 2014.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Spied Cold Weather Testing

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is an entry-level has been spied cold weather testing in Sweden near the Artctic Circle recently

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is an entry-level has been spied cold weather testing in Sweden near the Artctic Circle recently.

The all-new GLA will be based on the Mercedes’ modular MFA platform that is also found under the new A-Class and the more recently unveiled CLA-Class.  The compact GLA will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions.

The engine lineup will more than likely be very similar to both the A- and B-Class and will be topped by an AMG version with a four-cylinder, 2.0-literturbocharged engine delivering approximately 335 HP (246 kW), though unconfirmed.

Thanks to the GLA’s sporty appearance that is heavily influenced by the A-Class, the new GLA will go head to head with the BMW X1. Based on the photos we’ve seen, we expect to see sweptback headlights, roof rails, tailgate-mounted spoiler, a prominent front grille and an higher ride height.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA is scheduled to come out next year in Europe, followed by a 2014 launch in the U.S.

Mercedes GLA 45 AMG First Spy Photos

The GLA45 AMG will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops approximately 335 HP (246 kW)

Last month we brought you photos of Mercedes’ answer to the BMW X1, in the form of a petite SUV aptly named the GLA.

Today, our good friends at GMotors captured the first photos of the new crossover’s AMG variant, the GLA 45 AMG while testing in Spain.

As was previously reported, the GLA will ride on the MFA platform that currently underpins the A- and B-Class. The AMG prototype in the photos reveals larger air intakes in the front bumper, bigger wheels, bigger brakes and, like in many other AMG prototypes in their early stages, one single exhaust on each side.

The AMG variant with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops approximately 335 HP (246 kW).

Thanks to Andrus and GMotors for the photos.
