More space, more power, more goose bumps – the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a whole new dimension of driving and expands the AMG model line-up. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and forms a direct link to the legendary and highly successful SLS and AMG GT models. A further vehicle developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG, it unites unique design, excellent comfort and phenomenal sports car technology with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and greater usability. The consistent expansion of the AMG GT family by the four-door coupé therefore opens up the sports car segment to those customers seeking a vehicle they can use every day without having to give up the unique performance of Mercedes-AMG.

The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a very special driving experience across the board and ensures a confident and refined presence in all areas of life, with exceptional performance and a top speed of 315 km/h. Modern, powerful in-line 6 and V8 engines with a power spectrum ranging from 320 kW (435 hp) to 470 kW (639 hp) unleash completely new driving experiences and pair compelling performance figures with contemporary efficiency.

“There are enough cars out there that are a moving compromise. The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé certainly is not. There’s plenty of space in the back – and plenty of performance in the front,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, we are adding another great option to our portfolio. It now offers more variety and choice than ever.”

Mercedes-AMG G 63 – new generation of the performance off-road vehicle

The G 63 underscores its unique position among performance off-road vehicles with its powerful drive, all-new AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG-specific driving programmes and new interior with optional Widescreen Cockpit. The basis for the hallmark AMG Driving Performance both on- and off-road is the 430 kW (585 hp) 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, the rear-biased all-wheel drive (40:60) with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and adaptive damping. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds is a clear demonstration of its outstanding performance credentials. The reinterpretation of the unmistakeable design sets characteristic accents with the exclusive AMG radiator grille, flared wheel arches, distinctive side pipes on the exhaust system and wheels measuring up to 22 inches.

“With Mercedes-Benz Cars, the customer has got the choice,” says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “We want to offer a tempting solution for every customer: from city car to off-road legend, from AMG performance to Maybach luxury, whether you are a geek or a family dad or a businesswoman.”

Mercedes-Benz C-Class – new engine line-up for the bestseller

Mercedes-Benz’s most successful model range starts its fifth year of production with an extensive array of upgrades, including stylish revisions to the exterior and interior design. The electronic architecture is completely new. The customer sees this in the user experience, with an optional fully digital instrument display and multimedia systems with tailor made information and music. The assistance systems are now on the same level as those in the S-Class.

One highlight of technology and efficiency is the pre-production version of the new diesel plug-in hybrids in the C- and E-Class. It marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has paired an externally chargeable hybrid system with a diesel engine. The union of the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine with the latest-generation 9-speed 9G-TRONIC hybrid transmission sets a notable technology highlight. 90 kW of electrical power, an additional 400 Nm of electric torque and electric range of around 50 km in the NEDC will raise the experience of local mobility with zero emissions to a new level.

With four body variants, three power levels and two types of powertrain, the C-Class is Mercedes-AMG’s most multi-faceted and successful model range. Extensive upgrades make the entry-level models, C 43 4MATIC Saloon (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 209 g/km[2] ) and Estate (fuel consumption combined: 9.4 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 214 g/km2), now even more attractive. The AMG grille featuring the twin-blade design, the powerfully sculpted front skirt and the new rear skirt with round double end pipes provide visual enhancement to the new C 43 models and position them even more expressively. The interior benefits from the optional fully digital cockpit with exclusive AMG instruments and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now produces 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the potent drivetrain combines agile performance with long-distance comfort.

“The new C-Class is available with most of the comfort attributes of the S-Class, all of its intelligent drive features – including its automated driving functions – and even more driving fun,” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “We believe plug-in hybrids are more than a bridging technology. With our modular Mercedes engine portfolio, we can create a perfect electrified solution for every application. We will have more than 50 electrified vehicle variants by 2022.”

smart EQ fortwo und forfour – innovative, intelligent and electric

Mercedes-Benz Cars is starting its electric offensive precisely where it is most urgently needed – in the city. The aim is the electrification of everyday life – across the board. Presented in Geneva alongside smart EQ were the “smart EQ control” apps and the 22 kW rapid charger.

A-Class – the benchmarks in the compact class

The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is as young and dynamic as ever, but more grown up and comfortable than ever before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class and revolutionises design from the inside. Technologically, the new A-Class sets itself at the very forefront not only with MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience – but also with a range of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class, enabling semi-automated driving in certain situations for the first time.

The new S 65 AMG: the ultimate in Driving Performance – The Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG is the only high-performance automobile from a German premium manufacturer to have a twelve-cylinder engine, and it sets the benchmark as the most powerful vehicle in the segment. With 463 kW (630 hp) and 1,000 Nm of torque, the V12 biturbo unit delivers an incredibly refined driving experience. By reducing fuel consumption by 2.4 l/100 km (NEDC combined) and fulfilling the EU6 emissions standard, the new V12 sedan is fit for the future. Power transmission is via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox. Its wide ratio spread enables considerably lower engine revving than the preceding five-speed automatic, thus contributing to the reduction in fuel consumption.

The active curve tilting function MAGIC BODY CONTROL marks a world premiere. “It allows the S-Class Coupé to lean into a curve in a similar manner to a motorcycle rider, reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the occupants,” says Prof. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “On country roads in particular, this means more driving fun and comfort for our customers.” Further technical innovations in the elegant two-door include the head-up display and the newly developed touchpad.

The coupé is available initially with a 4,663 cm3 V8 biturbo engine. In the S 500 Coupé, the efficient power unit generates 335 kW (455 hp) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. Like the S-Class Sedan, the Coupé is available with a host of new assistance systems that make driving even safer and more comfortable. The “Intelligent Drive” systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian recognition, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot for partially autonomous driving, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus.

Gilded Mercedes-Benz S-Class Fit for a King

Built for China's ultra wealthy, the Carlsson CS50 Versailles is an over the top golden carraige

Can you ever have to much gold?  A question I’m asking myself as I go through the photo gallery of the newly revealed Carlsson CS50 Versailles.  Based on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Carlsson covered the car in more than 1,000 sheets of gold leaf – a process that took over 200 man-hours to complete.  The gold and refinements did not stop there however, Carlsson also covered 278 interior components with gold leaf as well, perfectly complimenting the champagne and dark brown Nappa Leather.

In total, there is around 12,000 Euros worth of gold leaf on the interior and exterior of the S-Class.  Is it to much, did Carlsson take the S-Class meant to invoke the beauty of King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles too far.  Considering that 10 of the 25 limited edition CS50 Versailles editions have already been spoken for, the answer must be no – it’s the perfect amount of gold.

Check out the photo gallery below and see the gilded ride for yourself, or learn more about the Carlsson CS50 Versailles by expanding the press release below.

Visually the 250-km/h (155-mph) off-roader dazzles with its spectacular BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody version and BRABUS “Platinum Edition” 23-inch forged wheels custom-developed for this model.

The ability to always be in touch and the desire to be able to enjoy entertainment anywhere while having the option to communicate with the entire world: multimedia and connectivity are increasingly gaining importance in cars as well. BRABUS was one of the first companies to stylishly integrate computers and telecommunications into cars with a full range of functionalities.

Since that time the technology has advanced at a rapid pace. In the new BRABUS 800 “iBusiness” based on the Mercedes G 65 an exclusive and extremely powerful super car now celebrates its world premiere. The all-wheel-drive car provides its owners with the capability to communicate with the entire world or enjoy multimedia content such as music, movies or games using an iPad mini, Mac mini, iPod touch and Apple TV.

While the heart of the system, the Mac Mini computer, is housed together with the Apple TV module and the power amp rather inconspicuously in custom-designed consoles in the trunk, the modifications in the rear compartment of the G-Class are immediately apparent: The production rear-seat bench is replaced by individual seats that offer any conceivable creature comfort including an integrated seat ventilation system.

A tailor-made BRABUS center console was installed between the two rear seats, and extends all the way from the front seats to the upper edge of the rear seat backrests. The upper section features a refrigerator for refreshments, the main part of the console houses numerous components of the “iBusiness” multimedia concept. These include not only a folding and swiveling table for each rear seat, but also docking stations with built-in chargers for the iPad mini and the iPod touch, as well as space for the concealed storage of keyboard and mouse plus USB ports for connecting to the Mac mini.

A special console was also developed for the stylish integration of the 15.6-inch LCD monitor into the headliner made of the finest leather and Alcantara. It serves as the main screen for the entire multimedia system, and can be deployed and retracted via the BRABUS Remote app specifically developed for the “iBusiness” package. The app is also used for powering on the Mac mini.

The rear-seat passengers can enjoy all benefits of the BRABUS multimedia system at any time. Both computers, the iPad Mini and the Mac mini mainframe, allow working just like at home or the office. The connection to the internet is established via a high-speed modem and a WLAN. Because the BRABUS electronics specialists integrated the iPad mini into the vehicle’s on-board electronics system, the tablet computer also controls the various functions of the multimedia equipment.

Internet television from all over the world is displayed by the Apple TV module on the main screen. The DVD changer of the standard COMAND system was also integrated into the multimedia options. The high-end sound system is tailored to the G-Class interior and offers a wide range of first-class listening pleasures. The iPod touch in the rear console serves as the program source and can store more than 14,000 titles.

Rear-seat passengers can also enjoy the amenities of the BRABUS “iBusiness” concept in a particularly pleasant environment at night. To this end, the interior designers have installed dimmable ambiance lighting between the seats and in the roof. The roof-mounted console also features gimbaled LED reading lights.

The BRABUS upholstery shop created a black all-leather interior for the BRABUS 800 “iBusiness” show car. It continues the quilted pattern of the exclusive BRABUS leather floor on the seat center surfaces and the center sections of the doors. The interior is rounded off with red contrasting stitching that matches the pinstripes on the wheels.

Of course BRABUS also offers interiors in any other color. There are virtually no limits for the color scheme of the especially soft and breathable BRABUS Mastik leather and the classy Alcantara. Just as unlimited are the variations offered by the many leather upholstery designs and exclusive wood or carbon-fiber inlays. BRABUS can fulfill requests for special colors and designs, including wood inlays in an especially exclusive yachting design.

Stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo and other attractive accessories such as high-quality velour floor mats and aluminum BRABUS pedals and door-lock pins are also part of the BRABUS 800 “iBusiness” interior appointments.

The custom interior is accompanied by sheer high performance: The 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo engine of the G 65 is upgraded with the BRABUS 800 engine conversion. For this purpose the BRABUS engine specialists have developed a high-tech twin turbo system. The exhaust manifolds with integrated turbo housings and high-performance turbochargers were custom-developed for the G 65. They not only further optimize throttle response, but produce a higher boost pressure than the production turbos. Four water-to-air intercoolers located beneath the carbon-fiber BRABUS hood scoop ensure lower charge-air temperatures. This benefits power delivery and durability even under extreme conditions such as, for example, in the desert. Two air filter boxes positioned in the front fenders ensure an optimized supply of breathing air for the engine.

On the exhaust side there is a BRABUS stainless-steel exhaust system with free-flow metal catalysts and sound management via a controlled butterfly valve. The high-tech exhaust system is operated with a button on the steering wheel. The V 12 engine can either whisper discreetly in “Coming Home” mode or trumpet news of its power to the world in the “Sport” position. Visually the sport exhaust captivates with two dual tailpipes – either with standard or black chrome finish – exiting in front of the rear wheels on either side.

Special mapping for the engine management system coordinates the perfect interaction of all high-performance components while ensuring compliance with EURO V emissions standards. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner MOTUL.

The BRABUS 800 engine produces 588 kW / 800 hp (788 bhp) of power at a low 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), on tap already from 2,100 rpm. In the car peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

Mercedes G65 AMG Brabus 800 iBusiness Engine

Mercedes G65 AMG Brabus 800 iBusiness

The performance the car delivers speaks volumes: In combination with the seven-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive, the BRABUS 800 WIDESTAR sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph). Without the limiter the high-performance off-roader would be capable of reaching 270 km/h (167 mph).

With the WIDESTAR widebody version the designers lend the classic G-Class body in the current facelift version an even more distinctive and dynamic profile. The front of the off-roader is marked by powerful fender flares. But that’s not all: The BRABUS front spoiler, which also fits any G 63 or G 65 without WIDESTAR conversion, attaches to the production bumper and features LED daytime running lights on the left and right-hand side. The illumination of the BRABUS logos integrated into both sides of the aerodynamic-enhancement component is activated by pulling on a door handle or with the keyless remote.

Another important factor in the spectacular appearance of the front is the new lighting concept with dark BRABUS xenon headlights. The precise-fit inserts, which replace the production headlights of the G model, feature special integrated LED daytime running lights that also serve as turn signals. This renders the production turn signals on top of the fenders obsolete. Their openings are closed with custom covers made of clear-coated carbon fiber that add another sporty highlight.

The new look for the front is rounded off with the radiator grille with integrated BRABUS logo and an additional faceplate below the radiator grille. The BRABUS components for the front are of course also available for all G 65 models without WIDESTAR conversion. The BRABUS rear bumper with two LED backup and fog lights each and the BRABUS roof spoiler with integrated LED brake light are also suitable for universal use.

The front and rear fender flares add 12 centimeters (4.7 in) to the width of the body. Integrated LEDs illuminate the running boards of the G-Class when a door handle is pulled or the keyless remote is activated. Integrated air outlets and BRABUS door attachment components add further striking highlights in the side view.

The wider wheel arches make room for BRABUS “Platinum Edition” forged wheels with a diameter of 23 inches. The use of state-of-the-art manufacturing technology makes these wheels an ideal combination of low weight and maximum strength. Three BRABUS “Platinum Edition” size 11Jx23 wheels are available for the G-Class: Monoblock E evo, Monoblock F and Monoblock R. All are mounted with size 305/35 R 23 high-performance tires from BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli or YOKOHAMA. The BRABUS 800 “iBusiness” show car on display at the Geneva Motor Show is equipped with BRABUS Monoblock F “Platinum Edition” 11Jx23 wheels sporting a black mirror finish and red pinstripes on the rim flange that echo the interior design.

Another BRABUS high-tech feature is the Ride Control suspension developed together with technology partner BILSTEIN. An aluminum button sporting the BRABUS logo in the center console allows drivers to choose manually between two setups for the electronically adjustable shock absorbers: In comfort position the off-roader offers exemplary ride comfort that even surpasses that of the production car. At higher speeds and for spirited driving, choosing the firmer sport setup offers more dynamic handling and even further increased safety reserves.

In addition, the BRABUS Ride Control suspension features automatic damper adjustment. If the vehicle sensor systems detect that certain parameters such as speed, lateral acceleration and steering angle might lead to a critical handling situation, the suspension is automatically switched to the firmer sport setting in the blink of an eye. The sportier damper setup further improves the handling stability of the all-wheel-drive car. The CAN control unit also detects when the driver reverts to a more moderate driving style. The system then automatically switches the shock absorbers back to the comfort position.

Fuel economy, CO2 emissions and efficiency class: BRABUS 800 “iBusiness” based on G 65: city 22.7 l/100 km, highway 13.7 l/100 km, combined: 17.0 l/100 km. CO2 emissions, combined: 397 g/km, efficiency class G.

Mercedes-Benz at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

It's a busy week for Mercedes-Benz so stay tuned as we bring you all the details of your favorite Mercedes models

The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG celebrated its world premiere at a Mercedes-Benz press conference this week, while at the same time the entire extensively facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class family made its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Not to be forgotten is the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, with the world’s best drag coefficient, and the Grand Edition Viano AVANTGARDE special model that have also made their first motor show appearance.

It is a busy week for Mercedes-Benz so stay tuned throughout the week as we bring you all the details of your favorite Mercedes-Benz models.

Mercedes-Benz CLA in a League of Its Own

The Mercedes CLA is a car that doesn't confuse mid‑range with mediocrity - Its powerful design underscores the sporty side of Mercedes

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA is well on its way to establishing a new segment, leading the way with it’s aerodynamic body (Cd value of 0.22 for the BlueEFFICIENCY Edition), avant-garde coupé design and 4MATIC all-wheel drive (optional). As a four-door coupé it follows the design ideas of the CLS, a design concept which has initiated a fair share of imitators since its debut in 2003. The new CLA features a radar-based braking system (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) that comes standard and is able to warn drivers of an obstacle from a speed of only 4 mph and can initiate precision braking when the driver steps on the brake pedal.

“The resonance created by the Concept Style Coupé was overwhelming. By far the most frequent comment heard was: ‘please put this car into series production’ And that’s exactly what we’re doing now”, said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The CLA is a car that does not confuse mid‑range with mediocrity. Its powerful design underscores the sporty side of the Mercedes-Benz brand.”

In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA is available with high-torque turbo engines rated at up to 155 kW (211 hp), sports suspension and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The technical highlights of this new design icon include a new world record in aerodynamics for series production automobiles (Cd value: 0.22) and numerous driving assistance systems, including the further-developed COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST.

This radar-based assistance system provides the possibly distracted driver with visual and acoustic warnings of identified obstacles and prepares the adaptive Brake Assist system for precision braking. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver steps emphatically on the brake pedal. When an impending danger of collision is identified, the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST system calculates the precise braking force ideally needed to avoid an accident and makes the best possible use of any distance remaining. As a new feature, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST affords protection from typical rear-end collisions in dangerous traffic situations in the CLA from a speed of only 7 km/h (previously: above 30 km/h).

Five lines and packages which vary greatly in character are available to individualise the striking compact mid-range coupé (length/width/height: 4630/1777/1437 millimetres). In keeping with the digital lifestyle of the CLA’s social media-savvy target group, smartphones can additionally be fully integrated into the vehicle’s display and operating system.

The CLA Edition 1 will only be available for twelve months. Among the exclusive equipment features of this model, which can be powered by any of the engine versions, the NEON ART interior with leather upholstery and black DINAMICA microfibre with yellow contrasting topstitching is worthy of mention.

The style rebel: exterior design

Its breathtakingly sporty proportions and powerfully dynamic design idiom, with its interplay between concave and convex surfaces give this four-door coupé its unmistakable look.

The vehicle’s striking features include the bonnet embedded in the front end with powerdomes and the diamond radiator grille. The light modules and LEDs behind the headlamp cover glass have been arranged in such a way as to create the characteristic “flare effect” for the daytime driving lights and indicators. This light signet defines the car’s energetic appearance and shapes a new Mercedes face.

Numerous details indicate that on a design level the CLA represents a further development of the modern classic Mercedes-Benz CLS. Three prominent lines give structure to the vehicle when viewed from the side: the front structural edge over the wings flows towards the rear end in a characteristic dropping line. Another, more sinewy line spans the shoulder muscle above the rear axle, while the third feature line extends in a sweeping curve from the front wheel towards the rear. Together, these lines lend depth and dynamism to the side profile.

The width-emphasizing rear end radiates power and athleticism, featuring an interplay between convex and concave surfaces and edges. The gently sloping roof contour and the pronounced, hallmark curvature of the rear window provide the CLA with a coupé-style character from the rear, too. The athletic impression from the rear results from the drawn-in C-pillars in conjunction with the shoulder muscle over the rear wheel arch linings. The tail lights are framed by the muscular lines of the shoulders which extend into the rear end, the horizontal orientation of the lights emphasizing the rear’s powerful and aesthetic breadth. The light functions feature an arrow-style arrangement.

A large panoramic sliding sunroof is optionally available. This sunroof consists of a fixed polycarbonate cover at the front, a moving element made of mineral crystal and side trims to match the glass look.

“Cool touch” effect: the interior

The exterior’s progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle. The interior additionally derives a very special quality feel from the design idiom, the selection of high-quality materials and the available combinations of materials. All trim surfaces are galvanised, resulting in a metallic finish.

The instrument panel incorporates five round vents. The outer rings of the round vents have a high-quality electroplated finish. The airflow direction is governed by a galvanised insert that reveals a meticulous attention to detail. The free-standing display screen features a black piano-lacquer-look front panel and, in combination with COMAND Online a flush-fitting silver frame.

The CLA is fitted with integral seats in the front and rear, underscoring its sporty character. The rear bench seat emphasises the outer seats (2+1‑seater). Coloured contrasting stitching is available, according to the selected interior appointment options. A fibre-optic cable in the opening between head restraint and backrest is optionally available as part of the ambient lighting.

Sleek as they come: new record Cd value

With a Cd value of 0.23, the CLA sets a new benchmark – both within the Mercedes-Benz model range and among all production vehicles. The drag area, Cd x A – which is crucial to consumption at speeds above 60 km/h – also leads the field, at 0.51 m². The CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, which is due to hit the streets in June and can be ordered now, even manages to better these top values with its Cd figure of 0.22, and when it comes to the drag area, Cd x A, the four-door coupé crosses a magical line: it is just 0.49 m2.

The good air flow characteristics, which are a major contributory factor to the vehicle’s low fuel consumption in everyday conditions, result from numerous aerodynamic optimisation measures. These include a low A-pillar shoulder with adapted A-pillar geometry, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, streamlined rear section, wheels designed for low aerodynamic drag and serrated wheel spoilers on the front and rear wheel arches.

Extensive underbody panelling, additional panelling in the middle area of the rear axle and an aerodynamically optimised rear silencer followed by a diffuser improve the flow of air under the underbody.

When it comes to aeroacoustics too, i.e. noise level comfort, the four-door coupé is also at the top of its game.

Smart safety: advanced assistance systems

Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the CLA and reduce the driver’s workload. Standard-fit features for the coupé include ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect the CLA from collisions from a speed of only 7 km/h (previously: above 30 km/h).

This feature combines with DISTRONIC PLUS to become COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, incorporating an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slow or stationary vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 30 km/h and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 20 km/h.

Established assistance systems, such as the Lane Tracking package with Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist or Adaptive Highbeam Assist, are also available for the CLA. Active Parking Assist (optional) enables automatic parking in lengthways and crossways parking spaces.

Designed for dynamism: the chassis and suspension

The chassis of the CLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension, featuring three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are virtually independent of one another. A CLA-specific feature is the flexible decoupling of the rear axle carrier, which benefits ride comfort. Wheel carriers and spring links are made of aluminium, in order to reduce unsprung masses. Two chassis and suspension set-ups are available: the comfort suspension and the optional sports suspension for sporty yet comfortable handling. The latter entails lowering of the body by 15 mm (front) and 10 mm (rear).

Irrespective of the selected chassis, all CLA variants come with the Direct Steer system. This electromechanical power steering offers improved feedback to the driver in comparison to conventional systems and makes an important contribution towards overall efficiency, as the steering assist function only requires energy when the steering wheel is actually turned. Additionally it enables various steering assistance functions which are activated by the ESP® control unit. These include countersteering in case of oversteering, corrective steering when braking on road surfaces offering different levels of grip (split-friction braking), mitigation of the extent to which the front-wheel drive influences the steering and compensation for crosswind and road gradients.

High tractive power reserves and outstanding agility: 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The CLA from Mercedes-Benz is optionally available with a new generation of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system featuring fully variable torque distribution. Similar to the other 4MATIC versions, this completely new development boasts high tractive power reserves and outstanding agility combined with superlative driving safety and energy efficiency.

The components of the new 4MATIC include the power take-off to the rear axle which is integrated in the 7G-DCT automated dual clutch transmission and the rear-axle gear with integrated, electrohydraulically controlled multi-disk clutch. This set-up enables fully variable distribution of the drive torque between front and rear axle. Additional benefits of this design are a lower system weight compared with what is available from the competition as well as high efficiency.

All set for the future: powerful and efficient drive

Ahead of the scheduled introduction of the Euro 6 regulation, all petrol-engine variants and the top diesel variant of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA already meet the future requirements of this European exhaust emissions standard.

The petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres cover an output spectrum ranging from 90 kW (122 hp) in the CLA 180 through 115 kW (156 hp) in the CLA 200 to 155 kW (211 hp) in the CLA 250. The two diesel engines combine dynamic low-end torque with the utmost efficiency: the CLA 200 CDI generates 100 kW (136 hp), with a maximum torque of 300 Nm (available from September 2013). The CLA 220 CDI has a displacement of 2.2 litres and delivers 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm of torque, while emitting only 109 g of CO2 per kilometre.

All engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission, which reconciles comfort and sportiness in inimitable fashion.

Hamann Hawk Roadster at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

The Hamann SLS has an updated body kit, extra horsepower, suspension tweaks and customized suede interior

A powerful engine packed into an exclusive body design with matte-red lacquer from HAMANN Motorsport. After the Gran-Turismo-Coupé, HAMANN is now also customising the Roadster version of this top-class sports car. The result is a genuine treat for both the eyes and the ears: Upthrust-reducing aerodynamic components, powerful performance enhancements, stainless-steel exhaust systems with a sporty sound, striking 21-inch light-metal rims and deluxe interior modifications bring an individual character to this series vehicle.

Already in its basis version, the SLS provides a significant engine output. But the HAMANN engine department puts some additional power reserves into the V8 engine. Part of the power enhancement is the high-performance exhaust system made out of stainless steel. In combination with a sports air filter, this system also renders the earthy and powerful sound of the 6.2 litre aggregate. The components are precisely adjusted with the help of a new engine characteristic map for motor electronics. With a top performance of 636 hp / 468 kW and a maximum torque of 680 Nm at 4,850 r.p.m, the HAMANN engine exactly meets the wishes of its sports ambitious clientele. The performance enhanced wing door automobile provides first class measures. In race start mode, the two-seater accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.6 seconds and with a top speed of 320 km/h, the HAMANN HAWK Roadster also surpasses the basis model.

The superior driving performance is matched with a striking appearance and aerodynamics tested in the wind tunnel. The HAMANN HAWK Roadster front apron replaces the serial bumper and due to its shape it reduces the uplifting forces at the front axle. Larger air inlets in connection with a new LED lights unit give the two-seater an even more dynamic look. In addition, the enlarged air inlets provide better access for the engine’s increased need for fresh air. Subsequently, the air is drawn out of new bonnet made of checkered flag carbon. Striking wing, 60mm on each front side and 70mm on each rear side, already render an impressive appearance even while the car has not started moving yet. Side skirts make the Convertible look additionally lower and more stretched and underline the rims. The new rear apron with the diffuser enhances the air flow under the bottom of the car and provides room for four enormous end pipes each measuring 90 mm in diameter.

In order to perfectly combine comfort and control, HAMANN uses the single-part, especially light forged wheels “Unique Forged Anodized” in 21 inches. These are fitted in 9Jx21 with tyres measuring 245/30 ZR 21 at the front and 12.5Jx21 with tyres measuring 345/25 ZR 21 at the rear axle.

The coilover kit has been especially refined for the HAMANN HAWK Roadster. Equipped with four height-adjustable dampers and four progressively wound springs, the centre of gravity can be lowered by up to 30 millimetres.

HAMANN entirely redesigns the interior of the SLS and turns it into a VIP lounge with motorsports characteristics. Most delicate leather and ultra-suede, applications and embroideries replace the serial interior. HAMANN additionally adorns the air inlets, door sill protectors and centre console with red coloured carbon. Black anodized aluminium pedals render a comfortable grip. The technical highlight of the new interior is the new steering wheel which has been ergonomically redesigned.
