A Mercedes-Benz Icon Reaches an Epic Milestone

500,000th model of the legendary Mercedes‑Benz G-Class rolled off the production line

The production anniversary of a brand icon: the 500,000th model of the legendary Mercedes‑Benz G-Class rolled off the production line today in Graz, Austria. The veteran off-roader, which has won many awards as the “best off-road vehicle in the world”, has been writing its very own success story since 1979. The G-Class owes its cult status among its growing fan community primarily to its unique combination of distinctive design and outstanding off-road capability. The anniversary vehicle recalls the origins of the off-road icon: the model for the vintage look of the one-off is the 280 GE from the 1986 model year, from which the 500,000th descendant incorporates iconic design elements such as the exterior colour and the seat pattern. The G-Class is approaching its 45th production anniversary, which is coming up in 2024. It will also remain true to itself in the associated model update. The motto will continue to be: technical development with unchanged character.

“On the occasion of the 500,000th anniversary, we would like to thank both our loyal customers and long-time fans as well as our employees and our production partner Magna Steyr in Graz. We are proud of this figure, which also underscores the exclusivity of the G-Class. After all, four whole decades have led to this significant anniversary. This makes the G-Class anything but a mass product. With the all-electric G-Class launching in 2024, which will push the boundaries of the off-road sector, we look forward with anticipation to the future of the off-road icon.”

Unique production anniversary vehicle: An original, inspired by the original

The model that Mercedes-Benz is presenting to commemorate the production anniversary is a flawless one‑off. The 500,000th “G” is inspired by a G-Class from the early years. It features some particularly striking design features from its historic predecessor, which has long enjoyed the status of an automotive classic. The historic paint in agave green, one of the first paint colours available for the G-Class, is a real eye-catcher. Among the more subtle details of the exterior design are the turn signals. Their shape has remained the same to this day, but not their colour: on the anniversary vehicle, the covers of the direction indicators feature a shade of orange no longer used today, i.e., the look typical of 1970s automobiles. The historic spare wheel cover with the Mercedes star, which is significantly larger than on today’s models, the brand badge on the rear door and the 5-spoke sterling silver wheel also evoke the early days of the G-Class. The interior of the 500,000th vehicle is also inspired by the 280 GE. For example, the middle section of the seat is upholstered in the chequered fabric typical of the time, while the grab handle on the passenger side features the lettering “No. 500,000” in agave green. The “Schöckl” door sill trim, on the other hand, is an integral part of the G manufaktur’s current customisation range. This also applies to the door knob with logo embossing: in the logo package available today, however, this is available in silver — in the anniversary model it is black.

The top model of luxury SUVs has been setting new standards since 1979

Alongside the S-Class and the E-Class, the G-Class is one of the longest-produced and longest-established passenger car model series in Mercedes-Benz history. Even with the first G model, the development team designed a vehicle that combined superior off-road capability with on-road driving comfort and Mercedes‑typical high safety standards. At the market launch in spring 1979, customers could choose between four engine variants with a power range from 53 kW/72 hp to 110 kW/150 hp. Both short-wheelbase cabriolets and short- or long-wheelbase station wagons were available.

Over the course of the past four decades, the G-Class has established itself from a pure commercial vehicle to a lifestyle object. However, it has retained its distinctive character and typical appearance to this day. All‑wheel drive, differential locks with 100 per cent locking effect and the robust ladder frame have been part of the G-Class since the beginning. Iconic design elements such as the round headlamps, the exposed spare wheel on the side-hinged rear door and the clear, angular silhouette ensure that the off-road vehicle icon is still recognisable today as a direct heir of the first G model.

In terms of performance and technology, the G-Class has been continuously developed over the years. The greatest technological leap in the model’s history came with the new run of the G-Class, which celebrated its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show in 2018: headlamps with LED technology, modern driver assistance systems, a fundamentally redesigned, modern interior and a new chassis provide more safety and comfort as well as improved driving characteristics both on and off the road.

The motto of the current generation launched in 2018 is “Stronger than Time” and will apply more than ever in the future: with the all-electric G-Class, which will roll off the production line in 2024 alongside the combustion engine models, the off-road vehicle icon is taking a step into the future. The all-electric version, which remains fully in the design tradition of the series, will set new standards with its off-road capabilities: four individually controlled electric motors close to the wheels enable unique driving characteristics, while the batteries integrated in the ladder frame ensure a low centre of gravity. The electric motors provide their maximum torque practically with the first revolution and deliver tremendous power, controllability and responsiveness. All of this makes the off-road icon optimally prepared for the adventures of the future.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Rare and Powerful 500 GE V8 SUV as a Classic Cultural Asset

The 500 GE V8 was the harbinger of high-end off-roaders in the automotive luxury class, and well-maintained models can now receive the coveted H registration plate

Mercedes-Benz has recently announced that from 2023, the Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8, which was launched 30 years ago and is known as the ‘Luxury Off-Roader,’ can be classified as historic cultural assets. This means that well-maintained 500 GE V8s can be granted a coveted H registration plate if they pass the classic car appraisal. The 500 GE V8 was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1993 and was equipped with a proven eight-cylinder engine from the brand’s passenger car range. The engine was capable of producing 177 kW (240 hp) and 375 newton metres of torque from a displacement of 4973 cubic centimetres.

The 500 GE V8 is available exclusively as a long-wheelbase station wagon. Only 446 vehicles are produced from then until 1994. Optional extras: Stainless Steel Package with front brush bar bracket, running board left and right and spare wheel cover. Side view from the left. In 1993, the 500 GE V8 was priced at DM 178,250, which was expensive compared to other models. However, the 500 GE V8 was equipped with Bridgestone tyres of the new dimension 265/70 R 16 H on aluminum wheels, the only off-road tyres approved for speeds up to 210 km/h. The brake system was also configured for this level of driving performance, and the suspension was designed with the emphasis on comfort. The drivetrain, with its permanent four-wheel drive, remained unchanged except for the front differential lock, which was not offered in this model. The car was available exclusively as a Station Wagon with a long wheelbase (2850 millimetres).

The interior of the 500 GE V8 was redesigned with a black leather interior with contrasting elements, medium grey seat and backrest cushions, and door panels that were trimmed. Walnut veneer was used for the wood trim of the centre console, parts of the handbrake lever, the two transmission selector levers, and trim elements on the doors. A special amethyst blue metallic paint finish extended to the bumpers, wing flares, and mirror housings. Automatic transmission, air conditioning, cruise control, a sliding sunroof, leather steering wheel, and heated seats were always on board.

Mercedes-Benz produced only 446 units of the 500 GE V8, which was a limited edition because the M-117 engines available were scarce. The 500 GE V8 was expensive compared to other G-Class models, including the G 320 with a six-cylinder engine, which cost DM 88,500, while a 500 SE in the 140-series S-Class, with the M 119 engine, was available for DM 129,030. The G-Class is by far the longest-produced model series from Mercedes-Benz, launched in 1979, and the forefather of all SUVs sporting the three-pointed star. It is designed and constructed for tough everyday use, for example by foresters, farmers, in the military, or on unpaved tracks worldwide.

Around 80% of all the G-Class vehicles ever produced are still in existence, which is clear proof of the outstanding quality of this off-roader. The G-Class combines superior off-road capability with full on-road capability and safety. All-wheel drive and differential locks with 100 percent effect are as much a part of this vehicle as the rigid ladder-type frame.

In conclusion, the 500 GE V8 was a unique model in the G-Class, which has gained the status of a cultural asset due to its rarity and exclusivity. The 500 GE V8 was the harbinger of high-end off-roaders in the automotive luxury class, and well-maintained models can now receive the coveted H registration plate. Mercedes-Benz is proud of its history and heritage, and the 500 GE V8 is a testament to its commitment to producing high-quality, luxury vehicles that stand the test of time.

Mercedes-Benz and Moncler Join Forces to Unveil PROJECT MONDO G

ROJECT MONDO G is a unique collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler,

PROJECT MONDO G is a unique collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler, which has resulted in the creation of an exceptional art piece that was unveiled at the Moncler “The Art of Genius” show during London Fashion Week. The collaboration has combined the iconic features of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class off-roader with Moncler’s puffer jacket, resulting in a sculptural object that invites people to experience the transformation of a functional object into a design piece. The art piece is 4.6m long, 2.8m high, 3.4m wide (with wheels) and weighs 2.5 tons. The rough patina on the art piece refers to functionality and practicality, while the high-gloss reflective surfaces underpin the claim to luxury. The PROJECT MONDO G campaign, “Art of Imagination,” showcases the ability of the G-Class and Moncler puffer jacket to withstand the harshest conditions. The campaign was directed and photographed by Thibaut Grevet. Mercedes-Benz and Moncler’s passion for innovation, concise design language and a first-mover approach to cross-cultural collaborations, has resulted in a collaboration that offers an unexpected experience of both brands.

Mercedes-Benz and Moncler share a passion for innovation, concise design language and a first-mover approach to cross-cultural collaborations. These values and attributes define both partners, who now came together to showcase the creative opportunities and where the merging of the two brands’ worlds can take you. The theme “Art of Imagination” is an inspirational message to dream big and to explore their own firsts: breaking new ground, put the impossible in reach, and discover without limits. The collaborative art piece PROJECT MONDO G marks Moncler’s first automotive partnership.

“We are very excited about collaborating with Moncler to create another ‘X-factor brand moment’. At Mercedes-Benz, we are committed to engage in culture and society. Our co-creation with Moncler offers an unexpected experience of both brands. This debut collaboration with Moncler opens new horizons and a potential of opportunities for more news to come soon.”
Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for Marketing & Sales

PROJECT MONDO G: Iconic art
The exclusively for the collaboration of Mercedes-Benz and Moncler designed art piece merges the characteristic features of the iconic Mercedes-Benz off-roader G-Class with the style-defining Moncler puffer jacket. Building a spectacular contrast with the angular design of the G-Class and the soft, flowing lines of the quilted textile. Unmistakable and inimitable with functionality at their core, both functional products have developed into lifestyle items of luxurious value over the past decades. The fusion of opposites gives rise to a sculptural object: PROJECT MONDO G invites to experience the transformation of a formerly pure utility focused object into a design. Its impressive dimensions are: 4.6 m length, 2.8 m height, 3.4 m width (with wheels) and 2.5 tons weight.

A closer look reveals further characteristic features that have a concrete connection to the original products and additionally create exciting contrasts: the rough patina is the visible trace of use, which refer to functionality and practicality. This forms the visual counterpoint to the perfect, high-gloss reflective surfaces that underpin the claim to luxury. Nor is it by chance that the PROJECT MONDO G bears the huge zipper, another deliberately striking and eye-catching element. The zipper is a practical reference to the versatility and variability of both products, vehicle and jacket.

“The collaboration with Moncler inspired us to create a real iconic sculpture on wheels – a very bold design statement: our PROJECT MONDO G. Based on our design philosophy Sensual Purity, this art piece merges extremely contrasting forms and surfaces: spacecraft shiny materials with a used patina look; strong geometry of the G-Class with organic forms of Moncler puffer jackets. Two strong luxury brands offer an extraordinary new experience by combining automotive and fashion world united in one piece. Because of over-dimensional and exaggerated language of forms it’s polarizing art to set new impulses and trends.”
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Mercedes-Benz Group AG

Born in 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class roots are embedded in the exploration of tough terrains and in the industrial or municipal sector. Mercedes-Benz entered uncharted territory in 1979 with the G-Class. The off‑road vehicle was designed on the one hand as a means of transport with extreme off-road capabilities and an emphasis on leisure, and on the other for tough everyday use, for example, in the industrial or municipal sector. A continuous advancement process began shortly after its market launch. That is the key to the lasting success of the G – an icon of its own.

The “Art of Imagination” campaign
PROJECT MONDO G is the hero showcar of the campaign that accompanies the Mercedes-Benz and Moncler co-creation with social media, out of home (OOH) and PR assets for a broad global activation. The visualization stages an otherworldly winter landscape inspired by the main themes of outdoor durability and limitless discovery opportunities with the off-roader G-Class as basis of PROJECT MONDO G and the puffer jacket of Moncler. The look and feel is an imaginary universe with low gravity that interprets the art piece with fashionable moments by models wearing conceptual looks designed with Moncler collection items. The campaign set design mirrors the art piece reveal at the “The Art of Genius” show presenting the ability of the G-Class and the Moncler puffer jacket to withstand even in the harshest conditions. The campaign was lensed by the recognized director and photographer Thibaut Grevet.

Mercedes G-Class Electric slyly teased by Daimler

Daimler has teased the G-Class Electric for the first time

Daimler has teased the G-Class Electric for the first time, TopElectricSUV.com has reported.

During the Mercedes-Benz Strategy Update 2020 conference on the 6th of October, Daimler conducted a comprehensive presentation covering its electrification strategy. The company said it would electrify every type of Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle sub-brand, be it AMG, Maybach or even the G. Towards the close of the presentation, TopElectricSUV reports that it teased a Mercedes G-Class veiled in a golden car cover, parked in the hall of a palatial building in a matching beige theme.

While playing the teaser, the narrator said:

“The G is an important profit driver for Mercedes, and there are more chapters to come, including G going electric.”

At the Automobilewoche Kongress program in November 2019, Ola Kallenius, the Chairman of Mercedes-Benz & Daimler, had said, and acknowledged for the first time, that a Mercedes G-Class Electric was in the product pipeline. On 6 October 2020, it was during one of Kallenius’s presentations that the teaser was played and the official confirmation arrived.

While at this time there are no details on the Mercedes G-Wagen Electric, we assume that it would have nothing to do with the Mercedes EVA platform or the Mercedes MMA platform that were also detailed at the same event. Preserving the rugged go-anywhere capability of the G-Class, Daimler’s engineers would be tasked to repurpose the existing platform and shoehorn the battery pack, motor and power electronics to give it a new character. Expecting to touchdown in a brutally competitive environment with respect to on and off road capabilities later this decade, expect the WLTP range to touch 500 km in the basic specification.

Daimler has not given guidance on the launch date of the G-Class, but one should see it shortly after the Mercedes EQE SUV and Mercedes EQS SUV models are launched in the market, around 2024.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×4²

Every Bit As Extreme As The Original

Last week, spy photos of the new 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×4² without any camouflage made their way online. Now, a beautiful pair of renderings of the lifted G-Wagon have made their way as well.

The current-generation G-Class doesn’t look dramatically different than the previous model and similarly, the flagship 4×4² won’t be all that different either. Which in reality is not a bad thing. As the saying goes, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it and the original G-Class 4×4², badged as the G500 in Europe and the G550 in the United States, is one of the most badass vehicles currently out there.

Mercedes G-Class 4x4

Mercedes G-Class 4×4

These renderings from Kolesa depict the new 4×4² with a black bull bar that could be offered as an option but wasn’t present on the prototype recently snapped. Like the previous-gen model, the vehicle will use advanced portal axles to give it a huge amount of ground clearance, not that most buyers will be brave enough to take it off-roading.

Spin around to the rear and the vehicle has been rendered with a spare wheel attached to the tailgate and a thick bull bar covering it. The small rear ladder of the recent prototype is not present in these renderings but we suspect it will be an option.

Details regarding the powertrain of the new 4×4² remain unclear. There is no doubt that it will feature a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 like most current AMG models but it remains to be seen if it will produce the same 416 hp and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of torque as the previous G500 / G550 4×4² models. Given how popular the off-roader proved to be when it went on sale, we wouldn’t be shocked to see the German firm slot in the more punchy 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the G63 that offers up 577 hp and 627 lb-ft (849 Nm).

It’s Official: An Electric G-Wagen by Mercedes-Benz is in the Works

Daimler AG CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the company is developing an electric version of the SUV

Two years after the automaker made its lofty claim of 10 discrete electric vehicles by 2022 and six months after the debut of its first electric SUV, the ECQ—new Daimler AG CEO Ola Källenius has confirmed that the company is hard at work electrifying everyone’s favorite German SUV. The unexpected G-Class news came in a tweet from the company’s head of digital transformation Sascha Pallenberg that was published late last week.

Daimler AG CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the company is developing an electric version of the SUV

Daimler AG CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the company is developing an electric version of the SUV

”There will be a zero-emission EV version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class,” Källenius is quoted as saying in the tweet. “In the past there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model, the way I see things now I’d say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class.” (Robb Report has also reached out to Mercedes-Benz for independent confirmation of the news. Watch this space for updates.)

While it’s exciting to know that an electrified G-Class is in the works, it might be more impressive that Källenius has a long-term vision for the vehicle. With the industry-wide movement towards more efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles—even Lamborghini is exploring the EV market—there was more than a little concern out there for the fate of Mercedes-Benz’s largest SUV.

That’s due, in part, because an electric G-Wagen will be no simple task. The G-Class is already one of the heaviest vehicles on the market, and the EQG—assuming it follows the naming convention of the EQC and upcoming EQA—would likely be even heavier because of the added weight of the undoubtedly huge battery that would be needed to power such a beast, Autoblog points out.

Fortunately, there’s already proof of concept on the road. In 2017, Arnold Schwarzenegger commissioned Austrian firm Kreisel Electric to electrify a late model, first generation G-Class for him. The governator was even filmed driving the 493 mph SUV (and taking selfies with it). Kreisel has been clear that the electric SUV was a one-of-a-kind prototype, but who would blame Mercedes for taking a few pointers?

G-Class Special Exhibition

The new special exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum entitled “G-Schichten” celebrates 40 years of the G-Class

The new special exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum entitled “G-Schichten” (G stories) celebrates 40 years of the G-Class and will be recounting the history of the G with eleven vehicles and further exhibits between 18 October 2019 and 19 April 2020. Throughout the opening weekend on both 19 and 20 October further special G-Class vehicles will be on show inside and outside the museum, including a G from Porsche Museum’s collection. Also, there will be an art project for children involving an actual G-Class.

Mercedes-Benz Museum, “G-Schichten” (G stories) special exhibition on the G-Class, 18 October 2019 to 19 April 2020. Computer rendering of the exhibition design.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been an unparalleled success story since its première 40 years ago: from the outset, the vehicle has been inspiring with outstanding off-road properties as well as its confident on-road appearance.

The new Mercedes-Benz Museum special exhibition is entitled “G-Schichten” (G stories). It recounts the diverse history of this model series by showcasing very different specimens of this vehicle model. The exhibition will be open in Collection Room 5 between October 18, 2019 and April 19, 2020.

The stars of the exhibition will be vehicles dating back to 1979. They will include the 1980 “Popemobile”, a faithful reconstruction of the vehicle that won the 1983 Paris–Dakar rally and the very last G-Class Cabriolet from 2013.

Program of the opening weekend, 19 and 20 of October, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

  • Seeing and being seen: In addition to the exhibition, five special G-Class vehicles will be on show on the museum hill. Three Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG “Crazy Color” special editions will be making their colourful mark. A G 63 AMG 6×6 will be demonstrating how the unique properties of the G-Class are pushed even further with three instead of two axles, and the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet merges the off-road capabilities of the G with luxury at the highest level. Further converted G-Class exhibits will be on show in the Large Hall. They will be showcased by LeTech, a company based in Welzheim which specialises in off-road vehicles. Plenty more variants of the off-road icon are also expected to flock to the museum hill as visitors travelling to the exhibition in their G-Class can park in front of the museum and visit the exhibition free of charge.
  • Be creative: As part of a project headed up by the art school Kunstschule Unteres Remstal children will be able to apply colourful foils to an actual G-Class. Young artists will be designing the motifs themselves using stencils. Drawing templates and modelling sheets will also be available to create paper models of the cross-country vehicle.
  • Win: Spin a wheel of fortune at the exhibition on both days.

Porsche Museum is providing a very special exhibit during the weekend: A G-Class that was used as the service vehicle during the 1986 Paris-Dakar rally. It is driven by a 4.7-litre V8 engine from a Porsche 928.

The Brabus 550 Adventure 4×4² – King of Off-Roaders

The Brabus 550 Adventure 4x4² Photo Gallery

It goes without saying that the Mercedes G500 4×4² has taken the already near perfect G-Class and raised the bar. With its portal axles, gigantic wheels and tires, and its eight lavish shock absorbers. But that wasn’t enough for Brabus, the German tuning company, known for pushing further with every vehicle it puts out, has taken the savage beast and upped its game. The Brabus 550 Adventure 4×4², the new king of off-roaders.

Milestones in G-Class History

For 40 years the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been the measure of all things in the off-road

For 40 years the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been the measure of all things in the off-road-vehicle segment, and for 20 years as an AMG model, too, with an extra portion of performance. This makes it by far the longest-standing passenger car model series built in Mercedes-Benz history and thus the forefather of all SUVs with the three-pointed star.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class – 2019 G550 Review

Fully updated and packed with modern luxury and tech, the G550's cabin is one of Mercedes' finest

First, let’s start with what hasn’t changed: dat curb appeal. Viewed from the side or rear three-quarter, you could be forgiven for mistaking the 2019 G550 for its predecessor, especially in the unimaginative shade of Iridium Silver pictured here. (Fun fact: The G550 is available in your choice of 24 different exterior paint options, giving it one of the most diverse color palettes of any Mercedes-Benz model — second only to the AMG G63, natch.)

The G’s visual changes are more obvious up front, where the round headlamps are outlined by LED daytime running lights. Brush guards are available for either the upper or lower fascias. They come in chrome or, if you spec the $5,370 Night Package with AMG Line, black. The G550 rolls on either 19- or 20-inch wheels, the former of which are seen on this test car, wrapped in Detroit-in-January-friendly Pirelli Scorpion winter tires.

Yet despite casting a striking resemblance to its forebear, all but two parts of the exterior are actually new. Only the door handles and spare tire cover carry over unchanged from the last-generation G. And if you’ve ever had the pleasure of opening or closing the door of a G-Wagen, you know that the very specific click of the chunky door handles are paramount to a proper G-Class experience.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

A big luxury upgrade

Fully updated and packed with modern luxury and tech, the G550’s cabin is one of Mercedes’ finest.

Everything here is new, save the passenger-side dashboard grab handle and the three differential lock buttons in the center stack (more historically accurate G-Wagen stuff). Every touchable surface is lined with the finest materials, and the seats are cushy and supportive, offering a commanding view out the upright windshield and down the flat hood. Two aluminum tweeters flank either side of the shallow dashboard and are meant to mimic the placement of the turn signals at the end of the bonnet. More metal outlines the stylized air vents, nicely complementing the carbon-fiber trim on the center console. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of bright red leather, but I think it totally works against the silver exterior of this G550 test car. (“The mantra was that an ordinary exterior must have a sexy interior,” a former Mercedes rep told me.)

Because the 2019 G550 is almost five inches wider than its predecessor, front and rear passengers enjoy more shoulder and elbow room than before. Headroom, meanwhile, remains plentiful, and the G550’s sunroof is finally a glass piece with a sunshade, rather than the one-piece roof panel from the previous generation. Thanks to the G’s 2.1 inches of additional length and a bench that’s positioned further back, rear passengers enjoy an extra 6 inches of legroom in the 2019 G550 — a welcome improvement. The more generous back-seat accommodation impedes slightly on cargo space but there’s still a wealth of capacity behind the tailgate, even if its side-hinged design is tough to use when you’re backed into a garage or tightly parallel parked.

Old tech is good tech

The G-Class gets a big tech update for 2019, though it doesn’t benefit from the latest MBUX infotainment system that you’ll find in the A-Class sedan. Instead, you get the most recent iteration of COMAND, housed on a 12.3-inch screen in the center of the dash. You can operate the infotainment system either via the large touchpad on the center console or the rotary knob found underneath, or with the thumbpad on the right side of the steering wheel. COMAND works as well here as it has in every other recent Mercedes — the menus are a little tough to manage at first, but there’s a wealth of customization options within. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi-Fi hotspot are also along for the ride.

Tick the $850 digital instrument cluster option box and you get a second 12.3-inch display that serves as the gauge cluster. Leave this option off, and a fixed-dial setup is standard. Seeing as you’re already spending at least $124,500 on a G550, I can’t imagine needing to skimp on this relatively affordable option. But on the other hand, with its six-figure price tag, I’m not sure why Mercedes doesn’t just offer the dual-screen setup as standard equipment.

The new G-Class gets a ton of advanced driving aids, too, and happily, they aren’t optional extras. Every G550 comes with Mercedes’ Distronic adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot assist, active brake assist, traffic sign recognition, parking assist, rear cross-traffic alert and more.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

Just as capable, but nicer to drive

Driving aids aside, the biggest improvement to the G’s behind-the-wheel demeanor is its more modern steering system and suspension geometry. Yes, the archaic, recirculating-ball steering of the old G is gone, with a new, electromechanical setup in its place. It doesn’t offer any sort of uncharacteristically sharp turn-in or wealth of sports car-like feedback — the G550 still steers like a G550 — but combined with the independent front suspension, the G feels more stable from behind the wheel. There’s a lot less play in the steering wheel and a better sense of what’s happening at road level. More than anything, the G550 just feels easier to control.

There’s certainly no shortage of available power, after all, the G550 uses the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine you’ll find under the hood of many Mercedes-AMG cars. Here, the lovely V8 puts out 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which comes on strong at 2,000 rpm. There’s the slightest bit of lag just before you dig into the meat of the engine’s power band, but when you do, you’ll feel a punch of thrust and an intoxicating growl — a reminder that while the G550 itself isn’t a product of AMG, its engine surely is. Impressively, Mercedes says this 5,551-pound, box-shaped G550 can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 5.6 seconds. That’s only 0.3 seconds slower than the 516-horsepower AMG G63.

The nine-speed automatic transmission will happily keep the V8 on boil when you’re digging into the throttle, and will just as eagerly jump into its top gear when you’re cruising in an effort to eke out maximum fuel economy. Of course, with EPA-estimated ratings of 13 miles per gallon city, 17 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined, you won’t be winning any eco awards in this big boy.

Should you venture off road — and in a G-Class, you really ought to — you’ll find the G550 can handle just about anything you can throw at it. The 2019 model can ford 27.6 inches of water and can handle a 45-degree incline, all while the massaging, heated seats put your back and butt at ease. For a full take of the G’s incredible off-road prowess, I recommend reading my earlier account from the hills of France, or reviews editor Emme Hall’s take in the sand dunes outside of San Diego.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

2019 Mercedes-Benz G550

How I’d spec it

Even if you never tick a single option box, at $124,500, not including $995 for destination, the G550 is nicely equipped.

The majority of the available options concern exterior and interior styling, and just how plush you want the cabin to be.

Since I’m using hypothetical dollars here, and because I’m fancy as hell, I’m spending $6,500 for the dark green “Designo Olive Metallic” paint, and adding the $5,370 Night Package with AMG Line styling, which gets me 20-inch wheels, a sport exhaust (roar!) and black exterior accents, including the brush guard. Inside, I want Designo Espresso Brown leather and metal accents, must-haves if I’m checking the $12,200 Exclusive Interior Package Plus that also includes Nappa upholstery, rapid-heating front seats, cooled seats and more. The $250 heated steering wheel is a must, the no-cost black seat belts replace the tacky red ones of the aforementioned AMG pack and I want the $850 digital instrument cluster because analog gauges are so last millennium. I could option the $1,400 adaptive suspension, but really, in an SUV like this, it doesn’t make much of a difference.

All in, I’m looking at $151,815 for my ideal, Beverly Hills-spec G550. Actually, wait, a properly SoCal spec would be the AMG G63. Back to the configurator…

Nuthin’ but a G thang

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 is an expensive proposition, and it isn’t for everyone. It’s not the most spacious SUV at this price, and while the new version has made great strides in on-road handling, it’s still more truck-like than just about anything else in the luxury space (except, maybe, a Lexus LX 570).

But admit it, you want one. I want one. There’s nothing else on the market quite like the G-Class, and whether you’re buying it to cruise boulevards or climb mountains, it’ll handle anything you can throw at it — and then some — with incredible comfort and capability.

The New Mercedes-Benz G350 d

The G-Class is the forefather of all SUVs bearing the three-pointed star

Three words sum up the new Mercedes-Benz G350 d: powerful, comfortable and superior. The new G-Class launched it’s first version in June and have since been conquering the off-road trails around the world. The cross-country vehicle offers up superior performance, safety, modern assistance systems and excellent handling and now with the option of an efficient diesel variant. The new G 350 d has a fuel consumption of roughly 24.8 mpg, an output like never before. The models will be available to order starting in January 2019 and will arrive in dealerships in spring. As a result, the G-Class model range now offers buyers a choice between the G 500 (fuel consumption around 21 mpg), the AMG G 63 (fuel consumption 18.2 mph) and the new G 350 d.

The new OM 656 diesel engine will also set standards in the G-Class in terms of performance – both on and off the road. “Our goal was to increase the performance” while reducing the consumption and improving the noise characteristics at the same time”, stresses Ola Källenius, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development on the Daimler Board of Management.

The characteristics of the top-notch engine include the stepped-bowl combustion process, two-stage exhaust turbocharging as well as the use of CAMTRONIC variable valve timing. This heats up the exhaust system without driving up fuel consumption. The further advanced NANOSLIDE® cylinder wall coating also reduces friction losses in the piston/cylinder wall system and reduces fuel consumption.

The G-Class is the top model among luxury off-road vehicles.

As powerful and superior as never before

The new in-line six-cylinder diesel makes the icon the most efficient “G” so far. It produces an output of 210 kW(286 hp) and with a peak torque of 600 Newton metres between 1200 and 3200 rpm is as powerful as never before.

The new six-cylinder diesel engine is designed to comply with future emissions legislation (RDE – Real Driving Emissions). All components relevant for efficient emissions reduction are installed directly at the engine. This contributes to faster effectiveness of the catalytic converter and the diesel particulate filter. Thanks to the integral technology approach comprising the new stepped-bowl combustion process, dynamic multi-path exhaust gas recirculation and near-engine emission control system, further reduced consumption figures with low emissions are possible. Thanks to the near-engine insulated configuration, the emission control system has little heat loss and ideal operating conditions.

The most efficient G of all time

Thanks to further enhanced emission control technologies, the powerful six-cylinder unit from the modern OM 656 engine family remains below all of the emission limits of the current Euro 6d-TEMP standard even in demanding driving situations and environmental conditions. This is achieved with an additional selective catalytic reduction (SCR) converter with an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) in the exhaust tract of the GLE. The SCR catalyst (Selective Catalytic Reduction) reduces the nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gas. To this end, AdBlue®, an aqueous urea solution, is fed into the system. It chemically converts the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, thus releasing ammonia, which reduces up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. The filler neck for the AdBlue® is integrated into the external tank recess of the vehicle, which makes straightforward filling at the fuel pump possible.

The G-Class “glides”, using its own, current kinetic energy for a certain distance. It rolls for a measurably longer distance than when coasting.

In ECO drive mode, the gliding function helps to save additional fuel. When the driver’s foot leaves the accelerator pedal, the transmission’s clutch disengages. This reduces the engine speed to idling level, and the driving resistance is reduced by the compression and frictional forces of the engine while coasting. The G-Class “glides”, using its own, current kinetic energy for a certain distance. It rolls for a measurably longer distance than when coasting. This results in further fuel savings. The clutch is re-engaged as soon as the driver operates the accelerator or brake pedal.

Comfort (too) at new heights

Partly due to the new quiet and harmonious diesel engine, the G-Class proves to be extremely comfortable, even on long distances. When driving, the exhaust system and the engine, which is also willing to rev at higher engine speeds, produce much less noise and vibrations in the interior. To reduce engine noise, the engine mounts of the diesel engine are actively controlled for the first time. At speeds below 5 km/h, they are set to soft to optimally dampen the transfer of torsional vibrations to the ladder-type frame at low engine speeds. At higher engine speeds, the two engine mounts are automatically made stiffer, which has positive effects on the vibrational comfort and the driving dynamics.

9G-TRONIC on board

For the transmission of power, the 9G‑TRONIC automatic transmission with torque converter was specifically adapted to meet the needs of the off-road icon. The developers used a dedicated software application to shorten the shift and response times of the 9-speed transmission and make the G-Class seem even more lively. The wide transmission ratio not only makes driving quieter and more comfortable especially at low engine speeds, it simultaneously also contributes to reducing fuel consumption. Especially in first gear, the off-roader responds to accelerator pedal commands noticeably better, which customers will appreciate especially when pulling away from a traffic light, for example. The “G” is now also significantly more agile during brief sprints under partial load.

The new transfer case is flange-mounted directly to the 9G-TRONIC. It is designed to send 40 percent of the drive torque to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle. This configuration particularly benefits the handling characteristics on the road. The permanent all-wheel drive ensures maximum traction. However, the “G” would not be a “G” if it did not have even more in store. The low-range off-road reduction gear considerably increases torque at the drive wheels, which e.g. makes very difficult terrain negotiable.

Personal best in terms of equipment features

The G 350 d is more extensively equipped as standard than the preceding model even ex-factory. This includes the high-quality interior with leather seats, an instrument panel covered in ARTICO man-made leather, and open-pore wood. There are also new options to tailor the G 350 d fully to personal preferences. In addition to various optional extras, Mercedes-Benz offers items from the very popular designo manufaktur ex-factory. For the first time ever, the Exclusive Interior Plus with diamond quilting is optionally available for the G 350 d.

As a result, the G 350 d is a seamless fit with the G-Class, which embodies craftsmanship and customisability like no other vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. In fact, the G-Class is almost exclusively built by hand, which results in a total production time of at least 100 hours. This underscores the uniqueness and high quality of every G-Class.

DYNAMIC SELECT is now available with up to five drive modes for the G-Class as standard. This allows adjusting the vehicle characteristics in seconds at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension, and steering at the driver’s behest. In addition, the G-Class offers a host of new driver assistance systems. For example, Active Braking Assist is able to prevent impending collisions or mitigate their consequences, and assist the driver during emergency braking. If necessary, it will brake autonomously if the driver takes no action to defuse a detected dangerous situation.

Even better off the road, more dynamic than ever on the road

Specifically for the G-Class, the new front axle is designed in such a robust way that the off-road performance and off-road capabilities of its predecessor are retained and partly even surpassed. The components of the double-wishbone front suspension are directly mounted to the ladder-type frame without a subframe. The lower wishbone’s attachment points on the frame in Z-direction are positioned as high up as possible. This arrangement ensures good driveability beyond the asphalt.

At the rear, in contrast to the predecessor, the new rigid axle is controlled by four trailing arms on each side and a Panhard rod. This makes normal driving on the road even more comfortable. Off the road, the rear spring jounce of 82 mm and rebound of 142 mm plus the ground clearance of 241 mm to the rear axle gear help to ensure a safe ride even in extreme situations.

Thanks to the new front-axle design, the on-road performance of the G-Class has been enhanced at the same time. On the road, the “G” is as agile as it is comfortable and provides the driver with a better steering feel. The off-roader stays on track more solidly, and is agile and effortless when driving off-road.

Stronger than time

The G-Class is the top model among luxury off-road vehicles. It is not only the passenger car model series with by far the longest production run in the history of Mercedes-Benz, but also the forefather of all SUVs bearing the three-pointed star – this is why all Mercedes off-road models feature the upper-case G in their name.

What began more than 40 years ago with a cooperation agreement between then Daimler-Benz AG and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the Austrian city of Graz is now a story peppered with superlatives and milestones. At the time of its market launch, in the spring of 1979, it was available with a choice of four engine variants covering a performance range from of 53 kW/72 hp to 115 kW/156 hp. Customers had the option of a Cabriolet with a short wheelbase or Station Wagon models with short or long wheelbase. The consortium decided on the simple but distinctive name “G”, standing for “Geländewagen” (off-road vehicle). At that time nobody could have guessed that this was an almost visionary decision in view of the later change in the nomenclature of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars classes, using just a single letter.

In 1989 the vehicles of the model series 463 marked the beginning of an evolutionary process for the off-roader that was not just about keeping pace with technical progress. It was an evolution that also brought a steadily expanding fan base and emphasised its character as an exclusive vehicle for any occasion. And, since 1993, a vehicle with an official name: the G-Class.

The summer of 2017 saw the 300,000th G-Class roll off the assembly line in Graz – a Mercedes-Benz G 500 in designo Mauritius blue metallic with black leather seats and contrasting white topstitching (fuel consumption, combined: 12.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km).

The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class : Design

Every G-Class must be put to the test on the Schöckl

The G-Class, the luxury off-road vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, has long been considered a design icon. Its external appearance has not changed significantly since 1979. Its unmistakable shape is its trademark, and together with its extraordinary off-road attributes this has made it the trendsetter in the off-road segment.

The aim behind the new G-Class is to make the elegance and high quality of the vehicle even more obvious, for an even more striking appearance. “The new G-Class is setting the bar higher still in all relevant areas – in terms of performance both on and off the road as well as with regard to comfort and telematics. Our ‘longest-serving’ model series is therefore ideally equipped to continue its success story. In short, the new ‘G’ is still a ‘G’, only better,” stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The further evolved design of the G-Class follows the philosophy of Sensual Purity and at the same time remains true to the character of the original. The design once again confirms that this Mercedes-Benz off-roader is an icon, and that no other has the same, up-to-date on-road capabilities together with superior off-road capabilities. It is both hot and cool at the same time.

“The G-Class is the measure of all SUVs. We have given due deference to the character of this icon, and yet exercised puristic reduction to create the transition to modern luxury,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. The distinctive door handles and the characteristic closing sound, the robust exterior protective strip, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door and the prominent indicator lights remain typical features. Other typical G-Class features include the plain, rectangular tail lights, which are now contoured and mounted to the body.

The door hinges positioned on the outside and the surface-mounted bonnet are also carried over to the new generation. With the latest update, the off-road icon – which has been continually enhanced technically over the decades but visually has hardly changed – is making the leap into a new era – both in terms of technology and form. The new G-Class is 53 mm longer and 64 mm wider, and now has even greater presence, both on and off the road.

Tauter surfaces, precise transitions, intelligently conceived details

More than ever, the new G-Class appears to be cast from a single piece. All surfaces have a more taut design and are have more tension, while the surface quality has been taken to an even higher level. This results in narrower, more precise gaps and more harmonious transitions. In addition, the wheel arches and bumpers form a more integral part of the body and thus look less like add‑o n features.

Off-road capabilities were already incorporated into the design during the development of the first G-Class. A principle that has proved successful to this day. The chamfered sides of the square headlamps help to ensure that the body and headlamps are less susceptible to damage when driving on rough terrain or through narrow stretches, for example. All lighting functions including the daytime running lamps are integrated into single headlamp units. Customers have a choice between LED headlamps and high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps.

Distinctive grille meets an iconic spare wheel

The front section is characterised by the striking radiator grille in a three-louvre design with painted inlays and a large, central Mercedes star, steep A-pillars and a flat windscreen. The louvre carriers and inlays are individually styled depending on the equipment line, and e.g. painted in obsidian black. As optional equipment the inlays are available in high-gloss chrome. In this case the louvre carrier is in matt iridium silver.

Clear lines and large surfaces characterise the side view. The classic, short overhangs emphasise the balanced proportions of the off-roader. The side skirts, beltline and drainage strip take a parallel course. The side rub strip, which is semi-integrated like the tail lights, is just as functional and horizontal at the height of the door handles. On request this is available with pinstripes or in a striated or brushed aluminium look. Depending on the choice of optional equipment, running boards make access and egress easier.

Thanks to its wide track, a slightly trapezoidal rear window and prominent wheel arch linings, the G-Class appears very four-square when viewed from the rear. The rear fog lamp is integrated into the LED tail light. A large door hinged on the left carries the spare wheel and gives access to the luggage or cargo area. As a distinctive feature, the designers retained the external hinges on the rear door and all other doors.

The reversing camera is now positioned below the spare wheel, so that the driver has a clear view to the rear and can manoeuvre with millimetric precision. Unusual detail: for maximum reliability, the camera is waterproofed and therefore also protected against soiling; owing to the 100-millimetre increase in the fording depth of the new G-Class to 700 mm, it may be below the waterline in extreme cases.

The new, optional electric glass sliding roof not only gives pleasant ventilation to the interior, but also a view to the outside thanks to tinted glass. And should it start to rain, the roof automatically moves to the tilted position. In the event of an accident, the PRE-SAFE® system closes the glass roof if a rollover threatens.

Customers have a choice of eleven new exterior paint finishes, e.g. brilliant blue or designo mystic white bright. 24 paint colours are available, of which nine are metallic and 13 are designo manufaktur colours.

Interior: as luxurious as it is authentic

While the exterior maintains the iconic, classic look, the interior of the G-Class has undergone a fundamental modern redesign which reinterprets the genes of the classic vehicle to reflect the exterior. With its off-road character and top-class luxury appointments, the G-Class has always combined two extremes into a harmonious symbiosis. Unmistakable at first glance and from the first touch, only high-quality materials are used. Every detail is finished by hand with the utmost care.

Getting into the G-Class reveals that numerous design features from the exterior have been transposed into the interior. The shape of the round headlamps, for instance, which is reflected in the side air vents. Or the design of the iconic indicators, found again in the shape of the loudspeakers. The driver, co-driver and passengers in the second row benefit from the increase in width, and therefore the more spacious interior of the off-roader. Hallmarks of the G-Class include the grab handle in front of the front passenger and the chrome-highlighted switches for the three differential locks. Both have been further improved and retained as characteristic features. In an accident the front passenger airbag deploys above the grab handle.

The centre console benefits from the design freedom and has been completely newly configured to meet the functional requirements. The touch-sensitive Touch Controls on the steering wheel respond to swiping motions in the same way as the surface of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

The very clearly arranged and completely redesigned instrument panel features timeless tube-look analogue dials as standard. In other words, fans of classic round instruments will certainly not be disappointed in the new G-Class. As in the new E-Class and S-Class, an instrument cluster in the form of a large display showing virtual instruments in the driver’s direct field of vision and a central display above the centre console is available as an option. In this case the two 12.3-inch displays blend visually into a Widescreen Cockpit beneath a shared glass cover. Drivers can choose between three different styles for the displays – “Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive” – and also select relevant information and views according to their individual needs.

Thanks to haptic impulses and audible feedback from the on-board speakers, drivers can use the touchpad with controller in the centre console without taking their eyes off the road. The input options are rounded off by shortcut keys in front of the controller for frequently used operating tasks, and by the optional control panel for the driving assistance systems above the rotary light switch. The driver sits up close to the windscreen and enjoys good all-round visibility from behind the wheel.

Tasteful: high-quality materials

With its unmistakable character and high-quality appointments, the G-Class has always managed to combine off-road capability and luxury in a particularly harmonious way. Even in its standard specification, the G-Class’s timeless and authentic open-pore wood trim gives it an air of classical elegance. Its stylish details include the generous use of high-quality metal or carbon fibre trim, and its leather seats. The doors are very solid, clear evidence of that hallmark “G” functionality. A well-conceived stowage space concept with numerous stowage compartments e.g. in the armrest or in the rear doors ensures that everything has its place. There is now an illuminated compartment under the armrest for items such as a penknife or sunglasses. The adjustable backrest of the rear bench seat is free-standing for maximum variability. Ten adjustment stages from Comfort to Cargo allow maximum flexibility.

Schöckl proved

“Every G-Class must be put to the test on the Schöckl.” And this was the motto that headed the list of requirement specifications when it came to redesigning this classic among off-roaders. The Schöckl is the mountain just outside Graz in the Austrian state of Styria which Mercedes-Benz uses for test drives, and which every off-roader since the early development days of the “G” in the early 1970s has had to overcome. Which is why every “G” bears a certification mark in the form of a “Schöckl” on both sides at the base of its B-pillar.

The driver, co-driver and passengers benefit from the larger dimensions of the new G-Class. Legroom for the rear passengers has increased by 15 centimetres, and by 3.8 centimetres for the driver and co-driver.

The rear seats can be folded down to 60, 40 or 100 percent. The seats in the G-Class are equipped as standard with numerous convenience functions and are ergonomically designed, thus providing enhanced seating comfort and lateral support. Other features are e.g. the memory function for the front seats, front and rear seat heating and luxury head restraints in the front. This ride comfort can optionally be boosted still further with the Active Multicontour Seat package. In addition to the special multicontour seats, this encompasses such features as various massage functions, climate-controlled seats, and fast seat heating. This variant also offers electrically adjustable lumbar supports for the driver and front passenger. The side sections of the seat cushions and backrests of the active multicontour seats include integrated air chambers that fill or empty continuously depending on the driving dynamics, thus providing better support for the seating positions of driver and front passenger and, for example, offering more lateral support during cornering. The front seats of the Active Multicontour Seat Package are recommended by experts from the German spinal health organisation “Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.”.

Connectivity and digitisation using the latest technology is provided by the infotainment system COMAND Online included as standard. This begins with effortless integration of a smartphone into the onboard infotainment system. Phone calls can then be conveniently made via the Bluetooth® hands-free system.

Apple’s smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay® and Google’s Android Auto™ can also be used with COMAND Online. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay® or Android AutoTM interface.

Modern-style navigation

COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-drive navigation with topographical map display, 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. The system presents its content interactively and its features include an animated compass. COMAND Online uses the familiar traffic data service Live Traffic Information. This allows reception of up-to-date and precise traffic information in real time for an exact estimate of the time of arrival.

Audio playback is possible from various sources. For example via Bluetooth® or USB stick. COMAND Online also offers video playback and an integrated hotspot functionality for up to three mobile devices. It allows passengers in all seats to connect different WiFi-capable devices, such as laptop or tablet computers, to the internet.

Exquisite listening experience

The standard audio system features seven loudspeakers. The Burmester® surround sound system with 15 speakers and a 590 watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing is available as optional equipment. The listening experience is particularly remarkable in the low bass range, which has especially good sound resolution.
