Mercedes-Benz has recently announced that from 2023, the Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8, which was launched 30 years ago and is known as the ‘Luxury Off-Roader,’ can be classified as historic cultural assets. This means that well-maintained 500 GE V8s can be granted a coveted H registration plate if they pass the classic car appraisal. The 500 GE V8 was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1993 and was equipped with a proven eight-cylinder engine from the brand’s passenger car range. The engine was capable of producing 177 kW (240 hp) and 375 newton metres of torque from a displacement of 4973 cubic centimetres.
In 1993, the 500 GE V8 was priced at DM 178,250, which was expensive compared to other models. However, the 500 GE V8 was equipped with Bridgestone tyres of the new dimension 265/70 R 16 H on aluminum wheels, the only off-road tyres approved for speeds up to 210 km/h. The brake system was also configured for this level of driving performance, and the suspension was designed with the emphasis on comfort. The drivetrain, with its permanent four-wheel drive, remained unchanged except for the front differential lock, which was not offered in this model. The car was available exclusively as a Station Wagon with a long wheelbase (2850 millimetres).
The interior of the 500 GE V8 was redesigned with a black leather interior with contrasting elements, medium grey seat and backrest cushions, and door panels that were trimmed. Walnut veneer was used for the wood trim of the centre console, parts of the handbrake lever, the two transmission selector levers, and trim elements on the doors. A special amethyst blue metallic paint finish extended to the bumpers, wing flares, and mirror housings. Automatic transmission, air conditioning, cruise control, a sliding sunroof, leather steering wheel, and heated seats were always on board.
Mercedes-Benz produced only 446 units of the 500 GE V8, which was a limited edition because the M-117 engines available were scarce. The 500 GE V8 was expensive compared to other G-Class models, including the G 320 with a six-cylinder engine, which cost DM 88,500, while a 500 SE in the 140-series S-Class, with the M 119 engine, was available for DM 129,030. The G-Class is by far the longest-produced model series from Mercedes-Benz, launched in 1979, and the forefather of all SUVs sporting the three-pointed star. It is designed and constructed for tough everyday use, for example by foresters, farmers, in the military, or on unpaved tracks worldwide.
Around 80% of all the G-Class vehicles ever produced are still in existence, which is clear proof of the outstanding quality of this off-roader. The G-Class combines superior off-road capability with full on-road capability and safety. All-wheel drive and differential locks with 100 percent effect are as much a part of this vehicle as the rigid ladder-type frame.
In conclusion, the 500 GE V8 was a unique model in the G-Class, which has gained the status of a cultural asset due to its rarity and exclusivity. The 500 GE V8 was the harbinger of high-end off-roaders in the automotive luxury class, and well-maintained models can now receive the coveted H registration plate. Mercedes-Benz is proud of its history and heritage, and the 500 GE V8 is a testament to its commitment to producing high-quality, luxury vehicles that stand the test of time.
The G-Class is continuing its over 40-year success story: From the manufacturing date 1 September 2020, the standard equipment for the iconic off-road vehicle is even more extensive. At the same time, there are also more personalisation options available through the G manufaktur programme. New exterior colours and equipment packages as well as the widescreen cockpit, which now comes as standard, round out the offering. The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is now available to order at prices from 99,446.80 to 102,694.80 euros, while the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 comes in at a price of 154,309.00 euros.
The most important new aspect: Previously featuring restricted availability, the G 400 d (combined fuel consumption: 8.9-8.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 235-229 g/km)1 is now freely configurable and available without restriction because the previous special model has been discontinued. The most powerful configuration level of the in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 243 kW (330 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm at 1200 to 3200 rpm delivers propulsion befitting its status, even under tough off-road conditions.
Functional enhancements also come courtesy of the new “Desert” drive program. It is activated via the DYNAMIC SELECT rocker switch and is designed for maximum traction on sandy terrain. The perfect interplay of late upshifting, direct throttle response and adjusted ESP® control predestines the G-Class even more to be a desert champion. What is more, the Parking Package with reversing camera is now part of the standard equipment, helping the G-Class to cut a fine figure on any terrain.
The update also includes comprehensive scope for personalisation to suit individual wishes. For example, the often-requested Night Package can now be ordered without the AMG Line and Stainless Steel Package. It comprises heat-insulating dark-tinted glass, outside mirror housings and radiator grille (including louvres with the surround of the Mercedes star) in obsidian black metallic, as well as darkened turn signal lamps, reversing lamps and headlamps. If the G-Class is ordered with a matt magno paint finish, the package can be configured as the Night Package magno. In this case, the corresponding add-on parts come in the colour night black magno. The Stainless Steel Package continues to be available with spare wheel cover, running boards, door sills and loading sill protection in stainless steel and adds a painted spare wheel ring and an exterior protective strip with trim insert in a pinstripe look to the Night Packages.
The new 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheel available exclusively for the AMG Line has a high-sheen finish and is painted in a choice of high-gloss black or himalaya grey.
Vehicle interior now with widescreen cockpit as standard
From now on, the widescreen cockpit is part of the standard equipment in all G-Class models and sets a clear technological tone in terms of the aesthetics. The frameless inside rearview mirror, previously part of the Leather Packages, now also enhances the standard equipment specification. The interior of the G-Class undergoes further upgrading when one of the Interior Packages is selected: The switches for the window lifters then come in silver chrome and the sun visors in DINAMICA microfibre. Black floor mats are also now on board as standard. In conjunction with the AMG Line, floor mats bearing the AMG logo adorn the floor of the G-Class – the same floor mats that are also found in the Mercedes-AMG G 63.
Greater anti-theft protection is provided by the new equipment packages URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection and URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection Plus. They replace the previous break-in and anti-theft alarm system. URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection includes:
In addition, URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection Plus includes pinpointing the location of a stolen vehicle. This service is free of charge for three years from activation (only with Mercedes me connect) and is scheduled to be available from the fourth quarter of 2020.
Rich diversity: new G manufaktur offerings
The G manufaktur programme provides an almost unlimited variety of personalisation options. Here too choice has been extended. For example, three new solid paint colours G manufaktur classic grey uni, G manufaktur deep green uni and G manufaktur china blue uni evoke reminders of legendary exterior colours from 40 years of the G-Class. For the new Night Package magno, G manufaktur offers additional accents in black: a spare wheel ring painted in night black magno as well as bumpers and wheel arch extensions in the same colour. In selected countries, a body-styling bar is also available in night black magno.
The G manufaktur programme exclusively includes the Night Package II and the AMG Night Package II – each in conjunction with the Night Packages of the standard model designations. Night Package II includes:
The AMG Night Package II includes:
The bumpers and wheel arch extensions in obsidian black metallic as well as the roof painted in the same colour are now available separately too in conjunction with the Night Package. It continues to be the case that all personalisation with G manufaktur is embedded in the production process, meaning that vehicles can be delivered without delay.

The G-Class, the luxury off-road vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, has long been considered a design icon. Its external appearance has not changed significantly since 1979. Its unmistakable shape is its trademark, and together with its extraordinary off-road attributes this has made it the trendsetter in the off-road segment.
The aim behind the new G-Class is to make the elegance and high quality of the vehicle even more obvious, for an even more striking appearance. “The new G-Class is setting the bar higher still in all relevant areas – in terms of performance both on and off the road as well as with regard to comfort and telematics. Our ‘longest-serving’ model series is therefore ideally equipped to continue its success story. In short, the new ‘G’ is still a ‘G’, only better,” stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
The further evolved design of the G-Class follows the philosophy of Sensual Purity and at the same time remains true to the character of the original. The design once again confirms that this Mercedes-Benz off-roader is an icon, and that no other has the same, up-to-date on-road capabilities together with superior off-road capabilities. It is both hot and cool at the same time.
“The G-Class is the measure of all SUVs. We have given due deference to the character of this icon, and yet exercised puristic reduction to create the transition to modern luxury,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. The distinctive door handles and the characteristic closing sound, the robust exterior protective strip, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door and the prominent indicator lights remain typical features. Other typical G-Class features include the plain, rectangular tail lights, which are now contoured and mounted to the body.
The door hinges positioned on the outside and the surface-mounted bonnet are also carried over to the new generation. With the latest update, the off-road icon – which has been continually enhanced technically over the decades but visually has hardly changed – is making the leap into a new era – both in terms of technology and form. The new G-Class is 53 mm longer and 64 mm wider, and now has even greater presence, both on and off the road.
Tauter surfaces, precise transitions, intelligently conceived details
More than ever, the new G-Class appears to be cast from a single piece. All surfaces have a more taut design and are have more tension, while the surface quality has been taken to an even higher level. This results in narrower, more precise gaps and more harmonious transitions. In addition, the wheel arches and bumpers form a more integral part of the body and thus look less like add‑o n features.
Off-road capabilities were already incorporated into the design during the development of the first G-Class. A principle that has proved successful to this day. The chamfered sides of the square headlamps help to ensure that the body and headlamps are less susceptible to damage when driving on rough terrain or through narrow stretches, for example. All lighting functions including the daytime running lamps are integrated into single headlamp units. Customers have a choice between LED headlamps and high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps.
Distinctive grille meets an iconic spare wheel
The front section is characterised by the striking radiator grille in a three-louvre design with painted inlays and a large, central Mercedes star, steep A-pillars and a flat windscreen. The louvre carriers and inlays are individually styled depending on the equipment line, and e.g. painted in obsidian black. As optional equipment the inlays are available in high-gloss chrome. In this case the louvre carrier is in matt iridium silver.
Clear lines and large surfaces characterise the side view. The classic, short overhangs emphasise the balanced proportions of the off-roader. The side skirts, beltline and drainage strip take a parallel course. The side rub strip, which is semi-integrated like the tail lights, is just as functional and horizontal at the height of the door handles. On request this is available with pinstripes or in a striated or brushed aluminium look. Depending on the choice of optional equipment, running boards make access and egress easier.
Thanks to its wide track, a slightly trapezoidal rear window and prominent wheel arch linings, the G-Class appears very four-square when viewed from the rear. The rear fog lamp is integrated into the LED tail light. A large door hinged on the left carries the spare wheel and gives access to the luggage or cargo area. As a distinctive feature, the designers retained the external hinges on the rear door and all other doors.
The reversing camera is now positioned below the spare wheel, so that the driver has a clear view to the rear and can manoeuvre with millimetric precision. Unusual detail: for maximum reliability, the camera is waterproofed and therefore also protected against soiling; owing to the 100-millimetre increase in the fording depth of the new G-Class to 700 mm, it may be below the waterline in extreme cases.
The new, optional electric glass sliding roof not only gives pleasant ventilation to the interior, but also a view to the outside thanks to tinted glass. And should it start to rain, the roof automatically moves to the tilted position. In the event of an accident, the PRE-SAFE® system closes the glass roof if a rollover threatens.
Customers have a choice of eleven new exterior paint finishes, e.g. brilliant blue or designo mystic white bright. 24 paint colours are available, of which nine are metallic and 13 are designo manufaktur colours.
Interior: as luxurious as it is authentic
While the exterior maintains the iconic, classic look, the interior of the G-Class has undergone a fundamental modern redesign which reinterprets the genes of the classic vehicle to reflect the exterior. With its off-road character and top-class luxury appointments, the G-Class has always combined two extremes into a harmonious symbiosis. Unmistakable at first glance and from the first touch, only high-quality materials are used. Every detail is finished by hand with the utmost care.
Getting into the G-Class reveals that numerous design features from the exterior have been transposed into the interior. The shape of the round headlamps, for instance, which is reflected in the side air vents. Or the design of the iconic indicators, found again in the shape of the loudspeakers. The driver, co-driver and passengers in the second row benefit from the increase in width, and therefore the more spacious interior of the off-roader. Hallmarks of the G-Class include the grab handle in front of the front passenger and the chrome-highlighted switches for the three differential locks. Both have been further improved and retained as characteristic features. In an accident the front passenger airbag deploys above the grab handle.
The centre console benefits from the design freedom and has been completely newly configured to meet the functional requirements. The touch-sensitive Touch Controls on the steering wheel respond to swiping motions in the same way as the surface of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.
The very clearly arranged and completely redesigned instrument panel features timeless tube-look analogue dials as standard. In other words, fans of classic round instruments will certainly not be disappointed in the new G-Class. As in the new E-Class and S-Class, an instrument cluster in the form of a large display showing virtual instruments in the driver’s direct field of vision and a central display above the centre console is available as an option. In this case the two 12.3-inch displays blend visually into a Widescreen Cockpit beneath a shared glass cover. Drivers can choose between three different styles for the displays – “Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive” – and also select relevant information and views according to their individual needs.
Thanks to haptic impulses and audible feedback from the on-board speakers, drivers can use the touchpad with controller in the centre console without taking their eyes off the road. The input options are rounded off by shortcut keys in front of the controller for frequently used operating tasks, and by the optional control panel for the driving assistance systems above the rotary light switch. The driver sits up close to the windscreen and enjoys good all-round visibility from behind the wheel.
Tasteful: high-quality materials
With its unmistakable character and high-quality appointments, the G-Class has always managed to combine off-road capability and luxury in a particularly harmonious way. Even in its standard specification, the G-Class’s timeless and authentic open-pore wood trim gives it an air of classical elegance. Its stylish details include the generous use of high-quality metal or carbon fibre trim, and its leather seats. The doors are very solid, clear evidence of that hallmark “G” functionality. A well-conceived stowage space concept with numerous stowage compartments e.g. in the armrest or in the rear doors ensures that everything has its place. There is now an illuminated compartment under the armrest for items such as a penknife or sunglasses. The adjustable backrest of the rear bench seat is free-standing for maximum variability. Ten adjustment stages from Comfort to Cargo allow maximum flexibility.
Schöckl proved
“Every G-Class must be put to the test on the Schöckl.” And this was the motto that headed the list of requirement specifications when it came to redesigning this classic among off-roaders. The Schöckl is the mountain just outside Graz in the Austrian state of Styria which Mercedes-Benz uses for test drives, and which every off-roader since the early development days of the “G” in the early 1970s has had to overcome. Which is why every “G” bears a certification mark in the form of a “Schöckl” on both sides at the base of its B-pillar.
The driver, co-driver and passengers benefit from the larger dimensions of the new G-Class. Legroom for the rear passengers has increased by 15 centimetres, and by 3.8 centimetres for the driver and co-driver.
The rear seats can be folded down to 60, 40 or 100 percent. The seats in the G-Class are equipped as standard with numerous convenience functions and are ergonomically designed, thus providing enhanced seating comfort and lateral support. Other features are e.g. the memory function for the front seats, front and rear seat heating and luxury head restraints in the front. This ride comfort can optionally be boosted still further with the Active Multicontour Seat package. In addition to the special multicontour seats, this encompasses such features as various massage functions, climate-controlled seats, and fast seat heating. This variant also offers electrically adjustable lumbar supports for the driver and front passenger. The side sections of the seat cushions and backrests of the active multicontour seats include integrated air chambers that fill or empty continuously depending on the driving dynamics, thus providing better support for the seating positions of driver and front passenger and, for example, offering more lateral support during cornering. The front seats of the Active Multicontour Seat Package are recommended by experts from the German spinal health organisation “Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.”.
Connectivity and digitisation using the latest technology is provided by the infotainment system COMAND Online included as standard. This begins with effortless integration of a smartphone into the onboard infotainment system. Phone calls can then be conveniently made via the Bluetooth® hands-free system.
Apple’s smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay® and Google’s Android Auto™ can also be used with COMAND Online. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay® or Android AutoTM interface.
Modern-style navigation
COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-drive navigation with topographical map display, 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. The system presents its content interactively and its features include an animated compass. COMAND Online uses the familiar traffic data service Live Traffic Information. This allows reception of up-to-date and precise traffic information in real time for an exact estimate of the time of arrival.
Audio playback is possible from various sources. For example via Bluetooth® or USB stick. COMAND Online also offers video playback and an integrated hotspot functionality for up to three mobile devices. It allows passengers in all seats to connect different WiFi-capable devices, such as laptop or tablet computers, to the internet.
Exquisite listening experience
The standard audio system features seven loudspeakers. The Burmester® surround sound system with 15 speakers and a 590 watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing is available as optional equipment. The listening experience is particularly remarkable in the low bass range, which has especially good sound resolution.
Mercedes me connect: a direct connection to the vehicle
Under the name “Mercedes me connect”, Mercedes-Benz offers an extensive package of free standard services and Remote Online services via an on-board communication module. The range of services is being expanded continuously. The free basic services include Mercedes-Benz emergency call (eCall), Accident Recovery, Breakdown Management and Remote vehicle diagnostics.
The optional Remote Online services allow drivers to connect to their vehicle from anywhere and at any time e.g. by smartphone, to access vehicle information and to remotely activate a variety of functions. Since 1979 the G-Class has been the Mercedes-Benz SUV icon. Its unique DNA is stronger than time; is unimpressed by short-lived fashion trends it remains true to its roots. This also holds true for the new G-Class. In the international 360-degree campaign for the world premiere and market launch, Mercedes-Benz presents the new G-Class as a ground-breaking legend in off-road performance. Beyond this, the G also shows its on-road strengths and presents its enduring, timeless design. The motto of the campaign is accordingly “Stronger Than Time”. With this campaign, Mercedes-Benz makes it possible for customers and fans to enter the fascinating world of this iconic off-road vehicle and discover why the G-Class has been enthralling people around the globe for almost 40 years.
“How do you stage the presentation of a new edition of a legend? We have found a compelling answer to that question with the campaign ‘Stronger Than Time’. It demonstrates in an up-to-date manner the unmistakable DNA and the timelessness of the G‑Class: strong, self-assured and serenely superior”, said Dr Gunnar Güthenke, Head of the Off-Road Vehicle product unit at Mercedes-Benz. “In its impressive history, this iconic vehicle has evolved from a pure off-roader to an icon of the postmodern world. It is quite simply stronger than time and is souvereign above every fashion trend.”
At the center of the digitally dominated campaign with its central hub at https://www.mercedes-benz.com/strongerthantime you will find three lifestyles: “Amber Rock”, “Green Lava” and “Blue Night”.
With 35 campaign motifs and a 2:45‑minute video with three cut-offs, Mercedes-Benz showcases the lifestyles with powerful images, radiating self-assurance and supreme mastery. Rich, metallic blue tones embody a modern, cool purist urbanity in the motifs of the “Blue Night” lifestyle. These impressions are intensified by the reflected lights of the city at dusk on a rainy night.
Mercedes-Benz accompanied the world premiere of the new G-Class on 14 January 2018 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the world’s largest installation in synthetic resin. An amber-coloured block of synthetic resin weighing 44.4 tonnes encloses a G‑Class from the first year of production, 1979 – as an expressive image of the off-road legend’s timelessness. The presentation establishes an association with insects preserved in amber. The DNA of the first G‑Class is permanently preserved this way and passed on from generation to generation. Following the Detroit Motor Show, the block will also be on show in other markets to tie in with the G‑Class market launch.
Milestones and superlatives of a legend – the web special
Since November 2017 people all over the world have been able to discover the uniqueness of the G-Class on social media platforms and at https://www.mercedes-benz.com/strongerthantime. Under the hashtag #strongerthantime you can become part of the campaign yourself. Selected stories are told in the web special “Stronger Than Time”, which is embedded in the G‑Class portal. The “DNA of the G‑Class” feature provides interesting facts from around 40 years of the G‑Class. Under “The new G‑Class” you can experience the new G in all its facets. The column informs about the improved off-road and onroad performance as well as the timeless design of the all-terrain vehicle. The chapter “Strong Stories” tells the unique and varied stories of the old and new G‑C lass.
Iconic life worlds – moving images and print motifs
The 45-second trailer for the publicity campaign has been available on social media platforms since early January: https://youtu.be/QtkhrTeh1Sg. In impressive images, underscored by dramatic music, the video shows how the G‑C lass has kept its unique DNA intact over generations. This is how a timeless vehicle evolved from it to become a legend over the years. In the official campaign video, which can also be seen on social media channels at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iGFH5HbWGM, the different lifeworlds are focused on in individual image sequences.
In the classic printed media the G-Class is to be shown in impressive images as of 15 January 2018. As in the online communication, the printed media campaign with its varied imagery shows that the G‑Class is an icon for more than one life world. “Amber Rock”, “Green Lava” and “Blue Night”: the imagery relating to off-road capability, design and onroad performance incorporates natural elements such as rock and lava formations, as well as water which – like the G‑Class – are “stronger than time”. The tonality of the campaign reflects the character of the off-road legend: powerful messages in impressive visual worlds.
The idea and conception of the campaign is from Mercedes-Benz creative agency antoni. The elbkind agency was responsible for implementing the social media campaign.
Stylish aesthete, robust off-roader or extrovert SUV – the new Limited Edition models of the G‑Class exemplify how versatile the all-terrain icon still is just before the end of its period of manufacture. A special feature is the embossed emblem of a test scene “Schöckl proved since 1979” on the centre armrest. Comprehensively equipped both inside and outside, the special models are each limited to 463 units in line with the internal model series code. The Limited Edition is available as the G 350 d and G 350 d Professional (combined fuel consumption: 9.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 261 g/km) and also as the G 500 (combined fuel consumption: 12.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km). The exclusive special models are now available for ordering and will reach the showrooms in January 2018.
At 1445 metres, the Schöckl is far from being the highest peak in the Alps. And yet the local mountain of Graz is both famous and infamous, especially among off-road fans: for many years, not far from where the G‑Class is produced, Mercedes-Benz has used an extremely challenging test track on the mountain. This is commemorated by the embossed Schöckl badge on the centre armrest of the G-Class Limited Edition – a special kind of Alpine accolade. The emblem is bordered by the lettering “Schöckl proved since 1979” and “Limited Edition 1 of 463”. Another feature shared by the three special models is the “Limited Edition” inscription as an emblem on the body on the A-pillar. G 350 d and G 500 also bear the same inscription in illuminated form in the door sill.
There are key differences between the three models in terms of positioning and equipment specification. The G 350 d Limited Edition is the aesthete among the brothers. Its paint finish is in designo mocha black metallic. A particular eye-catcher is the outer protective strip with an exclusive trim insert with a brushed aluminium look. The standard specification includes the Sports package with Exterior Stainless Steel package[1] and 48.3 cm (19-inch) 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels in titanium grey, the Chrome package[2], heat-insulating dark-tinted glass for rear side windows and rear window, heated windscreen and electric sliding and tilting sunroof.
The interior of the G 350 d Limited Edition indulges its passengers with upholstery in saddle brown designo nappa leather. The seats are in this single colour, while the dashboard and AMG Performance steering wheel feature a two-colour scheme in saddle brown/black. Matching this is contrasting topstitching in light brown. The standard specification also includes black designo piano lacquer trim, Exclusive package[3], Loading Protection package[4], leather-covered grab handle on the roof liner and Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system. The intelligent assistance systems, likewise installed ex-factory, include garage door opener, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist and Parking package[5].
The G 350 d Professional Limited Edition is positioned as a robust off-roader. The paint finish of this special model is in china blue. The external distinguishing features include a steel front bumper, protective grilles for the front turn signal lamps, front mud flaps and Professional Offroad package[6] including roof rack. Exclusive to the interior of this special model is the fabric covering of the centre sections of the seats in the classic diamond design of previous G-models. The standard specification includes heated seats for driver and front passenger, radio with Bluetooth and navigation, heated windscreen, Loading Protection package4 and auxiliary heater including remote control.
The role of the extrovert is embodied by the G 500 Limited Edition. Its paint finish in designo platinum magno contrasts with black add-on parts such as the trim insert in the outer protective strip. Painted in magno black are three louvres of the radiator grille and the spare wheel cover. In addition to Chrome package2 and Sports package[7], the standard equipment specification also includes heat-insulating dark-tinted glass for rear side windows and rear window, Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system, TV tuner, heated windscreen, Loading Protection package4 and auxiliary heater including remote control. Installed as standard are garage door opener, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist and Parking package5.
The special interior features include upholstery in black designo nappa leather with white topstitching, AMG Performance steering wheel in black DINAMICA microfibre/nappa leather, black designo piano lacquer trim, Chrome package2, Exclusive package3 and leather-covered grab handle on the roof liner.

Fans of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 own up to five extravagant body colours in option “colour package”. These “crazy colour” are now available for the collectors showcase and model car fans alike. Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH offers the Ikon of SUVs in 1:18 in the five eye catching special body colours: AMG solarbeam, sunsetbeam, aliengreen, tomatored, and galacticbeam.
The name says it all: “Crazy Colours” is a special colour option package for the G-Class. Those who want to make their G63 individual with an eye-catching effect can choose between five exclusive exterior body-paints. These “crazy colours” also have individual characteristics. For example, the sunsetbeam remains one of a beautiful sunset, while the galacticbeam, depending on incidence of light, shows shades of blue. Attachments parts, such as mirrors, front and rear bumpers, wheel arch extensions, the ring of the spare wheel cover and the roof, however, are painted obsidian black.
Mercedes-Benz GmbH implements these fresh cool crazy colours in a 1:18 sized model car: in a limited model series of the Mercedes-AMG G 63, AMG solarbeam, sunsetbeam, aliengreen, tomatored, and galacticbeam are all available. There will be exactly 463 units pro “crazy colour”, matching the internal code W463. “1 of 463“ will be indicated on the underbody of each one of these special edition models.
Made from resin, these exclusive miniatures were created in collaboration with model car specialists GT Spirit. Mercedes-AMG provided original design data for the development of the models. The level of detail is high. For example, the selection lever is not printed but displayed in three dimensions. Even the seats are accurately modelled according to the original vehicle – the distance between the honeycomb stitching is to scale. The five limited Mercedes-AMG G 63 models possess numerous options and consist of up to 100 parts.
These exclusive model car versions of the G 63 in “crazy clours” are available at Mercedes-Benz sales partners.
Only a G-Class can be better than a G-Class. This is the credo followed by the developers of Mercedes-Benz and they present the new-series show car G 500 4×4².
As a model brother of the G 63 AMG 6×6 the new “G” blends all the advantages of the model series with a considerably increased performance. The engine compartment houses a completely new V8 engine with a displacement of four litres, direct injection and biturbocharging. Next toV8 power there is a newly-developed variable chassis , which offers a perfect symbiosis of sporty dynamism and relaxed comfort on the road and off it. The new G 500 4×4² always reaches the highest offroad performance, thanks to the permanent four-wheel drive and the proven portal axles.
Only a G-Class can be better than a G-Class. This is the credo followed by the developers with the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6, and they are now stepping up a gear with the G 500 4×4². The basic recipe for this overcomer of everything is simple: take the superior all-wheel-drive powertrain including portal axles from the 6×6 – take away one axle – and blend it all with a newly-developed variable chassis and the series-production G-Class body. A large pinch of V8 power with 310 kW (422 hp), a set of 22-inch 325/55 R 22-sized wheels, carbon-fibre body parts and then just gourmet ingredients from the seductive designo Exclusive range for the interior – and the 5-star menu for all off-road enthusiasts is ready.
A new addition to the extreme G-Class model family: the G 63 AMG 6×6 has a model brother in the form of the G 500 4×4². The near-series show car is a new highlight in the superlative-rich history of the G-Class and blends all the advantages of the model series. The series-production models of the G-Class supply the unshakeable foundations in the form of the body and ladder-type frame, which compensate for the considerably increased performance of the G 500 4×4² without any problem and also without any type of reinforcements. The G 63 AMG 6×6 donates an amended version of the ruggedly determined permanent all-wheel-drive powertrain with portal axles. The engine compartment houses a completely new V8 engine with a displacement of four litres, direct injection and biturbocharging. Also new is the chassis with dual spring/damper struts and adjustable damping. Finally, in the interior, the G 500 4×4² occupants enjoy comfort and an ambience on a par with a luxury saloon.
New engine offers V8 biturbo power
The 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine in the G 500 4×4² stands out for its sublime power delivery, the targeted lightweight construction, as well as its high efficiency. The newly developed eight-cylinder features twin turbochargers which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration – what is known as the ‘hot inside V’. The advantages lie in the compact engine design, the optimum response and the low exhaust gas emissions. The piezo direct petrol injection used exclusively at Mercedes-Benz is responsible for the mixture formation. The spray-guided combustion process has been enhanced in the third generation to meet all future statutory requirements. In series production, the highly efficient and economical 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine would meet the Euro 6 emission standard, including the maximum particulate emissions level that will not take effect until 2016.
The V8 crankcase consists of an aluminium alloy and ensures maximum strength with the lowest possible weight. The cylinder walls in NANOSLIDE® technology are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinder liners, minimise the inner friction and thus the fuel required and facilitate maximum mileages. NANOSLIDE® was developed by Daimler starting in the year 2000 and has so far been used successfully and reliably in over 200,000 engines since 2006.
Twin sidepipes on both sides in front of the rear wheels modulate the G-typical sound of the G 500 4×4² and master the entire repertoire of potent sports cars – from soft mumbling in neutral through sonorous humming in the partial-load range to emphatic booming when accelerating under full load. A welcome side effect of the sidepipes: there is improved off-road capability, because in the rear area there are none of the usual rear silencers, which could otherwise restrict the angle of departure.
Things are really looking up both on and off-road
In view of the key data for the chassis and powertrain it seems more than logical that the off-road world starts for the G 500 4×4² where other vehicles capitulate. But it is surprising that the new “G” puts in an absolutely convincing performance on the asphalt. Due to the considerably wider track of the portal axles compared with the series-production car (+299 mm), the large 22-inch 325/55 R 22-sized wheels and the adjustable damping with its Sport mode, the enhanced G-Class drives through bends so dynamically that the occupants feel as though they are in a sports car rather than a cross-country vehicle. This also applies to tours on unsurfaced slopes or snow-bound roads, in which case the performance of a high-powered rally car kicks in.
For anyone preferring to use the G 500 4×4² off the beaten track, the optional off-road size 37 x 12.5 x 18-inch MT tyres are recommended. Permanent all-wheel drive, an off-road reduction in the transfer case, portal axles and three differentials lockable whilst on the move will not be found on conventional cross-country vehicles. This results in merciless driving dynamics in all conditions. Even the highest sand dunes are stormed by the show car with ease, whilst rocky terrain is scaled like a chamois, and water is driven through without any problems.
The portal axles developed for versatile applications supplement the off-road portfolio of Mercedes-Benz and are the technical highlight of the G 500 4×4² show car. As opposed to conventional rigid axles, here the wheels are not at the height of the centre of the axle, instead they are situated much further below on the axle heads due to the portal transmission. Therefore, on the G 500 4×4² the ground clearance rises to 450 millimetres and the fording depth – or rather the diving depth – to 1000 millimetres. Here are the off-road data in comparison with the series-production Mercedes-Benz G 500:
G 500 4×4² | Long-wheelbase G 500 | |
Ground clearance | 450 mm | 210 mm |
Angle of approach/departure f/r | 52° / 54° | 36° /27° |
Breakover angle | 47° | 21° |
Tipping angle | 30° | 28° |
Fording depth | 1000 mm | 600 mm |
Slope climbing ability | 100% | 100% |
Wheelbase | 2850 mm | 2850 mm |
Track, front/rear | 1774 mm | 1475 mm |
Wheel/tyre combination | 9.5 J x 22 325/55 R 22 |
7.5 J x 18 265/60 R 18 |
At the highest level: the portal axles’ tricks
But the portal axle design has yet more decisive advantages which render complex adjustments superfluous: through the unchanged position of the rigid axles in relation to the chassis, the anchorage points of the suspension, the steering connection and the position of the cardan shafts all remain identical. In addition, the reduction in the portal transmissions balances the huge rolling circumferences in both the off-road and the on-road tyres. The gear ratios, speedometer drive and ABS sensor system also remain unchanged. This reduction in the hub drives also has the effect that the drive torque is first set at the wheel and thus the mechanical loads in the entire powertrain, in particular for the drive shafts, are reduced.
Mobile declaration of independence – the chassis
The chassis is fundamentally based on the series-production G model and offers a perfect symbiosis of sporty dynamism and relaxed comfort, both on the road and off it. The new damper adjustment, derived from rally sport, has a decisive effect here. Two spring/damper struts running in parallel are used per wheel. One spring/damper strut works conventionally with set damper characteristics. The second spring strut has electronically controlled adjustable damping, which thus varies the entire damping behaviour depending on the current driving situation. With this set-up, considerable kingpin inclination is possible between the settings SPORT and COMFORT, which the driver can select using a button in the centre console. The switching times between the two modes are record-breakingly low, at 15 milliseconds.
During dynamic cornering the sporty setting performs sterling work, because the significantly tauter connection of the chassis allows higher cornering speeds. If the driver is more in the mood for pleasurable cruising, the COMFORT setting effortlessly dampens all the unevenness in the ground. In extreme situations such as abrupt evasive manoeuvres, the system automatically switches over to the firm setting for the sake of maximum possible handling safety. The comfortable setting also helps during off-road sessions, because the wheels retain better surface contact. Even on heavily contoured off-road terrain, every surface traction possibility can be utilised effectively.
Company with unlimited liability: beadlock wheels with MT tyres
Optimised tyres are available for the G 500 4×4², especially for punishing off-road trips: mud/terrain tyres (M/T) in size 37 x 12.5 x 18 inches on special beadlock wheels. Normally the usual wheel/tyre combinations refuse a traction-promoting lowering of the air pressure for journeys on sand, for example, to 0.5 bar. Here 1.0 bar is the lowest limit, because beneath this low pressure the tyres can come off during steering manoeuvres or ingression of sand can infiltrate the sealing surface between the tyre and wheel rim and thus leads to a slow puncture. Not so with the G 500 4×4². Here special two-piece 18-inch beadlock wheels are used. With this type of design, during assembly the tyre is pinched in so tightly between the two wheel halves and an inner beadlock ring that it cannot slip off the rim and no sand can enter, even in the case of total loss of air.
Should the chassis ever still come into harsh ground contact in spite of an anticipatory driving style and the excellent ground clearance, the developers have displayed far-sightedness here, too, and integrated a robust, two-piece underguard in stainless steel. These means that the most important assemblies in the front and rear area are well protected against impact and more severe shocks.
Sporty luxury squared
In visual terms the G 500 4×4² raises no doubts as to its passion. The voluminous tyres, the huge distance to the ground, the height of nearly 2.25 metres with a width of virtually 2.10 metres and the clear, straight design command respect right from the first glance. Further highlights: the trim with the integral LED light strips above the windscreen and the elaborate partially painted wheel-arch flarings – both in fine carbon fibre – plus the front bumper on the G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models.
The interior appointments make a sportily luxurious impression. The G 500 4×4² offers an exclusive ambience with the designo Exclusive package. The seat bolsters and head restraints as well as the dashboard, centre console and armrests in the doors are styled in black designo leather with white contrasting topstitching. The seat surfaces and door panels are covered in DINAMICA microfibre and impress with their attractive diamond-design quilting. In addition to this there is DINAMICA trim for the roof liner and the body pillars.
The hub of the “G” world is in Graz
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class development department located in Graz is the centre of competence where all things “G” are concerned and is responsible for the development and series support of the legendary cross-country vehicle. Furthermore, Graz in Austria has been the production location for all civilian and commercial G-Class vehicles since 1979. Whether and when the decision on series production of the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² will be made depends on the reaction which the near-series show car receives.
Scheduled to make its grand debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month, Mercedes-Benz has released the first official photo of the G 500 4×4² show car.
This G-Wagon was first spied undergoing testing in November 2014, and then again this January. At the time, the assumption was that it would be related to the G63 AMG 6×6, but instead of being badged with the G63 AMG Moniker, it is instead being called the G 500 4×4². What this means is that it will be powered by the standard G 500’s 5.5-liter V8 petrol engine.

ARMORING SPECIFICATIONS:
The Mercedes-Benz G-class will receive a complete overhaul with extensive changes for its 2017 sale year. The facelift to the 35-year-old model will be so major that Mercedes says it will, in effect, be a new car.
The big push is to increase the car’s width for greater stability, to accommodate new front suspension and to liberate greater interior space for new, broader seats front and rear, while maintaining the character and iconic look of the current model.
“We have to be careful with our heritage,” says Mercedes SUV boss, Andreas Zygan. “We offer something really special. Last year – the 34th – was the best ever for G-class sales. It’s amazing, and one of our idols.”
The codename for the G-class remains W463, but the structure is being extensively reworked. More aluminium is being added and it is being made around 100mm wider, taking the width of the car to around 1860mm.
The change to the structure is also being made with a view to slashing the kerb weight; a reduction of more than 200kg is being touted by insiders. The current G350 weighs in at a hefty 2570kg.
The G-class’s new front suspension will use a three or four-link set-up, while a more modern electro-mechanical steering system is also being fitted.
The exterior design will retain the right-angled looks of today’s car with a near-vertical windscreen. Some inspiration could also be taken from the futuristic Ener-G-Force concept car from the 2012 Los Angeles motor show. Insiders said it not only previewed the new GL but possibly also the next G-class.
The interior overhaul will focus not only on increasing space but also comfort and quality, with interior fittings from the C-class set to make it into the venerable off-roader.
Technology levels will also be increased, with features such as LED lights and more driver assistance and safety systems set to be fitted.
The engine range will include the new 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder petrol (codenamed M256) and diesel (OM656) motors that Mercedes is working on ahead of their debut in the 2016 E-class.
In the G-class, a petrol unit with more than 360bhp and a diesel producing over 300bhp are being touted. The engines will be paired with Mercedes’ new nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox as standard, resulting in vastly improved economy.
Range-topping AMG variants, which account for half of all G-class sales, are set to follow the launch of the standard models.

We recently brought you news that the Mercedes G-Class will continue its production with Magna through 2016, and now we have a glimpse of what is in the works for the G-Class. Last summer, we saw a G55 with large air intakes testing in the desert. Today we have spy photos of a second prototype with similarly large air intakes undergoing winter weather testing around the Arctic. In addition to the AMG prototype was a standard Mercedes-Benz G550, likely for comparison sake.
The stealthy spy photogs over at Motor Authority offered up information about the sound of the engines in addition to taking revealing photos. Spy photographers confirmed that the prototype was far louder than the standard G55 AMG which has been dropped for the 2012 model year.
As always, as more news comes in on engine specifics, we will keep you posted.
