With its new high-tech combustion engine in the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz is systemically continuing its CASE strategy which through the areas of networking (Connected), autonomous driving (Autonomous), flexible use (Shared & Services) and electric powertrains (Electric) is designed to turn the car into a platform for future mobility concepts and a space that offers a digital experience (for more information see page 8). A key step in this is the introduction of a new four-cylinder petrol engine featuring a specific output in excess of 100 kW and an intelligent combination of state-of-the-art engine technology and partial electrification through 48 V technology. With an output of 220 kW/299 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm, it is pushing forward into performance areas which were previously the reserve of our high-capacity, six-cylinder engines. At the same time, it consumes significantly less fuel than corresponding six-cylinder engines (for more technical details see page 6). The innovative 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission supports both a dynamic and a fuel-saving driving style.

High performance with the characteristics of a hybrid

The engine’s special features include twin-scroll turbochargers, belt-driven 48 V starter-alternator (EQ Boost) and electric 48 V water pump. In conjunction with the modern on-board 48 V technology, the starter-alternator enables outstanding efficiency by making hybrid functions available. In practical terms these are seen in such features as

  • easy start, in which the engine starts and accelerates almost imperceptibly,
  • boost – this function can support the combustion engine in the engine speed range up to 2500 rpm with additional output of up to 10 kW and 150 Nm of torque from the electric motor,
  • recuperation of up to 12 kW when braking,
  • operation within favourable engine characteristics,
  • gliding with automatic engine switch-off when the driving conditions permit this.

Further new additions to the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet range include the model E 220 d 4MATIC (fuel consumption (combined) for Coupé [figures for Cabriolet in square brackets]: 4.8 l/100 km [5.1 l/100 km]; combined CO2 emissions: 126 g/km [133 g/km]), plus the E 200 4MATIC (fuel consumption (combined) for Coupé [figures for Cabriolet in square brackets]: 7.0 l/100 km [7.3 l/100 km]; combined CO2 emissions: 158 g/km [164 g/km]).

Even more individual

In addition to the extended model range, the E-Class Coupé now also offers additional highlights for individualisation. New features include two paint finishes in rubellite red and diamond silver as well as light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim elements.

The E-Class Cabriolet can be given a particularly sporty touch with the optional new Night package. It comprises:

  • front bumper or AMG front apron with trim element in high-gloss black,
  • diamond radiator grille with integral Mercedes star and single louvre in high-gloss black,
  • exterior mirror housings in high-gloss black,
  • chrome trim element in the rear bumper in high-gloss black,
  • depending on standard equipment, 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in black with a high-sheen finish, or 19-inch 6-spoke light-alloy wheels, also painted in black with a high-sheen finish, with mixed-size tyres, or in conjunction with the AMG Line exterior, 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, with mixed-size tyres, optionally 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish.

Even when it comes to the vehicle key, both the Coupé and Cabriolet boast a focus on individualisation. As such there is a choice of high-gloss vehicle key in white or black with decorate frame in either high-gloss chrome or matt chrome (only for the white variants).

Also new is the Comfort Connectivity package. It provides users of Mercedes me with the advantages of special services in the areas of maintenance and convenience. Furthermore, it provides support with Accident Recovery and Breakdown Management. And with the Concierge Service there is always a personal assistant to hand.

SMS notification in the event of parking damage

The functions of the Anti-Theft Protection package have also been extended. While previously being able to sound an alarm in the event of unauthorised entry into the vehicle interior or a change in the vehicle position, now the sensors are also able to detect when another vehicle touches the vehicle, for example when manoeuvring. In such a case it notifies the driver or owner immediately about possible parking damage by sending an SMS message to a predefined mobile phone number.

On-board wellness and fitness programme

Like the S-Class, the Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet models of the E-Class also provide ENERGIZING comfort control as an option. Developed by Mercedes-Benz, this optional extra links various comfort systems in the vehicle, including climate control, ambience lighting, massage and fragrancing functions, and allows customers to configure a specific wellness set-up to suit their mood or needs. This enhances physical comfort and performance on the road. ENERGIZING comfort can be experienced in all seats, depending on the equipment level.

Six perfectly coordinated programmes are available to choose from:

  • Freshness
  • Warmth
  • Vitality
  • Joy
  • Comfort
  • Training (three training modes – muscle relaxation, muscle activation and balance – each with several exercises)

The programmes all run for ten minutes. They are visualised on the media display with colour graphics, and backed by suitable music.

In-Car Office: the office goes mobile

With the “Office function in the car” service, the driver and front passenger of an E-Class can now use certain office functions directly in the vehicle and access important data – almost as if they were in their office. For example, the service uses the locations of calendar entries and automatically transfers these to the car’s navigation system. The user can also dial into a telephone conference on the basis of a calendar entry. The system automatically detects the required PIN access code and simultaneously dials it.

The intelligence required for the service is stored directly in the infotainment system of the vehicle and in the backend. The vehicle just needs to be equipped with COMAND Online and have an active data connection.

Under the microscope

New M 264 four-cylinder petrol engine: sporty specific output

Mercedes-Benz is bringing to the road a new generation of combustion engines featuring pioneering technologies. These include a four-cylinder petrol engine boasting high efficiency which benefits environmentally friendly power delivery.

A key member of the comprehensively redeveloped engine family from Mercedes-Benz is the new four-cylinder petrol engine with a specific output in excess of 100 kW. It advances into output regions which were previously the reserve of our high-capacity six-cylinder engines. At the same time, it consumes significantly less fuel than a corresponding six-cylinder engine. The engine’s special features include twin-scroll turbochargers, belt-driven 48 V starter-alternator (EQ Boost) and electric 48 V water pump.

Spontaneous output at any time

In the interests of high power output and a spontaneous engine response, Mercedes-Benz has opted for twin-scroll turbocharging. Unlike conventional systems, a twin-scroll turbocharger merges the exhaust gas ducts of cylinder pairs in the flow-optimised manifold. This turbocharging concept with systematic cylinder flow separation produces high torque in the low rpm range together with high specific output.

A further-improved intake manifold with extremely short air paths and an exceptionally compact compressor housing additionally ensure spontaneous engine response and a fast reaction to accelerator pedal movements. The twin-scroll turbocharger has an electric wastegate actuator, which allows fast changes of the charge-air pressure.

To reduce exhaust emissions, use is made of tried-and-tested piezo injectors with a good mixture preparation, a further-improved combustion chamber and a particulate filter for petrol engines. Further efficiency measures include intake CAMTRONIC and a friction loss reduction package.

48 V electrical system and starter-alternator enable hybrid functions

In the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, the new petrol engine is combined with a 48 V electrical system, which is used for the belt-driven starter-alternator (EQ Boost) and the electric water pump. The fundamental advantages of a 48 V on-board electrical system: it offers four times the power of a 12 V system at identical currents, but avoids the additional safety architecture of a high-voltage electrical system.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the belt-driven starter-alternator, the 48 V on-board electrical system enables the key hybrid functions of “recuperation”, “boost” and “coasting” to be implemented for the first time without high-voltage components. As a result, significant fuel savings are made possible.

The belt-driven starter-alternator is coupled with the internal combustion engine in a manner similar to how the alternator is commonly connected. The system therefore uses existing generator mounting points and does not interfere with the design of the powertrain. In addition, such a starter concept is so durable that the engine can be switched off much more often and whenever it is not needed: whether during decelerating or coasting, i.e. when rolling to save fuel at higher speeds, as soon as drivers take their foot off the accelerator.

Apart from reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the 48 V on-board electrical system also brings about increased comfort. This comes as a result of the 48 V on-board electrical system being able to crank the internal combustion engine to idle speed very smoothly. This benefits NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) and the transition when the engine starts is even quieter: the engine restarts as if it had never been off.

The integration of a 48 V on-board electrical system also offers advantages for further functions in the vehicle in future. On account of the higher voltage, the same power requires only a quarter of the current of a conventional system. This means that the wiring may be thinner and thus lighter – which indirectly contributes to saving fuel. The 48 V on-board electrical system also paves the way for the further expansion of infotainment and assistance systems.

It also offers the intelligence of the E‑Class family with full smartphone integration, Widescreen Cockpit and the latest driver assistance systems with the option of, among other things, partially automated driving. Powerful engines with low exhaust emissions and comfortable suspensions with selective damping provide the guarantee of a sporty and agile driving experience.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

After the world’s most intelligent executive saloon, the Estate and the All‑Terrain, the successful E‑Class family now welcomes another new member: the Coupé. “With its clear, aesthetic lines, our new E‑Class Coupé appeals equally to heart and mind. It condenses contemporary luxury, agile sportiness and high-tech engineering into an automotive personality with esprit, offering exclusive, refined driving pleasure,” says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

Based technically on the Saloon, the sportily exclusive Coupé marks a next step in the evolution of the Mercedes-Benz design language. With its perfect proportions, the new Coupé exhibits a puristic, surface-accentuated design with reduced lines and sensual forms. Both hot and cool, the reduced design idiom represents beauty and elegance while emphasising the Coupé’s sporty and luxurious personality.

The coupé-esque proportions typical of Mercedes-Benz are characterised by a distinctive front end with low-positioned sports grille and central star, a long bonnet with powerdomes, a rearward-shifted, squat greenhouse and a muscular rear end. The dynamic looks are underlined by four frameless side windows and the absence of a B‑pillar. With these clear forms, the design of the Coupé conveys an air of luxury and style alike.

World premiere: welcome feature of tail lamp

Equally typical of a Mercedes coupé are the two-part, extremely flat LED tail lamps, which, in combination with LED MULTIBEAM headlamps, celebrate the world premiere of a welcome feature. When the vehicle is opened, the taillight LEDs illuminate successively from the centre of the vehicle outwards. On locking the vehicle, the light sequence runs in the opposite direction. Both are additionally combined with an up and down dimming feature. This taillight show welcomes and says goodbye to the vehicle user similarly to the familiar welcome feature of the blue optical-fibre show in the front headlamp.

Thanks to innovative crystal optics, the tail lamps also have a brilliant appearance reminiscent of the glow of a jet engine.

Sporty, luxurious interior with refined details

The interior of the new E-Class Coupé embodies the synthesis of sporty emotion and luxurious intelligence.

The two optionally available high-resolution and brilliant 12.3‑i nch displays – unique in this segment – are merged under a single lens to produce a Widescreen Cockpit that appears to float in space. The key design element, it emphasises the width, as does the fascia-spanning trim, which terminates with a dynamic sweep in the door panel. Positioned in the driver’s direct field of vision, the instrument cluster shows virtual instruments, which can be selected by the driver in three different styles, “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”, depending on which information and views the driver considers relevant.

The entry-level model combines two round dials and a 17.8 cm colour display cluster (1000 x 600 pixel resolution) with a central display with a 21.3 cm screen diagonal (960 x 540 pixels). The round dials, instrument cluster and central display are installed in a single frame with a high-gloss piano-lacquer look.

A decidedly sporty note is set by the air vents, the form of which is heavily influenced by the look of a turbine engine. They are styled down to the smallest detail and fully finished in silver shadow.

Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel enable the driver to control the instrument cluster and multimedia system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Additional controls come in the form of a touchpad with controller in the centre console, which can also recognise handwriting, plus the LINGUATRONIC voice control system. There are also direct-access buttons for controlling the air conditioning, for example, and for convenient activation and deactivation of certain driver assistance systems.

The avant-garde yet highly luxurious seats in the Coupé take their cue from the Saloon. The sporty individual-seat characteristics find their distinctive impression in all four seats. A wealth of extremely high-grade design details bear witness to the superlative standard of a sporty luxury coupé.

High-grade materials and contemporary colour landscapes come together to create a sporty, contemporary luxury. The attractive appointments in yacht blue in combination with macchiato beige lend the vehicle a cool, exclusive yachting look. Especially for the E-Class Coupé, there is a choice of two new innovative, light wood trim packages in open-pore and high-gloss finishes. Precisely executed seams give emphasis to the seat design of each equipment line. The seat upholstery layout and range of colours of the AMG Line are more consistent in appearance than ever. The sporty character is accentuated by strong colour contrasts of the leather appointments in black & classic red and black & white. The impressive range of exterior paint finishes is harmoniously matched to the contemporary interior colour scheme

The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the optionally available enhanced ambient lighting with 64 colours.

Diversity to suit every taste

Even the AVANTGARDE standard equipment package is abundantly configured. Alternatively, there is the AMG Line, which differs from AVANTGARDE by such features as front and rear bumpers as well as side skirts and larger AMG Styling wheels. The dots in the diamond radiator grille are chrome-plated, while the brake discs on the front axle are perforated. The interior boasts such features as seats in high-grade ARTICO/DINAMICA in black with grey contrasting topstitching, the Seat Comfort package and an AMG leather sports steering wheel. Additional individualisation options for both lines come courtesy of the Night package with a host of design details in high-gloss black and tinted side windows.

Larger and more luxurious

With a length of 4826 mm, a width of 1860 mm and a height of 1430 mm, the new E-Class Coupé clearly outstrips its predecessor in terms of length, width and height. The principal beneficiary of the wider track, with 1605 mm at the front (+67 mm) and 1609 mm at the rear (+68 mm), is the driving dynamics.

Performance with high-tech

Powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, all equipped with ECO start/stop and complying with the Euro 6 emissions standard, provide for lively performance and great fun behind the wheel. The available variants include a newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine.

At market launch, there will be an initial choice between one diesel and three petrol engines with a range of outputs from 135 kW (184 hp) to 245 kW (333 hp). Further engine variants and 4MATIC versions will follow.

New four-cylinder diesel engine

Designed to meet the future RDE limits, the four-cylinder diesel engine from the new family of Mercedes-Benz engines opens up a new dimension in efficiency. With a displacement of around two litres, the new diesel engine delivers 143 kW/194 hp, while the E 220 d impresses with a combined NEDC average consumption of 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of 106 grams per kilometre. In addition, the four-cylinder with single-stage turbocharger and variable turbine geometry is distinguished by a high level of refinement. Both the cylinder head and the crankcase are made of aluminium. The Mercedes-Benz-developed NANOSLIDE® surface coating efficiently reduces the friction between cylinder liner and steel piston.

All the models available at market launch are equipped as standard with the 9G‑TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, which allows fast gearshifts along with lower engine speeds. This has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise.

Suspension – sporty comfort

The suspension on the new E-Class Coupé offers agile driving pleasure on winding roads together with exceptional ride comfort. The Coupé comes as standard with DIRECT CONTROL suspension. In the interests of a sporty look, the suspension is 15 millimetres lower than on the Saloon and is tuned for comfort with an amplitude-dependent damping system.

The DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping is optionally available. It, too, is set lower. Using a switch in the centre console for the as-standard DYNAMIC SELECT system, the driver can vary the damping characteristics of this suspension. Three modes are available, offering a wide range of adjustment options: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”.

AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension

Alternatively, the new E-Class Coupé can be equipped with multi-chamber air suspension, including all-round roll/pitch/heave stabilisation. Advantages of this system: three chambers of different size in the spring struts of the rear axle and two in the spring struts of the front axle make it possible to control the hardness of the suspension in three stages. In this way, the occupants enjoy soft basic suspension, along with the secure feeling of good handling stability at higher speeds.

The multi-chamber air suspension is augmented by a continuous, electronically controlled adaptive damping system. The damping at each individual wheel is adjusted fully automatically to suit the current driving situation and condition of the road – such as in the case of evasive manoeuvres or on rough tracks. The system therefore delivers good ride comfort along with excellent driving dynamics.

Using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch, the driver can also select different suspension characteristics in combination with the AIR BODY CONTROL system: “Comfort”, ECO, “Sport”, “Sport +” and Individual.

DYNAMIC SELECT – choose your own driving characteristics

However, the DYNAMIC SELECT system not only makes it possible to select the suspension characteristics in combination with DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL and AIR BODY CONTROL, but it also enables the driver to influence other vehicle settings – such as the throttle response, ECO start/stop function, shift points of the automatic transmission and more. Depending on the equipment level, DYNAMIC SELECT provides the following transmission modes: Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport + and Individual. “Individual” allows the driver to configure their own preferred transmission modes.

Full smartphone integration

A new era of connectivity and digitalisation is marked by the infotainment system in the E-Class Coupé with COMAND Online. This includes effortless integration of the smartphone into the vehicle’s infotainment system by means of capacitive aerial coupling and wireless charging. This means that compatible mobile phones can be charged wirelessly and also connected to the vehicle’s exterior aerial. This dispenses with the need to find a plug and connect a cable. There is an added advantage: using Near Field Communication, the customer’s smartphone becomes the digital vehicle key with which the car can be locked and unlocked as well as started.

A further comfort highlight is the new Concierge Service, which is exclusively available in all E-Class models in combination with Mercedes me connect. For participating customers, the range of services includes a host of personalised assistance options: from making a restaurant reservation to obtaining tips about tourist routes, information on cultural and sporting events and bookings through to sending navigation destinations directly to the vehicle.

Access is straightforward: registered Mercedes me connect users can call up the Concierge Service in 19 countries across Europe either via the iCall button in the vehicle or on the Mercedes me app. The personal assistant takes care of everything else.

E-Class innovations on board

As a member of the current E-Class family, the new Coupé is significantly more intelligent than its predecessor. It comes with all the features of the E-Class, the most intelligent executive saloon. Active Brake Assist comes as standard. It is able to warn the driver of an imminent collision, provide optimum support with emergency braking and, if necessary, also autonomously apply the brakes. In addition to slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it can also detect pedestrians crossing in the danger zone ahead of the vehicle.

Other highlights include DRIVE PILOT: this system represents Mercedes-Benz’s next step along the road to autonomous driving. As Distance Pilot DISTRONIC, it is not only able to keep the car at the correct distance behind vehicles in front on all types of road, but, for the first time, it can also automatically follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h.

Remote Parking Pilot is also new: for the first time, this system allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages and parking spaces remotely using a smartphone app, enabling the occupants to get into and out of the car easily, even where space is very tight.

The E-Class Coupé is also optionally available with other intelligent technical systems, including:

  • high-resolution MULTIBEAM LED headlamps. These headlamps, each with 84 individually activated high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road surface with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users.
  • MAGIC VISION CONTROL – an intelligent and highly efficient wash/wipe system for the windscreen. The wiper blade always delivers washer fluid directly in front of the wiping edge, via the water feed line integrated into the blade – and it does this in both wiping directions. The result is that there is no surge of water when fluid is sprayed, which can impair the driver’s vision, and at the same time the maximum cleaning effect is achieved. The complete MAGIC VISION CONTROL system, including the wiper blades, is heated at low temperatures to prevent snow or ice from sticking in winter.

E-Class Coupé with tradition

As an exclusive and sporty coupé, the latest member of the E‑C lass family can look back on an almost fifty-year history. Its first ancestor was unveiled by Mercedes‑Benz in 1968 (at that time known as the “Stroke Eight” coupé). Further model series followed – for a while also under the name CLK. Each generation combined superb design with agile sportiness and contemporary luxury at a high level.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet Sport Edition

For the Sport Edition of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz is introducing a look that emphasises the dynamism of these two-door models. A sporty tone is set by a front apron with distinctive air inlets, a louvre in the radiator trim in high-gloss black with chrome inserts as well as muscular side sill panels. The drivers of following vehicles are treated to the view of a diffuser-look rear apron, an AMG spoiler lip in the vehicle colour and a two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe tips. The AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension with sporty spring and damper tuning guarantees enhanced driving dynamics and is equipped with exclusive 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, perforated front brake discs and brake callipers with “Mercedes-Benz” lettering. The special models are identified by “Sport Edition” badges on the left and right wings.

In the interior, the driver and front passenger are accommodated in black-leather upholstered multicontour seats – with linarite blue and alpaca grey topstitching also for the door centre panels, armrest and centre console. Appointments in black or natural beige nappa leather are optionally available.

Additional visual highlights are set by cross-grain bright aluminium. To cater for more individualisation, the Sport Edition is optionally available with trim in high-gloss black ash, black piano lacquer or dark textured-grain aluminium.

The sporty nature of these special-edition models is further underscored by a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel covered in nappa leather, silver steering wheel shift paddles and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. Customers choosing the high-gloss black ash trim have the option of combining this with a leather-covered multifunction sports steering wheel in black ash with black wood/leather shift paddles.

The black velour floor mats have a black edge and bear the lettering “Sport Edition”.

To underline the exclusiveness of the Sport Editions of the Coupé and Cabriolet, a special paint finish in brilliant blue metallic is available and is reserved exclusively for these special-edition models.

The Sport Edition can be ordered with any of the engines that are available for the E-Class Coupé and E-Class Cabriolet.

Muscular visual attractions for connoisseurs

The V8 Edition is based on the E 500 Coupé and E 500 Cabriolet each with 300 kW/408 hp. Powered by an eight-cylinder V-engine, even the basic versions of both variants are among the most exceptional vehicles on the road. With the connoisseur in mind, the V8 Edition takes both the Coupé and the Cabriolet to a new level in terms of style and exquisite appointments. Aware of the tastes of the automotive aficionado, the design specialists at Mercedes-Benz have opted for a first-class equipment specification.

The V8 Edition offers a unique package of exclusive highlights. On the exterior, these include titanium grey-painted, high-sheen 19-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels and “V8 Edition” badges on the wings. Special paint finishes in selenite grey metallic and designo diamond white bright emphasise the exclusive-sporty character of the V8 special models.

Driving dynamics are guaranteed by the AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension with selectable mode for the adaptive damping system and specific tuning of the “Sport” mode for the automatic transmission to deliver improved agility and ride comfort.

The centre console and instrument panel are finished in black nappa leather with topstitching in porcelain or classic red; the door centre panels with armrest are in nappa leather in the appointments colour with tone-in-tone topstitching. To create a harmonious overall look, the design specialists have added “V8 Edition” lettering in the appointments colour to the seat belts, the contrasting topstitching and the trim seam of the black-edged velour foot mats.

The V8 Edition includes THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control with three climate zones, fine-particle activated charcoal filter, separate temperature control for driver/front passenger and rear compartment, individual climate modes FOCUS, MEDIUM and DIFFUSE, air-quality sensor with automatic air recirculation, dew point sensor as well as rear temperature control panel.

Smartphone integration

Prior Design E-Class Coupe PD850 Black Edition

Prior Design shows off their E-Class Coupe tuning kit, the Prior Design E-Class Coupe PD850 Black Edition

When you think of tuned Mercedes models, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe likely isn’t the first choice that comes to mind.  We’ve seen one from Brabus, one from Kicherer and others from Prior Design, but aside from those, tuners tend to focus more on other models. Today, however, Prior Design has proved the pre-facelifted E-Class Coupe is still a vehicle worth tuning, releasing their new kit dubbed the Prior Design E-Class Coupe PD850 Black Edition.

Prior Design E-Class Coupe PD850 Black Edition

The kit, made from Dura-Flex fiber reinforced plastic, is compatible with all C207 models.  The PD850 Black Edition kit consists of the following components: a new front bumper, rear bumper with diffuser, side skirts, front fenders, wider rear fenders, a rear trunk spoiler, a front bonnet add-on and everything required to mount the parts.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet – Part III Interior

The 2014 E-Class facelift has not been limited to the exterior, the effects can also be seen on the inside of the Coupe and Cabriolet

The 2014 E-Class facelift has not been limited to the exterior of Mercedes’ second most popular model. The effects of the facelift can also be seen on the interior of the E-Class lineup, reinforcing the cabin’s sporty character on both the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet while at the same time blending it with a sense of luxury and class that only Mercedes-Benz can offer.

The insides of the coupé and cabriolet are dominated by stylish materials alongside clean-cut surfaces and the two-part trim element that stretches across the entire dashboard. This has the effect of enhancing the interior’s feeling of spaciousness and classiness. The trim element is bordered by a silver chrome frame, which goes perfectly with all of the various materials available. These include three fine wood and two aluminium variants, together with black piano lacquer.

Also new are the instrument cluster with dials backed in white, which are designed to emphasise the sporty concept, and the head unit’s trapezoid-shaped colour TFT display with its high-gloss frame. The affinity to the new E‑Class family and the classy, luxurious character are further demonstrated by the analogue clock between the redesigned air outlets, as well as by the controls in matt silver chrome.

2014 E-Class Cabriolet Interior center console

Center console without automatic selector lever

Contributing to the sporty, functional appeal of the interior is the redesigned center console. In conjunction with the automatic transmission, there is no selector lever positioned here alongside the Controller with its new four-button control panel for the infotainment system. Instead, the automatic transmission is operated via the DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel. This frees up space for stowage facilities in the horizontal part of the centre console. The controls are clearly arranged and designed in silver chrome.

Also to be found in the centre console are the controls for operating the optional Dynamic Handling package, extending and retracting the adjustable rear head restraints and the sunblind for the rear window on the Coupé, and for selecting the transmission mode. Under the centre armrest on the Cabriolet there is a special control console, housing the lever for operating the soft top and the control buttons for simultaneous opening and closing of the windows as well as for the optional AIRCAP system.

2014 E-Class Cabriolet Interior

Sporty steering wheel

Available in a heated version as an option, the distinctly sporty three-spoke multifunction steering wheel trimmed in nappa leather with perforated panels, thumbrests and two silver chrome inserts offers supreme ease of operation with its twelve trapezoid-shaped buttons. In conjunction with the AMG Sports package, the three-spoke AMG sports steering wheel with a flattened lower section is fitted. Contrasting red stitching is added on the variant for the AMG Plus Sports package.

The steering column benefits from an extended adjustment range. It can be individually positioned by plus/minus 25 mm for height, as well as 15 mm forwards and 35 mm backwards for reach.

2014 E-Class Coupe Interior

High quality and color highlights

The new surface materials in the interior convey a high perceived quality. They feature a fine grain with a high-class look and feel, which not only adds to the elegant air but is easy to clean, too. As an option, the dashboard can also be finished in a particularly attractive nappa leather trim for a distinctly sporty and luxurious ambience in the cockpit.

In order to maximise the scope for customisation, the AVANTGARDE and ELEGANCE interior concepts have been done away with and a wide choice of new interior and contrasting colours introduced in their place. New colours for the interior include silk beige, espresso brown, Bengal red and deep-sea blue. The newly available colour combination black/espresso brown symbolises “a new type of sportiness”, while the new contrasting colour deep-sea blue combines with the silk beige interior to bring a breath of fresh air into the design. New colour schemes can also be created with the roof liner in a choice of silk beige, alpaca grey and black.

The door linings with their contrasting topstitching are colour-coordinated with the rest of the interior, and are offered in two different materials:

  • ARTICO man-made leather is used in the case of the appointments variants fabric, fabric in combination with ARTICO man-made leather, ARTICO man-made leather and also in conjunction with leather appointments.
  • Nappa leather with vertical quilting is combined with appointments in nappa leather.

Additional design features on the insides of the doors include:

  • generously sized trim element beneath the beltline, which is finished at the top with trim in silver chrome
  • door opener in silver chrome, as well as silver-chrome surround for the electric seat adjustment controls in conjunction with the Memory package
  • armrest with silver-chrome trim, the shape of which underscores the sweeping lines of the armrest
  • door pocket for extra stowage space

2014 E-Class Cabriolet Interior Convertible Seats

Attractive, ergonomic sports seats

The E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet are both fitted with seats that satisfy the most discerning and wide-ranging requirements in terms of seating comfort, ergonomic design, safety and sportiness. This is thanks to features such as the height-adjustable, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints, standard electric adjustment of seat cushion height and backrest angle, as well as the seats’ steel structure and integral springing.

The proven EASY-ENTRY system for the front seats facilitates easy access to the rear. After entering the vehicle, an active belt feeder with additional control button on the dashboard console automatically moves the front seat belts into a position where the driver and front passenger can easily reach them, further helping to make the driving experience as ergonomic and comfortable as possible.

Depending on the selected material, the seats in the new E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet have a varying appearance with contrasting topstitching that is matched to the upholstery colour and material. The seats are upholstered as standard in a fabric/ARTICO man-made leather combination. The nappa leather upholstery includes new, continuous piping in a contrasting colour, while the seat cushion and backrest side bolsters on the leather upholstered seats feature a new, distinctive perforated pattern that brings out their sporting qualities.

Alternatively, there is also the option of the Multicontour Seat package for driver and front passenger. This allows smooth, pneumatic adjustment of seat cushion length, as well as the backrest lumbar support and side bolsters. As a result, the seat can be adjusted to the ideal position for both a sporty and a comfortable ride.

Further comfort-enhancing functions are available with the Memory package for driver and front passenger, which memorises the settings of the fully power-adjustable front seats, front head restraints, steering column and exterior mirrors for each user individually and automatically restores them again. Seat heating is also available, as are climatised front seats with active seat ventilation. There is a choice of three settings for adjusting the intensity of both the seat heating and ventilation.

By no means do passengers in the rear of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet have to compromise on comfort. The two full-size individual seats in the rear are very comfortable to sit in and include integral head restraints – which extend and retract electrically on the Cabriolet and act as a fully functional rollover protection system. When the seats are occupied, the head restraints extend automatically. The individual rear seats in the Coupé have a 1/3 : 2/3 split-folding design. The fold-out centre armrest on the Cabriolet can be specified with an optional through-loading feature.

2014 E-Class Cabriolet Interior

Unrivalled cabriolet comfort

The speed-dependent AIRCAP system is available as an option for exceptional comfort when driving with the top down. This reduces wind turbulence within the vehicle interior and therefore wind noise, too. New: AIRCAP deploys automatically at speeds above 40 km/h, and the wind deflector in the windscreen frame automatically retracts again below 15 km/h. This ensures that the E-Class Cabriolet appears in its purest form when driving slowly and when stationary. The two rear head restraints together with the draught-stop between them respond to the number of vehicle occupants by extending automatically if the rear seat belts are in use.

Also optionally available: AIRSCARF neck-level heating. This addition extends the cabriolet season by ensuring it is comfortable to drive with the top down even when it is cold outside. To this end, a heating element inside the head restraint warms up the air before a ventilator blows it through apertures in the head restraint, so that the heated air envelops the neck like a warm scarf. The driver and front passenger are able to individually adjust the height the air flows out at, and there is also a choice of three intensity settings.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet – Part II Design

As part of the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelift, Mercedes-Benz has further honed the design with clever alterations

As part of the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelift, Mercedes-Benz has further honed the design with clever alterations, giving the two models a brand new face. Mercedes-Benz has consistently implemented its new design idiom while at the same time staying true to the brand’s traditional design values.

The new look of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet is mainly the result of the redesigned front end, with new headlamps comprising all functional elements behind a single headlamp lens. The indicator, position and daytime running lamps sitting atop each pair of headlamp eyes use LED fibre-optic cables that produce a “torch” effect. These striking, curving lighting elements help to reproduce the four-eyed look so typical of the E-Class, and give both Coupé and Cabriolet an unmistakable night design. LED technology is employed for the low beam and daytime running lamps as standard, while customers are also given the option of all-LED headlamps for the first time in this segment.

The front of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet, featuring a sporty, upright radiator grille with central star, clearly spells status, self-assurance and sportiness. Now free of all lighting functions, the restyled bumper with its more pronounced V-shape serves up a fascinating interplay between surfaces of varying curvature with crisp contour lines and soft shapes. It has a sophisticated appearance, while the wing design of its curved spoiler lip clearly underscores the sporty aspirations and dynamism of these agile cars.

All in all, the front end with its sports car grille presents a distinctive, sporty face, but at the same time emphasises the close affinity between the Coupé and Cabriolet and the new E-Class Saloon.

Silhouette with dynamic proportions

The Coupé has classic proportions with a long bonnet, elongated side window design, flat roof line, and muscular tail end. Traditional styling cues that render Mercedes-Benz coupé models so individual and unmistakable give added impact to the two-door model’s striking lines – such as the frameless doors and the‑outline of the fully retractable side windows without any B-pillars to interrupt the flow.

The four-seater Cabriolet model also has fully retractable side windows, with structure lines that continuously ascend gently as they run from the front to the boot lid emphasising its clear proportions. The elongated beltline, which merges into the longer-looking tail end, stretches the Cabriolet’s flanks and means that it cuts an especially dynamic figure when driving with the roof down. When the soft top is closed, it blends harmoniously into the silhouette to stunning effect, thanks to its flat roof edge and slender C-pillars. The classic fabric soft top additionally bestows the vehicle with a sense of exclusive elegance at the same time as evoking memories of the great four-seater Mercedes-Benz cabriolets of the past. Both the Coupé and the Cabriolet retain the muscular-looking rear wings as a visible sign of the sporty cars’ rear-wheel drive and athleticism and a clear declaration of their performance potential.

Broad, distinctive rear end

At the rear, the lights and bumper have been revised. The new, slimmer LED tail lights extending far into the flanks emphasise the vehicle width, and use LED fibre optics to create a distinctive night design that is typical of Mercedes. A third brake light as well as the white-effect number plate lighting also make use of LED technology.

The new broad-looking rear bumper captures the new design idiom and brings it to a powerful, coherent conclusion with a wing attachment with chrome-look trim that appears to be floating. Depending on the specification, the tailpipes are either concealed out of sight or highlighted for the onlooker. The eight-cylinder models as well as models with the optional Exterior Sports package or AMG Sports package have trapezoid-shaped tailpipe trims integrated into the bumper.

E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet owners can also add some individual visual highlights with an attractive range of new wheels. The four- and six-cylinder variants of both model series ride as standard on wheels measuring 43.2 cm (17 inches), while the eight-cylinder models are fitted with 45.7 cm (18-inch) wheels. Further wheel variants can be specified as optional extras.

The models’ sporty, exclusive nature is further underlined by the new special paint finish aragonite silver, which was specially developed for the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet. The soft top colour dark brown has also been introduced with the facelift.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet – Part I

Part I- 2014 Mercedes-Benz Coupe and Cabriolet In-Depth: passionate, sporty, intelligent

Just like they did with the E-Class Sedan and the Wagon, Mercedes-Benz completed a thorough overhaul of the Coupé and Cabriolet in the 2014 E-Class range. Premiering at the Detroit Auto show, the Coupe and Cabriolet were revealed with a sportier wedge-like design that is far more aggressive than on any other E-class. As sporty as the redesignedwo t-door E-Class models are on the outside, the updated interior takes its luxurious design cues from the sedan and wagon, most notably by relocating of the gear selector from the center console to the column

Throughout the day, we’re going to take an in-depth look at the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet, tech specs, interior and exterior details, media reviews and more. Stay tuned and check back often.

Part II: 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet Design

The new E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet – The ultimate in driving enjoyment: passionate, sporty, intelligent

New features on the coupe and cabriolet include powerful and efficient BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines with pioneering injection technology and trailblazing assistance systems as part of the “Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive” concept. Such Intelligent Drive features include, for example, systems which are able to prevent collisions with crossing vehicles or with pedestrians, Active Lane Keeping Assist, as well as dazzle-free continuous high beam.

The classic Coupé and the four-seater Cabriolet from the Mercedes-Benz E‑Class range are amongst the most desirable vehicles in the executive segment. By combining intelligent, efficient technology with luxurious equipment that offers superb comfort, neither model compromises when it comes to indulging a passion for superlative driving enjoyment. That is why they are regarded as emotion-packed highlights in the successful E-Class family. The design of the exterior and interior alike is fresh and sharp, mirroring the many new technical highlights on board in distinctly athletic fashion.

The extra-sporty members of the E-Class family underline their elite status in their respective segment with a number of true standout features. The E-Class Coupé, for instance, is the only model in its class to come with fully retractable side windows and no B-pillar. The E-Class Cabriolet, meanwhile, sets itself apart from the rest of the executive four-seater cabriolet segment with its automatic AIRCAP system that has undergone further improvement and its AIRSCARF neck-level heating. The latter makes it possible to drive with the roof down whatever the temperature is outside, thereby extending the cabriolet season well into the winter months.

Design: the essence of e-motion

The new look of the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet is largely down to the redesigned front end with new headlamps comprising all functional elements behind a single headlamp lens. The headlamps are fitted with LED low beam and LED daytime running lamps as standard, while all-LED technology is available for the first time in this class as an option. Inside the headlamps, flowing LED fibre-optic cables seem to trace the lines of four “eyebrows”, reinforcing the four-eyed look so typical of the E-Class.

High-tech engines: efficiency meets performance

Both the E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet are available with a broad range of powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines – all fitted with ECO start/stop function. New units include the BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines in the E 200 and E 250 Coupé and Cabriolet, which employ the same technology used in the latest six-cylinder units from Mercedes-Benz. Both of the new four-cylinder petrol engines meet the future EU6 emissions standard, while the E 250 even complies with the strict criteria of efficiency class A.

The six-cylinder petrol engines in the E 300, E 350 and E 400 – featuring a biturbo drive for the first time – are also state-of-the-art. The same advanced engine technology enables the V8 in the E 500 Coupé and Cabriolet to achieve outstanding levels of performance and efficiency.

The four-cylinder diesel units featuring the very latest injection technology in the E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI have been made more economical than ever, thanks partly to a re-engineered drivetrain. The V6 diesel engine powering the E 350 BlueTEC has also been overhauled and equipped with clean and efficient second-generation BlueTEC technology, enabling it to already meet the demands of the future EU6 emissions standard today. All diesel-engined Coupé and Cabriolet models have an efficiency class rating of A or A+.

Intelligent assistance systems

In the main markets, both the Coupé and Cabriolet models are fitted as standard with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based proximity and collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist. Also forming part of the standard equipment worldwide is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range, and also to inform the driver about their level of alertness and the amount of driving time which has elapsed since their last break. It also offers adjustable sensitivity levels. In addition to this, the list of optional extras includes numerous assistance systems, which are mostly new or offer significantly enhanced functionality.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Family at the NAIAS

The 2014 E-Class Sedan, Wagon, Cabriolet and Coupe will all be on hand at the 2013 NAIAS this week

Visitors to the North American International Auto Show that that started last week in Detroit were host to the world debut of the 2014 E-Class family that Mercedes-Benz has extensively updated. The Sedan, wagon, cabriolet and coupe showcase new more efficient engines, new advanced assistance systems and a new design idiom.

Many new or optimized assistance systems from the future S-Class celebrate their world premiere in all E-Class models. They blend comfort and safety. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as “Intelligent Drive.” This includes systems capable of preventing accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians for the very first time. Active Lane Keeping Assist can also prevent collisions with oncoming traffic. With these innovations Mercedes-Benz underscores its pioneering role in vehicle safety.

Economical and efficient engines

The 2014 E-Class family also takes a significant step forward with regard to efficiency and the environment. Among the contributing factors are engines with direct-injection and ECO start/stop technology.

A broad range of powerful gasoline and diesel engines with four, six or eight cylinders is available for customers of the E-Class family to choose from. For the gasoline engines the power output ranges from a 190 hp diesel to the highperformance 577 hp gasoline engine.

Intelligent modified design

The exterior design reflects the significant technological advances. Intelligent modifications give the 2014 E-Class a new front-end design and revised proportions. The front end has been completely restyled with new headlights that incorporate all light functions within a single lens. In addition, the E-Class Sedan and Wagon are available for the first time with two different front-end designs – with the classic three-dimensional sedan grille and star on the hood or with the sports car grille.

A new feature line and a repositioned three-dimensional trim line bring energetic new proportions to both the sedan and wagon. The feature line runs below the structure line from the rear door to the tail light, giving the car greater visual length. The overall effect is to make the E-Class look longer and more elegant, and at the same time dynamic.

The classic coupe and the four-seat cabriolet are designed to take passionate driving pleasure to exclusive new heights, serving as the emotional highlights of the successful E-Class family. Both retain their powerfully sculpted rear fenders that visually emphasize the fact that these sporty vehicles have rearwheel drive. New tail lights and a wing-design rear bumper with chrome trim elements emphasizes width and further accent the athletic appearance of coupe and cabriolet.

In all visual modifications of the E-Class family the designers applied the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom to reinterpret the brand’s classic design values on the existing foundation. The result: With its new design the E-Class captures the very essence of efficiency, intelligence and emotion.

Premium interior

Mercedes-Benz has also revised the interior of the 2014 E-Class to harmonize with the expressive exterior. The interior is dominated by exquisite materials, a new two-part trim extending across the entire dashboard, a new center console, a large color display as well as redesigned ergonomic seats and fresh interior colors. Overall the E-Class offers a significantly higher level of comfort. As a result it further solidifies its top position in the luxury segment.

Mercedes-AMG builds the most powerful E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4MATIC in the E-Class family sets new standards for performance and dynamic purpose. It is now also available as an especially powerful S-Model with a rated power output of 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque that is transferred to all four wheels by a newly developed, performanceoriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Permanent all-wheel drive is now standard on all U.S. market E63 AMG 4MATIC models – with power output of the standard model’s AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine jumping from 518 hp to 550 hp with a peak torque of 531 lb-ft.

The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC also sports a more dynamic outfit than before: Even at first glance the new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent. A new “twin blade” radiator grille and a new “A-wing” in the AMG front fascia define the exclusive appearance. As before, the top-of-the-line E-Class AMG model is available as a sedan and wagon.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan & Wagon

Stylish, Efficient, Intelligent

DETROIT – Mercedes-Benz introduces the extensively updated 2014 E-Class Sedan and Wagon, featuring highly efficient engines, an array of new driver assistance systems and even more refined styling. No less than eleven new or optimized assistance systems from the future S-Class celebrate their world premiere in both the sedan and wagon models. They combine a host of comfort and safety features, referred to by Mercedes-Benz as “Intelligent Drive.” These groundbreaking systems include technologies that can help prevent accidents with pedestrians or vehicles crossing in front, Active Lane Keeping Assist for avoiding collisions with oncoming traffic and anti-glare continuous high-beam headlamps. All this and more ensures that Mercedes- Benz maintains its pioneering role in vehicle safety. The new E-Class also takes a major step forward in terms of efficiency, thanks to the new fourcylinder diesel engine. An extensive package of design updates round-off the new and compelling features of the MY14 E-Class, delivering an accomplished combination of efficiency, intelligence and style. The 2014 EClass Sedan and Wagon will be in U.S. showrooms this Spring.

By conducting such a comprehensive redevelopment of the E-Class range, Mercedes-Benz is ensuring that its customers benefit from the very latest technical advances as soon as possible. The new E-Class also comes with distinctive updates in its styling for an elegant and sporty look, as well as significantly enhanced comfort features and upscale equipment, rounded-off by an exceptional level of efficiency and everyday driving pleasure. All of this comes together to ensure that the E-Class continues to consolidate its leading position in the luxury segment.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes- Benz Cars: “We are setting clear trends in terms of safety, design and efficiency with the new E-Class. It puts many technical innovations on the road and undoubtedly is the best E-Class ever. This also finds expression in its design and its carefully revised interior, which bring a breath of fresh air to the luxury class. The ‘E’ thus continues to hold its place at the very top of this demanding segment.”

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan

Design – a choice of two new front-end styles

Numerous intelligent modifications have given the E-Class a new front-end design and revised proportions. Designers applied the new Mercedes-Benz design language to reinterpret the brand’s classic design values on the existing basis. The outcome is an elegant, refined and yet sporty look.

The front end has been completely revised with new headlamps that incorporate all light functions within a single lens, while flowing light elements within the headlamps help to retain the “four-eyed” appearance that is such a distinctive EClass signature. When it comes to light and sight, the E-Class sets the benchmark – low beam and daytime running lights both come with partial LED as standard, while full-LED headlamps are available as an option for the first time in this class.

In another first, the MY14 E-Class is available with two different front-end designs. The Luxury version comes with the classic sedan grille with 3-louver look and star on the hood. The Sport version, on the other hand, features the sports grille with integrated star, forming a visual link to the brand’s highperformance sports car models.

The hood and front bumper have also been completely redesigned. With its flowing lines, the hood offers a smooth, sleek expression of the new design language. The bumper has new, contemporary styling with an aerofoil shape along its lower edge for an even more distinctively sporting character. Sport models receive an even more confident front design, using the AMG styling package that features larger air intakes and a distinct aluminum trim line along the entire lower rim of the front bumper.

Dynamic, elegant proportions

A new feature line and a repositioned three-dimensional trim line bring new proportions to both the sedan and wagon. The feature line runs below the structure line from the rear door to the tail light, giving the car greater visual length. This is reinforced by the side trim, which is now much lower. The overall effect is to make the MY14 E-Class look longer and more elegant, and at the same time both dynamic and composed.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon

Broad, distinctive rear end

The rear end of the MY14 E-Class features modifications to the lights and the bumper. The new LED tail lamps have a horizontal design that emphasizes the width of the vehicle, while the two-tone look comes with a distinctive nighttime signature. Sport models feature exposed dual exhaust pipes.

Premium interior

The generously proportioned interior of the E-Class has been subtly revised and harmonized with the expressive exterior. Premium materials, precise lines and clearly defined surfaces combine to create a sophisticated overall look-and-feel.

A new feature is the two-part trim extending across the entire soft-touch dashboard, which is available in two wood finishes – burl walnut or black ash. Also new are the instrument cluster, the trapezoidal head-unit display, the air vent design and the analogue clock between the two central vents.

“Intelligent Drive” with new assistance systems

What started with PRE-SAFE® and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS® has emerged as a new dimension of driving at Mercedes-Benz, where comfort and safety merge into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this “Intelligent Drive.” A whole host of new or optimized systems from the future S-Class celebrate their world premiere in the E-Class, delivering increased comfort and safety, such as the all-new DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist.

The basis for all this is new state-of-the-art sensors and their associated algorithms. Mercedes-Benz has taken a major step forward with the introduction of the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera. Just like the previous Mono Multi-Purpose Camera, it is located on the windshield near the rearview mirror. However, this camera features two “eyes,” set at an angle of 45 degrees to produce a threedimensional view of the area up to 55 yards in front of the vehicle and with an overall range of up to 550 yards. The stereo camera gathers data for processing by various systems using intelligent algorithms. The systems can detect vehicles driving in front, oncoming or crossing and evaluate this three-dimensional visual information to determine their speed and position. They can also identify pedestrians within a large field of vision.

Along with the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera, Mercedes-Benz is also introducing enhanced versions of the Multi-Mode Radar sensor system. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with Adaptive Brake Assist is standard equipment on both the sedan and wagon. It helps to reduce significantly the risk of a rear-end collision. Also part of standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST®, which now warns of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider range, and provides visual information on attention level and time driven since the last break. The sensitivity of the new-generation ATTENTION ASSIST® can be adjusted by the driver.

Also available are a number of assistance systems that are either new or now feature significantly enhanced functionality. In overview:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS® with Steering Assist can help the driver keep the vehicle centered in its lane and can semi-autonomously follow in-line traffic.
  • For the first time, the Brake Assist system BAS PLUS® with Cross-Traffic Assist is able to detect crossing traffic and pedestrians, and boost the braking power applied by the driver accordingly
  • The PRE-SAFE® Brake can now detect pedestrians as well and initiate autonomous braking.
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS can identify an imminent rear-end collision and then prompt the PRE-SAFE® system to trigger occupant protection measures that reduce the forces exerted on passengers. If the vehicle is stationary, it can also prevent secondary accidents in the event of a rear-end collision by applying the brakes.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist can now detect when the adjacent lane is not clear, including the presence of oncoming traffic, overtaking vehicles, crash barriers etc. Under threat of a collision, even if the lane marking is not a solid line, the system can prevent the vehicle from leaving its lane unintentionally by applying the brakes on one side. This system pairs perfectly with Active Blind Spot Assist.
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS allows high beam to remain permanently switched on without dazzling traffic by masking out other vehicles in the beams’ cone of light.
  • Active Parking Assist enables automated parking with active steering and brake control in both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
  • The Surround View Camera will cover all four sides of the vehicle and enable a 360-degree view including virtual bird’s-eye perspective – a top view of the vehicle and its immediate surroundings. Dynamic guide lines help during parking and maneuvering.

Excellent performance with high gas mileage

Both the E-Class sedan and wagon boast a range of powerful and efficient gasoline and diesel engines. All come with the ECO start/stop system as standard equipment and are highly efficient. Mercedes-Benz offers the broadest range of ECO start/stop systems in the United States, as well as the most seamless, smooth, and unobtrusive algorithms.

The gasoline engines offered in the MY14 E-Class are the highly successful V6 and V8 units in the E350 and E550, which will go on sale in Spring 2013. They combine excellent response characteristics and outstanding power delivery with exceptional efficiency.

Powerful diesel engine and hybrid drive for outstanding efficiency

New in the MY14 E-Class sedan is the incredibly efficient four-cylinder diesel engine powering the E250 BlueTEC with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, available Fall 2013. Compliant with emissions legislations in all fifty states, the latest diesel model from Mercedes-Benz shows that premium elegance and outstanding economy are not mutually exclusive. The E250 BlueTEC generates 190 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, replacing the V6-powered E350 BlueTEC engine that only was available with rear-wheel drive.

A further feature of the MY14 E-Class range is the highly economical E400 HYBRID. Supplemented by an electric motor (27hp, 184 lb-ft), the E400 HYBRID offers the powerful and refined performance of the Mercedes-Benz 3.5-liter V6 (302hp, 273 lb-ft) paired with an outstanding gas mileage of 24/30 mpg (est. city/highway)

New-generation transmission for dynamic and economical driving

The engines in the MY14 E-Class are mated to the seven-speed automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever and DIRECT SELECT shift paddles. This latest evolution of the seven-speed transmission offers significant benefits in terms of efficiency and ease of maintenance.

A new feature is the short-term M mode. If the driver shifts up or down manually, the transmission independently switches back to the fuel-efficient automatic shift mode after a pre-determined period of time elapses.

Traction and stability can also be enhanced across the MY14 E-Class lineup with the 4MATIC® permanent all-wheel-drive system – particularly effective in challenging surface conditions.

The E63 AMG sedan and wagon, launching in summer 2013, comes with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT seven-speed MCT and 4MATIC in the United States, delivering incredible performance.

Refined suspension for excellent handling

Mercedes-Benz offers three suspension configurations for the MY14 E-Class:

  • Configured for comfort, the AGILITY CONTROL suspension with strokedependent damping system is the standard suspension setup for the Luxury model
  • In the Sport model, the AGILITY CONTROL suspension with strokedependent damping system is 15 mm lower and has a more sporty setup
  • The E63 AMG 4MATIC comes with the AMG Adaptive Sport Suspension.

All suspension variants feature outstanding sensitivity and ride characteristics and help to ensure an excellent level of road holding.

All models in the MY14 E-Class lineup are fitted with an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard. This combines speed-sensitive power steering with a variable ratio across the steering angle range. The rack-and-pinion steering gear is controlled on-demand and therefore contributes towards efficiency.

Advantages of the electromechanical Direct-Steer system include:

  • improved agility thanks to more direct steering response
  • comfortable handling and smooth steering characteristics at all speeds
  • improved efficiency, as energy is consumed only while steering
  • enables innovative assistance systems, e.g. Active Parking Assist

Premium equipment

The MY14 E-Class already comes with a comprehensive range of premium equipment as standard. Optional packages include the Premium 1 package with Rearview camera, COMAND navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, harman/kardon® Logic 7® surround sound, power rear window sunshade, heated front seats (standard with E550), active ventilated front seats and garage-door opener. Further packages available at launch are the Lighting package, Parking Assist package, Lane Tracking package, Wood Trim package and Wheel package. The Driver Assistance package and KEYLESS-GO package will be available shortly after launch.

The KEYLESS-GO package will feature electronic trunk closer and HANDS-FREE ACCESS, which enables opening and closing of the trunk lid without physical contact by simply holding your foot beneath the bumper. This extremely convenient feature is particularly useful when loading and unloading the vehicle.

When it comes to infotainment, Mercedes-Benz delivers the MY14 E-Class sedan and wagon with the COMAND® system featuring AM/FM/WB radio, in-dash DVD/CD player, in-dash memory card slot, and Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling. Standard equipment also includes a central controller with a 7-inch, highresolution display and a color display in the instrument cluster.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet

Driving pleasure at the highest level: Passionate, sporty, intelligent

DETROIT – Mercedes-Benz has restyled the Coupe and Cabriolet members of the E-Class family for the 2014 model year. The bold new styling is combined with sophisticated new assistance systems which are part of Mercedes-Benz “Intelligent Drive.” These new systems include technology that can help prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians as well as an enhanced version of Active Lane Keeping Assist. Visually, Coupe and Cabriolet have been brought in line with the new Mercedes- Benz design idiom. These models also feature exclusive, luxurious appointments for refined driving, which are hallmarks of the entire EClass family. The 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet go on sale in the U.S. in Summer 2013.

The classic Coupe and the four-seat Cabriolet versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class are among the most coveted vehicles in the premium medium-size segment. With intelligent and efficient technology as well as luxurious and comfortable appointments, both are uncompromisingly designed for passionate driving enjoyment. They are therefore regarded as emotionally appealing highlights of the successful E-Class family. Both on the outside and inside the design is fresh, sharpened and so ideally reflects the many new technical features.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes- Benz Cars: “Three words suffice to very briefly characterize the Coupe and the four-seater Cabriolet: stunning, athletic, passionate. Especially gratifying is that both cars also offer the most intelligent engineering that currently can be had. This makes both of them genuine dream cars.”

Design: E-motional appeal in top form

The new look of the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet is accentuated by the redesigned front end with new headlamps which contain all functional elements within a single lens. The headlamps are fitted with partial LED lights as standard, while full LED technology is available as an option for the first time in this segment. Flowing light elements within the headlamps ensure that the “four-eye” look typical of the E-Class is retained.

The new, more V-shaped front bumpers with large air intakes clearly accentuate the athletic character. The bold front end puts a distinctive, sporty face forward, but at the same time emphasizes the close relationship of the Coupe and Cabriolet with the redesigned E-Class Sedan.

The rear fenders, whose powerfully muscular shape has been retained, lend visual emphasis to the rear-wheel drive of the sporty cars. New tail lights and a wide rear bumper with a chrome trim element additionally underscore the aggressive appearance of these models.

The proportions, with a long hood, extended side line, flat roof and powerful rear end, are those of a classic coupe. Traditional styling features that make the Mercedes-Benz Coupes unmistakable – for instance the layout of the fully retractable side windows, which is unbroken by B-pillars – lend emphasis to the distinctive lines of the two-door car.

Fully retractable side windows are characteristic also of the four-seater Cabriolet and give emphasis to the clear proportions with a gently rising shoulder line from the front to the trunk lid.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Elegant interior

Mercedes-Benz also has restyled the interior of the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet and tastefully matched it to the expressive exterior. Fine materials, two-piece trim stretching across the entire dashboard, and clean surfaces dominate in the interior.

All models in the entire 2014 E-Class family feature an analog clock between the redesigned air vents and console switches are now finished in chrome.

The interior is further characterized by a redesigned center console without a gear selector lever as well as a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with DIRECT SELECT shift lever and shift paddles. This makes room for additional storage space and larger cup holders.

A special highlight of the new E-Class Cabriolet is its acoustic soft top with high-grade insulation, giving it the lowest noise level in its class. The unique acoustic cabriolet soft top ensures that little wind noise penetrates the interior even at high speeds.

With the top down, the standard AIRCAP, which reduces interior turbulence and wind noise, ensures exceptional convertible driving comfort, especially in the rear seat. Now at speeds over 25 mph the AIRCAP system deploys automatically, and at speeds less than 10 mph the wind deflector in the windshield frame is automatically retracted again to present the E-Class Cabriolet in its purest and most beautiful form during slow driving and at a stop. The wind deflector between the rear head restraints responds to the number of occupants, which it automatically recognizes by the buckled rear seat belts, and adjusts the position of the extendible wind deflector in the front and rear accordingly.

The available AIRSCARF neck-level heating extends the convertible season by making comfortable top-down driving possible even at low exterior temperatures.

Limitless individual appointments

E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet offer virtually unlimited possibilities for individual configuration. New interior colors and color combinations, such as blue with contrasting beige boldly brings a breath of fresh air to the exclusive ambience of the two E-Class athletes.

“Intelligent Drive” with new assistance systems from the future

As in the Sedan and Wagon, new assistance systems that combine comfort and safety also are being introduced in the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. Mercedes-Benz refers to all this as “Intelligent Drive.”

The basis for this is formed by state-of-the-art sensors – for instance a Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera in the vicinity of the rearview mirror that produces a three-dimensional view of the area up to 165 feet in front of the vehicle, and is able to monitor the overall situation ahead up to a range of 1,640 feet. Part of the Driver Assistance Package, intelligent algorithms combine the data of the stereo camera with that of the installed radar sensors. They perform an evaluation of this three-dimensional visual information in order to detect vehicles that are driving ahead, oncoming or crossing, as well as pedestrians and road markings within a large field of vision, and to carry out a spatial classification of moving objects.

The 2014 Coupe and Cabriolet are fitted with standard COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist systems, which helps to significantly reduce the risk of a collision. Also part of the standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range, and also inform the driver about his level of fatigue and the amount of driving time which has elapsed since the last break. It also offers an adjustable sensitivity level.

Optionally available on all 2014 E-Class Models are a number of assistance systems which are either new or now feature enhanced functions. The following is an overview of the innovations:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS® with Steering Assist can help the driver keep the vehicle centered in its lane and can semi-autonomously track lines of traffic.
  • For the first time, the Brake Assist system BAS PLUS® with Intersection Assist is able to detect crossing traffic and pedestrians too, and boost the braking power applied by the driver accordingly.
  • The PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect pedestrians and initiate autonomous braking to avoid a collision at speeds up to 30 mph
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognize an imminent rear-end collision, then prompts the PRE-SAFE® system to trigger occupant protection measures to reduce the forces to which occupants are subjected. It can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes in the event of a rear-end collision to prevent secondary accidents.
  • The Active Lane Keeping Assist now can detect when the adjacent lane is not clear, including when it is occupied by oncoming traffic. If a collision threatens, even if the lane marking is not a solid line the system can prevent the vehicle from leaving its lane unintentionally by applying the brakes on one side. It thus optimally supplements the Active Blind Spot Assist.
  • Active Parking Assist enables automated parking with active steering and brake control in both parallel and perpendicular spaces.
  • The 360-degree camera covers all four sides of the vehicle and enables a seamless all-around view including a virtual bird’s-eye perspective – with a top view of the vehicle and its direct surroundings. Dynamic guide lines are a help when entering and leaving parking spaces and maneuvering.

Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “The new E-Class makes a big step forward in every respect. With an emotionally appealing design it provides for fresh highlights in its segment. And in technical respect it offers unique things. They include new assistance systems from the future S-Class which, for example, relieve driver stress with steering assist, DISTRONIC PLUS® and for the first time also can prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians. In addition, the E-Class achieves best ratings in the area of efficiency, offers an internet-capable cloud-based infotainment system and improves night-time driving safety with state-of-the-art LED headlamps. So the E-Class is a veritable high-tech package – a very attractively packaged one at that.”

Drive system: high-performing and a model of efficiency

All the available engines for the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet now feature an ECO start/stop system and are highly efficient. The E350 features a directinjection V6 gasoline engine with 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The E550 is powered by a twin-turbo direct-injection V8 producing 402 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

The E350 Coupe is also available in the U.S. with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. The electronically-controlled system displays an impressive level of traction on all manner of terrain, raises active safety and offers an outstanding degree of driveline refinement.

Mercedes-Benz offers a 7-speed automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles. This latest version of this transmission provides significant advantages in terms of efficiency and ease of maintenance. A new feature is the short-term ‘M’ mode. If the driver has shifted up or down manually, after a set period of time the transmission independently switches back to the fuel-efficient automatic shift mode.

The suspension – the basis for superior handling

The 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet feature the AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system. Its shock absorbers adapt to the condition of the road surface and ensure sporty handling and long-distance comfort typical of Mercedes-Benz.

Alternatively available are the AGILITY CONTROL sports suspension with selective damping system and more tautly tuned dampers as well as the ADVANCED AGILITY package, which offers electronic damping control along with a program for selecting sportier accelerator characteristics and transmission shift points. With this, at the push of a button the driver can adjust the damping to his requirements depending on whether he wants to drive in a comfortable or sporty style.

Like the Sedan and Wagon, the Coupe and Cabriolet are equipped with an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard. It combines the speeddependent power assistance of speed-sensitive steering with a variable ratio across the steering angle range. The electromechanical Direct-Steer system ensures more direct steering response, comfortable handling, and high levels of steering comfort across all speed ranges. It also provides considerable savings potential, since energy is only required during steering action, and makes innovative assistance systems such as Active Parking Assist possible.

High-quality appointments

The 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet feature a comprehensive selection of premium equipment as standard. It includes a modern range of infotainment systems that allow the driver to keep up to date on what is happening around the world, or in the office, while on the road.

Standard equipment includes the COMAND system featuring a 7-inch highresolution color display, sound system w/ AM/FM/WB radio, in-dash DVD/CD player, in-dash memory card slot, auxiliary input jack and Bluetooth interface for hands-free calling.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz offers the mbrace2 system as standard equipment. mbrace2 provides drivers top-of-the-line features related to safety, infotainment, personal assistance and vehicle care. mbrace2 creates a truly networked vehicle offering open Internet access and custom versions of popular apps, including Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search designed specifically for in-vehicle use – called Mercedes-Benz Apps. It also includes a solution to remotely update software via cloud networks ensuring that mbrace2 users always have the latest app versions in their vehicles and at their fingertips. Sensible user design and limited functionality of these Internetbased apps ensures that they provide maximum utility without unnecessary distraction when the vehicle is in motion; certain features are not available for use when the vehicle is in motion.

New benchmark for performance, dynamic purpose and efficiency

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E63 AMG

The new E63 AMG 4MATIC and S-Model

DETROIT – Mercedes-AMG continues to emphasize performance, dynamic purpose and efficiency: The new 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC now features a redesigned, performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system as standard equipment and is also available as an especially powerful SModel with output of 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The 5.5-liter AMG V8 Biturbo continues to be the benchmark of efficiency: No other competitor in this segment offers this combination of maximum performance and low fuel consumption. Permanent all-wheel drive is standard on all U.S. models – which also feature a power increase from 518 hp to 550 hp with a peak torque of 531 lb-ft. With this step Mercedes-AMG now for the first time offers powerful passenger cars with an all-wheel-drive system designed for vehicle dynamics. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC goes on-sale in the U.S. this summer.

With the introduction of the new custom-tailored models, Mercedes-AMG offers its customers even more individuality than before. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC is more powerful and sports a more dynamic outfit than all its predecessors: Even at first glance the new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent. The new “twin blade” radiator grille and a new “A-wing” in the AMG front fascia define the exclusive appearance. As before, the top-of-the-line E-Class AMG model is available as a sedan and wagon. Also adding significantly to the new models’ appeal is the marked improvement in the price-performance ratio: E63 AMG 4MATIC customers now get even more power, better vehicle dynamics and a more extensive list of standard equipment.

The new product logic also benefits the CLS63 AMG: Like the E63 AMG 4MATIC, the CLS63 AMG is available as an S-Model and with the performanceoriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC as standard. The addition of the E63 AMG and the CLS63 AMG means there are now also two all-wheel-drive passenger car models available from Mercedes-AMG besides the successful ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG, and G63 AMG SUV’s. Additional models equippedwith the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC such as Page 23 the CLA45 AMG will follow this year.

Ola Källenius, CEO Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The philosophy of Mercedes-AMG is driving performance. With the new model variants of the E63 AMG 4MATIC and CLS63 AMG 4MATIC it is also becoming clear that we offer our customers even more individuality than before. In particular the S-Models represent the most attractive offer in the competitive segment and score decisive points with a significant improvement in their price-performance ratio: The most power and the highest torque in the segment, the new performance-oriented AMG all-wheel- drive system, the new design and a significantly more extensive standard-equipment package are among the outstanding strengths of the new high-performance automobiles from Affalterbach. With the innovative all-wheel- drive S-Models we will reach new customers and markets.”

Tobias Moers, head of overall vehicle development and member of the management board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “We have significantly honed the dynamic profile of the 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC and the CLS63 AMG 4MATIC with the exclusive S-Models. Only AMG offers customers power and torque figures of such magnitude. Our AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine is still the world’s most efficient V8 built in series production. With the newly developed performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC we not only deliver the best acceleration figures in the competitive segment, we also offer our customers markedly better vehicle dynamics than ever before.”

The models for the U.S. market at a glance (all figures preliminary):

* electronically limited;

With an acceleration time of 3.5 seconds for the sprint from rest to 60 mph, the S-Model of the E63 AMG 4MATIC holds an undisputed top position in the competitive environment; the electronically limited top speed is 186 mph. In addition to the power increase, the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC with a power distribution of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle) is also a major factor. Perfect traction during acceleration effectively prevents any losses due to wheel slip.

On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine produces a peak power output of 577 hp and delivers a peak torque of 590 lb-ft – an increase by 27 hp over the previously available AMG Performance package option. The increase in performance and power is made possible by modifications to the engine management system, an increase in the peak injection pressure and a hike in maximum boost pressure from 13.0 to 14.5 psi. The base model also adds 32 hp and 15 lb-ft and now produces 550 hp of power and a peak torque of 531 lb-ft.

Despite the added power and improved performance all E63 AMG 4MATIC Page 25 models deliver high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low emissions. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine is still the most efficient series-production V8 engine in its performance segment – and that with significantly more displacement than the direct competitors.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E63 AMG S Wagon

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission for a personal setup

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. Four drive programs, “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), provide each driver with a personal setup. In “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfortable and early gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear.

In the “S”, “S+” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Perfectly tailored to a spirited driving style is the partial suppression of the cylinders. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster gearshifts and a more aggressive exhaust note. An automatic rev-matching function for downshifts and the RACE START function are also part of the standard features of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC for maximum dynamics

The performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system sends 33 percent of the engine torque to the front and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased torque split ensures the high level of vehicle dynamics typical of AMG and maximum driving pleasure. The three-stage ESP® system is specifically calibrated to the permanent all-wheel-drive system. In “Sport Handling” mode the Torque Vectoring Brake applies the brakes to selected wheels in the interest of supreme agility: As a result, unwelcome understeer is prevented.

During cornering a targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel affects a defined turn-in of the vehicle.

The standard AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC improves road safety and traction on wet or wintery roads. Optimal traction is ensured by a multi-plate clutch with a locking force of 37 lb-ft, which increases road adhesion particularly on ice and snow.

The technical basis is a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. It is integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with minimum additional space requirements. The torque is transferred by the power take-off to the front axle via a drive shaft. The power from the front differential is transferred to the left half shaft by an intermediate shaft that runs in a sealed shaft tunnel in the engine oil pan. This compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low added weight of just 154 lbs for the all-wheel-drive components.

E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC with limited-slip rear differential

Mercedes-AMG goes even one step further on the E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC. In keeping with its philosophy of “Driving Performance” the most powerful E-Class is equipped with a limited-slip rear differential. This high-tech package increases traction even further. The effect: Even better vehicle dynamics and more driving pleasure, in particular on the racetrack.

All 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC models are equipped with the AMG Adaptive sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. The front axle features a steel suspension, the rear axle an all-air suspension system. A push of the button with the shock absorber symbol in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is all it takes to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport plus.” In conjunction with newly developed aluminum axle components this results in significantly more grip and agility while maintaining the vehicle’s neutral handling during fast cornering. The S-Model’s elastokinematics were perfectly tuned for performance and offer the driver optimal neutral handling at the limit as well as better feedback and grip. The E63 AMG 4MATIC’s track on the front axle is 1.9 inches wider than the standard E-Class sedan and offers significantly better stability at high cornering speeds and better road feel. A more negative camber on both axles additionally improves lateral dynamics.

The perfect complement is the electromechanical AMG sports speed-sensitive steering. In conjunction with the variable power assist dependent on the selected suspension mode, the direct steering ratio of 14 : 1 provides particularly agile cornering capabilities. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC features high-sheen 10-spoke AMG alloys painted titanium gray as standard. The front axle features tires in size 255/35 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear) on AMG alloys in size 9.0 x 19 and 9.5 x 19. Only the powerful S-Model comes with 10- spoke alloys painted in matte titanium gray with high-sheen rim flanges.

AMG carbon ceramic high-performance braking system available as an option

As of course with all AMG cars, the 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC also comes with an ultra-powerful AMG high-performance brake system. Vented and cross-drilled brake discs with a generous 14.2 in diameter are fitted front and rear. Because of the special stresses they face, the front discs feature compound (two-piece) technology that has been tried and tested in motor racing. Brake calipers painted silver with white AMG lettering and six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide responsive, fade-resistant deceleration and shortest stopping distances. The S-Model can be additionally identified by red brake calipers.

AMG carbon ceramic high-performance brakes are available as an option exclusively on the S-Model – recognizable thanks to even bigger brake discs with a diameter of 15.8 in and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on the specially painted brake calipers. Their advantages: The discs are 40 percent lighter, reducing the unsprung masses and improving vehicle dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The ceramic discs are also much harder, resulting in an extended service life and in increased resistance to extreme loads and heat.

Unmistakable design with even more dynamic purpose and exclusivity

Dynamic purpose and performance are not only the focus of the fascinating technology of the new E63 AMG 4MATIC; the design also consistently transports these defining characteristics. Visually the AMG high-performance automobile sets new trends as the first AMG model to show off the new AMG design philosophy. Dominating elements are the silver-chrome AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the so-called “A-wing.” The new three-dimensional air control element extends across the entire width of the AMG front fascia and sports the stylized “A” distinctive of AMG vehicles. The “A-wing” painted in body color with silver-chrome trim strip frames the three generously dimensioned cooling-air inlets. Black flics on the side air inlets ensure optimal airflow to the cooling modules; on the bottom a front splitter painted in body color contributes to increasing downforce. Convex and concave surfaces join the new, sculptured front end of the E63 AMG 4MATIC to the distinctive widened fenders, on which the “V8 BITURBO” lettering provides an indication of the superior engine power.

The side air outlets, the black mesh and the two chrome-plated dual tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emphasize the width of the vehicle in the rear. The black diffuser insert with pronounced fins lends the rear of the E63 AMG 4MATIC a strong touch of racetrack ambiance.

S-Model with even more striking design features

The 2014 E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC differs from the base model in numerous restyled and even more striking design features. The “A-wing” in the front has a black high-gloss finish; the front splitter and the striking three-dimensional inserts of the side skirts sport a silver-chrome design. The silver-chrome trim strip and the two unmistakable dual tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system provide a powerful effect in the rear. The AMG separation edge painted in body color (sedan only) reduces lift at high speeds.

The 10-spoke AMG alloys, painted matte titanium gray and featuring highsheen rim flanges, and the large tires in sizes 255/35 R 19 in front and 285/30 R 19 in the rear fill out the wheel wells perfectly. Red brake calipers and an AMG logo with contrasting black “S” on the trunk lid are further features of the S-Models.

Interior with dynamic-exclusive interior

The interior of the E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC comes with – depending on customer preferences – gray contrasting seams on the AMG sports seats, the door center panels, the armrests of the doors and the center console. The interior also features silver-colored seat belts in conjunction with a black interior. The grip areas of the black Nappa leather steering wheel rim with flattened top and bottom is finished in Alcantara® with gray contrasting seams. The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats are embossed with AMG crests. The redesigned AMG instrument cluster carries an “S AMG” logo on the 200 mph speedometer with red needles. The standard equipment also includes AMG door sill panels backlit in white, power rear roller blinds (sedan only) in addition to many other details.

Distinctive to all E63 AMG 4MATIC models are highest quality materials, excellent workmanship and the exclusive ambiance. The new AMG-specific analog clock in IWC design between the two central ventilation outlets serves as an appealing focal point.

Highlights of standard equipment on all E63 AMG 4MATIC models also include:

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround-sound system

A particular highlight in the selection of optional equipment for the E-Class Sedan and Wagon is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surroundsound system. Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG have created this high-end sound system together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system is of course capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 playback and provides an exclusive music experience with unparalleled sound. The basis for this is not only the 1,200 watt amplifier and the 14 high-end speakers with neodymium drivers, but also the distribution of the music signals that is precisely controlled by the sound processor. This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) provides drivers with the option of selecting a special B&O sound menu on the COMAND system. In True Image™ mode individual sound settings for the front, center and rear can be selected. The effect: A realistic sound experience at the selected listening position. The “Sound Mode” menu also has various preset sound modes that allow choosing between a high-end “Reference” studio sound and a spacious surround sound. While “Reference” puts the focus on the sound presentation of the artist, the special surround sound mode delivers a spacious surround-sound experience. In particular live recordings or concertos result in a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without altering the naturalness of the recording.

50-watt illuminated tweeters with acoustic lens technology arranged in the mirror triangle add special highlights. High-end Bang & Olufsen aluminum speaker covers in silver chrome with Bang & Olufsen logo additionally signal the exceptional position of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround-sound system.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Officially Revealed

The Mercedes E-Class Coupe & Cabriolet are among the most coveted vehicles in the premium medium-size segment

Adding to the 2014 E-Class family, Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed their restyled the Coupe and Cabriolet. If you are short on time, skip directly below to the full photo gallery below showing both the interior and exterior of the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet.

The updated styling of the coupe and cabriolet is paired perfectly with Mercedes-Benz “intelligent drive” assistance systems. These new systems include technology that can help prevent accidents with crossing vehicles or pedestrians as well as an enhanced version of Active Lane Keeping Assist. Visually, Coupe and Cabriolet have been brought in line with the new Mercedes-Benz design idiom. These models also feature exclusive, luxurious appointments for refined driving, which are hallmarks of the entire E-Class family.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Interior

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Interior

It can also firmly apply the stationary vehicle’s brakes in the event of a rearend collision to prevent secondary accidents.
  • Active Parking Assist enables automated parking with active steering and brake control in both parallel and perpendicular spaces

In addition, the EClass achieves best ratings in the area of efficiency, offers an internet-capable cloud-based infotainment system and improves night-time driving safety with state-of-the-art LED headlamps. So the E-Class is a veritable high-tech package – a very attractively packaged one at that.”

Drive system: high-performing and a model of efficiency

All the available engines for the 2014 E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet now feature an ECO start/stop system and are highly efficient. The E350 features a directinjection V6 gasoline engine with 302 hp and 273 lb ft of torque.

It also provides considerable Page 7 savings potential, since energy is only required during steering action, and makes innovative assistance systems such as Active Parking Assist possible.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe by Prior Design

The front of the very elegant Mercedes E-Class coupé has been given a new bumper with side vents and a spoiler blade

The designers at PRIOR DESIGN have come up trumps just in time for the New Year with a customised body kit for the new E-Class Coupé. Following on from their body kit for the CLK W209, the designers from Kamp-Lintfort have now come up with further impressive evidence of their exceptionally skilled eye for the sporting contours and perfect proportions of cars of the Mercedes-Benz marque.

The front of what is fundamentally a very elegant coupé has been given a new bumper with side vents and a spoiler blade. A set of side sills that, from a visual perspective, perfectly connect the car’s front and rear have been used to create the impression of a lowered outline. At the back there is a rear bumper extension with three fins, a spoiler lip for the boot, and a roof edge spoiler, with all three components also available in genuine carbon fibre as an option.

The visual effect is greatly enhanced by the new PRIOR GT wheel rims, fitted as 8.5 x 20-inch wheels at the front and 9.5 x 20-inch wheels at the rear. Together with the in-house lowering by 35 millimetres, they ensure that the wheel arches are filled perfectly. The PRIOR GT rims are available in matt black, gloss black and silver.

With regard to the exhaust system, the customer has the choice between a tail pipe on the left and a complete sports 4-pipe exhaust system in stainless steel. The exhaust system is, of course, MADE IN GERMANY, as are all the other parts of the body kit.

It is also worth mentioning that all the parts of this conversion kit also fit the convertible version of the E-Class. PRIOR DESIGN offers a range of trim parts in carbon for the interior.

PRIOR DESIGN offers various increased performance options on site of up to 55 kW / 75 bhp depending on the engine version.

Mercedes-Benz Has Delivered Over 300,000 New E-Class Since Its Launch

Mercedes-Benz has delivered around 230,000 E-Class sedans, 28,000 estates, and 60,000 coupes and convertibles to date

Since its launch, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been thrilling customers around the world, and more than 300,000 units been delivered to date. Says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The new E-Class is a great success, setting standards not only for safety, comfort and efficiency, but also for market acceptance. This is demonstrated by the fact that each of the four models – the sedan, the estate, the coupe and the convertible – is currently the world’s best-selling vehicle in its comparative class. We are delighted about the positive customer response to the new E-Class models since they are essential to the success of Mercedes-Benz.”

Around 230,000 sedans, 28,000 estates, and 60,000 coupes and convertibles of the new E-Class family have been delivered to customers to date. The sedan was launched in March 2009, followed by the coupe two months later in May and by the estate in November. The market introduction of the convertible in March 2010 completed the model family, ensuring that Mercedes-Benz now offers an unparalleled range of products in this segment.

The sedan took the global lead in its comparative class only one month after its market launch and has since then successfully held this position. The vehicle is way ahead of its competitors, with a market share of more than 50 percent in Germany, around 40 percent in the rest of Western Europe, and over 30 percent in the U.S. In the first half of 2010, Mercedes-Benz sold 101,700 E-Class sedans worldwide, an increase of 62 percent on the same period last year. A long wheelbase version of the E-Class sedan was recently introduced to the Chinese market, which will further help boost sales.

The E-Class coupe is also very popular with customers and posted high growth rates during the first six months of the year. The biggest market for the E-Class coupe is the United States, which accounts for about 20 percent of total sales, followed by Germany, the UK and China. The new E-Class convertible, which was recently launched, has also met with an outstanding response, becoming the global market leader in its segment only two months after it was introduced.

The E-Class estate is also very well received, with sales growing at double-digit rates or more in nearly all markets during the first half of the year. In Germany, which is its most important market, the vehicle is by far the most popular estate in its segment. At 21,500 units, Mercedes-Benz delivered more than twice as many vehicles (plus 124 percent) in the first half of 2010 as in the same period last year.

The current E-Class’ predecessor, the 211 series, was also successful worldwide. A total of 1.6 million sedans and estates were delivered to customers in the six years following the vehicle’s launch. Over the past 60 years, the eight generations of the E-Class have thrilled twelve million customers worldwide.

The E-Class vehicles for global markets are manufactured at two German plants: the Bremen plant, which produces the coupe and the convertible, and the Sindelfingen plant, which manufactures the sedan and the estate. The long wheelbase version of the E-Class sedan is manufactured by Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. for the Chinese market.
