AMG Steps Out Of The Mercedes-Benz Shadow

There's no question they've gained plenty of notoriety, and made plenty of money by taking Mercedes-Benz’s more conservative offerings

Mercedes-Benz’s in-house tuning brand, AMG, has never built its own four-door car before.

There’s no question they’ve gained plenty of notoriety, and made plenty of money by taking Mercedes-Benz’s more conservative offerings and dialing them up to 11 and beyond, and it has made two coupes of its own, but it never had a four-door to call its own.

That all changed with the GT 4-Door Coupe it showed at the Geneva International Motor Show today, complete with a storming 315km/h supercar-hunting top speed.

Visually based on the AMG GT range of coupes, the GT 4-Door family is actually engineered around the same MRA modular architecture that sits beneath the E-Class, the C-Class and the CLS.

AMG engineers go-fast versions of all of them, so the chassis, suspension and power train development wasn’t exceptionally difficult for the brand, except for attaching some carbon-fiber (CFRP) reinforcement in the center and the rear end (similar to what Audi and Lamborghini have done with the R8/Hurucan twins).

Fitting the in-house GT styling on top of a born-to-be-Benz chassis was a bit more difficult, though, AMG has admitted. It tinkered with giving the four-door a stretched version of the all-aluminum chassis as the two-door models, but quickly abandoned that option on the grounds of rear-seat comfort and cost.

It’s another in the European premium auto industry’s attempts at richening up their model mixes, with AMG intentionally pricing and positioning the GT 4-Door Coupes to sit well above Benz’s E-Class and its just-launched CLS.

BMW has done something similar at the same show, showing an M8 concept four-door coupe to bridge the gap between its 7-Series limousine and its Wraith, the cheapest model in the Rolls-Royce range.

Redesigned Mercedes CLS AMG Spied on Video

Is this a video of the future Mercedes CLS 63 AMG? You decide.

Youtube user, DrGumoLunatic, posted a spy video of what looks to be an updated Mercedes CLS63 AMG sporting minimal camo in Böblingen near Stuttgart, Germany.  What do you think, could this far departure from the previous CLS be the future four-door coupe.

Audi RS7 vs. Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG S vs. Porsche Panamera Turbo

Luxury Super Sports Sedan Battle

Just yesterday, we discussed with you how the S63 AMG put the Jaguar XJR to shame in a head-to-head matchup.  And now today, thanks to the guys over at MotorTrend, we have a battle between the Audi RS7 vs. Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG S vs. Porsche Panamera Turbo.  Three Luxury Super Sports Sedans all vying for the top position in the pack.  So which car claimed victory?  Read on for a few highlights from the battle or click here to skip to the gallery for the final results.

In there 0-60 mph test, the CLS63 and the Panamera Turbo both took 3.4 seconds to hit 60 mph while the RS7 hit 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. In the quarter-mile, the last place went to the Panamera, with a time of 11.8 seconds and a top speed of 116.4 mph. The Mercedes came in second with a speedy time of 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 122.7 mph. The RS7 again pulled out the win here with a time of 11.6 seconds to finish the quarter mile with a trap speed of 120.4 mph — lower than CLS63’s, but the Mercedes peaked to late for a win.

One of the greatest engines on sale today. One of the pushiest, most understeering chassis, too.

Audi RS7

On the figure-eight course, the RS7, having done amazing when going in a straight line, came in last with a time of 24.2 seconds while the Mercedes CLS AMG held its middle spot with a respectable time of 23.9 seconds (keep in mind a Ferrari 458 Italia takes 24.0 seconds to complete the same distance). The winner on the figure-eight was the Panamera Turbo, completing the course in only 23.7 seconds.  Additional turn testing was done on the streets of Willow by Randy Pobst with some shocking results. The CLS63 AMG took the longest to complete the 1.6-mile road course with a time of 1:24.71, followed by the Audi RS7 with a time of 1:24.30.  The winner hear was the Porsche with an impressive time of 1:22.68.

The downfall of of the Mercedes didn’t like in the engine however but rather in the poor quality tires. Fitted with Continental ContiSportContact 5Ps, the tires are fine on the street but nearly worthless on the track.  The Pirelli P Zeros on the RS7 faired slightly better with the Porsche’s Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires doing the best and showing little wear at the end.

Porsche Panamera Turbo

Porsche Panamera Turbo

As for how the three luxury super sports cars stack up when it comes to your wallet, the Porsche is clearly the loser at $195,510 (as-tested), making the Audi RS7 look like a deal with an as-tested price of $125,595.  The Mercedes CLS63 AMG caused the least pain to your wallet with an as tested price of $116,985.

Call us shocked but but according to testers, world's third-quickest sedan felt dull compared with the others. We'd like a rematch.

2014 CLS63 AMG 4MATIC S Model

The 2014 Mercedes CLS63 AMG gets a performance upgrade & introduces a new model to its lineup with the 2014 S-Model

The 2014 Mercedes CLS63 AMG gets a performance upgrade and introduces an entirely new model to its lineup with the model year 2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model which boasts the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and comes equipped with the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine generating a maximum output of 585 hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. The M157 AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivaled by any other competitor in the segment worldwide.

Mercedes-Benz AMG is also premiering high-performance sedans and coupes with an AMG engineered version of the all-wheel-drive system known as 4MATIC. This system which is geared to driving dynamics offers customers a level of performance never seen in the segment.. Alongside the successful SUVs – ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG and G63 AMG – the E-Class and CLS-Class model ranges comprised of five unique models are now available from Mercedes- BenzAMGwith this performance AMG 4MATIC system as standard.

“The S-Models in particular represent the most attractive proposition in the segment,” notes Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “With its superlative power and torque ratings and the new performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG is without parallel in its Coupe and Shooting Brake variants. CLS 63 AMG 4MATIC

Coupe

CLS 63 AMG SModel 4MATIC

Coupe

Displacement 5.5-liter 5.5-liter
Rated power output 550 hp at 5,250 – 5,500 rpm 577 hp at 5,500 rpm
Peak torque 531 lb.-ft. at 1,750- 5,000 rpm 590 lb.-ft. at 2,000 – 4,500 rpm
Acceleration 0-100 km/h 3.7s (prelim) 3.6s (prelim)
Top speed 155 mph (electronically limited) 186 mph (electronically limited)

Acceleration 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds clearly places the CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC at the top of the competitive line-up. In addition to the increase in power, the special edge of the S-Model is also attributable in no small part to the performance-oriented all-wheel drive with a power distribution ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle).

Perfect traction during acceleration effectively prevents slip-induced losses. The top speed stands at 186 mph (electronically limited).

On the new CLS63 AMG S-Model the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of 577 hp and peak torque of 590 lb.-ft., an increase of 27 hp over the AMG Performance Package which was previously available as an option for the coupe. This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the boost pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. (At 550 hp and 531 lb.-ft. of torque, the CLS63 AMG model also boasts an increase of 32 hp over its predecessor.)

Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine around – with substantially more displacement than its direct competitors.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission for a personal setup

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission. Four drive programs, “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), provide each driver with a personal setup. In “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfortable and early gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear.

In the “S”, “S+” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Perfectly tailored to a sporty driving style is the partial suppression of the cylinders during gear changes. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts. An automatic double-clutching function for downshifts and the RACE START function are also part of the standard features of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel-drive for maximum dynamics

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased torque split provides for signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving pleasure. The 3-stage ESP® has been tailored specifically to the permanent all-wheel drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, the Torque Vectoring Brake performs selective braking interventions on individual wheels in the interest of high agility, thereby preventing unwelcome understeer during turn-in. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive provides optimal traction by using a multiplate clutch with a locking force of 37 lb.-ft., which particularly highlights the powerful transfer of torque on all four wheels.

The technical basis of the all-wheel drive is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is compactly integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission and requires virtually no additional installation space. The torque is transferred from the power take-off via a propellershaft to the front axle. The power is sent from the front-axle differential to the front-left drive shaft via an intermediate shaft that passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low additional weight for the all-wheel-drive system of only 155 lbs.

2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC

CLS63 AMG S-Model with limited-slip rear differential

Mercedes-AMG goes even one step further on the CLS63 AMG S-Model. In keeping with its philosophy of “Driving Performance,” a limited-slip rear differential is fitted on the rear axle as standard. This high-tech package increases traction even further. The effect is even better vehicle dynamics and more driving pleasure, in particular on the racetrack.

All CLS63 AMG models feature the AMG Adaptive Sports Suspension which featuresan electronically controlled damping system. The front axle employs a steel-spring suspension system, while the rear axle is fitted with a fully loadbearing air suspension system. Pressing the button marked with a shock absorber icon in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is sufficient to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport Plus”. The three-link front suspension has undergone further optimization for the S-Model and the CLS63 AMG with all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the newly developed aluminum axle components, these optimization measures result in markedly enhanced grip and agility combined with a high level of neutrality during fast cornering. The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver maximum neutrality and even better feedback and grip at the critical limits. The CLS63 AMG’s 2.4 centimeter (0.9″) wider track on the front axle offers substantially greater stability at higher cornering speeds and improved road feel. Increased negative camber on both axles additionally boosts lateral dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up to perfection. The direct steering ratio of 14:1 ensures extremely agile handling in bends in conjunction with the variable power assist dependent on the selected suspension mode. The CLS63 AMG is fitted as standard with triple-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium gray with a high-sheen finish. Tires in size 255/35 R 19 are mounted on 9.0 x 19 wheels at the front, while the 10 x 19 rear wheels carry size 285/30 R 19 tires. Only the high-performance S-Model features exclusive 10-spoke light-alloy wheels painted matte titanium gray with a high sheen rim flange.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

As you would expect from an AMG vehicle, the CLS63 AMG is equipped with an AMG high-performance braking system. The front and rear axles sport ventilated and perforated brake discs in ample 14.2 inch format. The discs, which are subject to particularly high levels of stress and strain on the front axle, feature the compound rotor braking technology which has been tried and tested in the field of motorsport. Calipers with a silver painted finish and white AMG lettering and-incorporating six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide for spontaneous, fading-resistant deceleration and the shortest stopping distances.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognizable by the even larger 15.8 inches brake discs and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on calipers sporting a the signature bronze metallic paint finish. This ceramic system is around 40 percent lighter, reducing unsprung masses and enhancing handling, agility and ride comfort. The superior hardness of the ceramic brake discs leads to a longer service life and greater resistance to extreme stress and heat.

2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC

S-Model with subtly different design features

In terms of exterior design, the CLS63 AMG S-Model is distinguished from the other models by red brake calipers and the AMG logo on the trunk lid sporting an “S” in contrasting black. The the standard black Premium leather interior of the S-Model features gray contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the center door panels, the door armrests, the steering wheel, the center console and is accented by silver seat belts. The rim of the AMG Performance steering wheel in black Premium leather is flattened at the top and bottom and boasts grip areas in Alcantara® . The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats exclusively feature the AMG crest embossed directly into the Premium leather. emblems. The AMG instrument cluster has some design cues unique to the S-Model and features an “S AMG” logo on the speedometer that is accompanied by red accents on the dials. Illuminated AMG door sill panels with white backlighting round off the exclusive range of equipment and appointments of the S-Model.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

A particular highlight in the selection of optional equipment for all CLS variants is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system. Mercedes-Benz and AMG have created a high-end sound system with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system is capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 playback and provides an exclusive music experience with unparalleled sound. The basis for this is not only the 1,200-watt amplifier and the 14 high-end speakers with neodymium drivers, but also the distribution of the music signals that is precisely controlled by the sound processor. This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) provides drivers with the option of selecting a special B&O sound menu on the COMAND system. In True Image™ mode individual sound settings for the front, center and rear can be selected. The effect: a realistic sound experience at the selected listening position. The “Sound Mode” menu also has various preset sound modes that allow choices between a high-end “Reference” studio sound and a spacious surround sound. While “Reference” puts the focus on the reproduction of the artist’s sound, the special surround sound mode delivers a spacious sound experience. In particular live recordings or concertos result in a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without altering the naturalness of the recording.

Illuminated 50-watt tweeters with acoustic lens technology, arranged in the mirror triangle, add special highlights. High-end speaker covers in silver chrome with Bang & Olufsen logo additionally signal the exceptional position of the high-end surround sound system.

Mercedes CLS63 AMG Stealth by German Special Customs

The GSC CLS63 AMG outputs 750 HP, 1,150 Nm of torque propelling it from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds & a top speed of 217 mph

We first took notice of German Special Customs when they unveiled their original styling kit for the Mercedes CLS63 AMG called the Stealth. This week, German Special Customs revealed their latest CLS63 AMG Stealth.  This time the four-door coupe comes in a not so stealthy, standout  orange.

German Special Customs treated the engine to a makeover that increases the output from the standard 550 HP to an impressive 750 HP with a torque output of 1,150 Nm of torque (848 lb-ft). Only needing 3.7 seconds to sprint 0-62 mph It does 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 before reaching its top speed of 217 mph.  This explains the bright orange color, the CLS63 AMG doesn’t need to be stealthy when its this fast.

The body kit consists of side skirts, spoiler lip, vented bonnet, fender flares, rear diffuser and bootlid spoiler, as well as 20-inch black rims, and KW Coilover suspension.  Not forgotten by GSC was the interior which they updated with a two-tone orange and black interior with plenty of carbon fiber touches.

The world's first 4-door coupe, the Mercedes CLS is a masterpiece of engineering

The Mercedes CLS is sleek and stylish like all Mercedes-Benz coupes but it is the first coupe in the world to offer four doors.  The Mercedes CLS offers it’s passengers frameless windows with an arched roofline for an appealing style with an inviting and comfortable ride.  View the photo gallery below to see the latest version of the four-door Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupe.

Brabus B63S Mercedes CLS63 AMG Premiering in Geneva

The Brabus B63S can go 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds and 0-124 mph in only 10.8 seconds with a top speed of 217 mph

Premiering at the Geneva Motor Show next week will be the latest tuning program from Brabus – the B63S for the Mercedes CLS63 AMG. This will be in addition to the SL65 AMG Brabus 800 that will be on display in Geneva.

Under the hood is a 5.5-liter eight-cylinder Biturbo engine capable of outputting 537 kW / 730 hp  and 1,065 Nm of torque, enough to propel you to a top speed up to 217 mph.  How’d they do it?  Brabus developed the program using state of the art bench technology to design two special Braubs turbochargers with larger compressor units, both of which generate a higher boost pressure than the production turbos.

Additionally, a low-temp water to air intercooler in conjunction with the Brabus Gold Heat Reflection system all serve to improve the power yield because of the lower charge-air temps, improving durability as well.  Brabus also remapped the ECU and added 75 millimeter wide downpipes, all topped off with a stainless steel sport exhaust system.

Put all these pieces together, and the Brabus B63S is a monster, capable of accelerating 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds and 0-124 mph in only 10.8 seconds.  And while the stock CLS is electronically limited to a mere 155 mph, the Brabus B63S has a top speed of 217 mph. Due to the higher rear-axle load of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake however, the top speed for the shooting brake is limited to 186 mph (out of consideration for the tires).

Matching the performance, the exterior of the B63S has been redefined with sporty fender attachments with backlit BRABUS logo and components that are all manufactured from especially light yet high-strength carbon fibers.  Two finishes are available – matte or high gloss.

Monoblock wheels with diameters of 19 and 20 inches are available, with the largest tires supplied for the 20-inch alloys in size 255/30 ZR 20 for the 9Jx20 wheels on the front axle and in size 295/25 ZR 20 for the 10.5Jx20 wheels in the rear.

Inside, the custom-tailored Brabus interior notes extensive use of  Mastik leather and Alcantara. Rounding off the interior is a speedometer with 250 mph dial and rear-seat tables attached to the backs of the front seats; aluminum components such as pedal pads, door lock pins and shift paddles for the steering wheel; and your choice of either carbon fiber or wood trim(s).

If all of these upgrades aren’t enough, you can also opt for the custom-tailored BRABUS multimedia concept – including optional Apple iPad integration and a host of technology features.

You can check out more of the Brabus B63S Mercedes CLS63 AMG in the photo gallery below, or see it in person at the Geneva Motor Show.

2014 Mercedes CLS 63 AMG S-Model Variant Announced

The market launch of the CLS 63 AMG with rear-wheel drive will be in April 2013, the all-wheel-drive and S-Model in June

In addition to the new Mercedes E63 AMG, Mercedes has also announced their 2014 CLS63 AMG that offers the same top of the range engines as the E-Class model. The S-Model variant of the CLS 63 AMG not only boasts the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all‑wheel drive but also comes with the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generating a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and up to 800 Nm of torque. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine continues to be the absolute pinnacle of efficiency: the combination of high performance and low fuel consumption remains unrivalled by any other competitor in the segment worldwide. The rear-wheel-drive variant rated at 410 kW (557 hp) and generating 720 Nm of torque is optionally available with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Mercedes-AMG is also premiering high-performance passenger car models with an all-wheel-drive system geared to driving dynamics. This offers customers even greater scope for individuality and an even broader choice of models. Alongside the successful SUVs – ML 63 AMG, GL 63 AMG, G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG – two passenger car model ranges comprising up to eight unique models with all-wheel drive are now available from Mercedes-AMG in the guise of the E 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG. Additional models featuring performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, such as the A 45 AMG and the CLA 45 AMG, will follow this year.

“The S-Models in particular represent the most attractive proposition in the segment,” notes Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “With its superlative power and torque ratings and the new performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG is without parallel in its Coupé and Shooting Brake variants. Our AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine in the world. The new, customised model variants provide greater scope than ever for individual solutions.”

The world premiere of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake took place at the “Night of the Stars” at the Formula 1 German Grand Prix in July 2012. This unique high-performance vehicle from AMG is a fascinating new embodiment of an innovative vehicle concept. The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines performance with style and utility value as a highly appealing alternative for design-oriented automobile enthusiasts. In essence it represents an unprecedented embodiment of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate.

Acceleration from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds clearly places the CLS 63 AMG S-Model in pole position in the competitive line-up. In addition to the increase in output, this special edge for the S-Model is also attributable in no small part to the performance-oriented all-wheel drive with a power distribution ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). Perfect traction during acceleration effectively avoids slip-induced losses. The top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited).

On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine generates a maximum output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 800 Nm – representing an increase of 20 kW (28 hp) over the AMG Performance package which was previously available as an option for the Coupé. This enhanced performance and power results from adaptation of the engine application, an increase in peak pressure and a rise in the charge pressure from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. At 410 kW (557 hp) and 720 Nm, the basic model also boasts an increase of 24 kW (32 hp) and 20 Nm over its predecessor.

Despite added power and enhanced performance, all models offer high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series production V8 engine around – with substantially more cubic capacity than its direct competitors. The CLS 63 AMG rated at 410 kW (557 hp) with rear-wheel drive runs on 9.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in accordance with NEDC (231 grams of CO2). The variant with an output of 410 kW and performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the S-Model rated at 430 kW (585 hp) with all-wheel drive display only marginally higher fuel consumption, at 10.4 to 10.6 litres per 100 km (243 grams to 248 grams of CO2). As an additional boon, following the implementation of internal engine measures all CLS 63 AMGs meet the requirements of the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard which will not enter into force until 2015.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission for personal set-up

Maximum individuality and customised dynamics – these are the special strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The four modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) – offer the driver a personal set-up. In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. In addition, the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode; in addition, the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Partial suppression of the cylinders proves perfect for an emphatic driving style: briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than before. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel drive for the ultimate in dynamism

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased power distribution provides for signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving enjoyment. The 3-stage ESP® has been tailored specifically to the permanent all-wheel drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, the Torque Vectoring Brake performs selective braking intervention on individual wheels in the interests of high agility, thereby avoiding understeering when turning and cornering. In bends, specific brief braking of the inner rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive enhances driving safety and grip on wet or wintry road surfaces. Optimum traction is guaranteed by a multi-disk clutch with a locking effect of 50 Nm which exploits the frictional connection potential of all four wheels to the full on snow and ice in particular.

The technical basis for the all-wheel drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven rear axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires virtually no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimised design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel-drive system of only 70 kilograms.

CLS 63 AMG S-Model with rear-axle differential lock

The CLS 63 AMG S-Model sees Mercedes-AMG going one step further. True to the “Driving Performance” philosophy, a differential lock is fitted on the rear axle. This high-tech package results in a further increase in traction, ultimately leading to even greater driving dynamics and enhanced driving enjoyment, especially on the race track.

All CLS 63 AMG models feature the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. The front axle employs a steel-spring suspension system, while the rear axle is fitted with a fully load-bearing air suspension system. Pressing the button marked with a shock absorber in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is sufficient to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport plus”. The three-link front suspension has undergone further optimisation for the S-Model and the CLS 63 AMG with all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the newly developed axle components produced in aluminium, these optimisation measures result in markedly enhanced grip and agility combined with a high level of neutrality during fast cornering. The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver maximum neutrality and even better feedback and grip at the critical limits. With rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the CLS 63 AMG’s 24 millimetre wider track at the front offers substantially greater stability at high cornering speeds and improved road feel. Increased negative camber on both axles additionally boosts lateral dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up to perfection, the direct steering ratio of 14 : 1 providing for extremely agile handling in bends in conjunction with the variable servo assistance geared to the given suspension mode. The CLS 63 AMG is fitted as standard with triple-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey and featuring a high-sheen finish. Tyres in size 255/35 R 19 are fitted to 9.0 x 19 wheels at the front, while the 10 x 19 rear wheels have 285/30 R 19 tyres. Only the high-performance S-Model features exclusive 10-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt titanium grey with a high-sheen rim flange.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system

The CLS 63 AMG is equipped with an AMG high-performance braking system befitting its status as an AMG automobile. The front and rear axles sport ventilated and perforated brake disks in ample 360 millimetre format. The disks which are subject to particularly high levels of stress and strain on the front axle feature the composite braking technology which has been tried and tested in the field of motor sport. Callipers in a silver painted finish with white AMG lettering and incorporating six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide for spontaneous, fading-resistant deceleration and the shortest stopping distances.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognisable by the even larger 402 millimetre brake disks and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on callipers sporting a special paint finish. This ceramic system is around 40 percent lighter, providing for reduced unsprung masses and enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The superior hardness of the ceramic brake disks leads to a longer service life and greater resistance to extreme stress and heat.

S-Model with subtly different design features

In terms of exterior design, the CLS 63 AMG S-Model is differentiated from the other models by brake callipers in a red painted finish and the AMG logo on the trunk lid sporting an “S” in contrasting black. When the customer so desires, the interior of the S-Model features grey contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the door centre panels, the door armrests and the centre console. Silver seat belts are also on board in conjunction with a black interior. The rim of the AMG Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather is flattened at the top and bottom and boasts grip areas in Alcantara® and grey contrasting stitching. The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats incorporate exclusive embossed AMG emblems. The AMG instrument cluster in a new design features an “S AMG” logo on the 320 km/h speedometer and red applications. AMG door sill panels illuminated in white round off the exclusive range of equipment and appointments.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

A very special highlight among the optional equipment and appointments for all CLS variants is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes‑ AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system also offers playback in Dolby Digital 5.1 quality and enables an exclusive audio experience of the very highest standard. This performance is made possible by a 1200 W amplifier and 14 high-end loudspeakers with neodymium driver in conjunction with precision distribution of the audio signals by the sound processor. This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) enables the driver to select a special B&O sound menu via COMAND. Front, central or rear sound setups can be selected in True Image™ mode, resulting in an authentic audio experience in the selected listening position. Various sound modes are additionally stored in the “Sound Mode” menu, enabling selection between a “Reference” high-end studio sound and a surround option. While “Reference” focuses on an authentic, unadulterated rendering of the artist’s performance, the special surround sound mode is particularly ideal for live or concert music, creating a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without compromising the natural character of the recording.

The illuminated 50 W tweeters featuring Acoustic Lens Technology in the mirror triangles add special highlights. High-quality loudspeaker covers in “silver chrome” bearing the Bang & Olufsen logo additionally allude to the exclusive character of the high-end surround sound system.

designo wooden luggage compartment floor in American cherry

A further highlight for all models of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. This luggage compartment floor is made of open-pore American cherry wood, a decorative fine wood traditionally used in superior interior design work, high-quality furniture and exclusive ship outfitting applications. Selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed together by hand in cross-bonded layers to achieve high dimensional stability. The blanks are milled into their precise shape using a CNC machine, and the surfaces are sanded to a smooth finish, waterproofed and oiled to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.

Dark fumed oak inlays, precision-cut in narrow three-millimetre strips using laser technology, lend a definitive finishing touch to the design of the luggage compartment floor. In combination with rubber strips, the extruded aluminium rails with brushed surfaces not only protect the wood surface but also have an anti-slip effect.

The market launch of the CLS 63 AMG with rear-wheel drive will begin in April 2013, with the all-wheel-drive CLS 63 AMG and the CLS 63 AMG S-Model following in June.

GAD Tuned CLS63 AMG

GAD tuned the Mercedes CLS63 AMG to output a whopping 803-hp for a top speed of 186 mph

The Mercedes CLS63 AMG is one of the most popular cars for tuners – the main reason its 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 engine that can be tuned to output massive power as well as its exterior beauty.  In the recent past, we’ve seen CLS63 AMG by Kicherer, Vorsteiner,  SR Auto Group, Vitt, Mansory and Wald to name a few.

The latest tuner to jump on the CLS63 AMG bandwagon is GAD with their 803hp monster.

GAD started out with a standard CLS63 AMG, which already has 557 hp and 800 Nm of torque , enough for most driver’s with dreams of speed. They  then treated the CLS to new turbochargers that our from  GAD, enhanced the cooling system, optimized manifolds, installed a full sport exhaust system with downpipe, race catalysts and valved mufflers.  And, to top it all off, GAD modified the software for new boost pressure and ignition timing data.

All of this work resulted in the AMG’s M157 V8 outputting a whopping 803 hp and 1,150 Nm of torque.  Meaning, the CLS63 can go past 186 mph, without a speed limiter.

On the exterior, the GAD CLS63 features gunmetal wheels, from HRE, grille and side mirrors.

Kicherer Mercedes CLS63 AMG Yachting

Kicherer upgraded the 5.5 liter biturbo engine to 625hp and 860Nm allowing speeds up to186 mph on the CLS63 AMG Yachting

German tuner Kicherer recently unveiled their Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Yachting that includes a host of upgrades to the already near perfect four-door Mercedes coupe.

Kicherer paired the CLS AMG with RS-1 forged wheels in size 20 inch on the front axle and in size 21 inch on the rear axle. Electronic adjustment allowed the chassis frame to be optimised, and a braking system with steel flex brake lines and full-cover film in star-graphite complement the exterior package.

Most importantly, for power, the German Tuners managed to upgrade the 5.5 liter biturbo engine’s performance to 625hp and 860Nm. The removal of the Vmax blocker ensures that the CLS 6.3 Yachting can now reach 300km/h (186 mph). Kicherer also fitted a limited slip differential and powerconverter, which increases the sense of acceleration by neutralising the moment of inertia on the electronic accelerator pedal.

On the inside, Kicherer designed an exclusive Yachting outfit in which leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber have been used.

Pricing details have not yet been announced.

Mercedes CLS63 AMG Stratos by SR Auto Group

The latest projects to leave the SR Auto Group garage is this Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG dubbed the Stratos

Last week we saw the German Special Customs new performance and styling package for the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 740hp (750PS) and 1,150Nm (848 lb-ft).  This week, we have the latest offering from Canadian tuner, SR Auto Group, titled the Stratos.

The Stratos is based on an older generation Mercedes-Benz CLS that starts its transformation by dropping the original black exterior by two shades resulting in a smoldering grey finish. A set of bespoke LED DRL systems were mounted in the lower section of the bumper resembling a feature from its bigger brother; the 2012 CLS63 AMG. The center grille and surrounding emblems were then painted gloss black to match the roof and mirrors. And, last but not least, a carbon fiber front aero lip completes the exterior overhaul.

Moving on to SR Auto Groups speciality, the wheels. Consistency was very important in this build, with the exterior featuring such sharp and clean attributes, the wheels had to follow suit. SR Auto Group selected a set of PUR 4OUR monoblocks in a high gloss black finish, tying in perfectly with the gloss black exterior accents, which created a cohesive bond between the entire car.

For the best look at the Stratos, view the photo gallery below and click the photos for high resolution.

2012 Mercedes CLS63 AMG by German Special Customs

German Special Customs tunes the Mercedes CLS63 AMG, increasing its power from 518hp to 740hp

The Mercedes-Benz AMG performance division endows all of its models with extreme amounts of power, but there will always be drivers craving more power under the hood.  And it’s because of this that there will always be tuners willing to supply added thrust to virtually any model.

German Special Customs, or GSC for short, is one of those companies, with their latest example being their new performance and styling package for the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG.

To kick things off, GSC added a power kit for the 5.5-liter V8 engine, which includes bigger turbo chargers, an additional water cooler, a custom exhaust system and a software update.  The result:  an increase in output from 518hp (525PS) to 740hp (750PS), while peak torque rises from 700Nm (516 lb-ft) to 1,150Nm (848 lb-ft).

Thanks to the modifications, the GSC CLS63 AMG is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in a mere 3.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of nearly 350 km/h (218mph).

To keep the handling in check, the GSC CLS63 offers a KW adjustable suspension on the front axle and a new set of 20-inch alloy wheels with Continental tires (255/30R20 up front and 295/25R20 at the back).

Slightly less important than the added power are the exterior updates of the already good looking CLS63 AMG.  German Special Customs gave the four-door coupe a matte foil wrap; gloss black boot; and a new body kit that includes a vented hood, side skirts, revised front and rear bumpers, a carbon fiber diffuser and quad tailpipes.

Mansory Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG in Geneva

Mansory tweaked the AMG twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, remapping the ECU & adding a sports air filter upping HP to 632 HP and 664 lb-ft torque

German tuner Mansory is not known for their subtle touches, but instead for their wild adaptations of some of the world’s finest vehicles.  Their latest unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG at the Geneva Motor Show only provided more evidence to their wild designs.

Covered in unpainted carbon fiber, the CLS63 has been given a wide body kit which expands the front and rear wings by 50mm and 80 mm and includes new side sill and cladding.  There is also a new hood, front and rear aprons and rear diffuser, all rendered in carbon fiber. To add a little pop to all that carbon, Mansory has fitted 20-inch ultralight forged rims wrapped with 265/30ZR20 tires in front and 305/25ZR20s in the rear.

Powering the Mercedes CLS AMG, Mansory tweaked the AMG twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, remapping the ECU and adding a sports air filter. The result is a bump in output to 632 horsepower and in torque to 664 pound-feet.

In order to keep the driver happy, Mansory also reworked the interior of the CLS in leather and, a Mansory standard, carbon fiber, adding aluminum pedals and custom embroidered floor mats as an extra touch.

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG by German Tuner Carlsson

The Mercedes CLS63 AMG receives a 100 HP jump, a more aerodynamic exterior and a luxurious interior update

German tuner Carlsson uses the stylish shapes of the new generation of Mercedes-Benz CLS (type C 218) to underline the vehicle’s elegance and sportiness. At the top of the line is the Carlsson CK63 RS based on the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG with Performance Package which had its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2011.

Carlsson incorporates coupé-style contours and lends the vehicle’s exterior a touch of sophistication with the comprehensive aerodynamic package. The new front spoiler and the front spoiler lip RS made of carbon fibre ensure an athletic look for the luxurious saloon, a look which is underscored further by the black painted stainless steel grille inserts.

The discreet spoiler on the trunk lid and the rear skirt insert with its rear diffuser RS made of carbon fibre ensure extra downforce and more stable road holding even at high speeds. The performance figures are also impressive: Optimized by Carlsson, the engine of the CLS 63 AMG with Performance Package under the long bonnet now produces 649 hp (477 kW) and 900 Nm of torque, compared to the original 557 hp (410 kW) and 800 Nm. This allows the Carlsson CK63 RS to reduce the time for the sprint from 0 to 100 kph from 4,3 to 4,1 seconds.

Finally, the Carlsson stainless steel sport exhaust system with 4 oval end pipes gives the CK63 RS a distinctive sound. Also for smaller diesel and gasoline engines, Carlsson offers technically sophisticated performance kits with the general Carlsson 3 year guarantee. The performance kit CK50 for the CLS 500 for instance raises the output of the engine from 408 hp (300 kW) and 600 Nm of torque to 475 hp (349 kW) and 687 Nm.

The vehicle’s light alloy wheels 1/10 which are available in up to 20 inch also emphasise the sporty yet stylish contours of the new aerodynamics package. By combining five single and five double spokes, the automobile manufacturer from Merzig in Germany is setting a design trend. Thanks to an elaborate manufacturing process, the forged wheel 1/10 Ultra Light generates a weight advantage of 40 percent compared to the original wheels. This allows Carlsson to attain more strength and a distinctly improved rolling quality at the same time. The 1/10 design is also available as casted wheels in three different colour variants: Brilliant Edition, Graphite Edition and Titanium Edition

The Carlsson suspension with two sport springs lowers the CLS by 30mm at the front axle and thus allows an even more agile drivability. Carlsson’s patented C-Tronic® SUSPENSION is responsible for delivering excellent road holding for vehicles with the standard AIRMATIC suspension. This intelligent suspension lowering system drops the vehicle by up to 30 millimetres and continuously monitors the situation of the road. Depending on the road conditions, the controlling device adapts the residual spring travel every 150 milliseconds, thus ensuring optimum comfort and excellent driving dynamics with an appealing look. The C-Tronic® SUSPENSION switches to serial conditions when the speed drops under 20 kph as the original suspension adjustment will already lower the vehicle.

The vehicle’s refinement reaches its peak in the interior. The automobile manufacturer cultivates traditional craftsmanship by using finest materials such as leather, exclusive Alcantara, carbon fibre, best root wood and several other exclusive natural materials. The selections of the materials and the excellent workmanship attest the uncompromising quality requirements of Carlsson’s own upholstery. The CK63 RS experienced a Carlsson interior refinement at the top of the line. The seats and door panels as well as the rear seat bench have been covered in Mokka brown Carlsson NAPPA EXCLUSIVE leather. Thanks to its thickness of 1 to 1,4 millimetres, this pigmented leather is particularly resistant while still providing the feel of a soft leather glove. The extensive tanning process guarantees that the leather skins’ pores remain intact and thus prevent heat accumulation. In the winter, too, this particular natural material immediately adapts to the individual body temperature.

The same high quality and attention to detail is reflected by the carbon inlays in dark brown/matte which can be found among others in the dashboard, the door panels and the centre console. Other high quality parts like the illuminated door sill panels, soft velour floor mats featuring the Carlsson logo and door pins made of brushed aluminium further contribute to the stylish appearance of the CLS’ interior.

The number of variants is unlimited: The saddlery’s applications range from different forms and kinds of perforation over individual colours of desired leather skins to the combination of various materials like leather and Alcantara with corresponding stitching and piping.

Exclusively Central European raw materials of German production are used for all Carlsson NAPPA products. Carlsson also assumes responsibility in matters of environmental protection: the water used during the manufacturing process leaves the German tannery in drinking water quality.

With its comprehensive finishing package for the CLS model, Carlsson has once more proven its refined sense of taste when it comes to Mercedes design. Thanks to its efforts, the already stylish standard CLS63 AMG has turned into a unique individualist.

All components of the refinement include the general Carlsson three-year warranty up to 100.000 kilometres and a TÜV certificate so that the components can easily be included with the rest of the vehicle’s documentation.
