2015 Mercedes CLS In-Depth

The scintillating design of the CLS-Class with its exciting proportions has been subtly adapted to high-tech aspirations

Mercedes-Benz founded the four-door coupé segment ten years ago with the CLS, thus underlining its leading role in automotive design. The CLS combined for the first time the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon. It was also the first vehicle to offer dynamic LED High Performance headlamps as an option, turning it into the lighting icon. In 2012, Mercedes‑Benz built on the success of the CLS with the CLS Shooting Brake. With this sporty five-door model, the premium brand from Stuttgart once again demonstrated its concept creativity. As an extraordinary form of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate, the CLS Shooting Brake is an attractive companion for active people that shy away from the mainstream and who are unwilling to sacrifice sportiness or luggage space as part of stylish touring. In this way the Shooting Brake set another highlight in the line of innovative Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles. Both the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake have long since established themselves as style icons with particular charisma, and will also continue to be unique in their segment.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “With the CLS Coupé and the CLS Shooting Brake we have built design icons which also set the pulse racing faster in their latest incarnation courtesy of their enthralling lines. With new high-tech ingredients such as the innovative MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which start a new chapter in lighting design, the nine-speed automatic transmission or the progressive multimedia system, both models also define new cutting-edge technology.”

The scintillating design of the CLS-Class with its exciting proportions has been subtly adapted to high-tech aspirations. It steadfastly remains a compelling proposition with its long bonnet, narrow window line with frameless side windows and dynamically downwards sloping roof. The CLS Shooting Brake offers additional load capacity with up to 1550 litres of space for luggage or sport and leisure equipment thanks to its sporty, flat roof that extends through to the rear and five doors.

Overall the design of the latest generation of the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake comes across as even more dynamic. This is thanks to a new, expressive diamond radiator grille, a striking front bumper with large air intakes, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as well as new, slightly darkened tail lights with multi-level function.

New dimensions in lighting systems

Both models now come as standard with all-LED headlamps in a new design. Alternatively both vehicle models are available as an option with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in lighting systems with this innovation. Since the MULTIBEAM LED technology combines the very best of today’s lighting technologies and can optimally adjust the light distribution instantly and automatically to virtually any traffic situation, it always ensures thus far unrivalled broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the carriageway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.

The camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus provides the information for the illumination. If it detects illuminated oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, it drives each of the individual 24 high-performance LEDs in a matrix light source electronically so that individual areas of the road are specifically masked in accordance with the particular situation. The headlamp control function combines the matrix light source with the tried-and-trusted technology of the LED Intelligent Light System, thus increasing the precision of today’s matrix light sources and setting up a main beam gap with minimal width. This prevents other drivers from being dazzled, while drivers in the CLS Coupé and in the CLS Shooting Brake always benefit from the best possible – in other words brightest illumination of the road and road verges. The anti-dazzle main beam can be switched on permanently. Thus the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps open up new dimensions in safety from which other road users can mutually benefit.

In addition to the camera on the windscreen, this new lighting system uses four control units per vehicle, which calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED module quickly and individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide exceptionally fast and precise, anti-dazzle continuous main beam and light up the road surface and its edges much more brightly in many situations.

Best visibility on bends and roundabouts

As well as the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp also features a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled outwards by up to twelve degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled, with unprecedented characteristics. For instance, it offers a preview function which already swivels the active light function when the driver has yet not turned the wheels. Thus it provides optimum illumination of the bend early on. The active light function already swivels back to the straight-ahead position before the end of the bend according to the particular situation. This allows the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres depending on the traffic situation.

The roundabout light is also unique, which activates the cornering light function modules on the left and right before entering a roundabout in order to provide the best visibility on all sides at an early stage. The navigation system provides the headlamps with details of the locations of roundabouts along the route.

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS First Details Revealed

In the new generation of the CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz is using the new technology of MULTIBEAM LED headlamps for the first time

In the new generation of the CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz is using the new technology of MULTIBEAM LED headlamps for the first time. High-resolution precision LED modules, each with 24 individually controlled high-performance LEDs, automatically illuminate the road with a hitherto unsurpassed, precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light – without dazzling other road users. A camera positioned behind the windscreen delivers the information with which four control units the ideal light pattern 100 times per second. The anticipatory camera-based active light function on bends and the new navigation-based light function for roundabouts are also unique. The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class already became an icon of lighting technology back in 2010, incorporating dynamic all-LED high-performance headlamps featuring adaptive light functions as a world first in a production automobile.

CLS Multibeam Headlights

CLS Multibeam LED Headlights

With the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps Mercedes-Benz opens a new chapter in lighting design. They make use of the many advantages of LEDs in an innovative way and combine them with state-of-the-art lighting and control technologies. Consequently they offer the driver significantly more benefits in daily driving than all other headlamp systems. MULTIBEAM LED headlamps expand the Intelligent Light System’s previous functionality (Adaptive Highbeam Assist, country mode, motorway mode, fog lamps, active light function, cornering light function, LED daytime driving lamps) with a number of outstanding, innovative lighting features:

  • dazzle-free high-resolution high beams, which react faster and more precisely
  • anticipatory camera-based active light function
  • navigation-based roundabout light function

“The first LED headlamps with all the adaptive functions of the Intelligent Light System have been available to our customers since 2010 in the CLS”, says Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “With MULTIBEAM LED technology the headlamps now are able to react even more quickly, more precisely and individually to changing traffic conditions. On top of this, there are expanded functions of which a driver will become directly aware, such as anticipatory camera-based curve recognition with the active light function. With such features Mercedes-Benz once again is demonstrating its role as an innovation leader in the automobile industry.”

Uncompromising lighting technology

The headlamps of the new generation of the CLS are all-LED headlamps and combine the merits of state-of-the-art lighting technologies to form the MULTIBEAM LED technology. They are able to automatically and optimally adjust the light distribution more precisely than ever before to virtually any road and traffic conditions, always ensuring extensive and bright illumination of the road and its edges without dazzling other drivers. They therefore offer a new level of safety which benefits other road users too.

See far, never dazzle

The crucial element is the new dazzle-free main beam. The purposefully further advanced camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus system from the S-, E- and C-Class creates the necessary prerequisites. Using the camera positioned behind the front windscreen it detects oncoming traffic or vehicles in front, and mechanically masks them out in the light cone of the main beam so that the drivers are not dazzled. Consequently, the high-beam headlamps can be left on at all times, to use their full range without irritating or even endangering other road users.

The new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps go an important step further. They use a very fast responding high-resolution precision LED light module as a light source, which features 24 individual high-performance LED chips. Each can be controlled electronically and independently of the others. This allows the light distribution from the right and left headlamps to be controlled separately and adapted highly dynamically to the traffic conditions with a high level of precision. This makes it illuminate individual areas of the road in highly targeted fashion. Combining the light source with the proven mechanical LED technology, means the headlamp control technology not only increases the precision of today’s light sources and sets a gap with a minimal width for the main beam, but it also generates a new dimension in light output in partial high-beam operation. Compared with the systems on the market today, the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps have up to 2.5 times the partial high-beam light output. This increase is made possible by the sophisticated control electronics in conjunction with the new matrix light source of the precision LED module.

A camera on the windscreen supplies the system with the information it needs about the constantly changing traffic situation and is also used by other assistance functions. Four control units per vehicle calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and activate all 24 high-performance LEDs in lamp module individually.

The additional light output of the technology in the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps is not only used to increase the performance in partial high-beam operation, but also for high-beam operation. Even though the latter is activated significantly less due to traffic density, the range of the high beams was increased by about 20% to about 485 m.

The active light function illuminates bends before they are entered

In addition to the powerful high-resolution precision main-beam module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp contains a further module for the low-beam headlamp which is equipped with four LEDs. It can be swivelled outward additionally by as much as twelve degrees to provide an anticipatory camera-based active light function – a possibility never realised before. Camera-based, the module swivels toward the bend before the driver has even turned the wheel, thus providing optimum illumination of the bend early on. According to the situation it also swivels back to the straight-ahead position before the bend ends. This allows the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 m depending on the traffic situation.

No dark zone on roundabouts

The new and to date unique light function for roundabouts is navigation-based. It activates the cornering light function to the left and right before entering the roundabout to ensure maximum visibility at an early stage.

Advantage: LED

The LED technology offers many advantages: the light from the very bright LED headlamps is closer to daylight and therefore perfectly attuned to the human eye. Studies have shown that the closer the colour of artificial light is to daylight, the less the strain on the eyes. With a colour temperature of 5500 kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6500 K) than xenon light (4200 K). The powerful single-chip LED diodes of the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and their high lumen/watt output also contribute increased efficiency and with an average useful life of about 10,000 hours will also last five times longer than a xenon lamp.

2010 in the CLS: a breakthrough in LED technology

2010 saw a breakthrough in LED technology. With the launch of the CLS, Mercedes-Benz became the first automotive manufacturer to offer a production model featuring dynamic all-LED high-performance headlamps incorporating all the adaptive light functions of xenon systems: country mode, motorway mode, fog light, active light function and cornering light function. The lighting specialists at Mercedes-Benz were also able to combine this LED technology with the innovative Adaptive Highbeam Assist system for the first time, leading to a completely new level of safety at night.

E-Class: LED low-beam headlamps as standard

In the spring of 2013 the new E-Class set standards in terms of light features: as standard it boasts both low-beam headlamps and daytime driving lamps which make use of LED technology. All in all, the high-efficiency low beams of both headlamps together consume just 34 watts and are thus much more efficient than halogen (120 watts) and xenon lamps (84 watts, all figures per vehicle). This means that it is possible to save up to 0.05 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, or 2.1 grams of CO2 per kilometre, compared with a vehicle with halogen low-beam headlamps. LED high-performance headlamps are available as an option for the first time in this class.

S-Class: spelling the end for conventional light bulbs

The next step followed with the new S-Class. Mercedes-Benz continued to expand its pioneering role in the automotive lighting sector: for the first time the new S-Class is fitted exclusively with LED headlamps and no longer uses conventional light bulbs – almost 500 LEDs are now responsible for illuminating the road, the vehicle, the interior and the luggage compartment. New, powerful single-chip LEDs and a newly developed projection module in the headlamp, where light rays are diverted, reflected and projected outwards, make a significant contribution to the increased efficiency.

New optional functions expand the performance spectrum of the LED headlamps of the S-Class and now also of the E- and C-Class. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows the high-beam headlamps to be kept on permanently while driving by masking out any other road users detected in the beams’ cone of light. If the camera-based system detects an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle in front, a mechanism in the headlamp module masks the portion of the LED headlamp’s cone of light where there are other vehicles, to prevent their drivers from being dazzled. Consequently, the driver can leave the high-beam headlamps on at all times and use their full range without irritating or even endangering other road users. There is no need to switch them on and off manually, resulting in a significant increase in the overall driving time with high beam. Possible glare caused by increased use of the high beams and highly reflective signs at the side of the road are also detected and prevented by dimming the headlamps accordingly.

Considerate to others: tail lights with automatic intensity control

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are considerate to other road users also thanks to the so-called multi-level functionality of the tail lamps, with which another world first was achieved in the E-Class and now also in the S- and C-Class. With this, the brake lights and indicators are operated with varying light intensity, depending on the driving situation and ambient lighting (day/night).

If the Mercedes driver presses the brake pedal while stopped at traffic lights at night, for instance, the brightness of the brake lights will be automatically dimmed to avoid dazzling anyone behind. The light distribution is broadened to ensure the lights do not become too dim and that they continue to fulfil all legal requirements, of course.

A friendly greeting: “welcome home” function

One charming feature, used for the first time in the C-Class, is that the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps of the CLS Coupé and CLS Shooting Brake in addition to providing daytime driving lamps, side lights and turn indicators via fibre-optic cable, also welcome the driver by casting a pleasant blue light when the vehicle is unlocked.

Top Stories of 2012

A compilation of some of the most interesting stories we brought you in 2012

Welcome to 2013!  We’ve swapped out our 2012 calendars for our 2013 ones and we are ready to move forward and start a new year.  But, before we do that, we wanted to take one last look at what 2012 had to offer.  We’ve compiled a list of some of the top stories of the year and posted them below with links to the complete articles and photo galleries for your enjoyment.

Happy New Year!

2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake Official Release: With the new CLS Shooting Brake, Mercedes-Benz is once again setting an example when it comes to creativity of design, and as such highlighting its leading role in this area: in terms of its proportions, the new CLS is quite clearly a coupé, but with five doors and a roof which continues through to the rear, it promises some remarkable new possibilities. The idea of the four-door coupé – successfully introduced in 2004 with the first CLS and long imitated in the meantime – has now been taken to new heights and to innovative effect. The result is automotive independence at its most beautiful. Click Here.

Vorsteiner Mercedes CLS63 AMG Photos Revealed: Vorsteiner’s Mercedes CLS63 AMG will feature an all-new lightweight pre-preg carbon fiber aero package coupled with forged wheels and a cat back exhaust system. In the photos you can see the new front apron, redesigned side skirts, modified rear diffuser and the boot lid spoiler. All these parts feature all-new lightweight pre-preg carbon fiber. Click Here.

FAB Design Mercedes SLS Gullstream: Quite possibly the most radically built Mercedes SLS  to date, FAB Design’s widebody SLS tuning program, dubbed the Gullstream, remains at the top of our list. Originally revealed more than a year ago, I recently saw one of these beauties while on a family vacation at our hotel and had to give you a second look. Even better looking in person, the FAB Design SLS Gullstream is a widebody kit that features an all new front bumper, fenders, side skirts, rear quarter panels, rear bumper and rear diffuser. Lorinser Unveils Their Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

The Lorinser CLS Shooting Brake combines dynamic design with efficient aerodynamics

There is nothing we can’t do! This is Lorinser’s motto for its comprehensive range of parts for the current CLS X218. The company, based in the south of Germany, has been developing and manufacturing products for personalising Mercedes vehicles from as far back as 1981. In doing so, the innovative Sportservice Lorinser team draws advantage from its experience with just about every Mercedes series. The skills gained form an optimal base for the launch of the exclusive range of modification options for the Mercedes CLS estate wagon. The result is impressive, both in terms of looks and sound: lift-reducing aerodynamic components, significantly enhanced performance, stainless steel exhaust systems with a sporty sound, striking 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels and superior interior modifications make for individualised series vehicles.

Bodywork finishes in proven quality

Lorinser combines dynamic design with efficient aerodynamics. The result is sensational stylishness with optimised air flow across the vehicle outline. The shapes of the sporty and striking front spoiler bumper blend impeccably with the wider wings. Together with the rear skirt the Lorinser body components ensure reduced lift while providing a new, attractive overall appearance. The Lorinser side skirts form an optical link between the front and rear. The tailor-made body kit is mounted on the serial attachment points, and is available from 6,176.00 Euro (incl. German VAT).

Optimised performance for stretching the limits and improved driving enjoyment The range of performance enhancements offered by Lorinser is just as extensive as the selection of Mercedes engines. For example, Sportservice offers optimised ECUs for the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, which results in an engine output of 322 HP / 237 kW at 6200 RPM. At the same time the maximum torque increases to 400 Nm between 2900 and 5000 RPM. In this connection, Lorinser has also lifted the limit of 250 km/h, allowing the car to reach an impressive speed of 265 km/h. The output of the 350 CDI the Sportservice increases to 305 hp / 224 kW at 4.100 rpm. At the same time, torque rises to 695 Nm with revs of 1.600 to 2.900 rpm.

Lorinser sport rear silencers that have been aligned to the different performance kits are also available. The range includes four-pipe systems, which ensure a full and powerful sound.

Sporty or elegant

The Lorinser rim range has been created entirely according to the requirements of Mercedes customers. Be it sporty and striking, or elegant and sophisticated – Lorinser offers various wheel designs and sizes. The RS8 is a 19-inch wheel with turbine look. The recommended wheel/tyre combination comprises 8.5Jx19-inch rims with 255/35ZR19 tyres for the front and 9.5Jx19-inch rims with 285/30ZR19 tyres for the rear.

The RS8 tyre is also available in a 20-inch design. In this instance, Lorinser recommends using 9.0Jx20-inch wheels with 255/30ZR20 tyres for the front axle and 10.0Jx20-inch wheels with 295/25ZR20 tyres for the rear axle.

Highest technical requirements combined with sporty elegance set the RSK6 designer wheel apart from other light-alloy wheels. The multi-part alloy rim with five spokes and stainless steel connecting bolts boasts a sophisticated look as well as excellent finishes. The wheel comes in dimensions of 8.5Jx19 inches and 9.5Jx19 inches as well as in 9,0Jx20 and 10,0Jx20.

Lorinser recommends using high-performance tyres from its technology partner, Continental.

The vehicle suspension springs, which lower the centre of gravity of the sport limousine by around 25 millimetres on the front and rear axles, add to its sporty appearance. A car lowering set for vehicles with Airmatic is currently being tested.

Interior with perfected technology

As a supplement to existing interiors available ex-plant, Lorinser offers stylish accessories such as aluminium pedals and door sills with an illuminated Lorinser logo. On request, Lorinser offers everything that makes car aficionados’ hearts beat faster – from a personalised set of floor mats to a complete leather interior – and all with precision craftsmanship.

Brabus Unveils Their Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

Sporty-elegant styling with aerodynamic efficiency is a trademark of BRABUS body kits & the CLS Shooting Brake is no exception

The new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake has arrived, and like the first CLS that created a market for four-door coupes, the new five-door model redefines the sporty-elegant wagon. Taking the Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake to the next level is a sophisticated refinement program is now available from BRABUS. The extensive product lineup starts with sporty-elegant aerodynamic-enhancement components for all Shooting Brake models with or without AMG sport package, and features custom-tailored BRABUS wheels with diameters of up to 20 inches. Also part of the BRABUS portfolio are exclusive interior options and engine tuning that delivers up to 455 kW / 619 hp (610 bhp) of power, 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque and a top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph).

Brabus Unveils Their Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

Brabus Unveils Their Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake

Sporty-elegant styling paired with aerodynamic efficiency is the trademark of all BRABUS body kits. As always, the body components for the new CLS Shooting Brake were developed in the wind tunnel. They are manufactured from flexible Pur-R-Rim high-grade plastics or from carbon fibers depending on the version.

The CLS 250 and 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesel models and the CLS 350 and 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with production aerodynamics outfit can be upgraded with the BRABUS front spoiler, the BRABUS front fascia attachments with integrated LED daytime running lights, the sport fenders and the BRABUS side skirts with integrated entrance lights.

For vehicles equipped with AMG sport package BRABUS offers a striking BRABUS front spoiler lip that attaches to the underside of the front fascia. The CLS 63 AMG can be refined with an additional front spoiler and fender attachments with backlit BRABUS logo. Their clear-coated carbon-fiber construction lends the sport wagon full-blooded racing looks.

BRABUS Monoblock wheels in sizes ranging from 8.5Jx17 to 10.5Jx20 also play a major role in the exclusive BRABUS looks of the new CLS Shooting Brake. The OEM-quality alloy wheels are available in six different designs. The most exclusive version on offer features BRABUS Monoblock F, Q or R designs with a diameter of 20 inches. The latest addition to the BRABUS wheel family is the BRABUS Monoblock R wheel with especially innovative design. Two sets of five double spokes are arranged in two plains. While the inner set of spokes is painted a “Liquid Titanium” shade, the outer spokes are diamond-polished and afterwards sealed with a smoke-colored clear lacquer, lending the wheel its very own character. The largest tires supplied by BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA for the 20-inch version come in size 255/30 ZR 20 in front and in size 295/25 ZR 20 for the rear axle.

The BRABUS suspension options are specifically calibrated to the use of sporty low-profile tires. They were developed in tandem with technology partner BILSTEIN. The lineup ranges from BRABUS sport springs to complete suspensions and the BRABUS suspension module that lowers the ride height of cars equipped with the semi-active AIRMATIC air suspension system by about 35 millimeters.

BRABUS offers the world’s largest program of performance tuning for Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The ECO PowerXtra D4 performance kit bumps the power output of the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY by 22.8 kW / 31 hp and boosts peak torque to 560 Nm (446 lb-ft).

For the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY there is BRABUS ECO PowerXtra D6S tuning. Thanks to its plug-and-play design the auxiliary control unit can be installed by any authorized Mercedes-Benz workshop and any BRABUS center of competence in less than 45 minutes.

As a special feature this high-tech performance tuning system allows the driver to influence the power yield through the selection of the transmission program of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic gearbox. In Eco mode only peak torque is increased, from standard 620 Nm to 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. This selection leaves the maximum power output unchanged. If sport mode is activated or gears are shifted manually, the increase in peak torque is accompanied by a boost in power output from 195 kW / 265 hp (261 bhp) to 230 kW / 313 hp (308 bhp) at a low 3,600 rpm. The tuned turbodiesel accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 mph).

It goes without saying that BRABUS performance tuning is also available for the gasoline-powered versions of the CLS Shooting Brake. The BRABUS B50 – 500 performance tuning was developed for the V8 Biturbo engine of the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY. As the name indicates, this tuning kit produces 368 kW / 500 hp (493 bhp) and a peak torque of 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) and in conjunction with the BRABUS Vmax unit gives the wagon a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

Two ultra-powerful tuning options are available for the top-of-the-line CLS 63 AMG model. Both BRABUS power upgrades for the 5.5-liter eight-cylinder Biturbo engine comprise an auxiliary control unit for the engine electronics and an additional water-to-air intercooler powered by an auxiliary electric pump. In both cases the lower temperature of the charge air benefits not only power yield but also engine longevity even under extreme operating conditions. After the installation of the BRABUS B63 – 620 version the driver commands 455 kW / 619 hp (610 bhp) of power at a low 5,500 rpms. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 900 to 1.000 Nm (663 to 737 lb-ft), on tap between 2,250 and 3,750 rpm. A sprint time from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) of just 4.2 seconds is just as unique for a wagon as is the top speed of 320 km/h (200 mph) that the car attains in conjunction with the BRABUS V/max unit.

As an ideal complement to the engine tuning, BRABUS offers a sport exhaust system with butterfly valve for the CLS 63. At the push of a button on the steering wheel the driver can switch between a discrete and quiet “Coming Home” mode and “Sport,” which produces a decidedly sporty exhaust note. The stainless-steel exhaust system also adds some visual highlights with its two beautifully styled ceramic-coated dual tailpipes.

For all other CLS engines BRABUS offers fully stainless-steel quad sport exhaust systems. The precision-calibrated exhaust systems also optimize power yield and produce a sportier exhaust note.

A BRABUS clutch-type limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent optimizes traction and handling in fast corners on all CLS versions.

All BRABUS engines are operated with MOTUL high-performance lubricants and like all BRABUS components are backed by the one-of-a-kind BRABUS limited tuning warranty of three years up to 100,000 kilometers / 62,000 miles (see BRABUS warranty conditions, updated November 2006).

Exclusive interior design that leaves nothing to be desired is yet another BRABUS specialty that comes to life in the company upholstery shop. The product lineup for the new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake ranges from attractive accessories to custom-tailored interiors crafted from especially soft, breathable and highly durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara. Scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo, a speedometer with 340-km/h or 400-km/h dial (211 or 250 mph) and the tables for the rear compartment that attach to the back of the front seats add sporty highlights as do decidedly sporty aluminum components such as pedal pads, door-lock pins and shift paddles for the steering wheel. High-end clear-coated carbon-fiber inlays for dashboard and center console in any desired color are also part of the program as are wood inlays in any desired color and with any desired grain.

To top it all off, BRABUS offers a custom-tailored multimedia concept for the five-door CLS – including the integration of an Apple iPad if desired.

2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake – Interior

With a load capacity of 590-1550 litres, the Shooting Brake's luggage compartment offers ample space, despite the sporty roof lines

While the Shooting Brake’s practical merits were not a prime consideration in its development, the new CLS model nevertheless has a number of utility benefits to offer in its stylish interior. Click here to view the 2013 CLS Shooting Brake exterior photo gallery.

With a load capacity of 590 to 1550 litres, the Shooting Brake’s luggage compartment offers plenty of space, despite the flat, sporty lines of the roof. The rear door opens automatically as standard to provide convenient access. A load compartment cover protects luggage from prying eyes. There is an additional spacious stowage compartment under the luggage compartment floor.

A particularly eye-catching feature inside the CLS is the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather with perforated inserts in the grip area, a silver-coloured chrome insert and twelve multifunction keys. The CLS Shooting Brake features the new lever positioning and the new lever design on the steering column: indicator and windscreen wiper for front and rear at top left, electric steering wheel adjustment/steering wheel heating centre left, cruise control with variable SPEEDTRONIC at bottom left and transmission selector lever at top right.

The highlight of the CLS instrumentation is the all-colour, three-dimensional TFT display in the middle of the speedometer, measuring 109 millimetres in diameter. The mileage and trip odometer appear in the upper area of the display, the bottom area displays – amongst other things – information from the driver assistance systems. A three-dimensional image of the vehicle appears when getting into or out of the CLS.

Three tube-shaped round dials in the cockpit inform the driver of the coolant temperature and fuel tank level (on the left), speed (in the middle) and engine rpm (on the right). A large colour display in 16:9 format, integrated into the upper part of the instrument panel support, gives information on all the infotainment functions. The TFT display (Active Matrix Thin Film Transistor), which is backlit with LED lights, uses so-called IPS technology. IPS stands for “in-plane switching”, which describes the shift direction of the liquid crystal. The benefit of this technology is that it displays high-contrast images. Depending on the specification, two versions of this display are available: a 14.7 cm version for the Audio 20 CD device and a high-resolution 17.7 cm variant for COMAND Online.

The centre console fits with the shape and colour of the instrument panel. The control unit for the infotainment system and the car telephone can be found underneath the analogue clock and air vents. The push-button switches for seat heating, seat ventilation, lowerable head restraints in the rear, PARKTRONIC and ECO start/stop function are arranged below this; they have been galvanised and are backlit. The large round control knobs for the automatic climate control, which is supplied as standard, are located in the lower part of the centre console. The controller in front of the armrest serves as the central control element for the infotainment systems and provides a quick and easy starting point for navigating the menus controlling the systems.

THERMOTRONIC climate control with three individual climate modes

The CLS 500, CLS 500 4MATIC and CLS 63 AMG are fitted as standard with an automatic climate control system which not only allows individual temperatures to be set for three zones – for the driver, the front passenger and the rear passengers – but additionally offers special climate modes. This means that if the optionally available THERMOTRONIC system is fitted, the car occupants can select “Diffuse”, “Medium” or “Focus” settings on the THERMOTRONIC at the push of a button and thus adjust the air quantity and air distribution to their liking without having to leave the convenient automatic mode.

In “Diffuse” mode, for example, the THERMOTRONIC system operates with a lower air speed and distributes the air over a wide area so that there are fewer draughts. This is the purpose of the automatically controlled, upwards inclined diffuse nozzle in the centre of the dashboard. In “Focus” mode, meanwhile, the air outlets in the centre area of the dashboard are used for the most part, meeting the need for a direct flow of a larger quantity of air. The standard system fitted in the CLS 250 CDI, CLS 350 CDI/CLS 350 CDI 4MATIC and CLS 350 is the two-zone THERMATIC automatic climate control. They are optionally available with THERMOTRONIC.

Seating comfort allowing adjustments to suit individual ergonomic needs

The seats in the CLS Shooting Brake combine seated comfort with lateral support.

There is a choice of four different front seats:

  • The standard seat itself meets the highest ergonomic standards. Thanks to the filled seat piping, the feeling of comfort when getting into the vehicle is unique. A special upholstery technology is deployed here which inserts additional foam filling immediately beneath the cloth or leather upholstery. The front seats can be adjusted electrically as standard. The Memory package, which enables three individual settings to be saved, is available as an optional extra.
  • The shape of the optional multicontour seat can be individually adjusted by and for the driver and passenger to fit their anatomy or to suit their personal wishes with regard to comfort. By adjusting the seat side bolsters, for example, the width of the backrest can be altered on both sides in a stepless operation by up to 45 millimetres, i.e. by up to 90 millimetres in total. Other bonuses of the multicontour seat include the pneumatic height adjustment facility for the seat cushion, the four-way lumbar support and the high-comfort head restraints.
  • The active multicontour seat offers the same comfort functions and features a massage function covering seven zones and two stages as well as vehicle dynamics support: high-speed piezo valves in the air chambers which adjust the charging pressure and volume of the air chambers in the side bolsters of the seat backs, depending on the steering angle, lateral acceleration and vehicle speed, to provide even greater support.
  • Climate comfort is further enhanced by the optionally available climatised seats: four ventilators in the seat cushion and in the backrest extract cool air from the floor area of the interior and distribute it evenly through a ventilation tissue beneath the seat surface. The mild airflow can prevent the car’s occupants from sweating, even when it is extremely hot outside.
  • The rear seating comprises three seats with ergonomically shaped individual outer seats and backrests with a 1/3 2/3 split. The backrests can be released from the luggage compartment by means of handles on the D-pillar. When the backrests are released they fold down automatically and the head restraints are lowered by their own weight onto the backrests, enabling them to be folded down together with the backrests. The rear-seat backrests are fitted with three head restraints designed for optimum visibility, whereby the two outer head restraints are height- and tilt-adjustable.

The driver can lower the head restraints to their bottom position at the touch of a button. They are lowered by the force of their own weight. The rear seat covers incorporate four filled flutes for a high level of seated comfort and offer particularly good lateral support. The “heated rear seats” option is available in conjunction with leather upholstery. The two outer rear seats can be heated separately. The controls for the rear seat heating are located in the panelling of the rear doors.

2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake – Photo Gallery

The CLS Shooting Brake represents an innovative development of the four-door coupé concept, successfully introduced with the first CLS in '04

While unmistakably coupé in its proportions, the new CLS Shooting Brake is a sports car with five doors and a roof that extends to the rear end.  For it’s lucky owners, it opens up a wealth of new possibilities. The new Shooting Brake represents an innovative development of the four-door coupé concept, which was successfully introduced with the first CLS in 2004 and has since provided the template for numerous copycat designs. The result is automotive independence at its most beguiling.

Europeans will get two gasoline engines – a 3.5-liter V6 making 306 horsepower in the CLS350 and a 408-hp twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 in the CLS500, as well as two diesels.  A 2.1-liter four cylinder in the CLS250 CDI and a 3.0-liter V6 in the CLS350 CDI.  All but the four-cylinder is available with either rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive, the smallest engine making use of the rear wheels only. Acceleration is comfortable at 7.8 seconds to 62 miles per hour for the CLS250 CDI, 6.7 seconds for the CLS350 and a much quicker 5.3 for the CLS500. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.

“Every genuine car legend appeals equally to the heart and mind,” observes CEO Dr Dieter Zetsche. “Functionality is obligatory for a vehicle – our customers take this for granted. What sets a car apart is a special fascinating quality. The CLS Shooting Brake combines functionality and fascination in a way that is unmatched by any other automobile.”

Surprising yet unequivocally coupé, the CLS Shooting Brake’s proportions create a crouched posture, as if the vehicle were poised to make a leap: long bonnet, narrow window profile with frameless side windows, roof sloping dynamically towards the rear and continuing to the tail end of the vehicle. It is only when taking a second look that it becomes clear that the Shooting Brake actually has five doors and offers more in terms of function.

In essence it represents an unprecedented version of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate. It is a special proposition for people looking to differentiate themselves from the mainstream, and who do not wish to compromise on either sportiness or stowage space when it comes to travelling in style. The Shooting Brake is a further highlight in the innovative luxury vehicle series from Mercedes-Benz and, like the CLS Coupé, has the potential to become the role model for a new market segment.

“The CLS Shooting Brake is based on the great tradition of stylish sportiness which has always characterised Mercedes, and takes these unique icons an exciting step further”, explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “It stands for the enhanced design idiom of Mercedes-Benz which is oriented towards aesthetic, avant-garde principles”. This is seen in the impressive series of market-defining new vehicle concepts, such as the SLK for example, which in 1996 established a genre as the first Roadster with a retractable steel roof, the M-Class as the first premium SUV in 1998, or the first four-door CLS Coupé in 2004.

Exclusive innovation in the interior: wooden luggage compartment floor

The second generation of the CLS set high standards in terms of the design and quality of the interior: straightforward elegance combined with innovative details and handcrafted perfection. The Shooting Brake also applies this same aspiration in the luggage compartment. It is lined with high-quality carpeting, and the hand-stitched material is also incorporated into the sideliners in conjunction with Exclusive PASSION leather appointments. Optional designer rails made of aluminium on the luggage compartment floor give an even more exclusive look.

An extravagant touch is the designo wood luggage compartment floor, which highlights the interior’s hand-crafted character. The American cherry wood is a classic fine wood variety which contrasts effectively with the fumed oak inlaid work and the aluminium rails. This lends the luggage compartment the elegance of a yacht’s wooden deck combined with the fascination of high-tech and precision workmanship. The wood is characterised by its flexibility and elasticity, as well as its density and fine texture.

For the American cherry wood luggage compartment floor, specially selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed by hand in five layers to attain a high level of dimensional stability. The blanks are milled to their exact format using a CNC machine and the surfaces are ground smooth and impregnated to bring out the wood’s natural beauty. Dark fumed oak inlays, precision-cut in narrow three-millimetre strips using laser technology, lend a definitive finishing touch to the design of the luggage compartment floor. The lavishly produced aluminium rails have a brushed finish and rubber inserts, and not only help to protect the wooden floor but also feature anti-slip properties.

The CLS Coupé already set new standards in interiors with its wide variety of individualisation options. The Shooting Brake also offers five interior colours, five trim designs plus three qualities of leather to choose from. Customers have a choice of three exclusive wood types for the trim: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and satin-finish light-brown poplar. Black piano lacquer trim is also optionally available. The interior is given an even more progressive look by the AMG trim features in carbon fibre in combination with black piano lacquer. A completely new addition comes in the form of “porcelain” interior appointments which afford both CLS models a sense of luxury normally found in the S-Class. The CLS Shooting Brake also lives up to its role as a design trend-setter thanks to the innovative nature of the materials used. These comprise a mixture of satin and high-gloss finishes used on the metal surfaces.

A whole new vehicle concept: the five-door Shooting Brake

No-one likes to have to compromise: even though the focus is not on the practical elements of the design of the Shooting Brake (length x width x height 4956 x 1881 x 1416 mm), the new CLS model still has some trump cards up its sleeve. With a load volume of between 590 and 1550 litres, the luggage compartment offers a lot of room despite the flat, sporty lines of the roof, and is easy to use thanks to the automatically opening tailgate fitted as standard. A load compartment cover also protects luggage from prying eyes.

The standard air suspension at the rear helps to ensure optimum road holding at all times. For additional flexibility, the rear seat backrests can be folded down from the luggage compartment as standard. The rear seats themselves provide room for three people, with individual seats on the outsides and a third seat in the middle. The three saddle-type head restraints on the rear seats barely affect the view towards the rear, and can be lowered at the touch of a button by the driver. An optional trailer coupling is also available.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, Sales and Marketing, sums it all up: “The new CLS Shooting Brake represents a new dimension in vehicle concepts and offers discerning customers independence at its most beguiling.”

Lightweight construction and aerodynamics: important contributions to efficiency

Intelligent lightweight construction plays a decisive role in bridging the classic conflict between the objectives of low weight and high strength in the CLS Shooting Brake. The model features frameless, all-aluminium doors made from deep-drawn aluminium panels with extruded sections, which in comparison to conventional steel doors are some 32 kilograms lighter. The tailgate, bonnet, front wings, various support profiles and substantial parts of the suspension and engines are all made of aluminium too.

The aerodynamics also make a significant contribution to the efficiency of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake. With a frontal area of 2.30 m² and a Cd value of 0.29, the drag area is 0.67 m².

Drive system: powerful and efficient

The CLS Shooting Brake is available with five engine variants – two diesel and three petrol engines. All engines come together with a 7-speed automatic transmission and the ECO start/stop function as standard. Two models with all-wheel drive are additionally available: CLS 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and CLS 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY.

The entry-level model is the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, with a power output of 150 kW (204 hp). Fuel consumption in combined mode is outstanding for this power category, at 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 130 grams per kilometre. On the next level come the two six-cylinder engines: CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, rated at 195 kW (265 hp) and CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY at 225 kW (306 hp), while the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with V8 biturbo engine has a power output of 300 kW (408 hp).

The dynamic top model of the Shooting Brake range is the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, fitted with an AMG V8 biturbo engine rated at 386 kW (525 hp) which delivers 700 Newton metres of torque and comes with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. With the “Edition 1” variant, these performance values rise to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Newton metres.

The combination of AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering and the optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is the epitome of superlative driving dynamics. In terms of appearance, the CLS 63 AMG cuts an impressive figure with its athletic lines and its distinctive exterior and interior design.

Efficiency is also increased by the stand-fit electro-mechanical Direct-Steer system. This represents a radical development in the relationship between the driver, car and road surface. For the first time, it gives engineers the freedom to choose and programme many of the parameters that influence steering feedback. They were thus able to define a Mercedes-Benz feeling behind the wheel. In addition to fuel economy, the result is a considerable improvement in handling and agility. The electromechanical Direct-Steer system has also made Active Park Assist possible. The CLS Shooting Brake is not only able to detect parking spaces, but can also park automatically.

Still without parallel anywhere in the world: dynamic LED High Performance headlamps

The CLS Coupé was the first passenger car in the world to offer optional dynamic LED High Performance headlamps, which combine the exciting colour elements of LED technology – similar to those of daytime driving lights – with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon generation. Some 95 percent of all customers opt for these lights in the CLS Coupé. The CLS Shooting Brake is also optionally available with the new light system. It offers the proven Intelligent Light System in combination with LED technology. The headlamps, with their 71 LED lamps in total, look exciting; and they serve to underline the unmistakable appearance of the CLS. The light specialists at Mercedes-Benz have additionally managed to combine the LED technology with Adaptive Highbeam Assist, resulting in a totally new quality of illumination at night.

In contrast to other vehicles equipped with LED headlamps, no compromises are now necessary with respect to the functionality and performance of the lighting technology. There are further arguments for LED-based lighting technology: the average operating life of an LED is around 10,000 hours, around five times longer than that of a xenon light; moreover, LED headlamps most closely approximate to the colour of daylight. This means that LED light is in keeping with the normal human perception patterns and that the driver experiences significantly more brightness on the road at night. Studies have shown that the closer the colour of artificial light comes to daylight, the less the strain on the eyes. With a colour temperature of 5500 kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6500 K) than xenon light (4200 K).

More than a dozen driver assistance systems are able to help prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of an accident. Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist are available as part of the Driving Assistance package Plus, in combination with DISTRONIC PLUS, BAS PLUS and the PRE-SAFE® Brake. Both assistance systems are not only able to detect an unintentional lane change or vehicles in the blind spot, but can also correct the direction of travel by gentle brake intervention if the driver ignores the visual or audible danger warnings.

It’s all in a name: the origins of the name “Shooting Brake”

Brake, or the identically sounding Break, was the name once given to carriages which were commonly fitted out with light, variable bodies to transport hunting equipment, for example. For larger hunting parties, seats were fitted so as to offer greater comfort to those participating in the hunt. Such vehicles which were taken out on shoots were referred to as shooting brakes or shooting breaks. Any such vehicle which was used when going out shooting was called a Shooting Brake or Shooting Break. Motorised Shooting Brakes were particularly popular in England in the 1960s and 1970s – exclusive two-door sports cars, which combined the luxury and style of a coupé with a larger load compartment and large tailgate.

Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake Pricing Announced

The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake will start at €117,512.50 and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake "Edition 1" is set at €128,639 in Europe

Mercedes has just announced the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake’s price list for the European market, where the new coupe/wagon will go on sale in October.  The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake will start at €117,512.50 and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” is set at €128,639. The new Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake celebrated its world premiere at the “Night of the Stars” at the German Grand Prix, the night before the German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring. Powering the Shooting Brake, is the new 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine, which puts out 557 hp and 800 Nm of torque giving the luxury kiddie hauler a sprint of 4.4 seconds.

Many of you were not able to attend the the world premiere of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake at the “Night of the Stars”, so this is what you missed.  The event was effectively staged in the style of a fashion show. Before the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake appeared on the catwalk as the highlight of the show, the Mercedes-Benz Junior Team also presented the new A-Class: DTM drivers Roberto Merhi, Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens drove onto the stage in the new A 250 Sport “engineered by AMG” model. They were soon followed by Susie Wolff in the SLK 55 AMG, Ralf Schumacher in the SL 65 AMG “45th ANNIVERSARY” model, as well as Gary Paffett and Jamie Green at the wheel of the new G 63 AMG.

AMG brand ambassadors David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen then introduced the first public appearance of the “Edition 1 ” variant of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. To round off the exclusive vehicle presentation, this “Shooting Star” of the evening drove down the catwalk before stopping on a revolving stage where it could be admired by all of the guests. Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Board Member of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Sales and Marketing, and Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, presented the highlights of the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake in a subsequent interview.

The exclusive evening event held in the Mercedes-Benz theme area at the Hockenheimring also cast the spotlight on numerous members from the world of Mercedes motorsport. Norbert Haug, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, and Ross Brawn, Team Principal, were also in attendance as guests, along with MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.

Our Formula 1 drivers as master engine builders at Mercedes-AMG

An exceptional highlight of the premiered vehicle was the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine in the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1”, which had been assembled by Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg during their visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach on 18 July 2012. In doing so they changed the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine” slightly to “one team, one engine”, as they helped to assemble the highly efficient eight-cylinder M 157 engine, which produces 410 kW (557 hp).

The Formula One stars received expert help with installing the eight cylinders from AMG master engine builder Jens Zeitke. In addition to the signature of the master engine builder, the high-performance V8 engine also bears the signatures of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg on the AMG engine badge.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were especially pleased that their hard work was serving a particularly good cause: the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” is to be auctioned off as part of the TV fundraising gala “A Heart for Children”, which is to be held on 15 December 2012.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is establishing a completely new vehicle segment and is expected to delight new customers just as much as existing AMG enthusiasts. The exciting combination of performance, style and usability is unique. The special feature of our vehicle which has been premiered this evening is the fact that Nico and Michael fitted the cylinders in the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine during their visit to AMG in Affalterbach – in line with the slightly modified philosophy of “one team, one engine”. With their help we are very pleased to be supporting such a good cause.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake has every quality needed to become a star. The Night of the Stars offers a great, sporty environment in which to give this unique car its world premiere.”

Mika Häkkinen: “Sporty cars have many attractions. But as a father, you soon learn to appreciate the practical side of a vehicle too. For me, the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines both of these strengths perfectly.”

David Coulthard: “With maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp), the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1″ delivers everything you could ever want in a road car.”

111 years of Mercedes motorsport

There was also another special reason to celebrate at the “Night of the Stars” – 111 years of Mercedes motorsport since the first Mercedes victory at the “Nice Speed Week” in 1901. In this anniversary year, Nico Rosberg achieved the first Silver Arrow victory of the modern era at his 111th Formula 1 start in China on 15 April 2012. At the same time this also marked the 111th Mercedes Grand Prix victory since Mercedes-Benz became involved in motorsport activities.

CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake – performance, style and usability

Mercedes-AMG is once again demonstrating its qualities as a visionary by establishing a completely new market segment with the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. The new AMG high-performance vehicle is the exciting enhancement of an innovative vehicle concept. As an attractive alternative for design-oriented car enthusiasts, the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake combines performance with style and usability in a new way. Synonymous with the dynamism which is typical of AMG are features such as the highly efficient AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a power output of 386 kW (525 hp), the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. The generous interior and luggage compartment with a volume of up to 1550 litres reveal the practical sides of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake. In addition to attractive optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio to enhance the driving dynamics even further, another unique highlight is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. And as a truly exceptional offering there is also the limited CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” boasting some particularly exclusive appointment features and an engine output of 410 kW (557 hp)..

The market launch of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” will commence in October 2012. The following is an overview of pricing for Germany (incl. 19% VAT):

2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake Official Release

Be the first to view nearly 70 photos of the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

If you are eager to check out the latest offering from Mercedes-Benz, cllick the photo to your left or scroll down to view the entire photo gallery. All photos enlarge for a closer view. Once you’ve had your fill oh photos, read on for a complete look at the 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake.

With the new CLS Shooting Brake, Mercedes-Benz is once again setting an example when it comes to creativity of design, and as such highlighting its leading role in this area: in terms of its proportions, the new CLS is quite clearly a coupé, but with five doors and a roof which continues through to the rear, it promises some remarkable new possibilities. The idea of the four-door coupé – successfully introduced in 2004 with the first CLS and long imitated in the meantime – has now been taken to new heights and to innovative effect. The result is automotive independence at its most beautiful.

According to CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche: “Any memorable machine is equal parts art and science. A car has to first deliver in function – the ticket of entry – and then in fascination: the ticket to real excitement. The CLS Shooting Brake excels on both accounts – unlike any other car in the market”.

The proportions of the CLS Shooting Brake are surprising but clearly those of a coupé, and create a basic stance which makes it look ready for the off: the long bonnet, narrow-look windows with frameless side windows, and dynamic roof sloping back towards the rear. It is only when taking a second look that it becomes clear that the Shooting Break actually has five doors and offers “more” in terms of function.

“The CLS Shooting Brake is based on the great tradition of stylish sportiness which has always characterised Mercedes, and takes these unique icons an exciting step further”, explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes‑Benz.

It is lined with high-quality carpet, and the hand-stitched material is also incorporated into the sideliners in conjunction with leather appointments. Optional designer loading rails made of aluminium give an even more exclusive look.

An extravagant and unique feature for the automotive industry is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor, which serves to underscore the hand-finished nature of the interior. Cherry tree wood is a classic among fine wood species and contrasts perfectly with the inlaid smoked oak and aluminium rails. This affords the luggage compartment a touch of elegance normally found on yachts, combined with the exciting worlds of technology and precision craftsmanship. The wood is characterised by its flexibility and elasticity, as well as its density and fine texture. For the luggage compartment floor made

of American cherry tree wood, selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed together by hand in five cross-bonded layers to achieve high dimensional stability. The blanks are milled into their precise shape using a CNC machine, and the surfaces sanded to a smooth finish and waterproofed to maintain the natural beauty of the wood. Inlaid work using darker smoked oak, precisely cut into three millimetre strips using laser technology, helps to enhance the design of the wooden floor. The lavishly produced aluminium rails have a brushed finish and rubber inserts, and not only help to protect the wooden floor but also feature anti-slip properties.

The CLS coupé already set new standards in interiors with its wide variety of individualisation options. The Shooting Brake also offers five interior colours, five trim designs and also three qualities of leather to choose from. Customers have a choice of three exclusive wood types: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and satin-finish light-brown poplar. The interior is given an even more progressive look with the addition of piano lacquer or AMG carbon fibre/black piano lacquer trim elements. A completely new addition comes in the form of porcelain interior appointments which afford both CLS models a sense of luxury normally found in the S-Class. The CLS Shooting Brake also lives up to its role as a design icon thanks to the innovative nature of the materials used. These comprise a mixture of satin and high-gloss finishes used on the metal surfaces.

A new dimension in vehicle concepts: the four-door Shooting Brake

No-one likes to have to compromise: even when the focus is not on the practical elements of the design of the Shooting Brake (length x width x height: 4956 x 1881 x 1413 mm), the new CLS model still has some trump cards up its sleeve.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Board Member of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Sales & Marketing, sums it all up: “The new CLS Shooting Brake represents a new dimension in vehicle concepts and offers discerning customers independence at its most beautiful.”

Lightweight construction and aerodynamics: important contributions to efficiency

Intelligent lightweight construction plays a decisive role in bridging the classic conflict between the objectives of low weight and high strength in the CLS Shooting Brake. The model features frameless, all-aluminium doors made from deep-drawn aluminium panels with extruded sections, and in comparison with conventional steel doors, are some 24 kilograms lighter.

The CLS Shooting Brake is available with four different engine variants – two diesel engines and two petrol engines. Features common to all engines include the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission as well as the ECO start/stop function. In addition, two models are available with all-wheel drive: the CLS 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY and the CLS 500 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY.

The entry-level model is the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY producing 150 kW (204 hp). Combined fuel consumption is 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, an excellent level for this performance class and equivalent to CO2 emissions of 139 grams per kilometre. Coming in above this are the two six-cylinder models: the CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY producing 195 kW (265 hp) and the CLS 350 BlueEFFICIENCY producing 225 kW (306 hp). The top-of-the-range model is the CLS 500 BlueEFFICIENCY with a V8 biturbo engine producing 300 kW (408 hp).

Efficiency is also increased by the standard electro-mechanical power steering EPS (Electric Power Steering). EPS is a radical move in the relationship between the driver, car and road surface. This is because for the first time, it gives engineers the freedom to choose and programme many of the parameters that influence steering feedback. Another world exclusive: dynamic full LED headlamps

It’s all in a name: the origins of the name “Shooting Break”

Break, or the homonym Brake, was the name once given to carriages used to “break” in wild horses and also to restrict (or “brake”) their urge to move, so that they could be put to use as work horses. Since the carts could easily be broken as part of this process, people tended not to use ones which they may have urgently needed for other purposes. Where necessary, “Brakes” were often fitted out with variable bodies, which were only really used to carry along anything that may have been necessary for the hunt, for example. Any such vehicle which was used when going out shooting was called a Shooting Brake or Shooting Break. Motorised Shooting Brakes were popular in England in the 60s and 70s – exclusive two-door sports cars, which combined the luxury and style of a coupé with a larger load compartment and large tailgate.

Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake First Official Photo and Details

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake is scheduled to have its world debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show this September

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake is scheduled to have its world debut at the 2012 Paris Auto Show this September. Today, however, the first official photos and details have hit the web.

So far the car has only been announced for Europe, where it will go on sale in November but it will likely make its way to the U.S. market.

The guts of the Shooting Brake is shared with the CLS four-door coupe, however, the CLS Shooting Brake is completely unique from the windshield back. The car has a slightly longer wheelbase, offering extra legroom to backseat passengers and additional storage space.

Despite being only 16 mm longer than the regular CLS, and 3 mm lower, the CLS Shooting Brake offers 54.7 cubic feet of storage space when the rear seats are folded down. Sat up and around 21 cubic feet of storage is still available.

On the inside, Mercedes is filling the car with the finest finishes, cherry-wood decking for the cargo area and the option of fine porcelain accents in the cabin. But, if this seems a bit too much for you, standard leather and wood trim will also be available.

At the time of its European launch there will only be two versions will be available, both diesel. An entry-level CLS250 CDI with 201 horsepower and a CLS350 CDI with 261 horsepower. Additional variants will likely be announced shortly after the November launch, and should include a high-performance CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake powered by the same 518-horsepower twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 found in the current CLS63 AMG four-door.

The photos clearly show the Shooting Brake with the same waistline as the saloon and what appear to be identical tail-lights

The Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake has been spied once again, and with only minimal coverage on the rear end, we are able to see more of the CLS Shooting Brake styling elements than ever before.

The photos clearly show the Shooting Brake with the same waistline as the saloon and what appear to be identical tail-lights. The roofline slopes downwards at the rear to maintain a CLS coupe styled profile, and we can see a top-mounted wind deflector above the rear windscreen.

The tailgate is bordered by the tail-lights and bumper, and the lower section of the bumper has the same shape as the saloon’s. The only thing left to our imagination is the rear side window, which has been covered by black covering with a dummy window line.

Engine options have yet to be confirmed, however, power will likely be generated from a variety of petrol and diesel engines taken from the CLS with an AMG option down the road. Photos Via: Auto Express
