The New Mercedes-Benz CLA and CLA Shooting Brake

New front and rear design

With numerous innovations and upgraded standard equipment, Mercedes-Benz is strengthening the position of the CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake as trendsetters in the compact segment. The newly shaped front apron, the revised radiator grille with star pattern and the new rear diffuser sharpen the sporty character. Added to this are the modernised graphics in the LED High Performance headlamps, which are standard for the first time, and the LED rear lights. The new paint colours hyper blue (exclusive to the CLA models) and spectral blue, as well as three additional wheel-rim designs in sizes up to 19 inches, extend the choice for individualisation. As standard, the new CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake models are fitted with 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels in vanadium silver or a five-double-spoke design in high-gloss black with high-sheen finish.

CLA Coupe

Numerous updates make the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake from Mercedes-AMG even more desirable: CLA 35 4MATIC Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 8.5-8.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 193-185 g/km)[1] and CLA 35 4MATIC Shooting Brake (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 8.7-8.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 197-189 g/km) and the two top models CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined 9.0-8.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 205-196 g/km) and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake (fuel consumption combined 9.2-8.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 209-201 g/km)** Data on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are provisional and have been determined internally in accordance with the ”WLTP test procedure” certification method. To date, there are neither confirmed values from an officially recognised testing organisation nor an EC type approval

Exclusive interior with high-tech look, fresh colours and new trims

The highlight of the interior is the free-standing double screen. It now includes a 7-inch and a 10.25-inch display as standard. Two 10.25-inch displays with a wide-screen look are optionally available. They offer a holistic high-tech experience and create an exceptionally open spatial architecture. The steering wheel of the current generation is upholstered in leather Nappa as standard. Alternatively, the multifunction sports steering wheel is available in ARTICO man made leather for the first time. The new trim elements in a dark carbon look, open-pore brown lime wood or brown MICROCUT microfibre (AMG Line only) further enhance the interior. A heated steering wheel rim is also available in the AMG Line for the first time.

The comfort seats are also part of the new high-quality standard in the CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake. They are fitted as standard with a combination of ARTICO man-made leather and three-dimensionally embossed fabric in black. They are also optionally available in trendy sage grey. The Progressive equipment line offers three interior colours: black, macchiato beige and sage grey. In the AMG Line, the standard seat upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/microfibre MICROCUT is now also available in bahia brown. A total of five upholstery colours are available in the AMG Line: black, bahia brown, sage grey, titanium grey pearl/black and, for the first time, red pepper/black.

The fabric cover of the comfort seat consists of 100% recycled materials. In the ARTICO/MICROCUT seat cover, this proportion is 65% in the seat mirror and 85% in the bottom fabric. The use of recycled materials is an important measure on the way to CO2 neutrality. As early as the end of this decade, Mercedes-Benz aims to at least halve the CO2 emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle compared to 2020. From 2039 onwards, the passenger car and van fleet aims to be CO2-neutral with offsets across the entire automotive value chain.

Significantly upgraded equipment and simplified offer logic

Mercedes-Benz has significantly upgraded the standard equipment and tailored the offer logic even more precisely to specific customer wishes. For example, the basic equipment of the two new CLA models already includes Highbeam Assist, a reversing camera and the USB package in addition to the leather steering wheel and LED front headlamps. From vehicles equipped with the Progressive trim line onwards, customers also receive the Parking Package and Mirror Package as well as the EASY-PACK tailgate for the CLA Shooting Brake.

Other functional equipment is bundled into packages based on real customer behaviour. In terms of design scopes such as colours, upholstery, trims and wheels, customers can configure vehicles as individually as possible.

Latest generation MBUX and Burmester® sound system with Dolby Atmos

The CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake feature the latest generation of MBUX – with newly designed display styles: “Classic” provides all relevant driver information, “Sporty” impresses with the dynamic rev counter and “Discreet” is limited to the most essential items. Together with the three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service) and seven colour worlds, the instrument cluster and central display can be individualised according to the driver’s wishes and the situation. The central display offers all previous functions such as navigation, media, phone, vehicle, etc. and can be operated conveniently as a touchscreen.

The revised telematics system impresses with a new design and improved performance. A new feature is connectivity with smartphones via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto Wireless. For further connectivity, the CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake have an additional USB-C port and increased USB charging capacity. All USB ports are now illuminated.

With the activation of online services in the Mercedes me app[1], the Hey Mercedes voice assistant becomes even more capable of dialogue and learning. Certain actions can also be triggered without saying ”Hey Mercedes”. The MBUX voice assistant can also explain vehicle functions. Initially available in Germany, the new audio travel guide “Tourguide” adds an exciting feature to travel information as part of the “MBUX Voice Assistant” from Mercedes me. When the “Hey Mercedes, start Tourguide” voice command is given, the MBUX infotainment system reads out interesting facts about places of interest along the route. The system responds to the approximately 3,400 brown informational signs along the German motorways.

In conjunction with the latest MBUX generation, the optional Burmester® surround sound system now features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience. It gives music more space, clarity and depth. Dolby Atmos allows discrete audio elements or objects to be placed in a three-dimensional sound field and adapted to any playback environment.

The new CLA models also improve in terms of safety assistance. With the upgraded Driver Assistance Package, for example, Lane Keeping Assist is controlled much more comfortably by the active steering control. The next generation of the Parking Package supports longitudinal parking and offers 360-degree visualisation for camera-assisted parking using 3D images.

Electrified and powerful drives

The petrol engines are electrified throughout and include four-cylinder units with a 7- or 8-speed DCT automatic transmission as standard. As mild hybrids, the engines are equipped with an additional 48-volt on‑board power supply that supports agility at start-up with 10 kW more power. The new belt-driven starter‑generator noticeably improves customer comfort and experience. For example, it enables low‑vibration and low-noise engine starting as well as coasting with the combustion engine switched off. During braking and acceleration, the starter-generator recuperates and thus supplies the 12-volt on-board network and the 48-volt battery with electrical energy. This can support the combustion engine during acceleration. The new ECO Score 3.0 motivates drivers to adopt fuel-saving behaviour through a differentiated evaluation of the various driving phases.

More power for plug-in hybrids

Another big step is taken by the new CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake models with plug-in hybrid drive (Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e Coupé: fuel consumption combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 1.1‑0.8 l/100 km, electricity consumption combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 16.9-14.9 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 24-18 g/km; Mercedes‑Benz CLA 250 e Shooting Brake: fuel consumption combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 1.1‑0.8 l/100 km, electricity consumption combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 17.2-15.1 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined, weighted (WLTP preliminary): 26-19 g/km)[2]. The improved high-voltage battery offers a higher usable energy content, resulting in greater electric range. The power of the electric motor has increased by 5 kW and now reaches a powertrain output of 80 kW. For charging, three options are still available: in addition to the 3.7 kW standard, the battery can now also be charged with alternating current and up to 11 kW instead of the previous 7.4 kW. The new CLA models also continue to offer the option of charging the battery with direct current, and up to 22 kW. A DC charge from 10% to 80% takes around 25 minutes[3], providing a versatile charging experience suitable for everyday use.

Update for CLA and CLA Shooting Brake from Mercedes-AMG

  • Newly designed headlights and taillights
  • CLA 35 4MATIC with AMG-specific radiator grille
  • AMG Performance steering wheel as standard
  • Belt-driven starter-generator and 48-volt electrical system for CLA 35 4MATIC
  • AMG Street Style Edition for CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

Numerous updates make the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake from Mercedes-AMG even more desirable. The new exterior design is particularly striking on the CLA 35 4MATIC Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined: 8.5-8.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 193-185 g/km)[5] and CLA 35 4MATIC Shooting Brake (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined: 8.7-8.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 197-189 g/km)5. Both entry-level models have been given an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, a reshaped front apron and a round badge with the AMG emblem that reinforces the brand affiliation. The revised design of the inside of the headlights with LED or MULTIBEAM LED technology and the LED taillights also characterise the two top models CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Coupé (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined: 9.0-8.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 205-196 g/km)5 and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake (WLTP preliminary values: fuel consumption combined: 9.2-8.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 209-201 g/km)5.

New alloy wheels for all models

There are three new light-alloy wheels for the 35 models: standard 10-spoke, 18-inch wheels in black with high-gloss turned surfaces and optional 19-inch wheels with a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with high-gloss turned surfaces or in matte black with a high-gloss turned rim flange. New wheels for the two 45 S versions include standard 19-inch wheels with a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with high-gloss turned surfaces or optional 19-inch wheels in a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with a high-gloss turned rim flange.

Fresh colours for the seat covers

In the interior, those interested will discover new upholstery covers for the standard sports seats or the optional AMG Performance seats. The combination of ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfibre can also be ordered in bahia brown. Sage grey/black is the new colour for ARTICO man-made leather. And red pepper/black is available for the first time for the leather seat covers. For the trim elements, open-pore lime wood in brown completes the optional selection.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA models offer the new AMG Performance steering wheel with double-spoke design and seamlessly integrated buttons as standard. The AMG steering wheel buttons impress with brilliant displays and intuitive operating logic. These allow for important driving functions and all drive programmes to be controlled without taking your hands off the steering wheel.

The new Mercedes-AMG CLA models also benefit from the latest MBUX generation: more performance and the AMG-specific screen design make the brand experience tangible.

35 models technically upgraded

The 35 models are equipped with a 48-volt electrical system and a belt-driven starter-generator. The second-generation starter-generator acts as a mild hybrid, providing a temporary power boost of 10 kW (14 hp) as well as functions such as coasting and recuperation for greater efficiency. The 48-volt technology also increases comfort, as the transitions of the start-stop and coasting functions are almost imperceptible. The powerful and agile 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 225 kW (306 hp), which is variably distributed to all four wheels via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The sporty performance (acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) is combined with a wide range of driving experiences – from very sporty to long-distance comfort. The new front radiator improves temperature management at the limit.

AMG Street Style Edition for the 45 models

A special limited edition is available for the CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Coupé and Shooting Brake: the AMG Street Style Edition. With its MANUFAKTUR mountain grey magno paintwork and side foiling with the AMG logo and AMG pattern in the chequered-flag design, it emphasises the sporty appearance. The same applies to the colour accents in fluorescent orange. The edition rolls on 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a five-twin-spoke design in matte black with a gloss-turned rim flange. Optionally, customers can order the Street Style Edition with 19-inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design, painted matte black and with a high-sheen turned rim flange. The red-painted brake callipers form an attractive contrast to both wheels. Other exterior elements include the AMG Aerodynamics package, the AMG Night package I and II and the AMG fuel-filler cap.

The interior of the AMG Street Style Edition also has a distinctive design: The AMG Performance seat in black MICROCUT microfibre is adorned with seams and highlights in bright orange. The “CLA 45 S” label, also in orange, carries the brand emblem over to the interior. The AMG Performance steering wheel in MICROCUT leather/microfibre and the AMG trim elements in aluminium (with the same pattern as the exterior foiling) add further accents to the interior. Attention to detail is also demonstrated by the instrument panel with contrasting orange stitching and the AMG door-sill trims with “AMG” lettering, a black interchangeable cover and Edition-specific lighting in red. AMG floor mats with “Street Style Edition” lettering and orange stitching complete the high-quality interior design.

With an output of 310 kW (421 hp), the Coupé and Shooting Brake are powerfully motorised. The compact sports cars accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is limited to 270 km/h. In addition to the pure performance figures, the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine impresses with its spontaneous response. The fully variable all-wheel drive with AMG TORQUE CONTROL makes a significant contribution to the dynamic driving experience. The rear-axle transmission contains two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches, each of which is connected to a driveshaft on the rear axle. This allows the drive power to be distributed variably not only between the front and rear axles, but also wheel-selectively between the left and right rear wheels.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

Like the previous model, the new CLA Shooting Brake comes onto the market in September 2019.

The interior of the CLA Shooting Brake displays the modern, cool and high quality ambience of the Coupé. In addition, it offers passengers more space than the predecessor model in the shoulder, head and elbow areas. The digital environment of the CLA’s technophile customers is integrated into the interior in a creatively and technically pioneering way. Thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience with intelligent interior assistants and refined voice recognition – operation of ever more functions is becoming more natural and much simpler.

Great emphasis is placed on individualisation in the new Shooting Brake with the Progressive and AMG Line equipment lines as well as an increasing and diverse range of apps and services, which can be downloaded from Mercedes me depending on your own preferences and called up via MBUX.

This CLA is thus aimed at customers for whom, just a few years ago, Mercedes‑Benz was not the first thing that came to mind when they were looking to buy a car. “We want to address young individualists with the particularly expressive design of the CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake. Furthermore, the new CLA Shooting Brake offers more space than its predecessor – for sports equipment and much more”, states Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars sales.

Like the previous model, the new CLA Shooting Brake will be manufactured at the Kecskemét plant (Hungary) and comes onto the market in September 2019.

Design: Sports car with load space

Mercedes-Benz introduced the first generation of the CLA Shooting Brake in 2015: a five-door, clearly a Coupé in terms of its proportions, and yet with considerable effective load space thanks to the roof which continues through to the rear and the rear door. The new CLA Shooting Brake is also a designer car, which in the first instance is emotionally appealing on account of its proportions: a long bonnet, compact greenhouse with coupé-like windowlines, muscular shoulders over the rear wheel arch and a supplely crouched rear, which clearly shows its sports car genes. The outline of the frameless windows is identical to the outline of the Coupés itself up to the B-pillar. Behind it, the windowline runs considerably higher, which makes entering for rear passengers easier. Elongated into the rear, it tapers off into an acute angle.

The distinctive front end tilted forward (“sharknose”) and the elongated bonnet with striking powerdomes form dynamic style elements. The number of character lines has been reduced, for example, the shoulder line has been completely dispensed with. The surfaces are structured with soft sculptural curvatures.

These emphasise outlines and proportions and define the vehicle’s character. It is 48 millimetres longer than before, 53 mm wider but 2 mm lower. The flat headlamps, the low-slung bonnet and the diamond radiator grille with central star mark the typical Mercedes-Benz sports car look. The narrow two-part rear lamps and the license plate positioned in the bumper are typical for the GT rear with a flush transition between the rear bumper and the tailgate. The CLA Shooting Brake strikes an impressive pose on the road and looks athletic from every angle. At 871 millimetres, the boot opening is significantly wider than in the previous model (635 mm). In addition, the tailgate can also be opened contactlessly with EASY-PACK and HANDS-FREE ACCESS.

The interior of the passenger compartment is identical to that of the Coupé. Both CLAs offer unique room architecture, especially on account of the avant-garde instrument panel: the widescreen display is completely free-standing with no hood on the wing-shaped main body of the instrument panel. This stretches continuously from one front door to the other. The lower section of the instrument panel is visually separated from the main body of the instrument cluster by a “trench”. The ambient lighting amplifies this effect, offering a selection of 64 colours, ten colour worlds and various effects in three brightness zones. The three air vents are incorporated here, and their sporty turbine look appeals to the senses even without the lighting.

Digital home on wheels: MBUX keeps on learning

Mercedes-Benz User Experience, MBUX for short, defines the experience in the interior of Mercedes-Benz models since the beginning of 2018 and develops from model to model in line with the digital world. A high-level computing capacity, bright screens and graphics, individualisable presentation, highlights available on request such as a full-colour head-up display and navigation with augmented reality; additionally software capable of learning and voice-operated control that goes beyond the conventional automotive standards and accepts passengers’ instructions following the command “Hey Mercedes”. MBUX is completely customised to the wishes of modern users.

The latest achievement is the MBUX interior assistant, which allows for intuitive and natural operation of different comfort and MBUX functions by recognising movement, among other things. It is even able to distinguish between the driver’s and front passenger’s wishes – and thus knows for whose seat the massage function is to be activated, for example. Voice control understands questions from an increasing number of fields of knowledge and searches for appropriate answers online while the driver concentrates on the road. Due to ongoing development of the system, it is also possible to take into consideration country-specific content providers.

“In addition, the voice assistant no longer gets confused by other passengers talking, rather it only answers the command of the person who last activated the system with ‘Hey Mercedes'”, Sajjad Khan emphasises, Deputy Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars for CASE and head of Digital Vehicle & Mobility.

ENERGIZING comfort control: wellness while driving

  • The new CLA Shooting Brake is even more comfortable thanks to Energizing comfort control, which networks the various comfort systems in the vehicle. Functions of the air conditioning system and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage) as well as lighting and musical moods are used in a targeted manner to enable a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer.
  • Based on an intelligent algorithm, the ENERGIZING COACH recommends one of the ENERGIZING packages’ programmes depending on the situation and individual. If the Mercedes-Benz vivoactive® 3 smartwatch or a compatible Garmin® wearable is connected, the driver’s well-being is taken into consideration in the recommendation based on his/her stress level, pulse frequency or sleep quality the previous night.

Suspension: agile yet comfortable

Along with the CLA Coupé, the CLA Shooting Brake has the sportiest driving characteristics of all the models in the new compact car generation from Mercedes-Benz. This is down to the wider track, which makes the new CLA Shooting Brake look even more athletic, as well as the lower centre of gravity and the multi-link rear suspension generally fitted in these models. The wheel suspensions are not only precisely guided, but also designed for ride comfort and quiet-running with acoustic control arms that decouple vibrations at the rear and hydromounts at the front. A large-scale stabiliser bar reduces the roll angle.

An Adaptive Damping System is available on request, which allows the driver to switch between more comfort or particularly sporty tuning. There is a huge selection when it comes to the wheels. The rim diameters range from 16 to 19 inches, tyre size starts at 205/60 R 16 and finishes at 225/40 R 19 ex works. The ESP® tuning has been specially adapted to the CLA’s potentially high cornering speeds and handling performance.

Aerodynamics: extensive flow simulation helps to save fuel

Aerodynamics was always one of the first CLA’s strong points. Thanks to extensive flow simulation on the computer and fine tuning in the wind tunnel, the new model maintains the high level despite its wider track. The cdvalue of 0.26 is naturally above that the Coupé (0.23), whose tapering rear inherently create somewhat less flow. Apart from just aerodynamic resistance, development work also focussed on wind noise.

Intelligent Drive: functions from the S-Class

The CLA Shooting Brake has the very latest driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support, and thus provides the highest level of active safety in this segment with functions adopted from the S‑Class. Thanks to improved camera and radar systems, the CLA can look up to 500 m ahead and can drive partially autonomously in certain situations, for example by conveniently adapting the speed before corners, cross roads or roundabouts using the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with recourse to maps and navigation data. As a new function of the Active Steer Assist, among other things, there is also the intuitive Active Lange Change Assist. If the Active Park Assist with PARKTRONIC is additionally onboard, the CLA also has the function extended automatic restart on motorways.

Drive system: clean and strong

The top-of-the range engine in the CLA Shooting Brake will be the powerful four-cylinder petrol engine of the CLA 250 (165 kW/225 hp, 350 Nm), which drives the front wheels via the 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission (combined fuel consumption 6.5-6.2 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 149‑143 g/km)[1]. The two-litre direct injection engine has a petrol particulate filter as standard.

By the time of market launch in September there will by a wide range of diesel and petrol engines with manual or dual clutch transmission, front-wheel or all-wheel drive 4MATIC to choose from.

[1] The stated fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures are provisional, were determined by the technical service for the certification process in accordance with the WLTP test procedure and correlated as NEDC figures. No EC type approval or certificate of conformity with official figures is yet available. There may be differences between the stated figures and the official figures.

What Makes the CLA Shooting Brake a Beautiful and Practical Solution

Breathtakingly sporty proportions and a powerfully dynamic design idiom with sensuously shaped surfaces lend the CLA Shooting Brake an unmistakable appearance

Breathtakingly sporty proportions and a powerfully dynamic design idiom with sensuously shaped surfaces lend the CLA Shooting Brake an unmistakable appearance. The elongated coupé-style roof contour line, the low greenhouse and the sweep of the high beltline are the key design features of its distinctive profile, as is the gentle downward slope of the roof line, which makes for significantly more headroom than in the four-door coupé.

The CLA Shooting Brake (length/width/height: 4630/1777/1435 mm) will initially be available with a choice of two diesel and four petrol engines as well as with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The first models will go to customers towards the end of March 2015.

“With the CLA Shooting Brake our compact-car family has grown to five models. The huge breadth of the range, which also includes all-wheel drive and AMG versions, is a fundamental reason for the impressive success story that is the new compact generation – way over a million cars have already been delivered to customers”, said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The range, which now includes five models, covers an extremely wide spectrum: with the spacious B-Class Sports Tourer, the youthfully dynamic A-Class, the avant-garde CLA-Class Coupé and the compact GLA-Class SUV, we cater for a host of different customer requirements in this segment,” adds Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “The CLA Shooting Brake is aimed at active customers who want a car outside the mainstream, with a unique design, which impresses with a high utility value.”

“The highlights include exemplary aerodynamics, state-of-the-art engines, innovative assistance systems and informative telematics services as well as allergy-friendliness”, emphasises Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Daimler Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Like all the models in the compact model series the CLA Shooting Brake also bears the quality seal of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) for a scientifically tested high level of allergy-friendliness.”

The guiding principle behind the designers’ work was that of sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury. “The new CLA Shooting Brake offers a contemporary interpretation of sensual purity and represents the perfect synthesis between the emotionality of a coupé and the intelligence of a shooting brake”, explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “The styling of our CLA Shooting Brake is extremely progressive as well as unmistakable. Once again, we have created a whole new class of vehicle.”

The thrilling design details of the limited-edition OrangeArt Edition special model ensure that it brings an exciting note to the market launch. Orange highlight rings around the bi-xenon headlamps ensure that they stand out in spectacular style. The rim flanges of the AMG light-alloy wheels are painted in orange on the OrangeArt Edition. Orange/black sports seats and orange contrasting topstitching help to define the interior.

As spacious as they come: Beauty in its most practical guise

The elegantly long drawn-out Shooting Brake tail end, in conjunction with the variability that this offers, guarantees exceptional recreational value without compromising on the CLA’s aspiration to represent design at its best. At the same time, at 94.7 cm, the effective headroom in the rear is 4 cm higher than it is in the four-door CLA. Access to the second row of seats is also even easier due to the larger door cut-outs.

Spaciousness is one of the strengths of the Shooting Brake. The load compartment offers a capacity that ranges from 495 to 1354 litres (when loaded up to the upper edge of the rear seat backrests or loaded to the roof with the rear bench seat folded down, respectively). If the rear seats are moved into the more steeply raked “cargo” position, the load capacity increases to 595 litres while still leaving space for five occupants. The width of the luggage compartment, at up to 1328 mm, is leading in this segment.

Clever little details, including the magnetic catch on the through-loading flap in the rear-seat backrest for long items, such as skis, are further typical examples of this carefully thought-out concept. Options such as the electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate or the Load Compartment package help to enhance convenience and variability when using the load compartment.

The CLA Shooting Brake impresses with superb aerodynamics and with a cd value of 0.26 it is top of its segment. The drag area of Cd x A, a decisive factor when it comes to wind resistance, is 0.57 m2 on the CLA Shooting Brake.

The engine range available with the CLA Shooting Brake is extensive right from the start of sales, comprising two diesel and four petrol units. All engines impress with their agile performance, low noise levels and low emissions. The CLA 200 CDI, with an output of 100 kW (136 hp), is particularly efficient: it has a top speed of 215 km/h and a combined consumption figure of just 3.9 l/100 km, with emissions of 101 g CO2/km.

All versions are equipped as standard with the ECO start/stop function and are Euro 6-compliant. All-wheel drive is likewise available straight from the market launch, initially in the CLA 250 4MATIC and CLA 250 Sport 4MATIC (features include: dynamic styling, sporty tuning of engine, accelerator and transmission as well as sporty engine sound) and it is of course available in the CLA 45 AMG. Diesel variants in the guise of the CLA 200 CDI 4MATIC and CLA 220 CDI 4MATIC will follow in September 2015.

Design: Sharp contours and sensuous surfaces

Many of the detailed elements of the CLA Shooting Brake, too, such as its frameless side windows, appear to define it as a coupé, yet at the same time it offers the variability and practicality of an estate car. And with its long bonnet, sleek window profile with integral rear quarter window and the gentle downward slope of its roof as it flows to the rear, it demonstrates the same crouching posture as the CLS Shooting Brake. The long sweep of the roof right to the rear of the car means that it offers more headroom in the back than the four-door CLA coupé model, as well as being easier to get into.

The interplay between sharply defined lines and large surface expanses gives rise to some exciting and characteristic light effects, resulting in a unique look that sets the CLA Shooting Brake quite apart from other vehicles in related segments.

The sporty design of its front section gives the CLA its typical look. Among the striking features that contribute to this characteristic dynamic look are the powerdomes on the bonnet that are such a hallmark of Mercedes coupés, and the diamond radiator grille with a central Mercedes star. The way the bonnet is embedded into the front end makes it appear longer and, in conjunction with the upright radiator grille and the prominent V-shape of the front end, gives the car its crouching posture. The arrangement of the light modules and LEDs behind the headlamp lenses gives rise to the characteristic “eyebrow” effect for the daytime running lamps and indicators.

The sleek greenhouse, the elongated roof contour line, the high beltline with low side windows and an additional quarter window, plus the D-pillar that tapers towards the rear, are the particular styling elements of the CLA Shooting Brake seen in profile. Two character lines define this profile: the new, modern interpretation of the “dropping line”, together with a further separate swell to the flank above the “dropping line”. This supports the D-pillar, which in turn continues the line round to the tailgate. The precise lines and three-dimensional effect of the side design create a sinewy, animated play of light and shadow.

The broad emphasis of the rear end conveys a sense of power, in an interplay of tense, muscular volume and sharply defined edges. The sloping roof line, the pronounced curve of the rear window and tailgate and the distinctive look of the rear end as a whole give the CLA Shooting Brake an unmistakable flair of its own. The narrowing of the car at the D-pillars, in conjunction with the broad shoulder muscle over the rear wheel arch, adds up to a strikingly athletic look, particularly when seen from the rear.

The elegant arrowhead design of the rear light clusters carries the harmonious flow of the shoulders round from the side to the rear end, the horizontal orientation serving to emphasise the powerful width of the vehicle. The single-piece rear light units are set neatly into the body. The light functions are presented in an arrowhead arrangement. Aerials are integrated into the sporty roof spoiler.

Interior: high-quality materials and integral seats

The exterior’s progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle. The interior additionally derives a very special quality feel from the design idiom of sensual purity, as well as the selection and combinations of the materials chosen. Special equipment packages include colour-contrasted stitching.

The twin-tube instrument cluster comprises two large round dials, each with a small round dial set inside it. When at rest the needles are in the 6 o’clock position. The silver-coloured needles are inlaid in red, while the dial faces feature a silver-grey textured surface.

The CLA Shooting Brake features the latest generation of telematics systems. The free-standing display screen features a large screen diagonal of 17.8 cm (7 inches), together with a high-gloss piano-black front panel, a flush-fitting frame in Silvershadow and a fully glazed screen. Upon request in conjunction with COMAND Online, or as an option for the Audio 20 system, the display is available with an even larger screen diagonal of 20.3 cm (8 inches).

The functions shown on the display combine intuitive operation with attractive images and graphics, thus ensuring a positive user experience that adds to the exceptional design appeal of the interior as a whole.

To underline the sporty character, the CLA Shooting Brake boasts integral seats at the front and rear. Luxury seats with a separate head restraint are available on request in the Urban design and equipment line. The rear bench seat emphasises the outer seats (2+1-seater). Colour-coordinated contrasting topstitching is available based on the chosen equipment. The ambient lighting system encompasses a total of 13 light sources in the interior, among them a light in the opening between the head restraint and the backrest. The ambient lighting system is available as an option with different colours: any of twelve colour schemes can be selected to suit taste and mood, helping to conjure up an individual atmosphere in the interior.

The optional panoramic sliding sunroof with its large glazed area provides for an especially bright and friendly ambience in the interior. It comprises an electrically operated glass sliding roof for individual ventilation of the interior, together with a mesh wind deflector. This reduces both draughts and wind noise when the roof is open.

Safety: autonomous braking if a risk of collision is detected

The CLA Shooting Brake features COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS as standard. This assistance system extends the functionality of COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST by the addition of autonomous braking to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions. If the driver fails to act when a risk of collision is detected, despite the warning lamp in the instrument cluster and the intermittent acoustic alert, the system will automatically trigger braking. The vehicle speed is thus already significantly reduced. Depending on the relative speed, this intervention may be enough to avoid a rear-end collision with vehicles that are driving more slowly, stopping or stationary, or significantly mitigate its severity.

Also fitted as standard is the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST. Operating within an extended speed range (60 to 200 km/h), it uses a five-stage bar display to visualise the driver’s current attention level.

“Mercedes connect me”: Accident Recovery, Maintenance Management and Breakdown Management

“Mercedes connect me” connects the CLA Shooting Brake with the world around it. The communications module that is available as standard in certain European countries makes it possible to use the Mercedes connect me range of Standard Services.

Available services include, for example, Accident Recovery, Maintenance Management and Breakdown Management. In an accident, the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system automatically connects the occupants with the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call Centre and sends the position and condition of the vehicle to the rescue operations centre. A rescue vehicle can then be dispatched immediately. The system works automatically, but can also be triggered manually.

The optionally available Remote Online facility allows the customer to connect to their vehicle from anywhere and at any time via “connect.mercedes.me” and, for example, to use their smartphone to find out how full the tank is.

Success story: the compact car family from Mercedes-Benz

The new CLA Shooting Brake is the fifth member to join the Mercedes-Benz compact car family. And what a successful family it is: in 2014 some 463,152 A- and B-Class as well as CLA and GLA cars were sold, which is more than ever before. The biggest markets for the compact models are Germany, the UK and the USA.

The introduction of the new compact car models has seen the Mercedes-Benz brand become palpably younger in appeal – around the world, the average age of its customers has fallen. Globally, over a million cars of the new generation of compact models are now in customer hands, including over 150,000 CLA models. The conquest sales rate for the CLA worldwide stands at around 50 percent. Like the CLA, the CLA Shooting Brake is built at the company’s plant in Kecskémet, Hungary.

The CLA Shooting Brake, the fifth member of the New Generation Compact Car series, is the estate derivative based on the CLA sedan. The unveiling of the CLA Shooting Brake will likely take place by the end of this year.

The CLA Shooting Brake is a combination of the CLA sedan with a low-slung estate roof inspired by the CLS Shooting Brake.  Under the hood, engines will be borrowed from the A and CLA Class, which use four-cylinder petrol and diesel motors. While the diesel motors range in displacement from 1.5-liters to 2.2-liters, the petrols displace between 1.6- and 2.0-liters. No word yet if a performance-oriented CLA Shooting Brake AMG happen.

Thanks to our good friend Andrus, we have the very first pictures of the hot CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake.  AMG updates seen in the photos include the undisguised front bumper with bigger air intakes, front lip spoiler, rear bumper with quad exhausts and also side skirts. We still can’t get a good look at the rear due to minor covering, but we are still able to see the over all roof design in the back.

Everything else shown is identical to the “standard” CLA 45 AMG saloon.

Under the hood is also the same 355bhp 2.0-litre four cylinder turbo petrol linked to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake Confirmed

Mercedes is planning an estate version of the CLA saloon, creating a smaller version of the CLS Shooting Brake

Gordon Wagener, Mercedes-Benz Design Chief confirmed to Whatcar that the Mercedes A-Class family will grow beyond the new CLA four door coupe and the newly unveiled GLA SUV.  According to Wagener, Mercedes is planning an estate version of the CLA saloon, creating a smaller version of the CLS Shooting Brake. ‘The CLA is a four-door coupe as well, so why not do it?” he said.

Rumors of a sportier A-Class model, such as a small coupe or soft-top were debunked by Wagener as well, “We don’t need a sports car, the market is declining.”

Renderings are from master automotive manipulator Theophilus Chin.

Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Rendering

The small four-door coupe takes the majority of its design cues from the Mercedes CLS also a style rebel

Coming off the Detroit International Auto Show, there is no question that the new Mercedes-Benz CLA is one of the most talked about car in the Mercedes lineup. With its frameless doors, the four-door coupe seamlessly carried over the design of the Concept Style Coupe into series production

And while the CLA may look on the small end, it actually comes in at 4,6 m (182 inches) and is bigger than the C-Class. With this said, is it really inconceivable that Mercedes-Benz would offer a shooting brake version of the all new CLA-Class?  While it is unlikely we will see a CLA Shooting Brake anytime soon, the renderings from Theophilus Chin offer us a detailed look at what we could expect if Mercedes were to offer one.  The rendering shows the CLA-Class with the big shooting brake back with bulked up body panels similar to an AMG exterior.
