Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier

The Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier is, in a nutshell, the most versatile, well-built child carrier on the planet

It’s no secret that we here at eMercedesBenz love winter and taking part in as many outdoor winter activities as we can, but as the father of a two year old (with another one on the way), I’ve come to learn that outside options for my son are somewhat limited.  But as anyone that’s met my son knows, attempting to contain him to the indoors isn’t really an option.  He has more energy than anyone I’ve ever met, and he constantly needs to either be playing or be in motion.  He hates television; he’ll barely sit still long enough to read a 10-page book; but he loves to go on hikes in his pack; he loves being towed behind a bike; and he loves anything else that lets him see the world in motion.  Because of this infatuation with activity, I knew I had to have an outlet that would allow me to take my son out in the winter months.  At first, it seemed like a daunting task to take my son out in the freezing temps and heavy snow of the Midwest, but the truth is, it’s actually quite easy, provided you have the right plan of attack.  For me, this meant figuring out how to involve my son in the activities I do on an almost daily basis outside – hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing – and as it turns out, the answer was quite simple, and it existed in the form of the Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier.  How great is it you ask?  Read on to find out.

Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier

The Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier is, in a nutshell, the most versatile, well-built child carrier on the planet.  I’m already sounding overly complimentary, I know, but the truth is, there’s simply nothing else like it.  In describing the Chariot CX 2 X-Country, it’s best to to look at it as a modular transportation system for kids.  It quite simply does everything, acting as a normal stroller, a jogging stroller, a hiking stroller that you can tow behind you, a bike trailer, and in in the cold months, a winter carrier, all thanks to its modular CTS conversion system.  But before I delve into its versatility, let’s first look at the Chariot CX 2 X-Country’s core element: its chassis.

Unlike most child carriers that feature an open design, the Chariot CX 2 X-Country features a unique enclosed cockpit that can convert from completely enclosed to completely open, depending on the weather.  Think of it as a roadster for your kids.  You can drive it with the top up in the winter, but when the weather is nice, you put the top down and enjoy the warm summer air.  The Chariot is pretty much the same.  In the winter, there’s an integrated 2-in-1 weather cover and zip-down PU front window that covers the child compartment, offering quick and easy access to your kids while providing complete snow and wind proofing.  When the weather gets warmer, you have the option of rolling the front window up and letting your child enjoy the fresh air; however, there’s still a durable mesh shield in place to keep out the sun, bugs and debris (say, for instance, if you’re towing the Chariot behind your bike).  And lastly, you also have the option to roll up the mesh protection, offering complete open air enjoyment that’s perfect for warm weather walks and jogs, with a sunshade that still offers protection from UV rays.

From a construction standpoint, the entire Chariot CX 2 X-Country is built absolutely superbly.  It features a variety of fabrics including Touch-Tek reinforcement fabric, integrated premium Oxford nylon fabric, extra photo-luminescent Energlo fabric and 3M Scotchlite reflective material.  I’m not an expert on fabric selection, but I can tell you that after extensive use in a variety of demanding conditions, it’s held up beautifully, and it still looks and functions like new.  In dark conditions, the reflective materials clearly serve their purpose, as many areas of the Chariot seemingly glow in the dark.  In addition to the fabric, the CX 2 X-Country features several other features that bear mentioning as well.  The chassis itself features an external, mid-frame design thats both incredibly light and incredibly functional.  Despite its ability to hold two, the entire Chariot weighs in at a mere 30 lbs., and thanks to two quick release locks in the rear, it boasts the ability  to fold into a remarkably small surface area without any other disassembly.  Another key advantage of the external frame design is the Chariot’s cockpit.  Inside, because there’s no frame, children note a supremely spacious and open area that’s perfect for longer days on the road.  Protecting your child, Chariot has implemented a unique 5-point padded harness system, and a removable padded seat and fleece-lined interior offer a fantastic level of comfort for your little ones.  And what may be the best feature for new parents, Chariot has also developed a variety of interior appointments for new babies, including a baby bivy, an infant sling and a baby supporter, allowing you to take your child out in the Chariot from as young as a month onward (in a slower capacity, of course).

Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier side view

Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier

As fantastic as the Chariot CX 2 X-Country’s chassis is, it’s greatness is equally matched by the ingenuity of its CTS modular system.  The concept is really quit simple – the CX 2 X-Country features a total of 4 attachment points (two in the front; two in the rear), and depending on what activity you’re about to undertake, you can attach different components via these points.  So, for instance, if you’re about to go for a run, you simply attach the two 20-inch wheels in the rear along with the single-wheel running attachment up front.  If you want to convert the Chariot into an everyday stroller, you simply swap the front running wheel with two individual stroller wheels.  And if you want to take the Chariot out in the snow, you remove the front and back wheels, attach the two Rossignol skis in the rear attachment points, and you insert the aluminum tow bars into the front two attachment points.  In total, you can choose from five conversion kits:  the strolling kit, the jogging kit, the bicycle trailer kit, the hiking kit, and the cross-country skiing kit.  Best of all, conversion to any new kit takes literally 30 seconds once you’ve done it before, and require no tools.  You simply use the quick release buttons, and the rear axles and/or front attachments slide directly off.  You can’t get any simpler.

How great is the Chariot CX 2 X-Country?  I said it at the beginning of the article and I’ll say it again:  it’s simply the most versatile, well-built child carrier on the planet.  I’ve had my son in one since he was six months old, and he absolutely adores it.  I’ve trained for a triathlon with him; I’ve ridden 100-miles with him; and I’ve gone on 20+ mile runs with him.  No other child carrier can come close to this versatility and comfort for my son.  Thanks to the ski attachment, I can finally take him out in the winter as well, which he loves equally as much.  I’ve taken him cross country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking, and the Chariot has performed equally as flawlessly.  It simply glides through the snow, and as you can see from the photos, I just had it out in a fresh 12-inches of powder.  The design works brilliantly in the winter, because the clearance between the skis and the bottom of the chassis allows the snow to pass through.  I had my son in the carrier for about an hour in 15-degree temps, and I could barely pull him out of the carrier when I was done, as he was having such a good time.  If that’s not a testament to the greatness of the Chariot, I don’t know what is.

Chariot CX 2 X-Country Child Carrier

If you’re a parent and want to be active, you can’t get better than Chariot CX 2 X-Country.  It’s the best at what it does, which is allow you to get outside with your children and take them places you never could have taken them otherwise.  It’s one of those things that once you have it, you don’t know how you ever lived without it.  Pricing for the Chariot CX 2 X-Country is set at about $950, and the various attachments are sold individually, allowing you to select the functionality for the specific activities you’re interested in.  Also, it’s important to note that to note that everything I said pertaining to the Chariot CX 2 X-Country applies to the Chariot CX 1 X-Country as well – the only difference is the CX 1 is for one passenger, whereas the CX 2 is for two.  The features of both are identical, so if you only have one child, the CX 1 X-Country is equally as great.

If you’d like to learn more about the Chariot CX X-Country and its full list of features and attachments, you can head over to the official Chariot Carrier website for the full details.  If, on the other hand, you’re ready to take the plunge and buy your own, you can do so directly at REI.com, where they sell both the Chariot CX 1 X-Country and Chariot CX 2 X-Country.

Hinkley Hadley Chrome Light

Make your online lighting search an enjoyable one with the experts at Bellacor

If you’re looking to change the feel and look of your home, there are dozens of ways to do it. You can paint, change the flooring, buy new furniture, or go as far as knocking down some walls. But one of the easiest ways to update the look and feel of your home is enhancing your lighting. Changing out your old lighting fixtures can not only give your room new character, but it can also change the mood of your room based on the fixture you choose.

So when it came time to redesign my kids’ rooms from the toddler stage to something more in line with their changing tastes, lighting was a main focus for change as I began the design process.  Looking for lighting online, however, is incredibly overwhelming, as there’s simply a huge number of options to pick from, from an equally large number of manufacturers.  Going to a big box home improvement store is even worse, as the selection is limited to basic designs that hold little design appeal.

After a futile couple of weeks, I stumbled upon the online lighting store Bellacor.  Their selection of lighting is tremendous with over 10,000 lighting options available, but equally as great as their selection is how they help you find the perfect lighting. Making the design and selection process much simpler than anywhere else, Bellacor offers customers a project portfolio to help organize your favorite products, and they also give you access to product specialists that can help you not only with the purchasing process, but with room inspiration and any questions you may have on specific products.  Bellacor’s search is also a great tool, as it makes sorting through the numerous lighting options based on finish, style, designer, etc. incredibly easy.

Finally, with the help of Bellacor, I was able to find the perfect lighting solutions for my two bedroom remodels – the first of which I’ll discuss in more detail below.

The requirements I was looking for in my first light was a classically inspired flush ceiling mount in a chrome finish – one that was energy efficient yet still capable of emitting a large amount of light.

After speaking with a Bellacor lighting expert, one of the styles they recommended was the Hinkley Hadley Chrome Three Light Flush Mount. Crafted from quality steel, the Hadley features a slightly retro-styled design in a chrome finish with clean lines and a single opal glass piece to warm the light. The style and look of the light alone was enough make the Hadley light the perfect choice – the features integrated into the Hinkley light turned out be a very large added bonus.

Hinkley Flushmount Light

Hinkley Hadley Flush Mount Light

Hinkley, a fourth generation lighting company founded in 1922, uses what is called an LED Engine in the Hadley Light I chose.  In the most simplest of terms, you’ll never have to change a lightbulb again, as the light is powered by three 100 watt LED bulbs. In addition to being maintenance free and fully dimable, the LED Engine on the Hadley Light ensures the bulbs will never overheat and that the color emitted will stay consistent for the life of the light. What exactly is the life of the light?  It’s estimated they’ll last as long as 50,000 hours, or roughly 6 years of around the clock use.  If you favor a more conventional light bulb option, the Hinkley Hadley is available in a standard light bulb configuration as well, while the entire Hadley range is available in numerous sizes and finish options, all while maintaining the same overall style.

In the end, I was finally able to find the perfect light for my son’s room, and I owe it Bellacor.  They were truly a pleasure to work with, and they were the first online lighting store able to make my lighting search an enjoyable one.

View the photo gallery below for a look at the Hinkley Hadley Chrome Three Light Flush Mount in my remodel, then head over to Bellacor to view their collection of nearly 3,000 Hinkley lights.  Alternatively, you can head straight to the Hinkley Hadley Three Light Flush Mount product page to see the specific Hadley light I chose.

4Moms Origami Stroller – Most Technologically Advanced Stroller

If you're looking for the most technologically advanced stroller perfectly suited to your busy city lifestyle, the 4Moms Origami is without question the stroller that needs to be at the top of your list

In a world where technology is a part of our everyday lives from the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, it only makes sense that a stroller company adapted that technology to create the most advanced stroller ever built.  That company is 4Moms, and their Orgiami Stroller is packed full of the latest tech gadgetry, starting with a self charging battery that charges as you push.

“Why do you need a rechargeable battery on your stroller?” you ask.  For starters, it powers the daytime running and pathway lights on the stroller, ensuring no matter what time of day, your stroller and baby can be seen, while also giving you a better view of your path.  Even more impressively, the battery charges your cell phone or mobile device, so you don’t find yourself in the middle of a walk or shopping trip with no where to plug in. But the lights and integrated cell phone charger are just the begining of the 4Moms Origami’s brilliant features.

4Moms Origami Stroller, front

Anyone that’s ever used a stroller knows the biggest hassle of using one is the process of folding and unfolding it.  To open and to collapse the 4Moms Origami, it’s truly as simple as pushing a button. No locking or unlocking parts with your feet, no twisting handles at the same time as you turn – the power fold and unfold takes away any guesswork on whether you have the stroller set up right or collapsed fully, all with the push of a button.  It’s not only brilliant, it works flawlessly, and eliminates one of the biggest nuisances when using a stroller.  The Origami also folds in three dimensions, which means once folded, it notes a much smaller footprint than other similarly sized strollers.  This is a huge plus for anyone tight on space either in their home or vehicle.

It’s important to note that when designing this function, 4Moms didn’t overlook the fact that sometimes, as parents, we can be slightly absentminded.  And for those of us that find themselves having a forgetful day, there is an alert that reminds us if the baby is still in the stroller.  In the event you ignore the alert, the Origami will simply override your request and not fold itself, thus ensuring the safety of your child.

4Moms Origami Stroller, rear

From there, the fun gadgets continue, as the 4Moms Origami’s high tech design includes an LED screen that is incorporated into the handlebars. Displayed on your stroller screen is the time, outside temperature, steps you’ve taken and how far you’ve traveled – making workout tracking simple and automatic.  The LED screen is also where you’ll see the baby display that reminds you that despite your content and quiet baby, they’re still in there, safe and sound.

As for what ages the Origami is suited for, it comes set up for infants 6 months and up, but prior to that, there are two options. Because I regularly take walks around the neighborhood with a younger baby, I use the Origami Bassinet. It clicks in easily into the base and can be used from newborn up to 6 months. It’s fitted with an oversized sunshade for protection from the sun during any time of day along with an easy carry handle, foot muff and super soft cushion liner. If you often find yourself in and out of the car, there’s also a car seat adapter that works with most Graco car seats.  Once they’ve graduated from the bassinet, the Origami notes a super comfy seat in your choice of five fun colors, with a fabric that’s both comfortable and easy to clean.

4Moms Origami Stroller with bassinet, side

Beyond its technology, I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the 4Moms Origami’s overall design. The stroller has 6″ wheels up front and 9″ wheels in the back with all wheel suspension, making city use a pleasure thanks to its comfortable ride.  The split design of the rear wheels with high hanging storage prevents you from kicking the stroller during fast-paced walks.  And unless you find yourself on a shopping spree, there is plenty of storage for everything you need, with cup holders, storage pockets and the removable hanging storage bag all providing ample space to store your children’s and your personal items.

When deciding on the perfect stroller for your family, it’s important to find a stroller that suits you.  And if you’re looking for the most technologically advanced stroller perfectly suited to your busy city lifestyle, the 4Moms Origami is without question the stroller that needs to be at the top of your list.

BABYBJÖRN Baby Gear

In addition to their baby carriers, BABYBJÖRN is a leader at offering innovative, functional baby gear for every room in your house

With Father’s Day taking place this past weekend, it got me thinking about what  products make my life a little easier as a dad, and what things I would recommend to those of you about to undertake fatherhood for yourself (of course, the same recommendations apply to moms as well).  Looking around my own home, it didn’t take long to see there’s a brand that prominently holds a place in nearly every room of my house, and that company is BABYBJÖRN.

Best known for their incredibly functional child carriers, BABYBJÖRN makes a fantastic range of children’s products, all of which apply a remarkable level of innovation to things that at first glance may seem like straightforward items. Bouncers, bibs, plates, spoons – I own BABYBJÖRN and non-BABYBJÖRN versions of each, and let me say immediately that I wish I had opted for the BABYBJÖRN variants from the beginning.  They’re just so much better than the non-BABYBJÖRN counterparts, they’ve basically obsoleted them in my house.

If you’re a parent of a young child, here’s a list of the BABYBJÖRN products I use and my experiences with each.  Hopefully it will help make your decision a little easier as you hunt for the best baby gear for yourself.

BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy

In recommending BABYBJÖRN, it’s only fitting to start with their child carriers.  For parents of newborns, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is the single best way to transport your newborn, especially for those of you with a more active lifestyle.  Speaking from personal experience, my wife and I both do as much as possible outdoors, and the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy allowed us to get outside almost immediately following the birth of our daughter.  Walks, trips to the park with our son, errands – we use the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy pretty much every day for different tasks.

Helping make the BABYBJÖRN so great, the Baby Carrier Synergy builds on the company’s tradition of innovative front carriers, offering an incredible amount of features aimed at ensuring both you and your child’s comfort.  From an operator standpoint, carrying your child in the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is incredibly comfortable, thanks to a lumbar support system for your lower back mated to padded, easily adjustable shoulder straps.  It’s a system that does a fantastic job distributing weight evenly across your back and shoulders, and as a result, makes it easy to carry your child hands free for extended periods of time in complete comfort.  Helping keep you and your child cool during higher temperatures, the Baby Carrier Synergy is constructed from smooth, breathable 3D mesh fabric.  Not only does it do a fantastic job wicking away heat and moisture, it’s also non-toxic, meaning it won’t irritate your baby’s skin (and it’s safe to chew on during the teething phase).  Lastly, the Synergy’s unique two piece design makes it easy to get your child in and out of the carrier by yourself.

As for your baby, they benefit from the same fantastic level of comfort you do.  The BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy features an ergonomic, physiologically correct design that supports your child’s head, back and hips in a natural crouching position.  For younger children, the position faces inward, towards you, and as your child grows and develops the ability to hold up their head, they can then face outward to view their surroundings while on the move.  Thanks to its two-piece design, should your child fall asleep while in the BABYBJÖRN, you can easily lay your baby down without waking him or her up.  I can’t tell you how many times we’ve resorted to a walk around the neighborhood to soothe our less-than-happy daughter, and the Synergy magically calms her and puts her to sleep.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy include:

  • Breathable and cool fabric in three colors
The airy, breathable 3D mesh wicks moisture and heat away from you and your baby. The mesh on the inside of the baby carrier is especially soft and feels comfortable against your child’s skin, while gently shaping itself to his or her body.  Available in black, marine blue and white.
  • Provides back stability
The enhanced lumbar support is individually adjusted and provides comfortable back stability. The back support and the wide shoulder straps work together to provide maximum carrying comfort and relieve pressure.
  • Ergonomic for your child
The baby carrier has an ergonomic design that provides the proper support for your child’s head, back and hips from birth.  The head support is adjustable and can be folded down so that the child may be carried facing forward when he or she is a bit older and able to hold up his or her own head.
  • Adjusts to your baby
Fits babies from 8 pounds and 21 inches up to 26 pounds.

If you’re looking for the perfect child carrier for you newborn or young child, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy is it.  It’s cool, incredibly comfortable for you and your child, and it allows you to get outside and active almost immediately after having a baby.  Of all the baby gear I own, the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy may very well be at the top of my must-have baby item list.  You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy from Amazon.com for $113 – $116 (depending on color choice).

BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier

Having two young children, my wife and I actually own two baby carriers:  the previously discussed BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Synergy, and the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier.  Whereas the Synergy is perfect for our younger, smaller daughter, the Comfort Carrier is geared towards larger, slightly older children (more specifically, babies weighing 13 pounds up to toddlers weighing 31 pounds).  We actually used the Synergy for our son first, and upgraded him to the Comfort Carrier after our daughter’s arrival.  The transition has worked perfectly.

One of the key differences between the two is the addition of a hip belt on the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier, which helps distribute heavier loads to your hips from your back and shoulders.  My son weighs about 29 pounds, and the Comfort Carrier does a fantastic job spreading his weight downward, thanks to the hip belt.  Ideally, the more weight you can transfer to your hips the better, as your lower half is capable of handling weight significantly better than your top half.

From a construction standpoint, the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier is made from certified 100% organically grown cotton fabric – a material that’s not only comfortable, it’s safe for your baby’s skin and mouth (should they be teething).  As with other BABYBJÖRN carriers, your child can face either towards you or away from you, but since it’s geared towards slightly older babies, most will probably prefer facing outward, to enjoy their surroundings.  Should your child wish to face in, however, a new wide position for your baby’s legs allows you to adjust the Comfort Carrier accordingly.

Having used the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier on more walks and hikes than I count, I can tell you the Comfort Carrier lives up to its billing.  It’s extremely comfortable to use on longer hikes, and the hip belt is a welcome addition, beautifully transferring the weight onto your hips, where you want it.  As for my son, he adores it.  He loved his original Synergy, and there’s no question he loves to explore even more in the Comfort Carrier.  It’s a fantastic addition to the BABYBJÖRN lineup, and it’s the perfect baby carrier for slightly larger, older babies.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier include:

  • Maximum carrying comfort
Provides optimum weight distribution and lightens your load, thanks to the adjustable waist belt and shoulder straps. Most of the weight is transferred to your hips, so you can carry your little one for longer periods without wearing out your back.
  • For children up to 2 years
You can use this baby carrier from when your child weighs 13 lbs/6 kg (around 3 months) until he or she weighs at most 31 lbs/14 kg (around 2 years).
  • Flexible leg positions
For enhanced comfort, your child’s leg position can be varied from normal to wide. As with all our baby carriers, you can choose whether you want to carry your child facing you or facing forward.

You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier from Amazon.com for $138.

BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air

Baby bouncers are funny things.  I own a total of four, three of which were received as gifts, and the last of which (the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air) the lone bouncer I’ve actually purchased.  With the first three, my children absolutely hated them, so much so that I genuinely didn’t understand why anyone would use a baby bouncer.  But after my wife’s insistence to try the BABYBJÖRN, I gave bouncers a final chance to prove their worth, and the Babysitter Balance Air has demonstrated itself as a far superior version to any other bouncers I’ve encountered.

First and foremost, the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air’s bouncing motion is perfect.  It takes only a touch to create a fluid, gentle bouncing motion that your child will absolutely adore.  At dinner, for example, we had our newborn daughter on the floor situated in the Babysitter Balance Air, and we can use literally one toe to keep her gently bouncing throughout dinner (while she lays there, perfectly content).  And because it’s so easy to create the fluid rocking motion, as your child learns to control her movements, they also gain the ability to sooth themselves in the BABYBJÖRN through their own bouncing.

Now that temperatures are warming up, we’ve also had our daughter outside in the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air, and it works just as well as outside as it does in.  Constructed from an airy, breathable mesh (hence the name Babysitter Balance Air), the BABYBJÖRN is fantastic at making sure your child doesn’t overheat thanks to its excellent air flow and moisture eliminating properties, and it’s durable enough to stay looking like new after numerous washes.  Another great feature for outside use is the Babysitter’s three positions (play, rest and sleep), giving your child ability to see what’s around them while awake but easily adjusting when they want to take a rest.

More features of the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air include:

  • Airy and pleasant mesh fabric available in seven colors
The airy, breathable mesh wicks away moisture and heat. It is easy to keep clean and dries quickly after washing.
  • Develops motor skills and balance
The calm and natural rocking from the BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air refines your child’s motor skills and balance. The bouncer is recommended by pediatricians.
  • Fun for your child
The child’s own movements make the bouncer rock. No batteries are needed. Your child sets the pace, so the experience is fun and soothing at the same time.
  • Three positions plus transport mode
The BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air has three positions: play, rest and sleep. It can also be folded into a compact transport mode, making it easy to pack or store when not in use.

Putting it simply, if you’re looking for a baby bouncer that actually works and one that your children will absolutely adore, this is it.  You can purchase your own BABYBJÖRN Babysitter Balance Air from Amazon.com $120 – $165, depending on color.

BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib

You might be wondering why I’m recommending a bib, as it seems like such a basic baby item, but the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib addresses the problem no other bib does:  dropped food.  Sure, bibs protect the upper portion of your children’s clothes, but as any parent known, eating with young kids mean a wealth of dropped food and spilled drinks.  So while your children’s clothes stay clean on top, the bottom fares significantly worse.

Ingeniously, the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib is constructed from a softer plastic that has a lip built into the bottom of it, catching food as it’s dropped and keeping it out of your child’s lap.  The lip even catches unexpected drink spills.  As a family that eats out on a regular basis, I can’t tell you how many changes of clothes the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib has saved.  It’s simple, but it’s brilliant.

More benefits of the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib include:

  • Easy to keep clean
The BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib is easily rinsed off under running water or cleaned in the dishwasher.
  • Well-conceived design
The neckband rests nicely and comfortably on the child’s neck. The bib’s size has been tailored to make sure that the spill pocket does not get stuck on the table’s edge. Food remains in the spill pocket no matter how active the baby. The bib also has a practical hole to hang it up by.
  • Can be used for a long time
Adjustable snap adapts size to fit your growing child perfectly.

You can purchase the BABYBJÖRN Soft Bib directly from Amazon.com for $11.

BABYBJÖRN Plate, Spoon and Cup

Last but not least, I couldn’t leave out the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup.  From the moment he was able to sit in his high chair, my son was determined to use a proper plate and utensils to eat his meals, so we began the daunting quest of trying to find eating tools that he could use.  Ultimately, the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup are by fare the best options we found, allowing him to eat things impossible with the other utensils we tried.

The BABYBJÖRN plate, for example, is larger than traditional baby plates, utilizing a three-leaf clover shape that sits firmly on the table, thanks to its rubber base and larger surface area.  Because of its size, it’s easy to serve your child multiple food options and keep them separated, and the high sidewalls work perfectly with the BABYBJÖRN spoon to help your child scoop up the food of their choosing.  Most importantly, however, is that unlike traditional plates and bowls that have tapered bases, the BABYBJÖRN plates’ wide base stays securely in place when your child bangs on the plate’s rim.  Before the BABYBJÖRN plate, nearly every meal ended with my son banging the edge of his bowl or plate and watching food sail across the room.  Thanks to the BABYBJÖRN, my son’s food catapulting days are over.

As for the BABYBJÖRN spoon, as already noted, it works in tandem with the high edge of the BABYBJÖRN plate to help scoop up food.  It also features a slightly larger design than other baby spoons with a deeper spoon area, allowing your child to scoop things impossible with other baby spoons.  The first example that comes to mind is peas.  My son loves peas, and the BABYBJÖRN plate and spoon are the only two things I’ve found that allow him to scoop peas with success.  He can scoop them easily, and they stay in place as he’s transferring to them to his mouth.

Lastly, my son loves drinking out of normal cup, and the BABYBJÖRN cup has been a fantastic aid at teaching him to drink without a lid.  It’s the perfect size for his smaller hands; it features a wider rubber base that does a fantastic job as resisting tipping, and it’s dishwasher/microwave/freezer safe.  It’s the perfect compliment the BABYBJÖRN plate and spoon.

Features of the BABYBJÖRN plate, spoon and cup include:

  • Well-conceived design
The three-leaf clover shape of the plate helps the child to scoop up food onto the spoon. The spoon is compatible with the plate’s shape and works using either the right or left hand. It has a short handle that is simple for small hands to grip.
  • Rests firmly on the table
The plate rests firmly on the table and will not tip even if the child bangs on the plate’s rim. The rubber base prevents it from sliding around.
  • Easy to clean
The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon are dishwasher-safe but can also be washed by hand. You may warm baby’s food on the plate in the microwave oven.

You can pick up the BABYBJÖRN plate from Amazon.com for $23 and the BABYBJÖRN cup from Amazon.com for $13.

Britax Chaperone and Advocate 70 CS Car Seats

The Britax Chaperone and Advocate 70 CS car seats provide the absolute highest level of safety for your kids while driving

As the parent of a two year old and as of this month, a newborn, there’s absolutely nothing that’s more important to me than my kids’ safety.  When driving, this translates directly to my vehicle and the car seats my kids are in.  With my first son, I spent hours researching brands and their corresponding safety and features for his car seat, and the brand that consistently rose to the forefront was Britax.

With my new daughter arriving, it was time for another round of car seat shopping, so I thought now was the perfect time to share my recommendations for those of you contemplating your own car seat purchase.  For my daughter, the choice was easy, as Britax currently offers a single infant car seat: the Britax Chaperone Infant Car Seat.  As for my son, I opted for the Britax Advocate 70 CS Convertible Car Seat, and I can say with complete sincerity that I’m completely confident both my kids are as safe as possible when they’re traveling.  If you’re in the market for either an infant or a convertible car seat, I’ll save you the trouble of conducting your own hours of research and get straight to the point:  if you want the best, buy one of the Britax.  It’s impossible to put a price on your kid’s safety, and you can’t get better than the Britax.

Britax Chaperone Infant Car Seat

There’s a host of reasons to opt for the Britax Chaperone Infant Car Seat, starting with the unsurpassed amount of safety built into it.  The Chaperone (and the Advocate 70 CS) both feature what Britax calls True Side Impact Protection – a safety technology exclusive to Britax.  Side impact crashes are especially dangerous for children, with 1 in 4 crashes occurring from the side, and 30 percent of fatalities the result of side impacts.  The major dangers of a side impact collision are the lack of crumple zone between the child and vehicle door, contact with intruding objects (glass, metal shards, etc.) during the collision, and the acceleration of the body followed by a sudden halt.

To address the inherent dangers of a side impact crash, the Britax True Side Impact Protection system features two key structural elements:  a rigid seat shell featuring deep sidewalls lined with energy-absorbing foam, and secondly, an adjustable head restraint that’s also lined with energy-absorbing foam.  With True Side Impact Protection, crash forces are distributed away from your child; your child is shielded from vehicle intrusion; your child’s head and body are contained in the seat; and your child’s head, neck and spine are all kept in alignment, limiting movement in the event of an impact.

In addition to their side impact technology, another feature exclusive to Britax is the addition of anti-rebound technology on all their rear facing car seats.  If you’ve ever seen a car seat crash test, following a front impact collision, car seats rebound back, with the top, unfixed portion of the car seat (around your child’s head) flipping up, and your child’s head potentially hitting the rear seat.  Similarly, in a rear end collision, the first tendency of the car seat is to flip up, with your child’s head again potentially striking the rear seat.  To combat this movement, Britax has incorporated an anti-rebound bar on the base of the Chaperone, which creates a solid, L-shape structure to combat this movement, minimizing rotational forces on the seat and keeping your child significantly more protected than in conventional car seats.

These are just two of the Chaperone’s great features – from here, the list is extensive.  I love the Chaperone’s quick adjust five-point harness, which allows you to adjust the shoulder height without disassembling the harness straps.  It also has a weight limit of 30-pounds, which lets you keep your child in the seat longer than most other brands.  From a comfort standpoint, I can’t speak for a newborn, but I will tell you that it looks incredibly comfortable, and my daughter sleeps exceptionally well in it.  There’s a layer of high density comfort foam to provide extra padding, the cover is built from a perfectly plush, high quality fabric, and there’s a foam insert that provides an extra secure fit for children weighing between 4 and 11 pounds.  And from an adjustment standpoint, getting your child perfectly secured (and unsecured) is exceptionally easy, thanks to built-in lock-offs which ensure a snug lap and shoulder belt installation as well as a front harness adjuster offering easy adjustment when loosening the harness system.  Other features include:

  • Energy-Absorbing Foam Liner (EPS) absorbs and distributes crash forces
  • Large multiple position canopy
  • Ergonomic Carry-Handle designed to contour to forearm to allow for more comfortable carrying of child in carrier
  • Premium Lower LATCH Connectors for a quick and simple installation featuring a push button for easy release
  • Easy-to-Read Level Indicators (on base) provide quick reference for proper angle of recline
  • Easy-to-Install Seat-to-Base Design self-guides carrier into proper locked position
  • Easy-to-Install Base with LATCH Connector Storage (Included)
  • Height Adjustment Knob (on base) for proper seat angle and positioning
  • Certified for Aircraft Travel
  • Stroller Compatible Design works with BRITAX B-READY, B-NIMBLE, B-SCENE strollers, using the integrated CLICK & GO adapter system, and CHAPERONE stroller to create a convenient travel system. Also compatible with other major stroller brands when used with BRITAX adapter strap (included).
  • MSRP (USD) $229.99

For more info detailing the Britax Chaperone, you can the complete details at the official Britax website.  You can also purchase the Britax Chaperone infant car seat at Amazon.com for $183.95, or if you’re thinking of purchasing a stroller as well, you can pick up the Britax B-Ready Stroller for $407.93 and get the Chaperone car seat for free.

Britax Advocate 70 CS Convertible Car Seat

While your choice for Britax infant car seats is limited to the Chaperone, your options for a Britax convertible car seat are a little more diverse, with Britax offering a range of 5 convertible seats.  As I noted at the beginning of the article, it’s impossible for me to put a price on my kids’ safety, so I made it easy and opted for the top of the line Britax Advocate 70 CS.  Reiterating the statistics in the Chaperone infant review, side impacts pose a substantial threat to children, with 1 in 4 accidents being of the side impact variety and 30 percent of fatalities coming from side impacts.

The Britax Advocate 70 CS offers an unparalleled level of protection against side impacts, thanks to its unique side impact cushion technology.  Simply put, energy-absorbing cushions on the exterior of the child seat divert crash forces away from your child, reducing side impact crash energy by 45%.  It’s the only technology that diverts crash forces before they reach your child, and it’s the only technology that extends the full length of the seat, protecting your child’s head, neck and torso.  In addition, the cushions also offer additional protection to other passengers, an especially important feature if you have more than one child in your vehicle.  The Advocate 70 CS is the only convertible car seat to offer side impact cushion technology.

In addition to its tremendous protection against side impacts, the Advocate 70 CS (along with the full range of Britax convertible car seats) feature industry-leading protection against head injuries, thanks to what Britax calls SafeCell technology.  With conventional car seats, children still have the potential to be propelled forward, to the point their head comes into contact with the seat in front of them.  With SafeCell, the car seat’s center of gravity is significantly lower than with other seats, and in the event of the crash, the base is designed to compress, limiting the seat’s movement.  In addition, Britax has incorporated integrated steel bars to their convertible car seat construction, strengthening the seat’s connection to the vehicle and reducing forward movement.

Mated to their SafeCell technology, another feature unique to Britax is what they call Versa-Tether, a system designed to further improve energy absorption.  During a crash, the tether that secures the car seat to your vehicle is released in stages, slowing forward momentum in steps and minimizing the seat’s forward rotation.  Together, these two technologies offer a significantly higher level of head protection than any other car seats, keeping your child secure and their head securely away from the front seats.  If this all sounds overly complex, Britax has a fantastic video that you can find on this page, highlighting all the aforementioned technologies and showcasing precisely how they work together.

If you still haven’t grown tired of reading about the the Advocate 70 CS list of features, I could quite literally go on all day describing them.  As with the Chaperone infant car seat, the Advocate 70 CS features the Britax True Side Impact Protection system, utilizing an energy-absorbing layer of EPP foam.  Your child’s head, neck and spine are kept in alignment, deep sidewalls protect from vehicle intrusion, and your child’s head, and body stay contained within the car seat, reducing the chance of injury.  When securing your child with the tangle-free five point harness system, the Click & Safe snug harness indicator gives an audible aid that provides added assurance your child is within the correct range of snugness.  And in terms of comfort, high density foam provides an extra layer of padding, while a plush, easily removable cover with comfort pads and an infant body pillow ensure your child is at least as comfortable as you are.  Speaking from experience, my son has spent tremendous lengths of time in his Advocate, including three 24-hour road trips, and he’s handled them all superbly, so there’s no question the Advocate 70 CS is a remarkably comfortable seat.  Other great features of the Britax Advocate 70 CS include:

  • Harness Ultra Guard System (HUGS™) provides resistance to forward movement in the event of a crash
  • 70-pound Weight Capacity for safety and comfort as your child grows
  • Rear and Forward Facing Recline for child comfort and positioning
  • High Density Comfort Foam provides an extra layer of padding to gently cushion your child
  • Plush, Easy-Remove Cover with matching comfort pads and infant body pillow to provide extra comfort and easy cleaning without disassembling or uninstalling the child seat
  • Two Buckle Positions for your growing child
  • Infant Positioning Insert may be necessary for small infants to achieve a snug fit of the harness around your child (sold separately)
  • Quick-Adjust, No-Rethread Harness repositions the harness shoulder height without disassembling the harness straps
  • Premium Lower LATCH Connectors for a quick and simple installation featuring a push button for easy release
  • Built-in Lock-Offs ensure a snug lap and shoulder belt installation with minimal effort

Conclusion

Ultimately, it’s as simple as this:  if you’re driving a Mercedes-Benz, you already know the importance of safety and engineering in a vehicle.  If you have kids, it’s only logical to extend this safety and engineering to your kids, and there’s no better way to do so than with Britax range of car seats.  They’re the world leader in car seat technology, and they’ve done an incredible job at identifying the risks to your child in the event of an accident and creating solutions to minimize these risks.  If you, like me, are seeking the absolute highest level of safety for your child, buy the Britax, and don’t look back.  I did, and I can say with one-hundred percent certainty that my kids’ are as safe, comfortable and protected as I can possibly make them.

Chariot X-Country CX Child Carrier

If you're looking for a stroller, the Chariot CX offers an unprecedented level of features geared towards your active lifestyle

As a new father, one of the challenges you’ll immediately be confronted with is the selection of baby gear.  There’s furniture; there’s clothes; there’s toys; an there’s a whole lot of other stuff that invariably your mate will want to select (especially during the nesting stage).  And while leaving the selection of these goods in her hands is highly recommended, one specific item you most definitely should play a part in purchasing is the child carrier, because let’s face it:  the last thing you want to be doing is pushing a pink polka-dotted stroller down the street.  Enter Chariot child carriers.  These aren’t your typical strollers –Chariot’s aren’t about the latest styles in fabric, they’re about function, and function they do.

As active runners, stroller selection came down to finding one that would allow my wife and I to maintain being active.  I ended up opting for the Chariot Cougar (my significant other felt the CX didn’t warrant the extra cost over the Cougar), but if I had my way I’d have opted for the CX simply because I liked some of its minor features.  Both the Chariot Cougar and CX are sold as a chassis (which is what’s pictured) and feature a modular add-on system, allowing the CX to traverse the most varied of terrains.  There’s a stroller option for everyday use (I have it but rarely use it), there’s a running attachment (which I use almost exclusively), there’s a hiking option (don’t have it), there’s a bike attachment  and there’s a ski option (both of which I’ll be adding).  For everyday use, you can swap between the stroller and running options in about 30 seconds with no tools, and you can fold it up equally as fast for easy transport.

But what makes the Chariot so great is when you’re actually using it, the Chariot is about as close to running without a stroller as you’re going to get.  It glides exceptionally well and is easily manageable with a single hand.  For the child, there’s a suspension system offering what I surmise to be a superbly plush ride.  It’s fully enclosed with side vent, and depending on the climate, various stages of the body shell can be pulled back, offering the ability to use it in a variety of climates.  I’ve used mine in temperatures ranging from 90 degrees to 30 degrees, and my son’s happily endured it all.

In the end, the Chariot has been one of the baby purchases that I’m most happy with.  If you’re currently in the market for a stroller, I can’t recommend it enough.  For more info on the Chariot, visit their website ChariotCarriers.com.
