The New 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Interior

The new C-Class already looks to be in motion at a standstill with its dynamic proportions

The dashboard is divided into an upper and a lower section: into a wing-like section with new, flattened round vents reminiscent of aircraft engine nacelles, and into an opulent expanse of trim. The latter flows from the centre console to the dashboard without interruption. Driver-focus adds to the sportiness: the dashboard and central display are slightly tilted towards the driver by six degrees.

The driver area features a high-resolution LCD screen. It is free-standing, and appears to float in front of the wing profile and the expanse of trim. This sets the driver display apart from traditional cockpits with classic round dials. Customers have a choice between a 10.25-inch (26.0 cm) or a 12.3-inch (31.2 cm) version.

The paradigm change to digitisation is also obvious in the central display: the vehicle functions can be controlled using the high-quality touchscreen. Its portrait orientation is particularly advantageous for navigation. The touchscreen likewise appears to float above the expanse of trim. Like the dashboard, the screen is slightly tilted towards the driver. The central display has a screen diagonal of 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) as standard. A larger version measuring 11.9 inches or 30.2 cm is optionally available.

A high-quality chrome insert divides the centre console into a rear, padded section for the armrest and a front section in lustrous jet black. The seemingly free-floating central display rises smoothly and seamlessly from this three-dimensional surface.

The modern, highly reduced design of door panels frames both ends of the dashboard. The door centre panel with integrated armrest evolves from a vertical surface into a horizontal orientation. Reflecting the design of the centre console, the front section takes the form of a metallic high-tech element. It can be used as a grab or closing handle, and houses the power window controls. Another highlight is the floating control cluster, into which the door opener and seat adjustment controls are integrated.

The special design of the optional AVANTGARDE or sport seats of the new C-Class uses layers and enveloping surfaces to create a visual impression of lightness. The head restraints are a completely new design and are attached to the backrest with a sealed piece of trim under which the adjustment mechanism is located.

A dashboard covered with man-made leather and featuring nappa-look beltlines is available for the C-Class (optional equipment, standard with AMG Line). The range of available trim showcases innovative surfaces. These include new interpretations of open-pored veneers in brown tones and a black, open-pored wood veneer featuring fine inlays of genuine aluminium that follow the dashboard’s contours.

The driver display and media display offer a holistic, aesthetic experience. The look of the screens can be individualised with three display styles (Discreet, Sporty, Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service). In “Sporty”, for example, the colour red is predominant and the central rev counter has a dynamic design. If any of the lines are selected, the new C-Class is equipped with ambient lighting featuring optical fibres as standard.

More driving pleasure also comes courtesy of the new, integral dynamic handling control system AMG DYNAMICS as well as AMG Traction Control (in the C 63 S), which serve to further differentiate the handling characteristics of the eight-cylinder models:

  • The C 63 and C 63 S both offer AMG DYNAMICS, a new feature of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs. This built-in dynamic handling control extends the functions of the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), allowing precisely measured torque distribution on the rear axle, which increases agility while maintaining a high level of stability. AMG DYNAMICS optimises lateral dynamics and maximises traction when cornering.
  • AMG Traction Control allows the driver to have an even more precise influence on the handling characteristics of the new C 63 S. It allows preselection of the slip on the rear axle in one of nine levels. To start with, the driver must switch off the ESP® using the separate button in the centre console (ESP® OFF position). Depending on the setting, the system permits more or less slip on the rear wheels ‑ very helpful in varying road conditions.

Visually, the looks of the new AMG C 63 are even more visually appealing: the AMG-specific radiator trim underscores the brand identity while emphasising the muscular appearance. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels.

Electrification continues: C 200 with EQ Boost

A new generation of four-cylinder petrol engines Is being launched in the new C-Class. At the same time the 1.5-litre versions in the C 200 and C 200 4MATIC have an additional 48 volt system with a belt-driven starter/alternator:

  • C 200: 135 kW/184 hp, 280 Nm; add. output of electric motor 10 kW, add. torque of electric motor 160 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 6.8-6.3 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 154-144 g/km)2
  • C 200 4MATIC: 135 kW/184 hp, 280 Nm; add. output of electric motor 10 kW, add. torque of electric motor 160 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 7.2-6.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 165-156 g/km)2

The combination of a 48 volt on-board network and EQ Boost creates the conditions for additional functions that help to reduce fuel consumption even further, while improving agility and comfort characteristics. When accelerating, EQ Boost can assist the 135 kW (184 hp) engine with an additional 10 kW (14 hp), bridging the brief moment until the turbocharger has built up its full charge pressure. This boosting is also used to reach the engine’s ideal rpm as quickly as possible during gearshifts. The shift time of the automatic transmission is shortened as a result. During deceleration, the starter/alternator recuperates kinetic energy and charges the battery. The water pump is electrically driven and actuated by a characteristic map. This optimally adapts the cooling output to the current need.

Other advantages include the gliding mode with the engine switched off, and the recuperative braking with intelligent engine stop when the vehicle is coasting. The start/stop system operates particularly comfortably thanks to the belt-driven starter/alternator, as the engine restarts almost silently, with low vibrations and very rapidly.

In-engine measures to reduce friction round off the efficiency strategy of the new four-cylinder power unit. These include the Mercedes-Benz patented CONICSHAPE® process, known in-house as conical honing: When form-honing the cylinder walls, the cylinder wall is opened out slightly towards the bottom, so as to reduce friction at the piston skirt for lower wear and fuel consumption. Alongside the diesel engines, all the petrol engines are also equipped with a particulate filter in Europe.

The two-litre variant of this engine in the C 300 is likewise new:

  • C 300: 190 kW/258 hp, 370 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 7.1-6.9 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 163-157 g/km)2

Basic petrol models (initially with 9G-TRONIC):

  • C 160 (only Saloon and Estate): 95 kW/129 hp, 210 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 6.8-6.6 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 155-150 g/km)2
  • C 180: 115 kW/156 hp, 250 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 6.8-6.5 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 155-149 g/km)2

The top Mercedes-Benz engine variant is the C 400 4MATIC:

  • C 400 4MATIC: 245 kW/333 hp, 480 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 8.7-8.1 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 198-186 g/km)2

State-of-the-art diesel: C 180 d, C 200 d and C 220 d

The new 1.6-litre variant of the current diesel engine family is celebrating its world premiere in the C-Class. In the OM 654 D16, both the bore and stroke (78 x 83.6 mm) are reduced compared to the two-litre version, the OM 654 D20 (82 x 92.3 mm). The main focus of the development work was on further reduction of friction losses. Like their larger brother, the C 220 d, the C 180 d and C 200 d enter new dimensions in efficiency.

  • C 180 d with 9G-TRONIC: 90 kW/122 hp, 300 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 4.7-4.6 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 124-122 g/km)2
  • C 200 d with 6-speed manual transmission: 118 kW/160 hp, 360 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 4.7-4.5 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 124-118 g/km)2
  • C 200 d with 9G-TRONIC: 110 kW/150 hp, 360 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 5.0-4.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 132-126 g/km)2
  • C 220 d: 143 kW/194 hp, 400 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 5.1-4.8 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 136-126 g/km)²
  • C 220 d 4MATIC: 143 kW/194 hp, 400 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 5.5-5.3 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 144-139 g/km)²

Both variants of the OM 654 employ the Mercedes-Benz stepped-bowl combustion process – named after the shape of the combustion bowl in the piston. The innovations also include the combination of an aluminium engine block and steel pistons, as well as the further-improved NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder walls.

Alongside optimised airflow on the intake and exhaust sides and the use of fourth-generation common-rail injection with pressures up to 2050 bar, the outstanding power delivery is due to a reduction in internal friction by around 25 percent. On top of this, the engine is also more compact than its predecessor. All components relevant for emissions reduction are installed directly on the engine. Thanks to the near-engine configuration, the exhaust aftertreatment system quickly reaches its operating temperature after cold-starting, and has a low heat loss and therefore excellent operating conditions.

Mercedes-AMG: More performance for the C 43 4MATIC

The V6 biturbo engine of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC excels with a powerful output together with low consumption and emissions. Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. For the new C-Class, the AMG development engineers have increased the output of the 3.0-litre V6 engine by 17 kW (23 hp) to 287 kW (390 hp). The peak torque of 520 Nm is available from 2500 to 5000 rpm.

  • C 43 4MATIC: 287 kW/390 hp, 520 Nm; (combined fuel consumption 9.8-9.3 l/100 km, combined CO2emissions 223-213 g/km)²

This package allows impressive performance figures: the new C 43 4MATIC Saloon accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the Estate in 4.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The engine is combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which the Mercedes-AMG developers have specially configured for a dynamic driving experience. This has a model-specific software application to achieve very short shift times.

4MATIC all-wheel drive: Traction even in difficult road conditions

The C 200, C 220 d and C 400 are available with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive for improved traction and driving stability, especially in adverse road conditions. The 4MATIC has an active all-wheel torque distribution of 45 % to the front and 55 % to the rear. As ever, the combination of the ESP® driving dynamics control system with the 4ETS electronic traction system makes regular differential locks superfluous. This saves weight and noticeably improves handling safety as well as ride comfort.

The all-wheel drive is standard equipment for the Mercedes-AMG C 43, and features rear-biased torque distribution with a front/rear axle split of 31 to 69 percent.

The exterior: headlamps with new interior design

The new-look C-Class combines emotionality with intelligence. The vehicle’s appearance is defined in particular by its front and the design of the headlamps and tail lights.

With the model facelift, both the Saloon and Estate feature the diamond grille as standard in combination with AMG Line. The front bumpers have been redesigned for all lines. These new designs render the EXCLUSIVE exterior of the Saloon and Estate even more expressive, and lend the AVANTGARDE exterior a yet more dynamic character. The front bumper features either a silver trim strip (standard), a chrome-plated trim strip (in combination with AVANTGARDE exterior) or a three-part chrome trim strip (EXCLUSIVE exterior). In conjunction with AMG Exterior, the vehicle sports an AMG front apron with a new geometry and at the rear the insert in diffuser-look comes in a new design. The rear bumper of these models has a new lower section; geometry, trim and tailpipe trim vary according to the selected equipment and engine variant.

The design of the front and rear lamps is defined by clear-lined contours. Exquisitely crafted details add highlights and underscore the modern character. The C-Class (Saloon and Estate) comes with halogen headlamps incorporating LED daytime running lamps as standard. LED High Performance headlamps featuring a particularly striking interior design are optionally available (standard for Cabriolet and Coupé). For the first time in this model series, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with ULTRA RANGE high beam are additionally available (see below for details).

Interior design: exquisite fine-tuning

The sporty interior exudes class, featuring flowing forms in a new interpretation of modern luxury.

The centre console is characterised by an elegant flowing trim element – optionally with new materials: open-pore brown walnut or open-pore anthracite oak. The 3D real wood veneer in the centre console combines a hand-crafted character with a modern feel. Newly available interior colours include magma grey/black, plus saddle brown for the AMG Line interior. A change of colour also applies to the option of seat belts in a special colour, which now come in magma grey instead of crystal grey.

The KEYLESS-GO starting function is standard. The start/stop button comes in a new turbine-look design. The vehicle key also features a new design.

The Multicontour Seat package for the Saloon and Estate is new. With this package, the side bolsters and lumbar support can be individually adjusted by means of an electrically driven pneumatic pump. A massage effect in the lumbar area is provided by air chambers which are inflated and deflated in a pulsing or wave-like motion when the function is activated.

Intelligent Drive: State-of-the-art active safety

The new C-Class features the latest Mercedes-Benz driving assistance systems offering the driver cooperative support, and therefore provides a higher level of active safety than its predecessor. The C-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously in even more situations.

The C-Class also uses map and navigation data for assistance functions. For example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as part of the Driving Assistance package is able to support the driver in numerous route-specific situations, and predictively adjust the speed e.g. when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. Other new developments include intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist as new functions of Active Steering Assist.

The new C-Class comes with extended Active Brake Assist as standard. Depending on the situation, this can help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slow-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or prevent them altogether.

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps: Optimum visibility in all conditions

The optionally available MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are new to the C-Class. New functions in comparison to the previously available LED Intelligent Light System are junction light, roundabout light, city light and bad-weather light.

In high-beam mode, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus enables continuous long-range illumination of the road ahead without dazzling oncoming traffic. When no other road user is detected, the road ahead is straight and the vehicle speed is above 40 km/h, ULTRA RANGE high beam is switched on automatically. When there are oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, the LEDs of the main beam modules are partially switched off, masking out a U-shaped area of the light beam.

The display concept: fully digital instrument display available as an option

The C-Class has a new display concept which includes an optional, fully-digital instrument cluster with the three visually distinguishable styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”.

The screen options at a glance:

Instrument cluster: The basic model features a classic two-tube instrument cluster. Between the tubes there is a 5.5-inch colour display (resolution: 383 x 600 pixels). The display style here is “Classic”.

The fully digital instrument display is available as an option. The screen has a 12.3-inch diagonal and offers high resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels. The cutting-edge screen design offers the three very different display styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”.

-Media display: The multimedia screen above the centre console is also available in two sizes. In combination with Audio 20 it has a 7-inch screen diagonal and a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. Here too, the display style is “Classic”. On request, in conjunction with Audio 20, a high-resolution media display with a 10.25-inch screen diagonal and a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels is available for the first time.

The C-Class has touch-sensitive controls in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with controls directly on the steering wheel is another new feature. The infotainment system can additionally be operated via the touchpad with controller (new: haptic feedback) in the centre console or by means of LINGUATRONIC voice control. The optional head-up display is now adjustable over an even wider range.

ENERGIZING comfort control: for enhanced well-being

ENERGIZING comfort control (optional) links various comfort systems in the vehicle. It systematically uses the functions of the air conditioning system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation) as well as lighting and musical moods, and allows a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. This has positive effects on well-being and driver performance. Depending on the equipment level, up to six programmes are available (Freshness, Vitality, Warmth, Cosiness, Joy, Training). The programmes all run for ten minutes. They are visualised on the media display with colour graphics, and backed by suitable music.

The multimedia systems: Tailor-made information and music offerings

The C-Class comes as standard with the Audio 20 multimedia system featuring two USB ports, an SD card reader, Bluetooth® connection and media interface. The latest-generation COMAND Online available as optional equipment offers fast 3D hard-disc navigation with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. Extensive additional information is displayed on the navigation map. With the Concierge service (available by subscription), Mercedes me connect customers have a host of individual services at their disposal.

Anti-theft alarm system: Also recognises parking damage and sends a message

Another new feature is the automatic notification if the vehicle suffers an impact caused by another vehicle when parked, is towed away or there is a break-in attempt. The highly sensitive sensors of the optional “Anti-theft alarm system (ATA)” can detect such situations and immediately send a “push notification” message to the Mercedes me App. The optional feature includes the new sensors and the corresponding software.

Sporty and distinctive: the exterior design

The exterior of the C 43 4MATIC Coupe and Cabriolet is considerably more expressive, even more strongly identifying the new models as members of the family. New distinguishing features include the AMG radiator grille with twin louvre in matt iridium silver and the powerfully sculpted front apron with additional flics. The side air curtains in the front apron help with optimum guidance of the front airstream. The attachment on the cross fins plus the trim element on the front splitter are finished in silver chrome.

When viewed from the side, eye-catching features include the sporty side skirts plus new, aerodynamically optimised AMG light-alloy wheels. Their specifically designed outer aero rings and spoke geometry which has been optimised in the wind tunnel help to improve air flow around the wheels and thus increase aerodynamic efficiency. As part of this the developers aimed for the optimum combination of aerodynamics, weight and brake cooling, together with maximum performance and reduced fuel consumption.

The rear view also conveys a sense of sporty aesthetics with two round twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome. The rear apron with side air outlet look and the significantly more expressive diffuser improve the air flow at the rear. The spoiler lip on the boot lid is painted in the vehicle colour.

The optional AMG styling package creates highlights which are even sportier: the more expressive front splitter, standard-fit spoiler lip, broader side skirt inserts and flics in the rear bumper are finished in high-gloss black. The further equipment options include the Carbon Fibre package II, in which the exterior-mirror housings and the spoiler lip on the boot lid are finished in black sight carbon fibre. The Night package contains black elements such as the exterior-mirror housings, shoulderlines and window weatherstrips.

Sporty look with model-specific details: the interior design

Sporty materials such as leather, DINAMICA microfibre and aluminium in a high-quality finish continue the theme of the expressive exterior in the interior. The optional AMG Performance seats provide optimum lateral support when adopting a dynamic driving style, thanks to the special design of the seat side bolsters of the seat cushion and backrest. As an option in conjunction with leather upholstery, the seat side bolsters can be perfectly adjusted by means of built-in air cushions. The Performance seats additionally lend the interior an even more distinctive character with their racing look. They are heated and, in conjunction with leather upholstery, also climate-controlled in three stages. In the Cabriolet, they can also be optionally equipped with AIRSCARF neck-level heating.

The standard upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre in black with red topstitching underscores the dynamic driving character. Matching the seat design, the door centre panels and dashboard are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with red topstitching. Aluminium sports pedals with black studs, trim elements in black piano lacquer with light longitudinal-grain aluminium, the black roof liner and the red seat belts create further sporty highlights.

Comprehensive individualisation options

As an option there is a comprehensive choice of individualisation options. With regard to trim, the range includes trim in black open-pore ash wood/light longitudinal-grain aluminium, longitudinal-grain aluminium (doors)/black open-pore ash wood (centre console), high-gloss dark-brown lime, anthracite open-pore oak wood, open-pore walnut as well as AMG trim in light longitudinal-grain carbon fibre/aluminium and matt silver fibreglass/light longitudinal-grain aluminium.

In terms of upholstery, as an option there is leather in black, black with red topstitching, cranberry red/black, magma grey/black, saddle brown/black and porcelain/black.

Interior with innovative display concept and operating system

Whether with touchpad and Controller, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel or via voice entry: the operating system of the C 43 4MATIC is just as versatile as it is flexible. All options are aimed at enabling the control tasks to be carried out as conveniently, quickly and appropriately to the situation as possible in this sporty environment.

Just as flexible is the display of the optional, fully digital instrument cluster with 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) screen diagonal, which brings the vehicle functions directly to life with the three AMG-specific display styles of “Classic”, “Sport” or “Supersport”.

A host of additional AMG information

Via the specific AMG menu, the driver is able to call up a host of additional information, such as Warm-up, Setup, G-Force, Race Timer or Engine Data, to make the driving experience even sportier. In addition, there is a digital indication of the current speed and selected gear. The manual transmission mode is identified by a yellow “M” and a prompt to shift up when reaching maximum engine speed, a touch inspired by the world of Formula 1. The visualisations in the central media display likewise enable further vehicle functions to be experienced even better, e.g. with animated presentation of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems.

New generation of AMG steering wheels

Extremely sporty design, a grippy shape with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation are the key attributes of the new AMG steering wheel in nappa leather, which comes as standard equipment. It has a flattened bottom section and is perforated in the grip area. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles support a sporty driving style with manual gear shifting. As an option it is also available in nappa leather / DINAMICA microfibre and also in nappa leather with trim in black piano lacquer.

The built-in Touch Control buttons are a new feature. These can be used to control the functions of the instrument cluster (left) and the multimedia system (right) by means of horizontal and vertical swiping movements of the finger. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and the cruise control are adjusted in the control panels on the left. The control panels on the right are used to activate the voice control and telephone, and to regulate the sound volume, music selection and other functions of the multimedia system.

Well-proven and powerful: the AMG 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine

The V6 biturbo engine boasts a high power output combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. The high power output comes courtesy of separate, larger turbochargers and 1.1 bar charge pressure, among other things. Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. The AMG power unit can be identified by the engine cover with red aluminium insert and AMG lettering.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission with shorter shift times

The C 43 4MATIC makes use of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which the Mercedes-AMG developers have tuned specifically for a dynamic driving experience. This has a model-specific software application to achieve very short shift times.

The multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in “Sport” and “Sport+” drive programs makes for an even more emotional driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gear shifts in the other modes. In all modes moving off occurs in first gear in order to always guarantee a dynamic driving experience.

“Manual” mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected drive program, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

Characteristics at the touch of a finger: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

With the proven DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual”, the characteristics of the C 43 4MATIC can be customised at the tap of a finger. The available range extends from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. This modifies key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. Independently of the DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, the driver has the option of pressing the “M” button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The suspension set-ups can also be selected specifically on demand.

The fifth mode “Slippery” is new, and is identified by means of the snowflake symbol. The moderate and even power delivery is specially programmed for slippery or snow-covered road conditions.

Rear-biased and agile: AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard-specification AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive features rear-biased torque distribution with a front/rear axle split of 31 to 69 percent. This configuration provides for enhanced driving dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road as well as improved traction when accelerating. The single-stage transfer case of the four-wheel drive system is flange-mounted to the transmission as a separate system.

This add-on solution makes it easier to modify the torque split for each particular model, thus allowing even more individual characteristics for the respective model series. Its compact design means that it does not entail any space restrictions for passengers or luggage.

With adaptive adjustable damping: AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension

With its adjustable, electronically controlled damping system, the AMG RIDE CONTROL steel suspension of the C 43 4MATIC provides both sporty driving dynamics and high comfort on long journeys. The basis for this is formed by the 4-link front axle and independent multilink rear suspension. The AMG-specific kinematics and elastokinematics with newly developed components result in very high camber stability when cornering at speed. The axial brake connection on the front axle supports the agile and precise handling.

The adaptive adjustable damping comes as standard. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The damping is adjusted individually for each wheel, and depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of a broad scope of information relating to acceleration or vehicle speed, for example. Via a switch on the centre console, the driver can select between three different sets of damper characteristics, namely “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”, and thus individually influence the driving experience — from highly comfortable to sporty.

Direct and with clear feedback: The AMG speed-sensitive steering

The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise, authentic feedback. The steering servo assistance is reduced at high speeds, and continuously increases at lower speeds. This means that comparatively little steering force is required at low speeds, and that the best possible control over the vehicle is maintained at high speeds. The steering servo assistance depends on the selected suspension setting. In “Sport” mode, more feedback is conveyed about the driving conditions.

Data logger for use on the racetrack: AMG TRACK PACE

As the virtual race engineer for recording data when driving on closed-off race tracks, AMG TRACK PACE provides a significantly extended and even more precise scope of functions. TRACK PACE can be ordered as an option for the COMAND Online infotainment system.

If this function is enabled, over 80 vehicle-specific sets of data (e.g. speed, acceleration) are recorded ten times per second. On top of this there are displays of lap and sector times and also the respective difference for a reference time. Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether he/she is currently faster or slower than the best time.

The data make it possible to analyse and improve the driver’s skills. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved. Thanks to a new developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit is departed from or shortened. Alongside GPS data, the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds) are used.

The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the head-up display. Known racetracks, for example the Nürburgring, are already stored. Furthermore, it is also possible to record one’s own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online.

A suitable iPhone® app can also be connected via WLAN. Customers can use it to share their experiences and data from the racetrack with other AMG drivers via Facebook, YouTube or the AMG Private Lounge.

Wellness on long-distance journeys: ENERGIZING comfort control

The optional ENERGIZING comfort control is also available for the new C 43 4MATIC. It networks together the various comfort systems in the vehicle and uses specific functions of the air conditioning and seats (heating, ventilation) plus lighting and music moods. Depending on the mood or requirement of the driver, it generates a special wellness set-up to enhance well-being and performance.

Mercedes Benz C-Class vs 2016 BMW 3-Series

The 2016 Mercedes Benz C-Class is above the competition thanks to it being a luxurious vehicle

The Mercedes Benz C-Class is known to set the benchmark when it comes to luxury sedans. It offers up great styling, along with it being affordable and it’s functional too. The BMW 3-Series is just as popular and it offers all of the above, so which choice is the best for you?

The 2016 BMW 3-Series might not have the same horse power as the 2016 Mercedes Benz C-Class but it does offer performance that is great along with good acceleration. The C300 goes from standstill to 60 is only 6 seconds and the Mercedes AMG C63 takes just 3.9 seconds.

The 2016 Mercedes Benz C-Class is above the competition thanks to it being a luxurious vehicle and it offers up start and stop technology. It also offers seating that folds down in the back and these can be folded down individually.

The Mercedes Benz C-Class also offers wipers that are rain sensing and the seating is 14 way power seats. But which would you choose: the Mercedes or the 2016 BMW 3-Series?

The Mercedes Benz C-Class offers the 2 litre 4 cylinder engine which gives up 241 horses. You should be able to get around 24mpg in the city and on the highway around 31mpg. You can alternatively choose the V6 engine and this should give you about 21mpg when travelling around town or there is the 3 litre engine offering 29mpg.

The BMW 3 Series comes with the 2 litre engine and you should be able to get about 35mpg from it out on the highway and around 23mpg travelling in the city out of the 240 horse power engine.

Based on the fuel economy offered and the engine choices would you rather have the BMW 3 Series or would you be behind the wheel of the Mercedes Benz C-Class?

Mercedes Teases C-Class Cabriolet

This rendering, faithful to the real thing, gives a good glimpse of what customers can expect to see in showrooms later this year

It is an “open secret,” says Daimler on social media: There will be a convertible version of the Mercedes-Benz C-class. This rendering, faithful to the real thing, gives a good glimpse of what customers can expect to see in showrooms later this year.

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Teaser

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet Teaser

Mercedes also says that the C-class cabriolet is a four-seater (although the rear seat will be tight), and it will feature a fabric top.

The full list of engine choices have not been revealed yet, but we know that the range will be bookended by the C300 cabriolet with a 241-hp 2.0-liter four, and the Mercedes-AMG C63S Cabriolet with a 503-hp 4.0-liter V-8. In between, Daimler could offer an AMG C43 cabriolet with a 362-hp 3.0-liter V-6. Automatic transmissions are standard. Other markets, by the way, get a far more generous choice of powertrains, including diesels, and a manual transmission.

With a price point below that of its bigger brother, the C-class cabriolet could make life difficult for the current E-class cabriolet, which is still based on the last-generation C-class. A new version of the E-class convertible isn’t likely to appear until mid 2017 at the earliest.

There is no official confirmation, but judging from the timing of this social media unveiling, we expect the C-class cabriolet to be unveiled at the Geneva auto show in two weeks. Stay tuned.

Athletic and sporty, the vivid, sensual design of the new C-Class Coupe cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury

Athletic and sporty, the vivid, sensual design of the new C-Class Coupe cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury. At the same time, its interior raises elegance and style to a sporty level. Lightweight construction to reduce weight, excellent aerodynamics, and a dynamically configured chassis, with optional air suspension, form the basis for a high level of suspension comfort, low road noise and tire vibration, agile handling, and driving pleasure. New assistance systems provide safety of the very highest caliber. With its high-class appeal and generous interior, the new C- Class Coupe sets new standards in its segment. It arrives at U.S. dealers in Spring of 2016.

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

“Our new C-Class Coupe continues the philosophy of our exciting coupes. It combines thrilling design with agile sportiness and modern luxury. The C-Class Coupe therefore clearly pledges itself to stylish driving enjoyment,” states Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

As the sportiest variant of the C-Class, the Coupe displays its driving enjoyment-oriented character in an emotional and at the same time formally distinct design. A sportily striking front section featuring diamond radiator grille and long hood – the new Coupe is 2.4 inches (60mm) longer than its predecessor between the firewall and front axle alone gives way to a low greenhouse whose lines flow into a bold and powerful-looking rear end incorporating the Mercedes coupe genes. A high beltline and frameless doors with free-standing exterior mirrors underscore the sporty character.

Clean lines and sensually arranged surfaces structure the side sections into vivid light and shadow effects. One particular highlight is the long, drawn-out dropping line typical of a coupe. In contrast to the C-Class Sedan, the dropping line extends further past the rear wheel arch. To underscore the Coupe’s sporty disposition, the suspension is .6 inches (15mm) lower than that of the Sedan, making it a very sporty proposition when combined with the standard 18-inch wheels.

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Interior

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Interior

Interior: generous, dynamic, exquisite

The interior is likewise a statement of the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy and combines emotion with intelligence. Although it exudes athletic and youthful charm, it has grown in maturity. Driver and passengers enjoy an ambience that leans toward the interior of the C-Class Sedan, yet raises it to a new, sporty level. Flowing forms characterize the center console as well as the door and rear side paneling, which smoothly merge into one another to emphasize the coupe character. The individually designed trim elements underscore the sporty character of the interior. A seating system including integral sports seats designed specifically for the Coupe offers sporty comfort, while the standard automatic belt feeder offers additional convenience. The choice of materials and the finish have a hand-crafted feel with high-class appeal and deliver a new take on modern luxury: sportiness without compromising on comfort and exquisite style.

With a 3.1 inch (80mm) longer wheelbase, the C-Class Coupe is 3.7 inches (95 mm) longer and 1.6 inches (40 mm) wider. The increased vehicle volume above all creates more spaciousness for the driver and front passenger. There is more shoulder room, elbow room and headroom in all seats.

The unique interior of the new C-Class Coupe is emphasized by the special upholstery color combinations: saddle brown, porcelain and – in the Edition 1 – nut brown/black with turquoise topstitching.

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

Individual highlights

The C-Class Coupe features a wealth of equipment as standard, including LED headlights, PRE-SAFE®, KEYLESS START, Sport Suspension and a Panorama Sunroof. The Sport Appearance Package is available as an alternative to further underline the dynamism of the Coupe. It differs by virtue of exterior features such as special bumpers and sills featuring AMG bodystyling, a diamond radiator grille with pins in chrome and 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. Interior highlights of the Sport Package include exclusive touches such as a sports steering wheel with flattened bottom section and AMG sports pedals.

Suspension – sportily agile and comfortable

The suspension offers a high level of comfort with low road noise and tire vibration while ensuring agile driving dynamics – the basis for driving enjoyment.

A new 4-link front axle with wheel suspension decoupled from the spring strut plays a part in the agile handling characteristics. This enables sporty axle kinematics for plenty of grip and high lateral stability. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. Multi-link independent rear suspension with 5 links ensures excellent wheel location qualities and supreme straight- line stability.

A steel sport suspension with tauter springs and damping is standard, lowering the Coupe by .6 inches (15mm) compared to the Sedan.

Air suspension

The Coupe comes with the option of AIRMATIC air suspension on the front and rear axle. Its electronically controlled, continuously adjustable damping on the front and rear axle ensures outstanding road noise and tire vibration characteristics in every situation and gives the driver the option of selecting the desired driving style: sporty, comfortable or consumption-optimized. To this end, the driver can select one of five driving modes using the DYNAMIC SELECT Switch: “ECO”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +” and “Individual.” Selecting “Individual” allows the driver to customize the vehicle settings. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded.

Efficient and lively engine

The C300 Coupe comes equipped with a powerful and efficient 2.0L, four-cylinder gas engine delivering 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, providing sporty performance and enhanced driving pleasure.

Lighter, stiffer and stronger

Intelligent lightweight construction with a higher proportion of aluminum helps make the Coupe lighter than its predecessor. Light-alloy components include the fenders, hood and trunk lid. At the same time, the body is now much stiffer and stronger thanks to the use of high-strength materials, which has a positive effect on not only driving dynamics and noise levels but also crash safety. The Coupe therefore follows a Mercedes-Benz tradition in adhering to the most stringent of internal Mercedes-Benz safety requirements based on what happens in real-life accidents.

Safe semi-autonomous driving to reduce stress

There are several safety and assistance systems based on the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive concept to choose from. ATTENTION ASSIST with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness, is included as standard. Further standard equipment includes COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which features an acoustic warning for the driver at speeds above 4 mph and Adaptive Brake Assist to help avoid collisions by boosting the braking effect in line with the current situation. When danger of a collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles or, in the best-case scenario, even avoiding the collision altogether. At speeds of up to 31 mph the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles, and is thus able to help prevent rear-end collisions.

New assistance systems with substantially enhanced functions are optionally available, combining data from various sensor technologies such as radar sensors and a stereo camera as part of the Intelligent Drive concept to enhance comfort and safety:

  • DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist is an adaptive cruise control system that can adjust the speed of the vehicle in line with a slower-moving vehicle ahead in a speed range from 0 to 124 mph if required. Likewise available from 0 to 124 mph, steering intervention helps the driver stay in lane. And at speeds below 81 mph, for example in traffic jams or when driving bumper to bumper, the system can follow the vehicle ahead even where there are no or unclear lane markings, thus enabling the driver to safety and comfortably follow the flow of traffic.
  • As well as vehicles ahead and stationary vehicles, the BAS PLUS Brake Assist System can also detect crossing traffic and boost the braking force if the driver fails to apply the brakes sufficiently; in addition to slower-moving, stopping and stationary vehicles, the PRE-SAFE® Brake can even detect pedestrians and brake autonomously if the driver fails to react, thus preventing accidents up to 31 mph and mitigating the severity of collisions at speeds of up to 45 mph. In flowing traffic the PRE-SAFE® Brake provides assistance according to the same mode of operation throughout the speed range from 4 to 124 mph.
  • Enhanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also prevent the vehicle from unintentionally drifting out of lane by applying the brakes on one side when the lane markings are solid or broken and there is a risk of collision, e.g. as a result of vehicles overtaking at high speed, parallel traffic or even oncoming traffic.
  • PRE-SAFE® PLUS extends the Intelligent Drive functions to take account of imminent rear impacts. It warns the following traffic by activating the rear hazard warning lights at increased frequency and initiating preventive
  • PRE-SAFE® occupant protection measures such as the reversible belt tensioner immediately prior to the impact. If the vehicle is stationary, the brakes are locked to reduce the forward jolt, which reduces the forces acting on the occupants and the risk of secondary collisions.
Athletic and sporty, the vivid, sensual design of the new C-Class Coupe cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury

Athletic and sporty, the vivid, sensual design of the new C-Class Coupe cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury

Optional assistance systems also include:

  • Active Parking Assist, which enables semi-automated parking with active steering and brake intervention in both parallel and end-on parking spaces
  • A 360° camera which is able to show the vehicle and its surroundings from various perspectives, including a virtual bird’s-eye view, thus assisting with parking and maneuvering
  • Airbags for safety

In addition to 3-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt-force limitation for driver, front passenger and rear passengers, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants in an accident. These include:

  • Frontal protection systems: Adaptive front airbags for driver and front passenger, additionally with a kneebag on the driver’s side
  • Side protection systems: Thorax/pelvisbags for driver and front passenger plus front and rear windowbags, with rear sidebags available as an option
  • Climate control with satellite navigation

The air conditioning system in the new C-Class Coupe operates efficiently and ensures high air quality. As in the Sedan, it uses satellite navigation to detect tunnels. It therefore closes the air recirculation flap automatically when entering a tunnel and opens it again after exiting a tunnel.

Vibrant infotainment

A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the new C-Class Coupe, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The new C-Class is also equipped with the unique Frontbass system. Next Generation C-Class Sedan Confirmed for 2014 Detroit Auto Show

It's confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January

It has been confirmed that the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan, U.S. built, will debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January before going on sale in August 2014.

In 2015, the updated C-class sedan will be followed up by a redesigned coupe, the C-Class convertible is also scheduled to go on sale in 2015. The sedan, coupe and cabriolet will then be followed by diesel and hybrid models as well as an all-wheel drive option. Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon did not confirm when the diesel and hybrid models will arrive, but a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz said the hybrid will be debuting in 2015 as well.

Cannon confirmed to Automotive News that, because of low anticipated demand, the redesigned C-class station wagon will not be sold in the United States.

Also commented on by Cannon was that the redesigned C-class exterior will be changed significantly, based on the spy photos, it will have far crisper and sharper lines.

As for Mercedes-Benz adding crossover variants to the C-Class lineup, it’s not likely. Cannon stated that vehicles like the BMW 3-series GT is “an answer to product question that no one is asking for.”

The Tuscaloosa, Ala. Mercedes-Benz plant is currently being expanded in order to make room for production of the C-Class sedan for North America starting next year with a output of around 100,000 units annually.

Mercedes C-Class Coupe with Wide Body Kit by Mansory

The tuners at Mansory are know for unrestrained Mercedes-Benz Makeovers, so what can we make of their subdued C-Class Coupe

The maniacal tuners at Mansory are know for their unrestrained Mercedes-Benz Makeover, like there outrageously eccentric and 631-hp Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG back in March or there SLS AMG that took on the look of a Ferrari 599.

There latest project however has thrown us a curve ball with a subdued makeover of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.  Don’t get me wrong, I like what Mansory’s done this time around.  Because really, could you imagine a C250 in a full Carbon Fiber suit?

For the C-Class Coupe, Mansory added an updated front bumper with large air intakes filled with metal grilles, LED lights and just above that, a blacked out Mercedes-Benz emblem.  Maintaining a bit of what Mansory is known for is the carbon-fiber hood that ads a nice contrast to the bright white finish.

The rear is also given a touch of carbon on the trunk spoiler and again on surrounding the large exhaust pipes.

On the inside, a sport steering wheel mounted and a range of carbon-fiber goodies, like paddles.  The limited carbon fiber treatment continues inside with sports steering wheel and a few lightweight composite accent pieces. Black leather is found on seating surfaces and steering wheel, while white stitching provides some contrast.

The Wide Body package is pure show however, without any engine modifications, making it ideal for the  C180, C200, C250 or C350. Pricing has yet to be announced.  Looking for what Mansory can do for your C63 AMG, stay tuned.

Gary Paffett Lands on the Podium at the Lausitzring

Winner of the 2012 DTM season opener, Gary Paffett secures second place in second race of the season

After winning the DTM season opener last week, Gary Paffett, driver of the THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, managed to get on the podium again at the Lausitzring. Paffett came in a second behind Bruno Spengler of BMW who won the race in a time of 1:09:45.795. After the first two races of the season, Paffett leads the drivers’ standings with 43 points over Jamie Green, driver of the Mercedes AMG C-Coupé, who has 30 points. Team THOMAS SABO / Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG lead the team standings with Mercedes AMG in second place with 37 points. Mercedes-Benz also leads in the DTM manufacturer championship with 96 points to BMW’s 54 points and Audi’s 52 points.

Jamie Green, 2nd in the opening race of the season Hockenheim a week ago, came in 4th. Green posted a time of 1:19.025 minutes, the fastest lap of the race at the Lausitzring, the second time he’s done it at this track. In total, Mercedes has clocked eight out of thirteen fastest laps in DTM races at this track since 2001. It was also the 164th quickest lap for Mercedes-Benz since 1988.

In his 45th DTM race, Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) moved up the field from 16th place to P10 and so finished in the points. Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé) and David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) finished in P11 and P12. In his second DTM race, Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) came home in 16th place. Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) was 21st, Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) did not finish.

The start: Gary Paffett moves up one position at the start into P2. Jamie Green overtakes Mike Rockenfeller on the first turn and is fifth. Vietoris moves up the field four places from 18th on the grid.

Lap 8: Green goes by Edoardo Mortara (Audi) and is in fourth place.

Lap 11: Ralf Schumacher and Christian Vietoris overtake Adrien Tambay (Audi).

Lap 13: The pit stop window is now open. Roberto Merhi, Schumacher and Vietoris come in for their first mandatory stop.

Lap 15 : First set of fresh tyres for Paffett.

Lap 18: Mehri wins through against Tambay in the scrap for 19th position.

Lap 21: Green now leads the race from Bruno Spengler (BMW) and Paffett.

Lap 25: Second pit stop for Merhi.

Lap 26: Green still in the lead but comes in now to make his first pit stop.

Lap 28: Schumacher makes his second mandatory pit stop.

Lap 30: Vietoris overtakes Rockenfeller.

Lap 31: Schumacher goes by Rahel Frey (Audi). Paffett comes in for final mandatory pit stop.

Lap 33: Green in P2 turns into the pit lane.

Lap 36: Paffett four tenths down on Spengler in second place.

Lap 48: Robert Wickens coasts to a halt at the side of the track.

Final lap: After 52 laps and a total distance of 180.856 kilometers, Gary Paffett and Jamie Green are second and fourth. Ralf Schumacher is tenth.

Comments after the race:

Gary Paffett (THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Second:

“It’s such a pity. My THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé had enough speed to win again today. I was just a bit too far behind at the pit-stop. Having said that, my car was really quick and had a brilliant set-up, a tribute to the team. I was also so close to Bruno Spengler’s car that I was losing a bit of down force. However, I did give it my all and being second on the podium within the space of a week is a great result for us, especially after the win in the opening race.”

Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Fourth:

“My Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé was just terrific today. Augusto Farfus drove a fantastic race. I was behind him most of the time, but despite the great pace of my car, I couldn’t get past. Now the focus of my attention has to be on my home race at Brands Hatch where I’m hoping to get back on the podium again.”

Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 10th:

“Our C-Coupé was pretty quick today. The car performed flawlessly and the same applies to the strategy and the pit stops. This enabled us to progress from 16th to 10th place. If I can get a better grid position in the next race, I’ll hopefully not get stuck in traffic and be able to compete with the front runners.”

Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé), 11th:

“We were not quite as quick as at the season opener in Hockenheim. There was a lot of dirt on the track which cost us more than we expected. It’s a bit annoying that we just missed a points finish, but hopefully things will go better for us in two weeks time at Brands Hatch.”

David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 12th:

“I had to be careful at the start of the race not to collide with any other cars and make sure my car wasn’t damaged. I gave it my all and got the best possible result. I just couldn’t have managed any more than that.”

Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 16th:

“I think the race went well but I would have preferred to have been further up the field. I’m hoping that things will be better for me at Brands Hatch given a bit more preparation.”

Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 21st:

“I had a bit of a disappointing race. Straight after my first pit stop I realised that there was no way I could make any great progress in the race. I’ll just have to draw a line in the sand now and look to the future.”

Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), retired

“Unfortunately I skidded off the track on lap 48. However, I have made some progress despite this. I’ll now focus all my efforts on Brands Hatch and hopefully pick up my first DTM points there.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Both Gary and Jamie had the speed to secure P1, but at this track it is not enough to simply go faster to be able to overtake. Gary started the race from third place, a mere 0.043 seconds adrift of pole position. He immediately moved up one position as the race began but was subsequently unable to get past the rear of Spengler’s car, which he was then forced to follow for about 50 laps.

Congratulations to BMW and Bruno Spengler on their victory and many thanks to our team for their sterling work since the beginning of the season, which has enabled us to head all three championship standings – the drivers’, the team and manufacturers’ championships.

As in Hockenheim, our C-Coupé and our drivers were highly competitive and we want to make a concerted effort to build on that.”

Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series DTM Safety Car

The Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series Safety Car is driven by Jürgen Kastenholz & is intended to ensure maximum safety

It’s been announced that the new Mercedes AMG C-Class Coupe will be the Safety Car for the 2012 DTM season. The Mercedes C 63 AMG Coupe Black Series will provide all the necessary safety for the DTM series, the world’s most popular touring car series. With a maximum output of 380 kW (517 hp), this two-seater is the most powerful C-Class of all time. The German Touring Car Masters (DTM) gets underway at the Hockenheimring on 29 April 2012.

The Safety Car is deployed under the direction of the German Motorsport Association (DMSB), which is responsible for implementing safety measures, ensuring compliance with safety standards and discharging the attendant official sporting functions in accordance with the DTM rules. The C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series Safety Car driven by racing driver Jürgen Kastenholz (44) is intended to ensure maximum safety for racing drivers, spectators and track marshals in case of dangerous situations, such as extreme weather conditions, accidents or other incidents. In response to a radio message from the race organisers, the Safety Car enters the track and leads the DTM field around the circuit until normal racing can be resumed.

The most powerful C-Class of all time stands for spectacular design, technology transfer from the field of motorsport and driving dynamics of the very highest calibre. As such, the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series only required modification to a few points of detail for deployment as the DTM Safety Car. The most striking feature distinguishing it from the series production version is the aerodynamically optimised light bar on the roof. Energy-efficient, fast-response LEDs in green and orange keep the DTM racing drivers informed of the current situation.

Green: the two central green lights on the front and rear are always active when the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series enters the field at the beginning of a Safety Car phase. Continuous green is the signal for all DTM drivers to overtake the Safety Car.

  • Orange: as soon as the Safety Car is in position in front of all DTM vehicles, the green LEDs are switched off and the orange LEDs are activated. The flashing orange lights at the outer ends of the light bar indicate that overtaking is absolutely prohibited.
  • The stroboscope-like flashing LED lights on the front and rear remain active throughout the Safety Car phase. The license plate with Safety Car lettering which is illuminated by LEDs on the boot lid provides for better visibility in poor weather.

Engine, power transmission, chassis, suspension and brake system corresponding to series production variant

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine corresponds to the series-production engine: with a maximum output of 380 kW (517 hp) and maximum torque of 620 Newton metres it even tops the roughly 377 kW (500 hp) V8 engine in the Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé which is being used in the DTM. The high-speed naturally aspirated engine enables acceleration to 100 km/h from a standing start in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 300 km/h (electronically limited). With the spectators at the race track and the TV audience in mind, the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series Safety Car is fitted with a modified AMG sports exhaust system. The special rear silencer guarantees a distinctive AMG V8 sound.

Engine cooling, power transmission, chassis and suspension, brake system – these areas have been honed to perfection and did not require any modification. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with four drive programmes, double-declutching function and RACE START guarantees direct and fast gear-shifting. As is customary in motorsport and typical for a Black Series model, the AMG sports suspension is designed as a coil-over suspension. It covers a broad range of adjustment options for an individual race track set-up. The standard-fit AMG rear-axle differential lock with locking effect in acceleration and deceleration mode combines with the 3-stage ESP® for reliable traction. The AMG high-performance braking system featuring motorsport-tested compound brake disks at the front offers extremely short stopping distances and fade-resistant deceleration performance.

Optional equipment from the AMG Performance Studio

The C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series DTM Safety Car is equipped with the AMG Track package, the AMG Aerodynamics package, the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package and forged AMG light-alloy wheels. The AMG Track package comprises active rear axle gear cooling and sports tyres. The radiator is positioned in front of the diffuser insert in the rear apron, where it effectively takes in the air stream. The specially developed Dunlop Sport Maxx Race sports tyres in size 255/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear are fitted on forged AMG wheels which are painted matt black with a high-sheen rim flange.

The AMG Aerodynamics package includes so-called flics and a functionally designed genuine carbon-fibre front splitter on the front apron, plus a fixed carbon-fibre rear aerofoil with adjustable blade. All three components provide the vehicle with a sharper profile while optimising its aerodynamic balance. The AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package covers exterior mirror housings, the inserts in the side sill panels and a diffuser insert in genuine carbon fibre. All optional equipment items come from the AMG Performance Studio and are available ex-factory for every C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series.

Functional race-track atmosphere in the interior

The interior also corresponds to the series production model, with a few exceptions. The two AMG sports bucket seats ensure optimum lateral support for driver and co-driver. In view of the intended deployment on the race track, four-point seat belts are used. Optimum control of the vehicle is guaranteed by the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA with flattened top and bottom rim sections and aluminium gearshift paddles.

AMG carbon-fibre trim featuring the “AMG Black Series” logo underscores the functional race-track atmosphere. For communication with the race organisers, the Safety Car is equipped with a two-way radio system and TV monitor. The camera located next to the rear license plate provides the co-driver with a view of the DTM cars following the Safety Car. Under the monitor there are four buttons in blue, green, orange and silver for operating the light bar, the stroboscope-type flashing LED lights and the horn.

DTM Safety Car provided by Mercedes-AMG since 2000

Mercedes-AMG has been providing the Safety Car ever since the beginning of the “new” DTM in 2000, alternating with Audi from race to race – and since 2012 with BMW also. In the Formula 1 World Championship, an SLS AMG is deployed as an Official F1 Safety-Car and a C 63 AMG Estate serves as an Official F1 Medical Car.

DTM AMG Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Unveiled

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at the IAA in Frankfurt

MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new DTM AMG Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, alongside Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Division, and Norbert Haug, Vice-President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

The new car is based on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé, which was launched worldwide in the summer of 2011, and is the first DTM car from Mercedes-Benz to be built around a new, improved safety concept, developed in collaboration with the ITR e.V, the DMSB (Germany’s motor racing governing body) and the DTM manufacturers. The new car incorporates a state-of-the-art carbon fibre monocoque with a roll cage made of high-strength steel. Moreover, each vehicle is equipped with six energy-absorbing crash structures, giving the driver additional protection to the front, rear and sides.

The DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé will succeed the AMG Mercedes C-Class, which is the most successful vehicle in the 27-year history of the DTM, having scored 84 victories in 156 races and five driver’s titles.

Development, design and manufacture of the new car began in June 2010 at HWA headquarters in Affalterbach, near Stuttgart, Germany. HWA is responsible for production of the cars, including engines.

Michael Schumacher: “The new 2012 Mercedes-Benz DTM car looks fantastic, but what I find even more impressive than the car’s visual appearance is the new safety concept with its innovative safety cell and more advanced carbon-fibre crash structures. This safety standard is exemplary and constitutes, in my opinion, the benchmark for touring car racing. I’m looking forward to seeing the new C-Class Coupé in action and hopefully winning lots of races. I’ve got my fingers crossed for everyone in the Mercedes-Benz DTM team.”

Nico Rosberg: “I was pleased to take part in unveiling the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at its Frankfurt Motor Show world premiere. It looks really cool and I particularly like the chrome finish. The car is certainly an important step forward for the DTM, which is a great series – I began my career racing on the same weekends as the DTM, and it will attract even more fans in 2012 when the third manufacturer arrives. Whenever possible, I still follow the races on TV, and always enjoy going to local DTM events. I will of course keep my fingers crossed next year for my Mercedes-Benz DTM colleagues and hope they can bring the title home to Stuttgart with the new C-Class Coupé.”

Gary Paffett: “The first test of a new car is always an exciting moment. After getting a feel for the handling and performance of the DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé around the Lausitzring, I can say I’m very pleased with it. Of course, we still have a lot of development work ahead of us before the 2012 season opener at Hockenheim. The driving experience is quite different to that of previous DTM cars. The new Hankook tyres for 2012 are wider and have taller sidewalls, providing more mechanical grip. Also, the gear lever has disappeared for 2012 – we will change gear using paddles on the steering wheel instead – and that’s something I’m already used to from Formula One.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “This new-generation vehicle, based on our Mercedes-Benz C- Coupé, signals the introduction of an even more spectacular racing car from the start of 2012. I am certain that the spectators will get their money’s worth from the three-way fight between Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the DTM next year.”
