The race was ended after the maximum duration of 70 minutes, because of the heavy rain. Christian Vietoris was fifth, securing his first DTM points. Maro Engel in P7 also finishes in the points.

Comments after the race:

Gary Paffett (AMG Mercedes C THOMAS SABO-Class) – fourth:

“I’m very satisfied with fourth place considering that I started from 18th position. Before the race, I hadn’t expected to be the best-placed C-Class driver. The conditions were very difficult, just like at Brands Hatch, and the race was very chaotic at times, which helped me to make good so many places. The car’s performance was also excellent. If I hadn’t spun on the first turn, I could possibly have come home before Martin Tomczyk. I’m very sorry for Bruno and his DNF, but all is not lost – the title race is not yet decided.”

Christian Vietoris (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) – fifth:

“I’ve finally achieved my first points in the DTM. My team did a super job – they were faultless. We’ve had the speed plenty of times before, but today we were able to convert that into points. The rain suited me, because I like driving in challenging conditions. Now I’m hoping to rack up some more points in the last couple of races.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) – seventh:

“More would definitely have been possible than a seventh place. Oliver Jarvis gave Jamie a shove, which then made him drive into me. That caused me to spin – but for that I would certainly have finished further up the field. The car worked very well. The team have done a good job today, and our strategy was the right one.”

David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 10th:

“It was an action-packed race here today, and the weather conditions were far from easy. One minute, I was making good progress up the field, then I dropped back again – in the end tenth place is a reasonable result.”

Jamie Green (AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 11th:

“The first lap was very eventful – four cars spun in front of me. Oliver Jarvis forced me over to the outside, causing me to hit Maro. My C-Class was damaged slightly and I no longer had the speed to keep up with the race leaders. An error on the first turn cost me more time, but unfortunately, I simply wasn’t fast enough.”

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) – retired:

“It was just bad luck – nothing you can do. Unfortunately, something suddenly went wrong with the front of the car, and then it wasn’t as drivable as at the start. We don’t yet know exactly what the problem was. I tried to keep going, because there still might have been a chance of securing some points, but I had to retire. It’s unfortunate, but it’s not the end of the world. There are still two races to go and we’re certainly not about to give up. There’s still plenty to fight for.”

Ralf Schumacher (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) – retired:

“Conditions were very difficult. We had a problem with the rear axle, but at the same time, we had to drive on the limit in order not to drop too far back and lose connection with the rest of the field. The rear wheels locked up going into the first turn. That shouldn’t really happen, but sometimes does in these circumstances – too bad. Martin Tomczyk was generally a bit faster than me, but under normal circumstances wouldn’t have got past me. I don’t actually know what went on in the collision with Filipe Albuquerque. He made contact with my rear off-side, but I didn’t really notice, because I was focused on what was happening in front of me.”

Renger van der Zande (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) – retired:

“I’m very disappointed, because there was a real chance of some points today. I had a very good start and was lying seventh. Conditions were tricky, but the car felt good. After contact with another driver, I slid off onto the grass and crashed into the wall.”

Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) – retired:

“Sadly, my race was over far too soon. In the difficult conditions I misbraked, skidding off into the gravel. Overall, driving today wasn’t all that easy. Now I’m just looking forward to the next race.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Bruno was on course to secure the championship lead when he was lying second. Had he finished in that position, he would’ve gone into the lead at the top of the table. But a problem with the front end of the car – which we still have to investigate – prevented him. We now have to make good a nine-point deficit in Valencia und Hockenheim.”

Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition Premieres in Frankfurt

The Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition is characterised by an exciting mix of exclusivity and maximum performance

The 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt is host to numerous world premieres this week, and one of those premieres that can’t be overlooked is the Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition. Inspired by the unmistakable design of the AMG performance brand, the Diavel AMG Special Edition is characterised by an exciting mix of exclusivity and maximum performance. The special model embodies the high standards of both brands and reflects the passion for exceptional performance as well as distinctive styling and precision. In addition to the Diavel AMG Special Edition, a CLS 63 AMG with a host of attractive components from the AMG Performance Studio is on display to highlight the visual similarities with the very special Ducati motorbike.

The Diavel AMG Special Edition is the first Ducati motorbike incorporating another company’s design elements, and as such forms part of the strategy being consistently pursued by AMG and Ducati since both brands entered into a cooperation agreement in November 2010 – namely an intensive exchange of ideas between the designers and engineers in Affalterbach and Bologna/Italy.

Based on the Ducati Diavel Carbon and its innovative design, the look of the Diavel AMG Special Edition has been further refined with attributes reminiscent of unique Mercedes-AMG high-performance cars: extraordinary forged wheels featuring a striking AMG look, aluminium air deflectors in the carbon-fibre panels on the side-mounted radiators, a newly developed sports exhaust system as well as bench seat finished in perforated Alcantara® with horizontal cross stitching are just some of the highlights of the Diavel AMG Special Edition. The frame, tank and rear bench seat cover are finished in diamond white metallic BRIGHT, the colour of the CLS 63 AMG, creating a stylish contrast to the matt, iridescent carbon fibre.

Like every Ducati, the Diavel AMG Special Edition is lavishly hand finished. A badge on the left engine block, bearing the signature of the technician who calibrated the desmodromic valve timing, pays tribute to the exclusivity afforded to each individual Diavel AMG Special Edition. Another feature of this special model is a numbered plaque on the fuel tank. The wheels, bench seat and rear silencers of the sports exhaust system also bear the AMG logo. Furthermore, each of the side air inlet ducts feature laser-engraved AMG lettering. The Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition will be available from the start of 2012.

CLS 63 AMG with components from the Performance Studio

The visual similarities between the Ducati Diavel AMG Special Edition and the CLS 63 AMG being presented on the Mercedes-Benz stand at the IAA International Motor Show are immediately apparent: the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package in matt finish comprises a cross strut in the front apron, exterior mirror housings, diffuser insert in the rear apron and AMG spoiler lip, forming the perfect contrast to the diamond white metallic BRIGHT paint finish. Further visual highlights include the bichromatic AMG light-alloy forged wheels featuring a 5-twin-spoke design, painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish. The front axle is fitted with 255/35 R 19 tyres, while the rear comes with 285/30 R 19 tyres. Both the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package in matt and the AMG light-alloy wheels are exclusive components available from the AMG Performance Studio, which also provides a host of options for enhancing the look of any CLS 63 AMG.

The cooperation agreement between AMG and Ducati was signed in November 2010

Visible signs of the cooperation agreement between Mercedes-AMG and Ducati, which was signed at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2010, include various marketing activities as well as joint appearances at shows and customer events. In the AMG core markets of the US, China, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Australia, Great Britain and Switzerland, the announcement of the cooperation was very soon followed by the establishment of close links at market level.

AMG has been the Official Car Partner of the Ducati MotoGP team since the start of the 2011 MotoGP season. The AMG logo appears not only on the motorcycles and racing overalls of Ducati works drivers Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi, but also on the official teamwear and in the Ducati Lounge. Furthermore, as an additional outcome of the cooperation agreement, all team trucks and vehicles have come from Mercedes-Benz.

Since the spring of 2011, both Nicky Hayden and Gabriele del Torchio, President and CEO of Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A., have been driving a CLS 63 AMG.

DTM AMG Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe Unveiled

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at the IAA in Frankfurt

MERCEDES GP PETRONAS Formula One drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg unveiled the new DTM AMG Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, alongside Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Division, and Norbert Haug, Vice-President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

The new car is based on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé, which was launched worldwide in the summer of 2011, and is the first DTM car from Mercedes-Benz to be built around a new, improved safety concept, developed in collaboration with the ITR e.V, the DMSB (Germany’s motor racing governing body) and the DTM manufacturers. The new car incorporates a state-of-the-art carbon fibre monocoque with a roll cage made of high-strength steel. Moreover, each vehicle is equipped with six energy-absorbing crash structures, giving the driver additional protection to the front, rear and sides.

The DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé will succeed the AMG Mercedes C-Class, which is the most successful vehicle in the 27-year history of the DTM, having scored 84 victories in 156 races and five driver’s titles.

Development, design and manufacture of the new car began in June 2010 at HWA headquarters in Affalterbach, near Stuttgart, Germany. HWA is responsible for production of the cars, including engines.

Michael Schumacher: “The new 2012 Mercedes-Benz DTM car looks fantastic, but what I find even more impressive than the car’s visual appearance is the new safety concept with its innovative safety cell and more advanced carbon-fibre crash structures. This safety standard is exemplary and constitutes, in my opinion, the benchmark for touring car racing. I’m looking forward to seeing the new C-Class Coupé in action and hopefully winning lots of races. I’ve got my fingers crossed for everyone in the Mercedes-Benz DTM team.”

Nico Rosberg: “I was pleased to take part in unveiling the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé for the 2012 DTM season at its Frankfurt Motor Show world premiere. It looks really cool and I particularly like the chrome finish. The car is certainly an important step forward for the DTM, which is a great series – I began my career racing on the same weekends as the DTM, and it will attract even more fans in 2012 when the third manufacturer arrives. Whenever possible, I still follow the races on TV, and always enjoy going to local DTM events. I will of course keep my fingers crossed next year for my Mercedes-Benz DTM colleagues and hope they can bring the title home to Stuttgart with the new C-Class Coupé.”

Gary Paffett: “The first test of a new car is always an exciting moment. After getting a feel for the handling and performance of the DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé around the Lausitzring, I can say I’m very pleased with it. Of course, we still have a lot of development work ahead of us before the 2012 season opener at Hockenheim. The driving experience is quite different to that of previous DTM cars. The new Hankook tyres for 2012 are wider and have taller sidewalls, providing more mechanical grip. Also, the gear lever has disappeared for 2012 – we will change gear using paddles on the steering wheel instead – and that’s something I’m already used to from Formula One.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “This new-generation vehicle, based on our Mercedes-Benz C- Coupé, signals the introduction of an even more spectacular racing car from the start of 2012. I am certain that the spectators will get their money’s worth from the three-way fight between Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the DTM next year.”

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Now Available With AMG RIDE CONTROL Sport Suspension

Pressing the shock absorber symbol allows adjustment of the damping characteristics to either Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is now even more attractive and individual thanks to the new high-tech option of the AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension with adaptive damping that combines concerted performance-orientation with optimal comfort on long journeys. Blind Spot Assist improves active safety on board the gull-wing model. Further optional features such as AMG 10-spoke forged wheels painted in matt black, red-painted brake callipers or AMG high-gloss black trim make for even more exclusivity.

A glance at the center console of the SLS AMG not only reveals the stylishly designed, new E-SELECT lever with its embossed AMG emblem, but also a new shock absorber symbol in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. This key symbolises the new AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension with variable, electronically controlled damping. Depending on the driving situation, speed and road surface conditions, this optional system almost instantly varies the damping characteristics and automatically reduces the body roll angles. For the driver this means immediate and variable adaptation between the greatest possible agility and the best possible ride comfort – for any driving style and route.

Maximum individuality: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”

A small key with a major effect: pressing the shock absorber symbol allows individual, convenient adjustment of the damping characteristics. There is a choice of three modes: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”. The currently selected mode is shown in the AMG main menu.

“Comfort” is automatically active whenever the engine is started, and provides a sensitive damper responce with comfort-oriented characteristics. “Comfort” is recommended for cruising at moderate speeds – e.g. in urban traffic or on motorway sections with speed restrictions. But even on poor, bumpy road surfaces, “Comfort” mode will be the first choice of many SLS AMG drivers by virtue of the softer damper setup.

To select “Sport” mode the key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is pressed once. The left control lamp in the key and the AMG main menu display tell the driver that “Sport” mode has been manually activated. In “Sport” mode the shock absorbers have a tauter response depending on the driving situation, which not only ensures better road contact when driving in a sporty manner, but also more effectively reduces body roll and pitching. In most driving situations, “Sport” mode provides the best compromise between satisfactory suspension comfort, low body movements and high agility.

“Sport plus” is recommended for fast lap times on a race circuit: apart from higher damping forces, this mode has special control algorithms configured for a decidedly sporty driving style on uneven road surfaces. The driver is able to store his personal setup using the AMG key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Sustained pressure on the AMG symbol stores the currently selected suspension mode and also the selected transmission mode. As before, the driver has four different transmission modes available: fuel economy mode “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual). Brief pressure on the AMG key quickly and conveniently activates the preferred combination.

With immediate effect, the new AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension is available on request for the SLS AMG Coupé and Roadster. Alternatively the gull-wing model is available with the basic AMG suspension or the AMG Performance suspension, both without variable damping characteristics.

Numerous parameters monitored by electronics

The electronic damper control is based on acceleration sensors which register dynamic vehicle body and wheel movements, both absolutely and in relation to each other. Other factors relevant to the driving dynamics, such as drive and braking moments, the steering angle and lateral/linear acceleration are continuously registered and evaluated. The current vehicle speed, wheel rotation speeds and selected gear ratios are also continuously analysed. High-performance control electronics in permanent dialogue with the engine and transmission control unit ensure that the forces of the four newly developed shock absorbers are adapted practically instantly.

Depending on the selected suspension mode, different control configurations and parameter weightings are active to strike the best possible balance between comfort and dynamic performance. Electromagnetically actuated valves in the shock absorbers control the oil flow between the lower and upper chamber. In “Comfort” mode more oil flows through the valves, and less in “Sport” and “Sport plus” mode.

Double wishbone suspension of forged aluminium

All four wheels are located on double wishbones with a track rod, a technology that has proven itself in motor racing right through to Formula 1. With a double-wishbone axle, the wheel location and suspension functions remain separate; the spring/damper struts are supported on the lower wishbone. The double-wishbone concept with its high camber and track rigidity positively locates the wheel with minimal elastic movements, providing the driver with an optimum sense of road contact when driving at the limits.

Wishbones, steering knuckles and hub carriers at the front and rear are made entirely from forged aluminium – substantially reducing the unsprung masses; this configuration also notably improves the suspension response. The long wheelbase of 2680 millimetres not only results in outstanding straight-line stability but also low wheel load shifts, significantly reducing the vehicle’s tendency to dive and squat when braking and accelerating. The broad track width – front 1682, rear 1653 millimetres – ensures lower shifts in the wheel loads from the inner to the outer wheel when cornering, enabling the tyres to retain more grip.

The chosen solution with a front-mid-engine plus transaxle configuration ensures an ideal front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent. Mounting the engine behind the front axle has created the ideal conditions for consummate driving dynamics with precise steering, first-class agility, low inertia with spontaneous directional changes and outstanding traction.

Direct steering, differential lock and 3-stage ESP®

The rack-and-pinion steering gear provides a consistently direct steering feel with a constant mechanical ratio of 13.6:1, in tune with the high expectations placed on a super sports car. The power steering provides speed-sensitive assistance and improves feedback for the driver as the road speed increases: an indispensable factor for high-speed straight-line driving. Mounting the steering gear in front of the engine on the integral subframe enables the engine to be set down very low. The SLS AMG comes with 3-stage ESP® as standard, providing the driver with access to the three “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling mode” and “ESP OFF” modes at the touch of a button. In “ESP OFF” mode too, vigorously operating the brake pedal restores all the normal ESP® functions.

The acceleration skid control (ASR) system’s traction logic is active in all three ESP® modes. If one of the drive wheels starts to spin, specific brake pressure is applied to improve traction significantly – especially in conjunction with the standard-fit mechanical multi-disc limited-slip differential. This means that the engine power is transferred to the road even more effectively when driving in a particularly dynamic style.

Blind Spot Assist increases active safety

The new, optionally available Blind Spot Assist is able to increase active safety. This visual and acoustic warning system uses the close-range radar sensors of the standard PARKTRONIC system to recognise vehicles in good time where visibility is restricted. When the system registers another vehicle in the blind spot, this is indicated to the driver by a red triangle lighting up in the relevant exterior mirror. An acoustic warning also sounds if the driver operates the indicators despite the visual warning.

Blind Spot Assist is operational from a speed of 30 km/h. It monitors the area around the vehicle to a distance of around 3.5 metres on each side and three metres beyond the rear. Vehicles in the process of overtaking are shown immediately when they enter the monitored area of the difference in relative speeds between the two vehicles is not more than 16 km/h. Vehicles that have just been overtaken are however shown with a delay of 1.5 seconds after entering the monitored area, thus preventing distraction by unnecessary warnings.

New optional appointments for more style and design

Available as an optional extra, the car’s visual appearance is enhanced by weight-optimised AMG 10-spoke forged wheels shod with tyres in size 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear). Their matt black paint finish corresponds perfectly with the high-sheen rim flange. Optional red-painted brake callipers all-round provide a further visual highlight.

Single-tone or two-tone designo leather in espresso brown is available as a new interior colour – this dark shade of brown perfectly matches the new metallic paint finish AMG Sepang brown. New AMG high-gloss black trim (optional) is an exclusive alternative to the standard centre conslole in solid metal or the optional carbon-fibre trim.

All prices for the new features at a glance (incl. 19 % VAT):

  • AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension with adaptive damping: € 2320.50
  • AMG 10-spoke forged wheels with matt black paint finish and high-sheen rim flange: € 3272.50

Final lap: After 88 laps and a total distance of 169.752 km, Gary Paffett comes home as the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver in P4 at the seventh race of the season in Brands Hatch. Owing to heavy rain, the race ran to the 70-minute time limit rather than the full planned distance. Ralf Schumacher gained one position from sixth on the grid to finish in fifth place. David Coulthard gains four places in the course of the race to finish twelfth.

Comments after the race:

Gary Paffett (AMG Mercedes C THOMAS SABO-Class) – Fourth:

“Fourth place is obviously not ideal, but given the circumstances, it’s a decent result. I was fastest this morning in warm-up, so it could have gone better for us in the dry, but it was a tough race in the wet. I dropped down a couple of places at the start and after that, couldn’t initially keep up with the pace of the leaders. In the second half of the race we were more competitive, and I kept closing on Edoardo Mortara in third place, but unfortunately in the end it wasn’t enough.”

Ralf Schumacher (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Fifth:

“Although the rain made conditions tricky, this was a good race for me – I’m more than satisfied with fifth place. My C-Class was really quick today, and the crew did some excellent work – so a special thanks to them.”

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) – Seventh:

“Unfortunately the heavy rain really didn’t suit me – starting eighth on the grid, the spray meant I had very poor visibility out on track. That’s why I drove carefully in the beginning to avoid taking any risks, and not make any mistakes. Many thanks to my team for their quick work in the pits, which enabled me to move up a place – that won me two valuable points in the overall standings. I’ll be back on the attack over the next three races, aiming to score as many points as possible.”

Jamie Green (AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Eighth:

“I’m of course not too happy with eighth place in the race, in view of starting from fourth position on the grid. It was an eventful race for me – on the first stint I went into the gravel, then I spun: both incidents cost me a lot of time. Still, I fought my way back into the points and I overtook Oliver Jarvis just before the finish for eighth place.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Tenth:

“Unfortunately, I didn’t get away well. Timo Scheider forced me over to the outside of the track in turn one, causing me to drop down the field a few places. My C-Class had plenty of speed after that and I moved up a couple of positions. Unfortunately, my car sustained some damage in a collision with Miguel Molina. It wasn’t easy to drive from that point onwards. My team did a great job and we had a good strategy – but today unfortunately, more just wasn’t possible.” David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Twelfth:

“I moved up four places during the race, but all in all I had a poor day. Racing in the wet is certainly more entertaining for the spectators, but I always prefer dry conditions. It’s a shame, because my C-Class was quick today.”

Christian Vietoris (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 13th:

“Sadly, the race didn’t go according to plan for me – even though I’d hoped for rain. I got off to a decent start from eleventh on the grid and moved up a few places. Unfortunately, I lost some time in a pit stop and then later on I received a drive-through penalty – after that, 13th was the best I could achieve.”

Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 14th:

“The heavy rain meant this wasn’t an easy race for any of the drivers. The conditions were so bad that at times I had problems keeping the car on the track. At least I had an exciting duel with Renger van der Zande, but overall I’m afraid this wasn’t a good weekend for me.”

Renger van der Zande (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 15th:

“Unfortunately, I just wasn’t quick enough today. Actually, I fancied my chances more in the wet than yesterday in the dry, but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way. We must now sit down together and analyse the data to find the cause.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Our performance in the wet today wasn’t as strong as usual, but the points standings are now almost level at the top of the table with just three races to go this season. The battle for the title starts here and Bruno Spengler is in with an excellent chance. Congratulations to Audi on their one-two-three finish.”

Mercedes-Benz Diesel Engines Will Now Benefit from NANOSLIDE Technology

NANOSLIDE reduces engine weight by 4.3 kilograms compared to the preceding engine, and brings an additional fuel saving of 3%

Mercedes-Benz diesel engines will now benefit from twin‑wire arc spraying technology that has been used exclusively in AMG engines for the last five years. NANOSLIDE technology, developed by Mercedes-Benz,is the process in which twin-wire arc spraying is used to melt iron/carbon wires and spray them onto the cylinder surfaces of the lightweight aluminium crankcase with the help of a gasflow. Very fine finishing of the resulting nano-crystalline iron coating creates an almost mirror-like, smooth surface with fine pores, which reduces friction and wear between the piston assembly and the cylinder wall. Other advantages include lower engine weight, less fuel consumption and lower emissions. This innovation from Mercedes-Benz has been successfully used in the 6.3-litre AMG engines since 2006.

Mercedes-Benz uses the collective term BlueEFFICIENCY to describe a whole range of different measures designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions: sophisticated aerodynamics, weight-saving measures and intelligent control of ancillary units are a few examples. With NANOSLIDE technology, the world’s oldest automobile manufacturer is adding another innovation to this technology package. It sets new standards in the production of cylinder linings. These help to ensure that the piston moves up and down within the cylinder with the least possible friction losses. Comparatively heavy grey cast-iron liners with a thickness of up to five millimetres are the current state of the art.

The NANOSLIDE procedure takes a new approach. Wires of iron/carbon alloy are melted in an electric arc, and the melted material is “sprayed” onto the cylinder wall by a gasflow, where it is deposited as a layered, ultra-fine to nano-crystalline coating. The NANOSLIDE coating is then given an extremely smooth finish by a special honing process, after which it has a thickness of only 0.1 to 0.15 millimetres and has a mirror-like surface. The honing process also exposes pores in the material which are able to retain oil and thereby ensure optimal lubrication of the piston assembly. The result is not only low friction, and therefore greatly reduced mechanical friction losses compared to grey cast-iron cylinder liners (up to 50 percent), but also extremely high wear resistance.

Mercedes-Benz has plenty of experience with its in-house development of NANOSLIDE technology. In July 2005 Mercedes-AMG GmbH presented a 6.3‑litre V8 which not only delivered outstanding performance figures, but was also the world’s first series production engine to feature cylinder walls with a twin-wire arc sprayed coating. Since 2006 this cutting-edge cylinder coating technology has been a key component of all 6.3-litre AMG engines. The procedure has proved highly successful in more than 75,000 high-performance AMG engines to date, and meets all expectations. The specialist term “NANOSLIDE” has meanwhile become an accolade. The process involves numerous new inventions and ideas, and is protected by more than 90 patent families and over 40 patents.

In view of this positive experience, Mercedes-Benz is the world’s first manufacturer to have developed this technology further for use in a V6 diesel engine.

NANOSLIDE reduces the engine weight by 4.3 kilograms (9.5 pounds) compared to the preceding engine, and brings an additional fuel saving of 3 percent. The V6 diesel engine in the ML 350 BlueTEC, for example, develops an output of 190 kW (258 hp) from a displacement of 2987 cc, and generates 620 Nm of torque. Thanks to BlueTEC with AdBlue exhaust treatment, this M-Class model already meets the emission values planned for 2014 in accordance with the Euro-6 standard, and as such is one of the world’s cleanest diesel vehicles. With a combined consumption of 6.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, the ML 350 BlueTEC improves on the figures of its predecessor by 2.1 litres, or 24 percent. CO2 emissions have dropped from 235 to 179 grams per kilometre, not least thanks to the new NANOSLIDE technology.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will receive a 422 HP engine and will be in dealerships as of January 2012. The badging will remain the same showing the roadster as a SLK 55 AMG and is expected to cost 72 590 €.

At the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt, the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will make its world premiere – but we have the first pictures and data: 8 cylinder, 422 hp – 540 Nm, V-Max is electronically limited at 250 km / h (155 mph) – 5461 cc (M152 naturally aspirated V8) . The SLK AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h (62 mph), in 4.6 seconds.

The special feature of the SLK is the cylinder deactivation: If the full power of the engine isn’t necessary, it is able to shut off 4 cylinders -giving fuel savings over 30 percent. The cylinder deactivation can be switched within 30 milliseconds and provides 230 Nm of torque and has 800-3600 U / min available when the driver activates “C” Controlled Efficiency.

Visually, we see the usual AMG vehicle elements and changed front and rear bumper along with the typical AMG LED daytime running lights. On the exterior, the engine sound still comes from four exhaust pipes at the corner.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series World Premiere

The Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series celebrates its debut, officially making it the most powerful C-Class in history

After months of speculation and spy photos, today it’s official:  Mercedes has unveiled to the ridiculously great C63 AMG Coupe Black Series.  Simply put, it’s the most powerful C-Class of all time, boasting a maximum output of 380 kW (517 hp) and a maximum torque of 620 newton metres, and in Mercedes own words, it embodies AMG’s brand claim of driving performance like no other AMG model.  It is, in no clearer terms, a masterpiece of automotive engineering.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine impresses with its hefty torque, tremendous pulling power and responsiveness, and ensures high-calibre performance: the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds (all data provisional). Exclusive fun at the wheel comes courtesy of the adjustable AMG coil-over sports suspension, the AMG high-performance compound braking system and the functional standard equipment. The AMG Track Package is available as an option to enhance driving dynamics even further. It boasts sports tyres and active rear-axle transmission cooling, plus the AMG Aerodynamics package including flics, a functionally tuned front splitter and an adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil.

Broad, low, brawny and ready to pounce from a standstill – the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series makes a mighty impression. It’s clear right from the first time you set eyes on it that the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is made for ambitious laps on a closed-off race track. In visual terms the new high-performance vehicle is reminiscent of the SLS AMG GT3 customer sports car and symbolises the transfer of technology from the sphere of motorsport, which has been part of the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMG GmbH for 44 years now.

With its new C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, AMG is presenting an exciting sports car for enthusiasts who are passionate about sports cars which are big on horsepower, and this marks the impressive continuation of the Black Series strategy, which began back in 2006. AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz Cars, is once again demonstrating its expertise when it comes to designing and developing emotionally appealing high-performance cars.

“AMG has its roots in international motorsport. The new C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is the best proof there is for the permanent transfer of technology from the race track to the road. The numerous successes in the DTM, the customer sports range featuring the SLS AMG GT3 and our commitment to Formula 1, where we have been providing the Official F1Ô Safety Car and the Official F1 Ô Medical Car for the past 15 years, continuously spur on our engineers and technicians. The C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series embodies the new AMG brand claim, Driving Performance, like no other AMG model”, comments Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

* Preliminary data

Arrow-shaped front section with large cooling air openings

It doesn’t matter from which angle you’re looking at it: the new C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series displays its ties with motorsport from every perspective. The arrow-shaped front section with the central Mercedes star in the radiator grille is the visual synonym for its unfettered forwards thrust. The air intakes in the striking front apron ensure reliable air flow through the large cooling modules. Two openings in the aluminium bonnet support the expelling of engine heat, whilst the struts positioned at an angle in the front apron emphasise the vehicle’s width. The black front splitter located at the lower end helps to balance the vehicle aerodynamically.

The expressive design continues in the side view: the newly developed front axle with a greater track width calls for new wings, which have been widened by 28 millimetres on each side. “6.3” logos give a nod to the sheer power of the large-displacement eight-cylinder high-speed naturally aspirated engine beneath the bonnet. Air outlets intimated behind the wheel cut-outs call to mind powerful racing cars. The onlooker discovers a black strip on the restyled AMG side skirts – a look which continues the idea of the front splitter. On each side the rear wings have also been widened by 42 millimetres, due to the greater track width of the rear axle. Air openings are hinted at in front of the rear wheels, forming a fitting conclusion.

AMG light-alloy wheels featuring light forging technology

255/35 R 19 and 285/30 R 19 – these are the impressive wheel formats for the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series at its market launch. The wheel/tyre combination is mounted on 9 x 19 (front) and 9.5 x 19 (rear) AMG light-alloy wheels, fills out the wings to stunning effect and plays a significant part in the dynamic appearance of this new AMG sports car.

Painted titanium grey, the high-sheen light-alloy wheels are produced using particularly light forging technology – as is the case on the SLS AMG. These forged wheels weigh a total of eleven kilograms less than comparable wheels with a conventional design. The lower weight results in reduced unsprung masses, which improves both the suspension’s response and the steering precision.

Broad effect of the tail end with a diffuser insert

The tail end of the Black Series coupé is also a feast for the eyes: the new rear apron with its expressive black diffuser insert creates a broad effect. Just like on the SLS AMG GT3, it protrudes beyond the profile of the rear apron. The black grille on the upper end of the diffuser insert is an eye-catching feature, as is the AMG sports exhaust system: both of the chromed twin tailpipes integrated into the rear apron have an angular cross-section. The spoiler lip on the boot lid is painted in the vehicle colour and reduces lift at the rear axle, resulting in more driving stability at high speeds. The AMG logo with its discreet “Black Series” lettering is reserved exclusively for the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series.

Engine with high-tech components from the gull-wing model

A displacement of 6.3 litres, a maximum output of 380 kW (517 hp) and a torque of 620 newton metres from eight cylinders – one glance at the technical data and it’s clear that the engineering behind the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is every bit the equal of its sensational appearance. The high-torque M156 naturally aspirated engine was specially refined for the new two-door model, whose forged pistons, connecting rods and the crankshaft with a lightweight design, for example, all come courtesy of the SLS AMG. These measures are flanked by a new engine control unit. As the car’s performance proves, the uprated V8 engine has an easy time of it in the coupé: the sprint from standing to 100 is over in 4.2* seconds (* preliminary data).

Plenty of pulling power, an agile response and hefty torque – the qualities of the large-displacement AMG high-speed naturally aspirated engine arouse unadulterated passion in the driver. The jewel in the crown is the emotive, hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound from the AMG sports exhaust system.

The optimised engine oil cooling ensures more performance even when the vehicle is put through its paces in harsh race-track conditions. With the aid of components from the SLS AMG, the AMG experts have managed to give the oil cooler a cooling surface which is 50 percent larger. The tried-and-trusted, innovative AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission takes care of power transmission. Four transmission modes, the double-declutching function and RACE START promise maximum motoring pleasure and a high degree of variability. In the “Sport plus” and “Manual” transmission modes the gear changes take a mere 100 milliseconds.

AMG coil-over sports suspension with an AMG rear axle differential lock

The AMG sports suspension is a sophisticated new development. It has been designed as a coil-over suspension, as is the norm in motorsport – and it represents a hallmark feature of a Black Series model. It offers numerous setting options, and allows the driver to create their own personal set-up. The track width of the axles has been widened by 40 (at the front) and 79 millimetres (at the rear) respectively. In conjunction with the modified torsion-bar stabilisers, the C 63 AMG Black Series impresses with its pronounced driving dynamics, high grip and low roll angle. The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering facilitates superb vehicle control: the retuned map control for the power assistance ensures optimum steering precision.

The standard-specification AMG rear axle differential lock is responsible for reliable traction in particular for race-track applications. The 3-stage ESP® offers the ideal solution for all driving situations: via the ESP® button the driver can choose from the “ESP ON”, “Sport Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” stages. In view of the increased driving dynamics, not only has the anti-lock braking system been completely retuned; the AMG high-performance braking system has also been redeveloped: a larger braking system is now used, with discs featuring compound technology proven in motorsport at the front axle (format: 390 x 36 millimetres) and integral discs at the rear axle (360 x 26 mm). Red-painted six-piston fixed callipers at the front and four-piston fixed callipers at the rear reliably decelerate the perforated, fade-resistant brake discs, which are ventilated all round.

Interior with a functional motor-racing atmosphere

The captivating high-tech components and the spectacular exterior design both find their logical continuation in the interior of the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, which is black with red highlight elements, displaying the functional atmosphere of a true racing vehicle, whilst at the same time positively glowing with high quality and lovingly crafted details. Two AMG sports bucket seats facilitate the best levels of lateral support and thus optimum vehicle control on the race track. The black DINAMICA microfibre upholstery on the centre panels of the seats and doors is a new type of synthetic fibre which is characterised by its high lightfastness. The omission of the rear bench seat underlines the vehicle’s sporty character and reduces its weight. As an option the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is also available as a four-seater including the AMG sports seats familiar from the C 63 AMG Coupé – and with single seats in the rear.

The AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre with a steering wheel rim featuring flattened top and bottom sections has aluminium shift paddles for manual gear changes. Red seat belts and red contrasting topstitching on the steering wheel, on the seats, door centre panels, armrests on the doors, the centre console and on the shift lever gaiter add some interesting highlights. An exclusive “Black Series” logo adorns the trim on the dashboard, which sports a high-gloss black piano-lacquer look. The dashboard with three autonomous round dials has a three-dimensional TFT colour display. On opening the vehicle door the driver is greeted by AMG lettering. Possible displays for the engine oil temperature, the ESP® mode or the gear selection are integrated into the AMG main menu. The rotary switch for the C, S, S+ and M transmission modes and RACE START is located on the centre console next to the selector lever with a DINAMICA microfibre cover.

The C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is proof positive that high driving dynamics and excellent active and passive safety need not necessarily be mutually exclusive: five airbags, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters for all seats are part of the standard specification, as are the anti-lock braking system ABS, the 3-stage ESP®, Headlamp Assist, the tyre pressure loss warning system and cruise control with SPEEDTRONIC variable speed limiter.

The standard specification also includes (selection):

  • AMG door sills in stainless steel, brushed, with AMG logo
  • AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel, with rubber studs
  • Audio 20 CD radio with double tuner, colour display, Bluetooth® interface, hands-free function, USB interface and eight loudspeakers
  • THERMATIC automatic climate control

AMG Track Package and AMG Aerodynamics package

AMG has two special packages to offer for enhancing driving dynamics even further: the AMG Track Package comprises 255/35 R 19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear sports tyres from Dunlop. They have been exclusively developed for the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, and they tangibly and measurably increase grip. Active rear-axle transmission cooling improves performance in punishing race-track conditions. The radiator is located in the rear apron and the airflow passes through it effectively.

What are known as flics are part of the AMG Aerodynamics package. They are made of genuine carbon fibre and located on the front apron. Also included in the package are a functionally tuned front splitter made of genuine carbon fibre and a fixed carbon-fibre rear aerofoil with an adjustable blade. Both components not only increase the lift at the front and rear axle; they also optimise the vehicle’s aerodynamic balance.

Other optional extras include:

  • AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package (cross strut in front apron, exterior mirror housing, inserts on the side sill panel, diffuser insert and spoiler lip in genuine carbon fibre)

Four captivating Black Series models since 2006

Whilst its driving dynamics are totally suited to the race track, the new C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series offers all the properties which characterise a true Mercedes-Benz: suitability for everyday use, durability, safety and quality.

The most powerful C-Class of all time is the fourth Black Series model to be launched since 2006. The first one was the SLK 55 AMG Black Series. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine in the decidedly puristic two-seater enticed customers with its maximum output of 294 kW (400 hp) and a torque of 520 newton metres, and between July 2006 and April 2007 120 units were produced. The CLK 63 AMG Black Series followed directly in its footsteps. The two-seater coupé was powered by an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine with 373 kW (507 hp) and a torque of 630 newton metres. Between April 2007 and March 2008 700 vehicles were made.

The highlight up until now was the SL 65 AMG Black Series, which was unveiled in July 2008: the high-performance coupé still captivates drivers today with its spectacular appearance, unique performance data, systematic lightweight construction and exclusivity of the highest calibre. The AMG 6.0 litre V12 biturbo engine with a maximum output of 493 kW (670 hp) and torque of 1000 newton metres made the SL 65 AMG Black Series the most powerful AMG vehicle ever to enter series production. In total there were 350 units built from September 2008 to August 2009.

The C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series is celebrating its world premiere during the Formula 1 race on the Nürburgring, the German Grand Prix (23 – 24 July 2011). The market launch will follow in January 2012, and its sales price is 115,430 euros (incl. 19% VAT).

The clear, minimalistic architecture characterises the atmosphere of the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach. Individually produced furnishings in a conical design form a tapering arrangement towards the terrace area. The colour scheme is black and white, with colour contrasts provided by accessories and unique mementos in the display cabinets. The innovative, variable ceiling lighting creates a suitable, homely atmosphere suited to the time of day, season and weather-induced lighting conditions.

The AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach is divided into different areas. The “brand wall” is devoted entirely to motorsports, as is immediately recognisable by the oversized motif of the SLS AMG GT3, which was hand-made by AMG designers. Opposite the “brand wall” is the “lifestyle wall”, where visitors are able to relax or converse. A selection of media such as an iPad and Playstation are provided for individual entertainment. A library with a selection of reference material and coffee-table books is an invitation to quiet enjoyment. The homely atmosphere at the “lifestyle wall” is enhanced by exclusive leather furniture whose design is reminiscent of AMG sports seats with its leather upholstery and contrasting topstitching.

The so-called “Silent Space” located at the centre of the AMG Private Lounge is provided for conversation in a private but informal atmosphere. Next to this is the coffee bar, whose rear face features an impressive, fabric-lined photo motif of the SLS AMG on the Paul Ricard race circuit in Le Castellet (southern France) with its distinctive, coloured run-off areas. The large window area affords a view of the 73 square-metre terrace, where visitors are able to relax and converse in the open air on exclusive lounge furniture.

Regional dishes with a culinary touch

Behind the coffee bar is the dining area, which is partitioned off and enables up to 18 guests to be catered for. The culinary focus is on light dishes with a regional touch. The atmosphere in the dining area is characterised by a large photographic motif, once again of the SLS AMG on the Paul Ricard race circuit, but this time taken against a backdrop of warm evening sunlight. A semi-transparent sunshade in front of the large glassed area allows a view of a freely-arranged garden in the Japanese Zen style.

The various topic areas of the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach are reflected in different flooring designs: parquet, ceramic tiles, different carpeting and wood on the terrace provide a distinctive ambience. All the furnishings to be found in the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach are custom-made for their purpose. With this philosophy AMG reinforces the message of exclusive individuality – a central claim of the performance brand within Mercedes-Benz.

Customer events and press conferences

The AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach is primarily designed to give AMG customers a premium experience of a multifunctional nature. The very latest video and audio technology is available for presentations, multimedia shows and press conferences. An impressive sound experience is ensured by components from Bang & Olufsen. The exclusive AMG cooperation partners are also represented with one-off displays, with Ducati and IWC presenting selected editions and exhibits in the “lifestyle wall”.

New sample room in the AMG Performance Studio

While occupying a separate space, the new sample room in the AMG Performance Studio follows the theme of the AMG Private Lounge. This is where individual automotive masterpieces are created in a direct dialogue with the customer. The practically limitless variety available from the AMG Performance Studio is both visible and tangible in the form of various leather types and colors, paint samples, carbon-fibre, wood or solid metal trim elements, designo items and complete technical components.

The bar installed in the sample room follows the same style as the coffee bar in the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach: one striking styling element is the conically tapered bar surface.

BRABUS Aerodynamic-Enhancement Kit for the Mercedes E-Class and S-Class AMG

The Mercedes S-Class with AMG styling gets a more athletic appearance with additional BRABUS body components

Brabus today unveiled new tuning programs for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class AMG models.

Brabus design updates include a revised styling package with a front lip spoiler, a rear diffuser and a trunk-mounted spoiler on both models. Brabus also offers a carbon fiber version which includes all the previously stated components in addition to a stainless-steel sport exhaust system with two different modes.

Additional options include sport front fenders, a bespoke interior and wheel options in sizes up to 20 inches. Being from Brabus, customers can also order engine upgrades for the 5.5-liter and 6.3-liter V8.

BRABUS Aerodynamic-Enhancement Kit for the Mercedes E-Class with AMG Body Styling

The BRABUS designers have modeled a front spoiler lip that attaches to the lower part of the AMG front apron on the sedans and wagons of the latest E-Class. Its sophisticated shape further reduces lift on the front axle for further improved directional stability.

For the sedan there is also a diffuser and rear spoiler that is mounted on the trunk lid. The former features a centrally located reflector, and stylishly blends with the rear bumper. It has cutouts on either side for the tailpipes of the production exhaust or of the BRABUS quad sport exhaust system.

Like the front spoiler the components for the rear are manufactured in OEM quality from Pur-R-Rim plastic ensuring perfect fit and excellent paintability, both in body or in contrasting color. BRABUS also offers these components with a titanium-colored paint finish.

BRABUS Aerodynamic-Enhancement Kit for the Mercedes S-Class with AMG Body Styling

The Mercedes S-Class with AMG styling also gets a more athletic appearance with additional BRABUS body components that are manufactured in OEM quality from Pur-R-Rim as well. The BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement kit can be painted in body color or come with a glossy titanium paint finish.

The BRABUS front spoiler improves the aerodynamic properties of the luxury sedan. As a result, the car delivers an even smoother ride, particularly at high speeds.

The rear spoiler and diffuser, which also features a centrally located reflector, also contribute to even better high-speed handling.

BRABUS Aerodynamic-Enhancement Kit and Flap Control Exhaust for the Mercedes E 63 AMG

A BRABUS aero update is also available for the E 63 AMG. To further optimize directional stability at high speeds, the BRABUS designers have developed a carbon-fiber front spoiler lip that attaches to the production bumper of the E 63 sedan or wagon. Custom-tailored air ducts from BRABUS lend the side outlets of the AMG apron even more sporty profile.

Also made from super-light composite material are the BRABUS rear spoiler lip and the diffuser insert, which are both reserved for the sedan.

The rear appearance of this model is characterized by the visual trademark of BRABUS, the centrally located reflector. But that’s not all: the diffuser provides the perfect backdrop for the ceramics-coated dual design tailpipes of the BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system. Thrilling looks are not the only strengths of the sport exhaust. An integrated flap system lets the driver choose between a discrete ‘coming home’ mode and the sport setting that provides an even more exciting exhaust note, all at the push of a button in the cockpit.

BRABUS Aerodynamic-Enhancement Kit and Flap Control Exhaust for the Mercedes S 63 AMG

The S 63 can be refined in a similar manner: an additional front spoiler made from Formula 1 material of choice carbon fiber for the AMG bumper was modeled for it as well. It benefits the car’s appearance and handling characteristics at high speed.

In addition to the spoiler lip for the trunk lid there is also a center diffuser with reflector for this model. Also in the product program: the stainless-steel BRABUS flap control exhaust system. It features cast-aluminum ceramics-coated tailpipes and a variable exhaust note controlled from the steering wheel that spans the gap from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.

The BRABUS program naturally also offers countless additional options for customizing all AMG models. These include custom-tailored BRABUS Monoblock wheels with diameters of up to 20 inches, depending on the model in question. BRABUS front sport fenders, available for all E- and S-Class models, are yet another visual delicacy.

BRABUS wouldn’t be BRABUS if it didn’t offer engine tuning for the various AMG engines. Highlights in this category are the 6.3-liter V8 fast-revving engine and the new 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine.

The interior also offers a wide open playing field for refinement. The BRABUS upholstery shop uses supple leather and Alcantara to adapt the interior to the customer’s personal preferences down to the last detail. Other instruments of cockpit refinement are carbon-fiber and exotic wood trim elements available in any desired color and in a number of different designs.

Jay Leno Tours AMG and Hand Assembles an Engine

Jay Leno visited the AMG engine shop and assisted in the assembly of an AMG 6.3 V8 engine for the SLS AMG

The star of late night, Jay Leno, paid a visit to AMG recently. Ola Källenius, the Chairman of the Mercedes-AMG GmbH management board, gave Jay Leno a comprehensive overview of the company and its products. During his one-day visit the comedian and automobile enthusiast was not only able to acquaint himself with the new SLS AMG Roadster and the SLS AMG E-CELL during test drives, but also hand-assembled an AMG V8 engine.

Jay Leno was greeted by Ola Källenius on his arrival at Stuttgart airport. After a brief familiarisation with the car, Jay Leno had the opportunity to drive the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster on the motorway and on country roads: “A great car that gives you a fantastic feeling. This will be a real winner back home in California,” Jay Leno commented. During subsequent test drives on the Daimler AG test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, the American talkmaster was able to enjoy the incomparable dynamism of the Roadster. Jay Leno: “The SLS AMG Roadster delivers top performance. Whether the engine, transmission, handling or brakes – you feel that the engineers at AMG are serious! When I was 18 or 19 years old I worked for Mercedes-Benz in America. I knew about the test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim from films in which Mercedes sedans like the 220 SE or the 300 SEL 6.3 were driven through the banked curve. I have always wanted to see this for real. It took me over 40 years to do it, but now I’m here! It’s fantastic to drive the latest AMG models here on the test track today.”

Thrilled with the dynamism of the electrically powered gullwing model

Jay Leno was also able to enjoy a practically silent but emphatically dynamic driving experience behind the wheel of the SLS AMG E-CELL: “The power delivery from standstill is fantastic. It’s unbelievable how the 392 kW and 880 newton metres catapult the gullwing down the track. Very impressive, especially because you hear nothing except a little wind and tyre noise. And thanks to four-wheel drive, the SLS AMG E-CELL has no problem in bringing its enormous power onto the road. The performance and handling are every bit the equal of the SLS AMG with the V8 engine. This is the future! I have a Baker Electric dating from 1909 in my collection. It’s unbelievable how electric drive technology has developed over 100 years or so!”

Engine assembly according to the AMG “one man, one engine” philosophy

Following a tour of the AMG Performance Studio, where individual customer wishes are realised by dedicated craftsmen and special one-off examples are created, Jay Leno visited the AMG engine shop and assisted in the assembly of an AMG 6.3 V8 engine for the SLS AMG – by hand of course, according to the traditional AMG “one man, one engine” philosophy. Every AMG technician in the engine production department is responsible for an engine from start to finish. Accompanied by two experienced AMG technicians, Jay Leno installed the crankshaft, cylinder heads and even the wiring himself, and carried out the subsequent quality tests. Afterwards he applied an AMG engine plate bearing his signature to the completed eight-cylinder power unit. The TV star was then able to watch “his” AMG V8 engine being tested extensively on the glass-walled test bench.

Accompanied by a camera team, the 61 year-old made a video of his activity as an engine assembler and the test drives with the SLS AMG Roadster and SLS AMG E-CELL. It will shortly be possible to view the result on his website www.jaylenosgarage.com. This is where Jay Leno regularly reports about his passion for automobiles. While the SLS AMG Roadster will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Main on 13 September 2011, potential customers for the SLS AMG E-CELL will need to be a little more patient: a small series of the electrically powered gullwing will be produced from 2013.

Ola Källenius: “Driving Performance” at first hand for Jay Leno

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Mercedes-AMG GmbH management board: “I am very pleased that such a passionate automobile fan as Jay Leno has found his way to AMG and Affalterbach. We are quite sure that during his test drives with the SLS AMG Roadster and the SLS AMG E-CELL, we were well able to deliver on our brand claim of “Driving Performance”. And Jay Leno also cut a fine figure as an M159 assembly technician in our engine shop!”

Jay Leno delighted after visiting AMG

Jay Leno presents “The Tonight Show” on NBC, the world’s first and most successful late-night show, and also the longest-running entertainment programme on US television. The TV entertainer is a passionate collector and owns more than 200 vehicles, among them 40 Mercedes-Benz models, valuable classics, current sports cars and classic motorcycles. There is also an E 55 AMG in his collection, but after the test drives in the SLS AMG E-CELL and SLS AMG Roadster, Jay Leno can well imagine “that one or two AMG models might soon be added to the line-up. I also have a project under way at home which is now nearing completion. A Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 dating from 1971 is receiving a transplant in the form of a 386 kW (525 hp) AMG 6.3-litre M156 engine!”

Jay Leno summed up his impressions very positively after his one-day visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach: “AMG delivers unbelievable performance – whether by man or machine!”

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe Photos Surface

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new C63 AMG Black Series Coupe in France at a test event at Circuit Paul Ricard

Spy photos and plenty of speculation have been coming in on the Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series Coupe for some time now and finally the first photos of the much anticipated coupe have made their way onto the web.  The C63 AMG Black Series Coupe photos were taken during a test event at Circuit Paul Ricard in one of the garages.  Based on what sources at the event had to say, the new C63 AMG Black Series Coupe doesn’t quite meet the hardcore expectations set by the CLK 63 AMG Black Series.

Sources to Jalopnik had this to say: “What i know right now from my colleague who was there is that its the 6.2 liters NA V8, with 517 ps [510 hp], around 640 NM of torque [472 lb-ft] (it’s nearly the same configuration as in the previous CLS63). Its 20kg [44lbs} lighter than the standard AMG coupe, LSD is standard, it has the MCT gearbox, 4 seats (first time on a Black), a bigger rear spoiler is optional as will be some more ‘track focused’ features (no details yet). On sale mid November in Germany for less than 100K euros, beginning of 2012 for the rest of the world. Don’t know for the importation on your side of the Atlantic.”

Bruno Spengler Wins DTM Race at Norisring

Comments after the race:

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) – Winner:

“That was one of the most difficult races of my career. Even with the safety car out on track, there was still a lot of aquaplaning. The stewards took the right decision to red flag the race. We had a great strategy and my car was superb today: a big thank you to my team for their work. My second win of the season has put me back in the championship lead. That’s a great feeling.”

Jamie Green (AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Second:

“Today was a very difficult race because of the rain. Unfortunately, a fourth win at the Norisring wasn’t possible, but I’m happy with second place. I’m getting to grips with my car better race by race. That’s good for me, for Mercedes-Benz and for the championship.”

Ralf Schumacher (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Sixth:

“I’m quite happy with my sixth place. This is a decent result. I’m really happy that the stewards stopped the race. Otherwise, it could have ended in chaos.”

David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Eighth:

“I’m very happy to have scored my first point of the season. The decision to call off the race was the right one, because we just couldn’t see anything out on track.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Ninth:

“I’m a bit disappointed, because I feel that I could have achieved more starting from sixth. After all, we were quick throughout the weekend. Also, I once again had contact with Edoardo Mortara.”

Renger van der Zande (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Tenth:

“I’m not too displeased with tenth place. It’s always difficult when you start in the middle of the field behind the safety car. My pace was pretty good today – hopefully I can continue this form in the coming races. I overtook four cars today.” Christian Vietoris (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) – Eleventh:

“Conditions today were very chaotic and it was a good thing the race was stopped early. I was stuck in traffic for much of the race and could hardly see a thingbecause of the rain. I’m glad that I was able to finish the race. I didn’t even realise that I crossed the line in eleventh place.”

Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) – 13th:

“The decision to stop the race was absolutely right, because the rain had made the track undriveable. While it was still reasonably dry out there, I had been making good progress. I had held my position and my car was going well at that stage.”

Gary Paffett (AMG Mercedes C THOMAS SABO-Class) – retired:

“At turn three, I turned the steering wheel as usual, but the car didn’t respond – I didn’t make the turn and continued straight on into the wall. It’s too bad because, starting from second place, we could have had a good result today.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Today is 3rd July, so it couldn’t be more appropriate for Bruno Spengler to secure his third victory at the Norisring. We’re leading the championship again and have taken our ninth win in a row here in Nuremberg… it’s fantastic. Jamie Green’s second place only makes our success more complete. Thanks to everyone on the team for a great job. After a one-two in qualifying yesterday, we’ve achieved a one-two in the race as well, and the HWA mechanics also managed the two fastest pit stops today. It was a shame to see Gary retire – we must investigate what happened to the steering before his accident. We’re now all looking forward to seeing the DTM in Munich, for what is sure to be a unique event.”

Mercedes-Benz Drivers Prepare for DTM Round 5 at Norisring

AMG Mercedes C-Class driver Jamie Green is looking to secure his 4th win at Norisring after winning the last 3 DTM races there

AMG Mercedes C-Class driver Jamie Green is looking to secure his fourth win at the July 3rd race at Norisring after winning the last three DTM races at the Norisring (2008, 2009 and 2010). Mercedes-Benz has won the last eight races in Nuremberg and Mercedes-Benz drivers have scored a total of 13 victories on this track.

Comments on the fifth race of the 2011 DTM season from:

Bruno Spengler (27, Canada, Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class):

  • has won twice at the Norisring (2006 and 2007)
  • scored his first DTM victory in Nuremberg at the age of 22 years and 334 days, which makes him one of the youngest winners in DTM history
  • started the 2007 and 2008 races in Nuremberg from pole position

“The Norisring is one of my favourite tracks – I’ve won here twice and had five podium finishes. That’s why I’m thrilled to be racing again in Nuremberg. As always, I’ll be preparing thoroughly for the weekend and going all out to get a good result. In the overall standings, I’m only one point behind Martin Tomczyk. With such a competitive field as we have in this year’s DTM, the situation at the top can turn around very quickly, so I don’t feel under any pressure. Instead, my team and I are focused on the job in hand and we’ll be on the attack again in Nuremberg.”

Ralf Schumacher (35, Germany, Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class):

  • claimed his first DTM pole position and his first DTM fastest lap in last year’s race at the Norisring
  • finished the 2009 race in Nuremberg in sixth position
  • celebrates his 36th birthday on Thursday 30th June in the run-up to the Norisring weekend

“I have fond memories of the Norisring which is always a highlight on the DTM calendar. Obviously, I had hoped for more in last year’s race, but in retrospect it was a good performance to get my first pole position and my first fastest race lap in DTM. So if I carry on making similar progress this year, it will be great. With my two podium finishes at Hockenheim and Spielberg, I’ve shown that I’m comfortable driving the C-Class and that I’ve made the adjustment to DTM racing. After my pole last year at this circuit, I want to be battling it out at the front again in this year’s race.”

Jamie Green (29, England, AMG Mercedes C-Class):

  • has won the last three races at the Norisring (2008, 2009 and 2010)
  • started the 2006 race in Nuremberg from pole position

“I always feel like I’m in my element at the Norisring – and my three wins in the last three seasons would seem to bear that out. This year, I’m no longer in the same C-Class which I won with from 2008 to 2010, but that shouldn’t make a difference. Now I’m aiming to celebrate a victory in my current AMG Mercedes C-Class. In the past eight seasons, a Mercedes-Benz driver has always won in Nuremberg, and that gives me the confidence that we’ll be competitive again this year. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Gary Paffett (30, England, THOMAS SABO AMG Mercedes C-Class):

  • won the 2004 and 2005 races in Nuremberg
  • drove the fastest race lap on the Norisring in 2005
  • won both races in the 2002 German Formula 3 Championship at the Norisring

“In the last race at the Lausitzring, I got closer to the front than in the first three races of 2011. That’s a good sign for the rest of the season because it means we are heading in the right direction. This is a trend we want to continue at the Norisring, where I’m hoping for my first podium finish of the year. I like the street circuit in Nuremberg with its very special characteristics, and I’ve already won there twice. However, my two wins date back to 2004 and 2005, which was quite a while ago, so it would be great if I could add my first win of the 2011 season here. That would also be a nice way of saying ‘thank you’ to my sponsor THOMAS SABO in their home race, as their headquarters are located close to Nuremberg.”

David Coulthard (40, Scotland, Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class):

  • will compete at the Norisring for only the second time
  • has crossed the finish line in all four races of the 2011 season
  • won the Monaco GP in 2000 and 2002 (also staged on a street circuit)

“Even after one and a half seasons in DTM, the series still keeps springing surprises. I’m learning from one weekend to the next, and understanding more and more how to set up the C-Class for optimum performance. In Nuremberg, you especially need good brakes and a good front end to cope with all the cornering. The Norisring is quite unlike any other track we drive on – almost like a DTM version of Monaco. This brings back good memories for me, because after all, I won the Grand Prix there twice. But actually, I can’t think of a circuit that I don’t feel good at. If my team and I can find the right car balance, we’ll hope to reward the fans with a good result.”

Christian Vietoris (22, Germany, Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class):

  • is driving the AMG Mercedes C-Class that won the last three races at the Norisring
  • won the 2008 and 2009 Formula 3 Euro Series races in Nuremberg

“It’s nice to know that Jamie won each of the last three races at the Norisring driving the C-Class car that I’m in now. Of course, that doesn’t automatically mean that I’m set to continue the sequence this season, but maybe driving the legendary Norisring winner will bring me a bit of luck so that I can score my first DTM points. I know the Norisring from my time in the Formula 3 Euro Series – I’ve even won here twice. The track layout looks pretty straightforward, but as a street circuit, it has a bumpy surface, and the race is usually staged in very hot conditions. Anyone aiming to make their mark here needs to be fully focused and in top physical shape. I feel confident on both those points.”

Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“The Norisring is one of the highlights on the DTM calendar. With the sheer quality of the current field, it may well be that the difference between the fastest and slowest lap times in Nuremberg this year is down to less than half a second. We have won at the Norisring eight times and, most recently, Jamie Green triumphed three times in succession, driving the same C-Class. That achievement is unique in the history of the DTM. This time, we’re trying for win number nine, but I’m sure that more than half a dozen of our competitors will be doing their best to prevent us from achieving it. They have a realistic chance of doing so, but that doesn’t diminish our chances at all.”

For those of you attending the race, here are a few tips:

The city: Nuremberg, the home of the legendary Norisring and the second-biggest city of Bavaria, is located in the heart of Franconia. A true must-see is the restored medieval city centre including the mighty ‘Kaiserburg’ (Emperor’s castle). Apropos: here, you also will find the planet’s oldest Bratwurst restaurant, established back in 1313 – the cradle of the famous ‘Nürnberger Bratwurst’ that was already enjoyed by Nuremberg’s most famous son, Albrecht Dürer.

The circuit: The only street circuit of the DTM calendar, built every year extra for the race, the shortest DTM circuit on German soil, a pedestrian tunnel below the circuit allows the spectators to get to the stone grandstand.

Grandstand tip: ‘S-Kurve’: Here, door-to-door battles are guaranteed. View of the chicane and the end of the home straight.

Culture tip: Most definitely, the medieval city centre with the castle, the Albrecht Dürer House as well as the Gothic churches St. Lorenz and St. Sebald represent the highlights of Nuremberg. The cosy atmosphere between frame houses and cobblestone pavement has inspired every visitor of Nuremberg, to date. At the same time, the city also features several culture highlights: the “Germanische National museum”, for instance, is the biggest culture-historic museum in the German speaking countries. The latest information on expositions, events and other places of interest is available in the World Wide Web at: http://go.nuernberg.de. A universal ticket for all the places of interest of Nuremberg as well as the city’s public transport is the ‘Nürnberg Card’.

A culinary must: The ‘Nürnberger Bratwurst’! These sausages that aren’t bigger than a finger are a protected trademark and mustn’t be produced anywhere else than in Nuremberg’s urban area. Everywhere in the historic city centre you will find Bratwurst kitchens that serve this specialty – usually as a dish comprising six sausages and sauerkraut. Nonetheless, you also can get them as triple in a bun. They are a true culinary delight!

For partiers: The major part of Nuremberg’s night life takes place in the historic city centre. There, particularly below the castle and in the ‘Weißgerbergasse’, you will find numerous pubs, bars and clubs. And in summer, enjoying the city ambience in one of the countless beer gardens is a really great experience. For a good overview of Nuremberg’s night life please visit http://go.nuernberg.de in the World Wide Web.

Shopping: Nuremberg has got one of Germany’s biggest and oldest pedestrian areas. Here, in the southern part of the medieval city centre, you can get anything your heart desires. One of Nuremberg’s attractions with a special ambience is the ‘Handwerkerhof’. Surrounded by towers and walls of the medieval city fortification, the ‘Little Town at the King’s Gate’ invites to enjoy an eventful shopping trip. It’s really amazing to see what is going on in the small workshops, shops and alleyways and what a great number of adorable special goods can be admired and purchased, here. Tradition-rich craftsmen such as pewterers, purse makers, pottery makers, gold and silver smiths, stained-glass artists, gingerbread bakers and puppet makers have established their workshops in gorgeous frame houses and demonstrate their skills.

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Renderings

The new Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG will likely have the M157 twin turbo direct injected V8 from the E63 AMG

Seen here is BenzBoost’s take on the future ML63 AMG. We know it is coming as we have posted several groups of spy photos and testing information. Based on their renderings, there are no real surprises in store as the new ML63 AMG will  likely have the M157 twin turbo direct injected V8 from the E63 AMG. If this is the case, it will mean 518 horsepower in standard trim and 550 horsepower with the optional performance package. The ML63 AMG’s curb weight should come in just under 5000 pounds. We expect to see an official reveal of the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this year.
