2013 Mercedes GL63 AMG Debuts at LA Auto Show – Pricing Announced

The GL63 AMG will start at $116,925 (excluding D&D) and goes on-sale during the first quarter of 2013

The high-performance Mercedes GL63 AMG sport utility is making its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, open to the public from November 30 to December 9, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The latest model to join the award-winning newgeneration GL-Class family, the 2013 GL63 AMG features a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 engine that produces a breath-taking 550 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft of torque and a raised top speed of 174mph as well as an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission with the highefficiency ECO start/stop system.

The 2013 GL63 AMG features all the standard equipment of the generously-equipped GL550 as well as standard Driver Assistance Package, Panorama roof, designo interior and surround view camera. The GL63 AMG will start at $116,925 (excluding D&D) and goes on-sale during the first quarter of 2013.

Standard AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC – air suspension, automatic level control and special shock absorber struts with ADS adaptive damping – works with an ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM that provides active stabilization of body lean. This AMG-designed system uses active front and rear stabilizer bars to reduce body lean during cornering.

The new GL63 boasts a special transfer case for the 4MATIC full-time four-wheel-drive system that distributes engine power 40:60 to the front and rear wheels. This rear-biased torque distribution helps provide the SUV with sports car handling as well as impressive allweather traction.

The GL63 AMG driver can choose between two suspension modes at the push of a button – Comfort or Sport. AMG electro-mechanical speed-sensitive steering features variable power assist, depending on the suspension setting. The new steering also helps save fuel, because it uses energy only when the steering wheel is being turned. In addition, the air suspension automatically lowers the body at higher speeds or when in Sport mode to improve aerodynamics and driving stability.

A Distinctive AMG Look

The GL63 AMG is fitted with flared fenders that increase body width by nearly two inches, which make room for 21-inch AMG alloy wheels shod with tires that are nearly 12 inches wide. Its special front apron features large air intakes and a border of LED daytime running lights in the side air intakes. Matte silver trim along the lower fascia and a gloss black grille complete the new look. “V8 BITURBO” badges are mounted on the front fenders, and aluminum-finish running boards under the doors are illuminated. The rear fender flares blend into an AMG rear apron which incorporates eye-catching matte silver chrome trim and two pairs of sport exhaust outlets.

In addition to AMG RIDE CONTROL, AIRMATIC, and the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM, standard safety equipment on the GL63 AMG includes ATTENTION ASSIST, Crosswind Stabilization, a 360-degree camera system and Bi-xenon headlights. Other standard equipment includes KEYLESS-GO, panorama sunroof, power EASY-ENTRY for the rear seats and a power tailgate.

The 2013 GL Lineup

The new high-performance GL63 AMG joins an award-winning GL-Class line of full-size sport utilities that also features the fuel-sipping GL350 BlueTEC (240 hp, 455 lb.-ft.) with a V6 turbodiesel. Between these two contrasting models are the popular GL450 (362 hp, 406 lb.- ft.) and GL550 (429 hp, 516 lb.-ft.), both equipped with new direct injection biturbo V8 engines.

Electromechanical Rack-And-Pinion Steering

All four GL models come with new electrically-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Not only does the electric steering provide built-in speed-dependent power assist, but it also offers fuel savings. The engine no longer has to turn a hydraulic power steering pump, and the new steering only uses electrical power when the wheel is being turned. Mounted ahead of the front wheel center, the steering gear unit has a variable mechanical ratio that operates more directly, or slightly faster, in the center position, which enhances agility and handling.

Active Parking Assist with Surround View Camera

The electric steering assist also makes other innovative systems possible, such as Active Parking Assist (standard on the GL63 AMG and GL550, optional on other GL models), which makes parallel parking a stress-free cinch. Below about 20 mph, a “P” icon appears in the dash to show that an electronic search for a parking space is active, and whenever an adequate-size parking space is found, an arrow appears next to the “P” icon. When reverse is engaged and the driver confirms Active Parking Assist is desired, the system initiates automatic steering as the driver controls acceleration and braking at speeds below seven
mph.

ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM

Standard on the GL63 AMG and optional on other GL models, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM (not to be confused with Active Curve Illumination) is a semi-active suspension that uses electronic sensors, an engine-driven hydraulic pump and electronically controlled hydraulic valves to reduce body lean. Instead of conventional torsional stabilizer bars at the front and rear, the stabilizer bars in the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM are essentially split in the center and connected to rotary hydraulic actuators.

Whenever the vehicle is in a curve, the actuators counteract lateral pitching, reducing the natural tendency of the body to roll and lean in curves. Lower side forces means increased stability and driving pleasure, especially at high speeds, as well as less shifting of occupants.

ATTENTION ASSIST Cautions “Time For A Rest?”

Among the many life-saving features on the GL-Class is the innovative ATTENTION ASSIST system that can alert the driver to the first signs of drowsiness, a factor that causes more than 100,000 accidents a year in the U.S. A steering sensor is coupled to smart software that uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving. Between 50 and 112 mph, the system identifies the erratic steering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy and triggers an audible warning, and a “Time for a Rest?” message with a coffee cup icon appears in the instrument cluster.

More Safety Systems Assist the Driver

Other examples of trailblazing safety innovations include: Active Lane Keeping Assist, which alerts the driver by simulating rumble strip vibration in the steering wheel if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on. It operates at speeds above 37 mph via a system that recognizes lane markings, thanks to a small camera in the windshield and a computer that analyzes the video images. Active Lane Keeping Assist incorporates an intervention feature, in which ESP braking automatically helps correct the car’s course if the driver doesn’t heed the initial warning.

Active Blind Spot Assist monitors both blind spots behind and to the side of the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated with a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings. Active Blind Spot Assist also incorporates the ESP intervention feature, which automatically helps correct the car’s course if the driver doesn’t heed the initial warning.

PRE-SAFE® Gives The GL-Class Reflexes to Protect Occupants

Standard on the new GL, PRE-SAFE® is a revolutionary safety system that can actually sense an impending collision before it happens and take measures to protect occupants during those valuable seconds before impact. The PRE-SAFE system automatically tightens the front seat belts before a possible impact, and, on some models, the front passenger seat moves to a position that can provide better protection. Side windows close to provide better support for the curtain air bags, and if the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof also closes.

The Mercedes-Benz Alabama Plant

Along with the M-Class, the GL-Class sport utility vehicle is produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which began production in 1997 with the first-generation M-Class. The facility is in the midst of a $2.4 billion expansion to prepare for future products. Starting in 2014, the Tuscaloosa plant will also produce the successor generation of the
current C-Class for the North American market.

AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine a byword for thrilling driving dynamics

The uprated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine generating a power output of 464 kW (631 hp) and 635 Newton metres of torque is a byword for thrilling driving dynamics, making the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series the most powerful AMG high-performance automobile with a combustion engine at present. Only the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with a maximum output of 552 kW comes with greater power reserves.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The top speed stands at 315 km/h. The additional 44 kW (60 hp) of power in comparison to the 420 kW (571 hp) offered by the SLS AMG has been achieved by the following measures:

  • Increase in maximum engine speed from 7200 to 8000 rpm
  • Fully revised high-speed valve train with modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry and optimised bucket tappets featuring a special coating which is otherwise exclusive to racing vehicles
  • Modification of the intake air ducting: derestriction and adaptation to the new maximum engine speed
  • Adaptation of the engine application and increase in peak pressure

The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have further optimised the crank assembly in the interests of optimum stability in tough racing use. The measures carried out here include modified oil bores in the crankshaft, new crankshaft bearings, a new oil pump and high-strength screwed connections for the conrods. The entire water and oil cooling system for the engine and transmission has also undergone further optimisation. The AMG V8 engine in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is additionally provided with a special support system. A gas-filled strut braces the eight-cylinder engine on the body, effectively eliminating undesired load change reactions in highly dynamic driving on the race track. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is hand-built at the AMG hand-finishing section in Affalterbach, according to the philosophy “one man, one engine”. This hand-made quality is confirmed by the black AMG engine badge bearing the responsible engine fitter’s signature which is a hallmark of the Black Series models.

The key data at a glance:

SLS AMG Coupé Black Series

Output 464 kW (631 hp) at 7400 rpm
Max. torque 635 Nm at 5500 rpm
Maximum engine speed 8000 rpm
Engine weight (dry) 205 kg
Fuel consumption, NEDC combined 13.7 l/100 km
CO2 emissions 321 g/km
Efficiency class G
Acceleration 0-100 km/h 3.6 s
Top speed 315 km/h

The eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine installed as a front mid-engine behind the front axle boasts racing car-style response and livelier than ever revving ability. The powerful AMG V8 engine’s race track aspirations are also apparent in its sound: the newly designed AMG sports exhaust system, produced in titanium for the first time, features distinctive centre and rear mufflers which provide for a more powerful and even more striking engine sound. The switch from steel to titanium has spawned substantial weight savings: at just under 17 kilograms, the new AMG sports exhaust system is around 13 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The new system features the performance-enhancing fan-type exhaust pipes which have been in use to date.

Systematic application of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy

Lightweight at its core: with a kerb weight of 1550 kilograms (DIN), the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is not only 70 kilograms lighter than the SLS AMG, but also attains the best power/weight ratio of all AMG Black Series vehicles to date by far. The figure of 2.45 kg/hp will also bear up to comparison in the super sports car scene. Such a ratio is made possible by systematic application of the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy. Numerous body elements, such as the bonnet, the rear panel behind the AMG sports bucket seats, the diagonal braces on the underbody and the torque tube between engine and transmission consist entirely of the motorsport material carbon fibre (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic). In contrast to its 26.6-kilogram counterpart with sand-cast aluminium housing, the carbon-fibre torque tube weighs only 13.3 kilograms. As previously, power transmission between the engine and the dual clutch transmission (transaxle principle) which is flange-mounted on the rear axle is effected by means of a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CRP) drive shaft weighing only 4.7 kilograms. A number of parts on the aluminium spaceframe have also been replaced by CRP components. A lithium-ion battery which is used in place of the conventional starter battery saves a further eight kilograms.

Dual clutch transmission for even more emotional dynamism

The overall power transmission system is also a major contributory factor to the outstanding driving dynamics of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is installed ten millimetres lower in order to achieve a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and is braced against the body by gas-filled struts in order to avoid stress cycles. The dual clutch transmission features four driving modes (C, S, S+ and M). “Sport plus” and “Manual” in particular provide for markedly sportier performance than with the SLS AMG and SLS AMG GT models. In addition to an increase in shifting speed, the reduced response time to shift commands from the driver and the shifting hardness provide for pure dynamism.

An even more thrilling feature is the automatic double-declutching function during downshifting: the throttle blips when shifting gear are more pronounced and more strikingly audible than ever, due to the AMG titanium sports exhaust system. There is also a new temporary M mode. In C, S or S+ mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the “up” or “down” shift paddle once. In temporary M mode the driver experiences the dynamism and performance of gear-shifting in manual mode in all of the automatic driving programmes, with automatic up- and down-shifting into the bargain. This allows the driver to devote his full attention to the vehicle’s impressive performance.

New, electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock

A newly developed, electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock with a shorter rear-axle ratio replaces the mechanical variant; it is integrated in the compact transmission housing. This system operates with a variable locking effect in acceleration and deceleration mode; in addition, the electronics respond more sensitively than to date, enabling excellent traction for the driven wheels at all friction levels. The electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock also benefits driving safety: in slaloms or when changing lane at high speeds the system has a stabilising effect, as it is able to attenuate the vehicle’s yaw rate around its vertical axis. The standard-fit 3-stage ESP® system featuring the functions “ESP ON”, “ESP SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” is precision-tuned to the electronic AMG rear-axle differential lock. The same applies to the RACE START function, which provides for perfect traction when accelerating from a standing start in conjunction with the electronic differential lock.

AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension and sports tyres

The chassis and suspension of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series are also new. The basic layout with double wishbones all-round in aluminium remains unchanged, but barely a component has gone untouched in the interests of much enhanced race track performance.

The new developments in detail:

  • AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension with tauter basic tuning and electronically controlled two-stage damping (Sport, Sport +) for individual adjustment to the preferred personal driving style
  • Coil-over spring retainers to enable adjustment of wheel loads for personal race track set-ups
  • Elastokinematics 50 / 42% more rigid (front/rear axle) for greater stability in fast double bends
  • Track width increased by 20 / 24 millimetres (front/rear axle) for added grip in fast bends
  • New wheel carriers on front axle and new front stabiliser tuning for added grip, reduced roll angle in fast cornering
  • AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels, in particularly light forged design with optimised strength, painted matt black with high-sheen finish, dimensions: 10×19 at fron; 12×20 at rear. Weight saving: 4.0 kilograms
  • Newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sports tyres. Dimensions 275/35 R 19 at front and 325/30 R 20 at rear, for added grip and sporty cornering limit
  • AMG speed-sensitive steering with newly defined power steering characteristic for optimum steering precision and outstanding control of the vehicle

AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system as standard

The brake system of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series boasts excellent deceleration performance and outstanding stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system comes as standard. The ceramic brake discs measuring 402 x 39 millimetres at the front and 360 x 32 millimetres at the rear feature increased hardness for enhanced thermal stability, accompanied by a weight reduction of around 40 percent. As a result of the reduced unsprung masses, they optimise both comfort and grip. The reduced rotating masses on the front axle provide for more direct steering response. Weight savings with the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system compared to a conventional steel/aluminium brake system: 16 kilograms.

Design inspired by the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car

The design of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series derives a special fascination from its similarity to the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car. The gull-wing racing car developed in accordance with FIA GT3 rules has quickly become established as a serious contender among the super sports car elite. In the 2012 motorsport season the SLS AMG GT3 is competing in more than 15 series on four continents. The triple victory in the 24-hour Dubai race in January 2012, three driver and team titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship, the ADAC GT Masters and the FIA GT3 World Championship along with numerous places on the podium at various short-distance, 4- and 6‑hour races demonstrate the SLS AMG GT3’s sporty performance in impressive style. To date, the car has notched up 37 victories in the 2012 season (as per 28 October 2012).

Wide flared wings with an added width of 13 mm (front) and 26 mm (rear) on each side create the necessary space for the 275 mm and 325 mm sports tyres. Darkened headlamps and black surrounds for the rear lights provide the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series with a muscular and aggressive look. The vehicle’s aerodynamic balance is optimised by the front apron and rear apron with diffusor along with side sill panels in Black Series-specific design featuring carbon fibre-reinforced plastic front splitter, carbon inserts in the side sills and the rear apron made of carbon fibre. The enlarged air intakes with carbon-fibre flics additionally ensure an optimum air inflow into the cooling modules at the front.

As on the SLS AMG GT3, the carbon-fibre bonnet features a central air outlet. Apart from effectively discharging the engine heat, this outlet also increases downforce at the front axle and improves the Cd value. The wing-like cross-fin and the star recess in the radiator grille are finished in high-gloss black to match the exterior mirrors and the fins on the bonnet. The carbon-fibre insert on the sides with air outlet and a black fin is also reminiscent of the GT3; this feature also helps to reduce the temperature level in the engine compartment. The upshot is maximum stability, even in tough race track use.

Matt black AMG forged wheels in Black Series-specific design

A striking feature on the sides is the attractive integration of the side skirts, which combine with the side feature line in appealing fashion. The carbon elements fitted along the bottom at the sides continue the line of the carbon-fibre front splitter along to the rear. AMG forged wheels in a series-specific 10‑spoke design, painted in matt black with a high sheen finish, provide glimpses of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system. AMG forged wheels in matt black with high-sheen rim flange are alternatively available.

The rear of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series presents a brawny appearance on a par with that of the front end. The wide wings and the striking rear diffusor are the predominant features here. The diffusor extends beyond the profile of the rear apron and produces additional downforce at the rear axle. This results in greater driving stability at high speeds. Visible air openings behind black grilles serve to control the dischrage of hot air in the area of the AMG titanium sports exhaust system. The two sets of twin chrome tailpipes with a square cross-section provide a visual demonstration of the gull-wing super sports car’s power and dynamism – an impression that is backed up by a corresponding sound. The exclusive AMG logo with contrasting Black Series lettering in black adds a discreet yet striking touch at the top right of the boot lid.

AMG Aerodynamics package with carbon-fibre components

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series can be upgraded with the optional AMG Aerodynamics package. This package features a fixed, adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil in the style of the SLS AMG GT3 in place of the standard-fit aerofoil which extends automatically at speeds of over 120 km/h. The rear aerofoil is braced by aluminium elements on a special insert on the boot lid and provides for even greater negative lift force on the rear axle – not least of all as a result of the Gurney flap, named after its inventor, Dan Gurney, a former racing driver, designer and team owner. This eight millimetre-high spoiler lip fitted to the rear aerofoil at an angle of 90 degrees results in a further increase in downforce without significantly increasing drag. The rear aerofoil is complemented by additional carbon-fibre flics on the front apron which further reduce downforce at the front axle, as opposed to the more inward-lying standard-fit carbon-fibre flics which serve to optimise the inflow of air into the cooling modules.

The optionally available expressive colour AMG solar beam is exclusive to the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series. Six other exterior paint finishes from the SLS AMG range are available, including the matt paint designo magno alanite grey.

Sporty, functional interior exuding high quality

A functional, sporty racing-car atmosphere is prevalent inside the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, with high-quality materials demonstrating precision workmanship and exquisitely designed details. There is a choice of two colour variants: Alcantara® black or Alcantara® black/red. With the two-tone variant, the door centre panels and the applications on the centre console and above the glove compartment are finished in red. The AMG Performance steering wheel with flattened bottom rim section features Alcantara® all round for a good grip. In the top section the steering wheel features a sporty red 12 o’clock marking. The real metal bezel features a high-gloss black paint finish to match the high-gloss black surrounds of the air vents. A particularly high-quality and exclusive Black Series detail is the so-called “3D seam” which runs horizontally along the dashboard: a fine Alcantara® strip in anthracite features across the entire width of the leather covering. Red contrasting stitching in the leather lend an accomplished finish to the 3D seam, underscoring the hand-crafted character.

The combination of designo leather and Alcantara® features throughout the interior – on the bottom section of the dashboard, for example, on the door centre panels and on the AMG sports bucket seats, whose centre sections are covered with Alcantara®. Embossed AMG emblems on the head restraints are further exclusive eye-catchers. In addition to providing first-class lateral support at high cornering speeds, the AMG sports bucket seats are also 15 kilograms lighter than the standard AMG sports seats.

The absence of the COMAND APS multimedia system reduces the vehicle’s weight by an additional six kilograms as a further demonstration of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series’ uncompromisingly purist character. In place of the screen between the air vents, a carbon-fibre trim element exudes an authentic racing atmosphere. COMAND APS is optionally available ex-factory. The vehicle’s occupants will also discover the motorsport material carbon fibre on the entire centre console with the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Bold highlights are added by red seat belts and red contrasting stitching on the AMG sports bucket seats, the centre console, the upper and lower section of the dashboard and the door panelling. The floor mats similarly feature red edging.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

A highlight among the optional equipment and appointments is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system with Dolby Digital 5.1 enables an exclusive music experience of the very highest standard. This is made possible by a 1000 W amplifier and 11 loudspeakers in conjunction with precise distribution of the music signals by the sound processor according to the selectable seat positions – driver, co-driver or central. The DSP digital sound processor additionally enables the user to switch between the high-end studio sound (“Reference”) and a surround sound option. All functions are controlled via COMAND APS (optional item) in a special Bang & Olufsen menu. The illuminated 50 W lens tweeters are a special highlight on the dashboard. The 250 W subwoofer is accommodated in the rear shelf. High-quality loudspeaker covers sporting the Bang & Olufsen logo indicate the high-end system’s exclusive character.

Further individualisation options are also available (selection):

GAD Tuned CLS63 AMG

GAD tuned the Mercedes CLS63 AMG to output a whopping 803-hp for a top speed of 186 mph

The Mercedes CLS63 AMG is one of the most popular cars for tuners – the main reason its 5.5 liter bi-turbo V8 engine that can be tuned to output massive power as well as its exterior beauty.  In the recent past, we’ve seen CLS63 AMG by Kicherer, Vorsteiner,  SR Auto Group, Vitt, Mansory and Wald to name a few.

The latest tuner to jump on the CLS63 AMG bandwagon is GAD with their 803hp monster.

GAD started out with a standard CLS63 AMG, which already has 557 hp and 800 Nm of torque , enough for most driver’s with dreams of speed. They  then treated the CLS to new turbochargers that our from  GAD, enhanced the cooling system, optimized manifolds, installed a full sport exhaust system with downpipe, race catalysts and valved mufflers.  And, to top it all off, GAD modified the software for new boost pressure and ignition timing data.

All of this work resulted in the AMG’s M157 V8 outputting a whopping 803 hp and 1,150 Nm of torque.  Meaning, the CLS63 can go past 186 mph, without a speed limiter.

On the exterior, the GAD CLS63 features gunmetal wheels, from HRE, grille and side mirrors.

The 2014 Mercedes C63 AMG will use the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, like the one used by nearly the entire AMG family

By 2020, Mercedes will be the best-selling and most profitable luxury-car brand, this is the hope of Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche.  With all the new models we’ve been seeing lately, they are well on their way to take the lead or at minimum, close the gap with BMW and Audi.

In 2013 we will likely see the unveiling of the new CLA compact sedan based on the A-Cass, the new C-Class, facelifted E-Class and probably the S-Class, which will have five variants, including a coupe and a cabriolet.

Today, the prototype for the next generation C-Class AMG was photographed by some very stealthy spy photogs. The new C-Class will make a radical departure from the styling of the current model, will be lighter and packed with new safety technology. This will serve as an ideal platform to take the fight to the BMW M3 and Audi RS4 and RS5.

Instead of continuing with the 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8, they will use the new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8, like the one used by nearly the entire AMG family. There are currently four states of output for this engine. In the E63 AMG and CLS63 AMG, this means 525 hp in base configuration, which is what the C63 AMG will likely make now. However, it’s not inconceivable that a new lower output version with about 500 hp will be engineered.

According to Autoevolution, the ‘63’ name will be dropped, and the fast sedan will actually be called the C55 AMG. This is not that strange if AMG were to make two versions, like with the G-Class and SL-Class but we’ll wait to see.

Mercedes A45 AMG Crashes at Nürburgring

The A45 AMG's airbags were also deployed and the driver was not injured and walked away from the car on his own

In order to make a hatchback that can handle the Nürburgring, Mercedes handed the A-Class over to their AMG division. Adding a more rigid suspension, massive wheels and a body kit, all propelled by a new engine that utilizes F1 technology and a Heldex all-wheel drive system.

The new Mercedes A45 AMG has been at the Nürburgring undergoing testing and as you can see from the photos captured by a spy photographer, the testing didn’t quite go as planned.

The Mercedes A 45 AMG prototype, with its new 330bhp 2.0-litre turbo engine and all-wheel-drive system with AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed dual clutch transmission, crashed on the Nordschleife in a very high speed part of the ring. According to eyewitnesses, the car was doing over 100 mph, when it came out of the Fuchsröhre, and then crashed into the right guardrail. The front end was heavily damaged, as were parts of the rear and the front window. The airbags were also deployed, which is probably a large part of why the driver was not injured and walked away from the car on his own.

The Mercedes A 45 AMG is scheduled for its public debut in early 2013.  Also interesting to note is that one of the emergency vehicles is a Dodge, strange considering the Nürburgring’s location.  Thanks to our good friend Andrus and GMotors.co.uk for the tip.

2013 Mercedes GL63 AMG Celebrates World Premiere in Moscow

The GL 63 AMG manages the 0 to 63 mph sprint in 4.9 seconds and its electronically limited top speed is 155 mph

With a top speed of 155 mph, a 0-62 sprint time of 4.9 seconds, 760 Nm max torque and around 19 miles per gallon, the 2013 GL63 will leave its drivers wanting for nothing.  Add to that its masculine exterior with perfect ergonomics and immaculate attention to detail on the inside and Mercedes may have created the ideal SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz official press conference opened the press day at the Moscow International Automobile Salon 2012: The brand new Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG luxury off-roader, which celebrates its world premiere in Moscow, was presented to numerous press representatives. The new high-performance SUV combines compelling technologies with an extensive range of standard equipment and pure ride comfort for up to seven passengers. Effortless superiority comes courtesy of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation provides high-level driving dynamics and the comfort one would expect from the Mercedes brand.

“With the new GL 63 AMG, our all-wheel drive lineup is now complete. In addition to the ML 63 AMG all-rounder and the recently unveiled, characterful G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models, the GL 63 AMG places particular emphasis on dynamism and style. Combining the first-rate comfort of the S-Class with the performance of an AMG sports saloon, the GL 63 AMG is unique in its segment”, according to Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, who came to Moscow to celebrate the world premiere of the GL 63 AMG. For AMG, the Mercedes-Benz performance brand, the Russian market is very important. With its growth potential, it is a major element in the ambitious future strategy entitled “AMG Performance 50”, leading up to the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Ola Källenius: “AMG has made a fantastic start to this year. We racked up growth of 30 percent for the first half of this year. It was the best six months in our company history. And Russia was a major driver of that sustainable growth.”

The new GL 63 AMG: Luxury and refinement, striking design, maximum safety and dynamism

Creating the perfect basis for characteristic AMG performance and a superior driving experience: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine. A look at the technical data provides some powerful arguments. Peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm result in first-class performance. The GL 63 AMG manages the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). NEDC fuel consumption comes in at 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres (288 g CO2/km).

The AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine features an innovative, high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design with variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

The key data at a glance:

GL 63 AMG
Displacement 5461 cc
Bore x stroke 98.0 x 90.5 mm
Compression ratio 10.0:1
Output 410 kW (557 hp) at 5250-5750 rpm
Max. torque 760 Nm at 2000-5000 rpm
Engine weight (dry) 204 kg
Fuel consumption, NEDC combined 12.3 l/100 km
CO2 emissions 288 g/km
Acceleration 0-100 km/h 4.9 s
Top speed 250 km/h*

Power is transmitted to all four permanently driven wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill. “C” also stands for a gentle accelerator and transmission characteristic with early gear changes; start-up generally takes place in second gear here. A green “ECO” symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates to the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving programmes the ECO start/stop function is inactive and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility with more spontaneous responses. A brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load additionally provides for shorter shift times and an acoustic experience.

Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics

To enhance efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission incorporates a fuel-economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system. Friction loss-minimised axle gears, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, an optimised belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps also help to reduce fuel consumption.

Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 in the interests of dynamic handling. As if that were not enough, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with AIRMATIC package – consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) – is combined with the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard and is specific to AMG, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body’s roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The GL 63 AMG driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three suspension modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”. The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.

The AMG-specific elastokinematics at the front axle and the more robustly designed rear axle stabiliser bar are responsible for improved steering precision. The enhanced drive train delivers the best possible power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system which features as standard provides for optimised grip when friction coefficients vary.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering features variable power assistance which responds in accordance with the chosen suspension mode. It also helps to save fuel, as the steering assist function only requires energy when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. The GL 63 AMG comes as standard with 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in format 10 x 21, painted titanium grey and with a high-sheen finish, fitted with tyres in size 295/40 R 21. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance with ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round in size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear).

Performance-oriented design with masculine features

Striking, masculine, unmistakeable: these attributes describe the design of the GL 63 AMG. Mercedes-AMG has enhanced the main stylistic features of the new GL – powerful dynamism and sporty elegance – using specific elements that emphasise the top V8 model’s exceptional performance. The typically upright GL radiator grille with its central Mercedes star is adorned with high-gloss slats painted in black. AMG styling elements include the front apron with its large openings that ensure an effective air flow for the cooling modules. The bottom air intake takes the form of a typical AMG stylised “A” with a gap under the fine black fin through which air can flow optimally to the cooling modules – the perfect blend of design and high-tech. The trim insert in matt silver chrome installed under it creates a sense of width and coordinates optimally with the borders of the LED daytime running lamps in the side air openings.

The AMG front apron elegantly merges into the exclusive wheel-arch flaring. In order to accommodate the large 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG light-alloy wheels with the wide-base 295 tyres, the flaring widens the vehicle by 22 millimetres on each side. From the side, observers will notice the V8 BITURBO logos on the wings and illuminated running boards with an aluminium finish. The rear wheel-arch flaring blends into the AMG rear apron which is again adorned with a striking trim insert in matt silver chrome and the suggestion of black air openings. Creating both a visual and acoustic highlight are the two chrome-plated, exposed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Exclusivity and dynamism dominate in the interior

Great attention to detail, excellent ergonomics and a generous amount of space available – exclusivity and dynamism also dominate in the interior of the GL 63 AMG. All seven seats in the high-performance SUV are covered in high-quality leather, as is the centre armrest. Electrically adjustable AMG sports seats feature double topstitching in a contrasting colour and AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests. The dashboard, armrests and door panelling come in ARTICO man-made leather with double topstitching. As part of the optional designo Exclusive package, these components can be covered in high-quality designo leather.

The AMG Performance 4-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather in the grip area, flattened bottom section on the steering wheel rim and aluminium shift paddles ensures optimal vehicle control. Four round instruments on the AMG instrument cluster provide the driver with information. The central colour TFT monitor incorporates the AMG welcome logo and AMG main menu.

New Mercedes S63 AMG Spied Testing

Mercedes-Benz engineers are believed to have been testing the S63 AMG with AMG-style double exhaust

Thanks to our friends at GMotors, we have the latest round of S-Class Spy photos.  Mercedes engineers have been testing the new S-Class for quite a while and this time around, the photogs believe it is the Mercedes S63 AMG, featuring the  new AMG-style squared double exhaust outlets they caught.

Besides the AMG-style squared double exhaust outlets, noticeable features include larger brake discs, bigger air intakes and an updated new bumpers, when compared to the standard S-Class.

Power is expected to come from the recently introduced M157 twin-turbo 5.5-litre engine that produces up to 571bhp.

Which Would You Rather – the SL63 AMG or the SL65 AMG

Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12, there’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer

Choice is good and that’s why when it comes to AMG versions of the SL-Class, you have two: the SL63 AMG and the SL65 AMG. But which one would you choose? Do you go with the tail-wagging SL63 and its hand-built biturbo V-8, or is the blunt force of the SL65’s hand-built biturbo V-12 more your style?

Boasting a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 and twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 respectively, there’s really no question that either car is an impressive performer.

The SL63 AMG with the new 5.5-liter direct-injection biturbo AMG V8 (530 hp, 590 lb-ft) with ECO Start/Stop and AMG 7-speed MCT with 4 shift modes and RACESTART function. Standard AMG DRL’s, twin-lamella grille, and trunk spoiler. Optional Performance Package yields 557hp, 664 lb-ft.

Then you have the Mercedes SL65 AMG with the high-performance 6.0-liter V12 model (621hp, 738lb-ft) now features 7-speed automatic transmission.

In the video below we get to see both of the venerable Benzes rocketing around two-lane roads, at times simultaneously. The drivers overtake each other in what could possibly be the world’s classiest game of leap frog before the clip fades away to deliver basic engine specs.

Dartz Nagel Dakar to Source AMG Engine

The Nagel Dakar comes from the Latvian manufacturer that once brought us the exceptionally unique armored Prombron

From the Latvian car manufacturer that once brought us the Prombron and subsequent variants of arguably one of the most unique armored cars in the world.  If you are unfamiliar with Dartz, they are a privately held Latvian-based corporation, that designs, manufactures, and sells high performance armored vehicles. Dartz is based out of a renovated, former Russo-Balt factory in Riga, Latvia, where they built their previous model, the Prombron.  Dartz and the Prombron received notoriety, impart because it was originally available in upholstered leather made from the foreskin of whale penises.

Now, Dartz is back with yet another creation: the Nagel Dakar. If the name strikes a bell, it is because the Nagel Dakar is named after Russian racing driver Andrew Nagel, the second place finisher at the 1912 Monte Carlo Rally.

Just like the Prombron, Dartz is wasting little time building up the Nagel Dakar, even going to the curious length of introducing it under a new class of cars it’s calling B.N.U.D.S.

What is B.N.U.D.S.

Bespoke – Every car is made specially for the customer. You can even decide what it looks like externally.

Noble – Dartz say they’re one of the oldest car names.

Urban – as it’s claimed to have an excellent ride for the city. As we found out when we gave a Dictator a lift, this means going over anything that’s in your way.

Desert – If you live in the desert, that’s fine. Dartz says the car works great there too.

Safety – Because of the use of a titanium tubular farme and the company’s previous exploits into bulletproofing.

Exterior and Interior

It’s pretty safe to say that the Nagel Dakar will be built along the same principles of the Prombon. The body will feature a titanium tubular frame chassis that will be standard for base models of the vehicle. If that material is a little too simpleton for your liking, the Latvian-based company can offer a Carbon Kevlar chassis. Quite a nice upgrade, right?

In all, the Nagel Dakar measures 4,620 mm in length for the two-door version and 4,920 mm for the four-door variant. The vehicle is also 2,000 mm wide, 1,700 mm high with a 250 mm clearance, and has a wheelbase of 2,910 mm for the two-door and 3,210 mm for the four-door.

No immediate details have been revealed about the interior, but expect Dartz to offer a customizable interior that includes a plethora of “unique” materials.

Performance

The Nagel Dakar will be powered by an AMG-sourced 5.5-liter bi-turbocharged V8 engine that produces in excess of 650 horsepower and 626 lb/ft of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed double-clutch transmission and is being pegged at possessing a top speed of 155 mph.

Pricing

Dartz’s sales plan for the Nagel Dakar will include 10 units sold in 2013, followed by 20 units for 2014. From 2015-2017 that number doubles to 40 units per year. As for pricing, the automaker has priced the car from €250,000 – €300,000 for the base model, which converts to around $390,000 – $468,000. Source: TopSpeed.

2013 Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake Official Release

The market launches of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake and the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake "Edition 1" will commence in October 2012

Last week we brought you the first glimpse of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, and as promised, we now have the complete details and full photo gallery for you.  Offering the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a power output range of from 386 kW (525 hp) to 410 kW (557 hp) and a luggage compartment with a volume of up to 1550 liters, there isn’t much more you could ask for in a wagon.   Also, in addition to the optional extras from the AMG Performance Studio that enhance the driving dynamics, another unique highlight of the AMG Shooting Brake is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. And for those looking for something extra special, there is the limited-time CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake “Edition 1” that offers an additional 24 kW (32 hp) of power and 100 Nm of torque as well as some particularly exclusive appointment features.

Mercedes-AMG is showing courage and with the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is presenting a performance trendsetter in a new market segment. The CLS 55 AMG already had no direct competitors back in 2004. The first four-door performance Coupé inspired other automotive manufacturers and over the years has come to be copied many times. The successor model presented in 2006, the CLS 63 AMG with an AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, and the current CLS 63 AMG with the 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine available since 2011, have consistently continued this strategy.

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “After the successes of the CLS 55 AMG and CLS 63 AMG, with the new CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake we are consistently pursuing the philosophy of offering our customers unrivalled, exciting high-performance cars. The CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is establishing a completely new, small and select niche sector, and is expected to delight new customers just as much as it will existing AMG enthusiasts. The combination of performance, style and usability is unique.”

AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine producing up to 410 kW (557 hp)

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine impresses with a combination of direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion, piezo injectors, biturbocharging, air/water intercooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.

The eight-cylinder engine is the embodiment of pure dynamism and high efficiency: offering power output and torque levels of 386 kW (525 hp) and 700 Nm respectively, the effortless superiority of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake can be enjoyed by the driver over every single kilometre. In conjunction with the Edition 1 these figures are pushed to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm. Both variants offer driving performance of the highest calibre: accelerating from zero to 100 km/h takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively, and the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Effortlessly superior power delivery, low fuel consumption

Despite offering dynamism similar to that of a sports car, the consumption figures are maintained at a low level. Fuel consumption of 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC) corresponds to a CO2 output of 235 g/km and is identical for both power units. The driving experience in the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake is characterised by high levels of agility through all engine speed ranges. The absolutely effortlessly superior power delivery can also be heard by the driver too: the sports exhaust system with chrome twin tailpipes emits a sonorous eight-cylinder engine sound typical of AMG.

The key data at a glance:

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission – individual and flexible

The AMG eight-cylinder engine is not the only highlight – the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission also boasts exciting levels of performance and efficiency. Equipped with four individual transmission modes as well as automatic double declutching and RACE START functions, its power delivery is characterised by responsiveness and maximum variability. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is always enabled and switches the eight-cylinder engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill. In “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) transmission modes, the engine and transmission are significantly more responsive: short, precisely defined interruptions of ignition and injection result in faster gear changes under full load.

The suspension, steering and braking system of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake complement the high-tech drive system perfectly. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle, as well as automatic level control, is enhanced further by an electronically controlled damping system; it automatically adjusts the damping characteristics depending on the driving conditions and reduces the roll angle of the body. The effect of this is lightning-fast adjustment between optimum driving comfort and the best possible agility. The driver can switch between the three suspension modes of “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus” at the press of a button. The 3-stage -ESP® with SPORT Handling mode also enables three individual control strategies to be selected at the press of a button.

The AMG-specific front and rear axles with greater negative camber and optimised elastokinematics help to provide more stability at higher cornering speeds as well as better contact with the road. The front axle, with a track width which is 56 mm wider, is the optimum match for the electromechanical AMG sports parameter steering. It features a more direct ratio, variable power assistance which adapts according to the suspension mode, and also contributes towards reducing fuel consumption since the steering assistance system only draws power when the vehicle is actually being steered.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system

Perfect deceleration even when driving extremely briskly is provided by the AMG high-performance braking system with 360 mm ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round. Particularly resistant, motorsports-tested composite technology is used on the front axle. The optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system with yet larger brake discs and specially painted brake callipers with “AMG Carbon Ceramic” lettering ensures an even higher level of braking performance as well as lower unsprung masses. Good contact with the road, meanwhile, comes courtesy of the titanium grey-painted, high-sheen AMG light-alloy wheels featuring a triple-spoke design and fitted with 255/35 R 19 tyres on the front and 285/30 R 19 tyres on the rear.

Distinctive, sporty and dominant: the sensational design

The excitingly elegant design idiom of a sensational vehicle design is combined in the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake with a distinctly sporty sense of dominance. Its high levels of performance are visibly expressed in such elements as the powerful AMG front apron with cross strut finished in high-gloss black, the AMG radiator grille with single slat and the AMG-specific design of the bonnet.

Further dynamic highlights also include the original, broader front wings with “V8 BITURBO” lettering, the AMG-specific rear apron with diffuser look and the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes. High-performance LED headlamps including Intelligent Light System and adaptive Highbeam Assist are fitted as standard.

Extensive appointments, exclusive atmosphere

From the quality of materials and workmanship through to the exclusive atmosphere, the interior of the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake meets the very highest of standards. AMG sports seats in nappa leather with multicontour seat and memory functions, AMG black piano lacquer trim and the AMG-specific analogue clock featuring an IWC design all help to create a unique aura. The driver is also kept perfectly and fully informed too thanks to the AMG instrument cluster with AMG main menu including RACETIMER and AMG start-up screen.

The transmission modes, suspension setup, ESP® functions and the AMG program can all be configured via the AMG DRIVE UNIT with E-SELECT selector lever – a special feature exclusive to AMG – which is integrated into the centre console and angled towards the driver. Visually striking, ergonomic and reassuringly tactile: the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather features a three-spoke design with flattened top and bottom sections, a special shape, perforated leather finish and silver coloured aluminium shift paddles. A newly introduced feature on all AMG vehicles is the chrome-look electronic key with AMG emblem.

Designo wooden luggage compartment floor in American cherry

A highlight among the extensive range of optional extras is the designo wooden luggage compartment floor. This luggage compartment floor is made of open-pore American cherry wood, a decorative fine wood traditionally used in superior interior design work, high-quality furniture and exclusive ship outfitting applications. Selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed together by hand in cross-bonded layers to achieve high dimensional stability. The blanks are milled into their precise shape using a CNC machine, and the surfaces sanded to a smooth finish, waterproofed and oiled to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.

Inlaid work using darker smoked oak, precisely cut into three millimetre strips using laser technology, helps to enhance the design of the wooden floor. The aluminium rails, manufactured using an extrusion moulding process, have a brushed finish as well as rubber inserts, and not only help to protect the wooden floor but also feature anti-slip properties.

Additional optional extras from designo include:

  • designo metallic paint finish available in three colours
  • designo magno paint finish available in two colours
  • designo leather available in ten colours
  • designo roof lining in DINAMICA microfibre, available in three colours

2013 Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake First Photo and Video

The first photo and video of the 2013 Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, as well as complete details

The first photo and video of the Mercedes CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, as well as complete details, have made their way to the web. This will more than likely mean that we will have a complete photo gallery for you direct from Mercedes shortly.

As we had previously speculated, the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake takes on the same figures as its four-door coupe sibling.  The shooting brake is propelled by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 which produces 557 PS (410 kW / 550 bhp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque with the AMG Performance package while the standard engine configuration is rated at 525 PS (386 kW / 518 bhp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Running 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed that is electronically limited to 155 mph, you can’t ask for much more from a souped up station wagon. The engine of the high-performance CLS63 Shooting Brake is mated to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission.

For lower fuel consumption, Mercedes equipped the shooting brake with ECO Start-Stop function and is rated to 14.0 liters / 100 km fuel consumption in the city, with a 7.8 liters / 100 km fuel economy on the highway and with 10.1 liters / 100 km in the combined cycle. The CO2 emissions are rated at 235 g/km.

We will no doubt have a complete photo gallery and full press release for you shortly, but for now enjoy the video courtesy of our good German friends at MB Passion.

AMG Retro Collection Helps Celebrate 45 Year Anniversary

Commemorate AMG's 45th Anniversary in 1970's style with the AMG Retro Edition Collection from Mercedes-Benz Accessories

On June 1, 1967, Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher teamed up to found AMG Motorenbau und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development, Ltd.). In 1971 the company became famous overnight with a second place finish at the the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps with the 300 SEL 6.8 red touring car with the start number 35.

Both of these events are commemorated with 1970’s style in the AMG Retro Edition from Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH, which you can see in the photo gallery below and which are now available from Mercedes’ partners and the online shop.

These historic dates are featured on the classic white polo shirt made from 100% cotton. Discreet red highlighting on the collar, inner button placket and on the neck band, and a red stripe on the sleeve cuffs also commemorate the first AMG racing car, as do the badges on the sleeves showing the date 1971 and the number 35. The first AMG logo is printed in silver in 3D on the left-hand side of the chest, with the words “Founded 1967” on the back of the neck. Even the buttons bear the AMG logo. The men’s polo shirt is available in sizes S to XXL. To go with the polo shirt there is a cap showing the early version of the AMG logo, the badges “1971” and “35”, and the words “Founded 1967”.

A fine leather collection is available made from vintage-look cognac-coloured calfskin, and the items in this collection are sure to become the user’s everyday style accessories. The collection includes a weekend travel bag (dimensions: 47 x 30 x 25 cm) with sturdy handles, dark-brown cotton lining and base feet, a wallet and a belt. All of these items feature the same exceptional high-quality leather workmanship, with inserts made from perforated leather, the early version of the AMG logo embossed on the outside and the words “Founded 1967” stamped on the inside. To go with the leather collection there is also a key ring.

A tasteful pin in the form of the AMG heritage logo commemorates the anniversary of the company’s establishment. It is made of matt silver-coloured rhodium-plated brass with a patina effect. Completing the AMG Retro Edition is a coffee mug with original racing features from the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 and a set of 2 classic espresso cups with the early version of the AMG logo, both of which come in special gift boxes.

AMG Performance 50 Strategy – Hints at 8 New Models

The A45 AMG is representative of the future strategy entitled "AMG Performance 50", leading up to the 50th anniversary

As part of the anniversary marking “45 years of AMG”, Mercedes-AMG is providing an exclusive glimpse of the highlights of the A 45 AMG. With the powerful new top-of-the-range A-Class model, the performance brand from Mercedes-Benz is marking the start of a new era. For the first time in the 45-year history of the company, AMG will offer an exciting high-performance vehicle in the compact class. The A 45 AMG is representative of the ambitious future strategy entitled “AMG Performance 50”, leading up to the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Based on a unique model offensive comprising additional high-performance compact cars as well as a number of AMG cars in higher classes featuring highly efficient drive systems, the company from Affalterbach is giving out clear signals for dynamic growth. And the offensive is all set to get under way this summer with new models including the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG.

The AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine specially developed for the A 45 AMG is expected to set new standards in its displacement class: with maximum torque significantly above 400 Nm and low consumption levels, AMG is aiming to take the leading position among the competition. “Our goal is to build the most dynamic, most powerful and at the same time most efficient four-cylinder series production compact car. Together with other future high-performance compact cars, the new A 45 AMG will embody exclusive dynamism and the “AMG Performance 50″ growth strategy. With this passionate commitment to what for us is a new vehicle segment, Mercedes-AMG plans to make a significant contribution to the growth of Mercedes-Benz Cars”, according to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Perfect power transmission is ensured in the A 45 AMG thanks to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual clutch technology and performance-oriented all-wheel drive. The ideal basis for high cornering speeds and exciting, agile handling also comes courtesy of the AMG sports suspension with independently developed front and rear axles, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance braking system and 3-stage ESP® with “SPORT Handling” mode.

Driving performance for the new generation – world premiere in the first quarter of 2013

With the new A 45 AMG – the top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz A-Class model – Mercedes-AMG is addressing a new target group: falling within an age range from 30 up to around 45, the target group is younger than the classic AMG customer. Professionally successful and independent, these customers are looking for a compact, dynamic and individual vehicle. They want to express their stylish, trend-oriented lifestyle with a car from a recognised performance brand. By being available at an attractive price, the A 45 AMG will appeal to prospective new customers and help to open up new markets.

The A 45 AMG will celebrate its world premiere in the first quarter of 2013. Further AMG high-performance compact cars with a variety of different characteristic features are already in the pipeline and will follow on the heels of the A 45 AMG. When it came to the development of the compact Mercedes-Benz vehicle architecture for front and all-wheel drive, Mercedes-AMG has been involved from the very beginning. The most dynamic versions of the A-Class, namely the A 250 Sport and the A 220 CDI Sport – both “engineered by AMG” – currently already feature a front axle developed by AMG as well as a correspondingly tuned suspension, AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels with 235/40 R 18 tyres all round, painted in high-gloss black and with a high-sheen finish, and also red-painted brake callipers. The “Sport” designation is always used to characterise the most dynamic model series versions in the Mercedes-Benz product range.

Even more future AMG models with all-wheel drive

All-wheel drive is set to play a bigger role at Mercedes-AMG in the future too – being offered not just for SUVs and off-road vehicles, but also for other AMG high-performance vehicles. Mercedes-AMG currently has four all-wheel-drive models in its range: the ML 63 AMG, the G 63 AMG, the G 65 AMG and the GL 63 AMG. To mark the start of the new era, in 2013 the new A 45 AMG will be launched with a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system as standard.

Consistent growth strategy: “AMG Performance 50”

AMG is enjoying strong demand for its vehicles, particularly in its three largest markets where the performance brand has witnessed extremely dynamic growth in the past year. Sales have increased by seven percent in the USA, 15 percent in Germany and almost 50 percent in China.

This growth is continuing in 2012. In the first quarter of the year AMG recorded growth of more than 30 percent, making it the best first quarter in the company’s history. As a result AMG is looking to continue its consistent growth beyond 2012 and to make a significant contribution to the sales achieved by Mercedes-Benz Cars. Based on the ambitious future strategy entitled “AMG Performance 50”, in the coming years AMG will be launching further unique high-performance models. According to Ola Källenius: “We have decided to expand our model range from its current level of 22 vehicles to around 30 vehicles in the future. We are looking to increase our global sales, which today stand at around 20,000 vehicles, to more than 30,000 vehicles by the time of our 50th anniversary, and thereby assert our leading position in this exclusive segment.” In addition to the new performance compact car, the SLS AMG GT and the GL 63 AMG, in the future the S-Class segment will play an even greater role at AMG. The current offering comprising the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG, as well as the CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG, will be extended further over the coming years.

To meet the increasing demand, AMG is also expanding its production capacity accordingly. As a result, the new AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine will be produced at the Mercedes-Benz MDC Power engine production plant in Kölleda. This is where four-cylinder engines for the A- and B-Class are normally produced, and a specific assembly line is being set up for the new AMG engine. Of course the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engines will also be produced in line with the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. A characteristic feature of this production principle is the AMG engine badge bearing the signature of the responsible engineer.

Around 350 AMG Performance Centers by the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH

The “AMG Performance 50” growth strategy also includes opening up new dynamic markets. AMG see significant potential for increasing demand in countries such as China, Russia, Korea and Brazil. Playing a central role as part of this strategy are the AMG Performance Centers: some 270 Centers have been opened in 24 countries around the globe since 2008, and there are plans to increase this number to around 350 Performance Centers by 2017. A current example for the regional growth strategy is China: the new AMG Performance Center Beijing Sanlitun opened on 22 April 2012 is situated in an exclusive prime location in the luxury Sanlitun Village North shopping mall, and reflects the pioneering role played by AMG when it comes to design and technology in a modern setting. Unlike previously, the new store in Beijing is not integrated into a Mercedes-Benz dealership as part of a “shop-in-shop” system. Instead, it is based on a so-called standalone concept, and focuses exclusively on the products and features of the AMG performance brand.

Expansion of the excellent service quality enjoyed by all AMG customers

An important part of the “AMG Performance 50” dynamic growth strategy is the expansion of the excellent service quality enjoyed by all AMG customers. With immediate effect, more intensive customer care will allow for vehicles to be collected direct from the AMG headquarters – where AMG customers can learn all about the spirit of Affalterbach in the AMG theme area. In a new, 360-square-metre delivery hall, AMG customers can now take receipt of their new high-performance vehicle direct from AMG.

After being welcomed by a personal customer service attendant in the AMG Private Lounge, which was opened in 2011, the programme comprises an exclusive tour of the plant. This also includes a visit to the AMG Performance Studio, where individual and one-off AMG vehicles are developed and produced in limited numbers. This is followed by a tour of the AMG engine production facility: here AMG customers have the unique opportunity to meet the engineers who have produced the engine of their high-performance vehicle by hand in accordance with the traditional philosophy “one man, one engine”.

“AMG Performance 50” helps to reduce fleet consumption

Another goal of “AMG Performance 50” is the consistent reduction of fleet consumption. According to Ola Källenius: “By the 50th anniversary of AMG, we want to achieve CO2 emissions of around 200 grams per kilometre for the entire AMG model range. Our new AMG compact cars will of course help us to achieve this ambitious plan, but we are also aiming for a significant reduction in fuel consumption for other model series too. Many AMG models are currently already the “best in class” when it comes to consumption, emissions, maximum performance and torque. Our success is based on state-of-the-art technology.”

Acting as a role model in this area is the SLK 55 AMG. The eight-cylinder roadster incorporates Formula 1 technology for the road. It uses the world’s most fuel-efficient V8 engine which features the newly developed AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system. Adapted from the world of Formula 1, this technology enables the SLK 55 AMG to achieve a fuel consumption level which at 8.4 litres is 30% lower, and CO2 emissions of 195 grams per kilometre (NEDC combined). The technology is used in a similar way in the approx. 750 hp Mercedes-Benz V8 engines found in Formula 1. As efficiency also plays a major role at the pinnacle of motor racing, four cylinders are disabled by shutting off the fuel injection when the driver has lower load demands.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL is further proof of the pioneering role played by Mercedes-AMG in the development of intelligent drive concepts. The drivetrain with high-voltage lithium-ion battery for the new SLS AMG E-CELL is produced in cooperation with experts from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth in the UK. The SLS AMG E-CELL will celebrate its premiere this autumn at the Paris Motor Show. Mercedes-AMG will be launching a series production run of the first purely electric driven super sports car, and the first customers are expected to take delivery of this gullwing model with electric drive in 2013.

Both the SLS AMG E-CELL and the V8 engine with cylinder shut-off system in the SLK 55 AMG are examples of the goal to achieve a sustainable improvement in efficiency and a reduction in fleet consumption.

“AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy

A further building block adopted from the world of motorsport is in the area of lightweight construction – less weight means better performance and lower fuel consumption. As part of its ambitious “AMG Lightweight Performance” lightweight construction strategy, Mercedes-AMG will continue to apply consistent measures to reduce vehicle weight. Through their experience with the SLR, the AMG Black Series vehicles and in motorsport, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have accumulated more than 10 years of expertise in working with carbon-fibre materials.

AMG currently makes the propshaft for the SLS AMG, for example, out of carbon fibre. In the SLS Roadster, the supporting structure for the draught-stop is made as standard as a carbon-fibre sandwich structure. This component, with extremely short cycle times in an industrially oriented manufacturing process, already demonstrates what will be possible in the future. Carbon-fibre is also used in the SLS AMG E-CELL: the carbon-fibre monocoque for the battery is an integral part of the body shell and connected to the aluminium spaceframe.

In the case of the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG, for the first time the internal support for the boot lid is mass-produced from a lightweight carbon-fibre composite material. A completely new feature is the carbon-fibre rear panel with roll-over bar, available from the AMG Performance Studio as an exclusive optional extra for the C 63 AMG Coupé AMG Black Series. The high-strength, elegantly designed carbon-fibre component forms an integral part of the body and helps to reduce the vehicle weight by more than seven kilograms compared with a regular rear panel made of sheet steel.

Future strategy for all V12 engines lies with Mercedes-AMG

In the future, both the development responsibility as well as the production competence for all Mercedes-Benz-brand V12 engines will lie with Mercedes-AMG. Currently AMG produces the M 279 AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine motor for the S 65 AMG, CL 65 AMG, SL 65 AMG and G 65 AMG. In the future, all twelve-cylinder engines for upcoming Mercedes models will be developed in Affalterbach, and manufactured in the AMG production facility in accordance with the traditional philosophy “one man, one engine”.

AMG Sports package as a factor of success

A further component of the “AMG Performance 50” growth strategy is the consistent enhancement of the AMG Sports package. This dynamic optional extra is available for numerous Mercedes models and includes such attractive options as AMG bodystyling, AMG light-alloy wheels and the AMG sports suspension. The continually increasing demand for the AMG Sports package has induced Mercedes-AMG to enhance the range further. Currently around 25 percent of all Mercedes vehicles worldwide are delivered with the AMG Sports package – in 2011 alone more than 300,000 customers opted for a Mercedes-Benz with the AMG Sports package.

An attractive entry into the world of AMG is currently already afforded by the A 250 Sport and the A 220 CDI Sport, as well as the special variants of the C-Class, the C 250 Sport and C 250 CDI Sport, in whose development the performance specialists of AMG have been consistently involved. In addition to the visually enhanced AMG Sports package Plus, both models comprise a host of technical features developed exclusively by AMG to increase driving pleasure.

AMG Driving Academy on the road to success

The AMG Driving Academy also focuses on providing an intensive experience. The wide-ranging programme of events, which is being continually expanded, not only meets the most diverse requirements but also represents the very embodiment of pure excitement. Events on offer include enjoyment-oriented EMOTION tours, special winter driving training sessions in Swedish Lapland and exciting events on legendary racing circuits such as the North Loop of the Nürburgring, the Hockenheimring or Zandvoort. A particular highlight is the MASTERS programme, at which participants are able to drive the SLS AMG GT3, the racing version of the gullwing model. Participants who are resident in Germany also have the chance to acquire a national DMSB (German Motorsport Federation) driver’s licence.

All of the AMG Driving Academy’s events in Europe represent the perfect combination of driving pleasure and environmental awareness. The quantity of CO2 emissions of a Driving Academy event is determined on the basis of its so-called “carbon footprint” and this can be offset by involvement in climate protection projects. AMG Driving Academy training events now take place in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and Spain, as well as the USA, China and India. Based on increasing customer interest, Mercedes-AMG is currently working on expanding the programme to such markets as Australia, Japan, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the AMG Driving Academy also offers tailor-made events for corporate customers as well as a variety of other different markets. Demand is constantly on the increase and reflects the impressive success story which the AMG Driving Academy has enjoyed. In 2011 more than 7000 participants attended an AMG Driving Academy event – and this trend is on the up.

Motorsport serves as a source of inspiration for the AMG engineers

AMG was founded in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and from the very outset has achieved numerous successes in the field of motorsport. Today, as in the past, a commitment to the race track continues to form the brand’s main source of inspiration. The former two-man company currently employs a workforce of more than 1000 at its plant in Affalterbach, and over the past 45 years has become the technological spearhead and a one hundred percent subsidiary of Daimler AG. The professionalism of Mercedes-Benz’s performance brand is defined by its pursuit of high performance, precision and efficiency. As the first vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG, the SLS AMG super sports car unveiled in 2009 proves to impressive effect the competence and passion which exists at the company headquarters in Affalterbach. The AMG brand promise of “Driving Performance” stands for state-of-the-art technology and pure driving excitement.

With its roots seated firmly in motorsport, the AMG performance brand has been at home on the race track for decades – from its position as the most successful brand in the history of the DTM, through to its global commitment to customer motorsport at the highest level with the SLS AMG GT3. Having secured 26 victories and the FIA GT3 European championship, the SLS AMG GT3 was the most successful newcomer in the 2011 motorsports season. When it comes to Formula 1, AMG has been an official partner for 17 years, and has been helping to ensure that safety is maintained on the racing circuits by providing the Official F1™ Safety Car and the Official F1™ Medical Car since 1996. And since the start of 2012 the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team with Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher has also been lining up on the starting grid too.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Anniversary Commercial

Mercedes unveiled their commercial for the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary edition & let us know the only place a man can cry

Mercedes AMG unveiled their latest commercial for the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary special edition. The commercial lets us know the only place men can cry, and many of us will cry as only 45 units will be produced. The SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary edition celebrates the 45 years that passed since Mercedes started working with AMG. The Anniversary Edition is powered by a standard 6.0 liter V12 Engine with 463 kW (630 hp) at 4800 – 5400 rpm and 1000 Nm at 2300 – 4300 rpm*

The designers have created a new paint finish exclusively for the SL 65 AMG “45th ANNIVERSARY”: designo magno graphite. This grey color with its satin look helps to highlights the V12 roadster’s supremely powerful character. The matte finish brings out the contours of the aluminium body while high-gloss chrome applications add an interesting contrast.

Since its foundation in 1967, Mercedes-AMG GmbH, based in Affalterbach near Stuttgart, has been concerned with the development of motor racing and engine technologies. Numerous successes in the field of motorsport and an excellent reputation among customers around the globe attest to the outstanding expertise offered by the AMG brand. First Photos of Mercedes SLC AMG or SLS Black Series – You Decide

The Mercedes SLC AMG will be available in a coupé or roadster and will look remarkably similar to the slightly larger SLS

The Mercedes AMG division is currently working on an entry level model that will sit alongside the already updated SLS AMG GT. While it is still up in the air whether this is the previously seen SLS Black Series or the smaller SLC is yet to bee seen. The new two-seater, that will likely be titled the SLC AMG, will be somewhat easier on the wallet and smaller than the SLS AMG GT, poised to go head to head with the Porsche 911 and Audi R8. Thanks to our good friend Andrus and GMotors.co.uk, we have the first photos of the new sports car testing in Germany.

According to GMotors, this early stage prototype/mule borrows the SLS body and looks almost identical to it, but at closer inspection you will notice a shorter wheelbase. The front and rear disguise is very likely hiding some of the final components.

Just as its bigger brother, the SLC AMG will be available in two body styles: coupé and roadster. The coupe version will come with regular front-hinged doors not the SLS’s expensive gullwing doors. Quite heavily disguised prototype has a shorter wheelbase and you can see that the front is also shorter when compared to the SLS. The new model uses a lightweight aluminium spaceframe and double wishbone suspension.

Power will likely come from a new twin-turbo V8 with up to 500bhp. A twin-turbo V6 might be offered as well for the base model. World debut is very likely in the end of 2013, early 2014.

We will of course keep you up to date on the latest news on the SLC, but for now check out the photo gallery below and decide for yourself which masterpiece it is.
