Mercedes G63 AMG Six-Wheeler Combines Off-Road Tech and AMG Power

The world of the Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 off-road begins where anything vehicle without caterpillar tracks would have to quit

UPDATE: Mercedes announced pricing for the 2014 Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6, and it seems that those extra wheels come with an extra large price tag.  The G 63 AMG 6×6 can be yours at a starting price of 451,010 EUR (VAT included) in Germany.

A look at the key data of the G 63 AMG 6×6 makes it clear that this model’s off-road world begins at a point where anything less than a vehicle with caterpillar tracks would have to capitulate. Six driven wheels, an off-road low-range ratio in the transfer case, portal axles and five differential locks which can be engaged on the move are features which one seeks in vain in conventional off-road vehicles. Together, they ensure that the G 63 AMG 6×6 has driving dynamics which are more than a match for the toughest terrain. As a result, the show vehicle is able to storm up the highest sand dunes with ease while sand tracks hold no fears thanks to its unshakable directional stability. Rocky terrain is negotiated with all the agility of a mountain goat; fording a river becomes almost child’s play thanks to the impressive fording capability. And anyone exploring the on-road performance is certain to be impressed by the catapult-like acceleration of this 3.85-tonne pickup.

Despite its unique drive technology, the show vehicle does not actually represent a new development in terms of technology. After 34 years of G-Class production, there is such a large array of “G” parts to draw on that the G 63 AMG 6×6 uses almost exclusively series-production components under the skin. A case in point is the drive train: the AMG V8 engine, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission and the front drive system have been taken over from the G 63 AMG while the transfer case with low-range ratio has been matched with a rear twin drive train from a 6×6 version which has already proven its reliability in service with users such as the Australian army.

Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6

Technical highlight: the portal axles

Newly developed for a wide variety of applications, the portal axles which have been added to the Mercedes-Benz off-road portfolio are the real technical highlight of the show vehicle. Unlike conventional rigid axles, where the wheels are centred on the axis of the shaft, the wheels of the portal axle are significantly lower thanks to the portal gears on the axle heads. As a result, the ground clearance of the G 63 AMG 6×6 is increased to 460 millimetres (series-production G-Class: 210 millimetres) and the fording depth – or maybe it would be more accurate to say diving depth – is increased to 1000 millimetres (series-production: 600 millimetres).

This design has further important benefits which do away with the need for elaborate adaptation measures. As the position of the axles relative to the chassis remains unchanged, so too do the suspension anchorage points, the steering connection and the position of the propshafts. Furthermore, the portal gear reduction ratio compensates for the huge rolling circumference of the 37-inch tyres so that the gear ratios, speedometer drive and ABS sensors also remain unchanged. An additional benefit of the reduction ratio applied by the portal gears is that the drive torque is only applied to the wheels themselves with the result that the mechanical loads on the drive train – especially the drive shafts – are reduced.

Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6

Through-drive: the center differential

A technically sophisticated solution provides the 6×6 drive system with the necessary through-drive through the differential of the first rear axle to the rear one. The arrangement which has been developed is extremely compact and requires little more space than a conventional differential housing. An extra shaft with an integrated lock situated on the side above the differential takes the drive torque to the rear axle. A chain provides the necessary power take-off for the differential of the first rear axle.

Precisely coordinated logic governs operation of five differential locks

With a total of five mechanical 100-percent differential locks available, drivers would certainly lose track of the settings now and again if they could be engaged separately. This is why the engineers have developed a special locking logic which ensures the best possible traction is available in every situation. The whole system is controlled electrically with the usual three differential lock switches in the centre console which are to be found in all G models. Preselected and engaged locks are indicated by yellow and red lights respectively.

  • Stage 1: the two inter-axle differential locks in the transfer case and in thethrough-drive through the centre differential are active
  • Stage 2: the interwheel differential locks in the tworear axle differentials are additionally activated
  • Stage 3: with the front axle differential locked, allfive differential locks are now active

All lock stages can be selected regardless of whether the low-range ratio in the transfer case is selected.

It is clear that, with a wheelbase of some 4.20 metres, the G 63 AMG 6×6 is not predestined for virtuoso cornering. Nevertheless, in order to ensure impressive agility with corresponding dynamism about the vertical axis of the vehicle, the engineers have varied the torque distribution. The drive torque is therefore split 30 to 40 to 30 percent between the front axle and the two rear axles.

V8 biturbo from power specialists Mercedes AMG

Much of the credit for the superior performance of the G 63 AMG 6×6 is due to the AMG V8 engine and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a peak output of 400 kW (544 hp) and 760 newton metres of torque. Known in-house by the designation M 157, the engine impresses with its technological highlights. The greater thermodynamic efficiency which results from the combination of twin turbochargers, direct petrol injection and spray-guided combustion allows better fuel economy and leads to lower exhaust emissions. Fast and precise piezo-electric injectors spray the fuel into the combustion chambers, ensuring a particularly fine distribution throughout the air in the combustion chamber. An electric low-pressure pump delivers the fuel from the tank to a high-pressure pump in the engine compartment at a pressure of six bar. The fuel pressure in the high-pressure rail is controlled between 100 and 200 bar on a fully variable and demand-related basis, ensuring an agile response in any driving situation. Further highlights of the innovative and unique eight-cylinder powerplant from AMG in Affalterbach include an all-aluminium crankcase, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling and alternator management.

Any doubts about the show vehicle’s ability to speak directly to the emotions are quickly dispelled by a look at the AMG sports exhaust system: twin tailpipes ahead of the rear wheels on both sides put out the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound.

Faster shifting with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

Featuring three drive modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission delivers the drive to the transfer case with low-range ratio by means of a propshaft. “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode calls up engine and drive control strategies designed to deliver a driving style which is as economical as possible. In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving modes, the engine-transmission combination displays considerably greater agility. Here, a brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load provides for shorter shift times. Furthermore, in “M” mode, the G 63 AMG 6×6 maintains the gear selected by the driver to the extent that this is permitted by the engine rev limits – a particularly useful feature when negotiating challenging climbs.

The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new fuel economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearings and transmission oil thermal management.

It makes sense to provide an ample fuel supply for vehicles which are designed to be used in remote areas. This is why the standard production tank with a capacity of 96 litres has been complemented by a 63-litre auxiliary tank. The total tank capacity therefore amounts to 159 litres.

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 220 pounds lighter than before

Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG 4MATIC by up to 220 pounds compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance two-piece brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further 9 pounds. The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 577 hp and a torque of 664 lb-ft, the AMG eight-cylinder motor from the M157 engine family outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is lower than its predecessor, even though the engine output has been increased by 49 hp.

Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine:

  • Direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors
  • Twin turbocharging
  • All-aluminum crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO Start/Stop function

Automatic logic controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers

AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logiccontrolled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Engine production at AMG

Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is assembled by hand at AMG, observing the highest levels of craftsmanship. Highly qualified engine builders assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine builder’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 pounds

Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 pounds. The high-performance battery is relatively resilient in cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S63 AMG 4MATIC is the world’s first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.

Mercedes S63 AMG Sport / Comfort

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented “C” mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear, for ensured comfort and efficiency.

In the “S” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO Start/Stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.

2014 Mercedes S63 AMG Driving Front View

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high-performance driving dynamics and enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces (winter tires are required for winter conditions). Optimum traction is provided by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which exploits the maximum friction connection potential of all four wheels.

The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 154 pounds, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. The vectoring of torque helps reduce understeer when turning into corners.

AIRMATIC Suspension

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG ADAPTIVE sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface conditions. “Comfort” and “Sport” suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimize the vehicle’s agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.

S63 AMG Light Alloy Wheels

S63 AMG Light Alloy Wheels

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

The S63 AMG 4MATIC is available with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels – size 8.5×19 at the front and 9.5×19 at the rear with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tires respectively.

Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, with size 8.5×20 at the front and 9.5×20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, removeable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport.

AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece brake system as an option for the first time

Extremely short stopping distances and immediate deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance two-piece brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance twopiece brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20 percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.

Design: Confidence and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms

Powerful and exclusive, dramatic and prestigious – the new S63 AMG 4MATIC also makes a visual impression. The high-performance sedan’s design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasizes the exclusivity and power of the S63 AMG 4MATIC. Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The threedimensional front splitter in silver shadow reduces lift.

Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create an aggressive flow along the side with the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line”. Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG highperformance brake system. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front fenders identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the “S63 AMG” model designation on the trunk lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver shadow and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with internal dynamic exhaust flaps.

2014 Mercedes CLA45 AMG

Other brands just can't compare to the 2014 Mercedes CLA45 AMG's 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque and the sexy inspired styling

When Mercedes-Benz announced the new CLA45 AMG every other car manufacturer with any plans to put out a small four-cylinder car were no doubt saddened by the announcement. Other brands just can’t compare to the 2014 Mercedes CLA45 AMG‘s 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque and the sexy inspired styling that is packed into the mini sedan. Even with it’s base price of $48,350, it will likely set the benchmark for small performance sedans in the future.

Unlike the previous generation of the Mercedes A-Class (not the new generation A-Class which we love!) which was seen as more of a Mercedes branded commuter car, the new CLA has a young and fresh design with sexy lines that make it fit in with the rest of the Mercedes family. The design of the CLS is what attracted AMG to the project add to that it’s driving ability and there was no question that the CLA needed an AMG variant.

AMG made the decision early on that sticking with a four-cylinder was the only option for the CLA AMG. But surprisingly, even though the architecture between the standard Mercedes and the AMG is similar, the two share very few parts. AMG uses a proprietary block, head, and most hardware, the turbo, which provides 26 pounds of boost, is larger than the standard unit and requires an AMG-specific water-to-air charge-cooler. Then you have the pistons and crank that are forged, with balancing and weight optimization that are made close to racing level. The end result is a four-cylinder that outputs 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. But even though this will be the most powerful I-4 for sale in the U.S., their is so much more ot the CLA45 AMG than these numbers.

Thanks to careful and near-obsessive engineering, the guys at AMG have produced a turbocharged engine that can deliver 177.5 hp per liter and develops full torque from 2250 to 5000 rpm. Not only can it deliver a huge amount of torque on demand, it can deliver the exact amount of torque the driver requires. It’s common for high-strung turbocharged engines to supply torque in an all-or-nothing way, but this CLA45 engine delivers levels of throttle modulation and response that is more fitting of a naturally aspirated mill. Full-throttle acceleration opens up a valve in the exhaust, creating an loud roar that peaks at every shift.

The engine is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission developed along with Mercedes. Off the line, the transmission can be a little too aggressive and snatches the clutch a little too quickly, feeling like a manual transmission with a less-than-skilled driver on the right pedal. Once rolling, however, shifts are fast without being violent. On the roads around Hannover and the amazing Bilster Berg Race Track, the transmission never faltered. It offers three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Manual. Pulling either paddle in Comfort or Sport allows for Momentary Manual mode, which will hold a gear until the driver initiates a kick-down with the throttle pedal or an upshift is needed at the rev limiter. On the track, using Sport Mode plus Momentary Manual seemed to work best. Pulling a paddle to downshift going into tighter turns would get the car into the powerband and the computer seemed to pick upshift points just fine.

Those same tight corners showed the necessity of the CLA’s all-wheel-drive system. This is still a front-wheel-drive-based system, and you will never confuse it for anything else, but it is still quite capable. AMG claims the system is up to 25 percent lighter than similar systems. Instead of a Haldex power unit hanging off the back of the transaxle, a clutch pack has been located on the rear differential housing for better weight distribution. The system can transfer up to 50 percent of drive torque to the rear tires. It’s tied into the car’s ESP and also uses steering input, yaw, and throttle level to determine how and when to transfer power.

Although AMG feels that the CLA’s suspension is best in class, it wasn’t up to the performance level of the powertrain. Like the base car, the AMG CLA uses a McPherson strut front and multilink rear, but that’s where the similarities end. As you would expect, spring and damping rates are more aggressive, but AMG has also changed both static and kinematic geometry. The front spindles were designed with more static negative camber, but the lower ball joint pivot was lowered to add more kinematic camber and raise the roll axis. If you’ve been paying attention during the last couple of years, you will realize that suspension performance is all about bushings, and this car is no different. The durometer (a measure of hardness) of all the bushings is different from the standard car, and even the steering tie-rods feature stiffer bushings. The difference is immediately noticeable not only in the level and clarity of steering feel, but also in impacts on broken pavement. Impacts can be sharp in the AMG, though they stay short of harsh.

The standard wheel is an 18×8-inch split five-spoke design, while the optional 19×8-inch multi-spoke wheel is available in silver or dark grey. The 18-inch wheel uses a 235/40 tire, while the 19-inch uses a 235/35. Underneath those wheels are 4-piston calipers over 13.8-inch rotors in front and single-piston calipers over 13.0-inch rotors in the rear. HT: John via MotorTrend

Mercedes C63 AMG Edition 507

The C63 AMG Edition 507 outputs 56 hp more, bringing the output to 507 hp with 450 lb.-ft. of torque

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the more powerful, more aggressive C63 AMG model dubbed the “Edition 507” back in February, and at your request, we are taking another look at the insanely powerful AMG model. The output of the AMG 6.3 liter V8 engine has been increased by 56 hp, bringing the output to 507 hp with 450 lb.-ft. of torque.  Much of the technology from the SLS AMG has been carried over to the 2014 C63 AMG “Edition 507” including: the eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine features forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft as seen on the super sports car. An AMG high-performance compound constuction braking system with red brake calipers is fitted as standard.

The C63 AMG “Edition 507” will be on show in Geneva and be available in the Summer of 2013.

The C63 AMG “Edition 507” comes in both a coupe and sedan and produces 507 hp pushing it 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. This new model outperforms the existing 451 hp C63 model by three-tenths of a second, and the variants with the AMG Development Package which produce 481 hp by two-tenths of a second. In addition to an increase in top speed to 174 mph, the “Edition 507” also includes a voucher for a driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy.

According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The C 63 AMG with the classic AMG 6.3-litre high-revving V8 naturally aspirated engine is one of the most popular AMG high-performance cars in the world. C63 AMG “Edition 507” featuring technology from the SLS AMG

The increase in power output to 507 hp at 6800 rpm comes courtesy of the modified inner workings of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine. The forged pistons adopted from the SLS AMG, together with new connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft, translate into a weight saving of 6.6 lbs. The reduction of rotational mass inertia improves the agility of the eight-cylinder M156 naturally aspirated engine. The maximum torque has also increased by 7 lb.-ft., jumping from 443 lb.-ft. to 450 lb.-ft. at 5200 rpm. The titanium grey-painted variable intake manifold is a characteristic feature of the uprated V8 engine. A new engine control system rounds off the series of implemented powertrain measures.

The exterior of the C63 AMG “Edition 507” is characterized by exclusive new design features. Most notable of the features is the hood – it originates from the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series. Two openings in the distinctive aluminium hood help with expelling engine heat. Newly designed AMG light-alloy forged wheels with 235/35 R 19 front tires and 255/30 R 19 rear tires are another exclusive feature of the “Edition 507”. The AMG light-alloy wheels are produced using lightweight forging technology and are available in two variants: titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, or matte black with highsheen rim flanges. An AMG sports stripe applique in matte graphite grey have been located above the rocker panels and are yet another new feature of the exterior.

The spoiler lip on the trunk lid, the exterior mirror housings as well as the
surrounds on the radiator grille and daytime running lights are all finished in high-gloss black. Available as an option for the C63 AMG “Edition 507” is an exclusive designo magno platinum matte finish paint.

AMG high-performance braking system featuring compound technology

As standard, the C63 AMG “Edition 507” comes with an even more powerful AMG high-performance braking system featuring compound construction technology. The front axle makes use of compound brake discs measuring 14.2 in. x 1.4 in. The advantages of the compound design include higher fatigue strength and lower warping characteristics. In addition, compound construction discs are lighter in weight and the reduced unsprung masses improve the response of the spring/damping elements.

With compound construction, the brake discs are connected to an aluminium bowl via eight cast bracket arms. The brake discs are ventilated and perforated all around and are decelerated by means of 6-piston aluminium fixed calipers on the front axle and 4-piston fixed calipers on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red as standard fitment.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission for a personal setup

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission. Four drive programs, “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), provide each driver with a personal setup. In “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfortable and early gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear.

In the “S”, “S+” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Perfectly tailored to a sporty driving style is the partial suppression of the cylinders during gear changes. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts. An automatic double-clutching function for downshifts and the RACE START function are also part of the standard features of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel-drive for maximum dynamics

The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque at a ratio of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle). The rear-biased torque split provides for signature AMG high driving dynamics and superlative driving pleasure. The 3-stage ESP® has been tailored specifically to the permanent all-wheel drive system. In “SPORT Handling” mode, the Torque Vectoring Brake performs selective braking interventions on individual wheels in the interest of high agility, thereby preventing unwelcome understeer during turn-in. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle.

The AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive provides optimal traction by using a multiplate clutch with a locking force of 37 lb.-ft., which particularly highlights the powerful transfer of torque on all four wheels.

The technical basis of the all-wheel drive is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is compactly integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed sports transmission and requires virtually no additional installation space. The torque is transferred from the power take-off via a propellershaft to the front axle. The power is sent from the front-axle differential to the front-left drive shaft via an intermediate shaft that passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low additional weight for the all-wheel-drive system of only 155 lbs.

2014 CLS63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC

CLS63 AMG S-Model with limited-slip rear differential

Mercedes-AMG goes even one step further on the CLS63 AMG S-Model. In keeping with its philosophy of “Driving Performance,” a limited-slip rear differential is fitted on the rear axle as standard. This high-tech package increases traction even further. The effect is even better vehicle dynamics and more driving pleasure, in particular on the racetrack.

All CLS63 AMG models feature the AMG Adaptive Sports Suspension which featuresan electronically controlled damping system. The front axle employs a steel-spring suspension system, while the rear axle is fitted with a fully loadbearing air suspension system. Pressing the button marked with a shock absorber icon in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is sufficient to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport Plus”. The three-link front suspension has undergone further optimization for the S-Model and the CLS63 AMG with all-wheel drive. In conjunction with the newly developed aluminum axle components, these optimization measures result in markedly enhanced grip and agility combined with a high level of neutrality during fast cornering. The markedly more performance-oriented elastokinematics are exclusive to the S-Model, and offer the driver maximum neutrality and even better feedback and grip at the critical limits. The CLS63 AMG’s 2.4 centimeter (0.9″) wider track on the front axle offers substantially greater stability at higher cornering speeds and improved road feel. Increased negative camber on both axles additionally boosts lateral dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive steering complements the vehicle’s set-up to perfection. The direct steering ratio of 14:1 ensures extremely agile handling in bends in conjunction with the variable power assist dependent on the selected suspension mode. The CLS63 AMG is fitted as standard with triple-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted titanium gray with a high-sheen finish. Tires in size 255/35 R 19 are mounted on 9.0 x 19 wheels at the front, while the 10 x 19 rear wheels carry size 285/30 R 19 tires. Only the high-performance S-Model features exclusive 10-spoke light-alloy wheels painted matte titanium gray with a high sheen rim flange.

Optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system

As you would expect from an AMG vehicle, the CLS63 AMG is equipped with an AMG high-performance braking system. The front and rear axles sport ventilated and perforated brake discs in ample 14.2 inch format. The discs, which are subject to particularly high levels of stress and strain on the front axle, feature the compound rotor braking technology which has been tried and tested in the field of motorsport. Calipers with a silver painted finish and white AMG lettering and-incorporating six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide for spontaneous, fading-resistant deceleration and the shortest stopping distances.

An AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system is exclusively available for the S-Model as an optional feature – recognizable by the even larger 15.8 inches brake discs and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on calipers sporting a the signature bronze metallic paint finish. This ceramic system is around 40 percent lighter, reducing unsprung masses and enhancing handling, agility and ride comfort. The superior hardness of the ceramic brake discs leads to a longer service life and greater resistance to extreme stress and heat.

S-Model with subtly different design features

In terms of exterior design, the CLS63 AMG S-Model is distinguished from the other models by red brake calipers and the AMG logo on the trunk lid sporting an “S” in contrasting black. The the standard black Premium leather interior of the S-Model features gray contrasting stitching on the AMG sports seats, the center door panels, the door armrests, the steering wheel, the center console and is accented by silver seat belts. The rim of the AMG Performance steering wheel in black Premium leather is flattened at the top and bottom and boasts grip areas in Alcantara® . The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats exclusively feature the AMG crest embossed directly into the Premium leather. emblems. The AMG instrument cluster has some design cues unique to the S-Model and features an “S AMG” logo on the speedometer that is accompanied by red accents on the dials. Illuminated AMG door sill panels with white backlighting round off the exclusive range of equipment and appointments of the S-Model.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system

A particular highlight in the selection of optional equipment for all CLS variants is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system. Mercedes-Benz and AMG have created a high-end sound system with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system is capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 playback and provides an exclusive music experience with unparalleled sound. The basis for this is not only the 1,200-watt amplifier and the 14 high-end speakers with neodymium drivers, but also the distribution of the music signals that is precisely controlled by the sound processor. This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) provides drivers with the option of selecting a special B&O sound menu on the COMAND system. In True Image™ mode individual sound settings for the front, center and rear can be selected. The effect: a realistic sound experience at the selected listening position. The “Sound Mode” menu also has various preset sound modes that allow choices between a high-end “Reference” studio sound and a spacious surround sound. While “Reference” puts the focus on the reproduction of the artist’s sound, the special surround sound mode delivers a spacious sound experience. In particular live recordings or concertos result in a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without altering the naturalness of the recording.

Illuminated 50-watt tweeters with acoustic lens technology, arranged in the mirror triangle, add special highlights. High-end speaker covers in silver chrome with Bang & Olufsen logo additionally signal the exceptional position of the high-end surround sound system.

2014 Mercedes CLA45 AMG Debuts at New York Auto Show

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG with 360 HP turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylindar engine, has debuted at the 2013 New York Auto Show

It’s official, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG with 360 HP turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylindar engine, has made its world debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The CLA45 AMG offers drivers 332 pound-feet of torque and according to Mercedes-Benz, the engine is the “most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder production engine”.

The 2014 CLA45 AMG can sprint  0-62 mph in a mere 4.6 seconds while on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The power needed to reach these speeds at these times are transferred via a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

As for looks, we are huge fans of the newly designed 2014 CLA-Class, add to that an AMG front fascia that is far more aggressive, larger wheels and a lowered ride height and we like it even more.  We think Mercedes knocked it out of the park with this model. It’s sporty and sexy and priced at only $47,450.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG

Mercedes-AMG kicks off the automotive spring of 2013 in the “Big Apple” in dynamic style as the CLA 45 AMG celebrates its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show. The philosophy behind this four-door mid-series coupé matches that of the successful CLS 63 AMG, the trendsetter among four-door high-performance coupés. A glance at this high-tech package suffices to show that the CLS 45 AMG also has all the typical DNA to make it a perfect representative of the AMG’s Driving Performance brand claim: with a peak output of 265 kW (360 hp) and maximum torque of 450 Newton metres, its turbocharged engine is not only the most powerful four-cylinder unit in series production anywhere in the world but also a highly efficient one that meets the EU6 emissions standard. With fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 km according to NEDC combined figures, the CLA 45 AMG meets even the most exacting requirements. The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive of the CLA 45 AMG similarly sets a new benchmark in its competitive segment.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “With the CLA 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG is launching a unique and highly desirable automobile with all the typical DNA of AMG. A high-tech package that includes the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine in the world as well as performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it embodies Driving Performance at its best.”

The new four-door high-performance coupé offers an exceptional combination of an excitingly sporty driving experience, extravagant design and exclusive individuality. With the CLA 45 AMG Mercedes-AMG is establishing a completely new segment – as it did previously with the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake (2012) and the CLS 55 AMG (2004). At the time of their launch, neither of these AMG models had any direct rivals, but went on to inspire other automotive manufacturers. Turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission – the CLA 45 AMG features the same drive system that is already powering the A 45 AMG to deliver highly dynamic and efficient performance.

Typically AMG: the most powerful series-production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world

A glance at the technical data for the CLA 45 AMG shows: the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine, with a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque, is the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production anywhere in the world.

The combination of high performance and torque, together with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, gives the CLA 45 AMG driving characteristics almost on a par with those of a sports car. The performance coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). But the AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is impressive not only in terms of its dynamic performance but also with regard to its efficiency and environmental compatibility. The CLA 45 AMG achieves a fuel consumption level of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres according to NEDC combined figures, while it already meets the EU6 emissions standard that only comes into effect in 2015 as well as the limit for the particle count per kilometre of 6 × 1011 part./km that will become mandatory in 2017.

The basis for these impressive figures is provided by the high-tech package which has been put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance engine belonging to the BlueDIRECT family, the four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel utilisation and increases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, leading to lower exhaust emissions. Other highlights include the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-optimised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.

Twin-scroll turbochargers and AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap

Mercedes-AMG addresses the essential challenges concerning the response of small-displacement turbo engines by means of a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum derestriction of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. The twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure, making effective use of exhaust gas back pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas impulse. This results in a swifter build-up of torque right from the lower rev range. As a positive side-effect, the twin-scroll technology also benefits fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. With a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine leads the field in this respect, too.

The AMG sports exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap. This technology, which is familiar from the SLK 55 AMG, reconciles the two apparently conflicting aims of tangible dynamism and hallmark Mercedes comfort on long journeys. The flap is continuously adjusted by map control according to the power called up by the driver, load status and engine speed. The AMG sports exhaust system emits a fascinating, full engine sound that is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration.

An AMG Performance exhaust system with exhaust flap is available as an option for the A 45 AMG. This provides for an even more emotional and striking engine sound when the throttle is open and during gear shifting. The double-declutching function during downshifting and the interruption of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load produce a particularly throaty sound with the AMG Performance exhaust system and create a level of emotionality which is otherwise the preserve of engines with more than four cylinders.

High-performance cooling system with components from the SLS AMG

The high driving dynamics of the CLA 45 AMG call for a highly effective cooling system. On the basis of the components from the SLS AMG, a low-temperature circuit is additionally deployed for air-water charge air cooling of the four-cylinder turbo engine. The cooler extending across the complete front level of the cooling module is supplemented by an additional cooler in the wheel arch. Together with the charge air cooler, which is connected in series, a high-performance electric pump ensures the required flow through the water coolers located behind the large intake ports. This provides for ideal cooling of the highly compressed charge air, thereby contributing towards optimum engine performance.

The cooling of the transmission oil is integrated into the water cooling circuit for the engine. The water cooler positioned behind the front apron is supported by the heat exchanger which is fitted directly on the transmission and supplied with cooling water as required by means of an auxiliary pump.

“One man, one engine”: a tradition of hand-built excellence

As is the case with all eight- and twelve-cylinder engines, the new AMG four‑cylinder turbo engine is hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. An exclusive assembly line has been set up for the new AMG engine at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Kölleda – where all BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines are built for the A- and B-Class models. A characteristic feature of the “one man, one engine” production process is the AMG engine plate bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine plate also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission

Dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive – the drive package on board the new CLA 45 AMG is a demonstration of high-end engineering prowess. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is directly flange-mounted on the transversely installed engine. Key software modules have been adopted from the SLS AMG super sports car with its inspirational power transmission concept. The dual clutch transmission of the CLA 45 AMG features seven gears, three driving programmes, a double-declutching function and RACE START for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the AMG DCT sports transmission include spontaneous gear shifting without any interruption in tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy, extremely smooth and easy gear shifting and a high level of efficiency. Reinforced gear wheels provide for maximum stability. Synchroniser rings with carbon-fibre friction linings improve durability while also optimising the response time during manual gear-changing – the ideal basis for ambitious laps on cordoned-off race tracks.

“Momentary M mode” for even greater dynamism and driving enjoyment

Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving enjoyment is the so-called “Momentary M mode”. In C and S mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode (“M”) without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the “up” or “down” shift paddle once. In Momentary M mode the driver experiences the dynamism and performance of gear-shifting in manual mode in all the automatic driving programmes, with automatic up-shifting on meeting the rpm limit into the bargain. This allows the driver to devote his full attention to the vehicle’s impressive performance.

The shift times in manual mode “M” and in Sport mode “S” are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car. Briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts in “M” and “S”, with a more emotional sound than ever. In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), tangibly soft transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. In addition, in “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is active.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The CLA 45 AMG comes with variable, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all‑wheel drive as standard. In developing this all-wheel drive, the focus was firmly on performance and dynamism. The power flux to the rear powertrain is provided by a compact power take-off unit (PTU) which is fully integrated in the 7-speed sports transmission. It does not possess an oil circuit of its own. Instead, it is supplied with lubricant from the oil circuit of the sports transmission. This configuration gives rise to substantial weight advantages in comparison to rival systems which branch off power by means of an add-on component with its own oil circuit. Together with the friction-minimised tapered roller bearings, the PTU achieves an excellent level of efficiency. As an additional bonus, the system weight of the new AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive is up to 25 percent lighter than the all-wheel-drive versions offered by the competition.

A two-part propeller shaft transfers the power from the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine to the rear axle. In the interests of favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multiple-disc clutch is integrated with the rear axle differential. The multiple-disc clutch immediately detects slip at the front axle. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this takes place virtually without the driver noticing. To enable particularly fast response, the pump is always active and does not require to be started up each time it is needed, as is customary with other systems. Power distribution is fully variable: in normal driving, the CLA 45 AMG uses front-wheel drive in the interests of optimum efficiency. When the driving dynamics so require, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits the torque between front and rear axle up to a ratio of 50:50 percent. The variables influencing the power distribution ratio are vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, speed difference between the individual wheels, selected gear and accelerator position.

3-stage ESP® with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist

An exclusive feature is the interaction of the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive with the 3-stage ESP® and the ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist. The three ESP® stages enable the driver to vary the dynamics of the CLA 45 AMG according to his individual wishes at the push of a button. The safety-oriented “ESP ON” mode supports the driver in maintaining neutral handling characteristics. The system initiates braking intervention on one or more wheels and reduces the engine torque on detecting that the operating conditions are becoming unstable.

Briefly pressing the ESP® button activates “ESP SPORT Handling” mode. This dynamically oriented driving mode applies appropriate control strategies for later ESP® intervention and increased drive torque at the rear axle. This means more fun at the wheel for drivers who are keen to exploit the vehicle’s dynamic potential. Pressing the ESP® button longer activates “ESP OFF”. In this mode, the ESP® functions are not available. ESP OFF should only be used by experienced drivers on cordoned-off race tracks. If the driver steps on the brake pedal in “SPORT Handling” mode or “ESP OFF” mode, all the safety functions of the ESP® system become available during braking.

ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist complements the ESP® system to perfection: during dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the inside wheel gives rise to a defined yaw moment around the vertical axis, resulting in precise cornering by the CLA 45 AMG and ensuring that the vehicle remains under control at all times. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is adapted according to the selected ESP® mode. In “ESP SPORT Handling” mode and “ESP OFF” mode it supports the driver’s wish for increased agility and driving dynamics. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is an additional function of the Electronic Stability Program which noticeably improves not only agility, but also active driving safety in critical conditions.

AMG sports suspension with independent front and rear axle

Like every AMG high-performance automobile, the new CLA 45 AMG also incorporates sophisticated axle technology. For enhanced driving dynamics, the three-link front suspension is provided with stiffer steering knuckles and totally new elastokinematics. Newly developed, more rigid bearings are employed in the lower link plane. These provide for more agile cornering properties and more precise and direct feedback from the road surface. The more rigid bearings also lead to higher camber stiffness, enabling higher cornering speeds. In developing the complete front axle, great importance has been attached to attaining the best possible traction in highly dynamic driving.

The four-link rear axle of the CLA 45 AMG is also a totally new development. In the course of optimising the elastokinematics, the strut bearings were duly adapted for maximum driving dynamics and control. The rear axle carrier is provided with more rigid bearings for increased driving stability; the subframe is rigidly connected to the body. The AMG sports suspension with specifically tuned spring/damper units and larger stabilisers provides for high lateral acceleration and a reduced rolling tendency in fast double bends. The CLA 45 AMG comes as standard with AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 235/40 R 18 tyres.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and AMG high-performance braking system

The electromechanical Dual Pinion AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with AMG-specific, speed-dependent power assistance and a constant steering ratio (14.5 : 1) enables high steering precision and agility. The electric motor is installed in space-saving configuration on the steering gear. The AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated brake discs all round in size 350 x 32 millimetres at the front and 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear provides for spontaneous and reliable deceleration.

Unmistakable design

Just a glance at the new CLA 45 AMG makes it very clear: any resemblance to the CLS 63 AMG is absolutely intentional. The expressive design idiom of the CLA has been enhanced by Mercedes-AMG with some characteristic AMG elements – and the result is a new design icon. The sporty proportions of the CLA were there from the start , but its dynamic look is reinforced by the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the cross strut in the AMG front apron, both painted in matt titanium grey. The generously proportioned cooling air intakes are framed by black flics, which improve the airflow over the cooling modules positioned behind them. Bi-xenon headlamps are included as standard.

An eyecatching view from the side is ensured by the sill panels with inserts in matt titanium grey. Further elements typical of a top-of-the-range AMG model include the AMG twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted grey and with a high-sheen finish, plus the “TURBO AMG” lettering on the wing. Seen from the rear, the CLA 45 AMG displays a distinctive AMG rear apron: this not only reveals the presence of the air outlet openings at the sides, but also incorporates a large diffuser insert and a trim section in matt titanium grey. The two chrome-plated twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, including an exhaust flap, serve to emphasise the car’s dynamic appeal. The striking LED tail lights are a standard feature.

Dynamic, exclusive and top-quality interior

Impressive quality, high-grade materials and all the dynamism and exclusivity commonly associated with Mercedes-AMG – the interior of the CLA 45 AMG leaves nothing to be desired. Sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with red contrasting topstitching, red seat belts, the multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles, the AMG DRIVE UNIT and AMG door sill panels all come as standard. Coordinating perfectly with one another are the brushed aluminium trim of the instrument panel and the five galvanised ventilation outlets. Information is provided by the AMG instrument cluster with its central colour display, the AMG main menu and the RACETIMER.

Mercedes CLS63 AMG Stealth by German Special Customs

The GSC CLS63 AMG outputs 750 HP, 1,150 Nm of torque propelling it from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds & a top speed of 217 mph

We first took notice of German Special Customs when they unveiled their original styling kit for the Mercedes CLS63 AMG called the Stealth. This week, German Special Customs revealed their latest CLS63 AMG Stealth.  This time the four-door coupe comes in a not so stealthy, standout  orange.

German Special Customs treated the engine to a makeover that increases the output from the standard 550 HP to an impressive 750 HP with a torque output of 1,150 Nm of torque (848 lb-ft). Only needing 3.7 seconds to sprint 0-62 mph It does 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 before reaching its top speed of 217 mph.  This explains the bright orange color, the CLS63 AMG doesn’t need to be stealthy when its this fast.

The body kit consists of side skirts, spoiler lip, vented bonnet, fender flares, rear diffuser and bootlid spoiler, as well as 20-inch black rims, and KW Coilover suspension.  Not forgotten by GSC was the interior which they updated with a two-tone orange and black interior with plenty of carbon fiber touches.

Mercedes G63 AMG Six-Wheeler Tears Up the Desert

For the 6x6 G63 AMG, rocky terrain is negotiated with ease & fording a river is child's play thanks to the one meter fording capability

Earlier this month we brought you the first photos of the new Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6 and now we have a complete look at the massive off-roader with over 50 photos and specs.  Stay tuned as this is part 1. Superior 6×6 all-wheel drive technology, AMG V8 biturbo power and looks that leave no room for any doubt: the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 near-series show vehicle is an off-roader which represents the last word in forward-thrusting power far from the beaten track. 400 kW (544 hp), a 6×6 drive, low-range ratio, five differential locks, portal axles, tyre pressure control system and a special chassis allow this pickup to make good progress in environments where the concept of individual mobility normally bites the dust as soon as the road ends. But anyone who imagines that this is a Dakar-Rally-style vehicle is on the wrong track. Thanks to the wealth of interior enhancements from the AMG stable, the occupants can enjoy the highest possible degree of comfort, even when negotiating the worst that the combined forces of topography and meteorology can throw at them. The exclusive touches even extend to the load area which is finished in solid bamboo.

The Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 near-series show vehicle brings together the best of three worlds. The latest, revised G-Class series-production models lend the superior off-roader the effortless superiority and refinement of a vehicle which has dominated the off-road scene for 34 years. They are also the source of the up-to-date interior concept with the contemporary dashboard featuring impressive new instruments and a large, central colour display. Unreserved robustness as well as practicality and a can-do attitude to off-road driving are the traits inherited from the military and the commercial G-Class models. Finally, the renowned Mercedes-AMG luxury and performance division contributes the superior engine technology and the interior which is as luxurious as it is comfortable.

6×6 technology: to the ends of the earth – and beyond

A look at the key data of the G 63 AMG 6×6 makes it clear that this model’s off-road world begins at a point where anything less than a vehicle with caterpillar tracks would have to capitulate. Six driven wheels, an off-road low-range ratio in the transfer case, portal axles, five differential locks which can be engaged on the move and a tyre-pressure control system which allows the pressure in the huge 37-inch tyres to be adjusted in record time while the vehicle is running – all these are features which one seeks in vain in conventional cross-country vehicles. Together, they ensure that the G 63 AMG 6×6 has driving dynamics which are more than a match for the toughest terrain. As a result, the show vehicle is able to storm up the highest sand dunes with ease while sand tracks hold no fears thanks to its unshakable directional stability. Rocky terrain is negotiated with all the agility of a mountain goat; fording a river becomes almost child’s play thanks to the impressive fording capability of one metre.

A case in point is the drive train: the AMG V8 biturbo engine with 400 kW (544 hp) and 760 newton metres of torque, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission paired with the front drive system from the G 63 AMG and a rear twin drive train from the 6×6 version which has already proven its reliability in service with users such as the Australian army. Plus the ingenious portal axles, which also have military origins, here making their debut in a civilian vehicle.

Mercedes G63 AMG six wheels

Independent and neutral: the chassis

The chassis is largely based on the current production configuration, the only difference being that the helical springs and dampers have been adjusted to take account of the changed characteristics of the three-axle model. For the springs, too, the engineers were able to draw on the comprehensive array of “G” parts, which includes no less than 15 different spring rates. While the front axle takes over the reinforced springs from an armoured special-protection variant, the first rear axle has been given a significantly harder spring rate and the second rear axle a softer one. This set-up, together with the rally-proven, adjustable gas-pressure shock absorbers, results in a perfect symbiosis of sporty dynamism and composed comfort, on or off the road.

Macho outside – S-Class inside

Visually, the G 63 AMG 6×6 pickup leaves no room for any doubt as to its true calling. The large tires on the three axles, the huge ground clearance, the height of almost 2.30 metres and the width of some 2.10 metres as well as the clean-cut lines of the pickup immediately inspire respect. Like the G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models before it, the super off-roader with its 5.87-metre-long body has the characteristic AMG brand face with the “twin blade” radiator grille. Other visual highlights include the use of elegant carbon fibre for the integrated LED light strips above the windscreen as well as for the large flared wheel arches while the rear load area section has a distinctive stainless-steel roll-over bar. The load area, which is lined with particularly tough and durable bamboo, can be accessed by means of a tailboard.

Sporty luxury, the hallmark of AMG, is the defining characteristic of the interior. The G 63 AMG 6×6 welcomes its occupants aboard with an exclusive ambience of classic red or light brown designo leather with contrasting topstitching and attractive diamond-pattern quilting. The four electrically adjustable individual seats are heated and ventilated. The rear compartment is equipped with a special centre console while the roof liner and pillars are finished in an Alcantara® covering. The rear panel is trimmed in leather.

Mercedes-Benz 6x6 six-wheeler

Graz is the center of the “G” world

The two G 63 AMG 6×6 vehicles which have been built to date were developed with Mercedes-Benz at the helm. The Graz-based Mercedes-Benz G-Class development department is the centre of competence for all “G” projects and is responsible for development and series support of the legendary cross-country vehicle. Furthermore, Graz in Austria has been the production site for all civilian and commercial G-Class vehicles since 1979. The response to the near-series show vehicle will determine if and when the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6×6 enters small-series production.

Next-Generation Mercedes GLK AMG Variant Unlikely

AMG Director of Vehicle Development announced that AMG has had discussions about a GLK AMG, but it's unlikely

While we always hate to be the bearers of bad news, it is our job to report to all of our readers, even the GLK lovers, that Tobias Moers, AMG Director of Vehicle Development announced that while AMG has had discussions about a future GLK AMG, they just don’t see a market for one right now.  If you’re a glass half full kind of person, there’s a small glimmer of hope in that statement, “right now”. These statements come out after AMG committed an increased line-up of all-wheel-drive vehicles.

When asked about Audi dilluting their RS lineup with it’s mini SUV, Moer added that, “What they [Audi] did with the RSQ3, I don’t think is the right strategy.” “It’s not enough horsepower for an RS model”.

As for that glimmer of hope that a GLK AMG could someday happen, Moer also noted that “Maybe we will change our mind” “Maybe there will be a change in market when the Porsche [Macan] comes up, but right now, no.” Source: CarAdvice

MEC Design Mercedes SLS Roadster

Berlin based Mercedes tuner MEC Design has taken another look at the Mercedes SLS AMG, this time the SLS AMG Roadster

Berlin based Mercedes-Benz tuner MEC Design has once again taken a look at the Mercedes SLS AMG, this time the SLS AMG Roadster with new photos added today. Though we’ve brought you other Mercedes SLS AMG tuners from MEC Design, this was the first time the extreme German tuner took on the SLS Roadster.

For the exterior, the SLS AMG Roadster by MEC Design is covered in a completely new bodykit that includes a new front bumper with LED-insets, carbon fiber front lip spoiler, rear bumper with carbon fiber GT3 diffuser, side skirts, and a rear trunk lid spoiler that can also come in carbon fiber.

The updated aero kit includes a new carbon fiber front bumper with LED insert and two-piece front spoiler lip, available also as a one-piece front spoiler lip. In the rear, the bumper features an extreme diffuser in carbon fiber finish with the option of installing a GT3, Formula and Black Series style diffuser if you prefer.

Side skirts with optional four LEDs per side are installed with the SLS Roadsters rear spoiler finished in carbon. A two-piece rear window spoiler is finished in the vehicle color and the roof air scoop also is colored to match the vehicle as well.  Of course, being MED Design, all body kit parts are optionally available in a carbon fiber finish.

MEC Design’s exhaust system features a stainless steel sports rear muffler that offers up a monstrous sound when at higher rpm ranges.  The suspension system on the SLS Roadster has been updated with a MEC Design hydraulic coilover suspension kit with LIFT-UP System, this allows for height adjustment with the push of a button. The LIFT-UP system lowers the Mercedes-Benz SLS 30mm at the front axle with the rear axle sitting up to 70mm lower. The SLS rides on 20 inch MEC Design mecxtreme3 wheels.

We’ve posted the complete photo coverage of the MEC Design SLS Roadster below as well as previous photos of their work on the SLS63 AMG Gullwing.

Mercedes A45 AMG World Debut in Geneva

The 2013 Mercedes A45 AMG shared the stage with superstar Usher and Mercedes leader, Dieter Zetsche at Geneva Motor Show

The all new 2013 Mercedes A45 AMG stole the show when it made its official world debut by sharing the stage with international pop superstar Usher and Mercedes-Benz Head, Dieter Zetsche at the Geneva Motor Show. For the show, Mercedes chose to show off the Edition 1 A45 AMG, available for only 12 months and with several cosmetic upgrades both on the interior and exterior.

The A 45 AMG is setting new standards in the high-performance compact class by combining a peak output of  360 hp (265 kW) and maximum torque of 450 Nm with low fuel consumption: roughly 34.5 miles per gallon (6.9 litres of petrol per 100 kilometers).

Mercedes’ compact premium sports car has a two-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine boasts a specific output of 133 kW (181 hp) per litre of displacement – a new record – meaning that the A 45 AMG surpasses even the most powerful super sports cars. Its standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive ensures driving dynamics at the highest level and, thanks to excellent traction, enables the car to complete the burst from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG is embarking on a new era with the A 45 AMG. The attractive entry-level model, available from €49,682.50 (incl. VAT) in Germany, will capture a new target group and new markets for the Affalterbach-based performance brand.
