Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Receives Tuning Kit from MR Car Design

German Car Tuner, MR Car Design, tunes the 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG dubbing it the "Shining Star"

German Car Tuner, MR Car Design, took a short trip back in time and revisited the popular 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. The MR Car Design SL-Class, with updates to the exterior, interior and engine was given the name “Shining Star”.

Updates to the exterior of the 2005 SL include a new Mercedes SLR inspired carbon hood from fellow German Tuner, Kicherer. An updated rear bumper, taken from the facelifted AMG model, with black fender lights and mid-mounted rear brake lights also in black round out the exterior updates.

Powering the MR Car Design’s SL65 AMG is a slightly tweaked ECU, adding 80 hp and 110 Nm of torque to the standard output of the AMG’s 6.0 liter twin-turbo V12 output  All achieved through the use of a new air intake, a custom sports exhaust and an ECU remap.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Wide Body Kit by Tecnocraft

Tecnocraft recently released a new widebody kit for the prior Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG with massively flared arches

The new 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG was just released, potentially leaving owners of the prior style with a bit of design envy. And while it would be easy to sit around and covet the new hotness, the truth is, you’ve got another option:  adding a new widebody kit and interior upgrade to the prior, outgoing style.

Helping you make the transformation, Tecnocraft recently released a new widebody kit for the pre-2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.  As you can see from the photos, massively flared arches, that were done while Josh from Tecnocraft was a fabricator at Evosport, give the car a wider, bolder presence, and also help the C63  AMG accommodate the ADV1 wheels that were worked out with J and Miguel. According to Tecnocraft, simplicity was key in designing the rims, making them look good on a variety of vehicles.

Other highlights of the Tecnocraft Mercedes C63 AMG include a carbon fiber splitter, rear diffuser and wing, and a blacked-out grille with a titanium gray paint job topping it all off.

Inside, there’s a plentiful supply of carbon fiber, with the dashboard, console, and doors all noting carbon fiber accents. Carrying the simplicity of the rims into the interior, Tecnocraft opted for a one-piece carbon fiber seat.  Though the seats look uncomfortable, they were contoured to fit the human body and in addition look damn sexy.

Tecnocraft is currently working on a full body kit that includes a new 3-piece front splitter, a rear trunk/trunklip, an awesomely aggressive rear diffuser, and a vented hood. Everything will be made from true thermoset pre-preg carbon like all Tecnocraft products.  They’re also working on some interior components, including a replacement shift knob, a raw dry-carbon trim kit (the factory kit is clearcoated glossy), pedal upgrades, a center console upgrade, and some other small parts.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Officially Unveiled

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG features new designs, enhanced technology and an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT sports transmission increases efficiency

The high-performance Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan is now more attractive than ever thanks to restyling for the 2012MY. The C63 AMG sedan is complemented by numerous enhancements help maximize performance while significantly reducing fuel consumption. The sedan now features the award-winning AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with standard “Controlled Efficiency” mode along with a new power steering pump that helps reduce the combined fuel consumption by about ten percent (estimated figured for U.S. models pending). The output of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine is unchanged at 451 hp and can be increased to a maximum of 481 hp with the optional AMG Development Package. Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimize the AMG sports suspension. New assistance systems and a new generation of telematics increase both safety and comfort. The U.S. market launch for the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan begins in autumn.

The 2012 C63 AMG sedan features a new radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a single transverse louvre, as well as a new AMG front apron with a lower cross member painted in high-gloss black. Additionally highlights include special AMG daytime running lights and side air outlets which recall those found on the SL63 AMG high-performance roadster. New clear-lens headlamps emphasize the car’s distinctive, confident presence especially when equipped with the optional Lighting Package featuring bi-xenon headlamps. The wide front fenders with the “6.3 AMG” badge and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels — , finished in titanium grey. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tires at the front and rear.

The rear of the C63 AMG now features a new AMG rear apron featuring a distinctive, black diffuser insert with three pronounced fins.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL63 AMG

Under the skin, the top C-Class model boasts a wealth of new technology including the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission – another advanced feature adopted from the SL63 AMG. This innovative transmission uses a wet start-up clutch in place of a traditional torque converter to deliver a much more efficient, agile and direct response. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced thanks to the “Controlled Efficiency” mode and a new power steering pump.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its exceptional flexibility: with four driving modes as well as rev-matching and RACE START functions, it delivers comfortable shifts around town as well as instant response in high performance driving situations. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode is programmed to provide smooth, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed to help maximize fuel efficiency. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility through fast, responsive gear changes and higher revs. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 0.1 seconds.

The naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine with its large displacement of 6,208 cc develops 451 hp at 6,500 rpm and attains a peak torque of 443 lb-ft. at 5,000 rpm. The 2012 C63 AMG retains its predecessor’s position as the top performing model in its segment with 0 to 60 acceleration in just 4.4 seconds while the top speed is 155 mph (electronically regulated).

AMG Development Package: technology transfer from the SLS AMG

Even more dramatic performance is available with the optional AMG Development Package offering 481 hp and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.3 seconds. The Mercedes- AMG engine experts have achieved this increase in output thanks to a technology transfer from the SLS AMG with forged pistons, connecting rods and the lightweight crankshaft all coming from the gullwing model’s engine. The reduced mass inertia of the components – which are 6.6 pounds lighter than those of the standard version – allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev up with even greater ease and agility. Models equipped with the Development Package can be identified by the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey under the hood, the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece front discs and red painted brake calipers at all four corners, a carbon-fiber spoiler lip on the trunk lid and the AMG performance steering wheel in premium leather with a unique grip area.

Optimized suspension, new steering system reduces fuel consumption

The AMG sports suspension includes a redesigned front axle, reinforced rear axle and wider front and rear track has undergone thorough modification and offers greater driving enjoyment and ride comfort at all times. The new stiffer elastokinematics, revised axle kinematics with more negative camber and new rear-axle anti-roll bar with a larger cross-section, result in higher agility and greater lateral acceleration. Additionally, new spring and damper rates have optimized both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as the road noise and tire vibration characteristics.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5 : 1) has a redesigned power-steering pump which contributes to reduced fuel consumption. This new pump only requires energy when the driver is actually making steering movements. Reliable deceleration at all times is provided by the AMG highperformance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs all around.

High Quality Interior

Even a quick glance at the interior of the 2012 C63 AMG sedan reveals the considerable updates, such as the completely new dashboard design with an integrated screen. The new 3D color TFT display in the middle of the redesigned speedometer welcomes the driver upon entry with the AMG logo. The new threespoke AMG performance steering wheel – a feature adopted from the CLS63 AMG – is trimmed in premium leather and features metallic trim elements with a flattened top and bottom sections as well as grip areas which are specially shaped and trimmed in perforated leather for perfect steering control. Aluminum shift paddles facilitate manual gear changes.

Fine trim elements in brushed dark aluminum are found on the dashboard and doors. Situated in the center console surrounded by high-gloss black piano lacquer trim is the new rotary control for selecting the transmission modes C, S, S+, M and RACE START. The special AMG sports seats with integrated head restraints and adaptive backrests are available from launch with combined M-B Tex/DINAMICA black upholstery. (DINAMICA is a new type of breathable manmade fiber). The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in M-B Tex while the center panels of the seat cushions are also upholstered with DINAMICA.

Available as an option, designo leather appointments give the interior of the C63 AMG a very exclusive character: four single colors and three two-tone combinations are available. As a further option, these can be complemented with “extended black designo leather appointments” for the top section of the dashboard and the upper section of the door linings.

Five new driver assistance systems already established in the S-Class and CLS

The 2012 C63 AMG features five new driver assistance systems which are already established in the S-Class flagship model line and the trend-setting CLS. These assistance systems use the latest camera and sensor technology and are designed to combat common causes of accidents. They raise the safety of the C-Class to a new level by warning the driver of a hazard.

  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist
  • ATTENTION ASSIST
  • PARKTRONIC including parking guidance
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind Spot Assist
  • New generation of telematics

The C-Class sees the debut of a new telematics generation which will gradually be introduced in other model series. Major new features include greater operating convenience, larger displays, telephone directory transfer via Bluetooth®, wireless music streaming and a USB interface in the center console.

The navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions including a 3D display with virtual city views, eco-routes and the ability to add waypoints along your journey.

C63 AMG – fast-track to best-seller status

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Spy Photos

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe was recently caught by spy photograhers sporting little camofuflage

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe was recently caught by spy photograhers sporting little camofuflage. The coupe’s front end looks to match the C-Class Sedan’s front end as seen in photos that were leaked last month. Other than modified side sills, a slightly larger rear spoiler, a four-tailpipe exhaust and AMG wheels, the profile is similar to that of the standard C-Class Coupe.

What truly makes the AMG variant stand apart from its slightly larger versions is the naturally-aspirated twin-turbo 5.5 liter V8 engine taken from the S63 AMG and the CLS63 AMG. The C-Class Sedan and Estate both use the 6.3 liter (6208cc) V8 engine with 451 hp (336 kW / 457 PS) and 443 lb-ft (600Nm) of torque. The coupes AMG engine is expected to deliver 422 hp (315 kW / 428 PS) and offer multi-cylinder deactivation for increased fuel efficiency.

The standard model is scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show however there is no word when the C-Class AMG Coupe will be unveiled.

Special thans to Gregor and WCF for the photos.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Photos Leaked

Leaked photos of the facelifted 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Sedan and Estate

In December we brought you the first spy photos of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, and once again, photos of the beautiful beast have been leaked.

Thanks to the new photos, we are able to see the more aggressive front fascia and updated grille as well as LED fog lights and new headlights. With a clear view of the back end, we are able to see that very few updates have been made other than updated tail lights and a restyled bumper.

The leak at Mercedes was not kind enought to give us a peak at the interior; however, the photos leaked in December showed updates similar to the standard C-Class. The AMG version will receive an AMG steering wheel, with deep black trim on the center console along with a heavily supported seat.

As for the engine, the power will continue to be provided by a naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 engine with 451 hp (336 kW / 457 PS) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque. To improve fuel efficiency and performance, there is a seven-speed ‘SpeedShift’ MCT transmission. The sporty sedan will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and average 12.0 L/100km or 19.6 mpg. The C63 AMG Estate goes from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and consumes an average of 12.3 L/100km or 19.1 mpg US.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Spy Photos

The new Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster will be propelled by and AMG 6.3 liter V8 Engine with an output of 420 kW and 650 Nm of torque

Just over a month ago we brought you spy shots of the much anticipated Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and now the spy photographers are at it again with another round.

The sister model to the SLS AMG Gullwing is in its final stages of development and looks to be getting in a bit of testing before September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. While still covered slightly by camouflage, the roadster’s most notable feature, the retractable canvas roof, is clearly visible.

The new Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster will be propelled by and AMG 6.3 liter V8 Engine with an output of 420 kW (571 PS / 563 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. The new roadster will top out at 309 km/h (192 mph) and sprint 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds.

Additional photos of the 2012 Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster can be found here. Thanks to Jeremy and AutoEvolution for the photos.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 Places Third in 24 Hour Dubai Race

Competing as part of its development and testing, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 took third place in the 24H Dubai race

Competing as part of its final development and testing program, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 claimed third place during its first attempt in the 24 Hour Dubai race (January 13-15, 2011). The gullwing model, entered by the private Black Falcon team with the starting number 7, was driven by Thomas Jäger (Munich/Germany, age 34) Jan Seyffarth (Querfurth/Germany, 24), Kenneth Heyer (Wegberg/Germany, 31) and Sean Paul Breslin (London/Great Britain, 31). After a total of 594 laps, the Black Falcon team finished four laps behind the winner. The first race for three SLS AMG GT3s in the 2011 motorsport season also marked the completion to schedule of the development and testing programme which began in 2010.

The SLS AMG GT3 competing for Heico Motorsport with starting number 9, with Bernd Schneider (Bottighofen/Switzerland, age 46), Lance David Arnold (Duisburg/Germany, 24), Andreas Wirth (Heidelberg/Germany, 26), Brice Bosi (Luxembourg, 24) and Christiaan Frankenhout (Amsterdam/Netherlands, 28) behind the wheel, took seventh place overall, coming in 18 laps behind the winner.

The second Black Falcon vehicle, driven by Ralf Schall (Dornstadt/Germany, 41), Timothy Pappas (Boston/USA, 37), Bret Curtis (Valencia/USA, 44) and David Horn (Steinbach/Germany, 37), finished 69 laps behind the winner to claim 24th place. The vehicle with the starting number 8 was involved in a collision through no fault of the driver in lap 76. After a break of a good two hours for repairs, the vehicle resumed the race, making good ground with continual good lap times and claiming twelfth place in the final standings for class 6.

The SLS AMG GT3 with the starting number 9 began the race from the seventh starting position. Starting numbers 7 and 8 entered the fray from positions ten and twelve.

“It was a problem-free race for my team mates and myself in the new SLS AMG GT3. Black Falcon did a great job, and the AMG team provided us with first-class support. It was a good team performance overall which was rewarded with a third place that we can be proud of. Achieving a good finish for all three cars at the first attempt was an important affirmation for all those involved,” observes Thomas Jäger.

“Our first venture here in the 24H Dubai race went off without any technical problems,” notes Bernd Schneider. “We have acquired some important experience and achieved our aim of successfully completing the development and testing programme. With the SLS AMG GT3 we were able to keep pace with the front runners day and night over the long distance. The newly established Heico Motorsport team and my young team mates have done a great job.”

“Successfully finishing a 24-hour race with all three cars at the first attempt is a respectable result,” says Christoph June, SLS AMG project manager. “The high reliability and the good racing performance show that in the SLS AMG GT3 we have developed an appropriate vehicle for the racing series according to the FIA GT3 rules. Delivery of the customer vehicles to the private teams can now go ahead. Thanks are also due to the HWA headed by Gerhard Ungar for their support throughout the development process.”

“The result here in the Dubai 24-hour race proves that our customer sports programme is on the right track for 2011 with the SLS AMG GT3,” adds Uli Fritz, head of AMG Customer Sports. “Not only team owners and racing drivers will be able to drive the gull-winged model – AMG customers and fans will also have an opportunity to get to know the car at first hand through the AMG Driving Academy. I would like to thank the two customer teams, Black Falcon and Heico Motorsport, who raced our three vehicles here in Dubai.”

24-hour race staged for the sixth time, with 84 vehicles in the line-up

The 24-hour Dubai race was held for the 6th time in 2011 at the 5.39-kilometre Grand Prix circuit of the Dubai Autodrome. Over 350 drivers from 20 nations took part in the long-distance race, competing in a total of 84 cars.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, which has been developed in accordance with the GT3 rules of the FIA worldwide governing body for automobile organisations (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), entered the race in class A6. The gull-winged car found itself up against established rival sports cars among the total of 24 vehicles competing in this class. In this first foray into the world of 24-hour racing, the focus was on ongoing technical development and ensuring the car’s stability.

Bernd Schneider and Thomas Jäger have accompanied the SLS AMG GT3 throughout its entire development and testing programme. Schneider is one of the most successful German racing drivers, with five DTM titles, one ITC title and one in the FIA GT championship. Jäger was a DTM driver for Mercedes-Benz from 2000 to 2003. In 2009 he won the championship title in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. In 2010 he raced in the ADAC GT Masters (Germany). Like Bernd Schneider, Thomas Jäger belongs to the team of instructors at the AMG Driving Academy. Since 1 October 2010, Jäger has additionally been active as a coordinator for AMG Customer Sports. As the central point of contact he supports the customer teams in all organisational and technical matters.

Ducati logo alludes to partnership started with AMG in 2010

All three SLS AMG GT3s in the 24H Dubai race sported the Ducati logo. The striking Ducati lettering on the rear wings alludes to the partnership which was agreed in November 2010 between Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Ducati Motor

Holding S.p.A. From the next MotoGP season the AMG logo will feature on the fairings of the Ducati Corse MotoGP team’s racing motorcycles and on the two riders’ leather suits – as Ducati’s official car partner, AMG will also be active in the field of MotoGP in 2011. In addition to our joint marketing and sponsoring activities, the two companies are also examining further activities and strategic measures for the near future.

A win and a third place in the VLN races in autumn 2010

As part of the development and test programme launched in June 2010, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 competed in three VLN races organised by the Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenmeisterschaft N ürburgring in the autumn of 2010. Thomas Jäger and Christopher Haase won the ninth VLN race for Black Flacon in the gull-winged model, while Bernd Schneider and Christian Mamerow (Mamerow Racing team) claimed third place overall in the tenth and final race.

Delivery to begin at the end of February 2011, following FIA homologation

The appearance of the three SLS AMG GT3 in the Dubai 24-hour race brought the development and testing programme to an end as planned. Following homologation and specification of the balance of performance by the FIA worldwide governing body for automobile organisations, delivery of the SLS AMG GT3 will commence at the end of February 2011. The sales price will be € 334,000 Euro (net)/€ 397,460 (incl. 19 % VAT). Production of the customer vehicles began at the end of December 2010.

SLS AMG GT3 integrated into the AMG Driving Academy from the outset

Customers of the AMG Driving Academy will be able to drive the SLS AMG GT3 on the race track themselves at selected events in 2011. The concept provides for the exclusive use of SLS AMG GT3 vehicles for the MASTERS skill level, which requires the highest standard of driving skills. With these unique events, the AMG Driving Academy is offering an opportunity to experience motor racing at first hand at an unprecedentedly high standard of safety.

Racing version of the gull-winged vehicle in accordance with FIA GT3 near-series rules

The racing version of the gull-winged car is designed as a customer sports car for short- and long-distance races in accordance with the FIA GT3 near-series rules. Lightweight design throughout and optimization of the chassis, brake system and aerodynamics provide for uncompromising driving dynamics. The maximum power output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine with dry sump lubrication is specified by the FIA in accordance with the balance of performance. This is intended to ensure a level playing field for the participating racing vehicles. Classification, including stipulation of the vehicle’s kerb weight, is to take place in the spring of 2011.

The solution whereby the eight-cylinder engine has been fitted as low as possible as a front-mid engine behind the front axle and combined with a transmission on the rear axle leads to a favourable weight ratio and a low centre of gravity. The transaxle configuration also optimises handling and traction. The six-gear racing transmission is connected to the V8 engine with high bending and torque resistance by means of a torque tube. The lightweight aluminium chassis with double wishbones and the steel racing brake system with racing ABS provide for perfect race circuit performance.

Carbon safety cell ensures exemplary standard of safety

Similarly to in the DTM vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, the seat shell of the SLS AMG GT3 is installed in a safety cell consisting of high-strength carbon (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic). As a result of its special design, the safety cell bolted to the roll cage and the aluminium spaceframe offers markedly improved

protection for the driver’s shoulders, hips and legs. It is additionally compatible with the HANS system (Head and Neck Support). The seat shell is provided with an individual foam filling and incorporates a six-point seat belt to ensure superlative occupant safety. Additional safety is provided by the roll cage made of steel, which also further reinforces the aluminium spaceframe.

2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class In-Depth Overview

The 2012 CLS63 AMG continues the success story of the previous models, CLS55 AMG and CLS63 AMG

Exciting design, ultimate performance and ground-breaking efficiency: this is what the new Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG is all about. The top-of-the-range version of the four-door coupé is equipped with the newly developed AMG V8 biturbo engine, featuring a peak output of up to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, as well as the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. On top of this, the vehicle’s fuel con-sumption of 9.9 litres per 100 km (NEDC) represents an improvement of 32 percent compared with the previous model. The combination of an AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system and new front axle, newly developed electromechanical AMG sports parameter steering, and also optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system, is synonymous with maximum driving dynamics. Visually, the CLS 63 AMG impresses with its athletic appearance and distinctive exterior and interior design. The model’s standard specification also includes innovative LED High Performance headlamps.

“The new CLS 63 AMG continues the success story of the previous models, the CLS 55 AMG and CLS 63 AMG, which have delighted our customers all around the world since 2004”, according to Ola Källenius, Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The CLS 63 AMG is a unique high-performance car – it sets new standards in design, performance and efficiency.”

As with the S 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG, drivers of the CLS 63 AMG will benefit from an eight-cylinder powerhouse, designated internally as the M 157: the new AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine boasts a combination of innovative high-tech components which, in addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, also include a full aluminium crankcase, four-valve technology with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, generator management and stop/start system. The weight-optimized AMG sports exhaust system with dual twin chrome tailpipes ensures a distinctive engine sound. With a displacement of 5461 cc, the eight-cylinder engine develops a peak output of 386 kW (525 hp) and torque of 700 Nm. In conjunction with the AMG Performance package, these figures increase to 410 kW (557 hp) and 800 Nm. Both variants of the CLS 63 AMG achieve exceptional performance: acceleration from zero to 100 km/h takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively, and the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

The major difference between both power units is the increase in the maximum charge-air pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar. In addition, the CLS 63 AMG with the AMG Performance package features a special high-quality genuine carbon fibre engine cover.

Quantum leap: fuel consumption reduced by 32 percent

Despite a significant performance increase compared with the previous model, which had a naturally aspirated AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine producing 378 kW (514 hp) and 630 Nm of torque, the new CLS 63 AMG is some 4.6 litres, or 32 percent, more economical – which represents a quantum leap forward. The NEDC fuel consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 km equates to a CO2 output of 231 g/km. Thanks to these figures, the new V8 Coupé from AMG not only undercuts all of its direct competitors in the four-door high-performance coupé segment, but is also more fuel efficient than significantly lower-powered vehicles. Both performance variants have identical fuel consumption and CO2 figures.

Exclusive: AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

An important contribution towards achieving the unrivalled consumption figures has been made by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission, a component used exclusively at Mercedes-AMG. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, the MCT transmission does away with the torque converter; instead, it makes use of a compact, wet start-up clutch. Also fitted as standard equipment is the stop/start function: it is permanently active in the transmission’s Controlled Efficiency (“C”) mode, and switches the eight-cylinder engine off when the car comes to a stop. At the same time, “C” mode also means a “soft” accelerator response set-up with convenient and early gearshifts; moving off generally takes place in second gear. A green “ECO” symbol in the AMG instrument cluster shows the driver that the stop/start function is active.

The engine and transmission come across as much more agile in the “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) modes; in addition, the stop/start function is switched off. In “S”, “S+” and “M” modes, the engine management system partially suppresses the cylinders: interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts than before. The highly emotional vocals are an appealing side effect of this lightning-fast process. An automatic double-declutching function and RACE START function are also included as standard.

Autonomously developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension

The suspension, steering and braking system of the new CLS 63 AMG complement the high-tech drive system perfectly. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle, as well as automatic level control, is enhanced further by an electronically controlled damping system; it automatically adjusts the damping characteristics depending on the driving conditions and reduces the roll angle of the body. The result: lightning-fast adjustment between optimum driving comfort and the best possible agility. The driver can switch between the three suspension modes of “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus” at the press of a button.

The autonomously developed front axle, with a track width which is 24 mm wider, is the optimum match for the newly developed electromechanical AMG sports parameter steering. It features a more direct ratio, variable power assistance which adapts according to the suspension mode, and also contributes towards reducing fuel consumption by up to 0.3 litre (7 g CO2) in the ECE fuel cycle, since the steering assistance system only draws power when the vehicle is actually being steered.

AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system available as an option

Perfect deceleration even when driving extremely briskly is provided by the AMG high-performance braking system with 360 mm, internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round. Particularly resistant, motorsports-tested composite technology is used on the front axle. The optional AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system with yet larger brake discs guarantees an even higher level of braking performance as well as lower unsprung masses. Good contact with the road, meanwhile, is provided courtesy of the titanium grey-painted, high-sheen AMG light-alloy wheels featuring a new triple-spoke design and fitted with 255/35 R 19 tyres on the front and 285/30 R 19 tyres on the rear. The AMG light-alloy wheels are manufactured using the weight-optimized flow-forming process, as already used on the SLS AMG.

Intelligent lightweight construction: making a significant contribution to efficiency

The highest level of engineering is also reflected in the body of the new CLS 63 AMG: the intelligent lightweight construction makes a significant contribution towards addressing the classic conflicting goals of low weight and high strength. Like the SLS AMG, the CLS 63 AMG is also fitted with doors featuring a full aluminium construction. They consist of deep-drawn aluminium panels with extruded sections, and are around 24 kg lighter compared with conventional steel doors. In addition, the bonnet, front wings, boot lid, parcel shelf, various support sections as well as major parts of the chassis and engine are all made from aluminium too.

Light-years ahead: LED High Performance headlamps as standard

The CLS 63 AMG is the first passenger car in the world to offer LED High Performance headlamps as standard, which combine the exciting colour elements of LED technology – similar to daylight – with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon generation. For the first time ever this new light system provides the Intelligent Light System already proven in Mercedes models fitted with bi-xenon headlamps in combination with LED technology – including the active light function with LED for the first time too. The headlamps, with their 71 LED lamps in total, underline the unmistakable appearance of the CLS 63 AMG. The light specialists from Mercedes-Benz have for the first time been able to use LED technology in the Adaptive Highbeam Assist, resulting in an entirely new level of safety when driving at night.

In contrast to the first vehicles equipped with LED headlamps, no compromises are now necessary with respect to the functionality and performance of the lighting technology. There are further arguments for the new, LED-based lighting technology: the average operating life of an LED is around 10,000 hours, around five times longer than that of a xenon light; moreover, LED headlamps most closely approximate the colour temperature of daylight. This means that LED light is in keeping with normal human perception patterns. Studies have shown that the closer the colour of artificial light comes to daylight, the less strain there is on the eyes. With a colour temperature of 5500 kelvin, LED light is closer to daylight (6500 K) than xenon light (4200 K). The LED daytime driving lights specific to AMG are also presented in two characteristic light strips integrated into the AMG front apron.

Exterior design inspired by the SLS AMG

When viewed from the front, the new CLS 63 AMG evokes associations with the SLS AMG – the radiator grille in particular, with its large Mercedes star and wing-shaped horizontal slats, appears to have been inspired by the gullwing. The top-of-the-range AMG model distinguishes itself from the other CLS variants with its distinctive bonnet, wider mudguards with “V8 BITURBO” logo and a specific AMG front apron with black painted cross member. Eye-catching features at the rear include the diffuser insert, the AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid, the AMG sports exhaust system with dual twin chrome tailpipes, and – as also featured on the SLS AMG – integrated rear foglamp. The AMG bodystyling perfectly matches the typical CLS outline, which is essentially characterised by the elegantly long proportions, the lateral dropping line and the muscular sports car-like shoulder line above the rear axle.

Exclusive atmosphere in the interior

This philosophy also continues through consistently into the interior. All of the AMG-specific design and appointment features ideally supplement the redesigned CLS interior. The wrap-around effect in the cockpit, with its high line which sweeps from the driver’s door over the instrument panel support and across to the front passenger door, is generously flanked by high-quality trim elements – available in black piano lacquer as standard in the top-of-the-range AMG model. Quality materials and workmanship meet the very highest of standards and help to guarantee a particularly exclusive atmosphere. The extensive range of standard appointments also includes AMG sports seats in nappa leather, a new three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles and flattened top and bottom sections, and the AMG DRIVE UNIT with compact E-SELECT selector lever.

New driving assistance systems: greater safety

More than a dozen driving assistance systems on the new CLS help to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the severity of an accident. The Active Blind Spot Assist and the Active Lane Keeping Assist are new.

Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver if the short-range radar sensors detect that there is a danger of collision if the vehicle is about to change lanes. Should the driver ignore the warnings and come dangerously close to the vehicle in the next lane, Active Blind Spot Assist will intervene. By applying braking force to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle via the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, a yaw movement is created which counteracts the collision course.

Active Lane Keeping Assist is now also linked to the ESP® for the first time. This system kicks into action if the driver inadvertently drifts over a solid line to the right or left of a lane. In this case, Active Lane Keeping Assist brakes the opposite wheels and thereby prevents the vehicle from crossing the line. A display on the instrument cluster warns the driver at the same time. If broken lane markings

are crossed, the system controls an electric pulse generator in the steering wheel which generates vibrations for a short time – a discreet but highly effective cue to countersteer immediately. Before the braking system intervenes, the steering wheel always vibrates to provide a warning.

AMG Engines Expected to Power Infiniti’s Performance Line

Nissan's Luxury Line, Infiniti, is considering all options for their Performance Line, including AMG Engines

Back in April, we brought you news of a partnership between Nissan and Daimler and now we have news that certain Infiniti models may carry “Powered by AMG” badges. Nissan’s Luxury Line, Infiniti, is considering all options for their Performance Line, dubbed Infiniti Hot Models by British Magazine Autocar.  Options include styling add-ons to full-blown Performance Hot Models with AMG Engines built on the main production line.

According to Autocar sources, one of the engines under consideration is the new 3.5 liter turbocharged V6 being developed by Mercedes-Benz tuned to around the 400 bhp (406 PS / 298 kW) mark. It would replace the 3.7 liter in the Infiniti G series.

Another would be the 6.3 liter V8 from AMG to power the IPL (Infiniti Performance Line) variant of the M series sedan – a rival to the BMW M5. The price of such an M IPL would be around £60,000 (€70,524/$94,624) in the U.K., making the model competitive with cars like the Jaguar XFR but still below the Mercedes E63 AMG which features the same AMG engine.

2010 DTM Championship Goes To AMG Mercedes C-Class Driver Paul Di Resta

Bruno Spengler 13th in the race after qualifying crash and 17th starting position, and third in the championship

Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) is the 2010 DTM champion. The Scotsman finished the 11th and final round of the 2010 DTM at Shanghai, China in second place and took the title with 71 points.

Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) won the final race on a temporary street circuit in Shanghai’s district Pudong and ended the championship runner-up with 67 points. This victory was the ninth for Mercedes-Benz in 2010 out of the 11 races. Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class), overall leader before the race after eight podiums out of the previous 10 races, had started 17th on the grid after a qualifying accident and ended up 13th in the race and third in the championship with 66 points.

It is Paul Di Resta’s first DTM championship title after he had been runner-up in 2008. For Mercedes-Benz, it is the 10th drivers’ title since the brand entered the DTM as a works outfit in 1988: Before this year’s title win, Bernd Schneider took six championships, Klaus Ludwig two and Gary Paffett one.

Salzgitter/Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG with Spengler/Paffett are first in the team ranking already since Hockenheim six weeks ago; they have now 133 points.

Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) finished sixth. David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) came home eighth and scored his first championship point in the final race of his first DTM season. Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) ended up 10th ahead of Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class). CongFu Cheng (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) finished 15th ahead of Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class).

The race was red-flagged after 50 of 60 scheduled laps, after the track was blocked momentarily following a short coming-together of Susie Stoddart and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi).

  • The start:The race was started behind the Safety Car which drove ahead of the field for three laps. After that, overtaking was allowed only after turn three. For the fourth time this year, Paul Di Resta started from pole position, followed by Gary Paffett and Jamie Green. Due to an accident in the first qualifying, Bruno Spengler lined up 17th on the grid.
  • Lap 15:Bruno Spengler was 15th when he pitted for the first time.
  • Lap 17:Paul Di Resta came into the pits from the lead, followed by Susie Stoddart (ninth) one lap later.
  • Lap 20:David Coulthard (fifth) came in for the first time; Bruno Spengler (17th) came in for the second time.
  • Lap 21:Respective first pit stops by Jamie Green (second) and Ralf Schumacher (fifth). Maro Engel pitted one lap later.
  • Lap 23:Gary Paffett (leader) pitted for the first time; Susie Stoddart came in for the second time.
  • Lap 29: Gary Paffett (fourth) completed his second stop followed by CongFu Cheng (second) for his first stop one lap later.
  • Lap 31:Second stop by Jamie Green (third).
  • Lap 33:Paul Di Resta (second) came in for the second time.
  • Lap 38:CongFu Cheng received a 5sec pit stop penalty because of driving through the working zone during his first pit stop.
  • Lap 39: Second pit stop by David Coulthard (second). When he resumed, he stalled the engine and lost several seconds.
  • Lap 43:Second pit stop by CongFu Cheng (fourth). One lap later, Ralf Schumacher (second) was the last driver to complete his second stop.
  • Lap 44:All drivers had completed their two mandatory pit stops. Gary Paffett was in the lead ahead of Paul Di Resta.
  • Lap 50:After a short coming-together of Susie Stoddart and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi), the road was blocked for a moment and the race was red-flagged for good. Gary Paffett won ahead of Paul Di Resta who took the title. Full points were awarded as more than 75 per cent of the scheduled 60 laps had been completed.

Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) winner: “It was a tough race and with my win I achieved everything possible. However, I had lost a few points during the season; otherwise the fight with Paul today would have been more exciting. Congratulations to him, he had a great season and deserves the championship.”

Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) second and champion:”I am really happy about my DTM title win – a dream came true. I thank my entire team and everybody at Mercedes-Benz for this great season.”

Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) sixth: “Sixth place is ok, although third position was in reach. Unfortunately, I got stuck in traffic after my first pit stop so we decided to pit again early, but so I lost a few places. However, I am the best driver with a last year’s car, like I was in 2009, so I have reached my target for this year.”

David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) eighth: “Yesterday, I was sixth and achieved my best qualifying result in the DTM, today I scored my first point and posted the fastest lap of the race. This is a nice end of my first DTM season. Unfortunately I lost a few places in traffic – an even better result would have been possible today.”

Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) 10th:”The circuit was a real challenge and the organizers did everything for the safety. It was a good decision to start behind the Safety Car. For this season, I had wished for more good results. My speed was always there, but if you start too far in the back of the field, it is not easy to show that.”

Susie Stoddart (TV-Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) 11th: “An uneventful race for me. Without yesterday’s crash and with a better grid position points would have been possible today. Well done to Paul on his championship win and thank you to my Persson team and Mercedes-Benz for the great support throughout this season.”

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) 13th: “I look back to a good season; however, in the last event I made a mistake in qualifying which almost decided the championship already before the race. I suffered from understeer today which was probably a consequence of my accidents on Friday and Saturday. Congratulations to Paul on his title win.”

CongFu Cheng (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) 15th:”Unfortunately, I made a mistake during my first pit stop and received a time penalty. Otherwise, a result between 10th and 12th positions would have been possible; my speed was not bad. I thank my team for a great first year in the DTM and congratulations to Paul on the title win.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) 16th: “It is like a little victory that I was able to start the race, following my accident on Friday. I thank my team for the great job fixing the car in time for the race.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:”A difficult final of a great 2010 DTM season with Paul as the deserved Champion and Gary as the Shanghai winner – for the second time after he had won also the so far only race here in 2004.

“This season, Paul did the best job of all – Bruno Spengler who arrived here as the overall leader would have deserved as well as Gary Paffett – but in the end Paul achieved the well-deserved title win.

“A cordial thank you for the first three places in the championship and nine wins out of 11 races to everybody in the HWA team under Gerhard Ungar, to the Mücke and the Persson team.

“I also want to thank all active and hardworking colleagues who are usually not on the front row – our specialists of organisation, media, marketing and controlling – and, of course, also the ladies in our office, who are always working at real “race speed” day-to-day and always precisely.

“There are no great victories without a great team, and we have a great team.”

Paul Di Resta, the 2010 DTM Champion

Paul Di Resta (24) is the 2010 DTM Champion. He won the title with second place in the season’s finale which had been staged at Shanghai for the first time. Paul thus overtook his team mate Bruno Spengler who had started the final race as the points leader. The race in China was Paul’s 42nd DTM race. He won six of them, started from pole position six times and posted seven fastest race laps.

Paul Di Resta is a cousin of former Mercedes-Benz DTM driver Dario Franchitti, who won the US IndyCar series for the third time and the Indy 500 for the second time in 2010. Paul began racing karts at the age of eight. In 2000, he won the McLaren Mercedes Champions of the Future kart series. Three years later, he took part in his first car race in the British Formula Renault. In 2004, he won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award and became a Mercedes-Benz Junior.

Racing for English team Manor Motorsport, Paul Di Resta entered the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2005, finishing his debut year 10th overall after three pole positions and one podium place. In the following year, he won five races and clinched the championship ahead of the 2010 Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel.

In 2007, Paul moved up to DTM and finished his second race in the championship in second place – with a last year’s car. At the end of that year he was fifth overall. One year later, now racing a new model, Di Resta took his first DTM race win and finished the year runner-up. In 2009, Paul Di Resta was third overall in the DTM and also became test and reserve driver for Force India Mercedes in Formula One.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Spied With Its Top Down

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is spied testing with minimal camouflage and its top down

Although we still have some time to wait before the forthcoming Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster makes its official debut, new spy photos have emerged showing the model nearly undisguised, with its top down.  When it premiers, notable changes will include an electronic soft top; the addition of the AIRCAP and AIRSCARF technology that first debuted in the E-Class Cabriolet; and of course, traditional doors (as opposed to the current SLS’s Gullwing doors).

We’ll keep you posted as new details of the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster are revealed; in the meantime, check out more SLS Roadster pics in the gallery below.  Thanks to Markus Jordan for the tip.

The New Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 Technology

This racing version of the gullwing model was designed as a customer sports car for competing in race series

Automotive fascination combined with spectacular racing car design – the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. This racing version of the gullwing model was designed as a customer sports car for competing in race series according to the near-series FIA GT3 rulebook. Outstanding driving dynamics are ensured by uncompromising lightweight construction and specific modifications to the suspension, brakes and aerodynamics.

The purist design of the SLS AMG, with its long bonnet, flat greenhouse positioned well to the rear and short rear end, is enhanced even further by the GT3 variant. The modifications to the body give the gullwing an even more spectacular appearance. The aim is a further improvement in aerodynamic performance.

At the front the GT3 racing car has a new front apron with larger air intakes: the wide aperture below the characteristic radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a wing-shaped transverse fin supplies the engine oil cooler and brake discs with cooling air. The two air intakes below the vertically arranged bi-xenon headlamps have the same function. Downforce at the front axle is provided by four externally mounted “flics” and the carbon-fibre front splitter: this blends into the smooth underbody cladding which ends with the rear diffuser.

The bonnet has a central aperture to dissipate the engine heat. The hot air is vented in the wheel arches from side vents in the front wings. Particularly lightweight polycarbonate glazing is used all-round.

The front and rear wheel arches are flared to make space for the large racing tyres. With a width of 1990 millimetres, the body of the GT3 is a good 50 millimetres wider than that of the standard SLS AMG. The new side skirts have apertures for cooling the rear brakes. The smooth underbody is visible at the lower edges of the side skirts. The standardised filler pipe for the fast-refuel system is accommodated in the B-pillar. The 120-litre fuel tank is centrally located behind the driver.

Wide rear apron of carbon-fibre

Viewed from the rear, the SLS AMG GT3 impresses with its sheer width. The boot lid is surmounted by a wide carbon-fibre rear aerofoil, which has multiple adjustments and allows a perfect setup for the type of racetrack concerned. The new rear apron features two apertures designed to vent the rear wheel arches. The carbon-fibre rear diffuser is another eye-catching feature: as an extension to the smooth underbody, it gradually rises in the rear axle area and generates a downforce thanks to its shape. The overall aerodynamic concept of the SLS AMG GT3 was refined and finalised in extensive wind tunnel and racetrack tests. All the resulting measures ensure a high level of aerodynamic efficiency, and also guarantee effective cooling of thermally highly stressed components.

The rain light prescribed by the rulebook is integrated into the boot lid – it must remain permanently switched on if the weather conditions are poor.

Near-series AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine

As prescribed by the FIA GT3 rules, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is practically identical to that in the standard model. Thanks to its lower weight, the GT3 will considerably better the already outstanding acceleration of the standard model – 3.8 seconds from zero to 100 km/h; depending on the final drive ratio, the top speed will exceed 300 km/h. Typical of an AMG: the thrilling and characteristic eight-cylinder sound.

The peak output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid-engine with dry-sump lubrication is determined by the FIA according to the “Balance of Performance”. This is to ensure equal chances for all the participating racing cars. Classification, which also determines the kerb weight of the vehicle and other factors, will take place in spring 2011.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine also has a dry sump lubrication system in the racing model. Using vacuum and pressure pumps, as well as an external oil tank, makes it possible to dispense with a conventional sump. This technology ensures reliable engine lubrication even under the high lateral acceleration forces encountered on the racetrack. Dry sump lubrication also allows a low installed position for the V8 engine – one of the key technological highlights of the SLS AMG. Installing the eight-cylinder as low as possible, as a front-mid-engine behind the front axle, and combining it with a transmission located at the rear axle, leads to a favourable weight distribution. The transaxle arrangement also optimises handling and traction.

Six-speed racing transmission with sequential gear-changes

Unlike in the standard model, power in the SLS AMG GT3 is transferred by a six-speed racing transmission with sequential gear-changes. Thanks to its compact construction, this race-tested transmission has advantages in terms of packaging – after all, the GT3 version has a smaller ground clearance than the standard model. The driver shifts the gears using two shift paddles on the steering wheel. The transmission is mounted directly on the rear axle, and connected to the V8 engine via a flexurally and torsionally rigid torque tube. This has decisive advantages with respect to handling dynamics, as this sophisticated solution enables the entire powertrain to be configured with far less free play. In conjunction with the traction control sysem, a multi-disc locking differential integrated into the transmission ensures outstanding acceleration. A drive shaft rotates at the engine speed within this torque tube. As in the standard model, and also the Mercedes-Benz C-Class DTM racing cars, the shaft is made from carbon-fibre (CFRP).

Double wishbone axles of forged aluminium

The vehicle concept of the SLS AMG is predestined for top-class racetrack performance, with a long wheelbase, a low centre of gravity and a wide track. Its strengths include precise over/understeer characteristics, first-class agility, low inertia during fast changes of direction and high physical limits when cornering.

Very few modifications were required for perfect racetrack performance: the lowered, lightweight aluminium suspension with double wishbones all-round has the ideal kinematics. Multiple adjustments allow the best possible adaptation to the relevant racetrack characteristics and prevailing weather conditions. Not only the spring and damper setups, but also the track width and camber, the suspension height and the stabilisers at the front and rear axles can be adjusted.

Steel motorsports braking system with racing ABS

The rack-and-pinion steering with a more direct ratio and servo assistance supports the agile handling. Behind the 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with central locking, effective, fade-resistant deceleration is ensured by a steel motorsports braking system. The SLS AMG GT3 has precisely calculated cooling ducts: apertures in the front apron and ahead of the rear wheels supply the brake discs with a cooling airflow. All four brake discs are ventilated, grooved and perforated. Six-piston fixed callipers at the front and four-piston fixed callipers at the rear provide very generous brake lining surfaces. An anti-lock braking system specially configured for the racetrack is standard equipment.

The size 12 x 18-inch (front) and 13 x 18-inch (rear) AMG light-alloy wheels with central locking are shod with racing tyres. Depending on the conditions, untreaded slicks, intermediates or rain tyres are used. The classic multi-spoke design assists ventilation of the braking system. Rapid pitstops and wheel-changes are assured by the pneumatic jacking system integrated into the underbody: four pneumatic jacks lift the GT3 racing car by around 190 millimetres to allow very rapid tyre-changes by the pit crew.

Functional racing car atmosphere, exemplary safety level

The interior of the SLS AMG GT3 has a distinctively functional racing atmosphere. As in the standard gullwing model, the powerfully arching wing section of the dashboard gives an impression of width. Strikingly integrated into the dashboard, the air vents galvanised in “Silver Shadow” have adjustable, cruciform nozzles reminiscent of an aircraft’s jet engines.

In a set-up similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz DTM vehicles, the seat shell is located in a high-strength carbon-fibre (CFRP) safety cell. Thanks to its special form, the safety cell, which is bolted to the rollover cage and the aluminium spaceframe, offers far greater protection for the driver’s shoulders, hips and legs. The seat shell is individually foam-padded, features the HANS (Head and Neck Support) system, and is equipped with a six-point seat belt, thus maximising occupant safety. Additional safety is provided by the steel rollover cage, which also gives further reinforcement to the aluminium spaceframe. In conjunction with the 120-litre CFRP safety tank with inner bladder positioned on the rear axle, and the optimised fire extinguisher system, the SLS AMG GT3 provides an exemplary level of safety that is unmatched by any other current GT3 vehicle.

The central display is ideally positioned within the driver’s field of vision and provides all the relevant information such as track speed, engine rpm, operating temperatures, lap times and gear selection. The racing steering wheel with shift paddles for gear changes allows perfect control of the vehicle, and its quick-release mechanism makes access and egress much easier. The buttons on the steering wheel boss enable the driver to activate additional functions such as the two-way radio, headlamp flasher or drinking function. Additional controls are located on the centre console. Here the driver can start the AMG V8 engine and adjust the traction control, as well as engage reverse gear or – if the worst comes to the worst – activate the integrated fire extinguisher system. Brake balance adjustment is also possible.

Testing program with Bernd Schneider started in June 2010

Development of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 is proceeding on schedule; the testing program began on the Lausitz Eurospeedway in June 2010. Bernd Schneider (46) – who has been a Mercedes-Benz works driver for many years and is also an AMG brand ambassador – and Thomas Jäger (33) were brought on board as test drivers. With five DTM titles, one ITC championship and one FIA GT championship to his name, Bernd Schneider is one of the most successful German racing drivers. Thomas Jäger is the reigning Porsche Carrera Cup (Germany) champion, and drove in the DTM for Mercedes-Benz between 2000 and 2003. This season he is lining up in the ADAC GT-Masters (Germany).

For Bernd Schneider, who will be doing the bulk of the test driving, developing a basic setup is a top priority. “The SLS AMG has excellent genes for being successful in motor racing. Even on my first fast laps at the Lausitz Eurospeedway, it was obvious that the GT3 version of the gullwing model has just what it takes to be a hit on the racetrack. The combination of optimum weight distribution, a low centre of gravity, a powerful AMG V8 engine and efficient aerodynamics already indicates that the SLS AMG GT3 will be very competitive.”

First competitive action in the VLN race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife

As well as being tried out at the Lausitz Eurospeedway and the Sachsenring circuit, the SLS AMG GT3 is also being tested on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (North Loop) – under realistic racing conditions. On top of the pure testing and tuning drives, the gullwing model is also racing in the 2010 VLN endurance championship.

The extensive development and testing program focuses on various suspension settings, engine mappings, tyre mixes and aerodynamics configurations. In addition to this, the complete package has to prove its durability and serviceability. At the same time, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine and the six-speed racing transmission with sequential gearshift are being run on the test stations at HWA AG. Plus the entire vehicle is being tested on a driving-dynamics test station.

Teams can count on service and replacement parts

Mercedes-AMG and HWA will also be assisting the teams with service and replacement parts within Europe. The concept for the 2011 European motorsport season envisages offering comprehensive support in the three key championships and the major 24-hour races involving the SLS AMG GT3. A 24-hour replacement-part service and a technical hotline will be available for all other races and test drives.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Tuner by Romeo Ferraris

The tuning program gives the C63 AMG a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4 seconds flat, compared to the 4.5 seconds from the production version

The experience gained within the Superstars Championship is the base of the preparation program developed by Romeo Ferraris for the Mercedes C63 AMG, which has now 540 bhp and is able to pass over 300 km/h. The interventions include an electronic upgrade, an optimized exhaust system, racing rims and an adjustable set up.

September, 29th 2010 – The 457 bhp of the Mercedes C63 AMG satisfy lots of fast drivers. Neverthless, the demanding owners, who watch passionately the C63 AMGs racing in the Superstars Championship, can have more. Romeo Ferraris’ Racing Team made a preparation program which transfers the gained experience on the circuits of the Series (with the cars of Michela Cerruti, Max Pigoli and Francesco Sini) to efficient tecnical solutions for the street version. There interventions modify radically the car’s behavior, turning it into a racing supercar, thanks to an original aerodynamic kit, 540 bhp, a specific set up completely adjustable in height and calibration, and very light 18″ racing rims (they weight 10 kg each).

DESIGN

The proposed aerodynamic kit is just an anticipation of the new kit we are developing, which will recall Romeo Ferraris’ car racing in the Superstars Championship. The first thing that distinguisces RF’s C63 AMG is a special cromo painting, which has also been used on Francesco Sini’s car. The factory’s technicians have also projected a front bumper, which is able to guarantee more aerodynamical load thanks to its original design in the lower part. To efasize even more the aggressivity of the car, the bumper cut’s design has been studied again, the grids, the Mercedes badge, the lateral air intakes, the lights’ parabola have been painted black. The roof wrapping, rigorously black (or any other coloro can choose from the catalogue), completes the setting.

INTERIORS

At Romeo Ferraris we know that it is difficult to make a supercar’s interiours even more exclusive, but we also know that details make the difference. That’s why the specialists of the personalizations decided to recall the cromo paintings of the chassis using silver stitching for seats steering wheel, which is also embellished by the wrapping in alcantara. First quality leather has been used to wrap all the plastics, from the dashboard to the door pannels, in order to let the driver get lost in an inviting atmosphere, far away from the rough and cold standard cabin.

ENGINE

The core of Romeo Ferraris’ tuning program, developed by the racing team, is the 6,2 litre V8 AMG engine, which is able to deliver 540 bhp after the intervention, getting closer to the Romeo Ferraris’ C63 AMG, racing in the Superstars Series. It has been the great experience made in years of competition that enabled the technicians to obtain the maximum performance out of the electronic upgrade and to develop a new high performance exhaust line, which replaces all the series components, starting from the manifold to the exhaust pipes, with racing derivatives components (the exhaust is road-legal). The C63 AMG-RF needs 4 seconds to get to 100 km/h from 0, and reaches 200km/h in 12,5 seconds, while the standard equipe car takes 4,5 seconds from 0 to 100km/h, and 15,2 seconds from 0-200km/h. The maximum speed? Be prepared to pass 300km/h!

SET UP AND BRAKES

Romeo Ferraris’ tuning programs permits everyday use of the car on the street without any problems, but this C63 AMG has also been developed for the circuit. The evidence for it is the choice to equip the car with the same alloy wheels used in the Superstars Series. We are talking about the 18″ Arcasting GTR, which weight only 10 kg thanks to a special ultralight alluminium alloy (Al Si7) and to the manufacturing process. The feeling with the asphalt was emphasized even more with the Yokohama Advan Sport tyres (front 235/40 R18, rear 255/35 R18) and with the new racing shocks, completely adjustable in height, compression, extension and calibration, which lower the car up to -50mm, thanks to a short spring, developed specifically for this set up. If this is not enough, it’s possible to improve the answer to stress by replacing the shocks’ support with a poliuretan components kit. Poliuretan is harder than rubber and stiffens effectively the car. The final result is a car with better handeling and more precise in getting into the corners, with all the advantages of an adjustable set up, which can be adapted to driving styles and situations (street or circuit), favouring comfort or dynamic skills. If the power would not have been increased, these interventions would be more than enaugh, but, considering the 540 bhp, Romeo Ferraris’ tecnicians decided to modify the differential’s calibration, taking it to 40% to guarantee maximum motility, and to offer the chance to install a Brembo breaking system composed by 6 piston calipers with 380mm rotors for the front and 4 piston calipers with 345mm rotors for the rear.

Mercedes-Benz DTM: Oschersleben Race Results

Bruno Spengler clinched his seventh podium finish out of eight races, the 21st of his DTM career, and maintained the overall lead

Like at Brands Hatch two weeks ago, Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) won the 2010 DTM’s eighth round at Oschersleben; like two weeks ago, Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) finished second. After 50 laps (184.800 kms), Paul came home 1.271sec ahead of Bruno.

Mercedes-Benz achieved their 75th victory of the new DTM 117 races since 2000. It is the 159th DTM win out of 328 races for the brand since Mercedes-Benz entered the championship as a factory team in 1988 and the seventh out of eight races this season – the sixth in a row. Paul Di Resta took his fifth win in his 39th DTM race.

Bruno Spengler clinched his seventh podium finish out of eight races 2010, the 21st of his DTM career, and maintained the overall lead with 60 points. Paul is second with 53 points ahead of Gary with 44 points. Mattias Ekström (Audi) is fourth on 34 points. In the final three races. A driver can score a maximum of 30 points.

A first decision was made in the team ranking: Salzgitter/Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG with Spengler/Paffett lead with 104 points ahead of Laureus AMG Mercedes (Di Resta/Schumacher) with 56 points. Audi Sport is third on 42 points which means that the title can be won only by a Mercedes-Benz team, as a team cannot win more than 54 points in the three races still to come.

Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) who had started 10th ended up a strong fourth despite a penalty. Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) came home seventh. Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) missed a points finish and ended up ninth ahead Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class). Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) and David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) came home 12th and 14th respectively.

Finish (lap 50): Paul Di Resta won ahead of Bruno Spengler; Gary Paffett came home fourth.

Paul Di Resta (AMG Mercedes C-Class) winner: “My second win within two weeks – fantastic. Thank you to my team – you gave me a perfect C-Class which I realised already in this morning’s warm-up. When I lost time during my first pit stop I felt my heart beat, but I managed to move up to the front again. Me first and Bruno second – if we continue like this, the championship battle will be really exciting. I am very confident.”

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) second: “Second place and eight points are a good result. I thank my team for a great job. During the last stint I was faster than Timo and I put a lot of pressure on him; the fight was over when he suffered from a puncture. As I had lost time behind him, Paul was able to move in front of me. I am now looking forward to the next race in Hockenheim.”

Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class) fouth: “I was much faster than Martin Tomczyk and I cannot understand what should have been wrong with my first overtaking manoeuvre. We tangled briefly, but this is normal in a race. At least I showed that overtaking is possible in Oschersleben.”

Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class) seventh: “This circuit does not suit our car so much; therefore, seventh place and two points are not too bad. I hope for more in Hockenheim.”

Ralf Schumacher (Laureus AMG Mercedes C-Class) ninth: “To end up ninth from 15th on the grid is quite ok. Unfortunately, I missed a points finish, but this I ruined already in yesterday’s qualifying.”

Susie Stoddart (TV-Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) 10th: “My start was not so good but I was faster towards the end, so I am quite happy with my 10th-place finish.”

Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) 12th: “After spinning on the opening lap I was able to catch up, but the drive-through penalty because of pit lane speeding ruined my race.”

David Coulthard (Deutsche Post AMG Mercedes C-Class) 14th: “Another nice Sunday excursion. I tangled right after the start and afterwards, I struggled with my car’s balance. But I made more valuable experience.”

CongFu Cheng (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) retired due to an accident: “I was hit by another car, hit the tyre barrier and that was it.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “We almost tripped ourselves up today, when Paul’s first pit stop lasted twice as long as planned and Bruno dropped behind Timo Scheider due to a not ideal stop – the big advantage both had after 20 laps was suddenly gone. But Paul and Bruno fought back and achieved the 1-2 victory. Without his tyre problem, Timo Scheider would have had something to say about first place. I’m sorry for him; when you want 10 points and end up with zero, it hurts. Gary Paffett showed a great drive – without his penalty, which I don’t understand at all, third place instead of fourth would have been possible: strong, considering Gary started 10th on the grid.

“There will be no internal critics today after our not ideal stops: The guys – and the girls – all work so hard and do most of their jobs always right. We now look forward to Hockenheim and the DTM’s German finale. It would be very nice if we could manage a good star performance like today in our home race attended by thousands of Mercedes-Benz colleagues.”
