Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 Meets Safety Standards for 2011 VLN Season

Compliance with the stringent safety standards of Mercedes-Benz was a central consideration for the SLS AMG GT3

The SLS AMG GT3 will shortly be embarking on its first racing season, when Saturday, 2 April 2011 sees the start of the new VLN season (Nürburgring Endurance Championships). Six customer teams will be competing on the North Loop with the racing version of the gull-wing model. The SLS AMG GT3 is perfectly prepared for use on the racetrack, as its safety concept transfers the exemplary safety level of Mercedes-Benz on‑road models to the racetrack. Extensive, sophisticated crash tests and trials have confirmed these high standards.

Compliance with the stringent safety standards of Mercedes-Benz was a central consideration for the SLS AMG GT3. The development focus was on the greatest possible protection for the driver in the event of an accident. Accordingly its construction creates outstandingly favourable conditions in this respect – both in terms of the structural safety of the aluminium spaceframe, direct protection of the driver against impact loads and fire protection.

One prominent feature in the interior of the SLS AMG GT3 is the bucket seat, which is positioned within a safety cell of high-strength CFRP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) as in the DTM cars from Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to its special shape the safety cell, which is bolted to the rollover cage and the aluminium spaceframe, provides considerably higher protection for the driver’s shoulders, hips and legs. It is also compatible with the HANS system (Head and Neck Support). The HANS system helps to prevent serious head, neck and spinal injuries, and is mandatory in many race series. The bucket seat is individually foam-contoured for each driver, features a six-point seat belt with reinforced anchorages and provides occupant protection to the highest level.

Additional protection is ensured by the rollover cage of high-strength steel, which is bolted to the aluminium spaceframe and gives this further rigidity. The 120-litre CFRP safety fuel tank is located directly over the rear axle for optimal crash protection, and features an elastic inner fuel bladder.

Crash verification tests at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center

The exemplary safety standard of the SLS AMG GT3 was verified with the help of numerous crash tests at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center in Sindelfingen – where the passive safety features of all series-production AMG and Mercedes-Benz models are also developed and tested. Such extensive and sophisticated crash tests were previously unprecedented in the GT3 segment.

The safety specialists carried out three crash tests and a static test with the racing version of the gull-wing model: a front, side and rear impact plus a roof deformation test. All the test configurations were specifically chosen to reflect typical racetrack accident situations as closely as possible.

The frontal impact simulated a collision with a wall, such as might occur in the pit lane or – as may typically happen on urban circuits – with the side barrier marking the course. The vehicle impacted the rigid test barrier at an angle of 30 degrees. During this oblique impact only the left side member of the aluminium spaceframe collided, which placed greater stresses on the bodyshell structure. The impact speed was 50 km/h.

In the side impact test the SLS AMG GT3 was rammed by an identical car of the same model at an angle of 90 degrees, and exactly at door height. The impact speed was 50 km/h.

In the rear collision test the gull-wing was likewise struck by a rigid barrier at 50 km/h, with 100% overlap.

The static roof deformation test simulated the loads that may occur during a rollover. In this cased a ram impacted the so-called A-pillar node with a precisely defined force. The rollover cage beneath the roof skin is of high-strength steel, and after the test it practically returned to its original shape.

The results underline the exemplary safety standard of the SLS AMG GT3: during every crash and impact test the driver’s survival space was maintained, which confirms the rigidity of the vehicle structure. Moreover, the measured loads acting on the GT3 driver were all below the biomechanical limits considered to be critical.

Automatic release of the roof hinges

Like every series-production SLS AMG, the GT3 version is equipped with four pyrotechnical elements on the hinges of the gull-wing doors. These allow a rapid exit for the driver, or fast access by emergency personnel, should the vehicle be lying on its roof after an accident. They are activated by the driver, using a switch on the centre console. Should he be incapable of doing this himself, the emergency personnel are able to pull on a ring easily located on the lower edge of the windscreen and marked “Emergency Exit”. The four pyrotechnical elements are then triggered, and release two roof hinges retaining each of the two gull-wing doors. When the interior door catch or external door handle is operated, the driver is able to exit or receive emergency care.

In addition the SLS AMG GT3 has polycarbonate side windows which can be easily removed by the driver or emergency personnel after an accident. The crash-protected location of the battery next to the centre tunnel, as well as the interior and exterior switches cutting off the power circuit, further demonstrate the efforts made for the greatest possible protection of the SLS AMG GT3’s driver.

Fire-extinguishing tests in the engine compartment and interior

The driver of the SLS AMG GT3 is also well protected in the event of a fire, with flame-retardant material and an effective fire extinguisher system preventing or putting out fires in the engine compartment and interior. Using a switch on the centre console and a ring attached to the windscreen, the system can be activated by the driver or by emergency personnel. To ensure the greatest possible effectiveness of the fire extinguisher system, sophisticated and realistic tests were carried out by the research department for fire protection equipment at the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe.

All the tests conducted by the Mercedes Benz safety specialists are more stringent by far than those prescribed for racing cars by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile). As a result, the SLS AMG GT3 achieves an exemplary level of safety that is at present probably unmatched by any other GT3 car.

Eight SLS AMG GT3s competing in the first VLN race on 2 April 2011

The eight SLS AMG GT3s taking part in the first race of the VLN season have been entered exclusively by private teams. At the 58th ADAC Westphalia race on Saturday, 2 April 2011, Black Falcon will take part with three cars while Mamerow Racing, Heico Motorsport, Horn Motorsport, ROWE RACING and Race & Events GmbH will be at the starting line with one gull-wing each. Training begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 12:00 noon. During the development and test programme the SLS AMG GT3 already demonstrated its potential: with one victory and one third place in the VLN races held in autumn 2010, the Black Falcon and Mamerow Racing teams were immediately able to establish themselves among the top GT3 contenders.

The ten races of the new season will be held exclusively on the North Loop of the Nürburgring and the short link to the Grand Prix circuit. 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Spy Photos Emerge

The new V-8 engine produces more power and torque than AMG's current 6.2-liter NA mill, output peaks at 544 hp

Back in 2009, we heard that Mercedes-Benz and AMG had plans to replace its entire engine lineup with a new range of more fuel efficient direct-injected and turbocharged powerplants. A few months later we had official details on one of the most anticipated of the newcomers, a 5.5-liter V-8 that is to replace the 6.2-liter unit found in the current AMG lineup.

It was codenamed M157 and had plans to offer serious power. The new 5.5-liter engine is set to feature direct-injection and twin-turbocharging technologies, this to ensure it produces more power and torque than the current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill. Peak output stands at 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, however, an available Performance Pack sees output increased to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque thanks to additional boost pressure from the turbos.

After news of the engines, spy photos began coming in. And this weekend, the next generation ML AMG SUV was spied again by Motor Authority. Though still heavily covered, we are able to now see the fabricated air intake pipes on the front bumper and air vents on the hood. Thanks to the latest photos, we also get a good look at the large disc brakes at the front and the new AMG wheels, also expected on the next-generation GL AMG SUV. A new bumper and quad exhaust exhaust can be found at the rear.

Almost certain to pick up the performance division’s new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8, the speedy SUV will be called the ML63 AMG and will likely be launched soon after the standard version later this year. The new V-8 engine produces more power and torque than AMG’s current 6.2-liter naturally aspirated mill, with output peaking at 544 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. However, a likely available Performance Pack should see output increased to 571 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque thanks to additional boost pressure from the turbos.

Signs that this is most certainly the AMG variant are the oversized cross-drilled brakes and dual exhaust tailpipes. We can expect a slightly lowered ride height as well as a sports tuned suspension.

Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 Prepared for 2011 Racing Season

The SLS AMG GT3 Gullwing is prepared for the new season in Le Castellet, it will enter 14 race series around the world

Following the successful conclusion of the development and test program, deliveries of the SLS AMG GT3 to customer teams are moving forward as planned. A total of 31 orders have been received for the 2011 racing season, and all the vehicles will be in the hands of the customers by early July. During configuration runs on the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet (France), the teams and racing drivers were able to familiarise themselves with the racing version of the gull-wing model and commence their setup work for the 2011 motor sport season. Bernd Schneider, five-time DTM Champion for Mercedes-Benz, and Thomas Jäger, also a Mercedes-Benz DTM driver from 2000 to 2003, were on hand together with the AMG Customer Sports Team to provide knowledgeable support.

“This year the SLS AMG GT3 will appear in numerous national and international race series. No other brand has won as many DTM races and DTM titles as AMG-Mercedes.

The SLS AMG GT3 is built by HWA AG, while its AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is produced in the AMG custom shop. Both the car and engine are assembled completely by hand.

Bruno Spengler and Mercedes-Benz Together Again for 2011 DTM Season

The 2011 DTM season marks the ninth DTM season that Bruno Spengler will line up behind the wheel of a Mercedes AMG C-Class

The start of the 2011 DTM season will mark the ninth DTM season that Bruno Spengler will line up on the track behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz AMG C-Class and his seventh season as a Mercedes DTM racer.

Mercedes-Benz and Bruno Spengler first worked together eight years ago when he was recruited into the Mercedes-Benz Young Driver Program for the 2003 Formula 3 Euroseries. A serious testing accident left him sidelined for the first six rounds of the year but, in just his second race back, Spengler took his Dallara Mercedes to a third-place podium finish at Le Mans. His combination of talent and fighting spirit set the mould for what was to follow, as he grew with Mercedes to become one of the stars of the DTM.

Following his series debut in 2005, Spengler graduated to the HWA works Mercedes-Benz team for 2006. His first win came that year at the Norisring, when he became one of the youngest winners in the championship’s history at just 22 years and 334 days old. Three more victories followed that year, on the way to a runner-up spot in the championship. He mounted another strong title challenge in 2007, taking one race win and again claiming second place in the championship. Further top-five finishes in the standings followed in 2008 and 2009.

Last season, a hard-fought title battle went right down to the wire, and Spengler was firmly in the hunt until the final race in Shanghai. The crown was ultimately claimed by his Mercedes-Benz team-mate Paul Di Resta, a fellow graduate of the Young Driver Programme, with Spengler finishing third overall. For 2011, Bruno will be aiming to add to his career total of seven DTM wins and mount another strong championship challenge.

Bruno Spengler: “I am delighted to be starting my seventh DTM season with Mercedes-Benz. During the winter, I spent nearly a month in Canada recharging my batteries and preparing for the new season. There’s never a guarantee of success in motorsport, especially in such a closely fought series as DTM, but I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got this year and, together with my team, we’ll be pushing all the way.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “At 27 years old, Bruno Spengler is still a young driver – but he’s already a ‘veteran’ with Mercedes-Benz Motorsport in the very best sense of the word. Bruno gets better every year, and 2011 will mark our ninth year working together. We began back in 2003, when Bruno joined our Formula 3 Junior Programme but immediately suffered an extremely serious testing accident that could, at worst, have meant the end of his career. However, Bruno kept faith in us, and we in him, and that made the joy and satisfaction of his successes after his recovery all the sweeter. Today, he is one of the highest-profile and most successful DTM competitors, but also one of the nicest drivers in the field – and a favourite with the fans. There is still much that Mercedes-Benz Motorsport and Bruno want to achieve together, in order to celebrate a relationship that has now lasted nearly ten years.”

Mercedes SLS AMG and New C63 AMG Estate Ready for F1 World Championship

Mercedes-AMG is providing the SLS AMG as Official F1 Safety Car and the C63 AMG Estate as Official F1 Medical Car

Ready for the starting event of the Formula 1 World Championship in Melbourne, Australia (March 25-27, 2011), Mercedes-AMG is once again providing the Official F1 Safety Car and the Official F1 Medical Car. The task of the SLS AMG and the new C 63 AMG Estate is to ensure maximum safety in dangerous racing situations or following an accident. The SLS AMG has been used in Formula 1 since 2010. The C 63 AMG Estate is now entering its fourth season, but in 2011 it will appear in a new design with updated technology that includes the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission. AMG has been continuously active in Formula 1 for 15 years.

The SLS AMG Official F1 Safety Car is sent onto the track by Race Control whenever an accident or poor weather conditions endanger the safe progress of the race. The gull-wing is driven by German racing driver Bernd Mayländer (39), who has performed this function for the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) since 2000. Mayländer is not only on station for Formula 1 weekends, but also for most of the accompanying series such as the GP2 Series or Porsche Supercup.

During a race the SLS AMG Official F1 Safety Car is on standby in the pit lane. Its deployment is decided by Race Control. On receiving a radio message, Bernd Mayländer and his co-driver, FIA man Pete Tibbetts (45, from Great Britain), take to the track at the head of the field in order to guide the Formula 1 racing cars safely around the circuit.

Unique vehicle concept for maximum driving dynamics

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has the best possible credentials for this demanding role in the top flight of motor racing: the engine, power transmission, suspension and braking system of the Official F1 Safety Car are the same as in the standard production SLS AMG. The exceptional technology package for the super sports car ensures perfect driving dynamics and means that no further technical modifications or lightweight design measures are necessary, with the sole exception of the all-new rear silencer, which allows the high-revving AMG V8 naturally aspirated engine to breathe more easily and offers Formula 1 fans an even more emotionally charged sound experience.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine has a peak output of 420 kW (571 hp) at 6800 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4750 rpm, enabling the gull-wing model to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Fast lap times are a matter of course for the Official F1 Safety Car, otherwise the Formula 1 cars’ tires and brakes would cool down too quickly, while their engines could overheat.

The unique vehicle concept is a key factor in ensuring outstanding driving dynamics: the aluminium spaceframe body keeps the vehicle weight down to 1620 kilograms (DIN kerb weight). And thanks to the dry-sump lubrication system, the AMG V8 powerplant can be installed very low down, resulting in a beneficial lowering of the vehicle’s centre of gravity. The installed position well behind the front axle, and the transaxle arrangement of the new seven-speed double-clutch transmission on the rear axle, have a positive effect on the weight distribution, which is 47/53 percent (front/rear). Pure motorsport technology is used for the AMG sports suspension: aluminium double-wishbone axles at front and rear ensure outstanding driving dynamics with precise turn-in ability, first-class agility, low mass inertia during fast changes in direction, and therefore high cornering limits.

Double-clutch transmission and ceramic composite brake system

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual-clutch technology features four modes and allows fast gear changes with practically no interruption in tractive power – in manual mode (“M”), gear changes can be effected in 100 milliseconds. Together with the 3-stage ESP®, the integrated mechanical multi-disc differential lock ensures outstanding traction. Meanwhile, braking distances are minimised and resistance to fading is maximised, even when the brakes are subject to typical race-track loads, courtesy of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system with its generously sized ceramic discs measuring 402 x 39 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear. The weight-optimised 10-spoke forged wheels are shod with 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear) tires.

Aerodynamically optimised roof light bar incorporating LED technology

Compared to the standard-production SLS, the Official F1 Safety Car is distinguishable on the outside by its prominent F1 logos, carbon-fibre exterior mirrors and the characteristic roof light bar with integrated TV camera. It sits on an all-new carbon-fibre hood whose shape has been tested in the wind tunnel to ensure optimum airflow at the rear aerofoil. The aerofoil pops up when the car reaches 120 km/h, and together with the rear diffuser it provides the necessary rear downforce. LEDs are used for all light functions in the aerodynamically styled roof light bar. Their advantages over the previously used bulbs lie in their extremely fast response time and low power consumption.

The two centrally positioned green lights in the light bar are lit up when the Official F1 Safety Car joins the field, and must first be overtaken by all the Formula 1 racing cars taking part. Once the SLS AMG has assumed the leading position, the outer orange flashing lights are switched on to signal to the Formula 1 drivers that no overtaking whatsoever is allowed. The white stroboscopic lights in the headlamps and tail lights have a general signalling function, and are always flashing while the Safety Car is deployed. A special number plate at the rear, with “Safety Car” lettering and 700 LEDs, provides additional safety in darkness or wet weather. A rear camera is integrated to the left of the number plate, allowing those in the cockpit of the Official F1 Safety Car to keep an eye on the Formula 1 cars behind via a monitor.

Practical interior with AMG sports bucket seats

Opening the striking gull-wing doors reveals a functional cockpit which – like the exterior – is only slightly different from the standard model. AMG sports bucket seats with black leather upholstery and six-point seat belts ensure optimal lateral support. To the right of the AMG DRIVE UNIT there are four coloured keys operating the various lighting functions and the signal horn, which is activated for safety reasons when entering andleaving the pit lane. The centre console is of carbon-fibre, as are other areas of interior trim. The AMG Performance steering wheel in leather/Alcantara has a specially contoured grip area, a high-grade metal insert and a 370 millimetre rim with a flattened lower section. The seven gears of the dual-clutch transmission are shifted using the two metal shift paddles.

Two central monitors in the SLS AMG cockpit are used to monitor the progress of the race. To the left and right of the lower monitor are the controls for the radio system, which allows Bernd Mayländer and Pete Tibbetts to communicate with Race Control as well as with each other. A second interior mirror lets the co-driver keep an eye on the Formula 1 cars behind. Meanwhile, the “Marshalling System” is integrated in the central display on the instrument cluster and in the lid of the glove compartment: here the driver and co-driver can see exactly the same signals as the Formula 1 drivers in their cockpits. For instance, the various LEDs indicate when yellow or green flags are being waved. LEDs indicating the status of the roof light bar, along with an on-board camera angled towards Bernd Mayländer, are mounted at the front end of the dashboard.

New C 63 AMG Estate as the Official F1 Medical Car

As in 2008 to 2010, the C 63 AMG Estate is the Official F1 Medical Car responsible for ensuring a rapid emergency response in the event of an accident. The super-fast estate car follows the Formula 1 field during the starting lap, because the race cars are still bunched extremely closely during this critical phase of the race.

The current version of the C 63 AMG Estate will be used for the new season, with state-of-the-art design and engineering. Major new visual features include the aluminium bonnet with modified powerdomes, the radiator grille, the headlamps and the AMG rear apron. To ensure the best possible airflow to the radiator/coolers, the AMG front apron has larger intake apertures and side air vents.

Peak output of 358 kW (487 hp) thanks to the AMG Performance Package

From now on, power is transmitted by the innovative AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with a wet start-up clutch, four driving modes, a double-declutch and a RACE START function. Dynamic performance is guaranteed by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, which now delivers 358 kW (487 hp) at 6800 rpm in the Official F1 Medical Car. The increase in output versus the standard 336 kW (457 hp) engine is due to the AMG Performance Package, which is optionally available for any C 63 AMG and makes an acceleration of 4.4 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (Estate 4.5 sec.) possible. For the AMG Performance Package the engine specialists have placed their trust in a technology transfer from the SLS AMG: the forged pistons, connecting rods and lightweight crankshaft have been adopted from the gull-wing model. The lower inertia of the three-kilogram lighter components allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev freely and respond even more promptly. Distinguishing features of the Performance Package include the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey and the AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated composite brake discs at the front axle.

Outstanding driving dynamics are also ensured by the adjustable coil-over suspension, the AMG light-alloy wheels shod with size 235/35 R 19 (front) and 255/30 R 19 (rear) tires, the differential lock and 3-stage ESP®. Maximum durability is provided by the optimised coolant, engine oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid cooling. Invisibly but unmistakably, the characteristic AMG V8 sound issues from the special rear silencers of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Like the Official F1 Safety Car, the Official F1 Medical Car is distinguishable by its F1‑ logos, the roof light bar, and the stroboscopic flashing LED lights at the front and rear. A number plate illuminated with LEDs and displaying the words “Medical Car” on the tailgate makes the car easier to see in darkness or adverse weather conditions.

Plenty of space in the boot for emergency equipment

The Official F1 Medical Car is piloted by racing driver Alan van de Merwe (31, from South Africa); his co-driver is the official FIA Grand Prix Chief Medical Officer Dr Gary Hartstein (56, from Belgium). Two assisting medical experts from a specially-selected clinic near the race track sit in the rear. Four AMG sports bucket seats with six-point seat belts, two monitors integrated into the centre console for monitoring the race and a radio set for communicating with Race Control distinguish the interior of the Official F1 Medical Car from that of the standard-production C 63 AMG Estate. There is plenty of space for all the emergency equipment – including a defibrillator and respiration apparatus – in the 485-litre luggage area of the C 63 AMG Estate.

AMG Performance Studio responsible for development

The development, track-testing and configuration of the two Official F1 Safety Cars and the two Official F1 Medical Cars – in both cases, there is one emergency vehicle and one replacement vehicle – are carried out by the specialists from the AMG Performance Studio in close collaboration with the test team for AMG overall vehicle development. This involves drawing on over 40 years of know-how from the field of motorsport, as well as the wealth of experience in the design of high-performance sports cars. Numerous test drives were carried out on various racetracks in order to tune the suspension and verify all the systems and components. Two highly-qualified AMG technicians are also on hand to take responsibility for the deployment of the Safety Car and Medical Car at all Formula 1 races in the current season.

AMG has provided the Safety Cars and Medical Cars for 15 years

AMG has extensive experience in the design, development and deployment of the Official F1 Safety Car and Official F1 Medical Car. The Affalterbach-based company has been active in the top echelon of international motorsport since 1996.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Spied Testing

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Saloon will offer up right around 510 horsepower

For those of you out there that need more than the current C63 AMG’s 451 horsepower engine, Mercedes is working on a C63 AMG Black Series that will most certainly fulfill your needs. The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series will offer up right around 510 horsepower, which for those of you counting is 29 more than the current C63 AMG equipped with P31 Development Package. With these figures, we expect the 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 as the choice engine.

Some reports have come in that there could be a possibility of a 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 offering 571 bhp. While we are leaning towards the 6.2 NA option, we will certainly keep you posted if we find out anything concrete.

The C63 AMG Black Series that was spotted testing in Sweden was sporting wider fenders and a new front spoiler, as well as an updated rear diffuser taking inspiration from Formula One. While still in development, the C63 AMG Black Sereies test car is using the prior front fascia not found on the new 2012 car, however w will likely see the updated headlamps and LED running lights as part of the new package.

The saloon version of the new Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series will be launched first, followed by a coupe soon after.

Thanks to Andrus and Gmotors for the tip.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Official Debut

Driver's can expect a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds while being electronically limited to 155 mph in stock trim in the C63 AMG Coupe

Ahead of its debut at next months New York Auto Show, the Mercedes C63 AMG has been officially unveiled.  Essentially what you are looking at is Affalterbach’s 6.2-liter V8 engine with 451 horsepower (481 with the optional AMG Development pack) to the rear wheels via a seven-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox. Driver’s can expect a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds while being electronically limited to 155 mph in stock trim, or 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and 174 mph top speed with the AMG Development spec.

The all new 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe designed by Mercedes AMG combines distinctive design with an extremely powerful drivetrain and superior handling. The new coupe joins the already successful C63 AMG Sedan as well as the AMG family of coupes which includes the CLS63 AMG and the CL63 AMG.

Buyers in the U.S. can expect the AMG coupe in showrooms this September.

The AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine in the C63 AMG Coupe delivers a maximum output of 451 hp and peak torque of 443 lb-ft. Reflecting its outstanding performance, the coupe is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). With these specifications, the new two-door vehicle is poised to take the lead in its segment.

The new coupe shares all the technology updates from the 2012 C63 AMG Sedan and features the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with standard “Controlled Efficiency” mode, and a new power steering pump that helps to reduce fuel consumption.

AMG Development Package for a maximum output of 481 hp

This reduction in fuel consumption also applies to the C63 Coupe when equipped with the AMG Development Package which generates 481 hp. This optional package improves acceleration from 0 to 60 mph to 4.3 seconds thanks to technology transferred from the SLS AMG. The forged pistons, connectin grods and lightweight crankshaft adopted from the gullwing model’s high-tech drive system save 6.6 pounds in weight. This reduces rotational inertia and enhances the agility and responsiveness of the high-revving, eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Top speed increases as well to 174 mph (electronically limited). Visually, the AMG performance package can be identified by the variable intake manifold finished in titanium grey under the hood, the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece front rotors and red painted brake calipers, the carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler and the AMG performance steering wheel in premium leather with an Alcantara® grip area.

Standard AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission provides direct and agile power delivery. In place of the traditional torque converter, this innovative transmission features a compact, wet start-up clutch which reduces the power losses normally associated with conventional automatic transmissions and significantly lowers fuel consumption. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode provides early, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed and “soft” accelerator characteristics to help improve fuel economy.

The exclusive Mercedes-AMG power transmission offers a high level of versatility and performance. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility and are selected via the new rotary control knob familiar from the SLS AMG. Faster gear changes and higher revs add to the emotional experience as well as rev-matching in “S”, “S+” and “M” modes. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 100 milliseconds and the RACE START function allows the driver to harness the vehicle’s full acceleration capability.

Specific AMG sports suspension for quick acceleration and ride comfort

It’s not just the engine and MCT transmission which influence the C63 AMG Coupe’s aggressive character – the AMG sports suspension and AMG high-performance braking system are also key here. Compared with the standard suspension, the AMG coupe has a separate three-link front suspension, a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension and a wider track front and rear. The stiffer elastokinematics, autonomous axle kinematics with more negative camber and larger anti-roll bars result in greater agility and lateral acceleration. Specially adjusted spring and damper rates have optimized both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as road noise and tire vibration.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5: 1) provides excellent road feel and contributes to the nimble driving experience. The precise steering is complemented by three-stage ESP¨, the Electronic Stability Program that enables three individual control strategies to be accessed at the touch of a button. The driver can use the ESP¨ switch on the center console to choose between ESP ON, ESP SPORT and ESP OFF modes. The AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs at the corners provide maximum responsiveness, short stopping distances and high fade resistance.

Confident and athletic: the design of the C63 AMG Coupe

Visually, the coupe version of the C63 AMG has a confident, athletic presence that is reminiscent of the high-performance SL63 AMG roadster. The C63 AMG Coupe has a sinister low profile, powerful shoulderline and a narrow C-pillar, combined with short overhangs, long hood, steeply raked windshield and long, sloping roof.

As is typical for AMG, the car has a striking, arrow-shaped front section with the new AMG front apron housing a high-gloss black horizontal edge, AMG-specific LED daytime running lights and side air outlets. The large Mercedes star sits on a wing-shaped transverse lamella in the new radiator grille, while a modified aluminum hood with powerdomes, emphasizes the strong character of the car. The new clear-lens headlamps are particularly eye-catching, especially when equipped with the optional Lighting Package which includes bi-xenon headlamps.

The wide front fender bearing the “6.3 AMG” script, AMG rocker panels and the new 18-inch 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-gloss finish dominate the side view. Excellent contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear) tires.

At the rear, the unique AMG rear apron has a distinctive, black diffuser insert and three pronounced diffuser fins along with two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

High-quality, dramatic interior

Inside, the instrument cluster with integrated screen immediately recalls the new CLS63 AMG with three separate round gauges providing information on speed, engine rpm, fuel level, and coolant temperature. Other display options are available through the AMG main menu accessible via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The three-dimensional TFT color display located inside the speedometer welcomes the driver by showing an AMG logo.

The specially shaped AMG performance steering wheel has been adopted from the CLS63 AMG and includes flattened top and bottom sections, metallic trim elements, grip areas trimmed in perforated leather, and aluminum shift paddles. The instrument cluster and center console are trimmed in high-gloss black piano lacquer while the dashboard and doors feature aluminum trim; optional carbon fiber or wood trims are also available. The rotary control for selecting the C, S, S+, M transmission modes and RACE START is situated on the center console.

The new AMG sports seats with integrated head restraints, EASY-ENTRY system and AMG badges have a sporty design with horizontal stitching. Combined M-B Tex/DINAMICA black upholstery comes as standard. DINAMICA is a new type of breathable man-made fiber which is pleasing to the touch and is characterized by low emissions and high durability. The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in M-B Tex while the center panels of the seat cushions are upholstered with DINAMICA. The C63 AMG Coupe is a proper four-seater with the rear seats featuring the same style of horizontal stitching as the AMG sports seats. Standard split-folding rear seats help expand available cargo capacity.

Optional leather interior appointments help individualize the inside with four single tone and three two-tone combinations.

High level of safety and new assistance systems

With nine airbags as standard, belt tensioners and belt-force limiters for all seats, the C63 AMG Coupe has extensive safety features. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front, side and pelvic bags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver’s side, and windowbags.

With a number of driving assistance systems ranging from ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection to Blind Spot Assist, the C63 AMG Coupe provides a comprehensive level of driver support and protection. The assistance systems are familiar from the flagship S-Class and are based on the latest radar, camera and sensor technology to help monitor and prevent frequent accident causes such as driving too closely, fatigue and darkness.

The new telematics generation featuring enhanced ease of operation

The C63 AMG Coupe also features a new telematics generation which offers greater operating convenience, larger displays, phone book transfer, Bluetooth audio streaming and a USB interface now accommodated in the center armrest.

The optional COMAND system now features SIRIUS weather information along with the familiar destination search/route download via Google. The COMAND navigation system also includes a new 3D display with city views, the ability to record and retrace a specific route, specific personal destinations can be saved or imported via an SD card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them an economical variation.

The new C63 AMG Coupe will make its U.S. showroom debut in September 2011.

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Look-Alike by INDEN Design

Inden Design unveiled their latest package that aims to make the Mercedes-Benz S500 look more like the S65 AMG

Inden Design, a German based tuning firm, unveiled their latest package that aims to make the Mercedes-Benz S500 (W221) look more like the S65 AMG.

Daytime running lights are added to the tuned S-Class in addition to the retouch taillights and side mirrors. Also on the exterior, a new front spoiler, rear diffuser with integrated quad exhaust pipes and updated side sills. To finished it off, the Mercedes S500 receives an updated paint job with a charcoal gray matte film.

In terms of engine tuning, there is a power upgrade to 420 PS (309 kW / 414 bhp) up from the S-Class’ 388 PS (285 kW / 383 bhp) on the 5.5 liter V8 Engine. This is in part thanks to the new stainless-steel exhaust system with AMG pipes.

Brakes are also upgraded to the same found on the S600 V12 BiTurbo with 6-piston calipers for the front wheels and 4-piston brake calipers on the rear axle.

50 mm suspension lowering can also be seen on the new INDEN Design S-Class and really helps to highlight the new 20-inch wheels with 265/30-20 tires at the front and 275/30-20 tires for the rear rims.

For the interior, INDEN Design added a two-tone leather and Alcantara finish for the headliner, door panels and all three pillars along with carbon inserts replacing the former wood trims. Also, a new speedometer now reads up to 360 km/h.

Mercedes AMG Driving Academy To Use SLS AMG GT3

The AMG Driving Academy, lead by Chief Instructor Reinhold Renger, includes some prominent names such as Susie Stoddart

As you may remember, last summer, one of our writer’s had the pleasure of attending the PRO Mercedes AMG Driving Academy.  While you only had the one article to read about the event, we heard about his experience for at least the next 6 months – making us all completely jealous and waiting for the next season of courses to attend ourselves.  Mercedes just announced that they will now be using the SLS AMG GT3 for the MASTERS Academy, making us even more eager to sign up.

Keep in mind you have to work your way up to the MASTERS program, but if your experience is anything like our TPhilips, getting there is half the fun.  Read below for even more information on the upcoming AMG Driving Academy.

With these unique events, the AMG Driving Academy – which was started successfully in 2007 – is offering participants an opportunity to experience motor racing first hand whilst benefitting from what is an unprecedented high standard of safety. The new SLS AMG GT3 MASTERS is a preliminary highlight of the AMG Driving Academy, which is continually extending is programme to provide an extremely wide variety of events.

The module-based SLS AMG GT3 MASTERS programme consists of four stages: EXPERIENCE, WARM-UP, TRAINING and COMPETITION. During the three-hour EXPERIENCE stage, participants start off with the road version of the SLS AMG to benefit from some driving guidance. After an introduction and a seated “rehearsal”, they take to the wheel of the SLS AMG GT3 for themselves, and are again guided safely around the race track by a lead vehicle. Afterwards the participants step into the passenger seat of an SLS AMG GT3 racing taxi driven by an experienced professional racing driver to enjoy a few quick laps around the circuit, all of which is captured on video.

During the second stage – WARM-UP – the participants are given a detailed theory-based introduction to the technology and controls of the SLS AMG GT3. After a fitness check, during the subsequent training session the participants are able to familiarise themselves fully with the racing version of the gullwing: the programme covers such aspects as acceleration, braking, changing gear, overtaking and also a variety of other handling exercises, all carried out on sports tyres. Plus, participants who are resident in Germany also have the chance to acquire a national DMSB (German Motor Sport Federation) driver’s license.

COMPETITION forms the highlight of the SLS AMG GT3 MASTERS

In stage three – TRAINING – the SLS AMG GT3 vehicles are initially driven on sports tyres, after which they are switched over to slick tyres without profile. The participants train with an experienced personal trainer, who they can book on an hourly basis. The focus lies squarely on the systematic enhancement of personal skills as well as cornering techniques, perfect braking, acceleration and changing gear. Professional data and video recordings are also used for consistent improvement of race track driving technique. The highlight of the SLS AMG GT3 MASTERS is the COMPETITION stage, which is expected to start at the end of 2012: after a training session which is specific to the race circuit being used, the participants will complete initial assessment tests, followed by individual and team competitions.

Participants can take part in all MASTERS events using either the SLS AMG GT3 vehicles which are made available or driving their own vehicles. All drivers also benefit from sports medicine input. And while there are no particular requirements for taking part in the EXPERIENCE stage, when it comes to the WARM-UP, TRAINING and COMPETITION stages, participants have to complete appropriate race track training sessions. Prices for SLS AMG GT3 MASTERS events start at 1500 euros.

Exemplary level of safety thanks to a carbon-fibre safety cell

The racing version of the gull-wing was conceived as a customer sports car for sprints and long-distance racing according to the near-series FIA GT3 rulebook. In a set-up similar to that of the Mercedes-Benz DTM cars, the seat shell of the SLS AMG GT3 is located in a high-strength carbon-fibre (CFRP) safety cell. Thanks to its special shape, the safety cell, which is bolted to the rollover cage and the aluminium spaceframe, offers far greater protection for the driver’s shoulders, hips and legs. The seat shell also features the HANS (Head and Neck Support) system, is individually foam-padded and equipped with a six-point seat belt, thus maximising occupant safety. Additional safety is provided by the steel rollover cage, which also gives further reinforcement to the aluminium spaceframe.

Following homologation and specification of the balance of performance by the FIA worldwide governing body for automobile organisations, delivery of the SLS AMG GT3 will commence in March 2011. The sales price will be 334,000 euros (net) / 397,460 euros (incl. 19 % VAT). Production of the customer vehicles began in December 2010.

Tailor-made programme to meet all requirements

The AMG Driving Academy programme offers a wide selection of events which allow ambitious sports car enthusiasts to improve their car control and further enhance their driving safety. Founded by Mercedes-AMG in 2007, the AMG Driving Academy comprises five different programmes: EMOTION, BASIC, ADVANCED, PRO and MASTERS. These offer everything from lifestyle-oriented events and courses which take the participants through their first experience of driving at the limit, all the way through to intensive race circuit training with a competitive edge. The level of difficulty is tailored to the participants’ individual requirements. Prices for the AMG Driving Academy programmes start from as little as 370 euros.

New lifestyle events in 2011 will include the EMOTION Tour Wine & Dine, EMOTION Tour Golf, EMOTION Tour Montreux and EMOTION Tour DTM Show Event Munich, all of which will focus on enjoyment and community spirit.

The AMG Driving Academy adopts a strategy of expansion

The AMG Driving Academy training courses not only take place on the legendary racing circuits of Europe, such as the North Loop of the Nürburgring, the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg or the Grand Prix circuit at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. This year, the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (Austria), newly opened in 2011, will also play host to the AMG Driving Academy. Special events for AMG fans from the USA and China will also be held at such racing circuits as the Laguna Seca Raceway (California), Road Atlanta Racetrack (Georgia), Lime Rock Park (Connecticut), the Shanghai International Circuit and the Zhuhai International Circuit. Due to increasing demand, AMG is also preparing tailor-made events for Japan and Canada too.

Enjoy driving pleasure on the frozen lakes of Swedish Lapland

A particularly appealing training event takes place from January to March each year in Arjeplog (Sweden), not far from the Arctic Circle: the AMG Winter Sporting ADVANCED and PRO event. Participants drive the AMG high-performance cars provided exclusively on a closed-off ice surface, and the Electronic Stability Program ESP® is generally disabled. Specially developed training programmes guarantee an optimum combination of training success and driving pleasure. All the cars are fitted with special spike tyres, which ensure a precisely defined level of grip. A wide-ranging support programme for the event characterised by a typical local atmosphere rounds off the four-and five-day events in Swedish Lapland. Also included is a drive or ride in the AMG Ice Taxi, a specially prepared AMG car fitted with the special spike tyres used by FIA WRC rally cars.

Since the beginning of 2009 participants in the AMG Winter Sporting event have been able to enjoy the facilities of the newly-built AMG Lodge which nestles in the breathtaking landscape of Swedish Lapland. The AMG-owned hotel on Mount Galtis near Arjeplog provides a fabulous view over the forests and lakes of the region. The exclusive rooms, excellent restaurant and large spa area including swimming pool and fitness studio help to ensure a pleasant stay.

Prominent instructors experienced in the world of motorsport

Licensed trainers with extensive racing experience pass on their vast knowledge with great professionalism. The AMG Driving Academy’s 23-man team, lead by Chief Instructor Reinhold Renger, includes some prominent names such as Susie Stoddart (28, GB, DTM driver for Mercedes-Benz), Bernd Schneider (46, five-time DTM champion), Bernd Mayländer (39, driver of the Official F1™ Safety Car) and Thomas Jäger (34, coordinator for AMG Customer Sport). A new addition to the team is Chris Mamerow (26). All of the instructors of the AMG Driving Academy have extensive experience in motorsport, significant technical know-how and excellent teaching skills.

AMG high-performance cars double up as cars for hire

Depending on the type of event, the participants drive either their own AMG cars or AMG high-performance models laid on by the AMG Driving Academy – such as the SLS AMG or the new CLS 63 AMG. Alternatively AMG hire cars are also available for a select number of events.

Standard features of all AMG events, meanwhile, are top-class hospitality – including culinary specialities, as well as accommodation in high-class hotels. The AMG Driving Academy also arranges complete incentive packages for companies, customers and business partners. These may take the form of lifestyle-oriented events along the lines of an EMOTION tour or intensive race circuit training. Whichever option you choose, AMG is able to put together exciting, tailor-made programmes.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Is a Finalist for 2011 World Performance Car

The three finalists for 2011 World Performance Car award are: Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo

At a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation and the New York International Auto Show at the Geneva International Motor Show, the top three finalists for the World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards were announced.

The winners will be declared at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday, April 21, 2011.

From an initial entry list of thirty-nine new vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of ten finalists, the top three contenders for the overall 2011 World Car of the Year title are, in alphabetical order: the Audi A8, the BMW 5 Series and the Nissan LEAF.

To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2010 and ending May 30, 2011.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-six top-level automotive journalists from twenty-four countries around the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work. All hold significant stature within their own regions and countries.

The top three finalists for the 2011 World Performance Car award are, in alphabetical order: the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

While the winner of the overall World Car award must excel in a broad range of attributes, the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt sports/performance orientation while satisfying the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car of the Year award.

Entrants may be chosen from that list of eligible vehicles, or they may be newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of five-hundred vehicles.

The World Green Car* award is presented by Bridgestone Corporation (Japan). Ryoji Yamada, General Manager of Brand Management said, “We are very pleased and honored to sponsor the 2011 World Green Car award. The environment is everyone’s responsibility. And throughout our global family of companies, we take this responsibility very seriously. We believe it is our mission to serve society with superior quality… not just with eco-friendly products but also in the way we produce those products and the way in which we support our many communities with environ mentally-friendly activities such as wildlife habitats and our Lake Biwa initiative in Japan”.

Due to the complexity of some of the ‘green’ technologies, three (3) green experts were appointed by the World Car Steering Committee to extensively review all documentation and specs associated with each candidate. They then create a short-list of finalists for review by the sixty-six (66) jurors in their second round of voting in February. The three green experts were in alphabetical order: Sam Abuelsamid (representing North America), Dean Slavnich (representing Europe) and Tadashi Tateuchi (representing Asia).

The sixty-six member jury chose the following top three finalists for the 2011 World Green Car* award: the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition, the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan LEAF.

Cars eligible for the 2011 World Car Design of the Year award are taken from the list of World Car candidates or they may be included as a stand-alone entry provided the vehicle is introduced and available for sale in at least one major market during the period beginning January 1, 2010 and ending May 30th, 2011

A design panel consisting of five highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors. The design experts were: Masatsugu Arimoto (Japan), Silvia Baruffaldi (Italy), Gernot Bracht (Germany), Sam Livingstone (UK) and Tom Matano (USA). Jurors then voted on the experts’ recommendations. The top three design finalists as chosen by the jurors are, in alphabetical order: the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the Aston Martin Rapide and the Ferrari 458 Italia.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Offers Enhanced Technology

The C63 AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its exceptional flexibility

The successful Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is now more attractive than ever: the modified design of the top-of-the-range C-Class model is complemented by numerous enhancements to its technology which deliver even more driving enjoyment while reducing fuel consumption significantly. The introduction of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with the “Controlled Efficiency” mode as standard along with a new power steering pump helps to reduce the combined NEDC fuel consumption by about ten percent to 12.0 l/100 km (Estate: 12.3 l/100 km). The output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is unchanged at 336 kW (457 hp) and can be increased to a maximum of 358 kW (487 hp) with the optional AMG Performance package. Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimise the AMG sports suspension. New assistance systems and a new generation of telematics with internet access increase both safety and comfort.

The latest 2011 generation of the C 63 AMG is now more dynamic and athletic than ever. Thanks to its new radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a wing-type transverse louvre, as well as a new AMG front apron with a lower cross member painted in high-gloss black, special AMG daytime running lights and side air outlets, the front section recalls the look of the SL 63 AMG high-performance roadster. The new bonnet with its modified powerdomes is now made of aluminium. New clear-lens headlamps emphasise the car’s distinctive, self-confident presence, especially when the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) is also specified. The wide front wings with the “6.3 AMG” legend and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels which are painted in titanium grey and have a high-sheen finish dominate the side view. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tyres at front and rear respectively.

The rear view of the C 63 AMG also evokes the SL 63 AMG: the new AMG rear apron has a distinctive, black diffuser insert with three pronounced diffuser fins. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system are as pleasing to the ear as they are to the eye.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL 63 AMG

Under the skin, too, the top C-Class model boasts a wealth of new technology including the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission – another advanced feature adopted from the SL 63 AMG. Rather than using a torque converter, this innovative transmission has a wet start-off clutch which allows it to deliver a much more efficient, agile and direct response. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced significantly thanks to the “Controlled Efficiency” mode and a new power steering pump: at 12.0 litres per 100 km (Estate: 12.3 l/100 km) the combined NEDC fuel consumption of the C 63 AMG is 1.4 litres (Estate: 1.3 litres) lower than that of the predecessor model; this represents a reduction in fuel consumption of some ten percent. The CO2 emissions figure is now 280 (Estate: 288) grams per kilometre. Both power variants have identical fuel consumption and emission figures.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its

exceptional flexibility: with four driving modes as well as double-declutching and RACE START functions it is as compatible with a relaxed, fuel-saving driving style as it is with high-speed laps on a closed racing circuit and extremely dynamicovertaking manoeuvres. The Controlled Efficiency “C” mode is programmed to provide early, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed to help the driver keep fuel consumption down. The “S”, “S+” and “M” modes deliver increased agility through fast, responsive gear changes and higher revs. Gear changes in the “S+” and “M” modes take just 100 milliseconds.

The naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine with its large displacement of 6208 cc develops 336 kW (457 hp) at 6800 rpm and attains a peak torque of 600 newton metres at 5000 rpm. A look at the performance figures confirms that the new C 63 AMG retains its predecessor’s position as the top performing model in its segment: acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes just 4.5 seconds (Estate: 4.6 s) while the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Performance package: technology transfer from the SLS AMG

Even more dynamic performance is available with the optional AMG Performance package: this offers 358 kW (487 hp) and allows a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.4 seconds (Estate: 4.5 s). The Mercedes-AMG engine experts have achieved this increase in output thanks to a technology transfer from the SLS AMG: the forged pistons, connecting rods and the lightweight crankshaft all come from the gullwing model’s engine. The reduced mass inertia of the components – which are three kilograms lighter than those of the standard version – allows the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine to rev up with even greater ease and agility. Models equipped with the performance package can be identified by the variable intake manifold painted in titanium grey under the bonnet, the AMG high-performance braking system with composite front discs and red painted brake calipers all round, the carbon-fibre spoiler lip on the boot lid (Saloon) and the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather with an Alcantara® grip area.

Optimised suspension, new steering system reduces fuel consumption

The AMG sports suspension with a special front axle, reinforced rear axle and wider track all round has undergone thorough modification; the driver benefits from this in two ways as the C 63 AMG now offers greater driving enjoyment and ride comfort at all times. The new, stiffer elastokinematics, the revised axle kinematics with more negative camber all round and the new rear-axle anti-roll bar with a larger cross-section result in higher agility and greater lateral acceleration. But driving dynamics is not the only area in which progress has been made: new spring and damper rates have optimised both the responsiveness of the suspension as well as the road roar and tyre vibration characteristics.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a direct ratio (13.5 : 1) has a newly developed power-steering pump which plays a decisive role in reducing the fuel consumption. This is because the power assistance for the steering only requires energy when the driver is actually making steering movements. Reliable deceleration at all times is ensured by the AMG high-performance braking system with internally ventilated and perforated discs all round.

Interior: high quality and perceived value

Even a quick glance at the interior of the C 63 AMG reveals the considerable progress which has been made: the completely new dashboard design with an integrated screen impresses with its particularly attractive appearance and the superior quality of the details which immediately bring the new CLS 63 AMG to mind. The quality look and feel meet the highest standards. The new, all-colour, three-dimensional TFT display in the middle of the redesigned speedometer welcomes the driver by showing the AMG logo. The new three-spoke AMG performance steering wheel – another feature adopted from the CLS 63 AMG – which is trimmed in nappa leather and features a metallic trim element has flattened top and bottom sections as well as grip areas which are specially shaped and trimmed in perforated leather for perfect steering control. Aluminium shift paddles allow manual gear selection.

Fine trim elements in brushed dark aluminium are to be found on the dashboard and doors. Situated in the centre console, which is enhanced with high-gloss black piano lacquer trim elements, is the new rotary control for selecting the transmission modes C, S, S+, M and RACE START. The special AMG sports seats with integral head restraints and adaptive backrests are available from launch with combined ARTICO/DINAMICA black upholstery. DINAMICA is a new type of breathable man-made fibre which is pleasant to the touch and is characterised by low emissions and a high degree of lightfastness. The side bolsters of the AMG sports seats are covered in ARTICO while the centre panels of the seat cushions are also upholstered with DINAMICA.

Available as an option, designo leather appointments give the interior of the C 63 AMG a particularly exclusive character: four single colours and three two-tone combinations are available. As a further option, these can be complemented with “extended black designo leather appointments” for the top section of the dashboard and the upper section of the door linings.

Other attractive optional appointments are also exclusively available for the C 63 AMG from the AMG Performance Studio:

BRABUS 700 Biturbo Based on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Premieres at Geneva Motor Show

The Brabus 700 Biturbo, based on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, was officially revealed Tuesday at teh 2011 Geneva Motor Show

The Brabus 700 Biturbo, based on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, was officially revealed Tuesday at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

To fit the Mercedes SLS V8 engine, the German tuner’s engineers have created their own twin-turbo system that achieves an output of 700 PS (514 kW / 690 bhp) and 850 Nm (626 lb-ft) of torque. The B63 bi-turbo system features a left-turning charger attached to the left side of the engine, as opposed to the more common right-charging, right-side fitted twin-turbochargers. Improved gas flow and dynamics are the result of this style of fitting.

Brabus created an ultra-light titanium exhaust system in house that features four slanted tailpipes that are 84 mm in diameter. In addition to new tailpipes, Brabus provides an inter-cooling system, performance exhaust manifold, sport air filter system, offers an ECU remap and forged its own fitted pistons that reduce the compression ratio to 9.0:1.

Final performance figures have the tuned SLS hitting 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.2 seconds and offers a respectable top speed of 340 km/h (213 mph).

Brabus adds a wide-body kit (WIDESTAR) that widens the SLS 20 mm at the rear axle and gives a sportier look and feel. A new front spoiler, rear spoiler lip and rear diffuser are added in addition to the blue illuminated gills at the front fender.

To put even more emphasis on the wedge shape of the SLS AMG Gullwing, the Brabus Monoblock F “PLATINUM EDITION” wheels are mounted in 9.5J x 20-inch rims, with 275/30 ZR 20 tires on the front axle, and 11J x 21-inch covered by 295/25 ZR 21 tires on the back. Tires are either Pirelli or Yokohama.

Custom-tailored interiors have been a specialty of Brabus for more than three decades and Brabus livedup to their name on the Mercedes SLS interior. The Brabus upholstery shop crafts individual, exclusive interiors in any desired leather or Alcantara color for the SLS, offering a completely customizable look. There is also a new sport steering wheel, a 400 km/h (250 mph) speedometer, matte or shining carbon-fiber trims as well as matte anodized aluminum pedals and foot rest.

MKB Tuner Pulls Additional Power From the Mercedes SLS AMG

The German tuning company MKB went under the hood of the SLS AMG and managed to raise the power from 571 hp to 638 hp

If you haven’t already surmised from the influx of Mercedes SLS AMG coverage as of late, the new Gullwing seems to be one of the most popular cars at the Geneva Motor Show among tuners this year. One reason undoubtedly is because the SLS AMG offers the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine along with its technical resemblance to modern race cars. The latest to turn their attention to the SLS is German tuning company MKB, who went under the hood of the model and managed to raise the power from 571 hp to 638 hp – a nice boost for the power hungry among you. Along with the increased horsepower is increased torque, growing from 650 Nm to 710 Nm.

In the first tuning stage, MKB only offers a software upgrade, taking advantage of the already fantastic power on tap.  Its performance speaks for itself, with speed times of 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, 0-200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.5 seconds, and a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) with speed limiter.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG offers an already nearly perfect mechanical basis, intake and exhaust system – a huge achievement for a production vehicle. MKB merely tapped into the SLS Gullwing’s potential with its sophisticated MKB software, and in doing so managed to reveal the true power of the SLS. During the conversion, MKB flashes its MKB P 640 software into the ECU of the SLS, and the rest takes care of itself.

“If a car manufacturer offers such a high value engine and high value engine periphery parts in a mass production car than you won’t find additional power if you simply change some of these parts and hope for a performance increase. Because of that fact we did concentrate on the engine tuning with given properties first and we found its real potential. The existing technical basis of AMG is supporting the MKB tuning philosophy and development accuracy,” notes MKB CEO Panagiotis Avramidis.

In addition to the ECU upgrade, MKB also offers the Alpha III wheel set with 9.5×20 and 275/35 ZR 20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires at the front axle and 11.5×20 and 295/35 ZR 20 at the rear axle. The tire and wheel combination give the SLS a perfect driving balance for any high speed track.

Compared to other tuners complete overhall of the SLS AMG, the minor conversion offered by MKB that still offers an additional 67 HP and 60 Nm will likely be welcomed by SLS purists.  The conversion to MKB P 640 is now available from MKB with TÜV, Euro 5 and MKB guarantee.

Thanks to Markus for the tip.

Mansory Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gets Carbon Makeover for Geneva

Tuesday marks the start of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and Swiss Tuner Mansory is offering a Carbon SLS AMG

Tuesday marks the start of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, and it wouldn’t be right to cover the show without highlighting Swiss Tuner extraordinaire Mansory’s work on the SLS AMG.  While at first glance the styling is more reminiscent of a Ferrari 599 than a Merc, we can assure you that the car in the photos is indeed the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The custom carbon Cormeum Mercedes SLS AMG will be limited to a production of a mere 15 cars, and it will offer drivers 600 HP with a future possibility of 800 HP.

The Mansory Cormeum leaves few reminders of the Mercedes SLS AMG. The sports car manufactured in Affalterbach is only the basis for the latest development of the automobile manufacturer Mansory Design & Holding GmbH situated in Brand near Bayreuth. 660 hp and 90 kg less weight are only two unique selling points of this exceptional automobile which can only be obtained in a limited edition of 15 cars. At first glance, the striking design created by its owner and head designer Kourosh Mansory can easily be discerned. Also the name was picked personally by Kourosh Mansory: An aria was already the source of his inspiration for the refined Bugatti Veyron (Vincerò) and this time this is the aria Vide Cor meum.

In order to meet the increased requirements of the sports car when it comes to light weight and torsional stiffness, Kourosh Mansory’s team optimises almost the entire car body and also exchanges the roof and the wing doors with ultra-light own developments. A Mansory front skirt replaces the serial bumper and due to its well-engineered shape it reduces the uplifting forces at the front axle. Larger air inlets in connection with a new LED light unit provide the two-seater with an even more dynamic face.

Additionally, the new front skirt supplies the enlarged cooler with more fresh air and subsequently propels the air out of the new bonnet. Mansory also replaces the front and rear mudguards with broader newly designed light-weight parts. Therefore, the Cormeum extends by 66 millimetres at the front axle and impressive 84 millimetres at the rear axle. Mansory side skirts make the two-seater look even lower and longer and perfectly enhance the rims. The rear has also been significantly redesigned by the aerodynamic specialists. The apron has been exchanged and a race diffuser renders additional downforce. A rear spoiler with carbon flaps completes the aerodynamic overall package.

The extended wheel houses of the Mansory Cormeum are filled with exclusive forged wheels with central locking. They measure 9×20 inches with 265/30er tyres at the front and 11×21 inches with 295/25er tyres at the rear axle. The tyres are provided by Mansory’s partner Michelin. Due to new springs and dampers, the Cormeum’ s centre of gravity is 20 mm lower than the basic model and therefore additionally emphasises the exclusive rims.

The core part of the engine modification is the adjustment of high-performance compressors. Also a sports air filter and a sports exhaust system made of stainless steel are fitted. These components are adjusted to each other with the help of a new map for engine electronics. With a top performance of 660 hp / 485 kW and a maximum torque of 4,850 r.p.m., the Mansory engine exactly meets the wishes of its ambitious motor sports clientele. Another performance increase up to 800 hp is already tested.

As usual, Mansory turns the interior into a highly functional control centre with unsurpassable quality and innovative design. Only most exquisite materials are used for the interior design and therefore render a high level of comfort. The leather which is processed with masterly skill is very endurable and still extraordinarily soft. The characteristic natural product with its special grain and the masterly perfected decorative stitches render an extravagant impression around the newly designed centre console. Another highlight is the newly developed full size airbag sports steering wheel. The aluminium pedals and the real carbon applications complete the luxurious overall impression of the Cormeum.

Hamann SLS AMG Hawk Set For World Premiere at Geneva Motor Show

The Hamann Hawk, based on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing, prepares for world debut in Geneva

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing is one of the most covetable vehicles of its time, praised for its power and undeniably gorgeous looks. Despite the adoration the Gullwing receives, German tuner Hamann still decided to take on the challenge of making it even better. The result of Hamann’s efforts is the Everose Gold SLS Hamann Hawk.

First on the list of improvements, the tuning experts at Hamann managed to squeeze some additional power into the V8 AMG Engine with enhancements to the exhaust system.  This new titanium exhaust in combination with new manifolds, sport catalysts and a sport air filter are responsible for the powerful, robust sound of the 6.2-liter unit.  From there, Hamann turned their attention to upgrading the ECU, with the end result being performance of 636hp and a maximum torque of 680 Nm at 4,850 rpm. In its race start mode, the SLS Hamann Hawk goes from from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 3.6 seconds, while top speed weighs in at an impressive 320km/h (198 mph).

Hamann also went to work on the interior of the Gullwing, adding to it leather and ultra-suede with Alcantara inserts and decorative stitching to replace the factory equipment. Air vents, the door sills and the center console have all been finished with Checkered Flag carbon, and new black anodized aluminum pedals offer drivers secure footing. Lastly, a newly designed sport steering wheel again serves to improve upon the standard SLS AMG’s ergonomics.

From a design standpoint, there’s a host of changes, starting with the Hawk’s front apron, which features larger air inlets combined with new LED lights units. In addition, the enlarged air inlets provide better access for the engine’s increased need for fresh air.  Subsequently, the air is drawn out of a new bonnet made of checkered flag carbon. The wheel arches, 60mm on each front side and 70mm on each rear side, are massive and striking, while side skirts make give the two-seater a lower stance. In the back, the new rear apron with the diffuser enhances the air flow under the bottom of the car and provides room for four 90mm end pipes, while a rear wing made of checkered flag carbon completes the styling.

As for the wheels, the SLS Hamann Hawk features 21-inch single-part lightforged wheels, which Hamann calls “Unique Forged Anodized”. The wheels are 9Jx21 with tires measuring 245/30 ZR21 in the front and 12.5Jx21with 345/25 ZR 21 at the rear.  Four adjustable coilover shock absorbers and four progressively coiled chassis springs have been added to the coilover kit, and the overall stance has been lowered by some 30mm.

The Hamann SLS AMG Hawk will make its official world debut at the upcoming 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

A big thank you to Markus for the tip.

Fastest Naturally Aspirated Mercedes-Benz Title Claimed by Modern Horsepower

Modern Horsepower Racer Mike Conforti broke his own Record as the World’s Quickest and Fastest Mercedes C63 AMG

Modern Horsepower Racer Mike Conforti broke his own Record as the World’s Quickest and Fastest Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, as well as the Quickest and Fastest Naturally Aspirated Mercedes-Benz in history in his 2009 C63 AMG at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, MD. Mike ran over seventeen 10 second quarter mile passes between 10.81-10.98 seconds at 131-132.45 mph before ripping off an incredible 10.78 seconds at 131.08mph on a 1.58 60′ without the help of nitrous oxide or a turbo or supercharger.

Mike also registered an eighth mile ET and Trap World Record of 6.95 seconds 101.67 mph on the same pass. Making these already incredible feats even more astonishing, was the fact that the density altitude (DA or calculated elevation including both actual elevation and weather data) was +1157’—typically in February at Maryland International Raceway the DA is in the -1000′ to -2000′ range making for quicker times and faster trap speeds due to cooler and denser air.

Mike’s list of modifications include MHP v4 CDT (Custom Race Spec ECU & TCU Remapping), MHP 1 7/8″ SS Longtube Headers with 3″ Midpipes, MHP 3″ SS Race Catback with X-pipe, MHP 180F Thermostat, MHP Thermal Gaskets, Lightweight Brake Rotors, a Carbon Fiber Hood, and Drag Radials. Mike’s C63 is presently making 630HP and 565lb/ft of Torque. When asked about his car’s performance despite the unseasonably warm weather Mike stated “We are very happy with the way the car ran pass after pass despite the April like weather. It really makes me wonder what the car is capable of in air more typical for this time of year. I think it might shock some people.” Mike also commented that “None of this would be possible without the help of Andy at Modern Horsepower, Craig at RPM North, and friend and fellow part time pro racer Hagi Djencic.”

Accompanying this tremendous achievement, MHP’s own project SL65 AMG ran an 11.26@128.30mph quarter mile, overcoming a not so hot 1.79 second 60′ in the process, making it the Quickest and Fastest Tune Only 65 AMG in the World, and also the Fastest SL65 in the World. This despite the only powertrain modifications being Complete Driveline Tuning via MHP v3 CDT (ECU & TCU Remapping), paired with aftermarket air filters and 18″ Drag Radials in +1249′ DA. Dyno results show the SL65 putting out an incredible 708HP and 989lb/ft of torque SAE on 93 octane. When asked about the SL65s track debut MHP President Andrew Cluck commented “If anything we were afraid of snow coming into the race so the weather definitely threw us for a loop. Taking that into consideration the car performed exactly as we thought it would despite it being our first time to the track with it. It will take us a few more passes to get the launch figured out, as any seasoned racer will tell you learning a car is not something that happens overnight. I believe we will run 10s@130mph+ with the modifications presently installed and a bit more seat time at the next event in March with the goal of taking the Overall SL65 AMG Record with just our ECU and TCU Tuning, Filters and Drag Radials.” Mr. Cluck went on to state “We have a solid game plan for modifying our SL65, initially consisting of redesigned and engineered air intakes and intercoolers, as well as freer flowing exhaust components. We will then move on to more extensive changes such as larger turbos to replace the small Bosch K24s turbos that come from the factory. Rest assured we will document increases in horsepower and torque at the track and on the dyno at every step along the way with the M275 V12, just as we have done with the M156 and M159 AMG V8s.”

The MHP Stage 1 Package for 65 AMG variants includes BMC air filters and MHP v3 CDT.

The following is a before and after Dyno Jet 248 Chassis dyno graph showing the differences in power and torque that MHPs potent ECU & TCU Tuning safely deliver over stock on 93 octane pump gas.

MHP SL65 AMG Tune Only Dyno Graph: 708HP & 989lb/ft of Torque on 93 Octane; gearheads take note, MHPs tune only SL65 AMG puts out 67lb/ft more twist than a 1.8M USD Bugatti Veyron (922lb/ft). All 989lb/ft are on tap by a mere 2800rpm and by 3700rpm the tuned 6.0L twin turbo V12 is already making 625HP.

Mercedes AMG, Ducati and Cigarette Partner to Become Ménage of Motorsports

"The Ménage of Motorsports," a dynamic display of performance machines, will be seen at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show

While the Mercedes AMG and Cigarette Racing Team alliance began based on the dedication to performance and perfection of these two luxury brands share, that synergy has now extended to another stellar performance brand, Ducati. “The Ménage of Motorsports,” a dynamic display of performance boats and two and four-wheeled vehicles, will be seen at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show, in Cigarette’s Booth B-23. The Ménage of Motorsports-the three luxury brands of Cigarette, Mercedes AMG and Ducati, are also partners on the AMG for members only “Private Lounge” website.

In the motorcycle industry, the name Ducati means performance and is one of the most sought-after name brands. As Germany is respected for its fine automobiles, Italy has earned admiration for creating the ultimate motorcycle for leisure and racing. Several Ducati bikes will be on display, including a Diavel, the 1198 SP, Multistrada and the Monster 1100 EVO. The Ducati brand completes the motorsports trifecta, adding two-wheeled power to the winning performance mix.

The new Cigarette 42X Ducati Edition, customized with Ducati’s signature white with a bold red stripe, is on display at the Cigarette booth and will feature another new addition to the Penchant for Performance. Mercury Racing has again added an engine to its line to accommodate every performance boater’s need-and selected Cigarette to make the debut. “Mercury Racing knows that Cigarette will put our time, effort and expertise behind its newest ventures,” says Skip Braver, president and CEO, who has taken Cigarette to new heights under his 9-years of ownership. “As we have with each new engine, our teams have worked together to validate the performance, ensuring that not only Cigarette customers, but all of Mercury Racing’s customers, benefit from the joint effort,” he adds. The new engine boasts 1,100 HP and #6 drives, representing a bridge between the SCi engines and the 1350 HP QVC4V engines that made their debut at the 2010 Miami Boat Show in the Inspired by AMG 46′ Cigarette.

The Ducati boat will also feature a new venture in sound as Cigarette teams with JL Audio. This purpose-built, updated sound system was designed specifically for Cigarette and includes digital amplifiers, time-aligned tweeters and a specially designed “bass array” subwoofer system. The new sound stage will enhance the listening experience, providing immersion rather than blaring onboard music. JL has tested and engineered the new efficient and attractive set up for Cigarette and its American-made design complements the American-made boat.

“As the three brands of Cigarette, Mercedes AMG and Ducati have joined forces, we find a synergy uniting us,” Braver states “It’s not just about going fast, it’s about how we design, build and create value and loyalty in our brands,” he adds.

In addition to the Cigarette array of powerboats and Ducati bikes, a special feature, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT-3 Race Car was flown in from Germany to supplement Cigarette’s salute to motorsports. This racing version of the SLS AMG gull-wing was created specifically for motorsports–for customers who compete in sprint or long-distance races. Its aerodynamic design lines and a 6-speed racing transmission with shift paddles provide the performance and success on the track that verifies AMG’s commitment to motorsports since its introduction in 1967.

“The Evolution of Cigarette” adds to the show display as Miami dealer, Phil Lipschutz of Lip-ship Performance, a National and World Title holder in the American Power Boat Association (APBA) displays two boats depicting his particular Penchant for Performance–a matching nostalgic 20′ and a new 50′ Marauder model. The Marauder is the largest Cigarette in the model line and though the 20′ is no longer built, it represents the smallest of the line to date. “It just shows that when it’s a Cigarette, size doesn’t matter!” says Skip Braver, President and CEO.

The 50′ Marauder is Lipschutz’ “Poker Run Edition” and was built with a new deck to enhance the aesthetic style of the boat. Though a minor change, the modification of the deck demonstrates Cigarette’s on-going effort to tweak and perfect each of its models. The Marauder is also the first 50′ Cigarette with 1350 HP SVC4V engines. The set up and balance of the new engines was highly optimized in this debut edition.

The 39 Top Fish center console adds another dimension to Cigarette’s powerboat lineup. This high-performance Cigarette was designed as a lifestyle offering, combining top-power with the convenience and ease of a center console. The 2011 model will sport a new fiberglass T-top that provides more sun coverage, aerodynamics and integrated LED lights. Triple Mercury Verado 300 engines power the boat which with 418 gallon fuel tanks, offers range, ensuring you get to your destination quickly-whether it’s your favorite fishing spot or a day of fun with friends and family. Added features of this performance recreational boat are a large stand-up head and shower, an additional transom shower, 40 gallons of fresh water, finished hatches-inside and out, and fully customized Cigarette options like painted hull, billet trim, storage, live wells, coolers, upholstery and embroidery. The Top Fish, available in both cuddy cabin and open-bow configurations, enjoys popularity not only domestically, but in the Middle Eastern and European markets.

Other Cigarette models on display will include a 46′ Rider with Mercury Racing 1350 engines and the M8 drive and the ever-popular 39 Top Gun Unlimited with Mercury Racing 700 SCi engines and #6 drives.

Cigarette’s dedication to personalization will also be demonstrated in the Cigarette Exclusive Design Studio set up in the booth for customers planning to build their new Cigarette. The “If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen one” slogan applies since each Cigarette is built to order with no two boats exactly alike. “All of our customers have their own preferences for color, style, logos and personalization,” says Braver, “We cater to that desire to customize by providing a wide range of options from paint, upholstery and embroidery to custom accessories and instrumentation. Your Cigarette is truly your creation and now we have a vibrant new palette of custom colors from Spies Hecker from which to choose as well,” he adds.

Cigarette will continue its focus on technology and product updates. “We listen to what our customers want and deliver a model range that fits every boating lifestyle,” says Braver, “If you are a boater, you will enjoy boating even more in a Cigarette. If you’re not a boater, Cigarette will make you want to be!”
