PRESS RELEASE

“AMG Uncovered” is a new and unscripted series of short videos celebrating the lives of AMG drivers and their cars. To launch the campaign, the first video features Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player and 2024 NBA All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with his Mercedes-AMG G 63.

The series showcases a host of AMG enthusiasts, ranging from devoted customers to celebrities from the worlds of sports, motor racing and fashion. This star-studded roster includes Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Australian supermodel Jess Hart, NASCAR racer James Kirkham and Theeba Motorsport driver Reema Juffali. Each personality owns and drives a different AMG model, including the AMG G 63, AMG GT, AMG SL Roadster and the AMG C 63.

Basketball star Gilgeous-Alexander is well-known for his ever-expanding collection of cars. However, he says the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is his car of choice to drive to practice and games.

“I try to drive my AMG G 63 as much as possible. It’s unique, swaggy and fun to drive. This car is an extension of me – which is why I was excited when AMG asked me to be a part of its new ‘Uncovered’ series. It’s cool to see how other AMG owners use their cars – and sharing my passion for this brand with the AMG community.”
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, professional basketball player

Conceptualised and shot by Rankin Creative, the “AMG Uncovered” content series is designed to feel like a natural and authentic insight into the motoring lives of these AMG owners. By using an off-camera moderator to guide the conversation, “AMG Uncovered” presents an intimate conversation with the chosen personality through the lens of their car. In each film, the star gives an exclusive walkaround of the car, focusing on everything from their favourite details to individual modifications. As the stories unfold, each owner reveals a few surprise items they keep hidden away in their vehicle. These travelling essentials range from a bespoke racing helmet and a vintage BMX bike to the requisite sunglasses, bags of candy and a dog called Echo. These unscripted moments are a deliberate move to step away from the more traditional, glossy and staged style of product videos. As a result, the Mercedes-AMG cars and the personalities are at the centre of each narrative, often with unexpected and emotional storylines.

“We keep hearing from our customers how much they love their AMGs. With ‘AMG Uncovered’, we want to capture this emotional connection in the most authentic way possible. Through the video series, there are always entertaining insights that showcase how the protagonists have turned the vehicles into their own personal AMG. In this way, viewers can immerse themselves in the lives of our customers.”
Judith Luise Sauter, Head of Product Marketing AMG & Sales Top-End-Vehicles

Mercedes AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ Motorsport Collectors Edition

Mercedes-AMG is presenting a special model of the SL 63 4MATIC+ and it is automotive perfection

To mark the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Mercedes-AMG is presenting a special model of the SL 63 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption: 13.2–12.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 300‑291 g/km)[1]. It reflects the look of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E PERFORMANCE racing car. The colour graduation from high-tech silver metallic to obsidian black metallic is inspired by the model from the top class of motorsport. The same is true of the star pattern on the vehicle flanks and the PETRONAS-coloured contrasts: these can be found on the front apron, side sill panels and rear diffuser. Added to this are 21-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke forged wheels in a matt black finish with PETRONAS-coloured rim flanges. The electric soft top is in black.

The AMG Aerodynamics package not only dramatises the appearance: larger flics on the front and rear apron, the larger rear diffuser and the active profile in the underbody improve the aerodynamic properties. The same applies to the downforce and aerodynamic drag. This all brings advantages for the driving characteristics at high speeds and for improved efficiency.

The AMG Night package and the AMG Night package II enhance the visual appearance of the “Motorsport Collectors Edition”. With the AMG Night package, selected exterior features are finished in high‑gloss black: the front splitter, side sill panels, mirror caps and the decorative trim in the rear diffuser. Added to this are darkened exhaust tailpipes. The AMG Night package II adds further features in black chrome, including the radiator grille, typography and Mercedes star at the rear. In addition, the interior components of the headlamps and rear lights are darkened. The brake callipers of the AMG high-performance composite brake system are also painted black. The AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with “AMG” lettering also emphasises the special status of the edition.

The standard AMG Performance seats are available with two upholsteries: in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with red topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints, or in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with yellow topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints. The AMG carbon-fibre trim harmonises with the heated AMG Performance steering wheel with carbon-fibre rim.

The Burmester® high end 3D surround sound system, ambient lighting, the MBUX Interior Assistant, the Driving Assistance package and the head-up display are included as standard in this very extensively equipped special model. AMG TRACK PACE provides support with a wide range of data when driving on the racetrack. The Load Compartment package increases everyday practicality, while the illuminated AMG door sill panels welcome passengers with the AMG logo.

To protect the valuable edition model it is equipped with GUARD 360o. In addition, every customer receives a customised AMG indoor car cover with logo. With its breathable outer skin made of tear-resistant synthetic fabric and an anti-static inner lining of woven flannel, this protects the vehicle from dust and scratches in the garage.

The New Mercedes-AMG A-Class

The new A-Class also makes its debut at Mercedes‑AMG

Power and style in a compact format – the new A-Class also makes its debut at Mercedes‑AMG and thus forms the sporty top end of the model series. The top model Mercedes‑AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 9.2‑8.8 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 208‑200 g/km)2 and especially the Mercedes‑AMG A 35 4MATIC (Hatchback fuel consumption combined 8.6-8.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 196‑188g/km; Saloon fuel consumption combined 8.5‑8.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 192‑184g/km)2 benefit from the refresh from Affalterbach. With its revised look, the A 35 moves even closer to the AMG family and is still available as a Hatchback and as a Saloon, while the A 45 S is available as a Hatchback as before.

Exterior: The revised front headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator grille and the new, round badge with the AMG emblem instead of the Mercedes star with a laurel wreath, immediately stand out when l

ooking at the new Mercedes‑AMG A-Class. In addition, a new front apron and the power bulges familiar from the A 45 provide the A 35 with a new, coherent AMG face. The AMG look is underlined by the new wheel design, the rear spoiler lip, revised rear headlamps and the hallmark round exhaust pipes (twin-flow on the Mercedes‑AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+).

Interior: As standard, the new Mercedes-AMG A-Class offers the AMG Performance steering wheel including AMG steering wheel buttons, with which the driver can control AMG-specific features such as the three-stage ESP or AMG Dynamics – without taking their hand off the steering wheel. In addition, the familiar AMG performance seat is now also available in the trendy sage grey colour.

Technology: There is also an engine update in the Mercedes-AMG A-Class. In line with the production models, the Mercedes-AMG A 35 is equipped with a 48-volt auxiliary power supply and belt-driven starter-generator (RSG) and achieves an output of 225 kW/306 hp with a maximum torque of 400 Nm. As a mild hybrid, the RSG supports agility with 10 kW more power at start-up. In addition, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8-speed transmission is now on board and the new front radiator facilitates temperature management at the limit.

Infotainment & connectivity: The new Mercedes-AMG A-Class also benefits from the latest MBUX generation: Increased performance, the integration of the fingerprint sensor (expected to be available from the 1st quarter of 2023) for profile authorisation in the central display, more USB charging power and the new hallmark AMG screen design make driving in the new AMG A-Class an interactive pleasure.

AMG Street Style Edition: For the market launch of the new Mercedes-AMG A-Class, a very special version of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ will also be available exclusively and for a limited time: The AMG Street Style Edition impresses with extrovert and exclusive equipment elements. With the base paint in mountain grey magno and the edition-specific foiling with colour gradient in black/anthracite matt and colour accents in fluorescent orange, it emphasises the elements of the Aerodynamics Package. The look is perfectly complemented by the newly designed 19-inch wheels in matt black and the bright red brake callipers.

In keeping with all this, the interior of the AMG Street Style Edition is also unmistakable: the AMG Performance seat in black MICROCUT microfibre is adorned with seams and highlights in bright orange. The orange label on the headrest quickly makes it clear which edition from Mercedes-AMG we are talking about here. The AMG Performance steering wheel in leather/MICROCUT with contrasting orange stitching and the AMG trim elements in aluminium with the same pattern as the exterior foiling add further accents to the interior.

With its four cylinders, the AMG Street Style Edition produces 310 kW (421 hp) and comes with the AMG Aerodynamics Package, the AMG Night Package I and II and the stand-alone AMG fuel filler cap.

Mercedes-AMG: “55 years – changing the game”

The new brand campaign notices this extraordinary development with the claim "55 years - changing the game"

Founded in 1967 by engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the company has continued to build on its position as one of the leading performance and sports car brands through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars. Legendary model icons such as the 300 SEL 6.9 AMG racing touring car, the 300 E 5.6 “The Hammer”, the CLK DTM or the SLS AMG Electric Drive have repeatedly confirmed the brand’s reputation as a gamechanger.

This is still true today: the Mercedes-AMG ONE brings modern and efficient Formula 1™ hybrid drive technology from the racetrack to the road for the first time in the world (fuel consumption weighted, combined: 8.7 l/100 km; combined weighted CO2 emissions: 198 g/km; combined weighted electrical consumption: 32 kWh/100 km)[1]. With one combustion engine and four electric motors, the hypercar produces a total of 782 kW (1063 hp) and proves how the Future of Driving Performance sets new records.

The Vision AMG design study provides a glimpse of the future: Beneath the shell of the four-door coupé is the independent AMG.EA platform, which is currently being developed in Affalterbach for all-electric performance models with revolutionary e-drive technology.

“AMG has been reinventing itself again and again for 55 years. As was once the case with our founding fathers, there is a very special spirit of optimism in Affalterbach today. The course is clearly set for an electrified future. And as in all the past years, our standards for future projects are extremely high. I am proud that we can rely on the best employees at our location. Because they are real gamechangers that make AMG so special. And we want to emphasise that just as much with our campaign,” says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Brand campaign with authentic people and car stories

“55 years – changing the game” notices this spirit and translates it into a 360-degree social media campaign – with authentic stories of people and vehicles as video clips and stills. The implementation contains numerous, mutually complementary elements. AMG employees communicate their statements on “changing the game” via their social channels. The Brand Ambassadors will.i.am, Susie Wolff, David Coulthard and Lewis Hamilton underline the core message with their statements and build the bridge from tradition into the future.

Iconic pairings of historic and current as well as future vehicles bear witness to the brand’s unbroken innovative power. In addition, editorial contributions on the official Mercedes-AMG website, a special exhibition in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, a temporary exhibition in the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach, as well as a special episode “Inside AMG” on YouTube pay tribute to the 55th anniversary of AMG from different perspectives. This also applies to direct customer contact at the point of sale. Here, backdrops with the key visuals refer to the anniversary. Particularly exciting has been the renewed collaboration with various content creators like Sparkly.jada, kayo.daniel or Nictures, who, in keeping with the campaign, are distributing clips on the TikTok platform about “changing the game”.

The current Mercedes-AMG portfolio comprises more than fifty vehicles. The selection ranges from performance vehicles in various body styles to completely independently developed sports cars such as the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door model and the new Mercedes-AMG SL. The range of powertrains has also been continuously developed in line with market requirements and customer wishes and currently offers efficiency-optimised combustion engines with four, six or eight cylinders. In addition, Mercedes-AMG is consistently pursuing the path of the Future of Driving Performance: Performance hybrids with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1™ are offered under the E PERFORMANCE label. The portfolio also includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Group’s own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new, completely in-house developed electrical architecture (AMG.EA).

[1] The figures for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are provisional and were determined internally in accordance with the “WLTP test procedure” certification method. Confirmed values from the technical service or an EC type approval or certificate of conformity with official values are not yet available. Differences between the stated figures and the official figures are possible.

The new Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 4MATIC+

The super-sportscars in the compact class

With its new compact sports models Mercedes-AMG is demonstrating its high competence in development once again: “We have completely redesigned our “45” models – from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain to the body structure and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class. With the presentation of this, our most powerful and most dynamic compact sports car, we are also reinforcing the significance of this segment for our growth strategy”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ und CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ und CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

Exterior design: AMG family membership even more apparent

The new Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 4MATIC+ models are even more distinctive than their predecessors. The exterior conveys sheer driving pleasure even at standstill. For the first time, the compact class now also features the AMG-specific radiator grille with a wider lower contour and twelve vertical louvres – as a clear indicator of AMG Performance family membership. At the same time, the pronounced “shark nose”, the slim, deeply contoured headlamps and the flat, aerodynamically favourable bonnet with powerdomes visually lower the front section to create the impression of extremely dynamic forward thrust.

The imposing presence is also accentuated by the wider front wings with flared wheel arches. These create space for the wider front axle, and underline the athletic appearance. This muscular impression is even stronger with the A 45 4MATIC+ than with the CLA 45 4MATIC+, as the basic CLA already has a wider front track and the wings could be flared to a lesser extent.

Individual details as distinguishing features

The front apron is also a distinguishing feature. In the A 45 4MATIC+ it is in a jet-wing design. Horizontal fins in the outer air inlets and the stretched lower air inlet emphasise the impression of width. The CLA 45 4MATIC+ has an even more expressive appearance with its jet-like external air inlets, showing its close family relationship with the AMG GT 4-door Coupé. The front splitter transitions seamlessly into the side air curtains ahead of the front wheels, which optimise the airflow to improve aero-performance and the Cd figure.

Viewed from the side, the wider AMG side skirts visually lower these compact sportscars so that they appear to hug the road more closely. If the Silver Chrome package is specified, the inserts are in silver chrome, and with the AMG Night package they are in high-gloss black.

The exterior mirrors are mounted on the door muscle, echoing the look of Mercedes-AMG coupés and sportscars. This not only looks very sporty, but also improves the aerodynamics.

As standard the basic variants feature 8.5 J x 18-inch light alloy wheels in a 10-spoke design, aerodynamically optimised and painted in tantalum grey with size 245/40 R 18 tyres.

The S-models are equipped with 19-inch light alloy wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design ‑ with a width of 8.5 inches for the A 45 S 4MATIC+ and nine inches for the CLA 45 S 4MATIC+. The attractive aluminium rims are aerodynamically optimised and painted in tantalum grey with a high-sheen finish, and shod with tyres in size 245/35 R 19 and 255/35 R 19 (CLA 45) respectively. In the basic models the AMG high-performance braking system features grey-painted brake callipers with white AMG lettering. The S-versions are recognisable by their larger, red-painted 6-piston brake callipers with black AMG lettering.

Round twin exhaust tailpipes for the Performance compact cars

The rear view is characterised by two round twin tailpipes (82 mm diameter) and the wide rear apron. The S-models are distinguished by their larger, 90 mm exhaust tailpipes with internal fluting and AMG lettering. The impression of width at the rear is emphasised further by the slim two-piece rear light clusters. The diffuser with two vertical twin fins contributes to better aero-performance (CLA 45: four individual fins) – it is extended forward at the centre of the vehicle, making it work more effectively. The effect is rounded off by the spoiler lip in the vehicle colour on the roof spoiler, or on the boot lid (CLA 45).

The most important optional exterior features:

  • AMG Aerodynamic package for optimised aerodynamic balance, included a modified front splitter and additional flics on the front apron, an additional diffuser blade, side spoiler lips on the rear apron and rear spoiler (A 45) or larger spoiler lip (CLA 45) in high-gloss black. These features increase the downforce, and therefore handling stability at the physical limits
  • 19-inch light-alloy wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design, aerodynamically optimised, painted either in tantalum grey with a high-sheen finish or in matt black with high-sheen rim flange
  • 19-inch forged wheels in a cross-spoke design, painted either in titanium grey with high-sheen finish or in matt black with high-sheen rim flange, with simulated central wheel lock in aluminium
  • AMG Night package with design features in high-gloss black ‑ for example the front splitter or inserts in the sideskirts ‑ and black chromed exhaust tailpipes
  • Silver Chrome package with front splitter and inserts in the sideskirts in silver chrome

Bodyshell: extensively reinforced

The AMG developers extensively reinforced the bodyshell, as it provides the basis for the precise self-steering characteristics, as well as track and camber stability, also when driving at high speed. A lightweight aluminium plate bolted underneath the engine – the “shearing plate” – increases the torsional rigidity at the vehicle’s front end. This is supplemented by a strut tower brace between the front suspension struts and pistol-shhaped “shotguns”  ‑ these are additional reinforcing plates connecting the side members to the A-pillars to minimise movements of the front section. Diagonal struts at the front and rear of the underbody further improve rigidity. As a result the entire suspension system responds highly precisely even at the physical limits, giving the driver clearly defined feedback – with considerably reduced body torsion around the longitudinal and transverse axis, and less rolling and pitching on bends, when braking and during load cycles.

Drive system: new turbocharged four-cylinder with ample power

With an output of up to 310 kW (421 hp), the completely newly developed 2.0-litre engine is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder manufactured for series production. Mercedes-AMG has bettered the output of the preceding engine by 30 kW(40 hp). Maximum torque has also increased from 475 to up to 500 newton metres. With an output per litre of up to 155 kW (211 hp), the new Mercedes-AMG high-performance turbo engine even ranks ahead of many well-known super-sports car engines. The new, highly efficient powerpack is produced on an innovative production line in Affalterbach, on the “One Man, One Engine” principle.

In the 45 models, the four-cylinder ensures extremely agile performance in two output classes: with 310 kW (421 hp) as the S-model and with 285 kW (387 hp) in the basic version.

This positioning logic has already proved successful for the AMG Performance models with a V8 engine, and meets individual customer wishes even better. The new compact sportscars absolve the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in record time: the A 45 S 4MATIC+ requires only 3.9 seconds (CLA 45 S 4MATIC+: 4.0 seconds), while the basic A 45 4MATIC+ model absolves this discipline in 4.0 seconds (CLA 45 4 MATIC+ in 4.1 seconds). The top speed of the basic models is electronically limited to 250 km/h, while the S-models are capable of up to 270 km/h ex factory. With the optional AMG Driver‘s Package, the top speed can also be increased to 270 km/h for the basic variants.

Apart from its performance figures, the new engine impresses with its immediate response. To this end the torque curve was carefully balanced (“torque shaping”): The maximum torque of 500 Nm (480 Nm in the basic variants) is available within a range of 5000-5250 rpm (4750-5000 rpm in the basic variants). With this configuration the AMG engineers have achieved a power delivery akin to a naturally aspirated engine. The engine developers were able to realise a dynamically increasing torque curve in the lower engine speed range, thereby improving throttle response. The increasing torque at higher rpm makes the engine more free-revving. Moreover, the high maximum engine speed (up to 7200 rpm) emphasises the engine’s sporty character.

Engine design: intelligent details

The new engine excels with numerous intelligent design features. Unlike the likewise transversely installed four-cylinder in the 35 models or the preceding model, the new engine is rotated around its vertical axis by 180 degrees. This means that the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold are now positioned at the rear, on the side of the firewall when viewed from behind. The intake system is therefore positioned at the front. This configuration allows the flattest possible and aerodynamically advantageous front section design. Furthermore, the new arrangement allows much improved air ducting with shorter distances and fewer diversions – both on the intake and exhaust side.

Turbocharger: roller bearings reduce mechanical friction

The new twinscroll turbocharger combines optimum responsiveness at low engine speeds with a high power in the upper rpm range. In addition to this, the turbine housing is divided into two flow passages which run parallel to one another.

Together with the likewise divided ducts in the exhaust manifold, this makes it possible to feed the exhaust flow to the turbine separately. The aim is to prevent the individual cylinders from influencing each other negatively during load cycles, and to improve the gas cycle. The result is higher torque at lower engine speeds, and extremely good responsiveness.

Furthermore, the shafts of the compressor and turbine have roller bearings for the first time ‑ as in the top output variant of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine in the AMG GT 4-door Coupé. The roller bearings reduce mechanical friction within the turbocharger to a minimum. The charger therefore responds more readily and reaches its maximum speed of up to 169,000 rpm more rapidly.

Charge pressure: electronically controlled for optimum responsiveness

With a maximum charge pressure of 2.1 bar, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is also the leader in its segment in this respect. The electronically controlled wastegate (exhaust relief valve) allows the charge pressure to be controlled even more precisely and flexibly while optimising responsiveness, especially when accelerating from partial load. Numerous parameters are taken into account in this process. The main input signals for the wastegate control unit are the charge pressure, throttle flap position and the knocking tendency. The modifying signals include the intake air temperature, engine temperature, engine speed and atmospheric pressure. This also makes temporary boosting of the charge pressure (overboost) possible under acceleration.

Fresh air is used in addition to oil and water to cool the turbocharger. This is directed specifically to the charger from the radiator grille, via the engine cover designed as an air deflector and ducts beneath the bonnet. The concept is based on the principles and experience gained with the cooling for the internally mounted turbochargers of the current AMG 4.0-litre V8 engines, starting with the AMG GT in 2014. In addition the turbine housing has integral insulation.

Crankcase: all-aluminium with outstanding properties

The all-aluminium crankcase is a chill-cast unit which excels with outstanding material properties. In this process the molten aluminium is poured into the metallic mould using the effect of gravity.

Thanks to its good thermal conductivity, the water-cooled mould allows rapid cooling and solidification of the melt. The result is a fine-grained, dense structure that guarantees very high strength. Complex interior geometries can be realised with the help of enclosed sand cores.

The so-called closed-deck construction – a design taken from motorsport ‑ ensures maximum rigidity with low weight and allows peak combustion pressures of up to 160 bar. The areas around the cylinders are mostly solid, and the cover plate is only penetrated by smaller ducts for the coolant and engine oil. The crank assembly with a lightweight, forged steel crankshaft and forged aluminium pistons with optimised piston rings combines low friction with high strength. The maximum engine speed is 7200 rpm, and peak output is developed at 6750 rpm. The sump features baffle plates so that despite the larger sump, and even under high lateral acceleration forces, there is always sufficient engine oil to lubricate all the relevant components.

Cylinder liners: coated with NANOSLIDE

To reduce friction between the pistons and cylinders, the linings are coated using patented NANOSLIDE technology. This gives the linings a mirror-like surface for minimal friction, is twice as hard as conventional grey cast-iron liners and therefore makes them much more durable. NANOSLIDE was developed by Daimler AG, and is protected by more than 90 patent families and more than 40 patents. This coating was first used in AMG’s M 156 V8 engine, has enhanced other AMG engines for many years and can also be found in the Formula 1 engine of Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport.

Exhaust valves: larger dimensions for faster gas cycles

In the cylinder head, the repositioned and slightly angled injection nozzles and spark plug system have allowed much larger exhaust valves than in the preceding engine. The larger exhaust cross-sections allow the gases to stream out of the combustion chambers with low losses, and reduce the overall piston venting action.

Two overhead camshafts control the 16 valves via weight-optimised roller cam followers. Camshaft adjustment on the inlet and outlet side allows an excellent response and optimises the gas cycle for each operating point.

Variable CAMTRONIC valve control on the exhaust side is another feature, with two cams per valve. The cams have different geometries, so that depending on the cam setting to suit the driving situation, the exhaust valves can be opened for short or long periods – for even better responsiveness at low engine speeds, comfortable and fuel-efficient driving at medium rpm and full power delivery in the upper rpm range.

Petrol injection: two stages for optimised power

Turbocharging and direct injection with a spray guided combustion process not only allow a high power yield, but also improve thermodynamic efficiency and therefore reduce both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

For the first time, the new high-performance four-cylinder has two-stage fuel injection. In the first stage the particularly fast and precisely operating piezo injectors supply fuel to the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 200 bar. This is a multiple process at times, and is controlled by the engine management system as required.

In the second stage there is additional intake manifold injection using solenoid valves. This is needed to achieve the engine”s high specific output. The electronically controlled fuel supply has an operating pressure of 6.7 bar.

Cooling: sophisticated system for the engine, turbocharger and charge air

The high output requires an intelligently conceived cooling system. This is so designed that the cylinder head and crankcase can be cooled to different temperature levels. This innovative measure allows a cold cylinder head for maximum output with efficient ignition timing, and a warm crankcase to reduce in-engine friction.

The coolant to the cylinder head is supplied by a mechanical high-performance water pump, while cooling of the crankcase is via a second, electrically driven water pump. After a cold start, this pump remains passive until the engine has warmed up. In operation it is regulated by the engine control unit so that the crankcase is always cooled according to need.

Moreover, the pump can be switched on or off as required when less output is needed, or at low engine speeds. Furthermore, the electric water pump ensures the full engine output and optimum heat dissipation over the entire engine speed range. It also protects against thermal damage when idling in very high ambient temperatures.

In addition the engine has an oil temperature management function which controls the warm-up phase and flexibly regulates the engine oil temperature. This brings the engine to its operating temperature more rapidly, reducing friction and wear. This is accompanied by the environmentally friendly ancillary effect that fuel consumption and cold start emissions are also reduced.

The engine’s high degree of supercharging calls for a high-performance intercooler. So that the charge air can be cooled close to the ambient temperature despite the extreme quantities of heat, for the first time a 2-stage, indirect intercooler has been developed. It works in conjunction with the air conditioning system, and is used in the S-models where it has been integrated into the low-temperature circuit. For this was necessary to completely redesign the configuration of the condenser in the front end. One condenser is located in the wheel arch, and a second one is positioned in first row of the central cooling module. The separate condenser and radiator configuration and thermal management specifically designed to meet (everyday) requirements and (racetrack) performance enable efficient and coordinated cooling performance.

Functions such as alternator management, the ECO start/stop function with fast restarting, the gliding function and a petrol particulate filter are also part of the technology package for the new AMG four-cylinder.

Digital and smart hand assembly: “One man, one engine”

The new engine is entirely assembled by hand. To this end a completely newly designed production line was constructed in the AMG engine manufactory in Affalterbach, where Mercedes-AMG has raised the “One Man, One Engine” principle and Industry 4.0 processes to an innovative level reflecting the latest findings in ergonomics, material flows, quality assurance, sustainability and efficiency. On the road to implementing Industry 4.0, AMG’s hand assembly operation likewise follows the vision of “smart production”.

This excels with maximum flexibility, and is transparent and highly efficient. It safeguards and improves the quality of the engines and production processes using innovative and digital technologies.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission: agile and responsive

The 8-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission likewise contributes to the agile and dynamic character. The gear ratios have been configured so that the driver experiences very spontaneous acceleration in all speed ranges, combined with fast shifting and optimum connections when shifting up. Depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode, the driver receives a specific drive configuration with different accelerator and gearshift characteristics.

Anyone who prefers to change gear for themselves can select the manual transmission mode in every drive program. Using the temporary M-mode, this is possible very rapidly merely by operating a steering wheel shift paddle.

The standard RACE-START function allows maximum acceleration from stationary, a highly emotional experience. This also applies to the drive sound with partial ignition interruption when changing up a gear, and the automatic double-declutching function when changing down. Neither is efficiency neglected: in “Comfort” mode the ECO start/stop function is active; the “gliding” function can be selected in the “Individual” driving mode.

AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with AMG TORQUE CONTROL

The extremely dynamic driving experience in a completely new dimension is greatly assisted by the fully variable all-wheel drive included as standard. The secret is AMG TORQUE CONTROL in the new rear axle differential: This has two electronically controlled multidisc clutches, each of which is connected to a rear axle drive shaft. In this way the drive power can not only be completely variably distributed between the front and rear wheels, but also selectively between the left and right rear wheel. This means that depending on the driving mode and situation, the drive torque can be separately distributed to both rear wheels.

The result is consistently optimum traction, even in adverse road conditions and during extreme cornering manoeuvres, for example on the racetrack. Furthermore, this sophisticated solution allows Drift mode (standard in the S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for the basic models), which makes “powersliding” possible for even more driving pleasure.

Drift mode can be called up in the “RACE” driving mode using the shift paddles, provided that ESP® is deactivated and the transmission is in manual mode.

Electro-mechanical control: fast response irrespective of engine speed

Control of the drive torque to the front and rear axle, and between the two rear wheels, is electro-mechanical. The influencing factors for torque distribution are not only the driving speed, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration and the steering angle, but also the difference in rotational speed between the individual wheels, the gear selected and the accelerator position.

The main advantages of electro-mechanical control over an electro-hydraulic system relate to more refined driving dynamics – primarily due to the significantly faster response and speed-independent actuation of the discs over the entire adjustment range.

The all-wheel drive control is dependent on the selected driving mode and the AMG DYNAMICS setting. In “Basic” and “Advanced”, the 4MATIC system is in “Comfort” mode. In “Pro” and “Master” (standard for S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for basic models) the 4MATIC system switches to “Sport” mode ‑ for even more agile handling and an even higher threshold for the critical limits.

Before the system intervenes, 3-stage ESP® with individual control strategies in SPORT HANDLING MODE allows greater drift angles for a sporty driving style. When entering bends, the “45” models have an even more agile response thanks to braking intervention at the inner rear wheel ‑ depending on the selected AMG DYNAMICS mode or driving mode

Suspension: specific components for highly dynamic handling

The new AMG suspension with specific spring elements and the new,  frequency-selective shock absorbers provides the basis for high directional stability and highly dynamic cornering characteristics with low body roll. At the same time comfort has been improved compared to the preceding model. The longitudinal and transverse dynamics are perfectly coordinated.

All suspension components have been thoroughly revised in order to achieve a higher maximum lateral acceleration together with easy vehicle control at the limits.

A McPherson strut design is used at the front axle. Suspension is taken care of by one wishbone below the wheel centre, one spring strut and one tie rod respectively. The special axle geometry reduces the influence of the drive on the steering – for high comfort and agile handling. The new wishbone in aluminium reduces the unsprung masses enabling a more sensitive response from the springs. The brake callipers at the front axle are radially bolted – a technology from motorsport for more stability. The front axle carrier is rigidly attached and thus additionally stiffens the front section.

The 4-link rear suspension is likewise rigidly connected to the body via a rear axle carrier, and therefore very torsionally rigid. There are three transverse control arms and one trailing arm plus specific bearings per rear wheel. This design ensures maximum driving stability and agility.

AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptively adjustable damping: with three modes

The optional AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive damping system enables the driver to choose between three different suspension control modes. The spectrum ranges from comfort-focused to sporty. The system operates fully automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions. This happens within milliseconds and is infinitely variable, with a wide spread of damping characteristics. The result is that it ride comfort and agility are enhanced in equal measure.

High-performance braking system: fade-resistant and reliable

The high-performance braking system ensures fade-resistant deceleration and short braking distances. In the basic models, the 4-piston monobloc fixed front callipers act on 350 x 34 millimetre brake discs, while at the rear axle, 1-piston floating callipers act on 330 x 22 millimetre brake discs. The discs are internally ventilated and perforated to better dissipate heat and prevent brake fading, even with extreme use. The grey-painted brake callipers have white AMG lettering.

The S-models and the basic models with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package are decelerated by an even larger braking system equipped with 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 millimetre brake discs at the front. In this case the brake callipers are painted red and bear a black AMG logo.

Steering: with special steering rack and variable ratio

The speed-sensitive, electro-mechanical sports power steering supports a sporty driving style with its direct turn-in ability. It has a special rack with variable transmission ratio and two characteristic curves: depending on which drive program the driver has selected, it provides taut and sporty or more comfort-biased steering feedback. The rigid mounting in the integral carrier connects the steering even better with the body and thus increases steering precision.

AMG exhaust system: with exhaust flap for sound modulation

As standard the exhaust system has an exhaust flap which is automatically controlled depending on the engine speed and load. Depending on the drive program selected it modulates the sound from harmoniously discreet (in the programs Slippery, Comfort and Sport) to emotively sporty (in Sport+).

Six driving modes: vehicle characteristics with wide spread

The six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, “Individual” and “RACE” (standard for S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for basic models) allow a wide spread of vehicle characteristics, from comfortable to dynamic.

Numerous relevant parameters are modified:

  • Powertrain: accelerator characteristics, shift times and timing, sound characteristics with the options of Reduced, Moderate, Sport or Dynamic
  • Transmission: automatic or manual
  • AMG DYNAMICS: Agility functions such as all-wheel control, steering characteristics and additional ESP®functions in Basic, Advanced, Pro or Master versions (standard for S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for basic models)
  • Exhaust system: Sound and nature of the sound functions, Balanced or Powerful
  • Chassis (with optional AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension): in Comfort, Sport, Sport+

The individual drive programs offer an individual driving experience, precisely tailored to different driving conditions and driver requirements.

  • “Slippery”: Optimum adaptation to suit slippery and icy road surface conditions, with reduced power requirement and flat torque curve. Smooth gear changes and earlier upshifting support the driving impression characterised by stability.
  • “Comfort”: comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, e.g. thanks to very early upshifts. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort. In addition, the ECO start/stop function is active here.
  • “Sport”: sporty characteristics thanks to a more agile response to the driver’s accelerator pedal input, shorter shift times, earlier downshifts and significantly more emotive gearshifts owing to double de-clutching. A more dynamic suspension and steering set-up.
  • “Sport+”: extremely sporty characteristics thanks to an even more agile throttle response, increased acoustic emphasis on double de-clutching during downshifts as well as selective torque control on upshifts with cylinder suppression for optimal shift times. Increased idle speed for faster pulling away. An even more dynamic set-up for suspension, steering and drivetrain.
  • “RACE”: For highly dynamic driving on enclosed racetracks. In this program, all of the parameters are configured for maximum performance.
  • “Individual”: Makes it possible to select and store individual parameters according to personal preferences. In addition, the gliding function is available in the “Reduced” and “Moderate” drive settings.

AMG DYNAMICS: more agility with high stability

As a feature of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, the new 45 models have AMG DYNAMICS. This integrated vehicle dynamics control extends the stabilising functions of ESP® with agility-enhancing intervention in the all-wheel control, steering characteristics and additional ESP® functions. When cornering at speed, for example, brief braking intervention at the inner rear wheel generates a defined yawing motion around the vertical axis for responsive and precise entry into the bend.

The spectrum ranges from extremely stable to highly dynamic. On the multimedia display, when a drive program is selected, the new AMG DYNAMICS symbol is displayed together with the corresponding additional information.

  • “Basic” is assigned to the “Slippery” and “Comfort” drive programs. In this case the compact sportscars exhibit very stable handling with a high level of yaw damping.
  • “Advanced” is activated in the “Sport” program. The 45 models remain neutrally balanced. The lower yaw damping, lower steering angle requirement and enhanced agility support dynamic manoeuvres such as driving on winding country roads.
  • “Pro” (short for “Professional”) belongs to the “Sport+” program. In “Pro” the driver receives even more assistance for dynamic driving manoeuvres while agility and feedback from the road when cornering are further enhanced.
  • “Master” is linked to the “RACE” driving mode (standard for S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for basic models). “Master” mode is aimed at drivers who want to experience dynamism and the driving enjoyment on closed-off circuits. “Master” offers a vehicle balance with slight oversteer, a low steering angle requirement and more agile steering. In this way, “Master” ensures maximum agility and fully exploits the dynamic potential. To activate “Master” mode, the driver must use the separate button in the centre console to switch the ESP® to ESP® SPORT Handling Mode or ESP®

In the “Individual” drive program, the driver can set the AMG DYNAMICS levels “Basic”, “Advanced”, “Pro” and “Master” themselves.

Interior: close symbiosis between man and machine

With its sporty appointments and the MBUX infotainment system, the high-quality interior creates a close, personal connection between man and machine. The driver and front passenger are seated in an active position on contoured sport seats with firm lateral support. The standard upholstery as a combination of black ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfibre is timeless, and creates typical AMG highlights with double topstitching in red. The colour scheme is echoed by the red designo seat belts and the dashboard support trim in black DINAMICA microfibre with a red border. The chromed air vents are likewise upgraded with a red ring. As an alternative an upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather in neva grey/black with mid-grey double topstitching and light-longitudinal-grain aluminium trim is available.

S-models: yellow highlights to emphasised the motor racing heritage

The A 45 S and CLA 45 S even go a step further: yellow highlights reoccur throughout the interior to emphasise the motor racing character of the more powerful models. Also included in the standard equipment are the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre with contrasting yellow topstitching, a yellow 12 o’clock marking, AMG steering wheel buttons and AMG logo, plus ambience lighting.

In all models, the centre console in high-gloss black with a touchpad as standard has a further control array with additional switches controlling the 3-stage ESP®, the manual transmission mode and the optional adaptive damping system AMG RIDE CONTROL. In combination with the optional leather package, it features a silver chrome console surround.

The characteristic, sporty AMG ambience is also enhanced by the sports pedal cluster of brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, black floor mats with AMG lettering and a surround in a nubuck leather look, the black fabric roof liner and AMG front entry sills in brushed stainless steel with “AMG” lettering.

MBUX infotainment system: with AMG-specific displays

The combination of sporty design and sophisticated details is also featured in the MBUX infotainment system with its innovative operating and display concept. MBUX creates an even closer connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers. Emotionally appealing presentations underline the clear control structure and feature brilliant maximum-resolution 3D graphics. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.

The customer can choose between the three AMG display styles “Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport” for the instrument cluster. The “Supersport” mode is particularly striking with a central, round rev counter and additional information presented in the form of bars to the left and right of the rev counter: with a three-dimensional perspective, they reach far into the background to an artificial horizon.

Via the AMG menu the driver can call up various special displays:

  • Gear display ‑ with yellow “M” symbol in manual mode
  • Warm-Up menu ‑ engine and transmission oil temperature
  • Set-Up menu ‑ AMG DYNAMIC SELECT settings
  • G-Meter – longitudinal and lateral acceleration forces
  • Race-Timer – stopwatch, lap and sector times
  • Engine data – output and torque, engine oil and transmission oil temperature

The touchscreen multimedia display also emphasises the dynamic character with individual AMG displays such as visualisation of the driving programs, AMG TRACK PACE and telemetry data.

And needless to say, the trailblazing voice control activated with the words “Hey Mercedes” is also on-board. Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation, even if they are expressed indirectly.

AMG Performance steering wheel: with optional control buttons

A perfect symbiosis between the driver and vehicle is ensured by the multifunction sport steering wheel in nappa leather with flattened steering wheel rim and perforated grip area, and depending on the upholstery, red, yellow or black topstitching and a facing in silver chrome. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shifting.

The active distance assistant DISTRONIC and the TEMPOMAT cruise control can be adjusted on the control panels on the left. The control panels on the right are used to activate the voice control and telephone, and to regulate the sound volume, music selection and other functions of the infotainment system.

As standard the S-models are equipped with the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre (optional for basic model).

The AMG steering wheel buttons (standard for S-models, optional for the basic variants in conjunction with the Performance steering wheel) allow the AMG driving modes to be accessed directly, and other AMG functions to be conveniently operated directly at the steering wheel.

Individual optional equipment: even more intensive driver involvement

Numerous options are available to suit the new 45 models to individual customer wishes. They include the following

  • Leather package and AMG leather package with 2-tone upholstery, for example classic red / black, plus instrument panel in ARTICO man-made leather
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather / DINAMICA microfibre (standard for S-models)
  • AMG Performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre incl. AMG steering wheel buttons
  • Door sills in brushed stainless steel with “AMG” lettering, illuminated
  • AMG Performance Seat Package
  • AMG Performance Seat package Advanced
  • AMG Performance Seat package High-End
  • AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for the basic variants, with AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, larger AMG high-performance braking system with red-painted 6-piston fixed callipers and 360 x 36 mm brake discs at the front, AMG steering wheel buttons, “RACE” driving mode and Drift mode

AMG TRACK PACE: Data logger for use on the race track

AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual race engineer, is standard equipment for the S-models, and otherwise optionally available in conjunction with HDD navigation and the media display: The software is part of the MBUX infotainment system, and when negotiating a race circuit it continuously monitors more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration). On top of this, lap and sector times are displayed, as well as the respective difference from a reference time. Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether they are currently faster or slower than the best time.

After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyse and, if necessary, improve their driving skills. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved. Thanks to a newly developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or it has been shortened. This is done using GPS data as well as the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds).

The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display. Well-known race tracks like, for example, the Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps, are already stored. Furthermore, it is also possible to record your own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online.

The MBUX Augmented Reality function also allows the ideal line of a stored race track to be displayed on the multimedia display or optional head-up display, allowing the driver to improve lap times with a virtual instructor on board.

The World Premiere of the C 63 AMG Happened 25 years ago

25 years ago Mercedes-Benz unveiled the C 36 AMG as the top model of the new C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG was premiered at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main (IAA) from 9 to 19 September 1993. The debut 25 years ago was the first highlight in a unique success story. For this high-performance saloon from model series 202 was the first joint project to be created by Mercedes-Benz together with the engineering company AMG founded in 1967. The Mercedes-AMG model range, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG since 2005, is now more comprehensive than ever before.

This power package for the C-Class is a clear statement on automotive sportiness spanning the entire product range: 25 years ago Mercedes-Benz unveiled the C 36 AMG as the top model of the new C-Class in model series 202 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main (IAA, 9 to 19 September 1993). By 1997, 5,221 units of the 206 kW (280 hp) high-performance saloon had been built in total. That is ten times more than the exclusive 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II of model series 201 from 1990 with similar performance data.

The Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG delighted the experts and fans alike in 1993. This is also thanks to a history of passion for the Mercedes star dating back to the 1960s: in 1967 Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded their engineering firm for design and testing in the development of racing engines. In their free time, the two Mercedes-Benz employees had already built up racing cars on the basis of series-production cars with the star. The sporty optimisation of customer vehicles for the road now became a second career.

The letters AMG in the company name stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and for the place where Aufrecht lived, Großaspach. The two companies came ever closer via touring car racing, where Mercedes-Benz and AMG cooperate very successfully, in particular in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Then from 1990 they also cooperated on the development of sporty high-performance models for Mercedes-Benz series production. Twenty-five years ago the C 36 AMG was the first result of this fruitful collaboration. In that same year there followed the performance-enhanced variants of the E-Class Saloon (W 124) and the SL (R 129), which were offered with a 280 kW (381 hp) 6.0 l, V8 engine as the E 60 AMG and SL 60 AMG.

The basis for the C 36 AMG was formed by the Mercedes-Benz C 280, which was extensively revised in terms of engine and chassis. Instead of the C 280’s 2.8-litre variant of the six-cylinder in-line engine M 104, its 3.2-litre version was used, and was also to be found at this time in models such as the E 320 (model series 124). In order to increase the cylinder capacity to 3,606 cubic centimetres, the AMG engineers upped the bore from 89.9 to 91 millimetres and the stroke from 84 to 92.4 millimetres.

The crankshaft of the Mercedes-Benz 3.5-litre diesel engine OM 605 D 35 A, whose counterweights were turned and shaft rebalanced, ensured the very long stroke. During optimisation, the developers systematically used components from the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range: the brakes on the front axle of the C 36 AMG originated from the Mercedes-Benz SL 600 of model series R 129, those on the rear axle from the E 420 of model series 124.

Many further refinements contributed to the successful overall concept of the C 36 AMG. On the engine these include the special custom-made pistons as well as the reconfiguration of the crankshaft’s torsional damper, lowering of the oil deflector by two millimetres, modification of the oil spray nozzles, a larger stroke and the modified valve timings of the intake camshafts, plus extended exhaust ports and an air intake pipe with a considerably larger cross-section between the air filter box and intake manifold. The engine management was also adapted to the changed parameters. All these modifications added up to an increase in the output of the 3.6-litre engine in the C 36 AMG compared with the 2.8-litre series engine by 64 kW (87 hp) to 206 kW (280 hp) at 5,750 rpm. The torque achieves 385 Nm at 4,000 to 4,750 rpm.

All in all, the C 36 AMG delights everyone with its superior poise. This is also thanks to the suspension tuning, which finds a successful compromise between firm sports car suspension and the more comfortable damper configuration of a refined saloon. And the four-speed automatic transmission also impresses – as testified by the specialist magazine “Auto Motor und Sport” in its 20/1994 issue: “It shifts quickly and unobtrusively, immediately reacts to kickdown and thanks to the selector lever surround it boasts effortless manual gear changes. On winding routes not only can this enhance the joy of driving; it can also increase the harmony of motion”. Equipping the high-performance saloon with traction control system (TCS) also made exploiting the engine output an acceptable pleasure with no regrets.

Twenty-five years ago the C 36 AMG was in the initial stage of direct cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and AMG – an outstanding success story. In 1999 the Stuttgart group took over a majority stake in AMG, and since 2005 Mercedes-AMG GmbH has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. Today the passion for performance with sporty top models characterises virtually all segments of the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range with more than 50 different models. Since 2009 the performance brand has also been demonstrating the high level of development expertise with sports cars developed completely autonomously, such as the SLS AMG and the Mercedes-AMG GT.

The powerful C from AMG in model series 202 of 1993 sounded the starting signal for this development. The flagship C-Class was an instant success and became the first high-volume production model in the history of Mercedes-AMG: by March 1997, the 5,000th vehicle had been delivered. Six months later in the autumn of 1997, when more than 5,200 vehicles had been produced, the C 36 AMG was superseded by the Mercedes-Benz C 43 AMG – the first C-Class with a V8 engine. In June 1996 the C 36 AMG started a tradition that continues to this day when the Affalterbach-based brand provided the official safety car in Formula 1 for the first time.

The campaign for the new Mercedes-AMG 53 series models

#SpeedUpInStyle: Performance and Personality

Mercedes-AMG is supporting the sales release of the new members of the family Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé, Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Cabriolet and Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ (Combined fuel consumption: 8.9-8.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined respectively: 204-203 g/km) on 28 May 2018 with a social media campaign. The new Mercedes-AMG models are being presented for lifestyle-oriented individualists according to the motto “#SpeedUpInStyle”. An urban lifestyle defines the style of the digital presentation at the start of sales. The digital presentation focuses on the lifeworlds of design and architecture. The #SpeedUpInStyle campaign is divided into two phases: during the first phase, traditional product communications dominates. The second phase makes full use of digital media with social media posts and films on the Mercedes-AMG channels. The focus is on Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen, who drives around New York in the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé. The first social media film can be viewed as of now on https://youtu.be/x85lyF6P6vc.

“The 53 series models expands our portfolio with a trendsetting combination of sporty design, performance and efficiency. We are thus offering a lifestyle-oriented customer group a new, attractive offer from Affalterbach. A trusting partnership has linked us with IWC Schaffhausen for more than ten years. That’s why we are especially pleased to have Christoph Grainger-Herr take part in our campaign. He ideally embodies the lifestyle of the 53 series models and is thus the perfect protagonist for us”, states Eva Wiese, Head of Marketing and Product Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The campaign film picks up on images from the realm of architecture and design that influence life in the city. Christoph Grainger-Herr represents the city dwellers and is part of an urban culture with a certain attitude towards life. All major cities are always on the move and constantly changing. With the new 53 series models, drivers dynamically adapt to any situation.

With their unique combination of sporty design, performance and efficiency, the new 53 series models from Mercedes-AMG are taking the first step towards the brand’s hybrid future. The social media campaign picks up on this with the motto “#SpeedUpInStyle”. The cineastic film shows Christoph Grainger-Herr’s fast-paced life. Visually, the campaign motto is realised with a supercut and striking sound design that evokes associations with Hollywood productions.

The CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, Christoph Grainger-Herr, is an interior architect and designer as well as a “performance enthusiast”. The film for the social media campaign accompanies him during a business trip around the metropolis of New York. The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé is always at his side, aiming to portray his daily life as authentically as possible. Even though as CEO he is constantly on the road going from appointment to appointment, he uses the freedom and drives himself.

“As a perfectionist, I find the new Mercedes-AMG 53 series models fascinating because of the exceptional combination of craftsmanship, performance and innovation. This is what connects the IWC Schaffhausen watches with the vehicles from Mercedes-AMG”, Christoph Grainger-Herr says.

The film will be accompanied by an interview in the Mercedes me magazine and by social media postings on the technical features of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Coupé. Highlighted features include the EQ boost starter-alternator, which combines starter and alternator in one efficient electric motor, as well as the fully digital widescreen cockpit which adapts to driver’s wishes.

The idea, conception and implementation of the campaign stem from two agencies. The Staud Studios in Leonberg are responsible for producing the images in phase one. The K‑MB agency for brand communications in Berlin created the social media content for phase two.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster

In time for the spring, Mercedes-AMG is extending its sports car portfolio with the new AMG GT S Roadster

In time for the spring, Mercedes-AMG is extending its sports car portfolio with the new AMG GT S Roadster (combined fuel consumption: 11.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 262 g/km)1as an attractive open-air model. With this latest addition the AMG GT family now has a dozen members: four two-door Coupés, three Roadsters, two customer sports racing cars and three four-door Coupés. The basis for the high Driving Performance of the new AMG GT S Roadster is the combination of a lightweight aluminium spaceframe, a V8 biturbo engine, a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, a rear axle locking differential and a sport suspension with aluminium double wishbone axles.

“With the AMG GT S Roadster, our AMG GT family has gained another exceptionally sporty member that combines high driving dynamics with an emotional open-air experience,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The new model represents the perfect alternative for the performance-oriented AMG GT Roadster customer.”

Compared to the AMG GT Roadster, the AMG GT S Roadster is rendered even more dynamic by numerous modifications to the engine, suspension, brakes, design and interior. This positions it between the AMG GT Roadster and the even more powerful AMG GT C Roadster, now providing a choice of three open-top two-seaters.

Muscular power unit for a top speed of over 300 km/h

The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo in the AMG GT S Roadster delivers an output of 384 kW (522 hp) and maximum torque of 670 Nm. This is available over a wide engine speed range from 1900 to 5000 rpm. The eight-cylinder power unit delivers muscular performance in all engine speed ranges, combined with high efficiency for low fuel consumption and emission levels. A sprint from standstill to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.8 seconds. The dynamic power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 308 km/h.

The two turbochargers of the V8 are not positioned on the outside of the cylinder banks, but inside the cylinder “V”. Advantages: a compact engine design, spontaneous response of the turbochargers and low exhaust emissions thanks to optimal airflow to the near-engine catalysts. The dry sump lubrication also ensures the oil supply even with high lateral forces and allows the engine to be installed lower, thus moving the centre of gravity closer to the road and forming the basis for high lateral acceleration.

Power transfer is based on the combination of a front mid-engine and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G sport transmission in a transaxle arrangement, combined with a torsionally rigid torque tube. Thanks to the wide gear ratio spread, the decidedly high torque of the V8 biturbo engine can be used to optimum effect. The weight distribution is also ideal for optimum driving dynamics at 47 (front) and 53 (rear) percent.

Fast-responding transmission: The S 63 4MATIC+ Coupé and Cabriolet are equipped with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission, which convinces with extremely short shift times and lightning reactions to shift paddle commands. The wet start-off clutch saves weight and improves responsiveness to accelerator movements. It also makes the RACE START function possible.

Fully variable all-wheel drive: with fully variable torque distribution, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ ensures optimum traction in all driving conditions. This fully variable all-wheel drive offers more Driving Performance on both dry and wet surfaces, and even more safety on snow and ice.

AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive adjustable damping: Customers can preset the damping to “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus” ‑ from relaxed long-distance comfort to dynamic sportiness.

Panamericana grille and front apron with new Jet Wing: The new AMG S‑Class Coupés and Cabriolets have the characteristic AMG Panamericana grille: Chromed, vertical struts subdivide the cooling air intake, whose V‑shaped contour follows the lines of the headlamp housings. The front apron resembles a hovering jet wing and is painted in the vehicle colour. It is flanked by two large outer air inlets, which are outlined in high-gloss black.

Distinctive interior: The AMG sport seats give the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Nappa leather and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exclusive atmosphere on board. The Performance steering wheel with a flattened lower section features shift paddles and a more heavily contoured rim with perforated leather in the grip area.

Highlights: Mercedes-AMG S 65 Coupé and Cabriolet

Key facts

Visual update: The top-of-the-range twelve-cylinder models, the S 65 Coupé and S 65 Cabriolet (fuel consumption combined: 11.9 and 12.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 279 and 272 g/km) are receiving a visual update with the AMG Panamericana grille.

Drive system: The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine develops 463 kW (630 hp) and delivers a maximum torque of electronically limited 1000 newton metres. It therefore represents the spearhead of the Mercedes-AMG S-Class range.

Predictive suspension: The exclusive AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension of the S 65 Coupé uses a stereo camera to register the nature of the road surface ahead, and adjusts the damping at each wheel to the predicted bumps. To do so, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL combines active suspension springing with continuously adjustable damping.

Curve tilting function: The standard curve-inclination function causes the body of the vehicle to tilt to the inside of a turn by up to 2.65 degrees when in driving mode “Curve”. This significantly reduces the perceived lateral forces and enhances ride comfort, particularly on secondary roads. The driving characteristics can be modified in numerous ways by five driving modes – from Comfort to Sport, Sport+ and Curve to Individual.

The Meaning Behind the AMG Logo and a New Way to Display It

The AMG emblem shows the cornerstones of the high performance brand, Mercedes-AMG

The AMG emblem shows the cornerstones of the high performance brand, Mercedes-AMG: an apple tree on the river symbolizes the location in Affalterbach, Germany. The cam, valve and valve spring symbolizes the engine manufacturing. With the new AMG emblem projector, the emblem can now be projected into the entrance area next to the vehicle in a high-tech 3D look. Thus, making the ingress into a Mercedes-AMG an impressive experience.

AMG Emblem

LED Projektor, AMG Wappen
LED Projector, AMG Emblem

After the success of the illuminated Mercedes star in the grill, the Mercedes-Benz original-parts program now offers an additional customization option based on modern LED technology: LED Projector AMG Emblem. When opening the driver’s and passenger doors, the AMG emblem is projected into the entry area in 3D with the help of the entrance lighting mechanism at the bottom of the door. The LED Projector AMG Emblem is now available at Mercedes-Benz sales partners for numerous vehicle models from A-Class to GLS.

Mercedes-Benz partners can assemble the AMG emblem LED projector in just a matter of minutes: just simply replace the factory-installed entrance lighting at the bottom of the front doors. The new projector uses state-of-the-art LED technology, consumes little power and has a long service life. Moreover, it fulfils the high quality requirements that Mercedes-Benz places on all its original parts and accessories. This new individualization option is available from the A-Class to the GLS in combination with the corresponding door lighting packages. The AMG emblem LED projector is not only for Mercedes-AMG enthusiasts, but there is an LED projector for Mercedes-Benz drivers as well. In this case, the Mercedes star, possibly the world’s best-known trademark, is projected into the entry area when the front doors are open.

The Illuminated Mercedes Star available for many lines from the original-parts program is also a real eye-catcher. The outline of the Mercedes star centred in the radiator grille illuminates by means of the light conductors as well as LED technology, and thus adds a special look to many Mercedes-Benz models.

Celebrating 50 years of Mercedes-AMG Success

The company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in 1967 is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017

AMG – these three letters stand worldwide for supreme automotive performance, exclusivity, efficiency and high driving dynamics. The company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in 1967 is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017. In the course of this half century, Mercedes-AMG has further consolidated its position as an extremely successful sports car and performance brand with numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road-going vehicles. Today, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, the Affalterbach-based company represents the sporting spearhead of the Group. For each of the now around 1600 employees, the focus will be on the brand promise of “Driving Performance”, which unites the core strengths of AMG: cutting-edge technology and a passion for dynamic, emotionally appealing products. The basis for this is the phenomenal engine technology of Mercedes-AMG. And the company from Affalterbach has lastingly underpinned its high development capabilities with the two in-house designed sports cars, the SLS AMG and the AMG GT (Fuel consumption, combined: 11.4 – 9.3 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 259 – 216 g/km). AMG started into the anniversary year with record figures under its belt, delivering almost 100,000 vehicles in 2016 and thus growing by more than 40 percent while being in the middle of the biggest strategic model initiative in the company’s history.

The strong first quarter of 2017 suggests that the barrier of 100,000 units will fall in the anniversary year. This dynamic growth was made possible by continuous further development of the performance models, which are in greater demand than ever. However, the strategic broadening of the portfolio in past years has also resulted in the successful development of new groups of customers. Today, sports car enthusiasts can choose from a large selection of the AMG GT family. Another factor is the worldwide success of the popular eight-cylinder models in the 63 series, and the 45 series models in the compact segment. Because the 43 series models launched on a broad front captivate very many customers and put the modern product range of Mercedes-AMG on a broad, sound basis. The biggest sales markets were again the USA, Germany and China.

“Our strategic expansion of the product range has put us on course for success around the world. With more than 400 Performance Centres, we have also continued our expansion at the point of sales. The 63 series models still constitute our core model series, and delight car enthusiasts around the world. In addition, our sports car series, which was developed entirely in-house, is now available as a broad-based family, to which we will add a four-door variant next year, once more demonstrating our competence as a sports car brand. We will further expand our broad product range with a new product line in the compact segment. In this way we have set the course for continued sustainable growth. It is up to us to not only celebrate the success story of Mercedes-AMG now, but to help shape the performance of the future during one of the most exciting periods of automotive history,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Development of new categories of customers through portfolio expansion

2016 saw the biggest strategic model initiative in the history of Mercedes-AMG: with over ten new models being added to the product portfolio, from January 2017 performance-minded customers are able to choose from over 50 models. In each category, Mercedes-AMG boasts a comprehensive and impressive selection: from the most powerful production four-cylinder engine in the compact segment to sporty elegant models with a superior twelve-cylinder engine, from saloons and estates in a wide variety of output classes to a broad range of SUVs and coupés, to cabriolets and different types of roadsters. The available technology is among the best on offer in the respective vehicle categories, ranging from optimised rear-wheel drive to state-of-the-art all-wheel drive, as well as from a dual-clutch transmission to a sporty nine-gear automatic transmission.

At the same time, the sports car and performance brand has won entirely new groups of customers with its recently launched 43 series models. The 43 series models come with a powerful and efficient six-cylinder engine. Other hallmarks of the 43 series derivatives include a special transmission configuration with shorter shift times as well as discrete axle designs and suspensions, powerful brake components and other visual interior/exterior distinguishing features, confirming the models as typical AMG vehicles that fully deliver on the brand claim of “Driving Performance” while authentically representing the brand in the respective segments.

New target groups, younger buyers: the AMG compact cars

The entry of Mercedes-AMG into the compact class – and therefore a completely new market segment – in 2013 was another important milestone: the compact 45 series models immediately impressed with their sporty driving experience and the emotionally appealing design. Accordingly they also attracted new customers to the performance and sports car brand. Featuring the world’s most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine and the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the compact sports models clearly stand for hallmark AMG Driving Performance. Due to the strong demand, it is only logical to offer the customers in future an even broader selection in this segment as well.

The four-cylinder models not only lead their market segment in terms of performance and driving fun, they have reach the youngest ever AMG clientèle: the most represented age group here is 35 to 45 years. Many buyers purchase their first Mercedes-AMG in the form of one of the compact models.

Sports car family is growing gradually

In less than three years, the second sports car series developed completely in‑house has become a family of seven which includes coupés and roadsters. With the Mercedes-AMG GT model series, the Affalterbach-based company is once again underlining its positioning as a sports car brand. The front mid-engine concept with transaxle and the intelligent aluminium lightweight construction form the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience. With the AMG GT R and the two open-top variants, the AMG GT Roadster and the AMG GT C Roadster, the sports car family has been enhanced with fascinating models. The decision in favour of further expansion has already been made: the AMG GT Concept, which celebrated its première in Geneva, gives an initial look ahead.

Competence centre for V8 development

For some time now, Mercedes-AMG has been responsible not only for the development of the AMG V8 engines, but also for the new eight-cylinder family of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The first production vehicle to be fitted with a V8 engine developed in Affalterbach was the G 500 (Fuel consumption, combined: 12.3 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km), which celebrated its market launch in September 2015. The V8 engine for the upcoming new S-Class (Fuel consumption, combined: 8.5 l/100 km; Combined CO2 emissions: 195 g/km) was also developed in Affalterbach, underlining the engine-building expertise of the three-lettered brand.

Mercedes-AMG and the Nürburgring: a strong partnership

Nowhere else in the world can a car be more effectively tested than on the demanding Nordschleife circuit of the Nürburgring racetrack. The stress profile of the 20.8-kilometre track reflects every possible driving state – and under extreme conditions. The development engineers of Mercedes-AMG spend about 17 weeks each year in the Eifel. And that is bound to increase in future, because the development site at the Nürburgring is being expanded further. Furthermore, Mercedes-AMG has entered into a cooperation with Nürburgring and will support the Nürburgring Driving Academy with vehicles from Affalterbach, for example.

Outstanding Customer Sports season 2016

With a total of 18 overall victories and 32 other podium finishes, the international customer and performance teams celebrated a sensational season in 2016 with the new Mercedes-AMG GT3. The GT3 racing car got the season off to the ideal start. In the 24‑hour race on the Nürburgring at the end of May the GT3 racing car drove home the biggest success thus far since the AMG Customer Sports programme was founded: with overall victory, pole position, fastest lap as well as further second, third, fourth and sixth placings now on record in the annals of motorsport. The brand’s clean sweep of the podium places in the world’s biggest car race was shared by the AMG team BLACK FALCON (P1), the AMG team HTP Motorsport (P2) and the HARIBO Racing Team-AMG (P3).

Also in the customer sports programme, Mercedes-AMG will keep its foot on the gas in the coming season, with participation of the successful AMG GT3 being extended to the USA. Renowned teams will contest both the highly popular IMSA Series as well as the PWC, the Pirelli World Challenge. The teams will also benefit from optimal support from Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing in the USA.

First-class customer support at AMG Performance Centers

As part of the strategic broadening of the portfolio to over 50 models, the number of AMG Performance Centres has also undergone huge expansion. At over 400 Performance Centres in 40 countries, customers and fans can immerse themselves in the brand world of Mercedes-AMG. These are places where the history of the brand and its DNA can be experienced first-hand. As appropriate for the wide product range, trained and qualified AMG sales and service experts provide knowledgeable advice and support to customers worldwide.

The next stage in the development of the AMG Performance Centres will see the opening of further AMG sales and service outlets with a distinct architecture in Japan, Australia and the Middle East. Complementing the existing global sales network, the independent location, which opened in Tokyo Setagaya in January 2017, spearheads the dealer network and defines the next step in the sales initiative. On a total area of almost 1000 square metres, customers can learn about the latest AMG Performance models and their technological features, the AMG Driving Academy, the AMG Collection and the involvement of AMG in motorsport.

Exclusive AMG Private Lounge

Another central component of customer support is the online AMG Private Lounge. The online platform invites AMG owners to share their passion for the brand with other AMG enthusiasts. At present, the AMG Private Lounge Community has more than 55,000 accredited members worldwide. Insider knowledge, direct contact with Affalterbach, exclusive events and opportunities to communicate and exchange ideas give the brand a more approachable face. No other car manufacturer offers anything comparable.

Pit radio for AMG customers

To ensure a high quality of customer support, customers have access to an exclusive AMG hotline, launched in October 2016. The primary aim of the “pit radio” is to restore performance when needed – in the event of an accident, for example. The service hotline can also help if the customer has any technical questions or wants to make a workshop appointment. A defined process guarantees customers the quickest possible assistance. The hotline is initially available to customers in Germany, Great Britain, France, Austria and Switzerland, with further markets and a broadening of the offering to follow.

Milestones in the history of the sports car and performance brand

The company founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher has been fulfilling the dreams of performance enthusiasts for 50 years. The pair set up their first workshop in an old mill in 1967 as an “engineering office and design and testing centre for the development of racing engines”. In 1971, the AMG 300 SEL 6.8 of “Aufrecht and Melcher, Großaspach” – in short: AMG – claimed victory completely out of the blue in its class and took second place overall in the 24-hour race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Another milestone was the all-new cylinder head with cutting-edge valve technology, developed by Melcher.

Collaboration with Mercedes-Benz began in 1990. The C 36 AMG, launched in 1993, was the first vehicle on the market to result from the collaboration agreement with Daimler-Benz. In 2005, Mercedes-AMG became a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG and 2009 saw the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the first vehicle to be developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG. AMG branched into motor racing with the SLS AMG GT3 in 2011. This was followed by the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT in 2014 and the launch of the 43 series models in 2015, introducing a broader target group to the brand.

At first glance the Edition 50 can be recognised by the two special paint finishes in designo graphite grey magno or designo cashmere white magno. Black chrome accents deliver a unique look. They are applied to the side skirt trim, the front splitter, the trim strips in the air intakes of the Panamericana grille, the fins on the side air outlets in the front wings, the trim on the rear diffuser and the exhaust tailpipe trim elements. The surface of the cross-spoke AMG forged wheels has been harmonised with the black chrome elements of the exterior.

The interior is marked by a contrast between black and silver. This colour scheme is followed not only by the trim in STYLE Exclusive nappa leather in silver pearl/black with grey diamond-patterned contrasting topstitching, but also by the black AMG Performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre with grey contrasting topstitching, 12 o’clock mark in silver pearl, “Edition 50” lettering plus a note on the limitation.

To emphasise the sporty character, the Edition comes as standard with the AMG Interior Night package, which includes steering wheel spokes, shift paddles and door sill panels in black. The interplay between light and dark is further accentuated by silver seat belts and black chrome trim. The head restraint of the AMG Performance seat is embossed with “GT Edition 50”.

Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet Ocean Blue Edition

The Ocean Blue Edition for the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Cabriolet and C 63 S Cabriolet is designed for a particularly design-oriented and fashion-conscious target group and limited to 150 units worldwide. The new colour deep ocean blue for the fabric acoustic soft top is exclusively earmarked for this new Edition. The exclusive colour shade is featured on numerous further details on the car, such as the trim strips on the front and rear apron, the surrounds on the hub caps, the contrasting topstitching in the crystal grey interior plus the analogue clock in an IWC design.

The paint finishes designo cashmere white magno and designo selenite grey magno are available for the exterior. The front apron in an A‑wing design, the exterior mirror housings, the side sill panels plus the spoiler lip are painted in the vehicle colour, underlining the elegant character of the Edition. The AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design in size 19 inches at the front/20 inches at the rear are painted in titanium grey.

In the interior, the light, crystal grey interior in nappa leather with lavish diamond quilting and deep ocean blue contrasting topstitching immediately catches the eye. It is combined with trim in matt silver glass fibre (high-gloss carbon fibre as a no-cost option) with the Edition badge in the centre console. The fine impression is reinforced by the steering wheel with its black rim, featuring a flattened bottom section, in nappa leather and silver-coloured buttons: it comes from the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet.

As standard the seats are fitted with the AIRSCARF neck-level heating and climatised seats, ensuring optimum comfort in all weather conditions. Attention to detail is evident in the AMG badges in the backrests of the front seats and the embossed AMG emblems in the front head restraints.

Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé and Cabriolet Night Edition

On the Night Edition for the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé and Cabriolet black details add fine flourishes. So for the first time the cabriolet too is available with black exterior details. The diamond radiator grille sports black dots. The trim strips on the front splitter, on the rear apron and the side skirts are also painted in black. The same applies to the spoiler lip on the boot lid and the tailpipe trim elements on the exhaust system.

The overall impression is influenced by the 19-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, which are painted in matt black for the first time and feature high-sheen rim flanges as a contrast.

The Edition theme continues in the interior. The rim of the Performance steering wheel, in nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre, with its flattened bottom section is also in black, and a badge on the centre console flags up the Night Edition.

The new softshell men’s functional jacket is a sporty, dynamic hybrid jacket that provides effective protection against the wind. The jacket has a slightly tapered slim-fit cut (sizes: S – XXL) and features a waterproof zip. It has a high-closing collar with chin protector and a detachable hood. Further functional features include two side pockets with zip, various inside pockets, width-adjustable cuffs with Velcro fastenings as well as a cord and stopper to adjust the width. The base colour of the jacket is timeless selenite grey, highlighted with contrasting black, white and red as well as a white AMG logo printed on the breast. It fits well with the new men’s cap made of Tactel – 83% nylon, 14% cotton and 3% elastane.

The versatile men’s sweat jacket in selenite grey with yellow highlights available in S to XXL is understated yet sporty. Designed with a tapered slim-fit cut, the jacket is made of 73% cotton / 27% polyester. The zip in contrasting solarbeam yellow closes the jacket securely, while two pockets provide a secure space to keep small essentials. The jacket is completed perfectly by a drawstring hood, matt black eyelets and a two-tone cord plus black ribbed cuffs and hem. Visual highlights are the black 3D-embroidered logo on the left breast, the 3D-embroidered “GT” on the sleeve and the yellow collar with woven AMG logo. Likewise new to the collection are two men’s polo shirts: a long-sleeved shirt in base colour black with white and red highlights, and a short-sleeved shirt in white with black highlights. Made of 100% cotton, they are available in sizes S – XXL.

Stylish personal accessories

There are not one but two new smartphone covers available to protect the iPhone® 6/6S. The black plastic cover with the embossed AMG GT silhouette and the AMG logo reliably protects the smartphone from shocks, scratches and dirt. The cover has holes and recesses for all the connections and control buttons. It’s therefore easy to switch the phone on and off, control the volume or charge the battery even when the cover is on.

The smartphone cover in genuine lamb’s leather is particularly refined. Based on the design of the AMG seats, the black cover features an on-trend perforated look. The leather-trimmed click-in holder makes it easy to insert and remove the mobile phone. Various compartments available for cards and notes round-off the impressive features of this handmade cover. The new wallet, likewise in high-quality perforated lamb’s leather, has a matching design. Red contrasting topstitching and an embossed AMG logo add attractive highlights and round off the harmonious design. Inside there are two note compartments, four credit card slots, three larger compartments for a vehicle document, ID card, etc. and a coin compartment with press-stud fastening.

There’s plenty of space for larger items and business documents in the new, black business bag made of perforated leather. With its red contrasting topstitching, it not only scores highly in terms of first-class design, it’s equally impressive when it comes to practicality and comfort. The bag features a large zipped main compartment and various inner compartments. There is also a padded laptop compartment for devices up to 38.1 cm (15 inches) plus a large compartment with a magnetic fastener. The leather loop on the back which can be used for hanging the bag over the towbar of a trolley suitcase and the padded, length-adjustable shoulder strap round-off the features of this business bag.

One of the particularly stylish personal accessories new to the portfolio is the 16 GB USB stick 2.0 in the shape of the Mercedes-AMG GT in solarbeam yellow. Those who prefer to build their own solarbeam yellow AMG GT, ideally together with the kids, should look no further than the new 200-piece jigsaw puzzle. Comprising 120 g/m2 linen-embossed photo paper on 1.9 mm blue jigsaw card and a four-colour print with varnish, the completed puzzle measures 470 x 330 mm.

The New Mercedes C 43 4MATIC Coupé

Mercedes-AMG has added another sporty model to its C-Class family: the new C 43 4MATIC Coupé

Mercedes-AMG Press Release: Mercedes-AMG has added another sporty model to its C-Class family: the new C 43 4MATIC Coupé. For the highly dynamic driving experience that is the hallmark of the brand the Affalterbach-based development teams have put together a scintillating engineering package: the 270 kW (367 hp) 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is combined with the new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission that provides agile gearshifts. Together with the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the model-specific chassis technology, this provides the optimum basis for high agility and exhilarating lateral dynamics. Thus the new C 43 4MATIC Coupé also fulfils the brand promise of ‘Driving Performance’ in every respect.

Dynamic growth characterises the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMG. A key component is the continual extension of the product range to include all-new models, which were hitherto not part of the portfolio. “The extension of the C-Class family to include the new C 43 4MATIC Coupé is another component in our growth strategy. It not only enriches the wide line-up of the C-Class family, but also starts the introduction of a whole series of new ’43’ models this year”, says Mercedes‑AMG GmbH chairman Tobias Moers. “The ’43’ models boast the characteristic AMG genes, which are also included in our GT and ’63’ vehicles, and thus consistently interpret our brand essence of ‘Driving Performance’ in their segment”. Sports car technology and motor racing flair thus become more attainable and appeal to a broader customer base.

The 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine provides impressive performance with its 270 kW (367 hp) maximum power and peak torque of 520 newton metres: sprinting from rest to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, its speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h. The newly developed front axle, the taut elastokinematics and the highly precise steering make a substantial contribution to the agile driving experience.

AMG-specific: the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine

The new 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is part of the BlueDIRECT engine family from Mercedes-Benz. Technical advances including a modified boost pressure allowed the AMG engineers to increase the engine’s power output and torque as well as its dynamism and flexibility to typical AMG levels. With 270 kW (367 hp) and 520 Nm, the V6 engine sets new standards in its segment. The NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder liners is also used in the Formula One engines of MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS. Especially tough and, therefore, wear-resistant, this coating also reduces friction, thereby contributing to higher efficiency. The AMG powerplant can be identified by the red aluminium insert in the engine cover.

Short shift times, high efficiency: 9G-TRONIC

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is especially matched to the demands of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC. Thanks to the model-specific software application, the AMG developers managed to reduce substantially the shift times of the 9-speed transmission. The multiple downshift allows even faster short bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” transmission modes makes for an even more emotive driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gearshifts in the “Eco” and “Comfort” modes.

“Manual” mode can be enabled by pressing a button on the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected transmission mode, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

With automatic variable damping: the sports suspension

The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé offers the optimum conditions for high driving dynamics and outstanding comfort on long journeys thanks to the standard-fit AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension. The four-link front axle is fitted with special steering knuckles and load-bearing joints; all components have been optimised in terms of rigidity.

A more negative camber on the front axle and on the multi-link rear axle enhances lateral dynamics. The elastokinematics of both axles have been designed to be more rigid in general. All these measures improve agility, and boost the dynamics. In addition, the driver benefits from reduced body roll, higher lateral acceleration, better traction, and strong neutral handling at the limit.

The driver can select the automatic adjustable damping system’s three suspension modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus” using a button on the centre console to fully customise the driving impression.

Characteristics at the tap of a finger: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

With the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual”, the driver can tailor the characteristics of the C 43 4MATIC Coupé to individual preferences at the tap of a finger. The available range extends from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. This modifies key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension set-up and steering.

The “Sport Plus” mode in particular delivers impressive hallmark AMG dynamics and enhances the emotional appeal: partial cylinder suppression during gear changes by means of a momentary and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under full throttle allows for even faster gear changes, and is also audible to the driver. This is perfectly complemented by the emotive double-declutching function when downshifting.

In order to increase efficiency, the ECO start/stop function and the ‘sailing’ function reduce fuel consumption in “Eco” mode: when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range between 60 and 160 km/h, the clutch is disengaged and the engine is decoupled from the powertrain. The electronics reduce the engine speed to idle level, and the driving resistance is reduced by the compression and frictional forces of the engine in overrun mode.

Direct and with clear feedback: speed-sensitive sports steering

The speed-sensitive sports steering assists the agile cornering of the new C 43 4MATIC Coupé with its variable ratio. It stands out with its precise, highly authentic feedback. The servo assistance can be varied in the “Comfort” or “Sport” setting. The relevant characteristics are automatically activated depending on the selected DYNAMIC SELECT transmission mode or can be personalised in “Individual” mode.

Muscular with an emphasis on width: the exterior design

The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé is likewise sporty in appearance, making it instantly recognisable as a member of the AMG family. Characteristic features include the distinctive AMG styling as well as the specific light-alloy wheels. They underscore the brand’s progressive nature and performance. The engine cover with red aluminium insert accentuates the strengths of the new twin-turbo six-cylinder engine.

The AMG styling includes the front apron with sporty distinctive air intakes, diamond meshes, silver chrome trim, as well as the rear apron with matt iridium silver diffuser insert. The diamond radiator grille features chrome-plated pins, a louvre in high-gloss black and the AMG lettering. Down below, the silver chrome front splitter ensures an optimal flow of air to the cooling modules.

Additional highlights include the black exterior mirror housings, the high-gloss black waistline trim strip and window frame, as well as the two chrome-plated tailpipes with centre divider. Further striking features come courtesy of the new “BITURBO – 4MATIC” lettering on the front wings and the “AMG” (left) and “C 43″ (right) lettering on the boot lid.

Customers can choose the complementary optional Night package, which adds heat-insulating dark tinted glass rearward of the B-pillar, high-gloss black front apron trim, a high-gloss black diffuser-look insert at the rear, and two black tailpipes with centre divider.

AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish round off the design visually. Size 225/45 R 18 tyres on 7.5 x 18 light-alloy wheels are fitted at the front, while the rear axle comes with 245/40 R 18 tyres on 8.5 x 18 wheels. 48.3 cm (19”) light-alloy wheels in various designs are optionally available for even greater individualisation.

Sporty look with model-specific details: the interior design

The interior reinforces the consistently dynamic bias with numerous specially designed details. Ideal for a committed driving style, the multifunction sports steering wheel in black leather features a flattened bottom section and red contrasting topstitching, and sits perfectly in the hand.

The driver finds a secure position in the sports seat even driving at speed thanks to the improved lateral support. The ARTICO man-made leather / DINAMICA microfibre upholstery and the instrument panel trimmed with ARTICO create a very sporty ambience. The man-made leather is also used on the upper edges of the body, the armrests, the door centre panels and the centre console. Red contrasting topstitching, designo red safety belts and black floor mats with red edging add attractive highlights. The aluminium trim pieces with light-tone longitudinal grain embedded in the instrument panel and the doors provide effective contrasts.

The AMG instrument cluster delivers all relevant information in a clearly arranged layout optimised for a dynamic driving style. An authentic sports car look and feel is provided by two tube-shaped round dials, 11.4 cm (4.5-inch) multifunction colour display, RACETIMER and 280 km/h scale in chequered-flag design.

Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class range is about to spawn a convertible for the first time, or Cabriolet as the German automaker refers to it

Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class range is about to spawn a convertible for the first time, or Cabriolet as the German automaker refers to it. And along with the regular car, there will be a couple of performance-oriented models developed by Mercedes-AMG.

2017 Mercedes AMG C43 Cabriolet

One of these will be a new C63 Cabriolet. Another will be a tamer version expected to don a “C43” badge and whose full title should be Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet.

You’ll recall that Mercedes-Benz recently introduced a new AMG Sport range to fill the gap between its most potent offerings and those of Mercedes-AMG. Some of the cars that make up the range include the C450 AMG and GLE450 AMG Coupe.

However, we recently learned that going forward these AMG Sport models will be part of the Mercedes-AMG lineup.

And as a reflection of this they will carry the “43” designation. The transition started with the 2017 SLC43 and will soon lead to the launch of a new E43 based on the 2017 E-Class.

As for this C43 Cabriolet, it should feature a similar drivetrain to the one offered in the C450 AMG, which will eventually be rebadged a C43. This means a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 packing 362 horsepower. The 0-60 mph time should take around 5.0 seconds and drive should be to all four wheels.

We know this isn’t an ordinary C-Class Cabriolet because of its more aggressive front bumper, uprated brakes and quad-exhaust tips. You’ll notice that the exhaust tips aren’t square in shape like they are on the top-end Mercedes-AMG models.

Look for the C43 Cabriolet to debut later this year, most likely as a 2017 model. The more potent C63 Cabriolet should arrive around the same time.

Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet

Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet

No other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder models as Mercedes-AMG: The S 65 Saloon, SL 65 Roadster, G 65 off-roader and S 65 Coupé are now joined by the new S 65 Cabriolet as a further high- performance alternative for discerning automobile enthusiasts.

“The customer base for our V12 biturbo engine expects the ultimate in every respect. That is why we are offering a four-seater high-performance convertible with this legendary power unit for the first time. The new S 65 Cabriolet sets benchmarks for all relevant criteria: top performance, a breathtaking driving experience and exquisite appointments,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The peak output of 463 kW (630 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres make for effortlessly superior performance: The Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). The AMG Driver’s package includes an increase in the top speed to 300 km/h (also electronically limited). Yet it is the unrivalled 12-cylinder driving experience that thrills much more than facts and figures: stylish driving comfort and effortless power delivery combine with great refinement and the unmistakable AMG V12 engine sound.

With an NEDC combined fuel consumption of 12.0 litres per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 272 g/km of CO2), the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Coupé is significantly more economical than all of its rivals.

Technical highlights of the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine

  • Biturbocharging
  • Aluminium crankcase
  • Forged crankshaft in high-grade alloy steel
  • Multi-spark ignition with 12 twin-spark ignition units
  • Air-to-water intercooler with low-temperature circuit
  • Alternator management
  • ECO start/stop function

The exclusive carbon-fibre/aluminium engine cover also visually conveys the exceptional strengths of the V12 engine, which will be hand-assembled on the new, additional AMG engine line in Mannheim from 2016. The ultra-modern assembly layout is logistically and ergonomically perfect for the AMG philosophy of “One Man, One Engine”. This means that at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach (production of V8 engines) and in AMG engine production in Kölleda/Thuringia (4‑cylinder engines), each engine is assembled entirely by hand by a single technician in Mannheim. A badge bearing the technician’s signature and attached to the engine is a personal testimony of perfection and quality.

Power transmission with three individual driving modes

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission is responsible for transferring power to the rear axle. This automatic transmission offers a choice of three individual modes, Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). Sport and Manual emphasise the vehicle’s dynamism: the ultimate emotional appeal and tangible sportiness are ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection when shifting up a gear under full load. This shortens shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is activated in transmission mode “C”.

Design features: High-sheen chrome as a distinguishing feature

The Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet also fascinates with its irresistible, timeless design lines. V12-specific features include the numerous design elements in high-sheen chrome at the front, sides and rear, which are particularly effective in conjunction with dark paint finishes. The large central Mercedes star on the front apron, the “twin blade” radiator grille, all of the air intake grilles, the trim strip on the “A-wing”, the side flics (air deflector elements) and the front splitter are in high-sheen chrome. The front splitter reduces lift at the front axle, while the gap above the front splitter ensures an effective flow of air to the separate engine oil cooler behind it.

At the sides, the eye is drawn to the “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the wings and the high-sheen chrome inserts in the side skirts – which harmonise perfectly with the ceramic high-sheen multi-spoke forged wheels. Their large size of 8.5 J x 20 with size 255/40 ZR 20 tyres at the front, and 9.5 J x 20 with tyre size 285/35 ZR 20 at the rear, emphasises the model’s athletic appearance.

In the closed position, the multi-layered acoustic soft top has the design contours of a coupé silhouette. The fabric soft top is available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red. It can be electro-hydraulically opened and closed while on the move, up to a speed of 50 km/h. Opening and closing take around 17 seconds. The soft top is deposited above the automatically extending luggage compartment partition. This avoids the need for any additional closures on the soft top compartment lid, in keeping with the high design quality embodied by the S 65 Cabriolet.

The rear section also sparkles: The AMG sports exhaust system’s two chromed twin tailpipes in V12 design are fully chrome-plated and perfectly integrated into the rear apron. Above the distinctive diffuser insert, painted in high-gloss black, the trim element forms an effective contrast: it echoes the design of the “A-wings” on the front apron and is finished in high-sheen chrome.

Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet

Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet

Bodyshell: lightweight and torsionally rigid

The sculptured outside skin surrounds a highly stable structure which is light in weight yet extremely strong thanks to the intelligent material mix. The bodyshell of the new S 65 Cabriolet achieves the same torsional rigidity level as a coupé. At the same time the outside skin, the front section and the rear section of aluminium, as well as the use of magnesium, reduce the weight of the bodyshell to that of the current S 65 Coupé. The bulkhead behind the rear seats also contributes to this. This serves to rigidify the bodyshell, but also saves weight by carrying the pyrotechnically deployed rollover bars.

Careful attention to detail is also evident in the luggage compartment concept: when the soft top is opened, it folds away into a section of the luggage compartment. The soft top is separated from the remaining luggage compartment space by means of an electrically operated, retractable cover which encloses the soft top. This luggage compartment partition extends automatically when opening of the soft top. This means that the driver no longer needs to stop in order to operate the luggage compartment cover manually. The partition is not activated if the luggage compartment has been so loaded in such a way that there are objects in the area of the partition. When the soft top is closed, the luggage compartment partition can be retracted by pressing a button in the inner panelling of the boot lid, so as to increase the available luggage space. Additional convenience and space benefits include standard-specification electro-hydraulic remote locking for the luggage compartment and a through-loading facility into the interior.

Interior: equipment, quality and ambience of the highest standard

The extraordinarily stylish character of the twelve-cylinder model is also obvious in the interior: The S 65 Cabriolet welcomes its occupants with an incomparably exquisite ambience. The sport seats in designo Exclusive nappa leather are a distinctive highlight with their model-specific diamond-pattern layout. The perforations deliberately avoid the areas where stitching features in the nappa leather. The result is exceptionally neat contrasting seams and an unrivalled impression of quality. Electric adjustment, a memory function and seat climatisation are standard features. More contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed.

The fabric soft top has an interior lining completely in DINAMICA microfibre. High-grade nappa leather lines the window frame including the A-pillars, the roof claddings and the sun visors.

Outstanding climatic comfort with the roof open or closed

Maximum climatic comfort is assured by the automatic wind protection system AIRCAP, the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, the heated armrests, the seat heating also in the rear, and the intelligent climate control. In contrast to conventional systems, the climate is controlled fully automatically. This means that the driver does not need to select a mode for closed or open top, nor is it necessary to save a temperature setting for these driving conditions.

Sport steering wheel in a three-spoke design

A perfect feel for the car’s behaviour is ensured by the 3-spoke sport steering wheel in nappa leather, which has a flattened lower section. It features shift paddles, a distinctly contoured rim trimmed with perforated leather in the grip area, and a metal insert with AMG lettering.

Another typical AMG speciality is the AMG instrument cluster: information on the engine speed, vehicle speed and much more appears on two animated round dials on the 31.2 centimetre, high-resolution colour TFT display. The typography, the needles in red/silver, the speedometer with its 360 km/h scale and the “V12 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter all have a specifically AMG look. When the driver’s door is opened, an AMG start-up screen appears on the right-hand display, while an animated Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet appears in the instrument cluster.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 20 kg

The Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet is equipped with a lithium-ion battery as standard. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kg.

Sport suspension based on AIRMATIC

The sport suspension based on AIRMATIC provides an incomparable driving experience. It has AMG-specific kinematics, considerably tauter elasto-kinematics and new parameterisation of the variable damping adjustment – the driver benefits from more direct responses, and also faster handling responses with a dynamic driving style. The damping characteristics can be preset in two modes: a high level of long-distance comfort or a sporty, stiff setup.

It is perfectly complemented by the electro-mechanical, speed-sensitive sport steering with a constant, direct steering ratio of 13.5:1: this optimises vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. Depending on the suspension setting, the steering characteristics are adapted for more sporty or comfortable response. In either case the driver feels precise feedback from the road surface, and a high level of steering precision.

Ceramic high-sheen forged wheels with fully integrated wheel bolt cover

The exclusive forged wheels of the V12 Cabriolet appeal with their exceptional design, which represents a contemporary interpretation of classic sports car rims: each of the 16 spokes twists so that the light-catching contours radiate to the centre of the wheel hub. The effect: The wheel appears larger than its actual dimensions of 8.5 J x 20 at the front and 9.5 J x 20 at the rear.

As standard the forged wheels feature a high-quality, screw-on, fully integrated wheel bolt cover in forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a centre lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG lettering is incorporated into the rim as a design element. Three further forged wheels in the same format are available as optional alternatives – one design variant with a matt black finish and high-sheen rim flange.

Optional ceramic high-performance composite brake system

The high-performance composite brake system features large brake discs and brake callipers with a grey finish – red callipers are available as an optional extra. A ceramic high-performance composite braking system with 420 x 40 mm discs at the front and 360 x 32 mm discs at the rear is optionally available. This is around 40 percent lighter in weight. The lower unsprung masses improve driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort.

Extensive standard equipment with head-up display and touchpad

The extensive range of standard equipment for the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet includes the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects key information such as the vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation directions, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen. The visualisation of the engine speed and the current gear is exclusive to AMG. In Manual transmission mode, a coloured upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are also protected onto the windscreen. The virtual colour display measuring 21 x 7 centimetres appears to float on the bonnet at a distance of about two metres from the driver. The innovative touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. In contrast to conventional systems, the touchpad can be used to operate all of the infotainment functions. The input area is approximately 6.5 x 4.5 centimetres in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad.

Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety

The new S 65 Cabriolet is available with numerous innovative assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safe. “Intelligent Drive” systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features distance and collision warning functions with adaptive Brake Assist, offering protection against collisions from just 7 km/h, plus an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to more than 100 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. At speeds of up to around 50 km/h the system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to around 40 km/h.

The preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® has also been extended. As PRE-SAFE® PLUS, it can now also recognise an imminent rear-end collision and warn following traffic by activating the rear hazard warning lights at a high frequency. When a danger of collision persists, the system can “lock” the brakes of the stationary vehicle prior to a rear-end collision and activate the PRE-SAFE® belt tensioners immediately before impact. This action minimises the risk of whiplash injury by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact, and ensuring that the occupants are in the best possible position.

2016 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG 4Matic First Drive

Mercedes' C450 brings AMG absurdity to the masses

As a Luxury automaker, Mercedes-Benz certainly produces several versions of the “made it” car — the one you buy to show off exactly how successful you are at life. The most coveted of these models come from its famed tuning house, AMG, and they pack in the most elegance and performance Mercedes can possibly stuff into a passenger vehicle. Unfortunately, they’re often too expensive for anyone without cavernous pockets. So, what do you do if you crave Affalterbach’s finest but aren’t rich enough to own one?

For you, Mercedes has introduced AMG Sport, a new level that bridges the gap between the standard luxury lineup and the performance elites, debuting in the form of both the GLE 450 crossover and the C450 sedan. I took the latter on a jaunt through Knoxville’s twisty back roads to see if this new brand of AMG is worthy of its name.

Baller status

The Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG 4Matic houses a 3.0-liter Biturbo V6 that churns up 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Power goes to all four wheels by way of a seven-speed automatic transmission.

At first glance, the C450 AMG is a clear mix of the base-model C-class and the 63 AMG performance car. Like its V8-powered big brother, the C450 AMG sports the single-bar grille nestled against a mesh of diamond-shaped chrome pins that radiate from the center logo. If it sounds fancy, that’s because it is. This is just the right amount of bling to separate it from the standard package, yet keep it more casual than the serious-looking AMG.

Other touches like the iridium silver diffuser on the rear and distinctive, sporty air vents convey the performance ambition of the C450.

Made for the loud, young, and affluent

Settling inside the cabin, it’s very clear that Mercedes is targeting young affluent folks who haven’t completely (or refuse to) grow up into professional adults. Instead of supple, genuine leather, the C450 AMG interior is filled with man-made MB-Tex leather with suede-like Dinamica inserts contrast with red stitching. There’s nothing wrong with these imitation materials, but they do feel like less like the Mercedes experience. Toss in bright red seatbelts and checkered-flag-emblazoned gauge faces, and you may be hesitant to take the car — and anyone behind the wheel — seriously.

Regardless of these small nitpicks, the interior is very streamlined and little clutters up the space inside the car, with only the “Comand” infotainment interface and drive select modes occupying the center console. For the dash, a very simple and elegant climate control layout separates minimal media functions from the 8.4-inch Comand screen.

Mercedes-Benz’s Comand system has been the centerpiece for modern Mercedes vehicles across the board, giving not only optional navigation functions, but providing a hub for a myriad of different settings. Here, occupants can go through several different screens and adjust almost every element of the car’s functions and tweak them as preferred. Driving settings can also change up the driving characteristics to their liking. This is done either through the menu or quickly selected by the button on the Comand console. With just a few inputs, the C450 can be configured like an airy, comfortable cruiser, or a fireball ready to attack the track. As we were winding up to cut through some infamous backroads, I chose the latter.

Riding ‘the dragon’

For those unfamiliar with “the dragon,” it’s a notorious stretch of road that runs through the Tennessee and North Carolina border. The windy stretch has been popular with motorcyclists for years, with performance cars quickly joining the mix.

The cars that come to challenge it aren’t usually luxury sedans, but the C450 AMG, among ‘Vettes, bikes, and spoiler-sporting modded racers, caught many by surprise. Under the hood is Mercedes’ 3.0-liter Biturbo V6 that pumps out a very satisfying 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Laying my foot down and firing through the first kinks in the dragon’s tail, the power plant is quick to respond with little hesitation as it sends juice to all four wheels. Torque in the AMG Sport’s 4Matic is biased to the rear with a 40-60 split, giving the car enough sporty dynamics to be fun while confidently keeping me from going overboard with help from the front.

Also keeping me on my toes is the seven-speed Speedshift transmission tuned by AMG to quickly select gears as I accelerate, blipping the engine and rev matching automatically when I slow down. The dynamic programming of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) when in Sport Plus mode keeps me at the tachometer’s sweet spot and fully opens up the exhaust valves. It’s not as raucous-sound as a V8 would supply, but it barks with satisfaction.

With a curb weight of 3,727lbs, it’s not the lightest car on the road, but it never feels heavy or that it’s laboring to perform. The multilink independent suspension, which has been tuned by AMG to their specific standards, also made quick work of the series of switchbacks I encountered. The front suspension benefits from AMG-specific components as well.

All told, this translates into a very encouraging mid-size luxury sedan that is very encouraging when it comes to fun backroad detours. Capable of jumping from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds (4.8 seconds specifically, claims Mercedes), the C450 AMG rarely left me feeling like something was lacking in the performance department.
Impressive when it needs to be

A sedan that manages to fit both luxury and performance comes at a cost. The C450 AMG Sport will start at $50,800, but throw in things like a fully-loaded Comand system, panorama roof, and drive assistants like the Distronic Plus cruise control with cross-traffic assist, and the bottom line can easily climb north of $60,000.

Mercedes and its sporty coupe has tough competition like the top of the line BMW 2-series, the M235i XDrive coupe, and Cadillac’s ATS-V sedan. Starting at around $46,000 and $60,000 respectively, it manages to land in the middle of them. In terms of price, the base price for the BMW edges it out, but when it comes to power, the 464 hp Cadillac takes it home. It’s also not stymied by the electronically limited 155 mph that German cars are usually stuck with.

On a daily basis, it maintains a stellar balance of being subtle enough for all occasions, but with enough of a sporty edge to make an impression when you need it.

At the end of the day, there’s plenty of things to like about the C450 AMG Sport to keep you happy until the lease is up. But sooner than later, go-getters that live for status will chafe at the idea of not having the best of the best, regardless of how good it is. Owning the C450 doesn’t mean you’ve “made it,” but you’re certainly on your way.
