The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive onboard the Mercedes A45 AMG sets new standards in the car's segment

The new Mercedes A45 AMG is the first compact class car in the company’s history to be offered as part of the high-performance AMG group. The A45 AMG is representative of the “AMG Performance 50” strategy for the future, which will run until the 50th birthday of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017. With a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world. The sensational power density of 133 kW (181 hp) outstrips even the most powerful super sports cars. At the same time, the engine also boasts supreme efficiency and complies with the EU6 emissions standard. The A45 AMG also leads its segment in terms of fuel consumption, running on 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode. These credentials indicate that a further high-performing member of the BlueDIRECT family is now taking to the road. The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive onboard the A45 AMG sets new standards in the car’s segment.

The substance of the new Mercedes-Benz vehicle architecture for front- and all-wheel drive provides the perfect basis for the A45 AMG and at least two other high-performance premium automobiles from Affalterbach. In designing and developing the A45 AMG, the experts at AMG have drawn on the company’s decades of experience in motorsport and the production of powerful, high-performance vehicles. As such, the A45 AMG will inherit the corporate DNA and embody the AMG brand claim “Driving Performance” to perfection: a fascinatingly sporty driving experience combined with impressive craftsmanship and pronounced individuality.

“The A45 AMG will enable Mercedes-AMG to appeal to new customers and tap new markets,” observes Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. We are adding an extremely attractive model with exceptional performance data to our range of unique high-performance automobiles.”

2014 Mercedes A45 AMG

“With the new A45 AMG we have well and truly achieved our aim of developing the most dynamic, powerful and efficient four-cylinder series production car,” comments Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.With its impressive high-tech package and the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the A45 AMG is a thoroughbred AMG through and through.”

Dynamic and individual vehicle for new target group

Spanning the age range from 30 to mid-40, the target group is younger than the AMG clientele to date. In successful careers and with an independent frame of mind, these customers seek a dynamic and individual vehicle. They wish to lend expression to their style- and trend-oriented way of life with a car from a recognised high-performance brand. The A45 AMG provides the predominantly urban target group with an agile high-performance vehicle. Mercedes-AMG accommodates their tech-savvy and individual outlook on life with an extremely broad selection of optional equipment and appointments, colors and materials.

Typically AMG: the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world

Two figures show that the A45 AMG holds pole position in its displacement segment:the newly developed AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world. A maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque are unmatched by any other mass-produced turbocharged four-cylinder engine worldwide. The power density of 133 kW (181 hp) is also absolutely unrivalled. In this discipline, the new AMG high-performance turbo engine even outstrips the most powerful super sports cars.

The high power and torque output and the combination with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard lead to extremely dynamic performance: the A45 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). The specially developed AMG engine is also a model of efficiency – the A45 AMG also leads its segment on this front, with fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode. This is accompanied by particularly low exhaust emissions: the A45 AMG already complies with the EU6 emissions standard which is not scheduled to enter into force until 2015, combined with the limit for the particle count per kilometre of 6 x 1011 which will be mandatory from 2017.

The basis for these impressive figures is provided by the high-tech package which has been put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance engine belonging to the BlueDIRECT family, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel utilisation and increases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, leading to lower exhaust emissions. Other highlights include the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-optimised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.

Twin-scroll turbocharger and AMG sports exhaust systemwith exhaust flap

Mercedes-AMG addresses the essential challenges concerning the response of small-displacement turbo engines by means of a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum derestriction of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. The twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure, making effective use of exhaust gas back pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas impulse. This results in a swifter build-up of torque right from the lower rev range. As a positive side-effect, the twin-scroll technology also benefits fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. At a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine also leads the field in this respect.

The AMG sports exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap. This technology, which is familiar from the SLK 55 AMG, reconciles the two apparently conflicting aims of tangible dynamism and hallmark Mercedes comfort on long journeys. The flap is continuously adjusted by map control according to the power called up by the driver, load status and engine speed. The two striking tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating, full engine sound which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration.

An AMG Performance exhaust system with exhaust flap and featuring a dedicated tailpipe trim design is optionally available for the A45 AMG. This provides for an even more emotional and striking engine sound when the throttle is open and during gear shifting. The double-declutching function during downshifting and the interruption of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load produce a particularly throaty sound with the AMG Performance exhaust system and create a level of emotionality which is otherwise the reserve of engines with more than 4 cylinders.

High-performance cooling system with components from the SLS AMG

The high driving dynamics of the A45 AMG call for a highly effective cooling system. On the basis of the components belonging to the SLS AMG, a low-temperature circuit is additionally deployed for air-water charge air cooling of the four-cylinder turbo engine. The large cooler section at the front level of the cooling module is supplemented by an additional cooler in the wheel arch. Together with the charge air cooler which is connected in series, a high-performance electric pump ensures the required flow through the water coolers located behind the large intake ports. This provides for ideal cooling of the highly compressed charge air, thereby contributing towards optimum engine performance.

Cooling of the transmission oil is integrated in the water cooling circuit for the engine. The water cooler positioned behind the front apron is supported by the heat exchanger which is fitted directly on the transmission and supplied with cooling water as required by means of an auxiliary pump.

Engine production – a tradition of hand-built excellence

Similarly to all eight- and twelve-cylinder engines, the new AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is also hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of “one man, one engine”. An exclusive assembly line has been set up for the new AMG engine at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Kölleda – where all BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines are built for the A- and B-Class models. A characteristic feature of the “one man, one engine” production process is the AMG engine plate bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine plate also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission

Dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive – the drive package onboard the new A45 AMG is a demonstration of high-end engineering prowess. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is directly flange-mounted on the transversely installed AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine. Key software modules have been adopted from the SLS AMG super sports car with its inspirational power transmission concept. The dual clutch transmission of the A45 features seven gears, three driving programmes, a double-declutching function and RACE START for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the AMG DCT sports transmission include spontaneous gear shifting without any interruption in tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy, extremely smooth and easy gear shifting and a high level of efficiency. Reinforced gear wheels provide for maximum stability. Synchroniser rings with carbon-fibre friction linings improve durability while also optimising the response time during manual gear-changing – the ideal basis for ambitious laps on cordoned-off race tracks.

“Momentary M mode” for even greater dynamism and driving enjoyment

Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving enjoyment is so-called “Momentary M mode”. In C and S mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode (“M”) without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the “up” or “down” shift paddle once. In Momentary M mode the driver experiences the dynamism and performance of gear-shifting in manual mode in all of the automatic driving programmes, with automatic up- and down-shifting into the bargain. This allows the driver to devote his full attention to the vehicle’s impressive performance.

The shift times in manual mode “M” and in Sport mode “S” are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car.Briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than ever. In “C” mode (Controlled Efficiency), tangibly soft transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. The ECO start/stop function is also active in “C” mode.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The new A45 AMG comes with variable, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard. In developing this all-wheel drive, the focus firmly was on performance and dynamism. The power flux to the rear powertrain is provided by a compact power take-off unit (PTU) which is fully integrated in the 7-speed sports transmission. It does not possess an oil circuit of its own. Instead, it is supplied with lubricant from the oil circuit of the sports transmission . This configuration gives rise to substantial weight advantages in comparison to rival systems which branch off power by means of an add-on component with its own oil circuit. Together with the friction-minimised tapered roller bearings, the PTU achieves an excellent level of efficiency. As an additional bonus, the system weight of the new AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive is up to 25 percent lighter than the all-wheel drive versions offered by the competition.

A two-part propeller shaft transfers the power from the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine to the rear axle. In the interests of favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch is integrated with the rear axle differential. The multi-disc clutch immediately detects slip at the front axle. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this takes place virtually without the driver noticing. To enable particularly fast response, the pump is always active and does not require to be started up each time it is needed, such as is customary with other systems. Power distribution is fully variable: in normal driving, the A45 AMG uses front-wheel drive in the interests of optimum efficiency. When the driving dynamics so require, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits the torque between front and rear axle up to a ratio of 50 : 50 percent. The variables influencing the power distribution ratio are vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, speed difference between the individual wheels, selected gear and accelerator position.

3-stage ESP® with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist

An exclusive feature is the interaction of the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive with the 3-stage ESP® and the ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist. The three ESP® stages enable the driver to vary the dynamics of the A45 AMG according to his individual wishes at the push of a button. The safety-oriented “ESP ON” mode supports the driver in maintaining neutral handling characteristics. The system initiates braking intervention on one or more wheels and reduces the engine torque on detecting that the operating conditions are becoming unstable.

Briefly pressing the ESP® button activates “ESP SPORT Handling” mode. This dynamically oriented driving mode applies appropriate control strategies for later ESP® intervention and increased drive torque at the rear axle. This means more fun at the wheel for drivers who are keen to exploit the vehicle’s dynamic potential. Pressing the ESP® button longer activates “ESP OFF”. In this mode, the ESP® functions are not available. ESP OFF should only be used by experienced drivers on cordoned-off race tracks. When the driver steps on the brake pedal in the course of braking in “SPORT Handling” mode or “ESP OFF” mode, all the safety functions of the ESP® system are restored.

ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist complements the ESP® system to perfection: during dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the inside wheel gives rise to a defined yaw moment around the vertical axis, resulting in precise cornering by the A45 AMG and ensuring that the vehicle remains under control at all times. Curve Dynamic Assist is adapted according to the selected ESP® mode. In “ESP SPORT Handling” mode and “ESP OFF” mode it supports the driver’s wish for increased agility and driving dynamics. ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist is an additional function of the Electronic Stability Program which noticeably improves not only agility, but also active driving safety in critical conditions.

AMG sports suspension with independent front and rear axle

Like every AMG high-performance automobile, the new A45 AMG also incorporates sophisticated axle technology. For enhanced driving dynamics, the three-link front suspension is provided with stiffer steering knuckles and totally new elastokinematics. Newly developed, more rigid bearings are employed in the lower link plane. These provide for more agile cornering properties and more precise and direct feedback from the road surface. The more rigid bearings also lead to higher camber stiffness, enabling higher cornering speeds. In developing the complete front axle, great importance has been attached to attaining the best possible traction in highly dynamic driving.

The four-link rear axle of the A45 AMG is also a totally new development. In the course of optimising the elastokinematics, the strut bearings were duly adapted for maximum driving dynamics and control. The rear axle carrier is provided with more rigid bearings for increased driving stability; the subframe is rigidly connected to the body. The AMG sports suspension with specifically tuned spring/damper units and larger stabilisers provides for high lateral acceleration and a reduced rolling tendency in fast double bends. The A45 AMG comes as standard with twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, fitted with 235/40 R 18 tyres.

AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and AMG high-performance braking system

The electromechanical Dual Pinion AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with AMG-specific, speed-dependent power assistance and a constant steering ratio (14.5 : 1) enables high steering precision and agility. The electric motor is installed in space-saving configuration on the steering gear. The AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated brake discs all round in size 350 x 32 millimetres at the front and 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear provides for spontaneous and reliable deceleration.

Exterior design with sporty and muscular highlights

Mercedes-AMG adds emphatically sporty and muscular highlights to the emotional exterior design of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sporting the new dynamic style, sculptural character and feature lines on the sides. These refinements ensure that the A45 AMG looks the part as a distinctive high-performance automobile – a genuine AMG through and through.

The front view of the A45 AMG is characterised by the AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the cross strut in the AMG front apron, both painted in matt titanium grey. Striking black flics surround the large cooling air intakes at the sides. Top Eight Finalist for Car of the Year 2013

Eight candidates have been nominated finalists for Car of the Year 2013, the winner will be selected in March

This year, eight candidates (up from the normal seven) have been nominated finalists for Car of the Year 2013. The final election will find the single winner early in March of next year.

Here, in no particular order, are the full list of contestants for Car of the Year 2013.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Once abandoned the clever sandwich structure of previous A/B-class cars, Mercedes Benz gives a more conventional substance to its new models with those nameplates. Also a much more dynamic personality. The A-class is not a MPV any more, even if cabin roominess is better than its sleek silhouette suggests. It is a hot hatch instead, rivalling with other premium models. Driving pleasure is high in the list of requests. Consequently, a quick steering and good handling are provided. Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, combined with a 6-gear manual transmission, unite reasonable performance and fuel efficiency. The automated 7-speed double clutch ‘box with its lever by the steering wheel is even more pleasant.

Ford B-Max

Innovative B-Max has a new role in the Ford Europe range: a practical and nice-looking mini-MPV derived from Fiesta. Kind of a reply to Opel Meriva, B-Max also offers very good access to its cabin. In this case, the sliding rear doors and the pillarless body sides give an ample entry to the cosy interior. In the other hand, there is more than adequate passive protection in the sides, once the reinforced doors return to the closed position. The small MPV also holds the road and has a good ride. Fuel efficient powertrains include the 3-cylinder 1.0 Ecoboost petrol engine; suitable for much bigger cars, it excels here. In the rich equipment, the voice-activated Sync communication system stars, as the Active City Stop does in the safety department.

Hyundai i30

Hyundai has connected well with European automotive preferences in recent times. And the original i30 was the first Hyundai car made in Europe. New generation is a good follow-up on that approach. Looks are much more refined than before; aerodynamics too. The 5-door hatch cabin is roomy and the boot bigger, despite keeping the same wheelbase. Inside, perceived quality also improves and the noise is well damped. Hyundai sticks to a multilink suspension for the rear axle and it positively shows in ride and handling. There is a 3-door version with almost equal dimensions, while the practical estate body style is bigger in length and wheelbase. Performance and fuel economy go together, especially with the 1.6 CRDi engine.

Peugeot 208

The nice saga of small Peugeots goes on, now with a stylish car that is shorter than its predecessor, and at the same time reasonably roomy and with a slightly bigger boot. The carry-over floorpan has been extensively re-worked, so the new Peugeot has a more refined ride and better handling too. Weight has been saved here and there, so to offer a nimbler handling and better fuel efficiency. The engine line includes new 3-cylinder 1.0/1.2 petrol units, with fuel economy not so far from the sparing diesel engines. The cockpit, with a good driving position, is unique in the fact that the tiny steering wheel lies so low that the driver has to read the instrumentation over the rim, instead of through the wheel spokes.

Renault Clio

Award-winning Clio has had a love affair with CotY in its first and third generations. Now the fourth one comes with renovated ambitions. Due to the trends of the market and the diminishing demand for 3-door cars, there will just be one 5-door body to begin with; then a Grand Tour estate version will come. Aesthetically new Clio follows inside and out the traits laid down by the concept car DeZir, one new direction in looks to also be seen in future production models. Wider, longer and with more cargo capacity, but less tall, the new Renault has also a lower weight to emphasize its fuel efficiency and handling. Its refined 1.5 diesel undergoes a further evolution, while a new turbocharged 3-cylinder 0.9 petrol engine announces very good fuel economy.

Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT86

The partnership of Subaru with Toyota group is materialized in this twin project of sports 2+2 seater. Subaru and Toyota affordable and engaging coupes are not totally identical, but more than close enough to obtain synergy in a low-volume model. The 4-cylinder boxer engine layout is typically Subaru, even if the cars are not 4×4. Front 2-liter engine, with 200 hp, sends power to the rear wheels through a conventional prop shaft. Either vehicle is entertaining and suggests an inexpensive and sporty driving, even if the grip and braking power are not outstanding. Toyota TRD division sees to that with kits to enhance chassis, tyres and brakes so to even envisage track driving.

Volkswagen Golf

The Golf, now in its 7th generation since 1974, has had such a global acceptance its current production record nears 30 million units. Despite some criticism for lack of visual originality and boldness, most of potential buyers love that continuity of trademark image embodied in the new model. Just launched in 3/5-door body style, the Golf will know later the customary derivatives: estate, Plus, cabrio… Driving impressions on the new car have generally been very favourable in the motoring press because of its dynamic balance, good equipment, safety and ease of use. New engines increase their performance, smoothness and fuel efficiency, including a 1.4 TSI petrol unit with ACT cylinder deactivation.

Volvo V40

First entirely new model under Chinese control, the V40 mixes classicism, outstanding design and faithfulness to core Volvo values. It is a true premium compact for elegance, comfort and dynamics. One single 5-door body style caters for everything. The silhouette looks almost as an estate car; the classy cabin and boot are not so generous. In top of its City Safety active braking, the V40 offers the first pedestrian airbag of the industry. A whole range of turbo engines covers the needs of many kinds of customers, from the thrifty 1.6 D2 diesel to the lively 1.6 T4 with 180 hp. Anyone looking for more muscular performance will find it in the 2.5 T5 five-cylinder with 250 hp, double-clutch gearbox and sports chassis and trim.

The A250 sprints 0-62 mph in a mere 6.2 seconds, while its top speed sits at 155 mph (250 km/h).  Even with these updates, the car is rather efficient, managing 6.1 liters per 100 km (38.6 US mpg) and emitting 143 grams of CO2 per km.

Mercedes Celebrated Three Battery-Electric Drive Vehicle Premieres in Paris

Mercedes Premiered the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive, the smart BRABUS electric drive and the B-Class Electric Drive concept

Electric cars from Mercedes-Benz and smart are already covering the entire spectrum of individual mobility. This is underscored by the three new battery-electric drive vehicles celebrating their premieres at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Together with the series-production version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive and the smart BRABUS electric drive, the show also sees the premiere of the B-Class Electric Drive concept, a battery-electric variant of the B-Class. While both two-seaters set sporty accents – each in their own way – the electric B‑Class, due for market launch in 2014, presents a compelling case with its full everyday usability. Mercedes-Benz is setting further accents at the world’s most-visited motor show with the equally environmentally friendly B-Class Natural Gas Drive, as well as the new A-Class, which is already enjoying a very successful market debut here in France.

“Three new electric cars in three different segments – a wonderful demonstration of our broad-ranging e-mobility line-up. Our new electric SLS of course symbolizes the dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand in a particularly impressive fashion,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The three electric cars shown in Paris come with the suffix “Electric Drive” in their model designations. In future, this lettering will grace the rear lid of all battery-electric passenger vehicles from Mercedes‑Benz, Mercedes-AMG and smart.

The B-Class Electric Drive concept combines comfortable driving fun with full everyday and family usability. It is driven by a 100 kW electric motor, which delivers exceptional dynamics plus a range of 200 kilometres thanks to its powerful torque of 310 Newton metres. Ensuring that the generous and variable interior space remains unaffected is the “ENERGY SPACE” in the vehicle floor in front of the rear axle. It provides a space-saving and secure location for the lithium-ion battery, while also benefitting the vehicle’s centre of gravity.

“Electric cars are a significant component of our strategy for sustainable mobility,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “In the B-Class, we have an extremely versatile compact car that is well-suited to a variety of different drives – from internal combustion engines through pure battery-electric drive to fuel cells. Thanks to the ENERGY SPACE, the B-Class is the Mercedes pioneer for alternative drives in the compact premium car segment.”

SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive – the most powerful super sports car with electric drive

Mercedes-AMG is launching a whole new era with the new SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive – the zero-local-emissions super sports car with Formula 1 high-tech is the most exclusive and dynamic way to drive an electric car. The most powerful of all AMG high-performance vehicles is equipped with four electric motors delivering a total output of 552 kW and maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. smart is expanding its portfolio of zero-local-emission cars to include the particularly dynamic smart BRABUS electric drive. Like the production model, the uprated variant is available as a coupé and a cabrio. “The smart BRABUS electric drive is our sports car with a green heart”, says smart boss Dr Annette Winkler. “Electric driving in the city is more fun than ever with short bundle of power.” The same applies outside city limits: the smart BRABUS electric drive sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds and with a top speed of 130 km/h it is also a little faster than the basic model. And despite the enhanced performance it has the same range of 145 kilometres (NEDC).

With the smart forstars, smart is continuing its series of clever concept vehicles and also offering a glimpse of the brand’s future design idiom. smart’s presentation in Paris will focus on the world premiere of the electrically driven two-seater that features an integrated video projector. Further new products that smart is presenting at the Mondial de l’Automobile are the special model smart fortwo edition iceshine and the dynamic smart BRABUS electric drive.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive Concept – The electric Mercedes in the compact segment

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive concept is powered by an electric motor, which puts out 100 kW and 310 Nm of torque. This powertrain can take the electric B Class from nought to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than 10 seconds and up to a top speed of 150 km/h. Mercedes says that with a fully charged battery, the B Class electric is able to run for up to 200 km. If you’re batter is empty, and you need to drive for a maximum of 100 km, you only need to recharge it for an hour. To save energy, Mercedes used the “keep it clean”

A super start for the new A-Class – 70,000 advance orders in Western Europe

A further Mercedes highlight in Paris is the new A-Class, which is already enjoying a very successful market debut in France. More than 60,000 potential customers came to the market launch in the showrooms of French Mercedes dealerships. A total of around 700,000 visitors took part in the market premiere. Dieter Zetsche: “We have taken around 70,000 advance orders in Western Europe alone. This makes the market premiere of the new A-Class the most successful experienced by Mercedes-Benz to date.”

The new A-Class has an exceptionally emotional design, with dynamic engines ranging from 80 kW (109 hp) to 155 kW (211 hp). It is highly efficient, with emissions figures starting at 98 g CO2/km, it has a best-in-class cd value of 0.27 and boasts exemplary safety. The list of standard equipment includes the radar-guided assistance system COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST. The petrol engines and the top diesel unit already fulfil the EURO 6 standard, setting the benchmark for clean exhaust emissions.

2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class by Brabus

Brabus unveiled their latest tuning creation based on the all new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback

German tuner, Brabus, unveiled their latest creation based on the all new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback.  The first images of the shiny red hatchback riding on a lowered sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels in the classic Brabus design show us what will be possible for the most current generation of the A-Class that will soon begin arriving in showrooms across Europe

Brabus tells Carscoop that there is more to come, and while they didn’t go into any further details, it’s safe to say that among other parts, we should expect to see an aero body kit, custom exhaust systems, more alloy wheel options, power kits and select interior upgrades such as scuff plates and custom leather upholstery.

In the meantime, to wet your appetite, view the photo gallery below and remember to click for hi-resoution photos.

2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Model Range

With "Urban", "Style" and "AMG Sport" options and more optional extras, the A-Class can be customised to you

With air conditioning, Audio 5 USB, electric windows all round, Headlamp Assist, 12-button multifunction steering wheel and the comprehensive safety package including COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, the A-Class is already fully equipped even in its base configuration. With “Urban”, “Style” and “AMG Sport” appointment lines, three Design packages as well as further optional extras, the model can be customised to suit every individual taste. Available appointments, many familiar from higher vehicle classes, also include the Intelligent Light System, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function or dashboard finished in ARTICO man-made leather. Further sporty details designed to appeal to the vehicle’s young target group include designo seat belts in red or the sporty instrument cluster featuring a “chequered flag” design.

All three design and equipment lines can basically be combined with all engine variants. The “Style” line has a radiator grille with two slats in the vehicle colour and chrome inserts, and the waistline trim strip is finished in a chrome look. The stylish appearance is enhanced further with light-alloy wheels featuring a 10-spoke design and measuring either 16 inches (all models except for the A 250 BlueEFFICIENCY) or 17 inches (A 250 BlueEFFICIENCY). Highlights in the interior include matrix-look trim elements as well as front sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather/Messancy fabric with contrasting stitching. Contrasting stitching is also to be found on the armrests on the centre console and the doors. The gear lever has a silver chrome surround. The ring around the headlamp switch and the nozzle crosses on the air vents in the dashboard are also finished in silver chrome.

Practical details of the “Style” line include the Seat Comfort package (with height adjustment for the front passenger seat and seat cushion angle adjustment for driver and front passenger), multifunction holder in the centre console and 12 V socket in the rear.

A particular feature of the “Urban” line is the sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured circular instruments, “chequered flag” design and red dial pointers. This is matched by the checked pattern of the trim elements. The dynamic impression continues with the sports seats with upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/Larochette fabric. Contrasting stitching is used on the seats, armrests, multifunction steering wheel and the gear lever in nappa leather. The 3-spoke steering wheel also has a perforated grip area. The Seat Comfort package, multifunction holder in the centre console and 12 V socket in the rear again come as standard, as does the chrome finish on the headlamp switch and nozzle crosses. Distinctive characteristics of the exterior include the twin-pipe exhaust system with oval tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel and the radiator grille with silver-coloured twin slats with chrome highlights. The “Urban” line also features a chrome-look waistline trim strip and 17-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels.

“AMG Sport” is the name of the third equipment line, which again is available for all engine variants. This is the line in which the colour red comes into play: it features in the contrasting stitching on the sports seats (with upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre), the nappa leather multifunction steering wheel with flattened bottom section, and the armrests. This is matched with the sporty instrument cluster with silver-coloured circular instruments, “chequered flag” design and red dial pointers as well as sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs. Trim elements feature a chrome-look finish, and the front and rear door sill panels are made of aluminium. The sporty theme is continued with the exterior: as standard the “AMG Sport” model boasts a twin-pipe exhaust system with oval tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel, silver-painted radiator grille with chrome inserts, 18-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels and AMG bodystyling (front and rear aprons and side sill panels). Those opting for the “AMG Sport” model will also get an A-Class with a sports suspension, lowered body and Direct-Steer system. The front brake discs are also perforated.

Even more dynamic: the A 250 Sport

In the case of the A 250 Sport, the “AMG Sport” appointment line is available as standard. The visual affinity to the Concept A-CLASS is especially evident with these models – particularly due to the new diamond grille. The A-Class Sport features exclusive 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a 5-spoke design with 235/40 R 18 tyres all round and painted in high-gloss black with a high-sheen finish, together with red-painted brake callipers. These give an indication of the vehicle’s particularly dynamic driving qualities which are characterised, amongst other features, by a special AMG-developed front axle and a suspension that has been configured to match. With its special engine and transmission configuration, the A 250 Sport also provides a very special driving experience which is enhanced further by the emotionally appealing sound of the modified exhaust system.

Hints of red on the AMG front and rear aprons also serve to emphasise the expressive positioning of the new model. In conjunction with Intelligent Light System or bi-xenon lights, the headlamps also have red highlight rings. The contrast between black trim and additional accents in red continues in the interior: the contrasting decorative topstitching on the steering wheel and seats is in this same bright shade, as are the seat belts. The highlight rings of the air vents are similarly finished in red.

Even more choice: the three Design packages

Further individualisation options are possible with the three Design packages which are available for all engine variants. The “Night package” builds on the scope of equipment making up the Style, Urban, and AMG Sport lines as well as the Sport model and supplements them further with a variety of different, additional appointments. The exterior highlights include:

  • gloss black radiator grille with chrome inserts (except the A 250 Sport)
  • black-painted exterior mirrors (not in conjunction with magno and black metallic paint finishes as in those cases they are in the vehicle colour)
  • beltline trim strip in high-gloss black
  • heat-insulating dark-tinted glass as of B-pillar
  • 18-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matt black and with a high-sheen finish (in conjunction with AMG Sport: AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels)

The Exclusive package, which can be chosen in addition to one of three equipment lines, does full justice to its name, featuring a high-quality interpretation of the compact class with leather sports seats, dashboard and door centre panels in ARTICO man-made leather with contrasting stitching, and also trim elements in the appointments colour. The scope of equipment includes a 3-spoke leather steering wheel with 12 function buttons, as well as an infrared receiver in the driver’s door (summer opening/closing function), electric 4-way lumbar support on the front seats and heated seats.

The “AMG Exclusive package”, which is only available in conjunction with the “AMG Sport” equipment line and cannot be combined with the Exclusive package, comprises the following details:

  • heated front sports seats with black RED CUT leather upholstery with red contrasting stitching as well as 4-way lumbar support
  • dashboard in ARTICO man-made leather with red contrasting (upper part) and high-gloss headlamp switch with silver-chrome surround ring and air vents with silver-chrome surrounds and crosses
  • cover over the stowage compartment in the centre console
  • infrared receiver in the driver’s door (summer opening/closing function)

From ‘A’ for accessories to ‘X’ for xenon: additional optional extras

The A-Class is optionally available with bi-xenon lights instead of halogen lights. The latter are furthermore optionally combinable with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). ILS, which is familiar from other Mercedes model lines, comprises bi-xenon headlamps with variable light distribution and dynamic headlamp range for country roads, motorways and dense fog, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, active light function, LED daytime driving lights and headlamp cleaning system.

The Light and Sight package comprises the following details:

  • indirect illumination of front and rear door handles/door openers
  • front and rear footwell illumination
  • illuminated vanity mirrors for driver and front passenger
  • illuminated interior mirror
  • illuminated stowage compartment in the centre console
  • reading lights and console light in the roof lining in the rear
  • illuminated door sill panels
  • illuminated openings in the front and rear head restraints (sports seats only)
  • courtesy and warning lights for driver and front passenger
  • warning and ambient lighting in the boot lid
  • windscreen wipers with rain sensor

A reversing camera is optionally available starting with the Audio 20 CD. This is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged. It supports the driver during lengthways and crossways parking manoeuvres by means of static and dynamic guide lines indicating the vehicle’s line of travel and clearances. Active Parking Assist offers even greater comfort here (see section “Driving assistance systems”).

Internet access, the convenient LINGUATRONIC voice control system, two navigation solutions tailored to different budgets, connection for mobile audio devices, iPhone® integration and an intuitive operating concept – the A-Class offers information and communication systems with a superior level of functionality which to date has been the reserve of higher vehicle classes. For details see the section on “Multimedia systems”.

Fitted as standard to each A-Class is the THERMATIC manual air conditioning system. Just like the THERMOTRONIC two-zone automatic air conditioning system (optional extra), it has been enhanced in a number of areas. The air conditioning systems now feature noticeably quieter and vibration-free operation, since the blower motor has been mechanically isolated from the housing using special rubber elements. Furthermore, the equipment features optimised air intake in snow and more manual blower settings. An important development goal was also the efficient handling of the drive energy. The air conditioning compressor is operated based on actual requirements, and in dry weather or at temperatures at which no cooling is necessary, the compressor is automatically and steplessly throttled back.

Other optional extras include front seats with memory function, automatic dimming interior and exterior mirrors, designo seat belts in red (expected to be available from the fourth quarter of 2012) for driver and front passenger and rear outer seats, electrically operated panoramic sliding sunroof, auxiliary heating, folding trailer coupling and a Stowage Space package. The latter comprises a spectacles compartment in the overhead control panel, stowage boxes beneath the front seats, nets beneath the parcel shelf, in the front passenger footwell, on the front seat backrests and on the left and right of the luggage compartment, as well as a 12 V socket in the luggage compartment.
