Christmas Comes Early in Germany

Mercedes-Benz is hitting the floor with an all-new GLA crossover, the wildly-racy-for-a-sedan S63 AMG, and a new generation S-Class coupe

Frohe Weihnachten, everyone! OK, so it’s not the officially sanctioned holiday season just yet, neither here nor in Germany, but this time of year is as good as it gets for car junkies. The annual International Motor Show in Frankfurt – the largest auto show in the world – is among us, and boy, am I pumped! The rumble of tailpipes, the flash of headlights, the invigoration of taking a seat behind the wheels of the finest automobiles in the world – to me, there’s nothing better. I can’t wait to see what surprises the auto industry has in store for us!

Allow me to digress; most auto shows don’t have me frothing at the mouth. In fact, working a show as a sales person is usually torture, to put it mildly. Fielding an onslaught of questions, navigating throngs of people – by the end of the day, you’re a walking zombie. Even the most fervent car enthusiast like myself finds their excitement waning. But the Frankfurt show is different, peeps. This is the crème de la crème, the Super Bowl, the Olympics of auto shows and it never disappoints. Mark my words, the world will be watching to get a glimpse of all the new benchmarks in automotive advancements.

For me, this year is more special than normal because Mercedes-Benz has a lineup ready to unveil that will knock it out of the park! But that’s no surprise, really. And as we say in Texas, if you’re not the lead dog of the pack, the scenery never changes. Let me tell you, Mercedes-Benz has earned its rightful place as the head of the pack, and you can bet they’re there to stay.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Mercedes-Benz GLA Crossover

Alright, alright. Enough foreplay (we’re talking cars here, folks). Mercedes-Benz is hitting the floor with the all-new GLA crossover, the wildly-racy-for-a-sedan S63 AMG, and the new generation S-Class coupe that has everyone swooning. Plus advances in Electric Drive, forward-thinking Intelligent Drive technology, astounding 0 to 62mph capability in 3.9 seconds, and a multi-camera system that continually evaluates surroundings for safety hazards. Ahhhhh, this lineup it not just awe-inspiring, it’s a whole lot awe-some!

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes S 63 AMG

With the amount of buzz already generated by the soon-to-be-released ’14 CLA-Class later this month, I’m beyond excited about the GLA crossover and the new markets Mercedes-Benz is bridging. You know the old saying, “This ain’t your daddy’s Benz” – well, with nearly 20 years experience with the brand, I say, they’re absolutely right. Mercedes-Benz is poised to set the market on fire with their new releases catered to satisfying the thirst of a new demographic – the so-called “millennials.” But worry not, Gen Y and Baby Boomers, the greatest brand and car company in the world has something for everyone.

From now through September 22, I’ll be waiting by my computer, giddy as a kid on Christmas morning, regularly checking updates from the show. What’s that? I have a dealership to run? All in a day’s work, my friends. All in a day’s work.

2014 S 63 AMG On Display in Frankfurt

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon

The new S 63 AMG is stealing the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the most powerful high-performance saloon and most dynamic S-Class ever. At the heart of the new S63 AMG is the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 900 Nm of torque.

And, according to Dr. Schmidt: “Concerns about the environment are not an issue at all. The 5.5-litre V8 biturbo has more power but consumes around one litre less than its predecessor.”  Through systematic lightweight design, the S 63 AMG weighs in at up to 100 kilogrammes less than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is 10.1 to 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The new S 63 AMG is also optionally available for the first time with the performance-oriented AMG 4-MATIC all-wheel drive.

AMG Lightweight Performance: up to 220 pounds lighter than before

Systematic implementation of the AMG Lightweight Performance strategy reduces the weight of the S63 AMG 4MATIC by up to 220 pounds compared to the predecessor model. This weight saving was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimized AMG high-performance two-piece brake system. Furthermore, the entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminum. Installing a spare wheel recess made of carbon fiber, a material used in Formula 1, reduces the weight by a further 9 pounds. The S63 AMG 4MATIC also leads the way when it comes to power-to-weight ratio, boasting a figure of 7.9 lbs/hp, resulting in effortlessly
superior performance. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds and the top speed is 186 mph (electronically limited).

In terms of maximum output and fuel consumption, the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine remains the most efficient series-produced V8 engine of all. With an output of 577 hp and a torque of 664 lb-ft, the AMG eight-cylinder motor from the M157 engine family outperforms all comparable engines. The fuel consumption of the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is lower than its predecessor, even though the engine output has been increased by 49 hp.

Technical highlights of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine:

  • Direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors
  • Twin turbocharging
  • All-aluminum crankcase
  • Four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment
  • Air-to-water intercooler
  • Efficient cooling of engine oil, engine water and transmission oil
  • Lightweight composite oil pan
  • Alternator management
  • ECO Start/Stop function

AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps

The AMG sports exhaust system in the S63 AMG 4MATIC has automatic logic controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers. When the transmission is in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) mode, the flaps remain closed in most situations, in which case the eight-cylinder biturbo engine’s sound is more understated – perfect for long trips and a comfortable ride in the rear. In “S” (Sport) and
“M” (Manual) modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and quicker, especially if the driver prefers an agressive driving style. The result is an even fuller, emotional, hallmark AMG engine sound.

Engine production at AMG

Like all AMG engines, the eight-cylinder biturbo engine for the 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is assembled by hand at AMG, observing the highest levels of craftsmanship. Highly qualified engine builders assemble the M 157 in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine badge bearing the engine builder’s signature also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 pounds

Following the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is the second AMG high-performance model to replace the conventional starter battery with a lithium-ion battery. The new technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept: with a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 pounds. The high-performance battery is relatively resilient in cold temperatures and has compact dimensions. The S63 AMG 4MATIC is the world’s first volume-produced vehicle with this type of battery concept.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. The three transmission modes – “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual) – provide each driver with a personal set-up. In comfort-oriented “C” mode the ECO Start/Stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission
characteristics with comfort-oriented gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear, for ensured comfort and efficiency.

In the “S” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO Start/Stop function is deactivated. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster and acoustically more emotional gearshifts.

Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

The standard performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes the engine torque so that 33 percent goes to the front axle and 67 percent is sent to the rear axle. The rear-biased power distribution provides for the signature AMG high-performance driving dynamics and enjoyment as well as boosting acceleration from a standing start. The all-wheel drive likewise enhances driving safety on wet or wintry road surfaces (winter tires are required for winter conditions). Optimum traction is provided by a multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 37 lb-ft, which exploits the maximum friction connection potential of all four wheels.

The technical basis for the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is provided by a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. This transfer case is integrated compactly into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission and requires no additional installation space. The torque is transmitted from the power take-off via a propeller shaft to the front axle. Power transmission from the front axle differential to the front-left drive shaft
is effected via an intermediate shaft which passes through an encapsulated shaft duct in the engine oil pan. The compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low level of additional weight for the all-wheel drive system of only 154 pounds, which also helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist as standard. A targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel results in defined cornering of the vehicle and ensures greater agility when taking corners at high speed. The vectoring of torque helps reduce understeer when turning into corners.

AIRMATIC Suspension

The 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG ADAPTIVE sports suspension. The full air suspension system AIRMATIC is equipped with the Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS. One new feature is the continuous damping adjustment, which can be controlled independently in the compression stage and rebound stage. It allows better adaptation to the driving and road-surface
conditions. “Comfort” and “Sport” suspension modes can be selected at the push of a button. Specific front axle kinematics – including higher camber, a larger anti-roll bar and a stiffer subframe carrier on the rear axle – have been developed exclusively for the S63 AMG 4MATIC. These measures optimize the vehicle’s agility when driving dynamically. With the redesigned front axle and the special all-wheel-drive set-up, the S63 AMG 4MATIC represents a new dimension in its segment when it comes to driving dynamics.

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with a variable steering ratio is the perfect complement as it greatly enhances vehicle handling and agility whilst maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the AMG speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, on the other hand, the driver feels stiff steering assistance – which tends to result in better road feel. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback and steering precision.

AMG light-alloy wheels based on systematic lightweight construction

The S63 AMG 4MATIC is available with AMG forged light-alloy wheels. This design reduces weight while increasing strength and lowers the unsprung masses, resulting in advantages in terms of handling and spring/damper element response. In the standard specification, the S63 AMG 4MATIC is fitted with AMG light-alloy wheels – size 8.5×19 at the front and 9.5×19 at the rear with 255/45 R 19 and 285/40 R 19 tires respectively.

Optional extras include AMG forged light-alloy wheels, with size 8.5×20 at the front and 9.5×20 at the rear paired with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires respectively. The AMG light-alloy wheels feature a high-quality, removeable and fully integrated wheel bolt cover made of forged metal. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport.

AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece brake system as an option for the first time

Extremely short stopping distances and immediate deceleration are a given for any AMG high-performance car. And the new S63 AMG 4MATIC is no exception as it is equipped with a weight-optimized, fade-resistant AMG highperformance two-piece brake system. An AMG ceramic high-performance twopiece brake system is available as an option for the first time. The more than 20
percent lighter design ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility and ride comfort. In addition to this, the system has a longer service life, is more resistant to corrosion and displays higher thermal stability. The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system has front brake discs with a diameter of 16.5 inches and is recognizable by the “AMG
Carbon Ceramic” logo on the bronze painted brake calipers.

Design: Confidence and exclusivity fused with sensuous forms

Powerful and exclusive, dramatic and prestigious – the new S63 AMG 4MATIC also makes a visual impression. The high-performance sedan’s design is defined by the impressive blend of hallmark Mercedes sensual forms, classic architecture and a sleek silhouette with classic AMG design features. A large, upright and distinctly three-dimensional radiator grille underlines the special status of the S-Class – with an exciting contrast provided by the front apron with three large air dams. The front apron with the grille painted in high-gloss black displays the stylized “A” that is a hallmark of AMG vehicles and emphasizes the exclusivity and power of the S63 AMG 4MATIC. Flics in highgloss black on the side air intakes optimize the flow of air to the cooling
modules – a design that is a familiar sight in motorsport. The threedimensional front splitter in silver shadow reduces lift.

Side sill panels with three-dimensional inserts in silver shadow make the vehicle appear closer to the road and create an aggressive flow along the side with the brand’s hallmark “Dropping Line”. Large light-alloy wheels are another trademark AMG feature: they afford a clear view of the AMG highperformance brake system. “V8 BITURBO” lettering in new, contemporary typography on the front fenders identifies the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model. This new lettering also appears in the “S63 AMG” model designation on the trunk lid. The design is drawn to a powerful conclusion by the black diffuser insert with trim in silver shadow and the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with internal dynamic exhaust flaps.

Interior: eye-catching appointments, design and quality

Like the exterior design, the S63 AMG 4MATIC interior is a sophisticated combination of the athletic atmosphere of a true AMG automobile with classic Mercedes values such as improved interior dimensions, new control logic, new ergonomic touches, ease of use, safety, appeal and aesthetics. The newly developed AMG sports seats with electric adjustment, Memory function and
seat heating offer the driver and front passenger more lateral support. Fine nappa leather in AMG V8 design with lavish perforations and AMG badges in the front and rear seat backrests create an exquisite and luxurious atmosphere on board. Special touches include the embossed emblem on the armrest of the front center console and the high-quality analog clock in IWC design, which for
the first time features three-dimensional, milled metal hands and metal appliqués on the dial.

The AMG sports steering wheel with its distinctively contoured rim, perforated leather in the grip area and aluminum shift paddles allows perfect vehicle control. Another feature displaying the hallmark AMG look is the highresolution TFT color display as an AMG instrument cluster with two animated round dials: in addition to the AMG-specific lettering and the needles in red/silver, further distinctive design features include the AMG logo in the speedometer with 200 mph scale (left) and the “V8 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter (right).

Selecting “Warm up” in the AMG main menu brings up two round dials indicating the engine oil and transmission oil temperatures. Vehicle configuration, for example activation of a certain transmission and suspension mode, is manipulated through the AMG main menu “Setup” by means of buttons on the center console. An S63 AMG 4MATIC pictogram on the TFT display between the speedo and rev counter gives the driver visual feedback. The upper section of the display contains a permanent gear indicator and, when manual transmission mode “M” is selected, also an upshift recommendation. At the lower edge, the activated transmission mode, the ESP® mode and the suspension set-up are displayed.

Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6 by Brabus Revealed at 2013 IAA

Introduced today at the 2013 IAA, the BRABUS B63S - 700 6x6 is based on the Mercedes G 63 AMG 6x6.

Two extra wheels, extreme power on tap and a luxurious interior like only Brabus can offer – It doesn’t get much better than this. Introduced today at the 2013 IAA, the BRABUS B63S – 700 6×6 is based on the Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6.

Click here or on any photo to go directly to the photo gallery to see the six-wheeler in all its glory.

BRABUS B63S - 700 6x6 Mercedes G 63 AMG

BRABUS B63S – 700 6×6

BRABUS lends the most exclusive G-Class of all times even more punch: powered by a 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo with BRABUS B63S – 700 engine tuning producing 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp), the six-wheel drive powerhouse weighing in at around four tons sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.4 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 160 km/h (100 mph) due to the 37-inch off-road tires.

As a contrast to the striking black, chrome and carbon-fiber BRABUS exterior, the BRABUS interior designers picked a fiery red Mastik leather/Alcantara interior.

The Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6 built in small-series production comes normally with a 5.5-liter eight-cylinder four-valve Biturbo engine producing 400 kW / 544 hp (536 bhp). BRABUS can draw upon the world’s most extensive engine tuning program for Mercedes-Benz automobiles in the case of this special model as well.

BRABUS B63S - 700 6x6 Mercedes G 63 AMG

BRABUS B63S – 700 6×6 Mercedes G 63 AMG

The BRABUS B63S – 700 performance kit, which is also available for all other current Mercedes-Benz 63 AMG SUVs, unleashes the inherent power slumbering in the turbocharged V8 engine. To realize the enormous power increase by 115 kW / 156 hp (154 bhp) the peripherals of the V8 are modified extensively.

The production turbochargers are replaced by two special BRABUS turbochargers with larger compressor unit, which produce a higher boost pressure. BRABUS Gold Heat Reflection sheathing for the intake and charge-air pipes further lower the charge-air temperature. This measure contributes equally to the power yield and to the flawless durability, which also manifests itself in the BRABUS Tuning Warranty of three years, up to 100,000 kilometers/62,000 miles (see BRABUS Warranty Terms and Conditions, updated July 2013) that is unparalleled in the industry.

In addition, special high-performance metal catalysts with 75-mm (2.9 in.) downpipes are installed to lower the back pressure. The stainless-steel sport exhaust system with controlled butterfly valve was custom-developed for the G 63 6×6 AMG and offers both optimized power yield and active control of the exhaust note. Drivers can select at the push of a button between the subtle “Coming Home” mode and a markedly potent exhaust note in the “Sport” position. The BRABUS exhaust system also puts its visual stamp on both sides of the vehicles with two striking dual sidepipes.

Specially calibrated BRABUS mapping for the engine management system coordinates the perfect interaction of all high-performance components while also ensuring compliance with the stringent EURO V emission standards.

BRABUS B63S - 700 6x6 Mercedes G 63 AMG Wheel

BRABUS B63S – 700 6×6 Mercedes G 63 AMG

With these major modifications the B63S – 700 engine, which is also available for the G 63 AMG 4×4 model, produces 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) at a low 5,300 rpm. The BRABUS engine also delivers a much heftier torque: between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm the engine sends a massive 960 Nm (708 lb-ft) of torque instead of the standard 760 Nm (561 lb-ft) to the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. This is complemented by special BRABUS aluminum shift paddles that facilitate manual gearshifts from the multifunction steering wheel of the G-Class. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner MOTUL.

Thus equipped the six-wheeled heavyweight turns in an acceleration performance that can measure up to full-blooded sports cars. 7.4 seconds for 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) are absolute tops for a vehicle weighing in at just less than four tons. The heavy-duty off-road tires the 6×6 is equipped with necessitate limiting the top speed to 160 km/h (100 mph).

BRABUS also gives the 6×6 a strategic visual upgrade. The imposing nature of the front is further strengthened by purposeful modifications. The BRABUS front spoiler edges attach to the production fascia and are combined with an additional molding below the special radiator grille with integrated BRABUS logo. The BRABUS carbon-fiber hood scoop adds another striking highlight. The mirror-polished BRABUS underride guard provides an interesting contrast to the all-black paintwork.

The innovative BRABUS lighting concept sets further visual signals. It includes dark-tinted LED lights integrated into the front spoiler edges. Even more dominant are the black BRABUS xenon headlights and daytime running lights with integrated turn-signal function for all current models of the venerable off-roader. The now obsolete production turn signals on top of the fenders are replaced with clear-coated matt carbon-fiber covers. In conjunction with the matt carbon-fiber structure on the hood and the carbon-fiber shells for the exterior mirrors they round out the belligerent 6×6 look to full effect.

BRABUS B63S - 700 6x6 Mercedes G 63 AMG Interior

BRABUS B63S – 700 6×6 Mercedes G 63 AMG

Another focus of the BRABUS refinement for the mightiest G model ever is in the cockpit. The company upholstery shop meticulously crafted an exclusive BRABUS fine leather ambiance from a combination of fiery red and black leather and Alcantara.

The great love of detail and the quality of the upholsterers’ craftsmanship is evident in the pinpoint precision of the topstitching of the leather floor and the headliner. The passengers are welcomed by stainless-steel scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo. The BRABUS interior designers add some pronounced accents with aluminum components such as pedals and door-lock pins.

The new engine is based on the latest Mercedes 63 AMG eight-cylinder four-valve engine and is capable of producing 625 kW / 850 hp (838 bhp) and reaching a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

For the increase in displacement to 5,912 cc (361 cu. in.) the Brabus motor engineers brought their entire know-how amassed in the more than 35 years of the company’s history to bear. Numerous engine components had to be newly developed and the engine block, cylinders and cylinder heads had to be extensively re-machined in the company engine-building shop.

Increasing the eight cylinder bores to 99 millimeters (3.89 in.) allows the use of special forged pistons with modified surface contours to achieve an even more efficient combustion. They are connected by billet piston rods to the precision-balanced billet crankshaft with a stroke of 96 mm (3.77 in.).

The two special Brabus turbochargers with larger compressor unit and modified exhaust manifolds are of course also a major factor in the enormous increase in power by 195 kW / 265 hp (261 bhp) over the stock engine. Other performance-enhancing upgrades on the exhaust side are the metal catalysts with 75-millimeter-thick (2.95 in.) downpipes and the Brabus stainless-steel sport exhaust whose pipe connectors have a diameter of 76 millimeters (3 in.).

The Brabus installations on the intake side are immediately apparent upon opening the hood: in addition to the fiery-red Brabus design accents on the engine, the Brabus Gold Heat Reflection sheathing for the intake and charge-air tubes right away catches the eye. This measure also contributes to the high-performance experience provided by this engine, as does the newly designed Brabus 850 intake manifold for the eight-cylinder four-valve engine. It includes a larger air filter box with enlarged intake cross section, which gets its air supply via a special air duct in the hood. Also part of the package is the carbon-fiber intake pipe with larger diameter, which was positioned behind the new Brabus fascia directly exposed to the relative wind.

Special mapping for the engine management system programmed on the Brabus high-tech engine test rigs and during road tests coordinate all high-performance components perfectly. This benefits not only the gigantic power yield, but also the outstanding throttle response and refinement of the engine across the entire rev range.

The performance data of the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo high-capacity engine are correspondingly impressive: the V8 produces its peak power of 625 kW / 850 hp (838 bhp) at a low 5,400 rpm U/min. The equally potent peak torque of 1,450 Nm (1,069 lb-ft) is limited in the car to 1,150 Nm (848 lb-ft) to protect the powertrain as a whole. It is available steadily on a plateau between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. Brabus exclusively uses high-performance lubricants from technology partner MOTUL. A Brabus limited-slip differential with a locking rate of 40 percent is available as an option.

In conjunction with the modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission the Brabus 850 “iBusiness” delivers a performance only attained by a very few full-blooded and significantly lighter sports cars. Sprinting from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds is just as unrivalled in this class of vehicles as is the electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). The transmission either sorts the gears automatically or allows drivers to shift manually using the Brabus aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel.

This unique driving sensation is accompanied by an exhaust note that can be either subtle or thrilling. The Brabus sport exhaust system with controlled butterfly valve offers drivers the option to actively control the exhaust note at the push of a button on the steering wheel. It determines whether the luxury sedan operates in a subtle and quiet “Coming Home” mode or announces its V8 power full-throated to the world in the “Sport” position to the enjoyment of the driver.

It goes without saying that Brabus performance kits are available for all Mercedes S-Class engines. The plug-and-play Brabus B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI performance kit for the 4.7-liter eight-cylinder Biturbo engine of the S 500 uses special mapping for injection and ignition as well as a moderate increase in boost pressure to bump the power output by 65 horsepower.

After the conversion the engine’s power output jumps from 335 kW / 455 hp (449 bhp) to 382 kW / 520 hp (512 bhp) and peak torque grows to 820 Nm (605 lb-ft). This propels the four-door car from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds. The Brabus Vmax unit that is part of the engine tuning allows limiting the top speed electronically to 250, 275 or 300 km/h (155, 171 or 186 mph).

Brabus is one of the pioneers in developing innovative, functional multimedia systems that are stylishly integrated into the automobile. The 1.0 generation of the Brabus “iBusiness” concept building on the Apple iPad was presented in the Mercedes S-Class of the W/V 221 model series in 2010.

Now, several evolutionary stages and one vehicle generation later, the new Brabus 850 “iBusiness” celebrates its world debut. In the refined ambiance of a Brabus fine leather interior crafted to perfection down to the last detail the passengers have the latest generation of Apple computer technology for global communications and entertainment at their disposal.

The Brabus “iBusiness” multimedia system incorporates an iPad mini tablet into the rear compartment. To this end the Brabus designer developed a custom center console, which is installed between the two individual seats in the rear, and is equipped with a docking station. The docking station not only secures the table computer safely in place when not in use, it also recharges the computer’s battery.

The iPad mini is not only for communication with the outside world. The integration of the “iBusiness” concept into the vehicle’s on-board electronics also allows all functions of the S-Class COMAND system to be controlled from the iPad mini.

Of course there is also a special Brabus app for iPad, iPhone and iPod. This software is part of the state-of-the-art communications concept of the luxury sedan as well.

A 15.2-inch color TFT display with an aspect ratio of 16:9 serves as the central monitor for the iPad minis and the other devices of the multimedia equipment. The electrically deployed monitor is integrated elegantly into the headliner made from the finest leather. At night the headliner can be illuminated by a multitude of fiber-optic lights to resemble a starry sky. In addition, the standard screens on the back of the front head restraints can be used to watch TV via DVBT or other programming sources.

High-speed USB 3.0 ports integrated into the rear compartment allow connecting additional devices such as a digital camera to the Mac mini. The Brabus 850 “iBusiness” uses state-of-the-art wireless technology to connect to the internet.

The music comes from an Apple iPod touch of the latest generation. With 64 gigabytes of memory it offers enough storage capacity for more than 14,000 tracks. The sound is reproduced by the sound system of the S-Class.

The perfectly finished Brabus fine leather interior can be crafted in the company upholstery shop in any desired color and in any upholstery design from high-end leathers and Alcantara. The selection of wood and carbon-fiber inlays in virtually any desired color and with a variety of surface finishes is just as extensive.

At the extremely high speeds the Brabus 850 “iBusiness” effortlessly attains the aerodynamic properties are of utmost importance. To minimize negative lift on the front and rear axle while creating an optimal balance the Brabus designers have developed a body conversion kit with sporty and elegant style. The components are manufactured in OEM quality from high-end PUR plastics and carbon fiber, and lend the luxury sedan a dynamic visual upgrade and optimize aerodynamic efficiency.

The Brabus front fascia replaces the production bumper in its entirety. It captivates not only with its striking looks that includes large stylishly integrated air scoops that optimize the supply of cooling air for the radiators, engine and front brakes. Its shape was optimized in the wind tunnel and consequently also reduces negative lift on the front axle, which plays a role in the further improved handling stability at high speeds.

The side of the each front fender is upgraded with a Brabus design element made from clear-coated carbon fiber, with a choice of matt or high-sheen finish. The integrated Brabus logo is optionally available in a backlit version whose illumination is activated by operating the remote control or by pulling on a door handle.

At the same time the LED lights integrated into the underside of the Brabus rocker panels also light up. The underfloor lighting makes approaching the car at night safer and helps to avoid stepping into a pothole or puddle.

The Brabus aerodynamic-enhancement concept was designed for all current S-Class models with short or long wheelbase. It is rounded out by the Brabus rear separation edge, which is also available in a version made from clear-coated carbon fiber, and the rear fascia with integrated diffuser and tailor-made cutouts for the Brabus sport exhaust system.

Also contributing to the striking designer look and the even more dynamic and safer handling of the Mercedes S-Class are the tailor-made Brabus Monoblock alloy wheels with diameters of 19, 20, 21 or even 22 inches.

Mercedes Brabus S-Class iBusiness Wheel

Mercedes Brabus S-Class iBusiness Wheel

Forged Brabus “PLATINUM EDITION” wheels in size 9Jx21 on the front axle and size 10.5Jx21 wheels in the rear are available as a 21-inch tire/wheel combination. Customers can choose from three different designs: mirror-finished Monoblock VI wheels with six double spokes, Monoblock F cross-spoke wheels or the new Monoblock R wheels where the spoke pairs are arranged in two different plains. Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA high-performance tires in sizes 255/35 ZR 21 in the front and 295/30 ZR 21 on the rear axle were selected as the optimal tires.

A Brabus 22-inch tire/wheel combination for the S-Class celebrates its world debut at the 2013 IAA. The Brabus Monoblock G “Platinum Edition” forged wheels feature a combination of size 9Jx22 wheels and size 255/30 ZR 22 tires on the front axle with size 10Jx22 wheels and size 295/25 ZR 22 tires in back, and make full use of the available space below the wheel arches.

To further enhance the high level of dynamic handling of the high-performance luxury sedan Brabus has developed a special control module for the air suspension of the S-Class. It lowers the ride height of the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo “iBusiness” by some 15 millimeters (0.6 in.) without impairing the outstanding ride comfort.

Maximum stopping power is even more important than exceptional acceleration and thus the Brabus high-performance braking system is part of the technical highlights of this vehicle. It features anthracite-colored six-piston aluminum fixed calipers with golden Brabus logo and vented carbon-ceramic discs measuring 380 x 34 millimeters (14.9 x 1.3 in.) on the front axle. The carbon-ceramic discs were developed in cooperation with brake specialist Brembo, and are manufactured from an entirely new material. The new structure of the disc and the material drastically increases thermal diffusivity, resulting in a much higher performance of the braking system compared with conventional systems.

The Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo “iBusiness” is built to order. The multimedia system and all other Brabus tuning components are available for all current S-Class models. Brabus engine tuning is also available for all other engine variants.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Renderings

Renderings of the next-generation S-Class Coupe make their way onto the web

For those of you eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new S-Class Coupe, new design sketches have been revealed showing some design insight as to what we can expect from the luxury model.  There’s no word on whether they’re official Mercedes renderings, but judging from past design sketches there’s a good chance they are.

As you’ll see in the photos, the design is significantly more sporty than that of its four door counterpart, with gorgeous new sloping roof line, new tail lights, and a totally redesigned front fascia.  And while design sketches typically tend to be more masculine than the final production car, from the looks of it, this may be the sportiest S-Class Coupe/CL-Class to date.

We’ll keep you posted as new details of the forthcoming S-Class Coupe are revealed in advance of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut (just a few days away); in the meantime, check out more photos of the S-Class Coupe in the gallery below.

Mercedes-Benz Frankfurt Motor Show Premieres

Two weeks from now, the automotive companies will descend on the city of Frankfurt for the IAA

Two weeks from now, the automotive companies will descend and enthusiest around the world will be focused on one spot, the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt – one of the most important venues for Mercedes-Benz world premières. In September 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 600 (W 100) ushered in a new time in motoring, setting benchmarks in technical features, safety, comfort, size, and power. Twenty years later, in 1983, Mercedes presented to the world the Mercedes-Benz 190 2.3-16 – A top of the line saloon that opened up the sport and compact vehicle segment for Mercedes.

Largest German motor show: from Berlin to Frankfurt

The International Motor Show was initially held in Berlin. Its origins can be traced back to the year 1897 when the Middle European Motor Car Club organised the “Automobil-Revue” show. These relatively small beginnings eventually evolved into the leading international trade show for automotive technology.

The Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) from Stuttgart with its Mercedes brand and Benz & Cie. from Mannheim were among the first regular guests at the Berlin motor shows. After both companies established an interest group in 1924, they were present with a joint exhibition stand for the first time in 1925. As a result of the merger to form Daimler-Benz AG in 1926, the vehicles of the new Mercedes-Benz brand lured visitors to the trade show stand – according to a report in the “Hamburger Nachrichten” newspaper the “arguably most besieged” exhibit of the show.

It was difficult to continue the trade show successes of the first third of the century after the end of Second World War. The first motor show with true international character did not take place again in Germany until April 1951. It was no longer held in Berlin, but in Frankfurt on the Main. The city is also home to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which organises the IAA.

Among the highlights of the first Frankfurt IAA in April 1951 were two premières from Mercedes-Benz: the Stuttgart-based brand introduced its new Mercedes-Benz 220 (W 187) premium-class saloon and the Mercedes-Benz 300 (W 186) representational vehicle. Both automobiles are counted among the forerunners of today’s S-Class.
