Call me uncultured, but unless you’re using the tissue paper and tape to cover up dents, scratches or rust, or using it to camouflage a new model, I’m not entirely sure why you would do this to a car.  But, in fairness, art is meant to evoke emotion and that it does, for me, it brings back memories of my Yo MTV Raps days.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG – Design and Equipment

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG offers exterior and interior style elements of the SLS AMG Roadster

Powerful, dynamic and unmistakable – the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG’s unique high-tech package and high performance levels are already apparent even when the vehicle is at a standstill. Visually, it is clear that the top-of-the-range V8 SLK model has been inspired by the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster: the wide radiator grille with large, centrally-positioned star and wing-shaped slats, as well the vent grille with chrome fins in the front wings, are all reminiscent of the super sports car. At the same time, both style elements also hark back to the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957.

The unique AMG bodystyling comprises a distinctive front apron with a lower cross strut painted in a high-gloss black finish. Large air inlets help to ensure a reliable air flow over cooling areas. The outer cooling-air openings also house the AMG-specific LED‑daytime driving lights. A lasting impression is also left by the clear glass headlamps with their darkened reflectors. The optional Intelligent Light System provides five lighting functions (cornering light function, country mode, motorway mode, active light function and enhanced fog lamps), which are activated depending on the driving conditions. When this is fitted, the main headlamps are twin-tube units, and the indicators and position lights feature LED technology.

When viewed from the side, the “V8 AMG” lettering beneath the air vent is immediately apparent. Dynamically designed AMG light-alloy wheels, featuring a five-spoke design and painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, also provide an additional sporty highlight. Two additional design variants are also available optionally for the SLK 55 AMG from the AMG Performance Studio: four-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, painted either in titanium grey or matt black. Other features of the AMG bodystyling include the distinctively shaped side sill panels, as well as the unique rear apron. With its expressive shape, it highlights the width of the vehicle. The black diffuser insert with three deeply contoured fins also adds to the striking visual appearance, as do the two chrome twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flaps.

Further characteristic AMG features come in the form of the darkened LED bicolour tail lamps, as well as the AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid. Finished in the vehicle body colour, it helps to reduce lift at the rear axle and thus contributes to driving stability, particularly at high speeds.

Interior: quality, precision and style

The dynamic and stylish character continues seamlessly into the interior of the vehicle. Providing an impressive look and feel, the interior of the SLK 55 AMG welcomes its occupants with a sense of precision which is reflected in the workmanship and the high-quality finishes of the materials used. The cockpit too, which has been finished with a great eye for detail, boasts numerous style elements from the SLS AMG Roadster: for example the four air vents, which evoke associations with jet engines, and the centre console which is made of solid, brushed aluminium. Both style elements are integrated harmoniously into the wide dashboard. As an optional extra, the interior can be exclusively enhanced with the addition of an analogue clock, positioned centrally and featuring an IWC design. Steeped in tradition, Swiss watch manufacturer IWC is a cooperation partner of AMG, together with Italian motorcycle brand Ducati.

Also integrated harmoniously into the interior is the AMG instrument cluster featuring a sporty design with two dial-type gauges. It boasts uniquely designed dials with red indicator needles, a 320 km/h graduated scale and also AMG and V8 lettering. Just like other AMG high-performance vehicles, the SLK 55 AMG keeps its driver informed by means of the AMG main menu. Three modes are available: “Warm Up”, “Set Up” and “RACE”. “Warm Up” shows the engine oil and coolant temperatures as well as the current status of the ECO start/stop function. “Set Up” provides information on the current ESP® mode and the transmission mode “C”, “S” or “M”. In “RACE” mode, the RACETIMER becomes available: the driver can use this feature to record lap times when driving on a closed-off race track.

An interior highlight: the AMG Performance steering wheel

The AMG main menu is operated using the multifunction buttons on the AMG Performance steering wheel, which is finished in nappa leather. The specially shaped steering wheel rim features flattened top and bottom sections, as well as grip areas covered in perforated leather to help ensure optimum vehicle control. One particular visual highlight is the metallic trim, surrounding the three-dimensional airbag cover on the three-spoke steering wheel, the lower spoke of which has an open design. Aluminium shift paddles make manual gear changes a pleasure, while the button to configure transmission modes “C”, “S” or “M” is located within easy reach in the centre console.

The AMG sports seats offer high levels of comfort on long journeys and excellent lateral support, and come with a distinctive transverse stitch design as well as AMG badges: the upholstery combination ARTICO man-made leather/black fabric comes as standard, or alternatively the interior of the SLK 55 AMG can be enhanced with sun-reflective nappa leather, Exclusive nappa leather and designo leather. Outstanding occupant safety comes courtesy of the height-adjustable, crash-responsive head restraints which are integrated into the seat backrests.

Innovative optional extras: AIRSCARF and AIRGUIDE

Drivers looking to extend the roadster season can also choose the optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating system. Warm air from vents in the head restraints flows around the head and neck area of the vehicle occupants. To reduce draughts when driving with the top down, the SLK 55 AMG can also be fitted with a draught-stop. This consists of a net in a fixed frame which is mounted between the head restraints. When not in use, it can be stored in the luggage compartment to save space.

A comfortable alternative to the draught-stop is a new pivoting draught-stop, AIRGUIDE. It consists of pivoting transparent plastic layers which are attached to the reverse of the roll-over bars. This is the world’s first draught protection system that enables different comfort levels to be selected for two occupants, as the driver and passenger can individually pivot the units to the centre of the vehicle in a flash, thus taming turbulent air flow from the rear. Advantage: no installation or removal effort required.

Ground-breaking: a choice of two navigation systems

As an alternative to the standard basic Audio 20 CD radio, there is also a choice of the Becker® MAP PILOT entry-level navigation package as well as the COMAND Online system. The Becker® MAP PILOT, which can also be retrofitted, makes a low-cost navigation function available for the entry-level Audio 20 CD radio. Its advantages over aftermarket solutions include integrated operation via the central controls and the Audio 20 display, a concealed location in the glove compartment and updating via an internet portal.

Networked: COMAND Online with internet access

The COMAND Online multimedia system now offers internet access for the first time in the SLK too. Customers can either surf freely on the internet when at a standstill or to a Mercedes-Benz online service while driving; the latter’s pages can be called up particularly quickly and it is simple to operate. The integral services planned include Google™ Local Search and further online services from other suppliers such as the weather. It is also possible to send individual destinations and routes to the vehicle via Google Maps. More Mercedes-Benz online services will be introduced gradually and then all customers will be able to use them.

The high-resolution colour display measures 17.8 cm. Photos can be shown on the large screen and turned over manually, as in a slide show. Where the audio equipment is concerned, too, new types of representation bring a fresh look and more convenient operation. The new Cover Flow function, for instance, sorts the title images of the music albums stored in a carousel-like form, so that the driver can easily leaf through their music collection – even if it is rather on the large side: the memory for compressed audio files (MP3, WMA and AAC formats) now comprises as much as 10 GB. As an option COMAND Online is available with a 6-disc DVD‑changer.

The ultimate in convenience is afforded by the Music Search function, which enables drivers and passengers to search the hard disc, SD memory cards, USB sticks, CDs and DVDs for specific music tracks and artists. The search can be according to various criteria, for instance artist, album or genre. If a name needs to be entered, the software will also tolerate spelling mistakes. The driver is therefore able to devote their full attention to the traffic. As a further advantage, the occupants are able to search all the connected media and devices simultaneously.

Up-to-date maps of Europe are provided without charge for three years

The fast hard-disc navigation system of COMAND Online also has added functions. New features include a 3D display with three-dimensional city views. Also new: routes covered can be recorded and repeated later, specific personal destinations can be imported via an SD card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them a particularly economical variation. Mercedes-Benz customers in Europe receive the current cards for their COMAND Online multimedia system free of charge for three years. Authorised Mercedes-Benz dealers upload the updates for navigation data in 39 European countries into the navigation system when the customer visits their premises.

In Europe COMAND Online also comprises the Speed Limit Assist, which receives its information for traffic sign recognition via a camera and navigation database. COMAND Online also includes the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system for audio, telephone and navigation. The new “One Shot” input for the navigation is particularly convenient, whereby the place and road can be said directly after one another.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG World Premiere

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG is to date the most powerful SLK of all time with 415 hp and maximum torque of 398 lb-ft

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG is to date the most powerful SLK of all time. As we previously reported, its new AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine featuring cylinder shutoff combines the highest level of performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption. The SLK AMG engine offers a peak output of 415 hp and maximum torque of 398 lb-ft, the 2012 SLK55 AMG is positioned to outperform all of its direct competitors. Thanks to the AMG sports suspension with Direct-Steer system, Torque Vectoring Brakes and 3-stage ESP, as well as the AMG high-performance braking system, high performance driving is guaranteed every time you get behind the wheel. The 2012 SLK55 AMG will arrive in U.S. showrooms in early 2012.

Forming part of the third-generation of the SLK launched in June, the new AMG model catches the eye at first glance: distinctive AMG light-alloy wheels, exclusive AMG body styling with AMG spoiler lip and two chrome-plated twin tailpipes at the rear complement the classic roadster proportions, while adding a distinct athletic touch. The expressive design of the 2012 SLK55 AMG is both eye-catching and unmistakable.

The SLK55 AMG is the perfect embodiment of the new AMG brand claim of “Driving Performance”: in the compact high-performance Roadster segment there is nothing to compare to its combination of tangible driving dynamics, superior sportiness, unique high-technology and low fuel consumption. Helping to set new fuel efficiency standards for V8’s, the 5.5 liter engine combines low consumption figures with superior power delivery and the typical exhaust growl which only a large-displacement eight-cylinder engine can produce.

In line with its “AMG Performance 2015” strategy, the new V8 engine continues to reduce both the fuel consumption and emissions of new models over the next few years – while reaching new heights with the central brand claim of “Driving Performance”. At the same time, AMG is also demonstrating its social responsibility with the M152 engine.

New naturally aspirated eight-cylinder closely related to the V8 biturbo

The new M152 is based on the AMG M157 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine presented in 2010, which powers the E63 AMG, CLS63 AMG, S63 AMG and CL63 AMG. Numerous design features are identical, such as the displacement, bore/stroke, distance between cylinders, ECO stop/start system and direct gasoline injection technology. Distinguishing features versus the M157 include the new intake air ducting, new cylinder heads, the modified valve drive, an adapted oil supply system and an optimized crankcase.

Exclusive combination of advanced technologies

The high-tech M152 motor dazzles with a combination of advanced technologies which is unequalled anywhere in the world. No other gasoline engine features direct injection at a pressure of 2,900 psi, spray-guided combustion and piezo injectors, all in conjunction with map-controlled cylinder shut-off, an all-aluminum crankcase with “spectacle” honing, fourvalve technology with continuous camshaft adjustment, a high compression ratio of 12.6 : 1, a stop/start system and generator management – while revving to a maximum speed of over 7,000 rpm. All of these features lead to high thermodynamic efficiency which is essential for high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions. Using a large-displacement, naturally-aspirated eight-cylinder engine with cylinder shut-off resolves the trade-off between high output/torque delivery and low fuel consumption figures.

AMG Cylinder Management

The AMG Cylinder Management cylinder shut-off system – developed completely by Mercedes-AMG – significantly improves efficiency: cylinders two, three, five and eight are cut off under partial load, which lowers fuel consumption considerably. In similar form, this technology is also used in the 750-hp V8 engines used in Formula 1. As efficiency also plays a major role at the pinnacle of motor racing, two or four of the eight cylinders are cut off e.g. when cornering at slow speed, during Safety Car laps or for pit stops.

The cylinder shut-off function is available over a wide engine speed range from 800 to 3,600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode “C” – Controlled Efficiency. The AMG main menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver whether cylinder shut-off is active, and whether the engine is currently running in four or eight-cylinder mode. No less than 170 lb-ft of torque is still available in four-cylinder mode – enough power to ensure plenty of acceleration in most driving situations. As soon as the driver has a need for more power and leaves the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are activated. The switch from four to eight-cylinder operation is immediate and imperceptible, leading to no loss of occupant comfort. At an engine speed of 3,600 rpm the activation process takes no more than 30 milliseconds.

Valves closed, fuel delivery and ignition deactivated

Cylinder shut-off is made possible by the intelligent engine management system, with 16 hydraulically compensating actuators and a sophisticated oil supply system in the cylinder head. The compensating actuators are integrated into the cylinder head, and keep the intake and exhaust valves of cylinders two, three, five and eight closed when cylinder shut-off is active. At the same time their fuel supply and ignition are deactivated. This not only enables the loadchange losses of the four deactivated cylinders to be reduced, but also increases the efficiency of the four remaining cylinders. This is because the operating point is transferred to the higher load range. The actuators are compact and lightweight, allowing taut valve train operation and engine speeds up to 7,200 rpm.

All-aluminum crankcase with Silitec cylinder liners

The crankcase of the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine features a diecast allaluminum construction. The low (dry) engine weight of just 412 lbs is the result of uncompromising lightweight construction methods. The bearing covers for the main crankshaft bearings are grey cast iron, and are bolted to the crankcase, as well as on the sides, for high rigidity.

The piston rings are carbon-coated to minimize internal friction and reduce wear. Cast-in Silitec cylinder liners ensure low friction for the eight pistons. Unique “Spectacle” honing is another measure to reduce friction and therefore fuel consumption: in this sophisticated and complex process, the cylinder liners receive their mechanical surface treatment when already bolted in place. As honing would no longer be possible with the cylinder head installed, a jig resembling spectacles is bolted to the crankcase. The cylinder liners distort as if the cylinder head were in place, and are only then given their mechanical surface treatment. As a result, any static distortion of the cylinder liners caused by tightening the cylinder head bolts can be completely eliminated.

Other measures to optimize efficiency:

  • weight-optimized cast aluminum pistons with special piston skirt coating
  • special ventilation holes in the crankcase
  • oil pump with electrically controlled pressure stage
  • separate oil pump for cylinder shut-off as a controllable, low-friction vane cell pump
  • engine cooling using especially efficient cross-flow principle
  • electronically controlled fuel pressure, fully variable and demand-related between 1,450 and 2,900 psi

The forged crankshaft of high-grade 38MnS6BY steel alloy rotates in five main bearings, has eight counterweights and has been optimized with respect to torsional rigidity, inertia, low rotating masses and a long operating life. A twomass viscous damper mounted at the front reliably eliminates vibrations. Each connecting rod journal on the crankshaft carries two forged, cracked connecting rods.

Four-valve technology with variable camshaft adjustment

Perfect charging of the combustion chambers is provided by large intake and exhaust valves, four per cylinder. The exhaust valves, which are subject to high thermal loads, are hollow and sodium-cooled. Four overhead camshafts operate the 32 valves via low-maintenance, low-friction cam followers. The infinitely variable camshaft adjustment within a range of 40 degrees on the intake and exhaust sides adapts to engine load and engine speed, leading to high output and torque values. This also provides consistent idling at a low speed. Depending on the engine speed, valve overlap can be varied for the best possible fuel/air supply to the combustion chambers and efficient removal of the exhaust gases. The variable camshaft adjustment is carried out hydraulically via four pivoting actuators. These are electromagnetically activated and controlled by the engine control unit. The camshafts are driven by three high-performance silent chains, which have considerable advantages in terms of noise comfort compared with cylinder roller chains.

Controlled Efficiency stop/start function as standard

The Controlled Efficiency stop/start function further contributes to the low fuel consumption. This system is standard equipment on the SLK55 AMG and active in the fuel economy transmission mode “C”. Once the driver brakes to a stop e.g. at a red traffic light, the V8 engine is automatically switched off. Once the brake pedal is released or the accelerator is depressed, the engine is immediately restarted and the car is able to move off quickly. Intelligent technology provides a comfortable and immediate starting procedure: a crankshaft sensor recognizes the direction of rotation and registers the resting position of all eight pistons. For an automatic engine start, the cylinder with the most favorable piston position receives an injection of fuel into its combustion chamber. The precise piezo-electric injectors greatly assist this process, as they make especially fast starts possible. The M152 always starts in eight-cylinder operation.

A framed “ECO” symbol in the AMG main menu shows the driver that the Controlled Efficiency stop/start function is active. When cylinder shut-off is active, the driver is informed by the symbol “ECO4”, while “ECO8” stands for eight-cylinder operation. In the two more performance-oriented driving modes “S” (Sport) and “M” (Manual), the stop/start function is always deactivated. If required, the driver can also switch it off while in “C” mode as well. In this case neither a “stop/start” nor an “ECO” symbol appears.

Alternator management helps to save fuel

An alternator management system makes a further contribution to fuel economy: whenever the V8 engine is in overrun or when braking, kinetic energy is used to charge the battery rather than wasted as heat. In all other operating modes a combination of onboard network and alternator management enables the electrical system to be kept at a low voltage.

New AMG sports exhaust system with integrated exhaust flaps

AMG is premiering a new sports exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap on each side. This technology resolves the trade off between an emotional exhaust note during spirited driving and a more discreet engine sound in the partial load range. The main focus of the sound design was to achieve a perfect synthesis of perceptible performance and the long-distance comfort that is a hallmark of Mercedes.

Each of the two rear silencers has a flap which is variably activated on a logiccontrolled basis depending on the driver’s power requirement and the engine speed. At low loads and engine speeds below 2,000 rpm the flaps remain closed. This causes the exhaust gases to cover a longer distance and flow through an additional damping element, so that the engine sound is pleasantly subdued and disruptive frequencies are effectively suppressed – resulting in a mellow tone especially in four-cylinder operation when cylinder shut-off is active.

When the driver accelerates, the flaps open at an angle of 15, then 30 and up to 50 degrees so that some of the exhaust gases cover a short distance while the remaining follow the longer, acoustically dampened path producing a sonorous engine note. Under full load at higher engine speeds in eight-cylinder mode, both flaps are fully opened so that the occupants are able to enjoy the distinct muscular sound typical of an AMG V8. This emphasizes the performance potential of the 415 hp naturally aspirated AMG eight-cylinder engine.

The two-pipe AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes has a pipe diameter of 2.56 inches from the manifolds to the pre-silencer. The diameter is reduced to 2.36 inches from the pre-silencer to the rear silencers.

Effective emissions technology with new catalytic converter boxes

Low exhaust emissions, compliance with country-specific standards and a characteristic engine sound – the requirements for the exhaust system of the new, naturally aspirated AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine were multiple and complex. The 2012 SLK55 AMG complies with the current Euro-5 emission standard, as well as meeting all the requirements of the US market (LEV-III standard, On- Board Diagnosis II).

Air gap-insulated manifolds ensure a rapid catalytic converter response. For efficiency and to save space, this design has a tandem catalytic converter housing on each side of the vehicle: adjacent to the firewall, two thin-walled ceramic substrates are grouped into each housing. This setup makes the previous, additional underbody catalytic converters unnecessary. The two ceramic substrates differ to ensure rapid and efficient emissions control: the front one is coated with palladium, while the rear one has a bimetal coating of palladium and rhodium. One lambda sensor per row of cylinders is located in front of each catalytic converter housing, and there is a lambda diagnostic sensor between each of the two thin-walled substrates.

Highly variable: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

Power is transferred to the rear wheels by means of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission which features three transmission modes: “Controlled Efficiency” (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). The automatic rev-matching function when downshifting as well as the brief, precisely defined interruption of ignition and injection when upshifting under full load shorten shift times and increase emotional appeal. A double turbine torsional damper with centrifugal pendulum adapts to engine speed and helps minimize vibrations in four-cylinder operation as well as enhances comfort.

Perfect combination: highly expressive driving style and comfortable cruising

The AMG sports suspension with Torque Vectoring Brakes and AMG Direct- Steer system provides both impressive lateral dynamics as well as agile handling. Looking for a highly aggressive driving style or comfortable cruising? The new SLK55 AMG is able to offer both. Independent suspension struts with stiffer spring/damper tuning, torque strut bearings on the front axle featuring higher rigidity, stiffer stabilizers at all four corners as well as a more negative camber on the rear axle result in high cornering speeds and low body roll in fast S-shaped bends.

In critical cornering conditions, the Torque Vectoring Brakes produce a defined rotational movement of the vehicle about the vertical axis in fractions of seconds, through selective brake actuation at the rear wheel on the inside of the bend. This results in the SLK55 AMG steering into the turn precisely and under full control, without any compromises where performance is concerned. Complementing this feature is the AMG Direct-Steer system which enhances handling and agility compared with the standard steering, while also reducing the amount of physical effort required when parking. A new power steering pump helps to reduce fuel consumption by using energy only when the driver is actually steering. In addition, the AMG Direct-Steer system has a parameter function adapted to match the AMG sports suspension. This results in optimum response from the central position, outstanding road feel and sharp handling in all driving situations.

The AMG-exclusive 3-stage ESP® gives individual control choices at the touch of a button: the ESP® button in the center console allows the driver to choose between “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF”. The AMG highperformance brake system has internally ventilated and perforated brake discs on all wheels, measuring 14.2 in. x 1.4 in. at the front and 13 in. x .9 in. at the rear. The system is characterized by outstanding responsiveness, short stopping distances and excellent fatigue resistance.

Optional AMG Handling Package for even greater driving dynamics

The optionally available AMG Handling Package enhances the vehicle’s sportiness even further. It comprises an AMG Performance suspension with stiffer tuning, an AMG rear axle differential lock, two-piece brake discs at the front and a three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel finished in premium leather with Alcantara® inserts in the grip areas.

Unmistakable: uniquely styled design and appointments

Classic roadster proportions with typical AMG design characteristics as well as a hint of the SLS AMG -are striking visual highlights of the 2012 SLK55 AMG. The AMG designers have complemented the exciting basic forms of the long hood, the greenhouse positioned well to the rear and crisp rear section with typical AMG styling at the front, sides and rear. The new AMG front apron has large air inlets and AMG-specific LED daytime running lights. Inspired by the SLS AMG super sports car, the wide radiator grill features a large, centrally-positioned Mercedes star. In the case of the SLK55 AMG, the slats in the front apron and the lower cross strut are painted in a high-gloss black finish. Darkened clear-lens headlamps and darkened bicolor tail lamps also come as standard exclusively on the top-of-the-range V8 model. Bi-Xenon headlights with Active Curve Illumination are also available as an optional extra.

The vent grilles with chrome-plated fins in the front fenders are not only reminiscent of the SLS AMG, but also evoke memories of the famous Mercedes- Benz 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s. The “V8 AMG” lettering beneath the grilles highlight the top-of-the-range eight-cylinder model from the rest of the SLK model series. AMG-specific, distinctively styled side sill panels continue the design of the front apron through to the new rear apron. With its own unique shape, black diffuser insert with three fins as well as the two chromeplated twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, it gives a distinctive finishing touch to the vehicle. The spoiler lip on the trunk lid, painted in the vehicle body color, reduces lift at the rear axle and thereby increases driving stability at high speeds.

Inspired by the SLS AMG: high-quality, stylish interior

Functional, stylish, high-quality: the interior design of the SLK55 AMG is also reminiscent of its bigger brother, the SLS AMG Roadster. Associations with the super sports car are evoked courtesy of the four air vents in the style of jet engines, as well as the center console finished in brushed aluminum. Placed in the center of the dashboard is an AMG-specific analog clock featuring an IWC design. The AMG Performance steering wheel, with its flattened top and bottom sections, also boasts metal trim, aluminum shift paddles and grip areas finished in perforated leather. The clearly-arranged AMG instrument cluster is positioned perfectly in the driver’s field of vision and features four circular instruments, distinctive dials and the AMG main menu. The button for the transmission modes C, S and M is also located in the center console.

The AMG sports seats feature optimized lateral support and premium leather upholstery with AMG badges in the backrests and standard AIRSCARF necklevel heating system.

Magical: the panorama roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL

The standard retractable hardtop opens and closes in less than 20 seconds, transforming the open-top Roadster into a closed-top Coupe with rigid roof at the touch of a button. Alternatively, a panorama roof panel in tinted polycarbonate can also be chosen. The third variant is a world premiere – the panorama roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. This glass roof switches to light or dark as required at the press of a button. When activated it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up from the sun’s intense rays. In other words: a comfortable atmosphere at the touch of a button.

The frames of the three roof variants are made of magnesium. This makes each roof around 13 lbs lighter than in the previous model, giving the car a lower center of gravity – which benefits its agility. A comfortable alternative to the standard wind-stop is the new AIRGUIDE pivoting wind-stop. It consists of pivoting transparent plastic wings which are attached to the back of the rollover bars. The advantage: no installation or removal effort required.

Exceptional position: modern assistance systems on board

The 2012 SLK55 AMG sets new standards when it comes to safety: a whole host of the latest assistance systems support the driver and help secure the new AMG Roadster’s exceptional position in its segment. Standard equipment includes new, fiber-reinforced roll-over bar, two-stage driver and front passenger airbags, headbags, thorax airbags, knee airbags, seat belt tensioner with belt force limiters, NECK-PRO crash-active head restraints, three-stage ESP® and also ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection.

DISTRONIC PLUS: this proximity control system automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, braking the SLK55 AMG to a stop if necessary and also accelerating the Roadster again.

The PRE-SAFE® Brake detects the acute danger of a rear-end collision and prepares for autonomous braking. The system is active at speeds of between 19 and 124 mph when moving vehicles are detected in front of the car.

Three generations: the SLK made by AMG

The 2012 SLK55 AMG is already the third generation of the exclusively dynamic Roadster model made by AMG. It all started in 2001 with the SLK32 AMG. Its supercharged AMG V6 engine with a displacement of 3.2 liters produced 349 hp and maximum torque 332 lb-ft – as such, the SLK32 AMG was the most powerful vehicle among the competition.

At the end of 2004 this was followed by the SLK55 AMG. With its AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine, which developed 355 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, it also took the lead in its segment. No other vehicle in this class offers a large-displacement eightcylinder engine – and Mercedes-AMG has remained consistently true to this philosophy with the successor model. The new 2012 SLK55 AMG will celebrate its U.S. market launch in early 2012.

Mercedes-Benz SLK and M-Class Win Golden Steering Wheel

This year's double win for Mercedes-Benz at the "Golden Steering Wheel" awards marks the continuation of a fine tradition

With over a quarter-million voters ranking their favorites in this year’s Europe-wide reader  vote, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Mercedes SLK won their respective category. These two additional wins have made Mercedes-Benz the most successful automotive brand at the “Golden Steering Wheel” awards over any other car brand in history. Mercedes-Benz has won the “Golden Steering Wheel” 21 times including last year’s “Golden Steering Wheel” win for the Mercedes-Benz CLS. On hand to accept the awards were Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and Professor Dr Thomas Weber, Daimler AG Board of Management member responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

More than 260,000 readers of the German publications “Bild am Sonntag”, “Auto Bild” and their European sister publications in 22 countries registered their votes in this year’s “Golden Steering Wheel” awards. The winner of the SUV class was determined in a direct vote, so making the Mercedes-Benz M-Class the winner of the “Golden Steering Wheel” in this group. The SLK won its category after being shortlisted along with four of its competitors. In the unimpeachable judgement of a panel of experts, and after undergoing real-life testing, it too was awarded the “Golden Steering Wheel” in its category.

Readers from across Europe valued not only the M-Class’s characteristic and distinctive design and its variable interior, with that all-important sense of wellbeing, but also the excellent energy efficiency and thus environmental acceptability of this premium SUV. The permanent all-wheel drive system of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class also proved a determining factor thanks to its well-balanced ride comfort along with excellent driving dynamics, both on and off road, along with the car’s outstanding range and high level of safety.

What ultimately swayed the result in favour of the SLK Roadster in the “Golden Steering Wheel” competition was, above all, the way it manages to combine light-footed sportiness with stylish comfort, striking sports car design with absolute everyday practicality, and superb performance with exemplary ecological credentials. With the excellent performance it derives from its economical and yet powerful engines, along with technical innovations such as the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which can be switched from light to dark at the touch of a button, the SLK takes driving pleasure and open air enjoyment to a whole new level.

This year’s double win in the “Golden Steering Wheel” awards marks the continuation of a fine tradition: with a total of 21 victories to date, the brand with the three-pointed star now leads the field of the most successful car brands to win the competition for the “Golden Steering Wheel”, a prize that has been awarded since 1976.

Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI Offers Power and Performance

The Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and most environmentally compatible roadster in its segment

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI marks the continuation of the company’s unique diesel engine heritage, as well as countering the common misconception that diesel engines and sports cars are incompatible. The four-cylinder diesel engine in the SLK Roadster delivers 150 kW (204 hp) from a displacement of just 2.2 litres to give the two-seater its characteristic sporty temperament. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes only 6.7 seconds. Apart from all this, the Mercedes SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and therefore the most environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It is happy with 4.9 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers (63 miles) (NEDC combined consumption). With the diesel engine in the SLK Mercedes-Benz has taken the next step in a successful strategy that began in 1936 with the 260 D model – the world’s very first diesel car. The world’s oldest motor manufacturer has continued to develop these robust and economical engines ever since and, as far back as the mid-1970s, was able to demonstrate their hitherto undiscovered qualities as high-performance units in record-breaking drives with the legendary C111-II D and the C111-III. The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI is the logical successor to these illustrious forbears.

A certain sluggishness has been accepted as an intrinsic characteristic of the diesel engine ever since Mercedes-Benz installed one in the world’s first diesel passenger car in 1936. So wrong. Some 40 years later, engineers working for the Swabian manufacturer began to look more closely at the performance potential of the thrifty compression-ignition engine – and soon discovered what they were looking for. They fitted a turbocharger to the standard 80 hp five-cylinder engine found in the 240 D 3.0 and 300 D models to elicit an impressive 190 hp from the 3-litre diesel.

With this powerful diesel engine under the bonnet of a spectacularly styled gull-wing model, painted in bright orange, Mercedes-Benz was soon geared up for some record-breaking drives. The C 111-II D powered its way to some sensational records at the Nardo circuit in southern Italy in 1976. For a whole hour, for example, it circled the high-speed track at anaverage speed of 253.770 km/h. It went on to collect further records in all categories – over distances of 10 to 10,000 kilometres and over periods of 6 to 24 hours.

No one had previously thought a diesel vehicle capable of such performance.

In April 1978, the even more aerodynamically designed C 111-III consigned these records to the scrapheap of history, with what was by that stage a 230 hp diesel engine with exhaust gas turbocharging and charge air cooling. It set a new record over one hour with an average speed of around 320 km/h, while the average over the other record distances also never fell below 314 km/h. No other diesel vehicle had ever even come close to such speeds. With these impressive records under its belt the C 111-III was able, once and for all, to prove the reliability and efficiency of the turbodiesel engine.

While these record-breaking drives were going on, development of the production version of the turbodiesel continued apace. These efforts led in 1978 to the market launch of the 300 SD, the world’s first diesel car with exhaust gas turbocharger.

In 1997 Mercedes-Benz ushered in a new era in diesel technology with the C 220 CDI. This was the first production passenger car to feature a diesel engine with common-rail direct injection. This new technology gave the car a significantly higher output and extra torque, while also setting new standards in the disciplines of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

That Mercedes-Benz should now for the first time be offering the sporty SLK Roadster with a diesel engine is the logical next stage in these developments. Its four-cylinder diesel engine, with a displacement of 2143 cc, delivers 150 kW (204 hp) with available torque of 500 Newton metres – as much as a petrol-engined model with more than twice this displacement would normally offer. The new SLK 250 CDIfeatures the most powerful diesel powerplant in this class, with a thrust that propels the Roadster to a very sporty level of performance.

Equipped with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (a six-speed manual transmission will follow in the second quarter of next year), the diesel SLK can cover the sprint from zero to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 243 km/h. Moreover, the flexibility of the SLK 250 CDI is nothing short of phenomenal. Thanks to its enormous diesel torque it accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in just 4.3 seconds – easily the best figure in this class, making for safe and effortless overtaking.

Apart from all this, the SLK 250 CDI is the most economical and therefore the most environmentally compatible roadster in its segment. It is happy with 4.9 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined consumption), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 128 g/km. In other words, the diesel SLK combines thoroughbred sports car performance with the fuel economy of a sub-compact. This guarantees effortlessly superior driving pleasure with great fuel efficiency.

The diesel engine achieves its exemplary output, torque, fuel consumption and emissions figures, as well as its highly impressive smoothness for a diesel unit, thanks to a series of innovative technologies. These include fourth-generation common-rail injection with precise injection timing, as well as two-stage turbocharging. Like all SLK models, the SLK 250 CDI is fitted as standard with an ECO start/stop system.

The frugal fuel consumption makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. Using the European motorways, it is quite possible to drive non-stop from the North Sea all the way to a beach on the Mediterranean. Very comfortable sports seats, a comfortable suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this segment also do their bit to create the right conditions.

As it shares the same genes with the other members of the successful SLK family, the SLK 250 CDI combines lightfooted sportiness with stylish comfort, a striking sports car design and absolute suitability for day-to-day use, while also delivering top performance with exemplary ecology. This means that the diesel version, too, provides open-top driving enjoyment at an extraordinarily high level.

Likewise, the SLK 250 CDI too is available with a choice of three versions of the famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. This glass roof can be changed from light to dark at the touch of a button. There are also three suspension variants: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup and a suspension with an electronically controlled, fully automatic damping system.

Externally the new SLK 250 CDI is no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same stunning looks for which all the SLK models are known.

The SLK 250 CDI demonstrates just how much Mercedes-Benz has achieved with the diesel engine. A comparison of the world’s very first diesel saloon, the Mercedes-Benz 260 D of 1936, with the new diesel Roadster, reveals some astounding developments. The 260 D needed 0.3 litres of fuel per kilowatt per 100 kilometres, whereas the SLK 250 CDI requires a mere 0.03 litres – a bare tenth of the amount. We see the same picture in terms of the power-to-swept-volume ratio: the forefather of all diesel cars, the 260 D, generated 17.7 hp from one litre of displacement, while its family’s latest offspring, the SLK 250 CDI, produces 95.1 hp – more than five times the figure. The SLK 250 CDI thus shows that the diesel engine still holds remarkable potential for the future.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG First Photos

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will recieve a 422 HP engine and will be in dealerships as of January 2012

The new Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will receive a 422 HP engine and will be in dealerships as of January 2012. The badging will remain the same showing the roadster as a SLK 55 AMG and is expected to cost 72 590 €.

At the 2011 IAA in Frankfurt, the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG will make its world premiere – but we have the first pictures and data: 8 cylinder, 422 hp – 540 Nm, V-Max is electronically limited at 250 km / h (155 mph) – 5461 cc (M152 naturally aspirated V8) . The SLK AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h (62 mph), in 4.6 seconds.

The special feature of the SLK is the cylinder deactivation: If the full power of the engine isn’t necessary, it is able to shut off 4 cylinders -giving fuel savings over 30 percent. The cylinder deactivation can be switched within 30 milliseconds and provides 230 Nm of torque and has 800-3600 U / min available when the driver activates “C” Controlled Efficiency.

Visually, we see the usual AMG vehicle elements and changed front and rear bumper along with the typical AMG LED daytime running lights. On the exterior, the engine sound still comes from four exhaust pipes at the corner.

Thanks to Markus for the photos!

Brabus Tuning Program for the New Mercedes-Benz SLK

SLK tuning program includes custom wheels up to 20 inches with suspension options, performance tuning and exclusive interior

A sporty designer suit, custom-tailored wheels with diameters of up to 20 inches complete with corresponding suspension options, performance tuning for all engines and exclusive interior design: BRABUS now offers an extensive customization program for the new Mercedes SLK.

Sporty-elegant BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement components give the roadster an even more thrilling appearance. The two BRABUS front spoiler lips that attach on the left and right side of the production apron and the striking bezels for the daytime running lights lend the SLK a more striking nose. But that’s not all: the spoilers also reduce lift on the front axle which particularly benefits directional stability at high speeds.

The BRABUS side sill attachments emphasize the sporty lateral lines of the car and seem to make the rear fenders wider visually. The rear of the car receives some added sporty character with the BRABUS diffuser and the BRABUS rear spoiler on the trunk lid. The diffuser is integrated with utmost precision into the production bumper and features a centrally mounted rear reflector. These aerodynamic-enhancement components also serve more than just a visual function; they reduce lift in the rear as well.

A major contribution to the sporty appearance of the new SLK from Bottrop likewise comes from the BRABUS Monoblock wheels, which are available in various one-piece or multi-piece designs with diameters ranging from 17 to 20 inches.

The attached photos show the roadster equipped with BRABUS Monoblock F wheels painted the new exclusive ‘Liquid Titanium’ color. They are mounted in size 8.5Jx20 in front and in size 9.5Jx20 on the rear axle. BRABUS recommends high-performance tires from Continental, Pirelli or YOKOHAMA in sizes 235/30 ZR 20 on the front axle and 275/25 ZR 20 in back.

BRABUS sport springs were custom-developed to match the conversion to these king-sized tires. They are calibrated to work with the production shocks, and lower the ride height of the two-seater by some 30 millimeters (1.2 inches). BRABUS also offers various versions of its high-performance brake systems for the new SLK.

These measures furthermore make the new SLK perfectly suited for some extra power. In a first step BRABUS offers efficient and reasonably priced BRABUS ECO PowerXtra CGI tuning for the four-cylinder direct-injection engines. The processor-controlled BRABUS ECO PowerXtra CGI auxiliary control modules are custom-tailored to each respective engine variant and can be installed by any authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer in less than an hour thanks to their ‘plug and play’ design. All performance kits are backed by the one-of-a-kind BRABUS Tuning Warranty® of three years, up to 100,000 kilometers / 62,000 miles (updated November 2006). BRABUS recommends Aral high-performance lubricants.

To retain the engine’s longevity and fatigue strength these kits are designed to only activate the performance-enhancing mapping when all parameters such as engine temperature etc. are in the green. This effectively prevents the performance increase from negatively affecting the service life of the engine.

After the installation of the BRABUS ECO PowerXtra B20 CGI performance kit the four-cylinder direct-injection engine of the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY produces an extra 26 hp (25 bhp) / 19 kW of power and an additional 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) of peak torque.

The new SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY can be upgraded at BRABUS in two stages. The BRABUS ECO PowerXtra B25 CGI module bumps power output of the four-cylinder direct-injection engine from standard 204 hp (201 bhp) / 150 kW to 230 hp (226 bhp) / 169 kW at just 5,500 rpm.

Another ten additional horsepower can be realized with the supplementary installation of a larger intercooler and an electronically controlled BRABUS sport wastegate valve that are part of the BRABUS ECO PowerXtra B25S CGI performance kit. 240 hp (236 bhp) / 176 kW of power and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque in overboost mode accelerate the two-seater in 6.2 seconds from rest to 100 km/h on the way to a top speed of 248 km/h (154 mph).

On the road all CGI engines performance-tuned by BRABUS deliver not just excellent driving performance but also optimized pulling power from low engine speeds and favorable fuel economy. Just as important for the BRABUS engine specialists were exemplary low emissions: like the corresponding non-tuned engines all engines with BRABUS ECO PowerXtra CGI performance kit meet strict EURO V emission limits.

The installation of the BRABUS stainless-steel sport exhaust system is advantageous not only for tuned engines. Its four tailpipes featuring the typical BRABUS design not only give the roadster an even more exclusive appearance but also produce an even sportier exhaust note for all engine variants.

Another focus of the BRABUS refinement of the new Mercedes SLK is the interior. BRABUS offers an extensive program for the roadster: it includes attractive accessories such as high-gloss polished stainless-steel scuff plates with BRABUS logo and sporty elements such as aluminum foot pedals and shifter.

Requests for even more individuality can be fulfilled by the BRABUS upholstery shop in the form of exclusive interiors crafted from especially soft and breathable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Tuner by Carlsson

Carlsson drew on its experience in enhancing engine power to present the Carlsson C-Tronic for the current CGI engines

German tuner, Carlsson, released their revised version of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK today.  The tuning program for the SLK include both interior and exterior as well as engine enhancements.  The 2012 Mercedes SLK offers two seats, a long bonnet, short overhangs, an open top and the engine in just the right place. With the new SLK, Mercedes-Benz presents what is probably the finest roadster in its history. Yet Carlsson still managed to find numerous ways to personalise the car and to leave its own unique mark on its dynamism and style.

The aerodynamics system, consisting of a front spoiler and rear apron insert (for cars with the AMG sports package, code 950), underscores the car’s sporty geometry and guarantees an additional downforce at the rear axle (the front spoiler and the rear insert are available for 620 Euro each, excluding VAT). The car’s front is perfected by the new front spoiler lip RS (available for 549 Euro and optional in real carbon) while the grille inserts made from electropolished stainless steel (449 Euro) replace the standard synthetic honeycombs in the front apron. The rear view meanwhile is dominated by the stainless steel sports silencer with two stainless steel pipes left and right in the typical oval Carlsson shape (available for 1298 Euro). The acoustic engineers at Carlsson have developed an amazing sporty sound in a way that optimises flow and really underscores the character of the SLK. The diffuser insert and the well-designed rear spoiler cause the contact pressure at the rear axle to increase even further.

Carlsson has drawn on its years of experience in enhancing engine power to present, for the first time, the Carlsson C-Tronic for the current generation of CGI engines. Thanks to the additional control units, the engine power is boosted by anything between 27 and 40 hp. The new C-Tronic makes use of the unit’s existing reserves and, thanks to the connection to the car’s electronics system, ensures that the relevant safety limits are adhered to and that the engine is not exposed to any excessive wear. Through elaborate endurance testing, Carlsson has developed a new generation of additional control units for the current four-cylinder CGI engines. Durability is guaranteed by the car maker by way of a three-year warranty, valid from the date of installation.

The C-Tronic CB20 enables the SLK 200 CGI to achieve 211 hp (155 kW) while the C-Tronic CB20S allows it to reach 224 hp (165 kW), compared with the standard model’s basic power of 184 hp (135 kW). Meanwhile, the C-Tronic CB25 boosts the power of the SLK 250 CGI from 204 hp (150 kW) to 231 hp (170 kW) while the CB25S enables the engine to achieve 239 hp (165 kW). (The C-Tronic CB20 and CB25 are available for 1190 Euro and the C-Tronic CB20S and CB25S for 1690 Euro.)

The lowering of the car’s centre of gravity by up to 30 millimetres further increases the car’s dynamics without impacting upon comfort levels. Furthermore, the suspension lowering kit (309 Euro), used in conjunction with tyres of up to 20 inches, add the final touches to the car’s upgrade. Complete wheel sets starting at 18 inches are available from 1930 Euro.

The interior of the SLK receives an upgrade from Carlsson’s own upholsterers based at Gut Wiesenhof. These experienced master upholsterers have come up with a combination of colours and materials for the SLK, which can, if the customer requires, be personalised with matching beading and stitching. Carlsson Nappa, Carlsson Nappa Exclusive and Carlsson Nappa Exclusive Heavy Weight are offered as part of a basic package consisting of the upholstering of two seats, the headrests and the insides of the doors and are available from 3900 Euro including fitting. The interior is further refined by the use of pedal pads made of brushed aluminium with Carlsson logos (suitable for both automatic and stick-shift vehicles) as well as the Carlsson gear selector with Alcantara appliqués, individual carbon features or, alternatively, fine wood inlays.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadsters Come to America

The SLK convertible is available in U.S. showrooms this month with a suggested retail price starting at $54,800

Arriving in the U.S. and hitting showrooms this month are the all new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK roadsters. The new-generation 2012 SLK roadsters represent the third generation of the first sports car offering an automatic retractable hardtop. The new SLK boasts a wide SLS AMG-inspired front grille with a long hood as well as relatively wide doors and a short rear section. The SLK convertible is available in U.S. showrooms this month with a suggested retail price starting at $54,800 (excluding D&D).

MAGIC SKY CONTROL

The standard convertible roof panel is made of body-color polycarbonate, and an optional Panorama Roof features a see-through panel. Also optionally available is a MAGIC SKY CONTROL roof, in which the tinting of the panel can be changed by the occupants, using the same electrochromic technology as automatic dimming mirrors. Sandwiched between two layers of glass, a chemical film called a matrix polymer holds oblong nano particles that line up uniformly when electrical current is applied, allowing light to pass through. When the electrical current is turned off (via a button above the rearview mirror), the nano particles disperse randomly, reducing light and tinting the roof panel.

New Direct-Injection Engines

The 2012 SLK line debuts with the SLK350 model, powered by a new 3.5-liter V6 engine that features direct injection and multi-spark ignition. With even more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, the new SLK engine generates 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Early next year the SLK250 will join the line-up featuring a new turbocharged 1.8- liter direct injection four-cylinder engine that produces 201 hp and 229 lb.-ft. of torque.

New Transmission

The 2012 SLK line features a new transmission with a more advanced torque converter lockup clutch that provides even better fuel mileage, more responsive driving, quieter operation and increased durability. The new transmission is also designed to work best with a new type of low-viscosity ATF transmission fluid – colored blue instead of the usual red. Together with new planetary gears, bearings and internal seals, the “FE-ATF” fluid provides less friction and improved fuel mileage.

ATTENTION ASSIST

The SLK comes standard with the innovative “ATTENTION ASSIST” system, which couples a steering movement sensor with intelligent software that can identify the erratic steering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy. When the system senses drowsiness, a warning message appears in the instrument cluster, and the driver is also alerted by a display that says, “Time for a rest!” Sophisticated enough to disregard sporty driving, the system works between 50 and 100 mph. Elegant in its simplicity, ATTENTION ASSIST essentially adds new computer software to existing sensors.

The First Retractable Hardtop in Modern Times

Spearheading a trend that’s still changing the auto industry, the latest SLK is best known for its distinctive retractable hardtop. With the top up, it’s a quiet, weather-tight coupe – push a button, and about 20 seconds later, the car is topless. Thanks to its pivoting rear window, the folded roof of the SLK takes up relatively little trunk space. Like the retractable hardtop of the larger SL model, the rear window of the SLK pivots to match the curvature of the top as it’s being lowered.

AIRSCARF and AIRGUIDE

An optional AIRSCARF system can extend the open-air driving season into the cooler months. Built into the seatbacks of the SLK, the neck-level heating system blows warm air from the driver and passenger-seat head restraints, allowing occupants to cruise comfortably with the retractable hardtop open in cooler weather. AIRSCARF even compensates automatically for changes in vehicle speed.

A standard fabric air deflector mounts to the SLK roll bars, helping to reduce air buffeting. Going a step further, an optional AIRGUIDE wind deflector mounts to the back of the roll bars. Consisting of two Plexiglas panels, the wind deflectors can be adjusted independently by the driver and front passenger.

PIECHA Design Adds Distinction to Mercedes-Benz SLK as the Accurian RS

Piecha gives the new, more defined front of the SLK an Accurian RS front spoiler lip with lateral grids

The new, third generation of the legendary SLK was long expected and is now available at Mercedes-Benz distributors, precisely at the beginning of the summer.

Obviously, it was a question of honour for the PIECHA Design specialists to develop as one of the first ones an entire styling and tuning programme for the new SLK R172. And thus, they present the “Accurian RS”, a sporty, elegant interpretation of the Stuttgart-based roadster. Piecha gives the new, more defined front of the SLK an Accurian RS front spoiler lip with lateral grids. The lip can be combined with a cover, which turns the grid into a three-part piece and further emphasises the LED daytime running lights on the right and left side. For a quieter airflow around the lateral body of the new SLK, PIECHA Design installed a set of Accurian RS side skirt covers. The covers are bonded easily and positively on the original side skirts. Furthermore, the opposed installed grids provide for a more prominent design. For all R172 models, no matter whether with the side skirts, the AMG or also the Accurian RS sills, PIECHA Design offers per side four LED recessed spotlights each.

The rear end has a considerable sportier appearance thanks to the Accurian RS rear diffuser, which is available in a small and large version. The diffusor, which runs up to the subfloor, not only provides for additional output at the rear axle, but also frames the QUADRO 4-tube mufflers in perfection. In both versions, the serial rear apron has to be slightly reworked. Moreover, a diffusor application is available for the AMG styling rear apron. The Accurian RS aerodynamic programme is completed by a classical rear spoiler lip, which has a simple adhesive fixation. Another world premiere are the PIECHA MP1 monobloc high-tech rims, which perfectly match the modern and sporty, elegant design language of the Accurian RS with its newly interpreted turbine design. In the front in 8.5×19 ET25 with 225/35 R19 and in the back in optional 9.5 or 10.5×19 with 255 or 275/30 R19, the MP1 monobloc wheel provides in connection with 25 mm lowering springs for a perfect wedge shape.

Finally, the Mercedes specialists from Rottweiler offer practical comfort top control, which allows for an opening and closing of the top via the serial key up to a speed of 60 km/h.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Receives Environmental Certificate

the new Mercedes-Benz SLK causes 20 percent lower CO2 emissions than its predecessor at the time of discontinuation in 2010

The neutral auditors from TÜV Süd have acknowledged the high level of environmental compatibility of the new SLK. The sporty Roadster has received an Environmental Certificate in accordance with the ISO 14062 standard, based on a lifecycle assessment of the SLK.

“We have been making rapid advances in efficiency, the likes of which have never been seen before in the history of the automobile. And as the inventors of the automobile, we assume particular responsibility for its future,” explains Professor Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer of Daimler AG. “We analyse the environmental compatibility of our models throughout their entire life cycle – from production, through their many years of usage, to end-of-life recycling. This goes far beyond mere compliance with legal requirements.”

The Environmental Certificate, together with explanatory material, has been made available to the public in the “Life Cycle” documentation series, which can be accessed at www.mercedes-benz.com. In addition to the SLK, the A, B, C, E and S-Class models, as well as the GLK and SLK have already received environmental certification from TÜV Süd.

Over its entire life cycle – from production and operation over more than 200,000 kilometres up to recovery – the new Mercedes-Benz SLK causes 20 percent lower CO2 emissions than its predecessor at the time of discontinuation in 2010. The overall energy balance is equally positive: over the entire life cycle, the primary energy savings amount to 18 percent compared with the predecessor, which corresponds to the energy content of 4100 litres of petrol.

This is largely due to significant reductions in consumption. In the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY model, for example, consumption has dropped from the preceding figure of 8.0 to 8.2 l/100 km (at the time of discontinuation in 2010) to 6.1 to 6.5 l/100 km, representing a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 24 percent.

The SLK already meets the mandatory recycling rate of 95 percent by weight that will come into force on 1 January 2015; the future requirements of vehicle recycling were already taken into account at the development stage. Closing material loops plays an important role here. The new Roadster makes use of a total of 68 components with a combined weight of 35.4 kg that are produced from high-quality recycled plastics. The mass of approved recycled components has therefore been increased by 5 percent over the previous model.

Some 24 components in the SLK with a total weight of almost 8.2 kg are made from natural materials – an increase of 67 percent compared with the previous model. In terms of natural fibres, the new SLK primarily makes use of leather, cotton and wool as standard. For the tank vent filter too, the new SLK also makes use of raw materials from nature, olive stones are employed in the production of the activated charcoal filter.

Mercedes-Benz Takes the Stage at Auto Shanghai 2011

Mercedes-Benz debuts the new Concept A-Class on stage at Auto Shanghai 2011 with David Banner, Estelle and Daley

At “Auto Shanghai 2011”, Mercedes-Benz today presented its new star for the growing global premium compact car segment. The “Concept A-CLASS” study, which is one of the highlights of the leading Asian auto show, heralds the imminent arrival of an all-new generation of Mercedes-Benz compact cars. With expressive design and a host of technical innovations, the Concept A-CLASS – slogan: “The pulse of a new generation” – offers a glimpse of the forthcoming A-Class, which is scheduled for launch in Europe next year. As a world first in the compact class, the new models will be equipped with the radar-based Collision Prevention Assist as standard. The system lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. Also making their debut on the Chinese market were three attractive, new Mercedes-Benz models, including the new CLS. Based on yet another new sales record in the first quarter (42,990 vehicles sold, +78%), these newcomers are sure to deliver further momentum this year. Moreover, arriving in Shanghai right on time for the start of the show were the three fuel-cell driven B-Class vehicles that set off on the “Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive” in Stuttgart on 29 January. Together with the battery-electric smart forspeed, which was also presented at the show, they represent the technological lead that the inventor of the automobile has taken in zero-emissions electro-mobility.

In the 125th anniversary year of the automobile, its inventor is clearly younger than ever, as illustrated by the Concept A-CLASS compact car study with which Mercedes-Benz is starting a whole new chapter in this crucial vehicle segment. “The A-Class study presents particularly dynamic proof that we have once again rejuvenated the powerful genes of the Mercedes-Benz brand,” stated Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The identification and anticipation of new trends has always been a key factor for our brand’s success. And one of the most important trends at the moment is the growing demand for premium compact cars. By the end of this decade, this market segment will have grown from its current level of 5.8 million vehicles worldwide to around 7.7 million vehicles.”

World premiere show with modern “good-mood groove”

The artistic setting for the world premiere fits perfectly with the youthfully dynamic character of the Concept A-CLASS. Inspired by Janis Joplin’s world-famous classic “Mercedes-Benz” from 1971 and on the initiative of British music and lifestyle magazine BLAG, three young performers recorded a new homage to the brand with the star and presented it live for the first time as part of the Mercedes-Benz press conference. The new song “Benz” was composed by singer-songwriter Estelle, rapper and producer David Banner and musician Daley. With modern sounds and new lyrics, they formulate the lifestyle of their generation and the fascination of Mercedes-Benz. “Benz” is a lively piece with a good-mood groove, carried by expressive soul voices.

Concept A-Class – the first heartbeat of a new generation

A long bonnet, low silhouette and slender greenhouse – the sporty look of the Mercedes Concept A-CLASS signals concentrated dynamics. However, it is not just visually, but also technologically that the study rings in a new era in the compact class for Mercedes-Benz. The front-wheel drive car is powered by a newly developed four-cylinder petrol engine. Direct injection and turbocharging deliver high performance combined with minimal emissions and fuel consumption. The Concept A-CLASS features the two-litre version of the BlueEFFICIENCY power unit, which generates 155 kW (210 hp) and is mated to the new dual-clutch transmission from Mercedes-Benz.

In a world first for the compact class, the Concept A-CLASS is equipped with a radar-controlled collision warning system with adaptive brake assist (Collision Prevention Assist, CPA), which reduces the risk of a rear-end collision. Dr. Zetsche: “We will offer this system as standard in our new generation of compact cars. Overall, we are bringing four model variants to market. And, because our customers expect cars that demand no compromise, we are building nothing less than the Mercedes of the compact segment, with all the benefits that typically set our vehicles apart – from safety to quality and comfort through to cultivated sporting character and expressive design.”

Intelligent strategy for local zero-emissions electromobility

In parallel with the renewal and rejuvenation of its compact car lineup, the Stuttgart automaker is pushing forward with the development of local zero-emissions electromobility. “As the inventor of the automobile, we know very well that there is only one master key to a successful future – innovation,” said Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Development Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Here in Shanghai, we are demonstrating that our company is younger and, at the same time, more innovative and more “electric” than ever before.”

The proof that local zero-emissions electromobility is already ripe for series production at Mercedes-Benz is clearly presented by the ongoing “Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive” with three fuel-cell driven B-Class F-CELL vehicles. Following the first three stages through Europe, North America and Australia, the World Drive participants have arrived in Shanghai right on time for the start of the auto show. From there, it continues on across the Eurasian landmass to Stuttgart, where the unique world circumnavigation began on 29 January. With the F-CELL World Drive, Mercedes-Benz is seeking to prove the enormous potential of fuel cell technology and, in so doing, also to lobby for the establishment of a hydrogen fuel station network. “Our fuel cell electric cars are ready to go. All that is missing is a hydrogen infrastructure,” said Weber.

In industry circles, fuel cell technology is seen as a particularly promising solution for powering electric cars, because it combines local zero-emission driving with the benefit of long range and short refueling times. “Hydrogen,” said Dr. Weber, “can be generated using renewable energies, and could also be the key to storing electricity from wind and solar energy. We are ready to bring our innovative fuel cell technology also to China.”

Successful work on vehicles with battery-electric drive

In parallel with the fuel cell car, the company is also heavily involved in the field of battery-electric drives. One example is the smart forspeed concept vehicle on show in Shanghai. Its further developed drive technology, packing more punch in acceleration, top speed and battery recharge time (0-80 percent of capacity in 45 minutes), is also the driving force behind the next generation of the smart fortwo electric drive, which will enter high-volume production next year.

In cooperation with Chinese company BYD, Daimler has also developed a new generation of battery-electric cars for the Chinese market. They are scheduled for market launch under a standalone brand name in 2013. Chinese authorities issued the necessary license to the joint venture company “Shenzen BYD Daimler New Technology Co. Ltd.” in February. The design of the new vehicle is already set, with prototype construction and testing starting right now.

Dr. Weber: “Our electrification strategy encompasses all types of vehicles and drives. The unique breadth of our electric car lineup is complemented by intelligent hybrid concepts that we have developed primarily for large vehicles like our E and S-Class.”

Continuing the model offensive on the Chinese market

Mercedes-Benz is still the fastest growing premium brand on the Chinese market. Following the record results achieved in 2010 with a total of 148,400 passenger vehicles (112 percent increase on previous year of 70,100), this trend continued into 2011 in impressive style – in the first quarter of this year, Mercedes-Benz sold 43,991 vehicles on the Chinese mainland, representing an 86 percent increase over the same period last year. “We are assuming that China will be our largest market by 2015. Our target by then is to reach a sales volume of 300,000 vehicles,” said Ulrich Walker, President and CEO of Daimler North East Asia.

A key factor will be the new generation C-Class, which will be built in China alongside the successful long-wheelbase version of the E-Class. Auto Shanghai saw Mercedes-Benz present more newcomers for the Chinese market, in the form of the new CLS and the likewise completely re-developed SLK roadster. Walker: “All three new models are the perfect embodiment of the cultivated sporting character and innovative power of Mercedes-Benz in which the company has been anchored for 125 years. And each one of them will help us to continue the unique success story of Mercedes-Benz in China.”

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Sets Safety Standards for Roadsters

The new SLK also features a unique combination of driver assistance systems which help to avoid accidents

The new SLK Roadster from Mercedes-Benz sets new standards in safety. The safety experts at Mercedes-Benz have long adopted the motto, the best or nothing, coined by Gottlieb Daimler. Mercedes is not content with just hitting safety ratings, they work to attain safety levels that not only meet but far exceed standars set by the world’s legislators. The most important measure of their work is not the laboratory or crash test facility, but actual, real-life accidents. They call the results of their work Real Life Safety, a concept which is based on research into thousands of accidents. Using this irrefutable evidence, the Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed or initiated most of the assistance systems which today effectively support drivers and have been adopted by many of the company’s competitors.

ATTENTION ASSIST and ADAPTIVE BRAKE as standard

The new SLK also features a unique combination of driver assistance systems which help to avoid accidents. These include the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, for example. Thanks to this system, the roadster develops a precise feeling for the level of attentiveness of the driver and can provide an early warning of overtiredness.

Also making up part of the standard equipment specification is the ADAPTIVE BRAKE. It comprises ABS, the acceleration skid control system ASR and also active yaw control (GMR). In addition, it features the following functions:

  • it supports the driver when moving off uphill, by preventing the vehicle from unintentionally rolling back;
  • it also keeps the vehicle stationary without having to keep the brakes applied continuously – for example when waiting at traffic lights
  • as soon as the driver abruptly steps off the accelerator, it brings the brake pads into light contact with the brake discs as a precautionary measure, so that the necessary braking pressure can be attained quicker in the possible event of emergency braking;
  • in wet conditions it applies light brake contact, without the driver even noticing, to dry the brake discs.

The ADAPTIVE BRAKE works in conjunction with the equally adaptive brake light. In emergency braking situations, it warns vehicles behind with flashing brake lights.

Emergency braking on detecting an acute risk of a front-end collision

Available as optional extras are the DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control as well as the PRE-SAFE® Brake, already tried and tested in other Mercedes-Benz models. Both systems work in conjunction and can initiate emergency braking automatically on detecting an acute risk of an accident.

In normal driving conditions, the radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control adjusts the distance to the vehicle in front automatically. If necessary, it can apply the brakes, even bringing the SLK Roadster to a stop, and accelerate it again. This takes some of the strain off the driver, particularly in bumper-to-bumper driving conditions. If the distance starts to narrow too quickly, the system gives the driver visual and audible warnings, thereby prompting the driver to take action, at which point he is also supported by Brake Assist PLUS (BAS PLUS).

If the systems detect the acute danger of a rear-end collision and the driver fails to respond to visual and acoustic warnings, the electronics activate the PRE-SAFE® Brake in preparation for autonomous braking. This happens in two stages:

  • Around 1.6 seconds before the calculated impact point the system decelerates the car with around 40 percent (approx. four m/s²) of the maximum braking power, gives the driver an additional, haptic warning of the impending impact and as a precaution activates the reversible PRE-SAFE® occupant protection system.
  • If the driver still fails to react, the PRE-SAFE® Brake activates the maximum braking power around 0.6 seconds before the now unavoidable collision – this emergency braking can greatly reduce the severity of the impact. The system therefore acts like an “electronic crumple zone”, offering the car occupants even greater protection.

The PRE-SAFE® Brake is active at speeds of between 30 and 200 km/h when moving vehicles are detected in front of the car. The system also reacts if the car approaches a stationary queue of traffic, providing its speed is below 70 km/h.

Safety and comfort

Those wishing to do so can extend the range of assistance systems in the new SLK even further with the addition of features enhancing both safety and comfort:

  • The Intelligent Light System provides five lighting functions (cornering light function, country mode, motorway mode, active light function and enhanced fog lamps), which are activated depending on the driving conditions
  • Speed Limit Assist is able to detect speed limit signs using a camera on the inside of the windscreen, and indicate the detected speed limit in the instrument cluster or central display.
  • The optional PARKTRONIC incl. Parking Guidance supports the driver when parking. Its ultrasonic sensors measure the length of parking spaces as the car drives past; the cockpit display then provides a schematic representation of the recommended parking manoeuvre.

Only available from Mercedes-Benz – the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®

An additional safety highlight available in the new SLK is the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a system developed by Mercedes-Benz which is unique throughout the world. If the system detects an acute risk of an accident, it reflexively activates precautionary protective measures for the vehicle occupants, so that the seat belts and airbags are able to fulfil their protective function to the full during an impact. Mercedes-Benz developed PRE-SAFE® on the basis of research into actual accidents, and is the only manufacturer in the world to offer such a system. This highly effective system, however, has so far not been taken into account when producing ratings.

In the new SLK, additional post-crash measures supplement the PRE-SAFE® system to enable prompt assistance after an accident has occurred: depending on the damage, the interior lighting can be switched on automatically, the side windows can be opened by 50 mm to provide better ventilation in the interior, and in vehicles with the Memory package the steering wheel can be moved upwards.

Taking into account all of the requirements of the rating institutes

In developing the new SLK, the requirements of Euro NCAP as well as all of the global consumer ratings have been taken into account. This has contributed to the development of the bodyshell structure of the vehicle, which follows established concepts and has been optimised in a number of detailed areas. These include, among other things, reinforced members, a new side impact structure and new fibre-reinforced roll-over bar.

In the event of an accident, up-front sensors and lateral satellite and roll-over sensors help the central control unit to predict the nature and severity of the accident. New, additional pressure sensors in the doors as well as acceleration sensors in the front bumper help in detecting an impact with a pedestrian.

New headbag and crash-responsive head restraints

The restraint systems with two-stage driver and front passenger airbags have also been enhanced. A new feature is the headbag, which provides generous lateral protection for the head impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the seat backrest protects the upper body in the event of a side impact. The seat belts, with belt buckle tensioners and speed-sensitive belt force limiters, serve to highlight the high safety standards of Mercedes-Benz.

Another new feature finding its way into the standard equipment of the forthcoming SLK comes in the form of the NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints, developed by Mercedes-Benz. They support the driver’s and front passenger’s head in the event of a rear impact and reduce the risk of whiplash. Also fitted as standard is automatic child seat recognition.

Protection for pedestrians

The new SLK Roadster uses the latest technology in the area of pedestrian protection too. A sensor system is able to register an impact with a pedestrian and can ensure that the bonnet is immediately raised by 85 mm. This creates additional space between the bonnet and the components in the engine compartment. This in turn results in comparatively lower acceleration values for the head of the pedestrian during the impact, thus reducing the overall risk of injury.

As a result, the new SLK provides its occupants not only with a superior level of safety in all areas – something which is unique in this segment – but also enhanced safety for other road users too.

New Generation SLK Roadster Design Journey

The design idiom accentuates the Mercedes SLK's lively, sporty presence, and is also sculptural

The designers have tailor-made an outfit for the new SLK which emphasises its classic roadster proportions and puts them in the spotlight to thrilling effect. Behind the long bonnet is a compact passenger compartment positioned far back, and a short tail end. The SLK will tempt potential customers with the key attributes that characterise all the classic roadsters from Mercedes-Benz, and that have also made many of them automotive icons.

Professor Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The SLK continues the illustrious roadster tradition of Mercedes-Benz, and excitingly takes it into the future. The design idiom accentuates its lively, sporty presence, and is also sculptural. It expresses personality and sensuality. The same applies to the interior. High-grade materials, lovingly crafted details and a very exclusive finish characterise the essentially very sporty atmosphere.”

Striking front end

The first feature to catch the eye is an upright radiator grille that stands proud and confident in the wind, bearing the new face of the Mercedes-Benz brand. It facilitates the long and well-proportioned bonnet and with its rearward light-catching contours it already hints at the roadster’s dynamic qualities. The bonnet ends with two air intake grilles in front of the windscreen, each embellished with three louvres.

The wide radiator grille bears the Mercedes-Benz star in a prominent central position and displays a powerfully contoured fin, chromed at the front. The clearly defined headlamps complete the look for the new SLK’s face, and daytime running lamps with chrome surrounds (round lamps in the base version) in the bumper round off the front end. The “face” of the new SLK is reminiscent of the legendary 190 SL from the 1950s, which is regarded by many as being the original “SLK”. But it was certainly not just the past that the designers were focusing on; with the new SLK’s front end they also intentionally created a close visual link with the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “gull-wing model” and the new CLS.

The amazing and measurable proof of the meticulously detailed work that has been carried out is that in spite of the more striking, steeper front and the larger frontal area, the Cd value has been cut to just 0.30 (preceding model 0.32).

Dramatic lines

The classic, timeless lines of the side aspect with its typical roadster proportions embodies the utmost aesthetic appeal with a visual assurance of sportiness and fun. The vario-roof spans the interior like a drawn bow. When opened it disappears into the boot, creating the typical roadster silhouette. From any angle and in any position it blends harmoniously into the overall design. A fillet conceals the boot joint, so that it does not disturb the side aspect as with similar roof designs. Neither are the lines disturbed by aerials in most equipment variants: in most cases they are integrated into the windscreen, rear window and parcel shelf.

The air outlet grilles with a chromed fin in the front wings are reminiscent of the famous Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s. In the new SLK they form the elegant starting point for a feature line which extends right back to the muscular rear wings, and uses light and shadow to lend style and elegance to the side aspect.

This is emphasised by the stemmed exterior mirrors, which are positioned on the beltline where they allow a better forward view to the side. With their very narrow stems painted in the vehicle colour, these make a sporty and filigree impression. Their sophisticated aerodynamics also help to keep the side windows practically dirt-free, while ensuring a low level of wind noise.

Depending on the engine variant, the wheel arches house 16 or 17-inch light-alloy wheels, or 18-inch wheels with mixed-size tyres in conjunction with the sports suspension.

Muscular rear end

At the rear the eye is drawn to the integrated spoiler lip and wide tail light clusters. The roll-over bars feature double-skinned plastic claddings with a high-quality soft-look surface. As an optional extra these rear claddings can be of anodised aluminium.

For the first time, the tail lights with their pronounced horizontal emphasis are in all-LED technology. Their upper edge extends forward into the sides, harmoniously culminating in the feature line. A twin exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipes rounds off the muscular impression created by the rear view.

High-grade materials and stylish sportiness

The new SLK is 31 millimetres longer and 33 millimetres wider than its predecessor. With the most compact dimensions in its class, the new SLK has an interior whose generous size is nonetheless exemplary. To achieve this, the designers have developed interior appointments which offer the driver and passenger outstanding perceived value, purist precision and a real feel-good ambience. The interior in the base colour black is characterised by sporty refinement, well thought-out ergonomics and high-quality, authentic materials which have been processed with painstaking attention to detail and skilled craftsmanship. Even in the base version, the centre console and other trim parts gleam in brushed aluminium. Wood can be selected as an option in high-gloss dark brown walnut or high-gloss black ash.

Echoing the exterior design, the black dashboard emphasises the horizontal lines and therefore width of the vehicle. On request it is available in a two-tone colour scheme and with a leather lining. Four round, galvanised air vents similar in form to those in the SLS are recessed into the dashboard, underlining the car’s membership of the Mercedes-Benz sports car family and at the same time deliberately creating associations with the dynamism of jet aviation.

Two large dial instruments – a speedometer and a rev counter – flank a display for the information generated by the online computer. The display menus can be conveniently accessed by the driver using the control buttons on the steering wheel, without taking his eyes off the road. The colour display for the communication and entertainment functions is housed in the centre of the dashboard, and can be easily read by both the driver and passenger. A comfortably shaped controller on the centre armrest ensures safe and easy operation.

On the top of the dashboard, also in the centre, sits a fine analogue clock (optional), subtly underlining the roadster’s stylish character.

An easily handled (diameter 375 millimetres) multifunction sports steering wheel with a flattened bottom section and a thick leather rim makes the high quality and sporty character of the new SLK a constant tactile experience. Metal trim on the spokes enhance the impression of both sportiness and refinement. Shift paddles to perform upshifts and downshifts in the automatic transmission are available as an option. The interior can be enhanced even further with a wood/leather steering wheel.

The sweeping lines of the upper dashboard section are continued into the door panels. The door centre panel is colour-coordinated with the interior. The door openers and seat adjustment switches are trimmed in aluminium or wood.

Sporty yet comfortable seats

The sporty, ergonomic seats with adjustable, crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints integrated into the backrests have high side bolsters for optimum lateral support and a high level of comfort on long journeys. Maximum operating convenience and seating comfort is ensured by optional electric seat adjustment with a memory function and 4-way lumbar support.

In the base version the new SLK is equipped with black fabric seats. There is also a choice of:

  • embossed leather in black, sahara beige or crystal grey
  • nappa leather in black, bengal red or moccha/nut brow
  • Exclusive nappa leather – in this case the upper dashboard section and the doors are lined with black nappa leather

All leather and nappa leather seats are upholstered with leather which noticeably reduces heat build-up. The leather has a special coating which reflects the sun’s rays. Comparative measurements have shown that this leather reduces the temperature of the seats by more than ten degrees Celsius – a significant improvement in comfort when the car has been parked in the sun.

As in the previous model, the neck-level heating system AIRSCARF is available as an optional extra for the new SLK. This creates a flow of warm air around the neck and shoulder areas of the occupants from a vent in the front of each head restraint.

Magical lighting

An ambient lighting system available as an option for the first time creates an impressive effect in the interior of the new SLK. It consists of discreet optical fibres and spots in SOLAR RED, which produce an extremely pleasant yet sporty lighting effect in the door panels, around the door pulls and on both sides of the centre console. This mood-enhancing ambient lighting is activated when the doors are opened (“welcome home” effect), and its intensity can be individually varied by a dimmer.

The central lighting unit in the overhead control panel has two interior lights and a centre console spotlight.

Clever stowage compartment concept

For a two-seater roadster, the new SLK has an exemplary variety of stowage facilities in the interests of versatility and day-to-day utility. The basis for this well conceived interior concept is a large glove compartment with a remarkable capacity of 6.4 litres. Useful features such as holders for a pen, credit cards and coins are integrated into the glove compartment lid.

There are three stowage compartments in the centre console – below the air conditioning controls (this can be replaced by an ashtray on request), next to the controller in front of the armrest (roller-top compartment, optionally a drinks holder) and under the armrest with a 12 V socket, USB interface and AUX connection (optionally a media interface for integration of e.g. an iPod and mobile phone connection). A net attached to the tunnel in the passenger footwell can be fitted with a flexible bottle-holder which can securely accommodate even 1.5-litre bottles.

Excellent climate

The new SLK is equipped with air conditioning as standard. The automatic climate control system THERMOTRONIC with separately adjustable interior temperatures for the driver and passenger is available on request.

An example of the detailed refinements: a windscreen demisting sensor in the stem of the rear-view mirror registers the glass temperature and interior humidity level of the new SLK. In dry weather, when no cooling is required but A/C is operating, the control system powers the compressor down but activates it as soon as it registers that the windscreen is misting up. This has two advantages:

  • The A/C function can remain active all the time, but the demand-controlled system saves energy.
  • As the air conditioning only demoisturises and cools as much air as is required to maintain the interior temperature, the air is never too dry and this benefits the physical comfort of the occupants.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Options and Extras

Firmly embedded in the genes of the Mercedes SLK is exhilarating driving pleasure in any weather conditions

Now in its third edition, the all new Mercedes-Benz SLK raises the bar when it comes to driving pleasure. The roadster offers driver’s a quick and responsive engine inside a stylish yet comfortable open-top sports car. Mercedes managed to pack all these attributes into a great looking, environmentally conscious vehicle that is built to be driven on a day to day basis. Thus making it one of the top car designs out this year. The 2012 SLK350 goes on-sale in the U.S. in June 2011.

“The new SLK embodies the role of the trend-setter like no other car,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “I am convinced that with its passionate design, its high-quality interior and its modesty at the filling station, it will also continue to provide an enormous amount of fun on the road in future, consolidating its status as a cult roadster.”

Innovations are part of the successful history of the Mercedes-Benz SLK:

  • In 1996 the first generation caused a sensation with the vario-roof, which transformed the wide-open roadster into a coupé with a fixed roof at the touch of a button in just a few seconds;
  • The second generation placed the warm AIRSCARF around the neck and shoulders of the occupants as needed, ensuring pleasurable open-top motoring even in cooler temperatures;
  • For the very first time, the third generation offers a choice between three variants of the much-imitated vario-roof. One of these is celebrating its world premiere – the transparent panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which can be switched to light or dark. It therefore offers a choice of an open-top feeling even when the roof is closed, or provides shade in strong sunshine and prevents the interior from heating up. Alternatively the vario-roof is available in painted or glass versions.

The highlights of the new Mercedes-Benz SLK also include a striking and masculine sports car design, a sporty and refined interior with authentic, high-grade materials and a choice of three suspension variants – a standard suspension, a sports suspension or a suspension with automatically adjustable damping.

Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Head of Development, Mercedes-Benz Cars: “With the SLK we offer a wide range of technical alternatives to give customers a personal choice. Among them are a number of unique innovations. Moreover, the SLK is a prime example of how impressive performance, stylish driving comfort and high ecological standards can go hand in hand. In the 125-year history of the automobile, we have never experienced such major leaps in efficiency. Lower fuel consumption and even more driving pleasure – a formula we certainly translate into reality in the SLK.”

Outstanding on all fronts

The best or nothing – this motto is at the heart of the Mercedes-Benz philosophy, and also the guiding theme for the new SLK. The original book of specifications already laid down that the design characteristics of the new roadster must not be one-sided, but must ensure top performance in all major disciplines. Mercedes-Benz engineers have rigorously translated this requirement into reality, and given the SLK attributes that guarantee the roadster a peak position in its segment in multiple respects. Among them are extremely compact dimensions combined with an extremely generous interior providing a feel-good atmosphere and numerous practical features. Naturally outstanding performance and sporty, agile handling are also major characteristics of the new SLK. Moreover, the new SLK is the most economical petrol model in its class, with three new, efficient and powerful direct-injection engines plus the ECO start/stop function, and also the safest roadster with its unrivalled range of safety features.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Firmly embedded in the genes of the SLK is exhilarating driving pleasure in any weather conditions, open or closed, for recreation or day-to-day motoring. It combines its decidedly sporty character with outstanding comfort and high-grade appointments. The new SLK also sets new standards among the compact roadsters where fuel economy and environmental compatibility are concerned. A wealth of outstanding attributes and technical innovations will once again make it the benchmark in its class – and undoubtedly also a success for our brand. The SLK is a roadster with a character, and everyone will want it.”

Mercedes-Benz Features Four New Vehicles in Geneva

Mercedes-Benz presents the C-Class Coupe, SLK Roadster, C63 AMG and the SLS AMG E-Cell at 2011 Geneva Motor Show

The new models presented by Mercedes-Benz at the first major European motor show of the automobile’s 125 anniversary year all have one thing in common – their sportiness. The C-Class Coupe, which is celebrating its world premiere, is just as remarkable as the new-generation C-Class sedan and station wagon for its driving fun and outstanding efficiency. In keeping with their sporty character, the new C-Class models were introduced by players from the women’s German national soccer team. A further highlight of this year’s “Geneva Salon” is the third iteration of the SLK, which redefines the roadster experience while consuming up to 25 percent less fuel than its predecessor. Making its debut on the eve of the show was the new top-of-the-range version of Mercedes’ bestselling model range – the C 63 AMG, which generates up to 358 kW (487 hp) and consumes around ten percent less fuel. The inventor of the automobile is also presenting the SLS AMG E-CELL, which makes its European motor show debut in Geneva.

The first “eye-catcher” at today’s Mercedes-Benz press conference was the Mercedes Simplex from 1902. The revolutionary design of the legendary sports car and its direct predecessor, the Mercedes 35 hp from 1901, defined the vehicle architecture that prevails throughout the auto industry to this day – a low center of gravity, long wheelbase and wide track are the basis for comfortable and sporty driving. It is in this tradition that the new Mercedes models make their debut in Geneva. “All our new models embody the cultivated sportiness that is anchored deep in our DNA”, said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Every one of them delivers pure driving fun with exemplary efficiency – and none more so than the latest milestone in the 125-year history of the automobile, the SLS AMG E-CELL with battery-electric drive, which will arrive in our showrooms in 2013.”

The new C-Class Coupe – world premiere for third family member

Elegant design and an expressive character are what distinguish the new C‑Class Coupe, with which Mercedes-Benz is entering another new market segment in this, the 125th year of the company’s history. The youthful and sporty two-door, which celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show and makes its market debut in June, is the first classic coupe in the C-Class lineup. Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Member of Mercedes-Benz Cars Management responsible for Sales and Marketing said, “The new C‑Class Coupe is an individual and distinctive interpretation of our design philosophy.”

The newcomer boasts all of the same progressive technology as its extensively updated siblings. Here, too, the result is very clearly – pure driving fun matched with exemplary efficiency. It goes without saying that the elegant coupe is also equipped with a full range of technical highlights, including a host of assistance systems and new-generation telematics with internet access.

Market launch will see a choice of five modern direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines. The most fuel-efficient coupe version is the C 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with manual six-speed transmission and ECO start/stop function as standard. The NEDC consumption of just 4.4 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers equates to 117 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The top engine version is the V6 gasoline engine in the C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY. It generates 225 kW (306 hp) and 370 Nm, yet consumes an average of only 6.8 liters/ 100 km. “With the expansion of the C-Class lineup, we are also consciously aiming at new customers,” said Dr. Schmidt. “The new model is youthful, stylish and dynamic. With it, we are offering an incredibly sporty entry into the world of Mercedes-Benz coupes.”

The new-generation C-Class – a bestseller in top shape

The new generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been extensively updated with more than 2,000 new parts and an innovative engine range. Following one of the most comprehensive mid-life facelifts in the history of the company, the bestselling vehicle in the current Mercedes-Benz product lineup has all the prerequisites to continue a unique success story – since its introduction three decades ago, sales of the C-Class and segment-founder the Mercedes-Benz 190 have topped 8.5 million units. Following model update, the new-generation sedan and station wagon have an even more dynamic and self-confident look. The interior has been extensively redesigned and is now presented in line with the Mercedes design philosophy of “Aesthetic Precision”. Premium materials and outstanding workmanship offer the perfect representation of the brand’s hallmark cultivated sportiness. A further innovation of the 2011 C-Class is the “COMAND Online” multimedia system with internet access.

Highly efficient direct-injection engines, the ECO start/stop function as standard and the 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic available for all engines make sure that dynamic driving fun comes together with the very best efficiency. It is with this high-tech package that the new-generation C-Class achieves consumption improvements compared with the preceding model of up to 31 percent. The equally outstanding safety also benefits from features such as ten new driver assistance systems carried over from the E and S-Class.

A further strength of the C-Class is its scope and variety. The already distinctive individualization program has been further expanded with a wider range of equipment options. And, with the new C-Class coupe, Mercedes-Benz is adding another member to the successful C-Class family.

The new SLK Roadster – the third chapter of a great success story

With the new SLK, the most successful sports car in its class is now entering its third iteration. The athletic two-seater with classic roadster proportions takes open-air driving fun to an all-new level. It unites light-footed athleticism with stylish comfort, distinctive sports car design with full everyday usability, top performance with exemplary ecology. The SLK also marks the world premiere of the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL that can be switched light or dark at the touch of a button.

“With its countless technical innovations, the new SLK confirms its role as a trendsetter in the compact premium roadster segment that we founded with the first generation,” said Dr. Schmidt. Efficiency and spirit come together in the new four and six-cylinder engines with ECO start/stop function. They guarantee exceptional performance combined with up to 25 percent lower fuel consumption – a function, too, of the optimized 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission, which is now available for all models. A unique range of safety equipment also underscores the leading position taken in its segment by the SLK.

Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive – around the world with hydrogen

The “Mercedes-Benz F-CELL World Drive” that is currently underway with three fuel cell-driven B-Class F-CELL vehicles demonstrates that local zero-emissions electromobility is already ripe for series production at Mercedes-Benz. At the start of the Geneva Motor Show, the latest status was as follows – after around 3,600 kilometers through Europe, the World Drive participants are now on the road in the USA. The second major stage runs from Florida on the Atlantic coast right through the United States to California, before heading north along the Pacific coast all the way to Vancouver in Canada. The tour then takes to the air in Seattle, heading first for Australia then China. With the world tour that began on January 29, Mercedes-Benz is seeking to demonstrate the enormous potential of fuel cell technology and, in particular, to lobby for the establishment of a hydrogen fuel station network. “Our fuel cell electric cars are ready to roll. All that is missing is a hydrogen infrastructure,” said Zetsche.
