Our bad, Daimler’s German Mercedes blog sent us the story today so we were under the impression it was new.

We checked, it actually hit the internet back in January, so we’re only 3 months late. Don’t say we’re not cutting edge : )

I’ll update the story to reflect the appropriate date – thanks for the heads up.

MBUSA and much of Mercedes marketing as a whole is a joke. There’s a reason Audi surpassed Mercedes in global sales.

Let’s see: MBUSA takes the route of advertising safety. Brilliant, it worked out so well for Volvo. Audi, on the other hand, emphasizes its overall engineering, and in the process, takes on Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and Ferrari in a single ad. But there is hope on the horizon: Sex and the City 2. Or not.

MBUSA is under the delusion they can sit back, deliver mediocre, stagnant ads, and ride the coat tails of their past success. MBUSA’s marketing has lost any form of ingenuity and they choose to follow as opposed to lead. As long as they keep doing so, they’re going to continue losing market share.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of Audi, but MBUSA needs to refresh their marketing department and start realizing what elements of the brand to start emphasizing. And it’s not how much Prada you can fit in the trunk.
