Raikkonen And Alonso Battle For F1 Championship
Posted on September 23, 2005 at 10:30 AM CST

Raikkonen Team McLaren Mercedes F1 Pole Position

This Sunday, Kimi Raikkonen will try to keep his championship dreams alive against Fernando Alonso in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

To stay in the fight for the championship, Raikkonen must finish first, and Alonso, on the verge of becoming F1's youngest champion, must finish worse than third.

The odds of that happening are pretty slim. Although Raikkonen has won three of the last four races, Alonso started his outstanding year with six wins out of twelve races. Although he hasn't won a race since the German Grand Prix on July 24th, Alonso has still managed three consecutive second place finishes...

Post Your Mercedes' Playlist, Win Big

Mercedes Mixed Tape ScreenshotIt's a slow day for Mercedes news, so we thought we'd take a moment to plug another one of our staunch supporters.  The cool kids over at Jalopnik are running a little contest of their own.  Not agreeing with Mercedes' choice of songs on the recently mentioned Mixed Tape, Jalopnik has decided to post some playlists of their own, and they want your help.  Pick your 15 favorite songs, tell them what Mercedes model the songs go along with, and if you're lucky, fame, fortune and a million dollars will be your reward.  Not really, but they'll post the best playlists, and, if you're the winner, they'll give you a prize of "indeterminate value."  If you have time, head over and check it out.

Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape Banner

A little while back, we brought you a story about integrating your iPod and Mercedes.  By now, I'm sure all of you have taken our advice and purchased an iPod in your quest to achieve audio utopia.  But now that you have your new iPod, one question still remains - what should you put on it?

While browsing the Mercedes website today, I stumbled upon a section of their site called the Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape. I've never noticed it before, but every 10 weeks Mercedes releases a new mixed tape. Each tape contains 15 different songs from various artists, all available for free download. If you have an iPod (or any other digital music player), swing by and take a look at it.  You can't go wrong with free stuff, and some of the music is pretty good...

2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

If you're a regular reader of our site, you know how much news there's been about the new 2007 S-Class lately.  I have to tell you, when I first saw the new design a few months ago, I was disappointed.  The S-Class, the epitome of automotive craftsmanship, was in danger of losing its place as the undisputed king of heavyweight luxury.  But, as any true gentleman must do, I have to admit that I was wrong.  Mercedes, gradually exposing me to more and more information, has slowly convinced me to like their new flagship model.  I can't say that I love it, at least not yet, but after recovering from my initial shock, I can honestly say I like the new S-Class.

All of this brings me to, a small bit of information I found on the Mercedes-Benz website today.  You've heard me tell you about all the new safety features found in the new S-Class, but now Mercedes has an online interactive tour detailing the new S-Class and how the different safety innovations work...

Mercedes To Produce All E-Class Models In House
Posted on September 21, 2005 at 2:55 M CST

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Of all the current Mercedes models, none has fallen under more scrutiny than the E-Class.  After recalling 1.3 million vehicles, the largest recall in Mercedes' history, the quality of the E-Class and Mercedes in general have both been questioned.

Today, Reuters is reporting that Mercedes will start producing all next-generation E-Class models in-house.  Currently, Magna International produces the four-wheel drive version of the E-Class, with an output of about 20,000 vehicles per year.  The switch, however, will take time - the contract with Magna International doesn't expire until 2010, when the next E-Class is expected to be released...

Original C. Benz Sohne Plant

If you're planning on visiting the Dr. Carl Benz Automotive Museum, you'll soon have to visit a new location.  This month, the museum is moving form its current Ladenburg location to the almost 100 year old halls of C. Benz Söhne.  The halls, which can be considered one of the birthplaces of the Mercedes-Benz brand, were restored with the help of Daimler Chrysler AG, and will house historical exhibits of the founder of the museum, collector Winfried A. Siedel.  Highlights include 40 passenger cars, race cars and trucks, two biographical exhibits relating to Karl Benz, and many other items and exhibits displaying the Benz engineering history.  The move is scheduled to take place this month.

Daimler Chrysler Looking For Hybrid Partners

Myercedes-Benz S350 Hybrid

Just when you thought we couldn't bring you any more hybrid news, guess what we have today?  Yes, more hybrid news.

Daimler Chrysler, apparently trying to dethrone Toyota as king of the hybrid universe, is currently seeking to expand their hybrid production.  Daimler Chrysler is holding talks with other automakers and suppliers to find partners for the production of "mild" hybrids.

If you're unsure what a mild hybrid is, it's a vehicle that incorporates hybrid technology with a gas or diesel engine, such as the two S-Class hybrids unveiled in Frankfurt.  By combining the two forms of power, automakers are able to save fuel and make the engine more efficient, without adding the costs of a full hybrid.  The downside to mild hybrids is that they're still not as fuel efficient as a full hybrid, and they're not able to run on battery power alone...

2007 Mercedes S-Class Review

2007 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Before I start , I have to tell you that I'm a huge fan of The Truth About Cars.  If you've never heard of them, they're an automotive website dedicated to brutally honest, often hillarious car reviews.  To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, check out their review of the Subaru Tribeca, which has to be one of the funniest car reviews I've ever read.

Now that you know who they are, the good folks over at The Truth About Cars were lucky enough to get their hands on a new 2007 Mercedes S-Class.  In their review, the S-Class performed remarkably well, eliciting numerous praises from its reviewer and earning top marks in each of their testing categories.  I could sit here and try to reiterate all the highlights of the review, but I think it's best if you check it out for yourself.   You can read the full review here.

Brabus Wants To Kill You

Brabus CLS Rocket Front View

The International Auto Show introduced a host of new Mercedes models, including the S-Class, two hybrid S-Class concepts, the ML 63 AMG and the Vision R 63 AMG.  But there was another car introduced at the IAA this year that we failed to mention.  It goes by the name of the Brabus Rocket.

The car, quite simply, is an absurd vehicle.  Brabus took a CLS, added a twin-turbo 730 horsepower V12, and made a car so fast it's likely to snap your head right off your body.  How fast is it?  0-60 in less than 4 seconds, and a top speed of 217 mph, electronically limited.  Oh, did I forget to mention that I love absurd vehicles...?

Mercedes Makes Pedestrians Safer
Posted on September 19, 2005 at 9:00 AM CST

We all know the feeling - it's 10:00 at night, you've just finished a month-long project at work that has caused you many sleepless nights.  As you venture home on the dark, winding road that leads to your house, what happens?  The neighborhood idiot that thinks he should go for a jog in the middle of the night wearing nothing but black darts out in front of your car, forcing you to slam on your brakes and, in the process, causing you a mild myocardial infarction.

In an effort to save the life of the village idiot, as well your heart, Mercedes has introduced several new safety features in the new S-Class, several of which we have mentioned before.  Two of the most talked about features are the new Night View Assist and Brake Assist Plus.  To refresh your memory, Night View Assist uses a infrared lighting and a camera to illuminate the road, and then beams the infrared view to a screen located behind your steering wheel.  Brake Assist Plus uses radar to scan the road ahead and calculate the necessary brake force needed in the event of an emergency.  If, for some reason you are forced to brake suddenly but don't apply enough pressure, the Brake Assist Plus then kicks in and applies added pressure as needed to safely stop the vehicle...

FAO Schwarz Ride Who doesn't love Christmas?  Getting together with your family, drinking eggnog, singing carols, and of course, getting presents.

As parents, it's often difficult to find the perfect gift for your child, especially when your child already seems to have everything.  We sympathize with you, and in an effort to make your life a little easier, would like to offer a suggestion.  Why not get your little angel the convertible roadster from FAO Schwarz?

This lovely SL-inspired roadster looks and drives like a real car. Features include a three-speed transmission, rack-and-pinion steering, four wheel disc brakes, turn signals and headlights. And to teach your kids about the joys of rising gas prices, the little roadster even runs on real unleaded fuel. Just imagine the look on the other kid's faces when your child pulls up to the playground in his shiny new Mercedes-inspired roadster...

Is Mercedes Designing A New Coupe?

Mercedes-Benz SLK Grille

I was a little bored this afternoon, so what did I do? I sat back, ordered a pizza, and browsed the Bangkok Post. What's more fun that reading the Bangkok Post, right?

So anyways, while I was catching up on local Thai news, I stumbled upon an interesting tidbit of information. Rumor has it Mercedes may be developing a model to compete with Porsche's Cayman and BMW's Z4 Coupe. The new model, dubbed the SLT, is said to be based on the current SLK model.  The SLT will sport the same McLaren-inspired front end as its topless brother; however, its back will be modified and feature a more upright rear windshield than its Porsche and BMW competitors...

Launch Of Mercedes E 420 CDI And R-Class
Posted on September 15, 2005 at 4:20 PM CST

Mercedes-Benz E 420 CDI Front View

I'm not sure how this press release slipped through the cracks, but not to worry, we've found it and are bringing it to you now.  Better late than never, that's what I always say.

For our international readers, the new Mercedes-Benz E 420 CDI and R-Class officially go on sale today. Unless you've been living in a cave for the last couple months, you already know about the R-Class. If you need a refresher course, you can check out information about the new R-Class here.

The Mercedes-Benz E 420 CDI on the other hand is a car we haven't mentioned that much of.  The newest addition to the E-Class line features a 314 hosepower V8 diesel engine, making it the most powerful diesel passenger car in its class.  It features Mercedes' new 7G-Tronic seven speed automatic transmission, new Airmatic air suspension, boasts a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited 155 mph.  Not bad for a diesel...
