Exterior view of a custom Mercedes-Benz wagon custom conversion

Occasionally when writing, words escape me.  It's as if there no possible way to describe exactly what is laying before my eyes.  Such is the case with this vehicle, a vehicle that could only have been found by the gentlemen of Jalopnik, and a vehicle that, if the price is right, could be yours.

What it is... why it exists... why you should want it... let's listen as the vehicle's owner tries to answer these and any other questions undoubtedly swirling through your head...

Before I begin this morning, let me preface this story by saying I could care less what Consumer Reports has to say about anything - vacuums, microwaves, washers, refrigerators, cars, it doesn't matter - the publication never has and never will have even the slightest impact on anything I purchase.

It is utterly useless to me.

That being said, Consumer Reports recently looked at a number of luxury sport utility vehicles, some of which included the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes R-Class and Mercedes GL-Class, in an effort to determine which model best meets their "rigorous" testing criteria...

Posted October 12th, 2006 At 3:20 PM CST

DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche being interviewed during a press conference

In an article published by AutoWeek yesterday, DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche took a moment to share his thoughts on the Mercedes Car Group, again reiterating that he expects a 7 percent return on sales at the Mercedes-Benz division by the end of next year.

The expected increase is due in large part to two major factors - decreased costs and increased productivity - about which Zetsche had this to say: "We had to change the basic approach. We are challenging the quality strategy more.  I am very confident that we have a much more resilient base for profitability..."

Sure, we've all read the reviews; we've all been bombarded by Mercedes' marketing campaign telling us it isn't a minivan, it's a "sports tourer".    But what we haven't read, and what may be the biggest factor as to whether or not the R-Class is really worth the price of admission, is how it holds up over the long-term.

Despite Channel 4's best attempts, the answer to that question still remains.

Although it's true the British website did conduct what they're calling a long-term test of the Mercedes R320 CDI, it ends up being nothing more than what you'd expect from the typical review - a general overview, brief looks at a few of the R's different features... standard review stuff...
