As if we hadn't had our fill of Mercedes CL63 AMG reviews over the past two weeks, Fifth Gear recently took a moment to deliver what turns out to be a futile attempt at analyzing the new model, ultimately stating nothing more than their own assesments as to the current state of AMG.
Sure, there's the obligatory "It's fast", "It's nice", "It's refined" that we've come to expect from CL63 reviews, but then there's the "Is it really better than the CL500", "Why does Mercedes make so many AMG's", etc. that I quite frankly could care less about.
Their conclusion?
| "Mercedes is in grave danger of turning AMG into nothing more than a trim level - the sort of premium-brand equivalent to 'Ghia X'. The CL63 AMG is in many respects an awesome car, but as it's not noticeably more sporty than the CL500 and not as ostentatiously pointless as the CL600, we're having difficulty seeing just what its adding to Mercedes teeteringly top-heavy model portfolio." |
I see.
So creating a 525 horsepower luxury coupe that weighs two-and-a-half tons and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds now equates to nothing more than a trim level?
Yeah, I didn't think so.
